Hailey Carr - Arkansas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Lynn Caul
Photography by James Bickham Visuals
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Hailey Carr is such an amazing person! She loves basketball, math and animals. I love to see her face light up when she speaks of helping younger grades in basketball drills. She is an amazing role model for young girls! She would be a great addition to your magazine for kids to look up to! I know my niece Emily wants to be just like her!

When did you start playing basketball? Who or what inspired you to start playing?
I started playing basketball in the 2nd grade, and my brother and dad inspired me to start playing.

How have you used basketball to help and connect the children in your community?
I have used basketball to help the children in my community understand that doing everything to the best of your ability will pay off in the end. I have worked on my game since 2nd grade, and every single workout helped me lead my team to the state finals and get an athletic scholarship to William's Baptist University. I used basketball to help connect children in my community by showing them how to make friends through the game and to put their effort together to help make the community better.

How do you help your school clubs plan events for the community?
I usually just bring in ideas, provide my input on the different options, and help them set up a time and place for the event. Our clubs usually meet during lunch time for multiple days, and everything would be planned then. The final decisions would be made, and we would get ready for the event.

What event that you have planned for your community has been the most memorable?
The most memorable event for me is Science Night. Our Science club hosts this event for the community, and all the members help make it happen. It was most memorable, because I enjoyed watching all the children and adults have an amazing time, while learning new things about animals, bones, human organs, and even DNA.

I know that you are on your high school bowling team, can you tell me more about this? What do matches and practices look like? How did you get involved?
I got involved in bowling in the 9th grade, because my brother bowled. The teams are separated by gender. Only 6 people can bowl, but you can change out the bowlers. You practice by playing against other teams, so technically the matches and practices are the same thing. We do have a district and state, and you can qualify for state individually or as a team. At both District and State, you bowl 3 games individually and 3 as a team. They give out an award for 1-3 places for both teams and individuals.

What inspired you to want to become a veterinarian in the future?
I have been around animals my entire life with my family owning 4 labs and my grandfather having a cattle farm. I have helped every animal I come across as much as I can, even though my family hates when I pick up strays. So, I felt being a veterinarian would be best for me, because I get to take care of animals on a daily basis

She is a dedicated strong ballerina with diabetes. She is currently in her 7th year at Roanoke Ballet Theatre and City Youth Ballet, with Sandra Meythaler, Lee Ann Elders, and Renee Aguilera. What has it been like dancing for 14 years, and what do you love most about ballet?
In 14 years, I have progressed to the highest level of training at Roanoke Ballet Theatre. It’s been a lot of commitment and dedication to achieve new roles. In 2019, I received a role in Giselle as Willies after being an understudy for a professional ballerina.
I enjoy the music and love the art of dance.

Tell me a little bit about how the 7 years you have spent at Roanoke Ballet Theatre and City Youth Ballet and the different teachers that you have had?
I was 10 when I started at RBT, shortly after being diagnosed as a T1D. I felt the high and lows of my glucose during classes. It challenged me to keep the pace with my new friends. I managed to find the balance of eating well, exercise, and rest.

What challenges have you faced by having Type 1 Diabetes, but how have you become an inspiration to others because of it?
I believing by making each day count as a blessing not a curse. I am a strong T1D BALLERINA. I am thankful for my dexcom6 and feeling bionic with it. I want to do what I love, and each day is a blessing.

Can you tell me more of the ways you have managed homeschooling while also being committed to ballet 30 hours a week?
I have been homeschooling for 11 years. I do all my studies in the mornings and train in the afternoons and every Saturday. The technical weeks prior to our productions my schedule changes. Homeschooling allows my schedule to be flexible.

What has been your favorite memory so far through ballet and what are you looking forward to most about becoming a professional ballerina?
My favorite memory in ballet is receiving my first pair of soft demi pointe shoes and entering the official pointe shoes, DUVAL.
My favorite ballet role was in Giselle, as Willis. Giselle is a romantic ballet as it is a love story and features very romantic ideas such as one's heart breaking, true love and love beyond the reaches of death. The heart felt music is Adolphe Adams which is taken from his inspiration from a poem by Heinrich Heine.
The ballet taught me a lot about acceptance and forgiveness.
I was an under study for the core piece Willis. Unfortunately, a company member dancer was injured and I earned the spot.
Then, ALL eyes were on me to carry out the role. I felt the injured dancer's disappointment for her loss. It wasn't easy for her to let go. In the end, the dancer congratulated me on doing a great job.

As an inspiration to others, what help or advice would you give to other teens with compromised health challenges and how to remain positive?
My advice is to believe in yourself, do the best to your ability, live your BEST life to your own expectations. ONLY YOU can do this for yourself.
You can remain positive by being accountable, breathe in and exhale gratitude for each day. We all have goals and dreams despite having compromised health. Each day find satisfaction in setting small goals and accomplishing them one step at a time.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
My hardest accomplishment is controlling my glucose. My Dexcom6 has helped me to achieve this.

Picture
Photography by Laura White Photo
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice is to focus on balancing health, exercise and rest.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I hope to travel abroad as a ballerina.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activity is being with friends and family.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent would be drawing and painting artwork. I love art.

3 Things on your bucket list
My top 3 answers on my bucket list are
1. get a hummingbird tattoo for my Cherokee name Walayla,
2. go skydive, and
3. a pancreas transplant.

Who do you find inspiring?
My grandmother Gina Brinegar

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I haven't really thought about being an inspiration until now....thank you for the time to reflect on how I make a difference.

Anything else you would like to share?
My favorite color is black.

Emelie Gast - Germany
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Dieter Gast
Photography by Wildfire Studios Aberdeen South Dakota
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Emelie Gast is a very engaged and motivated teen in different areas. Since she was a girl she started to sing and to play the piano. She was a member of the best choir of Germany in 2017 and she had several concerts every year. Beside this she likes to attend in the plays and musicals. Every part she did in the past was outstanding and with so much enthusiasm and engagement. While she was an exchange student in Aberdeen 2019/20 she passed the audition for the Show Choir, Acappella Choir, Fall Play, One-Act-Play and Spring Musical. Because of her attitude, her motivation and her positive personality she was awarded as student of the month in November 2019 from Forte International.
At the beginning of 2019 she was selected as president of our national student parliament. She had to lead the discussion and did some statements to the television. At the end of this school year she was awarded for her special engagement for her school. She is a wonderful teen and I can highly recommend to everyone to vote for Emelie. She definitely deserved it!

How did you get involved in choir? Tell me more about what being in these choral groups is like?
Since I was little, I really enjoyed singing and listening to music. Every year the choir holds a Christmas concert, which my family and I have attended each year since I can remember. I was about 8 years old when I finally joined this choir. It is just a nice feeling to be involved in a group where everyone has the same interests as you.
The team spirits in this group was unbelievable. We stick together and help each other.
We won so many competitions traveling all over Europe.
In 2017 we won the German-choir competition with the title best choir in Germany.
For me it was very important to have the opportunity to sing in a choir during my exchange year. I am so glad that I joined A-cappella and show choir. I have learned and saw so much.

What has been your favorite concert or musical you have performed in? Why?
My favorite musical has been Clue. It was a one-act play based on the board game, Clue. I performed it along with classmates at my U.S high school this past February. I played the part of a maid and one of the body-major. We traveled to Sioux Falls, SD on a 3-day journey and performed our musical for a competition. We also saw many other one act. Our group got a Superior rating.

What inspired you to want to do an exchange year abroad? Why?
My dream has always being able to travel and see the world. I have always been fascinated with learning how the American school system works; the lifestyles of the people and what their food tasted like. A few years ago, my sister Lisa did a semester abroad in San Diego. She talked about her fantastic semester and that she learned a lot. I wanted to do that as well. But I didn’t want to wait until college, I wanted to do it as fast as possible. It was my dream. I’ve worked, and studied a lot to live my dream and I would do it every day again.

What is your favorite moment from your exchange year? Why?
I had so many beautiful and amazing moments. One of my favorites is the day that I actually arrived and met my host family in person. I was excited and nervous to embark on this amazing journey. I had waited 7 months for this moment; and there it was, and my dream was coming true. It was just an unbelievable moment in my life.
Picture
Photography by Dieter Gast
I know you were elected as the President of your National Student Parliament, tell me more about this, what does this job involve?
My task was to open the Plenary session and to keep everything under control.
It was up to me to say who had the floor and was allowed to speak next. Another task was, that I had to announce the various votes and also check the results.
At the end, the results of the votes were repeated and recorded.
Giving a speech in front of the Parliament as well as the following interviews on television were very exciting and educative.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to other teenager would be to believe in yourself. Be brave try new things and don’t give up. Fight for your dreams and always strive to be a better version of yourself every day!

Mallory Whiteside - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Kimberly Scott
Photography by Leslie VanDyke Photo
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Mallory Whiteside has volunteered for many years within her church, during Vacation Bible School and other activities, acting as an amazing role model to the youth. She never misses any opportunity that comes her way to help others. I have watched her work hard to study and stay in the top of her class without ever giving up being accepted into the college of her choice. Although her Senior year has been cut short, she remains positive, continues applying for scholarships endlessly and not giving up on schoolwork, while also keeping up her dual credit college courses. The list of achievements and leadership she continues to show keeps growing daily. As a mother, I could only look back and wish I could have been half the young lady she is and will become.

Tell me more about what it is like volunteering for your church and its Vacation Bible School, what does this entail?
Volunteering at my church is something that I take pride in. I especially love to work with the kids during Vacation Bible School. They remind me of the simpler things in life like laughing, showing love, and having empathy.

Since you senior year has been cut short, what are some things you have been doing to pass the time in quarantine?
Since the shelter-in-place has been issued in my town, I have taken up several hobbies I wouldn’t have otherwise started. I have been spending a lot of time skateboarding, embroidering, swimming, and reading!
Picture

Who or what has inspired you to get through this tough time of your life?
Faith has always been a big part of my life, so without God I don’t know if I would’ve had any inspiration during this time. I know that His plan is greater.

What are you most excited about for your future? Why?
I’m most excited about my future because I am ready for the next phase in my life! I got accepted to my dream college and can’t wait to make memories that will last me a lifetime!

Madison Coverson - Georgia
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Tiffani Bray Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Madison Coverson is a Class of 2020 senior at LaGrange High School. She is such an amazing student athlete with a bright future! After high school she plans to attend a four-year university to become an engineer.

What is one way that you are a leader in your school and community?
I am a mentor to many of my younger peers. I am a tutor also. I volunteer in my church’s youth program to help children. I love helping at basketball camps that my school hosts. Many people in my community and schools look up to me because of the good I contribute when helping others in school and around my town.

Now, I know that you play basketball, tell me more about that.
I’ve been playing basketball since I was four. My mom and dad both played basketball growing up and simply passed down the “gene.” Growing up I fell in love with basketball myself from watching my dad play and going to games with him. I grew up wanting to play in college, but that changed after visiting a college for basketball. Basketball has and will always be my favorite sport.

What is one leadership skill that you have learned from basketball?
I learned how to be humble. To be a leader you don’t take all the credit or look down on someone. You don’t need recognition for all that you’ve done. I contributed a lot to my basketball team, and many times we’ve been up, and we’ve been down, but my attitude never changed. I encourage my teammates to be gracious for what we have and to go harder, but never change your attitude because what we worked so hard for can be taken.

What is one goal that you have for the future?
One of my biggest goals is to graduate college with my engineering degree. Many of my family members have gone to college, so I get to see the hardships they endure. In a college journey, there are many obstacles to overcome and graduating college is a big milestone going in not knowing what to expect and conquering the challenges.

What inspired you to want to major in engineering in college?
In school, math and science were my favorite subjects. I scored so well in those classes as well and my teachers would always tell me I’ll be a great engineer. I researched different types of engineering and chose the most interesting one to me- aerospace engineering.

The Nomination: Trinity Jagdeo started her 501c3 nonprofit organization at 17 years old. She publishes and illustrates books featuring kids with special needs and disabilities as superheroes. She is also a motivational speaker and travels to different colleges, schools and organizations. A portion of the proceeds made from the books goes to a family in need. Tell us about the nonprofit organization you started.
I started my nonprofit organization because of my best friend of 13 years who has spinal muscular atrophy. Throughout our friendship I learned the difficulties and financial struggles that people face with disabilities. Also, I learned how underrepresented the disability community is, so I decided to create a nonprofit that inspires people with special needs and disabilities. I publish and illustrate books that feature kids with disabilities as superheroes! And, a portion of the proceeds made from the books goes back to a family in need.

Tell us about the fashion show you are hosting.
The fashion show is called, “ I Love Me and My Disability”. My primary focus for hosting this event is to allow the disability community to be proud of who they are and what they look like! Our participants include people of all ages and all different disabilities.
Picture
Photography by Trinity

What is "Spotlights On You"? What does it do and how are you involved?
Spotlights On You is a show that I host where I bring on people from the special needs community. The idea is to highlight their journey, as their community is neglected in the entertainment industry. Along with that community, I bring on teens like myself to give them a platform where they can share the great things that they are doing in their community. I host this show, pick the content as well as the people!
Picture
Photography by Trinity's mom

Out of all the books you have published, which has been your favorite and why?
I really love all our books! I don’t think it would be fair to pick one book as my favorite as each book is based off local kids with disabilities in New Jersey. Each book is near and dear to my heart as I have created each story line, illustrated and, published each book. The books are so unique, as are the people who they are based off! Each book can be found on Amazon!

The Nomination: Isaiah Martin personifies the word inspirational! He has been active in many activities including President Student Council President at his Vo-Tech, FCA, FBLA, Skills-USA, Health Careers Club and band.
Outside of school, he’s a drummer for the worship team, helps at the monthly food drive, works with the church mission team and at MISSION:IMPACT each summer to inspire other teens to serve.
He was also the first senior in Missouri to complete the CNA program and begin working in our local hospital.
Isaiah is a hardworking, dependable and a blessing to everyone he meets and a great inspiration!

What inspired you to get so involved in your church and have such strong faith?
I've been in church all my life but the reason why I'm so involved in church and have faith is because I love God.

Now I know that you are a drummer in your worship team, how long ago did you start drumming, and what does being in the worship team involve?
I started drumming when I was 14. Being a part of the worship team involves staying at a constant level of being humble. Give glory to God before we try and take the glory for ourselves.

Picture
Photography by Light of the World Photography

When you work with the church mission team and at MISSION:IMPACT what do you do there?
During our mission camps I am part of our camp worship team and I'm a team leader. "Tropical Ninjas!" Also, my teams really did more of the grunt work because it was an all-male team.

What influenced you to complete the CNA program and start working at your local hospital?
My teacher Mrs. Sam is the biggest part of this. She worked on this apprenticeship three years and I was very blessed to be the first to do it. She pushed me all the way to the finish line.

What does work at the hospital involve? What jobs do you do there when you volunteer?

The hospital involves a list that I don't know if I can type it all out. As a CNA I help the nurses do anything they need me to do, I chart how much people eat, drink, and use the restroom. I also lift, move, and clean patients as need be to help prevent pressure ulcers.

In the last two years, he has taught himself how to play the guitar, which has become his passion. He is also the singer and rhythm guitarist in a local band with some of his closest friends who have all come together to share their talents with friends and family. Kyler shares that same love for music in a diverse way, as a member of the worship team at church. Music has driven Kyler to expand his skills and love of music and truly has formed him into the exceptional young man he is today. Kyler is planning to attend college and aspires to become a dentist; however, he plans to keep music a big part of his life. Kyler is the twin brother of Keaton, so scholarship opportunities will help assure his long-term college aspirations are successful.

Photography by Tishy Photography

How did you become interested in music?
Ever since I was younger, I have always had a strong liking for music. I would always sing in the car with my parents, and I would beat on the closest thing around me like a drum. It is kind of difficult to say exactly, but I know it has always been around me for as long as I can remember.

What were some ways you taught yourself how to play guitar? YouTube videos? Books? Or did it just come naturally to you?
When I first wanted to start learning guitar, I asked my buddy for help. He showed me a couple of guitar chords and I was on my way. I would come home from school every day to try to learn more guitar chords. I went to YouTube and searched for the most basic guitar chords; I would constantly practice those chords until I got them down pretty well. I have been playing guitar for about two years now, I am constantly picking up new techniques and learning songs to help me become a better guitar player.

Picture
Photography by Tishy Photography

Tell us a little bit about what you are involved in at your high school.
I am involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, PNG Indians Give, and band. In band, I have been on the drum line since my freshman year. I started out playing the bass drum and then I played snare drum the following year, for the past two years I have been playing the tenor drums, also known as the quads. I have also been a section leader for the past two years, and this year I was selected to be Vice President of the band.

Please tell us about the local rock band you are in called Klozure.
In my band Klozure, I sing lead vocals and play rhythm guitar, Shelby Balsano plays bass guitar, Hayden Snider is the drummer and Benton Nesmith is our newest guitarist. After tons of practice, we really played well together, and we started learning covers. After a while we started to write our own music and we have successfully completed one full song named Emerge. We still have to record the song and mix and master it before we release it to the public. We are constantly coming up with new ideas for songs and we plan to learn a lot of covers, so we can get various gigs.

Why do you think people rely on you for advice?
People tend to rely on me for advice because I am trustworthy and I give honest advice. I always do my best to help the people who ask for help, and to hopefully help anyone else around me.

What makes a good leader?
A good leader to me is someone who is willing to put themselves before others, always early to every event and offers to help in any situation. A good leader is a hard worker and a person people look to for advice. I do my best to follow these qualities and to set the example for the people around me.

Frank Vincent Evangelist - California
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Suzan Petersen Artistic Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Vincent is inspiring because of his unwavering commitment to become an engineer. Since he was a child, he has been fascinated by how things fit together and function. He began with Legos, graduated to mountain bikes, and after taking Automotive Engineering he worked with his Dad to rebuild a 1968 Bronco. He has attended engineering camps and is currently taking an engineering design class. Despite a significant illness during his junior year, he maintained his grades and is achieving his goals. He will be attending California State University Chico in the fall and studying Civil Engineering and Construction Management.
Picture
Photography by Suzan Petersen Artistic Photography

What are you looking forward to most about attending California State University Chico in the fall while also getting to study Civil Engineering and Construction Management?
I am looking forward to exploring a new place and meeting new people. I am ready to spread my wings after high school! I am excited to be able to study a topic that interests me and will be part of my career. Chico also has weekly events where employers come in and help the students with everything from interview skills and obtaining internships, I can't wait!

What do you enjoy most about mountain biking and how often do you spend your free time doing it?
One of the only upsides of the quarantine is that I have a lot of time to mountain bike! I go at least 3 times a week for about 2 hours. I have a ton of trails within 10 minutes of my home and there is rarely anyone in the steep areas where I bike. I can social distance, stay in shape, and release stress. I truly love it and feel at peace there.

Picture

How have you handled the challenges that have come with having celiac disease?
Celiac is an autoimmune disorder that causes my body to attack my digestive system when I eat gluten. When I eat at home, there is no problem. But going out, going to events, or traveling can be very challenging. Most school events include pizza or some other type of food I can't eat. It makes it hard to participate and be social as so many events are centered around food. I usually will eat before the event or bring my own. It is a little strange, but I am used to it.

How can your commitment to school and engineering despite the COVID-19 pandemic inspire other teens who are in a similar situation as you?
I am concerned how the pandemic will affect my freshman year of college. However, this is the situation the whole world is in and we have to be adaptable. I am trying to think ahead toward what classes will I take for my freshman year and which classes will be conducive to online learning. I just keep thinking that this too will pass, it is not a forever situation. I will still move ahead, complete my credits, and move toward my goals.

Taylor Clodfelter - Indiana
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Candice Clodfelter
Photography by Brian Williams Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Taylor Clodfelter is a very outgoing and inspiring senior to everyone who looks up to her. She has a heart of gold and helps anyone that she can. Taylor is the most energetic, stunning, caring, cheerful, and just an all-around amazing girl! She puts others in front of herself and does not think twice about it. Her senior year has been crashing down on her because of COVID-19 but every day, she wakes up in the morning and says, “You got to think on the bright side!” She even has been painting rocks with cheerful sayings. Just to get people through this rough patch with positivity! She has been putting them around the town of Fort Branch and Haubstadt so be on the lookout for some inspiring rocks! She started out with a rough life, but she has never let that phase her! ️ Her smile will always brighten any room she walks in!

How are you making the best of not having a senior year?
I have used some of this time babysitting to help people that still need to work. I found that long walks can be peaceful and therapeutic. Also spending a lot of time with my family and contemplating my future.

What inspired you to want to paint the rocks?
Unfortunately, with this pandemic, the world is scared. Our daily routines have been drastically changed, and loved ones are getting ill. I try to make the best of any situation, so I was trying to come up with ways to take people's minds off the negative, if even for just a few moments.
So while I would be walking around my rural home, I got the idea to paint rocks with motivations on them. I used phrases like “You can get thru this”, “Be the light in someone else’s day”, “Don’t let COVID win,” Wash those hands”, and many more. I then took these into town (I’m a country girl) and placed them in areas that people might walk by and see them. If I got a chuckle out of 1 person and made them forget about their worries for a moment, then it was all worth it.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is struggling during the COVID 19 pandemic?
Well I like to see the positive in any situation. So, my advice would be to not stress about things we cannot control. Be smart about your daily activities and stay safe. Take a walk, you just might find a painted rock! This will all be over someday.

How did you go from having a rough childhood to being so positive and cheerful girl?

Honestly, I think having a rough childhood made me into the positive person I am today. I went through so much negative early on, that I refuse to let that bother me now. So, in any situation, I typically look for the bright-side, and try to focus on that. I find the world is a much happier place that way.

What is one thing that has motivated you to get through the rough patches in your life?
I don’t want people to look at me and expect me to have a negative outlook on life. I want people to see my positivity and be inspired to overcome their own struggles. Also, I have found it is less exhausting to be a positive influence than it is to be a negative one.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t treat others in a way that you don’t want to be treated. Probably the best advice my Mom ever gave me.

Picture
Photography by Brian Williams Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I really enjoy modeling and would like to continue that in some form. My passion is working with animals, so I see myself in the Veterinary field in some aspect.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
It would be hanging out with my boyfriend of 3 years or modeling. Both make me happy.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Most people don’t know this about me, but I wrestled pigs in our local fair for several years. I absolutely loved doing this, because it was an awesome team building exercise with friends. If I’m being honest though, it’s probably because I am too tiny to wrestle an actual person. I’m tiny but mighty.

Picture

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?

I would say I don’t. I struggle with staying organized; I am generally guilty of living in the moment. I should probably work on that.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Swim with nice sharks
2. Visit the Bahamas
3. Skydiving

Who do you find inspiring?
When I think of the word inspiring the first person who comes to mind is my wonderful mother! My mom is very inspiring to me. I am more than proud to be her daughter in so many ways. Mainly, because she stood up for my siblings and I when no one else knew what we were going through. She has always helped me through anything and everything. When my grandmother passed away, that was very hard for my whole family. That was when she decided it was the time to move away from the problem. She became even stronger than she was and decided to be a single mother raising 3 children on her own. She has always told me “If you don’t have anything good to say don’t say anything at all” and “Don’t treat others how you wouldn’t want to be treated.” She has been the one I will always look up to, my role model. She has made me into the fearless, outgoing, and intelligent girl I am today.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I don’t feel like I inspire people, it feels odd to think about it that way. I am always being told my smiles can brighten any room, that I give the best hugs, and that I make people happy just by being around them. That’s just me being me though, not sure it’s inspiring.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I would like to take this time to thank Inspiring Teen Magazine for giving me this opportunity. It has been an amazing experience. I would also like to thank my mom for being here for me every step of the way. Lastly, I would like to thank my photographer Brian Williams from Shot By B, if it wasn’t for him none of this would be even happening.

Katie White - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Lyons Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I am nominating Katie because of her passion and determination. I have worked with her for over a year now and have loved watching her grow. Her passion for dance, love for other people, and joy to be around has been fun to watch. She embraces challenges and loves to learn new things. I look forward to seeing where her passion takes her.

What sparked your passion for dance, and what do you love most about dancing?
I began dancing at the age of 4. My mother put me in ballet and tap, and soon after I was dancing nonstop. My stage included the studio, outside and even the coffee table. I loved to dress in costumes and put on a show! I honestly don’t remember a time when I wasn’t in dance. Early on, my best friends were at the dance studio and for that reason I always wanted to be there. The things I love most about dancing are the lifelong friendships, the love and support from my teachers and the lessons that I have learned through the years.

What has dance meant to you in your life, and where do you see yourself in the future with dance?
Dance is my life! Long hours at the studio, hard work, injuries, and sometimes disappointments have all shaped my life. But with all those things I have also learned to work hard, support others, and to dedicate myself to the sport I love. Right now, my focus is on becoming my best self. I will be entering high school next year and my goal is to dance with the Academy Dance Company at my fine arts school as well as continue to work hard at my studio.

Picture

Which type of dance is your favorite, and what has been your favorite memory through dancing?
My favorite type of dance is ballet, with contemporary coming in as a close second. I have spent hours and hours working solely on my ballet technique and I feel that is also my strongest area of dance. I have so many wonderful memories, but my favorite memory was the year I auditioned and danced a season with dancers much older than I was. I was proud of myself for being selected to dance with them. That year pushed me to work extra hard and I learned so much from those older and more experienced dancers.

Picture
Photography by Lyons Photography

How do you continue to spread kindness to others, and how do you also help people feel loved and appreciated?
Kindness is huge! First and foremost, I treat others how I want to be treated. Ever since I was little, my mom always said to me “Pretty is as pretty does!” That has stuck with me. There is room in the world for everyone to shine.

As an inspiration, how do you spread joy and positivity to others through your passion in dance?
I think dance in itself is joyful. When I dance, I hope my feelings show through and my love for dance brings joy to those around me. Some of my favorite dance memories include mentoring and leading younger dancers. My joy and positivity guides them and also inspires them to love dance.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
If I could give advice to someone beginning their dance career it would be to have passion for what you are doing, always work hard, and take corrections from teachers and peers as learning experiences. There will always be someone better than you, but be your best self and that will be enough.

Deondre Buggage - Louisiana
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by David Williams Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Deondre Buggage is an inspirational student athlete. He has grown into a fine young man. I've watch him from the first time his dad put that ball in his hand to the excellent ball player he is now. He averaged 26 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest. He was selected 2nd Team All-State along with District MVP. His commitment to school and basketball has inspired youth in the neighborhood to follow suit and train like him.

What do you love most about playing basketball and how have you dedicated your time to the sport since you were little?
What I love most about basketball is the intensity of the game and the pressure of the big moments towards the end of a game because it brings the best out of everybody.  I have been training since I was about six years old; I have skipped out on parties and other events so I could get better to accomplish my goals.

Tell me about the achievements you have accomplished through basketball and your commitment to school.
I have accomplished plenty of achievements such as Region player of the year, District MVP, First team all-district, First Team All-State, Three-Point state champion, and I made the State All-Star game team. I believe school is important because it builds you as an individual just like basketball. Therefore, my commitment to school is the same as my commitment to basketball because without the schoolwork there is no basketball since I feel that the two work together.
Picture
Photography by David Williams Photography

How have you managed playing basketball while also being committed to your academics?
I have managed it because I always put my schoolwork first. I would do as much work as I could at school; then finish the rest at home before going to train or play basketball. If I had practice right after school, my first priority was to make sure that I completed any schoolwork after I made it home.

How have you become an inspiration to others in your community through your dedication to basketball and school?
I have become an inspiration for others in my community because they see how hard I have worked towards my dedication to basketball and school. When I accomplish something, it inspires me and others in the community because it shows that hard work pays off in the end. It takes dedication, a good work ethic to push yourself; and it’s not just with sports it is with anything you do in life to accomplish your dreams and goals.

How close are you with your family and friends and what do you enjoy doing most to spend time with them?

I am very close with my family and friends, and I like to go eat out with them while just talk about things or play games with them. I also enjoy watching movies with them. I mostly just like spending time with them when we are only hanging out, talking, laughing without actually doing anything or going anywhere.

Cash Lane - California
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination & Photography by Nicole Lane
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: At the tender age of 13, Cash Lane is already living his best life. Having graced the stages of some iconic places such as The Viper Room and The Rainbow on Hollywood’s Sunset strip, sitting in with adult, touring musicians, all while holding his own on his bass guitar. His band, Youthanize, was recently complemented and scouted by America’s  Got Talent. Having played shows with an audience full of the music industry’s heavy hitters is enough to leave any seasoned adult player feeling envious. Cash is just getting started and we can’t wait to see what his future holds!
Picture

What do you love most about music, and what is your favorite instrument to play?

The famous quote, “where words fail, music speaks” really resonates with me. Music is a way for me to express myself. Happy or sad, there’s always a song that will reflect my mood. I play drums and bass guitar, but bass is my instrument of choice.

Tell me about your band Youthanize and the opportunities you have received like playing in The Viper Room on Hollywood’s Sunset strip.
Youthanize is a band from ages 10-14 years old. We play rock and roll covers. We are mentored by my dad, Corey Lane and our keyboard player’s dad, Jason Freese. They are both in the music industry and through them, we have had some amazing opportunities. Sometimes they help us get our foot in the door, but our playing has to speak for itself. Getting to play on the Sunset strip was definitely on my bucket list. Getting to do it multiple times has been really cool.

What has been your favorite memory of being a part of your band so far, and how has music opened the door for new experiences in your life?
I have so many great memories from being a part of my band. We all get along so well, and we will definitely be friends for a very long time as we navigate this business.
I’d have to say that my favorite show was getting to play with a band called Rothchild. It’s a project that Brooks Wackerman (drummer for Avenged Sevenfold) put together with some of the guys from Tenacious D. There were so many amazingly talented musicians in the audience that night. I felt extremely fortunate that I had that opportunity at only 13 yrs old. As for new experiences, one show just seems to lead to another.
Picture
Can you tell me about the importance of work ethic that’s come into play through your music experience so far, and what it has taught you from being hired by places that are adult establishments?
Work ethic is something I learned early on. Why would they hire a kid to play if it comes with headaches when they can just hire an adult? I show up early, ready to perform. I do my job. I know it’s not time to play around.

How has your passion for music encouraged you to stay true to yourself throughout your life?
Music is something I’ve been around since day one. Throughout elementary school, most of my peers were into sports. I gave it a try. It definitely was NOT my thing. While most of my friends were at baseball practice, I was in music lessons. Friends would come over and the first thing they wanted to do was bang on my drums. It taught me that it was cool to be different. Now, I realize I want to stand out and not blend in.

Picture

What advice would you give to other teens that would help encourage them to continue to pursue their dreams even if they stand out amongst the rest?
I would tell them something great always comes out of doing what you love. When you stand out or are different, it helps people remember you. You leave a mark and that’s a good thing.
If someone really wants something, I’d tell them to not give up. Practice, practice and practice some more. When you’re ready, find others with your same goals, and start jamming with them. But most importantly, never stop learning.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I hope to be a bass player who’s a true contender in the game. My dream would be to play music full time. I would love to be able to have my bass guitar take me around the world.

Kristen Lee - Wisconsin
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Candid Touch Photography and Design
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kristen Lee is an old soul with a passion for adventure. Not only is she beautiful on the outside but her heart and compassion for those around her is inspiring. She is family oriented, loves softball, enjoys music and concerts, and is artistic. From one creative to another, I know she will make the world an even more beautiful place with her unique perspective.

What are some of your goals that you have for you future that involve cosmetology?
I would love to eventually work on the sets of movies or TV shows and do the makeup for the actors/actresses. I am currently enrolled in an online cosmetology course as well as a bridal makeup course to learn the basics and history of cosmetology. After earning my Associates Degree in Applied Science, with an emphasis on Business Administration/Entrepreneurship, I plan to attend Make-Up Designory in Burbank, California to broaden my make up artistry skills and study Special FX.

What is your favorite thing about makeup and what inspired you to want to pursue cosmetology?
I love that makeup can be whatever you want it to be. There are so many different styles to choose from, such as Special FX, everyday looks, dramatic, colorful, film, etc. Since middle school I've experimented with makeup, most of the time it didn't go so well now that I look back, but that was when I started getting some makeup kits for Christmas and my birthday. High school was when I really learned different techniques and styles of makeup and started my already enormous collection of eye shadow pallets, brushes and lipstick. It's really given me a way to relax and escape when life gets stressful, as we all know it does. I think that's why I've become so passionate about learning the art of makeup, because I genuinely enjoy doing it, which is the most important thing to me when I think about my future career.

Picture

Why did you want to get into film and special fx makeup?
My entire life I have been a movie fanatic. Originally, my plan after high school was to attend a film school in Albuquerque, New Mexico to study cinematography and possibly become a director. As I made my way through senior year, I slowly realized that I wasn't as passionate about cinematography as I used to be, which caused a bit of panic. Then, I remembered how much I loved just sitting at my vanity and doing my makeup just because. I started to really look into the idea of makeup artistry and learned how many different paths you can take. I didn't want to cut out film entirely, so that's how film and Special FX makeup came up on my radar.

What is a difference between that type of makeup and runway or dance makeup?
Special FX, runway and dance makeup are all fairly dramatic styles of makeup because all are put under harsh lighting, so you have to be able to see it through the camera or from the crowd. Special FX, however, is where you see your zombies, aliens and fake injuries that require latex to shape whatever feature you want to add or alter.

I  know that you were involved in cross country, what is one lesson you have learned from the sport, and how did you overcome the tough times and injury that were brought to you from the sport?
The biggest lesson I learned from cross country was that we really need to be thankful every day for the things we're able to do. Not everyone is able to go out and run or even do everyday activities that most of us don't even think about. We need to take advantage of the opportunities that are given to us, no matter how scary or intimidating it seems, because someone else out there may be wishing they were able to do the same. With my injury, I tried to take advantage of the situation and became a manager. This allowed me to make friends with a few people I hardly ever saw or interacted with outside of practices. It also made me appreciate everyone who works so hard behind the scenes of all sports and events/productions to bring it all together.

Picture
Photography by Candid Touch Photography and Design
What was your role as the cross country manager?
The best thing about being a manager for cross country is that you get to see how much hard work really goes into putting a team together. From the coaches to the athletes, it takes a lot more behind the scenes work to make everything happen. My role as one of the managers was to take everyone's time as they made it to the mile mark as well as recording their finishing time. On the bus ride home, we would transfer the numbers from the sheets onto our coach's computer. When the race started, we were also in charge of starting the clock at the one and two mile marks so the runners were able to see their times. At some races and practices, I would also take pictures of the team so they could be hung in the hallway outside our coach's classroom. One thing I will never forget about being part of the Platteville cross country team is how so many people, from all different friend group and backgrounds could come together for one shared passion and support each other.

McKenna Todd - Idaho
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Ashlee King
Photography by The Brink Studio
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: McKenna Todd is smart and talented. She is on the National Honor Society for grades and played varsity all 4 years in soccer and softball. She is also the captain of both teams. She signed with Treasure Valley Community College on an athletic and an academic scholarship.
McKenna has a nephew and a cousin born with disabilities. They inspired McKenna’s senior project. She made and donated boxes full of things for mothers who had a baby with a disability or passed away. McKenna is inspiring because in an ugly world, she manages to have a beautiful and giving heart.
Picture
Delivery day for my senior project.

What is Blessed by Wes, and what does the project involve? Yell me everything about it!
Blessed by Wes is my senior project. I chose to make twenty boxes full of items to help families in hospitals that are dealing with infant loss or just had a baby born with a disability. Ten of the boxes were for those that lost a baby and the other ten were for the families that had a baby born with a disability. These boxes had a blanket and beanie, a bracelet, a bag full of spa items for the mother such as a face mask, gum, nail polish, and other things. There were poems, a journal and pen, and even gift cards to Chick Fil A. We also filled an extra bucket full of blankets of different sizes and another bucket full of toys for siblings and other items. I donated my project to St. Luke’s Hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho on November 27, 2019. I presented my project to the Labor and Delivery department. It was such a special day for me, my family, and everyone else that was involved.

What inspired you to start Blessed by Wes as your senior project? Why did you choose it?
My family has been blessed by two different forms of trisomy. My cousin Berlyn was born eight years ago with Down Syndrome. She has been a light in my family's life since the day she was born. A few years later, my nephew, Weston Graver, was born on November 27, 2018 and had Trisomy 18. He only lived for four short hours before he passed away peacefully. Both my nephew and my cousin inspired my project. When my sister was in the hospital, she had received a care package that had helped bring her peace and comfort through this hard time. I thought the care package was such a great idea and I wanted to do this for families in Twin Falls that are experiencing this.

Why did you choose occupational therapy as your future career?
I chose Occupational Therapy as my future career because I love being around people that have disabilities. I’ve always wanted to be able to help and teach them in any way that I can.
Picture

What is one lesson that playing sports has taught you?
Sports have taught me many things. Softball taught me to quickly grow and bounce back from failure. It taught me that everyone will make mistakes and that nobody is perfect. Softball taught me how to grow from failure and to become a better person. You only fail when you stop trying.

Picture
Photography by Gavin Vanderbeek

You told me that many people call you a 'quiet leader' and 'lead by example' what is an obstacle or challenge that you had to help your soccer or softball team overcome?
I always try to be a team player. If one of my teammates has to run extra, I will run with them. I try to always be the first one on the field in between innings. I always run to my position or if the coach calls us in, I hustle over to her. If I get taken out of the game I still cheer for my team because that’s my job. I try to encourage my team and have a positive attitude. There’s not one specific obstacle that I have helped them overcome. I try to put the team first and work hard and hope that I can teach them something from the way I play.

Eva Miller – Alabama
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by JPHowardphotography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Never without a musical instrument, paintbrush, pen, or book of poetry Eva Miller embodies the term artist. Since a young age Eva has loved music, art, and words. However, what sets this talented girl apart from other fine art lovers is her dedication to work at becoming excellent in her craft. Practice, practice, and practice some more. Since Eva began violin at the age of 5, she has won numerous state competitions and even placed Nationally. Besides winning competitions, Eva shares her talents with her church family on Sundays, travels to other churches in the state of Alabama, and most recently traveled to St. Kitts to lead worship for Global Missions. Not only does she play the violin, she is a gifted vocalist, winning state competitions, performing in churches, local venues, musicals, and University of Alabama games. She also plays the clarinet, piano, and mandolin. If she is not singing or playing, Eva is drawing- on anything and everything. A gifted visual artist, Eva has won several state and national competitions with her unique artwork. All these talents are wonderful, but the best thing about Eva is her zeal for life. She happily shares her art with anyone, whether helping her three sisters with art projects, teaching beginning violinists, or tromping through the woods reciting poetry and filming movies. A true artist in spirit and talent, Eva inspires beauty and love for life to all around her.

Tell us about your interests in music and art.
Music has been a part of me since I began violin lessons at 6 and a part of my family since my grandfather started a band in the 70s. I received musical training from family members as well as professional teachers. I was once told that “a musician must hear; an artist must see.” However, I would add that it's not enough to listen to lilting melodies or see beautiful landscapes, a musician must become a part of the notes with their instrument; an artist must become a part of the landscape through their art. Music and art are beautiful because they are skills that I can carry with me through my entire life.

What do you think music and art can do for a person?
I am in a 40s acapella band, and every time we sing for our audiences, primarily senior citizens and veterans, the power of music becomes most evident to me. My favorite memory is singing in a nursing home when a man in a wheelchair stood up and began dancing with me. He stayed after the performance to tell us his story of swing dancing. It was incredible. Bringing joyfulness, sorrowful memories, and hopeful tears to faces that hear it, music affects every person. Music holds a universal bond and language with people that requires no words. Everyone understands. Music has the ability to change people, bring hope or sadness, and unite people around the world. It is powerful, and we can be part of it.

When you began to dislike practicing, how did you train your mind to get back on track?
Practicing will always be a struggle for me. However, I realized that the struggle is what makes it a greater accomplishment when you complete the task. Without challenges, there would be no growth. So, although the struggle may never fully leave, pushing yourself to practice becomes easier when you understand the reward. Don’t give up. It will be difficult, but the difficulties are what create breakthroughs. Find something that inspires you and keep going!

What do you plan on doing with music and art in the future?
After graduating college with a degree in violin and art, I hope to bring what I've learned back to Alabama and start a Fine Arts studio dedicated to excellence and devoted to students. I want to create a place for students to follow the arts as a career while thriving and learning at professional levels. I believe that giving children the opportunity to excel in the arts will be beneficial to the generation ahead and the state of Alabama.

If you could describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be and why?
I describe myself as competitive, creative, and content. I like to win, and I feel like the pieces of music I play or the pictures I draw are challenges to overcome. Creativity has always been in my life. I think it's interesting to see how far one can go to portray an idea or theme with art. Contentment comes from realizing how much God gives me: family, friends, and opportunities. I know that God will continue leading me through life, and I am excited to follow what he has in store for my future.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love playing basketball, especially with my sister and dad. I also love reading and writing poetry.

Picture

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I sell customized shoes when I have time to spend painting at home. I love painting Air force 1s!

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to have a piece of poetry published, start a small side business for customizing shoes, and learn how to swing dance more.

Who do you find inspiring?
Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, both of my grandparents, and my Aunt Julie

The Nomination: David is such an inspiring young man and his passion for football is incredible. Dave shows that with hard work and preservation that you can be anything your heart desires. David's dream was to be a Louisa High Lion since he was in Elementary school. Neither parent knew anything about football but that didn’t stop David from talking his dad into signing him up for little league football. He practiced hard and diligently. Unfortunately, David rarely got to play but that did not stop him. He cheered and encouraged his teammates just the same. He tried out for Middle school football and did not make it. David became a Louisa Lion but still no play time. Every coach kept saying David had heart and they regretted not playing him more. He practices even harder until finally he got his chance to play. David started both varsity years and was top in his region, district, and position. David accomplish his dream while being an honor roll student all 12 years, taking college classes and becoming a member of the honors society. David has a new dream of going to college, becoming a GM of a NFL team and persuading his football career.

Tell us about how you became interested in playing football. Did anyone inspire you?

As a child, I never wanted to play sports. I never possessed the passion and love for the game. One of my childhood friends actually introduced me to football and we would play in his backyard. When I was eight, I decided that I would join little league with him. However, it wasn’t until I was in middle school that I fell in love with the game.

When you did not get playing time, how did you stay positive and not let it upset you?
I always knew there was a plan for me. My parents always told me that if I do the right things and I work hard that good things will happen. So, I stayed positive and worked hard on and off the field. In the end, it all worked out for me.

What are some of your favorite positions to play? Why?
I am an offensive lineman. This is one of my favorite positions because they have to work the hardest. Without an offensive line, the team's offense would fail. We create the best bonds with each other as well as with the quarterback and running backs. We may not get all the publicity, but it’s great being able to rely on each other on and off the field.

Other than football, what else are you interested in and like to spend time doing?
On weekends, my Dad and I take trips to the drag strip. I like being around the cars and helping him compete against the other racers. I also like spending time with my family and friends. Whether it’s going out or celebrating at home it’s always a fun time.

What are some ways you have helped or volunteered in your community?
I have participated in Santa Council, which helps give food to those in need during the holidays. I have also helped advertise and transport toys to those in need for the local toy drive and helped to promote Stuff the Bus for students in need of school supplies. I have also mentored at football camps for younger children.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Even when I was in little league I did not see much playing time until my last year. Then, again, in middle school I sat the bench. Even on junior varsity I would stand on the sidelines and watch the game. When I became a varsity player, I knew I had to step up my game even more. I worked out at home and after school. I went to camps and combines to get coaching points from multiple views. I studied the best players at my position. I would even watch coaching tutorials on YouTube and highlights of hall of fame offensive tackles. When I was thrown in with the starters, I seized my opportunity. The next day, at open house, my coach told me I was going to be the starter. I went on to get All-District and All-Region honors and maintained a 4.1 GPA. After my senior year, I was finally granted a scholarship; however, I did not accept the offer because I didn’t feel the place was the right fit for me.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to never give up. It takes hard work and dedication but if you want something bad enough then you should never give up on it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I see myself fresh out of college on an internship with an NFL team. I hope to one day become the general manager and build a super bowl caliber team. That is if I’m not on the team.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
When I earned the starting job, I doubted my abilities. I didn’t feel like I was good enough. A senior on the team inspired me and made me realize my true potential. He was a shorter guy, but he proved himself as one of the best in our district. He mentored me and helped me grow into the player I am today.

What inspired you to want to get involved in 4-H?

I attended as a young camper and loved it. I attended each year for 5 years as a camper and really looked up to the teen counselors and decided I wanted to be one, and applied, interviewed and was chosen. 2020 will be my 9th year as a part of 4-H, and my 4th time as a teen counselor. I was chosen as “Counselor of the Year” in 2018 and 2019.

Tell me about 4-H and what you do in it.
4-H is a youth organization where we reach youth and help them reach their full potential. We host a week-long sleep away camp where kids between 8 and 13 attend and choose different activities such as fishing, kayaking, outdoor survivor cooking, archery, swimming, crafts, etc. Teen counselors oversee these activities.

Why did you get involved in showchoir?

I was part of a company dance team for 3 years between the ages of 8 and 10. I decided to take a break from dance in middle school to pursue playing basketball. I played for 5 years, but once I was a sophomore in high school, I decided to audition for our showchoir and get back into dance this way.

Tell me more about what show choir is and what you do.
Our show choir is a mixed chorus that competes at various in and out of state competitions. Our group is called Capital Swing and we were the first high school show choir in the greater Richmond area.

What are your responsibilities as dance captain?
As a dance captain, it is my job to learn all choreography and be able to teach it to my peers. I also keep the group on track at rehearsals and competitions

What was your reaction when you won most outstanding performer? Were you expecting it or was it a total surprise?
I was totally surprised when I heard my name announced. I felt that I was in the running based on comments from friends, teachers and competitors who watched the performance, but I was thrilled and grateful to be recognized and to represent Manchester High School and Capital Swing

Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Rose Davies strives daily to accomplish her dreams, whether it's playing soccer as a 4 year starter or leading or FFA chapter as president or chasing banners in the livestock show ring, she does it with intensity, passion and integrity. It is this that has led her to traveling all over the country representing agriculture. She has her own business for which she raises and sells show lambs and will be attending Blackhawk College to pursue a degree in agriculture business and looking at law following.

What do you love most about being involved in agriculture your whole life, and how it has also led you to become so active in FFA?
Agriculture has always been a staple in our family growing up. I became extremely active in 4H and FFA over the past eight years, I started showing nationally and ran for FFA Office. My parents, 4H leaders, and mentors always drove me to do whatever I dreamed of, I then made the decision to dive into FFA and showing my livestock.

Tell me about your experiences of traveling all over the country to represent agriculture.
These past eight years I have travelled to many different states, meeting new people and finding new experiences. One of my favorite shows is the Northern International Livestock Exposition, in Billings, Montana. This show takes place in early October, I have met my best friends at this show and have had extreme success here. The show circuit takes place all spring, summer and then the national show circuit starts with NILE and ends in Denver in January.

What impact does the youth have on agriculture and building their communities through it?

Agriculture is an essential part of the world's future, with youth becoming involved more it shows the potential of our future. Showing livestock helps drive the prospects of the commercial livestock industry, but it also shows how the agriculture industry in crops.

How has your love for agriculture led you to attend Blackhawk College while also pursuing a degree in agriculture business?
Showing nationally allows you to meet tons of people, which is when I heard about Blackhawk. This school has an outstanding agricultural business program and a full vet tech program. This was my dream school, it made it even easier to say yes when I was given the opportunity to judge livestock collegiately.

What are some ways you can inspire other teens to become active in their communities to improve the environment of our country?
As a high school student, life was always pushed to improve your transcript and resumes for colleges. While it is our future, it is also your high school experiences. Getting involved in your individual communities can be easy, do something you love, but that doesn't just help you. Join your local FFA chapter and get active, volunteer to tutor students in your school district, or pick up trash around town.

Can you tell me more about your passion for soccer, and how it has also led you to being a 4 year starter?
My career in soccer started when I was five years old. My parents were both extremely active through life and both played a variety of sports, so what do I do? Choose the one sport they never played of course. I went from rec, to club, to school ball and have so many memories on and off the field, of course every athlete eventually has an injury and mine came in the middle of my senior year when I tore my acl. I had gone from four year starter to on the bench cheering on my team, I postponed surgery for two months, and continued showing to pursue my dreams.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To the show kid sitting at home reading this, Keep working, no matter what, always believe in what you are doing. I know that it can be difficult when your parents say you can't go out with friends because you have to wash your animals or clean pens or catch up on school work because you missed some for a show. Remember that this is to achieve your goals. Keep pushing yourself, your village is behind you!

Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Bailey Weber is showing what it means to live to your full potential. She cares deeply about family and classmates. She represents her class as student council vice-president, JAG president and FBLA secretary. She visited Washington, DC where she gave a speech at the national JAG convention. Bailey was on the homecoming court and tennis team.  She is on yearbook staff and her school's announcement channel. Bailey is active outside of school where she works part-time and helps with local community activities. While doing all of this, Bailey has completed 31 college credit hours. Bailey truly is inspiring!

What do you love most about volunteering in your community to help others?
Doing various activities while volunteering within my community, is something I have always enjoyed because it gives me a great feeling of personal satisfaction knowing that I am doing my part to make my community a better place, while providing me with a sense of connection. I have volunteered for the Math Mania Club at the Middle School where I tutor and participate in group math games to help with math academic intervention. Annually, I have participated in our community Powder Puff football game that raises money for breast cancer awareness. One that is extremely important to me on a more intimate level is the ALS Walk, as I have a close friend that has personally suffered a great deal from this debilitating disease.

Tell me a little bit about how you are actively involved in your class through different positions you have taken on, including student council vice-president, and what experiences have you received from being so involved in your school and your community?
I have taken very deliberate steps to ensure that I was an active member of my class, in order to be the voice for my class to the decision-makers within our school system. Being able to speak to the administrators to advocate for changes, was not only challenging and difficult for an introvert like me, but a major stepping-stone in my personal endeavor to try something that is out of my comfort zone daily. Having to give a speech in Washington, D.C. is when I realized how important it was for me to overcome my fear of public speaking. This was an honor for me to have been chosen; therefore, it was something that I could not turn down which meant that I had to conquer my public speaking fears. This was one of the most challenging experiences of my life; however, without struggles, one cannot grow as a person.

How have you managed all of your responsibilities with school and volunteering, while also completing 31 college credit hours along with it?
Juggling the multitude of responsibilities that are involved in the trifecta of doing college course work, normal high-school curriculum and volunteering activities within my community is and continues to be a daily struggle to maintain a sense of balance. Time-management is an important factor in maintaining this balance; and, I feel that it is also a vital factor for future success, academically and socially/emotionally, thereby making this a lesson learned that will only facilitate positive future experiences.

Can you tell me more about the food program you worked for during the summer, and what you enjoyed most about it? How can your story inspire others to become actively involved in their communities just like you in order to make the world a better place?
Amidst this pandemic time, our community is doing their part to feed the children that rely on the school for their daily meals. Annually, we have a summer food program that feeds anyone that is 18 years of age or younger, but this year with the events surrounding the covid-19 virus we were luckily able to begin the program in March. A personal benefit and something that I look forward to each day in working this program, is getting to see the joyous looks on the kids’ faces every day when they come to get their meals. Working with the program allows me to see the importance of helping those that may not have the means to provide for their families in times of crisis. My hope is that this experience will serve as a catalyst for others to pay it forward.

Isabelle Fortiz -Virginia
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination by Rachel Fortiz
Photography by Melissa Waller Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Isabelle Fortiz is an IB student and is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. She is a peer tutor in math and chemistry. She was on the Varsity swim team all 4 years of high school and was voted captain her senior year. Isabelle also plays the violin and has performed with the Rappahanock Youth Symphony Orchestra and for her high school’s Chamber Symphonia. Isabelle has certifications in American Red Cross, lifeguarding, and Water Safety Instruction. She is currently a junior assistant coach for the Rappahanock Area Stingrays.

Photography by Melissa Waller Photography

Tell us about your experiences swimming. Where did you swim before high school?

I started swim lessons through Stafford County when I was 4 years old, where I developed a love for being in the water. I was introduced to meets and teamwork while swimming for a summer swim team, the Aquia Harbor Dolphins, from ages 9 to 12. When I was 12, I also decided to start swimming year-round with STAT to gain experience swimming in a more competitive environment. The following year, I joined the Massad Marlins for summer swim and switched to the Stingrays for year-round swimming. I swam with the Marlins for 3 years, until joining the Hampton Oaks Hurricanes, where I currently swim and coach. I continued swimming with the Rays for 4 years until deciding that coaching was my passion.

What is something not everyone knows about swimming?
Something that not everyone knows about swimming is that it is very much a mental exercise as much as it is physical. Swimming requires a great amount of physical strength and endurance while using many different muscles. However, I find myself testing my mental toughness in long, grueling practices and while pushing myself to be my best during practices. I think it’s especially noticeable during meets and races. We’re all very dedicated to this sport, putting in the hours and the laps needed to reach our goals, so it becomes a matter of how hard and far we’re willing to push ourselves.
Picture

What was it like transitioning from a swimmer to a swim coach? How is it different being on the "other" side? -> (The coaching side)
Ending junior year, I decided that swimming in college was not something that I saw myself doing in my future. I realized that I didn’t want to step away from the pool completely, so I reached out to my Rays coaches about coaching the developmental group (10&U). The transition from swimmer to swim coach was simple because I started coaching at the start of the following season and I am still close with my teammates and coaches. As a coach, I have a greater appreciation for my coaches, teachers, and mentors, as well as a better understanding of the work they put in for my peers and I.

Tell us about your own service project, The Big Box Project. What is it? How did it start? What are you hoping to accomplish with it?
I created The Big Box Project in December 2018 to collect toiletries and non-perishable food donations to donate to Empowerhouse, a shelter for survivors of domestic violence and abuse located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The project was designed to run for exactly one month as part of my Creativity-Action-Service “CAS” Project as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. I wanted to combine my swim, school, and social community to help give back to those in need

Picture
Photography by Rachel Fortiz
What does it mean to inspire others? How are you able to do that?
To inspire others means to positively influence by setting an example of how to be motivated to work for a goal or to achieve something by having a strong work ethic. Beyond swimming, I am a full IB Diploma Programme student and a violinist in my school’s higher-level Chamber Sinfonia orchestra. I am a part of a senior class that showed the underclassmen that it was possible to do extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports as an IB student, as I will be graduating in the top 10% of my class.

Alexis Butler - Arkansas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Lori Hutton
Photography by Whitney Vassar Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Alexis Butler has served in Student Council and other leadership roles all throughout her school years: president of Beta, officer for science club, officer in FBLA, student council member, student tutor, chief editor of the yearbook and school paper, and volunteer for the community garden and several other school projects including blood drives and backpack projects. She will be valedictorian of her class this year and has already received the Scholars scholarship to A-State thanks to her 4.13 GPA and 32 on her ACT. She is always willing to motivate others and encourage her friends and fellow students. I love that she steps up to encourage those that do not have confidence! She is truly an inspiration!

What volunteer project has been your favorite and means the most to you? Why?
For the past two years, I have tutored elementary aged students. During elementary school, I always looked up to older students. The older students served as some of my biggest role models and made me feel comfortable at school. To know I can have the same effect on young kids makes me so happy. I also love the fact that just maybe those kids that I tutor might learn to love school and learning as much as I do.

Tell me more about volunteering at your local hospital, what is that like?
Last year, I served as a patient ambassador on the pediatric floor of the hospital. I helped the nurses by passing out ice, answering calls, and aiding in bathing the babies. I even got to shadow the nurses and doctors some nights. I am forever grateful for the experience. By interacting with many patients every day, I improved my communication skills. I also have a newfound respect for those who work in healthcare. I love helping others, so interacting with parents and babies was amazing.

What academic achievement are you most proud of? Why?
I am most proud of my ACT score. I have always worked hard to do good on the ACT, and it has always been a goal of mine to get over a 30. When I got a 32 my junior year, I felt like all my hard work paid off. I took the ACT four times: once in 7th grade, once in 10th grade, and then twice my junior year (and one of those was the free ACT for juniors).

What is one goal that you have for your future?

My biggest goal is to be accepted into law school. By becoming a lawyer, I have the power to help and empower others. I have always lived by the concept of leaving this world better than I found it!
Picture

What advice would you give someone to motivate them to have more confidence?
My biggest piece of advice is to surround yourself with people who make you happy. I have one of the best support systems. The people in my life have pushed me to be the best version of myself. When you are surrounded by encouraging people, you encourage others! Being encouraged and encouraging others can make you feel so confident.

Olivia Aguzzi - Illinois
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Faith Aguzzi
Photography by Veronica Adams Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I am nominating Olivia because what first started out as a hobby in playing with make-up & art in junior high has turned into a successful learning experience as the ‘make-up chick’ for her high school theater department to having artwork presented & placing at Conference. Olivia has led to teach other students about theater makeup to prepare them for productions & to take over after she graduates. Proud to also state that she got accepted into DePaul University’s BFA-Wig, Make Up & Technology Program & will start Fall 2020!! Follow your passion!!

Picture
Photography by Veronica Adams Photography

Do you remember when you first discovered makeup? How old were you?
I was about 10 years old when I first discovered makeup. My parents and I were scrolling through TV channels when we stumbled upon a show called Face Off. It was a special effects makeup show where 10 artists would compete through a series of challenges and create extravagant makeup and costume designs. I immediately fell in love with it. I would create my own designs, on paper or doing makeup on myself, based on the challenges of every episode.

Tell us about the evolution of your makeup - where you first started to where you are now.
I first started using my mom’s makeup to create different looks that I saw on Face Off or from YouTube videos. I kept practicing with more materials that I’d receive as gifts or from my parents, fueling my passion for special effects. Once I hit high school, my love and passion for art and special effects sky-rocketed. I’ve taken art classes since freshman year, have been a member of the National Arts Honor Society and I’m currently the President. I’ve learned many different techniques in painting, drawing and sculpting, and how it went hand-in-hand with special effects. I’m also Head of the makeup department for my school’s theatre program. I’ll be starting college at DePaul University’s Conservatory, BFA- Wig, Makeup & Technology program.
Picture
Photography by Veronica Adams Photography
What is it like being the head of your makeup team for the theatre department?
Being head of makeup for my high school’s theatre program is a blast, but definitely a challenge. We would have approx. 1 class per month that is open to everybody to teach the basics of stage makeup. Then, in the weeks leading up to opening night, I’d lead classes for the makeup people to teach them how to do specific looks; bruising, fantasy, stage makeup for the boys, and anything special. I would oversee around 5 makeup people guiding and directing them on how to do different character makeups for the different shows.

How difficult or easy was it learning how to face paint with your makeup background?
It was a challenge to learn how to face-paint on other people. But, through my background of being in painting classes and the makeup department in school and doing special effects on myself, helped me with the foundation to learn new skills for my business. I have also practiced on my parents and my friends to help get over a fear of working on someone else’s face.

What is it like being on a badminton team? My high school does not have a badminton team so I would love to hear about it!
Being on a badminton team is so much fun! But competitive badminton is not the same as backyard badminton. It’s so fast-paced and hard on our bodies to where I tore a ligament in my ankle playing. I have been on my school’s team since freshman year and I have made so many friends over 4 years. I’ve made amazing memories playing on my team through bonding and becoming a family. I became a varsity player during my sophomore year, and I became a Captain my senior year. Sadly, my senior season was over before it started due to the heart-breaking pandemic occurring currently, but my coaches are keeping tabs on every-one through Zoom calls and group text messages.

Anna Milligan - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Janey Cooper Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Anna Milligan is one of the most talented, determined, and focused Senior girls I have had the opportunity to photograph! She has so many facets to her musical talent and shares her gift over the church, while serving in the worship band. She had specific requests for her senior session to capture not only her praise music, but also her love for writing music, and the fun, punk and edgy side! What a gift it was for me to be serenaded by her beautiful voice while she sang her heart out during her session with me. Her beauty on the exterior is obvious, but she has a genuine heart for serving others and a perseverance that leaves you certain she will be successful in her chosen path.
Picture
Photography by Janey Cooper Photography

What/ who inspired you to want to get into music? Why?
My family has a long legacy of musicians. My father was a worship leader at our local church for over twenty years. I grew up watching him sing and play guitar. He has always been my biggest inspiration. When I turned thirteen, I asked my dad if I could sing with him on stage. And from that day on he started training me to be the singer I am today! I have my entire family to thank otherwise I wouldn't be where I am today.
Picture

What type of music do you like to write/ perform?
My favorite music to sing would be Christian music. I am a worship leader at my local church just like my father was, and I have the opportunity every Sunday and Wednesday to glorify the Lord with the beautiful gift that he gave me. I don't like to think of it as a performance. It's an opportunity to lead God's people into his presence. I also love alternative/Indie music I will admit I do have a bit of a punk rock side:)
Picture
Photography by Janey Cooper Photography

How did you get started writing music?

I got started writing music when I was about fifteen years old. The first song I ever wrote was called "Heart Cry" It’s a song about laying out all of myself before the lord. I believe we all have a heart cry when it comes to music. That song came out of pure surrender and love for the lord. and the holy spirit laid the words on my heart.

What performance has been your favorite? Why?
My favorite performance would be the time that my Dad Andy, Aunt Lana, Cousin Kallie, and I sang "Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel" at Christmas time during our Christmas Eve service at our local church. it was just so cool having all the generations of family up there singing together glorifying the lord.

Picture
Photography by Janey Cooper Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing music and singing?
It always seems like you're stuck, and you're getting nowhere. But don't give up. Keep trying. Music is all about YOUR creative process. There is no wrong way to write music. Speak what is in your heart. Don't let anyone persuade you into writing something you do not believe in. Practice makes perfect. Sing every day, get involved in voice lessons, watch tutorials, find some musical friends, YOU GOT THIS!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years I see myself attending my dream college Visible Music college in Mckinney, Texas, learning all that I can about this amazing art. And hopefully I will get the opportunity to be signed with a record label and record some songs, and be able to be planted in a church and be involved in there worship team!
