Nomination: Kavya Gangasani is the founder and executive director of Bay Area Medical Explorers, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth to pursue careers in medicine. Kavya has led initiatives including community blood drives, research bootcamps, and global health case study programs, enabling students to engage with real-world challenges. What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?
Beyond my achievements, what defines me most is my ability to lead with purpose. Through founding Bay Area Medical Explorers, I have learned the importance of taking initiative even when there is no clear path forward. Some key qualities that have shaped my journey with Bay Area Medical Explorers are empathy, strategic thinking, and consistency. These qualities have helped me build strong teams, form meaningful partnerships, and scale our impact effectively. As a result, Bay Area Medical Explorers has grown to over 350 active members, 20+ chapters worldwide, and a collective reach of more than 400,000 individuals to date.
What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
My most current project is my nonprofit, Bay Area Medical Explorers, a student-led nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth to pursue careers in healthcare. The organization offers structured mentorship, research opportunities, global health case study programs, and more. I am focused on growing our chapters, strengthening our programs, and creating structured initiatives that give students real-world experience. In the long term, I plan to pursue a career in medicine while continuing to create opportunities for others. Ultimately, I hope to create something bigger than myself and open a hospital one day.
What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I am deeply passionate about the power that young students have to be change-makers. I believe that youth today have the ability to create meaningful impact simply by taking action. One of the most powerful tools that they can utilize is digital platforms, which allow ideas to reach thousands of people instantly. Through these platforms, students can build communities, share knowledge, and take action on issues they care about. This matters to me because I have seen how an idea can grow into something much bigger and inspire others to create positive change as well.
What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
Throughout my journey with Bay Area Medical Explorers, I have learned that leadership is not about having all the answers, but about adapting to unforeseen circumstances and growing from my mistakes. At first, I believed that perfection was required for action, but I've realized that real progress comes from starting and learning along the way. I have also developed resilience, an essential leadership skill, especially when facing difficult challenges. Most importantly, I believe strong leadership is about responsibility and staying committed to a purpose bigger than yourself.
What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful things about my mother is her constant support in everything I do. From starting Bay Area Medical Explorers to pursuing new opportunities, she has always believed in me. A favorite memory that means a lot to me is sharing my goals and aspirations with her and seeing her encourage me to take the first step. Her everlasting belief in me has given me the confidence to take risks, grow, and keep moving forward. My mother's love and support have truly made a difference in my journey.
Tell us about the photographer or person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
My mother took my photo for Inspiring Teens Magazine, which made the experience especially meaningful. She made me feel comfortable and confident, and it felt natural being able to share that moment with her. The experience was not just about taking pictures, but also capturing an important part of my journey with someone who has consistently supported me.
How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine through opportunities that highlight youth entrepreneurship and impact. The magazine's mission stood out to me because it focused on sharing real stories of students making a difference in their communities. The opportunity to be a part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matters to me because it is not only recognition, but also a national platform to inspire others. I hope that my journey can encourage students to take initiative and believe in their potential. I am also excited to connect with a community of driven youth leaders.

If I were to receive a scholarship from Inspiring Teens Magazine, I would use it to further expand Bay Area Medical Explorers and increase access to our programs. The funding would support research initiatives, service projects, and educational opportunities, allowing us to reach more youth and create positive experiences for them. It would also help grow our chapters and strengthen our impact worldwide. Overall, the support would enable me to continue creating accessible pathways for young students interested in the medical field and scale the organization.
