Sydney Fox – Missouri
Nomination by Katie Fox
Photography by Nathan Gilmore
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sydney Fox is an inspiring teen because she is constantly working to achieve her goals in dance with grace, kindness and empathy. Whenever she is not in the studio working, she is taking care of younger dancers, encouraging her teammates or offering hugs to those who need it. While staying focused on her goals, she is never one to say no to a friend in need or a younger dancer who just wants to sit in her lap. She achieves much on stage but her greatest accomplishments are off stage with her kind heart, generous spirit and encouraging smile.

Tell us about your dance career.
I started dance when I was 3 years old because my mom saw me dancing around the house and put me in dance class and it has just grown into who I am. I still dance competitively and one of my goals is to dance professionally some day.

What do you love most about dance?
The things I love most about dance are being able to express my feelings out on the dance floor, to have a space where I feel loved and supported, being able to work with and meet amazing people.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
A favorite accomplishment from dance is being able to see the growth I’ve made through the help of my team and instructors. 5 years ago I would not have had the courage to get on the stage and speak to the judges and talk to other dancers from different studios. This summer I was able to have that courage and participate in The World’s Dance Pageant and World’s Dance Competition.

What dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
I study contemporary, lyrical, ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and most recently ballroom. My favorite style is contemporary because it allows me to express my feelings and dance in many different ways.

What is one of your current goals with dance and what are you doing to achieve it?
One of my current goals is to dance professionally. I go to dance class consistently, I give 100% even when it is hard, I do things out of my comfort zone and seek feedback from my instructors.

Tell us about a favorite dance competition.
My favorite dance completion was The World Dance Championship in New Jersey. This is a competition you had to be invited to. 7 of my dances were invited back including two of my favorite dances “Six” and “Our Story”. 2 of my dances were World Champions. “Six” was undefeated all season. “Our Story” was unreal because we got to dance with our dance teachers.

If you could dance on any tv dance show, which one would it be and why?
I would love to be on World of Dance. My dance teacher was on this show its first season and he is one of my biggest role models.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?
I am looking forward to Prom.

How would your friends describe you?
Funny, sensitive, empathetic and loyal.

What is your family like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
I come from a family of 4. I am the oldest. I have one younger sister who is 13 and also dances. I stand out in that I try to be a great role model for my sister when it comes to friends, dance and life choices.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I do not give up on my goals even outside of dance. It does not matter what the platform is (dance, school, personal) I am constantly working to meet my goals and better myself as a person, student and dancer.

What else would you like to talk about?
I want to be able to inspire others to be the best they can be no matter what their goals are. I want all people to see the beauty in themselves and know they can achieve anything and be anything as long as they believe in themselves,

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Dance is something I feel very passionate about and could talk about forever. Dance is something I can do no matter what is going on in my life because it allows me to express all emotions.

How did you find your photographer, Nathan Gilmore? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I entered a contest for a free mini shoot on Instagram. I won the shoot and after getting to know Nathan, he asked me to be a brand ambassador. Working with Nathan is easy and fun. He has total respect for his models as well as their families. He creates an atmosphere of fun while also professional. I love that he wanted to work in the water but also incorporate dance.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
At the dance studio or on a boat.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
1 more year until I’m a senior and I can’t wait!

Alyssa Koeltzow – Colorado
Nomination & Photography by Capture Me Photography by Chandra
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Alyssa Koeltzow is a Colorado high school senior class of 2024. Her favorite two things in the world are her cat and car. Her dog Obi is basically her in animal form. She loves to paint and go to concerts for various artists but is a Swifty fan for life! She is planning on going into the medical field and working with the heart.
Picture
Photography by Capture Me Photography by Chandra

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am an officer for and have been highly involved in FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) for years and am exploring the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) programs to help me pay for college and serve my country. I have also played volleyball since I was 5 years old and would say my competitive spirit helped me become well rounded on the court. I can play most positions and my goal is to stay out on the court as much as possible to contribute to the team win.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am looking toward the future and want to study medicine, specifically the heart. My current goal is to work in Cardiology, specifically Interventional Cardiology. I'm aware of the years of study, schooling, and commitment this involves, but I can honestly say that I've loved anything related to science for years. As soon as I started to learn about the heart in more detail during my Anatomy and Physiology classes in high school I was hooked, and I haven't looked back.

Why did you choose the medical field and working with the heart in particular?
I chose the medical field because I really like science in general. It’s a field where you’re always going to have something new – it will never be repetitive. I like the heart because it interested me from the beginning, and I kept finding myself wanting to learn more about it. It’s amazing that a muscle can keep the whole body moving and circulate blood through so many veins and arteries.

What are you doing now to prepare for this career?
Continuing my high school classes, in particular College Biology, as I already finished up Anatomy and Physiology last year. I’m also focused on finding a college where I can Major in Biology or a similar major as my Pre-Med focus. I’m also looking for a school where I could possibly get some clinical experience or access in conjunction with classroom learning, such as a school closely associated with a hospital or research facility.

How did you find your photographer, Capture Me Photography by Chandra? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found Capture Me Photography by Chandra on Instagram and really loved her style and the way she incorporated light and nature into her senior photographs. I just knew she would help capture me the way I see myself and wow did she succeed. She was great to work from start to finish! She started with getting to know me and what I wanted in my senior pics and even came up with a greenhouse location that was better than I could have imagined. She made it easy to relax and be myself throughout the shoot.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
Not having as many classes, for a change, so I can stay on top of the classes I do have as well as still have time to ENJOY this last year with my friends. I know a lot of us are going to be moving to different places for college and our lives will change so I want to make sure I create some great memories while I still have the chance. I also look forward to deciding where to go to college and starting to be more independent and on my own in a new place.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
Go to concerts, shopping together, running to Dutch Bros. for a drink, laughing and hanging out at the park. We sometimes find the time to head out to Horsetooth, a local reservoir in the foothills, just to enjoy small hikes or appreciate the sunrise.

What words of wisdom do you have for underclassmen?
Find a good teacher you can go to with questions, concerns, and advice. High school can feel overwhelming and there are sometimes pressures that come from classwork but ALSO that you put on yourself and having a great teacher you can go to when you’re stressed is so helpful. High school teachers have probably seen or heard it before and can really relate and give you great advice on how to handle things that come up.

Tell us about your cat & dog & your special relationship?
Let’s start with Pete . . . he’s my “covid” cat. We adopted him from the shelter and from the minute he saw me he claimed me – he literally climbed on my lap and settled into my shoulder. He’s slightly crazy, has been known to steal bread from the counter and he’s not afraid to reach his paw out to try to pull my hand with a bite of ice cream towards himself. Obi is my 1-year-old Labrador so he’s still got all the puppy energy and just wants to be loved – all the time.

What about your car makes it so special to you?
I don’t know if I can completely explain it. My grandpa got me interested in cars since I saw him working on cars growing up. When it was time for me to get my own car, I worked hard to find a Hyundai Genesis in good shape that I could afford. I had to use my savings for my portion of the cost and I’m proud that it wasn’t just handed to me. I am trying to save up now to do some upgrades on it, but it will take time to do all the cool things I want to do to my car.
Tell us about a special picture you've painted.
When it comes to painting, it’s more about the painting experience than the final picture. I’ve done several different types of paintings and my mom and I sat through a Bob Ross tutorial and tried to follow along, with lots of pauses and rewinding to catch up. Our final results weren’t bad, but they definitely didn’t look like Bob Ross’s final product.

What about Taylor Swift do you admire the most?
She’s got a song for everything. Good days, bad days, heartbreak, anger, positivity – she’s so good at capturing the moods and feelings that everyone has and her lyrics are often so clever it amazes me. I also admire how she isn’t afraid to speak her mind and that she’s open about how she’s had to learn to be herself. It’s great to see a strong female role model.

Tell us about your family and what you like to do together.
My immediate family consists of my sister Morgan, who just left the country to go to the University of Chester in England, my dad, and my mom. I also am lucky enough to have both sets of my grandparents relatively close, with my dad’s parents here in my hometown and my mom’s parents only about 8 hours away in Kansas. My parents are divorced so many of our family holidays are somewhat split, but they work hard to make sure that I get time with both sides of the family whenever possible.

What is a family memory you will never forget?
Camping up in the Rocky Mountains. We’d go up there with my grandparents and spend a 3–4-day weekend in the camper and enjoy fishing and riding 4-wheelers through the pine trees and aspens. We’d see a lot of smaller wildlife and even see deer, moose, and eagles. It’s so beautiful up there and I appreciate the chance to slow down and spend that time with my family.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Oh my goodness, get me started talking about fast cars, Taylor Swift Music, or my cat Pete and I can talk your ear off. I also find myself explaining and discussing everything I learn and know about the heart and bones - biology class is something I always look forward to, to be honest. I also love lots of different types of music, so I love to find new artists and am working on building my vinyl collection, as I really like to listen to music on my record player as I clean or study.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Asleep. If that weren’t an option I’d probably be shopping (with someone else’s money, if I had my choice) or maybe I’d lock myself in my room to get caught up on the many “To Be Read” books that are sitting on top of my dresser.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Probably club volleyball season. I love playing in tournaments and the opportunity to go out of state for two different tournaments. The really nice thing about being in club volleyball, beyond the obvious part of playing and being competitive, is that I got to build great friendships with my teammates. We all go to different schools, so if it weren’t for club volleyball, I would have never met these great girls who have become so close.

How did you find your photographer, Photography by Leslie Ann? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Leslie Ann photography is the best! My older sister, Emily, had previously been a 2023 senior influencer for Leslie and I loved her pictures! I decided to take on after her, considering all the opportunities that came with this spot! My senior session was awesome! I was unorganized about the locations I had in mind and Leslie sorted it all out and we had such a successful day! What I loved most about this session was the amount of ideas that Leslie had prepared before the session! She prepared so many poses and the pictures turned out amazing!

Tell us about the 2024 Senior Influencer Team and why you love being on it.
The 2024 Influencer Team includes seniors from all over Knox County. My favorite part about being on the influencer team is advertising and sharing Photography by Leslie Ann’s incredible work! On Facebook and Instagram I get the opportunity to share these senior photos through reposting and posting on my story! Making these connections is rewarding when your close friends are pleased with your senior photos and they want their senior photos taken by Leslie!

What has your tennis career been like and what is the most rewarding part?
I have played tennis since middle school. In the eighth grade I made the decision to stop playing tennis and focus on volleyball. My coach, Ryan Hayden, encouraged me to rejoin tennis freshman year. Ever since then, a smile comes across my face every time I walk out on the court. After consistently working with my team and winning the 2023 sectional, this hard work has definitely paid off! Completing an undefeated regular season my junior year was the most rewarding experience! All the hard work and dedication paid off when we gained this title!

What is your team like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
The girls South Knox Tennis Team is outstanding! We get along so well together even when we have such a big team! We encourage and support each other throughout the school year and season! We all relate with this passion that we have to play. I enjoy making connections with everyone! I stand out when it comes to being the DJ anywhere we go. My team counts on me to provide music that will encourage us to bring the energy for the match ahead!

What does it mean to be "All Conference in Girls Tennis"? What does this mean for you?
For this honor, student-athletes are chosen by opposing coaches. This is initiated by each coach nominating players from their team. Gaining “All Conference” is so special because these coaches think you are deserving to be recognized for your work. All the hard work put forth in tennis is what that title represents.

What is your favorite class and what is the most interesting thing you've learned this year?
English is what I enjoy the most. We are working on narratives. I have learned more about myself while writing these short narratives. These assignments are focused on the lessons you have learned in your life and sharing those personal experiences in detail. The interesting part is learning how to describe these life lessons and share them.

What is Interact Club and what are your roles and responsibilities in it?
Interact Club’s main goal is to value putting service above self. Interact Club holds many meetings at South Knox and showing up is my responsibility. Taking part in the activities that take place at these meetings is a role that I prioritize.

What is the most fun you've had in that club?
At the beginning of February this year we had a meeting that involved creating valentines day care bags for the residents at BridgePointe Health Campus. This was a fun experience where we were able to show love to these residents with creativity by making cards for them!

What has been your favorite service project in the NHS?
A service project that I thoroughly enjoyed in the National Honor Society was participating in Shop With A Cop. This was an opportunity to shop with an elementary schooler from a surrounding county school to complete their Christmas wish list at Walmart! Participating in Shop With A Cop allowed me to witness an important moment in a child’s life where they can have their needs met and feel joy!

What is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and why do you love being a member?

Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a club that meets weekly on Friday mornings to share a message about Christ and the love He constantly shows us. South Knox calls this club “Fellowship of Christian All.” We desire for everyone to come, even those who aren’t involved in sports. There's a big turn out every Friday morning! I love being a member of this club because there is this mission to act with love and share who ultimately gives us this strength. This mission is encouraged inside and outside of our school!

What leadership opportunities have you had because of these organizations and sports?
A leadership role that I have participated in for the past 3 summers of high school is tennis camp. South Knox tennis camp is an opportunity for elementary and middle school students to advance their tennis skills. This camp is led by coaches and high school tennis athletes. Leadership is an important skill to have when it comes to leading this camp. Each drill needs to be thoroughly explained and there are multiple leaders taking a group of kids to each drill!

How would you describe your leadership style?
I enjoy being a motivating leader. Motivating anyone to accomplish a goal they strive towards is what I look forward to!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a boys middle school tennis coach at South Knox! I love this sport and how impactful it can be! In this leadership role I have been taught how to organize a practice in order for it to be productive for all of the boys! This opportunity has led me to watch the boys grow from the first summer practice till the first match! I am so excited for them and I cannot wait to see what this 2023 season has in store for these 19 future tennis stars!

What else would you like to talk about?
I serve as a difference maker at Bethany Christian Church in Vincennes Indiana! Every other Sunday I get to spend a class with 4 and 5 year olds and worship with them! This opportunity has led me to form multiple relationships within the church and get involved in such a wonderful congregation!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel passionate about working hard for what you set your mind to. I maintain horses and learn how to train them. This takes a patient and focused mind set. I use these skills in the workplace, at school, and when I am on the tennis court! It is such an important skill to attain in order to become your best!

Picture

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?

I fill any free time I have with tennis. Tennis brings me out of a bad day. If I have a free day I fill that time with practicing this exciting sport.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
For the off-season the majority of the South Knox girls tennis team visits the Evansville Tennis Center once a week for lessons. This routine starts in October and ends in February. I am so excited to start these lessons! Working together as a team and taking the opportunity to play is a wonderful experience!

What is your favorite family memory that you will never forget?
Ever since I was little, my family and I went to a beach house in Outer Banks, North Carolina every summer. Outer Banks has definitely become one of my favorite places to go. While we are there we spend a lot of time at the beach and the pool. My dad and I love to go on long walks and find cool seashells. My grandma’s favorite shells were purple, so we always collected them and brought them to her. I also loved playing beach volleyball and swimming in the ocean with my cousin and siblings. After a long day at the beach we always ate dinner at one of our favorite restaurants there and went go karting after. When we get back from dinner we always play board games as a family!

Emma May Brown

Emma May Brown – Maine
Nomination & Photography by @StewartSmithPhotography
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Emma May Brown recently created a platform called “A Fresh Start”. The goal of this platform is to raise $10,000.00 for a local organization that provides safe housing to women and children who have been victims of Domestic Violence. The money raised will provide basic hygiene needs as well as fun experiences for the kids. For the last 10 years, Emma and her mother have provided random acts of kindness to struggling individuals during the Christmas season and on Christmas Day. In 2021 Emma volunteered her time teaching youth basic mixed martial arts techniques.
Picture
Photography by @StewartSmithPhotography

Why did you choose "A Fresh Start" for your platform?
Assisting families and children who have been victims of Domestic Violence became a passion of mine due to the influence my mother’s career had on me. For the last 12 years, my mother has been an investigator/placement coordinator for DHHS, Child Protective Services. Through the years of her work, I’ve gained an understanding of the challenges people go through when trying to leave a Domestically Violent relationship and the financial hardships that arise from doing so. The name of my platform “A Fresh Start” felt fitting with my vision.

What was the hardest thing about getting it up and running and how did you cross that hurdle?
Learning how to promote my vision to others was the most challenging part of starting my platform. With the help of my mother, I learned that using social media such as Facebook was an effective way to consistently promote and update my community on the progress that was being made and the areas I needed help with.

What are you doing to raise the money and what is your deadline?
I’ve shared my vision behind “A Fresh Start” with local businesses, family, and friends. I post several times a week on multiple social media platforms. Each month I create a specific area of needs. Through my advocacy, community members have purchased items I list as being needed and I arrange to pick the items up. Others have made monetary donations which I use to purchase items on my list for that month. October will be the last month I’m collecting items for the year.

Picture
Photography by @StewartSmithPhotography

Tell us about some of the random acts of kindness you and your mother have done together.
Every month or so when going out to eat we randomly pick a family in the restaurant and anonymously pay for their entire meal. During the Christmas season, we’ve randomly picked an individual to give $100.00. We have paid for people's items which appear to be Christmas gifts for their kids when they cash out at boxstores. We have also created an entire Christmas for families and individuals in need.

What is a special memory you two have from doing these acts?
The best part of doing random acts of kindness is seeing the pure surprise and joy it brings to others. My most memorable moments were when my mother and I bought blankets, socks, nonperishable food items, basic hygiene items, etc. to provide to a homeless individual. We wrapped each item and with the help of a police officer on Christmas day we were able to safely locate a needy individual living on the streets. I will never forget watching this man unwrap each gift and with tears in his eyes, saying thank you.

What did you love most about teaching youth basic mixed martial arts?
My original decision to volunteer my time teaching local kids basic Mixed Martial Arts techniques was because I believe that everyone deserves to know how to protect themselves. What I didn’t expect was how fulfilling it would be to watch each of them grow a new level of self-confidence as I worked with them.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Last year I worked hard in school. As a result, I was the only student in my high school selected to attend a two-year vocational program for cosmetology. When I’m not working, attending school, helping the community, making appearances as Teen York County, Maine for the USOA pageant, or spending time with my family, I’m a typical teen. I love photographing sunsets, being at the beach and lake with friends, boating, fishing, four-wheeling, and snowboarding in the winter.

How would your friends describe you?
Friends would describe me as being loyal, trustworthy, compassionate, and fun to be around. I’m typically the mother of my friend's group. I always have a listening ear available and I’m seen as the one who keeps others out of trouble. My friends would say, I’m always willing to help at a moment's notice, I try to bring them hope and inspire them in difficult times. They would also say that I motivate them to keep focused on their ultimate goals.

What are you most excited to learn about in vocational school?
I’m most excited to learn about the anatomy of hair. Learning this will allow me to better understand what products are needed to enhance specific hair types. As a teen, I’m typically influenced to try new skin and hair products based on trends from TikTok and other social media platforms; however, a lot of these trends don't actually work as promoted. I’m also very excited to be in an educational setting, working alongside other peers who have a similar passion and interest.

What else would you like to talk about?
The last six months have been a very exciting time for me. I decided to pursue my dream of modeling and entered into my first pageant as Teen York County, (Maine) in the United States Of America (USOA) pageant. This has given me the chance to connect with other girls from around the state who want to empower, inspire, and uplift others. Being a part of this sisterhood has forced me out of my comfort zone at times and it is teaching me to confidently speak publicly.

What has being part of the pageant taught you about yourself?
Being a contestant of the USOA pageant has taught me that even at a young age I can make a big impact on my community and others. I’ve learned that stepping out of my comfort zone can be scary yet rewarding.

What has your favorite experience been so far in this endeavor?
My experience as Teen York County has been filled with many favorite moments from connecting with little kids during parades and baseball games to joining other families in walks for a cause such as ALS. My heart is warmed when little kids give me and my fellow delegates a hug, they see us as real princesses. The connections I’ve made with individuals not only in my community but across the State of Maine will be lifelong memorable moments.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
The power of music. As a little girl, music was always playing in my house. I remember dancing and singing to music wherever I was. I started learning to play the ukulele, then the violin, keyboard, and electric guitar in school. As I entered my teenage years I took interest in many different genres of music. Music has always been a healthy way for me to learn about myself and the world around me. Music has added serenity, empowerment, comfort, and joy to my life.

If you could play on stage with any band, who would it be and why?
The one person I would love to share the stage with is Lana Del Rey. I’m always impressed when a musician writes their music which Lana does. I find relatability in her lyrics as she talks about the trials and tribulations of being a woman.

How did you find your photographer, @StewartSmithPhotography?
Stewart Smith is a well-known photographer who lives in our area; however, it was a friend of mine who recommended him. After looking at his profile online, viewing his images, and talking with him on the phone, my mom and I decided his passion and energy were a good fit for us. We took the plunge and we’re so thankful we did.

What was your experience like?
Stew immediately made me feel comfortable and reminded me just to be myself. Stew challenged and guided me, we cracked jokes, laughed, and overall had an epic time. Stew is more than a photographer, he’s a wealth of knowledge and has been a guiding light, coaching me every step of the way as I begin this dream of modeling.

What did you love most about it?
When left Stewart Smith’s I had a new level of confidence and comfort in front of the camera. Stew captured images of who I truly am. We ended our first in-studio session with me sitting on the floor eating animal crackers, talking, and laughing. My second photo session with Stew was outside at the beach where I fell in the ocean with my gown on. We once again laughed and continued as if nothing had happened. My experience with Stew will forever be a memorable moment of my teenage years.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Relaxing in bed, with my three cats, watching Grey's Anatomy, and scrolling Pinterest, with a pumpkin candle lit.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
In October I will compete in the USOA pageant in hopes of being crowned Teen Maine. As things wind down from this year's pageant and winter approaches in Maine, I’m excited to get on the slopes and snowboard. This winter I will begin reaching out to modeling agencies and sharing my portfolio in hopes of being signed with one of them. In February I’m headed to Costa Rica with other peers to learn and engage in the culture for ten days.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be true to who you are, don't give up on your dreams even when things become difficult, and push yourself out of your comfort zone so you can grow, be a part of your community, help others, and be compassionate.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/What are your plans?
I plan to move to Florida and work full-time in a salon while modeling on the side. This will help me to achieve my dream of one day owning a salon that specializes in hair extensions and lashes.

Devyn Brasslett

Picture

Devyn Brasslett - Maine
Nomination by Michelle
Photography by Boulier Photography
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Devyn Brasslett is an inspiration to all around her! She is very active in her community from volunteering at the local hospital each summer for the last 3 years to fundraising to help supply much needed items for the hospitals Cardiac floor. She is also on year number two of doing a Back to School supply drive for the local elementary school. She is a very thoughtful young lady that is always looking for ways to help others.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have aspired to be a cardiac surgeon since the 6th grade, creating a platform called Caring for Cardiac. To create awareness, support and education around a world widely faced issue. An impact that is not only personal to me, but my community and the State of Maine as a whole. Community work is always a priority for me, which is why I enjoy spending my summers at Northern Light Hospital to be that next step in change.

What else would you like to talk about?
Young individuals are incredibly underestimated. The true ability and power that we may hold is sometimes ignored. Most of us grow up in a very judgmental society with the highest of expectations. Joining the industry of pageantry and modeling was a huge step for me, I wanted to allow other girls my age, older, younger, all women to understand the ability that we all are capable of. To inspire, and uplift.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My aspiration of becoming a surgeon, the importance of cardiac health and how I became so passionate about it all. Cardiac disease has affected not only me but everyone around me. Losing my grandfather in the second grade to cardiac disease, became really eye opening for me; the ultimate effect of how horrible and common the disease is. The field of surgery interested me, but my ultimate goal was in choosing cardio so that I could save others from going through what myself and those impacted already have.

How did you find your photographer, Boulier Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom is a photographer, when Desiree Boulier first started her journey, she knew my mom and gave insight on the best tips in the world of photographer. Desiree is a sponsor for the pageant that I compete in this October and her work was phenomenal, wanting to continue building my modeling portfolio she was up for the job!
This shoot was so much fun. Desiree made the environment so welcoming and comforting. It was a session full of so much laughter. She was so supportive, constantly complimenting me throughout my shoot. She is just an incredibly kind soul.
I loved how inviting she was. Having experience with many photographers, the best shoots are always when you have a supportive, bubbly, funny photographer. You want them to be just as open with you as you need to be able to relax in your shoot. Desiree made that an easy job!

Briana Smith

9/11/2023

Picture

Briana Smith – Connecticut
Nomination & Photography by Dorothy Hart - A Hart's Eye Photography
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Bree loves Disney and embodies its values of compassion, charity, and courage. She is an appointed Student Representative on the town of Waterford's Youth and Family Services Advisory Board where she advocates for youth's needs in local government programs. She was captain of her girl's track team, Vice President of National Honors Society, Secretary of her class, a peer tutor, and a student photographer. She played unified sports, played in the jazz band, and loves to paddleboard. In the fall, she will attend Stonehill College for Criminology and Political Science as well as their Honors Program.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination was simply a resume of all my activities in high school, not what motivates me. In March of 202, I was diagnosed with PTSD. While it's sad, I feel it played a critical role in finding what I want to do with my life. In the future, I hope to work in the field of criminal justice so I can prevent what happened to me from happening to others. While I don't know exactly what I want to do, whether it's law, national security, or criminology, I know I want to protect others.

What else would you like to talk about?
This is a very broad question, at first, I thought of my work. In the summer, I work at Camp DASH, a day camp in southeastern Connecticut. For two years, I worked as the director of the pre-school program. I am currently working as the director of Peace Place. Peace Place is a safe space for kids to take a break when they're overstimulated, struggling with their mental health, or just need someone to talk to. I love it because I'm able to give kids someone trusting to talk to, while also being my enthousiastic camp counselor self.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk about Disney for hours. I can, and have, on multiple occasions. I could tell you the best and worst resorts, rides, and restaurants; debate about the best character, which is obviously the fabulous Daisy Duck; and create new ride concepts. It's become a bit of an obsession. Specifically, however, I could talk eternally about how Disney's parks and themes of hope and courage can provide coping methods for those struggling with their mental health. In fact, my college essay focused on psycho-analyzing my obsession with Disney and it's positive impact on my trauma.

How did you find your photographer, A Hart's Eye Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer on Instagram after seeing other people's senior photos. I loved her high contrast, cinematic style with bright colors and ambient skies. The images just popped! The experience was really exciting actually. While doing photography at my school, I don't get to be in front of the camera often, so it was fun getting my picture taken for once! Dorothy was the ultimate hype-woman and was so easy to talk to. She helped keep the shoot fun with props and personalization but also had the photos look professional and clean. It was a great dynamic.

She has dedicated her time to volunteer at her dance studio to teach younger students (ages 3-12) several styles of dance, this includes Acrobatics, Jazz, Ballet, etc. She continues to help students find their love for dance.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I, Audrey Brown, am interning at the University of Massachusetts in the Biomedical Engineering department to help improve people’s lives.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am a former gymnast. I was in the top 100 in the United States for beam in my level with a 9.875.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am passionate about autoimmune diseases and how taking a homeopathic approach may be better than Western medicine. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis my freshman year of high school and was put on many pills to “help” treat it. These pills, however, made me feel worse and over time I found homeopathic remedies that worked better and helped put me into remission.

How did you find your photographer, Photography By Andrea? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer is my mom. My experience was special for me as I was able to take my photos on the beach with my family. I loved that I could be myself and capture a memorable moment in my life.

Tell us about the Battalion Executive Officer position at your school and what it means to you to be part of it.

The Battalion XO is the one who handles the battalion cadets and organizes them to be the way we need for our next event. My favorite part is always being able to work with members of our community and assisting underclassmen with finding their place in our program.

What are your specific roles and responsibilities?
I help to make sure the commander’s requests are fulfilled and everyone in our staff is involved in our formation plans and future plans of the battalion. If we are doing a project that involves our local community, I am the contact point for it. The commander and I are always working together to make sure our battalion is always successful.

What type of leader are you, and what is your strongest leadership quality?
I believe my leadership style is delegation. I take every opportunity to work with others and those aspiring to take my position. I always learned by helping those above me and understanding what they do and how they do it- and hold that philosophy now.

What are your duties as Treasurer of the NHS?
When we first start the year, I make sure dues are paid and sent- then when we have our induction ceremony, I make sure all cords, pins, and certificates are ordered and organized for the ceremony. I also track our financials throughout the year and as an officer, am a role model for members of the chapter.

What has been your favorite activity in the NHS so far?
We did 2 sports clinics for youth athletes in our community. We had cheerleading, track, and basketball, the kids loved it and we did too!

What do you love about being the Key Club President?

I love being able to reach underclassmen through other clubs we’re in together and urge them to give Key Club a try! In the past we’ve done so many amazing projects and events with our school and community and I’m so excited to keep that going!

What has your favorite service project been in Key Club?
We did a “Penny War” to raise money for a charity that brings clean drinking water to areas that need it most. It was an amazing way to bring our student body into a project.

What is the Junior Classical League chapter and what do you do in it?
JCL is a national community of Latin students that come together in a Fall and Spring Convention to meet others and compete in academic tests and artistic competitions. In our school chapter, I help plan activities for our club, I run meetings, and I assist the state level Communications Coordinator to include what we’ve been doing as a chapter.

What specifically do you love most about being the Communications Coordinator of your Junior Classical League chapter?
As our chapter Communications Coordinator, I’ve helped to encourage students to join Latin and Latin Club and build our program every year. I can’t wait to see how amazing our program looks when I graduate.

Tell us about your lacrosse career.
I started playing in kindergarten, and got on my first team in 2nd grade. After that, I loved it and began playing travel. Once I got into middle school I decided that if I got the opportunity to play it at the college level, I would. Going into my final year of high school lacrosse, I’ve been talking to a few coaches at some amazing schools across the country and I can’t wait to see what school I’ll call home.

What is a favorite accomplishment in lacrosse?
Getting my Varsity letter my Freshman season! Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I lost my final season in Middle School where I lost a lot of learning time in the transition of youth rules to High School rules, but the moment preseason began and going into tryouts, every moment was a learning opportunity. So by our banquet, I held my Varsity Letter in lacrosse!

What is your cheer team like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
Our team is very bonded and has a good mix of experience levels. We have a lot of fun together and work well in our stunt groups. I fit in because I’m passionate about cheer and love bringing the energy! I believe I stand out because I have different levels of experience in stunting and competition.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
In the fall of my junior year, our football cheer team hosted a youth clinic and I met a 3rd grade student and was assigned to be her sideline buddy, she was so excited and ready. It made me remember when I was in 3rd grade and being so excited to cheer with the Varsity cheerleaders.

Tell us about pageant life and what you have learned about yourself in the process.
I’m competing in my second pageant in October of 2023, I’m so excited to be involved in this amazing organization! In my first pageant I didn’t feel confident on stage and I was lost in what to do to express myself to the judges. After meeting with a coach and learning how to become myself and not anyone else in my interview, I feel so much more prepared and confident in my stage presence and myself.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Either shopping or snuggling up with my dog watching movies!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
In September of 2023, I’ll be rocking the runway at New York Fashion Week! This has been a crazy dream of mine since I was little and it’s coming to life!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Your passions will drive you. Always find a way to keep your passions in your daily routine.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be serving my country in a branch of the United States Armed Forces. Hopefully by being an alumni of the United States Naval Academy or another Service Academy.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Going to antique stores! I love seeing vintage bags and clothes and looking through old books. Each piece has a story and it’s so fun to think of what its future will be.

Jon-Ford Scott

9/1/2023

Picture

Jon-Ford Scott – Texas
Nomination by Mende Moore
Photography by Hayly Hext Photography
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jon-Ford Scott was born with a congenital heart defect, Transposition of the Great arteries which required open heart surgery at 5 days old. Second, he has a speech impediment "stuttering" which has been difficult throughout school. When told he couldn't play contact sports because of his heart, he picked up tennis and played Varsity Tennis through High School. When struggling with speech, he joined Theatre and was cast in every production the school offered, winning numerous awards, and qualifying for Nationals in Monologue Acting. Plus, he was actively involved in Speech and Debate qualifying for State in Prose Interpretation.

Picture
Photography by Hayly Hext Photography

What has growing up with a congenital heart defect helped you learn about yourself and the world around you?
Growing up with a heart defect makes me really grateful that I have the opportunities I do. I was given a second chance and I want to do all I can to live life to the fullest.

What do you wish others knew about stuttering?
I wish people knew that stuttering can’t be helped. You can’t “spit it out” or “just slow down”. I think that sometimes people automatically assume that people with a stutter aren’t as intelligent as they are. We want to be treated just like everyone else. Yes, sometimes it might take me a while to tell my story but let me tell it my way.

Tell us about your tennis career.
I started playing tennis in the 7th grade. The seventh grade is when tackle football and basketball started. I had played flag football throughout elementary but once it came time for tackle, I needed a new challenge. Tennis was it. I am now in college and don’t play competitively but I do play for fun whenever I get the chance.

What is the hardest part about learning/playing tennis?
Learning and playing tennis came easy for me. The struggle I had was learning to control my excitement, frustrations, and emotions on the court. I am a lefty, so my serve took a while to master as well.

What is your tennis team like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
When I made the Varsity team my freshman year I was the baby. The team was a tight knit group of older guys. They were all very serious and hardly smiled. They were just that competitive. Bus rides were a bore. After a few days they had taken me under their wings. I became the team leader of our chants, the cheer leader on sideline, and the singer and jokester on the bus rides. They quickly became my best friends and still are.

Picture
Photography by Hayly Hext Photography

What is a favorite accomplishment in tennis?

I received first team all-district in singles, and first team all-district in double my last year of playing. Another favorite time was when me and my doubles partner, James, qualified for Regionals and we were the underdogs.

What was your first production in Theatre and what role did you play?
The Wizard of Oz. I had the role of the Lion.

What has been your favorite production and role - and why?
My favorite production is Bob: A Life in Five Acts. I received the role of Bob and it was my first lead role. I know now that the director picked the play specifically for me and it just was so natural for me. I had so much fun with that role because I could play the character so well without really trying. I was Bob!

What are some of the awards you've won for acting?
Honorable Mention All- Star Cast, All-Star Cast, Best Actor, and Top Performer awards.

What monologue did you do to qualify for the Nationals in Monologue Acting and why did you pick it?
I picked a monologue from the play Defying Gravity in the role of CB Miller. It was a play based on philosophical journey of the space shuttle Challenger that blew apart shortly after liftoff. CB reads a letter to the deceased schoolteacher’s daughter admitting guilt for the explosion because he was the NASA astronaut that passed the shuttle for lift off. It was a very emotional piece, and I was able to express that when I performed it.

What has been your favorite topic to debate and why?
My favorite topic to debate was in Congress. I was able to freely argue with someone over something I believed in and I love it!

What is the most interesting thing you've learned in Speech and Debate?
The most interesting thing I have learned in Speech and Debate really has nothing to do with specific topics or debates I participated in. I found it really cool how many different competitions there were at each tournament and hard you must work to be successful. The amount of work and talent it takes is really underestimated.

Tell us about the State in Prose Interpretation and how you qualified.
I performed a piece called Love is Never Black or White. I was nervous because I was up against some tough competition. I knew I had to put all the emotion I could into that piece. I chose to use a heavy southern accent and thankfully for me, it worked.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have had some difficult times in my life but I don't choose to use them as an excuse. I have a confidence inside me and I choose to overcome rather than feel sorry for myself. Yes, I wanted to play football but because of my heart I couldn't. So, I picked up tennis and fell in love with it. Yes, I have a stutter and it was difficult sometimes when people laughed or I couldn't get the words out right, so I joined Theatre and Speech & Debate. What could be called a negative, became my calling.

What else would you like to talk about?
I love building people up and being part of a team. I have been told by my coaches that I am a natural leader. I will cheer for you louder than I will ever cheer for myself.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Science. I love it. I can read for hours about different theories and trivia. There is so much out there we have not even come close to learning and that really fascinates me. Did you know that it's impossible to burp in space?

How did you find your photographer, Hayly Hext Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My aunt made arrangements for Seniors pictures to be taken by Hayly. Hayly had taken my cousin's pictures and I liked her work a lot. We worked with my High School Theatre Directors so that I could take the photos on stage in the Theatre at school. I think that was my most favorite thing, being on stage having my picture taken where I felt most at home. It was really cool (except for the fact I had a hole in my sock).

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
At the lake. I love to water ski.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
College! I am studying Theatre in college now and have recently been cast in my first college production.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a people pleaser, although people may say that’s a bad thing, I am quick to help a friend out. If anyone comes to me with a problem, I do my best to help them fix it. I like to motivate people to be the best version of themselves and never give up on a dream!

What else would you like to talk about?
Kindness is key. Don’t let people walk all over you and stand your ground but also treat people nicely. You never know what someone is going through so do your best to be kind even when people are rude to you.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My future. I’ve always wanted to be a good mom. I want to raise kindhearted young children. I want to be the mom my kids can go to whenever they are in doubt or trouble. Many kids nowadays don’t get a proper influence from parents, and I aspire to be a mom who influences my kids in the best way possible.

How did you find your photographer, Beautiful Memories Photography By Aurora? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
She is my boyfriend's mom. She is easy to talk to and she wanted to do my senior pictures. She recently did my prom pictures as well. She is amazing at her work, and I look up to her in every way. I love how she makes it easy, not awkward. With all her clients she makes it a personal connection.

How did you get involved with Attic Treasures?
I needed hours for my clubs at school and I thought it would be a great way to help my local community. It is a store run by volunteers only and my mom loves shopping there because it’s a secondhand shop where everything is donated. They give scholarships to students at our local high school and love giving back to the community.

What specifically do you do with your time while volunteering there?
Sort shelves, assist customers, and any small tasks they need me to do. I love how active in the community they are and how I get to meet new people.

What have you learned about yourself in the process?
Buying things brand new doesn’t make you better than everyone else. I was scared for a long time thinking about how much I would get judged for wearing secondhand clothes. Honestly, I learned that I am me and I don’t have to listen to people who have negative views on how I live my life. Having expensive things doesn’t make you superior. What matters is the type of person you truly are.

What type of leader are you and what is your strongest leadership quality?
I’m an encourager. At my part time job, I am working towards a leadership position, and I have learned that encouraging others keeps the going. Sometimes people need a little push and words such as, “you’re doing great!” It helps them reassure themselves not to give up and their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. My best quality is being positive even when everything seems to go wrong. It creates a better atmosphere.

Why is a high GPA and high honors important to you?
I have always loved learning, I wanted to push myself because nothing is handed out in life, it is earned. Earning good grades takes effort, but I know that when I look back, I won’t regret not trying. I’ll go further in life as long as I keep trying.

What is the Beta Club and what do you do in it?
Beta club is an organization ran by students who excel academically and volunteer in their community and school. I do different things around my school such as hanging up positive posters and volunteering at attic treasures as my main way to give back. It’s the little things that can make a difference.

What is your favorite accomplishment in Beta Club?
Getting recognized as a good student. Beta club is an invite only organization and the fact that I was recognized for the good work I do made me feel good. While the recognition is not why I do it, it does feel good to know that people are watching.

What do you love most about being in the NHS?
I love that I’m surrounded by people that are willing to help others. People who put in the effort. I’ve made friends who excel in academics and I feel like I belong in a group who loves both learning and giving back.

What have you learned about the general public while working at your part time job?
Not everyone is going to be nice. Some people come in having a bad day and a bad attitude. While it may be difficult, continue smiling and asking “how was your day?” it could change a persons mindset for the rest of the day. You never know what others are going through so choose to be kind.

What do you love most about your church?
The people. I’ve met many people at church who have given me advice, made me smile when I felt like crying, and show me that I may not feel okay but God has a plan for me and he will guide me. I find joy in the little kids running around laughing and having the wiser people come up and give me hugs. Church is home for me.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
Honestly, we love having late night talks in the car while eating Sonic ice cream. We have mini dance parties jamming to our music one minute and the next we are in a deep sentimental conversation.

How would your friends describe you?
Crazy, I have a personality that shines once I get to know people. I love making people laugh and smile. I seem to always be willing to help. Even on my bad days I still choose to make people happy.

What is a favorite family vacation memory you will never forget?
The time we went to the beach and I found 172 shark teeth. I love sharks they are my favorite animals and the fact that I found that many in one day made me so happy. My whole family loves shark teeth hunting as a hobby and that day we all got to be together and do what we love.
