Nikolai Galipeau  - Maine
Nomination & Photography by StewartSmithPhotography.com
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Nikolai's community is riddled with drugs and to stay out of trouble he has chosen to focus on his schoolwork, sports, working out and to join the military to serve our country. Nikolai works hard at a local restaurant while also helping people throughout his community.

Tell us about your school and what you will miss most about it.
I go to Penquis Valley Highschool. I will miss my friends, teammates,  and coaches. I also play sports for Foxcroft Academy. I will miss my teammates and coaches there as well!

What have you loved most about being a senior this year?
Being captain of all my sports teams, and working hard with my teammates. The freedom of knowing what is to come with the military, so I have been doing everything to prepare for that.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
I don't have a favorite class this year but usually my favorite classes are health and physical education.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Fitness and sports.

What sports do you play?
Hockey. Soccer, and Track and field.

Which is your favorite and why?
Hockey,  it's a challenge and you have to think ahead.

What else would you like to talk about?
I think it's important to have a healthy body and mind. Health is extremely important and what you put into your body. What you feed your body and how you treat yourself is important. I can't stress that enough, if you don't feel good you should look at what you are eating.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
My mother has worked with him in the past. I just always knew that he was professional and easy to work with. It seemed so quick and easy to what I thought it was going to be. We actually laughed and had a great time.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
Probably, that day of the shoot. We laughed a lot, especially at peoples reactions to us trying to get some of the shots we were trying to get. We had to climb under and over some places most people wouldn't think to go.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
To show others from my area that we are something and can get out. To do more than what is asked. If you are going to do something put your heart into it. Don't just do it baseline. Push yourself as hard as you can to be better and better each time. That's how you change. How you make progress.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
I will use it to push myself to be better and to gain more traction in my life. Further myself in my goals. They may change depending on what I am doing in my Military career at that time.

Look for Nikolai in issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!

Ayla Longacre – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Alex Spence Photography
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ayla, is Senior Class President. I truly believe she was chosen to lead her classmates not just for her resume, but for her big heart! Over the past 6 years, Ayla has competed in multiple speech competitions where her main goal was not to win, but to share her ideas and spread that message of hope and love to her fellow community. Ayla is involved in tons so let’s just name a few; Volleyball, Swim, Teen Institute, Ohio Attorney General Teen Ambassador Board, Marion Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Program and the Paul Robeson Speech Academy.

What is most rewarding about being the Senior Class President?
The most rewarding thing about being Senior Class President is getting to be a role model for others. I try and do this in every leadership role or activity that I participate in but being class president is sort of different in the sense that everyone is always looking up to you. You are automatically appointed as a leader but what really matters is what you decide to do with everyone watching.

How would you describe your leadership style?
If I had to describe my leadership style, I would say that I try to include everyone. Some leaders would just push others around and tell them what to do or assign them directly to something that they may not want to do. Instead, I think working together and listening to each others ideas is more important than holding all the power in my own hands.

What has been your favorite leadership activity?
My favorite leadership activity is definitely being on youth board in my local substance free club in my community. Our program is called Teen Institute and is involved with 11 schools in our community. Anyone can join this club however there are a few leaders from each school that are chosen to make up the youth board. We are the representatives from our schools and get to come together outside of school in order to plan events and represent what being substance free really means. This leadership activity has brought me so many opportunities and has given me my best friends.

How did you get involved in speech competitions?
I got involved in speech competitions when I was in the 6th grade. I wrote an essay in elementary school that I had read aloud at an assembly and a year later I was pointed in the direction of the Peace and Freedom Committee who holds the annual Martin Luther King Jr. oratorical contest. I was nervous my first time competing but ever since then, getting to spread my message has never been more pleasing to me as a young woman in this country. I know have competed in a total of 13 contests and many other speaking opportunities.

What is a speech competition like?
When competing in an oratorical contest, things definitely can get a little nerve racking. Usually once you arrive, you check in and find a seat at the front of the room or in the same area as the other competitors. Sometimes I have gone in order of age or in order of a random draw. You then get called to the podium to speak to the audience and the panel of judges who are normally in the front row or in the very back of the room. After everyone has finished speaking, the judges finalize their scores and the winners are announced.

What do you talk about to spread hope and love?
When talking about spreading love and hope to our world, I always make sure to mention a couple of things. We as humans are always so quick to judge one another but we never top to think about how easy it is to do the complete opposite. Instead of resorting straight to hate and violence, we as humans and the future of our world need to stop and choose love. Love will always trump hate and hope will always outweigh injustice. When speaking about this, it is so important for people to hear that you have a voice, and when you decide to use it instead of resorting to violence, change can be made even if it is small.

Tell us about your volleyball career? When did you get started and where aer you at with it now?
I was introduced to volleyball in the 5th grade and started playing once I reached middle school. I fell in love with the sport and continued playing through middle school and eventually got involved in a travel team. I was never the best player on the team but that didn’t matter to me because I just loved having the opportunity to get to play on a court with some of my best friends. However once tried out for the high school team and watched all my friends make jv when I was stuck on the freshman team, I wanted to work harder. That is exactly what I did and it lead me to make varsity the following year where I was a defensive specialist and a right side hitter. The sport was definitely mentally and physically draining but for me it was still about the love I shared within my team and every chance that I got to step onto the court. Even though I am done with my volleyball career it will forever be something I cherish for the rest of my life.

What is your favorite accomplishment with swimming?
My favorite accomplishment with swimming would have to be simply sticking with the sport even when it got hard. I joined freshman year to get the opportunity to be on the same team as my brother and after he left, I always wanted to quit but I never could. I ended up coming back for all 4 seasons and I have no regrets of doing so. I couldn’t imagine what my life would have been life if I quit and never stuck with it. I have won many races, tried many new events and have made so many new friends. Never giving up was hard but in the end it was worth it.

What is Teen Institute and why is it important to you?
Teen Institute is a program within our high schools in the area that promotes being substance free and living a healthy positive lifestyle. We do a lot of events within the community that promotes these messages such as our annual drug free rally and our county wide weekend retreat along with many others. Every event is focused on connecting and strengthening the bond between our youth and the communities we reside in. Teen Institute is so important to me because it demonstrates the power that we as young people hold. All it takes is one young voice to make a small difference but if we all come together, the possibilities are endless.

What are your roles and responsibilities on the Ohio Attorney General Teen Ambassador Board?
My role as a youth on the Ohio Attorney General Teen Ambassador Board, is to find the power the my voice holds and to be a leader representing my hometown of Marion Ohio. A lot of people look at Marion as a town full of trouble and kids who are automatically set up for failure. However this is not true at all because once you discover your voice and the power that it holds, you can create change one step at a time. I have made this discovery and by being apart of this program, I now know that I can change the narrative and become something that others have told me I could never be.

What has been a favorite memory with Marion Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Program?
I think my favorite memory with the Marion Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Program was having the opportunity to speak with Mary Ellen Withrow. I was so inspired by her story of being a woman during a time where people told her that her voice didn’t matter and how she never gave up. Becoming the first woman to be county, state and country treasure shows her hard work and dedication that she had during her years of growth.

What has the Paul Robeson Speech Academy taught you?
The Paul Robeson Speech Academy has taught me the importance of teaching our younger leaders, the importance and power of public speaking. I am honored to hold the position of a mentor to these younger kids because I get to aid them in the discovery of their own voices and peaceful power. Watching them progress from being shy and quite to these outgoing and well spoken prodigies, is something that I will forever cherish. It is so important for our future leaders to know that public speaking is a huge and helpful skill to have when entering young adulthood even into adulthood within their future jobs.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Over the course of my 18 years in this world I have managed to spread my message of love and kindness to hundreds of people around Ohio. With every speech competition that I compete in, It is never about winning for me; it is more about coming to understand who I am and what I stand for.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I have a strong passion about how love can conquer anything in our world. If we take the small amount of time out of our days that it takes to make someone smile or to be seen, so much can be changed. You never know what someone is going through and never know who needs the help. It takes absolutely nothing out of a person to be kind and that is something I will never stop telling people who need to hear it.

What else would you most like to talk about?
I have been involved in Alexis spence photography as a teen representative for about a year now. With every shoot, team bonding, and every way that we give back to our community, I have never felt more blessed to be a part of something so life changing. It is amazing how one group of girls can inspire each other and cheer each other on in everything that they do.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
it was more she found me type of situation. She posted an application to be a rep and my mom happened to come across it. Ever since joining the team I have made new friends. become more confident in myself and must importantly I have learned what it means and feels to make a difference in the world as young adult. The thing that I love the most about this experience is definitely the bond I have created with the other girls and my photographer.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to be in inspiring teen magazine because I want to prove to myself that I can be something and also show other girls entering young adulthood that they can make a difference too. All it takes is one voice, one action or idea to change the world. and this would just be the beginning.

What is a favorite memory you have with the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory of the person who nominated me is all of our shoots. It seems like something memorable always happens when we are together. Which I will cherish for a lifetime. Alexis is such an amazing photographer, a huge supporter and an inspiring mom. Even outside of our shoots she has always supported me by coming to my special events.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I were to win the scholarship money, It would go to paying for college. I am planning on attending either The University of Tennessee or the Ohio State University to study psychology. I will be in school for a while so any and all awards given to me will help towards schooling.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
My dream job, if offered to me today, would have to be a social justice attorney. Speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves and making sure their opinions are heard is something that I will always find passion in doing.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
I would like to thank my mom for being my biggest and number one supporter in everything that I do as well as my family who are always there for me. I would also like to thank my friends for always showing me that I am loved and that I have a support system ready to catch me if I ever shall fall.

Jolie Bolen – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Beautiful Memories Photography By Aurora
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jolie Bolen is a sweet and caring young lady. I watched her through the years coach younger children on her cheer teams and be an inspiration to the younger girls. Although her cheer journey ended, her work with children did not. She took 2 years of classes and became CPR certified to instruct younger kids in school. She thrives on creativity and has a passion for fashion. Her goal, after high school, is to become a Master Cosmetologist where she can share her creativity and eye for beauty with everyone.

Tell us about your cheer career.
My cheer career began when I was five in a tumbling class. I shortly after that joined an all star team and continued to cheer competitively for ten seasons. The journey was hard ,but the outcomes were always worth the hardships. I was so blessed to be coached and supported by some of the best people along side my teammates.

What was your favorite accomplishment with cheer?
My favorite accomplishment from cheer would be my last season when we got invited to the biggest competition of the season. On day one of the competition we did so well we got picked to compete the following day. On day two we competed and placed fifth place in the nation at an invite only competition. This memory is my favorite because my team fought through so much and the reward was worth it in the end. Watching my team celebrate was something I will never forget.

What do you wish others knew about cheerleading?
I wish others knew the time and physical commitment it is. We would have practice multiple times a week for hours. Alongside with competitions on the weekends and being in school it takes a lot. Cheerleading also comes with so many supporters and lifelong friendships which makes it so much easier.

What else would you like to talk about?
I coached the youngest groups of competitive cheerleaders, while competing on my own teams. I still love watching all my former athletes grow and succeed over the years.

What do you love most about coaching younger children?
I love coaching the younger athletes because watching them progress and love a sport I loved. Cheer practice was their way to go somewhere after a bad day at school, when something was going on outside of the doors of the gym, or whatever could be going on outside of the gym they would forget when they would go to practice. They came to practice and could learn new skills or work on their routine. As they progressed and seeing them so excited for their new skills was the best part of it all.

How would you describe yourself as a leader?
I think I’m a leader because I am very outgoing and love to take charge and lead by positive example. I like to see others grow in their passions and what makes them happy.

Tell us about your love for fashion and what it stems from.
I am very creative when it comes to fashion or interior design. I love bright and happy colors ,as they can brighten anything up. My love for fashion I always out credit to my Aunt Diane as my family says I remind them of her all the time. I love to see beauty in everyone.

How would you describe your style?
I think my style is very bright and I love wearing the color pink. My style ranges from cute athletic clothes to dresses. I love wearing colorful and unique clothes as it really brings out who I am.

What is trending right now that you really love, vs a trend you don't love so much?
I really love the bows and lots of pink that is trending right now, the beige aesthetic I don’t love so much because I love all things colorful.

What type of Cosmetology are you interested in?
I am interested in learning how to color, cut, and style hair. Alongside I would love to learn more about extensions in the Cosmetology field.

What are you doing now to prepare for a career in this?
Currently I have scheduled visits to tour and see what school I will be attending in the fall. I have also started looking into future salons and looking at my requirements for school.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
My dream job would be in a hair salon doing extensions, coloring hair, and styling hair making people feel beautiful helping them express themselves.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I was given a gift when it comes to bringing out the beauty in everything. Whether its the bright, happy colors with interior design or the emphasis of natural beauty of another person, I love to create happy places & happy faces. I attribute that gift to my namesake, Aunt Diane.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am intensley passionate about my future. After graduation, I have goals and timelines set and ready to go. College, investing time into my career, building a brand and clientele. I can't wait to get started.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I met Aurora while cheering on the same teams as her daughter. We traveled around the southeast for years competeing with some of the biggest gyms in the country. We had some of the best times. Now we have just as much fun in front of the camera!

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
I was nominated by my photographer and family friend Aurora. Aurora's daughter, Lexy, and I were on multiple competitive teams together. We have gone on multiple trips over multiple seasons for competitions. Making it to Summit Day 2 was one of the biggest highlights for both of us. We placed in the top 5 teams in the country.

Are you a part of a model team with your photographer, and if so, tell us about it.
I am on a senior team and my photographer is Mrs. Aurora. On her team, we have amazing people with themed shoots that are unique and fun while showing individuality between all of us. We have had so much fun this year with our beach shoot, sunflower field shoot, and every other amazing shoot that brings so many laughs to our group.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I am thrilled and humbled to have been nominated. I've watched so many other teens over the years show off their individuality through varous avenues. I'm so excited to have a chance to do the same.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I were to win this scholarship, the money will go towards my college fees & investing my immediate future.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited to graduate and hit that milestone. Then to start towards my future.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list is to go parasailing, travel to another country, and travel to New York around Christmas time.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
I would like to thank my amazing parents and grandparents who have helped me grow to who I am. My whole family has cheered me on my whole life and my friends who have my back everyday. I am so grateful to have a big group of supporters.

Aubrey Bedard

Aubrey Bedard – Maine
Nomination & Photography by StewartSmithPhotography.com
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Aubrey is a Peer Helper at her high school. She and one of her teachers are the driving force behind an annual blanket drive that her two older sisters started in 2014 called Feel Good Fleece. The blanket drive which typically all students in high school get involved in thanks to Aubrey’s leadership, donates about 100 blankets to various charitable organizations like Preble Street, Sweetser, and teen youth centers. I feel she uplifts everyone around her just to be in her presence.
Photography by StewartSmithPhotography.com

Tell us about your role as a Peer Helper.

As a peer helper, my role is to include everyone. For example, if we see someone sitting alone, we take an oath to sit with them and make them feel included. We are also there to help support new students and help them find their way around the school.

What is your favorite accomplishment as a Peer Helper?
Definitely the annual blanket drive! I love hearing stories about how these blanket donations have helped many people.

How would you describe your leadership style in this role?
I strive to set a good example and encourage others to do their best as well.

Why is Feel Good Fleece important to you?
Feel Good Fleece holds great significance for me, not only because it is a family tradition that started with my older sisters but also because it opens your eyes to the impact a simple act of giving can have. We can never truly know the struggles someone else faces. I believe that everyone deserves to feel warmth and love, and this project beautifully brings that to life.

What have your responsibilities with this organization taught you?
I have discovered that my responsibility for leadership manifests in various ways, including providing clear direction, effectively delegating tasks, and inspiring my peers to stay motivated.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Last year I decided to challenge myself with something out of my comfort zone. I ran for USOA Teen Maine and placed First Runner Up in my first-ever pageant experience. My platform is Youth Literacy, emphasizing learning differences, particularly dyslexia, and why early intervention is so important. As a student fortunate to receive a diagnosis in the second grade, I experienced firsthand how critical specific instruction is in the most formative years of education. I hope that one day all educators will know the signs of a learning disability.

How did you get interested in pageantry?
To be honest, I didn't know much about pageantry when I first applied to be the USOA Teen York County. Like many people, I had stereotypical ideas about it; I thought it was just about beautiful girls competing for a crown based solely on their looks. After competing in 2024, I realize it's so much more than that! The most interesting aspect for me is the emphasis on female empowerment, positive self-image, and advocating for community service.

What is something that surprised you while preparing for your first pageant?
That runway walk isn't as simple as it looks! I took so much practice not to fall over in those heels!

What did you learn about Youth Literacy in your endeavors?
I was surprised to learn that elementary educators receive little to no training in recognizing learning disabilities. I believe the key to youth literacy success is early interventions and teaching to each student's unique learning styles.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have been an equestrian since I was 4 years old. For the past three years, I have been training my own young horse in the discipline of Eventing. Eventing is a combined sport of dressage, show jumping, and cross-country riding. Last summer, our qualifying scores enabled us to compete at the Pony Club Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. We received first place in our equation class and placed third overall. It was such an amazing experience!

What is your training schedule like for Eventing?
My training schedule is quite intense during the spring, summer, and fall because it is essential to keep my horse conditioned so that they can compete at their best. Horses are just like any other athletes; the more exercise and strengthening they do, the better they perform. I ride most days and practice the areas where I need to improve in order to enhance my scores.

What do you wish everyone knew about this sport?
Many people think that being an equestrian is easy and do not consider it a sport. I have heard so many times, "The horse does the work; you just sit there." However, it is not as easy as it looks. A horse has a mind of its own, and anything can happen at any moment. Convincing a 1,000 lb+ animal to partner with you and perform requires immense patience and skill.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Anything equine-related! Horses are a huge part of who I am, and I have learned many life skills from my years around them. Throughout history, the relationship between horses and humans has remained steady. From wars fought to serving as a mode of transportation, horses have significantly contributed to the development of our civilization. Now, they offer companionship, can be teammates, and some even work in therapeutic settings. In my opinion, they are the world's most versatile animals. I hope to pursue a career in Equine Science and Management with a focus on reproduction.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Ever since I was little, I wanted to try modeling/acting. My wish was to land some type of equestrian role. As a big dreamer, I was hoping to land a role on Heartland or Yellowstone. As a 10-year-old I was for sure that was my destiny. My photographer, Stewart Smith is local to me and was offering model portfolio-building sessions. My session with him opened a door to pageantry and with my portfolio, I was accepted at The New Englands Model Group. Stewart is fun, and uplifting and genuinely wants his clients to succeed.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
Stewart is USOA's official photographer, so at this past pageant in October 24', he spent the entire weekend working with the contestants. He was the ultimate hype guy and such a pillar of support. On one of those days, we had the option of getting some photographs done in our interview attire. I jumped at the opportunity. Stewart told me to "hit a strong pose", I thought that meant to flex my biceps. We both started laughing hysterically the minute I did that pose!

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine because I want to inspire others with my story and prove that when you take the path less traveled and move away from your comfort zone, so many beautiful doors with fabulous opportunities can open.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I won scholarship money, I definitely would donate to The Children's Dyslexia Center in Portland Maine. This tutoring center, which operates solely on donations, was critical in helping me when I was struggling with reading and writing in my elementary and middle school years. I felt stupid in comparison to my peers but the educators at this center taught me in ways that my brain could understand and helped me regain my self-esteem.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
To work at a reproduction barn with pregnant mares and foals.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
Without a doubt, my mom is the most influential person in my life. I wouldn’t be who I am today without her love and support. She is not only my best friend but also my go-to for advice on everything. She has always been by my side, encouraging me to achieve my goals, and I am forever grateful for that.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
BE YOU! There is no one better than your true authentic self!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Most likely in the barn or visiting my nephew.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Competing in the next USOA 2025 Pageant and touring lots of colleges in the coming months.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Getting through the pain and setbacks from my recent knee surgery was one of the hardest things I have done. Due to a broken bone, I experienced so much pain and was unable to ride my horse or do much of anything for a while.
I overcame this challenge by focusing on the idea that the process was temporary. The more seriously I took my physical therapy, the faster I began to walk again, and the sooner I could ride and play lacrosse. Eventually, I grew stronger and was able to walk again.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up!  Take the path less traveled and always stay true to your authentic self.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself about to graduate from the University of Kentucky with my degree in Equine Sciences and Reproduction.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Jet Skiing, swimming, paddle boarding, anything lake-related!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
It's not really a hidden talent; it's more of a skill. I grew up with a trampoline in my backyard so I'm very good at gymnastics and doing flips.

3 Things on your bucket list
Meet Morgan Wallen, learn to scuba dive, and travel to Europe.

Who do you find inspiring?
My parents inspire me the most. They are both hard-working entrepreneurs who always raise the bar for themselves and encourage everyone around them to do the same.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe that inspiring others starts with maintaining optimism. I enjoy cheering someone up on a bad day through humor.

My favorite family tradition is Christmas morning. Since I was very young me and my brother would run up the stairs at 7:00am sharp where our parents would be waiting for us to open presents. After presents we always have bubble bread before going to our grandparents house!

What do you love most about your community?

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class this year has been my Peer Mentoring class, I’ve taken this class many times because I have a special place in my heart for kids with disabilities. Everyday in class I make it my mission to connect with them to make sure they feel like they belong and school is a safe space. This has taught me to be very patient because these kids are able to think the same way we do it’s just harder to express.

I am often so busy with my extracurricular activities that I enjoy having control of my own schedule to ensure that I have down time to relax.

How do you stay on top of your studies while also being so active?
I always ensure it’s my top priority, sometimes leading to long nights and little sleep but I’m fortunate enough to be able to be apart of many things that I love so I wouldn’t change my schedule for a thing.

What are your jobs like and what have you learned from them?
My jobs are very busy and fasted paced. They are also filled with amazing people who have taught me a lot. I have learned how to be a great leader, independent woman, and a better person. I’m very grateful to have met so many amazing people.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am passionate about the sport of volleyball, I am planning on going into sports marketing for my college major.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
I would to be a manger/marketer of a women’s sports team! To increase the participation in women’s sports.

Tell us about your volleyball career. When did you get started and where are you at with it now?
My mom was a very big inspiration to my volleyball career. For as long as I can remember I was in the gym chasing balls for my mom. I have completed 6 years of club volleyball and 5 years of varsity volleyball and am continuing my volleyball career next year and at the University of Stevens Point Wisconsin.

How do you spend your time peer mentoring students with special needs?
I spend at least an hour of each day with kids with special needs, I find it my mission to connect with each one of them personally to ensure they feel like they belong. I enjoy playing games, running around, and definitely making jokes with them.

Talia Campobasso – Maine
Nomination & Photography by stewartsmithphotography.com
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Talia helps out with unified basketball, volunteers for her community & school by helping set up the craft fair, assists the boosters with events, volunteer freshman helper, volunteers her time for project grad & anything to help others! She is also a member of the leadership council in her school and has participated in the Youth Identity Summit and plans to attend the State House in March with leadership council. She's also received the coaches award for cheerleading. She's been an all American cheerleader nominee with NCA and also captain of the cheering team.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Another one of my passions has been lacrosse which I have played since third grade and continued into high school. I was unable to continue playing my junior year, however, due to obtaining multiple concussions over the years. Still wanting to be a part of my team, I talked to my coach & my doctor. We decided that becoming the Varsity Manager was the best decision for me at that time. I continued to be the best that I could be in that role even though it was hard for me to watch the sport I love from the sideline.

What else would you like to talk about?
I overcame adversity turning a negative experience with Cheerleading into a positive one. I had to make the very difficult decision to quit Winter cheer my junior year which was devastating since I loved doing it and it has been a part of who I was since starting high school.
I didn’t want to let the situation stop me from being involved with my school and being active, so I joined unified basketball, which has been something I’ve always wanted to do. Since then, I have become a positive influence on those who I help on the basketball team.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk about makeup, hair, self growth, how important it is to take care of yourself, cosmetology school, the importance of the environment kids are raised in and friendships.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I found my photographer from him doing the photo shoot & poster for a Semi-pro Cheerleading/dance Team my mom was on years ago then doing my sister’s Senior photos a few years ago. I wanted to continue the tradition so I contacted him for my Senior photos.

My experience was really good! We tried a lot of new, fun ideas and poses and the settings we went to were really pretty. What I love the most was how easy Stewart is to connect with.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory was when Stewart texted me saying he had a new photo shoot idea for me and asked me to bring anything “American flag-ish” that I had. He had a really cool idea to do with an American flag backdrop and the feel of a country album cover. He was soo excited about this idea for me & the shoot! The day we went to the shoot, it was just really fun and I had a great time with trying different things

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
There are many reasons why I want to be in Inspiring Teen Magazine. One reason is that it’s a true honor and privilege to be in the magazine. Another reason is that I hopefully can inspire others to be the best version of themselves. And, as well, showing teens that putting themselves out there & going out of their comfort zone can create growth & opportunities.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
I would definitely put it towards college, savings or cosmetology school because you can’t go wrong with investing in yourself.

Nomination: Mayson Brown is an incredible person, with such a positive and uplifting spirit! She is a great friend, cheerleader, and pursuing a dream of becoming a successful hairstylist, which is truly inspiring. Her inner and outer beauty shine through in everything she does. She is incredibly talented when she touches hair. It’s amazing to know someone who brings so much energy and encouragement to others and makes them feel beautiful. The work we have created together is amazing and I enjoy taking her photos.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I feel that I am strong and capable of handling anything that comes my way. I strive to focus on the good in every situation and always acknowledge my strengths and focus on areas that I need to improve. I do NOT give up easily, and whenever in doubt, I remember God above all.

What else would you like to talk about?
I was raised in Round Rock, Texas, and attended school through 6th grade. Before starting 7th grade my family moved to the small town of Crane, Texas. This was a nerve-racking situation for me because I was anxious about being the new girl in town. I was terrified the girls would be mean and rude to me. To my surprise it was the exact opposite. Everyone was so welcoming and nice, and I fit right in.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am extremely passionate about hair, makeup, nails and fashion. I like to be up to date on all the new fashion trends. Ever since I was a little girl, I have had a passion and love for anything relating to cosmetics and clothing. Recently, working out at the gym has become another one of my passions and probably my favorite one. Prioritizing my health and well-being has been the best decision I have made.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I met my photographer, Lily, doing a photoshoot with a friend and from that moment I knew her work was amazing! Lily continues to capture special moments for me, from school pictures, candids and family pictures. Lily makes the experience fun, easy and enjoyable.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
One of my favorite memories with Lily was the time she was going to shoot our family pictures. We were scheduled to take pictures around 6:00 p.m. on a Saturday. That day the electricity went out in Crane. Lily contacted my mom throughout the day trying to figure out a time to reschedule. The electricity finally came back on around 6:00 p.m., and we were scrambling to get dressed, Five people trying to get ready as quickly as possiblewas not easy. We made it happen and met Lily around 7:00 p.m.The photos came out amazing!

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
As a little girl growing up, I looked up to older girls as role models and that has always inspired me to be a role model to younger children. In the crazy society we live in today, I just want to be able to shine a light and be a positive role model to others.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
I will utilize the scholarship money to further my education in cosmetology and obtain a bachelor’s degree in business.

All 3 years of my high school track and field participation, I was the MPC All-Conference Pole Vault Champion. As well as my sophomore year, I was the Upper Peninsula Pole Vault Champion.

I feel as though I could talk forever about the medical field. I will always be fascinated with the way medical technology can portray the inside of the human body onto a screen.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Jen is a local photographer who specializes in senior portraits. She has been doing senior portraits for many years and it shows in her work. She is such a heart warming and bubbly person to be around. My experience was lovely. The thing I loved most is how experienced and professional she is. She knows the right lighting, poses, and her editing is beautiful.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory with Jen is how she got into the water to get the perfect shot of me in the lake with the sunset in the background. She then laid down in the sand to get a lower perspective shot. Once she stood up she looked like sand man and everyone at the beach probably thought she was crazy.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to be in the magazine because I would love to get Jasperhill Photography tons of recognition. Her work is beautiful and she is so dedicated to her job. During my session, we were at the beach and she got in the water right alongside of me to get the right shot.

Isabella Roberson

2/11/2025

Picture

Isabella Roberson – Texas
Nomination by Karis Ginn
Photography by Morgan Schmidt
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Isabella Roberson is an active leader in her community spiritually and physically. She participates in many sports and academic events where she inspires and encourages those around her. Lifting people up and being there for those who need it are her main goals in everything. Academically, she is Salutatorian of her class and models a hardworking student-athlete. Spiritually, she is a role model for those entering a Christian life. She is an active FCA member that loves the Lord and shows it every day. Her smile and attitude brightens anyone’s day and makes those around her better.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Inspiring people has always been my passion since I want to be the woman that young girls look up to. I want to become an orthodontist and every example I've had in my life has been male. So, I want to be the strong, dedicated doctor that girls see and aspire to be. I've come a long way from mental health issues to facing harsh bullying from my peers so it's gratifying to know that even though I've gone through a lot in my life, I can be there for others.

What else would you like to talk about?
The last topic I'd like to touch on about myself is my selflessness. I'm not usually a person to go on and on about who I am and what I care about since I've let myself be put in the shadows to let others shine. However, I think this quality about myself allows empathy to flourish in my heart and create beautiful bonds with others.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Personally, I love talking, almost too much. But, something I can talk about forever is my love for the Lord. I've been a devout Christian for a year now, since I got baptized in January 2024. Ever since that amazing experience, I've been on fire for the Lord. I read the Bible every morning, pray for even my least favorite people, and trust the Lord with my whole heart. I know this is a controversial subject in Today's society, but, Christ has put it on my heart to show my love for Him in as many ways as possible.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
My photographer is actually my cousin, but we've gotten closer as I've gotten older. I love my cousin and she made my first photoshoot so much fun and a light-hearted experience. I loved the silly poses she made me do and how comfortable she made me feel.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory with Karis has to be when we went to trivia night at a local restaurant. I've been there before but Karis has never been, so I took her, her boyfriend, and my best friend with me to try it out. Karis and I were stressing over our clothes and calling for so long before we left. But, we had so much fun and laughed a lot. Even though we lost, we still enjoyed being with each other and getting our competitive sides out. I wouldn't have done it with anyone else.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I would love to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine since I would love to get my story out into the world. I feel as though I could inspire so many young girls that read magazines like this and help any struggling girls feel like they have a chance in the world. I also would love to use this magazine to get a chance to spread the gospel and hopefully grow people's relationships with God.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I win a scholarship, I will use it to help fund my college education. I will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall, on the Pre-Dental track. This money will help fund my dreams of becoming an orthodontist and being able to help people in unconventional ways.

Nomination: Ellie Posey is truly an inspiration to others. Ellie volunteers much of her time each week motivating younger, at-risk students to reach their potential. She volunteers her time in her church and community while maintaining a perfect GPA and being involved in multiple school organizations including being captain of the danceline. Ellie's positive attitude and disciplined work ethic make her a teen that everyone- young and old- should aspire to be more like.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Ellie's long-term goal is to major in business and open her own dance studio. She has already begun working on meeting that dream by co-oping during the week at the local city hall where she is receiving excellent hands-on business experience in a real-world setting. Maintaining a high GPA while working and still participaing in multiple school activites and organizations is truly inspiring and shows that Ellie will not settle until her dreams have been met.

What else would you like to talk about?
Ellie's love for the arts doesn't end with dance. She also has a love for music. This started from a very early age with the piano and has evolved over the years to multiple instruments. Ellie has participated in the high school jazz band, honor band and handbell choir throughout junior high and highschool. Ellie's true love is the piano, but she can play several instruments including bass guitar and percussion. She has performed alongside her sibling and father at many local festivals and school functions such as peprallys and talent shows.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Dance is something Ellie never tires of discussing. Having danced from age four, she is passionate about bettering herself as a dancer. As a danceline captian she helped dancers learn proper techniques and form. She has also lead elementary dance camps where she taught young children basic dance steps and routines. Ellie aspires to open her own dance studio in the future so that she can be an inspiration to other young children just as her mentor teachers were to her throughout her childhood.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Each year Yellowhammer Photography has auditions for their modeling team. The team consists of juniors and seniors from the local area. Over the course of the year, the models participate in several unique photo shoots. Ellie had the honor of being chosen as part of the modeling crew throughout both her junior and senior years. Because of Yellowhammer, Ellie found a hidden confidence inside of her when she's in front of a camera and developed lifelong friendships. The owners of Yellowhammer are hands-down the best! Their talent, uniqueness, and the relationship they develop with each girl can't be matched!

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
As a teacher, Mrs. Heptinstall has been a role model in Ellie's life for many years. Ellie's senior year has been especially special because she has been able to work closely with Mrs, Heptinstall through the school Big Brothes/Big Sisters Mentor Program. Ellie visits her classroom weekly where she mentors at-risk students. Ellie looks forward to these weekly visits, because Mrs. Heptinstall is always waiting for her with a smile, encouragment and advice about difficult college decisions. As a matter of fact, she is one of the main adults who have encouraged her to pursue dancing in college.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
What an honor it would be to be featured in Inspiring Teens Magazine! Ellie has worked so hard throughout high school, and to have her accomplishments recognized for others would mean so much. Hopefully the recognition in Inspiring Teens will lead to other opportunities for scholarships and honors. Being able to give back to Yellowhammer Photography publicly by giving them the credit for their amazing photography would be such as gift to them as well.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
Scholarship money would go directly toward college tuition. Although Ellie hopes to receive financial assistance through her college, it will not cover most expenses. Elaina Putonti – Texas
Nomination & Photography by RichardParker.io
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Elaina is an exceptional young woman, a follower of Christ, an uber talented dancer and loves people. She dances for both West Austin Dance Academy and Lake Travis High School Cavalettes. Dance is in her soul. Elaina has a bright future ahead of her and will, day in and day out, excel and inspire others to live their best life, whether in class, on the field, or in the studio. Cheers to Elaina!
Photography by RichardParker.io

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I spend a lot of time volunteering and I earned the President's Volunteer Service Award. I am a member of the Lake Travis chapter of National Charity League where I volunteer at our local assisted living and the Central Texas Food Bank. I've assisted dance classes and ran rehearsals at my dance studio earning myself Assistant of the Year. I spend a lot of my time with these girls and I love them so much. I also volunteer in the kids ministry at my church. It touches my heart to watch these kids express their love for God.

What else would you like to talk about?
I want to travel and explore as many places as I can. When I tell people how much I love to travel, they often ask "where is one place you want to visit?", but I want to go everywhere and I don't have a favorite place I've gone. I have been lucky enough to travel to Europe multiple times as well as many places in the United States. There are many more on my list. I enjoy learning new languages and getting to use them. Another thing about travel that I enjoy is learning about different cultures' architecture and history.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I cannot remember a time when I was not fascinated with history. Growing up, I loved watching old movies with my Nana, and my Grandpa would teach me about history and genealogy. When I learned how to read, Historical Fiction became my favorite genre, and it still is! Many people see history as dates and irrelevant stories, but there is so much more. There are people that did and survived incredible things yet they are forgotten, but I believe that they should be remembered and celebrated.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
We met my photographer, Richard Parker, through another dancer's family. I was invited to be on his modeling team and I am on my second year. Richard is very creative and artistic. Whenever he has an idea, it happens. One time we even made a dress out of newspaper! With Richard anything and everything is a possibility.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
This past summer, Richard (my photographer) and I were taking photos on top of a stool in a shallow river when we had an idea for me to completely lay in the water. I have sensory processing issues, so getting past my mental block was hard to do. Once I got past it, we had so much fun and the photos ended up amazing!

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
My photographer surprised me with this nomination, but I am honored to be the inspiring teen he thought of. My day to day goal in life is to be a light for other to know that they are not alone. I want to be featured in Inspiring Teens Magazine to reach more people, so they know no matter who they are, what they believe or what they are going through, they will always have people that are rooting for them.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
I would use it to travel. There are so many more places I want to see and share with others. The money will bring me wealth in memories and experiences, which is something that I believe is a million times more valuable than any material thing I could buy.

Tell us about your religion and why it is so important to you.
I have been a Christian for my whole life. I have had my struggles, but God has always lifted me up. A struggle that I have fought with, but is also a gift, is being an Empath. This means I can feel other people’s emotions and understand people to a higher level. It takes a strain on my mind, but it has also helped me to share God with others who need him in their life.

What has dance taught you?
Dance has taught me more things than I may know. It has taught me how to connect with people sometimes without using words. With dance, you are a part of something so much larger than just yourself. You learn to think about how everything you do can affect your team.

What is your favorite accomplishment in dance?
My favorite accomplishment in dance has been anytime that I have been able to connect with someone and made them feel something through my dancing.

What is a dance memory you will never forget?
My favorite memory is actually a pretty recent one. My team and I were dancing with our seniors for the last time on a stage we’d grown up competing together on. The audience was filled with other dancers, teachers, and family members. We were doing a contemporary about the dark side of fame. Once we were offstage, we were all crying and were told the audience was also in tears because they could feel how much we loved each other.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
One of the best lessons I have ever learned is that God’s plan will never fail you. There have been things in my life that I wanted more than anything, but I didn’t get them. I realize they were never really meant for me, but I never would’ve known that if they were given to me.

Falyn Dugas – Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by Kimberly Durio Photography
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Falyn Dugas is probably the most inspirational teen I've met. She has the friendliest personality of anyone, she is an excellent student, athlete, excels on the fishing team, hunts with her family, took an older horse out of pasture and trained him to compete in English riding competitions. I don't think there is anything she can't do; she helps her community and friends and is always willing to lend a hand to anyone!
Photography by Kimberly Durio Photography

What do you love most about school?
Having the opportunity to make lifelong friendships. As well as having the support from great teachers and mentors.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class is Agriculture, where we have the ability to express our creativity. Learning how to create projects, using new tools, and working with others taught me that communication is key to solving problems.

What sports do you play, and what have sports taught you?
Playing softball and English riding has taught me to be patient and work through adversity.

Tell us about your time on the fishing team. When did you get started and where are you at with it now?
Fishing has been a part of my life since the day I was born. My whole family enjoys fishing, and I am no exception. My brother started the fishing team at our high school, and I wanted to continue what he started. Last year I placed 2nd in the championship tournament. I can’t wait to see what this year brings!

What do you most love to fish for?
Bass is what we fish for in the high school tournaments, but I also love saltwater fishing for redfish, speckle trout, garfish, and red snapper.

What is your proudest moment in fishing?
My proudest moment in fishing is being able to fish and have quality time with my dad, who is my coach.

What is a great experience you've had hunting with your family?
Being able to travel to other states and experience hunting in new places with my family. Spending time together is something we all enjoy.

What led you to train a horse for competitions?
Growing up on our farm where my great grandfather trained racehorses was my inspiration. I knew that if I put my mind to it, I could train one of the retired racehorses to jump.

What did you learn about yourself during this process?
In this process I learned that patients and determination can help you achieve your goals.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
My ideal dream job would be anything in the wildlife conservation field.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
I would like to thank my parents for helping me become the person I am today and always supporting me in everything I do.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
This year I was elected President of both our schools FFA and 4-H programs. While this does take up a good bit of my time, I am also committed to raising and maintaining the highest quality broilers for showing in 4-H. I also pride myself on being a part of our school's meat judging and carpentry teams where we compete on the state level. I am a member of the National Honors Society, while maintaining a 4.4 GPA and will be attending Louisiana Tech University to pursue a degree in Forestry and habitat management.

What else would you like to talk about?
Ever since I was a little girl, at Christmas time my mom always had a bake night for me and my cousins. This started my love for baking and inspired me to creatively bake and decorate cakes for our family and friends. They now request my cakes for holidays and events. This is something I thoroughly enjoy, and it helps me to express my creativity.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
One of the things I am most passionate about is being a horse owner, trainer, and athlete. Working with horses in equine science taught me many different skills like animal behavior and psychology, problem solving skills, patience and consistency, teamwork and communication, safety practices, time management, and responsibilities. Being from south Louisiana I am also very passionate about maintaining our state's fish and wildlife population. Growing up, hunting and fishing has been a way of life. I look forward to hunting season every year as well as being a member of our local CCA chapter.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Mrs. Kim is near and dear to my family's heart. My dad is an electrical lineman, and she has captured many photos of him over the past 20 years. She was also my brother's senior photographer in 2020 during the covid pandemic. Mrs. Kim makes every session exciting and fun. She's not afraid to take my ideas and run with them. She encourages me to be creative and captures my passions through her photography.

Are you a part of a model team with your photographer, and if so, tell us about it.
My photographer picks two reps from each high school in the area, and I was selected to be one of the representatives for my high school.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory with Mrs. Kim was for one of my brother's senior sessions. We were at a location, and she nominated me as a helper for the day. I had to help with props which included our very active and noble hunting dog, who wanted to do nothing more than play in the water.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
To inspire teens and young adults to pursue their passions, whatever they may be. Encouraging each and every one of us to march to the beat of our own drum! Be who you want to be and shine your light on the world.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I win a scholarship, it will go towards my college education. I feel blessed to be nominated for this opportunity and grateful to be considered an Inspiring Teen.

Sophia Grayson – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Tiffany Grayson
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sophia was born a super-preemie with a joint disorder and limb differential. She has overcome multiple surgeries to help correct some of her physical issues. Now a senior in HS with a 4.23 GPA, Sophia has worked hard, earning a scholarship and roster spot on the Carson-Newman University Varsity Archery Team, starting Fall 2025. Sophia is ranked top 30 in the nation for her archery classification and age by USA Archery and is reigning champion of several state tournaments. Sophia is an overcomer! She did not let her physical challenges define her and wants to encourage others.

What do you wish people to know about your joint disorder and limb differential?
People ask why do all the medical work if some of my issues will aren’t “fixable.” Usually, I explain that it was done to maximize my quality of life. Part of having arthrogryposis is you only have mobility one way or another. An example I use is my knee. I had surgery so it straightens and supports my weight properly. However, now my knee has a limited range of how much it will fold. I traded mobility one way for the other. This is one of the things that people get confused by, that nothing will ever be completely “fixed.” (100).

What is something positive that has come from your physical issues?
I think a positive is what they taught me. They were things like it is okay to break and have to put yourself back together again. I have always been fiercely independent so when I felt absolutely shattered, I had to learn to lean on other people and let them help pick me up. I learned how to face the parts of myself and my story that I hated and figured out how to cherish them. Most importantly learned that I was fearfully and wonderfully made, even with all the cracks and scars I sometimes see in the mirror.

What is the hardest part of maintaining a 4.23 GPA?
Probably the hardest part is keeping up with school while also competing in my sport. I just came back this weekend after shooting in a national tournament. I have a macroeconomics project, a debate, and a quiz to prepare for today. However, right now all I want to do is sleep! These are the days that are hard, and I remind myself of my GPA and why I am doing the work. Although I want to relax, my hard work would go to waste if I were to give up and take a nap instead of finishing my macroeconomics presentation.

What has been your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
I really have enjoyed all my classes this year, but my favorite at the moment is my dual enrollment Sociology 102 class. I was slightly worried because I had never taken a sociology class before, but I love learning about how human behavior and culture works. I am a big fan of forensic science, and so I like the crime side of understanding how people work, and so it has been interesting to learn all about culture and society and the environment that shapes people and how they interact.

What else would you like to talk about?
People often ask how I started doing archery. I actually tried it for the first time at a camp. Then when I started at a new school, they had a team that allowed fifth graders to join! I made the team and shot for seven years. I wanted to take my skills to the next level. Opportunities arose outside school for me to shoot even in the midst of some really difficult medical seasons. Last year I was able to compete at national tournaments and given a chance to shoot collegiately. My dream is to shoot in the Olympics.

What do you love most about archery?
I love that it is all about beating yourself. Although you do want to win against other people, no one is responsible for the shots you make except you. Although this can be hard when you fail, it creates a drive and motivation to improve that I do not think comes in some other sports. I love the fact that every time I step up to the line, I must make a choice to either succeed or fail because how I perform is completely up to me.

What is a favorite memory in archery that you will never forget?
I think one of my favorite memories is my first tournament when I was around twelve years old. I was brand new and was probably only five feet tall if not shorter than that at the time. I remember vividly missing the target completely and splitting a clipboard in half which was sitting on top of the target. My coach afterwards told me jokingly that it took more skill to hit the thin little clipboard than the target, and I should have won the entire tournament.

What is your archery team like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
Interestingly enough, I just finished competition with the U.S. Regional Elite Team. I aged out and am getting ready for shooting with the Carson Newman team in the fall. I think over the years with the various teams I have been on, I always have been the oldest or the most experienced. With the Regional Elite Team however, although i was the eldest originally, I was also the least experienced. This was really daunting at first, but still a wonderful experience, and I made a lot of awesome friends.

What are you most looking forward to at Carson-Newman University other than archery?
I think one of the things I am most excited about is getting a fresh start. I have loved high school and the friends I have made at home, but I am ready to meet new people and start a new chapter of my life. I also am so so excited to study fine art. I am mostly self-taught when it comes to painting and drawing so getting the opportunity to fine tune and hone my skills in a classroom is super exciting.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover this, but at the core of who I am, I am a child of God. That may mean a lot to some people and very little to others, nevertheless it would be untrue to say that I have made it this far is because of anything I have done on my own. God has guided my steps throughout my life; I would have never been able to be the person I am if I had not surrendered my life to Him.

Tell us more about your relationship with God.
I accepted Christ in kindergarten. However, I did not understand what it meant to follow Him until I was older. After facing many physical and emotional battles over the years, I became angry with God for allowing my suffering. In my sophomore year, I reached a breaking point. In that moment I realized that my strength was not enough. I could not keep fighting alone... but also, Christ would not leave me when I needed Him most. I gave Him my heart right there, knelt before Him on my carpet floor. I have been following Jesus ever since that night.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I have always had an eye for art, and it has always been my passion. I started painting a drawing very young. Before I found archery and had a lot of my medical work done, I did not have the physical abilities to do many sports. Thus, creativity has always been a default and gift. Art, especially painting, is something that I believe was sewn into the fabric of who I am as a person. I feel like if someone were to look at my D.N.A, they would discover that it is held together by paint brushes and acrylic paint.

Tell us about a favorite art piece you've created.
My favorite is a painting of a landscape I saw on my way home from a college tour that didn’t go how I expected. I hadn’t looked at Carson Newman yet and felt so lost, worried about not knowing where I was supposed to go. I glanced out the window at this beautiful scenery of clouds over a empty field. The sky was lit up with sunset. I snapped a picture and came home. I painted the picture that night. It is a reminder to me that God had a plan even when I felt like I didn’t.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
My mother has been taking pictures of me since birth. She has always had a talent for photography, and I have loved smiling in her photos since I was little. I have always enjoyed seeing the memories she has captured over the years. One of the things I have always loved about the experience is that she knows me so well. It is always nice when the photographer can capture you in a photo, not just what you look like.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My mother nominated me. We have always been close, which is such a blessing! The memories I love most are the ones that remind me of her love for me and just how much. She took care of me during times in my life when I could not always care for myself. Looking back on those seasons, I can remember it being so hard for me to ask for help from anyone. However, I will always cherish the fact that my mother was there to help and support me even when I didn't want or know how to ask for it.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
I think one of my favorites is the day I signed at Carson – Newman and my entire family was grinning from ear to ear, so excited to watch me sign that piece of paper. The hugs I got that day were some of the best, and the pride in all my family's faces is something I will never forget.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I have always believed that God has a plan for me and my story, and this is one way I can share that story. I want to be an encouragement and a source of hope for other people. I have been blessed with so many individuals throughout my life who have been there to encourage and support me. I want to use this opportunity to give hope and encouragement to others who may feel like they face odds that are too big to conquer.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I win a scholarship, I plan to use the money for art supplies and books in college, where I plan to study studio art. I love the idea of doing what I was made to do in college, and this can be a way to help me do that!

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
I thank the Lord for blessing me with the opportunity to have such an interesting story and the courage to share it with others. I am incredibly grateful for His hand in my life. I would also love to thank my family and especially my mother, who have made it their priority to see me get to my goals. I would not have been able to be here without any of them.

Leah Maliszewski

Picture

Leah Maliszewski – Virginia
Nomination by Carrie Maliszewski
Photography by Melissa Waller Photography
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Leah is an inspiring senior. Diagnosed with dyslexia, Leah struggled to learn to read and navigate a traditional school setting. Through tremendous dedication, she earned a 3.8 high school GPA, including an A in AP Literature. Additionally, Leah is a talented field hockey goalie. She earned the distinguished District Goalie of the Year Award for an unprecedented, consecutive 3 years, breaking several records, including Most Career Saves at an impressive 640. She will play Division II hockey and major in Exercise Science. Leah is proof that focus, determination, and a desire to succeed can overcome the toughest of obstacles.

Photography by Melissa Waller Photography

What do you wish others knew about dyslexia?
People think dyslexia is simply a disability that makes it difficult to read or that makes words move around the page and letters flip. However, dyslexia is much more than switching b’s and d’s. Many incredibly smart people have dyslexia including Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Henry Ford and Walt Disney. Each of these successful individuals are incredibly creative and innovative. People with dyslexia just learn differently from the majority of people. We see the world differently. Dyslexics demonstrate incredible creativity and unique ways of thinking. Although it makes traditional learning difficult, it is also a super power.

What did you love most about AP Literature?
The thing I love most about AP Literature is learning everyone's different perspectives. In this class, we do a lot of annotations of excerpts and discussions about them. It's been very interesting to listen to my classmates' interpretations and discover how everyone deciphers the author's underlying themes differently.

What was your favorite class this year and what was the most interesting thing you learned?
My favorite class this year is Anatomy and Physiology. I love this class because I find it super interesting to learn all about how our bodies work and function everyday. The most interesting thing I've learned in this class is about the eye. It sounds strange, but there were so many more parts of the eye than I realized and vision is something most people take for granted. So many things have to work together, which is such a beautiful thing. We even got to dissect a goat's eye at the end of the unit!

Tell us about your field hockey career. When did you get started and where are you at with it now? I started field hockey when I was in 5th grade after taking a break from gymnastics. I played at school and then started playing year round. When I got to high school, I was extremely excited to have made Varsity my first year. Being a freshman on Varsity pushed me to be better everyday and taught me great work ethic. By my junior year, I was visiting colleges to see if I could continue playing in college. I am so grateful to have found Frostburg State University where I will be playing D2 field hockey in the Fall.

What does earning distinguished District Goalie of the Year 3x over mean to you?
Each year, earning this award has meant something different to me. When I was a sophomore, I was so honored to know that the District coaches believed in my ability. The second year, I was honored to know that they recognized how hard I worked to improve. And, this year, I felt honored to continue to be chosen among so many other amazing goalies in our District. Over the years, I have experienced the many ups and downs that come with a high pressure position, but this award has been a major encouragement for me to keep going.

Why does being a goalie suit you?
Initially, my older brother was an ice hockey goalie and I just wanted to follow in his footsteps. Now, being a goalie means much more to me. It takes a certain kind of player to want to be in the line of fire. You have to not only be physically prepared, but also mentally strong. The goalie is the backbone of the team and I take pride in being able to support my team and have their backs. I enjoy the challenges that come with my position.

What has field hockey taught you?
Field hockey has taught me many things including confidence, work ethic, teamwork, and leadership but the greatest is how to be mentally strong. Mental strength is a huge part of playing any sport, but especially for goalies because my mistakes are emphasized on the scoreboard as a point for the opposing team. I have to recover quickly when things don’t go in my favor. I learned to channel those mistakes into what fuels me. This took me many years to learn, and it was not easy, but it has helped me in so many real life situations.

Share your favorite memory with your field hockey team.
My favorite memories are from both of our recent Pink Out games. As a team, we raised money for Breast Cancer Research, which is a cause that is near to my heart because both my Grandmothers had the disease. I played in honor of my mom’s mom, whom I never met. Last year, we beat the best team in our district for the first in 7 years in overtime. This year, we beat another rival team 1-0 in a shootout. The energy on the field and in the stands was electric!

Why did you choose to major in Exercise Science?
I am interested in combining my love of sports and a desire to work in the medical field. My college has an excellent program for this major where I can get real, hands-on experience.

What do you hope to do with your degree?
After college, I plan to study sonography and become an ultrasound tech. I’m hoping my degree will help prepare me for a more focused career in the medical field.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
It’s hard to choose just one dream. Of course, the most important job I aspire to is a wife and mom. As mentioned earlier, I hope to be a medical sonographer someday. I also would love to be a field hockey coach. I have had the pleasure of working with and mentoring many younger goalies over the past few years, to include volunteering at my old school where I discovered my love for the position. I find it very rewarding to watch each player grow in their own unique style and technique.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover
Not many people know this about me but, along with my struggles in the classroom when I was young, I also struggled socially. I was teased and picked on at recess, on the bus, and other social settings. Although this took a big toll on me at the time, I am now very thankful I was able to persevere through these challenging times because not only have I found new confidence because of this, but also as I've grown, it has reminded me how important it is to show kindness to everyone.

What else would you like to talk about?
Despite my initial struggles with reading and writing, poetry has been one of my biggest coping mechanisms as I've gotten older. Poetry is a huge part in how I process big events and emotions as I start new things or face new challenges. When I have a lot going on, I find that the words just flow when I sit down to write. Poetry has been an amazing outlet for me, and I always encourage others to try it out!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Faith is a huge part of who I am and how I've gotten as far as I have. I find that no matter the chaos that may be going on in my life at the time whether that be a stressful moment on the field or just the overwhelming waves of life, my faith is always there to catch me when I fall. I've definitely gone through some dark times and tried all the worldly things to help make me feel better, but the only thing that has worked is prayer. I owe all my success to the Lord.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I found my photographer through a friend who had previously done pictures with her. I'm so glad I joined Melissa’s team. I have absolutely loved every second of it. Melissa really has a way with teens. I've never felt so comfortable in front of the camera before. She is so easy to work with and always has me leaving photo shoots eager to see my pictures.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
It's hard to sum up my mom in just 100 words. My mom is one of my very favorite people. She is so selfless and will do whatever she has to do to see a smile on my face. My Mom has worked incredibly hard to parent me and my siblings while my dad is gone on trips for the military, and she has done an amazing job. Some of my favorite memories have been just simply the moments where we talk and laugh for hours on the couch. Sometimes laughing so hard we cry. I love her so much.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
Our youth needs more realistic role models. It's okay to have faults, it's okay to struggle; it's how you use these things to motivate you that matters. Even more than that, it's who you are that matters. I want to share my story so I can be this kind of role model for little girls and boys just like I was, and show them that you are so much more than whatever you may be struggling with. I want them to be able to embrace who they are and take on the world with confidence and kindness.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I won this scholarship, I would donate half the money to Mary's shelter in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I donated pajamas to the families there for Christmas when I was in 7th grade, and it was such an amazing experience. I would love to be able to help these families out again. With the other half, I would set it aside to save up for college, including sonography school which I plan to attend after my 4 years in college.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Mrs. Roxanne took senior pictures of my cousin and my Shi~sha (aunt) made arrangements for my Quince pre-photo shoot. It was an exciting experience, Mrs. Roxanne gave me great direction, and I didn't feel nervous at all. My favorite part was the young kids who were on a field trip at the planetarium they saw me walking up and started clapping and telling me that I looked like a beautiful Princess “Princess Tiana” Their innocence and excitement were so wholesome.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
Well, that would be my mom. My favorite memory is from when I was in Girl Scouts, about 8 or 9 years old, and we went on a camping trip to Camp Flaming Arrow. All the kids were swinging off a rope into the water, and I was scared but wanted to do it. She told me it was okay to feel scared; it was a big jump, and no one would look at me differently if I didn't jump. She reassured me that people from the troop would be in the water watching over us. So, I did it, and it was the most thrilling moment I had experienced. She has always encouraged me to try new things.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I think it would be an amazing experience to share all the possibilities one has with other teens to never stop believing in yourself.

Tell us about your viola and your love for playing it.
My love for viola started when I saw my cousin playing her violin. she inspired my love for orchestra and my love for orchestral music. I started playing the viola in sixth grade and continued to play it since then. I choose to play the viola because it was different and not many people, I've met have played it or wanted to play it.

Tell us about your dedication to the performing arts and what you love most about participating.
I have strong dedication to the performing arts and plan to continue doing it in my future. Something I love most about participating in performing arts is the spotlight and the loud happy crowds cheering while I'm performing, whether that be when I'm on the football field or doing my winter guard shows indoors.

What is a favorite memory in the performing arts?
My favorite memory would have to be when I was performing at the football games for my school and dancing in the stands to the cool band music with all my friends.

Avery Hobbs – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Avery Hobbs is an inspiration for many reasons but the one that shines the most is her willingness to set a goal and put in the work to achieve that goal. Avery wants to be an elementary school teacher and she has worked tirelessly to achieve this goal. She interviewed for and was accepted into a program at her school where she teaches preschool students 3 days a week, then goes 4 afternoons a week to student teach in a first-grade classroom. She was recently accepted to Stephan F. Austin, her school of choice because of their teaching program. All of these accomplishments are due to her hard work and dedication. This is just one example that makes Avery an inspiring teen!
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I would like to become an elementary school teacher and the reason I would like to be an elementary school teacher is to make a difference in children’s lives. I’d like to be the kind of a teacher that makes kids feel loved and cared for because every kid deserves someone to make them feel special.

What do you enjoy doing with the preschool children you work with?
I love starting my mornings with my preschoolers, dancing and being silly during circle time, and keeping the fun going all day with more dances that make them giggle and move. I also love planning exciting science and art activities making sure each lesson is filled with creativity, curiosity, and pure joy!

What are your favorite activities you do with the children when you student teach?
I don’t get to spend as much time with my first-graders as I’d like, but I love working with my small groups during intervention time, making lessons fun and building strong connections with my students. Seeing their progress and knowing that something I taught them helped them succeed makes me so happy and proud!

What interests you about being an elementary school teacher?
I want to be an elementary school teacher because I want to make a meaningful impact in my students’ lives, giving them a safe and supportive place to learn and grow. You never know what a child is going through at home, and if I can be the one person they trust and look up to, then I know I’m making a difference where it matters the most.

What are you most excited to learn at college?
I’m excited to learn how to be successful in my future career and navigate adulthood with confidence. Entering adulthood makes me nervous, but I believe college will help me gain the skills I need to provide for myself and build a successful life after graduation!

What do you envision your life like as an elementary school teacher?
I envision myself as the type of elementary school teacher that students can turn to whenever they need support, whether it’s for their education or personal struggles. My classroom will be a cute and cozy space where students feel safe and comfortable, and I’ll be the teacher they run to with excitement when they achieve their goals and accomplish great things in life!

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
If my dream job were offered to me today, I would be an elementary school teacher without hesitation. I used to say I’d never be one, but looking back at how I loved playing teacher with my stuffed animals when I was a little girl and how I’ve found love and success in teaching children today, I know it’s the career I’m meant for.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could definitely talk about working and supporting younger children through education. Being in the practicum in early learning program at my school has completely made me the person I am today just from getting to make a difference in a child’s life almost everyday. I love the kids that I teach to death and come home everyday talking about them for hours.

What else would you like to talk about?
Something I love to do in my free time is volunteer at animal shelters or even donate items to shelters in need. I love animals I have 2 rescue dogs myself as well as a rescue bunny and I wish I could give every type of animal a home. I also enjoy getting out on the court and playing volleyball it’s one of my favorite things to just hit volleyballs left and right across the court. I played club volleyball for 4 years and also played beach volleyball for 1 year.

What are your roles and responsibilities volunteering at the animal shelter?
When I volunteer at an animal shelter, I make sure the dogs have clean, cozy cages with soft blankets and beds so they can sleep comfortably at night. I also love spending time with them during their outside playtime, giving them the love and attention they deserve!

What do you wish others knew about volunteering?
I wish more people knew how much volunteering at shelters help animals in need, giving them the love and care they don’t always get. These dogs may not have a home yet, but when volunteers spend time with them, it brightens their day and makes a world of difference in their lives.

Tell us about your volleyball career.
I started my volleyball career at about 11 years old in developmental leagues and worked my way up to club volleyball by 13, playing indoor until I was 16 before switching to a travel beach volleyball team at 17. Although I’ve decided to step away from competitive volleyball this year, I still love the sport and enjoy playing just for fun.

What is your volleyball team like and what is a favorite memory with them?
If I had to choose a favorite volleyball team I have been on it would be my travel beach volleyball team for Third Coast. I got to participate in out of state tournaments and ended my volleyball career with a tournament in California placing 3rd where I got to receive a bronze metal and I think that was a nice way to part ways with my volleyball career.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
My photographer Angie actually lives around the corner from us. My experience has definitely been so surreal Angie makes me feel like a real model during every photoshoot we do. I love how caring and kind hearted Angie is and how comfortable she makes me feel during every photoshoot. I’d recommend her to so many people!

Are you a part of a model team with your photographer, and if so, tell us about it.
I am apart of a model team with my photographer, and I absolutely love the fun shoots she plans for us girls to do. Being part of this team has been such a great addition to my senior year, and I’m so grateful for the experience!

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory was when Angie worked with a local boutique to get us beautiful dresses for a photoshoot to make us all feel special. I definitely felt like a princess in my gown and I’m glad she coordinated something like that for us.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I really hope I could inspire other teenage girls to achieve their goals!

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
I would use the money to further my education towards my teaching degree.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
I would like to thank my mom and dad for helping me get where I am today; their unwavering support through everything in life means the world to me. I can’t remember a single moment when they weren’t there for me, and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done.

Photography by Krystal Klear Photography

What have you loved most about your senior year?
I have enjoyed being able to get a “taste of the real world” by working as a CNA. It has been a great opportunity to prepare me for the prerequisites in nursing. I see myself as an important part of the healthcare team. I aim to do my job well and always with a smile! I enjoy knowing that I can make a positive impact and help someone when they need it the most.

What led you to pursuing a career as a registered nurse?
I plan to become a registered nurse as a first step toward a career as a certified nurse anesthetist. My mother works in the healthcare field and I have observed her compassion, dedication and work-ethic on a daily basis. This sparked my desire to become a nurse. I have also had the opportunity to travel abroad, and I have observed many global healthcare needs. Becoming an international travel nurse would allow me to mix my love for healthcare with a sense of adventure. It seems like a perfect fit for me!

How have you been able to balance both high school with such a high GPA and obtaining your CNA license?
I have always taken pride in prioritizing my grades and staying organized seems to be the key to balancing work and school. I like to plan ahead, keep schedules and organize notes. My older sister always had great advice for using strategies to “work smarter, not harder”.

What did you learn while obtaining your CNA license that surprised you the most?
I was definitely surprised by how physically demanding the job is! I canceled my gym membership after the first week.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
International travel nurse to an underdeveloped country

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My love of travel has also been an inspiration in shaping my future career plans. I have been fortunate to travel abroad and I have visited eleven countries. It has been an eye-opening experience to see other areas of the world and the struggles and needs that they face. Nurses serve the world and help to improve the quality of life for all. I hope to make a significant impact on the lives of others and I have no doubt that it will be a rewarding career!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about traveling! I feel that it has helped me build essential life skills and confidence in my ability to solve unique problems. It has helped me to develop cultural knowledge and enhanced my communication skills. Navigating new cities has tried my patience, but helped me practice strategic thinking in real-life situations. I can definitely say that my confidence grows with each journey and my ability to adapt in unfamiliar or unpredictable circumstances. These will all be valuable tools in the nursing field.

Where has been your favorite place to travel to and why?
One of my favorite places was France! I enjoyed seeing so many well-known landmarks and experiencing the culture with my family. My grandmother was a history teacher and had many fun facts to share with me. The Palace of Versailles was one of my favorite experiences.

Where do you hope to go next and what do you plan to do there?
I would love to visit Japan! I look forward to trying new foods and exploring the temples and shrines. It would also be exciting to ride the bullet train and see Mount Fuji.

What is a travel experience you will never forget?
My family traveled to Greece and rented a TINY car during our stay. We drove into some deep sand and the car became stuck. We all worked together to push the car out, and I am not sure if we almost passed out from physical exertion or from laughter! I don’t think any of us will ever forget that moment.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would also like to mention that my Christian faith has been instrumental in shaping my core values. I have a strong desire to help others and have been able to assist with community needs through my church youth group. I have volunteered at Need Line and packed meals for those less fortunate in the community. I have also assisted in making bunk beds and packing flood buckets. Being a member of my church youth group has allowed me to serve those in need in my own community.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Krystal Klear Photography was a “no-brainer” when it came to scheduling my senior photos. My older siblings used Krystal and I was excited to see what unique ideas she would have for me! She tailors the photos to each individual and their particular interests. She also allowed me to use my own creativity and ideas. I am a pretty quiet and shy person, but she made me feel comfortable and confident. This really helped show my true personality in the photos!

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory of my session with Krystal was going out to the airplane hangar and seeing how she turned a bland canvas into some magical moments! We had a pretty great sunset to work with that day too!

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I would love to have a platform to share my career goals and how they developed over the years!

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
I plan to attend Western Kentucky University in the Fall of 2025, and major in Nursing.

What are you most excited about attending Western Kentucky University for?
I am planning to room with one of my best friends who is also majoring in Nursing. I also look forward to seeing my older brother on campus!

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
My older sister, Abby, has been a huge role model for me. She has helped me learn from my mistakes and also celebrates each success. Her practical advice and guidance has been beneficial in many areas of my life. I have watched her achieve big goals, overcome obstacles and persevere through challenges. Seeing someone so close to me achieve great things makes those achievements seem attainable for me. She has led by example with hard work, resilience, kindness and integrity. She continues to motivate me to aim higher in everything I do!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I plan to further my education as a certified nurse anesthetist.

What are three items on your travel bucket list?
Japan, New Zealand and Italy

Lauren Keyes – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLIE ANN
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lauren Keyes is beautiful both inside and out! She is a Senior at South Knox High School, and she holds leaderships roles in all of the following school clubs; Interact Club, Foreign Language Club, BPA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council, National Honor Society, and FFA. She also participates in many community service projects within her county. Traveling is one of her favorite things to do, and she recently had the opportunity to go to Italy on a school trip. After graduation she plans to go to Butler University and major in Criminology and Psychology. Lauren’s truly an Inspiring Teen!

Photography by PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLIE ANN

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
As an aspiring leader, I act as a volunteer in many projects within my community but also within my school. I have tutored younger children who needed the extra help as well as being a leader for the middle school student council. Not only do I take action as a volunteer, I also take action within the classroom. Throughout my high school years I have stood first in my class all four years. I have excelled in advanced classes and ended this year as a part of the top ten academic teenagers in my county.

What else would you like to talk about?
A topic that I did not discuss during my nomination is my love for showing animals. I used to show horses all across the country when I was twelve to sixteen. While I don’t show across the country anymore I still show locally. At one point during my time showing I ended the year as one of the top five youth in the nation. Four years ago I learned how to show and care for sheep as well. I have shown sheep at my county fair every year since and have also taken home a winning banner every year.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
A topic that I feel incredibly passionate about is the stigma around mental health treatment in the justice system. I believe there are unstable individuals who are deemed as "criminals" and are not getting help. While I am not justifying their crime in any way, these individuals need treatment for the illness they have inside their mind. A certain amount of these people are taken over by their mind and cannot comprehend or explain the actions they have committed. If extensive mental health treatment were required we could have the chance to create assets to society instead of liabilities.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I found my photographer through Instagram! She had done my older cousin's senior pictures the year before so I was looking at those on her page. I realized how much I liked the pictures and soon started looking at more. My experience with Leslie has been nothing short of amazing! She has always been down to make my ideas come true. Leslie has always gone above and beyond with communicating with me and making me feel like the best version of myself. I love her outgoing personality and her dedication to her clients.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
I was nominated by my wonderful photographer. My favorite memory with Leslie is our group session at a park in Indiana. The reason for the selection of this park was for a few gorgeous waterfalls that it offered. During this shoot, most of us team members were wearing dresses. All of us, including Leslie, had to do something close to parkour to make our way across the rocks into the waterfall. Leslie stood in the pond area below the waterfall, up to her waist, for close to three hours taking pictures of us. It was such a fun day!

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
My purpose for wanting to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine is to do just that: inspire. I want to be able to share my story and continue to be a leader to younger teenagers out there. If I can inspire just one person to be their best self, then I have fulfilled my purpose. There is so much negativity existing in the world of teenagers and I want to be proof that there is so much more that they are worthy of. If I were to be a part of Inspiring Teens Magazine I could help make a change.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I were to win a scholarship, I would put the money towards costs for my college education. After graduation this year I plan to attend Butler University to study Criminology and Psychology. With this scholarship money, that education would become more affordable and more available to me. After I complete undergraduate school I plan to obtain my Masters degree and this scholarship money could help me achieve my goal of getting that degree.

What do you love most about being a senior this year?
What I love most about being a senior this year is relishing the time that I get to spend with my friends. Especially this year my friends and I have made it a priority to spend as much time as possible together because we know we will all be going our separate ways soon. It is very bittersweet but also has brought us so much closer as individuals.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I hope to leave a legacy behind that inspires someone to be kind. I have tried my best to be a person who looks for the best in every situation and person and I do so without judgement. No one ever knows what another person is going through so there is always room to be kind. It is my hope that I have been proof of kindness and inspire others to do the same.

Tell us about your leadership opportunities in the Interact Club.
In my school's Interact Club I currently serve as the Vice President! While in this role I have had the opportunity to help organize and lead different events that we have done within our community. One event that I was a part of was a Bowl for Polio event! This money we raised was used to help those with the rare polio disease.

How are you involved in the student council and what project are you most proud of?
In the student council I sat on the executive council until this year in which I stepped down because of my involvement in other clubs. This year I am a member but still very involved. The project I am most proud of is getting our student council involved in a local nursing home. I solely got the student council set up with this nursing home and it is great to put a smile on the residents faces.

What service project in the National Honor Society was the nearest to your heart and why?
The service project nearest to my heart was ringing bells during the Christmas time for the Salvation Army. I love Christmas time in general but getting to go out and spread cheer for a good cause at different places within our city was so much fun. I got to meet and talk to a lot of new people and make new friends!

How did you shine as a leader in FFA?
I have participated in many different contests, all of which have gone onto compete in the state levels. I served as the secretary of the chapter for four years and the student advisor for one year. I had to give speeches and demonstrations countless times and to a wide variety of different audiences. I coordinated events with local businesses as well as helped mentor younger members along the way.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I believe that my leadership style is more hands-on. If there is an unorganized situation I will immediately take control and begin delegating. I can easily talk to a large group of people so I use that to my advantage quite often. Typically, I am the person people come to if they have questions and I am always happy to help.

What memory of Italy will you never forget?
A memory of Italy that I will never forget was taking a boat tour around the island of Capri. It simply was so beautiful that it felt unreal. The entire ride I was just astounded by the beauty of this island and the ocean around it because I had never seen anything like it before!

What made you choose Psychology as a major?
I chose Psychology as a major because I have always been fascinated by what makes individuals do what they do. I also have a history with the effects of mental health so I wanted to learn more about that! If I could help anyone deal with a mental illness or give them hope I would do whatever I could.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
My dream job would be a criminal psychologist! I would preferably want to be in the FBI because go big or go home obviously! As a criminal psychologist I would want to interview the more violent criminals such as serial killers, murderers, and others to see inside their minds.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Three things on my bucket list are traveling to all seven continents (yes even Antarctica), becoming fluent in another language, and to live in a big city at least one time.

Look for Lauren in issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!

Carleigh Lipscomb

2/5/2025

Picture

Carleigh Lipscomb – Alabama
Nomination by Jessica Brown
Photography by Monica Dooley
Issue 88 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Carleigh’s relentless drive to achieve excellence inspires everyone around her. As the SGA Executive President at her school, she also takes on leadership roles beyond campus, including participating in ALA Alabama Girls State and the Huntingdon Economic Development Program. Carleigh thrives on connecting with students statewide, forging relationships that extend beyond her immediate circle. Outside of her schoolwork, she dedicates her spring to paging for the Alabama House of Representatives in Montgomery. In her spare time, she’s deeply involved in her church, mentoring students and serving on the worship team at The Church of the Highlands.
Photography by Monica Dooley

What is SGA and why is it important to you?
SGA stands for Student Government Association, a student-run body that represents the interests of students within a school or university. In SGA our main goal is to be a bridge between the students and the adults. We hope to represent the school in a way that builds our image and encourages future leaders to strive for the same. SGA is important to me because it gives a voice to the students who may not be heard otherwise. Through SGA I see positive changes made and an impact on education and social life.

What is ALA Alabama Girls State and how has it shaped you as a leader?
ALA Alabama Girls State is a prestigious leadership program that simulates state government, teaching girls about civic responsibility, government structure, and leadership. Throughout the week, we ran for office, drafted and debated bills, and worked in various government roles. I was proud to pass a financial literacy bill, one of only five during the week. This experience taught me how to be an effective leader—someone who inspires others, learns from mistakes, and constantly seeks personal growth. It showed me the importance of leadership that empowers, listens, and strives to make a positive impact.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
Through my leadership experience, I’ve found that I enjoy listening to others and making a positive impact in any environment I’m in. I use my confidence to navigate these situations and approach the things I’m passionate about with a sense of urgency. Additionally, I consider myself a strong mediator. I’m able to remain unbiased and always look for both the positives and negatives in any situation, ensuring I understand all perspectives before making decisions.

What have you learned about the Alabama House of Representatives in Montgomery through paging?
Through learning about how my state functions and the moving pieces within it, I have also gotten to know the individual leaders that make up our legislation. From congress members and senators to secretaries, lobbyists, and many others, I’ve come to realize that they are far from the negative portrayals in the media. These are compassionate, kind, and selfless people who dedicate themselves to serving others. This has deepened my appreciation for the sacrifices made by leaders at both the state and national levels. I hope to follow their example and one day serve my state in the same way.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
When I tell people that I am interested in politics and how our government works most people ask why? I assume it is because most young people are not interested in the inner workings of our government and what those leaders are doing to better it. What interests me most is the decisions those people make and the process it takes to step into office. I enjoy educating myself on state and federal matters alike and hope to one day use that interest and knowledge to shape me into a better leader.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
If I had the opportunity to have any job in the world, I would without a doubt choose to be the White House Press Secretary. The chance to learn about my country, understand the policies of the sitting president, and speak on behalf of those individuals would be the utmost honor. The influence of this position depends entirely on the dedication and effort put in by the person holding it. In my case, I would work tirelessly to improve the country’s image and address any questions about the events and issues affecting the nation.

What do you love most about your church?
Without a doubt, I love the people. They've played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Every time I'm with them, I learn more about myself and how to become a better person. They offer unwavering support and would drop everything to help me if I needed it. I've met some of my closest friends and most valuable mentors there. My church feels like family, and I truly couldn’t ask for anything more from them.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Many people don’t know that I was introduced to music at a very young age. I’ve had the chance to learn several instruments, including the violin, oboe, and drums—experiences I’ll always cherish. One of my proudest accomplishments has been playing drums at church, where I’ve received positive feedback, particularly from young girls in and around the church. Despite a busy schedule, I’ve maintained a 4.0 GPA while representing my school throughout my high school years. I hope my story inspires young adults to realize that with hard work and determination, it’s possible to excel both academically and in extracurriculars.

What else would you like to talk about?
Although this nomination covers some of the extracurricular things that I am involved in, it does not include all of the young girls I have mentored through working at an Elementary school’s after school program, leading a 10th grade girls small group at church, and volunteering in the kids department at church. One of my main goals is to continue inspiring young people to pursue whatever dreams they have. I’ve had the privilege of speaking at both church and ALA Alabama Girls State, where I aimed to encourage those in the audience to always strive for success.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
After Monica Dooley captured my brother’s senior portraits, and seeing the work she did for him, I knew that three years later, I’d want her to do the same for me. We took photos all around a small town in Alabama, stopping at places like a cemetery, a spot called “Africa,” and her aunt's charming southern home. There were several wardrobe changes, and her assistant did my hair and makeup before the session. I’ll never forget the moment when I looked at the camera after the first stop and just knew the photos were going to turn out incredible.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
Jessica Brown has been a lifelong family friend of ours, however, last year I had the honor to be selected into a group called Student Leadership with the Etowah Chamber of Commerce. As the director of this program, I got to see her in a new light as she helped guide my fellow students. There, we had the opportunity to grow closer through learning about my community and the many jobs we offer here. We shared many laughs, especially when I pitched my idea for a Shark Tank assignment, along with many other memorable experiences throughout the year.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
The best way to inspire others is by sharing your journey and platform with them. I aspire to become one of the few women with a career in both corporate business and politics. Being featured in the Inspiring Teens magazine will serve as a reminder of all I’ve accomplished early in my career. As I prepare for college, this opportunity would be a great way to put myself out there and kickstart a journey that I hope will continue for years to come.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
In an effort to ease the financial burden on my parents, I’ve worked hard to secure scholarships to cover as much of my college costs as possible. This particular scholarship would help cover my housing expenses, as I plan to live in the dorms at my intended college.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me fishing for half the day and hunting for the other half.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
My next step is college! I cannot wait to meet new people and build lifelong relationships with people who have similar interests to mine.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t be scared to put yourself out there. You critique yourself more than anyone else does so don't forget to take a deep breath once in a while.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Hopefully by then I will be either graduated or completing my masters degree. I hope at that point I will have a job lined up immediately upon graduation.

3 Things on your bucket list
Visit all 50 states, be elected to some sort of leadership office, visit Washington D.C.
