Shannon Prendergast - Pennsylvania Nomination by Colleen Prendergast Photography by NRG Imaging Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
Nomination: Shannon was born to lead. When her family's haunted house nonprofit needed a volunteer director, she stepped right up and helped. Now in 2021, when Shannon found out her school wasn't having a prom, she went and booked one herself. Then hearing that many students couldn't go because of been hit financially from the pandemic, Shannon decided to raise money for the ticket cost. Out of the 107 guests, more than half are going because of donations! The This Is Our Night prom is open to seniors from last year and to any student denied a prom this year. She's just amazing and we are so proud of her.

Tell us about the prom you are hosting for your fellow students. When my school decided not to do a prom, I decided that I didn't want to miss out on such an important high school memory. I booked a hall and started selling tickets for seniors from last year and those whose schools cancelled their proms. Then I found out that so many students couldn't afford to go. I started a fundraiser to sponsor a student's prom ticket. Now more than half of those going were donated by the community! The 'This Is Our Night Prom' is June 17 and I'm really excited. I hope everyone that goes has a magical time.
Did you ask for help? Where did you find help and what was it like taking on such a great leadership position? I relied on my Mom A LOT and a few of my friends. I sent out press releases to local news organizations to help me get the word out. Then I reached out to local businesses to help me get things like photos and decorations paid for. We lost so much due to the pandemic. I just needed a way to make this happen for local seniors.
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover? I've always been big into art and I love being around kids. I hope to go to college to do art therapy and teaching for children and those with disabilities.
What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about? Get involved with your community! Do community service! It really makes you feel better about yourself and doing something for others is really important. Not many people take the time to do things for others and it's just too important. Not only do I volunteer with my families nonprofit, but I donate my time to helping another non-profit give out gifts to the elderly.

Tell us about your family's nonprofit. My family runs a nonprofit called Croydon Haunted Hollows. Over 50 volunteers dress up and put on a scary Halloween show every year for free for our community. We are also the first in our area to do a Sensory Friendly Haunted House for families with autistic children. I am the volunteer director for all the school age volunteers and I love it.
What other community service projects do you do? I volunteer at a local nonprofit called The Christmas Gala and they deliver gifts and necessities to the elderly all year long. I've helped deliver gifts and even designed some Christmas Cards to be mailed to senior citizens. I also have done video editing work for another local nonprofit called the 3C of Connecting Foundation. They support local businesses and run events that help raise money for other nonprofits. They have a lot of networking events and I love going. Networking is definitely a skill that everyone should know.
3 things on your bucket list Travel to Italy or Ireland. Graduate College. Be a motivational speaker
Who do you find inspiring? My mom! Her intuition and all-knowing 'mom-ness'. Her ability to rationalize and work through any situation. Her generosity and selflessness. Her empathy for others. Her silly sense of humor. I wouldn't be the person I am without her guidance. I love you Mom!
