Kaitlin Robinson – Texas
Nomination and Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kaitlin Robinson is the most kind hearted person you will ever meet. She lights up any room she enters with not only her beautiful smile, but her infectious laugh and energy.
She has spent most of her life giving back to her school, community, and world. Last year, she started a club at school to make care packages to be delivered to the homeless and less fortunate. Kaitlin has played sports throughout her life and has been involved in many clubs and organizations with her school and church. But her heart is in helping those, either people or animals, that are less fortunate than she. She would rather give to someone than to have anything for herself. Her selfless acts from a very young age to now have always made her family extremely proud of her.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I am most proud of my volunteerism. I have always strived to give back to those less fortunate than myself. When I was in elementary school, I would ask my friends to donate money so I could purchase something for my teacher in lieu of birthday gifts.

Tell us about your love of volunteering. Where did it start and where are your favorite places to volunteer?
I have always loved to give back to my community and touch every heart I can reach. I want people to remember me as the girl who made them smile or feel welcomed wherever they are. When I was younger, I never asked for anything for Christmas or my birthday because I knew someone out there needed something more than I did. My first major volunteering opportunity was a toy drive for Ben Taub Children’s Hospital that my sister and I started coordinating every year on Good Friday. It was amazing to see the children’s faces light up when they received a new toy or coloring book! Moments like those are priceless and unforgettable.

What is the club you made at school for the homeless? How did you get it started and where is it now? How did Covid affect your efforts?
My junior year of high school I started a club, R.A.I.L, dedicated to helping the homeless community. R.A.I.L stands for Raising Awareness; Impacting Lives. If I could impact one person’s life for the better, my purpose would be fulfilled. I have always made care packages and dropped them off the local shelters or handed them out to men and women I see on the road. When my English teacher last year brought up the idea of starting a club, I jumped right on it! I was able to form a council and have our first few meetings before Covid-19 shut down our country. Sadly, no more was able to be done due to school closures and safety protocols. Hopefully soon I will be able to create a non-profit for R.A.I.L and continue on my journey!

Share your dance journey with us. What are your favorite types of dance to practice and what is a favorite memory or accomplishment with dance?
Last year I decided to try out for Legacies, the dance/drill team at my high school. I had never danced before this and was very nervous going into the prep week and auditions. I practiced every night until midnight that week and my mom and I prayed so hard that I would make the team. When I got my call back, I was ecstatic! I ended up making the team and the world of dance became more than I could have ever dreamed of. It has shaped me as a person and leader and helped me find my true self.
My favorite types of dance are contemporary, lyrical, and jazz. When the music moves through my body during a contemporary or lyrical piece, I feel like I have been transported to a different universe where it is only the music and I. Jazz is so energetic, and a sassy, fierce song has the most dramatic facials and sharp movements. I’ve always been a bubbly person and it is so great when I am able to just have fun and let loose with a dance.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I have had the opportunity to be inspired by some great leaders. I would love to speak to a group of young girls in leadership and empowerment. I feel that I have some lessons I’ve learned about goal setting that I would like to be able to pass on to others just starting their high school journey.

What is something you learned from a great leader that you have used through you to pass down to the next generation of great leaders?
One of the fabulous experiences I had as a part of the Legacies Dance Team was being able to attend a women’s empowerment talk. The guest speaker said two things that have always stuck with me and I pass them on to everyone, hoping they will get the same life changing affects it had on me. The first thing she said was “fake it until you become it”. I have been able to live as the best version of myself every day because I can wake up knowing that I want to help others and act on it! The second thing she taught me was to have a “power pose”. Whether it be your hands on your hips or lifting your head a little higher, have a pose that gives you the confidence to be who you want to be and not back down to anyone. I have always dealt with anxiety, so having a way to help empower myself in situations where I want to give in and hide has helped me overcome so many obstacles.

What are your greatest strengths as a leader?
As a leader, I imagine my greatest strengths to be my ability to empathize with others and stand my ground when situations get tough. I never want someone to feel unwelcome or sad around me and I will go the distance to make sure I put a smile on everyone’s face. I also do not have a problem with standing out or being negatively labeled when doing the right thing. If I’m not the coolest because I won’t do something I know is wrong that does not affect me and I hope others will be able to say no, or stand up for someone, if I have the courage to do so first. It’s hard to be the odd one out, especially as a teenager, but I make it a goal to set the trend for standing up for yourself and others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

In 5 years I will most likely be starting my first year of medical school. After high school I will be attending college to double major in Biomedical Science and Business. Once I graduate with my Bachelors Degrees I will attend medical school and finish out my residency, and then open my own plastic surgery practice. I would love to help others who have been in accidents feel good about themselves again. In today’s society people are easily judged based solely off their looks. It is easy to forget how amazing of a person you are inside when your morale is so low due to an outside perspective. Everyone should be confident in their own, beautiful skin!

Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person I have in my life is hands down my mother. As a single mom of two girls, I’m sure she has a rough time with my sister and I every once in a while. I would not have been able to accomplish anything I have without my very best friend and role model pushing me every day! My mom, Kathy Robinson, has dedicated herself to children her whole life. As a mother and elementary teacher, she impacts and shapes the lives of children everywhere. She is the most confident and true to self woman I know, and a fabulous role model for all. She has taught me everything in life, but the most important words she has instilled into me is that “you are enough”. She has led me to be the confident, well rounded young woman I am today. Without her I would not be in this magazine right now... without her I would not be anywhere. So thank you Mom, for always having my back and pushing me out of my comfort zone a little further. I love you ♥︎

Tell us about your dance career.
Dance is the art of expressing myself through the way that my body moves. My body is like my own instrument. I am able to make others feel emotion simply by the movement I make when I let the music take control. I can express sadness, joy, happiness, pain, frustration, and even anger. Dance is a universal language that you don’t have to speak to understand.
I began dancing when I was 3 years old. I love to entertain, and I've always known that the stage is where I want to be. My favorite style of dance is Jazz Funk. It can be fast or slow with syncopated beats to set any mood. My favorite memories are with LA Dance Magic’s Senior Company. I am in my fourth year of LADM Company and this year I am a part of Pro Track where I am the lead dance assistant at conventions and travel to different cities throughout the United States. This opportunity gives me insight into the dance industry and business world. I have gained friendships with dancers from all over the world. I will always cherish the memories of dancing and practicing until late at night with hotel restaurant food for dinner, sharing our goals, encouraging each other, and uplifting one another.
How has Covid changed dance for you?
The studio has always been a safe haven where I am free of judgment and constantly motivated. Dance has drastically changed but the passion will always be there for me. At the beginning of the pandemic, I spent much of my time practicing my choreography, stretching, and watching YouTube videos of dance classes. Kevin Durant once said, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. Not being able to go to the studio gave me the opportunity to work even harder. Now I am having virtual and in person classes being very cautious to follow the rules of wearing a mask and sanitizing my hands and the studio. It is all worth it to be able to do what I truly Iove.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is balancing dance and school. I love dance so much and I want to be a good student also. I work really hard at both and at an early age; I began connecting my expectations from dance to my expectations at school. This meant turning my work in on time, abiding by all classroom instructions, and staying out of trouble. I knew this behavior is what my dance teachers would expect of me outside of class. There were days when I wasn’t responsible, left my tights at home and unfortunately had to miss class, however, these experiences guided me to have the accountability of my mistakes.

Even as a senior in high school, I take pride in the discipline I have been taught throughout my dance years. I am responsible, accountable, and determined with my actions due to many of my experiences with dance. Most importantly, the people I surround myself with have never failed to be supportive. Although life is challenging, one must accept the challenge to become successful. Dance shaped me into the young woman that I am today and as I pursue my dance career, I hope to never lose who I am right now.

What is Legacy League?. What are your roles and responsibilities and what do you love most about it?
Legacy League is an organization made up of mothers and daughters who work together to fund raise and support philanthropies in our community. Several high school girls and I volunteer at the philanthropies to serve at events, sort and organize donations, and write letters to comfort senior citizens. My favorite philanthropy to volunteer for is iGoPink where we create encouraging cards and gift bags for breast cancer fighters and survivors. I experienced the loss of my aunt to breast cancer last year and started a fund for donations to IGoPink in my aunt’s name. I am very sad to say that IGoPink closed its doors due to the pandemic.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice is to put God first in your life. Always stay focused, stay positive even when things are not going well, be dedicated, and don’t let anyone tell you can’t do something. Be true to yourself and not follow others but be lead by your own passion and drive to become who God’s leads you to be.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I plan to start my professional dance career after completing college. I plan to dance in commercials, movies, television shows, and music videos. My biggest goal is to dance on tour with a major music artist. I love to perform and entertaining a huge audience is the kind of work I want to be doing in my future. I see myself traveling the world doing what I love. Possibly even teaching dance to young dancers who have the same dream as I do.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is singing. I often break out in song and get weird looks because it is so unexpected to hear such a great voice come out of me. My mom and friends say I will get discovered one day.

Picture
Photography by NA

Who do you find inspiring?
My mother has always been my biggest advocate throughout my life. I am inspired by her dedication, determination, and optimistic attitude that she puts forth in all situations. Growing up, I have always aspired to be a commercial dancer in California. From an early age, I loved to entertain and perform in front of audiences. My mother has supported me through every dance competition, dance performance, and dance convention. Her love and support have impacted the way I have grown as both a dancer and a person. At late age, my mother went back to college to achieve her goal of a Master's degree. This has shown me the importance of continuing one's dreams until they are met by never giving up. My mother has also shown me what a role model looks like and how I can encourage others to accomplish whatever they desire.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my passion inspires others. I put my best into everything I do whether it is volunteering, my class work, teaching preschool students, or dancing. I make sure I have done my very best to complete every task with care, dignity, respect, and perseverance. I am a hard worker and I take pride in everything I do. I think others see this and are inspired by it.

Delaini Hanna - Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Becky Hanna
Photography by Imagery By Carissa
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Delaini Hanna is a senior student and athlete who, despite obstacles, keeps a positive perspective! She aspires to earn a scholarship pole vaulting; a literal high bar, but after missing last spring and a surgically reconstructed ACL from tearing it in a volleyball playoff game, this goal is high up there! With a smile and positive attitude, she amazes me every day as she battles through rehab to be back for track, “if it’s God’s will, it will happen!” She is an inspiration to her peers, teammates, and even competitors because of her positivity and tenacity through adversity!
Picture
Photography by Imagery By Carissa

How are you overcoming your struggle with your ACL surgery as a senior?
Physically, I go to therapy three days a week. I’m blessed to have terrific care from my surgeon to my therapy; everyone is committed to the goal of getting me pole vaulting by district track. It’s been a lot more challenging mentally; I attempt to stay positive and believe God has a reason for all things. I know I am going to enjoy and appreciate the rewards more after working harder than I ever have to reach them!

How has covid affected your recovery?
Surgery was delayed pending a negative Covid test. I have to wear a mask at therapy which makes it very hard to breath. In our county masks are required when unable to socially distance. Because my dad is my coach, training for pole vaulting isn’t as challenging with Covid restrictions since we’re members of the same household. The greatest challenge with Covid was the inability to compete last season; although, I recognize that was the case for my competition too!
Picture
Photography by Becky Hanna

Tell us more about your pole-vaulting career.
I was 4 when I first put a short pole in the box and let my dad sling me into the pit, so you could say it was love at a low height.  As a freshman I made it to regionals and got third-one place away from making it to state. My sophomore year I beat my personal best jump of 10 foot and qualified for the state competition.
Due to covid I was unable to complete my junior year. Competing at the state track meet is my greatest accomplishment; it’s definitely a family affair-my two uncles and my sister have all competed/vaulted at the state level! I was humbled to be blessed to uphold the legacy.
Picture
Photography by Becky Hanna

What is the hardest thing about pole vaulting that people may not realize?

Vaulters have to work every day over the course of many years in order to reach new heights. Besides being a long-term commitment, people don’t realize what vaulting requires; resources like poles and equipment to train are very costly. It is also critical to have a knowledgeable coach. Additionally, the vaulter has to be fearless. I’ve heard my whole life, “you have to be a little crazy to vault,” and I admit it’s not natural to put your body several feet in the air on a tiny tall stick upside down, so I accept being crazy because I enjoy vaulting.

Delaini Hanna - This is a painting I did for a family friend that works in the oil field. It is currently hanging up in the main Wilson Operating office in Archer City, Tx.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love painting; my favorite creation is an oil field related silhouette with a glowing sunset in the background.

What is it like to be a Hispanic woman with hopes of becoming a lawyer? What steps have you already taken for your future and what goals do you have?
Living in El Paso, Texas has helped me feel more included in the field of law as many of the female lawyers I know are Hispanic like myself. I’m very blessed to be in an environment like this because it’s women like myself who at times get their abilities questioned due to our gender and ethnicity. Some steps that I took were joining the UTEP High School Law Camp which introduced me to Borderland Teen Court and the Women’s Bar Association.

How do you hope to inspire young girls like yourself?
With the help of social media, I would love to be a guest speaker once I have graduated Law School and had a few years of experience as a lawyer. I will take my past experiences and obstacles that were thrown my way to show them that anything is possible, it would be great to travel around the world and give talks to young girls or even start my own group of young girls with hopes of becoming a lawyer.

Tell us more about Borderland Teen Court. How did you get involved and what are your roles and responsibilities as president?
Borderland Teen Court is a nonprofit organization that was created by teenagers. High school students with hopes of becoming lawyers get a chance to be in action in the court room by playing the role of prosecutor or defendant when a juvenile has plead guilty of a class c misdemeanor. As president I was able to write the new Constitution. Alongside the rest of the board, we were able to come up with a solution to shifting to Zoom. Being president has taught me how to lead while being able to take everyone’s feelings into mind and being the person people can trust.

What is being a mentee the El Paso Women's Bar Association? How did you get involved and what have been your biggest achievements or rewards as part of this organization?
I was introduced to the mentee program in the El Paso Women’s Bar Association from the UTEP High School Law Camp, with the program I now have a mentor who will help guide me in my journey to Law School. It’s an amazing opportunity because I was partnered with an amazing woman who has done so much in her life, the program just started but I am so excited to see what the future holds for me in the El Paso Women’s Bar Association.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Besides being the president of Borderland Teen Court I have also been a ballerina for 15 years. Being a part of the dance world tends to cause emotional distress on a person, but I have been able to overcome the expectations that society puts on a ballerina.

Mackenzie Essner – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Angie Reed
Photography by Kevyn Ryan Photography
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Mackenzie Essner is an inspiring teen because of her dedication to serving her community. She has volunteered with a Special Needs Cheerleading team for 6 years and at a Summer Camp for Special Needs children for 5 years. She is currently serving as President of a volunteer organization where she volunteers with Meals on Wheels, Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Assistance Ministries and A Smart Rescue.
In addition to her volunteering she is the Captain of her Cheerleading Team, National Honor Society Member, is in FFA where she has raised chickens and a pig and has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten.
Picture
Photography by Kevyn Ryan Photography

You volunteer for a lot of different organizations. Which was your first and how/why did you get started?
I started volunteering at my competitive cheerleading gym with their special needs cheer team in the division “CheerAbilities.” At the time I was around 12 years old and this position was offered to me by my mother who thought it would be something I enjoyed. I was nervous and standoff-ish at first because I felt like I was the only one who did not know what I was doing. Turns out you don’t need to know what you’re doing because helping with these kids came like second nature to me. I am greatly thankful for my mother’s ability to know me better than I know myself because now, at almost 18 years old, I have a paid coaching position with these special needs athletes including tumbling classes and cheerleading.

What is the volunteer organization you are president of, and what are your roles and responsibilities?
I currently serve as the 2020-2021 President of a mother-daughter philanthropic organization called Junior Guild. I previously served as the Sophomore Coordinator and Parliamentarian. As President, I run our monthly general meetings, create meeting plans, write our newsletters, and encourage others to exceed their volunteer hour expectations. As a member of Junior Guild, I complete volunteer hours with our Philanthropies, help plan and execute our three annual formal events, and participate in fundraising.

What is a favorite memory from volunteering?
In the summer of 2019, I was volunteering at Camp Blessing Texas, which is a summer camp that accommodates special needs individuals. I was serving my first year as a junior counselor where I was assigned a camper to care for the rest of the week. My camper was wheelchair bound, non-verbal, and fed through a G-tube. She had a hard time sleeping through the night and at the end of our 3rd day together she was exhausted, frustrated, and overall, in a bad mood. After talking to her and letting her release some frustration, we headed inside to join the other campers in the annual luau. She loved getting out of her chair and being held in order to dance. The joy on her face said everything words would never be able to, and through the duration of the luau we danced, laughed, and played together before heading back to our cabin and off to bed. Even though the day was not the best to start out, it ended with such a beautiful moment I was lucky to share with my camper.

What does being a leader in your community mean to you and what do you think is your strongest attribute as a leader?
To me, being a leader means more than telling people what to do and how to do it. A leader should be someone who sets a positive example to their peers and others around them. This kind of leadership requires not only setting a good example when you think people are watching but doing the right thing even when no one is holding you accountable. Integrity is something that a good leader should possess, and I am proud to say this quality is what prevails as my strongest leadership trait.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Consistency, growth, and just putting yourself out there is where it starts. Throughout my high school career, I have volunteered about 900 hours in my community, as big as this number sounds, it just started with one hour. When you are constant, one hour turns into two, then three, then before you know it you've made a difference in the community whether it's big or small.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
After ideally graduating from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental science in the spring of 2025, I will be starting my career as an Environmental Compliance Inspector where I will inspect anything from large corporations to small companies on their ability to comply with environmental laws, ordinances, and regulations.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Something kinda silly I do to pass the time when I’m bored is watch and create TikToks. Over the last year I have grown a small following for myself of 10k followers on the app. TikTok is a form of social media used to share videos between 15 and 60 seconds long; they can be entertaining, informative, and can be a great way to express yourself.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
From being center dancer in my cheerleading routines, to two-stepping out with friends, I have always had a knack for dancing. So, I would say my hidden talent is dancing.

3 Things on your bucket list
My number one bucket list goal is definitely to earn an Aggie ring from Texas A&M. Number two would be to travel somewhere outside of the country, and number three is to learn American Sign Language.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my past AP Environmental Science teacher, Ms. Thompson super inspiring. She is fluent in Korean from spending her summers overseas teaching children who don't have easy access to education. Without a second thought Ms. Thompson has made a long-lasting impact on her students and the world they will grow up to live in. She is so passionate about what she does and makes sure her students know their worth and what they can do to make a difference. She has taught me everything I know about environmental science and sparked the passion I have for it now. She is one of the most selfless people I know and never fails to disappoint.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my steadfast way of loving is what makes me inspiring. I care for everything and everyone so deeply and just want to aide and love those around me because I believe everyone deserves to have someone like that. Everything I have exhibited in my life including my volunteer work, leadership, selflessness, and passion to help those around me stems from love. Love is what makes the world go around no matter what that love is for, but love for the good things in life is what creates passion and inspiration.

Ashleigh Wells

Ashleigh Wells – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Lyons Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I am nominating Ashleigh today for her passion for dance and how she inspires others around her. I have known Ashleigh for about two years now. From our first shoot together to our most recent, she has grown a lot as a dancer and a person. She is a joy to be around and is a role model for those around her. The younger dancers at her studio love working with her and treat her like their big sister. She is hard working and loves to dance. She also teaches the younger kids at her studio how to dance as well. I look forward to watching her grow and share her passion in the years to come.

Please share with us your dance journey. How and why did you start and where are you with it now?
I started dance at the age of three at Dance Workshop. Before I started dance, all I wanted to do was dance. I would tap my feet and stand on counter tops anytime music came on. After my first dance class it felt meant to be. I have never stopped dancing since. I have competed in more dance competitions I can count, and I have been to the World Finals of Youth America Grand Prix four times in New York City.

What do you love so much about dance?
Dance allows me to express emotions I wouldn’t know how to deal with without dance. It’s almost like a therapy in a way. I also love dance because of its athletic nature. I’m able to stay active and fit while also staying flexible and healthy. Another reason I love dance is because of the discipline you learn in different dance styles/classes.

Picture
Photography by Lyons Photography

What styles of dance do you study, and which is your favorite? Why?
I study ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern, tap, and pointe. My favorite is ballet for sure! Ballet is the root of all styles. Without some sort of ballet training, you won’t make it in the dance industry. Ballet is the one style you have to take if you want a career in dance.

What ages/styles of dance do you teach? How has teaching influenced your dancing?
I teach ages 6-12 in the styles jazz, contemporary, modern, and ballet. Teaching has completely changed the way I look at dancing. It has taught me not to stress as much during master classes or just in any classes really. I used to get so caught up in what the teachers thought of me and if I was exactly how they wanted me to be. Now that I teach, I understand that all teachers really want is to see that you care, and they just want the best for you. Yes, teachers may seem harsh at times, but it all comes from their hearts and wanting you to succeed.

Picture
Photography by Lyons Photography

What legacy do you want to leave behind for this younger generation of dancers?
I want to leave a legacy of supporting my peers. I have struggled with jealousy issues in the past, and they taught me that I am getting nowhere by tearing down others to make myself feel better. When I support my peers’ success, I’m boosting my peers’ confidence, and I’m showing others the right way to act when someone else succeeds no matter how jealous you may be.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment with dance?
When I was 11, my solo qualified for the Youth America Grand Prix World Finals in New York City. This is a huge deal in the dance world. I was given lots of opportunities to get scholarships and summer/winter intensive invites through this experience. I was actually accepted into The Rock School for Dance Education Summer Program through one of the master classes I took at the World Finals.

Picture
Photography by Lyons Photography

Do you watch dance shows or movies? Which are your top favorites?
My top two favorite dance movies of all time would have to be Center Stage and Step Up! My favorite dance show would have to be Dance Moms! The movies and the show don’t really showcase how the dance world really works that well, but they are super entertaining and fun to watch! I totally recommend!

Peyton Eanes

Peyton Eanes – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Delynn Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: It is with great honored that I recommend Peyton Eanes as strong candidate for your consideration. I am awed by Peyton's success – both by her academic and athletic achievements and how she demonstrates her love for others through service. Her progress through high school is most impressive including her academic achievements and her maintaining the highest GPA for three years. Her academic diligence is proof that she will be a trustworthy and competent candidate.
Peyton is hardworking, reliable, determined, responsible, invested, focused, and intelligent. She has strong values that she will not compromise. This has aided her development as a leader. Her leadership resume includes positions such student council president, varsity cheerleader, volleyball captain, sports camp coach, and preteen camp counselor. Peyton understands the importance of her education and firmly grasps the value of a community service and teamwork logging over hundreds of volunteer hours.
Peyton has excelled in school and in the community– it would take pages to list her successes. I have had the opportunity to interact with her on a regular basis and during this time, I have observed Peyton's leadership, her mature discernment, and her ability to thoughtfully verbalize complex concepts. I have also seen her apply these to her life.
She is most deserving of your consideration. I give her my highest recommendation as you seriously consider her as a strong candidate.

How have you achieved the highest GPA for three years at your school? What or who do you attribute your drive for academic excellence?
As a child, my parents pushed me to academic excellence. By instilling high scholastic standards in me at a young age, they helped me form good habits and make good grades. Achieving the highest GPA for my first three years of high school and, hopefully, my last year as well has not been easy. I have spent many hours studying when I wanted to be out with friends or watching Netflix, but I know it will all be worth it to get into the college of my dreams. Setting time aside every day to study is essential, but the main thing is not being too hard on yourself when you fail and try again next time.
Picture

You've had many leadership roles. Which is the most noteworthy/memorable, and why?

My most memorable and favorite leadership memory is being a summer camp counselor at Trinity Pines Baptist Encampment. For three summers in a row, I got to attend a pre-teen overnight camp and lead a group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade girls. It is my absolute favorite event of the summer because I get to teach these girls about the love of Christ and show them how to love and build each other up. We always spend hours talking, playing sand volleyball, swimming in the lake, and doing all the fun activities planned out for them. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my girls make everlasting memories and build lifelong friendships.

What do you think is one thing every great leader should do?
Listening to what the people around you are saying is probably the most important thing a leader can do. Without hearing what they think and adjusting how you lead to fit the group, you can never be an outstanding leader. Leading only by doing what you believe to be the best can lead to discontent followers and a weak work ethic. By listening to the people's opinions and suggestions and adapting the way you teach, you can become a great leader that inspires everyone they meet.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Study hard, have fun, relax every now and then, and enjoy life!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five year years, I plan to be finishing up my doctor of physical therapy and looking for a job. Hopefully, I will be able to start by working as a physical therapist at a major university such as the University of Texas at Austin and then work my way up to the NFL or NBA

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to go scuba diving, go on a road trip through every state, and look out over Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

She is always open to exploring new ideas and try new things. Her love for animals is being fostered by being a member of Klein Collins FFA, where she is raising 3 lambs and a goat! Tell us about your cheer career. How and when did you start up until who you cheer for now and what you love about cheer so much?

Cheerleading has quite literally been a lifelong commitment for me. I began cheerleading when I was only three years old, and my first coach took me under his wing. He pushed me to be the best athlete I could possibly be and didn’t take anything less from me. I competed on his teams until junior high when I was eleven or twelve years old and I decided to pursue school cheerleading. I was burnt out, exhausted, and getting injured left and right, so my parents and I decided school cheer might be the better route for me. I then moved from the town of Vidor, TX to Spring, TX where I continued my cheerleading career and am still doing so on the Klein Collins Cheerleading Team. I love that cheerleading is my safe space, no matter what else is happening in life I know I can be successful in my sport.

What is one favorite memory from cheer?
If I had to choose one, I would say my all-time favorite moment from cheerleading would have to simply be touchdowns. There is no other feeling like watching your friend run into the endzone, scoring a touchdown, then turn to your teammates and seeing everyone’s huge smiles while being embraced in an unforgettable hug. Those moments are memories I will carry with me forever.

Please share with us about your love for FFA. What are your roles and duties in it and what is a major accomplishment you have felt as a result of belonging?

I have been a member of the FFA since my sophomore year, and I am now a senior. I raise lambs and goats through FFA, compete in CDEs, and I am currently working towards my CVA. I am incredibly passionate about animals, so naturally, I take the most pride in the animals I raise. However, it is not the pretty ribbon at the end of the livestock show that I am proud of. It is my hard work being paid off through my animals behaving as they should during the livestock show, and being able to show off the connection we’ve made as well as the hard work I had put into them the previous months.

What is Legacy League and what responsibilities do you have with it? What do you love most about being a member?
Legacy League is a volunteer organization created for the bonding of mothers and daughters. As a member of Legacy League, I am expected to attend meetings, attend events like Fashion Show and Legacy Ball, and acquire at least 15 hours of community service.
There are two aspects of Legacy League that I especially love. First, I love that it gives me the opportunity to connect with and serve my community. Lastly, I love that it allows me and my mom to spend time together since quality time is easily lost within our busy schedules.

What are your plans for college?
For college, I plan to attend Tarleton University in Stephenville, TX. This school targets my passions, animals, and cheer. Tarleton has a prosperous D1 cheer team and has a huge name in agriculture.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to stand strong in your morals and beliefs, and keep your head up because you never know what’s coming your way.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I expect to still be in college, working towards my doctorate degree to become a certified veterinarian. However, I expect to be working at a vet’s clinic as a technician.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

If I had to present anything to my peers I suppose it would have to do with animals because I have learned much knowledge about them and could give a passionate speech.

3 things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list would be sky diving, swimming in a shark cage, and having the opportunity to travel the world to learn about and see all the different species of animals.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my favorite Ag teacher, Mr. Resendez inspiring, because he never backs down from a challenge and always puts his students first as humanly possible. I’m extremely grateful to have him in my life as a role model.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I inspire others due to my hardworking nature, ability to persevere through the hardest of challenges, and nonapologetic personality.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I keep my schedule straight even though I am busy by being sure to lay out all of the day’s tasks and focusing on one thing at a time.

Emma Moore

Emma Moore - Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by
Angie Read Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Emma Moore is an inspiring young woman, a positive example for both teens and young adults, who are challenged with the demands of our world today.
In today's world, teens are held to high expectations and have heavy demands placed on them, like performing well in school, navigating social media, and finding their tribe. In our fast-paced world, some teens can struggle with all of these demands.
Emma inspires others with her actions and attitude, showing how to balance all these demands, all while achieving academic excellence, helping to support the surrounding community through volunteerism, and maintaining her Christian faith. And she does it all with style and grace.

What are your favorite volunteer activities and why?
My favorite volunteer activities are NAM Meals on Wheels and playing bingo with the residents at Paradise Springs Assisted Living Center. For NAM Meals on Wheels, we deliver meals to people who are homebound or who are not able to afford groceries or meals. One of my favorite experiences of doing Meals on Wheels was when we delivered meals to a lady who told us that her family was out of town. She was so glad that we had stopped by because she was super lonely and wasn’t able to get her own groceries. It made me so happy to see her smile, because I knew that I had made her day better and in turn, she made my day a lot better. It’s always the little things that can impact someone the most! I also love playing bingo with the residents at Paradise Springs because it is so fun getting to interact with all the residents. They really get into the bingo game and it’s just really great to be able to put a smile on their faces.

What do you love about volunteering?
What I love most about volunteering is being able to make someone’s day better and making an impact in my community. As teenagers, I think that we can sometimes get stuck in a loop of only caring about ourselves and volunteering has helped me to see from other people’s points of views. Because of my work as a volunteer, I have been able to learn humility and can see what other people deal with every day. The greatest part, though, is that volunteering is rewarding on both sides; by volunteering I am able to improve someone else’s day and their happiness in turn makes me happy and feel warm inside.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

Why should others get involved in volunteering?
Everyone should experience volunteering at some point in their life because it can make you a better person and help you to see how even small acts of kindness can make a huge impact on the world. I think that especially in our world today with social media, we have become very shallow and tend to only care about ourselves and don’t understand how our actions impact others. Acts of service help us to see what others who are less fortunate than ourselves go through and open our hearts to humility and compassion toward complete strangers.

What is your biggest struggle this year and how are you overcoming it, or how did you overcome it?
In March when the pandemic started, what we considered “normal” completely changed in the blink of an eye. I think just adjusting to the idea of this “new world” that we are living in has been the hardest part for me. Social interaction has completely changed, and everything is so different than what we’ve been used to. It has been hard to adjust to all the changes but talking to my friends and family has really helped me to feel some type of normalcy. Just having friends and family be there for me has helped me a lot during these changing times and I am super thankful for them.

Picture

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself in medical school. I plan on going to medical school to become a neurologist because I want to help people with mental illnesses. My grandpa, who I was really close to, recently passed away. He had Alzheimer’s which is a horrible mental disease that affects many people around the world. There is not a lot known about the cause of it or how to treat it. Because of the experience that my family and I had with my grandpa, I know how much it can impact people’s lives and how devastating it can be for the entire family. I want to help other families so that they might not have to go through what my family went through.

3 Things on your bucket list:
3 things on my bucket list are travelling the world, visiting New York City during Christmas time, and meeting Harry Styles.

Tianna Geiger – Texas

Nomination and Photography by MyJdProductions
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: If you ask anyone to describe Tianna in one word, it would be kind. She is known for being a friend to everyone and always having a big smile on her face. She is very involved in school, playing volleyball, basketball, tennis, track, running cross country, and dancing competitively, while also being a member of National Junior Honor Society. She is inspiration to others by always having a positive attitude, being such a hard worker, and never being afraid to try something new.

Tell us what sports you are currently playing/practicing and which you dedicate the most amount of time with. Do you play them all for school or are you on other teams as well?
Besides dance, I am currently playing volleyball and basketball. I just finished up cross country season and will do track and tennis in the spring. Those are all school sports, and I play basketball for a select team as well.

What is a favorite memory from one of the sports you play?
One of my favorite memories from one of the sports I play is from track season last year when I was running the 2400m. I wasn’t feeling good and didn’t start as well as I usually do and was in 8th place. But I refused to give up and kept pushing myself. The last straight away, I gave it all I had, and ended in 2nd place!

When did you start dancing and what is your favorite type of dance?
I started dancing when I was two years old, and this will be my seventh year to dance competitively. My favorite style of dance is contemporary.

Picture
Photography by Nina Price

Please share a favorite memory from dance.

My favorite dance memory is when our dance team went to Disney World last year to perform. It was also my little sister’s first year to dance competitively so it was so fun to share that memory with her and how excited she was.

Why is being a member of NJHS important to you?
Being a member of NJHS is important to me because it not only recognizes academic achievement, but leadership and character achievement as well, and challenges me to maintain my academics at that level. It also challenges me to be more involved in school activities and community service.

What is something new you tried this year? Tell us about it.
Something new I tried this year was volleyball. I have never played before, and I didn’t decide I wanted to play until a week before tryouts. I knew I had a lot to learn in a short amount of time. I worked every night the week before tryouts, sometimes staying after basketball practice until after 10pm.

Your nomination mentions you are known for being a friend to everyone and always having a smile on your face. How can others follow this example?
From the time I was little, I always have treated people as I would want to be treated. It’s something my parents taught me, and I’ve always followed it. And if someone is having a bad day, it may just take a smile in the hall to let them know that they have someone that cares about them.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Trust in God, work hard, always try your best, and don’t be afraid to try new things.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself in college studying to be a counselor. I also want to dance for the dance team for whatever college I attend.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity or pastime is spending time with my family and friends.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I could present a topic to a group of my peers, it would be to not be afraid to try new things and also, that it is okay to fail. The most important thing is to just try your best and to never give up on yourself. Sometimes we can be our own toughest critic, but always believe in yourself and have faith in God.

3 Things on your bucket list
•Swim with dolphins
•Snorkel in the Bahamas
•Visit Niagara Falls

Who do you find inspiring?
Many people have inspired me in my life. I have been blessed with amazing parents, grandparents, family, teachers, and coaches.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my positive attitude inspires others. I think I am inspiring to others because I’m not afraid to try something new and work hard for it.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
It definitely can be a challenge at times. There are some days where I go from early morning volleyball practice, to school, to cross country practice, to dance, to basketball practice, and then have to come home and do homework. I just try to plan ahead on my schoolwork so I never get behind.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
If I were to be interviewed, I would like to talk about my family, hunting, or softball.

Tell us about your family and what you love about spending time with them.

I’ve grown up as an only child with my parents, Alvin and Amy. My dad has taught me how to do the things I love the most, which is playing softball and hunting. My mom has grown to be one of my best friends. She is my number one supporter in everything I do. I just love being around my family.

When did you start hunting, who do you hunt with, and what all have you hunted for?
I’ve hunted for as long as I can remember. My parents started taking me to the deer lease with them when I was just a toddler. Mom told me the first time I went hunting, I sat in the stand with her. I was only 3 and she just wanted me to be able to see deer in the wild. She didn’t think we would actually see anything because, well, toddlers aren’t quiet. But we did see a doe and I told my mom to shoot it. I actually shot my first deer when I was 6 and I’ve been hooked ever since. For years I have hunted in the same stand with my dad, but now, since I’m older I hunt by myself. For the most part, I just hunt deer and pigs.

Picture
Photography by KMcMinn Photography

Please share one of your best memories from hunting.
One year we had pictures of this unique deer and I decided that he was the one I wanted to harvest. I named him GMF (Grand Master Funk). His antlers were really crazy looking. He had been seen at my dad’s stand several times, so I sat with Dad in hopes that he would walk in. We sat in the same stand for 3 days (morning and evening hunt) and I never saw him. The next day dad and I decided to change stands and mom sat in dad’s stand. Well, GMF came to the feeder while mom was sitting there. She texted me and asked me what I wanted her to do…shoot him or let him walk and risk not seeing him again. I was hesitant but told her to shoot. She did and we looked for him for hours and never found him. (I thought she might have missed). The next morning, I sat in Dad’s stand and the first deer that walked in was GMF. I was able to shoot him after all. When we got to him, we saw a mark where mom’s bullet had grazed his belly.

When did you start playing softball, what position do you play and what do you love most about being on your team?
I was only 4 when I started playing. I’ve been on several different teams and played out field, catcher, and now I’ve found my favorite spot on the field, First Base. I love being part of the softball team because we are like a family. I wouldn’t be able to get through some of my hard days if it wasn’t for my teammates.

Tell us about your faith in God. What do you want others to know about it?
I became a Christian when I was 6 years old. I consider it the most important decision anyone could ever make. I want others to know that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. I hope when people look at me they can see Jesus through me.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have always had a heart for special needs students. I love seeing them be successful and I love being able to help them and encourage them.
I have a hard time describing myself, so I asked a few people who know me best.
One of my family friends described me by saying, "Kelsi has one of the kindest hearts I’ve ever seen. She genuinely cares for others and wants to see them succeed and that is rare. She has treated my daughter, who is much younger than her, so well over the years and has always watched out for her. Went to bat for her, protected her behind the scenes, so to speak, never looking for any type of recognition or thanks. Just doing what a good person does, what a true friend does. I have told my wife on several accounts that I hope and pray our daughter grows up with the same character as Kelsi. I can’t brag on her enough. She’s just that one in a million person that comes along and I’m very glad that we get to have a little piece of her in our lives." (Tom Edwards)
My softball coach described me by saying, "Kelsi is truly an inspiring young lady because not only does she always believe in herself, but she also believes in others. Kelsi is constantly pushing herself to be better at all times, whether it’s on the softball field, in the classroom or in a leadership role for the team, school, or community. One example of this is when we had a foreign exchange student from Spain decide to join our team last year. She had never played softball before and spoke little English, but she wanted to be a part of something while she was here. Kelsi gladly took her under her wing and spent extra time after practices and even on some weekends to help her learn to throw, catch, and hit. I know that Kelsi’s actions inspired all of us." (Nineveh Blankenship)
My teacher and student council advisor describes me by saying, "Kelsi is one of those students whom every teacher and advisor loves. She is not only a wonderful student, she is also a fantastic young lady. Although she is now in high school, she is one young lady I will always keep up with and will continue to follow. To describe Kelsi is very hard to put into words. She inspires so many that she is around. What I find so unique about this characteristic is that in the time when teenagers are so easily influenced by their peers or the media, Kelsi seems to take it all in and keep only what will help to accomplish her goals set before her. Another characteristic that should be stressed is that she is a hard worker. She has a way of getting others to work and accomplishes this with a positive attitude. She goes above and beyond in all of her school work, student council and all aspects of her life." (Kim Taylor)

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

One of the hardest things I have accomplished throughout the years would be starting on the varsity softball team my freshman year in a brand new position that I had never played before. I worked really hard to learn the position, stayed for extra practice, took lessons, and made sure the coaches knew that I was willing to work to earn the position.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Put your faith in God and He will help you through all the trials of life that He puts in front of you. Having God also reminds you that you're not alone in anything you do.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
My plans after high school are to go to college and get into nursing school, so I can become a Neonatal Nurse.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Besides playing softball and hunting, I really enjoy hanging out with my friends. My best friends names are Emma and Bailey and we are inseparable...we are more like sisters than anything!

3 Things on your bucket list
⁃ Jump out of an airplane with my dad.
⁃ Swim with the pigs in the Bahamas.
⁃ In time, be the best mom I could possibly be to my children.

Who do you find inspiring?
I think my mom is inspiring.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think work ethic and my ability to show empathy for others inspires people around me. I think I'm inspiring because I’m willing to put in whatever it takes to get the outcome I want.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
Sometimes it gets very crazy around my house. But my focus is always on school so I can keep my grades up and stay up to date on my schoolwork. When it comes to doing all my hobbies, they are at different times of the year. So in the fall I hunt and in the spring I play softball.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I have a puppy named Hank he is a Miniature Schnauzer. I got him for Christmas in 2019 and ever since he has been my little shadow.

Nomination and Photography by Katie Ray Photography
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ainslee Harvey is a fighter! She is brave, courageous, fierce, bold, genuine, good as gold, loving, inspiring. She had her 3rd heart surgery this past February. She is quarantined at home her senior year and is still thriving at school, an NHS officer and much more! She continues to have a positive outlook on life and I continue to be inspired by her!

Being a heart patient has affected everything in my life. I have to work twice as hard in dance and get through schoolwork even when I can barely form coherent thoughts. It’s a lot of doctors’ appointments, drinking water, and pain. It’s getting up every day and knowing that I made through the day before, I made it through the night, and I can make it through today. It’s coming to terms that my experiences are and never will be, “normal”. But I think normal is overrated anyway. It’s knowing that I’m a fighter and that I have to keep fighting in order to live my life.

The school year has been rough. This is definitely not how I pictured my senior year but the only thing I can do is continue to give it my all and hope that I’ll be able to eventually leave my house and go to college in person come the fall.

I’m also very involved in my journalism department in school. I work in the yearbook, newspaper, and broadcast areas. Being a heart patient means that if I’m having a bad day physically that someone comes with me to interview or record. Other than that, they make sure I’m doing okay and we continue to work. My classmates and teacher are all amazing and I’m so grateful to be able to work with them.

I mostly read fiction, though if a topic really interests me, I will read non-fiction. I really love all genres fantasy, sci-fi, retellings, paranormal, mystery, historical, really just anything that falls under fiction. As for choosing a favorite book, I don’t think I can. They’re all so different and I really love them all.

The Nomination: Sofia Perin enjoys teaching children's Bible school, photography, forensic science, has been named chief editor for her school yearbook, and has received early acceptance into Tarleton State University's Pre-Vet program.
I am so proud of Sofia! She inspires my family and I because while life has thrown her many challenges that would be difficult for even an adult, she has faced each one with optimism and maturity. Sofia does not get caught up in judgement and popularity but instead lives life true to herself, embracing her uniqueness, encouraging others to do the same. Sofia is determined, passionate, and caring.

Tell us about your love of photography.
As a child I would take my mom’s phone and create scenes with my stuffed animals so I guess you could say I have always had a love for taking pictures and capturing special moments what people wouldn’t normally stop and admire. My main focus is nature and it’s beauty but I have recently had experience taking portrait pictures, however taking pictures of nature is my strong suit. On my 15th birthday I was gifted a canon camera from my grandma because she knew I had only been using my phone and wanted me to have the full picture taking experience by using a camera. Although my camera is known for being a beginner camera, I have taken some wonderful photos. Thanks to my grandma I learned my way around a camera and can now take amazing pictures I hope to one day share with many people.

Being chief editor for your yearbook is a big deal! Tell us how you got the job, what it entails, and what you love most about it
The start of my yearbook career took place in 8th grade. At that time, I had joined yearbook as an extracurricular activity and thought it would be a fun thing to do. Starting high school I knew I wanted to be part of the yearbook staff but I soon learned that freshman were not able to join so this meant waiting a whole year to be part of something that I loved doing. Even after waiting a year to join again I was still so excited to be a member of the yearbook staff. Once sophomore year was coming to an end, I knew I had to make sure yearbook was on my class schedule for the upcoming year. The beginning of junior year came around and my teacher announced she was looking for the years new editors, editors were the leaders of the class and took charge of the book, this is when I knew I needed to apply for a position. A few days had passed, and my teacher was finally able to announce the new editors and name after name was said then all the sudden, I heard my name. I was so grateful to have gotten an editor position, even though I was only an assistant, I was excited. The year ended and my teacher had told us she was not going to be there my senior year and that struck the question who would be the editor in chief. Upon meeting the new teacher, I was ready to show my leadership skills and show the new teacher I had what it took to be such a major role in the yearbook class. All my hard work paid off and I was made editor in chief of yearbook. I love my job as editor in chief and I couldn’t be happier simply being part of creating memories made into a book so many people enjoy at the end of the school year.

How long have you been teaching children's Bible school and what is a favorite memory?
I taught lessons about Jesus and the bible to a group of 3rd graders at my local church for about half a year. This was an experience like no other because children really make you realize how differently they think and how they see things in life. Being a mentor and guiding them for the time that I did was amazing and each child I taught had and still has a special place in my heart. Covid unfortunately made my time with them shorter than I would have liked but I had the opportunity to have zoom calls with them to see how they were doing and what they had been up to during quarantine as well as hand write each of them a note telling them how I hoped they were staying safe during this time. Being able to teach a large group of 6 and 7 year olds about different lessons the bible can teach us and how much God loves each and every single one of us was something I never thought I would be doing but after experiencing it I am so glad I did.

What made you choose Tarelton State University and why their pre-Vet program?
I chose Tarleton State University because of their pre-vet program. From the time I could have toys I never wanted to play with barbies like other little girls, all I wanted to play with were stuffed animals. The passion of loving animals and wanting to care for them has always been a part of my life so once it became time to choose a career path I knew becoming a Vet was the one for me. I know it is a challenging work field and not many people succeed but I know I have what it takes to do what I love. Tarleton State University is one of many schools that offer a vet pathway but none of the others seemed to catch my attention like Tarleton did. Their campus is small yet comforting and will be a great place for me to take on my first four years of vet school.

Chloe Malone – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by April Malone
Photography by @vjenkinsphotography
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Where to start with Chloe??? She's amazing! I have never seen a child that works and loves so hard. She is a straight A student, teaches Bible study to kids on Sunday and Wednesday, has been a starter and now captain on the varsity basketball team for three going on four years. Chloe participates in the sports med program at school, is a member of Fellow Christian Athletes, student counsel, and was recently crowned Homecoming Queen. She is always looking out for her little sister, her friends, and her teammates. If it means they need a ride to practice, tutoring, or just someone to talk to Chloe is always there. This girl has a true zest for life! I honestly don't know how she does it all but as a mother I couldn't be prouder.

Congratulations on being captain of the V Basketball team! What do you love about basketball, being captain and your team?
I love playing basketball because it is my escape from everything, and I’ve been playing since I was 3 and have never felt how I feel on the court anywhere else. Also being a part of a team gives me a sense of belonging that isn't found anywhere else. My teammates are my best friends on and off the court and being able to play with them every day is amazing.

What is your favorite memory from basketball?
My favorite memory from basketball is probably from my freshman year when my team was playing for a spot in the regional finals and we were down and fought together as a team and ended up winning that game and advancing to the regional finals. There is nothing I love more than being competitive and winning so that game just made me love basketball even more.

Tell us about the sports med program and Fellow Christian Athletes and what you do in each of them.
In the sports medicine program, I am a Student Athletic Trainer which means I help take care of the athletes when they need water, are bleeding or get hurt during the practices or games.
In Fellowship of Christian Athletes, we all meet up together and play team bonding games and have bible studies weekly, and just get together and worship.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Becoming TGCA All State basketball player three years in a row is a super big accomplishment for me. I have been working on my game day in and day out since I was five years old and first discovered how much I loved it. I have given up many of my nights and weekends so that I could practice, it takes a lot. Obviously if it wasn’t for the support of my coaches and family, the hours they put into me, the rides to practice, the financial support, and just them being there for me I am certain it would have been a lot more difficult.
Picture

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say that hard work is an inevitable! When you run into an obstacle don’t give up, step back, reassess and make a more prepared approach to the situation. Just don’t give up!

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Peer pressure hands down. Youth today are so concerned with following the crowd and trying to fit in that sometimes they go too far. I really feel like at the end of the day you need to be able to not only live with your choices but be happy with them. Respect yourself enough to say no.

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to play college basketball, travel all over and go deep sea fishing, and I would like to backpack through Europe.

Congratulations on getting homecoming queen! What is homecoming like at your school? What are your favorite traditions and what do you love to participate in most?
At my school we don't do a homecoming dance, but homecoming is still a big thing. All week we do dress up days which is personally my favorite part of homecoming, then on Friday we have a pep rally for all the sports to get them pumped up for their games, and to get the fans ready to support.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

In five years, I hope to be graduating college with a degree in kinesiology and pursuing a career as a basketball coach and math teacher.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to go fishing and cook out with my friends! I was raised in the country and it is just what we do.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes! I am pretty good cook. Cooking and baking are things my mom and I have always enjoyed doing together and I have developed quite the talent for it.

Picture

Who do you find inspiring?

My coaches for sure. They time and effort that Coach Hilliard and Coach Sykes put into myself and my team is just unreal. They are so dedicated to our success on and off the court, and nothing gets by these two, I mean nothing. They love us like their own, talk to us when we need guidance, and correct us when we are wrong. That type of care, compassion and influence is what every kid needs and deserves in their life. This is exactly why I want to coach when I grow up.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
It’s so hard to say something like this about yourself. If I had to guess though, I would say it’s that I always push the people in my life to achieve their dreams. The younger kids, my teammates, they are all so important to me and I let them know it. I want them to have someone solid to look to when they are struggling or just looking for an example. Essentially, I try to treat everyone like they are someone special because I like to see people smile!

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I keep track of everything in my phone and I schedule everything myself so that there is no confusion or conflicts, because its easy for that to happen. Being prepared for every day is probably the most important part of my routine. The little things like having my clothes laid out and making sure to pack snacks since I am always on the move make all the difference. There are a lot of times I squeeze in homework while I am on the way to games or waiting on my class to arrive at church so that I am not up too late getting that done.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
At the end of the day when all is said and done, it’s my faith in God that drives me.

Tell us about your family and why you wanted to include them in on this interview.
I can never put into words how much I love my Family and thank them enough for making me strong, loving, caring person I am today. In 2007 not only did I lose a little sister, but my Parents lost a daughter and instead of giving up they made their marriage stronger than I could imagine. They not only showed their love for each other but for us and anyone in need of it. They showed me to never give up and keep fighting for what I want and love.

When did your interest begin of taking pictures and what are your favorite things to take pictures of?
A few years ago, when I finally realized how beautiful everyday simple things could be, like sunsets and families just spending time together. I love taking pictures of outside things but most of all when my little brother and sisters play sports.

What is one of your favorite sports memories?
My favorite memory is the past couple of years I’ve been held back from my sport’s due to several injuries but not giving up and being able to come back stronger my senior year.

Nathalie Gutierrez

Nathalie Gutierrez - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath

The nomination: Nathalie Gutierrez, 13 years old is celebrating her 10 years in dance trajectory.
Picture
Photography by Gary Hufham Professional Photography

What do you love most about your passion for dance?
My passion for dance honestly started when I was 10. Even though I loved dancing since I was 3, I never really knew why. When I was 10, I joined junior company at my studio. And ever since the first week of me being in that company it made me realize my passion for dance. Dance is all about expressing your feelings of the character you are playing or even yourself. It has always been hard to express my feelings towards others but with dance it has made me conquer that fear. Through the music and arm movements and with the faces you perform with, the audience and you know how you feel.

How has dancing for 10 years impacted your daily life and routine?
Dancing has always been a part of my life ever since I was a little girl. Before I started dancing at a studio, I’d dance all over the house listening to music. When my mom signed me up to classes when I was 3, I’ve never been so happy to finally take dance classes. My love for dance has only gotten bigger. Even though I wasn’t the best dancer in my classes that didn’t matter to me because of the amount of love I have for it. When I was 10, I decided to join the junior company of my studio. And that’s when I started to learn how to dance more professionally which meant more classes per week. I would come home from school get ready for dance and straight out the door to class. Whenever I got older my routine just got more complicated. I had to find space for homework since each grade level assigned more homework and projects. All I thought about every day, every hour was school and dance. And that is still what I think about today.

Picture
Photography by Gary Hufham Professional Photography

Tell me a little bit about one of your favorite memories or experiences you have made through dance that stands out to you.

My life is full of happy memories, especially from dance. Every year we preform our annual Nutcracker. Every year I got a bigger role. But my biggest role yet was the soldier doll. My favorite memory was seeing my name as that part. I never knew I could get my first solo that year. When I saw my name on my home screen next to “Soldier doll”. I’ve felt more accomplished in my life. I knew I made it. To be honest I never really thought I was a good dancer compared to the other girls in my group. But when I saw my name. I knew I was able to do anything.

What type of dance is your favorite and why?
Every type of dance is different in its own way. And I’ve tried almost every type so far. But favorite has to be jazz. Jazz has always been my favorite ever since my first jazz class when I was 7. Jazz has been my favorite because it has all the ballet technique plus the fun arm movements and music. Jazz is all about having fun through the music. And music is something that is very important to me. Ballet is to strict, tap is all about footwork, modern is all about jumps and abstract. While jazz is all basically every type of dance into one.

Picture
Photography by Rita Harris

In what ways have you balanced school, dance, and other activities you are involved in?

Dance and school take up my whole life to be honest. I wake up early morning and go to school. After school I go home, get ready for dance, and don’t come back from home until 9:40 pm and do my homework and finish projects. It has always been super difficult to balance everything all in one whole week. But I’ve been getting the hang of it ever since I learned how to manage my time. During school hours I’ll try to finish some of my homework and projects, so I don’t have to do as much as I have to do after school. When I get home from school I get dressed quickly and eat something before I go out the door. Since my little sister always has class before me, I always find time to do some homework or study for exams before my classes. And since we always have late night rehearsals, some nights I would try to not do my homework during those days so I can have a break occasionally. When I get back home I would barely have any school work to do so I go shower, eat, and straight to bed, but if I have still have school work to do , I do it right before go to bed.

Kaya Williams – Texas

Nomination by Kwani Williams
Photography by Giantpixel Photography
Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kaya Williams started her influencer career as all-star cheerleader and suffered an injury that set her back with her tumbling and while she is taking a break from the all star cheer world she is still working on her tumbling and discovering other sports and supporting her all-star cheer friends.
Picture
Photography by Giantpixel Photography

When did you start cheering at your gym in Virginia and what inspired you do want to start cheerleading?
I started cheering in 2014. My mom had a friend who’s daughter was cheering and she took me there to sign up for tumbling and I watch the team practice and wanted to try it

What was the transition like from cheering at a small gym to switching to a big gym? What are the differences between the two?
The transition was scary because I knew everyone at my smaller gym even the girls not on the same team as me so I was worried that I wouldn’t fit in with my team since I had tried out via video from Virginia. I think the main difference is that you have fewer athletes and coaches so it more of second family.

Picture
Photography by Giantpixel Photography

Tell me about All Star cheer and how it is different from regular cheer! What competitions have you gone to and what were they like?
I have never done any other kind of cheer, the main difference is all star is competition cheer you are not cheering for any sports at all. You are the sport and others are there to watch and cheer you on. We do several competitions around Texas but the two big ones are the NCA in Dallas Texas and The Summit at Disney’s ESPN Sports Complex. These two competitions are very large, and teams come from all across the United States and the World to compete and the atmosphere is electric

Picture

How were you injured and what are you doing to make the best of it?
I had an overuse injury to my Right knee in 2018. I was unable to train and compete for 5 months but I was at practice and every competition supporting my teammates. Once the Doctor released me I was able to finish the competition season off but without any of my tumbling skills.

Picture

Because you were injured what other sports are you discovering and what are you finding to love about them? Will you continue playing them after your injury heals?
I am going to try Track and field. I found running because it was part of my physical therapy and I enjoyed it, so hopefully this year I will be able to try out for my school team while still working on getting my tumbling back.

What do you enjoy most about being involved in so many different sports and what achievements have you received from them?
As a junior in high school, the thing I enjoy most about being involved in various sports like basketball, track, and cheer is the ability to socialize with different people. Not every sport holds the same participants, so it is a great way of meeting new people and creating friends from my own school and other schools. Also, I enjoy the spirit of healthy competition in sports. The competitive nature of team and individual sports pushes me to perform my absolute best even when I feel at times that I have nothing more to give. Last year, I played basketball for the first time. There was a definite learning curve in understanding the plays and the game itself. I was blessed to have an exceptional coach who wanted us to understand offense and defense and not just run plays. So, in my first year ever of playing basketball, we placed 3rd in the State Championship. It was an amazing experience! I also made it to the State Track meet in 9th grade with our relay team and it showed me what could be accomplished with hard work and faith. In cheer, I have been in a leadership role for the past 3 years. This past year, I was nominated as Student Athlete of the Year in Cheerleading in our region.
Picture
Photography by Sande Bilton Photography
Tell me a little bit about the different extracurricular activities and clubs you are a part of at your school including being Secretary of the Christian Honor Society.
This is my 3rd year in the Christian Honor Student Association and I am very excited about the upcoming year. First, I am holding an officer position in the organization. Being in leadership will allow me to have a voice in the future direction of our club. Secondly, we have significantly increased the number of service projects we are doing in the community this year and this will help me and my peers become better servant leaders.

I also hold another leadership role as Captain of the Cheer team. This is my 4th year as a cheerleader and 3rd year in leadership. I’ve developed much stronger leadership skills because I must ensure each team member knows how important they are to the team. We don’t always agree but I try to make sure everyone knows they have a voice and their thoughts will be heard. This year I have been significantly more involved in the “business and economics” side of cheer. For example, I sought out multiple vendors and led all communication with them, compared pricing and payment terms, negotiated discounts, designed our uniforms and the customization on our gear, worked out the numbers on the total expense for cheer and helped set up a payment plan for parents to pay out the expense over several months. My mom, who is a business consultant and our Team Mom for the squad, taught me a lot of questions to ask and business things to consider but she always left the final decision to me on which direction to go.

I am also on a recreational competition cheer team and it is helping me exponentially grow my cheer skills and talents. Each week, I have two days of 3 hour practices for our recreational team. For my school cheer team, we have 3-6 hours of practice each week and several of our practices begin at
6 AM. In addition, I am taking 2 dual credit classes for college so I can start getting more college hours under my belt before high school graduation. My academic accomplishments are extremely important to me. In my freshman year, I had the highest GPA in our class and in my sophomore year, I had the second highest GPA. It definitely takes time management skills with all the activities in which I am involved and the study time I need to put in each week.

How has your faith impacted your life and who you are?
Proverbs 31:30 says “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” It is through God that I have been able to accomplish the things I have in the past 15 years. My dad is a pastor and my mom is a minister so before I was even born, faith was already a very important part of my life. My dad has always stressed the importance of living a saved life. As a teenager, living for Jesus and having fun does not have to be mutually exclusive.

I’ve seen God perform miracles with my dad’s health. He had a massive stroke when I was a baby and he probably should have died, but I saw God heal him. Ten years later he had emergency open heart surgery, and again, he probably should have died, but God healed him. So yes, “bad things do happen to good people” but my faith keeps me believing that God will make a way… even when it seems impossible.

In my 9th grade year of track, I kept believing that our 800m relay team would make it to State. I would not let myself believe otherwise. We were not the fastest team in the District, but we made it to Regionals. We were not the fastest team in the Region, but we made it to State. I just kept believing that if we did our part, God would make a way.

Tell me more about how you strive to be a role model for girls of diversity by uplifting others and making sure they all know their worth.
Growing up, I did not see a lot of women in power or in high positions who looked like me. With that missing, it was very hard to find role models in positions of power. I wanted to make sure other girls, especially Black and Brown girls, had someone they could look up to who would be a positive influence in their lives. I don’t think people really realize how hard it is when Black and Brown girls don’t see images of what they want to become when they grow up. You wouldn’t believe how excited and happy I was when I saw The Princess and the Frog when I was 4 years old. Finally, there was a Princess who looked like me! There was Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, and others but now I finally had a Princess I could call my own.

I want little girls to see me and know they can love God, be smart, be an athlete, respect themselves and each other, and remember they are valuable and beautiful. Finally, I want all girls to know they should uplift each other and not tear each other down. As girls and young women, we have the power to completely destroy one another or lift up and encourage each other. I chose to lift up girls and young women.

In what ways has your love for sports influenced what you want to do with your life and what career you want to pursue?

My love of sports has inspired me to look beyond the present and include them in my future. I would like to attend college and study to form a career as a sports medicine physician. I know first hand how tough sports can be on the bodies of athletes and I want to help keep them as healthy as possible so they can pursue what they enjoy for as long as possible. While studying, I would also like to become a cheerleader at the college I am attending. Collegiate cheer is the next level for me and would allow me to reach new heights and skills in a sport that I truly love.

How can you inspire other teens to know the importance of feeling confident in who they are and embracing the comfort of their skin they were blessed with?
No love matters until you first have self-love. Self-love must be taught. It is not automatic. It is not a given. Had it not been for my parents, I would not know how to love myself, be confident in who I am, and embrace the skin I was blessed to be born in. We live in a time when girls and young see standards of “beauty” that other people impose on them. We are inundated daily with images on social media of what “beauty” should look like and it is easy to become depressed or down because you don’t look like the images you see.

But we are all put here for a purpose. Girls should be taught at a young age that beauty begins within. Next they should know they are beautiful when they look in the mirror. We are all uniquely created by God and when girls are taught that concept at a young age, peer pressure and unrealistic images won’t be so harmful to them. This year, when my mom and I were having a conversation about self-confidence, I told her in elementary school, I hated how my knees looked. Then one year I had an accident in the kitchen, cut my knee pretty badly, and ended up with a very noticeable scar. This caused me not to want to wear shorts where my knees could be seen. Even in a house where I was always taught to embrace my skin and have self-confidence, I still had insecurities. Imagine how hard it is for girls who never taught to love themselves, value themselves, appreciate themselves.

I told my mom that I not only wanted to use my voice but I wanted to build a business that would be created to help girls and young women know that they are wonderfully and fearfully made. My business, which I will be launching before the holidays, will be merchandise with positive messages of affirmations to remind the wearers of their unique qualities.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would let others know that regardless of what is going on, you must persevere and keep pushing forward. It’s better to make small baby steps towards your goals versus giving up completely. Trust in God, put in the work, and things will work out.

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom is one of the most inspiring people I know. She does so many things and I don’t know how she manages it all. She works full-time in medical sales, has her own business, does work in the community, is the Team Mom for cheer, and always makes the time for me and my dad. My mom believes in supporting women and being a positive role model in the community. So many people look up to her and I always see her operate in grace and love. I’m proud she is my mom!
