What do you love most about playing baseball and how has it influenced your life?
I was reserved and shy growing up, and even today I am still shy. Playing baseball, my parents made it possible for me to play local and travel Baseball where I was able to visit other states and play on other teams such as California even though I am from Louisiana, and not know a single person. I have traveled to Florida, Mississippi Texas and Alabama to play ball. When I was in Florida, I played for Team USA which is rewarding because I had to try out to make that team along with other players from across the USA. I was able to grow and venture out into the world. I met lots of other baseball players and made lifetime friends. It has guided me to be confident in playing at the next level. All in all it has taught me patience, how to be a team player and leadership.

Tell me a little bit about your future at the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain and what you find most interesting about studying to become an anesthesiologist in college.
I am stoked to be able to play at the next level in College. My Arkansas Coach Lance Spignar saw my videos and said how impressed I was to him and contacted my Travel Baseball coach to recruit me. Baseball is my life and at the UARM I will be part of making history as this is a new program for the college. I knew I always wanted to be in the medical field to help people it is who I am.

How have you been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA while also dedicating your time to baseball and basketball?

I am one of those people who absorb information in the classroom. I don't study. I just pay attention in the classroom. I am very blessed for that.

What accomplishments have you experienced through the sports & academics you are involved in?
I have been chosen for two years in a row for MR. LAHS BASEBALL for my high school, leading the team 3 years in a row with highest batting average and most stolen bases. I was MVP, 2 years 1st team all-district, 2 years 1st team all Parish, and 2018 All State.

How have you continued to be an inspiration in your daily life by including others and treating everyone you meet equally?
As a Senior I don't judge anyone younger than me. I treat them like we are on the same level. The younger kids look up to me which makes me proud to be the person I have become.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up on your dreams and hopes. I'm from a small town and we get overlooked a lot. you have to go out of your comfort zone and travel to be seen if you want to play at the next level.
Picture

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?

In 5 years I would love to be playing in the MLB. If not, then I will still be in college awaiting my degree.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite pastime is weightlifting. I go to the gym daily. As I was growing up, I was a tall skinny kid and I didn't want to be known as that anymore. I love to see my body changing. I am now stronger, faster and motived.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?

Calendar... my mom keeps a calendar on the fridge !

Ryleigh Rodgers - Texas
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination by Dana Rodgers
Photography by Dana Rodgers
and Eddy Chen/Universal Kids (first and last)
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ryleigh Rodgers has been inspiring her peers for many years with her charismatic personality and her natural ability to lead. She started gymnastics at the age of 3 and was headed down an elite/college gymnastics path.
At 12 her world changed drastically with a diagnosis of congenital kyphoscoliosis. Due to complications (including delayed paraparesis), Ryleigh underwent 4 spinal surgeries to correct her spine.
She is doing amazing now and has used her story on the platform of American Ninja Warrior Jr to raise awareness for scoliosis across the nation. She also transitioned to springboard diving and has competed at the State and National levels, placing 2nd at State and named All-American her freshman year.
Ryleigh has never allowed her diagnosis to dictate what she would or wouldn't accomplish in life. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, she is an A-Honor Roll student and was the Area and State Champion in her HOSA competition her freshman year, which provided her the opportunity to compete at the International Championships.
She also leads the Curvy Girls Scoliosis Houston Chapter, a support group for girls with scoliosis. Ryleigh faced her challenge head-on and did it with an amazing attitude. Never once asking "why me?" Just like in her younger days of gymnastics, she is a true All-Around person who was provided an extraordinary story to share. Ryleigh has decided that she would like to pursue a future in the medical field and become a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. We hope Inspiring Teens International will agree that her story is worth sharing!

Tell us about your experience with congenital kyphoscoliosis.

My experience with congenital kyphoscoliosis was a little crazy. At age 11 and a highly competitive gymnast, I received a very unexpected diagnosis of the rare spine defect. Due to it compromising my spinal cord, my parents decided to retire me from the only sport I had known and loved since I was three. I immediately transitioned into diving, but within a few months was recommended for surgery. That one surgery led to four, but it also led to some awesome opportunities for me to raise awareness for scoliosis. This experience changed my life dramatically, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

What was it like to have 4 spinal surgeries? What was the healing process like?
Having 4 spinal surgeries was not just difficult for me, but for my entire family. I underwent 3 surgeries in 11 days due to complications, including delayed paraparesis. I was in an insane amount of pain! The healing process was a lot more restricted for me due to complications, so I had to take things a bit slower than most. The hardest part was being so restricted, because that's not who I am!

Picture
Photography by Dana Rodgers

What made you want to try springboard diving?
As a young gymnast I had always said if I ever had to quit gymnastics, I would try diving because they use some of the same fundamentals and my gymnastics background would only benefit me as a diver. It was just a natural transition. When I started diving, I was very skeptical and wasn't sure if was for me, but I have grown to love it!

Tell us about the Curvy Girls Scoliosis Houston Chapter. How did you get involved?

Curvy Girls Scoliosis is a support group for young girls/teens to get together and share their experiences and challenges with scoliosis. We meet monthly to talk, do activities and just get to know one another because we are "more together than alone!" I was introduced to the organization by author Alyson Gerber after she saw my story on ANWJR. I watched the video of founder Leah Stoltz receiving the HALO Award and decided to get involved. I am honored to lead the amazing Houston Chapter of Curvy Girls!
Picture
Photography by Eddy Chen/Universal Kids

What was it like competing on American Ninja Warrior, Jr.?

ANWJR was amazing and an unforgettable experience! I started training ninja to maintain my upper body strength after retiring from gymnastics. Unfortunately, I started my surgical journey just 6 months later. When the ANWJR opportunity came about, I had not trained in over 2 years, so I was very skeptical about applying. My coach, ANW Josh Salinas encouraged me to do it anyway. I was selected and was able to train 2 months before the competition. I was not as prepared as I’d liked, but it was all worth it! I am beyond grateful for ANWJR and Universal Kids for allowing me the opportunity to share my story and raise awareness for scoliosis.

What opportunities have you gained from cheerleading?
Not only have I won two state titles with my team, I have gained so many friendships from this team that they are like family. We do pretty much everything together. We even have our own Instagram dedicated to post about what we do together outside of cheer!

Cheer has helped me with my confidence over the years. It’s truly been a stress reliever and I have enjoyed every moment of it!

How has cheerleading shaped you into who you are today?
Cheer has shaped me into an outgoing fun filled young lady. My freshman year was our first year competing and we did not win any competition that year, but we took those losses and turned that to drive. I now use that drive that my coach gave me in my everyday life!

Being awarded the Miss Merry Christmas crown was such a humbling award. It afforded me the opportunity to show the inner beauty as well as outer beauty. I strategically planned my theme around the Christmas event for Jesus is the reason for the season. I will forever have the Miss Merry Christmas award in my heart. It was a night to remember.

The Nomination: DeLaney Holland is my daughter. Although I’m not her biological father she is mine in my heart. Laney D is not only beautiful, smart and talented, but she has a heart that loves like I’ve never seen. She goes to school, works 2 jobs at times, is awesome at her hip hop dance and loves the Lord. It’s been a blessing to have her in my life and watch her grow into the young woman she has become.
What excites you most about working two jobs while also remaining busy with dance and school?

I love staying busy and always having something to do. I rarely ever get a break from my activities but working and dancing is something I really love spending my time doing. I think it’s important to take advantage of your teen years and experience everything you can!

When did you first get involved with hip hop, and what do you love most about dance?

I first started dancing when i was 8 and fell in love with it instantly. My favorite part about it is having fun & being able to stay active while doing something I love! I have many precious memories of bonding with my team throughout the years.

Tell me about your interest in becoming a NICU nurse after college.
Ever since I was little, I've wanted to become a nurse. My mom is a nurse and seeing her help others inspired me to follow that path too! I’ve always had a heart for babies in need, and I really have a passion to work with them in the future.

How has your faith impacted who you are and how you live your life?
Without my faith, I would not be where I am at today. Facing many obstacles throughout high school has opened my eyes to a good relationship with God. I’ve learned that you have to have faith in order to get through the difficult times AND the good times!

As an inspiration to others, how do you continue to be a great and caring friend to those who need it the most?
I strive to be the best person I can be for others around me. It’s important to be there for your friends and family because you never know what they’re going through. I always try to that person that anyone can come to whenever they need something.

Sydney Carreira - South Carolina
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by
Deanna Webber Photography
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sydney Carreira-Sydney is taking her senior year by storm! She’s doing everything she can to be involved and make the most of her final year. She and her friends are entered to be on the cover of our new local prom magazine, she is the kicker for her school’s football team, and she was nominated for homecoming queen. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her a couple times, and every time she is so sweet and so grounded. She has such a bright future and I can’t wait to see what door she opens for herself!
Picture

Tell us why you play football and how became interested in playing.
Initially, a coach approached me telling me our team needed a kicker. I started going to the summer workouts and eventually became an official member on the team. In the beginning, I was playing for myself because it was a cool experience, but then I realized how much of an impact I had. I started playing for those girls who did not have confidence in themselves and to show them whatever you put your mind to, you can do. I also played for my team. I saw how passionate they were about a sport and it really inspired me to push myself and break boundaries.

What is it like being the kicker for your high school's football team?
Being the kicker was one of the most incredible and memorable experiences of my life. In the beginning, I was extremely nervous, but all my teammates were extremely encouraging. Any time I messed up, they just told me to shake it off and keep trying. I also got a lot more attention than I expected. I knew people would probably get excited that there was a girl on the team, but I never thought that my entire community and the surrounding area would be so supportive.

Picture

What is it like being a female in a male dominant sport?

Even though I was the only female in a male dominated sport, my team treated me as if I was family. They were also very protective of me during games and always had my back. I could not have picked a better team to play with. The only difference was that I was in a different locker room, everything else was pretty much the same, which is what I wanted. I did not want any special treatment because I was a girl. Although it was challenging at times, I was really fortunate to play for my school and team.

How do you balance your life as a student athlete?

I currently have a GPA of 5.1. I have learned that time management is a huge part of being a successful student athlete. I have also learned that even though sports are fun, academics ALWAYS comes first. Most of the time, I see student athletes struggle due to procrastination because they tell themselves, “well I have practice, so the assignment will have to wait”. I knew, however, that academics is what ultimately gets you into college and even allows you to graduate high school in general. It is definitely challenging at times, but learning to not procrastinate and learning time management skills, I am able to be a successful student athlete.

How do you prove people wrong when they assume that student athletes barely getting by when it comes to academics? How do you break those stereotypes?
I always put being a student first when it comes to being a student athlete. However, to prove to people that athletes can also excel in academics, I make sure I make all As. I also take Dual Credit courses with a local college, AP classes, and honors courses. I believe there is a balance between academics and sports. It is completely possible to do both, and to be good at both. The trick is to not waste time. I get assignments done early, that way I can go to the entire practice every day.

Clara Soler - Pennsylvania
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Amanda Soler
Images by Inspiring Teens
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Clara Soler is inspiring because she has overcome -and continues to overcome - health challenges. She was born with a significantly small and limited airway (and is creatively constructed internally in some other boring ways). Most people with her condition have trouble walking and talking. Clara not only walks and talks, she sings and dances. When she is exhausted, she keeps going. Every day she challenges herself and sets goals to be involved in chorus and theater. These activities require her to actively work hard on breath control and sustained movement. She pushes through obstacles without complaining and without making excuses. Clara is extremely creative, crocheting every day. Additionally, she sings and dances and acts. She is very strong – and unusually flexible. Her strength is not only physical, it extends to her emotional and mental construction.  She has to visit Children's Hospital to have bronchoscopies and airway visits. She handles those procedures and visits with humor, grace and a positive outlook. When she doesn’t have to experience a procedure with anesthesia, she excitedly looks forward to eating at her favorite restaurant, the CHOP cafeteria.
Picture
Tell me about the breathing challenges you have continued to overcome in your life.
I have long stem tracheal stenosis with complete tracheal rings and Malaysia. This means that my trachea is very thin, collapsible and surrounded by complete rings. I get tired when I run extensively or dance a lot. Sometimes, I just don’t feel well and have trouble explaining how that feels. Humidity is usually what causes my breathing problems, but the cold can cause challenges for me too. My challenges are pretty much year-round.
Picture
What obstacles have you faced through your health challenges? How have you been able to accomplish your goals despite them?
I have difficulty breathing, but I really enjoy acting, singing, and dancing. I just persist and try my best even if that means having to catch my breath for the next few minutes. I know that if I want to accomplish my goals, I have to accept any/ all discomfort. Certain things cause me more problems than others. For example, ballet and tap have very different effects on my breathing. Ballet is a bit more calming in the sense that you are not always moving in some sort of walking or running movement. Tap is a lot faster (usually) and creates a few more problems for me.

What do you love most about theater and dance, and what has been your favorite memory of performing so far?
I love that performing gives me an outlet to be whomever I want to be. In theatre there is a final outcome where you’ll be able to see results, which motivates me to do my best and give it my all. I enjoyed the overall experience of being in Aladdin Jr because so many of my friends were in it. I met many new people through that production too. I still have a lot of the friends I made during that show and see them regularly. Theatre also provides a chance to meet people who aren’t in my grade or school, giving me more chances at creating long lasting friendships.
Picture
Can you elaborate on what your life has been like growing up multicultural?
My father is Hispanic, and he speaks Spanish, makes Spanish food and we have often traveled to Puerto Rico. It has always been a lively part of my heritage. I’ve become more aware that some people have a prejudice toward people of Hispanic origin. Because of this, I believe that I have gained more compassion and empathy toward victims of prejudice.
Picture
This is from when Clara volunteered to help save Oscar Hammerstein’s home and make it a theater center.

As an inspiration to many, how have you been able to reach out to others through your passions and all that you are in?

I enjoy helping my sisters prepare for auditions and help my friends practice for their involvement in theater and dance. Right now I am in conversations with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia about how I can volunteer my time to help children with health challenges. I’ve spent so much time there and know that most people want someone to talk to. When you’re at a hospital for an extensive amount of time it can get boring and scary. I’d want to be an example of someone who wasn’t given much of a chance but has been able to live a happy life.

Ginger Burlew – New Jersey
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Lisa Shifflett Photography
Issue 27 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ginger Burlew has been part of my Teen Influencer Team for the past 3 years. She was recommended to me by one of my Team girls at the time for a Back to School shoot I wanted to do because she had an interest in Modeling and I just fell in love with her! Her smile is infectious, and her upbeat personality just makes you feel happy! She has been a Varsity Cheerleader and participated in National Competitions. She coached kids with disabilities in a program called Sparkle during this time. She was a leader in her Connect Club at her High School which is involved with making kids with disabilities get more connected in the school. During her time on the Lisa Shifflett Photography Team she decided she wanted to pursue her Modeling dream and she set about finding out information on how to get signed to an agency. She did all the research and submissions on her own and landed a contract with a modeling Agency at 15! She is a generous and giving teenager and I hope you will consider her as an Inspiring Teen!
Picture
Photography by Lisa Shifflett Photography

Why did you want to start modeling?

I have been wanting to start modeling since I was little, but never really got into it until I started working with Lisa Shifflett. Lisa stuck by my side and helped me in every way possible to exceed my goal, which was to sign to an agency. After I started working with her, I fell in love with the unique way you can express yourself and I realized that this was really something I wanted to do. I wouldn't want to change any of this for the world!

How did you get started with cheerleading?
It feels like I have been cheering since I was able to walk. I was put into cheerleading and everything related to it since I was 6. My mom was the reason for this, and she supported me with it since the beginning. Cheerleading for all my life has taught me what it is like to be a part of a team and have others depend on you.
Picture
Photography by Lisa Shifflett Photography

Have you been to Nationals in Orlando for cheer? If so, tell us about your experience!

I have been fortunate enough to go to Nationals for cheer every year from sixth grade to my sophomore year of high school. Although we never had the outcome we were hoping for, just being a part of the team was a reward. We were all so close and I loved every moment that we spent together. I am so grateful that I now have friendships that will last a lifetime.

What is it like being involved with Sparkle?
Sparkle was an unforgettable experience that I am so thankful I got to be a part of. I got to work with these amazing girls who are just like you and me. They had dreams to cheer and being able to help them make it a reality was so fun and rewarding. Being involved with Sparkle has showed me how doing such a small thing can make a difference in someone's life.

What does it feel like to give back to your community and help people out?

It is such an amazing feeling to give back to the community and seeing what a difference it makes in the lives of others. Even the small things like making someone smile can make their day a little bit better, and that is so rewarding. From all of the amazing experiences that I have had, I learned to appreciate the little things and to just enjoy what life brings.

Rylee Courtney - Mississippi
Interview by Claire Path
Nomination by LaQuisha Courtney
Photography by Jeannie Meyer Photography
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Rylee Courtney sets high expectations for herself and strives to achieve them. She isn’t afraid to take on any task and loves to volunteer her time, especially with younger children. Even after spending the day at school, she spends three days a week volunteering in her town’s elementary school. Students love to see her coming because they know she will know them by name and spend time with them. She builds relationships with all kinds of people from all different roads of life.
Picture
Photography by Jeannie Meyer Photography

How has your dedication to volunteer work impacted your life and what you want to accomplish in your future?
Volunteering is about giving back and helping others. All of my volunteering experiences have shaped me in one way or another, but the main experience that has brought so much happiness to me is volunteering in classrooms at my city’s elementary school. I strive to serve as an example of a good, hard-working student to my third and fourth graders. I wish to apply my love for helping others to a career in nursing in my future.

What do you love most about volunteering and helping others in your community?
Petal has been home to me since I was 3 and I love giving back to the community that has given so much to me. High school can be tough, but volunteering gives me something positive to look forward to.
Picture

Tell me a little bit about your role as an Athletic Trainer’s Aid at Petal High School.
As an Athletic Trainer’s Aid, I was able to learn under my state’s very first Certified Athletic Trainer, Pedro Moreno. I primarily helped with Petal’s football team, which involved attending every practice and every game from April to the end of the season. This volunteer experience has allowed me to learn several aspects of medical training and gave me a front seat view on Friday nights.

Can you tell me about the CTE programs your school has to offer along with the opportunities that come along with it?
CTE stands for Career and Technical Education. My school offers several of these classes that pertain to jobs in the real world. The class I took was called Allied Health, which is a two-year program. During the first year, I learned medical terminology and information about body systems in the classroom. In the second year, however, I was able to take my knowledge from the first year and athletic training and apply it to clinical settings in my community and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Observing in clinical settings helped me to log over 100 clinical hours in my junior year of high school.
Picture
How have you managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA while also dedicating over 230 hours to community service throughout high school?
Luckily, learning is something that has always come easy to me. However, it was hard to balance volunteering and homework or studying at times. The key is to utilize every spare moment of free time. For example, it is typical to find me doing homework on the sideline of the football field during practice.

What advice would you give to teenagers who have dealt with adversity, and how does it relate to your own life experiences that have resulted in positive outcomes?
As a teenager, it is easy to get caught up on hard moments and let them get you down. But you always have a choice in how you let the past affect your future, whether it’s negatively or positively. After losing my grandfather in a devastating accident in November of 2018, I was absolutely heartbroken. Although that loss has always stayed with me, I constantly work hard not only for myself but also to make him proud.

Alexandra Chaney - Illinois
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Shelby Photography
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Alexandra is a current student at ISU and majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a goal of becoming a speech-language pathologist. She plans on working with children and adults who suffer with communication disorders. I'm nominating her because of her positive attitude, amazing work ethic, and overall; she is just an amazing human being!! As my photography studio representative for the Class of 2019, she participated in numerous themed sessions including a winter snow session which is the photo that I submitted. She brought her mom's best friend's dog, Sampson as a "prop" and he was so perfect! We love you Allie and wish you the best!

Photography by Shelby Photography

Why did you pick the major of Communication Sciences and Disorders to study?
I chose the major of Communication Sciences and Disorders because I want to change people's lives for the better. A speech impairment not only affects a person's ability to communicate but it also affects their self-confidence, social skills, everyday lifestyle, etc. I want to be able to bond with my clients and watch as they grow their communication capabilities.

Tell us about your plans for the future! What are you most excited for?
I’m so excited for my future! When I graduate, I want to start my career working in a hospital helping patients recover their communication skills after a stroke or brain injury. I’m so excited to see the progress of my patients and watch as they recover. Once I decide to settle down and start a family, I will switch over to working in a school setting helping students with speech impediments. I can't wait to watch my little students grow and see their speech improve.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
When I was employed at a vet’s office I was working one day when a group of kids brought in a very young baby bird that had fallen out of its nest. There was nothing we could do for the bird since the mom was gone. One of the vets explained to me that if we left the baby bird at the clinic overnight it would be dead in the morning. That news broke my heart so I offered to take the baby bird to see if I could help it. After they said I could take it, they gave me clear instructions on how to properly care for the baby which included keeping it warm, feeding it every couple hours, etc. They also told me that even under my care the baby would probably last a couple of days. Taking care of that baby bird was very difficult and I struggled a lot, but through the hard times (like waking up at 2 am to feed it) I knew this little life depended on me, and that's what got me through it.

What is your favorite thing about photography? Why?
My favorite thing about photography is the bond that is formed between the model and photographer. When I began modeling, I felt very awkward and vulnerable when I was alone in front of the camera. Lucky for me I was blessed with such an amazing photographer like Cindy. She talked me through everything in the beginning and made me feel confident in front of the camera. Cindy has a special talent where she can perfectly capture someone's personality in a picture, I believe she is able to do this because she forms bonds with each of her models which allows us to show our fun and quirky sides.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I love being organized! I wouldn't be able to do all that I do if I wasn't. The first thing I would recommend is a planner. Personally, I have 2, a physical book planner, and one on my phone. Planners help me with time management to ensure I am going through my day in the most efficient way possible. I also like to limit distractions, like my cell phone. When I know I need to get a lot done that day I will leave my phone on silent or turn it off. Not only does turning my phone off help me get my things done but it helps me to be more present in life.

Ella Rowe - Texas
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Lyons Photography
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I have known Ella Rowe since May of this year. Her confidence continues to grow each day and she is a joy to be around and work with. Dance is definitely her world. She has a strong passion for Ballet and sharing her talents and hard work with others. She encourages others to work harder and be better than they were yesterday. I look forward to capturing more of her journey throughout this next year.
Picture
Photography by Lyons Photography

How did your passion for ballet begin?
My mom placed me in a ballet class with my cousin, Gracie, when I was 3. What started as me wanting to spin around in beautiful, glittery dresses, turned into a lifelong passion! I think I really started loving ballet when I started performing in our company’s annual Nutcracker performance when I was 5. Every year I would audition, I didn’t even care what role I was given. I just wanted to dance.

How does the art of dance inspire you?
Dance brings me peace and happiness. Whatever kind of day I have had, when I start to dance, it focuses me, gives me energy and makes me feel like I can do anything.
Picture

If you never picked up dance, what do you think you would be interested in and why?
That’s a really good question. I also love to graphic design and to make things I see on Pinterest and other DIY sites so I would still be in the arts but maybe instead of working with my feet, I would work with my hands. I love creating!

Tell us about what inclusion means to you.

My older sister, Millie, was born way too early. She is very fortunate that she doesn’t have more challenges than she does, but she still has overcome so much and continues to face new hurdles. People aren’t always as patient and kind as we would hope for them to be. I have watched her be rejected by people who she thought were her friends simply because she couldn’t keep up physically, academically or emotionally. Today, we know so much more about the importance of including everyone together, particularly in the classroom. We all can learn from each other and help each other be better as people. For me, inclusion is about being patient in class if someone is learning differently, inviting them to sit with you at lunch, asking if they need help, and honestly, just treating everyone every day with the respect and dignity we all deserve.
Picture
Photography by Lyons Photography

How do you keep a positive attitude during hard times?

It’s not always easy! I get tired. I get grumpy. I fight with my sister and parents. But overall, I am a happy person and try to shake off my bad moods. My family and friends mean everything to me. Sometimes just being silly and laughing with them can change my bad attitude back to positive.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard. When you think you are working hard, work harder. Don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t good enough. Everyone has strengths and areas where we can improve. Know who your friends are and if they are better at something than you, have them help you. And you do the same for them. Work hard together and don’t forget to have fun!

Blake Richardson - Indiana
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Johnna Richardson
Photography by MJ Portrait Design
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Blake Richardson has always been very motivated from the start. I remember even as a little kid; he would do things over and over until he had it right. He's a bit of a perfectionist, which has always made parenting him easy. We could never hold him to the same standards that he holds himself, which is also a challenge for him. He is always working. Since he was 4 days old, the outdoors has always been his "happy place". Especially at the lake. When MJ Portrait Design came to take his pictures, she said she could see him completely relax, like this is where he is meant to be. He rocks the water shot!
Picture
Photography by MJ Portrait Design

How long have you been playing football? How did you become interested?
I have been playing football since pre-school. Football has always been a big part of my family and a way that we bond, and I have loved it since I was old enough to understand it. When I got the chance to start playing, I didn’t hesitate.

What does it mean to you when someone says, “You’re a good team player”? Explain.
For me, it means I’m doing everything right. Not only am I here to compete, but I’m here to develop myself and all the others around me. When someone says I’m a good team player, I know I have accomplished those goals.
Picture
Photography by MJ Portrait Design

What are some leadership opportunities you have had?
I have had the opportunity to be a part of my school’s student leaders and mentors program. I was an officer of the FFA chapter for 2 years, and a captain of the football team. I am also a member of student council, National Honor Society VP, and Senior Class VP.
Picture
Photography by MJ Portrait Design

Finish the sentence: “Blake Richardson is great at......” Please explain why.

Being a leader. Whether it is someone my age or just below me or a kid just entering kindergarten, one of my favorite things is helping them develop their abilities and watch them grow as a person.
Picture
Photography by MJ Portrait Design

Tell us about your childhood, having a great mind set of never going up from such a young age.
As a child, I loved building things and taking them apart. Sometimes when I couldn’t figure it out, I would spend hours putting it back together, which sparked the desire to challenge myself and always work until I can solve the problem.

Caitlyn Snyder – New Jersey
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Sharon Snyder
Photography by Get Shot by Brian (above)
and Richard Krauss and Sharon Snyder (below)
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Caitlyn Snyder has had a love of dance since the age of 2. Caitlyn dances competitively and has been in 7 Nutcracker performances, and this year she has the role of Lead Chinese. She is at the dance studio 15 hours a week while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Picture
Photography by Sharon Snyder

What do you love most about dance, and how has it become your passion over the years?
For me, dance is a complete escape. Every time I dance or perform I feel like I am growing and discovering new things about my technique and myself.
Dance allows me the freedom to express myself in ways I cannot at school or at home.

Having performed The Nutcracker 7 times, what has been your favorite role you have played so far?
To be honest, I have loved every single role Tricia Sloan has chosen for me. From being a little Toy Soldier to Lead Chinese. Each role has prepared me for something new and made me want to try harder each year.

Picture
Photography by Richard Krauss

How have you managed a 4.0 GPA while also spending 15 hours a week at the dance studio?

It hasn’t been easy to maintain my GPA. I have a routine, and I think that helps me stay focused. I sometimes feel the pressure, but I am also not afraid to ask questions or ask for help. I think that is where a lot of kids get stuck, they don’t want to raise their hands and ask a question that they fear may make them look silly.

Picture
Photography by Sharon Snyder

How has dance helped you receive so many new opportunities to be able to spread your passion towards others?

Through dance, I have gained so much confidence. I am able to be up on an open stage alone in front of hundreds of people.
Dance allows me to exceed my own expectations and helps me to discover new things about myself. With all of that, I am not afraid to put myself out there, and take chances.

Tell me a little bit about your platform “It’s Cool to Be Kind” that goes against cyberbullying.
Have you ever had someone talk about you behind your back? If you said yes, then you know that awful feeling you get in your stomach. Before the internet, it was easy to walk away and forget about it. Now children and adults are being bullied all day every day because the internet is always there. Cyberbullying is becoming more prevalent among children, adolescents, and adults. Cyberbullying is bullying but through the internet. It is easy to understand but not so easy to fix. People have access to the internet 24/7 and cyberbullying isn’t going to stop until we start speaking up. My platform “It’s Cool to Be Kind” will help educate parents and their children about the ramifications and warning signs of the increasing problem of cyberbullying, and ways to become socially responsible on and offline.

Picture
Photography by Sharon Snyder
Who do you find inspiring?
I am inspired by Tricia Sloan, the owner of the studio I dance at. She and her family spend countless hours on our productions. She motivates me to achieve things I never thought possible. Most of all she provides me with a home away from home.

What would you say is your favorite thing about cheerleading?
My favorite thing about cheerleading is being with a team and traveling. Traveling is fun for me because I get to experience new places I have never been like Kentucky, Indianapolis, a part of Ohio, and Florida.

How has being a cheerleader affected other parts of your life?
Cheer is considered my whole life. I have cheer practice 2-3 times a week for 2 hours each day. When it comes to hanging out with friends, I can only do that on the weekends when I don't have a competition.

Picture
Photography by Cole Photography

In what way do you think cheerleading has impacted your self-confidence positivity?
Cheerleading has impacted my self-confidence positivity very very much. At one point, I talked down on myself to the point where I didn’t like myself. I hated everything about me and my life. Cheerleading is where I found the new and positive me. I’ve became more positive, more confident, and more outgoing.

What advice would you give to someone who is in need of overcoming being bullied?

Advice I would give to someone is to NOT listen to people who are not worth your time. Always be positive which is most important. My mom always told me “Be the bigger person, don’t let anyone knock you down to your lowest”.

The Nomination: Shelbi Patterson is an outstanding young lady who loves softball, her community, and above all her family. She is involved in many academic and extracurricular activities as well in school. Shelbi is hardworking and dedicated to maintaining her high GPA. She will graduate in 2020 and is recently committed and signed to play softball at Webster University this next fall. Shelbi is such a beautiful young lady inside and out.
How did your brother inspire you to join the medical field for cardiology?
When I was 9 years old, I finally became a big sister. I was truly so excited. Two weeks after my brother, Jeremiah, was born my family found out he was born with 2 congenital heart defects. He would eventually need open heart surgery to save his life. I remember this being a very stressful time for my family, especially my mom. I knew I wanted to be the best big sister but for quite some time I couldn't even be around him, for fear he may get sick.
At 2 months old he had open heart surgery. There were complications after his surgery. Which meant once again I wouldn't get to see my baby brother for a while. My brother and mom spent a month in the hospital. I was only able to see them one time in that month. Once they finally came home, I knew all I wanted to do was help. I learned how to feed, help my mom with his heart meds, and care for my new brother, finally.
Throughout the years I enjoyed tagging along to his cardiologist appointments, learning about his CHDs, and getting involved with my family helping spread CHD Awareness. He has truly been my biggest inspiration to pursue cardiology in my future education. I hope I can help others, like my brother, and their families in the future.

How did you overcome the loss of an important family member who supported you through everything?
Last year I lost my grandpa unexpectedly. I had gone to my first prom the night before. It was such an exciting time. That afternoon my whole life changed. My biggest fan, best friend, and greatest supporter was gone. I truly didn't understand or know how to move forward from my first major loss in my life. I was blessed and honored to speak at my grandpa's memorial. Speaking in front of my family and people who knew my grandpa wasn't easy but digging deep and remembering the strength my grandpa taught me absolutely helped me push through. And I haven't stopped since. I'm determined to make him proud, and I know he's watching me.

Picture
Photography by Flatt Photography

What are some ways you are going to spread CHD awareness to people everywhere?

In 8th grade I wrote a letter to the CHD Quilt Project, and was able to get an AED donated to our schools new gym. My family and I have been involved in volunteering annually in our local MLH t-shirt sales. This helps raise money for our local heart group to make bravery bags for families during their stay in the hospital. I plan to continue to volunteer as much as possible and continue to celebrate CHD Awareness Week in college Feb. 7-14.

What is one thing you really love about softball more than anything else?
I love everything about softball! But if I had to pick one thing it would be the bond I have with my teammates. Being on a team with such amazing ladies and the chemistry of a good team is absolutely my favorite part of softball. Win or lose we're not just a team...we're family!

What are some ways to stay positive and encourage others when they are down?
I like to remind others of why I think they’re so great. Especially because I truly believe we are all so unique and special in our own ways, and we only have this one life to showcase our gifts.

Picture
Photography by Flatt Photography
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I'll still be in school, working towards my doctrine in Cardio-thoracic Medicine so I can become a Cardiologist. I plan to be a Cardiologist in a Hospital maybe in Tennessee or Ohio and hopefully have a family down the road.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. I would love to be able to save others in the future and make a difference in someone's life.
2. I want to see the beach for the first time.
3. I want to travel and see the world.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my Mom inspiring because she has served in the U.S Army and has raised us on her own for a while. I wouldn't be who I am or working hard without her pushing me to do my best.

Nomination by Virginia Acosta

Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Isabella Acosta has been an amazing young lady and has a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. She is strong willed and will accomplish anything she puts her mind to, she amazes me every day as she grows into a young woman with a bright future ahead and I cannot wait to see what her future brings.

What inspired your dream to want to become a Pediatric Doctor?
This has been a goal since I was very young. My love for young children is beyond the norm; I want to be a nurturer and I have an overwhelming feeling in keeping them safe. Hopefully one day I will achieve this goal and be role model for another young person to want to achieve the goals they have set before themselves.
Picture
Photography by Madzie Models

How has your curiosity for people and their interests impacted who you are?
For instance last year I noticed a girl I knew was doing some modeling for a company and it peaked my curiosity so I followed and watched her interaction on her social media. My interest in modeling became more and more curious, so then I noticed that they were doing an open interview for models for their next season. I decided to go and was picked to model for their next season on a 1-year contract and I have had an amazing time.
Picture
Photography by Madzie Models

What do you love most about interacting and helping others?
I am young and I know I still have a lot to learn myself but I do enjoy being able to be there for people when I have already experienced something in my life and am able to give them my opinion or my side of how it affected me or how I pursued and overcame the situation in hopes they can take my advice and use it to help them through.

How are you able to interact with people when they need it the most?
Just by being there for them, being that shoulder, being that conversation, being that ear, just being there for them for whatever they need.
Picture
Photography by Virginia Acosta

How have you inspired others through your endless pursuit to achieve your goals?

I hope I am an inspiration to keep their head up and don't let this world suck you in and spit you out. Move past all the negativity and try to be positive even when it can be so hard. I know that I have not always had a positive outlook but as I get older I realize that I will not allow others to knock me down, and I will be strong and strive to be the best I can be and I do hope the people around me will take the same approach and I really hope I have been an inspiration for them to do so.

Juliana Luna- California
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Alicia Crosson Photography
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: It is a privilege to nominate Julia Luna as an outstanding Teen Leader and Influencer! Julia is passionate about writing, social justice and making a difference. Her work ethic, creativity and leadership abilities are so inspiring! Julia is a National Hispanic Scholar, State Senate Scholastic Achievement Winner 2x for Academics, Leadership and Writing, and 3x Gold Medal Winner for Speech earning a perfect score in April of 2019. Julia runs Center Stage Productions, a low-fee theater camp for children. She writes the script and coaches kids in performing arts. Julia created and facilitated a creative writing club for two years which has become a class at her high school. As she embarks on college, I know she will continue to do great things! Thank you so much for considering Julia as an Inspiring Teen, and for this wonderful platform to have the opportunity to nominate her! xo

What are some of your favorite topics to write about and why?

I most enjoy writing about social justice issues. There are many causes close to my heart. Immigration Justice Campaign to Brady, Campaign Against Gun Violence, and Times Up Pay Up regarding the gender pay gap are three campaigns that are taking action and I love that. For me, writing is emotional and cognitive. Dolores Huerta said, “every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.” I aspire to use my time writing as an opportunity to make a difference.
Picture

Tell us about some of the awards you have received and what they mean to you.
Being a National Hispanic Scholar and winning a scholarship from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation has validated my path in academia. I strive to do my best in school. Receiving these awards was really an honor. I also was given the California State Senate Award for Best Writer which was so cool to be recognized for what I love most.
Picture
Photography by Alicia Crosson Photography

What is it like running theater camps for kids?
Often overwhelming! It takes tons of work writing scripts, choreographing dances, and of course managing the kids. However, it is so rewarding seeing them grow in confidence and helping them find their talents. My sister was originally the Artistic Director and I taught dance and acting when we started in 2015. She passed the baton to me as she left for college a few years ago. I was thrilled to oversee all aspects of the kids’ learning experience and added art and sign language to the curriculum. I was honored my sister trusted me to make the tough decisions, and a little terrified to be managing kids without her. Kids at Center Stage camps have hard lives. Students come who have learning disabilities, financial instability, and incarcerated parents. There are kids who come hungry and ones who will not let go of our hands starving for attention. Being able to teach them self-confidence and creativity is the most rewarding leadership experience I’ve had.
Picture
Photography by Alicia Crosson Photography

Do you plan on still doing theater in college? Why or why not?
I would enjoy pursuing acting in college. It is a fun way to build a community of friends which I am sure I will want as a freshman next year. I would also love to participate in the acting category in speech and debate in college. I want to grow in debate because I would like to major in Literature, Writing and Pre-Law in college.

Gianna Pelella - New York
Interview by Larissa Chelius
Nomination and Photography by rGRAYphotography
And Dyanna Pelella
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Gianna Pelella spends much of her free time as a community volunteer, helping at her church as a worship leader, as a crew leader during Vacation Bible School, and volunteering as a helper at the annual Hope Day New York events since 2015.

At school, Gianna has been an Honor Roll student since 2015, and was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2017. She has been the President of the Warriors of Faith Club since 2017 and has been a recipient of the CPMA Music Scholarship since 2016.

Much of what Gianna does revolves around her family, faith and education.

How did you become interested in starting your own makeup business?

Since I was young, I’ve had a passion for makeup. I always wanted to be able to use my face as a canvas to express myself. After learning throughout the years, I got the hang of it and people started to notice. One of those people was my cousin who asked me to do makeup for her wedding party. Doing makeup on other people showed me a new passion. Since then, I’ve created my own makeup business called Gianna’s Beauty Zone in which I do makeup for and get to bond with so many amazing people.

Picture

What kind of community service projects have you done?
Growing up, I was taught that other people’s needs are just as important as my own and made it a goal that my life will help meet the needs of others. Therefore, community outreach plays a huge role in my life. One outreach took place in 2017. My school put together a team to organize a supply drive to help victims of Hurricane Maria. Together, we filled the auditorium with supplies to be sent and we got them sent at no cost. This event was awarded by the town! Being able to bring hope to these people was such a fulfilling feeling. Along with this I have also been a part of Operation Christmas Child, Hope Day New York, Vacation Bible School, and more.

Tell me a little bit about vacation bible school.
Vacation Bible School is a week full of happiness where you get to meet so many children who want to learn about God. Being Christian, this is something so touching. When I volunteer at “VBS”, I’m a crew leader so throughout the week, I form bonds with these children and really get to impact their lives. It’s truly an amazing experience!

What is it like help at Hope Day New York?

Helping at Hope Day New York is one of the most unreal experiences I have ever had. At Hope Day, dozens of organizations provide free services such as groceries, shoes, health care, prayer, etc. to a community. Each organization has a tent on a football field and anyone in the community can stop by and receive what they need. Being able to volunteer and give hope to these people is a priceless, untradeable experience.

What opportunities come with being president of the Warriors of Faith Club?
A lot of opportunities come with being the president of the Warriors of Faith Club. Our club does many outreaches. Recently, we worked with Operation Christmas Child and packed 25 boxes with toys to be sent to kids all around the world who haven’t received Christmas gifts. Soon, we are hoping to work with Project Reason to raise awareness for improving mental health and preventing suicide. This club has given me strong relationships that I am so grateful for. It has changed my life in a positive way.

Kristyn Alford - Louisiana
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Kelly Landry
Photography by Luckett Portrait Studio
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kristyn Alford is such a sweet, loving child, who suffers from RA (rheumatoid arthritis). She loves her dog Mazy who we adopted 4 years ago. She takes very good care of her. She also been volunteering for the animal shelter in West Feliciana Parish for 8 years. She makes great grades and she tries her best to always help others. She inspires us a lot - she keeps going despite her RA (rheumatoid arthritis), which is contained to her knees. Sometimes they swell and we have to get them drained, but she just gets up and keeps going!! She is one positive child who loves others. :)
Picture
Photography by Luckett Portrait Studio

How has your rheumatoid arthritis affected you, and how have you been able to work positively through it?

My arthritis has affected me in many ways, it’s a thing I had to adapt to over time. I was bullied and arthritis isn’t a normal thing to have as a kid, so I didn’t have a normal life as kids usually do. My positivity came from my struggles. I know that some people have it worse than me. I would always think of the positives over the negatives. No matter how hard it got, I always kept my positivity because there’s no point in being negative about the situation when you still have hopes, dreams, and heart.

What advice would you want to give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to someone would be to spread the love. Everyone in this world is different, but the same in many ways. No matter who the person is, you should be kind to them, express love, and be positive towards life.
Picture
Photography by Luckett Portrait Studio

Tell me a little bit about the animal shelter you been volunteering at for 8 years.

The animal shelter is like a home away from home. It’s a no kill shelter and I still volunteer when I have the time! Every animal deserves a loving home and I’m glad to help anyone who is interested in helping, wanting to foster, or just wants a good, loving animal! The shelter I been volunteering for is Animal Humane Society, but I’m willing to help any shelter that needs it!

How has your love for people and animals impacted who you are and your passions in life?
My love for people and animals has allowed me to become a better person and learn new things each and every day. When I’m older I actually want to be a scriptwriter and author telling stories that impact people and bring them together. I would also like to start charities and organizations for people and animals.
Picture
Photography by Luckett Portrait Studio

As an inspiration to many, how have you managed to spread positivity and joy to others?
I have managed to spread positivity and joy to others by being myself and spreading the love. A good way to do this is to give compliments to people or talk to someone who sits alone at lunch (etc.), just be friendly!
