What do you wish people knew about stuttering?

I wish people understood that stuttering doesn't define me; it's just a part of who I am. It takes patience and kindness to communicate with me, and I hope others can see beyond the hesitations and appreciate the person behind the words.

How has stuttering helped you with your strengths?
Stuttering has made me a kinder and a more resilient person. It has given me a greater perspective on the value of communication and has allowed me to learn a very valuable lesson of never taking anything for granted.

How did you get involved with the National Stuttering Association?
I was doing some research about how to get further involved and share my story and that’s when I found the National Stuttering Association. At first, I started off small by simply attending one of their annual conferences. I had a really great time and met amazing people. The amazing experience I had at the National Stuttering Association contributed to my passion and desire to help individuals who stutter. The National Stuttering Association has completely changed my life, and that is something that I am forever grateful for.

What do you love about leading the Teen Advisory Council's workshops and zoom meetings?
I love leading monthly zoom meetings because it is a incredible way to connect with those who understand. It’s really cool getting to hear from a lot of people from so many different backgrounds.

What has been your favorite workshop to run and why?
My favorite workshop has been the “Stuttering and Mental Health” workshop because it sheds light on something so important that is oftentimes overlooked.

What do you do in your monthly zoom meetings?
In our sessions, we provide an open floor for girls to introduce themselves, share a fun fact or anything they'd like. Each meeting revolves around a different topic, creating dynamic discussions and fostering a sense of community. It's a safe space where every girl can be seen, heard, and connect with others who share similar experiences.

How would you describe your leadership style for these events?
I think of myself as a inclusive leader, one who makes sure that everyone’s voice is heard and no one feels left out. I try my best to spread a positive message of hope and sisterhood.

Tell us about the Sisters Who Stutter Committee & your endeavors as President.
As President I make it my number one priority to make sure everything runs smoothly. I also strive to keep the sisterhood strong. We created Sisters Who Stutter to provide a platform for girls to come together to share similar experiences from all areas and walks of life. So far it’s been really incredible, and we have girls from over 10 countries attending!

When did you start playing tennis and where are you at with it now?
I did competitive gymnastics for a long time, but when I was in seventh grade, I broke my arm. I was out of practice and couldn’t compete for many months. When I went back to the gym, nothing felt the same. Everything was harder, the girls weren’t the same, and I lost my passion. Later that year, my friend invited me to her tennis camp. From there I completely fell in love with the sport. Through tennis I’ve made some of my best friends with shared camaraderie.

What do you love most about the sport and how does it suit you?
I think that tennis suits me well because not only is it a team sport, it is an individual sport. It gives me the power to excel, develop sportsmanship, and create bonds that last. I love tennis because it is a lifetime sport, and a skill that I can use forever.

What is a favorite memory in this sport?
My favorite memory of playing tennis was when my team won the district championships. We had all worked so hard, and it was a really great moment where we all came together in unity.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Having a stutter has always been something that has given me a lot of shame and tested my courage. For the longest time is felt like I was carrying around a bag of bricks; I felt like no one understood me, and no one knew how hard it was for me to talk. Throughout the years, I’ve learned that whether I like it or not, my stutter is a lifelong character trait that I’ve accepted. If you would’ve told me three years ago that I would be on multiple national councils and inspiring others every day I would’ve not believed you. I was able to overcome my fear of stuttering by surrounding myself with people who lift me up.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My biggest advice for anyone struggling with something unique is to surround yourself with people who understand you and will be your biggest supporters. Even though it’s difficult at times, you are your best advocate. It is your responsibility to stand up for yourself and push for what is right.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I want to go to Brigham Young University and major in communication disorders and minor in early childhood development. My hope is to earn my MBA and to be a certified clinician at the American Institute for Stuttering. I want to be a speech therapist because speech therapy gave me a voice I never had, and that is something I will be forever thankful for.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love going on evening runs and being able to disconnect to reconnect. When I am running, I am able to think and reflect on my day.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I'm a pretty good dog groomer.

3 Things on your bucket list
Skydiving, have kids, and start a YouTube channel.

Who do you find inspiring?
Both of my grandmas inspire me every day. They have both been through obstacles that have made them stronger. They have been such an incredible role models to me in my life and have show me the true love of Christ.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my ability to overcome and make amends with the past is some thing that makes me stand out to others. I am able to use my unique perspective to influence people in my life. A lot of people ask me how I do everything that I do. It is very easy to take the compliment, but after thinking about that, I realized that serving others is what lifts me the most.

Sofia Kelly – Ohio
Nomination by Whitney Hall
Photography by Still Dancing Photography by Kaitlynn Hunker
Issue 77 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: I would like to nominate my daughter, Sofia Kelly. In my eyes she is an inspiration daily. Not only does she work hard in dance and practice 4-5 nights a week, but she strives in her academics as well and manages to keep straight A’s in all her classes. Her determination and pride in all that she does never goes unnoticed. She has the kindest heart and is always willing to help her family and friends. When someone is having a bad day, she doesn’t hesitate to support them and put a smile of their face. Her 3 younger siblings absolutely love her, watch everything she does, follow her around, and Sofia knows they look up to her so she makes sure to be the best example for them.

Tell us about your dance career.

I started dancing when I was 4 years old, during that time and for a few years I was at a different studio. My mom said I would always be dancing around at home and when she asked if I wanted to go to dance classes, I got so excited, and she signed me up. I started in recreational classes and did that for one season. After that season I knew I wanted to try out for the competitive team and have been competing ever since! Since then, I have switched studios to my current one, MPower Dance Company, where everyone welcomes me with open arms. I have grown so much as a dancer and went from competing in two dances to now six.

What dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
The dances I study are lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, open, and ballet. My favorite dance is hip hop because I love the moves we learn and the sass that you put into it.

What is the hardest thing about dance, vs the most rewarding?
The hardest thing about dance is having to remember the dances and being able to keep up with the moves. The most rewarding part is when we clean everyone up and complete our routines, then seeing all our hard work come together as a team and compete.

What do you wish others knew about dancers/dancing?
What I wish others knew about dancing is that competitive dancing is more than just turns and leaps. It comes with hard work, practice, and making sure you are doing the proper technique. You have to take time to stretch and learn the correct positions, that’s why ballet is the most important class out of all of them. At the end of the day what you learn in ballet ties into all the other genres of dance.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you’ve learned?
My favorite class this year in school is math, like dance it is challenging, and I like working hard until I figure out the answer. The most interesting thing I have learned this year in math is percentages. For example, when I go shopping, I can now figure out what 20% off a shirt or a pair of jeans is.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I am the oldest child on both my mom and dad’s side. Although my parents are not together, they have both married and I am blessed to have an amazing bonus mom and bonus dad. They all get along and coparent well together. My bonus mom and mom are best of friends and were even in each other’s wedding! I have a younger half-brother and sister at my moms and a younger half-brother at my dad’s.

What is your favorite thing to do with your younger siblings?
My favorite thing to do with my younger siblings is play with them and do activities like building things, painting, or play dress up. I love making them laugh.

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
My friend group and I are very close and all my best friends I dance with. We all go to different schools and will wake up early together to facetime while we get ready and end the call by doing an outfit check! We also enjoy making Tik Toks, having sleepovers, and going shopping.

What is a favorite memory with your friends?
My favorite memory with my friends is when we went to the movies to see Mean Girls, and afterwards we went shopping and had a sleepover.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me at home cleaning my room because I like to be organized, jumping on my trampoline, or in the basement working out and practicing dances.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Our first competition of this season is coming up in a couple of weeks! I am so excited to show my family all the dances we have been working hard on. Fun fact: they don’t get to see any of my dances until the first competition!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
My back handspring is probably the hardest things I have accomplished. I just kept practicing and making sure my form and technique was correct, so I didn’t hurt myself.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself getting my drivers license, continuing dance, and getting into an AP Literature class.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love Go Karting! I have also played soccer and T-Ball in the past.

3 Things on your bucket list
• Visit New York City and Hawaii
• Become an influencer and start a YouTube Channel
• Go on a cruise.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my friends, mom, and dance teachers inspiring, they all work hard every day in their own way. Something else that inspires me is my song for my solo this year, Dancing on The Waves by Bethel Music feat. We The Kingdom | Peace.

Lainey Rarick

Lainey Rarick – Tennessee
Nomination & Photography by Melody Dawkins
Issue 77 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lainey Rarick exudes strong leadership skills in her devotion to Christianity, her academics, her social endeavors, and within her family. She maintains lasting friendships with support and love, and is always there when you need her. Lainey actively engages in many organizations such as Lights Camera Fashion, the worship team at Warren Community Church, and National Honors Society. She utilizes her role in these organizations to spread God’s word, raise money for her community, further her academic excellence, and support peers. Without Lainey, the world would be less bright, as her inspirations ignite a passion in the people around her.
Photography by Melody Dawkins

Tell us about your Christianity and why it is important to you?

My faith stems from how different my life would be without God. Without him, I would constantly be anxious, angry, depressed, and find only happiness in materialistic things that will not last. With him, I have constant peace and reassurance in my future on earth and after death, allowing me to be joyful everyday. I would be a completely different person without God, but I am so thankful that that’s not the case here. Christianity is a religion where I find unconditional love and joy that lasts through any hardship. Following God means I do not have to miserable all of my life, but be joyous all throughout life.

What do you love most about your church?
The community within Warren Community Church is unlike any other. The people are truly like family to me, and they welcome anyone who walks through our doors. My church has a heart for serving and it inspires me everyday to serve in different organizations around my community. I love that my church is less of a community, but more of a family where we are there for our brothers and sisters in Christ during good and bad times.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you’ve learned?
My favorite class this year would definitely have to be Performing Arts. The people in the class are my family and I love working alongside them everyday. Each and every one of them is a true inspiration, but my teacher, who builds our program with love and compassion, is definitely the heart of our family and the person who we inspire to be the most. One interesting thing I have learned this year is how lengthy the novel, “Frankenstein,” is.

What social endeavor do you participate in the most and why?
I go to the Bellevue’s youth group on Wednesday nights every week, so I can surround myself in God fearing people who inspire my love for the Lord. I like going to different churches and being able to meet new people, but also to experience the way different churches navigate the word, so I can expand on my knowledge of it.

Tells us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I come from a family of four, where the house is divided between masculinity and femininity. I like to say I am most like my mom, but look more like my dad. My mom, Christie, is one of the most hardworking and outgoing people I have ever seen. Her love for others and Christ shines through everything she does and she inspires me daily to be the bigger person in every situation. My dad, Dwayne, is the leader of our family and guides us to be a Christ centered. We share the same dry humor, which sometimes gets out of hand when we start bashing each other, but it is out of love. He never fails to protect and guide me and continuously shows me everyday that I am more than enough. I have one sibling, Andrew, who overtime has become one of my favorite people. Growing up we never got along, but now I do not know what I would do without his humor and listening ear. Everyone in my family has a role in making me the person I am today.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Every Christmas, my aunt and cousins come down to my grandmother’s house where we have a crab boil. The is prepared and then we gather around a large table in my Grandmother’s dining room, where we have community with each other while eating AMAZING food. I think this is what makes my family so unique and I love telling people about our nontraditional tradition.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
My friends and I love eating at the local Mexican restaurant where we catch up on life, relationships, and everything that us teenage girls talk about. We also enjoy driving around and screaming to the music during a cool evening. Recently, I have acquired a love for bible study dates with my friends, where we dive into God’s word and discuss our thoughts and feelings about it and how it relates with our young lives.

What is a favorite memory with your friends you know you will never forget?
One evening, two of my friends and I went and bought places where we wrote out deep feelings on life and situations that we had experienced, then we drove to an abandoned bridge and smashed the plates on the ground. Being able to let go of past relationships and feelings with my closest friends was definitely something I will remember forever. It was a very therapeutic night that will definitely be used again in the future.

What is Lights Camera Fashion and what do you do in it?
Lights, Camera, Fashion is a modeling event that raises money for St. Jude through 50 teenage models. The money goes towards families within St. Jude, so they never have to see a single hospital bill during their Childs treatment. The models are chosen and over the coarse of 6 months, they raise money for St. Jude using fundraises and donations. The models do a fashion show and photoshoot with My Best Friend Jenna dresses and get a custom dress made by the famous, Johnathan Kayne. The event is brought on by the bridal and prom dress company called, My Best Friend Jenna. The organization as a whole is a wonderful inspiration to young girls and shows them that they can make a difference in a multitude of lives, when they put themselves out in the world. It allows the girls to experience something bigger than themselves and they see the impact of their handwork right before their own eyes.

What has been your favorite service project within the NHS?
I have loved selling crushes every February in my school to raise money the Carl Perkins Center. The Carl Perkins Center’s mission is to provide support to families in preventing and dealing with child abuse in West Tennessee and to help both parents and children meet the practical needs of preserving and improving the quality of family life. This year we raised over 400 dollars.

What leadership opportunities have you had within your endeavors?
I lead a high school girls bible study every Wednesday, where I am able to lead friends and peers to the Lord and create a safe place for girls in my school to talk about their hardships, but also praises. I am Vice President of NHS, Secretary of Student Government, Secretary of Mu Alpha Theta, Secretary of Interact Club and through these clubs I am spread my message of the gospel within my school through my actions. I am also honored to be on the worship and praise team at my church, Warren Community Church, where I use my gifts for God’s glory to lead my church in worship and I am surrounded by people praising the Lord. I was also captain of my High School women’s soccer team.

How would describe your leadership style?
I try to lead by example through my experiences within life, so others can relate to what I have been through in order for them to feel an impact. Unfortunately, sometimes we need to see a miracle in order to believe in more miracles. My goal is to be a christian role model to young people and people my age all around the world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover the many organizations and activities that I am a part of in my community. Along with National Honors Society, I am also a part of Mu Alpha Theta, Student Government, Pep Club, Fayette Christian Athletes, Drama Club, Soccer and have performed as a lead role in plays such as Frozen Jr., The Addams Family, High School Musical, and more. I am so grateful that many look to me for advice, love, and God’s grace and that I have been provided the opportunity to build myself as a leader in my community

What else would you like to talk about?
I would love to discuss my aspirations for the future. I want to go to college at an SEC school and pursue a degree in international business so that I may travel around the world, utilizing my leadership and Christian missionary to change the lives of many around me. I intend to become a leader in any path I choose and hope to inspire success in myself and those around me throughout my life. I am excited for what the future holds.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel the most passionate about my immense and all-encompassing love for God, my savior. I am so grateful to have grown up in a community that praises and worships him, and allows me to be a part of his worship alongside them. Everything I love - school, my friends, family, hobbies - is done through him. I have been a member of performing arts for four years, and between the plays I have starred in and my church worship group, God has always been the forefront.

How did you find your photographer, Melody Dawkins? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer is my future sister-in-law and has been a part of our family for over four years now. I am so grateful to have her as a part of my life and consider her one of my close friends. We have done photo shoots together since I was in eighth grade, and this one was extra special, as it was my senior shoot. I am so blessed that she was so excited to share this experience with me. We had such a great time filled with laughter and love. My favorite part was the collaboration and easy-going atmosphere.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me at the Bible museum or in South Carolina at the pretty place chapel.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am attending Mississippi State University in the fall where I will get to dive deeper within my identity and see all different walks of life. I will also get to study international business, where I can focus on traveling and seeing different countries. I am excited to experience something completely new and see how God changes my life through it.

Gianna Nero – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by Chelsea Jo Bishop
Issue 77 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Gianna is inspiring to me because she is an all around incredible human, and truly beautiful inside and out. She has to juggle school, work, being the captain of her cheer team, art projects (as she is also an extraordinary artist!) and does so with such poise and grace. Her style is so unique and sophisticated; you'd never guess she is only 17. She wanted artsy, urban vibes for her senior session, so her awesome mom drove us around Cincinnati to find the coolest places. She absolutely killed it and was such a joy to work with.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am varsity cheer captain and game day captain at my high school for 2022-2024.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am an AP drawing student, and will be attending NKU for radiology.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk about music forever. My favorite band is Led Zeppelin, the way they play every song with passion is truly beautiful. Everything they produced was a different genre, they did it all!

How did you find your photographer, Chelsea Jo Bishop? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer is my best friends step mom, I knew she was amazing at art and photography so I had no doubts choosing her! She was attentive and kind the whole shoot and made sure I looked my best. I loved how open she was with my ideas and what I wanted. Choosing her to take my senior photos was the best choice for me.

Charlee Reid – Alabama
Nomination by Candace Reid
Photography by Angela Hill Photography
Issue 77 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Charlee Reid, the 2024 Miss Appalachian Valley’s Teen in Alabama and part of the Miss America’s Teen Opportunity , is truly inspiring. As the founder of Charlee’s Angels: Breaking the Barriers of Autism in honor of her brother, she bridges the gap between neurodivergent and neurotypical teens, breaking the stigma around autism. Through initiatives like A League of Their Own and as a co-founder of The Connect Club, she promotes inclusivity. Charlee educates young minds about autism in schools, volunteers with organizations like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Mitchell’s Place—a school for autistic kids. Her passion for making a difference and creating connections embodies hope. As she says, "All humans crave relationship, connection, and love." Charlee truly embodies the spirit of making a difference.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am dedicated to inspiring others by breaking the stigma around autism and creating meaningful connections among my peers. In a world dominated by technology, it's crucial to combat disconnection, which is why I make a daily effort to reach out. Whether it's volunteering at a local dance studio, being a buddy at Night to Shine, or raising funds for the autistic community, my commitment remains unwavering. I aspire to make a difference and inspire others to join me on this journey through my determination and unwavering commitment. Together, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate world.

What else would you like to talk about?
I'm excited to discuss my new social media campaign, Charlee's Heart 2 Heart, which is part of the "Go Red for Women" movement with The American Heart Association through the Miss America Opportunity. Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women, accounting for 1 in 3 fatalities each year? With "Charlee's Heart 2 Heart," I aim to share practical tips for affordable, nutritious meals, promote achievable exercise routines, emphasize the importance of early heart screenings, and encourage CPR certification with the American Heart Association. Together, we can make a difference in women's heart health.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
There are countless topics that I could talk about endlessly. As you can see, I am incredibly passionate about my service initiative, Charlee's Angels. Another topic close to my heart is the importance of getting more teens involved in their communities as mentors or volunteers. By actively participating in my own community and reaching out to neighboring communities, I have not only experienced personal growth but also had the privilege of meeting incredible individuals who have positively impacted my life. I strongly believe that there should be more opportunities and outreach programs to encourage my peers to get involved and provide support for them along the way.

How did you find your photographer, Angela Hill Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to compete in the local prelim Miss Appalachian Valley's Teen, which is a part of the Miss America's Teen program. To my surprise and delight, I not only won my local title to compete at Miss Alabama's Teen, but I also received an amazing prize package. One of my sponsors, Angela Hill Photography, generously provided a photography session. It has been an absolute blessing because not only is Miss Angela an incredible photographer, but she is also one of the kindest individuals you will ever meet. I've had so much fun in her studio with my Rising Stars. I highly recommend Angela because she will exceed your expectations.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you have learned?

My favorite class is Anatomy & Physiology. My favorite part of the class is learning about bones and how they work.

What are your secrets for staying on top of everything when you have so much going on?
Organization. As a student, athlete, and teenager, life definitely throws you curve balls when you’re least expecting it. I always put my studies first, because having good grades is very important to me. Athletics is a close second, along with working part time. Once my priorities are in line, then I can enjoy any free time I have left.

What sports do you play and which is your favorite? Why?
I only play volleyball, so of course it is my favorite. I love this sport because I love the people I get to play with on the court and I enjoy building new friendships throughout the season.

Tell us about one of your teams and a favorite memory with them.
Freshman year of volleyball was definitely my favorite. My sister was a senior so playing with her was a lot of fun. My favorite memory was our sectional dinner party because the food was delicious.

What is your favorite accomplishment in a sport you play?
My favorite accomplishment was becoming the libero my sophomore year. A libero is a defensive specialist who only plays the back row of the court.

Tell us more about Marley Mae and what you like to do together.
Marley Mae is my 6 year old GoldenDoodle. When I was in 6th grade, we decided to put Marley into dog 4-H and we bonded tremendously over that. She loves to go for car rides, play ball and get a pup cup. She will forever be my best friend.

What is your Family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My family is amazing! I am the youngest of two with 4 dogs as well. I feel like I fit perfectly in the middle. I am a lot like my dad, as I am more of a country girl compared to my mom & sister. Along with helping my dad on the farm, I will always be the one you find driving the gator & playing in the mud, instead of shopping.

What is a favorite family tradition that you hope never ends?
One of my favorite traditions with my family is going to the Christmas Eve Church Service and singing Christmas carols. We also go and look at Christmas lights after the church service.

What book have you read recently that you would recommend to another teen?
One of the last books that I read was called Archer’s Voice and it was one of the best romance books I have ever read.

What book would you change the ending to, and what would you like to change it to?
I would choose the book If He Had Been With Me and I would change the ending to where one of the main characters Finny does not pass away. I would like the ending to be happy and fun instead of sad.

She has been on competitive dance teams for 11 years, her high school cheerleading team for 2 years and her high school dance company for 3 years. Her dedication and ability to balance both dance and cheerleading along with academics showcase her commitment to discipline, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. Her ability to overcome challenges with grace and pursue her goals inspires those around her.
Photography by Angie Read Photography
What do you love most about dance, and why are you so dedicated to the sport?
What I love most about dance is that I love how I can express what I’m feeling through the art and move with the music. I am dedicated to dance because I have danced since I was 4 years old and have put so much training and time into my skill which has paid off through many awards and recognitions.

What types of dance do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
I study contemporary, jazz, tap, hip hop, ballroom, lyrical, and ballet. My favorite would be contemporary because it has a lot of room for improvisational movements that can be connected to the feelings in a song. It tells a stronger story which I love expressing.

If you could be on any dance tv show, which one would it be? What would you dance to, wear, style of dance - all the details!
I would be on World of Dance. I love the judges and I’m obsessed with the show itself. I would do a contemporary piece and dance to a song by Dermot Kennedy. I love dancing to his voice and his songs have a strong meaning to them. I would definitely wear something that makes me stand out from the other contestants and flows with the movements.

What are you working on achieving next in dance?
I am working on getting accepted into a college of dance for their BFA program. I want to work on gaining more knowledge and background history of this art form. I am the type of person who wants to know more and more about something I’m interested in and dance is my passion.

Tell us about your cheer team and what you love most about it.
I love my cheer teammates. I love how close we have gotten throughout the years and I love cheering with them at all the games. We always have a blast. I also love the strong connection we made as a team.
What is a major accomplishment you've had with cheer?
The major accomplishment I made as a cheerleader was becoming a flyer. I started off not knowing how to do the simplest move to now completing one of the hardest stunts. I pushed myself to not give up and stayed after practice for several days with my team where I kept trying until I got it. With my team’s motivation I am now a confident flyer for my squad.

What is a favorite memory with your school dance company?
My favorite memory with my school dance company is definitely having field trips to take master classes at different universities. I love meeting new people in the dance industry, learning new techniques and having new experiences.

What has your favorite national dance company competition been and why?
The favorite time I’ve had with the national dance company I was in was my very first year in the company. At that time I was super excited to have been chosen to be on this team. It was exciting going to different cities meeting new people and doing what I love, dance. Performing with this company over the years helped to improve my skills and being on stage was exhilarating.

What leadership opportunities have you had within cheer and dance?
During my years in cheer and dance I have had the opportunity to be a leader for my teams. In dance I have assisted in choreographing dances for the fall and spring shows for different lower level dance classes. For cheer I have worked with my squad developing new cheers for the games. Also during our annual cheer camp I lead demonstrations of cheers, dances, and chants for the young participants. As a senior in both my cheer and dance teams I try to be a role model for those younger than me to look up to as an example of a positive person.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would describe my leadership style as collaborative and supportive. It is important for me to make sure my team is comfortable sharing their ideas and opinions when we face problems we need to solve or performances we need to accomplish.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a hardworking and joyful person. I have a very positive personality and believe in being encouraging and supportive to those around me.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am adventurous and love trying new things. I also enjoy exploring the world around me.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about dance. I have been dancing since I was 4 years old and I still enjoy dancing at age 17. Dance is my life and I don't know who I am without it. The hard work and dedication I have put into dance has made me a more responsible person.

How did you find your photographer, Angie Read Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I learned of my photographer through friends who used her for their senior pictures. I've had a great experience with my photographer. She puts a lot of thought into the shoots and allows me to give my opinions on poses and outfits. I love the locations she picks for the photo shoots and how easy it is to work with her.

What do you love most about being on her Power Team?
I love when I get together with all the other girls on the power team because it is an opportunity for me to create new friendships. On this team there are different occasions we volunteer in the community which is a great chance for me to give back to others. This is also a team that helps girls build their self confidence which helps me be a better person and a role model to others.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day you would definitely find me at the mall. I love shopping for new clothes. I can spend hours in the mall even if I do not buy anything. I am a fashionista and I love seeing all the new and different fashion styles I may want to try out. Being in the mall makes me feel so free because I am in my element.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I'm super excited about graduating high school and starting my college career. It is a little scary but exciting at the same time. I am eagerly anticipating experiencing the full college life like going to football games, basketball games, joining a sorority and more. Even though I will miss high school and my friends, I’m so excited for college.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Something that could be considered inspiring about me that my nomination didn’t cover is my passion for weightlifting. I have been consistently weightlifting for 3 years now and it is one of the most empowering and rewarding things I've ever done. Being a woman in the gym is extremely intimidating and I believe that fact is one of the reasons I am so passionate about it. Because I am passionate about the subject, I always do my best to teach other women about weightlifting and how beneficial it is for our bodies.

What else would you like to talk about?
A topic I’m particularly vocal about is mental health. Mental health is often overlooked and undermined when it’s a serious issue and needs to be discussed. Today we have certain resources that make it much easier to receive help, yet there’s still a strong presence of judgment. When individuals are struggling with their mental state, the worst thing for them to have to experience is judgment. Judgment can lead to the struggling individual becoming more withdrawn, making it much more difficult to assist them. As a society, we need to be more understanding and accepting of people struggling mentally.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel passionate about and could talk about the effects of social media on our minds forever. Although I believe that social media can be an incredible tool for many different things, there is no doubt that social media has a negative effect on people’s overall mental well-being. Social media puts unrealistic expectations into the minds of many individuals and causes a sense of insecurity. A way we could combat that is to be authentic and create a positive community online.

How did you find your photographer, Dave Volpone Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer, Dave Volpone Photography, through his previous clients and his page. I was told by many people that he is one of the best photographers in the area and I couldn’t agree with that statement more. I loved everything about our session, specifically how he communicated with me to ensure my satisfaction with my photos. He truly worked hard to capture not only my appearance but also my personality.

What is your favorite part of being a Key Club member?
My favorite part of being a Key Club member is being a small part of a much larger organization that is dedicated to bettering the lives of others. My favorite event that I take part in is the American Red Cross blood drive because the American Red Cross is crucial in the process of healing others. I love that Key Club is so productive in making a change.

What leadership roles have you had within this organization?
Although I do not hold a title in the club, I am very active in recruiting other members and encouraging others to participate in our events. We often have bake sales and I enjoy running those as well as providing goods to sell.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is dedication. Dedication is my strongest leadership quality because I have a strong desire to be successful, especially when it comes to projects. I enjoy focusing on a specific goal and doing everything in my power to achieve it. I hope that my dedication is inspirational to others.

What do you like to do with the elderly?
My favorite thing to do with the elderly is have fun, I do this through games and having engaging conversations. My job title is “housekeeper” but my description is being a homemaker by ensuring the comfort, safety, and happiness of my residents. There truly is nothing in this world that is more enjoyable than spending time with my residents and knowing that I make a positive difference in their lives. I am particularly fond of playing bingo with them because I get to see the excitement on their faces.

What have you learned about yourself working with them?
I have learned some of the most valuable lessons in life through working with my residents, but my favorite thing I've learned is that God is calling me to make helping others a huge part of my life. I’ve always enjoyed helping others but the true eye-opener for me is how appreciative my residents are of me. I feel most fulfilled when I help others and I am beyond grateful that my residents have helped me realize that.

What is your favorite class at school this year and what is the most interesting thing you’ve learned?
My favorite class at school this year is Contemporary World Issues because I believe that it is important to learn about issues within the world. I believe that it’s important to learn about worldly issues because not only can we help other countries, but we can also better our own country by learning from others. Something interesting that we’ve learned about is the child slave labor issues in 3rd world countries because many popular brands in America use goods created unethically by children. Realizing how many American brands use child sweatshops was shocking and motivated me to boycott many brands.

How would you like your non-profit to help others?
I would like my non-profit organization to help feed the hungry. I would want my non-profit to be based on feeding the hungry because not only is food vital for survival, it is also important for your morale. Through food I would like to heal others physically and mentally.

Where is your favorite place you’ve traveled and why?
My favorite place that I’ve traveled to is Scotland because I learned many things and enjoyed meeting new people. I toured many castles and shopped in local stores to learn more about the country and it’s people. I felt very welcomed and made memories that will last a lifetime.

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would travel to Italy because I love the culture and want to experience it first hand. I also would love to bring my mother with me because she has always dreamt of traveling to Italy and I want to fulfill that dream for her. My mother is one of my biggest inspirations in life and I cannot thank her enough for encouraging me to experience the world.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day, you would find me at work because I love my job. I love my job because of my residents and how much joy they bring me. My favorite way to spend my time is with them hearing all of their stories and advice.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
My next step in life is becoming a certified personal trainer. I am super excited about this because I can’t wait to teach others about weightlifting and helping people improve their lives through fitness. This has been a dream of mine for years now and it is surreal to making this dream a reality.

What do you love most about mentoring younger children?

Mentoring younger children is rewarding because it makes me feel like I am making an impact. When I was younger, the mentors I had made a lifelong impact on me. I like showing children that there is someone who cares about them, building their confidence and showing them that they matter. I like working with the Miss Arizona Princesses and teaching them what it means to be a titleholder, the importance of volunteering and serving our community. I love the personal reaction I receive from younger children as they realize the joy and pride that comes from volunteering.

What do you do with them specifically?
I lead groups of children in volunteering activities that I develop and implement. I actively encourage younger children to volunteer and serve our community. I have spoken to children about the importance of mentorship, inner beauty, positive self talk, self worth, volunteerism, kindness, assertiveness skills, and dealing with negative peer pressure. I also read books to children with inspirational themes such as the importance of empathy, gratitude and helping others.

What have you learned through working with children?
I have learned that even the smallest interactions can make a big difference. I am learning that every little thing in life can be meaningful, if you make it. I have learned from kids that there is so much beauty to be found all around us.

How would you describe your leadership style?
As a leader, I am a listener. I feel like when it comes to being a good leader, you must learn to listen to the people you are leading. I have learned through dance that even if you are put into a leadership role it still has to be a collaborative endeavor because you are not the only one dancing. You have to take into account the needs of everyone in order to be successful. I believe this can be applied to any group work environment.

What is your best leadership quality?
I have empathy for others and am able to be transparent which is important in being a good leader. I had a child open up about feeling overwhelmed with her extracurricular activities. I was able to talk about my own personal experiences and how I have handled it. I have had to learn to balance all of my own extracurricular activities for a large part of my life. In any situation, it is important that the other person feels heard and that they are not alone in how they are feeling.

Tell us more about your pageant career. When did you get started and why?
I started in the Miss Arizona Scholarship Organization Princess Program when I was 8 years old. I was at a community event and saw some girls and young women with crowns and sashes on and was interested in speaking to them. They told me and my Mom about the princess program. As a princess, I was able to volunteer with the titleholders. I have always loved being on stage and being a performer. Being a princess encouraged me to want to compete when I was old enough as another opportunity to perform and be on stage.

What was the hardest part about getting your foot in the door?
I did not have any difficulty getting started competing in the Miss Arizona Scholarship Organization. I had a lot of support from the titleholders that had known me since I was a princess when I first started competing and have always had a lot of people rooting for me. I had watched these titleholders compete for years and now was able to be on stage with them. I put pressure on myself to prove myself since I was now switching positions and was now on stage with them. Shortly after my initial competition, my comfort and confidence began to grow.

What is a rewarding experience that you will treasure forever?
I will always treasure the year at the Miss Arizona Scholarship Organization competition as Miss Phoenix’s Teen 2022 when I achieved the top 3 for the first time for teen Quality of Life, which describes your community service initiative. In the past, I had seen so many other titleholders with really good community service initiatives achieve the top 3 for Quality of Life. I felt like all the hard work I was doing with my community service initiative was being recognized. It was validating and amazing to feel like what I care about was deemed important by others.

How has this helped to shape your future?
I have significantly less stress about what I am going to do after I graduate from high school. I have earned scholarships through the Miss Arizona Scholarship Organization. Being involved in pageantry has helped me improve my public speaking, communication skills, interview skills, poise, confidence, and stage presence. I feel confident in public speaking situations such as school presentations and will feel confident and more prepared for future job interviews.

What advice would you give to anyone considering entering a pageant?
I would tell them to try competing and go into it with an open mind, open heart, without any fear of failure. Regardless of the outcome, you are gaining amazing life skills, memories, friendships and an experience you will take with you for the rest of your life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I was mentored as a princess in the Miss Arizona Scholarship Organization so I want to mentor younger children and build their confidence. I want to continue the legacy of mentorship that I experienced. I lead groups of children in volunteer activities. We have held annual toy drives, decorated cards and ornaments for Christmas trees which we donated to the Phoenix Children's Hospital. We have volunteered together at Feed My Starving Children, our local animal shelter and sanctuary. I believe that volunteering is a great way to give back to others and it also helps to build confidence in ourselves.

What else would you like to talk about?
I was the first and only freshman to ever audition and earn a spot on my high school Dance Company. I am a dance company member, Choreographer, Historian and Social Media Manager. I have been involved in musical theater and have been Student Council President supporting the entire student body. I have studied graphic design for two years in high school and am certified in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Visual Design. I am a competitive graphic designer for Skills USA. I have been a Pageant Emcee for the Miss Valley of the Sun Scholarship Organization local pageant.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am professionally trained in ballet, lyrical and contemporary dance and have been dancing since the age of 3. I dance on my dance team as well as my spare time. Our Dance Company travels to the middle schools where we teach master classes. We also have college dance instructors come to our school to teach master classes to us. We have field trips to Ballet Arizona to see several productions. I have performed in the Nutcracker throughout the years with Arizona Youth Ballet. To dance is a blessing and gives me an indescribable feeling of joy and peacefulness

How did you find your photographer, Jenn Cady Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Jenn Cady Photography is the official sponsor for the Miss Arizona Scholarship Organization. Jenn is from South Carolina and travels to Arizona a few times per year to provide photography services for Miss Arizona local and state titleholders. She works with Amanda Victoria Beauty who provides hair and make up services to the titleholders for the photoshoot. We have utilized her photography services whenever she comes to Arizona. Jenn is kind, thoughtful, energetic, enthusiastic, detail oriented and talented. I love what a great experience I have each time I am photographed by Jenn and her photos are absolutely beautiful.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I could envision a dream day with nothing to do and plenty of time, I would start the day by going to the gym and practicing tumbling. I would spend time traveling and specifically go to Italy and walk around and take pictures with my sister. I would find a dance studio and dance. I would go to dinner and go to bed.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
The state competition for Miss Arizona/ Miss Arizona’s Teen is in June 2024. I am excited because every year it is my favorite part of my summer. I get to spend the whole week rehearsing and doing fun events. It is the part where you get to see all of your hard work pay off. I love competing and the adrenaline rush from competing. I love the sisterhood that we develop as titleholders and spending the week with my sisters.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't be fearful of rejections. Take every experience as a learning experience and welcome new challenges. Every new experience is an opportunity for personal growth.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
It is difficult to predict the future as I didn’t know I would be here in five years. More than likely, I would have graduated from college or would be in college preparing to graduate from college.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I like to watch cartoons! Gravity Falls will always be my favorite cartoon. I like the simplicity of cartoons which have a good plot and are entertaining. They are fun, relaxing and comforting.

3 Things on your bucket list
Go to Italy, get another cat, get better at handstand walks

What has been your favorite leadership opportunity and why?
My favorite leadership opportunity by far has been being the captain of the girls varsity soccer team for 2 years. I have made some of my best friends on the field and I am honored to have had the opportunity to lead them.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would describe my leadership style as a team player. I strive to have everyone involved and believe that everyone's opinions and ideas matter. I take pride in delegating my duties to others and encouraging others to flourish and step out of their comfort zone.

Tell us more about your soccer career.
I started playing soccer around age 4, really whenever I started walking. My dad was always a collegiate soccer coach while I was growing up, so there was no question that I would play. As I grew older my love for the sport grew because of all of the lessons I learned and friends I made. Soccer helped build my leadership skills and confidence as an athlete and person.

What position do you play and why does it suit you?
I play right outside back in the defense. This position fits me because I can see the full field and can lead from the back. I am also a fast athlete and can keep up with speedy wing players. I also have a strong leg and can send balls into the box from far out.
How do you balance all of your activities and what is your drive to excel at all?
I balance my activities by using my planner and focusing on staying ahead. I have self- motivation and self-determination to make others around me proud. I thrive on academic validation and it makes me so proud knowing that my hard work pays off.
How did you find your senior photographer, Amber Co Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through instagram. I absolutely loved my experience with Amber. I loved that she made me feel comfortable in front of the camera and she did an amazing job capturing my true personality in all of my pictures.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am the President of the Lycoming County Youth Development Task Force. This organization finds ways to better teens mental and physical health. This organization involves community service and involvement to help inspire teens to better themselves.

What are your roles and responsibilities as president?
As president of the Youth Development Task Force I am in charge of leading our monthly meetings. This is a county wide organization that involves 9 different schools. I am in charge of relaying information to everyone involved, and making sure things get done.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I hope to leave behind a legacy of inspiration to lead. My main focus when I was elected president was to delegate my role. I wanted everyone to feel heard and to feel just as important as I did. I hope when I leave others step out of their comfort zone and choose to lead, just as I did.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Physical Therapy is something I feel passionate about. I tore my ACL at age 14 and it took 13 long months to recover. Now I am seeking a career in Physical Therapy, so that I can be surrounded by my love for helping others and build my knowledge on the human body.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am beyond excited to be furthering my education at Lock Haven University on a 3+3 pre physical therapy track. As one of only 5 freshmen selected for this program, I am honored to have this opportunity.

Tell us about your dance career.
I’ve been dancing since I was in first grade. It’s my senior year and i’m still dancing and loving it everyday!

What types of dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
I study ballet, lyrical, modern, jazz, and hiphop. My favorite is lyrical because I can show most emotion in it.

What do you wish others knew about dancers/dancing?
I want others to know that even if you don’t think you’re a great dancer you should still give it a try. It’s not always just about how good you are.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Kids inspire me. I spent a lot of my life with depression. I started nannying for a family about two years ago and their kids have completely changed my life. They brought my life into a whole different perspective and showed me that it’s okay to be happy and happiness will always come your way. I’m excited to start my career in education to show kids that they are never alone.

What are your favorite things to do with the kids?
Definitely going outside and coloring. It’s their favorite thing to do, and I love seeing the smiles on their faces.

What are your career goals in education?
I want to become a kindergarten teacher!

What advice do you have to others going through depression?
Even though it seems like the world is ending right now things do get better. Give it time and things will change. There would be no flowers with no rain!

What else would you like to talk about?
Always make sure to be kind to the people around you. There were so many bullies that i’ve came across in my seventeen years of living that have destroyed my self esteem. Remember you never know what someone else is going through. Don’t be the reason for someone’s sadness.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk about dancing forever. Dancing has been apart of my life for twelve years. It’s a great way to express your feelings in a healthy way. When I needed an escape I headed to the dance floor.

How did you find your senior photographer, L. Welsh Photography LLC? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer due to my friend using her in the past. She is lovely and gave me a great experience. My photography gave me a safe and comfortable place to be myself.

What has been the best part of being a senior this year?
Becoming closer to my future!

What is your family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I would have to say college!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
My depression. I overcame it with time and turning towards God.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Keep your head high and don’t listen to the people who think you can’t do it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Just out of college and looking for a teaching job.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to write!

Travel the world, start a family, and inspire others.

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom, she’s been through so much and still thrives every day.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think because I can relate to a lot of people who aren’t willing to talk about what they’ve been through.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Never give up and follow your heart!

Kama Blalock – Tennessee
Nomination by Bonnie Blalock
Photography by Beverly Reid Photography
Issue 77 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kama Blalock inspires people through her faith, resilience, positive attitude and strong work ethic. She competed in Gymnastics from age 7 to 14 and in the last years practiced 4 hours a day, 5 days a week while maintaining an “A” GPA. A diagnosis of Scheuermann’s disease ended her ability to compete. It was difficult for a teenage girl to accept that her dream was just not in God’s plan. However, her resilience, positive attitude and hard work led her to 4 years on the Varsity Cheer Squad, Beta Club, The National Honors Society and Leadership Club!

Photography by Beverly Reid Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I feel as if I am very good at commitment. Ranging from athletics to academic achievements, I try my very best at everything I do. I also feel as if I show perseverance, no matter how difficult things may be, I still take care of my responsibilities and everything required of me.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about how important it is to set goals for yourself. Having goals for yourself is what will give you the motivation to be successful in achieving them. I personally think that if you set your mind to something and really strive for what you want, your excellence becomes possible. Goals are so important to have throughout your lifetime and they provide an opportunity for success.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel very passionate about being kind to others. You never know what someone may be going through. The littlest things could make someone’s day. Being kind is so easy and can even change someone’s life. Throughout the years I have learned to treat others how you want to be treated and I think that this subject is really important to society and how we function together as a whole.

How did you find your photographer, Beverly Reid Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer amazing to work with. She made my senior year so easy and fun! I loved standing in front of a camera and feeling the excitement of how good my pictures were going to be. Overall I had an awesome experience and couldn’t have asked for any better!

What do you wish people knew about Scheuermann's disease?
I wish people knew that it can take a toll on your physical abilities and understand that it is very hard for an injury to force you into quitting the sport that you love.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class was my college communications course. The most interesting thing I learned was how to easily communicate with people who are different from myself.

What did you love most about the sport of gymnastics, and why were you so dedicated?
I loved how difficult the sport was because it always gave me a challenge. I was very dedicated because I started at a very young age and it became a very big part of my life.

How did that sport help you get to where you are now with your varsity cheer squad?
Gymnastics gave me the athleticism and tumbling that I needed for cheer.

Tell us about your cheer team and what you love most about it.
My cheer team is amazing because we have all been through a lot together and we work very well as a whole. I love the team effort the most because everyone knows they play a part and we all love what we do.

What is Beta club and National Honors Society and what do you do there?
Beta club and National Honors society are clubs for kids who make good grades and show service within their community. We do service projects and talk about things we could do to share service within our school and our area.

What has been your favorite leadership activity in Leadership Club?
My favorite activity is organizing our powderpuff game because it is such a fun experience to bring our school together.

What is your best leadership quality?
My best leadership quality would be perseverance. If I believe in something, I am not scared to stand up for what I believe in.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day, I would be spending time with my friends. Our favorite thing to do is to go on drives, get food, and listen to music.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
This august I will be starting my fall semester at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), which I am very excited to start this new chapter of my life.
