Ella Grace Schmidt

1/10/2023

Picture

Ella Grace Schmidt – Tennessee
Nomination by Denise Schmidt
Photography by Photography by Michelle
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ella Grace has inspired so many lives. She is a leader on her cross-country team that’s she’s been on since 6th grade. She strives for perfection and works hard on everything she is given. She inspires her friends and family members to never give up on their dreams! She is one special senior and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in college!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I try my best to inspire people to work their hardest for what they want. I believe that if you try your best you can reach your dreams. I also try to inspire people to be kind to other people because you never know when someone is having a bad day! It’s inspiring to be positive rather than negative!

What else would you like to talk about?
In November of 2022, I found out I have a micro tumor in my pituitary gland. I’ve had to overcome many obstacles to feel “normal” again. Overall, I never want anything to come in my way of my dreams for my future so this tumor will never stop me. I will keep pushing through no matter what happens and I’m so thankful to my family for always being here for me through this process.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
If I had to present a topic to my peers, it would be about kindness. The fact that there is not a lot of kindness in this world. If the world was more kind to people, I feel that many cases of depression would be lowered. In addition, the hate on social media makes everyone overthink or be self-conscious about what they post but if everyone was kind, people would feel confident in their own bodies!

Daphne Laudenslager

Picture

Daphne Laudenslager – Pennsylvania
Nomination & Photography by MadisonBaumanPhotography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Daphne Laudenslager is inspiring to me because she accepts people as who they are and notices the good in everyone. Daphne doesn't have a mean bone in her body and will do anything/drop everything to help anyone. She is the friend you want by your side for the rest of your life. She gets along with everyone and has strong communication skills. She's shy but determined. She knows how to get the job done and done well. No matter what she is going through, you'll never see her drop her smile. She shares her positivity with her bright smile to people who are feeling lonely and need a shoulder to cry to. She inspires me to be nicer and more understanding to others because we don't know what people are going through and she taught me a big life lesson. To always care for everyone even if you don't know them because everyone is human, and life is vulnerable. She is my best friend and she pushes me every day to be a better person.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I will always push to do the right thing, and I tend to put others before myself because everyone deserves more than life gives them. I know that every person in the world goes through some kind of trauma, and it impacts their life a great deal, so I tend to always treat people with kindness. I see the good in people even if they do something that is not particularly good. There is not enough good in the world, so I want to bring out the kind of change in people that could be beautiful.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk more about modeling because I am very passionate about it, and my best friend is a photographer! I would also like to talk more about singing, dancing, writing, and acting!!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers, I would most likely talk about fashion and social media! Whenever I see clothes or purses or anything in general, I have a sense about what clothes go best with each individual . With social media, you can do anything and be anything that you want, and a lot of people express themselves beautifully and I love it.

Ava DiCosola

Picture

Ava DiCosola – Illinois
Nomination & Photography by Carol Graham Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ava is a 14 year old dancer at Inspire School of Dance in Naperville, IL. She has had a passion for dance since the age of 3. In addition to being a full-time company member, she is on the Varsity Dance team during the fall season at Oswego East High School.  Ava is involved in her church, with volunteer work including Mission Trips to assist families in need. She has also enjoyed assisting with younger dancers at her studio. Family and friends would describe her as kind, loyal, funny and driven. Her goal is to pursue her dream to dance in college with an additional focus on photography.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
y nomination pretty much sums up what I think is the most important things about me. However, I could also focus on how much I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and making sure they feel special. I would say that while I work hard in general, I also love my downtime...especially my sleep!

What else would you most like to talk about?
I could do an entire interview about dance, and how much it affects aspects of my life. However, I could also enjoy speaking about clothes, food, and sleep.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Obviously I could talk forever about dance and how much I love it. I also enjoy talking about clothes, specifically about dance attire, but also fashion in general. I am learning about photography and hope to be able to speak more on that in the future.

Amiah Murry

Picture

Amiah Murry - Alabama
Nomination by Chris Murry
Photography by Nirvana Gardens
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: The nomination Amiah Murry is inspiring to young Black women. She has strong features and is tall. In her Senior portraits, she shows off her feet and she takes pictures different from what’s expected of Senior portraits. She inspires her community and others around her through her gowns and pictures which emphasizes Black beauty.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?)
I am a product of a single mother family with various struggles. Yet, I have managed to be top in my class, obtain many academic roles and awards, all while being an athlete. There is hope for everyone, regardless of where you are at life. Losing both of my grandmothers within less than 4 months between each other hit me hard. Grief is hard, but you have to keep going. God has a plan for everyone, and you can’t reach it without trying or failing.

What else would you like to talk about?
Life has a funny way of bringing about opportunities. I met the photographer of my Senior portraits eating out at Prom. She followed me to the bathroom, complimented my dress and offered to take my Senior portraits. Now, I have beautiful pictures all because of perfect timing. Everything will fall into place, regardless of your situation keep praying and pushing on.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I could talk about God and planning for the future. I chose this topic because everyone constantly rushes the future without consulting God. The anxiety and stress of life cannot be coaxed without God. Just praying and relying on him to pave your path is the best way to go about your future and stresses.

Nomination: Alyssa is such a talented ballet dancer! She started dancing at age 3! She excels at school while practicing ballet 3x a week after school. She recently performed beautifully in the Nutcracker as Snowflake, Bavarian Marzipan, and Flower. In her free tine she loves to read and listen to 70s and 80s music. She also loves community service. She has a huge heart and it’s such a pleasure to know her!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I dance with Elevate Dance Center in Vacaville. Most of my dance training has been in ballet and en pointe, but for the past two years I have been training in hiphop, lyrical, and jazz. At Elevate, I am also a teachers assistant for a ballet and hiphop class.

Natalie Broyles – West Virginia
Nomination & Photography by M.C.C. Photos
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Natalie is an incredibly talented dancer and a very hard worker. She has been dancing since she was 3 years old. Now at 15 years old, she travels to other states to learn and perform! To fund her travels, she bakes cookies and other sweets and sells them at vendor events like craft fairs. She was invited to study with Joffrey Ballet Pre-Professional program in New York City this year.

Tell us about your dance career.

I started taking dance at the age of 3 from a local high school student who taught classes. A year later I switched to Princeton Dance Studio, where I continue to study today. It is 45 minutes away from my house, but the drive is totally worth it to do what I love. I was invited to join the dance company, PPAC in sixth grade. I take as many classes as I can because I love it.

What do you love most about dance?
I love everything about dance. I feel like it’s very graceful and the wonderful feeling I get while dancing is indescribable. It lights me up inside and it is my passion.

Tell us about your favorite place to travel to perform so far.
My favorite place to perform so far was at UNCSA. It was an amazing experience, and I would do it again because the people and the location made it so memorable. Another performance I really enjoyed was in 2020 when I performed in the Joffrey Ballet School (NYC) online showcase at the same time I performed in my home studio’s performance. JBS was pre-recorded and aired while I danced on stage in WV.

Where was your favorite place to learn when you traveled?
My favorite summer intensive was Joffrey Ballet Schools Pre-Professional Summer Intensive in NYC. I really enjoyed learning from all of the teachers while I was there, and I was able to experience more than I can in my small hometown. I made friends from all over the world that I will remember for life.

What types of dances do you study, and which is your favorite?
I study ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, as well as hip hop. My favorite area is ballet because I feel very joyful but at summer intensives. I have also learned to love contemporary ballet because I can feel free to express myself. At summer intensives I have also studied flamenco, Horton, and other styles.

Picture

When will you go to NYC to study and what are you most looking forward to experiencing there?
I plan to go to NYC again this year for Joffrey’s Jazz and Contemporary Summer Intensive. I am looking forward to experiencing training from various teachers and the connections I will make there. I also plan to attend Joffrey’s year-round program when I save enough money to afford the expenses.

What is something that non dancers may not realize about dancers/dancing?
I feel like non dancers don’t realize the time and practice it takes to become a dancer. I spend most of my time dancing and if I’m not dancing then I’m at school. I head to school at 7:30 am, then go to dance in the evenings until after 9:00 pm. My 45-minute drive home leads me to get home after 10:00 most nights. When we have breaks for holidays, I have to make sure I still stretch and train so that I don’t lose any of my technique. I also spend my whole summer dancing as well. Dance does not have a season; it is year-round.

What is the hardest part of being a dancer? What is the best?
The hardest part of being a dancer is the time it takes. I often pass on invitations from friends and family because I have dance. Sometimes I miss the activities, but dance is my passion. The best part of being a dancer is the joy I feel while dancing. It makes up for everything else I sacrifice for dance.

How did you find and why did you choose M.C.C. Photos for your photographer?
He is a local photographer and he wanted to try some dance shots. I was selected to work with him on the shots.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
The experience was wonderful. He was very patient and allowed me to change costumes several times. He was open to poses I wanted to try and to incorporating the studio mirrors in the shots, which created more work for him during editing.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I live with 7 brothers and my parents are a teacher and a farmer. Since my parents cannot pay for all of my intensives, I work during the year by doing bake sales, babysitting, and other jobs to raise the money to attend. The rural area I live in, makes it more difficult to receive the training I need for my career. Thankfully my studio is only 45 minutes away and they are amazing.

What do you love doing with your brothers?
I love going on vacations with my brothers. There is always something to do when they’re there. It is never boring.

What is the hardest part of living with 7 brothers? What is the best part?
The hardest part of living with 7 brothers is that they like to pick on me a lot and tease me. The best part is that I always have someone to talk to.

What is a family memory you'll never forget?
The family memory I’ll never forget is probably our trips to Carowinds. Some years we received season passes as Christmas presents and we were able to go several times.

What else would you like to talk about?
I’ve dreamed of being a professional dancer most of my life and I make sacrifices to do that. I miss events with friends and family so I can train or work to pay for training. I know the meaning of hard work and sacrifice to chase your dreams.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Taking opportunities to travel while you are young is important. I am from a very small rural area of 13,000 in our county and I have been able to experience travel through opportunities in dance. I have more life experience than many adults because I’ve navigated in NYC, rode a subway, explored other food and cultures, and met people from all over the world. Don’t think that living in a small town limits your opportunities.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was probably getting into the Joffrey Ballet School Year Round Program. It took years of hard work and dedication to develop the skills I need to be accepted into that elite program.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give to someone who wants to be where I am today is to never give up. Stay focused, keep working, and great things will happen.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself as a professional dancer in 5 years. I plan to join a ballet or contemporary dance company in NYC.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity besides dance is baking cookies. Every cookie I bake allows me to raise money to chase my dreams.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I am very good at managing children from being the second-oldest of eight and from assisting younger classes at my studio.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are to make it into a professional ballet company, become a choreographer, and to travel.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Misty Copeland inspiring, the first African American Female Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. She started late, had the wrong body type, and proved everyone wrong.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I work hard to chase my dreams. I spend most of my time training, raising money, or attending school instead of hanging out with friends.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I have been to several summer intensives including Charlotte Ballet Summer Intensive, Joffrey Ballet Summer Intensive, Joffrey Ballet Pre-Professional Summer Intensive, and UNCSA Summer Intensive for 4 weeks in 2022. I also maintain straight A’s in school.

Eliy Simmer

Picture

Eliy Simmer – Michigan
Nomination by Joy Simmer
Photography by Capture by Cassie Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination:
Eliy Simmer was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma of the scapula in May 2021 and underwent 14 cycles of chemotherapy and 31 days of proton radiation therapy. Before her diagnosis and treatment, she was a community volunteer, volleyball player and dancer, but now she is an advocate for pediatric cancer warriors and their families.

Now 16 and a survivor, she is helping other teens going through treatment. She has been collecting donations and items and putting together “Eliy’s Sunflowers” teen kits for teens who are going through cancer treatment and collecting donations and supplies for other pediatric cancer families.

Picture

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about pediatric cancer awareness and helping others. Even before my battle with pediatric cancer, I have always enjoyed volunteering my time and being involved in my community. Even during the stressful times, I always try to keep a positive outlook and cheer others up.

What do you want people to know about when you had cancer?
I learned that the friends that are there for you in the beginning may not be the ones there for you at the end. This may hurt along the way, but you realize the people who stuck with you throughout your journey are your true friends and that is what truly matters.

What do you wish people knew about having cancer/being treated for cancer?
A lot of people think that just because treatments are over, that you are done completely. That is not the case… For many of us pediatric cancer warriors, it is a long battle even afterwards. This all depends upon the type of cancer you have/had, you are not considered in remission until you have had clear scans for 5 years. It is a huge adjustment going to your “new normal.” You have to reacclimate with your peers, you have to face anxiety every 3 months when you have rescans. It is even difficult when you have to face the people who you thought would step up when you were faced with one of the most difficult things you have to face in your life and they turned away from you when you needed them the most.

Childhood cancer is not rare, it is common. Not many people realize that. Nobody knows what you are going through and what to expect while going through this type of a journey. But no matter what challenge you face, you can and you will overcome it because you are not alone and it is okay not to be okay.

Picture
Photography by Capture by Cassie Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Capture by Cassie Photography for your photographer?

Cassie actually had reached out to my mom while I was going through treatment because she knew how much I loved sunflowers and she wanted to have a session with me. We went to the local pumpkin patch, The Wild Pumpkin during one of their sunflower days.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Cassie is a local photographer and had spoken with my mom about doing a shoot with me. Just a couple months before my diagnosis we had a photo session with her. Cassie had been messaging back and forth with my mom and she wanted me to have a fun session and feel pampered. By this point, I had already lost my hair I was starting to lose some of the hair of my eyelashes and eyebrows. I was very unsure about how I looked being bald. She asked a local makeup artist to come out and do my makeup.

During and after the session I felt amazing, I felt empowered. That’s when I knew I could definitely rock a bald head and I did!!! One of my favorite things I loved about the session was that it was taken in a field of sunflowers. Sunflowers are not only my favorite flower but they are the sarcoma awareness symbol!!!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I like to think of myself as a worker and an entrepreneur. When I was 10 years old I started doing arts and crafts to raise money. I didn’t really have a specific purpose, I just wanted to make things, make money, and then put it away. I would work on my arts and crafts projects when I was not in school or at dance and I would raise money for different dance trips that I wanted to go on. I attended as many craft shows as I could to save money up. When I started playing volleyball, I was able to use some of the money that I saved to help pay for special training sessions. When I turned 14, I had enough money saved up to buy my own car and I did! I was able to do my drivers training in my own vehicle and I take a lot of pride in it. I feel like you appreciate things a lot more when you work for them!

What kind of art do you like to create?
I love to draw and love shading with charcoal and pencil. My artwork was like therapy to me while going through chemotherapy. My nurses admired that I could draw things so fast and workers on the floor would stop by to see me and to see what new art pieces I created. I always had a sketch book with me.
I like clay molding too!
Picture
This is a picture of a picture I drew while waiting for news on my test results (pre-diagnosis) - Eliy Simmer

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to volunteer in my spare time. I was taught that you should be a part of your community and I am. I like to volunteer for programs and events and to be around people, socialize, and be a part of things!!! I also love to volunteer to help animals. Growing up, my mom would help injured and orphaned animals and I would help her take care of them. This is something that was put on hold during my treatment, but I hope that we can do it again now that I have completed treatment and am doing well.

What type of work would you like to be doing with animals now that you are doing well?
We recently got a new addition to the household, a rescue dog. His name is Finn, and I am hoping to train with him and be able to do agility with him. I know now that things have calmed down, my mom will start bringing home more animals to help. :P

What else would you like to talk about?
My hobbies are photography, art, dance, and music. Before my diagnosis, I was passionate about volleyball and dance, but with how fragile my arm is now post treatment, I just focus on other activities that give me joy. I had a lot of time to think about what I value in life and what things I want to do, and I love going to concerts and traveling, so when I finished treatment, I set goals for myself. I was going to experience as many things as I could!!!

Tell us about your photography. What do you like taking pictures of? We would love to see a favorite picture you took!
I really enjoy taking nature photos or trying to recreate some photo ideas that I saw online.

Picture
Image taken by Eliy Simmer -Photo I took in my garden
Tell us about your dance career.
I was in dance for 11 years. I started out with ballet and tap, but eventually stuck with tap and musical theater. I was a part of Aspire which was a dance performance group and we also went to competitions. Going and dancing at Disney was a highlight for me.

What is your favorite thing about being a dancer?
With dance I felt like you are able to let out your emotions through movement and I felt like I was a part of the music.

What do you love most about music? Do you play an instrument? Sing?
I feel like I really connect with music. There is a saying, “ I don’t feel the music, the music feels me.”
I play guitar and the ukulele. I am just starting to learn how to play the banjo. I love to sing, but I only sing for myself.

Where has been your favorite place to travel and why?
I think out of all the places that I have traveled; California is my favorite place! Last May, Concerts 4 Cancer and Campaign One at a Time helped me get out to California because I missed seeing my favorite band (Weezer) play while I was in treatment. I also was able to see some of my other favorites while out there and go to the Friends set at Warner Bros.

Where would you most like to go next? Why?
Greece!!! I had saved my money by babysitting, working at the local pizza place, and doing special craft orders to fund a school trip I was supposed to be going on to Greece. I couldn’t go because of my health issues and was bummed out that I had to miss it. I am hoping to go someday!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
The topic that I would discuss and that I feel passionate about, is advocating for pediatric cancer support and research. Only 4% of the federal cancer research budget is allocated to pediatric cancer. The protocols for pediatric cancer have not changed much over the last forty years and this is in part due to the lack of funding available for research. #morethan4 is something that I am very passionate about, and I want to help make a change. By spreading awareness of pediatric cancer, I can hopefully help in the initiative to increase funding for research and patient support.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

Staying positive through treatment, even during the hard days. Focusing on my art and music helped and having a great support system helped. People who thought would be by your side that may not have been, but there were so many people who came out and were supportive that I didn’t expect.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
One thing that you need to do is take time for yourself and time to heal. Your body needs time to reset.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I would love to be doing something that helps other warriors, whether it is with art or in the medical field, I am not sure…

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Watching Friends on repeat! Lol
Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can pop my own ears.

3 Things on your bucket list
- Travel to (Greece, Ireland, Bora Bora)
- Meet my celebrity crushes (Noah Schnaap and Christopher Briney)
- Meeting Weezer

Who do you find inspiring?
Jane Marczewski (AKA Nightbirde). She sang “It’s OK” on America’s Got Talent and she had been battling cancer for a long time. She stayed positive through her journey and was such a bright light and talent.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I have a lot of people who tell me that my smile is inspiring.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
July is sarcoma awareness month and my birthday month. My zodiac sign is Cancer. My favorite flower is a sunflower, which is the sarcoma awareness symbol. Ewing Sarcoma Awareness Day is 11/22 and those are also my volleyball numbers.

Tell us about your dance career.
I have been dancing my entire life. My mom put me into dance classes at just 2 years old because I would go to the dance studio with my older cousin and be sad when she got to go to dance class and I didn't. Since then I haven't stopped, when I got a little older I joined the competitive team at my dance studio. With it being my senior year, this is my last year getting to be on the competitive team but I intend to keep dancing in college and further my love for it.

What types of dances do you study and which is your favorite? Why?
I study all types of dance, I am very fortunate to have grown up at a dance studio that is centered around their dancers being well rounded in all styles of dance. But my favorite style of dance is contemporary. Contemporary is a very dramatic form of dance that I love doing because it lets me release all my emotions and frustrations through it.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
My favorite accomplishment from dance is being on LA dance magic Pro-Track for the 22-23 season. Getting picked with 9 other people from the 50 that auditioned to travel around the United States and dance with people from so many different states is truly a blessing.

What is a favorite memory from dance?
My favorite memory from dance is all the friendships I have made within it. All my dance friends are my closest friends and mean the world to me.

What does being in Legacy League entail?

Legacy is an organization that focuses solely on doing good for the community through volunteering. We get to work closely with so many lovely local organizations and make a difference in a big way.

What has been your favorite community service project and why?
My favorite community service project has been working closely with a local neighborhood during their holiday events. Whether it's a trunk or treat or meet and greet with the easter bunny, it always warms my heart to see families all gather as a community.

What have you loved most about your senior year so far?
I have loved connecting with my old and new friends at school events like football games and theater performances. I believe that it is so important to support your friends and doing that this year has brought me so much joy.

What are you most looking forward to before the year is over?
I am looking forward to reaching out and making new connections with new people that will be going to the same college as me

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Read Photography for your photographer?
I had a few friends that were apart of Angie’s Power Team in years before me and they spoke very highly of the group. When I met with Angie for the first time, she was super loving and comforting. One thing that I loved about her was that she wants more than anything for you to be comfortable in your own skin.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Angie’s Power Team has been a wonderful experience and I am so grateful that I am a part of it this year. What I love most is the group of girls I am on the team with. They are all so amazing and bright, I love that we have all grown close and bonded with each other so quickly. They are all truly inspiring and make me want to be the best version of myself.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to work with children. I am seeking a degree in Human Development and Family Sciences, so that I can pursue working with children in many capacities in my future. I teach dance to children as well. The arts are a huge part of my life that I would like to share with the youth of tomorrow.

What do you enjoy doing most with children?
I enjoy doing art with the kids the most. Watching each kid get to turn on their creative brains while also still improving their basic skill is such a win-win situation.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have a huge love for animals. I would love to foster needy animals when I am a settled adult, so that they are able to find great homes. Animals are helpful to people and their well being by bringing joy, comfort and stability to their daily lives.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
My true passion is dance and the arts. I have grown up around dance all my life. I think I could dance before I could walk. Through my training in dance, I have realized how many life lessons it has taught me. Dance requires huge discipline, dedication, passion, and commitment to reach your goals. I learned that the amount of work you personally put into things, determines how successful you will be at the task at hand. These attributes will help me to be a creative and upstanding person in today's society.

Maya Martin-Cubbage – Maryland
Nomination & Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Maya Martin-Cubbage is one inspiring teen! Whether Maya is conducting community service projects as a Fierce Dance Team- Dance Hope Cure Ambassador to raise awareness for childhood cancer or raise funds for a local nonprofit; sharing her passion and love for dance by spending her Saturday mornings teaching dance to preschoolers; proudly representing her school or the Latino Student Fund - where she is a scholar - as an ambassador as well; increasing awareness and sensitivity for adoptees using her personal experience and voice as an international adoptee from Guatemala; or advocating for social justice- she just knocks our socks off!

What are some of the service projects you've done?
I have been a Therapeutic Recreation Mainstream/Inclusion Companion volunteer, helping children with special needs participate in summer camps. I have raised funds for and awareness about childhood cancer. (A lot of people don’t know that cancer affects children differently than adults, and more research is needed on less toxic therapies for them). In Guatemala, I did different projects- such as installing a stove in a family’s home so they can cook for themselves; constructing a bed so another family didn’t have to sleep on the floor; distributing shoes to families that had outgrown their last pair, and others.

What is some advice you may have that has helped you get through some tough times with anxiety?
To this day, I am figuring out how to help myself with my anxiety. About two years ago, I found a love for writing songs. I have always loved writing lyrics, but now it's becoming more than that. Listening to music is calming too. I have a support system of adults I trust who have known me for a while and that I feel safe talking to. Even with these tools and help I still struggle with anxiety, but I am always working on it and will continue to do so.

Who do you find inspiring?
My 3rd-grade teacher Brittani London, whom I knew as “Ms.O” at the time. My first year at my current school was in 3rd grade, and it was also her first year there. She genuinely loves her students and turns her lessons into memorable ones - which I have always found inspiring, especially now that I teach young children (dance).

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
“Believe in yourself”, “find your inner confidence”, or “be your true self”. Those are all phrases I have heard multiple times- and are important thoughts to have. My personal addition to these is “Don't ‘copy and paste’ because there will always be mistakes.” I coined that quote about four years ago when I tried to follow too much advice in general, trying to be too many people at once. Teens tend to listen to influencer’s or friend's videos, posts, quotes, and more. But when you follow others’ advice, you won’t always get the same outcome as they did.

What do you wish others knew about the LGBTQ community and their families?
Over the years, the world has been more accepting of the LGBTQ community. I want people to know that sharing personal information about anything LGBTQ-related can be very difficult. Not all families will be accepting of the news when people come out, but those who come out cannot change for others. LGBTQ families can be like any family, but unique, which is okay because being different is better than being like everyone else.

What is your family like, and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
My family is extraordinary and one of a kind. Everyone contributes something that makes our family different. My Mami Monica is our organizer, and my Mama Cindy is the creative one. My brother Darien keeps everyone on their toes and loves to make us laugh. My dogs, Coco and Sparkle, are also unique - Coco is visually impaired, and Sparkle is protective. I stand out through my perseverance. If I want something I go after it. I wanted to be a better dancer and student, so I concentrated more. In my family, nobody “fits in.” We go with our flow!

Sara DiVittorio – North Carolina
Nomination and Photography by Words & Pictures by Jeannie DeSena
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination - Sara DiVittorio strives for excellence as an athlete and student and has fun in the process. An Open Champion Irish dancer with the Walsh Kelley School in Charlotte, North Carolina, she earns high placements at regional and international competitions, and she shares her talent by performing in the community. She also enjoys playing rec soccer and basketball. This tenth-grader gets her point across as a member of the Charlotte Catholic High School debate team. Sara takes her commitments seriously but is also quick to share a laugh with her family and friends. She is truly an inspiring teen.

Tell us about your dance career. How did you get started and where are you at with it now?
I have been dancing with the Walsh Kelley School for almost my whole life, starting when I was 3 years old and I fell in love with it. My mom and her sisters all danced growing up and my cousin danced before me, so my family already knew about the Irish dancing world. Over the years, I have climbed through the levels and am proud to say I am now ranked 9th in North America and have competed in the Irish Dancing World Championships twice now against the top 1% of all Irish Dancers around the world.

What do you love most about dance?
The thing I love most about dance is the community. I have met some of my best friends through Irish dance and every dance class and competition, I'm always having fun. My dance school has become like a home to me and my dance teacher, Aine Walsh Kelley, is like my second mom. So, even when a result doesn't go my way or I'm just not having a great day, I always have the absolute best people there supporting me.

What do you think most non dancers don't realize about dancing/dancers?
I think that non dancers don't understand the physical strength that dancing takes. We are not only running through our dances over and over again, but we are doing planks and squats and like a million other things that get me sore just thinking about it. Most dancers around my level are practicing almost every day for several hours and even putting extra practice, workouts, and stretches in at home, so dance is by no chance any less physically draining than any other sport.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
My favorite dance moment was when I placed 7th at the US Nationals. It was my first Nationals since COVID and I wasn't sure how I was going to do, but I tried my best and at awards, it paid off. The announcer called me up for the top 10 and I ran on the stage crying and hugging my friends who were up there with me. Not only was I crying hysterically, but I looked out and my mom, my teachers, and my friends were all crying too. It was one of the best days of my life.

What is an experience you've had through dance that you wouldn't gotten to have if you weren't a dancer?
I have gotten to travel to so many cool places. I've traveled all over the US for competitions and last April, I got to travel to Belfast to compete in the World Championships. Coming up this July, I will compete at the Worlds in Montreal. I'm just so lucky to have been able to see such fabulous places.

How did you find and why did you choose Words & Pictures by Jeannie DeSena for your photographer?
Mrs. DeSena is an Irish dance mom at another dance school in Charlotte and an incredible photographer. She reached out to my mom and I for a Christmas photoshoot because she was looking for a dancer with either a red or green dress and at the time, I had both, so it worked out perfectly.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Mrs. DeSena was amazing. I had never really done a photoshoot before, so I was a little nervous, but she comforted me in no time and got me laughing and smiling during the whole thing. I loved all the little props that she had and had a great time throwing candy canes up in the air, but I might have dropped a few once or twice.

Tell us about your soccer team. What is your favorite memory with them?
I love playing soccer because it is a very low stress activity for me. With just playing in a rec league, all the pressure is off, so in general, every practice and game is incredible because I just get to go out there and do my best, all while having fun.

How long have you been playing basketball, what is your position, and what is a favorite accomplishment with the sport?
I have been playing in church league basketball since I was in 3rd grade. I play point guard because I'm pretty short. My favorite thing about basketball is that my dad is my coach and I get to spend time with him. Every time we win a game, we both get to celebrate together afterwards.

What is the most interesting topic you've had for debate? What side were you on? What was your argument?
I compete in the Public Forum division of Debate, so I I compete in the Public Forum division of Debate, so I compete with my partner and one of my best friends, Nadine. The cool and kind of hard thing about debate is that before you go in, you have to be ready to defend both sides of the argument. My favorite topic and the most challenging was one about cryptocurrency last year. It is incredibly confusing, but I learned a ton preparing for that case and now I sound really smart when talking about it with adults, which, to me, is one of the best parts.

What is a tradition or special activity at your school that you love to participate in?
I love all the sports events at my school, Charlotte Catholic High School. We have an absolutely amazing student section with fun themes for every game. So, on game nights, I go all out with tutus and ribbons and glitter and then go and cheer my heart out with all of my friends. It's so fun that I normally lose my voice the day after.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I don't get much free time because I love being busy, but when I do, you can normally find me curled up on the couch in my PJs, probably watching FRIENDS. Even though I've seen it like a million times, it never fails to make me laugh.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think that the most inspiring thing about me is my work ethic. With whatever I’m doing, I’m always sure to put 110% into it, especially with dance. I’m in the dance studio anywhere from 3-7 days a week and it’s really a full year sport. It can be a lot, but I’m always striving to do my best dancing in every single practice.

What else would you like to talk about?
I’m also a kid that loves to be on the go! I’m always doing something whether it’s dance, school, debate, or like a million other things that I pack my schedule with. My friends and family always laugh when I tell them that I want to get back to dance after taking like a 1 day break. I just love having something to do!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Something that I’m very passionate about is the awareness of dance as a sport. A lot of people don’t understand the work and the many hours that go into dancing. They assume we just get dressed up all pretty and prance around the stage, but it’s way more than that. In the dancing world, I have personally witnessed the blood, sweat, and tears that each dancer puts into each practice and each competition, so anyone that tries to discredit dancing hasn’t really seen what dancing truly is.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
My most difficult accomplishment was qualifying for Worlds. I worked for years, trying to get my dancing good enough to hopefully find myself in one of those rare spots.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to do everything you do with 100% of your energy, even small practices or homework assignments. You're not going to do your greatest unless you put your very best effort into it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be in a college that I absolute love on my way to becoming an orthodontist. I'm not sure what college yet, but I'll figure that one out in a few years.
What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I absolutely love listening to music by Taylor Swift. She is definitely my favorite artist and I probably know every single word to every single one of her songs,

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I'm good at pool/billiards. We have a pool table in my house, so I'm constantly playing either with my family or alone whenever I'm bored, but over time I've gotten pretty good.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three bucket list items for me are definitely visiting Greece, seeing a show on Broadway, and meeting Taylor Swift. Although, I'm not sure that last one's going to happen.

Tell us about the Drill Team. What do you do in it and what do you love most about it?
Drill Team is made up of about 30 girls right now and we learn different routines/dances that we perform and take to competition against other schools/teams. I love learning the different routines and styles of dances.

What does your role as the Team Captain mean to you?
It means so much because I love to teach and lead. It means accepting responsibility for my team and setting the standard of what it means to be a great teammate.

What have you learned about yourself while in this role?
I have learned that I am mentally, physically, and emotionally stronger than I thought I was. I learned that it's a huge responsibility to be a leader/role model. I've learned that I can't please everyone, but I will always strive to do what's best for my team as a whole.

What has your soccer career been like?
I started playing AYSO when I was 5 years old. It has been really fun and challenging. I am currently still playing soccer any chance I get.
My favorite accomplishment with soccer is making the All-Star team every year. Soccer has helped me build my confidence and helped inspire me to be a team player on and off the field.

What is Native American Ribbon Dancing and how did you get involved?
It is a Traditional dance that is performed by the women of the Paiute Tribe. I got involved because I wanted to be in touch with my cultural roots and traditions. I am a proud member of the Bishop Paiute Tribe and it's important for me to keep our traditions alive to pass on to future generations.

Tell us about your strong passion for dancing and teaching others to dance.
My strong passion for dancing comes from within and makes me feel strong and connected to other dancers. When I dance, I feel happy with no negativity weighing me down. When I teach others to dance it makes me feel influential. I hope to inspire others to feel confident about themselves and dance.

What is your favorite subject to study in school and what is the most fascinating thing you've learned so far this year?
My favorite subject to study in school right now is Science, and everything I've learned this year has been interesting honestly. My Science teacher Mr. Willy is really fascinating.

How did you find and why did you choose Michael McDermott Photography for your photographer?
Michael McDermott took photos for my family, and I loved them. I also follow him on social media and admire all of his work. Mike made the photo session exciting, and comfortable the entire time. I feel like Mike is very dedicated to getting the best shots. You can tell by every one of his photos, how much pride he puts into his photography. Michael McDermott Photography is #1.

What else would you like to talk about?

I would like to talk about my heritage/pride in being a Paiute Native American.

What is a favorite custom or tradition you practice from your heritage?
Ribbon dancing and dancing in the Powwow for all the people. For the young, elderly, healthy and ill, and anyone that can't. I love to dance for the people that surround me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present the topic of leadership. I would discuss my experience with becoming the Captain of Drill Team at my middle school and how it affected me negatively and positively in my life. I am so passionate about dancing and teaching, so it was my goal to become a leader in Drill Team. When I was announced as Captain, I couldn't be happier. The happy feeling quickly faded when I learned how hard it was going to be to teach/lead other peers that weren't as happy about my new position. It showed me that not everyone will celebrate my success, but it also taught me to be strong, confident, & humble all at the same time. Leadership is a big responsibility.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am an energetic, strong minded dancing Paiute girl with big dreams, that comes from a small town. I am the oldest sibling in my family, and I take this position very seriously because I know I have younger siblings looking up to me, and I want to lead by example.
I am full of faith and a strong believer in giving it my all in anything I do. I like to stay humble and thankful for my life. Family means everything to me because they are my biggest supporters and inspire me to be my best every day.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
I would like to talk about how grateful I am to be given the opportunity to be in this magazine coming from such a small town.

Scotlyn Banfield – Oklahoma
Nomination & Photography by Laci James Photography LLC
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Scotlyn is inspiring all around. She is always determined, committed, faithful, positive, and always happy! She dreams big and is encouraging to all. She is a wonderful role model not only for her school and friends but even community! Most importantly she respects all and treats everyone with the kindest heart I have ever seen!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I work with special needs kids during their classroom time as well as being a part of our school’s student council and teaching young kids tumbling classes.

What led you to working with special needs?
My mom has taught special needs kids for years and would bring me to work with her sometimes, so I got to see firsthand how difficult everyday things, that we take for granted, are for them. It’s a very special thing to build those connections and to see them grow and embrace their disabilities.

What do you love most about it?
I love forming friendships. My favorite thing is to build those friendships because it makes their special moments so much more special because they share them with you. Their perseverance truly inspires me everyday.

What have you learned about yourself in the process?
I’ve learned that I really rely on bonds and friendships so being able to have those relationships has really helped me grow as a person in every way.

What is your role in the student council?
I am a part of our leadership council, so I help plan events fundraisers, and our annual STRUT week.

What has been a favorite thing you've gotten to help plan in school council?
STRUT week has for sure been my favorite. There were so many fun things throughout the week but knowing the end result and that we were helping raise money for someone who really needed it was better than everything.

What has been a favorite memory teaching young kids tumbling?
I have so many laughable memories from this job. Kids can be so funny, but my favorite memory is a little 3 year old looking me in the eyes and saying “Wow you really let yourself go this week.” Nothing is more humbling than a pre-schooler telling you how bad you look.

What has been the best part of your senior year so far, and what are you most looking forward to next before you graduate?
My favorite part thus far has been homecoming week. I love when our community comes together for events, so homecoming was definitely my kind of week. I am really looking forward to my last Prom. Our junior class is fantastic at planning so I know it’s going to be so fun.

How did you find and why did you choose Laci James Photography LLC for your photographer?
My best friend did her senior pictures through Laci and I loved the way they turned out so when I heard about her ambassadorship I was so excited.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
It was so much fun. She has a way of making you feel so comfortable in front of the camera. I love how kind she is and just how she makes me feel so genuinely beautiful.

Picture

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about being involved as much as I can and striving to be able to be the best positive role model that I can be.

What are some of the things you are involved in that are not mentioned above?
I am in National Honor Society as well, so I do a lot of community service. I get the great opportunity to be constantly involved in my community and I absolutely love it.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
The importance of mental health because I think it is crucial to have accessible resources in order to help teens and young adults in this hard, trying, part of their lives.

What do you think is the hardest thing teens face right now, and what is a solution for it?
I think the biggest thing teens face right now is social media and comparison. It is so difficult see girls on social media websites and not feel like your less than. I think the best way to solve this is for people to stop photoshopping and be real on social media. Instead of doing away with social media we just need to shift our mindsets about it.

Who inspires you?
My mom is the most inspirational person in my life. Seeing her patience and perseverance in her job is the most inspiring thing to me.
