BluMoon Photography - Janet Roberson
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Shelby Carter is an outstanding young lady who has inner beauty as well as outer beauty. She has an outgoing spirit and works hard to keep her GPA high. She loves tennis, her friends and most importantly her family. Shelby received her CNA license her junior year of high school. She will graduate high school in 2021 with an associates degree and plans to pursue a career in the medical field.

What exciting plans do you have for your future, and what inspired you to pursue a career in the medical field?
My plans for the future are to go straight to college after highschool and start the nursing program. I plan to become an ear, nose, and throat doctor. I was inspired to pursue a career because I was always around my grandmother who is a Nurse Practitioner. I have been around medicine since a very young age and have always planned to be some sort of doctor.

Tell me about you receiving a CNA license your junior year of high school, and what your academics and extracurriculars mean to you.
I was extremely eager to complete my CNA certification as early in high school as possible. You have to take 3 classes and then complete clinicals and the state board exam in order to receive your certification. My academics and extracurricular are very important to me. I have always been one to love school and excel in it with ease. I started playing tennis in 6th grade and fell in love so I have been playing ever since.

How have you managed a full time job, school, playing tennis, and still having time to spend with your friends and family?
My schedule is all over the place I work night shift at our nursing home so when I get home I can spend time with family. I have to make plans to spend time with friends just whenever I am not working or with family. Our tennis coach has 2 separate practice sessions one at 5:30 in the morning for the kids who work so I always attended that practice and just had to take off on game days.

Who has inspired you in your life and helped you become the person you are today?
My grandparents have had a big impact on my life. I stayed with them for the majority of my younger years by choice. I love my grandparents with all my heart and they have done nothing but support me in all of my choices in life. They have shown me what is it like to have a good career and still be able to attain a healthy relationship with each other. I want to be able to have a successful career and start a family of my own one day and they have shown me the proper way to plan out my life.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in also, and how are you also active in your church?
I am involved in lots of school clubs and sport teams. I am currently in HOSA, FCCLA, BETA, and student council. All of these clubs require good leadership skills and a drive to help others. I am active in my church through my youth group. We go take a mission trip once a year and go to 3 conferences. I was planning to go on a trip to Puerto Rico in October but due to COVID-19 that trip was cancelled. We do lots of helping on the trips such as helping to build the local children, witnessing to people in the city and praying with them as well.

What piece of advice would you give to help inspire others through all that you are involved in in your community?
A piece of advice I would give other people is to never take anything for granted. You can spread awareness to any situation you want if you try hard enough and have a good team to help you do it. Do not judge others because you do not know their history and you do not know your future. Anything can go wrong at any second.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to give to someone who wants to be where I am today is to never give up on your goals. I never imagined being able to graduate with a college degree and a high school diploma all while working full time and playing sports. It is very hard but you have to have the right motivation in order to achieve your goals. Keep a positive mindset through all of the hard times in your life and never let situations get you down.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished has to be being able to graduate with my associates degree as well as my high school diploma. I done this by replacing as many of my high school classes with college courses to take place of them. I have taken extra classes most semesters and summer classes every year to get ahead.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years I see myself being close to finishing school. I also see myself trying to start a family around this time. In my opinion you should never think too hard about the future because you aren’t promised tomorrow so live everyday to the fullest.

3 Things on your bucket list: Skydiving, bungee jumping, travel the world

Who do you find inspiring?
A person that I find inspiring in the media is Amy Schumer. She uses her comedic attitude to bring attention to rape culture in America. She stands up for other women that have been through situations similar to hers and helps get them through hard times in their life through her comedy.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel like there is no right answer to this question because no one knows how you truly inspire others. I do believe that my drive for success in life has pushed more people in my life to try to achieve higher goals. My relationship with god is strong built and he helps to give me the words to say when I am speechless. My friends have always come to me for advice because they know I will try to help them in the best way I can.

When did you find your passion for music? Are there any musicians you look up to?

It was not until my sixth grade year that I truly turned my attention towards performing arts. I was never interested in electives such as visual arts or culinary arts. Therefore, I enrolled in band. I auditioned for instruments such as the saxophone and percussion. Though they simply did not feel right. Losing a bit of hope, I tried the trumpet. After letting out a strong “buzz” I was told almost instantly that I was a trumpet. I was lucky to be taught by many musicians, Mr. Bobby Joe De Leon Jr. is someone I will always look up to.

What is it like getting to mentor your peers in music and being someone they look up to?
I have been mentoring for three years and created solid relationships. It is very rewarding to be mentoring my peers through music, owing to the fact that seeing how they accepted my help advanced their technique and performance etiquette. To know that I was their guide towards success makes me feel good. There were many gratifying moments that boosted my confidence in continuing my mentor position. Many made it to All-Region and gained a superior rating on their solo’s. Catching sight of how much my section members developed from the beginning of the season to the end was beyond fulfilling.

Tell me more about the Mariachi club you started and what it is like being a part of the San Antonio Mariachi Academy!
When I joined San Antonio Mariachi Academy I was very nervous. Although, I was welcomed right away by the individuals of this organization. Being in this friendly environment strengthened my qualities of discipline, accountability, and teamwork. Giving me the inspiration of establishing a club my junior year. After successfully finding enough interested members, “Los Halcones de Harlan” came to be. The club consists of members of the band program, orchestra program, and other individuals who know how to play stringed instruments. This club is intended for individuals to have the opportunity to learn a different type of musical culture and literature.

Tell me more about your culture! What do you love so much about it and what are some traditions you have?
I love everything about my Mexican culture. From our music, parties and dancing- to our family, clothing and food. From a young age I was taught to adore my culture and all that it has to offer. I spent my youth attending celebrations such as quinceañeras and since I excelled in my academic studies I had the opportunity to have one of my own! One of my yearly traditions is to travel to Mexico, I’ve traveled to many of its states. My fondest memory was when I traveled to Guadalajara, Jalisco; home of the mariachis, to sing with professional mariachis.

What are some goals you have for your future? Do you want to continue playing music and maybe play professionally?
There are many goals I have for my future. To name some; I want to become the first college graduate in my family, to have a degree in music, and to become a doctor. Music will always be my passion and I want to continue playing it, I dream of having the opportunity to someday play professionally.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was taking the stage in Mariachi Region. I was challenged by getting on stage in front of a huge crowd and singing a song that I learned in less than twenty four hours! Although I was anxious I knew that the show had to go on.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up and always get back up after you have failed. Never take no for an answer.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I see myself in medical school pursuing a doctoral degree in medicine.

Picture

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
My key to organization is prioritizing the things I find most important and not procrastinate.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list include traveling the world, going skydiving, and taking a hot air balloon ride.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents very inspiring because no matter what life throws at them, they find a way to get to the positive side of things.

What inspired your passion for helping others, and what advice would you give to teens to encourage them to know their worth?
I honestly think I was just born with the desire to help others. It is a gift I was blessed with. I would say do not look to other people to feel pretty, smart, or anything else. Their opinions do not define you.

How have you persevered through the hardships you’ve faced in your life, and how have they made you stronger?
Choosing to learn from every single hardship and grow from it has helped me a lot. My mindset is, "It will either make or break you", so choosing to grow from it is always my go-to.

Picture
Photography by Caitlin Whorton Photography

Tell me a little bit about your passion for traveling and one place you would like to travel to in the future and why.
There are so many places I've never seen and people I've never met and that excites me. I want to see every unique place and fall in love with it. I would like to go to Turks and Caicos for my senior trip. It is so beautiful there.

In what ways can you use your platform to spread positivity to others?
I can post encouraging affirmations and reminders, and offer to be there for anyone who needs to vent or receive advice.

What do you love most about photography and modeling?
I love the feeling I get while modeling. I feel confident and like I can do anything I put my mind to. Photography is beautiful because it captures a memory right then and there.

Picture
Photography by Caitlin Whorton Photography

How can you inspire others to be themselves through any insecurities they may have?
I think just knowing everyone is different and unique in their own way is inspiring. No one is the same, so embracing your insecurities is beautiful.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't try to be anyone except yourself. Chase after your own goals and passions, and don't spend your life trying to please everyone else.
Picture

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Other people becoming stronger after going through a hardship is so inspiring because it reminds me how capable we all are. I think I am inspiring because I have gotten myself through the toughest times, and I have come out kinder than before.

3 things on your bucket list.
1. Travel the world
2. Make more bonds and friendships that I will have for life
3. Be content with my life

What was it like being diagnosed with a rare disorder like SMAS, and how have you been able to persevere through all the challenges it comes with?
It was very scary and unsettling when I was diagnosed. My view is that you just have to keep looking forward and do everything you can to keep your mental state positive. Don’t let the situation define you, let you actions do that.

How has your hard work and positive outlook lead you to strive to excel in your academics despite having SMA?
Getting through it makes you stronger. It helped me realize that I can do anything if I keep a positive outlook and keep pushing on. Anything is possible!

Tell me a little bit about how you are actively involved in helping your community and school through helping others.
I serve at our church, through Boy Scouts and when the need is there I am l always available to help others. At first I helped because it was what was part of the program but now I understand the impact to those in our community and I serve because it is uplifting for me and those that we help.

What has it been like running multiple half marathons to raise awareness for the Lupus foundation, and how has it also impacted you helping your mom who has Lupus?
I enjoy the running so that’s great but running for a cause has helped make the events even more meaningful. I find it amazing that we can raise the money and help get others in the community involved in the marathon and in Lupus education. Running with my Mom helps me see how strong she is and it inspires me to push forward and keep a positive outlook

What has been a favorite memory you have made in school or sports so far?
Finding my talent in track and being recognized by JJ Watt in 2019 at his Charity Classic as his dream big work hard student athlete winner.

What advice would you give to teens to inspire them through the kindness you show to others, along with how far you’ve come through your journey by being a positive impact in people’s lives?
My advice is, don’t worry about the end result. Focus on putting in the hard work with all of your effort and you will reach your goals. You have to work for the things you want. Stay positive and have fun along the way.

Picture
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Set your goals, don’t hold on to the past and keep pushing forward but you don't want to be like me you want to be better!

In college, working hard on becoming an engineer and hopefully finding a work internship. God willing healthy and still doing well.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

3 Things on your bucket list.
Catch a tarpon, go to Fiji, and own a ranch

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

Andrew Lewis

Picture

Andrew Lewis - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Ashley Bulanek
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Andrew Lewis is unlike any middle school student I have ever had the privilege of teaching. Andrew is smart, funny and kind. He has a heart of gold and would do anything in his power to help anyone out. Andrew is a honor roll student athlete, Boy Scout, school band member, and uil contestant. While his plate is full, he still will help babysit his younger brother, workout with his older brother and help numerous family members with any task or chore. It has been an honor teaching such a wonderful teen.
Picture
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography

Your nomination mentioned you are an athlete, what sports do you play and what inspired you to start them?
I play Basketball and Baseball- it gives me an outlet from school, family, and the daily activities. I can always play when there is nothing else to do. I love to play ball with my friends and I find it easier to connect with people when we are shooting hoops.

How long have you been a Boy Scout and what is your favorite memory from being one?
I have been in scouts since the first grade. My favorite memory was the camping trip we took last summer. I had the opportunity to take an emergency prep class. It was awesome! I want to be able to help people and I learned so much in that class and at camp that will help me in times of need.

What does being a Uil contestant mean? Tell me more about this!
The UIL competition is a school skills challenge. I competed in the mathematics category and received first place out of all the schools that competed in my area. My dad did too when he was in high school (I am in middle school). He is an engineer and I kind of want to be an engineer too. I enjoy the competition plus it is another opportunity to hang out with my friends.

Picture
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography

How do you balance all of the activities you have going on in your life on top of being an honor roll student?
I believe that you have to work hard to play hard. So I put a lot of effort to knock out my work and get things done so that I can take advantage of hanging out with friends and family.

How has the pandemic impacted your activities that you do and how have you pushed through the change?
I use the extra time to practice more so that when I get the opportunity to be with my team mates and friends again, I will be able to make the most of the time. I have also spent more time online with friends. It’s not the same but it is better than nothing.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I ran the Houston chevron half marathon with my dad and brother this past January. We raised money for the lupus foundation on behalf of my mom who has lupus. I was ready to quit 2 miles in but my dad helped me focus on short interval goals and the reason for doing the race (my mom). All of a sudden we were at mile marker 12 and I knew we could get through it. It was very tough but glad we did it. It taught me more than just finishing a race.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today? Be yourself. Grow out your hair and live YOUR life. Be kind and respect and help others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
That will be my senior year in HS. Getting ready for college, making the most of my time with my friends, and finishing out in at least the top 5 graduates of my class.

Picture
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I enjoy writing my own lyrics and I love listening to new music.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? Making music

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Know my priorities and stick to a plan.

3 Things on your bucket list.
Get into a good college. Play in a music concert (not school related). Learn to drive a real motorcycle

Who do you find inspiring? My dad

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I just focus on being a good person and the best son and friend that I can be. I find those around me to be inspiring.

Nomination by Amy Harris
Photography by April Henry Photography LLC
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Hayley Harris only started dancing seriously three years ago. In that short time, she has gone from barely being able to do a cartwheel, to executing flawless back tucks, pirouettes, and many other advanced skills. She works tirelessly to pursue her passion for dance and takes every opportunity to make improvements to her craft. Hayley inspires many young dancers at her studio with her kind heart and genuine encouragement. She assists with the younger girls' classes and will joyfully tell you that her greatest achievement has been assisting a very special dainty dancer to brave the recital and perform for her family.

I was awarded the evolving artist ballet scholarship at the Velocity Dance Convention.

Tumbling in my backyard or on the beach, working on skills on the trampoline, basically dancing!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I have some artistic abilities- drawing and painting were my passion before I discovered dance.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I use a planner to track my homework, my dance schedule, and things that are due. My mom also helps me stay on track.

Who do you find inspiring?
My dance teachers Kacie Lovelace and Maria Hane, and Misty Copeland. My teachers are so passionate about dance and their students. I aspire to be as patient and loving as they are! Misty started dance late like me- she’s accomplished so much!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I’m inspiring to others because of how hard I work. I wouldn’t say that dance comes naturally to me, I work very hard at it. I try encouraging others and be a good role model and team player.

Makaylee Richmond - Missouri
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Mendy Richmond
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Makaylee Richmond is so Inspiring to me because she has a heart of gold and never gives up no matter what challenges life throws at her. Makaylee last September ended up with her 3rd concussion during cheerleading. She suffered from memory loss, Pseudobulbar affect, migraine headaches, and severe anxiety due to the damage of multiple concussions. I see her push herself to gain her life back, never give up and thankfully due to her hard work and determination she is no longer having to take her multiple daily meditations, memory is almost back to normal and she is regaining her normal life. It has been a long and bumpy road, but her spirit couldn’t ever be broken!

Madison Bauman - Pennsylvania
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Brandon Bauman
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
Photography by Madison Bauman,
Koda Barrett (top) & Emily Riano (bottom)

The Nomination: Madison Bauman is very inspiring. Not only to me but to many teens out there. Not only is she a dancer but she is also a photographer. Madison sets goals and achieves them. She is a very determined woman. I as her older brother am so proud to be watching her grow before my very own eyes and succeed. She also sets trends and never follows them. She’s a leader not a follower. I’m thankful to be her brother.

How did you get started dancing? What do you like so much about it?
My mom took me for my first ballet class when I was only 3 years old at Showbiz Kidz and I loved it. Being that I was super young, I never took my dancing serious until I was 12 years old.
I joined my first competition team and I loved it!
I experienced many new forms of dancing and a new environment. Continuing with my passion I decided to take a break from my competition team and take my ballet lessons to the next level.
I enrolled at the Mill Ballet School in New Jersey and took my very first Pointe class and fell in love.
After that I wanted to become a professional ballerina.
Sadly The Mill Ballet School was a far commute, so I switched over to The Ballet Guild of Lehigh Valley for 2 years.
For my senior year in high school, I decided that I wanted to continue my dance career back at Showbiz Kidz on their competition team.
Sadly I never had the opportunity to perform any of my competition dances or my solo because of Covid-19.
In August of 2020 I will be furthering my dance career at Indiana University Of Pennsylvania. Where I will be majoring in dance.
What I love about dancing is the way it makes me feel.
When I’m sad, I will go into my basement and improve dances until I feel better.
If I’m angry, I’ll take my anger out through dance.
When I’m excited, I’ll put my excitement through dance.
Dance is my stress reliever.
It makes me feel special and meaningful.

What specifically does working with the Flu Crew entail? How did you find out about this?
The Flu Crew happens every year in November! What I do specifically is I hand out paperwork to all the “customers” who are getting their flu shot done. Then they are directed to a specific location to get their shot done!
I make sure to greet them with humor and a big smile to make sure they feel comfortable!
My step father,Robert Hockenbury, works for the Lehigh Valley Health Network and would sign us up each year for the Flu Crew. It is a family tradition with me, my brother, my mother, and my step dad!

What are some of your favorite things to take pictures of? How did you find your passion for photography?
One of my favorite objects to shoot are cars. When my dad took me to my first car show in Connecticut 8 years ago, my dad gave me one of his old cameras and I went around taking pictures of as many cars as I can. Ever since then I have expressed an interest in photography.
The picture attached below is my friend, “Tyler Weaver’s” car that I recently captured back in April 2020.
This picture is my favorite photo because it captures the greatest moment in my life. Being around my friends and family, and capturing them doing what they love and what I love, makes me feel warm and happy inside.

What do you love so much about going to car shows! What is your favorite car! Why?
When I was only 10 years old, my father took me all the way to Connecticut for my first car show. It was the first time I saw my dad very passionate about something he loves! It was a cold, chilly day so my dad and I were suited up and walking around looking at cars. It didn’t really spark an interest in me until I saw a pink 1956 Chevy bel-air. One of my dream cars! All I did was walk around with my father and take pictures of all the old cars that caught my eye! My dad and I bonded over cars and got really close! So after that day all I wanted to do was go to every car event with my father! It was our thing ;)
For me it is so hard to pick only one car that is my favorite, so here are my top two.

How do you balance everything that you have on your plate as you are involved in so many things!
Time Management!
I am very serious about time management!
I make sure before I go to bed, I know what I am doing the next day, what time I’m waking up, what time I’m leaving, or what I have planned for the day.
If I didn’t have anything planned, I would go insane and become very stressed.
For me I would go to school 5 days a week and have dance everyday after school. The weekends are reserved for my car events and photography!

Anberlin Weaver

Anberlin Weaver - Pennsylvania
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Robin Lombardi
Photography by Sarah Liz photography LLC
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Anberlin Weaver has battled with ADHD and mood disorder her whole life and dancing helps her let go and be herself no matter what anyone thinks of her. She is inspiring due to her passion for dance letting it all out on the dance floor. It lets her dance through her emotions rather than saying them out loud. She has jumped through a lot of obstacles in the 13 years of her life, but she has never given up. It has been extremely hard for her knowing not everyone understands her journey but hopefully will help others that are going through the same thing related to her. She still has a lot to learn in life on how to deal with her disorders. Dancing is her passion and I hope she keeps following her dreams and reaches her goals.

What obstacles have you faced through having ADHD and mood disorder your whole life, and how have you persevered through them?
The obstacles I have faced through having ADHD and mood disorder is getting distracted very easily. I seem to talk a lot when needing to be focused on certain things that are important. Learning how to handle situations better before reacting. Just simply be excepted by others is probably my biggest obstacle because no one really knows how I feel and just trying to fit in. I have preserved from my flaws and learning that it isn’t ok and still trying to understand how to fit in and be myself at the same time.

Tell me about your passion for dance and what you love most about it.
My passion for dance is to entertain people and performing! I started at the age of 3 years old dancing. It is very important to me because my mom used to dance when she was younger. She has inspired me to never give up on something I love.

Picture

How has dance allowed you to express yourself and share your emotions freely?
What I love about dance is to show how I feel in that moment while dancing. I pick songs for solos that I can relate too, helping with telling my story. It is challenging for me to allow myself to let it out but when I do it shares with others how I am feeling.

What is one memorable experience you have had through dance that you will always remember and cherish?
A memorable experience I have had through dance is at a national dance competition in 2017 I received a scholarship to come back to a convention.

How can your journey and all that you have conquered inspire others who have been through similar challenges like you, and how can you relate to them?
My journey can inspire others who have been through similar challenges and how sometimes it’s hard to share emotions with others.

Mira Henry - Virginia
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Ally Day Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Mira Henry is one of the most hard-working students I have ever had. She is extremely mature for her age and is an amazing role model for the younger students at our dance studio. She is the first one to offer help and has been my teaching assistant all year. Not only is she stunning and talented, but she is so humble and kind. It is always a joy to work with her whether it’s in class or behind the camera.
Picture
Photography by Ally Day Photography
What do you love most about dance and when did your passion for dance start?
As much I love dancing itself, it’s my team that makes dance so enjoyable and through this, my passion for dance grew. In my opinion, your love for a sport means nothing if you don’t also love who you are working with. I did not realize this until my first year on the competition team in 3rd grade. It was then that I realized I wanted to continue dancing not only because of my love for dancing but because the people I was dancing with gave me energy and made me better.

How have you found ways to show others what dance means to you, and how has it impacted your life?
I have found that through social media I have been able to show others what dance means to me. Especially through the Instagram account that I share with my team. Working with my group on this account has strengthened our bond and many have found out about our group. We post about our own dance routines as well as famous dancers and their impact on the art. We are also using our account to call attention to racial injustice and influential black dancers like Misty Copeland.

Tell me about the ways you give back to your community through all that you are involved in at school.
Throughout Middle School, I have tried to be involved in as much as I could with my crazy dance schedule. Starting in 7th grade I was a member of my school’s drama bord and last year I was named head of technical theater. During my 8th grade year, I also was an admissions ambassador at my school. I helped my school community but helping with afterschool events, open houses, and tours. I loved being an active member of my middle school community and hope to continue to be an active member as I continue into high school.

How have you also been involved in your dance community by being a teaching assistant and helping others in your studio learn to dance?
On average I assist 1-2 classes a week. Through this, I strengthen my teaching skills and help younger kids develop their love and passion for dance. I enjoy working with Ms. Alison, the dance teacher.

What advice would you give to inspire others to become active in their communities through their passions, just like you have?
I would say it may be scary to get involved and use your voice in front of people; however, once you put yourself out in the open it’s not as scary and you will enjoy it. For example, If I never used my voice I would probably never have become a teaching assistant which is one of my favorite parts of the week.

What do you love most about working alongside your dad in photography, and how has it strengthened your relationship?
I love working alongside my dad in photography because of all the time it has given us together. We always have so much fun when I get to help him with sessions. I’ve learned so much about photography and life from my dad. Watching him work hard all the time has shown me how important it is to have a good work ethic in life. Working with him for so many years has also made me come out of my shell more and learn how to be more of a people person. I absolutely love getting to help my dad because I believe it has made me a better person, and has strengthened our relationship in every way.

As a dancer who has been dancing for thirteen years, what have you learned through dance and what has it taught you?
As a dancer for 13 years, I’ve learned a lot about dance, myself, and life. Dancing has forced me to become more independent, responsible, and disciplined. Dance has always pushed me to become the best version of myself, and to constantly work hard. For me, dancing is almost like an escape from the outside world around me. No matter what kind of day I had, I knew that when I could get in a space and start dancing, I would be happy. Dance has also given me some of my best friends in life. The girls that I’ve had the opportunity dancing with every week have become my best friends, and I’m so thankful for that.

Tell me about the different ways you have been involved in your school community including being involved in many different programs and clubs at your school.
Throughout high school I tried very hard to be involved in many different clubs and leadership groups. I was a member of Student Council, Beta Club, Key Club, FCCLA, Pep Club, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Spanish Club, and Mu Alpha Theta. My senior year I was also Student Council Vice President, FCCLA President, and Senior Class Vice President. Being involved in many clubs and organizations at school shaped me into a more responsible person. Because of these clubs, I was given many opportunities to be a leader in my school, which I feel will help me all throughout life.

What was your experience like going to four different mission trips through your church including Guatemala? What was a memorable experience you shared while helping others there?
Getting to go to Guatemala four times for missions has changed my life in so many ways. While in Guatemala I had the opportunity to help build houses for some families. I also got to play games and spend quality time with children in the villages and nearby schools. One summer I even had the opportunity to bring and pass out tap shoes to some children at a school! With the tap shoes we were all able to dance together. Being able to combine my love for dance and my love for helping others was so much fun and really life-changing.

How have you and your dad been able to capture seniors who have graduated high school in 2020 through photography in a new light during this pandemic?
Through the pandemic my dad wanted to come up with something to do to honor other Class of 2020 Seniors, like myself. My dad took some pictures of me on our front porch with many items around me such as, my cap and gown, prom dress, dance and school awards, and senior t-shirts. We loved the pictures and felt that every senior should have the opportunity to have those photographs taken. My dad then came up with the idea to offer free senior porch sessions to any graduating 2020 senior. We had over 100 people respond and I was able to help my dad with the sessions! It was so much fun getting to meet other 2020 seniors, help my dad photograph and honor them, and spend quality time with my dad before I left and went off to college.

What advice would you give to other teens to stay active in their communities by doing things they love like you have?
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! You will accomplish so much in life after you do. Do what makes you the happiest and make sure that whatever it is, you work hard. It’s so important to be involved and give back to your community when you can. Find ways to use your skills and what you love doing to help others. And most importantly, always keep a positive attitude! I’ve learned that through all the ups and downs in life, the best thing that you can do is be positive.

 Ashlee Wood - Kentucky
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by
Aleshia Martin
Photography by April Manning Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ashlee is a very hardworking and determined girl! Since quarantine, she’s found a love for painting, especially door hangers. She’s now painting and selling door hangers left and right through a Facebook group she made! I’m so proud of her and I can’t wait to witness her accomplish her goals of becoming a labor & delivery nurse!
Picture
Photography by April Manning Photography

How did you get the idea to start painting door hangers?
I had seen so many cute ideas of door signs for Mother’s Day gifts on Pinterest, so I made one for someone for Mother’s Day and she encouraged me to make a business out of it!

How far has your painting business gone?
What are your goals for it? Right now it’s just starting out, I’ve made around 10 signs and sold them, but my Facebook group grows by the day! My goal is to make them for people for fun and to make a little bit of money, it’d be nice to make a business out of it once I get out of high school; but I don’t want to be super overwhelmed for my senior year.

Picture
Photography by Ashlee Wood

Why did you decide you wanted to become a labor and delivery nurse?
I have such a unique love for babies! For a while I debated back and forth between labor & delivery and NICU; but recently I decided my heart probably couldn’t take everything that happens in NICU.

Picture
Photography by April Manning Photography

What other goals do you have for your future and your career?
I plan to study nursing at EKU, hopefully minoring in photography. While working in labor & delivery, I’d like to eventually be able to offer mothers/families quality newborn pictures for a low cost!

Tell me more about playing golf in high school!
What is your favorite memory with the team? I just started golfing this past year, as dance is my main sport; I’ve been dancing since I was 4! Dance had become stressful last year, so I thought maybe I should try something to help balance my stress; which is when I discovered golf!
