Tell us about your track and field career.
It all started when I was in Junior High. I realized that I was really good at it and went for it. I am a 4 time regional qualifier. My events will be Long Jump, 100m dash, and 400m relay.

What is a favorite accomplishment with track?
My favorite accomplishment is that I was able to qualify to regionals 4 times with sprint relay. Recently just qualified for individuals for long jump and 100m dash.

What is a favorite memory with your track team?
Our 400m relay made it to the finals for regionals and placed 8th overall. The best feeling in the world!

When did you start cheerleading and what is your favorite thing about the sport?
I started cheering at the age of 7. I love to cheer during football games under the Friday night lights and the pep rallies just made it so much fun!

What do you wish non cheerleaders knew about cheerleading/cheerleaders?
I wish them to always do their best! Never be shy, always spirit! Most of all, always point your toes and smile!

What is a proud moment with your cheer team?
My favorite moment is when I received that blue ribbon for seniors only at NCA summer cheer camp. It was such a bittersweet moment for me.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class would be Economics. The most interesting thing I have learned is how money works in finances.

What has been a rewarding experience with the NHS?
Most rewarding would be helping out at school functions and interacting with fans.

What service project did you enjoy the most within the NHS?
I enjoyed going to a suicide awareness class. A lot of information was given out to understand how others are feeling and ways to prevent it.

What is your strongest leadership quality, and example of when you've gotten to use it?
The strongest leadership quality would be is giving positive words, and I have used that to my relay track team to help us push through our events.

What are you most looking forward to at Texas A&M-Kingsville?
I am looking forward to meeting new people, taking college courses. Also starting with new stunt team at TAMUK.

Why did you choose Kinesiology-Excercise Science and what do you hope to do as a career?
I chose Exercise Science, because I want to help those who are injured and make them recover from their injuries.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My inspiration is seeing those little girls who watch me cheer during the Friday night lights. They want to be just like us. It makes my heart happy to see them cheer on the stands. They shout out my name and they wave at me. I always wave back at them. I enjoyed every moment of my entire high school cheer days.

What else would you like to talk about?
I love how photos are just memories we take and treasure of every moment of our lives especially during our high school days.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My passion is track and field! I could talk about that forever! I love to see girls compete in long jump and sprinting. I admire those who work so hard and leave it all on that track and field.

How did you find your photographer, Studio 361 Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My friend’s mom is a photographer for Studio 361 Photography. The experience is so amazing she captures all poses that I can imagine. I love all her work. Every photo she’s taken has been outstanding and I have no words to describe, pure perfection!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me at the beach with my family and friends.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am ready to start my new journey in college and doing a new sport with TAMUK Javelina Stunt Team next season.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished was doing long jump. It took me a couple years to PR my jumps and it has helped me to this day to improve and keep moving on to the next level.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To never give up! Always strive in what you believe in.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

Hailey Welsh – California
Nomination by Dana Welsh
Photography by Molly Bolinger
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Hailey Welsh is inspiring because she stands up for what she believes in, for herself and for others. She doesn't let a bad day keep her down for long before she's right back at it. She doesn't let fear get in the way of trying new experiences and going for what she wants out of life even when it pushes her out of her comfort zone. She's kind, compassionate, and always willing to help her friends and family.
Photography by Molly Bolinger

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My immediate family consists of 5 people; my mom, my dad, my brother, my sister, and myself. I fit in in the way that my dad and I seem to have the same sense of humor. This tends to annoy the other members of my family but we have a really good time. I stand out in the way that I am the only member of my immediate family to try out for a collegiate sport. I have been cheering competitively and on the sideline since I was 5 years old and intend to continue my cheer career into college by trying out for the Sacramento State cheer team

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
My two closest friends I have both known since middle school. I met my friend, Riley in seventh grade and have stayed extremely close to her since. We love to tan together, get food together, shop together, and much more. I met my friend. Rose in sixth grade and have also stayed extremely close to her since. We love to study together, get coffee together, shop together, and much more. I hope to stay friends with them long past high school.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My level of commitment is inspiring. I have been cheering for 13 years and counting and I stay very committed to this sport even now. During off-season I sharpen my skills by going to open gyms to practice. When I'm not doing that, I am in the gym weight-lifting and doing cardio to maintain my fitness levels.

What do you love most about cheer?
I am deeply into the competition aspect of cheer. There is no feeling quite like stepping on the cheer mat before a performance. I love the adrenaline rush that it brings me and getting to perform with my teammates and show off our hard work is an amazing feeling

What about cheer do you think most people don't realize?
I think most people don't realize it's about a lot more than just cheering for other sports.
Competitive cheerleading also exists and is a sport in and of itself.

My team and I won a few titles as a youth cheerleader that I am very proud of. We won a few national titles, as well as a state title, and a grand champion title. Grand champion goes to the highest scoring routine at a competition across all divisions and levels. Going on to high school, I made it to second day at nationals with my team after beating out 28 other teams and earning first place. On second day we placed second and this is something my team and I were extremely proud of.

How did you find your photographer, Molly Bolinger? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found her through FaceBook. My experience with her has been amazing. I love how my photographer just gets me and how comfortable she has made the whole experience. Photoshoots with her are always lively and heed great results.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have a love for fashion. I incorporate this into my daily life with my outfit choices. I have a creative vision when it comes to how I dress myself as well as how I decorate my spaces. I hope to make this into a career one day so I can inspire others to get more creative with their choices in dressing and decorating.

How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as extremely girly and feminine. I love the color pink and am often dressed in feminine clothing.

Where are your favorite places to shop and why?
When I go to the mall you will most likely find me in Garage. This is my favorite store because I feel that it keeps up with trends very well and aligns with my girly sense of style.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I love to talk about how I have grown as an individual and what led me to get where I am today. I have done a lot of self work and self reflection over the course of a year, and I feel I have learned a lot about myself and I definitely have a lot of wise words to share. My biggest piece of advice is that you must focus on what you can control instead of what you can't. You can choose the life you want to live.

Carley Carruthers

4/11/2024

Picture

Carley Carruthers – Texas
Nomination by Tracey Carruthers
Photography by Kenda Davies Photography
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Carley inspires because of the type of person that she is. She is sweet, humble, and kind to everyone. A Senior in high school, Carley has been a classroom aide for two years, helping students with intellectual disabilities. She helps them with daily assignments and projects. She refers to the students as "her kids" and she treats them with such love and compassion. The relationship she has with them is precious. Recently, Carley started her own Lashing Business, Gorgeous Girl Lashes. She has been extremely successful and has built a faithful following. She loves helping girls feel beautiful and confident.

What does helping students with intellectual disabilities entail on your end?
Being a classroom aide, I help my students with a wide range of activities. We work on classroom assignments together, and I get to work with them on an individual basis. At times, when we are caught up with assignments, we get to socialize and just be high school kids, taking selfies together and talking about life. I also help them prepare for dances and Prom. I help do the girls’ hair, makeup, and nails. I love helping them feel beautiful and special. At the same time, I love that I get to help them have typical high school experiences.

What have you learned about yourself from this experience?
To be a classroom aide for students with intellectual disabilities, you must be nominated by a teacher. One of my teachers observed my interactions with some of the students and asked that I sign up to be an aide. At first, I wasn’t sure what I would do but thought it sounded like fun. Through this experience, I have realized that I love working with people who face challenges different than my own. I am so inspired by “my kids” and their sweet and kind spirits. Getting to help them in ANY way has been such a blessing to me.

What do you wish others knew about people with intellectual disabilities?
I wish that other people realized how precious people with intellectual disabilities truly are. I think sometimes people may avoid these students or not get to know them simply because they are not sure about how to interact with them. Of course they are individuals with unique personalities, but as a collective they are such a kind group of people. I think because they do not get caught up in the drama and materialistic things that can accompany high school, they are just a sweet and loving group. They have an innocence and kindness about them that is genuinely precious.

What do you love best about being a senior this year?
I love being a senior because I am ready to move on to the next chapter of my life. I have loved my high school years, but I am so ready to start college and start preparing for my career. I have so many things that I want to accomplish, and I am eager to get started. I am so excited to see what amazing opportunities the future holds for me!

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I hope that my legacy will ultimately be that I leave the people that I meet better off than they were when I met them. I want to be a role model to those around me, and to inspire others to chase their dreams. I was a competitive cheerleader for years, and every year I won the “Positivity” Award for my gym. That is how I always want to be known. I want to show kindness to the people that I interact with and use my business as a platform to spread positivity and help others believe in themselves.

How did you find your senior photographer, Kenda Davies Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer, Kenda Davies, through friends who had experience with her. She is one of the most popular photographers who take Senior pictures in my area. I am part of her Four Seasons team, so I have four sessions with her, throughout the year. Every photoshoot with Kenda has been an absolute blast! She is a phenomenal photographer and such a fun person. What I have loved most about my experience is the uniqueness of my sessions. I love that she is energetic, creative, and genuinely cares about providing quality work, documenting the memories of my Senior year.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am proud to say that I started my own business shortly after my eighteenth birthday. I decided to take a training course to allow me to become a lash tech. As a lash tech, I do lash extensions, lash tints and lifts, and brow laminations. I started out with a couple of friends as clients and have steadily grown my clientele over the past six months. I have now expanded my services to include full glam packages for Prom and wedding seasons. I absolutely LOVE that my job allows me to help girls feel beautiful, confident and fierce!

Tell us about your Lashing Business and the steps you took to start it.
After taking a lashing certification course, I decided that I wanted to start my own business. After establishing my location, I had to decide how to get my name out there and build clientele. When I first started my business, I had another job. At first, I was hesitant to quit my job, but I soon realized that I would not be able to do both. As my client volume grew, I had to decide to either play it safe or take a leap of faith and rely on my business. Without a doubt, I made the right decision!

What was the hardest thing about getting it going?
The hardest thing about getting my business going was the initial set up. I chose my location, remodeled, and then decided on equipment and supplies. Choosing supplies was challenging until I found the highest quality products that yielded the best results for my clients. Today, my biggest hurdle continues to be having the availability for all my appointment requests. I love my job and I love my clients, so it is really hard to turn down an appointment. I want to take care of each of my girls, and sometimes the challenge is just having a limited amount of time.

What has been the best part of owning your own business?
The best part of owning my own business is having the flexibility and freedom to work whenever I want to. It is such a blessing to be able to work as much or as little as I want, and to make my own schedule. I love that I get to do what I love to do, which is make girls feel confident and beautiful. My business has also given me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people, which I absolutely love. It is so easy to be enthusiastic about work when you LOVE what you do!

What has been the most unexpected thing to come of it?
I have been pleasantly surprised by how fast my business has grown and how busy I am. I have a solid foundation of regular clients and they send me new client referrals frequently. I expected to be successful, but I am honestly amazed at how fast my success came. At times it is challenging to juggle school and a full work schedule, but I am so grateful to have that challenge. Also, I did not realize that I would meet so many new people that would become friends so easily. I am extremely humbled by the growth of my business!

What else would you like to talk about?
After graduation, I plan to study nursing at Texas Tech University. I want to become a nurse practitioner and work in the aesthetics field. Eventually, I want to own and manage my own Medical and Aesthetics spa. Since I was a little girl, I have always loved makeup. I enjoy trying different cosmetic items and brands, learning makeup application techniques, and teaching others how to get the best out of their cosmetics. I view aesthetics as a form of art and it is so gratifying to see the finished masterpiece and watch as others react and respond to your work.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am extremely passionate about helping others feel good about themselves and develop confidence. This is one of the reasons I enjoy being a student aid, working with students with intellectual disabilities. I love helping “my kids” feel good about themselves and feel seen as the amazing individuals that they are. They are so genuinely kind and loving and they bring so much joy to my school days. Whether I am helping them with schoolwork or painting their fingernails and styling their hair for prom, the time that I get to spend with them is extremely special to me.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would probably find me shopping! I love shopping for clothes, shoes, and makeup, of course!

Kilea Lermann

4/11/2024

Picture

Kilea Lermann – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kilea Lermann is a beautiful young woman who puts the world on her shoulders to accomplish her goals while enjoying the life of a teenager. From her 40 mile drive to school, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, her role as a varsity cheer captain, managing three jobs as a yoga instructor, waitress, and cheer coach, and time with her friends; she meets the needs of her responsibilities with a smile. I am in awe that a young adult can handle these challenges effectively and successfully, but Kilea does. She inspires others and is a great inspiration for all!

Tell us about your drive to school.
Even though my drive to school is very long, it gives me time to get ready for the rest of the day and calm my mind with music! Music is my favorite way to clear my head and I'm usually listening to Zach Bryan, Alanis Morissette, or Kanye West! By the time I get to school I’m in a good mood and ready for my day!

Why is maintaining a 4.0 important to you?
Maintaining a 4.0 GPA is important to me, because of the way I look up to my father. My dad is the smartest person I know and Is always the smartest person in any room he enters. I've always wanted to have a brain like my dad which is why my grades and academics are so important to me!

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite and the most interesting class I took this year is Christian Woman. In this class we learned about womanhood and the strength every woman truly holds. We had fundraisers and visited certain programs to help women through tough times. This class taught me the importance of being true to myself and how strong I truly am.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started my cheer career when I was 10 years old! From participating in school and competitive cheer, it has always been my second home. My journey has had many ups and downs, but I reached my childhood dream of making it to Worlds, the biggest competition a cheerleader can attend! This was my favorite memory as a cheerleader and the event that has put my cheer career on pause for now. Cheerleading will always have a special place in my heart but for now I am closing a chapter that could always be reopened in the future!

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
My favorite memory would definitely be the feeling my whole team felt when we went to the 2022-2023 Worlds Competition! Everyone was so nervous and excited at the same time, and we all bonded on the fact that we were all living out our dream. Competing at this competition was the best experience and something I will never forget!

How did you get certified as a yoga instructor and how would you describe your yoga teaching style?
I followed my mom’s path with being an instructor and my teaching style. My mother is a fitness company entrepreneur and started with teaching fitness classes of all types. I would always admire how motivational my mom’s teaching style is, and now I try to follow her footsteps and be just like her!

What have you learned about the public in general as a waitress?
What I have learned about the community I work in is that with kindness, relationships are created. I have met very important people in my life at this job and have regulars that I have created close bonds with. With acts of kindness to people I don't know, great things are rewarded!

What have you learned about yourself working as a cheer coach?
Being a cheer coach, I have learned that I have more patience than I might have thought. Having patience in this position is so important, because everyone responds to things differently. I've had to learn how to be patient in certain situations and do what's best for them. It made me realize that when doing what's best for girls that are in the same position that I was in, patience is an easy thing to come by.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
I would say my strongest leadership quality is motivation. When leading a team I focus on motivating girls to do what they don't think they can do. I think it's important to push them to a limit that they don't think they can reach and remind them what they really are capable of. For me when coaches push me and motivate me, it's always made me a better athlete. Which is why I like to relay that to the athletes I lead.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
When me and my friends get together our favorite things to do are go on walks, go out to brunch, and watch the bachelor!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One thing my nomination does not cover is the reason why I want to see myself as an inspiring teen. I have two sisters, ages fourteen and eight years old. Being the oldest sister has always been my reason to lead by example and inspire ones who are younger than I am. Every day when I make a decision, I think about what I am representing in my sister's point of view. I want these girls to become the strongest, most incredible women I know they can be, and I take on every day showing them that anything is possible.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to send a message to young girls like me highlighting that failure happens, however it's what you do next that is most important. Everyone will be knocked down, but how you stand up shows bravery, strength, and perseverance. There have been many times where I have felt that I want to give up or I can't handle everything going on around me, but if I ever truly let into those thoughts then I wouldn't be the strong young woman I am today.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
One thing I have been passionate about since I was a little girl is cheerleading. Being a cheerleader for over 10 years now, has taught me important lessons and has shaped me into the young woman I am today. When creating a second home with your teammates and coaches, it teaches you the importance of responsibility, hardship, and teamwork. I am passionate about the lessons cheerleading teaches young girls and boys, and the bonds made within. To me cheerleading is not just a sport but a home, and something that will always have a place in my heart!

How did you find your photographer, Angie Read Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer from a former cheer captain who I looked up to as a leader and close friend. This girl was a part of the amazing power team that Angie Read has created, and I admired the experience she shared. I instantly knew I wanted to be a part of something so inspiring, and joining the power team a few years later has been such an amazing experience. More specifically, the moment I love most from this experience is meeting girls who not only inspire me but inspire girls around them every day!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing on my agenda, then you would definitely find me at the nearest beach! The beach is my favorite place to relax and have a good day!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Up next for me is becoming an Aggie! I plan to go to A&M for college and make my way to law school from there! I am so excited to start a new chapter of my life and see what life has in store for me!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Making important decisions have been some of the hardest things I have had to do because they would change my life forever. However, with trust that everything happens for a reason, and listening to my heart, accomplishing these things have come out with good results!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
There is a reason for everything, so instead of looking at the bad turn it into something that can be great!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Working to get my law degree, and traveling as much as I can!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Reading! I love to read and can finish a whole chapter book in less than 24 hours!

Do you have a hidden talent?
What is it? I can remember all the words to any song, after only listening to it once or twice!

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to greece, Surf around the world, own a horse

Who do you find inspiring?
My parents! These are two people I have always inspired to be like and have represented nothing but bravery, perseverance, and love.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I would say the reason I am inspiring is because I truly never give up. Instead of competing with others, I compete with myself to make me the best person I can be in my eyes.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
To be yourself, because no one else can!

Lisa Lewis

Lisa Lewis – Pennsylvania
Nomination & Photography by Tish OConnor Photography.
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine.

Nomination: Lisa Lewis is an inspiring teen. Lisa started gymnastics when she was 11 years old and with perseverance, resilience and determination she made it to not only a level 10 gymnast, but was recruited as a D1 athlete for the upcoming Fall Semester. She also performs well in school, and is in the top 5% of her class. She has a heart of gold, leads by example, stands up for what is right, is compassionate and cares about people. She shines enthusiasm in not just her day but in everyone’s day.
Photography by Tish OConnor Photography

Tell us about your gymnastics career. Why did you get started and where are you at with it now?

I had dreamt of doing gymnastics since the third grade after going to a birthday party. Unfortunately, my father was in the hospital four hours from home, and we could not afford gymnastics at the time, so I took dance lessons instead. I liked dance but all I wanted to do was gymnastics, so I tried to teach myself how to do flips in my yard. In August 2017, Bearfoot Gymnastics opened five minutes from my home. With my determination from both training at home and now in a gym, I was able to be a three-time state champion my first year of gymnastics.

What is a typical day for you to practice like to be level 10?
My normal day starts with me getting up around 6:30am for school. I take four classes at school and leave around 11:15am. I go home, make myself lunch, and do my high school homework. I then work on my college classes that I take at a local college. I then like to pick up a snack at a family-owned restaurant by the gym before heading to practice for four hours. Once I get home, I am able to eat dinner, take a shower, and relax a little before I take on the next day,

What has the hardest thing about the sport been for you, and how did you get through it?
Gymnastics is a mentally challenging sport alongside of being difficult physically. I have had many setbacks with injuries. I have been injured three seasons in a row now. Coming back from an injury takes a lot of grit as you must retrain your body to do moves that were once easy for you. It can get frustrating as you watch your goals get farther away.

What do you wish others knew about gymnasts/gymnastics?
People don't realize the number of hours that gymnasts train all year. There is never a down time. In fact when we aren't competing, we are training even more hours. As I stated before, gymnastics is just as mentally challenging as it is physically.

What did it mean to you to be recruited as a D1 athlete?
Being recruited D1 has meant so much for me. Coming back from all these injuries and set backs and getting the text that you are officially part of a team is a dream come true. I had all these doubts that no coach would want a gymnast who "started late" and had injuries. The Duquesne Coach Super saw something in me, and believed I would be an asset to her team. It felt like everything had come together and all the hard work was paying off for me.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Through my years of gymnastics I have learned mental toughness, strength, and a strong work ethic. Gymnastics teaches you to strive for a difficult target and consistently apply yourself until you reach that skill. Furthermore, by practicing 20 plus hours each week and attending public school, I've needed a consistent routine to be able to stay diligent in keeping up with my education. This strong work ethic has allowed me to take college classes while still in high school.

What has your favorite class been so far this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class that I have taken this year has been engineering with Mrs. Manetta. In this class, my teacher makes sure we have skills mastered so I will be able to use them in my school career and my daily life. I also like how we are give a variety of skills to choose to work on. It helps create a good learning environment as it is something I am interested in learning.

What else would you like to talk about?
Although gymnastics is a large part of my life and largely defines me, I also enjoying being with my family and friends. They help me remember the important things in life such as; laughing, sharing in moments, loving unconditionally, and respecting each other. Everyone needs a strong support system behind them and I value being that to my family and friends as much as they are that to me.

Tell us about your family.
I live with my parents and have an older brother. I am close to them as well as my gram. I enjoy all of our Italian holiday traditions, time together, and vacations.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
My favorite family memory is when we went to go get our dog Mollie. My mom knew we were getting her that day, but told me not to get my hopes up. When we saw her, all our hearts melted. She has been the perfect addition to our family.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about coaching gymnastics now and in the future. Gymnasts go through so much as they strive to be the perfect 10. I want to help remind gymnasts how fun the sport of gymnastics can be and that striving for perfection should never outweigh your progress. As my years of gymnastics are soon coming to a conclusion, I want them to be able to live in the moment and enjoy each time they come to practice and also compete. It all goes by so fast.

How did you find your photographer, Tish OConnor Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Tish O'Connor Photography is a local photographer that takes many senior photos in our area. I was very excited to not only have one session with her but two different ones. She takes her time at each session and makes sure you are enjoying yourself the entire time. She comes up with incredible poses, but at the same time, lets you create any pose you want as well. Tish truly gets to know each person she photographs as an individual and captures their personality in each photo.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day, the first place I would want to be is at the beach. But since there is no beach near us, then I guess you would find me shopping.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Something coming up that I am excited for is to be coaching this summer. Coaching is something I am extremely passionate about and cannot wait to carry my gymnastics knowledge into coaching. I hope to inspire the up-and-coming girls in gymnastics.

Tristan Habetz

Picture

Tristan Habetz - Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by TNT Designs by Tresa Timpa
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Tristan’s ‘never-give-up attitude’ is inspiring. As a student with learning disabilities, he has struggled throughout the years as schoolwork is challenging for him. He has ADHD and a speech impediment making him a target of bullies. However, Tristan is a kind and compassionate young man who genuinely cares about others. When someone is going through a tough time, he’s on the phone telling them he’s praying for them, and he loves them. He has a heart of gold and will keep you laughing with his silly comments. Oh, and Tristan is going to open the door for everyone!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I like to talk to people. If someone needs a friend, I will always go talk to them and try to make friends with them. I try to help the teachers by doing things like cleaning up the shop and shredding papers. I just really like to help people when I can.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have never really liked going to school because the work was very hard for me. It is hard to stay focused and learn what I need to know for the tests. Often I would say I hate school. But I am glad that I am graduating this May. I am proud I was able to push through the schoolwork and finish.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I love to talk about old trucks. I love deer and duck hunting and I love to fish. I could go on and on about farming. I know a lot of stuff about John Deere tractors. I like hanging out with my friend who drives 18-wheelers because I love semi-trucks. I like to go to church and do things with the youth group.

How did you find your photographer, TNT Designs by Tresa Timpa? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer is my mom. I don't like to take pictures but since I am finally graduating, I did my best. The best part was having my mom as my photographer. My favorite part of the session was how silly she was being to try to get me to give a good smile. She fell over taking my pictures and that was funny.

I realized on this trip that I could help make a difference in other people just through kindness and sharing my heart. I am not yet positive which career path I would like to take. However, I know I want to be able to help others along the way.

How did you find your photographer, Brian Wintrode Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer, Brian Wintrode is awesome at what he does. He dedicates a lot of time at my High School photographing events just because he loves being behind the camera. Many individuals use Mr. Wintrode for senior portraits and mini sessions as well because of his excellent work along with reasonable prices. My interest was sparked in him as a photographer after viewing photos of friends as well as seeing him at sporting events. I enjoyed working with Mr. Wintrode. He has creative ideas and is just fun. I also loved how fast he was able to produce my photos!

Nomination & Photography by Olivia Henry Photography
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Adyson’s inspiring blend of talent and kindness illuminates every step she takes. As a dancer, her grace and dedication transcend mere movement, speaking volumes about perseverance and passion. Yet, it's her kind heart that truly sets her apart, radiating warmth and compassion in all she does. Adyson embodies the power of using one's gifts to uplift others, reminding us that true inspiration stems not only from skill but from the goodness within.
Photography by Olivia Henry Photography
Tell us about your dance career.
My dance career started at the early age of about 4 years old. My mom put me into classes for fun and I ended up loving it so much! What started as a fun activity turned into a hobby, and now a lifestyle! I currently dance almost every day of the week in different styles ranging from ballet to ballroom dance, and I’ve tried almost any style you can think of!

What is the most rewarding thing about dancing for you?
There is nothing more rewarding about dance than being able to inspire young girls to pursue their dreams. I was once a young dancer watching the “big girls” through the studio window, so to make those kids feel like anything is possible is such an incredible feeling. It makes me feel as though I’m inspiring the future generations of the world!

What is next for you in the world of dancing?
I’m headed to the big stages! It’s my dream and lifelong goal to perform on a Broadway stage or travel with a dance company around the world. Even though that’s currently what my mind is set on, I always plan to keep trying new things and explore my options! I love photography, so to be able to combine my love for dance and taking photos would also be a fun experience!

What do you wish non-dancers knew about dancers/dancing?
I wish that people who don’t dance could understand how it’s an art form and equally a sport. Many people see dance on a surface level, but when you get into it it’s so much deeper than that! Teams train and work hard to compete against each other like any other sport would, and it’s just as physically challenging (if not more!) than other common sports. At the same time, however, dance is also a way to communicate and display artistic vision that is used in cultures and lifestyles worldwide.

How is your dance team different from your drill team?
Studio dance is different than drill team because, for me, it focuses on the more artistic aspects of moving. Teachers will challenge us to take a piece of choreography and put our style on it while also maintaining the details they taught us. However, the drill team's focus is more on being uniform and creating visuals for the audience. I love both equally, and I can honestly say transitioning between the two is not as easy as it might sound, but I would never ask for any different way to spend my time!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love participating in activities and being a leader or role model for others. I also have a goal to make an impact on the world in some way, whether this means my community, my friends, or strangers. I have started to do this by being creative and passionate with everything I do, but also using my integrity to do the right thing and bring up those around me.

Describe a time when you got to be a leader.
Recently I led my first practice as the First Lieutenant of my drill team. It was pretty scary at first because I had never commanded that many girls at once, and I knew they were all following my lead! Despite my worries, I reminded myself that everything would be okay and they were there to support me! It ended up going amazing because I stayed true to myself and my personality. It made me realize how much I love to help others enjoy dance just as much as I do!

Describe your personal leadership style.
My leadership style is all about balance. I want to find the perfect amount of strength so I can be respected among others, but also allow time for others to voice their opinions and feelings so they are respected as well. I feel like it is also important to find a balance between “work” and “play” so that way nobody feels burnt out. Although there is no way to achieve literal perfection, I will always strive to do my best and satisfy the needs of myself and those around me!

If you could make an outstanding impact right now/ today, what would you do and how would you do it?
My main personal focus at the moment is becoming closer to God. With this being said, I would make an impact by loving others how Jesus loves every one of us every day. Showing even the smallest amount of kindness can make an impression on someone since you never know what they might be going through. Just talking to someone and listening about their day can make them feel appreciated and heard, and my kindness and encouragement might lead someone to accept God in their lives as I have.

What else would you like to talk about?
Along with dancing for a studio and drill team, I have participated in many activities such as theater and cheer. I have found my passion for performing and working alongside others, which has further allowed me to be a role model and help my teammates through anything. I have made it my goal to make everyone feel welcomed and appreciated no matter who they are!

What has been your favorite theater performance you got to perform and why?
I must say my favorite performance I’ve gotten to participate in was my high school’s production of The Addams Family. I walked into the show knowing nobody, and I left with some of the most incredible people as friends. The environment while rehearsing and performing was so supportive and welcoming, and it made me so excited to get on stage and be with those people, showing off all our hard work. I also got to help choreograph the dances for the show, so seeing my vision on the stage left me feeling so accomplished and overwhelmed with pride.

What character did you play, and how did it suit you?
Although I’ve been in many shows and played roles such as Gabriella in High School Musical, I chose this show as my favorite because I played part of the ensemble. This opened up so many opportunities for me since I got to help choreograph for the show and observe more of what was going on behind the scenes, which I’ve never really gotten the chance to do. This suited me well because I was able to play a flapper and even young Wednesday in a scene where I got to bring some of my dance training into the theater setting.

What is a memory with your cheer team that you will never forget?
I will never forget when my cheer team got to compete at a competition together! This may seem simple, but it was the first time our organization had ever done something like this, so it felt amazing to start a new tradition. We went out there and gave it our all and I felt so proud coming off the mat with the support and excitement from all the girls.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel very passionate about dance! It has always been my escape from reality during tough times. It seems as though nothing matters and I can clear my head when performing or taking a class. It also amazes me how dancers can be in a room with only walls and mirrors, yet we make impacts on the world with the messages and emotions that can be spread through our movement. I feel truly connected with myself when dancing, and I will always find it to be a version of therapy.

How did you find your photographer, Olivia Henry Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer, Olivia Henry, through Instagram! I have followed her for quite a while, and my first experience with her was our dance photoshoot together. I immediately noticed her welcoming and inviting attitude which made me feel so much more confident in front of the camera. I loved the way she would ask me about my interests and get to know me during the process, and I felt like we were truly friends when working together.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I can confidently say if I have a free day, I’m immediately calling my grandma to see what she’s up to! I love hanging out with her any chance I get. You could probably find us shopping around town or getting some lunch together.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I’m looking forward to traveling this year! I’m going on a trip to New York City and later on to Las Vegas! I’m usually super busy with activities so getting to travel with my family and explore the country is something I’m super duper excited about!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
the hardest thing I’ve ever had to accomplish is finding hope after losing someone I care about. I’ve learned how to overcome this by being open to talking about my feelings and finding the good in every day.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
TRY EVERYTHING!!! Just like the Zootopia song says! You never know what you might love until you try it, and being involved in what’s going on around you can connect you with new people while making memories you will have for a lifetime.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In the next 5 years, I plan on going to college to pursue my dance career. I would also like to push myself to do more involving modeling, like possibly signing with an agency or company of some sort.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Even though it may sound silly, I enjoy school! I love learning new things and educating myself, and completing assignments gives me something to focus on.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can wiggle my ears!

3 things on your bucket list…
Jump out of an airplane, be in a movie, and travel to every continent at least once!

Who do you find inspiring?
The person I find most inspiring is my little sister. I’m inspired by her every day because she has such a big heart and she always motivates me to be the best version of myself.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring to others because I am determined and hardworking. I don’t let anything stop me from trying new things and I always set goals for myself to get to where I want to be!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
If there is anything else I can tell you, it would be that JESUS LOVES YOU!

Jesus Puente Jr.

Jesus Puente Jr. – Texas
Nomination by Corrina Puente
Photography by Roxann Vaughan - Seniors By Vaughanadora
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jesus Puente Jr. learned in second grade after retention, that dyslexia is a challenge but not an excuse to not excel academically. Both Dr and psychologist diagnosed ADHD and severe dyslexia. Jesus learned that academic success would be a matter of hard work and endurance. Working harder than his peers didn't stop him. Jesus used dyslexia as a stepping stool to excel at school while involved in Varsity tennis and football. Jesus hopes to inspire others to never give up or quit!

Photography by Roxann Vaughn Photography

What do you wish other people knew about dyslexia?
I wish other people understood that dyslexic people do not have low intelligence or are not lazy. It is a learning disability, something that the human eye cannot see but if you pay attention you can recognize. As a dyslexic student I have faced a lot of learning difficulties. I must work a bit harder than others; my brain works different, I confuse my left and right, I misspell words and constantly must reread what I write. We struggle understanding instructions but if you are patient with us – we will give you 100% of ourselves!

What is something good that has happened because of your dyslexia that may not have happened otherwise?
Something good that has happened because of my dyslexia that may not have happened otherwise is my attendance and academic goals that I have set for myself. Just because I have dyslexia does not mean I do not have to put in effort, as a student and athlete I had to learn to set priorities, seek tutoring to maintain my grades and ensure I attended school to maintain my academic goals I set for myself.

Tell us about your tennis career.
About my tennis career, I started playing tennis in January 2023, my Junior year in High School. At first, I was hesitant about tennis because I played Pee Wee football as a child and proceeded to play football for my Junior High and High School years. I thought tennis was not for me and a boring sport. But thought of giving it a shot and now that I see how fun this sport is, the friendships made and the team bonding instilled by our Coach Branum, I wish I had joined sooner.

What is a favorite memory with your tennis team?
A favorite memory with my tennis team is when the tennis team and I went out for dinner after a tournament, and we ate at Jalisco Mexican Restaurant and the guys were joking with me and they said I would not smack my best friend Marcos Garcia with a tortilla that had butter all over it. As soon as Marco turned to look my direction, I took the tortilla and slapped him with it! These are unforgettable moments to me because I have never experienced team bonding in any other sport as I do in tennis.

What is your next goal with tennis?
What is my next goal with tennis? My next goal with tennis is to enter weekly UTR tournaments around Texas which will improve my ranking.

What made you want to play football and what do you love most about the sport?
I started playing football, I think I was 12 years old. I came home from school one day and told my parents I wanted to play football, a sport I had never played nor watched. My parents disagreed with me playing football, especially my mom. Since my dad signed me up, he asked if he could help the football coach, and later became the assistant coach of my football team. Let me tell you I was lost, did not know offense and defense was and thought I broke a couple bones whenever I got tackled. But my dad and my Coach Scott showed me how to lower my shoulder and hit back. Those were the Coaches and best memories I have of football!

What position do you play and why does it suit you?
The position I played in PeeWee football and Junior High was running back. In High School I played positions I had no clue I could handle. I played outside linebacker, inside linebacker, nose guard, middle linebacker, corner, running back, fullback, lineman, and punter. The most challenging was playing the lineman position as a 150lb, 5 ft. 9 in tall guy. I faced some giants but never let that get to me. I always gave 100% no matter the size of the person in front of me- like dyslexia- I faced the giant!

What is a favorite accomplishment with football?
My favorite accomplishment with football was not knowing what defense and offense was, confusing my left and right, to be given the opportunity to play almost every position in football. I had the honor to play Varsity Football for Carrizo Springs High School and for this I am thankful to the Coaches and staff for this opportunity.

What do you have left to accomplish your senior year?
What do I have left to accomplish my senior year, I set my personal goal the beginning of this school year. Although my GPA was good, I wanted to bring it up higher. I made it a point to maintain an A & B average throughout my senior year all while playing Varsity Football and Varsity Tennis. I think I can leave my High School Senior year feeling I gave it my all, I will leave knowing I gave my Elementary, Intermediate, Junior High and High School teachers and its staff my respect.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind to younger classmen?
The legacy I hope to leave behind to younger classmen is even though you might go through hard times in school and extracurricular activities, always stay focused on positive and work on yourself to get “1% better every day” as Coach Abshire would say.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
The inspiring things about me that my nomination does not cover is that I am a member of First Baptist Church of Carrizo Springs and Youth Ministry. I would volunteer some of my summer days to an event called “HOTT DAYS”. This ministry helps churches needing work done, such as cutting grass or painting the buildings. I also volunteered for our Vacation Bible School. As a son, student, athlete I give all honor to God for allowing me to have the strength to keep my faith and seek Him in prayer. I also am part of an awesome modeling team for Roxann Vaughn/Seniors by Vaughanadora.

The inspiring thing about me, not on the nomination form is also who helped me along my journey. Being scared to go to school and scared that the teacher would call on me to read. But these people never gave up on me and were the push I needed.

My Dad & Mom have been and will be my number one support. My mom became my advocate and got help. That help was Ms. Rodriguez." Ms. Rodriguez was my dyslexia teacher that guided me and helped me with my reading and my teachers Mrs. Salazar and Mrs. Morones.

What else would you like to talk about?
The other thing I would like to talk about briefly is what I had to do to overcome this fear and use this diagnosis as a stepping stool. One thing I remember is my mom telling me “Do not use dyslexia as an excuse to not try". In school, went every day for 30 minutes to dyslexia class, and once home I had to continue with my reading, my chores, and sports. I played football and baseball as a child. But football was my comfort zone. Football was my form or my way of releasing the stress and fear.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
What do I feel passionate about or could talk about forever? I could talk about sports forever, but I know that my education is something noone can take away from me. This has pushed me to make sure I keep my grades and better my GPA in school. Did I have to work hard, yes, sometimes a bit harder than my peers. Would I get discouraged? Yes, but as my parents always told me they did not raise quitters, so I had to try and try and not give up.

How did you find your photographer, RoxannLynn Vaughan?
I remember my photographer when I was little because she was my youngest brother baseball coach. Once I had social media, I would see the great pictures that Roxann would take.

What was your experience like?
My experience with Roxanne has been and is great. She is not just my photographer; she has become someone that helped me feel comfortable and confident.

What did you love most about it?
What I love most about my photographer, so many things. The way she makes me laugh while taking pictures, her personality, her jokes, the way she allows me to be myself and use my style, my choice of clothing.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it, you would find me welding. This is one of my hobbies I like to do. I have been a welding student since my freshman year in High School. I will be graduating from SWTJC with a welding certificate in May 2024.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
What is up next for me that I am super excited about? Life! I will get to experience the workforce. A paying job! Put my budgeting skills to use. I plan on pursuing a trade at Southwest Texas Junior College Powerlineman/CDL while working parttime as a welder’s helper in the summer.

Photography by Michael Sullivan Photography

What is your dance schedule like - walk us through a typical day and week.
My dance schedule is very busy. On Tuesdays, I have hip-hop and open mobility. On Wednesdays, I have the most dance classes which are tap, ballet, jazz, musical theater and technique class. On Thursdays, I have another hip-hop and contemporary. Lastly, on Sunday, I have my solo practice so I could get better at my contemporary solo for the next competition!

What do you love most about dancing?
What I love most about dancing is how I meet so many different people that are now my friends. Dance is always a fun and unique way to bring my family and friends together. Another thing, I love about being a dancer is how I get so many opportunities from my dance teachers. My dance teachers help me to have better technique so I can become a better dancer. The most important thing, about dance is how dance allows me to express myself in a unique and powerful way. Dance it’s my form of healing.

Which is your favorite style of dance and why?
My favorite type of dance is contemporary. Contemporary allows me to express my feelings and let go of any stresses. Contemporary dance allows me to have creativity in the movements unlike any other dance styles. This type of dance allows me to communicate with my emotions through every inch of my body that’s why I love it.

If you could be on any dance reality show, what one would it be? What would you wear, dance to, all the details!
"Dancing with the Stars" is the dance reality show I would most like to be on! It would be an amazing experience to share my dancing abilities in front of celebrities and professional dancers.
In terms of fashion choices, I would choose a glamorous outfit that sparkles. Something like a long, flowy orange ballroom dress covered in sequins and beautiful beading. For the dance, I would like to do a ballroom dance or maybe a salsa dance. Although I never had tried salsa or ballroom dance, I always wanted to try it. I always watch Dancing with the Stars and they are always amazing with their salsa and ballroom dances. Dancing with the Stars inspires me to try different dances that I never have tried before.

What do you wish non dancers knew about dancing?
I wish non-dancers understood that dancing is more than just flawless technique. It's all about letting go of your barriers, feeling the music, and expressing yourself. It's a kind of art where you use movement to communicate stories and connect with your emotions. Regardless of your age, body type, or ability level, everyone can dance.

What has been your most adventure exploration of nature and why?
The most adventurous exploration of nature was when I went on a trip to Florida to the crystal river and swam with the manatees. It was the most amazing experience ever. I even swam next to a pregnant manatee and a baby it was very cool to see. It was such a cool experience and I would definitely want to do it again.

My friend group is very energetic. We all love to be in school together and go on FaceTime after school and talk. we always try to help each other with our dance routines.

I would say my friends would describe me as a fun chatty out going person and that I'm a person they can always talk to and will make time for them. They would also describe me as a very loyal and caring friend.

What made you choose marine biology to study?
The ocean and its mysterious, amazing organisms and animals are the reasons I want to study marine biology. I would love to do marine biology because I would help the animals be put in better habitats that are endangered.

My nana has taught me many different life lessons throughout my time with her. She was a very special person to me and it was very hard to lose her. I always feel like she is next to me teaching me and judging me to be a better person. My favorite memories are when I used to watch Say Yes To The Dress with her, when we went on vacations to Florida with family, and when she would support me at my dance recitals/competitions. I love my nana. She means so much to me and my whole family.

How do you inspire others to chase their dreams?
The best way to inspire others to chase their dreams is by showing them that you're chasing yours! When they see your passion and determination, it can motivate them to go after what they want.

Tell us about Love Beyond Bars and what it means to you.
I founded "Love Beyond Bars" in order to offer hope to children with incarcerated parents. It means a lot to me because I was once in their shoes. Now, I have the opportunity to share my journey, providing support and encouragement to children facing similar circumstances.

What is the Angel Tree program and how do you participate in it? The Prison Fellowship Angel Tree program supports children with parents behind bars through numerous community-sponsored events. I participate by volunteering and supporting these activities. I also promote and spread awareness about the Angel Tree program in hopes of increasing community involvement for this great organization.

When did you get started in the Miss America's Teen organization and why? This is my first year in the Miss America’s Teen organization! I decided to get involved so I could learn and try new things. It also offers a platform to raise awareness about my community initiative and engage in volunteering for various impactful causes across Arizona. Lastly, the organization provides a variety of scholarships which presents a valuable opportunity for me to pursue higher education.

What have you learned about yourself in the process? Pageants have allowed me to learn so many things such as interviewing and public speaking skills. They have helped me gain confidence and believe in myself.

Tell us about your volunteer opportunities. Which has been your favorite and why? Aside from my involvement in the Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree program, I've dedicated my time to volunteering with several community organizations like Rae Rae of Light, Branching Out, and Helping One Woman. However, the highlight of my volunteer work has been organizing the collection, wrapping, and distribution of Christmas gifts for children, with each including a heartfelt message from their incarcerated parent.

How would you describe your leadership style? I strive to be inclusive and collaborative. I believe in listening to others, valuing their opinions, and working together to achieve our goals. I aim to inspire and empower those around me, fostering a positive and supportive environment.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I coordinated a Christmas "Angel Tree" project, gathering gifts and heartfelt messages for 315 children with incarcerated parents. I helped wrap over 700 presents and distributed them at a festive holiday party. Additionally, I volunteered with Prison Fellowship’s "Raising Up Kids to be Champions" Sports Camp where I spoke words of encouragement to over a hundred kids ages seven to ten. As a Stand Up, Speak Up leader, I launched a journal campaign to raise awareness about youth mental health challenges, including the critical Suicide Hotline number 988, and promoting speaking up for friends in need.

What else would you like to talk about?
Since the age of four, I've been singing with the dream of gracing the Broadway stage. Alongside this aspiration, I am interested in pursuing a career in law. Active in Performance Dance and  on my HS Pom Squad, I thrive in the world of dance. Currently holding the title of Miss Glendale's Teen, I'm gearing up to compete for the Miss Arizona's Teen crown in June as part of the Miss America's Teen scholarship program. Beyond my pursuits, I find joy in roller skating, jet skiing, engaging in "Scare Wars" with my Uncle, and swimming with the grace of a mermaid.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I'm deeply passionate about my community involvement with "Love Beyond Bars: Bringing Hope to Kids," where I share my story and support kids like me. I love sharing my passion for singing, dancing, and participating in pageants.

How did you find your photographer, Rori Glover Studios? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Rori Glover is an exceptional photographer. She's been taking my photos since I was 10, consistently making me feel and look beautiful. She's become more than just a photographer; she's someone I deeply admire and look up to.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?  You would find me and my friends making bracelets and selling them. One time, we made $350 and donated the money to support our local animal shelter.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?   In July, I will turn 15 years old and will finally be old enough to join the City of Goodyear’s Youth Council. As a member of the Youth Council, I not only will be able to expand my community initiative by working alongside city leaders, but support other kids with their projects. I super excited about this opportunity.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it? The hardest thing for me was having the confidence to share my story about my dad’s incarceration. However, I have realized it’s okay to go out of your comfort zone and I encourage other kids not to be embarrassed or scared.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today? It's important to set clear goals, stay focused, and never stop learning. Surround yourself with positive influences, seek opportunities to challenge yourself, and embrace failure as a stepping stone to growth for a “Winner Never Quits and a Quitter Never Wins”.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans? I will be performing on Broadway or on the Grammy stage as a solo artist while earning a law degree.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination? I love cheering on my HS football team on Friday nights.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? I used to be a competitive trampoline jumper.

3 Things on your bucket list: Audition for the “Voice”, be an Arizona Cardinals Cheerleader, and compete in the Miss America pageant.

Who do you find inspiring? My favorite artist is Billie Eilish because she doesn’t care what other people think and her music gives me inspiration to follow my own dream of becoming a singer one day.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring? I believe I inspire others because of my positive attitude and my passion for helping others. I always strive to be kind, supportive, and encouraging to those around me. Jayda Warehime – Colorado
Nomination & Photography by Carol Dunnigan Photography
Issue 78 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jayda is truly an Inspiring Teen! She's a Freshmen and a new Rep for me, but I can already tell that she's special - she's caring and has a great sense of humor. She was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, accompanied by Chronic Uveitis, when she was only 18 months old. This is an autoimmune disease that has manifested as joint pain, stiffness and limited range of motion. In her lifetime she's already had 388 infusions, 537 chemo injections, 974 needle pokes, 464 Childrens visits, and 5 birthdays in Childrens Hospital! This girl plays basketball and is in Track!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
At the age of 5, I started an organization called Jayda's Elves. For 10 years I have collected coloring books, crayons, puzzles, art projects etc.- all to be delivered to Children's Hospital in the hopes it calms the patients while they are receiving medical care, and they don't have to think about the medicine running through their bodies.
I have raised over $10,000 for the Arthritis Foundation to help fund research, community outreach, advocacy efforts and life improving programs.

What else would you like to talk about?
To this day, I have to go to Children's Hospital every 4-6 weeks for infusions. I just entered my freshman year of high school and am a 3-sport athlete. I love sports and being active, but this can take a serious toll on my body not to mention my mental health trying to fit it all in. I am very lucky to have parents who support me in every way possible. I would not be the student, athlete, friend, patient, or human without their constant guidance. I live by "I have arthritis, but arthritis does not have me."

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about giving back. Through my experience with my disease, I have learned that everyone has a story. That story cannot always be seen. It is important to always be kind. Treat others with decency and respect. I enjoy volunteering for our local food bank-making boxes for senior citizens and bagging after school food bags for school age children. My love for the outdoors has taken me to trash pickups along Colorado's most beautiful trails. I believe we all can make a difference, one kind act at a time.

How did you find your photographer, Carol Dunnigan Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
We followed each other on Instagram. I admired her work. With just my one session, she made it special, and I was able to see her creativity and fun personality. The photos were better than I could have imagined, and I was shocked to see myself in such a beautiful way. My favorite thing about my shoot was how we were able to be silly, have a great time and have such amazing results that I am so proud of. I am super excited for my future relationship with such an amazing woman.

Tell us about Rheumatoid Arthritis accompanied with Chronic Uveitis and how it affects you personally.
This arthritis occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own cells and tissues. For me, this disease has caused persistent joint pain, stiffness and swelling in my lower extremities-hips, knees, and ankles. This is something I have lived with since I was 18 months old. There is no cure, the goal is to control the pain and inflammation, improving function, and preventing joint damage. Chronic uveitis is inflammation in the eyes. This can lead to blurry vision and blindness if not treated. This affects me personally by having difficulties performing everyday chores, experiencing high levels of stress. Mornings are the most difficult as that is when my body is the stiffest. It can be a challenge when my mind wants to do one thing and my body is saying “whoa, slow it down, Jayda.”

What do you wish others knew about interacting with you or anyone else who has this?
I wish others knew that just because this disease cannot be seen, does not mean it is not real. If I am unable to participate in an activity, it is not because I am lazy, grumpy or not engaged, I am physically hurting to the point I cannot join the event. I wish others knew how hard it is to be in pain every day. How much this disease dictates what I do and for how long I can do it.

What impact has having this played on your skill levels and mental well being?
This has had a significant impact on my abilities and mental wellbeing. I am a 3-sport athlete, I sure give it my all every time I am on the court or field but I have limitations. My body does not move like an average teen, I have to make adjustments which affects my game. This also affects my mental wellbeing by not being able to do what I want to do, how I want to do it. I have learned my way is ok. Being able to participate is a win. I have learned that nothing is impossible, and I should never give up and always keep reaching. This is where true grit comes from.

Tell us about your basketball career.
I started basketball in kindergarten. I have played every year for 10 years now. Basketball is by far my favorite sport; it is my favorite to play and watch. My love for the game shows on the court through my personality. As I have gotten older, the seasons have gotten longer, practices and games more intense, and expectations have increased. This can sometimes be a challenge, but I wake up and show up every day. I am proud of myself for pushing through and earning a varsity letter as a freshman.

What position do you play and how does it suit you?
My position is a wing. The wing positions are shooting guard and small forward. This suits me as you should be able to make open jump shots with consistency while also being able to sprint around screens to open spots on the floor. You also should be able to create your own shots by driving the ball. You should have a good balance of size and strength, another reason this position suits me.

Are you watching women's college basketball this year and especially the road to the final 4 and so on? If so, what are you taking away from this season and everything that has come forward for college players and women in the sport in general?
I am absolutely watching this season and taking in so much. From passing techniques, defensive moves, and shooting. I am also closely watching the attitudes of the players on the court. How are they handling a bad call? A loss? How are they treating their teammates? This is just as important. Especially for the younger children watching. I do feel this is an exciting time for women’s basketball. Watching Caitlin Clark break record after record has been amazing to witness. For the first time, women’s basketball is selling out tickets, breaking viewing records and has fans from all over the country. I am so glad I get to watch all this happen.

What do you participate in track, and which is your favorite and why?
In track, I am on the varsity throwing team. My favorite is shotput and discuss. This is perfect for me as it gives my lower extremities a much-needed break. These events are extremely fun for me, and I like challenging myself to see how much I can improve week after week. My goal is to make it to state as a freshman.

What is one of your proudest track moments?
My proudest track moments are being able to break my own records. I am improving every week. That is exciting. High school sports can be a challenge when freshman compete against all upper classmen. When I can finish in the top 8 with over 80 participants, I could not be prouder.

What is a favorite memory with your track team?
The season just started, and this is my first season on the high school team. So far, my favorite memory is the ability to be silly. Track is usually an 8-hour day, but it is a very relaxed chill setting. Always fun to hang out with the team and be our childish selves.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have had to accomplish is realizing my disease is not a death sentence. Yes, I have limitations, but I am very much a highly functioning accomplished teen. No way possible for me to be where I am today without the support of family and friends. I have an amazing support system.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Always believe you got this. God knows what he is doing and never gives us more than we can handle. Mountains were made to be climbed.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I should be a sophomore in college earning a degree in physical therapy. I would love to be able to help children with the same disease and limitations I face. My physical therapist helped me be the athlete I am today.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love photography. Editing and thinking outside the box is my favorite.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I am a good drawer. I was hesitant to take an art class this year, but I am so glad I did. I was able to see how creative I can be.

3 Things on your bucket list Visit:
I love to travel so my bucket list is to visit places I have never been like Paris, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my beautiful mom inspiring. Not only to me, but my friends, her coworkers, family, and family friends all call her Mama Rhonda. She is always available when someone needs an ear, advice or even a hug. My mom works extremely hard. Works to keep our home in order. Works to make sure all my medical, emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual needs are met. Volunteers 20-30 hours a month for different organizations. She also works her demanding 40-hour week job. She does all of this with a smile on her face and a dance in her step. She is such a positive person, she gets super involved in school and community events, and she doesn’t know a stranger. To watch her care for others, friends or strangers is truly inspiring. She makes a difference in other people’s world every single day. She is constantly encouraging me to reach for the stars and maximize my fullest potential. She is raising me to become a thriving successful young woman. I am proud and honored that she is my mom and I inspire to be just like her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
This is a great question. I did not think I was inspiring. I am just trying to be me and do the right thing for others. It was brought to my attention by others why they feel I am inspiring to them. After hearing their versions, I do see it now. I always give 110% of everything I take on. I do not believe in giving up or using my disease as an excuse to not be my best. I get up, look up, and show up. I know God has my back. I believe everyone has a story and we should treat people with kindness. A simple hello, have a great day can make the difference for someone. I do well in school, have great relationships with staff and students, I have confidence, easy to talk to, and friendly. I also enjoy giving back every chance I get.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am very proud of the work I put in for my 1st year of high school and that I will leave my freshman year with 4 varsity letters and good grades. It has been a very successful year.

Photography by Shawn Stinson Photography LLC
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I began dancing at the age of 3 years old. First starting with ballett, and then progressed to various styles of dance. It's has taught me alot about perseverance, having confidence, how to accept positive criticism and sportsmanship. I have gained so many wonderful friendships through dance that I will cherish forever.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am a junior currently enrolled in health science classes at my high school where I will obtain my state register nursing assistant license. After graduating next year I plan to pursue a degree in nursing with hopes of being a neonatal pediatric nurse. I have a passion for caring for others especially babies.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I find passion in being a positive role model within the dance community. It's important to me that I not only support my own teammates but other dance companies we compete against. We can all learn so much from each other. I believe in being supportive of everyone and not forming so called clichés that would isolate a dancer or make them feel any less valued. I consider myself so lucky to be a part of such a loving and positive dance studio.

How did you find your photographer, Shawn Stinson Photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer actually takes all our dance photos for the studio, so I had met him previously. He made the whole process easy, and laid back. His ability to capture the perfect shadow, lighting, and angle was so impressive to me. I loved that the session was fun for me, and it also made me feel special. I look forward to working with him in the future!

Tell us about your dance competition team. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My dance studio is Main Street Dance Company located in Monticello, KY. Our competition team consist of 31 dancers ranging in the age of 3-18. I feel as though I fit in best with the senior dancers as we have a very strong bond. Most of us have danced together for 6 years. I tend to stand out amongst the younger dancers in our studio. They come to me when they are feeling nervous or anxious as they know I will be there with a big hug, support, and encouraging words for them.

What has been your favorite competition to dance in and why?
Rainbow Dance Competition is the ultimate dance party making it my favorite! It's such a fun and positive environment to be in. I love that I get to interact with the competition director and staff. The awards ceremony is an absolute blast! Dancing your heart out and then celebrating with everyone on stage after is the perfect ending to a competition.

Pick one dance where you won an award and tell us about it.
As difficult as it is to choose just one dance I would have to say it would be my solo from the Chicago musical called " Good To Momma". choreographed by Danika Delgado and Mandy Vice. I wore a red costume with feathers and lots of diamonds that looked stunning on stage! At Platinum Regional Dance Competition I was awarded with first place, a double platinum, artist of the year nomination, a scholarship towards our nationals competition, and discovery spotlight.

Walk us through a typical day in the life of your dance studies.
A typical day of dance training for me is arriving at the studio around 4PM after school and I am usually there until 8 or 9PM most nights. I focus on different aspects of dance training like ballet, technique, strength, flexibility, and even gymnastics. I also have specific practices for each dance I am preparing in for competition season. It's a jam packed schedule, but I absolutely love it!

Tell us about what dance means to you.
Dance holds such a special place in my heart. It's not just about the steps and movements. It's about incredible friendships and connections I form with my teammates and coaches. Dance allows me to express myself fully engaging our minds, bodies, and spirits. It's a powerful way to communicate emotions and connect others when we step onto that stage. I am truly grateful for the joy and fulfillment dance brings to my life.

What do you enjoy doing most with children?
Interacting with children brings so much joy and fulfillment. I love being able to make them laugh, seeing their smiles light up the room and creating fun and memorable experiences for them. It's amazing how their laughter and happiness can be contagious. Children have a special way of brightening our days, and I cherish every moment spent with them.

What has working with babies taught you?
When it comes to working with babies, I've learned so much about nurturing and caring for their needs. It's all about being there for them, soothing them when they're upset, and creating a safe and loving environment.

How would you describe your leadership style?
As for my leadership style, I like to be encouraging and positive, reminding my teammates that we can do hard things. I believe in having courage and adaptability, especially when things don't go as planned on stage. Being able to adapt quickly is key!

What is your strongest leadership quality?
I would say my strongest leadership quality is being confident. Confidence is such a powerful leadership quality especially in world of performing arts. Confidence not only motivates myself but also encourages my team to work hard and reach our goals.

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
Most of my friends are fellow dancers. We have a strong bond and share common passion for dance. Shopping, going out to eat and thrifting together is a blast! It's great to have friends who enjoy similar activities and we can create amazing memories together.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
A favorite family memory I will never forget would have to be my first trip to the Panama City Beach. We went with eleven other family members and just had the best time ever. We played at the beach, pools, ate tons of great food and made countless memories together.
