Photography by Olivia Henry Photography

What would you like to talk about?
Something that has been a big impact in my life is my transfer to Byron Nelson High School. Had I not taken the Biomedical Sciences Academy here, I would be at a different school, and I would not have met many of my current friends and peers. A big factor in my success and happiness is owed to this school and program. I am grateful to God for placing me here.

Tell us about the Biomedical Academy you attend at your school.
The Biomedical Sciences Academy is a 4-year program for extremely serious students that are academically driven and want to be challenged as they explore biological sciences. Academy students must be hardworking and ready to face any challenge head-on. As a result of steadfast work throughout the program, students can graduate high school with their CCMA or EMT plus EKG certifications after passing the course and exam. While these same certifications can be obtained through a normal health-science pathway, it is the discipline and depth of the Biomedical Sciences Academy that sets us apart.

What interests you most about the medicine field?
What interests me most about the medical field is the diversity of patients and their diagnoses.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class this year is CMA. The most interesting thing I have learned so far is how to perform CPR and use an AED, which earned me my Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

What are you hoping to do with a medical degree?
With a medical degree, I am planning to pursue nursing with a specialty in pediatric oncology.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
In my senior year, I most look forward to Prom because I get to wear a beautiful dress and spend time with my friends dancing the night away.

What will you miss most about high school?
The thing I will miss most about high school is the events, such as pep rallies and dress up days.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am involved in my youth group at church. I am very passionate about serving God. In today's society, it can be hard to be a teen living for Christ due to the number of bad influences. I do my best to surround myself with other God-loving people so that I can be the good in other's lives.

What do you love most about your youth group?
What I love most about my youth group is the people. They always make me feel special.

What are some of the things you do together?
Some of the things that I do with my youth group is attend summer camp every year. We sometimes go out to eat together or play games after service

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am on fire for Jesus! I am so thankful to God for all of the blessings in my life. I could go on and on about the intricacy of the world around us and the wonderful loving Father who created it.

Tell us more about your love for Jesus.
Jesus, the son of God, paid the ultimate sacrifice. He gave His life so that we may all live eternally in Heaven. Jesus taught us that loving one another is one of the most important things that we can do with our life. As a Christian, I try hard every day to be more like Jesus, bearing fruits of the spirit such as patience and faithfulness, as well as many others. "We love Him because He first loved us" -1 John 4:19. If you are reading this and are not a follower of Christ, I encourage you to read the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found Olivia through a friend of mine who was on the rep team before me. I have had a great experience being on Team 25. Although I had no experience, Olivia has taught me how to express myself through different poses, making each session fun and easy. What I love most is feeling like a super model!

What do you do in Team 25?
In Team 25, I do model calls and photo sessions with the overall goal of promoting Olivia Henry Photography.

What has been your favorite day with Olivia?
My favorite day with Olivia was the day we did the Dallas Haus shoot. I felt so elegant and had a great time shooting.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it, you would find me in one of two places. If I am feeling energetic, I would be in the studio dancing until I drop. If I am feeling more laid back, however, you could find me in my room indulging in my favorite show, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am looking forward to graduating with my CCMA and EKG certifications, as well as attending a university to get my bachelor's degree. I have thought about rushing in a sorority, which would be an exciting new chapter in my life. I've got a long future ahead of me, so I'm taking it day by day and living my life to the fullest.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
One of the hardest things I have accomplished would have to be when I got my wisdom teeth out. I was so nervous, and I have a very low pain tolerance which made things a lot more painful. It took a week or two of recovery, but I finally healed completely! I just had to remind myself that the pain would subside eventually, and I had to distract myself from the fact that I looked like a chipmunk!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
It sounds cliche, but never give up. When things get rough, look towards your support and think about the reward and the outcome. You got this!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I will hopefully have my bachelor's degree in nursing or a similar field and be starting my work as a Pediatric nurse.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I can't imagine life without shopping, and I also enjoy playing Roblox with my friends whenever I get the chance!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can do the worm!

3 things on your bucket list
Go to Japan, get another cat, and learn Korean.

Who do you find inspiring?
I am heavily inspired by my youth pastors Mark and Luke, as well as Mark's wife, Ashlea. They have supported me for as long as I can remember, and they are always there when I need them.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that my passion for the things I do is inspiring. Whether it be dance, church, or school, I always put my best foot forward and work hard while doing what I love.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am so honored to have the chance to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine. This has been a one-of-a-kind experience and I am beyond grateful for all of the support and votes I have received since gaining this opportunity.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is maintaining respect and integrity while guiding others by example.

How would others describe you as a leader?
I’ve been described as patient, kind, and helpful while mentoring students in ASL and teen girls at the community league park.

What do you like to do with your friends?
My friends and I enjoy playing pickleball, tubing on the lake, watching movies, cruising the roads while jamming to our favorite music, going to concerts, and cheering each other as we play different sports.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am dedicated to building strong community bonds, particularly by embracing and celebrating the deaf community through ASL. This serves to be inclusive and foster mutual respect. Engaging in softball, actively participating in various community functions and charitable endeavors bring me immense joy. Furthermore, I cherish farm life and enjoy sharing the experience with those in my community.

What led you to your interest in ASL?
I’ve loved ASL since I was a child and was excited when my high school was the first in our area to offer it as a foreign language. After meeting the ASL instructor, who is deaf, we instantly clicked and have an amazing bond. Her impact on my life has generated my desire to continue learning ASL in college with a future goal to be an interpreter at public events including courtrooms, concerts, etc.

What do you wish others knew about the deaf community?
People of the deaf community are real humans with feelings and aren’t always mute and uneducated. Don’t avoid them because they communicate differently. Instead, write a note or attempt to gesture to them. Including the deaf community will bring more smiles and happiness to the world while expanding an individual’s knowledge.

Tell us about your softball career.
I began playing softball at our community league park in 7th grade and advanced to being a leader of our high school softball team. I love volunteering with the Challenger league for the disabled along with mentoring other teens playing softball at the community park where I began my softball journey.

What position do you play and why does it suit you?
I typically play in the Outfield and enjoy making diving plays to rob the opponent of scoring!

What is a favorite accomplishment in softball?
My favorite accomplishment in softball is when our high school team won State in 2023 with a winning streak of over 40 games in a row. In addition, last season I hit a homerun against our local rival team.

What has been your favorite charitable endeavor and why?
“Christmas for Kids” is my favorite charity! For years, I’ve cherished being a servant in our community and seeing the young kids smile when they receive the gifts. It’s humbling to see the impact this event has on our rural community while providing coats and gloves, food, games, pictures with Santa, decorating cookies, coloring contests, fruit baskets, and gifts for the children. It’s beautiful to witness local volunteers in our community joining together to ensure a brighter holiday season for many families.

What else would you like to talk about?
Family time and exploring the world are important in my life. I cherish working on the farm, from bottle-feeding calves and baling hay to canning vegetables, fishing, hunting, and spending countless hours listening to historical family stories. I’ve been able to immerse myself in diverse cultures amongst my travels. Another key to my happiness is snuggling my dogs and enjoying breeding Goldendoodles. I attribute my success to the incredible mentors in my life. Beyond family, I've developed a strong bond with an exceptional ASL instructor, from whom I continue to learn from daily.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
American Sign Language (ASL) is passionate to me as it allows expressive communication through hand gestures. ASL continues to improve my understanding and interactions with the Deaf community. I chose ASL as my foreign language and my teacher continues to be my biggest inspiration. For instance, recently I interacted with a gentleman who began writing a note and I quickly gestured in ASL. To his surprise, he smiled and was amazed that we could communicate fluidly. This genuine joy is attributed to my mentor. As a senior now, I’m a teacher’s assistant for her ASL class.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Elizabeth is located in Dunlap, the town where I was born and many family members remain. She’s amazing and continually captures beautiful photographs along with giving back to our community by providing free senior sessions to those who can’t afford them along with donating her work for charitable auctions. She’s highly sought after in our rural community.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had a full day to live it up, I’d choose either non-stop roller coasters, an amazing concert at a new venue, on the lake with my friends, or loving livestock and fishing at the farm.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Going to college and exploring new adventures.

3 Things on your bucket list:
1. Skydiving
2. Travel to all 50 states
3. Fly to France and visit the Eiffel tower

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Growing up in an extremely musical family, my passion for music easily sparked. I loved to sing and even attempted to write songs, but later I found my love for playing piano. I began piano lessons around 15 years old, but the late start didn’t hold me back. I worked endlessly on my own time to catch up on the many years I missed, and thankfully that has gotten me to where I am today. Playing in both my church’s Youth and Main Worship Teams, allows my love for worshiping the Lord to encourage others to worship Him, too.

What else would you like to talk about?
Serving in my church has not only shown me the true love of God, and my love for serving people, but also it has directed a path for my life after I graduate high school. I plan to attend college and get a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. With this degree I will strive to help and serve others while displaying God’s love and giving Him all the glory.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Something I know I could talk nonstop about is my Savior, Jesus Christ. There are so many words I wish I could say, but the one point I am determined to get across is how I owe it all to Him. Through all of my achievements, many hardships have followed, but I know for a fact that without Him I would not be where I am today. I have faced many mental struggles recently, but through His steadfast love and grace I have received His joy that helps me shine light on others experiencing what I did.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
One of my friends that I have known and loved since Preschool became a Representative for Alice McLain Photography. I absolutely loved all of McLain’s photos and my friend encouraged me to use her for my senior pictures. My experience was very encouraging and enjoyable, and I adored how McLain went all out for me and my pictures. I appreciated all the uplifting words she said while taking my photos. They boosted my confidence and really made my genuine smile appear. The thing I loved most about having her as my photographer was that she made me feel comfortable in front of a camera. I went into the photo shoot with no experience, but that didn’t matter. She helped me know how to pose while making the whole session feel natural and easy.

What is a favorite accomplishment in soccer?
The first year I ever played soccer we had a tournament scheduled on my birthday. I was ecstatic for this tournament because I knew I’d get to play in it. The day of the tournament, not only did I get to play for the first time ever, but I also scored my first goal. I will never forget that goal and how it proved to me that my hard work wasn’t for nothing.

What do you love most about being in the Brookland Select Chamber Singers Choir?
In the Chamber Singers Choir, I have had the amazing opportunity to learn more about singing and music theory. Learning how to actually sing in a choir is one of the coolest elements of choir because of how beautiful it makes the everyone sound as a whole. Learning music theory is not only beneficial in choir, but also helps with my piano skills.

What does it mean to be on the Youth Leadership Team at Nettleton Baptist Church?
To be on the Youth Leadership Team at Nettleton Baptist Church means that you get to set a Christ-like example for the other students while also spreading God’s love and truth. As a leader you also have the privilege to be that young voice in the church that speaks up for the rest of the student ministry.

What service projects have you done?
In Dallas, I have helped pass out food in a food kitchen for the homeless along with cleaning and organizing the clothes closet and shower houses connected to the food kitchen. After a hurricane in Louisiana, I helped clean up debris and I also passed out food to people who lost their homes in the hurricane.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
In my senior year, I am most looking forward to making the most of it all. This being my last year of high school, and being the last year I’ll see some of my friends, I want to make as many memories as possible. I want to be able to have fond memories to look back at in years from now rather than wish that I did more during my high school years.

Grace Jackson

Grace Jackson – Florida
Nomination by Nora Khalilian
Photography by Marliese Marie
Issue 83 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Grace Jackson is the most driven person and loving person I know. I'm constantly in awe of how she's always smiling and trying to help others when she could help herself. She joined a debate nonprofit and worked as a free coach when she would have made money since she’s recognized as a world-class debater. She started an initiative called Bake it Forward which provides baked goods for domestic violence victims. Within minutes of being in a building, people are talking about her. She's the kind of woman you admire and the kind you want to be friends with.

Photography by Marliese Marie

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I greatly expanded my high school debate team. In my freshman year, my team had amazing captains but lacked national exposure. One captain in particular, Zakaria Zeini, showed me how impactful a captain could be. Inspired by his leadership, I started competing nationally with only the support of My Coaches( Bordelon, Mrs. Ollweiler) and my mom. In just over a year I went from unknown to ranked in the top ten debaters in the country for the first time in my school’s history. More importantly, as a current captain, I make sure everyone has the support to succeed.

What is the most interesting thing you've debated?
Any legislation concerning foreign aid to other countries, specifically Haiti. It’s eye-opening to research different countries because we often take for granted necessities we can easily access. Learning about how the United States gives foreign aid, as well as how that aid affects the receiving country inspired me to research further. I’m thankful debate makes you research a wide variety of topics so I’m well versed on United States and International Affairs.

What is something about debate that people might not realize?
It takes a lot of hard work but is very worth it. I debate frequently on the national circuits which means I travel on weekends to compete in other states. Tournaments often last the entire weekend so I’ve had to make sacrifices to debate so often but I wouldn't trade it for the world. My event is called congressional debate and we debate legislation similar to real congress.  For national tournaments, I often prepare anywhere between 20 and 40 speeches per tournament over two weeks. It's a lot of work but it pays off. I’ve met some of my closest friends through debate and gained so many new experiences. My friends Jayden, Nick, Nora, Heidi, Ankit, Theo, Luke, Brian, Jerry and Taylor have redefined what it means to be a supportive friend and I’m very grateful.  I’ve also gotten to meet wonderful people like Mr. Abraham López- the president of the Florida Debate Initiative- and work with Mr. Adam Jacobi who runs the Harvard debate camp. Debate opened up doors I never even thought to explore. Every person I’ve met has provided me invaluable insights into not just debate but also my future career.

What is your best advice as a debate coach?
Be yourself. It sounds simple but it's far too often students have an idealized image of what a debater should look like and try to change themselves to be like them. The way to win debate tournaments is to stand out. There’s only one you so the best way to stand out is to bring your own personality and unique voice into every speech you give. I’d also tell new debaters to always care about the issues they talk about. In congressional debate, we debate topics that affect real people like minimum wages, foreign aid, and tax cuts. You never know who has lived through what we’re speaking about so it's very important not to trivialize people’s trauma. Furthermore, speeches given in a mock chamber can change minds about legislation. I’ve personally had people express to me that I was able to shift their perspective on an issue, and for me, that’s what debate is all about- exploring and sharing new perspectives.

What else would you like to talk about?
The initiative I started with my family: Bake it Forward. We’re domestic violence survivors and used to live at a Safehouse, which is a homeless shelter specifically for domestic violence survivors. Seven years later we are thriving but that wouldn’t be possible without the love and support of the ladies at Safehouse. So we decided to give back. The joy of baking was something that always brought the women together, yet sweets were in short supply. Bake it Forward is our initiative where we collaborate with local bakeries, and make baked goods to recreate that sense of community.

What led you to create Bake it Forward?
Me and my family used to live at a homeless shelter for domestic violence victims called Safehouse. So many organizations provided everything from diapers to silverware but one thing that was always in short supply was baked goods. One day my family had a cake mix and decided to bake a cake but we didn’t have the ingredients. The head of Safehouse went over the intercom and asked who had ingredients like butter or milk. The women came out of their rooms and helped to bake the cake together. Once it was done all the women came out of their rooms to share a piece and it was gone within the hour. Bake it Forward is about recreating that sense of community but more importantly, fostering conversation. When everyone was sharing a treat, they began to talk about the trauma they had recently been through. On the surface Bake it Forward provides treats, but on a deeper level we create

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Ironically, I could talk forever about talking. Coming from a domestic violence household, I've learned that Silence is the most lethal weapon. As we look around the world, silence is the common denominator of inaction. Because of that, I'm passionate about the power of using our voices. On my debate team, I ensure that anyone who wants to can speak up. I speak up as a student ambassador for an anti-human trafficking organization. I speak up for minorities and debate equality. I know what it is to be silenced, now I’m the first one to speak up.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
1. My photographer is someone my family shot with before. I heard about how amazing she was and had to shoot with her!
2. My experience working with Ms. Marie was great. She had a beautiful studio with lots of natural light and music in the background. The energy she brings to any shoot she does is incredible. I felt very comfortable and confident in front of the camera while working with her. She's a perfectionist and went above and beyond to make sure every shot was beautiful.
3. My favorite part of the experience was her creativity. Ms. Marie turned my crazy ideas into beautiful photos. Her photography is a true art form. Not only that, but she's able to give me direction that vastly improved the photos while being extremely kind. I'm so very grateful I got to work with her.

What has been the most exciting thing about your senior year so far?
All the new people I’ve gotten close with. Everyone is really aware that our high school careers are about to come to an end. Because of that, a lot of previously separate friend groups started merging. I’ve had a lot of fun hanging out with people I wasn’t close with before. I’m sad to see it end but I’m so happy I was able to make new memories.

Where can we find you and your friends when you have nothing to do and all day to do it?
Probably going out then coming back to a friend's house and watching a movie. I love having fun with my friends and I’d be lying to say I’m an introvert. At the same time, I like coming back to a friend’s house after a long day and having a girls day while watching movies and doing facemasks.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
At the beach. There’s nothing like a good boat day with friends and then going to dinner after tanning. When I have time I enjoy living in the moment.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I’m excited about college applications. It’s a scary process for sure but I’m interested to see where the journey takes me!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Winning the John R. Lewis Medal. Aside from being a difficult award to win, my school had never produced a national finalist before so I set the goal for myself and was thrilled to be able to achieve it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't give up. It sounds cliche but seriously you have no idea how many doors you can open yourself by simply being persistent.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself in a big city. I’m going to explore different careers during my college career so while I don’t know what profession I’ll be, I know I’ll be doing non-profit work.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Working out and trying new recipes. Lately, I’ve been loving pilates workouts and chia seed pancakes!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Not very hidden but I’m a pretty decent cook. My favorite dishes this month have been banana french toast and fettuccine alfredo.

3 Things on your bucket list
Sit front row at a Lauryn Hill and Kendrick Lamar Concert
Go to Victoria and Alberts at Disney World
Assemble flowers

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom inspiring. She’s very resilient and I couldn’t have achieved anything without her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I’m inspiring because of my willpower. I’ve been through many hardships and failures to get where I am today and it wasn’t easy but I never gave up.

Bailey Scheel – Florida
Nomination by Pam Scheel
Photography by Darris Hartman
Issue 83 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Bailey Scheel is inspiring because of her dedication to her community and the platform she’s developed. As the holder of multiple pageant titles, both at the local (Miss Fort Walton Beach) and national (Miss American Heritage) levels, she gives many hours to community service. On top of that, she developed her own platform for faith-based mental health awareness and suicide prevention called “Hope Through Him”. She currently has a social media page for this platform and is working to organize an event for teens throughout Okaloosa county. All in all, that is why I feel Bailey is an inspiring teen.

Tell us about your community and why it's important to you?
The community you’re raised in shapes the person you become, and my community is a beautiful beach town in the panhandle of Florida. I’m the 4th generation of my family to live in Fort Walton Beach, so I can confidently say the community is my family, and the town is my home.

Tell us about your pageant career.
My pageant career started towards the end of my 7th grade year, just a few months into the pandemic. I honestly entered my first pageant because of a lack of other things to do, and I had no idea I’d end up where I am now. I am forever thankful for the life skills pageants have taught me and the family I’ve made throughout my pageant journey.

What title do you hold dearest to your heart and why?
I would definitely say my current title of Miss American Heritage. This is my first national level title, and I love everything the system stands for. They emphasize the importance of public speaking, interview skills, and giving back to your hometown through volunteer work.

What is something about pageants that people might not realize?
There are countless misconceptions when it comes to pageants, but the most common would be that it’s all about looks. While there definitely are some systems that focus more on outward appearances, many are based solely on inner beauty and key life skills. With competition phases such as interview and on-stage questions, it is clear that pageant girls are more than a pretty face.

What are some of the community service projects you have participated in?
I volunteer at a multitude of church events such as Vacation Bible School, seasonal events like the pumpkin patch, and singing in the contemporary worship band. I also love being a part of putting together pageants, daddy daughter dances, and the local children’s clothing project.

Which has been your favorite and why?
My favorite way to give back would be volunteering at an Episcopal summer camp called Camp Beckwith. I have been a junior counselor at this camp since my freshman year, and was a camper there since the 3rd grade. I love being able to make camp fun for all of the kids the same way the leaders did for me when I was a camper.

Tell us more about Hope Through Him.
I started Hope Through Him because I know that mental health is a serious issue in today’s world, especially with teens. I hope to change people’s lives through God’s word, and I know this platform has the potential to do so.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Aside from my platform, Hope Through Him, I’m active in my community in various other ways. I’m in various clubs at my school, such as National Honor Society, Music Honors, Hope Squad, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Madrigals, and Link Crew Leadership. I also hold my schools pageant title, Miss Choctawhatchee, my city’s pageant title, Miss City Of Fort Walton Beach, and a national title, Miss American Heritage. Through pageantry, I am constantly putting my public speaking, interview skills, and volunteer work into action. I think it’s important to give back to your community because they do a lot for you.

What has been a leadership opportunity you've excelled in, and how?
I am a leader at my school, Choctawhatchee High School, through Link Crew. Link Crew is a freshman mentoring system and leadership class that you can only join through nomination and completing the application process. Being selected to be a Link Crew member was a great feeling and now, my senior year, I hold the position of Historian. As the Historian, I run our Instagram page to keep everyone up to date on what’s happening at Choctaw. I take pride in my role as a Link Crew leader and hope to leave a lasting impression on the freshmen class.

What else would you like to talk about?
I also have a passion for singing that I hope to pursue in my future. I plan on attending college in Florida to study child psychology, but always want to continue singing on the side. Singing is a gift that has the power to make others happy, and that’s a beautiful thing.

What has made you choose child psychology and what do you hope to do with your degree?
I always knew I wanted to be in a job where I was directly helping others, but I don’t do blood or needles, so the medical field was definitely out of the question. As I got older, I realized I was good at talking to people and problem solving for my friends. This led me to psychology. I specifically would want to work with children because I am naturally good with kids and enjoy being around them.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I’m extremely passionate about my faith. As a high school student, stress and anxiety are no stranger to my daily life, but knowing there is a plan for me and my future offers indescribable peace. This feeling of peace is exactly what I hope to bring to other struggling teens through my platform.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I actually didn’t have to “find” my photographer because she is a family-friend. She has been taking pictures of me and my family since I was little, so it was a very full circle moment to be taking my senior pictures with her. My experience was great, she gave excellent directions and the final images were all amazing. My favorite part was how she was able to truly capture who I am as a person in the images.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
The beach! Growing up in Florida, I always seemed to take the beach for granted, but now as a teenager there is nothing I find more peaceful than sitting on the beach and listening to the waves while I read my Bible.

Tell us about your 4.0 and the good habits you've acquired to maintain it.
Going in as a freshman in high school I did not worry much about my grades and my GPA. However, when I entered high school and learned about college requirements, I started to take school more seriously. I try to do my best in every class to maintain an A by studying, turning my work in on time, and doing my homework. Although it has been difficult to remain digilent with my work, I have been able to maintain a 4.0 since I was a freshman because of my ambitious work ethic.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class that I am taking this year is PCT. It is a health science class that encourages students to learn more about the medical field by allowing students to participate in clinicals, shadow different doctors, and practice medical skills. This class is so interesting because we learn something new every day from all aspects of the medical field. By December we will be able to get certified with our Patient Care Technician license, which will lead the way for students to receive an internship at a hospital.

What work do you do at the boutique and what have you learned about yourself doing that job?
At my boutique, I am a sales associate who undergoes many tasks. My main job is to provide excellent customer service by assisting the customers in finding their sizes, checking them out, and getting them a dressing room. I also merchandise, backstock, organize inventory, and help promote the company. Working at J.lbk has helped me grow as a person by becoming more outgoing and hard-working.

What is the hardest part about being a lifeguard that people might not realize?
As a lifeguard, it can be difficult to stay alert and be responsible for so many lives. Lifeguards have to be aware of everything that is happening around you. It's hard to focus on multiple people at one time because you want to be sure to be ready in case an emergency arises. Some may believe that lifeguards just sit around and tan, but lifeguards really do have to go through intense training and proper certification to be able to do what they do.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I am the daughter of Matt and Jami Winfield. Additionally, I am the sister of Cole and Weston. Growing up with only brothers has made me very independent and strong-willed. We are a very close knit family who enjoy doing everything together. I stand out by being the only daughter and taking on a caring and selfless role within my family.

What do you and your family like to do to have fun together?
One of the ways me and my family like to have fun together is going to our ranch. We love to spend time outdoors hunting, riding four wheelers, and shooting. Our ranch is a very special place where we can all relax and spend quality time with each other.

What is your friend group like and where can we most often find you, and doing what?
My friend group is very diverse with all of our personalities. I am more of a calm introverted person within the group, whereas my other friends are extroverted and always coming up with things for us to do. We all became friends because of softball, and even though three of us don’t play anymore, we are all still so close. We all love to get together and have small dinner parties for different occasions throughout the year.

What service projects have you participated in and which was your favorite? Why?
Some service projects that I have been involved in include helping with various events at my school, I have helped my church serve the homeless shelter food, and helped build a wheelchair ramp for a disabled person with the Texas Ramps Organization. My favorite project is when we built the wheelchair ramp because it was so rewarding seeing the homeowner’s face when we were finished.

What is leadership style and what is your strongest leadership quality?
I lead more by example than I do vocally. As a quiet leader my actions show more than what I believe my voice does. My strongest leadership quality is my resilience. When I am upset or under pressure, I always try to stay positive and calm to get the task done.

What would you like us to know about your relationship with God?
As an eight year old, I decided to give my life to Christ. As a seventeen year old, I can admit that I am far from perfect, but I still strive to live my life with Jesus as the center of it. I have had my troubles and doubts; however, I am reminded time and time again that Jesus is greater and he has a plan for each and every one of us. As a Christian, I have also become a more loving person who tries to see the good in others.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very involved with my school clubs and organizations. I am the Committee Head of our Future Health Professionals (HOSA) organization, as well as an active member in Spanish Club, National Honor Society, and Student Council. Each of these organizations lead students to become leaders by elevating a culture of scholarship, service, and character. I have had great experiences as a member in these clubs by being able to participate in school activities and develop community engagement. Furthermore, I have participated in over 50 hours of volunteer opportunities with these organizations.

What else would you like to talk about?
In addition to being very involved with school activities, I also have many other hobbies that include hunting, playing pickleball, shopping, working, and spending time outdoors.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am most passionate about helping others, and I am excited to pursue the medical field in the future. Currently, I am taking a PCT class at my high school to hopefully get my Patient Care Technician Certification by the time I graduate. During this process, I will be able to shadow nurses and doctors and learn more about healthcare. I enjoy talking with others and learning about the medical field because of the impact it can have on someone's life.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I met Hayly my freshman year when she took my varsity softball pictures. Then, I learned that she was the photography teacher at our school. She has taken many of my friend's pictures in the past, and they have always turned out so great, so I knew I wanted her to eventually take my senior pictures. When taking my pictures, Hayly made it so fun and relaxed. My favorite part about the shoot was first showing Hayly the location, because I knew she would love it.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day, I would be found at home watching Gilmore Girls with a cup of coffee in my hand. It is rare when I have nothing to do, but when I do get free time, I make sure to spend it doing something comforting and relaxing.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
In less than a year I will be in a freshman in college, and although I am still nervous about it, I am also super excited. I cannot wait to graduate and start focusing on my future career, and how I am going to succeed in the time ahead. Being a senior is such an exciting time, and I am so grateful for all of the amazing experiences, as well as all of the experiences to come in college.

What do you love most about your school and the people in it?
The thing I love most about my school is how dedicated the staff is to our academics. The teachers go above and beyond to ensure that we receive a comprehensive education, preparing us thoroughly for the future. Additionally, the students at my school are incredibly supportive, always ready to lend a hand to those in need.

Why are good grades important to you?
Good grades will get me to where I want to be in life. I believe that if I make all the right choices and try as hard as I can in school, I will be able to give the people around me, along with myself, the best life possible.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
This year my favorite class is Forensic Science. The most interesting things I've learned about are the many different criminal cases. So far, my favorite case was the case of Helle Craft.

What instrument do you play in marching band and why does it suit you?
In marching band, I play the Alto Saxophone. I typically play the Tenor Saxophone, but I’m on the front rank this year. Aesthetically, the Alto Saxophone just looks better against my short stature.

What is something about being in a marching band that other people may not realize?
Marching band is much more difficult than many people might think. For example, everyone has to be in sync while doing challenging maneuvers. Not to mention that practicing in the hot Texas heat can be hard. It isn’t uncommon for band members to become physically ill. It isn’t for everyone, but I’ve made some great memories.

What is a symphonic band and why do you love it?
At my school there are three levels of band. Symphonic Band is the middle level. Symphonic Band is a large ensemble that includes percussion, wind instruments, and brass instruments. I enjoy Symphonic Band because I get to enjoy playing music without the stress of dealing with solo music competitions, which are required for members of the highest level band.

What is your favorite memory with your symphonic bandmates?
Honestly, I don’t have a specific “favorite” memory, but I have enjoyed developing close friendships with other people in the Tenor Saxophone section.

What is your favorite music piece in jazz band?
I’ve just started Jazz Band this year, but so far my favorite piece is “Away in a Manger.”

What is a favorite accomplishment in jazz band?
So far, my favorite accomplishment is earning the lead Alto Saxophone spot and, as a result, being given all of the difficult solos.

What is the Band Council and what are your roles and responsibilities as a member? Nederland High School Band Council members represent the band for the Good Sportsmanship League. While we don’t have many responsibilities, we are also responsible for choosing a band member of the week, or as we call it - “Band Child.”

Tell us about the awards you've won.
Most of the awards I have earned were art awards which include the 2022 Nederland City Council PTA Reflections Award of Excellence, 2022 Texas PTA Reflections Award of Excellence, 2023 Nederland City Council PTA Reflections Award of Excellence for Nederland High School, 2023 Stark Museum Juried Art Exhibit Featured Artist, 2023 Nederland ISD Christmas Card Design Contest winner, and Honorable Mention in the Museum of the Gulf Coast 9th Annual Art & Photography Contest.

What led you to start your own business and what makes you successful?
One day in 8th grade, while I was in my History class, I was called down to the office by my principal. I was so nervous, thinking that I was in trouble. In actuality, she wanted to know if I would be interested in working a face-painting job the following weekend for a friend of hers. I had never done it before, but I figured it was worth a try. After trying it out, I realized that face-painting was an easy way to earn income for me. Aside from face-painting, I’ve also added custom art as part of my business. I think what makes me successful is that my services are affordable and I’m willing to work with and for a diverse group of people. I usually book new jobs through recommendations of people I’ve previously worked for. That’s the best compliment!

What is the best part of owning your own business?
The best part of owning my own business is that I have flexible hours. As a busy high school student, working a regular part-time job isn’t really something that fits into my schedule right now. I also enjoy getting to meet new people and seeing how happy the kids are when I’m finished with their face-paint design. Even when I’m not exactly pleased with the outcome, kids always seem to be excited about the finished product.

What events have you volunteered at?
I’ve volunteered at lots of places and in different capacities, including: Beaumont Pets Alive, Adopt a Beach, the Port Arthur Hospitality Center, the Port Arthur ISD Registration Festival, a SETX Circle of Hope Cancer Benefit, and the Port Arthur Health Department’s “Spill the Tea” event.

Which is your favorite and why?
I’ve enjoyed each of my volunteering experiences, but my favorite event was probably the SETX Circle of Hope Cancer Benefit. It was wonderful to see the community come together to organize an amazing event to help one of our own. Everyone was extremely kind. I would definitely volunteer for them again, if given the opportunity.

Why did you choose a career in psychology?
As someone who has suffered with anxiety and depression for much of my life, I can attest to the benefits of seeking treatment. I’ve met some amazing people who have helped me through this journey, from doctors to counselors. It is my hope that I can one day do the same for other people experiencing the same challenges that I’ve dealt with.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I found my love for twirling in 8th grade and started classes at Inside Out Twirling Studio in Port Neches, Texas. Even though I began later than others, I earned "Rookie of the Year” at the end of my first year. Alongside twirling, I've battled anxiety and depression, using counseling to help me cope. Every day has its challenges, but I face them head-on, growing stronger and better in both twirling and life.

What else would you like to talk about?
I’m obsessed with cats, and I’ve personally rescued each one I have. My first rescue, Winslow, is still super special to me. Back in middle school, I volunteered with Beaumont Pets Alive, a non-profit that saves animals. It was such an amazing experience—I learned how to vaccinate pets, help with surgeries, and even microchip animals. Volunteering there taught me so much and really fueled my passion for animal rescue.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I'm all about helping others, being kind, and keeping healthy boundaries. I believe showing compassion can make a big difference, and I try to bring that positive energy to everyone around me. But I also know how important it is to set boundaries—for myself and others—to keep relationships balanced and healthy. I aim to live thoughtfully, making sure I’m there for people while still respecting my own needs and values.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I got involved with Tishy Photography through my mom, who found out about the “Tishy Model Team” (TMT) from other moms on Facebook. Being part of TMT has been amazing. Tishy is super caring and dedicated to her team, creating a positive and supportive environment. She encourages us to be role models and to give back to our community. This experience has been really rewarding for me and fits with my values and passions.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You’d find me in bed, ASLEEP! There is rarely a day when I have nothing to do, so I take advantage of those times when I can. I also really like to hang out with my boyfriend and my friends in my free time.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I’m really excited about the Homecoming dance! I love getting dressed up and, you guessed it…hanging out with my boyfriend and friends!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was pushing through my anxiety, which can often be debilitating, to successfully accomplish my goals. My anxiety often prevents me from putting myself out there, but I’ve come a long way in the last couple of years and I hope to continue seeing more and more improvement within myself. As I previously mentioned, I’m truly grateful for the help I’ve received to work through my struggles.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Just stay focused on your goal and don’t get distracted by what peers are doing around you.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I hope to be finishing up my Bachelor’s Degree and applying for my Master’s program.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love watching true crime documentaries!

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I’m inspiring because I’m self-motivated, driven, and I don’t allow others to influence who I am or what I stand for.

I don’t like being the center of attention so I was a little nervous going into my photo shoot. Erinn is very professional but keeps it fun. I felt relaxed during the shoot with her and will always recommend her to everyone. Erinn Letts is amazing!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to be spontaneous for new things I have an opportunity for! For example I’ve done Dance, powerlifting, volleyball, track, basketball, Mariachi and now I’m doing Color guard for the end of my senior year! Never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You might find something your passionate about.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have lots of hobbies, painting, playing the guitar and Ukulele, singing, dancing, scrap booking, travel, and many more! I love going out with friends or even out of town with my mom, anytime it’s just us we always go shopping and stop at Taco Bell because it is my favorite fast food place!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
God, only because ever since I’ve grown closer to him and his son Jesus, my life has been at peace. I love to talk about my testimony to others in hopes that it may help them want a relationship with God like I do.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer when I was in her womb, she found me! Then it all started from the day I was born. I didn’t like to take pictures when I was younger, but the more she takes pictures of me the more I started gaining confidence and be a natural subject for her! I loved this picture because I was being my true self, confident, and making my mom (my photographer) laugh.

Tell us about your dance career. When did you get started and what did you love most about it?
When I was in Dance I started when I was in 7th grade. I joined with my friend Rosa, because we both loved to dance so much when we were younger! I love it so much! Being able to dance and perform in front of people to be a show off was the best feeling ever! I loved it more when I got to dance beside my friend, Rosa.

What was your routine like with powerlifting?
It was my junior year that I first started powerlifting. I trained earlier before the time came for powerlifting season. My Tio was my personal coach and also my good friend Andrew who taught me techniques and lots more to understanding what it takes to be a powerlifter. Every week, it was staying after school, go to the weight room, practice lifting weights, figuring out your max, and getting stronger.

What did you learn about yourself in the process?
I learned so much more about myself, as I grew older and older, I grew mature, humble, confident, and I grew so much love. I learned I can be my own person and it doesn’t matter what other people think. I’ll always be the girl that can stick out from the crowd from just being ‘different’, not just different, myself.

What was a favorite memory with your volleyball team?
Volleyball was intense, but I had goo moments with my team and I. I think my favorite memory I had, was probably when I made my first point for the team. Another I just remembered was when I lead off with prayer for our team to win our first game, and we did.

What was your favorite accomplishment with track?
My coaches put me in unbelievable races that I knew I wasn’t ready for, but one coach we call ‘mama’, she told me “your the only person that tries, so your going to run it.” That made me smile and I will never forget her words. She wanted me to run the 800 mile race. I didn’t get first place, but I was able to finish it without stopping, thats was my best accomplishment.

What position did you play in basketball and why did it suit you?
I can’t remember what position I played, since it was a sport I wanted to try out for fun! I was a decent player and tried my best to be a good player.

What was your most memorable moment in Mariachi?
Doing Mariachi was the best choice I ever made, I learned how to play guitar because of that class! Now I can play all sorts of songs! My memorable moment was the first performance we had on stage and I had to sing. I remember afterwards I felt like I was glowing and gaining more confidence in myself when it comes to standing in front of a crowd.

What made you decide to do Color guard and what is the best part about it?
Funny story, I never thought I would do color guard ever in my life! My two friends convinced me to join and I saw it as a new opportunity to learn something new! The best part about being part of this, is making new memories before we finish high school.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
I’m looking forwards to so many things my senior year! Like my senior trip, activities, programs, and just making new memories! I’m most excited for prom, I’ve never been to prom before. I want to make the most out of it as best as I can!

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
That’s a hard question, I don’t think I can leave behind anything. I can’t even think of one. If I did want to leave behind a legacy it’ll always just stick by be, why? Because it made me to the person I am today.

What will you try next?
I’m a very spontaneous person, I love to try everything! Any opportunities I get I would try! If I did have to pick one thing to try, I want to find a dance studio to keep my dancing skills in check! It sounds funny but, when I get older, I want to be that girl who may look old but I will always have a young soul.

What do you like to paint pictures of and what type of paints do you use?
Most of my painting comes from the top of my head, or I look up ideas on Pinterest and add things in to become a work of art! I also love drawing clouds and stars, I’m learning how to paint portraits at the moment! I use any kind of paint I can get my hands on and work with it as I let my mind and my hands do the work.

Do you have a favorite go-to song to play on the guitar?
I always play ‘Dandelions’ by Ruth B and sing.

How did you learn to play the Ukulele?
I learned how to play the ukulele, thanks to YouTube!

What is your favorite genre of music to sing?
I sing a lot of different genres of music. It’s hard to choose! Though, I always listen to R&B songs from back in the early 2000s or so, then going up to 2010.

What are your favorite things to scrapbook?
Being creative and using my imagination is my favorite thing to do on my scrapbook, including being decorative.

Where would you like to travel to next and why?
That’s a hard question, I want to travel everywhere! Maybe, I would like to travel to Italy since I love pasta!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find all over the place, a lot of times when people call or text me I’m always out of the house going shopping, going to te movies, hanging out with friends, being with family, or just anything! I’m almost like Waldo from ‘Where’s Waldo?’

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Graduated high school is definitely something I’m excited for! Finally seeing my mom watching me graduate and telling her ‘mom, I made it. You helped me grow to be where I’m at now.’ I’m excited to cry with her with happy tears on each other’s faces as we hug.

3 Things on your bucket list
My three things on my bucket list are, going to a Bruno Mars or Ariana Grande Concert, Go to a Disney Park, and finally starting a business.

Photography by Seniors by Vaughanadora
Issue 83 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Destiny, who is Miss Carrizo Springs, is deeply involved in her town. Her responsibilities include participating in community activities, visiting nursing homes, having coffee with elderly residents, and attending local events. As a dedicated student, she consistently earns A and B honor roll status and excels as a student athlete, competing in softball and track, where she has won medals. Destiny is always ready to lend a hand, positively impacting both her school and community. Personally, I find her to be one of the sweetest, kindest, most loving, and passionate individuals I know.

Photography by Seniors by Vaughanadora

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some inspiring qualities about me not included in my nomination are my strength and independence. Growing up with separated parents, I visited my dad every other weekend and stayed with him for a month and a half each summer, while my mom had full custody. The constant arguments during this time made me stronger. As I grew older, I taught myself to manage my hair, makeup, homework, and dress independently. When I started working, I opened a bank account, bought my own phone, and paid it off myself. I worked hard for what I wanted and handled my back-to-school shopping on my own.

What else would you like to talk about?
Something else I’d like to share is about my family. I have six siblings: three from my mom’s side and three from my dad’s side. I am the third oldest and the only girl. Even though I’m not the oldest, I often feel like I am because I would teach my two older brothers how to cook and help them with their schoolwork, despite being three and five grades below them. Whenever my brothers misbehaved, I’d get after them. They say I sounded just like our parents, ensuring they stayed out of trouble and followed the rules.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
At 10 years old, I was diagnosed with asthma after struggling to breathe during youth basketball practice with my dad. Despite medical challenges, including a heart murmur that restricted my activities, I persevered. The diagnosis initially frightened me, making me halt the sports I loved. However, after a year, I returned to the activities I was passionate about, which filled me with pride. Overcoming these health issues taught me that with belief and perseverance, I can achieve anything. My experience serves as a constant reminder to push through challenges, knowing that progress is often closer than it seems.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through friends who were part of her senior photography group last year and through Instagram. When I first met Roxann, I knew we would get along well. Her personality makes me feel comfortable, which I love most about her. In my experience, she has helped me become more confident with myself and my smile. She is easy to talk to about anything and has become like a close friend I can rely on. I never doubt the quality of my pictures with her, knowing they will always turn out great!

What community activities do you enjoy participating in?
I enjoy participating in community activities like attending and assisting with local pageant events. Additionally, I contribute by help donating and giving gifts to children in our community. These activities allow me to engage with others, support local events, and make a positive impact on the lives of children.

Which is your favorite and why?
I enjoy participating in a community event with the Dimmit County Sheriff Department, where we give out bikes and gifts to kids for Christmas. Seeing the excitement on their faces warms my heart. The kids are always so happy and grateful, even for the smallest gifts, which makes the experience fulfilling.

What do you love most about visiting nursing homes?
What I love most about visiting nursing homes is seeing the excitement on the elderly’s faces. When I sit down to talk with them, they are happy to have someone to spend time with, as some rarely get visitors. It’s heartwarming to know that a simple conversation can brighten their day and make a difference.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned from having coffee with the elderly?
The most interesting thing I've learned from having coffee with the elderly is how sensitive and similar they are to children in some ways. You have to be mindful of how you word and say things because they take everything to heart. Just like children, they appreciate kindness and care, so it's important to speak gently and thoughtfully, ensuring they feel valued and respected during conversations. Small gestures can mean a lot to them.

What local events do you enjoy attending?
I enjoy attending local events like community pep rallies, bonfires, and festivals. Each offers a chance to connect with others, making them fun and memorable experiences.

Tell us about a recent local event that is a tradition in your town that you hope never goes away.
A recent local event I hope never goes away is our town's Jamaica festival. It's a beloved tradition where people gather to celebrate, eat, play games, and enjoy rides. Kids eagerly volunteer to help and participate in the games set up for them. The festival creates a fun, vibrant atmosphere that makes for a memorable weekend, showcasing how our community comes together to enjoy and celebrate.

What is your favorite class this year and why?
My favorite class this year is career prep because it teaches me to be neater and more organized with paperwork. I’m learning how to research jobs and future plans properly, which is invaluable for my post-graduation plans. The class also helps me become more responsible for my belongings, which is a crucial skill for both my academic and future professional life.

What are you most looking forward to this year?
I’m most looking forward to graduating high school and moving to San Antonio, Texas, to pursue my dream of attending UTSA. The prospect of starting this new chapter and joining my dream college is incredibly exciting.

What is a favorite accomplishment you've had in track?
My most favorite accomplishment in track was during my junior year when I improved my 100-meter dash time from 14.46 seconds at the start of the season to 13.23 seconds by the end. This significant improvement allowed me to place in the top three for several races and finally beat my competition from the previous season. It was a rewarding experience to see my hard work and dedication finally pay off.

What position do you play in softball and why does it suit you?
I play as an all-around outfielder in softball because my speed and ability to read the ball make me well-suited for the position. My quickness helps me hustle to the ball and make important plays on the field.

What leadership roles have you had in sports?
In my sports leadership roles, I’ve taught underclassmen how to properly stretch, warm up, and prepare before races. I also focus on encouraging others to persevere, stressing that a bad start or a few mistakes don’t define their abilities. Everyone faces setbacks, but it’s important to stay confident and push through. By putting your mind and heart into it, you can overcome challenges and succeed, regardless of any initial difficulties.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is motivating and empowering those around me to achieve their best.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it, you’d find me spending quality time with my family or friends. I enjoy being around loved ones and making the most of our time together.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Something I’m really excited about is the upcoming trunk or treat event with my pageant court girls. We’ll be dressing up as Disney princesses and getting to interact with people in our community. It’s going to be a fun and memorable way to engage with everyone and bring smiles to kids’ faces.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Advice I’d give to someone aiming to reach where I am today is to never be afraid to try new things. Life has many unexpected opportunities that you might miss if you don’t take risks. Don’t let negativity or self-doubt hold you back. Instead, use challenges as motivation to push yourself further. Stay focused on your goals and prove to yourself and others that you can overcome obstacles and succeed.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself graduating college with a master’s in nursing and starting my second year in forensic psychology. My goal is to become a forensic nurse, providing specialized care to victims of violence, abuse, and sexual assault, making a meaningful impact in their lives.

3 Things on your bucket list
My top three bucket list items are exciting and meaningful to me. First, I want to visit Bora Bora because the water looks so pretty and clear, and I've always dreamed of experiencing its beauty in person. Second, I want to go scuba diving. I love the water and have always wondered what it would be like to explore underwater, seeing how things look up close. Finally, I want to visit Symmes Chapel in South Carolina. The view is stunning, and the worship services seem so peaceful and relaxing, making it a perfect spiritual getaway.

Tell us about your dance career.
I started dancing when I was two years old and this is my sixteenth year at the same studio Performing Arts Dance Academy. I am on their competitive dance team.

What do you love most about dancing?
I love that when I dance it distracts me from the life around me. I am able to create my own artistry, and dance through stress letting it all go.

What types of dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
I do all styles of dance at my studio that they offer: ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, contemporary, theater dance, hip hop, and lyrical. My favorite style of dance is jazz, because I love learning all the fun steps and love the sass. This style is so fun for me to learn as it always keeps me quick on my feet and has fun music.

What has your favorite memory been with dance?
My favorite dance memory has been the long lasting friendships I have made and learning to work as a dance team. I would see the same girls everyday after school and have known them since the very beginning. I have had many fun experiences, formed the closest friendships, and I do not regret one moment of it.

What is a favorite accomplishment you've had with dance?
My favorite and biggest accomplishment is becoming a ballet teacher and a part of the staff and family at my dance studio. For the longest time I have wanted to be a teacher and make others love dance. I am looking forward to choreographing my first dance for recital.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Natalie inspires those around her to treat others with kindness and respect. Natalie is a very friendly girl as well, and can start conversations with just about anybody. This inspires those around her because she makes everyone feel comfortable and then others match her personality.

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
My friend group from dance is very silly and fun. We like to just spend time together and go to the movies. My school friends and I are conservative and inclusive. We have fun shopping and going out to dinner.

Where would we find you and your friends on any given Saturday afternoon and what would you be doing?
Pilates and Starbucks are our early Saturday afternoon events. After that, we will most likely be at the mall.

What else would you like to talk about?
Natalie is a very easy going fun person to be around that makes all those around her match her level of energy. Natalie likes to have a good time and likes to spend time with friends and family.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My family is very small and very intimate. I fit in because I am very friendly like most of my family. I stand out because I have a big personality, and bring life to the family.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Making cookies at Christmas time at the bakery that we make every year from my grandma's recipe.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Natalie feels passionate about her family's bakery business. She is very proud to talk about this, because she is the fourth generation. Natalie, following in her grandpa's footsteps, can say they are the best bakery in Western New York. Many customers still reminisce about it years ago so she is very happy to keep up the memories.

What is your earliest memory of your family's bakery?
When my grandma and grandpa still worked there and I got to see my grandpa and grandma make all the pastries so fast and have good customer service to every customer that walked in.

How do you help out in the bakery?
I started working the cash register at a very early age, and always stuck with it. I actually enjoy customer service now with the general public because it taught me how to deal with others.

What have you learned about the world of business from this experience?
I have learned that you always want to make customers happy and never rush them while in your place of business.

What is your favorite thing to eat at the bakery?
Our cannoli's are always ranked #1 by taste testers and are delicious. I also love the Nutella crescent.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?.
Natalie found Zula from Instagram posts and her friends who used her as their photographer before. Her experience was incredible. Natalie has no negative things to say about Zula. She most loved Zula's patience and the way she was hands on with making sure she looked perfect in every picture. Zula took five hours with her and let her do up to nine outfit changes.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Laying by a beach suntanning.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited for my class's senior trip to Disney and all the fun traditions we have as seniors and spirit weeks. I am also excited for my dance year and dance competitions and am looking forward to College next year.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

I feel like I could talk about aviation and hockey forever. I know it seems crazy because they are two completely different things, these two hobbies really define who I am as a person since I have gained so much knowledge from it and have applied in the real world.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Thanks to my mother, I gave her some ideas of what I wanted to do for my senior pictures, and she's the one who I should credit for finding the right photographer. Once she told me about Abby, I scrolled through a lot of her pictures and knew that she going to take some awesome pictures.
My experience was awesome. We had perfect weather for every shoot. We were able to get permission from the airport and golf course to use the facilities for pictures. I could not have asked for a better session.
What I loved most about the sessions was the energy that Abby brought from the beginning it made the whole evening. Secondly, I enjoyed being able to show off my talents and hit some golf shots and some tennis serves while getting great pictures taken. Lastly I loved being around the planes that took off and landed during the session, it was super fun to watch.

Tell us about your journey as a pilot.
It was when I went on my first commercial flight, we flew to Chicago, and I loved it so much that I pretty much knew then that I wanted to become a pilot. I'm currently in the training stages still, I plan to be more active in it when I go to College at either the University of North Dakota, or Minnesota State Mankato.

What do you love most about flying?
I really enjoy taking off in planes because it sounds so cool, and it is a big rush of adrenaline.

What do you think non pilots might not know about what it takes to be a pilot?
Many people think that there is so much schooling involved, but it is just a normal 4 year college degree. Another thing would be that you have to memorize a lot of knowledge but each cockpit is equipped with checklists for ever pilot to use.

Who got you interested in golf and what do you love most about it?
It was my grandparents that got me interested in golf when I was 6 years old. What I love most about golf is the satisfying shots that pros and some amatuers can make like back spin, long drives, and difficult shots under trees.

If you could golf anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would want to golf at Paynes Valley Golf Course in Missouri because it was made by Tiger Woods.

What is a favorite accomplishment with tennis?
My favorite accomplishment in tennis was placing 4th at our state tournament after upsetting two players.

What is a favorite memory with your tennis team?
My favorite memory with our tennis team is when we drove across the state to play for different schools, and won all of the matches. Another close favorite was every time we've gone to state.

What do you do to volunteer on the Ice?
I help coach little junior hockey players who are around 6&7 years old.

What position do you play in hockey and why does it suit you?
I actually don't play hockey anymore, I had a spinal injury my freshman year that had to pull me out of the sport. However, along with coaching, I am a certified USA Hockey Referee. When I did play hockey I played defense because of my size.

What leadership opportunities have you had?
I have been given the chance to be the captain of one of the hockey teams I've played on.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
I feel like I am a very good communicator, I like to talk a lot so that helps but definitely try to communicate as much as possible with co workers and teammates.

Issue 83 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jillian Glaze is an inspiration to others as she overcame the stigma surrounding mental health in athletes. It's ok to find a new dream and not sacrifice your mental health. She is in the top 20% of her class, works at a coffee shop, babysits, tutors, volunteers in her community, and is in National Honor Society with dreams of becoming a nurse.

Photography by April Moore Creations LLC

Tell us about your experience overcoming the stigma surrounding mental health in athletes. How did this help shape you?
I always excelled in volleyball and had a great love for the sport. I unfortunately got injured and could not play the way I used to. This took a toll on my mental health and I really started to struggle with confidence and self image. I reached out to coaches I trusted most but was met with dismissal. As soon as I voiced my struggles they treated me completely differently and one even told me I was unwanted. As much as it pained me, I walked away because I knew I could not succeed in a space I no longer belonged in. This has shaped me into the person I am today because I know when to walk away when a situation is doing more harm than good. I am now someone other athletes can come to for advice when they are also struggling.

What is your new dream and what are you doing now to prepare for it?
My new dream is to become a nurse to change the lives of the people in my care. Right now I am taking classes in my high school that will prepare me and get me certifications.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class is my CCMA class. It has been really fun learning how to be professional and all of the different aspects that go into being a nurse or physician.

What do you do at the coffee shop and what do you love most about working there?
I work at Lightrail Cafe & Roaster in Winona Lake, and I am both a cook and barista. I love the welcoming atmosphere and the friendships I have made.

What do you love to do most with the children you babysit?
I love babysitting and my favorite thing to do with the kids is to take them outside and away from electronics. I like to provide them with the activities I loved most as a kid such as the park, riding bikes, and swimming. We love to play board games and read!

What is your best skill as a tutor?
My best subjects in school are English and Biology. It makes sense because I love to write and learn about human physiology. These subjects aren’t easy for everyone, so I try to relate them to other interests in their life to help it make more sense. I have great problem solving skills, so when one approach doesn’t work, I can quickly come up with another that will.

Tell us about your volunteer experiences. Which was your favorite and why?
I have volunteered at many places such as Feed My Starving Children, animal shelters, local parks, and at my church. My favorite would have to be the animal shelter because I seem to connect well with the animals. Walking dogs and cuddling cats is just so calming to not only me but also the animals! Making a difference in lives other than humans is so special.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
I lead in a way that is welcoming rather than bossy. I have a fun personality and a great sense of humor that people tend to enjoy. Being confident in myself is what draws people to me and allows me to lead while feeling comfortable. People don’t always respond well to authority, which is why it is important to me to make connections while I lead.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me at my grandma’s house with all my cousins. It’s my favorite place to be and I could spend countless hours there. We would bake, swim, and play wiffle ball until the sun went down.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have perseverance because I keep pushing forward no matter what challenges come my way. I have faced many setbacks in my life, but giving up has never an option. I set clear goals and keep a positive attitude while I work towards them. I stay focused and seek support when I need it.

What else would you like to talk about?
Family is very important to me. I like to feel as though I can depend on them for anything, and vise-versa. We always make time for each other and are all very close. We have definitely had our ups and downs, but at the end of the day we are still family and will always love each other.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I’m very big into mental health, as mention in my nomination. I am someone that people can turn to when they are struggling and they know I will not judge them. There is so much silence surrounding mental health and I choose to break that silence and attempt to make a change. I could talk about mental health for hours because there is just so much to it. I am so very passionate about helping people and making a difference in their lives.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found April Moore through social media. Her work caught my eye and I immediately booked my session. April was so kind and welcoming as she helped me warm up to the camera and feel comfortable. One of the best parts was her style closet. She had so many outfits to choose from and it was so exciting. Her ideas were so creative and the whole experience was very positive!

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
I am most looking forward to all of the memories that I will make throughout the year. I am also looking forward to growing closer with my friends, as well as creating new bonds with new friends.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I hope to leave a legacy that shows others that they can do anything that they put their mind to as long as they work hard enough and try.

Tell us about your dance career.
I started dance when I was little, but I've been more active in it throughout my high school life. I am now a 3-year senior on my high school Drill Team.

What do you love most about dance?
I love that I can express my feelings though my passion. Dance has always been my safe place, and is something that I have always loved, and I know that I will continue to love it.

What do you think non dancers do not realize about dancers/dancing?
I think that a misconception about dancers/dancing is that we don't practice like a "real sports team" and that what we do is easy, when in reality, we put in long hours throughout the season, trying to make sure that everything is perfect for every routine we perform, but also that there are times when it gets hard, but we push through and deliver in the end.

What are you doing now to prepare for a career in nursing?
I am taking certain science classes that will help me in the long run to prepare for the nursing field, as well as doing research at home to give me a better understanding of the career.

What are you most looking forward to learning about in the field?
I am most looking forward to learning everything that I can, there isn't a specific part that I am most looking forward to.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Something that I find inspiring about myself, is that I am an overachiever. I am not someone that will just do something to try and get it over with as soon as possible, I try my absolute hardest to get things done in a proper manner.

Give us an example of you as an overachiever.
I went to a dance intensive in Knoxville, Tennessee and I got injured the first day. Instead of me sitting out the rest of the camp like I probably should have, I continued to push myself and finish strong, and to me that's being an overachiever, because even though I could've taken the easy way out, I didn't.

What else would you like to talk about?
There’s a lot of people that I look up to, but someone that has always been an inspiration to me and that has always taught me to be the best that I can be, is my mom. I love her so much and appreciate everything that she does for me!

What fun things do you like to do with your mom?
One of my favorite things that I do with my mom is baking. I get to learn so many new things from her, but I also get to see her love of baking, which she definitely passed down to me.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am beyond passionate about helping others, whether it’s the community or an individual, helping others and knowing that I’ve made even the slightest impact on someone, is very rewarding to me.

Tell us about a favorite service project you have participated in.
One of my favorite service projects would be working at the community theater, mostly elders would come in and getting to greet them and make them smile made me smile. Getting to have conversations with them as I handed them a program and welcome them was definitely the highlight of my evening.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through one of my friends. My experience was absolutely incredible, there was never a dull moment with her and it was the best experience! The energy that she brought and her positive, uplifting attitude was the cherry on top of everything. I loved making new friends, as well as the experience as a whole the most.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would probably find me in my room dancing, singing, or doing homework, dancing has always been a passion of mine, so when I have nothing to do, I'll most likely be dancing. I am also an AP student and with that comes long hours of homework, so to make it a little more fun, I'll be singing!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited about enjoying my senior year, and making sure that I live every single moment to the fullest, because I know that I cannot get it back once it's gone.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I would say that the hardest thing that I have accomplished would be figuring out how to balance AP classes, school dance, studio, and hanging out with friends. After putting in the hard work I was able to see that it is possible to do anything and everything, even with a crazy, hectic schedule.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Strive! Strive to be the best version of yourself, strive to be better every day, strive to do better each day, and strive to work harder than you did the day before, but also be humble, that goes a long way.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself working hard in the career that I wholeheartedly adore, meeting new people, and making the most of each and every day.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity would be painting, I don't do it as often as I use to, but it will forever be something special to me. Painting allows me to relax and have fun.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes I do, I can cross one eye!

3 Things on your bucket list
Zip Lining, Hiking, and Surfing

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom is the person that inspires me the most.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my hard work ethic inspires others, I feel that anyone that carries themself in a positive manner can be an inspiration to anyone.

Tell us about your community service and what you love most about it.

I love to do community service because it helps others and makes me feel good that I can be a helping hand. It also teaches me about responsibility! Being able to socialize with new people is always fun!

What was your experience like as a 3x title holder for St Ann Princess and 1x St Ann Queen?
Holding both titles as princess and queen for my church has been an honor. It’s something both my family and I worked very hard for! Meeting new people and seeing other churches in different towns has been amazing. Also, the support from my community has been exceptional! The love I feel from family and friends has been unreal!

How did you get into pageantry and what have you learned about yourself in the process?
I attended my first fashion show last month and it sure was great! My aunt told my mom about it and my mom asked if I would like to try it. I most definitely said yes!! Since I was younger, I had always wanted to be a model, and this was my chance! I was a little nervous at first but during the process I learned that I had the confidence to walk that stage!

What are you looking forward to next as your title of St Ann Queen?
I am looking forward to representing our St Ann Catholic Church and being a role model to others, especially younger girls! I am hoping to encourage them to run as well!

What has been your favorite way to fundraise in your efforts to get more than $60,000 for your church?
With the support of my family, we were able to do several fundraisers! It was a lot of work, but well worth it! My favorite one had to be the Loteria! We accepted prize donations and got together for a fun afternoon of playing Loteria!

What do you love most about your church and why is it so important to you?
The fellowship our church has is just amazing! There were 6 other candidates running for royalty and we were able to come together and support each other at every event! That is something that meant a lot to me! The support we had for each other!

What was the fashion show like and what was your favorite part?
The fashion show was awesome! I had never experienced anything like that before. The other models were super nice and helpful. I think my favorite part was getting my hair and makeup done! I don’t normally wear makeup, so it was a big change for me, but I loved it!

What leadership roles have you had within the National Junior Honor Society?
I was inducted to NJHS at the end of my 7th grade year. So I have not yet been able to hold a leadership role, but I do believe we all are role models. To be inducted, our members are held at a higher standard. Maintaining our grades and representing the society are just a couple qualifications.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I like to show leadership by example and encouraging others to do the same. I believe teamwork will get you a long way and it’s important to get along with others.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Family is a big inspiration in her life. She is either baking/cooking with mom, out chasing goats at the ranch with her aunts and uncles, or mechanicing with grandpa! To her family is everything! She believes her family has been supportive in everything she does and inspires her to do more!

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
My family is always raising funds for others, but one fundraiser that stood out to me was one for my uncle Jaime! Our family was able to come together in his time of need and it was awesome to see everyone help out any way they could! It’s something I won’t ever forget because family is everything to me!

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
Our families get together in between the holidays to celebrate both thanksgiving and Christmas! It’s about 40 of us & everyone shows up with food and prizes and we enjoy 2 days together playing games, and just enjoying each other’s company! I love when we’re all able to be together and I look forward to it every year!

I absolutely love volleyball! It is something I am very passionate about! I could probably play it every day if my mom would let me! I enjoy being a part of the team and spiking that ball!

Tell us what you love most about competing in the 4H Club.
I participate in photography, food & nutrition, and shooting range! My favorite would be photography! I have an eye for taking pictures and have learned so much on how a camera works. I have learned how to navigate a camera, take photos from different angles, and also how to edit photos. I love that my teacher Mrs. Crenwelge has helped publish my photos which I’ve gotten rewarded for!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Jocelyn’s very passionate about music! Anywhere she goes, she is always listening & dancing to her music. She feels like music brings out her personality and inspires others to come out of their shell and be more outgoing.

What is your favorite genre of music and what are you listening to most right now?
My favorite genre of music is Spanish! My favorite band at the moment is a band called De Parranda. They play a mix of cumbias and norteñas, which is dancing music! I love to listen and dance to their music!

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
We are very fortunate that our photographer happens to be Jocelyn’s uncle's sister-in-law. Although she is family, we have been able to see her work through social media and it’s amazing!
The experience was nothing less than amazing. Jocelyn was very comfortable with Nicole, and she also took some suggested possess from Jocelyn.
Jocelyn loved that Nicole was open to suggestions and she also had some great ideas. She made Jocelyn feel very comfortable and was very easy to work with!

Lucas Cross

9/11/2024

Picture

Lucas Cross – Kansas
Nomination by Jennifer Cross
Photography by Gena Marie Photography
Issue 83 of Inspiring Teens magazine

Nomination: Lucas Cross has continuously stepped up into leadership roles and led difficult conversations to empower others. He epitomizes “we over me” and shows incredible maturity for a 17 year old. He is a leader in everything he does and makes certain to mentor those who will come after him!
Photography by Gena Marie Photography
How would you describe your leadership syle?
My leadership style is one which leans heavily on my ability to communicate. I am a very vocal leader, and take pride in my ability to bring people together with aspiring pregame words. However, I would say my leadership shines brightest in my ability to help those less experienced or younger than me; this is also one of my favorite things about being in a leadership role.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is by far my ability to bring a voice to others. I love being able to help those who lack confidence or voice to be able to express themselves, whether that be on or off the field. I try to put myself in situations to be the leader or mentor for those younger than me that I wish I would have had when i was their age.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my high school tenure, both on the baseball and soccer field, I have had to endure and push through multiple challenges involving the natural occurrences of high school sports, including poor coaching, poor attitude of teammates, ect. this includes multiple instances where I have had to step up for something I believe in, or act as a voice of concern or disagreement for others who worry for being punished for speaking so (playing time, cut, ect). Beyond the sports field, I have overcome many other challenges brought on by my strong, outgoing personality.

When did you start playing soccer and what position do you play? Why does it suit you?
I started playing soccer when I was 5 yrs old, and for the longest time I played defender. Recently, I’ve played almost every position, but have settled into forward due to a lack of personnel on the high school team. Forward has suited me well, as my recent gain in strength, speed, and physicality have allowed me to be effective from that position.

What is your favorite accomplishment with soccer?
My favorite accomplishment with soccer hasn’t happened yet, as the end of my senior year this year will mark it no matter what. It represents so much for me, as the soccer field/team has been the place where my growth both physically but more so spiritually has been most noticeable. The season also outlooks to be more successful than years past, being the first time the program has been 2-0 to start a season in over a decade.

Give us an example of how you've used your strong, outgoing personality to right a wrong inside the realm of sports.
My sophomore/junior year, our soccer program had a new hire as head coach. Those two years were miserable, as a team we all began to lose interest in playing due to the environment that had been created. At the end of my sophomore year, I had a one on one discussion with the coach addressing the issues of myself and teammates. This had little effect. The following year, I helped organize a group of teammates to approach the Athletic Director with the issue, as the situation worsened. This finally brought an end to the abuse, and the coach's tenure.

What else would you like to talk about?
I love baseball, more specifically pitching, most of my free time is spent in activities to continue elevating my craft as a pitcher. I've dedicated most of my young life to the sport, and it is truly the thing below family I love most.

Tell us about your baseball career.
My baseball career began later than most, starting at 9 yrs old. In short, I was horrible, uncoordinated and weaker than opponents and teammates. I didn’t even begin pitching until the year I turned 13 (most start at 9 or 10). This left me far behind my peers, however during the span of my high school years, I have risen to become one of the best pitchers in the state, and will be going on scholarship to play at Missouri Western State next fall.

What is a favorite memory with your baseball team?
My Favorite baseball team memory would be the last weekend of the summer headed into my freshman year, that team was awesome, and played a large role in me falling as deeply in love with baseball as I have. The final weekend, we played in a massive tournament, managing to take 3rd place. We wrapped up that summer with a massive pool party, and a sandlot game. This memory is my favorite, less so for the weekend itself, but the representation it has of the whole summer, and the team that was pivotal in starting my baseball career.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Baseball in general is my specialty, more specifically pitching. I could enjoy spending hours talking about pitching mechanics, strategy, lifting, ect. Beyond baseball, economics and sneaker collecting are topics I am well versed in. Sneaker collecting more so because I am passionate about it, but economics more so as that has been the main focus of my education and my intended field of study in college.

What do you love most about economics?
I’ve always been strangely well versed in math, to the point where naturally I began diving into accounting and economics. Economics took over my interest, as the concepts and history are more complex than most. The history in particular, is my favorite as it is something most people don’t have a vast amount of knowledge in, and I enjoy understanding the widely unknown.

How did you get into sneaker collecting and what is the most interesting thing you've learned in this endeavor?
There isn’t much of a story to my sneaker collection, for whatever reason starting freshman year I decided to spend the money I had saved from many birthdays on sneakers. Since then it has become part of my personality. The most interesting thing I've come to understand is how deep sneaker culture goes. The way that people use them to express themselves, some even using sneakers as a livelihood. Sneakers bring people from many different cultures together in stores and at massive conventions. In many cases acting as a creator of friendships, similar to the way sports bring people together.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Gena was a teacher at my elementary school, she is also very well known for senior photos in my community. In addition she has taken family portraits for my family twice. My experience with Gena was awesome, she brought many ideas for the photos, but also allowed for some creative liberty from me and what I would like to try. I typically dread pictures, however my time with Gena was memorable and one of the best times I've had in my short life thanks largely to the personality and creativeness of the photoshoot. Plus, Gena is an absolutely fantastic photographer.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Without a doubt I would be found in the weightroom, on a baseball field, or at my desk reviewing footage finding every little tweak in my pitching mechanics that could be improved. Whenever I find the time, baseball always finds a way to fill it up.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am really excited at the prospect of playing college baseball, and the idea of what could possibly follow the college baseball career excites me to no end.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
In order to accomplish anything in life, there are hours of silence and work between where you are and where you want to be. On the way there will be countless numbers of people determined to slow you down and take you off your path. Never let someone tell you what you can and can’t do, and always strive to be better than the person you were yesterday. And I promise, if you show up and perform, get better day after day, you will reap the rewards.

Tell us about your career in eventing.

The very first time I took a horse back riding lesson, I absolutely fell in love with the sport. I just knew it was meant for me. I started learning to ride when I was almost ten years old, and started competing a little over a year later. I have been eventing competitively for almost eight years now. It takes up a lot of my time, but it’s extremely worth it. I like to stay busy, and being busy with horses makes it ten times better. Looking back at where I was in the sport of eventing eight years ago versus where I am now is absolutely astonishing. I have learned so much from the sport of eventing throughout the years. It has taught me patience and perseverance. I have gone up the levels of eventing while building relationships with different horses along the way.

What do you love most about the sport?
What I love most about eventing is the community. The people of the eventing community are always so welcoming. Everyone is appreciated by their peers, and competitors are supportive of everyone around them.

What is the hardest thing about training?
I would say the hardest thing about training would be the setbacks. This sport takes so much patience and time to build a relationship with your horse in order to achieve goals, and when one little whoopsie happens, it can take a long time to get back into the right mindset to keep going.

What do you think other people don't realize about eventing?
I do not think other people realize how difficult eventing is. People don’t even realize how difficult horseback riding is in general, but eventing itself is one of the most dangerous sports in the USA. The blood, sweat, and tears put into this sport is almost unimaginable. I do wish more people truly understood what eventing was and the type of mindset a person needs to have in order to succeed.

Tell us all about your horse.
My horse, Elianna Mae (Ellie), is a 15’2 hand thoroughbred mare. She just turned eighteen this past April and is the best horse in the world. Although Ellie started her career as a race horse, her previous owner had been eventing with her. Ellie has helped me move up the eventing levels with confidence and has impacted my life in the most special way. Everyone who knows Ellie truly loves her!

How have you and your horse handled the vision loss?
When Elianna lost her eyesight in her left eye, we both lost a lot of confidence in not only ourselves, but in each other too. It took many long, hard months to be riding as a pair again, but we never gave up on each other. Now yes, there were times I thought about giving up. I was losing all of my confidence and just wanted to quit, but I remember telling myself that I was not going to give up, because I knew Ellie didn’t deserve that. While it took numerous months to become champions at the sport again, I am so proud of Ellie and me for gaining back our trusting relationship.

What was the American Eventing Championships like?
The American Eventing Championships were an absolute dream. The venue, the people, the arenas, I mean just everything was perfect. I had been dreaming of competing at the American Eventing Championships for years, and when I finally qualified, I couldn’t even believe it. It was definitely the most exciting show and atmosphere in which I have ever competed.

What is a moment you will never forget from that event?
I will never forget galloping between the finish flags after cross country. That cross country course is, and probably will always be, my most favorite cross country course completion of all time.

What do you love most about teaching young riders about eventing?
What I love most about teaching future eventers is the idea that I am starting a child's future. I get to help create their love for the sport of eventing. I have the ability to teach someone my favorite sport and all that it entails. I am the person who is creating future eventers, right in front of my own eyes.

What is your strongest leadership skill? I would say relationship building is my strongest leadership skill. I believe building strong relationships with others is one of the most important things you can accomplish in life.

What is next for you in the sport of eventing?
My goal is to finish my senior year of high school doing eventing with Ellie, and then see where life will take me from there. I know eventing will always be an important part of my life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
While my nomination portrays who I truly am as a person, I feel an inspiring characteristic about me is my time management skills. While balancing horseback riding, academics, a job, and spending time with family and friends, I have found numerous ways to equally maintain a healthy relationship with everything in my life. While it can be stressful at times to have so much on my plate, I always choose to keep looking on the bright side of everything.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My mom is an elementary school teacher, and such a joy to be around. I would love to grow up and be a teacher just like her. My dad works for Verizon and is always on top of his busy schedule. His time management skills are immaculate, and I hope to one day be just as immaculate with my time management skills as he is. My younger brother, Cole, is very silly and loves to joke around. He can always make me laugh when I need it. I feel like we all understand each other and always want what is best for one another. We are a close family and lucky to have each other.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
My most favorite family tradition is putting streamers on our bedroom door for our birthdays. When I wake up every year on my birthday, my favorite thing is getting to walk through the streamers hung on my door. Thanks, Mom!

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
My friends are the most amazing people. They are so fun to be around, and I love getting to hangout with each and every one of them. We love swimming, eating ice cream, and movie watching. Even if we are all just laying on a couch together, I love every minute of it.

What else would you like to talk about?
This past year, I toured many colleges with my family looking for a place I felt at home. I have narrowed it down to a few different colleges, all of which are in different states! I am looking forward to attending college next year and starting my next adventure.

What do you plan on going to college for?
As of right now I plan on going into education. My dream is to teach first grade at an elementary school in Texas.

What are you going to miss most about high school?
I am definitely going to miss all of my friends and family. I know I will not get to see them as often as I do now, so I am trying to spend as much time with them as I can.

What are you most excited about doing at college?
I am super excited to get to experience college life. I am looking forward to living on my own, possibly being in a sorority, and living in a dorm. I am honestly stoked about all of it!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
The passion I feel for the outdoors is like no other. Waking up in the morning to walk outside and feel the breeze and the warmth of the sun is almost indescribable. The pleasant feeling of rain on a lazy day makes me feel refreshed. When it's hazy outside, it always makes the day go by slowly. Looking up at the beautiful moon at night with all of the stars surrounding me is one of my favorite things of all.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my wonderful photographer, Jennifer Yates, through Instagram. I had been looking for a senior portrait photographer for quite some time, and I came upon some of Mrs. Jennifer's photos and immediately fell in love with them. My experience of the shoot was amazing. She helped me coordinate my outfits and poses which helped every single one of my photos turn out incredible. What I loved most about my photography session was how sweet Mrs. Jennifer was. Even though it was super hot outside, she kept a great attitude throughout the entire shoot!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Everyone who knows me knows the answer to this question. My bed. If you don’t know where I am, just come check my bed! It’s my favorite warm and cozy place to take a nap, do my homework or even just lay under my covers to relax.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited to graduate after my senior year and spend my last summer as a highschooler. Summer has always been my favorite season, and I am thrilled to spend it with my family, my friends, and my boyfriend.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was my very first day of sixth grade. I don’t think I have ever been more nervous than I was that day. I was so scared everyone was going to think I was weird, or an odd person, but I made so many friends that day. I don’t know how I accomplished that day all by myself, but I did and I will forever be proud of the younger me for doing it all on her own.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell that person to never give up. No matter how hard life gets, I promise there will always be a bright side.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I would like to be on my way to graduating college, finding an elementary school to teach 1st grade, and possibly looking for an apartment to live in after college.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I am obsessed with playing Sudoku. I play the game on my phone or computer whenever I get the chance. I even make my boyfriend play the game with me, too!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can pop both of my hips at any time. This hidden talent is not necessarily a good thing, but I love telling people about it.

3 Things on your bucket list
First thing on my bucket list is to travel to Mexico with my boyfriend. We have been talking about wanting to go to Mexico for quite some time now, and we are both determined to check it off our bucket lists. Another thing on my bucket list is to travel to all 50 states. I have been to about 16 states but would love to see them all! I would also love to go watch the Olympics. It just seems so much better to watch it in person rather than at home on the couch.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mother a very inspiring woman. She works so hard for everyone around her and always has the biggest smile on her face.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my gratitude is very inspiring to others. I am always grateful for everything I have ever been given, and never take anything for granted.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I really appreciate everything Inspiring Teen Magazine has been doing for teens all over America!

Jordyn Carranza – Texas
Nomination by Laura Carranza
Photography by Seniors by Vaughanadora

Nomination: Jordyn Carranza is a big hearted young woman, who has had trouble with bullying as far back as I can remember, she has handled it all with such grace and resilience. Jordyn is a senior this year, and finished her Junior year with a CNA certificate. Jordyn is an amazing friend, a loving sister, and the sweetest daughter. Jordyn continues to live each day pushing to be the best version of herself.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Throughout my High School career I have blessed with a Senior who would take me into their group and just make my year the best. These past Seniors have made me want to be that person for underclassman. A person that they know they can go too, and will make them feel welcomed and mentored.

What else would you like to talk about?
No matter how different you are from everyone, you will always find a group that is made for you. Despite getting bullied almost all my life I have learned there is someone for you who will see you for you even through your differences.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am passionate about people I love. I could talk about my friends and family forever, anytime I know one of my friends or family has accomplished something I am always so happy for them and will talk about it to anyone who is willing to listen. Their happiness just brings so much joy to me.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I remember my mamma always talking about Roxanne and how much she loved her because of the person she is. Roxanne took my sisters Senior pictures, and it has just been uphill from there. Roxanne makes everything so fun, easy, and you feel so comfortable around her, the vision just comes to life. Roxanne is my person, she will fingers crossed be taking pictures at all my life milestones.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
In my senior year I am most looking forward to taking and fingers crossed passing my four State test for the nursing program. I am looking forward to all the fun activities that we will be doing this year as a Senior now that most of the hard work is done. Of course I am also looking forward to Graduation.

What is a CNA certificate and what did you need to do to earn it?
A CNA certificate is a Certified nursing aid certificate. To earn my CNA I was enrolled in the CNA dual credit class with SWTJC, in class you learn all the skills and duties as a CNA. Once you learn all skills you then go to clinicals to get hands on experiences on what it is like to be a CNA. Then I and took the state test which is both a written and skills test. It took a lot of studying, time, and dedication but the hard work paid off. Shout out to Ms. Martinez

What is your friend group like and what is a common activity you enjoy together?
My friend group is such an uplifting, fun, supportive group, there is never a dull moment when we are together! A common activity is snacking, devouring pizza while watching a Disney movie, they are our favorites.

What is a favorite family tradition you will never forget?
My favorite family traditions are our cruises. My family and our extended family The Sweetens plan a summer trip almost each summer. You meet so many people from all over the U.S. It is so much FUN!

How has being bullied shaped you as a person?
Being bullied has shaped me as a person in many ways, it has made me realize no matter how good of a person you are there will always be someone who will find something to say about you but you can’t let that bring you down. Being bullied hasn’t stopped me from being me because I know I will always find someone that likes me for me.

What do you wish both bullies and victims of bullies understood better?
Something I wish both bullies and victims of bullies understood better is that we are all human and all have feeling, you never know what a person may be going through in life. Being bullied takes a big toll on peoples wellbeing and mental health and I don’t think many people realize what it does to one’s self. It takes no cost to be kind, make a difference and make a kind gesture whether it’s to a stranger or a friend.

3 Things on your bucket lists
3 things on my bucket list would have to be, to visit all 50 states it would be so cool to see what every state has to offer, go skydiving I have always wanted to go sky diving for as long as I can remember, and go to an Adele concert I love Adele and her music so much, it is a dream to see her live in concert!
