Samantha Green – New York
Nomination and Photography by Dan Duren Photography LLC
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Samantha Green is an amazingly talented teen, outstanding academically, athletically in beach volleyball, and a quiet leader amongst her teammates. Sam is respected and loved by her coaches and her teammates on and off the court. Love seeing her cheer for and encourage the younger athletes in her sport. Throughout the lockdowns of 2020, she continued to work hard, practice at home, and came out smiling at the first big tournament in Florida at the end of the year. Sam is an amazing Senior, well deserving of recognition.

Tell us about your beach volleyball career.
I discovered my passion for beach volleyball through my mom, who had played college volleyball and still currently plays beach volleyball. After dragging me to the beach for most of my childhood, my mom eventually convinced me to play and not long after I fell in love with the game. Beach volleyball, unlike indoor, isn’t only about which team is the most physical or the most skilled. I found my love for the doubles beach game in that it is so intellectual, relying so heavily on strategy and decision making. When playing beach volleyball, nothing is certain, whether it’s the weather conditions, the different depths of sand, or the varying matchups, each game and practice offers something new and exciting to work on.
Being a competitive beach volleyball player in New York, finding opportunities to compete year-round has been challenging. However, I refuse to allow my geographic location, and cold winter weather, to stop me from pursuing my passion for beach volleyball. I train with the most competitive team in the Northeast region, out of New Jersey, and dedicate three days a week to the two-hour long commute through New York City to practices. With this team, I can practice year-round in an indoor facility, and train with the best players in my region.
In persisting through the challenges I faced in my pursuit of my passion for year-round beach volleyball, I have battled my way to becoming a Division One Beach Volleyball recruit and look forward to playing collegiate volleyball next fall.
Beach volleyball has taught me how to be a positive and encouraging teammate, a leader, and most importantly a better person. I have learned how to be resilient, adaptable, and intellectual, all of which are crucial skills I apply to my everyday life.
Picture
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
While pursuing beach volleyball, and being a leader in that regard, I have also managed to excel academically. Finishing 3rd in my high school class of 318, I have taken high rigor AP and honors courses throughout my high school career, all while managing the grueling schedule of sports. I am also a selected leader in my high school and community and participate in many volunteer groups in which I mentor the younger students in my high school district.
Academically, I am a peer tutor for struggling students in my high school district. Through this leadership role, I can help others succeed in their courses, while instilling in them the confidence they need to better understand challenging topics. Athletically, I serve as an Athletes Helping Athletes peer mentor, in which I am a role model for younger students in the district. Through this role I teach elementary aged students the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork, and good decision-making, while offering them a positive example to look up to in their own school district.
Through these leadership roles, I hope to leave behind a legacy of resilience and positivity. Always striving to be the best version of myself, I have instilled these values in all the children and peers I have mentored and hope that they can embody these characteristics in their own lives.

Picture

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would present on the importance of the intangibles. No matter what you are doing, being good at that specific task, whether it's a sport, activity, club, or school subject, is only half of the battle. It is your attitude, determination, work ethic, and all the "intangibles" that rise you above being good to instead become great at what you do :)

Mikaela Inskeep – Illinois
Nomination and Photography by Jenny Seiler Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination:  Mikaela is such a good example of an inspiring teen. She is involved in many sports, clubs, youth group and works as well. She does all of this while maintaining good grades. Mikaela has a magnetic smile and personality and a kind heart to match.

Tell us more about your recent community service during Covid-19.
When Covid-19 began and masks were extremely hard to find, a woman asked my mom if my sisters and I would be willing to join a mask-making group with a handful of other women from the community that sews and distributes masks to anyone that needs one, free of charge. We were stoked to help and have a service project while we were locked down at home anyway! One of the best parts was delivering masks because it was a reason to get out of the house, even if it was just to put a few masks in someone’s mailbox.

What advice do you have to incoming high school girls?
I would tell incoming high school girls that it never hurts to try new things! It’s better to test out different clubs and sports early on, instead of wishing you would have tried something after it’s too late. I would also say that coaches and teachers notice when you take initiative. For example, if you play a sport, be the first person to hustle over when the coach calls a time-out. Always be the best you can be.

Picture
Photography by Jenny Seiler Photography

What different clubs are you in and what are your roles and responsibilities in each?
I am involved in FFA, FBLA, Travel Club, Christian Club, Scholar Bowl, and Science Club. I am also a representative on the Student Council and the spring-semester president of JILG. These different clubs give me a great variety of experiences. One of my favorites to be a part of is the Student Council because I love to host things at my house. For example, building the class homecoming float in my shed.

What sports are you involved in and what position do you play/do in each?
Throughout high school, I have played basketball, volleyball, tennis, and softball. I currently play softball as a second or third baseman, and just finished my senior tennis season as a varsity doubles player. Usually, the only part of our sports seasons that overlap is conditioning, but as long as you’re conditioning or playing for at least one sport, the coaches are happy.

Picture
Photography by Jenny Seiler Photography

What is a favorite memory from one sport, and accomplishment from another?
I have a lot of favorite sports memories but winning a close game in overtime in basketball gives you the best feeling ever. An accomplishment I’m really proud of is making the All-South team in tennis this year and even being a state qualifier after only having played for about a year. Hard work pays off! The best part is that my doubles partner Zoe has been my best friend my entire life, so I really couldn’t have had a better season than that.

Rylie Dewley – Michigan
Nomination by Tiffany Dewley
Photography by Lindsay King Portraits
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Rylie Dewley is constantly thinking of others and ways that she can make a difference in her community. Her community service is extensive. She most recently created & managed an adopt a senior program for the seniors at her HS. Out of the 435 seniors who participated she got all of them adopted out by members of the community. She is doing the same thing this year and she's not a senior. She also adopted a highway and maintains that along with teaching youth about being Heart smart. She has received the Presidential volunteer award along with other service awards.

Tell us about your Start Heart Smart program.
I was born premature and at 3 days old the doctors at Hurley Hospital had to stop my heart and restart it. It was at this time that I was diagnosed with ASD/VSD (holes in the heart) and a heart murmur. Growing up I had to be cautious of what I did to make sure my heart was healthy. When I was 5yrs old I was told the holes in my heart had closed. A few years ago, I participated in a Free Hurley Hospital/Tommy’s Heart Teen Heart Check. The doctors noticed something was off with my echocardiogram and I was sent to a cardiologist. It was then that I was diagnosed with mitral insufficiency and leaky valves. Throughout my childhood I struggled with different cardiovascular issues, as do many other children. Many people do not realize that children and teens can have cardiovascular issues as well. Through Start Heart Smart I can help educate America’s youth on the topic of cardiovascular issues. With this program I attend schools and teach children, teens, and adults how to keep and have a healthy heart.

What is your Adopt a Senior Program?
I started the Adopt-a-Senior Program last year for seniors who attend Grand Blanc High School (my High School). Last year, the seniors missed out on a lot of opportunities due to COVID-19. They were not able to have their prom or even a normal graduation. Senior year is the one year of school that everyone looks forward to and they missed a lot of it. So, I decided I wanted to create a program to help honor the students and to hopefully brighten their day. I started a group on Facebook that grew quickly and now has over 1,500 members of the community in it. Parents, guardians, and others can post about their senior; what they enjoy, their favorite food, etc. Then, a member of the community will “adopt” them and send them gifts. It shows the seniors that the community is thinking of them and it helps put a smile on their faces.

What are your goals this year for both programs?
During this time, it is hard to be able to promote my programs in a “normal” setting, however, I am working on virtual events and videos for both events. I am going to continue to promote both of my programs this year in hopes that I can reach even more people than I previously had. Being the winner of Inspiring Teen Magazines would allow me to do this.

Picture
Photography by Lindsay King Portraits

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am the first Majorette in Grand Blanc in over 30 years. I do my best to try to serve my community any way I can.

That's exciting! Tell us more about that. How did you get the honor and what were your roles and responsibilities?
I have been twirling since I was about 5yrs old and as I got older, I was given the opportunity to twirl for my middle school. I was able to perform at football and basketball games for the 7th and 8th grade teams but also for the freshman and junior varsity basketball games at Grand Blanc High School. When I was in 8th grade, I met with the color guard coach and band director for the Grand Blanc High School band. I expressed to them how I was wanting to twirl for the school. They were so supportive and allowed me to be a part of their program. I can twirl during the varsity football pregame and halftime shows but also at the varsity girls and boys basketball games. Being the GBHS majorette has been an amazing experience. I help promote the band by traveling to different baton competitions and performing my High School majorette routine in hopes of placing first. I also promote the marching band throughout my community by doing different types of performances.

What is the Presidential Volunteer Award, how did you get it, and what does it mean for you to get such a prestigious award?
The Presidential Volunteer Award is awarded to individuals who complete more than 100 hours of service work. It means so much to me to have received this award. I received this award two years in a row which was such an amazing experience. To be able to give back and help others really means a lot to me.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love reading! I have been an avid reader since I was young, and I always try to preach to younger children to read as much as they can. Reading not only helps strengthen your mind but it can also transport you to a different world.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I’m actually pretty good at archery. I am not competitive in it nor do I hunt but I love to go out to my backyard and practice. It helps me release my stresses and connect with nature.

3 Things on your bucket list
I am a pretty adventurous person. I would love to be able to skydive, go white water rafting, and sit passenger in a race car.

Tell us about your non-profit called CASH's Caring Corner. How did you start it, what is it for, and what are your roles and responsibilities?
CASH’s Caring Corning is my non-profit organization with the mission to promote volunteerism within your corner of the world regardless of how big or small those efforts are. I started it at the beginning of 2020. This is my Caring Corner, where I can make a difference in my corner of the world. I am CEO and founder. Share with us your dance journey.
I started dancing when I was 4 years old. I picked up a pair of pom-poms and told my mom I wanted to be a cheerleader. This launched my long commitment to dance. I practice between 12-20 hours a week. Along the way I have worked and danced with many great people. I started at Kesters School of Dance and have many great memories. I moved into competitive dance and now belong to Studio 19 Dance Complex in Mars, Pa. I have studied many types of dance including: tap, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, clogging, acro, popping, breakdancing, hiphop.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from cheer?
My favorite memory from cheering is winning Regionals this year. My team worked hard on their routine and we wanted to win. We spent every day after school practicing. Right before competition a couple of us were quarantined because of COVID. It was stressful to not be at practice because you were exposed. It felt like wasted time sitting at home. I understand the reasoning, but it was very frustrating. Regardless, we were able to finally get back together, practice hard and win. We move on to compete at States in March and I am looking forward to the challenge.

Tell us more about Citrus Perfect Jr. Teen.
In July from the 30-August 1, 2021 I will compete for the Title of World's Perfect Junior Teen (13-15 years). I am very excited to compete this year and have worked hard at overcoming some of my fears. It has always been difficult for me to speak to other people. I began this journey to put myself out there. Along the way, I have learned important life skills such as interviewing, listening and just being able to formulate an answer when someone asks a question. I have also met amazing people who have aided in my transformation.
My future goals are to attend UCLA and become a general surgeon. I choose UCLA because their medical program is highly rated. As part of this goal, it is important for me to take honors and AP class to maintain a high GPA.

Picture
Photography by Carlos Velez
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a very conscientious student. Education is another area of importance for me. Through education I will obtain my goal of becoming a general surgeon. I am very proud of my 4.75. I am taking 1 AP class and 3 honors. I recently earned High Honors. Geometry was my hardest subject and I had to get a tutor, but I think it's important to realize when you need someone elses help.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would present the topic of volunteering within their community. It is important for everyone to understand that regardless of how big or small their contribution is, they can make a difference in their corner of the world. It can be volunteering for the local fire department, church, or school. It also does not have to be for an organization, taking a trash bag and walking your local street picking up trash is volunteerism. Helping at a local food pantry handing out food. All these tasks need done. If each person takes on one task, we move our communities forward. Sometimes, our kindness may be what inspires someone else to dream and succeed.

What is Letters of Hope?

Letters of Hope is a very important project to me. Over the last year, I have been writing letters to the residents of a local nursing home. During this pandemic many of our seniors were left without visitors. This is my way of bringing a little joy into their lives. Once a month I make a special gift for them. Just something small, but I wanted to inspire hope and that eventually this would all come to end and although they may not be able to see their loved ones someone still cares about them.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was winning cheerleading regionals. I was able to accomplish this by practicing long hours every day and working hard as a team.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to follow their dream and work hard. Studying is a huge part of how I have gotten where I am today. Staying on track with schooling is very important and making sure to do all work.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I will have graduated high school and would be attending my second year at UCLA.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite pastime is spending time with my friends and family. You don’t realize how important it is until the opportunity is taken away from you.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Most people don’t know that I can play a violin and the clarinet.

3 Things on your bucket list?
I want to Travel to Europe and see the Eiffel Tower. I want to go to Bora Bora, and I want to learn to surf.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find it inspiring when I see friends or family members accomplishing their goals. It reminds me that I can accomplish mine.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think others are inspired by my kindness. I make it a point to treat all people with kindness. I also believe that others are inspired by athletic and academic abilities. I mean if I can do it, then they definitely can too!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
One more thing I want to share is to ALWAYS believe in yourself! Do not let someone else determine your dreams, your goals, or your success! YOU DECIDE!

What are you most committed to?
My commitment towards the things in the nomination. Including, family, friends, and school related activities. I participate in multiple organizations for my school. I always make sure to finish all my work for these plus my schoolwork in a timely manner. When someone is counting on me to finish something I do it as quickly and correctly as possible.

Tell us more about your leadership positions.
I am a member of my school’s student council. In this council I help to organize events and activities that bring together our students as a community. My responsibilities include listening and communicating the wants of students. As well as learning to communicate with multiple personalities. My goal for the end of the year is to learn more how to get along with and communicate with multiple personalities and people to obtain the best end for the school as a whole.
I am also a part of my schools’ chapter of NHS. In National Honors Society, we are expected to serve our community and create service opportunities for our school. Our responsibilities are mainly to create opportunities for the students of BHHS to serve their community by donating needed items. By the end of this year, we hope to donate time of the chapter to a nursing home and do some kind of volunteer project. We are, at the moment, unsure of what that project is,

You’re in a lot of sports! Give us a favorite memory or accomplishment from one.
My favorite memory and accomplishment from cheer wrap into one! It is being the only junior on our varsity basketball cheer squad last year. I loved this opportunity and it made me grow as a person. Being the only junior was kind of lonely because I was outside of my comfort zone and away from my friends. However, I was able to make new friends with the seniors on the team. I was also able to get the experience of Varsity Basketball Games last year, which I am very thankful for because this year is so different.

How did you get into acting and what have been some of your favorite roles/plays?
My family has always been into musicals and theatre. I saw Wicked in Columbus Ohio when I was about ten and fell in love with it. I auditioned and participated in all my middle school productions and continued this into high school. Some of my favorite roles have been Belle in Beauty in The Beast and Beth in Little Women. Both are strong female figures that show their strength. The cast of Little Women, also turned into a family during the fall of 2019. My character Beth, taught me that even the smallest of people, roles, and personalities can make a big and strong impact,

Lily Catherine Bury

Lily Catherine Bury – Tennessee
Nomination and Photography by Cate Connery Bury Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Lily Catherine Bury lives in Nashville, TN. As the oldest of three, she often finds herself called on to help with her younger siblings. At school, Lily Catherine loves her science classes and spending time with her friends. She loves spending time with people who she says she can be 100% herself around. Lily Catherine is a passionate and gifted dancer who spends many hours in the evenings and weekends in the studio working on her technique and learning new choreography. She loves spending time at the dance studio both with dancers her own age as well as loving on and mentoring younger dancers in the same way that others once did for her.
Picture
Photography by Cate Connery Bury Photography

How did you get started with dance and where are you with it now?
I started dancing at Ann Carroll School of Dance when I was just two years old. My mother grew up dancing there and wanted to put me into classes so that I could fall in love with dance as she did. My first classes were just ballet and tap until I joined the competition team. Since then, I have studied jazz, contemporary, tap, hip hop, and pointe. In 2017, I auditioned for the pre-professional track at my studio and made it in. Since then, I have moved to the highest group in the company. I have traveled to Los Angeles to study at The Edge, with Debbie Allen, and at Disneyland. I have also performed at Walt Disney World, in four Christmas parades, and participate every spring in competitions and every summer in my studio recital.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from dance?
My favorite memory of my dance career, along with my best accomplishment, was when I danced in a Walt Disney World showcase and parade when I was 11 years old. I loved that I was able to experience what it is like to be a professional dancer. We had eight-hour rehearsals and learned choreography one day before performing it. I found it compelling to see what the life of a professional is like. This gave me the drive to pursue a professional dance career.

How has COVID-19 affected your dancing, how did you feel about it, and how have you stayed committed and optimistic to honing your craft?
At the beginning of the pandemic, we couldn’t have any dance classes at all, but that only lasted about a week. My dance teachers quickly figured out of they could teach us entirely on zoom, and my afternoons were quickly filled with classes again. We brought plywood in to tap on and rolled the rugs out the way for the rest of my classes.
The hardest part was when the pandemic forced my studio to cancel our big recital in June. It was supposed to be a big 50th-anniversary recital celebration at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. We still found a way to perform though, and we had an outdoor recital in September.

Tell us more about your volunteer work with the homeless. How did you get started and what specifically do you do? What are your goals for 2021 with it?
It has been hard to do much since the pandemic started, but I have worked with my church both through a program called Room in the Inn and by creating blessing bags for the homeless, which are filled with gift cards, snacks, hygiene products, and a bus pass. Volunteering with my church was my pathway to starting my work with the homeless.

Picture
Photography by Cate Connery Bury Photography

What about social injustice do you want your peers to know and why are you so passionate about it?
I am very passionate about equal rights for all marginalized communities. I believe that we are called to love our neighbors meaning every neighbor no matter race, gender, nationality, socio-economic status, etc. I want my peers to know that, even if they do not believe this, that by loving our neighbors will bring a better sense of unity throughout our community and the world.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I’ll be a senior in high school and preparing for college. I want to go to college to study both dance and follow a pre-med track.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love hanging out with my friends and getting to be completely myself.

Picture
Photography by Cate Connery Bury Photography

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is being able to put my leg behind my head.

What are 3 Things on your bucket list?
Three things on my bucket list are Skydiving, find my distant relatives in Greece, and Dancing in New York.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom and dad to be inspiring because my mom owns and runs her own photography business by herself and my dad has worked extremely hard to get where he is today.

What do you love about dance?
Some things I love about dance is how it makes me a better person as I learn to become a better leader, a better teammate and more disciplined. I love how I have met so many great friends through dance and that it has brought me so much closer to everyone in the dance community as we are all truly family. I love all the intense moments when we are on the stage either dancing together or alone and even just waiting to see how we placed. Even though critiques are hard to take at times, they help me become a better dancer. Even when we get yelled at in practice, I love how myself and my teammates can still find something funny to laugh at. Having Improv time either at my studio in front of my peers or in my basement all alone is one of my favorite times to dance. I can just let the sounds of the music move my body through the song, which allows me to express how I am feeling at that moment. My favorite thing about dance is that it makes me feel calm and safe in my own space with just me and my thoughts.

What do you study and who would you recommend that kind of dance for?
I study various types of dance, including Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Ballet, Hip Hop, and Fosse. I would recommend Fosse for someone who is interested in a lot of different specific movements, and someone who is ready to work very hard in this type of dance as it is one of the hardest I have learned so far. For Jazz I would recommend it to someone who is into doing energetic, upbeat and sassy pieces. For example the song ̈Play That Sax ̈ is a great song for Jazz choreography because it is upbeat and fun. For Tap I would suggest a person who likes to make sound with their feet, since the taps on your feet are choreographed to be complementary to the music. Contemporary is my personal favorite. For this style of dance it is important that the person is able to tell a story through the way they move. Also showing a lot of emotion on your face and with your movements is very important for Contemporary pieces. It shows your connection to the music. Ballet is perfect for someone to show their technique, flexibility and skills. I would suggest Hip Hop to someone who likes to move and groove, let go and have an overall very fun time. Last but certainly not least is Ballet. Ballet is my least favorite style of dance, but the most important for a person, like me, wanting to dance professionally to try and master. This is because Ballet is the basis of all styles of dance.

Tell us a favorite memory from dance

My favorite memory from dance was the first time I got to go to Pageant. Every January Showcase America puts on a Showcase of Stars Pageant in Columbus, Ohio. Any soloist that competed in any one of their earlier competitions for that season is eligible to compete at the pageant. It is 2 days packed full of dancing and making memories! The competition is held in a fancy hotel that all our studio dancers stay in. The hotel is nice enough to allow us to decorate our room doors. All the dancers door decorations are based off the theme of their song. My song that year was ̈Let’s Hear It For The Boy ̈ my costume had a big red heart on the top. So my mom decorated my door with pink wrapping paper, a giant red glitter heart and a ton of pictures of me throughout the season that far. Looking back on it now, it was sort of cheesy, but I loved it then. On day one all dancers learned a big production number in a matter of a couple hours that was then performed at the beginning of the show. I remember lots of dancers being crammed together on the stage trying to be seen. What I would imagine a big audition would be like. I also got to wear my first pair of heels! They were only 1⁄2 inch, chunky heel, but hey, I was 8! I had to learn how to walk across the stage to model my pageant dress AND I had to walk with a boy! At the time I thought YUCK! I danced on the biggest stage in the biggest auditorium I have every danced on/in before. And if that did not make me nervous enough I was the very first girl to dance that year! I guess going first paid off because I made it through to the finale. I did not get a crown or sash that year, but I made memories that I will NEVER forget. The best part of that weekend was after everything was finished, we had one big party. Girls from all studios running around and in and out of each others rooms and making new and lasting friendships.

What is a favorite accomplishment in dance?
One of my favorite dance accomplishments happened this year when I made it onto one of my studios Senior teams, as just a 7th grader. Luckily our older dancers at the studio are such great role models and do not mind having us younger girls on their team. They try and do all they can to support us and push us to be better dancers. Another favorite accomplishment was during my time on our Mini team, we competed at a State competition and won Grand Champs. We were a very young team and beat out lots of other wonderful teams and even older teams. It was such a great feeling of accomplishment that we were all crying.

What do you love most about your dance photoshoots?

What I have loved most so far about my dance photoshoots is all the creative things I get to do. My photographer, Candy, really makes me feel comfortable and encourages us to do what makes us feel good. The photo may not always come out how we first planned, but we make adjustments and try again. I really enjoy all the different locations we have been able to go to. My favorite has been when we went to downtown Cincinnati. There are so many beautiful parts of the city and so many fun photos that can be captured. Another thing that makes my heart happy when doing photoshoots is the other dancers I have been able to meet and form friendships with. Mixing someone else’s creativity with mine has really captured some great images. Overall I just enjoy the fun and laughs that comes out of doing a photoshoot. So many bloopers!!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
The topic I would present about would be dance. I have been dancing for 11 years and have grown and learned so much. As I continue to grow in my craft I want to teach other girls and boys the things I have learned and help them strengthen their passion as well.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One major inspiring thing about me that my nomination does not cover is my love for my family and my fur babies. I have a big family that includes 1 half sister, 2 half brothers and 1 step brother. I'm lucky enough to have 2 homes with 2 sets of loving parents, 2 dogs and 2 cats. I enjoy spending time at my Nana and Papa house the most! My Nana always has something good to eat and my Papa always has the cheesiest jokes. We enjoy playing various card games together and sometimes I even win! I have more support than most and for that I'm grateful.

Jordyn De La Torre – Arizona
Nomination and Photography by Liebrock Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: At age 7 Jordyn was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. She endured months of chemotherapy and pain but persevered. She now has a 4.6 GPA is a member of countless school and community clubs and hopes to go to medical school because she was too inspired by the doctors that helped her. Not only does she participate in advanced placement classes, but she is also a student in the IB Advanced Placement program. The Nation’s most rigorous academic program. She has it all! Brains, beauty, and the biggest, most caring heart. She inspires me! I just had to nominate her!

Please share your cancer journey with us and how it has inspired your medical career.
I have been raised around doctors who had diagnosed Stage IV Wilms tumor in my kidney when I was seven years old, doctors who planned out my chemotherapy afterwards, and doctors who helped facilitate my remission. They are the reason that I am alive today and why I am so happy to have the surgical scar stretched across my stomach. It was their dedication to ensure my prolonged health that has inspired me to someday become one of them.
To achieve this goal, I have dedicated much of my time and energy into my schoolwork by engaging in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program as well as numerous clubs around my school.
This adventure of an education coupled with prolonged medical complications has taught me the value of working through any hardships that may come my way so that I can come out the other side a better person. I am who I am today because of what I have been through, what the doctors around me have done for me, and the lessons I have learned along my path of education.

How has the coronavirus hindered your process and how did you work around it? Was there something positive that arose from it?
Lately my life and the world around me has been swarmed with doctors explaining the negative effects of the coronavirus and the actions that need to be taken against it. Stay home. Don’t wear a mask. Quarantine. Don’t go to school. Wear a mask. Go to school. My education has cycled between the normal coalition of students in a courtyard to paperwork filed on a laptop screen. In-person. Online. I’ve been wired up to the continuous stream of medical reports and news updates since the outburst of the pandemic.
Though coronavirus has inhibited the fluency of an organized education, it has taught me the language of self propelled knowledge. My months spent in quarantine have given way to hours of answers and research to questions I was able to formulate without the schedule of a seven-class day. Without this time spent to myself, I would not have been able to explore my own interests and discover my devotion to discovery. It was this time that has solidified my need to one day become a doctor.

As an officer & a leader, what legacy do you hope to leave behind for future leaders at Chandler Buddies?
After having spent four years as an officer for Chandler Buddies, I hope to have left a legacy of acceptance and love. I have had an incredible experience coordinating and planning countless events that have brought people with and without intellectual disabilities together. It has really taught me the value of learning from others who are not like me and the strength that can be found in diversity. I hope that future leaders of Chandler Buddies will be able to enjoy it as much as I have.

You have an outstanding disposition as both a role model and generous human. What do you do with the younger football programs and how does it feel to be a role model for the next generation? What legacy do you hope to pass along to them?
I really like helping the younger athletes learn and understand the game like I do.
It feels great to be considered a role model for those kids. I hope what they gain from me , is that if you work hard and dedicate yourself their dreams and goals can be reached. If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Athletics. It’s very hard in our area to get noticed for scholarships and opportunities in college. My family and I have worked very hard to get me noticed and to put my skills and drive out there to be noticed. I’d love to help other athletes like myself who may not have the support or knowledge of what needs to be done. Also, I’d add how addiction can affect families and how you can overcome your family dynamics.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like to thank EVERYONE that has given and offered me opportunities that, have so far, helped me get to where I am at today.

Something positive is that I spent so much time dancing that I really improved! When I got back in the studio, I was so much more skilled than I was before! I had grown so much because I was practicing so much at home! I think it was a great thing that I had so much time to focus on my dancing!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was getting on pointe. This was hard because it took lots of physical strength and I had to be prepared mentally! It was difficult but I am glad that I pushed through because I love dancing on pointe.

During lock down, I needed something creative to keep going! I started my own small business doing tie dye! It has come a long way! I was scared at first that I wasn’t going to make profit. But now, it is thriving! I am so glad that I can make others happy with my colorful tie die pieces too! In 2021 I hope my business can continue to grow and I can find ways I can serve my community through my business and donate to charities!

This photo was taken by my mom! I am working hard on packaging orders for my small business!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I will be 18 and graduating high school! I hope that I will get into a good college that can help me turn my passion for dance into a career! He takes academics seriously and has high honors on the honor roll. He is co-president of his school's National Honor Society chapter. He enjoys being on the yearbook committee. He plans to attend college and pursue an engineering degree.

He loves studying about astronomy, NASA, and robotics in his free time.

How do you serve your community through your school?

Every spring my high school takes a week off to go out into the community to serve. In the past, we have gone to Michigan to clean up a camp for the summer, and this year my class is going to Kentucky. As the president of the National Honor Society at my school, I get to use my leadership skills to serve in more ways than just our service week. I ran a fundraiser to raise money for teen moms for Christmas.

You are a leader in several different capacities. What are some important leadership qualities that are important to you?
I feel that a good leader should be their authentic selves. Staying true to yourself means don’t try to be somebody you are not. Some people naturally have a desire to help others and improve the world around them, and it can be easy to find a way to use that desire to build up themselves and others. Cooperation is important since it may be hard to be a leader. Working with others makes it easier to serve out in the world.

Picture
Photography by The Studio Brenda Johnson

What example are you hoping to leave behind for the next generation of leaders in your community?
I hope that the next generation of leaders won’t lose the passion of leadership and the responsibilities that come with it. During this age, many people prefer to sit in the background and let others do all the work while technology and social media takes up so much of their lives. Looking past that, we can see how important it is to get out into the world. Our world needs a group of leaders with a serving attitude. I hope that others will see that, then look and see how involved I am and want to do the same.

In what ways are you committed to protecting our wonderful Earth?
Our planet provides us with so much, and we may not even be aware of it. We have breathable air, clean water, and soil that grows our food. Some people don’t care about that, and sit back as litter, trash, and pollutants build up in the environment. I help work to keep that from happening by picking up trash that I may see on the side of the road, recycling when I can, and being careful as to where I put my trash.

Share with us your interest in science and space.
By far, one of my favorite subjects to talk about is anything about science and space. Have you ever thought about how we are floating through space in a vast universe on Earth? I get my inspiration from looking up at the stars in the endless sky and imagining where humans might go one day out there in space. The possibility that technology provides for us to get to other planets drives me to become an engineer, and to be a part of that process to get there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I will have completed college and will have gotten a degree in engineering. I want to work with robotics that helps improve our lives, but I’m not sure yet. It would be awesome to work with advanced prosthetic limbs or technology that will be used in space. I also see myself living somewhere that is not cold for the majority of the year. Somewhere nice like Florida would be amazing.

Picture
Photography by Sherry Misch

3 Things on your bucket list
I definitely want to travel to different places in the world. I have never left the United States before, and think it would be awesome to travel to Europe and experience authentic Italian food (my favorite!). I also want to watch a rocket launch at NASA someday. Getting to see people’s hard work succeed and how complicated a machine can be that actually gets to space is amazing. Lastly, I would like to make a difference. I want my life and work to have made a positive impact on people. I want them to look back and see that one individual actually can make a difference.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to talk about why leadership is important to me!

Why is leadership important to you?
Leadership is important because, when done correctly and genuinely, it can be the ignition for great change and betterment. The world has so much potential, but many people are stuck in their ways and lack an active drive to do better, or they’re eager to excel as a person, but don’t know where to start. Leaders are essential in motivating this growth and without them great potential may be wasted.

What strong leadership skills do you use most?
Someone once said, “Leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders”. I strive to inspire, not to instruct. I would say this is my strongest skill because many “leaders” try to command their agenda on others instead of creating an authentic interest in personal growth. Good leaders will create a cycle of other good leaders and I think that this outlook is my greatest skill.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination briefly covered the activism group called The Change We Seek, which my friends and I created this summer, to acknowledge important topics that we felt were being disregarded in our community. We hosted a rally against police brutality, fundraisers for many organizations, and met with our city's officers and state representatives to talk about bettering our community, school systems, and society.

Picture
Photography by parent

Tell us more about meeting with your city officers and state reps. Who set that up, who all went, and what topics did you discuss? What was the outcome?

This past summer The Change We Seek decided that our predominantly white, suburban city was too sheltered from the adversity that people of color in our nation face on a daily basis. We set out many goals from acknowledging injustices in society to the school curriculum. The Avon police helped navigate us towards our state representatives and we discussed how the school curriculum is set, budgeting for ecological resources, and much more. Since then, I’ve had many people say they too feel ready to speak up against inequality, furthering the push in progression and new leadership.

Do you have plans to go into politics and if so what specifically?
I don’t have plans to go into politics (at the moment)! I find that almost everything is political in the slightest and that acknowledgments in my own biases and beliefs -- bettering the way I think -- is truly most fulfilling!

What change/s do you hope most to see in the world in 2021?
I really hope to see people recognize that their personal experiences aren’t the only experiences that matter and that they don’t speak for all communities. I think that most people have great ignorance of human nature, but I wish that people would go the extra mile to correct, educate, and do better for the benefit of all.

Nick Miller – Michigan
Nomination and Photography by Debography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Nick Miller has always loved football and his high school career started out rough when his respected and loved coach lost his life due to depression. Nick fought hard to achieve and maintain a leadership position on the team, including being named Team Captain, Defensive MVP, 1st MAC White Division Linebacker and being named to the MHSAA 1st Team All County and All Academic Teams. In addition, he is an excellent student and is looking forward to playing football in college while pursuing his degree.

Tell us about your football journey.

I started playing flag football in third grade and have continued playing since - I love the game! I play middle linebacker and h-back, leading the team as one of the captains for the past three years. As a result, I received defensive MVP, and All County First Team Linebacker, My hope is that my hard work on both the field, in practice and in the weight room is recognized by younger players and that they take it to heart and try to put forth as much effort.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment with football?
As a senior, I was handed down the flag for the Wrecking Crew and led the team onto the field each game senior year. In addition, being selected for the MAC White division All County First Team Linebacker and All County Academic Team were huge honors as they were county-wide.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very competitive in all aspects and enjoy not only sports, but hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors in my spare time. I hope to continue these hobbies into the future.

What do you think is your strongest skill or attribute is as a leader and what is something you want to instill upon all of those who you mentor or look up to you?
I've always been a team leader and sensitive to the issues my teammates face and helping them through them. I would hope that I have been able to help others and inspire them to do the same.

How has COVID-19 changed your game and what is something good that came out of it?
Covid caused my team to miss out on most of the senior year of football, however we were able to adapt and train and come together as a team to play late in the season. The good would be that it showed us we could pull together to work harder to make it to the playoffs for a successful season.

You are in a lot of clubs and organizations. Pick one to tell us more about - One that means a lot to you. What is it, what do you do in it as a group?
I believe that every one of the clubs and organizations that I am proudly a part of are majorly important to my community and the well-being of others, so I definitely have to make a hard decision with this one.
If I were to choose just one, I think I would choose to tell you about my 4-H club/group The Apaches (and the goat & rabbit club which is associated)! I’ve been a member of 4-H for almost 9 years now and it’s been one of the most influential experience of my life. Not only do I present and sell my rabbits to which is the reason I am apart of 4-H, but I’ve spent most of my time absorbing the lessons surrounding it. 4-H has brought me so much closer to my community and the people within it. There’s not a single person in that group that I do not look up to, they are constantly helping those around them and teaching them at the same time, for example my club donates money to a different charity each month such as soup kitchen, animal shelters, and the veterans etc. I’ve learned how important it is to do the same as my mentors like helping those around us and teaching the importance of hard work and putting forth dedication to everything that you do. These are the most important lessons that have helped me grow as a person, it’s NEVER too late to join 4-H! If you ever have the opportunity take it!

What are your goals?
I think primarily one of the most important goals in my life is to keep learning, not just about what I’m going to do in the future such as my career path but rather learning about myself. I think before I am able to move smoothly towards my future, I have to learn more about the things that I love as a person and with learning those things about myself I can use them to build a better understanding of what I’m good at, and even more importantly what I love which will help me pick what I’ll be best at to hopefully impact the people around me and the world.

What would you like to do to change the world?
Easier said than done, I would love to change the world by exhibiting the importance of understanding the differences. Although this may sound wordy and confusing, I so simply mean I wish that everyone around each other could get along despite opinions. We all know especially with most recent circumstances that a lot of the world is surrounded by disagreement and hate. I so much wish that I could use my social media platforms, even if they aren’t big, to promote how easy it is to get along with others even if they have different opinions. It’s okay to not think the same way as others, the only thing you should do similarly is care about one another, no matter who they are. Just be kind :-)!

Addie Roberson – Tennessee
Nomination and Photography by Amy Morgan Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Addie Roberson is an inspiring teen because she has a heart of gold. Everything she does is big. She loves big, competes big, and gives big. The past 5 years she has ran in the St Jude 5K race during the Memphis Marathon weekend. The past 4 years she has been a St Jude Hero. Race day was an unbelievable experience for Addie. She said “I will never not run in the race. I want to run for those that can’t run at this time.” To date she has fundraised over $8500. Every penny was donated to St Jude.

Tell us about running for St. Judes. How did you get started, what do you do to prepare, and what is a favorite memory or accomplishments from your time spent with them?
While running XC in middle school, I had heard about the St. Jude race and decided that it would be a great experience for me to give back and help others while running. To prepare I just continue with the training I was doing during the season. My favorite memory is running through the hospital and seeing all of the children out there cheering. It shows all the hard work you put in through the years is worth it when you see children fighting for their life and I am just grateful to assist in any way I can.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a member of my competitive school cheer team, school cross country team, school softball team, travel softball team, and school track team. I maintain a 4.0 GPA. I am a member of Student Council, service club, math club, 9th grade class secretary and 10th grade Vice president.

You're VERY active in sports! Which sport do you spend the most time training for/in and why? Tell us about it?

Being a part of 5 sports programs it comes with a lot of training; but I would say that I train for all of them equally. My schedule during the week is full of practices, games, and lessons. Weekdays I have school, cheer, softball, and running almost every day; and on weekends I have a 2 hour drive to travel ball practice. Even though practice time and training takes up ALL of my free time. It is all worth it when the time comes for me to show all the hard work I have put into all of my sports.

What type of leadership roles do you play within your various clubs and extracurriculars?
Being a part of multiple sports I want my teammates to look to me as a good leader that is willing to help out others when necessary. I want coaches to remember me as the student-athlete that was willing to give anything to help others. I want parents to be able to notice how much hard work and dedication I put into the sport not only for myself but to better my team. I feel like every day that I go into practice is an opportunity for me to become a better athlete at the sports that I love.

What does being in student council entail and what roles and responsibilities do you do?
As a student council member and class officer I feel that I can help out my school anyway I'm needed. I do understand that I'm only one student at a very large school, but I would like to show how one person that heart and dedication can contribute so greatly. As a leader our peers depend on us to help better our school. When I was voted sophomore vice president, I knew that it would be a lot of hard work, but I was willing to put heart and dedication into bettering our school for the student body and staff.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I could talk forever about leading by example. I am passionate about making the right choices even if it means you are standing out from the crowd.
I am very passionate about people doing the right thing and making the right decisions. It doesn’t matter if you have 3000 people watching or no one watching, doing what is right is much better than doing what is easy. Sometimes others make choices to fit in and it might have helped for a short-term solution but only created a long-term problem. I personally believe that everyone makes mistakes, and you have two choices: you can either fix the problem and do the right thing next time or you can continue going down the wrong path. I choose the first.

Give us an example of a difficult situation where you had to lead by example, and the outcome.
One day at lunch I noticed a student sitting alone. I had the decision to sit with my friends or I could do the right thing and sit with him. When I sat down, he was happy, and we talked about his Minecraft world game. I was so happy to make someone's day. Slowly some of my friends moved over there with us and kept coming over until my entire group was sitting at the new table. It was a great feeling for me, knowing that I started a small act of kindness by just simply doing the right thing.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give to someone who wants to be where I am is to set goals and never give up until you achieve those goals. I am a little bit of a hardheaded person so if i want something done I will get it done no matter what anyone says. My life motto is: “Anything is possible with Determination, Dedication, and Discipline”

Picture

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
One of my favorite things to do in my free time is TikTok. I absolutely love to be creative on this app. I think that I'm TikTok famous, but no one believes me but I can guarantee you that in a few months I will have millions of followers…. hopefully. I just enjoy making videos, some of them are funny, some of them just show how bad of a dancer I am but I really enjoy making TikToks all the time.

3 Things on your bucket list
Number one, I want to win a high school state cross country meet. I feel like if I keep training hard and keep improving, I will be able to reach that goal.
Number two, I would like to win a white jacket. now you may be asking yourself, “go to the store and get a white jacket”. But this is no ordinary jacket, this jacket is a reward for winning High School coed cheer Nationals. I have the opportunity along with my fellow teammates in April to receive one of these jackets and if we keep working hard those jackets are ours.
And finally, number three, I want to win a state championship with my school softball team.

Payton Kendall – Pennsylvania
Nomination and Photography by Amy Hedges Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Payton Kendall, dedicated and determined, is a dual enrolled high school senior and a college freshman. She is a three-season high school varsity athlete participating in field hockey, basketball, and softball in addition to playing recreation and travel softball in the summer. Payton gives back to her community by assisting with the local baseball little league, assisting with a local community center, and in her church. Her future plans consist of attending college, playing either college field hockey or softball while majoring in exercise science in pursuit of a degree as an athletic trainer.

What do you want us to know about you, and what do you like doing for fun?
Although I am only 18, I have experienced both struggles, academically with a learning disability, and accomplishments, with learning to overcome my setbacks. Being a high school senior and a dual-enrolled college freshman, it is my positive attitude and encouraging nature that helps me in being a thoughtful role model for my peers as well as my teammates, during sports competitions. I enjoy various sports and the friendships that are developed in a fun and hardworking atmosphere. We can help each other achieve goals individually and as a group finding mutual interest in the sports, we share. There are new memories with each new game.

Tell us about your sports career. How did you get started and what do you like to play most? What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from that sport?
My desire to compete began at an early age. I started playing baseball at the age of four and have competed in various sports that include baseball, softball, in-line speed skating, basketball, and field hockey. Although I love softball, field hockey has given me much success. In my varsity career, I have assisted my team in winning four varsity district titles, advancing to state-level competition, and working hard to highlight my skills to college coaches, in efforts to compete at the college level, in one of the most trying seasons of 2020.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?

It is important to me to talk to others about the importance of sportsmanship. This word means a great deal on and off the field or court. My personality and my experience allow me to understand my teammate’s frustrations and share in their joy. Sportsmanship is about encouraging others to be their best for themselves and the team, working hard together, and communicating for better results with each practice and competition. It is important to lead by example and help others understand that winning is fun, but losing only happens when we quit trying.

How did you get involved with assisting with the local little league team and what do you love most about it?
Returning to the little league where I started my athletic career is a great opportunity. I started assisting my dad with his little league team, and it has been a rewarding experience watching the young athletes work to achieve their personal goals as well as accomplish milestones within the game. Assisting with various tournaments at the complex has allowed me to continue to contribute to my community and helps provide opportunities for youth to build a love for the game that I enjoy, too.

Tell us about your church activities and what roles and responsibilities you have within.
My religion and the opportunities in my church provide another way to help children grow. I assist in teaching Sunday school and encourage learning as well as growth through God’s word.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The most difficult situation that I have ever experienced and accomplished is a challenge that I deal with daily. Learning to achieve academic success despite my learning disability that makes it difficult to read and comprehend easily has required me to place a great deal of effort into learning coping mechanisms that allow me to work towards my goal of higher education. Though it is not a badge of honor that I wear, it has taught me that an obstacle is only a problem if you allow it to be a problem that you are incapable of overcoming.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give to others to achieve the success that I have experienced is to never give up. It is determination that will provide the fuel to achieve your dreams. If you quit, you will never know what you are capable of reaching.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I expect that my world will change drastically. My dreams will lead me to experience college sports and graduation with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. I will be looking towards a master’s program to further my ambitions of obtaining a collegiate sports training career.

3 Things on your bucket list
Having a bucket list means that you are constantly working toward achieving something better. Currently, my bucket list is full of adventure, challenges, and a little risk. It consists of traveling the world to experience various cultures, zip lining through the rainforest, and on a smaller scale, skydiving.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this program as it was surprise to be nominated and I am very thankful.

Kaitlin Robinson

2/4/2021

Picture

Kaitlin Robinson – Texas
Nomination and Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kaitlin Robinson is the most kind hearted person you will ever meet. She lights up any room she enters with not only her beautiful smile, but her infectious laugh and energy.
She has spent most of her life giving back to her school, community, and world. Last year, she started a club at school to make care packages to be delivered to the homeless and less fortunate. Kaitlin has played sports throughout her life and has been involved in many clubs and organizations with her school and church. But her heart is in helping those, either people or animals, that are less fortunate than she. She would rather give to someone than to have anything for herself. Her selfless acts from a very young age to now have always made her family extremely proud of her.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography
What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I am most proud of my volunteerism. I have always strived to give back to those less fortunate than myself. When I was in elementary school, I would ask my friends to donate money so I could purchase something for my teacher in lieu of birthday gifts.

Tell us about your love of volunteering. Where did it start and where are your favorite places to volunteer?
I have always loved to give back to my community and touch every heart I can reach. I want people to remember me as the girl who made them smile or feel welcomed wherever they are. When I was younger, I never asked for anything for Christmas or my birthday because I knew someone out there needed something more than I did. My first major volunteering opportunity was a toy drive for Ben Taub Children’s Hospital that my sister and I started coordinating every year on Good Friday. It was amazing to see the children’s faces light up when they received a new toy or coloring book! Moments like those are priceless and unforgettable.

What is the club you made at school for the homeless? How did you get it started and where is it now? How did Covid affect your efforts?
My junior year of high school I started a club, R.A.I.L, dedicated to helping the homeless community. R.A.I.L stands for Raising Awareness; Impacting Lives. If I could impact one person’s life for the better, my purpose would be fulfilled. I have always made care packages and dropped them off the local shelters or handed them out to men and women I see on the road. When my English teacher last year brought up the idea of starting a club, I jumped right on it! I was able to form a council and have our first few meetings before Covid-19 shut down our country. Sadly, no more was able to be done due to school closures and safety protocols. Hopefully soon I will be able to create a non-profit for R.A.I.L and continue on my journey!

Share your dance journey with us. What are your favorite types of dance to practice and what is a favorite memory or accomplishment with dance?
Last year I decided to try out for Legacies, the dance/drill team at my high school. I had never danced before this and was very nervous going into the prep week and auditions. I practiced every night until midnight that week and my mom and I prayed so hard that I would make the team. When I got my call back, I was ecstatic! I ended up making the team and the world of dance became more than I could have ever dreamed of. It has shaped me as a person and leader and helped me find my true self.
My favorite types of dance are contemporary, lyrical, and jazz. When the music moves through my body during a contemporary or lyrical piece, I feel like I have been transported to a different universe where it is only the music and I. Jazz is so energetic, and a sassy, fierce song has the most dramatic facials and sharp movements. I’ve always been a bubbly person and it is so great when I am able to just have fun and let loose with a dance.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I have had the opportunity to be inspired by some great leaders. I would love to speak to a group of young girls in leadership and empowerment. I feel that I have some lessons I’ve learned about goal setting that I would like to be able to pass on to others just starting their high school journey.

What is something you learned from a great leader that you have used through you to pass down to the next generation of great leaders?
One of the fabulous experiences I had as a part of the Legacies Dance Team was being able to attend a women’s empowerment talk. The guest speaker said two things that have always stuck with me and I pass them on to everyone, hoping they will get the same life changing affects it had on me. The first thing she said was “fake it until you become it”. I have been able to live as the best version of myself every day because I can wake up knowing that I want to help others and act on it! The second thing she taught me was to have a “power pose”. Whether it be your hands on your hips or lifting your head a little higher, have a pose that gives you the confidence to be who you want to be and not back down to anyone. I have always dealt with anxiety, so having a way to help empower myself in situations where I want to give in and hide has helped me overcome so many obstacles.

What are your greatest strengths as a leader?
As a leader, I imagine my greatest strengths to be my ability to empathize with others and stand my ground when situations get tough. I never want someone to feel unwelcome or sad around me and I will go the distance to make sure I put a smile on everyone’s face. I also do not have a problem with standing out or being negatively labeled when doing the right thing. If I’m not the coolest because I won’t do something I know is wrong that does not affect me and I hope others will be able to say no, or stand up for someone, if I have the courage to do so first. It’s hard to be the odd one out, especially as a teenager, but I make it a goal to set the trend for standing up for yourself and others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

In 5 years I will most likely be starting my first year of medical school. After high school I will be attending college to double major in Biomedical Science and Business. Once I graduate with my Bachelors Degrees I will attend medical school and finish out my residency, and then open my own plastic surgery practice. I would love to help others who have been in accidents feel good about themselves again. In today’s society people are easily judged based solely off their looks. It is easy to forget how amazing of a person you are inside when your morale is so low due to an outside perspective. Everyone should be confident in their own, beautiful skin!

Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person I have in my life is hands down my mother. As a single mom of two girls, I’m sure she has a rough time with my sister and I every once in a while. I would not have been able to accomplish anything I have without my very best friend and role model pushing me every day! My mom, Kathy Robinson, has dedicated herself to children her whole life. As a mother and elementary teacher, she impacts and shapes the lives of children everywhere. She is the most confident and true to self woman I know, and a fabulous role model for all. She has taught me everything in life, but the most important words she has instilled into me is that “you are enough”. She has led me to be the confident, well rounded young woman I am today. Without her I would not be in this magazine right now... without her I would not be anywhere. So thank you Mom, for always having my back and pushing me out of my comfort zone a little further. I love you ♥︎

The Nomination: Brayden spreads positivity wherever she goes. She is a bright light in her school, athletics, and community. Brayden is a top 10 student and on track to graduate with honors in May. She will have over 30 college credits when she finishes her High school career. She plans to attend VSU in the fall and pursue a degree in Sports Medicine.

She began playing soccer her freshman year in high school. She was named to the First team All-Region her freshman year. In her sophomore year, she was named the Region Player of the Year. As a senior, she was named the captain of her soccer team.
Brayden has a goal every day of bringing a smile to the faces of the people she meets. She is a true inspiration to others!

Would you most like to be interviewed about?
my academics and athletics

What would you like to share about your academics?
While being in multiple sports and extracurricular activities, I have managed to keep honor roll all four years through high school and a high GPA. I was awarded Top Ten last year and i am working hard to remain in Top Ten when i graduate in May. Even though athletics are an important part of my life, i always make sure academics are my top priority. I always set goals for myself and strive to meet them at any cost.

Tell us your athletics journey. How did you start and what do you play now? What is a favorite memory or accomplishment?
I started in Gymnastics at the age of 2. I continued to compete at multiple levels until the age of 8. It was at this age that i won my first national title. After winning this national title, i decided i wanted to try something new. I joined an Allstar Cheer Gym and started competing on a level 3 competitive team. I grew to love cheer and continued competing for several years. My team and I obtained a national championship at one of the largest competitions in the U.S.. That was one of my biggest accomplishments that i had worked for in my life. During those years, i was also a competitive dancer at Pirouette Dance studio. Now during high school, i have done Sideline Cheer, Competitive cheer, and Soccer.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
i would say that inspiring motivation is my strongest leadership quality. I believe that nothing is impossible especially when someone else believes in you. I like to be the person that helps others believe that nothing is impossible. I find joy in helping others achieve their goals and accomplishments.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My junior year i moved to a different school, and i was not eligible to play any sports. I was really upset, but i did not let that stop me from doing what i loved most. Instead i used my talents to help others in the community. I volunteered as the middle school competitive cheer coach. I also volunteered with the Varsity soccer team and was named the team manager. This made me feel as if i was contributing and sharing my experiences and knowledge of both sports. I enjoyed forming a bond with players and coaches at that time.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
Being kind to everyone because i have set that to be my goal in life. You never know what someone is going through or if they are having a bad day, and just smiling or saying hello could make their day 10 times better. i know it may sound cliché but it is something that i really strive to do every day.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself hopefully getting into med school and working on my degree in sports medicine.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes, I also enjoy singing. I started by singing in church and competed in the Junior Talent competition with my church and won at the age of 9. I started taking voice lessons, and went to Nashville, TN for a showcase. That was an awesome experience that i will never forget. In Elementary school, i sang solos for school programs. I continued singing solos in chorus in middle school. After i got into high school, singing was in the shadows because of sports and academics. I still enjoy singing with my friends during carpool karaoke sessions in my car.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about my point of view on life. Although, I’m really an open book so ask me anything you want!

What is your point of view on life?
My point of view on life is, you only live once. You are the only you in the world and it is your decision on how you make the rest of your life out to be. I was taught to just live in the present, don’t dwell on the past, and to not focus so much on the future.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some of the inspiring things my nomination doesn’t cover, are the opportunities singing gave me; the things I enjoy painting/drawing/ jewelry making; how I have worked with special needs children since elementary school, and how I love my friends and family immensely.

Tell us about your singing career start to now... how did you get started, where do you sing, what are your favorite songs to sing/style of songs?
I started singing when I was about 9 years old and I actually don’t do it as much as I used to. I started my career with one of my dearest friends who is now battling cancer. Without her I would have not of received the opportunities I was given. I have been in many competitions, festivals, basketball games, and ceremonial openings. I have sung the national anthem for Butler boys' basketball, Butler girls' basketball, Butler girls' volleyball, a girls Fever basketball game, the opening of the Coliseum for the state fairgrounds, Peyton Manning Riley Hospital Toy Drive, and many other minor events. I have sung at the Hendricks County Fair competition which I received second place, and many other small fair events. My most memorable singing opportunity was singing at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. I received my own trailer, and I went out and sung 4 songs 3 times. I felt like a star. Nowadays, I sing the in the shower and to an empty house.

Share with us more about your artwork. We'd love to see a picture too!
I have always enjoyed drawing, painting, photography, you name it! I’m not amazing at it but it’s just something I like to do in my free time! In 5th grade, intermediate school, my drawing was picked for the cover of the yearbook and a flower I had drawn was placed in the children's museum. But that was 5th grade. I consider photography to be artwork as well. I have always enjoyed taking pictures of things such as nature and my friends. I just love capturing the beauty of things and moments just so I can keep it forever.

What do you love about volunteering with special needs children and what do you do with them specifically?
I have volunteered with special need children since elementary school and I do peer tutoring now in high school. I love being able to create a bond with these kids to allow them to feel like they have a friend to count on. It is hard to be in a bad mood around these children because all you want to do is make them happy. I work with them on their skills and how to represent appropriate behavior along with communication skills and a lot of other life skills. Not only do I put an impact on the kids themselves, but they put a huge impact on me as well!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
I am simply passionate about many things but, if I were to sit amongst a group of my peers, I would speak on how each human should perceive life in the way the seek it to be. How there is only one of you in the world and that is your greatest power.

What do you think is your greatest power and how do you use it to do good in the world?
I believe my greatest power is spreading positivity and giving good advice, even though I can't take my advice for myself. Being able to help others is very important to me because we all go through something personal. Being the one someone can count on allows me to do good in the world.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Some advice that I would give to someone who would want to be where I am today is just be yourself! It is so important in life to love yourself and to not live up to others expectations. Just simply follow your heart.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I will be 23, which my dream would to be married by then. I want to pursue my career as a pediatric occupational therapist and to minor in special education.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel the world, own a lake house, scuba dive!

Who do you find inspiring?
Despite all the famous inspiring people in the world, I find my mom who is my best friend one of the most inspiring women. She is strong, beautiful and is a great mother. I wouldn’t be the girl I am today without her.

Salem Parker – North Carolina
Nomination and Photography by Tayson Photography, LLC
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: A photograph catches emotion for one moment in time. For Salem, you would need many photos to show the emotions and inspiration that she shares daily. However, it is times when Salem is not in front of the lens of others that her true inward beauty shines. Salem is a natural communicator on so many levels. She is compassionate and loving with an authentic embrace. She is a mentor who lifts others up in athletics and academics. Salem can warm your soul with a musical or a dramatic performance. But most importantly, Salem will lift your name in a quiet prayer on your behalf in your time of need or just because she feels led to do so.

What do you want us to know about dyslexia?
A little bit more about me and my dyslexia is that I was diagnosed in the third grade because we could start to tell a difference from me and the other students. From that point on I knew I was different from everybody else in the classroom but that didn't stop me from working twice as hard and still getting top of my class. Most people didn't even know I had dyslexia. But I believe that my dyslexia is why I can talk in front of people and why I can persevere through any crisis. Dyslexia has quite a few downsides but when you compare them to what you get out of it I wouldn't trade having dyslexia for anything.

What do you think are your best leadership qualities?
I believe that the best qualities to have so that you can be a great leader would be to have a level head but also show everybody that you mean business. Also, I believe that you must be willing to make sacrifices of your own so that your team is better qualified for the job. To be a good leader you must also be a team player which can be very hard at times. Right now, I have been trying to improve on making sacrifices of my own so that my team can get better and grow. Also, I've been trying to get to know everybody that works with me better so that I can be a better leader for them. It can be hard being a leader because everyone won't like you and you will have to deal with all the problems that are thrown your way. But it's better to look at all the amazing things you're getting out of it than the bad.

Why do you love being in leadership roles?
The whole reason why I take every opportunity to be in a leadership role is the feeling that you get when you meet all the new people and other leaders that are in your group. But what I believe is the best feeling is whenever you can get up in front of everybody and speak. Speaking can be the scariest part of being a leader. But getting up in front of a crowd and speaking or when you're in the huddle rallying your whole team up for the big game is the best feeling ever. I'm most passionate about speaking about things that are extremely important to me so that I can spread my message to as many people as I can.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them that they should trust their guts and to take the leap of faith out into the world. Also, I will tell them that they must believe in themselves if they want to get anywhere because that is a key trait into success.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself either in college getting a degree or in the field of Christian ministry.

3 Things on your bucket list
Going to Germany, skydiving, and going to Grease

Who do you find inspiring?
My biggest inspiration is my parents because they have helped me through everything but also my coaches from basketball inspire me. My coach Mike Russell and jazz (Jazmine Charles) are two of my biggest inspirations in life. They inspire me every day to be a better person and to always try and never give up. They push me to be the best that I can be.

Sophia Gardner

Sophia Gardner – Pennsylvania
Nomination and Photography by Tish Oconnor Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sophia Gardner - Four State Medals in track by the end of Sophomore year was no small feat after working through a shattered pelvis and asthma. The mental toughness she was forced to adopt was her greatest task of all. Personal responsibility, fortitude, and tenacity are just a few of the unexpected traits that were cultured when she could have simply given up. Now, she passes these invaluable lessons on to the younger athletes at the camps she volunteers for and to her teammates on the track and basketball teams. Being a inspiration and mentor is one of her greatest honors and achievements.

Tell us about your injury and recovery. What kept you going?

Faith. That is what kept me going. My injuries could have been career ending, according to the doctors, but I refused to accept this defeat. I loved track, jumping, and my team too much to accept this as my fate. Athletics has always given me a sense of family and accomplishment. I had obliterated my pelvis, shattering it into pieces. My hip and groin were injured too. The road to recovery was long and arduous. I fought hard and came back even stronger. God is the only reason I soar through the air, despite the obstacles that try to hold me back.

What are the camps you volunteer for and what do you do there? What do you love most about it?
To have knowledge is fruitless unless you are going to share it with others. Vacation Bible School and a sprint/agility camp for young athletes have been how I give back. At VBS, I guide and mentor children of varying ages as they grow their faith in God through fun and educational activities. At the sprint/agility camp, I assist in coaching young athletes as they improve their athletic skills. These camps bring me so much joy because I can share the Word of God with everyone in my community, as well as mentor young athletes as they pursue their dreams.

Share with us about your track and basketball careers.
Basketball has taught me so much about teamwork and toughness. I believe basketball is a metaphor for life. You have to trust your teammates, think quickly, be tough, and put in the work when no one is looking. It has been a great cross trainer for track both mentally and physically. My basketball team has won district and conference championships and been state qualifiers. While basketball teaches me about working as a team, track teaches me how to rely on myself. Earning four state medals, I keep striving to top myself and put in extra hours to be better than I was yesterday.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
A piece of advice that I would love to share with other aspiring teens would be to stay focused on your goals, no matter how lonely or difficult the journey is. There will always be people that want you to fail and situations that hinder your abilities, but it is vital to anyone, especially aspiring females, to push through setbacks that may seem impossible. You have to come from a place of discipline, not emotion. And you have to draw faith from God even when the odds seem like they are stacked against you.

Picture
Photography by Tish Oconnor Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Successful, happy, accomplished, and giving back. I understand that you first have to accomplish great things to be able to teach great things. I plan to achieve and learn in the field of marketing and advertising at the University of Pittsburgh, while striving to be the best I can be on the track team. I would then love to mentor young girls in a professional environment showing them how athletics, hard work, and faith can give them a beautiful life. I hope to inspire others to focus on their responsibilities and give back so they can live their dream life too.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I pray that my perseverance and faith inspire other teens. I want others to know that it is an acquired skill to not accept the bad things that happen to us, and to push through obstacles even when the outcome looks hopeless. Injuries, setbacks, and failures exist, but to know that God will only challenge us to allow our faith to shine through is the lesson I hope to pass on. It’s not about winning the medal, it’s the lessons along the journey that make us stronger and wiser.

I am extremely passionate about softball. One day I hope to play at the college level. I am currently on a select team, Texas Swat. This year will be my third year. While I work extremely hard to grow and be the best ball player I can I push academically even harder. This week I will be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. I'm so excited about my accomplishment. I set my goal from day one and never looked back.

What did you need to do to make sure you got into NJHS?
You must maintain a 94 percent cumulative average from 6th grade - current semester.
Leadership, service, character, citizenship by activities and teacher recommendation all play a part.

The honor and extra self-push to maintain this status as I plan to make NHS in High School.

Tell us about your softball ball career.
I have been on my select ball team since the age of 9. Short stop is my favorite and most played position. I have also played 2nd and outfield. My favorite memories have got to be the three championship rings we have accumulated and everything that got us there.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it? Overcoming the fear of breaking my arm and getting the strength back to excel in softball. I have broken my arms 3 times. It took an extra push from my parents, coaches, and myself to get confident and succeed.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up on yourself, the sky is the limit.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I’ll be graduating High School and off to College. My dream is to play college ball. My career path is to become a Pediatrician. This is one of the biggest reason I strive to excel in academics.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Sewing and crocheting is another favorite of mine.

What are your greatest achievements?
This past year I received First place in the Texas Soil and Water Conservation Essay. I also won 1st place at the Local, State and National level photography contest “Blessed is the Peacemaker”. Student Council is another favorite. I have been a Class Representative in grades 4-6 and Student Council President this year.
