What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
While my nomination encapsulates my outward persona, I feel that one of my most inspiring characteristics is my resilience. Throughout my life, I have faced countless burdens and numerous hardships. From growing up in a single parent household to balancing two jobs while maintaining first rank in my class, I have had to develop both a sense of adaptability and resilience. Instead of cower at the first sign of trouble, I have learned to face my problems head on with a sense of determination and spirit. Though these situations can be challenging, they have shaped who I am today and taught me to thrive in the face of adversity.

Tell us about your mom and a memory with her you will never forget.
My mom is the most loving and kind-hearted person I have ever met. She will always put others before herself, but she is not afraid to stand up for what is right and just. One of my favorite memories is when she introduced me to authentic sushi. I have loved sushi since I was a small child, but had never tasted coastal, fresh sushi. We spent the entire night talking, laughing, and enjoying one of the most amazing meals.

What is a tradition with her you hope never ends?
One of my favorite traditions with mom is every Mother’s Day we go to brunch just the two of us and after we both get a new ear piercing. The tradition started a few years back after one of our brunches. We were waiting for our check, idly talking about what we wanted to do for the rest of the day, when my mom turned to me and blurted, “want to get a new piercing?” It was the last thing I expected her to say, but the spontaneity and excitement had us coming back over and over. We still do it every Mother’s Day, and now she gets one with me everytime I go.

Tell us about your jobs and what you have learned from them.
I have worked three jobs in my life so far; I have been a hostess, a receptionist, and a barista. Though these jobs vary in skill and expectations, they have taught me valuable lessons: patience, adaptability, and communication. Customer service is not always the easiest. Customers might want special accommodations or order an insane drink that takes 5 minutes to make, but these jobs have shown me that you never know someone else’s situation and it is your job to make it easier for them. I have also developed flexibility when working. Not everyone always goes the way you plan, and you can't just shut down when you're on the clock. So you have to adapt and make the best of the circumstances thrown your way.

Why is it important to you to maintain first rank in your class?
I have always valued working hard in school and taken pride in my education. I have spent countless hours studying, learning, and applying the information I’ve learned in the classroom to my everyday life. Being ranked first has given me validation that I am proud of and the goal of maintaining it provides me motivation to continue working hard each and every day.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?
I am most looking forward to making lasting memories with all my best friends. We are all planning to attend different schools next year, so we are hoping to make the most of this year. Whether that be late night study sessions, going ‘all-out’ for our spirited football games, or a relaxed movie night, I will cherish each and every moment that we have left together!

What else would you like to talk about?
One of my favorite activities is to learn. Not only do I take pride in my schoolwork, but I also love to explore outside the classroom. One outlet I've found for this is traveling.
Every year, my mom and I take a trip to a new place to experience the culture, the food, and the people. School and traveling have both been a way to blossom my mind and expand my perspective.

Tell us about a favorite place you have traveled to and why.
My favorite place I have traveled to is New York. It was the first trip that my mom and I ever took by ourselves, and I realized there was more out there than just my little hometown. I had been on trips before with our whole family, but this trip with my mom was more intimate; we had no one to answer to and a whole city to explore. We went to the Statue of Liberty, we saw a Broadway show, and of course, we shopped. My mom and I had just gone through a lot, so this trip bonded us as well as showed us that there is always a silver lining. Even at the young age of 10, I knew that I would cherish this trip for the rest of my life.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
One thing I am most passionate about is the imaginative, thrilling and insightful world of books. Literature has been able to connect our diverse community in the face of adversity through countless generations. From fiction to self-help or autobiographies to spirituality, there is a book for every occasion and every individual. When I am reading, I am able to escape reality and immerse myself into the endless possibilities that a book can create.

What is one book you've read recently that you would highly recommend?
One book I recently read that I would recommend is Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. The book follows Charlie, an introverted and troubled teenager, as he tries to navigate the foreign and intimidating halls of high school. Charlie tries to grapple with all the hardships he has already faced while also trying to face the brutal world of high school. This book not only showed me that you never know what the person next to you has been through but also that, even if it might feel like it, you are never alone in this life.

If you could change the ending to any book, what book would it be, what is the ending now, and how would you change it?
One book ending that I would change is Hunger Games: Mockinjay by Suzanne Collins. While the book is beautifully written and has a wholesome ending, there was one unnecessary death: Finnick Odair. Not only was he thrown into two games at the age of 14 and 24, but he was also exploited for his victory and physical attributes by President Snow. After surviving both games and sneaking into the capitol, he heroically sacrificed himself so Katniss could make it to the end. Though his selfless act saved them all from death, it easily could have been a less significant person to the series.

How did you find your photographer, Hayly Hext Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer, Hayly. through growing up alongside her daughter. Though I was nervous to shoot for my first time. Hayly's easygoing spirit and confident composure made me feel instantly at ease. We immediately clicked in our vision for my pictures and she was so open to letting me express myself. Not only does she have a natural talent for photography but she also has a way of capturing the unique identity of each individual she shoots.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had a full free day, I would probably drive to the lake and spend my day there. I would spend the morning drinking coffee and reading on the dock, then surf until sunset, and finally spend the night around the firepit with my family.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Last year, I was elected as our school’s UNICEF chapter president. I hope to not only further our involvement with UNICEF and the children in need but to also bring light to the chapter and its growing cause. Along with this, I am also starting the process of applying to colleges and deciding where I want to settle in for the next 4 years. I hope to hear good news back and find clarity on where I am supposed to be!

What plans are you making for the end of summer?
My summer is unfortunately already over, but I have started my senior year and am really enjoying it so far. I am also a part of the school-work program, so the start of my year has been settling into my new schedule and also adapting to working during the school year. But outside of school, my mom and I have been fixing up our old shed in our backyard as a place for our family to use. Hopefully we will be done in the next few weeks, and I plan to spend my time out there reading, studying, and hanging out with my friends!

What colleges are you looking at and what are you hoping to study?
At the moment, I am most interested in the University of North Carolina and the University of Texas, though I am not yet sure about my exact academic discipline. My plan is to get a business degree and then go to law school afterward.

Photography by Loretta K. Wall Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover my passion for the gym, and my drive to become a better person each day. Working out is my hobby; it makes me feel strong both physically and mentally. This is because most of the time I am stronger than I think. While having a drive to become a better person, I often challenge myself daily. I have learned new characteristics and attributes about myself and the person I am becoming.

Tell us about your normal workout routine?
My weekly workout routine is two days of lower body and two days of upper body. One lower body day is usually quads and glutes and the other is hamstrings and glutes. Usually I will do calf workouts each day. One of my upper body days will be back and biceps. The next will be triceps and shoulders. My workout routine also consists of a cardio day. Which would either be doing the stairmaster or going on a run. Sometime during the week I will add a rest day when I feel like it is needed.

Where does your drive to work out come from?
My drive to workout comes from different people online. One influencer I look up to is Analis Cruz who is popular in the gym industry. My drive also comes from my past self. In high school being involved in swimming and cheerleading allowed me to have more muscle and be more toned. I now push myself to grow more muscle then I used to have and to become more toned.

How do you develop your mental toughness for this?
I know I can become a better person each and every day whether that is mentally or physically. I encourage myself that I can always push myself to do more. I remind myself that pushing myself past my boundaries can positively affect me. Everything I do is a lesson and I look at the bright side in every situation.

What new characteristics have you learned?
One characteristic I have learned is how ambitious I am. Especially when it comes to something I am passionate about such as the gym or learning more about my religion. Another characteristic I have learned is how disciplined I am. Such as wanting to skip the gym but having the discipline to push myself to go. A characteristic I have become better at is being patient. When wanting to achieve certain results i have to remind myself to be patient and that good things take time.

What else would you like to talk about?
One thing I feel passionate about is my religion. My eyes were opened to new experiences while becoming closer to my religion. I have been Catholic my whole life but last year I decided to become more consistent with reading the Bible. I began to find it essential to learn more about the Lord and his word. While my faith became stronger, I felt myself growing and connecting with God. By spreading Gods word, I tried to help those around me who needed it. I learned to face obstacles and every day became a new learning experience for me.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned in your studies of the Bible?
One interesting thing I have learned in my studies is that God has a solution for everything. In the Bible there are many lessons that can help anyone’s situation. When falling to sin or feeling down spiritually I am able to look towards the Bible and remind myself of Gods love. I am able to remind myself why I should sin less and become closer to the Lord.

How have you helped those around you by spreading God's word?
When spreading God’s word I have been able to help those around me. By explaining that everything is in his timing. We may not understand now what he is doing but one day we will. Everything that happens is for a reason and he will always create the best path for us in life.

What are you reading now in the Bible and how does it affect your daily life?
At the moment I have been reading James 2:14-17 which talks about faith and deeds. This affects my daily life by keeping me disciplined and reminding me to have deeds for the Lord, not just faith. This teaches me that my words can only mean so much but it’s my actions that will help me get closer to God. Such as reading my bible or trying my best to sin less. By being reminded that my life has become more positive and I have noticed my connection with the Lord has become stronger.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I would like to talk about the skills college taught that impacted my life. Being at college, away from home was difficult for me. I often felt alone and isolated, so I decided it was best for me to put myself out there. I started learning how to build relationships with others. I learned how to be independent and disciplined. I took every opportunity given to me and learned how to manage my time. Every day I made new connections, and my morals and values began to grow.

What do you wish you had known before moving into college?
I wish I had known that it’s okay to put myself out there. Moving away from family and not knowing anyone at a new school was intimidating to me. This caused me to be shy and introverted at the beginning of my freshman year of college. However, once I put myself out there I found my people who I know will be my lifelong friends.

What are you studying and what do you hope to do with your degree?
I am a pre- dental biology major at West Texas A&M. With this degree I hope to get into dental school. After dental school, I plan on becoming an orthodontist.

How did you find your photographer, Loretta K. Wall Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer took my 18th birthday pictures and from then on we have done a few sessions together. My experience with Loretta has always been amazing. She makes sessions fun and enjoyable. Her attitude is always optimistic, and she is a very supportive person. I love how she is down to earth and knows how to make others laugh. She is always positive and is attentive to her clients and their photos. I have made a great friendship these past few years traveling with her to other countries.

What advice do you have for teens getting ready to do a photo shoot with Loretta?
One piece of advice I would tell them would be to be your true self with Loretta. She has such a kind heart and is always willing to help others out. She knows how to make other comfortable and by being their true self will help the photo shoot become even more fun.
If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do most likely I would be hanging out with my friends. Either in their dorm or around campus just talking about life or making plans for us to do.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
This is my first year as a community assistant at West Texas A&M and I am super excited to see what new opportunities I am given. Such as new traits I will gain and new people I will meet.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to put themselves out there and to not care what other people think. Doing this allowed me to gain new friendships, relationships, and confidence. I am able to have new opportunities and understand who I truly am as a person.

Kenlie Roth

Kenlie Roth – Montana
Nomination & Photography by TBarnes Photography
Issue 82 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kenlie is truly inspiring with her dedication and diverse talents. I've known her since she was born, and she has excelled in volleyball, basketball, track, flag football, wrestling, brave mentoring, and the National Honor Society. As a junior, she was selected as a captain of our flag football team, showcasing her leadership skills. Despite her reluctance for photos, I convinced her to take senior pictures, and they turned out amazing. Kenlie, a senior at Flathead High School, lives by the quote "Enjoy the little things" and plans to pursue a degree in the medical field.

Photography by TBarnes Photography

What would you like to talk about first?
My participation as a student-athlete all four years of high school with the exception of my junior year when I tore my ACL towards the end of the flag football season. As mentioned before I have been involved in a variety of different sports throughout high school from volleyball, basketball, track, flag football, and wrestling.I have been a three sport athlete every year and even when I was injured I was still involved as a manager for the varsity basketball team.

Tell us about your volleyball career.
My volleyball career started when I was in elementary school when I played on a local rotary team. I then continued to play throughout my middle school years on both the school team and a travel team. Then when I entered high school I played my freshman year along with an 18u travel team. After that I had questions of playing the next year which is when flag football became a sport in a few of the Montana high schools and it worked out perfectly so that is when my flag football journey began.

What position do you play in basketball and why does it suit you?
I played basketball for four years on both school and travel ball teams, during the time I played basketball I was a guard which suits me because it is a big leadership position along with being loud and communicating well which is a few of my strong suits.

In track, what is a favorite accomplishment of yours?
My biggest accomplishment in track was making it to the divisional meet my freshman year in two different events. It was really cool because there was not many freshman that qualified for the divisional meet so being able to participate in two events was very rewarding.

What is a favorite memory with your flag football team?
My all time favorite memory with my flag football team was my first year playing as a sophomore when we went to Seattle with the other inaugural Montana flag football teams to watch the Atlanta Falcons vs. the Seattle Seahawks, scrimmaged other Montana teams there, and got to watch the Falcons pregame, walk-through practice and meet the players. It was so much fun going to experience all of that with such an amazing team. Definitely a memory I will never forget.

Why did you start wrestling and what do you love most about it?
I started wrestling because I became really frustrated with basketball and figured why not try something new while I still have the opportunity too. My favorite part about wrestling is the mental toughness you build in the sport from the hot practices, cutting weight, and the one on one matches. It was probably the most difficult sport I've been involved in because everything is new to you but it was so nice to have a very supportive team where we were all able to learn together.

What is brave mentoring and why is it important to you?
Brave mentoring is a leadership program offered at my high school that allows the upperclassman to help the incoming freshman feel welcome and prepared for high school. It is important to me because coming in as a freshman can be really scary but having upperclassman there to help you navigate your high school experience is so helpful. It is also important to me because it helps me improve my leadership skills which are a very valuable trait in every aspect of life.

What has been your favorite service project in the NHS and why?
My favorite service project in NHS is volunteering in Y.A.C. Y.A.C. is the youth activation committee which allows high school students to volunteer and help with the special education community in the valley. More specifically my favorite Y.A.C. event is the Special Olympics because it is so fun to be apart of the athletes experience and see all the joy n their faces to be there and competing.

What is your best leadership skill?
My best leadership skill would be communicating. I am a very loud and outspoken individual which I believe is very important when it comes to being a leader. This is very important because as a leader you have a lot of people looking up to you and a lot of people that are very comfortable with talking to you, therefore it is very important that you are able to communicate with them.

How would you describe yourself as a leader?
I would describe myself as competitive, driven, and social. I have always been very competitive in everything thing I do and I think it has helped me a lot because as a competitive leader it helps keeps the team motivated and competitive as well. That also kind of goes along with driven because I always go the extra mile and do what I can to help the team succeed and stay driven as well. Finally being social. Like mentioned before I am very well at communicating with my team and making sure everyone feels welcome.

How did you find your photographer, TBarnes Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I have known my photographer forever and she has been my teacher at Flathead High School along with someone I can always count on being there for me. I am not a photogenic person and I do not enjoy taking photos but my senior photo session was really fun and enjoyable. I loved that we both went into it kind of unknown of where we were gonna go but we found the perfect spots along the way.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
I am most looking forward to flag football season. The first couple years of flag football has kind of fired my competitive drive a lot and flag football will be my first sports season back since my ACL injury last September so I think this season will just mean a lot to me which is why I am looking forward to it so much.

What will you miss most about high school?
The thing I will miss the most about high school is the connections that I have built. Between teachers, coaches, friends, and classmates I have created so many awesome connections but at the same time a lot of connections that may be lost once I am out of high school.

Why did you choose the medical field - and what are you hoping to do in it?
I chose the medical field because I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing something that I enjoy and I think helping others and meeting new people daily would be something that I will enjoy spending my life doing. I'm hoping to go to dental school and someday become a very successful dentist.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am enrolled in four International Baccalaureate classes including calculus, sports med, physics, and english. I am also involved in our schools biomedical science program and have been since my freshman year. I plan to receive merit distinction which involves taking six IB courses and testing out in three along with the health distinction where you must take biomedical sciences all four years along with organic chemistry and ten internship hours.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
The Montana outdoors. There is so much you can do and you experience something new every time. From hiking the mountains, spending time in the lakes, and camping in the woods, it never lets you down. Each hike is a new breathtaking view that has me in aw every time even though I have lived here my entire life.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Montana outdoors. Whether I was hiking, spending time on the lake, or even just sitting on my front porch I would spend my whole day outside. There's so much you can do outside which is why I would spend my entire day outside doing whatever may come about.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited to graduate high school and for whatever may come after that. I've always lived in a small town so I am really excited to go out and do new things somewhere else.

Layna Haywood – Tennessee
Nomination & Photography by Amber Haywood
Issue 82 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Layna Haywood is one of the brightest people I know! She can lighten up the darkest room by simply smiling. She is always known for helping others, spreading positivity, smiling, encouraging others, complimenting pretty much everyone she meets, excelling in academics and school, and her radiating good energy to those around her. She does everything with hard work and love! She is the sweetest girl with the kindest heart and an undying light to everyone she meets! Layna is greatly loved by her community, and she loves them right back!

Images by Layna & Amber Haywood and Eden Grace Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Most people know me because of my positive attitude, which is amazing, but I do have some personal accomplishments I’m proud of as well! Academics are important to me. I have always been a straight-A student! I’m also captain of my cheer team, a president/officer in most clubs my school offers, and I love to lead by example to the younger kids in my community and volunteering! One day, I plan to take my knowledge and apply it to becoming a level 1 trauma nurse, helping others and saving many lives!

Why is it important to you to maintain a positive attitude?
I believe that life is what you make it. It is also very short. I want to make the best of every second for as long as I can! I feel like there are way too many beautiful things in life for us to sit around and be sad or stressed. Keeping a positive attitude has not only helped me reach several personal goals and face challenges head-on, but it has given me a chance to inspire those around me and be the reason they smile and feel worthy!

What do you do to encourage others - give us an example.
You never know what is going on inside someone’s head, but you can be the reason they feel a little more happiness! I’m a very optimistic person, I love to throw around compliments any chance I get, aiming to make others feel more seen and confident! It can change their whole day! I also enjoy being a “safe place”, to the people around me. It is important to me to make it known to others that they are appreciated and that their feelings are valid.

What do you love most about school?
School spirit has always been my favorite part of school! Considering I'm from such a small town, the atmosphere is just amazing. The whole town will show up for games and pack the stands, the student section will go all out, the band is always loud, the tobacco barns are fired up, and I get to do what I love most, cheerleading! We have this section where all the loud trucks line up and tailgate, and on touchdowns, they will all rev up their trucks! The small-town spirit will forever be my favorite part of school.

What is your favorite class and what is the most interesting thing you've learned so far?
Considering I want to become a trauma nurse, I have to say that my favorite class is my nursing class! I’m learning so many things to prepare me for my future career from certifications and life-saving skills down to professionalism. This class has also allowed me to job shadow at hospitals, gaining a lot more experience! As much as I love the class itself, the teacher herself has made the biggest impact on me. She always pushes me to be better, makes class enjoyable, and does all she can to make sure I am confident and prepared for my future!

What is a favorite tradition with your family that you hope never ends?
Every night before we go to bed, we always manage to end our night sitting around and talking about our day! We will talk about everything that went on at school, how our sports practices/games went, how busy work was, and stories about our favorite parts of the day. We always end up laughing and having fun. It may not seem like a lot, but I will always cherish the memories and the bond that we have!

Tell us about your cheer career.
If you asked me about cheer, I’d tell you it’s my favorite thing ever! But, if you asked me on a deeper level, I'd tell you that my life wouldn’t be complete without it. I’m the happiest version of myself when I’m cheering. Most of my favorite memories came from cheer! I started in middle school, and I fell in love with it! Now, I'm a senior and I’m the captain of the cheer team! I’m mostly known for my constant smile and high energy! When I age out, a piece of my heart will always be stuck with it.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
I have to say my favorite memory with my cheer team is most definitely when we hit a buzzer-beater win in the championship game against our rival school! Our school hosted the championship game, so the whole town shut down and came out for this game. The stands were so packed that people had to stand on the floor! I’d never seen our student section so crowded and loud! In our town, rival games are a huge deal! When we made the shot, the whole crowd swarmed the court and started celebrating. It’s a core memory for me!

What clubs are you in?
I am currently active in and/or president of FCA, HOSA, Senior Beta, FCCLA, Key Club, Pep Club, Art Club, Book Club, Film Club, Yearbook Club, and High School Events Club!

What has been your favorite service project and why?
I love to do as much as I can to help those in need! My favorite service project so far was my birthday project. On my birthday, instead of bringing me gifts, I told my friends to bring shelter items such as socks, deodorant, snacks, blankets, and many other things. At my party, we made little goodie bags to donate to homeless shelters! Since my birthday is around Christmas, I tried to add in Christmas cards to get them in the spirit! To me, that’s what its all about!

What are you doing now to prepare for a career as a level 1 trauma nurse?
Right now, I am trying to job shadow as much as I can in the ER to get some first-hand experience! At the moment, I am participating in nursing classes learning many skills to carry with me into the nursing field! I have applied to college, and I can't wait to see the opportunities each one has in store for me!

What else would you like to talk about?
Something everyone should hear is that you are amazing just the way you are! It doesn’t matter how you look, it’s about what’s on the inside. Over the years, I have been bullied continuously but I never let it change my heart. Through it all, I remained kind and came out more successful. Some people will always find something bad to say about anything, so you might as well just be you and do what makes you happy! What is on the inside is so much more important because if the whole world was blind, who would you still impress?

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Something I am passionate about is having Jesus as the center of my life! I wish I could take all the credit for my accomplishments, but I would be lying. I was able to accomplish so much because I had Jesus on my side. When you accept Jesus, you radiate this beautiful light to everyone around you. I have faced several challenges in life, but in the end, my faith was so strong that it never stripped my happiness or stopped me from reaching my goals. I don’t call it a religion; I call it a friendship!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Earlier this year, my house burnt down and sadly we lost everything inside. It was a really tough loss for me and my family. Through the process, I tried to stay positive, and I am beyond grateful to everyone who reached out and helped. Now with the kind help of others, we were able to put it towards building a new house! Within the next few months, we will be moving into our new home, and I am super excited and grateful! This is just proof that even in the darkest times there is still light!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I cannot stress this enough…do it all for your future self! Even when it gets hard and you want to stop trying, don’t, because in the end it will all be worth it and your future self will be so proud!

Ali Granfors

Picture

Ali Granfors – Missouri
Nomination by Erin Granfors
Photography by NKG Imagery
Issue 82 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ali is truly inspirational as she takes on her dad's diagnosis. She advocates for others who share the same diagnosis and educates those who aren't familiar with it. Through her efforts, she brings awareness and support to a cause that deeply affects her own family.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Not only do I advocate for liver diagnoses like my dad's, but I also take pride in spreading awareness about kids' and teens' mental health! As someone who struggles with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, I know firsthand how impactful the support of others can be!

What else would you like to talk about?
My passion for medicine! After seeing such incredible surgeons, doctors, nurses, and care assistants take such delicate care of my dad, it introduced me to my aspirations to be a healthcare worker myself. Furthermore, I participated in an internship at Children’s Mercy Hospital, which was the most eye-opening experience. There are so many areas and careers in the medical field that interest me! Whether I decide to be a pediatric nurse, a trauma physician, or an intrauterine surgeon, I’m thrilled to see what the medical field has to offer!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Animals! I’ve found so much comfort in animals throughout my life and I’ve always felt a bond with every animal I meet. Even the animals who some would consider “unlovable” like my two rats, Taco and Tofu, or my Pac-Man frog named Waffles. There’s something so pure and gentle about animals that you just don’t experience with anything else!

How did you find your photographer, NKG Imagery? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found NKG through a few friends who had done some shoots with him before! After applying to be a senior model rep, I quickly developed a huge heart for doing shoots! NKG has not only taken incredible images for my senior year but also provides the senior model reps with the opportunity to build friendships and bonds together with his group shoots! My first senior shoot was amazing! Even through the 90-degree weather and forgotten outfits, he continued with a smile on his face the entire time!

Madelynn Rasmussen

Picture

Madelynn Rasmussen – Illinois
Nomination & Photography by Stacy Rae Photography
Issue 82 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madelynn is very involved in pageants, cheerleading and dance. Madelynn won 2024 Illinois Sunburst State Queen. Madelynn also coaches youth cheerleading, is a camp counselor and is very active serving her community through various charities and events.
Photography by Stacy Rae Photography

Tell us about your pageant career.
I competed in my first pageant when I was 7, I am naturally a very shy person and I have general anxiety. The older girls competing in pageants always looked so calm and confident. I made it my goal to be like them. Since that first competition I have held 2 state and 2 local titles. I am currently Sunbursts 2024 Teen Miss Illinois.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned being in pageants?
The most interesting thing I've learned in pageants is that none of us are really calm or confident. We are all striving to be the best versions of ourselves.

What is the hardest part of pageantry vs the easiest?
The hardest part of pageantry for me is public speaking. As I mentioned previously I have general anxiety which makes speaking to new people very challenging. The easiest part of pageants, and my favorite part, is making friends with the other young women. We are all trying our best and in doing so are very supportive of each other.

What is your cheer team like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I am in my fifth season of all-star cheerleading. As a senior I am one of the oldest athletes on the team and in the gym. This provides me with an opportunity to lead. This is my third season competing at our level and I have the experience to be confident in my skills.

What is a favorite memory with your team?
My favorite memory with all of the teams I have been on is our bond. As we perform the stunts required we are trusting each other with our safety. This can make or break a team, If your team has a tight bond the trust level is really special.

What do you enjoy most about coaching youth cheerleading?
As a coach I get to work with young athletes. I get to guide them in developing their potential on the mat and as friends. My favorite part of coaching is watching the athletes grow from one year to another.

What styles of dance do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
In the past I have studied tap, jazz, and ballet. For the last two seasons I have focused on Jazz Funk which is a fusion of jazz and hip hop.

What is an accomplishment you made in dance that you worked really hard for?
My biggest accomplishment in dance has been overcoming the challenge of turns. As a cheerleader our movements are very precise, as a dancer they need to be very smooth. Recently I worked with a coach that was able to break down each step of my turns and make the movement more fluid. After years it finally clicked and I was able to perform my turns smoothly.

What is your favorite thing to do with kids as a camp counselor?
As a camp counselor I enjoy playing games and crafting with the children. I work primarily with our Tot camp which is ages 3-5. I enjoy challenging their creativity and seeing what they come up with.

What else would you like to talk about?
As a cheer coach and camp counselor I have the opportunity to have a voice, be a leader, and be a role model for all children. I want children to learn they are powerful in their own ways. I want them to be able to advocate for themselves. I can do this best by leading by example.

What charity that you work on is most near and dear to your heart and why?
The charity that I work with most near and dear to my heart is Caring 4 Kids. Caring 4 Kids Clothing is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential clothing items to children in need. Their mission is to supply basic necessities like socks, shoes, and jackets to hundreds of children who go without proper clothing each year, bringing joy and making a significant difference in their lives.

What repeating event that you help out with is your favorite and why?
I'm so grateful to have attended the return ceremony for the Lake County Honor Flight! It was a truly moving experience to see the faces of these American heroes light up as they returned from their journey to Washington, D.C. The trip, which took them to memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifices, was a small token of our appreciation for their bravery and dedication. Witnessing the warm welcome they receive upon their returns is a heartwarming reminder of the impact this program has on the lives of our veterans. My brother is currently active duty with the U.S. Army and this gives me an opportunity to honor his, and their, unwavering service to our country.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a passion for working with children who have special needs diagnosis.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Two things I could talk about forever are cheerleading and my brother. I have been cheering for almost 10 years now and I have had so much fun making new friends and achieving my goals. My brother is my biggest role model. He enlisted in the Army 3 years ago. I've always looked up to his bravery and service. I hope I can live up to the example he has set for me.I love him so much.

How did you find your photographer, Stacy Rae Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
She was looking for models for her class of 2025 seniors. My experience was amazing. Stacy is so nice and sweet. She put me at ease immediately and she made the whole shoot so much fun. I think my personality really shows in her photographs.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would be at my cheer gym. I enjoy pushing my body to its limits and having my coaches and teammates around me as much as possible.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am truly excited for college. I can't wait to push myself out of my comfort zone and meet new people.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever accomplished was the transition into high school. I have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and freshman year was the first time it ever affected my grades. With support and effort I was able to bring my GPA back up but it was definitely the hardest thing I've ever done.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would advise them to keep pushing through the hard times. Pushing past the obstacles and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I would like to become an occupational therapist. I would like to help people learn how to do things they weren't able to physically or cognitively do before. I am in the application process for college now. My goal is to find a school with an occupational therapy department that also has a strong cheerleading team. One aspect of myself is that I require athletic exertion and structure and being on a team provides me with both.

Who do you find inspiring?
My cheerleading coach Victor's perseverance and dedication inspired me, even as he faced his own health struggles. Despite his illness, he continued to show up to the gym and motivate others, leaving a lasting impact on those around him. His strength and resilience in the face of adversity are a testament to his character and spirit. He inspired me throughout his illness and passing and continues to inspire me today.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I don't see myself as inspiring, but I strive to be a good role model for those around me. I believe that living a life guided by values like honesty, integrity, trust, compassion, and kindness can have a positive impact on others. I aim to lead by example, being authentic and true to myself, and treating others with empathy and understanding. If my actions and behavior can inspire others to do the same, then I am humbled and grateful. My goal is to make a difference in the lives of those around me, not to seek inspiration, but to cultivate a community built on mutual respect, trust, and support.

How has your love for God shaped you as a person?
My love for God has shaped me into the best version of myself that I could possibly be. I’ve believed in him to set me on the right path as I grow up, as well as be there when I am down.

What do you love to do to help the elderly?
When helping the elderly, I enjoyed cleaning the windows of their house and cars. I watched the joy from their eyes as they got a task off their shoulders.

What do you do with the kids after school?
When I worked after school care (I don't very often anymore just because I’ve been so busy with school, work, and internships) I would take the kids outside, play card and board games, and even just help them with any homework they had.

What have you learned about yourself working at the coffee shop?
I learned that I could make friends quickly, as there are always hiring new people and we get along pretty well. I love to be social and talk to a lot of the people that come in.

Tell us about your volleyball career.
I started volleyball in 4th grade, as I played for Harrison Elementary. After I realized how much I enjoyed the sport, I got my mom into signing me up for a club/travel ball. Ever since then, I have been playing for 9 years and have had so many tough/hard/exciting/memorable experiences. I love travel volleyball so much because not only does it give me more time to play the sport I love, but it brings me together with so many girls, builds the best relationships and fulfills the strongest connections.

What do you want us to know about your brother?
My brother was one of a kind. Nothing would ever compare to the amount of times I think about him each day. Watching someone get taken from me so instantly, just to never see them again is a very hard feeling that I would never wish upon anyone. He had such a kind heart, always wanting to do something, and had so many ideas on his mind all the time. My most memorable moments were my feet hurting everytime I would go in his room because there would be 500 legos on the floor, but I would choose to walk on lego’s again if I could talk to him one more time.

What college do you hope to attend and what are you most excited about attending there?
At this time, I do not have a college planned out for me yet. Although, I am looking for one that has a big community outside of school, and hope to have a large volleyball community that welcomes me in. I look forward to meeting a lot of new people and focus on academics as I want to study Diagnostic Medical Imaging.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have been in key club at school, which is a lot of helping out in the community, I have 2 sisters that I try hard to be a good role model for. I look forward to graduate a semester early to get a little bit ahead financially before I would go to college next fall.

What leadership opportunities have you had in the key club?
In key club I have had the opportunity to take photos for our social media to help advertise our club and to show how much fun we have.

Tell us about your sisters and what you like to do with them.
I love my sisters and I try to make them want to look up to me. I take them to get ice cream, my middle sister and I like to go for a drive and get food sometimes or go to the store. I am always open to taking or picking them up from their friends house because I know how much it sucks to not have a ride anywhere, it also helps out my mom.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am passionate about wanting to be successful. I have always wanted to further my education in studying Diagnostic Medical Imaging in hopes to do sonography, as well as play high level volleyball in college. I have always seen myself helping others in the hospital, as well as being here for my mom and sisters.

How did you find your photographer, April Moore Creations LLC ? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer as she was our former photographer when we had family photos. Our experience was always great and fun, but not only was it great and fun, but the photos turned out wonderful every time. I love most about how she can get me out of my comfort zone and have a little fun with each session (definitely can get a real smile out of me).

What advice do you have for someone getting ready to do a photo shoot with April?
I would say always speak your heart and don't be afraid to let her know if you have a different idea than what she is putting out there. She is always up to doing new things and she wants you to love your pictures, so if you don’t say something that you don't like then you probably wont like the pictures as much as if you did. You also don't want to regret anything, so always put in your input as well.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You could probably find me in my bed or on the couch just relaxing and taking up the time I have to do nothing before I get back to a busy week. Sometimes if I had nothing to do and I didnt want to be in my bed all day, I would go and hang out with my friends and just play card games or pickleball.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited to begin college and learn what it's like to be more independent, as well as learning how to live on my own. As well as after college, to begin my job that I am really excited for and get started on having a family.

Raelyn Olivarez

Picture

Raelyn Olivarez – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Arnold Garza Photography
Issue 82 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Raelyn Olivarez is a hard working young lady with a standard that's second to none. Whether it is cheerleading, athletics or the classroom, she's always top notch.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Something I feel passionate about and can talk about forever is Cheerleading. I have done school cheer for the past 6 years and have done All Star cheer. I am passionate about cheerleading because of the bonds you create with your cheer sisters, the hard work you have to put in to achieve something, the competitiveness and excitement everyone has is so thrilling. Cheer is something that I will always cherish and have excitement for.

How did you find your photographer, Arnold Garza Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through Facebook and he has become a family friend. My experience with him is always amazing, he has outstanding photography/editing skills, and goes above and beyond each year. I love that I am able to be myself while taking photos and if I am unsure he is always there to give his feedback and ideas. He has been photographing my cheer pictures for 5 years now and I will continue to book with him for graduation and future pictures.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started school cheerleading in 7th grade and I am now becoming a senior so this will be my 6th year doing school cheer. I loved it from the beginning till now. It does get rough most of the time but the people I am surrounded by and the goals we set make it worth it.

What is it about cheer that you love so much?
There are many things to love about cheer. The first thing would be my coaches and teammates. They are my family throughout the whole school year and having them by my side these past years has made it 10 times better. Another thing I love about cheer is camp and comp. We compete against a few teams in game day cheer. Which is a cheer, fight song, and band chant. I love the skills and crowd involvement that my team has and hopefully counties to strive at.

What is a favorite accomplishment with cheer?
My favorite accomplishment with cheer is getting cheerleader of the week, camper of the day, and outstanding cheerleader after our first practice of starting that new tradition.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
My favorite accomplishment with my team would have to be being a part of the competition group last year and my team placing 7th at state. That is the best Alice High School cheer has done since they started competing.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
An inspiring thing about me that my nomination does not cover is that I am always willing to help others. I consider myself a role model to others younger than me looking to achieve and become better in anything that they do. I achieve in all my academics with all A’s and continue to strive to graduate with my Associate of Science degree. I consider myself an inspiration to the younger generation, to never give up, set high goals, and to work hard for what they want.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would describe my leadership style as helping someone voluntarily, being respectful and kind when helping or correcting. I do my best to give ideas and try to problem solve. I take accountability when I am wrong and do my best to correct it. There are many leadership styles and skills but the most important one for myself to have is to inspire others to be the best versions of themselves and fix mistakes to grow.

What do you love most about school?
The things I love most about school are the goals that I set for myself. Being able to think I can not achieve something then do it better than I expected is probably the best feeling.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
Something I am most looking forward to in my senior year is making everything count and enjoying the good and bad. I have so many “last” coming up so having fun and achieving goals is the greatest thing I can do for my last year of High School.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would also like to talk about my family and friends. I have a great support system behind me which gives me motivation to continue to work hard and achieve things my family did not get the chance to. I love making memories with family and friends to be able to look back at and know I was doing something right having those amazing people by my side.

What is your family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My family are hard workers and people you would love to have by your side. When we are all together there is so much laughter and jokes. I would say I fit in by being organized and stand out by being the most sensitive one.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
A family tradition I hope never ends is doing the sack race on Easter. My partner is also my cousin Jazelle. We have won these past two years and will continue too.

What do you and your friends love to do together when you all have free time?
Something my friends and I love to do together in our free time is plan a beach day and go eat after. We have so much fun together and this last time I had brought my fishing rods and enjoyed it so that is something I will start doing.

What is the most fun you had this summer?
The most fun I had this summer was going to my last NCA cheer camp and cherishing all the good and bad moments my team had.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I have nothing to do and all day to do it, you all would probably find me outside in the pool with my family and my two dogs watching us from the deck.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Something that is coming up for me that I am super excited about is starting my first day of senior year, football season, UIL cheer competition, graduating high school, and graduating with my associates degree from my local community college.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was trying out for cheerleading 6 years in a row. Each year got harder and the competition was tough. I would get anxiety right before each one and say I am not trying out but with my mom by my side and pushing myself to do something I know I was good at, I was able to do it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Some advice I would give someone wanting to be where I am today is to never give up no matter what. It is a basic thing to say but it goes a long way. Never giving up to me is not letting your fear get the best of you, being able to try new things without being forced, and setting goals for yourself that you continue to set till you get it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I see myself finished with college and starting to find a job with a BSN. Living in my own apartment with my dog Bear and starting to find my way.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity that was not in my nomination is swimming in the pool with my family. I really enjoy being with my family and swimming in the pool.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
A not so hidden talent that I have is being able to do my right and left slips. Other than that I can not think of an actual hidden talent.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things that are on my bucket list is to go anyway out of the country, buy myself a car, and to live out of Texas. These are some of the main things.

Who do you find inspiring?
Someone I find inspiring is my mom. She did not get the opportunities I got, had to grow up fast, and has been through so much. She continues to work hard everyday for the extra things she wants to give my family. She has never given up on anyone, she is my best friend, and I love her so much.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Something about me that inspires others that has recently been told to me, is how positive I am and my leadership skills. I try my best to not let the ugly take over and be the light for someone when needed,

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would just like to thank the Inspiring Teen Magazine team for everything they have been doing and giving me this opportunity that I am very grateful for.
