Greta Graffius

6/16/2021

Picture

Greta Graffius - Ohio
Nomination by Kimberly Graffius
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Greta’s positive energy is contagious and inspiring. She’s graduating in June, 2021 from South Range High School in the top 10% with a GPA of 3.927. Greta plans to study Elementary Education at Baldwin Wallace University. During high school, Greta participated in music and athletic programs. Though, she spent most of her time volunteering through National Honor Society and Future Teachers of America where she tutored elementary students in their classrooms and art, cooking, and volleyball camps. Greta’s an excellent drummer and uses music to motivate younger children. The way she values education, diversity, and creativity are positively refreshing.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
My experiences with Jennifer Grace Studios, the positive message that she likes to spread, and the ways I have contributed to spreading positivity on social media.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have played volleyball year round for six years and have volunteered my time this past summer to help out our middle school coaches during practices. I was at every practice and also helped during middle school volleyball camps. I have been a drummer for eight years. I have not only put in the work to improve by taking private lessons every week for the past eight years but I have also put in the time to help others improve by teaching private lessons to those much younger than me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
I would talk about the prevalence of inequality and racism in schools and why as a society we need to make a change. A child attends school at a crucial part of their life where they are growing and developing and things such as sexism and racism from teachers or fellow students alter that development way too often. I have seen it happen first hand and I feel this is an important issue that is not discussed enough. The classroom is no place for sexism and racism.

Peyton Eanes

Peyton Eanes – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Delynn Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: It is with great honored that I recommend Peyton Eanes as strong candidate for your consideration. I am awed by Peyton's success – both by her academic and athletic achievements and how she demonstrates her love for others through service. Her progress through high school is most impressive including her academic achievements and her maintaining the highest GPA for three years. Her academic diligence is proof that she will be a trustworthy and competent candidate.
Peyton is hardworking, reliable, determined, responsible, invested, focused, and intelligent. She has strong values that she will not compromise. This has aided her development as a leader. Her leadership resume includes positions such student council president, varsity cheerleader, volleyball captain, sports camp coach, and preteen camp counselor. Peyton understands the importance of her education and firmly grasps the value of a community service and teamwork logging over hundreds of volunteer hours.
Peyton has excelled in school and in the community– it would take pages to list her successes. I have had the opportunity to interact with her on a regular basis and during this time, I have observed Peyton's leadership, her mature discernment, and her ability to thoughtfully verbalize complex concepts. I have also seen her apply these to her life.
She is most deserving of your consideration. I give her my highest recommendation as you seriously consider her as a strong candidate.

How have you achieved the highest GPA for three years at your school? What or who do you attribute your drive for academic excellence?
As a child, my parents pushed me to academic excellence. By instilling high scholastic standards in me at a young age, they helped me form good habits and make good grades. Achieving the highest GPA for my first three years of high school and, hopefully, my last year as well has not been easy. I have spent many hours studying when I wanted to be out with friends or watching Netflix, but I know it will all be worth it to get into the college of my dreams. Setting time aside every day to study is essential, but the main thing is not being too hard on yourself when you fail and try again next time.
Picture
Photography by Delynn Photography

You've had many leadership roles. Which is the most noteworthy/memorable, and why?

My most memorable and favorite leadership memory is being a summer camp counselor at Trinity Pines Baptist Encampment. For three summers in a row, I got to attend a pre-teen overnight camp and lead a group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade girls. It is my absolute favorite event of the summer because I get to teach these girls about the love of Christ and show them how to love and build each other up. We always spend hours talking, playing sand volleyball, swimming in the lake, and doing all the fun activities planned out for them. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my girls make everlasting memories and build lifelong friendships.

What do you think is one thing every great leader should do?
Listening to what the people around you are saying is probably the most important thing a leader can do. Without hearing what they think and adjusting how you lead to fit the group, you can never be an outstanding leader. Leading only by doing what you believe to be the best can lead to discontent followers and a weak work ethic. By listening to the people's opinions and suggestions and adapting the way you teach, you can become a great leader that inspires everyone they meet.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Study hard, have fun, relax every now and then, and enjoy life!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five year years, I plan to be finishing up my doctor of physical therapy and looking for a job. Hopefully, I will be able to start by working as a physical therapist at a major university such as the University of Texas at Austin and then work my way up to the NFL or NBA

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to go scuba diving, go on a road trip through every state, and look out over Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

The Nomination: Sophie Hamra is an inspiring team because she devotes herself to taking care of everybody else before she takes care of herself. If you get the opportunity to be interviewed, what would you most like to be interviewed about?

If I got the opportunity to be interviewed I would personally like to be interviewed about my passion for animals and how I pursue to dedicate my life to taking care of them.

What have you done to help animals and how did you get started?
I’ve grown up around animals, they’re all I really know. My mother and I were always the first to bring injured animals into our home and nurse them back to health. We’ve had animals from squirrels, to rabbits, to horses. It’s always been a life goal to make sure the lives that make me happiest are the healthiest.

Picture
Photography by Michelle Hamra

What about animals made you want to dedicate your life to them?
Animals live a very simple life compared to humans and our pet’s whole lifespan is a very short portion of ours. We are their happiness. Who wouldn’t want to make them as happy as possible?
What is your favorite kind of animal to care for? My favorite animal to take care of is rabbits. My mother has implanted the love of rabbits into my brain since I was a baby. I have taken in wild baby rabbits as well as domestic ones as pets. They are so intelligent and oh so cute!

How have you worked toward your goal of becoming a veterinarian?
I take a vet assistant class at my high school, as well as an SOE class where I can go and job shadow veterinarians in my area! At the end of the year, I can become a certified vet assistant. It’s such an amazing opportunity and I can’t wait to pursue my dreams ever further.

Picture
Photography by Amanda Zimmerman
Do you ever have fears when it comes to working with animals, if so how do you overcome them?
I try to put all of my fears to the side and worry about the animal before myself. Animals can sense fear, and it makes them anxious to present yourself in a fearful way towards them. I want to make animals comfortable with me, so they can ultimately trust me. It’s part of being an animal lover, truly.

What do you love about working with children where do you work with them?
I have been working with kids for years at church through many programs like Sunday School or Vacation Bible School, where I knew I was meant to mentor students and later find a career where children are a part of my life.  While growing up in Girl Scouts, I knew earning my Gold Award was a goal I wanted to achieve, so naturally incorporating the two essential parts of my life together was undoubtedly an easy solution for my award.  I worked in an elementary school setting up a mentoring program before the Covid-19 Virus disturbed the program.

What has been your favorite memory from working with kids? Why?
My best memory of working with a student is always the energy.  I cannot ever pick one memory that I love or is my favorite over another because I would be choosing a child over another, and I can't do that.  I enjoy working with all the students and kids I meet, and each time I help a student or have fun and play a game and see them smile, I know I am doing what I am supposed to do. Being able to make a kid smile, even when they are having a bad day, is the best feeling.

When did you find your passion for working with children? When and how did you know that you wanted to get a degree in bruising working with children?
Once I started High School, I was introduced to the medical pathway, and I knew I wanted to heal sick children.  I want to have my Doctorate in Nursing working specifically in the pediatric intensive care unit.

How long have you been modeling, and what do you love so much about it? What has been your favorite photoshoot?
I have not been modeling but a few months, but I have enjoyed these last few months.  It is such a release of energy and so freeing.  So far, my favorite photoshoot was in the sunflower field. I am so excited about everything my photographer has planned.  I love being with other models when we can, although we cannot be together like we could be.

How do you encourage your fellow models during shoots and how do you make the best of every shoot?
I like to let my model friends know how beautiful they are inside and out.  They are the kindest people with so many talents, and they know all have cool ideas with clothes and make-up.  I love talking to them and seeing their style in play during our different photoshoots.  I am just lucky to be a part of the team.  It is a special time in all of our lives, and it's our Senior Year during Covid-19, so we have to make it the best!

BluMoon Photography - Janet Roberson
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Shelby Carter is an outstanding young lady who has inner beauty as well as outer beauty. She has an outgoing spirit and works hard to keep her GPA high. She loves tennis, her friends and most importantly her family. Shelby received her CNA license her junior year of high school. She will graduate high school in 2021 with an associates degree and plans to pursue a career in the medical field.

What exciting plans do you have for your future, and what inspired you to pursue a career in the medical field?
My plans for the future are to go straight to college after highschool and start the nursing program. I plan to become an ear, nose, and throat doctor. I was inspired to pursue a career because I was always around my grandmother who is a Nurse Practitioner. I have been around medicine since a very young age and have always planned to be some sort of doctor.

Tell me about you receiving a CNA license your junior year of high school, and what your academics and extracurriculars mean to you.
I was extremely eager to complete my CNA certification as early in high school as possible. You have to take 3 classes and then complete clinicals and the state board exam in order to receive your certification. My academics and extracurricular are very important to me. I have always been one to love school and excel in it with ease. I started playing tennis in 6th grade and fell in love so I have been playing ever since.

Picture

How have you managed a full time job, school, playing tennis, and still having time to spend with your friends and family?
My schedule is all over the place I work night shift at our nursing home so when I get home I can spend time with family. I have to make plans to spend time with friends just whenever I am not working or with family. Our tennis coach has 2 separate practice sessions one at 5:30 in the morning for the kids who work so I always attended that practice and just had to take off on game days.

Who has inspired you in your life and helped you become the person you are today?
My grandparents have had a big impact on my life. I stayed with them for the majority of my younger years by choice. I love my grandparents with all my heart and they have done nothing but support me in all of my choices in life. They have shown me what is it like to have a good career and still be able to attain a healthy relationship with each other. I want to be able to have a successful career and start a family of my own one day and they have shown me the proper way to plan out my life.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in also, and how are you also active in your church?
I am involved in lots of school clubs and sport teams. I am currently in HOSA, FCCLA, BETA, and student council. All of these clubs require good leadership skills and a drive to help others. I am active in my church through my youth group. We go take a mission trip once a year and go to 3 conferences. I was planning to go on a trip to Puerto Rico in October but due to COVID-19 that trip was cancelled. We do lots of helping on the trips such as helping to build the local children, witnessing to people in the city and praying with them as well.

What piece of advice would you give to help inspire others through all that you are involved in in your community?
A piece of advice I would give other people is to never take anything for granted. You can spread awareness to any situation you want if you try hard enough and have a good team to help you do it. Do not judge others because you do not know their history and you do not know your future. Anything can go wrong at any second.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to give to someone who wants to be where I am today is to never give up on your goals. I never imagined being able to graduate with a college degree and a high school diploma all while working full time and playing sports. It is very hard but you have to have the right motivation in order to achieve your goals. Keep a positive mindset through all of the hard times in your life and never let situations get you down.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished has to be being able to graduate with my associates degree as well as my high school diploma. I done this by replacing as many of my high school classes with college courses to take place of them. I have taken extra classes most semesters and summer classes every year to get ahead.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years I see myself being close to finishing school. I also see myself trying to start a family around this time. In my opinion you should never think too hard about the future because you aren’t promised tomorrow so live everyday to the fullest.

3 Things on your bucket list: Skydiving, bungee jumping, travel the world

Who do you find inspiring?
A person that I find inspiring in the media is Amy Schumer. She uses her comedic attitude to bring attention to rape culture in America. She stands up for other women that have been through situations similar to hers and helps get them through hard times in their life through her comedy.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel like there is no right answer to this question because no one knows how you truly inspire others. I do believe that my drive for success in life has pushed more people in my life to try to achieve higher goals. My relationship with god is strong built and he helps to give me the words to say when I am speechless. My friends have always come to me for advice because they know I will try to help them in the best way I can.

Andrew Lewis

Picture

Andrew Lewis - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Ashley Bulanek
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Andrew Lewis is unlike any middle school student I have ever had the privilege of teaching. Andrew is smart, funny and kind. He has a heart of gold and would do anything in his power to help anyone out. Andrew is a honor roll student athlete, Boy Scout, school band member, and uil contestant. While his plate is full, he still will help babysit his younger brother, workout with his older brother and help numerous family members with any task or chore. It has been an honor teaching such a wonderful teen.

Your nomination mentioned you are an athlete, what sports do you play and what inspired you to start them?
I play Basketball and Baseball- it gives me an outlet from school, family, and the daily activities. I can always play when there is nothing else to do. I love to play ball with my friends and I find it easier to connect with people when we are shooting hoops.

How long have you been a Boy Scout and what is your favorite memory from being one?
I have been in scouts since the first grade. My favorite memory was the camping trip we took last summer. I had the opportunity to take an emergency prep class. It was awesome! I want to be able to help people and I learned so much in that class and at camp that will help me in times of need.

What does being a Uil contestant mean? Tell me more about this!
The UIL competition is a school skills challenge. I competed in the mathematics category and received first place out of all the schools that competed in my area. My dad did too when he was in high school (I am in middle school). He is an engineer and I kind of want to be an engineer too. I enjoy the competition plus it is another opportunity to hang out with my friends.

Picture
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography

How do you balance all of the activities you have going on in your life on top of being an honor roll student?
I believe that you have to work hard to play hard. So I put a lot of effort to knock out my work and get things done so that I can take advantage of hanging out with friends and family.

How has the pandemic impacted your activities that you do and how have you pushed through the change?
I use the extra time to practice more so that when I get the opportunity to be with my team mates and friends again, I will be able to make the most of the time. I have also spent more time online with friends. It’s not the same but it is better than nothing.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I ran the Houston chevron half marathon with my dad and brother this past January. We raised money for the lupus foundation on behalf of my mom who has lupus. I was ready to quit 2 miles in but my dad helped me focus on short interval goals and the reason for doing the race (my mom). All of a sudden we were at mile marker 12 and I knew we could get through it. It was very tough but glad we did it. It taught me more than just finishing a race.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today? Be yourself. Grow out your hair and live YOUR life. Be kind and respect and help others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
That will be my senior year in HS. Getting ready for college, making the most of my time with my friends, and finishing out in at least the top 5 graduates of my class.

Picture
Photography by Celia Lewis Photography

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I enjoy writing my own lyrics and I love listening to new music.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? Making music

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Know my priorities and stick to a plan.

3 Things on your bucket list.
Get into a good college. Play in a music concert (not school related). Learn to drive a real motorcycle

Who do you find inspiring? My dad

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I just focus on being a good person and the best son and friend that I can be. I find those around me to be inspiring.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Thank you to Mrs. Bulanek for nominating me and thank you to all who have voted for me. I truly feel like this is unreal.

Davis Cochran

 Davis Cochran - Oklahoma
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Amy Cochran
Photography by Brittany Stover Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Davis Cochran is a graduate of Norman High School in Norman, OK and a proud member of the Chickasaw Nation. Davis will be headed to Colorado School of Mines this Fall to study Mechanical Engineering. Davis enjoyed being a member of the Academic Team at NHS and earned an All State medal each year culminating with being named a member of the All-State team his senior year. Davis always take the time to be kind, from tutoring a friend in AP Calculus the entire school year to buying the milk for our church's food pantry each week.

What is the academic team that you were involved in at NHS, and how did it affect your high school career and what you want to accomplish in the future?
The academic team at Norman High School is a quiz bowl style competition team made up of students from 9th through 12th grades. Anyone can be on the team who has an interest in any of the topics that we compete with, such as: Math, Humanities, Science, History, etc. A senior member of the team approached me and invited me to come to a practice my freshman year. After seeing the practice, I decided that I want to join the team and I’ve been hooked ever since. Being on the academic team affected me in many ways. First, it was a great way to meet new people who I might not have met any other way. It also encouraged me to broaden my horizons in relation to what I chose to study and learn about. Lastly, the time spent practicing and competing with this group of people really bonded us together and we formed lasting friendships that I hold dear. I feel that my experiences with the academic team helped to shape what I want to study in college, which is Mechanical Engineering. It also really gave me confidence to push myself and apply to a school like Colorado School of Mines where I will be attending in the Fall.

What are some accomplishments you have achieved through being so involved in your academics throughout high school?
Being so heavily involved in my academics throughout high school really shaped me into who I am today. I accomplished many things during this time. Having good grades and a high GPA was one of my top goals and I was able to achieve that through a lot of hard work and perseverance. Also, I was named as a member of the National Honor Society for my entire high school career. As a member of the Chickasaw Nation, I’m also proud to have been named to the Oklahoma Native American Student Honor Society all four years as well. Both my freshman and sophomore years, I was named to the All State Froshmore Academic Team. That was a huge honor and I didn’t expect to get it my freshman year. I ended my senior year with being chosen as a member of the All State Academic Team. Being chosen for that really meant a lot to me. Additionally, I was named as an Oklahoma Academic Scholar. I have also been named as an AP Scholar with Distinction, which is nice because I really enjoyed all the AP classes I took in high school. I’m very thankful for the opportunities and awards I have been given through the past four years. Focusing on academics has been incredibly rewarding for me and led me to follow my passion for learning.

Tell me about the challenges you have faced through having ADHD, and the ways you have overcome them throughout school.
Although having ADHD can be quite challenging and makes school harder than it needs to be, it does not make school impossible. I was diagnosed with ADHD in the first grade, and that was the start of my journey with this disability. During my elementary years it was exceedingly difficult to find a medication that worked and develop coping mechanisms while dealing with the side effects of the medication. For the most part, I still did well academically, although I struggled with certain subjects from time to time. Socially, I began to separate from my peers because I was emotionally immature and hyperactive. In middle school, we were able to finally find a medication that would help me focus without the awful side effects like weight loss and depression. I feel that I was successful in middle school due to the right medication as well as getting the support of an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Having an IEP gave me the support of extra time to complete tests and take my tests in a quiet place. I worked hard and made a 4.0 GPA during all three years of middle school. My social life was a bit of a roller coaster, but I eventually found a group of friends that accepted me. During my four years of high school, I took many honors and AP courses which was quite a challenge for someone with ADHD. I quickly found out it wasn’t as easy to make A’s as it was in middle school. I was fortunate to have some amazing teachers who became mentors to me, and it made all the difference in the world to have that type of support. My Chemistry teacher was also my academic team coach and Mr. Powell took me under his wing right off from my freshman year. He really challenged me academically and socially. I also had a wonderful Physics teacher who also coached the Robotics team, Mr. Askey. He also really took the time to get to know me and provide a safe place for me to grow. I will say that high school can be a difficult place for those with disabilities, but with the support of great teachers it makes the whole experience so much better.

How have you given back to your community through your church or your school?

I have enjoyed giving back to my community by being involved in my church youth group. My youth group regularly volunteers at various food banks. I started volunteering my time in middle school and quickly realized how rewarding it is to feel like you are making a difference and really helping others. I went on several mission trips out of our state, but the only local trip was to a small town after a large wildfire. We went there for three days and we repaired trailer homes that had been damaged by the fires. It really made me feel good to know that I was helping to restore the homes of the less fortunate. This past senior school year, I took the volunteer position of purchasing and stocking the milk for my church’s food pantry each week. This was not an overly difficult job, but it was super rewarding to feel like I had a small part in providing something meaningful to the many needy people who rely on the food pantry each week. Through my school, I had the opportunity to be a member of the Link Crew which was a program that helped integrate freshmen into our high school. We were partnered with another member of the crew and given a small group of freshmen to mentor. At the beginning of the school year, we would gather the day before school started to help the freshman with their orientation. We would also check on them from time to time and see if they needed any kind of help with school. We also volunteered our time at certain activities like parent/teacher conferences or local school carnivals. It was fun to get to know the other kids in the program while helping others. Lastly, I had such a good experience in high school volunteering that I definitely know that I would like to continue to find volunteer opportunities in college.

What advice would you give to other teens to inspire them to achieve their dreams, and how they can overcome challenges they’ve faced?
When it comes to achieving your dreams, I would say don’t ever limit yourself. No matter where you come from or what obstacles are in your way, you can achieve anything you put your mind to. I think the most important thing to remember is to set goals for yourself and work through them one at a time. Don’t try to do everything at once because that can be very overwhelming, and you might give up. I also think it’s really important to reflect on what you want in your future and not what other people around you want. It’s easy as a teen to want to please your friends and family, but it’s really important to understand yourself and what you really want to get out of life in the future. We also tend to get caught up in the here and now, but we need to be thinking ahead. As far as overcoming challenges, I think having a strong support system is crucial. This does not necessarily have to be your family, but it’s great if it can be. You can also find wonderful support and mentorship through your teachers, coaches, clergy, and peers. I think all teens need to have someone they can go to who will listen to them and provide guidance. It’s also important to set small goals for yourself when you are faced with a challenge. This will help you to know that you can still reach your dreams even when things seem difficult. Nothing is ever impossible.

Who do you find inspiring?

I find my great great grandfather to be the most inspiring to me. He was a Chickasaw Indian and he grew up in the Chickasaw Nation here in Oklahoma. He attended an Indian boarding school and was highly intelligent and hard working. When he was graduating high school, he and some of his peers were taken from their families and put on a train headed to Vanderbilt University in Nashville. When they got there the citizens were lined up to see the “wild Indians” arrive. I guess they were surprised to see young men in suits get off the train. The young men had to attend a boarding school in the neighboring town where they could be taught Latin as it was a requirement to attend Vanderbilt at that time. The following year my great great grandfather started college at Vanderbilt. He ended up having to leave due to illness and moved across the country to California to finish his degree at Stanford. He also ended up earning a law degree as well. Then, he came back to Oklahoma to practice law. He ended up serving as a county judge and helped build the law school at the University of Oklahoma. My great great grandfather is such an inspiration to me because he overcame so many things in his life. He was highly intelligent and worked hard to achieve great things. From the time that I was little, my Mom made sure that I knew his story and respected my Chickasaw heritage. I am a proud member of the Chickasaw Nation and I only hope that I can represent our tribe in a way that would make him proud.

Brooke Marcum - Florida
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Leah S. Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Brooke has faced several challenges. Challenges like moving from Kentucky to Florida after her freshman year, when her dad lost his job, leaving Behind childhood friends and family. Most teens would have become bitter and angry. Not Brooke. She has the amazing ability to stay positive. Brooke handles life with such grace and beauty. She will always protect the innocent and chooses love over hate. She is a huge help to her community and does everything from babysitting to volunteer work. She is not your typical teen. She inspires her peers to be better simply by choosing to be kind. Also, Brooke has a 4.4 GPA.

Tell me about the different ways you have given back to your community through community service and volunteer work.

I am a member of my school’s Interact club and National Honors Society. Both organizations have given me wonderful opportunities to give back to my community through volunteer work.
One of my favorite volunteer opportunities is EarlyAct, which is an elementary school version of Interact. This club was started in my community this year. Through EarlyAct children are encouraged to start giving back to their communities at a young age. I am grateful for the opportunity to act as a role model for a younger generation and to foster a love of community service.
Another amazing opportunity I had was volunteering for Rise Against Hunger. The last time I was able to work with this organization, my fellow volunteers and I put together over 50,000 bags of food. I love working with this organization as a volunteer because we are able to help so many people by just giving a few hours of our time.

What opportunities have you gotten to help spread positivity and grace to others?
Every day is an opportunity to spread positivity and grace to others. Treating others with kindness and respect, even in small ways, is the best way to spread positivity and grace. Sometimes it’s as simple as smiling at someone in passing or voicing the complement you were thinking.

Your freshman year of high school you moved from Kentucky to Florida. What was your experience like, and how did you overcome the challenges you faced along with it?
Honestly, it was a difficult time for me. I had to leave friends, family, and my home. I had a difficult time making friends at first because I am a fairly shy person, but when I started pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I was able to become friends with a great group, and I’m sure we will be lifelong friends.

What inspired your passion for your academic career of attending Florida State University in the fall, while also striving to obtain a doctorate of occupational therapy?
I have always had a natural passion and genuine love for learning. I am thrilled to be attending Florida State University in the fall. It was my top choice due to its excellent academics and exciting student life. I have chosen to pursue a career in occupational therapy because I was able to observe an occupational therapist while volunteering at a medical daycare. Through this experience, I fell in love with occupational therapy. Working hard in school has taught me discipline and made me a more motivated person. Because of my hard work I will be graduating in the top 15% of my class with a 4.4 weighted GPA.

What advice would you give to others to inspire them to work hard for what they want, or some ways they can give back to their community?
My advice is that your life is your own and you should take charge of it. If there is something you want you should take initiative, work hard for it, believe in yourself, and ask for help when you need it. It won’t always be easy, everyone stumbles along the way but that’s part of the journey. As for community service, everyone should give back. I would advise you to join a local organization because that is an easy way to learn about and participate in community service. You could also simply google “volunteer opportunities near me”.

Alexis Butler - Arkansas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Lori Hutton
Photography by Whitney Vassar Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Alexis Butler has served in Student Council and other leadership roles all throughout her school years: president of Beta, officer for science club, officer in FBLA, student council member, student tutor, chief editor of the yearbook and school paper, and volunteer for the community garden and several other school projects including blood drives and backpack projects. She will be valedictorian of her class this year and has already received the Scholars scholarship to A-State thanks to her 4.13 GPA and 32 on her ACT. She is always willing to motivate others and encourage her friends and fellow students. I love that she steps up to encourage those that do not have confidence! She is truly an inspiration!

What volunteer project has been your favorite and means the most to you? Why?
For the past two years, I have tutored elementary aged students. During elementary school, I always looked up to older students. The older students served as some of my biggest role models and made me feel comfortable at school. To know I can have the same effect on young kids makes me so happy. I also love the fact that just maybe those kids that I tutor might learn to love school and learning as much as I do.

Tell me more about volunteering at your local hospital, what is that like?
Last year, I served as a patient ambassador on the pediatric floor of the hospital. I helped the nurses by passing out ice, answering calls, and aiding in bathing the babies. I even got to shadow the nurses and doctors some nights. I am forever grateful for the experience. By interacting with many patients every day, I improved my communication skills. I also have a newfound respect for those who work in healthcare. I love helping others, so interacting with parents and babies was amazing.

What academic achievement are you most proud of? Why?
I am most proud of my ACT score. I have always worked hard to do good on the ACT, and it has always been a goal of mine to get over a 30. When I got a 32 my junior year, I felt like all my hard work paid off. I took the ACT four times: once in 7th grade, once in 10th grade, and then twice my junior year (and one of those was the free ACT for juniors).

What is one goal that you have for your future?

My biggest goal is to be accepted into law school. By becoming a lawyer, I have the power to help and empower others. I have always lived by the concept of leaving this world better than I found it!
Picture

What advice would you give someone to motivate them to have more confidence?
My biggest piece of advice is to surround yourself with people who make you happy. I have one of the best support systems. The people in my life have pushed me to be the best version of myself. When you are surrounded by encouraging people, you encourage others! Being encouraged and encouraging others can make you feel so confident.

What are your plans for college, and why did you chose to take this path?
After looking, applying, and receiving acceptance letters from several colleges, I noticed one thing that seemed outrageous to me: the price. Even with the scholarships the schools were offering me, I still found the tuition to be overpriced. I did some research and realized that there is another option. A community college about twenty-five minutes away from my house offers an accelerated program called the ASAP program. This offers students to get an associate’s degree in less than a year for a much more affordable price. One of my biggest goals in life is to make as much money as fast as possible, so with this I will be finishing faster than most people in my grade and be spending less. Overall, it pertains to my goals in life better. After finishing this program, I’ll then transfer to a state university to only work on my major and minor, so all of my prerequisites will be finished and I won’t be required to stay on campus and pay into other unnecessary fees.

What inspired you to major in telecommunications and marketing?
What inspired me to major in telecommunications is actually a class I am taking in high school right now. The class is called radio and tv, but our group is called Rewind. We produce newscasts and create short films there. I developed a love for working a camera and for editing. It was then I realized, “This is what I want to do for a living”. There are many different pieces of telecommunications like journalism (news) or film (movies), but when I did research, I found the best way to make money in this career is by doing some marketing with it which would be making commercials. That’s why I chose marketing to be my minor.

Picture

What is your favorite part of REWIND and getting to make films and newscasts?
As I mentioned, Rewind is where I found my passion, but my favorite part of the class itself I would say is getting to learn new things with different projects and different editing styles. On March 9, our class went to our Indiana State Broadcasters Association contest where several of the class' works were submitted. A friend of mine and I earned second in the copywriting category and our class as a whole placed second as being Indiana’s TV School of the Year.
Picture

I know you have been a member of Mbassadors for 3 years, what does that involve?
Mbassadors is our school’s concert choir. I have been in choir for 7 years this year. Mbassadors is the highest concert choir one can be in at our school. I joined as a sophomore, so this is my third year in the choir. We practice during the day and when we’re preparing to go to our State Qualifications contest, we also practice outside of school.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone that is in a family situation similar to yours?
I would just tell people that the situation gets easier and you learn to adapt. It teaches you great life lessons like learning how to forgive and taking unfortunate situations and growing from them. You just can’t look back; you have to keep moving forward and figure out how to change a bad situation into a learning opportunity.

She is a DAR good citizen; she represented her school at Girls State and was elected state representative! She plays volleyball, swims, and is president of the drama club. She does all this and has a 4.3 and 27 college hours!!!

What have you loved most about your high school experience so far, and what has been your favorite memory you have made?
My favorite high school experience was learning how to deal with my problems. There were many trying times throughout high school, but I somehow made it through all of them. I dealt with a lot of depression and anxiety for almost three years, and my favorite memory was when I realized I finally wasn’t sad anymore. I was listening to a song with the lyrics “I’m not ever going back”. And I’m not, I will never go back to those dark places.

Picture

Tell me about the dedication and hard work that led you to become valedictorian with a 4.3 GPA.
It did take a lot of dedication to get to where I am now. I set a goal for myself on the first day of freshman year: to be my class’s valedictorian. I took many honors, AP, and dual credit classes to try and put myself ahead. While this put me through many long nights of stressful studying, it has been worth it to see myself reach my goal.
Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

What other activities are you involved in at school?
I am a proud quiz-bowl varsity captain, however nerdy that may sound. I am the student body vice president in student council, and secretary for the drama club. I also attended Missouri Girls State, where I was a state representative. I’ve found that I fit comfortably and naturally into leadership roles. I love being responsible for something, even if it is just my varsity quiz-bowl team.

Can you tell me a little bit about your interest and passion in women’s rights?
I have always been surrounded by strong, hardworking women who are passionate about what they do. However, I have to constantly watch these women get knocked down by a society that was not designed for them. If a woman does something right, 100 other things she’s doing are wrong simply because she was born a certain way. The Women’s Rights movement has been painted out to be a radical movement that somehow favors women over men. This is simply not the case; this movement is a movement for equality. Women and men are equals and should be as such. If you think there is not an equality problem, then you are a part of the equality problem.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

How have you become an inspiration to others, and what challenges have you overcome to be where you are today through all that you have accomplished so far?

For nearly three years, I genuinely didn’t think I would make it to my high school graduation. I thought my sadness would win. This is the biggest thing I have ever overcome, and I am not ashamed to talk about my mental health because of it. I had to overcome my own mind, which is extremely difficult for anyone to do. This has given me knowledge and empathy towards other people going through the same thing. I have even convinced some of my friends to try therapy; that is what saved my life and hopefully it could help theirs. I hope that my openness about my mental health struggles inspires people around me to seek help for themselves. There is so much strength in realizing your weaknesses.

Alyssa Kyzar - Louisiana
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Trudy Kyzar
Photography by Luckett Portrait Studio
Issue 26 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Not only is Alyssa Kyzar a 4.0 student, but she has taken on the role of SGA and Senior class president. She is active in her church youth group and has launched a youth missions committee, which she has been elected President. She has developed her own clothing line, “Thiest Threads” to help spread the word of Jesus to other teens. She was a member of FUGE SLA over the summer to become a church camp leader. She is currently enrolled in college classes while in high school.
Picture
What inspired you to design your own clothing line, and what is the meaning behind your brand?
Sharing my faith openly has always been something I’ve struggled with, so I had the idea of creating apparel that would open doors to easily share my faith with others. So, I created Theist Threads. What’s that mean? We are all aware of an atheist; someone who doesn’t believe in God. A Theist is the exact opposite. I’ve realized from previous experience, something as simple as a T-shirt can serve as an amazing tool for sharing the gospel with others. The design for most of my products is unclear. I WANT people to ask “Hey, what’s your shirt mean, or what bible verse is that?” Explaining the purpose and meaning behind the design can turn into a life changing experience for another person. My saying is “let’s open doors and wear cool clothes while we do it!”

Picture
How do you choose to stay active in your faith through your youth group?
Every day, I try to be a better person than I was the day before. My number one goal of each day is to always stand in the word and share encouragement. Being one of the oldest in my youth group, I try my best to set a good example to the younger ones. I try to keep special bonds and connect with each person. This summer, I created a youth missions committee to help the local community. Growing up in a small town, I learned little things can make a big impact.

Tell me a little bit about FUGE SLA and how you became involved in it.
The camp I got saved at, Fuge, holds a very special place in my heart. This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to be accepted into their Student Leadership Apprentice program. It’s a two week long experience for students who want to gain hands on leadership experience in a camp environment. I was trained to be a missionary, and even got to lead bible study for other students!

Picture
How do role models like Sadie Roberston inspire you?
My favorite quote by Sadie is, “My passion is to speak, to write, to encourage.” Even with her large social media platforms, she isn’t afraid to be vulnerable. She’s a loud voice to those in need of an inspiring, nonjudgmental presence in their lives. She embraces her role as a beacon of light and I strive to do the same.

How have you been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA while also being very involved in your community?
I wish I could say it’s easy, but it’s not. The biggest thing is to stay motivated. Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me. I’ve learned not to limit my challenges but challenge my limits.
Picture
What do you love most about helping others through your faith?
Serving others has been a Christian tradition since its establishment. Jesus Himself washed the feet of others and died for us! If Jesus, our Master, gave His life in service to others, how can we expect we’ll do anything less? You’ve probably heard the words, “love your neighbor as yourself” a thousand times by now. We live in such an individualistic society it’s easy to get caught up in our own thing most of the time and not even notice the needy. When I serve others, I’m joining the Lord in his work. And gosh, it feels so good.

Kaleb Peters - Indiana
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Jenni Peters
Photography by MJ Portrait Design
Issue 26 - Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kaleb Peters not only plays football, baseball, and basketball, but he also holds a 4.0 GPA. He is an officer in FFA and very involved, as well as a mentor for Coach Kids. In addition, he is a member of National Honors Society, CP Robotics team, and plays Esports as well. This young man is always busy! He is always willing to help others out or lend a hand at home! He loves his family; he even takes his little brother and nephew to school every morning! He inspires others with his drive and determination!
Picture
Tell us about your academic career so far.
I have always dreamed of attending the best programs in Indiana whether that was engineering at Purdue University or Business at Indiana University. I knew that I would have to excel in school to get into these rigorous programs, but I knew it was possible. Throughout my time in school I have maintained a 4.0 gpa and never strived for anything but the best. Although I may not be first in my class since I am so busy with extracurricular activities, I would never settle for anything less than a 4.0. It has been tough at times, but persistence is key to becoming successful.

How has sports laid out a good future for you?
Although academics come first, sports have given me so many characteristics that are helpful for my future. Whether that is something so simple as teamwork, or maybe more complicated such as the will to be successful. At times sports may seem like they are hard or a waste of time, but they have shaped me today in ways that go unnoticed. Leadership is challenging to teach but within my four years of sports I have learned that life is more enjoyable when you help others in their journey of life.
Picture
Tell us about your involvement with FFA. What is it like being an officer?
Throughout my time an FFA I have realized that agriculture is everywhere. In FFA I have had the opportunity to meet and talk to thousands of new people, go to multiple leadership conferences, and learned so much about agriculture that I didn’t even know existed. My role model as a middle school student was Jared Stillwell, who was an FFA officer at the time, played many sports, and was very intelligent. I not only wished to be him, but I also strived to do everything he did. He told me that being an officer in FFA was the most fun thing in high school because not only do you get to represent your chapter in front of the whole state or nation, you get to encourage others to be more active in learning about agriculture, and you get to tell them about the opportunities they have to better the community which is a very big part of FFA.

Picture
When you aren’t busy with school, what are some things you do in your free time?
When I’m not busy with schoolwork you can find me playing on my basketball, football, baseball, robotics and esports teams. When I am not doing any of those things, I enjoy working on equipment for the farm that I am employed at, hunting, fishing, and trapping. I am involved in Science Club, Key Club, National Honors Society, Student Council, FFA, COACH Kids, Drama Club, Robotics Team, Esports team, and Learning to Lead. During the summer I play on a travel baseball team every weekend and work on a farm to help a local farmer.

Tell us about your experience going to Washington D.C. for a leadership conference.
Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) was a tremendous eye-opening experience. Not only did I get to see the nation's capital and see the monuments, I had the opportunity to learn how to develop a plan for the better of my community. Throughout the week we learned about how others have served their community, setting up a plan to better yourself and others, but also how to put that plan into action for the better of your hometown. I learned how to set goals that ensure that I stay on track to have a successful future and I was able to meet over four hundred new people from all over the nation whose passions were similar to mine.

Picture
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
There is no doubt what I would say is to not let the little things bother you. Too many times in high school I see people cry over something so simple as getting a bad grade on a test. The best thing to do is accept it and study harder next time. Too many people worry about the past or what might happen instead of doing what they know they can do. I believe in learning from your mistakes and moving on. Your future has nothing to do with a simple mistake that you have made.

Tell us about your upcoming experiences at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

I am super excited to be joining the Tar Heel Community this upcoming Fall! My first week there I will be joining my fellow freshmen in a program called Week of Welcome and Fall Fest! These events last for several days and have over 160+ organizations running them! There is lots of food and fun to be had, and I am ready to join in on every event! Finally, I am really excited about joining in on our campus ministries. It is super important to me to keep God on my pathway in life and these organizations allow me to keep him every step of the way!

What are some of your past volunteering opportunities?

I have been involved with several clubs that volunteer throughout the community in some really special ways! My favorite volunteer opportunity would have to be working with Hospice Care. While at Hospice I have learned very wise advice about life from the patients I have spoken to, even some that were a hundred and one! I found that I had a special bond with these patients and they always surprised me with their life stories.

Picture
Tell us about your internship opportunities and what was your favorite one? Why?

I have had three internship opportunities while in High School! My final and favorite internship opportunity happened the final semester of my senior year. This time though I chose a specific field in the operating room, Anesthesiology. I was assigned a designated anesthetist to shadow over during my time period. This one was my favorite because on almost every Wednesday we had pediatric patients! These sweet children were always the highlight of my morning, you never knew what they were going to say next.
Picture
Tell us about your Instagram Fashion Blog and things you post on it. How did this begin?

My Instagram fashion blog is called A Blonde Story! I have always loved fashion and am obsessed with finding out about the newest trends each season. My Instagram blog is meant to showcase outfits that you may see on big time fashion bloggers but for a cheaper price for college girls, who can’t be spending a ton of cash on fashion while in college. How this all got started was while at the beach with some girlfriends they encouraged me to start a fashion blog. I want to encourage other girls or guys to start up fashion blogs to express their character and style for others to admire or be inspired by!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

To begin I would say when beginning your high school journey step back and breathe in that special moment. All the fun memories, good times, and laughs made it an unforgettable experience. My advice is to jump into any club that you feel you may be interested in and choose a top few to indulge all your creative ideas into. My final advice is to never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. There is not a test, audition, or presentation that you can’t accomplish with great success! Always remember you can do anything you put your mind to and never stop until you accomplish your dream.

Kiley Bridgmon – South Carolina
Interview by Larissa Chelius
Nomination by Amanda Bridgmon
Photography by Linda Bridgmon & Lorie Breland
Issue 24 - Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kiley is an upcoming Senior athlete this year. She has the biggest heart and passion for others. She has a 4.741 GPA. She won All Region in softball this past year. Her future goals are to play softball for a college while studying physical therapy.
Picture
What obstacles have you had to overcome while playing softball?
One of the main obstacles I have had to overcome playing softball is confidence. If you don’t step out onto the field every single game with the right attitude and mind set, things will never go your way. You have to believe that you are the BEST girl that ever stepped up to the plate or played that position. No, it’s not being arrogant and thinking you are better than everyone else, it’s confidence!

What kind of training, and time did it take to win All Region in softball this past year?
Softball is definitely a job. You put in the work at practice to be the best possible player you can be. It takes dedication. For me it meant staying after practice to work on the things that didn’t necessarily work that day AT practice. For example, if we hit during practice and I didn’t hit all that great, then I would stay after and fix my swing.

What position do you play for softball?
I mostly play center field, but I have played every position at least once.
Picture

With your love for children, how do you use that love in your everyday life?
I am not known for showing too many emotions in person, however, when it comes to children, I have a soft spot. This past year I mentored a kindergarten class and absolutely fell in love with every single child in that room. I try and look at everyone as I looked at those children and have the same compassion that I would for them.

Tell me a little bit about what you do at home in order to maintain a 4.741 GPA.
To maintain a 4.741 GPA may sound like I do a lot of work at home, but I won’t lie and say that I do. I mostly try and absorb all that I can inside the classroom and then will just go over the material again when I get home.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The only reason I am where I am today is because of God. He has given me every opportunity and every experience I’ve ever been a part of. I would tell someone to trust in Him and love others as He loves us.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I see myself graduating from Physical Therapy school and about to start my new job as a PT.

Picture
What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel like I inspire others to work hard. Without hard work and dedication, you will never be able to succeed in anything that you do.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Jenny Finch inspiring. Not only was she an Olympic Softball player but she is also an incredible person in general.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Sometimes it gets very difficult to keep everything straight at times. It may sound a little crazy, but I put everything that I have to do for the month on my calendar that hangs on my wall. I’ve become so much more responsible using it!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I LOVE to deer hunt with my dad! Every weekend we run dogs in Bamberg and I have the best time. Not only do I get to do what I love but I get to spend quality time with my dad.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can actually sing and do very often at my church, Friendship Baptist!

Pizza or Tacos? Soda or Water? Cats or Dogs?
Tacos, Soda & Dogs!

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to deer hunt in Canada, Parasail, and go to Hawaii.

Allie Maternowski - Kentucky
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo.
Nomination and Photography by Kustom Dezigns Photography.
Featured in Issue 16 of Inspiring Teens Magazine.

The Nomination: Allie Maternowski is so incredibly sweet and caring. She is always willing to help and is the first to step up when there is a need. The list of clubs, sports, volunteer & service projects she is a part of is incredible (many of them she has held a leadership position in); and she manages to maintain a 4.29 GPA and a perfect school attendance (since 6th grade). Allie really is an inspiration and joy to be around.
Picture
Tell me about your leadership roles in clubs and sports.
I have been involved in the Key Club at HCA since 9th grade, and I am the President this year. I have been involved in the National Honor Society at HCA since 10th grade, and I am the Vice President this year. I have been involved in the Spanish National Honor Society at HCA since 10th grade and had the leadership role as the chaplain last year. I have played volleyball for Heritage Christian Academy (HCA) since 5th grade. I played the setter position and was a co-captain on the team. I have played tennis for HCA since 7th grade, and I am the number one seed on my team.

What is your favorite thing about being a leader?
My favorite thing about being a leader is encouraging and motivating others. I feel the best way to do that is to lead by example. Showing others instead of just telling them what needs to be done to accomplish something is, I think, much better received. It is so important to encourage and lift up others during the process.

Why do you think you are so inspiring?
I feel that I am inspiring because I try to practice the golden rule. I treat others the way I would want to be treated. I think others can sense if you are who you really claim to be. I care about people and try to be helpful in any way that I can. In volleyball season during my senior year, I got an injury. I was accustomed to starting and playing the entire game, but then I had to sit out. This was a very humbling experience for me because instead of being cheered on, I cheered on my teammates from the sidelines. I truly enjoyed being helpful and encouraging to my teammates.
Picture
How do you maintain your GPA of a 4.29 with all your extra-curricular activities?
I am able to keep up my GPA along with other activities because I have learned that the busier I am, the more I can accomplish. I am very organized, and I always prioritize the things that I need to get done. I spend a substantial amount of time studying since it is very important to me to always do my best. I put my whole heart into all that I do to glorify God. I also have a strong work ethic and am very competitive. I do best when I am challenged, so being involved in many activities has helped me to better manage my time and keep my GPA up.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I plan to have a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture and work in that area. I love gardening, and I have been raising vegetables and flowers with my grandmother since I was very young. I even entered items in the Western Kentucky State Fair with my grandmother and was awarded many ribbons for our vegetables and flowers. I want to work in the field of Horticulture because I really enjoy it. Eventually, I hope to open my own nursery and teach others how to garden the way my grandmother taught me.

Lia Kurkimilis
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination & Photography by TAP Photography
Issue 17 | Music
North Carolina

The Nomination: Lia Kurkimilis plays the piano and is the flute section leader in concert band and woodwind section leader in marching band. She is 4th in her class with a 4.4 g.p.a. and has volunteered over 200 hours. She intends to be a medical examiner, specializing in forensic pathology.
Picture
How did you become so interested in playing multiple instruments? Tell us about them.
My desire to play multiple instruments stemmed from my inheritance of my mom’s flute. I started out pretty poorly, incapable of playing even three notes-- but the more I used music to cope, the more I improved, and I knew I wanted to express myself through other outlets. I became interested in playing the piccolo when I joined marching band. It was such a bold instrument that I knew I had to learn it. I have always loved the piano; it’s my dad’s favorite instrument, and there is something really cool about being able to sit down at a piano anywhere and play.

If given the opportunity, would you teach younger students how to play instruments?
I would definitely take the opportunity to teach younger students how to play the instruments I play. I am the flute section leader of my concert band, and I look forward to sectionals in which I can work with the other flutes. Furthermore, every Thursday for the first half of lunch, I meet with three to four underclassmen in order to teach and guide them on playing the piccolo. It is fulfilling to be able to share something I love so much while learning a couple things myself.
Picture
How do you maintain your outstanding GPA of a 4.4 with your extracurricular activities?
I balance my academics and extracurricular activities through a structured schedule. If a deadline is not in my planner, it’s not in my brain. As long as I stay slightly ahead of my homework, I will have time to do the things I enjoy; more work now means more play later.

Tell us about some of your volunteer opportunities that landed you with over 200 hours service.
I have volunteered with many clubs and organizations, but some of my favorites have been my work through the Yancey Humane Society and the VolunTEEN program at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. I instantly see the results of my work at the humane society, where simply walking a dog can coax them out of the fear of abuse. At the hospital, I served in the ER and main lab, helping patients on the front lines as well as behind the scenes.

Picture
What are your plans for the future?
I am fortunate enough to have received an academic scholarship from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where I plan to major in pre-medicine biology. I will then study pathology in medical school and forensic pathology in a state-based fellowship. I am passionate about advocating for the victims of homicides, suicides, and accidents, who can no longer speak for themselves; I will strive to bring justice to them and comfort and closure to their families.

Nomination by Stephanie Taylor
Photography by Amanda Reed
West Virginia
Issue 17 | Volunteer

The Nomination: Austin Taylor is a senior at Mingo Central High with a 4.7 GPA and is an exemplary student and outstanding citizen who is very committed to his academics and serving our community. Austin is very involved in community service but one dear to his heart is the We Can program that assists underprivileged children in our community.
Picture
How did you become involved in the We Can program, and can you tell us a little about it?In 9th grade I was recommended by several teachers to join the We Can Camp.
The We Can program is a three-day camp where as a counselor I attempt to make the kids have one of the best summer experiences of their life from taking them swimming to sneaking them midnight snacks.
Picture
What other kind of community service projects have you done? I have worked throughout my school years with things like student government, student ambassadors, beta club, and HSTA club. I also help around the community with the food drives, seasonal community dinners, and the Mingo Kids New View. The Mingo Kids New View is a foster program where we look at cases and attempt to help the child. This can sway from helping with the actual case to providing comfort to the child.

What are some of the benefits of maintaining a 4.7 GPA and what tips can you provide to maintain such good grades?
With a 4.7 GPA I have more opportunities in college and more colleges are interested in me because of what I can do.
My biology teacher taught me how to study my sophomore year and since then my grades have improved tremendously. What I have noticed is that most kids read over the material, which is not a good way to study. She taught me how to write things out repeatedly to really learn the material.
Picture

What do you plan on doing after high school?
After high school I will be attending the University of Charleston for a degree in dual Biology and Chemistry pre-professional. After that, I will be learning at the medical school in Lewisburg with a focus in Pathology. After med school, I will focus in on Forensic Pathology and take the board exams which certifies me as a Forensic Pathologist and work my way to become a Medical Examiner.

Brooklyn Mann
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination & Photography by Sharie Thompson (STories Photography)
Oregon

The Nomination: Brooklyn -Class of 2019 has been accepted into multiple direct entry nursing programs and has been awarded $96,000 in Academic Awards including the $88,000 President’s Scholarship. As of this writing she has two other offers similar to this one. She submitted her applications at age 16.
Help me wish her the best
!
Picture
Tell me about your Academic Awards.

For high school, I have been chosen as Student of the Month once per year and Student of the Year sophomore year. I am in National Honors Society and have maintained all A’s throughout high school. For college, I have been selected to receive the Presidents merit scholarships at the four colleges I’ve been accepted to as well as another merit scholarship for one of my schools.

What is included in the Presidents Scholarship?

It is a yearly amount of scholarship money that covers a large portion of my tuition. If I maintain a full-time class schedule and above average grades, the scholarship is renewed every year of undergraduate study.
Picture
What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about my education and my future. I care for and help others in as many ways as possible. I volunteer, tutor, and work at a daycare. I know that anyone can do what they set their hearts to, just like me.
Picture
How did you become interested in nursing?

I’ve always been drawn to caring for others. Since I was young, I have loved taking care of babies and playing with children. That helpfulness and care has followed me in life. Through volunteering in my local hospital’s NICU, shadowing nurses, tutoring younger students, and working at a daycare, I found myself determined to become a nurse and to help as many people as I can.

After high school, I plan to go to nursing school for my bachelors degree and then complete a masters nursing degree. After that, I will work as a neonatal nurse practitioner in a level four (highest level) neonatal intensive care unit.

Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by
Jaki Good Miller Photography
West Virginia

The Nomination: During the summer before her sophomore year, Caitlin Cowell’s hometown of Richwood, West Virginia was devastated by a flood that destroyed her high school and forced students to be relocated to an abandoned grade school. Despite the adversity, Caitlin has managed to do something few can boast—she is an upcoming freshman in the Harvard class of 2023. Caitlin is the senior class president, student council vice president, a member of National Honor Society, a majorette, the clarinet section leader, and the top varsity distance runner on her school’s track and cross country teams. A LEADER inside and outside of the classroom, Caitlin boasts many awards and honors including an AP Scholar award, three All-State track awards, and multiple titles as a part of the majorette line. She actively volunteers in her community and helps to serve her peers as a part of the Christian Young Life organization.
Picture
Tell us about your transition to the abandoned grade school after the devastating flood.
The transition between school situations following the flood was interesting, to say the least. It was an undeniably bleak scenario, but one that students, faculty, and the community as a whole worked to make the best of. The hardest part was the lack of space that the grade school/portable pods combo offered. The first year we had no room for science labs of any kind and teachers had to work harder to adapt their teaching plans to the space available. Three years later, there is still no room for quintessential high school activities like pep rallies, class tournaments, or Greek week festivities. It has taught everyone how important it is to cherish what you have and not dwell over what’s missing.

When did you become interested in cross country and track?
I started my running career in the 6th grade as a way to get involved at school. By the end of the season, I realized that I had the potential to be competitive in the sport. Running has taught me the value in hard work and determination and the importance of having a team that supports you along the way. It’s become such an important part of my life that I can’t imagine stopping anytime soon.

Tell us about you Christian Young Life Organization and your duties within.
The Young Life program has allowed me to serve others while exploring and cultivating a relationship of my own with my Creator. One of the truest lessons Young Life has taught me is how important it is to make sure your spiritual health is flourishing before you try to help others. I think that’s a lesson everyone needs to learn and can be applicable whether you are religious or not. I am a senior Young Life leader at my school. I help run Campaigners (Bible studies), Young Life Clubs, and help to spread God’s word. As a leader, I received the opportunity to serve as a “buddy” at a Young Life Capernaum camp. Capernaum was created solely for giving people with disabilities the chance to experience the love of God with no judgment. At camp, I saw the “outcasts” of society honored for their differences. It is an experience I will forever cherish.

Congratulations on getting into Harvard! I’m sure your family and community are excited for you! What is your success formula?
I am so proud of being accepted to such a prestigious school and joining such an accomplished class, but there was no secret formula for success that got me there. I’m a dreamer at my core. I knew I wanted to accomplish something out of the ordinary and worked every day to put that dream into fruition. I was lucky enough to have my friends, family, and school supporting me the whole way.

What are you most excited about when thinking about going to school there?
I love the town where I have grown up, but it is very typical of poor, rural areas in West Virginia. Families live in poverty and drug abuse is an issue, but there is a sense of community that is found nowhere else. More than anything, I am so excited to have the opportunity to experience life so different from what I’m used to. The diversity, freedom to explore your interests and map out your own education, and connections to the world made Harvard into a bit of a fairy tale for me. I hope to take what I learn there and implement it into my home-state and the world around me.

What will you be studying?
Currently, I want to study Cellular and Molecular Biology with the hopes of attending medical school.

What advice would you have to give younger teens on being inspiring (like you!)?
When I think of someone inspiring, I think of someone fighting for the rights of minorities, supporting the less fortunate, or overcoming insurmountable odds.
If you had to take anything from my story, I want it to be that you don’t have be great in all aspects to achieve your dreams. Find what you are passionate about and work every day to make it your reality.
