What would you most like to talk about?
I'm open to any topics! But if i were to stick with one , It would be my journey through mariachi. This wonderful hobby of mine has helped me build long-lasting friendships and connections that I will forever hold close to my heart. It has helped my confidence, and sense of self.

Tell us about your Mariachi Music.
I began my mariachi journey in 7th grade. Due to covid restrictions at the time, I wasn't able to get proper in-classroom instruction. Because of this, I was progressing very very slowly, and even in some instances, I felt as if my skill was at a standstill. Taking matters into my own hands, I practiced day and night to perfect my playing. Slowly but surely, things came together, and I placed 1st chair in all region tryouts my 8th grade year! Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I am a 3 time All Region Mariachi qualifier! I know that I am exactly where I want to be with this passion of mine, and I wish for any more wonderful years with my friends, directors, and mentors!

Where is your favorite place you've performed and why?
Though I have experience through many different competitions and grand auditorium performances, my favorite place to preform has simply just been local restaurants! I absolutely love seeing the smiles on locals' faces when we play fan- favorite songs. Watching as they dance and sing along is one of the most priceless things to me. Being able to bring people together through the love of music is a huge honor that i am truly blessed to have.

What has this hobby taught you?
The most important thing that Mariachi has taught me, is resilience, and to stay strong and keep pushing, even when the road ahead looks impossible to navigate. It serves as a constant reminder that I can do anything I set my mind to, and that no matter what, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, and a prize to be won.

What is a favorite memory with your group?
Putting our small school out there! Gracing the stage at the TAME state competition and placing 1st in the 2a school division I something that I always will hold dear to my heart. Not just placing, but the experience backstage aswell! Getting ready, joking around, and simply just having fun conversation before taking the stage has created some of the funniest, and most loving memories!

What do you love most about your Hispanic Culture?
Out of many beautiful traditions and holidays, one thing stands out above all, and I know most will agree on me with this one, the FOOD! Making it, eating it, everything! Some of my best memories are associated with the people I love, eating the food we love.

What do you wish others knew about your culture?
We are BIG on family oriented values. We are always there for each other, and we always have each others backs no matter what.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
At heart, I am a loving and supportive soul. If a friend of mine ever needs help or support in any situation, I will be the first to show up. Whether it's a softball game or simply just moral support at home, give me 10 minutes, I'll be there!

Why do you feel it's so important to show others support?
It's crucial to show support to others because it creates a positive and uplifting environment. When we support each other, we build strong connections and make the world a better place. Its like spreading kindness and positivity wherever we go!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Animals! I've always been an animal lover, I have 4 ducks and two cats at home. Every time I see a stray animal, my immediate thought is to take it home and foster it. I have so much love for strays, I believe every animal out there deserves a loving and safe home, where they never go hungry or cold.

Tell us about your ducks and cats. What are their rescue stories, names, personalities, everything!
My four ducks, are named Pato, Vato, Hibachi, and Butters. Pato and Vato are Rouen ducks, while Hibachi and Butters are Peking ducks! they're all super talkative, and sometimes nosy, but it makes for a good laugh! My ducks were simply a gift to me from my parents!
My cats on the other hand, Stevie and Guava, are way more laid back, calm and cuddly. Guava was a stray who we took in, and Stevie was adopted from a local shelter!

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I found Forke’s through Instagram! I have friends who I would see pictures of all the time, and these pictures were always taken with a unique theme, and twist to them! I soon found out that they were part of this photographer's Model Rep Program! I was intrigued, and through an interest form, to an interview, I became part of the program! So far, it's been so much fun meeting all the girls and getting to dress up for themed shoots! I absolutely cannot wait for my future with this program!

What is a favorite memory you have with the person who nominated you?
That would have to be taking a girls trip to San Antonio, and while everyone was asleep, we stayed up, and just talked to each other about how life was going for us, and gave each other advice on topics brought up.

What is your family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I am one of the youngest in my family. I am the only person in my family who has moved forward with my musical career. Even with my musical/ modeling career keeping me on my toes, it does not stop me from being myself when I'm around my family and friends. Family know no boundaries!

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Family barbecues! Any occasion, big or small, calls for a barbecue!! Gathering together and catching up, joking with each other, messing around, laughing, making memories, and just having fun are why I love this tradition so much! I truly hope these never end!

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to be a part of this magazine because I want to be an inspiration to little girls out there, little girls who are afraid to break out of their shell and take challenges head on. With mariachi being a field that is very out there, and is very centered around the “Do it or don't” mentality, I struggled a lot with finding my confidence and voice. However, I never gave up, and through lots of practice and positive reminders, I no longer am afraid to present myself with confidence through performances. Though it takes time and work, it's possible!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would most likely find me with friends! Whether its driving around listening to music, eating together at a restaurant, shopping together, or simply just hanging out at home, I will never turn down a hangout!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Will the end of my high school career approaching, I will be heading off to college soon, and that college will be The University of Texas at San Antonio! Here I plan to audition for the universities' mariachi group, and be blessed with the privilege to play with them! Its going to be a long journey, and take a lot of practice, regardless, I cannot wait!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Keep pushing and working no matter what. Know that your efforts will not be wasted, and there is a prize to be won!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am so incredibly blessed to be featured in this magazine. Thank you so much Inspiring Teens!

McKenna Martin – Wisconsin
Nomination & Photography by Ashley Kalbus Photography
Issue 85 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: McKenna is such an amazing person and has an incredible future ahead of her! After being bullied at a young age, she decided she wanted to make a positive impact on the world. She aspires to become an RN that specializes in high trauma critical care. And hopes to help others who aren't able to help themselves. Through her struggles she has realized the importance of comfort and compassion during times of need. She wants to be the light in other's lives. With her determination and passion for helping others I know she has the power to change the world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some inspiring things about me are my energy, I am a very uplifting and supportive friend and family member. Others would describe me as positive and that I find the good in all things around me. Some would say that I like to “live on the edge” meaning I love to go outside of my comfort zone and experience new things. I am not one to hold on to things that will bring me down and quickly find deeper meaning as to how challenges in my life will make me a stronger person!

What else would you like to talk about?
My future is also something that I am very passionate about. I have set myself up for a successful future by completing numerous college courses throughout my high school career. This has allowed me to get accepted into a 2 year bachelors program for nursing. My determination and desire to become a nurse has motivated me to accelerate my academic journey. I have always known that nursing is what I want to do and I am proud to be ahead of my anticipated academic career plan.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
One thing that I feel I could talk about forever is my family, There is nothing in this world that I could have done without their support. They have always been there to pick me up when I didn’t want to pick myself up and encourage me to keep going through the thick and thin. Not only do they support me, but they love me unconditionally even when I am being challenging. Without my family, I wouldn’t be half the person I am today.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I found my photographer Ashley through instagram when I happened to win a photoshoot giveaway! After my amazing friend photoshoot, I knew I wanted her to do my senior pictures. Ashley made the whole process fun and easy. We started with a consultation on what I wanted out of my senior photos and how she would make that come to life. She went along with all my ideas and gave me many other fun ideas that we incorporated into my shoot. I loved Ashley’s upbeat and fun personality making both of my sessions comfortable and effortless.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine because it gives me the opportunity to share my goals and motivations in life along with what inspires me to keep going in life. I also want to show other teens that they can do whatever they set their minds to, there is nothing too small or too big that can’t be accomplished. Although not everyone may want to go to college or receive degrees there is always a place for everyone and with hard work and determination you can do anything. Everyone has the power to change the world through their own stories and experiences.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory with Ashley was my senior session. She went all out and did not hesitate to make sure that everything i envisioned came to life. My session was full of laughter and was nothing but a good time. During my session we got adventurous and took photos in the water, Ashley never thought twice about getting fully submerged to get the perfect photos. During the whole photoshoot she made me feel gorgeous and never stopped hyping me up! I couldn’t thank Ashley enough for capturing my last year of high school and making it an unforgettable experience.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Jodi Mercier, my photographer, has been a close friend of my father's for thirty plus years. We always knew she would take my Senior pictures, because she created my birth announcements by taking my baby photos over seventeen years ago. I was one of the first clients that she was able to come full circle with. I loved how personable the photo shoot was, being outside on the perfect evening, and the breathtaking sunset photos.

Lastly, being a part of this magazine gives me the opportunity to earn a scholarship for college and inspire others just like me to give it a try. How amazing is that?

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
Jill Kathan, my mother, nominated me for this honor. She knows me better than anyone. I have fond memories of her working in my classrooms as a substitute teacher almost daily, ever since first grade until now. Looking back, I understand why and I’m very grateful I was able to have her at all events, parties, teachable moments, and lunchtime. Last year, one of my favorite memories was her attending my AP Government trip to Chicago. I feel like she is more than a mom, she is one of my best friends.

What are your secrets to balancing everything you have on your plate?
The most important part in balancing my life is to know my schedule and include time to rest and have a social life. Most days I have college work to do along with my jobs and clubs as well. Many times, this can be stressful, however having a great support system is crucial. Knowing your limits on what is too much is also something I like to keep in mind to ensure that I have time to myself and time to spend with the people I love. Keeping a detailed schedule is so important because it is what I plan my life around and how I go through my daily routine.

What is your favorite class at school right now and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My dual enrollment biology class is probably my favorite school subject right now as it is what I plan to do in college, Pre-medicine. My teacher, who is also a sort of mentor of mine, has really pushed me in microbiology. We also studied cancer and how it affects the body, which is something I hope to further research in college, so I would say that is my biggest interest now. Having a successful scientist, who is also a woman has been a great resource and role model. It’s so important to see people like you doing things that you wish to do in the future. I am most thankful to the women in science and medicine that I can look up to and learn from. My love for science and medicine would be nowhere without my female mentors.

What have you found is the difference between high school classes and college classes?
The biggest difference that I’ve learned between high school classes and college classes is the workload and freedoms that come along with them. In my high school classes, I have a small workload and a more structured class, while in college classes, I have more work, and my work is done on my own time. Being able to complete my college work on my own time gives me a chance to grow in responsibility and accountability. I have loved being able to do both high school and college classes at the same time, and have learned so much about staying on top of my schoolwork. My high school classes gave me the base of what I would learn in college, but my college classes have prepared me for what the next four years will be like.

Why was obtaining your CNA at 16 important to you?
Getting my CNA at 16 is not the norm for average teenage girls. I knew I wanted to get my CNA so I could dip my foot in the medical field and really understand patient care. Getting my CNA was a long year journey, but something I learned a lot from and will continue to learn from. I hope to begin working as a CNA in December. Knowing that at 16, I could do a job that was so important and touch so many people’s lives was really something that I wanted to do and I’m glad that I did.

What has been your most memorable moment in the NHS?
My most memorable moment in the national honor Society is undeniably the induction ceremony. I have spent a lot of my time putting on community events and supporting not only my school, but my state which has been so beautiful to see. I think that seeing that you were part of something so important and being nationally recognized for your hard work at the induction ceremony is something you’ll never forget. The people beside you are the people who are going to be supporting you and supporting your community for the next two years. That night is the night that you decide to do something for the community and to do something with your peers who have worked so hard beside you the entire way.

How would you describe yourself as a leader, and what is your strongest leadership quality?
I’ve been a leader in many clubs, sports and classes. I have been honored to be the vice president in SCA and HOSA as well as a leader in my leadership class, my cheer teams, the national honor Society, and much more. I do not think that it is the title that makes you a leader. It is the commitment. In my time in these roles, I’ve learned to stand in front of a crowd and talk about what I think is important and to find new ways to uplift our school, community, and our nation. Being a leader does not mean that you have a job title or a higher position than anyone else, it is the will and want to make a change and to share your ideas on how to do so. I believe that my strongest leadership quality is the ability reach out to multiple people and come up with a plan for change.

What are your roles and responsibilities as Senior Secretary for Student Council?
My roles and responsibilities as senior secretary for my student council were to take notes and share my thoughts with the club on how to evolve and improve our school community. As the vice president of SCA currently I am now able to make these changes happen, meet with our school board and principal, plan events that will uplift our school climate, and help change our school for the better. As a senior secretary and as the vice president now I’ve been so honored to be a part of the change.

How did you become Cheer Manager and what does it mean to you?
Last year as I was going to work and doing multiple college classes, I decided that during the winter season I would be the cheer manager and give up my spot on the winter season cheer team. This decision did not come lightly, and it was not easy to communicate with my team and my coaches. This decision was hard. I saw this as an opportunity to help my school and my team throughout the season. During the season I helped organize events and showed up to most of the practices and the games to help keep our team on track. I loved this time as manager as it gave me insight on organizational skills and helped me balance my life on top of my love for cheer.

What does the Renaissance/Leadership Program do and what do you do as the Class Leader?
Our school has recently added the Renaissance leadership program to our school class list. In joining this class I did not fully know what would come of this semester. The first day in class I was one of the kids to be decided as a leader of the class. In this class, we dedicate our time and resources to help organize events for the school, advertise them on social media and create events that will help our school spirit. Organizing the class and giving everybody a position really helped the workload for me and the other school leaders. The Renaissance Leadership Class is a beautiful curriculum that helps kids who want to be leaders and has really grown kids in our class to be those leaders they wish to be.

What has been your most rewarding experience as a VA representative at the National Congress of Future Medical Leaders?
As a Virginia representative at the national Congress of future medical leaders, I was able to sit alongside kids who had the same ideas as me and the same wishes for the future. This event was so important because it gave me insight into other doctors and famous scientists that came before me. I was able to watch surgery, speak with famous doctors, see famous cases, and learned so much about the medical field. The most rewarding experience as a Virginia representative was being able to see people from all different states at the Boston Congress, in which Duke, Harvard and other major colleges attend and put on. Making contacts with people from all over the world who are the future of medicine and will be going through the same school as me is so important because it gave me a community to connect with and a group of people who understand the workload and commitment that is the medical field.

What service project is closest to your heart and why?
The service project that is closest to my heart is the project that my peers and I have put on through the Red Cross blood drive every year. In this event, we invite kids from our school and teachers to give blood. Though this act seems small it is what saves hundreds of thousands of lives. As the vice president of Hozier, which is the health occupations students of America I hope to do at least two blood drives this year. In doing this event every year we ask our teachers why it was so important to them last year. I got an answer that would change my life forever. One of our teachers had a wife who died from an awful disease but had previously needed blood transfusions weekly. She said that due to the amount of people that year who gave blood, it was doable. I knew after this conversation why our annual blood drive is so important. Seeing the amount of kids every year who are willing to sit down and give their blood was so moving and I hope to do this for years to come.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my free time I have previously worked with kids and I hope to continue to do that through my life and my career after high school. I also have done All Star cheer and competition dance my entire life and grew up working in the studio. I currently do sideline cheer and spend my time at work or working out with friends.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My love for politics is unmatched I think I have always been very opinionated and I could see myself being involved in politics one day if the opportunity came around.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I have known my photographer since I was a kid doing dancing, singing, and acting and have always loved her work. She was great at helping me pose, move my outfits, find amazing lighting, and take photos. She is an amazing woman and is in my opinion one of the best in the field.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to inspire girls to not be afraid of trying new things to be being bold and get out there. Growing up I struggled with eating and I was often really anxious in public but learning to love yourself and be yourself is so important.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
Faith Quiroga has always been there for me no matter where I was or what I was doing. Whether I was acting, cheering, singing, or dancing she was always supporting me and there for my growth as a person.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day, you would probably find me at the beach. The fondest moments in my life, I’ve been found on a beach. I hope to one day live on the beach as it is a beautiful place.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
The next thing I plan to do that I’m so excited about is college. I’ve spent the last two months sending in my applications, scores, and nominations to the best schools in America. As an American, I am so lucky to have all these options and opportunities in front of me And I cannot wait for the future ahead. I plan to study Pre-med and decide later down the line between being a doctor or Physician’s Assistant. I hope to be involved in my school and the clubs as that is really important to me. As the first kid in my family to go to college, I am beyond excited and ready to take the next step for my future.

What would you like to talk about?
This was previously mentioned in my nomination paragraph but I am very passionate for learning more about photography and to keep on practicing.

What do you love most about photography?
The reason I love photography is because I think it is so delicate and can capture the most beautiful things and moments.

What do you take the most pictures of and why?
The two things I take the most pictures of is either sports or my friends. The reason I take the most pictures of those two things is because I feel I am the best at capturing those moments and making the important things stand out.

What is the most interesting skill you've learned recently in portraiture?
I believe the most interesting skill I’ve learned is how much you can change perspective on an image and like I mentioned before is capturing the most beautiful moments.

If you could go anywhere in the world and photograph anyone, who would it be and why?
I would love to go to Greece or Italy to photograph a wedding because that would be such an opportunity and the scenery is so breathtaking.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I always try to be kind to others and my goal is to make somebody's day and brighten their mood. I am a very big advocate for mental health and think it is one of the most important things in life. It doesn't matter if I know you or I don't, I will offer to help and talk. I also am very big on not letting what other people think about you affect how you think or live your life.

What do you wish other teens knew about when struggling with mental health?
That things get better but that doesn’t mean in an instant. For things to get better it takes time and a lot of hard work discovering who you are, it takes time for your mind to heal and for you to realize and believe in yourself again.

What is advice you have on letting go of feelings about what other people might have of you?
This is definitely one of the most hard things to overcome, but the best advice is to think that other people have so much going on that they most likely aren’t even thinking about what you are doing. Also you are your own person and you’re the only person who can control what you do and how you think.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I can talk about an abundance of things forever, but most definitely my relationship with my mom and my love for her.

Tell us about this relationship.
My relationship with my mom has definitely been a roller coaster over the years but that’s what has made us so close and now she’s my best friend.

What is a favorite memory with your mom that you will never forget?
Probably at the Billie Eilish concert in 2022 when she was was singing “when the party’s over” and my mom was holding me and comforting me the whole song because she knew how much that song means to me.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
I found my photographer, Natalia, through recommendations by people and events at my high school. My experience was amazing and so much fun because she really knows how to bring out such beauty in every pose and pic. I love how she makes me feel relaxed and at ease at a shoot.

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite moment with Natalia, who nominated me, was a couple years ago, when I was introduced to her at my cousins graduation party. She saw me observing her style of photographing everyone and came up to me to talk about my love of photography. She really showed an interest in my passion and offered to help me whenever she could. I am so grateful to Natalia for her kindness and I have pursued photography ever since.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I would love to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine because I believe it will be an amazing opportunity for a career start and can help me tremendously with college, if I am fortunate enough to win scholarship money. Another reason is because it has always been a dream of mine to be in a photo that captures me for who I am. Being a part of all the nominated teen photos is such an honor, and I'm so thankful for that.

What are you most excited about being a senior this year?
Definitely all the excitement about graduating and all the fun things only seniors get to experience.

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
I have a very big and amazing friend group. We all love and support each other even through our ups and downs. All of us are up for anything as long as we can all be together and have fun.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Most definitely shopping or with my friends.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited to start college next year! I am ready to have a fresh start somewhere new and meet new people.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
Maturity. I've always been slightly more mature for my age, but I think it helps alot with mentoring my classmates.

I enjoy learning about health and fitness. While my goal is to become a sonographer, I also want to learn more about keeping a healthy mind and body. I enjoy daily work outs whether it's inside a gym for an hour or my bedroom for ten minutes, I try to find a way to always get one in.

Tell us more about why you want to become a sonographer and what the job entails.
I have always loved babies. I believed I wanted to go into nursing for pediatrics, but once I started to see what a sonographer does, I was captivated. To be able to work with the parents and see the little life they are bringing into this world brings so much happiness.

What is a normal week for you with your body and mind commitment to fitness?
I prepare my meal plans for the week on Sunday evenings. So this way, I have my breakfast, lunch, and snack ready for my school week. Then I follow it up with work outs 5-6 times a week.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My love of writing. I enjoy writing because it gives me an outlet to express my thoughts and feelings without feeling judged. I feel after a good writing session, my vision is more clear. This is why it's imperative that I sit and write before bed.

What do you enjoy writing about the most?
My life and inspiring quotes to follow.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Mr. Arnold contacted Wedding Lace, a local dress shop I modeled for, and requested me for a shoot. As soon as my Mom and I met him and his wife, we knew it was the perfect match. He instantly made me feel so comfortable and confident, while his wife made me feel so beautiful. He is absolutely amazing in his photography and editing skills and I truly think there is nothing he cannot do. I cannot wait to continue to work with him on future shoots.

What is a favorite memory with Arnold Gaza?
Our very first shoot together. We did an all red shoot with my favorite Sherri Hill dress from Wedding Lace. The energy in the studio was just so much fun and it made for some great shots.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I feel like I can be a great role model to those my age and those younger than me. I want to build others up and show that there is nothing they cannot do without true dedication and knowledge.

What is the most exciting thing about being a senior this year?
The college search journey is the most exciting thing about being a senior this year! I have had so much fun researching different colleges and figuring out where I want to go that fits me the best. I will be attending the University of Kentucky in the fall of 2025!

What legacy do you hope you leave behind?
I hope to leave a legacy of stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. I would never have pursued my passions if it were not for stepping out of my comfort zone.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My greatest passion is anything agriculture or livestock-related. I have learned so much through being in 4-H, showing livestock, working at a feed store, and having hands-on experiences with local livestock breeders that my greatest passion is teaching those around me about what I love. I have taken on a role in my county and surrounding counties as a mentor for younger 4-H livestock members whom I help by sharing my knowledge of livestock. If you bring up livestock to me, be prepared to take a seat and pull out a notebook because lots will unfold.

Tell us more about your adventures in 4-H. How did you get started and where are you at with it now?
I have been in 4-H since I was 9 years old, showing rabbits. My dad showed rabbits in 4-H and when my parents bought me my first rabbit they decided I should enroll in 4-H. After being successful in rabbits for many years I decided it was time for a change, showing livestock. I was very successful my first year showing pigs so I wanted another challenge, so I decided to show goats and lambs. I have been very successful in my 4 years of showing livestock with 4 Grand Champions, 3 Reserve Champions, and 7 Overall Showmanship wins.

What do you love most about working with animals?
What I love most about working with animals is their personalities. Most people would not expect a pig to have so much personality, but they have as much personality as a dog, maybe even more. I have loved every animal I have raised for different reasons that I could talk about forever. Every animal I have raised has had a different personality, some are super sweet, and some are super stubborn. The stubborn ones have a special place in my heart as they push me to work even harder.

What do you enjoy sharing most as you mentor younger 4-H livestock members?
I enjoy sharing my daily care for my animals the most as it is very particular and tedious. Most people do not realize how much goes into the daily care of show livestock from feeding, training, exercising, to hair and skin care to maximize their overall appearance! Everything I do in the barn to prepare my animals for show has specific steps to help me achieve my goals and I love sharing these steps with others to help them achieve their goals!

What do you wish everyone knew about working with animals?
I always get the question, “How do you sell your animals for meat after you have bonded with them?”. Well, the answer is that it never gets easier, I do get bonded with these animals, but going into the project I have a mindset that the end goal for these animals is to provide someone with food. In the months I raised these animals they had the best life they could have. After I have achieved my goals of showing and winning with these animals they have their purpose to serve and that's the mindset you have to have.

What have you learned from working at the feed store?
Working at the feed store has taught me customer service skills as well as helping people figure out which feed will best help them achieve the goals of the animal they are feeding. There is a big difference between show livestock feed and farm livestock feed and I enjoy helping people find a feed that will help them achieve their goals.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My middle school years were very tough, I never fit in with the population at my school and developed great anxiety with little ways to cope. I tried participating in activities such as sports in hopes of making friends, but this only led to more exclusion and anxiety. I was lost and hopeless until I stepped into the pig barn for the first time. I began using showing pigs as a way to cope with my anxiety about school and friends. Instead of trying to fit in anymore, I chose to do what made me happy.

What else would you like to talk about?
While I have a love of showing livestock, I also have a strong passion for photography and graphic design. This past year alongside my art teacher at school, I helped create a club at my school for students with the same passion as myself. We use our talents and passion to create works of art for our peers, school, and community. This spring, many teachers nominated me for the Aurora High School Visionary Award for my efforts in creating this club and I was honored to be the recipient for the class of 2025.

What do you love most about the club you created?
What I love most about the club I have created is getting to see other students join the club to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. I also love getting to communicate with other students, staff, and community members to achieve the goals of the project they would like us to complete.

What tips would you give others who might want to start a club at their school?
I would tell others that if you have an interest, chances are others will have the same interest, but you have to be the bigger person to start the club. Having a passionate advisor is also a huge part of creating a club, mine being my photography and graphic design teacher.

What do you like taking pictures of the most and why?
I love taking pictures of athletes. You can tell such great stories with pictures of athletes whether on the sideline or action shots in the game. I also love the environment on the sidelines and in the dugouts. I have always loved sports, but was never very good at them so now I get to pursue my love of sports through my camera lens.

Tell us about a picture you took that you are extremely proud of.
This is a really hard question to answer as I do not believe I have an ultimate favorite picture I have taken, but there are a few pictures that I have taken that I love and am very proud of for the clear action shot of the sport, the emotion on the athletes face, and the rugged editing that I do to make the picture my own style.

What is your process for graphic design like?
For graphic design I use Adobe Photoshop and a lot of my graphics involve athletes. In my graphics, I use a lot of cutouts which are very tedious as I hand-select and erase everything myself. I also am very indecisive so I will create the same graphic in many different ways to see which one I like best!

What is the coolest thing you've created so far?
The coolest thing I have created so far was a 200-wins poster for our varsity football coach. Our athletic director brought me this project and I was so excited as I knew this would be a very big moment for our coach. After the game, I handed him the poster I created in front of the community and the football team. I was even spotted on Fox 8 as they were covering the playoff game. It was posted all over the community and I see it everywhere every day and it always makes me smile.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Davida and I go way back as we share an aunt, Aunt Kim! As long as I can remember Davinda has always been in my life and behind the camera that captures my life through pictures. Her amazing daughters used to babysit me and help me prepare for dance recitals. As I have known Davinda forever, I knew as soon as I heard about her developing a Teen Team that I would be the first to apply and the first to commit to doing my senior pictures with her.

My experiences with Davinda are some that I will forever cherish as they were always so fun and positive. The Teen Team was an inclusive group of beautiful young women my age that I got to spend time with, model, create memories, and spread positivity and inclusivity. I was one of two original members to do all three years of the Teen Team and proceed to be on the Senior Team as well. Being able to create friendships that would never have been sparked without Davinda's opportunities are cherished by all who step foot in front of her camera.

What I love most about Davinda and her photography is that no idea is too crazy. She is always up for a challenge when I bring them to her. Davinda was not familiar with capturing pictures of livestock until I called her wanting pictures of my pigs. I have shown pigs for four years and every year we have had pictures of myself with my pigs. Davinda has had her fair share of pig noses coming at the lens, even though this has pushed her out of her own comfort zone as a photographer!

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory with Davinda was this summer when she came to my fair and captured pictures of me and my livestock on the fairgrounds. We had always done pictures at my barn in the past, so this was way different. We took my lamb, Maverick, on a walk around the fairgrounds getting many different pictures and doing lots of tik toks. We took pictures with one of my pigs, Todd, with the Ferris wheel in the background. We even got a chance to sneak away and get a few surprise pictures of my brother and me for my mom.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine in hopes of spreading my story and leave an impact on those who read it, especially teen girls struggling with anxiety. I coped with my anxiety by raising and showing pigs which led a shy young girl to being a spokesperson and mentor for youth 4-H members around her, to starting a club at my school for my photography passion, to being the Aurora High School Visionary Award recipient. Branching out and doing something that makes you happy can lead to a lifetime of happiness and great accomplishments.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me binge-watching Criminal Minds with my mom and my dogs.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am so excited to attend the University of Kentucky with a major in Agricultural Economics.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I hope to have graduated from the University of Kentucky with my bachelor's degree and possibly working towards my master's degree while working for an agriculture company doing marketing and sales.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Spending time with my dog, Kix. Kix is a long-haired corgi and he is my pride and joy.

Nomination & Photography by Preslee McGough Photography
Issue 85 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Houston is the definition of an inspiring teen. Words that others use to describe her include, kind, driven, passionate, motivating, encouraging, beautiful and priceless. She is a senior at South Walton High School and in addition to her many extracurriculars and volunteer work, has been completing college coursework that will allow her to graduate high school with her associate's degree in arts. This senior is passionate about helping others and plans to continue her education at Auburn University to pursue her dreams of becoming a nurse anesthetist.

What has been your favorite memory as a senior so far?
My favorite memory as a senior has been soaking up all the time with my family and doing the little things with them that matter most. I enjoy going to all the breakfasts, sunrises, sunsets, dances, and games that seniors all do together. It is great to be able to experience this year with everyone.

What are you looking forward to next as a senior?
I am looking forward to being one step closer to becoming a nurse anesthetist. Going to college is going to be a great step forward and I am excited to be able to go to nursing school and have my family’s support to help me along the way. Being able to have a new change ahead is exciting and that is something I look forward to.

What extracurriculars mean the most to you?
Extracurriculars that align with my interests and career goals mean the most to me. Since I am aiming for a career in nursing, activities like volunteering at clinics or joining health clubs give me direct experience. Working with others helps build my confidence and communication skills, which are crucial in healthcare, while sports like volleyball help me develop teamwork skills and stay physically fit—both important in high-stress roles. These activities not only support my personal growth but also prepare me for the demands of a nursing career.

What leadership roles have you had?
I have had some natural leadership opportunities, especially through playing sports, like guiding newer players or motivating teammates during tough games. I have also had chances to step up in group projects and school events, where I helped organize tasks and support others. For me, leadership is not just about titles; it is about setting a good example, being dependable, and helping those around me. These experiences have taught me a lot and will serve me well as I work toward a future in healthcare.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would describe my leadership style as supportive and collaborative. I believe in leading by example, staying dependable, and encouraging others to bring their strengths to the team. I like to make sure everyone feels included and valued, so I focus on effective communication and try to be approachable when someone needs help or feedback. I am not overly authoritative—the best results come from working together and building trust. My goal as a leader is to create an environment where everyone feels motivated to do their best.

Where do you spend the most time volunteering and why?
I spend the most time volunteering in areas related to healthcare and community support, as these experiences align closely with my career goals and allow me to help others directly. Being involved in healthcare-related volunteer work gives me practical exposure and insight into the field, helping me build valuable skills for my future in nursing. Plus, volunteering in the community is rewarding because it allows me to give back and make a positive impact. It is a great way to connect with others and learn more about what it means to care for people in real-world settings.

How do you balance your high school studies with your college classes?
I am very thankful for the opportunity to be able to do dual enrollment and how easy the process of doing both has been. I go to just the college and complete those classes for my associates degree, but I have to take certain courses there to be able to make sure that my high school classes are also completed. It has been a challenging thing to manage both but staying on top of my work and studying has been the most important thing. It definitely takes some time to get used to just being in college, but it is worth it.

How did you decide on becoming a nurse anesthetist?
I knew I always wanted to be in the medical field of some sort, I just was not sure what. I started out wanting to be a veterinarian and then went to wanting to be a pediatrician and then to a physical therapist and now I have really set my mind on a nurse anesthetist. It is a wonderful way to help people and allow them to be safe during their surgery. Being a nurse in itself is a wonderful thing and there are many career paths you can advance to, but you will always have a nursing degree to come back to.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
An inspiring thing about me that is not mentioned in my nomination is my love for the outdoors. My love stems from the appreciation of nature and the peace it brings. Growing up around the water it has made me appreciate all things within the outdoors like fishing and duck hunting.

Tell us more about your fishing and duck hunting.
I got interested in hunting and fishing from my brother and my dad. Over the years we have been to Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee to duck hunt. It has been so fun experiencing all the states with my family and seeing how different every state is. We have fished multiple rodeos and a lot of the times just for fun but its always fun to go out for an entire day and catch something good.

What would you most like to talk about?
Something that I would most like to talk about is that I am truly passionate about helping people and making a positive impact in their lives. My faith is my guiding light providing me with the confidence to face challenges and inspire others. I believe that every small act of kindness can create a ripple effect of positivity. I strive to be a role model showing teens that they have the power to uplift themselves and those around them by embracing compassion dedication, we can all contribute to a brighter future.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Something I feel very enthusiastic about is God and my future in helping others. I feel like God has opened a lot of doors for me and giving me the opportunity to help others one day and give back is such a blessing.

Give an example of this.
An example of this would be when you have a troubling time with something God may close that door but open something even greater. He works in great ways and knowing that he is on your side is truly a great feeling.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most?
Preslee McGough is a family friend of mine and also the best photographer I have done a shoot with. She made it extremely comfortable to do all types of poses and was well prepared. I loved most that she traveled four hours with all of her stuff to get the most perfect shot. She really made it an amazing experience by being her.

What is a favorite memory you have with the person who nominated you?
My favorite memory with Preslee McGough was while doing the shoot we ended the shoot in the water, and she made it such a fun experience to do so. The shoot was so much fun and was so relaxing to do.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I would want to be in inspiring teens magazine to share my journey of Faith and dedication to helping others. I believe in the power of authentic stories to motivate and uplift young minds. Through this platform, I hope to connect with teens, encourage them to embrace their unique strengths, and inspire them to be positive changemakers in their communities. By sharing my experiences, I aim to show that they, too, can overcome challenges and pursue their passions with confidence.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had a completely free day, you would find me at the beach or exploring somewhere new. I love the mix of relaxing by the water, diving into an enjoyable book, and the thrill of discovering new spots and activities. I might also take the chance to get outdoors, whether it is a hike, a bike ride, or just a walk along the shore. Being active and surrounded by nature is my favorite way to spend time off—it is refreshing and helps me clear my mind.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Something that is coming up next for me is the start of a medical assistant program. I start this in December and have the ability to learn more about different things in the medical field. This is a wonderful opportunity to get more experience and have some background knowledge of things before going into nursing school.
