How did you get the idea to start your nonprofit Vanilla Feeds Tomorrow?
I had just finished watching a news segment about the long lines at food banks around the country and I went to the kitchen to make my “Vanilla Brownies” and as I added the vanilla it hit me. I could sell vanilla extract to help support these food banks.

How did you decide that you were going to bottle and sell vanilla extract, rather than any other food or ingredient?
I have always enjoyed the flavor that vanilla can bring to your baking. Also, with the quarantine people started baking more and they required more vanilla extract.

Where will the profits that you make go to?
All profits are donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. I choose to donate to them because they are such an amazing organization. Their range of service is just incredible, they have so many different programs, and they can turn a one-dollar donation into 3 meals.

Is this nonprofit something that you hope to continue for many years even after the COVID-19 pandemic is over?

I see myself doing this for the foreseeable future. This need won’t end when there is a vaccine or the pandemic has ended.

When did you start volunteering at food banks? What inspired you to start doing this?
I had classmates in school who were truly hungry. It has bothered me as long as I can remember. I have been volunteering at food banks/pantries for many years. As a 7-year-old, I would work at a soup kitchen through my grandma’s church. I would donate bananas, my favorite fruit, to a local food pantry along with monetary donations from my allowance starting in Kindergarten.

How can people around the country and the world help food banks in their areas like you are doing?
To help the currently overwhelmed food banks in your local areas you can donate money, volunteer, or donate food. Reach out and contact your local food banks/ pantries for specific needs or volunteer opportunities. They would appreciate the help very much, and you would be helping your community.

William will be featured in issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!

Tanna Leeds - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Sharla Leeds
Photography by Kelly Anne Style
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination:  Tanna Leeds was on the high school drill team all four years and an officer for the last two years. Drill Team comes with many activities, deadlines, and hard work. She had to learn self-discipline and responsibility to maintain her grades and outside activities. After having a serious dance injury, she had to learn how to push forward, deal with her plans being changed and do it with grace and a smile on her face. She will be attending Stephen F Austin to become an Elementary teacher. She has a big heart and a love for children.

How old were you when you joined the drill Team and what do you love about it?
I've always loved to dance ever since I was a little girl. I joined the dance team when I was in 6th grade and fell in love with being a part of a team and the sisterhood it creates. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to continue dancing in High school.

What are some of your favorite performances with your drill team?
A big thing for High School drill teams is getting the privilege to dance on the football field during half time. I always loved being able to go out on the field under the Friday night lights with my team and doing our traditional walkout on the field to Deep in the Heart of Texas. Another one of my favorite performances was to the song "Rescue" by Lauren Daigle. The dance really told a story by my team dancing together to show that you are never alone and any situation you are faced with you have support, love and will be rescued no matter the struggle.

What responsibilities come with being an officer of your drill team? What is an officer and how did you get this role?
The responsibility of being an officer is to be a role model for the dancers on our team and help show them accountability, responsibility, and organization skills. We had to go through a tryout process with an interview to see if we had what it took to be an officer. We put together a board with our theme and a book of our ideas that would be used throughout the year.

What specific dance injury did you get and how did you push through this and move forward?
I severed my ACL and my Medial Meniscus dancing at a pep rally doing a high kick routine. It was a heartbreaking and tough situation I never expected to be dealing with. I learned how to stay strong and not lose sight of who I am by the struggles I faced. I kept motivating the team no matter if I was sitting on the bleachers cheering them on. It is all about how you handle the situation and preserver.

Why do you want to become an Elementary School teacher? Why do you love working with children so much?
I have always had a passion for helping kids and working with them. Last summer I gave up my 18th birthday party to go to the Dominican Republic on a mission trip. I was able to spend time with the kids in the community who didn't grow up having a lot or getting love from their parents. It really touched my heart knowing I was making such an impact on those kids and I knew then I wanted to be a teacher.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t let others bring you down or worry about what others think. Be true to yourself and keep God first.

Picture
Photography by Kelly Anne Style

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?

Hopefully I will be starting my first year teaching and trying to make a difference in the life of a child.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
This is something I continue to work on every day. A planner works really well. Making sure I have my week planned out is important so that I don’t miss anything.

3 Things on your bucket list?
I would like to go on another mission trip. Go to Hawaii, and I want to make sure that I graduate from college.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
There are a lot of very smart kids in school. They work hard and make good grades. There are a lot of other kids that work hard and still struggle in school. It does not come easy to everyone. We need to make sure that others understand you can still be a good student and be proud of yourself even if you do not have a 4.0 GPA. Be proud of who you are!!

Ruby Tilghman

Ruby Tilghman - Florida
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Nancy Tilghman
Photography by Matt Boyd Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The nomination: Ruby Tilghman, is a girl boss, founding her own nonprofit, Many Mini Musicians at 12 years old. She has a passion for Fine Arts and uses youth concerts to raise money for Fine Arts funding in Public Schools. Ruby has recently written a children’s book entitled “Ruby’s Recital.” This book serves to tell a portion of Ruby’s story of continuing to search until you find your passion, to highlight the impact that a teacher can have on a student’s life and most importantly to open the line of communication about the importance of fine arts programs in schools. Ruby has had the opportunity to advocate for increased Fine Arts funding at the state capitol, host fundraising concerts that feature young performers, and meet educators who are working hard to make sure that every student has access to Arts education!
Picture
Photography by Nancy Tilghman

Tell me about the nonprofit organization you started, and what it’s about?
Many Mini Musicians is the nonprofit organization that I started at twelve years old as a result of a civics project! I was asked to identify a need in my community and address it, so the need that I identified is the need for music in the life of students. I began hosting caroling nights and karaoke parties for kids in my community to spark their interest in the Arts, but once the project was over, I knew that I wanted to do more. I started to shift my focus to fundraising for public school music programs because that is where I initially found my passion for music and I knew that this was the best way to impact children in my community. Many Mini Musicians’ mission is now to fund Fine Arts in public schools and create opportunities for students to experience the Arts. In the last 3 years, we have raised over twelve thousand dollars for Fine Arts Programs in public school through fundraising concerts that feature young performers.

What inspired your passion for Fine Arts and in what ways have you raised money for funding in public schools?
Music is now a very important part of my life, but it took me a while to discover my passion for music. My elementary school music teacher, Mrs. Delmar, was one of the first people to encourage me to pursue my interest in music, and she is the reason I found my passion so early in life. Because of her impact in my life, it was clear to me just how important music programs are in our schools. Through Many Mini Musicians, I wanted to be able to support music programs that inspire students like me every day, so I started hosting fundraising concerts that benefit public school music programs. Our biggest concerts of the year are the Hello Summer Concerts which features young performers! At the end of our fundraising season each year, Many Mini Musicians awards grants to music programs in need.

Picture
Photography by Nancy Tilghman

How have you had opportunities to start other organizations like the Youth Community Arts Alliance in different communities to expand fine arts?
Many Mini Musicians’ regional impacts on fine arts programs have been incredible but I started the Youth Community Arts Alliance because I wanted to empower other student artists to create their own Community Arts Project or Initiative. The Youth Community Arts Alliance provides resources and opportunities for student artists to impact their communities through the Arts in the form or service projects. My hope is that this will help them overcome obstacles they may face in building their project and provide a network of like-minded students to connect with. By involving students from all over the nation, we can continue to share the message of the importance of Fine Arts in our communities.

What do you love most about organizing and marketing youth events and concerts?
The thing I love most about organizing these events is the people I am able to meet and network with! By contacting young musicians about performing in our shows or asking local leaders to be a part of our event, I’m able to make some really incredible connections and friends. Some of the musicians that perform in Hello Summer and our other concerts are people that I perform with on a regular basis now, and I know that those connections wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for Many Mini Musicians and these concerts!

In what ways could you inspire others to find their passion in life, and how are you able to impact others through your story and all that you’re involved in?

I hope that by sharing a little of my story in my book, “Ruby’s Recital” people will see that my path hasn’t been straight. I tried every activity, extra-curricular and instrument before I found what I was passionate about and that ultimately lead to me founding my non-profit, Many Mini Musicians. I want to inspire others to keep searching until they find their passion. Find the thing that makes you want to put in the extra work, the thing that you want to share with the world. Everyone is gifted with a talent and a passion it may just take some perseverance for you to find it!

What is your book “Ruby’s Recital” about, and how it has highlighted your journey and passions in life?
Ruby’s Recital is about a young girl named Ruby who wants to perform in her school’s talent show but doesn’t know which instrument to play. Ruby tries every instrument until he finds the one that is “Just right!” This is a story about perseverance and finding your passion. As a kid, I tried everything. I played soccer and softball, I did gymnastics and dance, but I didn’t find what I loved until I started playing piano. Through this book, I wanted to share the message of the importance of finding what you love, even if you have to try everything!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them not to be afraid to take a chance. It’s true that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take! You don’t know how far you can go or what you can accomplish unless you take a chance on yourself!

Picture
Photography by Nancy Tilghman
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I will be finishing up my undergraduate degree and preparing for a career in the medical field. My hope is that I can continue to grow Many Mini Musicians and that we can have an impact on Fine Arts funding in public schools at the national level.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to play piano! It has been a part of my life since I was in the 3rd grade. My piano is my place of escape and rest!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I’m actually fluent in American Sign Language. I was blessed with the opportunity to take American Sign Language as my foreign language credit at my high school and I’ve continued to use it.

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to secure a national partnership for Many Mini Musicians.
I want to be able to provide a copy of my book to every Elementary School music teacher in the state of Florida.
I would love to one day compete for the title of Miss America.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I’ve recently become a Brand Ambassador for Advanced Recovery Systems. I am very excited about partnering with them for Real Talk, which is a comprehensive, educational program designed for high school and college students that discusses the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. This is an important message because there is value in having a hobby like music or a passion that gives you a reason to continue to be the best version of yourself and make healthy choices for your body.

 Davis Cochran - Oklahoma
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Amy Cochran
Photography by Brittany Stover Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Davis Cochran is a graduate of Norman High School in Norman, OK and a proud member of the Chickasaw Nation. Davis will be headed to Colorado School of Mines this Fall to study Mechanical Engineering. Davis enjoyed being a member of the Academic Team at NHS and earned an All State medal each year culminating with being named a member of the All-State team his senior year. Davis always take the time to be kind, from tutoring a friend in AP Calculus the entire school year to buying the milk for our church's food pantry each week.

What is the academic team that you were involved in at NHS, and how did it affect your high school career and what you want to accomplish in the future?
The academic team at Norman High School is a quiz bowl style competition team made up of students from 9th through 12th grades. Anyone can be on the team who has an interest in any of the topics that we compete with, such as: Math, Humanities, Science, History, etc. A senior member of the team approached me and invited me to come to a practice my freshman year. After seeing the practice, I decided that I want to join the team and I’ve been hooked ever since. Being on the academic team affected me in many ways. First, it was a great way to meet new people who I might not have met any other way. It also encouraged me to broaden my horizons in relation to what I chose to study and learn about. Lastly, the time spent practicing and competing with this group of people really bonded us together and we formed lasting friendships that I hold dear. I feel that my experiences with the academic team helped to shape what I want to study in college, which is Mechanical Engineering. It also really gave me confidence to push myself and apply to a school like Colorado School of Mines where I will be attending in the Fall.

What are some accomplishments you have achieved through being so involved in your academics throughout high school?
Being so heavily involved in my academics throughout high school really shaped me into who I am today. I accomplished many things during this time. Having good grades and a high GPA was one of my top goals and I was able to achieve that through a lot of hard work and perseverance. Also, I was named as a member of the National Honor Society for my entire high school career. As a member of the Chickasaw Nation, I’m also proud to have been named to the Oklahoma Native American Student Honor Society all four years as well. Both my freshman and sophomore years, I was named to the All State Froshmore Academic Team. That was a huge honor and I didn’t expect to get it my freshman year. I ended my senior year with being chosen as a member of the All State Academic Team. Being chosen for that really meant a lot to me. Additionally, I was named as an Oklahoma Academic Scholar. I have also been named as an AP Scholar with Distinction, which is nice because I really enjoyed all the AP classes I took in high school. I’m very thankful for the opportunities and awards I have been given through the past four years. Focusing on academics has been incredibly rewarding for me and led me to follow my passion for learning.

Tell me about the challenges you have faced through having ADHD, and the ways you have overcome them throughout school.
Although having ADHD can be quite challenging and makes school harder than it needs to be, it does not make school impossible. I was diagnosed with ADHD in the first grade, and that was the start of my journey with this disability. During my elementary years it was exceedingly difficult to find a medication that worked and develop coping mechanisms while dealing with the side effects of the medication. For the most part, I still did well academically, although I struggled with certain subjects from time to time. Socially, I began to separate from my peers because I was emotionally immature and hyperactive. In middle school, we were able to finally find a medication that would help me focus without the awful side effects like weight loss and depression. I feel that I was successful in middle school due to the right medication as well as getting the support of an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Having an IEP gave me the support of extra time to complete tests and take my tests in a quiet place. I worked hard and made a 4.0 GPA during all three years of middle school. My social life was a bit of a roller coaster, but I eventually found a group of friends that accepted me. During my four years of high school, I took many honors and AP courses which was quite a challenge for someone with ADHD. I quickly found out it wasn’t as easy to make A’s as it was in middle school. I was fortunate to have some amazing teachers who became mentors to me, and it made all the difference in the world to have that type of support. My Chemistry teacher was also my academic team coach and Mr. Powell took me under his wing right off from my freshman year. He really challenged me academically and socially. I also had a wonderful Physics teacher who also coached the Robotics team, Mr. Askey. He also really took the time to get to know me and provide a safe place for me to grow. I will say that high school can be a difficult place for those with disabilities, but with the support of great teachers it makes the whole experience so much better.

How have you given back to your community through your church or your school?

I have enjoyed giving back to my community by being involved in my church youth group. My youth group regularly volunteers at various food banks. I started volunteering my time in middle school and quickly realized how rewarding it is to feel like you are making a difference and really helping others. I went on several mission trips out of our state, but the only local trip was to a small town after a large wildfire. We went there for three days and we repaired trailer homes that had been damaged by the fires. It really made me feel good to know that I was helping to restore the homes of the less fortunate. This past senior school year, I took the volunteer position of purchasing and stocking the milk for my church’s food pantry each week. This was not an overly difficult job, but it was super rewarding to feel like I had a small part in providing something meaningful to the many needy people who rely on the food pantry each week. Through my school, I had the opportunity to be a member of the Link Crew which was a program that helped integrate freshmen into our high school. We were partnered with another member of the crew and given a small group of freshmen to mentor. At the beginning of the school year, we would gather the day before school started to help the freshman with their orientation. We would also check on them from time to time and see if they needed any kind of help with school. We also volunteered our time at certain activities like parent/teacher conferences or local school carnivals. It was fun to get to know the other kids in the program while helping others. Lastly, I had such a good experience in high school volunteering that I definitely know that I would like to continue to find volunteer opportunities in college.

What advice would you give to other teens to inspire them to achieve their dreams, and how they can overcome challenges they’ve faced?
When it comes to achieving your dreams, I would say don’t ever limit yourself. No matter where you come from or what obstacles are in your way, you can achieve anything you put your mind to. I think the most important thing to remember is to set goals for yourself and work through them one at a time. Don’t try to do everything at once because that can be very overwhelming, and you might give up. I also think it’s really important to reflect on what you want in your future and not what other people around you want. It’s easy as a teen to want to please your friends and family, but it’s really important to understand yourself and what you really want to get out of life in the future. We also tend to get caught up in the here and now, but we need to be thinking ahead. As far as overcoming challenges, I think having a strong support system is crucial. This does not necessarily have to be your family, but it’s great if it can be. You can also find wonderful support and mentorship through your teachers, coaches, clergy, and peers. I think all teens need to have someone they can go to who will listen to them and provide guidance. It’s also important to set small goals for yourself when you are faced with a challenge. This will help you to know that you can still reach your dreams even when things seem difficult. Nothing is ever impossible.

Who do you find inspiring?

I find my great great grandfather to be the most inspiring to me. He was a Chickasaw Indian and he grew up in the Chickasaw Nation here in Oklahoma. He attended an Indian boarding school and was highly intelligent and hard working. When he was graduating high school, he and some of his peers were taken from their families and put on a train headed to Vanderbilt University in Nashville. When they got there the citizens were lined up to see the “wild Indians” arrive. I guess they were surprised to see young men in suits get off the train. The young men had to attend a boarding school in the neighboring town where they could be taught Latin as it was a requirement to attend Vanderbilt at that time. The following year my great great grandfather started college at Vanderbilt. He ended up having to leave due to illness and moved across the country to California to finish his degree at Stanford. He also ended up earning a law degree as well. Then, he came back to Oklahoma to practice law. He ended up serving as a county judge and helped build the law school at the University of Oklahoma. My great great grandfather is such an inspiration to me because he overcame so many things in his life. He was highly intelligent and worked hard to achieve great things. From the time that I was little, my Mom made sure that I knew his story and respected my Chickasaw heritage. I am a proud member of the Chickasaw Nation and I only hope that I can represent our tribe in a way that would make him proud.

Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination:  Dasha Derkach is an aspiring ballerina, but she wasn’t born any of the natural ballet body type things! (flexibility, feet, strength, etc.) Dasha has a passion for ballet and she started working hard and figured out some ways to improve everything she doesn’t have! After figuring out ways to improve these things, she realizes how there are some kids out there which want to learn ballet, but unfortunately can’t afford it! She now has a YouTube channel where she makes videos for everyone where she teaches the basics of ballet, ballet classes, and all of her tips and tricks which she uses to improve the things that Dasha didn’t naturally have!
Picture

How old were you when you started ballet and why do you love it so much?
I started ballet at the age of 5 and I have been dancing now for 8 years! My favorite thing about ballet is performing on stage. I love to perform in front of audiences and entertain them with the beauty of ballet!

You were not born with natural ballet dancer abilities. How did you push through this?
No, I wasn’t born with any natural ballet/dancer talent and I did 2 simple steps to push through this major obstacle. First I found different exercises and stretches which focus on the muscle or joints that I needed to improve! Second is consistency, I continued to do these exercises and stretches over a long period of time!

Picture
How did you get the idea to start a YouTube channel for kids who cannot afford ballet lessons?
The idea to start my YouTube channel mainly came from my dad. He asked me how easy it was to create a channel and then gave me the idea for it! I knew that his idea for creating lessons for aspiring dancers who can’t afford to take regular classes was going to help and impact a lot of kids and adults!

What advice would you give kids who are struggling with dance and ballet?
Keep on trying, working hard, failing, and then getting back up and try it again! Over time all your hard work will show up, I promise! Keep on striving for your goals! If you continue to work hard then you will accomplish them!

Picture
Is ballet something that you would like to continue as you get older and maybe have a career out of? What is the end goal?
My end goal is to be able to get into a professional ballet company, and dance and perform in front of bigger audiences, while still impacting kids and adult lives with my lessons on my YouTube channel!
Picture
How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized by planning out my days by the hours! In the morning I spend 15 minutes writing out my whole plan for the day and the exact time it needs to be done.

How did you get start volunteering? Why do you love volunteering so much?
I started volunteering the summer before my Freshmen year at Tanner Health Systems located in Carrollton, GA. I enjoy volunteering my time in the medical field because it brings me great joy to help people during a time of need!

What inspired you to volunteer so much in the medical field?
I have always dreamed of becoming a nurse. Volunteering in the medical field helps me to become more acquainted with the daily duties of a nurse and helps me to observe professionalism and good bedside manner. It has always been my heart’s desire to take care of others and help them to become physically and mentally stronger.

What is it like volunteering at your local hospital? Walk me through a typical day volunteering.

Last summer, I was very fortunate to get to volunteer in two areas of the hospital. First, I got to help prep the OR surgical rooms. There I worked with a team that made sure proper measures were taken to prepare the OR for surgery. Secondly, I was able to volunteer on the maternity floor. I helped mothers who had recently delivered get up and walk, checked vitals, and helped feed patients with physical disabilities. I also worked at the front help desk where I directed the family members of patients to the correct rooms for visitation.

What was going through your head when you won the Barbara James Service Award? What does this award mean to you?
When I was honored with the Barbra James Service Award, I felt so humbled to be able to accept such an amazing award. This award is a true symbol of servant hood! That is what I want to be the most, a humble servant of the Lord.

PicturePhotography by Strawberry Hill Photography

What is like getting to model and having your photos featured in different stores?
Modeling is not always easy for me because I am actually pretty shy! However, it is an area that I continue to work on in order to push me outside my comfort zone. I have really come to enjoy it. I truly love photography, so it’s always exciting when planning photo shoots and deciding on the best locations and backgrounds! I really enjoy doing a collaborative photo shoot with other models my age! That is always so much fun!

Diamond Orin

Picture

Diamond Orin - Wisconsin
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination & Photography by Tammy Schmitt
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Diamond Orin is very inspiring because she had been bullied since sixth grade and continues to be, but she chooses to always find the positive out of a bad situation. She uses modeling to cope from all the negative and make it positive by being who she is and not letting anyone change that. She also swims which helps her cope with it and be able to help others in need throughout their troubles. She will continue to grow and inspire many young children, athletes, and even us adults to be ourselves and not let others break us down.
Picture
How did you cope with being bullied?
I cope with being bullied by modeling, swimming and staying busy with my friends and family. During those times I can be myself, in my own world and do what I love best. I show who I am and who I want to be without letting anyone else’s opinion change that.

What advice do you have for other people who are currently being bullied & where you are today?
Be yourself and don’t let the other people bring you down because they are not going to help you succeed in life; only you can do that. You are perfect just the way you are.
Work hard and never give up on your dreams. It may not be easy or exactly what you want but just getting a small opportunity means so much. The small opportunities open the chance for the big ones.
Continue doing what you love to do because it will show the haters you are unstoppable. An example is I get a lot of negative comments from track (jumping and sprinting) but instead of quitting I kept doing what I love and I have gotten the opportunity to go represent the USA in Australia next year for track and field!
Picture
What does it mean to you knowing you are such an inspiration to others?
It means a lot to know I am an inspiration to others as it gives me high hopes that I am loved and can encourage others in the world, and learn from them too! I love to know that I can help others going through the same things as me.

When did you get started modeling and what do you love so much about doing it?
I started modeling in sixth grade and my favorite thing about it was that I could be myself behind the camera and not have to pretend I’m someone I’m not. I can truly express who I am through the lens.

Picture
Tell me more about you swimming. When did you start and how does it help you cope with everything going on in your life?
I started Freshman year in gym class and then decided to join the team after I was approached by the coaches. Swimming helps me cope with any negative energy I come across because I am in my own world and can let go of all the negative energy by the haters through practice and races. I use the energy to push myself harder to do better and prove the haters wrong.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Gaining confidence is the hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished. I did it by believing in myself and listening to my parents every time they said, “Stay Strong” and “We love you.” I knew who I wanted to be and that was to be my true self so I continued to do that every day by loving myself.

Picture
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future is to travel the world and inspire others. I want to work with children and also be a public speaker to help others get through what I went through.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I enjoy hanging with my family as they see the true me and push me to be myself every day.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I like to use a binder and make lists of what I have to do and have to get done. In the binder is my schedule, my to do list, and some extra stuff I would like to do so I don’t feel overwhelmed with the main things on my plate.
Picture
3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list is go to Paris, inspire others, and go to Disney

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom inspiring as she has taught me to be myself and to not let what the bullies say get to me. She has taught me to love life every day and live life to the fullest. To remind myself of who I am from the inside out.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring to others because I go through a lot of things that many others are today, but I don’t sugar coat it. It is truly bad, but instead of letting it break me down I use it to help tell my story and help others in the same situation as me.

Paige Mercer

Paige Mercer - Ohio
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Stephanie Mercer
Photography by DSW Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Paige Mercer is the reigning Teen Miss Ohio Earth and will be competing at the national Miss Earth USA Pageant for the title of Teen Miss Earth USA in Las Vegas in August. She is a 16-years-old sophomore who maintains a 4.0 GPA. She is also a varsity cheerleader, plays the violin, and volunteers in her community as often as she can.
Paige loves being a role model for younger girls and is pursuing her dream of modeling/pageantry!

What is it like being Teen Miss Ohio Earth, what was the process like to get this title?
Being Teen Miss Ohio Earth is so rewarding to me. I have a platform and a voice that I can use to connect with my community and educate, and that is what I have always wanted to do. I love being a role model for young girls. Wearing my crown and sash is like a dream come true. I am so blessed and thankful that I have such an opportunity to inspire people to change the world like I do.
The day I won my first title is one I will never forget. My state pageant was in Parkersburg, West Virginia. It was a fabulous weekend that I got to spend with beautiful girls who I will cherish forever. We completed a quick eco project and spent time getting to know each other. The next day was the most exciting, the interview and pageant. I will never forget answering my onstage questions and walking the runway. It was such an exhilarating experience. When I look back at that weekend, I see true friendship and sisterhood. We are not just beauties, we are beauties for a cause!!

Tell me more about your platform From the Ground Up and why it is so important to you!
My platform, From the Ground Up, is all about making the earth pure once again, working to restore its beauty, and using what the Earth gave us in its simplest form. I am all about eating and raising organic, non-GMO crops to nourish our bodies by how they were intended to be nourished and to not let the body be toxified with chemicals and unknown substances that can harm our health and our spirits. It is so important to me because people need to be educated on what pesticides are doing to our bodies and that GMOs have no long-term testing, so we don’t know what they can do to us, not to mention how these techniques are harming the environment. I feel as a society we have really lost our insight as what we are as human beings, and through my platform, I want to regain our clarity for us and the Earth.

Picture

What is a typical pageant like, walk us through the process of preparing for one and what happens the day of!
A pageant is just exhilarating! In the preparation stage you must search for and gather all your wardrobe, which is a blast because who doesn’t love shopping? Also, you must work on all your techniques from walking and posing to speaking. Most importantly, you have to educate yourself on what you stand for and all that you may be asked, so you are properly prepared and professional. When you finally get there, you apply all you have prepared for, and take home that title you have worked so hard for.
First, you get your hair and makeup done, which is when you really start to feel like a star. You then go into an interview where the judges just speak to you and ask you some questions to get to know you better. The actual pageant starts next where you answer some onstage questions and walk in your swimsuit, evening gown, etc. Last but not least, your crowning moment where you come together with your sister title holders and start your new journey.

What is it like knowing that you are such a big role model for younger children?
It feels so empowering to know that younger children look up to you and all that you do. The young are the ones that will be changing the world in the years to come, so it is important that they have the proper role models and education to do good. Being such a big role model makes me feel good about the future because I know I will steer the youth in the right direction.

Picture
Photography by DSW Photography

Do you hope to continue doing pageants in the future? What is one goal that you have for yourself?
Honestly, I have no idea what my future in pageantry holds. I love where I am right now and what I am doing in the Earth system. Based off of my experience I have right now, I would love to continue to do pageants because of all the benefits it presents. But I also want to focus on my modeling and whatever life throws at me in the future. One goal I have for myself, no matter where I am or what I’m doing, is to just continue to inspire! I want to love what I do in life and to make others happy. I definitely want some kind of career in fashion, because I am so passionate about it and nothing makes me feel more thrilled!

Picture
Photography by Stephanie Mercer

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to you would be to stay true to who you are, do not try to blend in with others. Your uniqueness is what makes the world go round. If you manifest your dreams and know that you were given everything you need in your life, you can do anything. Shoot for the stars, and never settle to being average.

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to travel to Italy soon and maybe even live there someday. I would love to experience the breathtakingly beautiful culture of Italy and all it has to offer.
Going to or being in a New York Fashion Week show. I live for the atmosphere there and I am infatuated with fashion. It would really be a dream come true.
I would love to meet Taylor Swift because she is one of my biggest idols. I basically grew up with her listening to her music and have felt so connected to her my whole life.

Nomination by Jenna Miller
Photography by Cara Jonas Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jordan Kayla Patterson is a hard worker. Even during tough times she still manages to push through. I am Jordan’s best friend and she always talks about how she would love to attend the university of Louisville for nursing. She would love the opportunity to be able to help people and she is open minded to many ideas. She has also participated in a fashion marketing class that hosted a fashion show. Her class chose her as the leader because Jordan has great communication skills & plans very well.

How did you keep pushing through life's tough obstacles?

I had a lot of family and schools issues that put me in a bad point in life and I was sad 24/7, and was gaining weight which almost caused me to lose my life. But through it all I’ve been able to put a smile on my face, help people who went through the same thing I did, be able to focus on me, and gain the self-confidence I needed.

Tell me about the fashion marketing class you took! What was it like helping to host a fashion show?
Fashion marketing was such a fun class. Being put in charge to host the fashion show was incredibly stressful, but I made sure everyone was doing their part, made sure we had clothing from different boutiques, made sure we had sponsors, ect. I had such a fun time through it all with the help of my friends in the class of only 13 - 12 were girls and 1 boy.  We all put our hearts into this show and it turned out amazing!!

What is a typical day volunteering at St. Elizabeth like?
Volunteering at St. Elizabeth was such an amazing experience. I learned new things in radiology and ultrasound. A typical day in the hospital was checking in patients who came for an x-ray and putting in another appointment for them to come back, but some days I was switched to ultrasounds if radiology was slow and had no one there. Being able to switch was really amazing because I was able to take a look at each ultra sound being made and what I was looking at was so cool.

What has inspired you to want to pursue a career in nursing?
I think looking at today’s society there are a lot of people who need more medical help not just in the United States but in different countries. I am blessed to even be accepted to volunteer at St. Elizabeth because I want just a more general background on what I would like to do as a career. I love being able to see the joy on people’s faces after giving them great care and helping them through what they are going through. I would love to be able to travel around the world and help more people who need the medical help.

Why is being in Inspiring Teens Magazine so important to you?
Being in inspiring Teen Magazine means so much to me because I went through such a hard process to being able to have self-love and confidence in myself.  I was able to grow and know my worth and I would love to spread that love and knowledge to girls and even guys going through the same thing as me. Being a model doesn’t mean to be a certain size, it means to be able to love you as who you are.

Emma Grace Buck – North Carolina
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Ashley Schenck Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Emma is dedicated to doing the right thing, following her faith as a Christian. She is in the progress of asking friends to purchase Bible's to be smuggled into North Korea on her quest to help others read the Word of God. Most recently out of 140 applicants Emma was one of the only two selected for a summer shadowing program at Levines Children's Hospital. Emma is pretty inspiring and a role model to many.

How has your Christian faith led you to inspiring others to purchase Bibles that will be smuggled to North Korea?

As a Christian, it is my duty to share with others the gospel so that they may walk with Christ. Many aren’t as lucky as we are, especially those in North Korea where bibles aren’t accessible. It was my mom who had originally found out about this organization called The Voice of the Martyrs on Facebook and I was all for it!

What inspired you to volunteer for Levine’s Children Hospital, while becoming one of the only two selected for their summer shadowing program?
For a long time I have felt a deep connection to this Hospital. One day in particular my little sister had gotten hurt and was taken to a Levine’s urgent care center. I saw how kindly the nurses had treated my sister so she wasn’t even scared. I couldn’t stop thinking about those nurses and the impact they must make in treating children every day. I had thought a lot about volunteering for Levine’s, and the next day I prayed that God would send me a sign to be sure that this is what he wanted. How strange it was when I was playing music at the time, an ad popped up about Levine’s Children Hospital with a link to a volunteer application! At that point I knew what I was supposed to do.

Tell me about the volunteer group Key Club you are a part of at your school and what it’s about.
Key Club is a group my school has had for a while. I wanted to get volunteer hours, so I signed up. I learned that it was not only a way to volunteer more, but it was also an opportunity to hang out with people who wanted to help others. An example of volunteering our school has done through key club would be assisting in packages for Operation Christmas Child, along with assistance during school functions.

In what ways have you given back to your community through volunteer work and organizations?
I have volunteered in a number of ways such as working through key club, assisting for my church and vacation bible school, The Voice of the Martyrs, and the Stand Firm Warrior Foundation: “A nonprofit organization dedicated to help fighting childhood cancer”. I volunteered to help them with a Christmas party last December.

How can you inspire others to volunteer and make a difference in their communities?

I hope to be an example for others and inspire people to volunteer by showing my own efforts in volunteer work.

What does your faith mean to you, and how has it impacted who you are and how you live your life?
My faith is the most precious thing I have in my life. It has shaped me into the person I am today, and it is the foundation in which I build my hope for the future.

Brooke Marcum - Florida
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Leah S. Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Brooke has faced several challenges. Challenges like moving from Kentucky to Florida after her freshman year, when her dad lost his job, leaving Behind childhood friends and family. Most teens would have become bitter and angry. Not Brooke. She has the amazing ability to stay positive. Brooke handles life with such grace and beauty. She will always protect the innocent and chooses love over hate. She is a huge help to her community and does everything from babysitting to volunteer work. She is not your typical teen. She inspires her peers to be better simply by choosing to be kind. Also, Brooke has a 4.4 GPA.

Tell me about the different ways you have given back to your community through community service and volunteer work.

I am a member of my school’s Interact club and National Honors Society. Both organizations have given me wonderful opportunities to give back to my community through volunteer work.
One of my favorite volunteer opportunities is EarlyAct, which is an elementary school version of Interact. This club was started in my community this year. Through EarlyAct children are encouraged to start giving back to their communities at a young age. I am grateful for the opportunity to act as a role model for a younger generation and to foster a love of community service.
Another amazing opportunity I had was volunteering for Rise Against Hunger. The last time I was able to work with this organization, my fellow volunteers and I put together over 50,000 bags of food. I love working with this organization as a volunteer because we are able to help so many people by just giving a few hours of our time.

What opportunities have you gotten to help spread positivity and grace to others?
Every day is an opportunity to spread positivity and grace to others. Treating others with kindness and respect, even in small ways, is the best way to spread positivity and grace. Sometimes it’s as simple as smiling at someone in passing or voicing the complement you were thinking.

Picture
Photography by Leah S. Photography

Your freshman year of high school you moved from Kentucky to Florida. What was your experience like, and how did you overcome the challenges you faced along with it?
Honestly, it was a difficult time for me. I had to leave friends, family, and my home. I had a difficult time making friends at first because I am a fairly shy person, but when I started pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I was able to become friends with a great group, and I’m sure we will be lifelong friends.

What inspired your passion for your academic career of attending Florida State University in the fall, while also striving to obtain a doctorate of occupational therapy?
I have always had a natural passion and genuine love for learning. I am thrilled to be attending Florida State University in the fall. It was my top choice due to its excellent academics and exciting student life. I have chosen to pursue a career in occupational therapy because I was able to observe an occupational therapist while volunteering at a medical daycare. Through this experience, I fell in love with occupational therapy. Working hard in school has taught me discipline and made me a more motivated person. Because of my hard work I will be graduating in the top 15% of my class with a 4.4 weighted GPA.

Picture
Photography by Leah S. Photography

What advice would you give to others to inspire them to work hard for what they want, or some ways they can give back to their community?
My advice is that your life is your own and you should take charge of it. If there is something you want you should take initiative, work hard for it, believe in yourself, and ask for help when you need it. It won’t always be easy, everyone stumbles along the way but that’s part of the journey. As for community service, everyone should give back. I would advise you to join a local organization because that is an easy way to learn about and participate in community service. You could also simply google “volunteer opportunities near me”.

Lera Haydon - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Pink Lilly Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Lera was adopted and has been in the states for 6 years now. She speaks English, Russian and Ukrainian. She used to dance and never gave up on that.  Any senior that has made it out of this paramedic and was still able to keep their average up is so strong and inspiring.
Picture

What challenges have you had in your life and how did you overcome them?
The hardest thing I had to overcome is to live without parents most of my life, until a couple came to adopt me and my brother. Everything has changed for me and my brother. If it wasn’t for my parents then I wouldn’t be here today.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to other teens who are facing tough challenges in their lives like you did?
The advice I would give them is no matter how hard life hits you or brings you down there is always a way to get back up on top.

Picture
Photography not by Pink Lilly Photography

Tell me more about the different dance experiences you have had.
I have danced different kinds of dances but mostly waltzing, and some ballet. I also did modeling dances. I started dancing when I was 3 and danced until I was 13. Dances helped me be more elegant and made life fun.

Was it hard to learn 3 languages? What do you love the most about being able to speak in so many different languages?
It wasn’t hard to learn the first two languages but it was certainly hard to learn English because the teacher was always so hard and very critical about how I read or how I tried to pronounce things in English. But ever since I came to America and started 7th grade it started to become easier and faster, thanks to all the teachers and my parents.

What are some goals that you have for your future?
Some of the goals that I have for my future is to work for now and save money for college. The college I would like to attend is the culinary school and become a chef for a catering company.

Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: This girl constantly floods the room with excitement. She has always been a ray of sunshine in our family’s life, from helping around the house to volunteering outside the house. I know she is going to do amazing things one day for our community. She is a light within her school, where her peers know it is a safe place to coincide her if they ever need help with anything.

Who do you find inspiring?
Two people I find the most inspiring are both of my grandfathers. They have both shaped me into the person I am today by teaching me to be intelligent, caring, sympathetic as well as honest. Both men grew up very poor with little resources to help them succeed in life. They strived day in and day out to earn where they are today to raise a family and livelihood for their children. I hope to be just as strong as they were growing up one day. They have inspired me to help my community and show love towards everyone around me.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I have always tried to be the best version of myself all through grade school. I push myself to take advanced classes as well as be involved in organized clubs at my school. In 5 years, I would hope that I have completed graduate school at a University and continue my studies in the Medical field. I have always felt inspired to help children with special needs, so I hope in the near future I am able to pursue a degree in which I am able to help them as much as I can.

3 Things on your bucket list
I have always wanted to go on a mission trip to Columbia. The church organization I am a part of has taken many trips all around the world, but I have yet been able to go on one. I love immersing myself into new cultures and helping people who are in need.
Another thing I would love to do is see the Great Wall of China. I think it is amazing how something so miraculous was built so long ago with such little tools they had at the time. I cannot wait to see the wall with my own eyes.
Lasty, I want to learn how to surf one day. I believe surfing is just a fun activity to clear your mind and to focus on the situation at hand. I also love being in the water, so knowing how to surf would make it so much more fun.

The Nomination: Daniel Ayala exemplifies everything it takes to make it to a Prestigious Company one day. He is full of hard work, positive energy, determination and does what it takes to give back to others. Each week Daniel donates his time teaching a Men’s Ballet and conditioning class at St. Lucie Ballet. He has been a guest dancer with the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami, and he is also a Ballet In The City Ambassador where the mission is to present professional ballet performances, educational opportunities and events in cities around the nation, promoting and enhancing the culture of ballet. When did you first start dancing ballet, and what do you love most about it?
I started dancing at the age of 14 and I love that ballet is Artistry and Athleticism combined together.

What has your ballet journey been like as a male dancer, and what obstacles have you surpassed to get to where you are today?
Taking Ballet as a boy is hard enough but In my home country, Colombia I experienced a lot of bullying and there was always an expectation for me to be a soccer player. I think my biggest obstacle was to find the right studio to continue my pre-professional training.

Picture
Photography by Miranda Jade
What opportunities have you been a part of through dance, including being a Ballet in The City Ambassador and being a guest dancer for the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami? What were those experiences like?
It was amazing being a guest dancer in the cuban classical ballet of Miami because I got to be around of other principal dancers and I got to take classes and received feedback from retired dancers from The National Cuban Ballet. I love being a Ballet in The City ambassador because I want to share my story and experiences with other young male dancers and encourage them to follow their passion.

In what ways have you given back to your community, like dedicating your time to teaching new dancers?
Each Friday night I was donating my time to teach an exclusive male ballet class at St Lucie Ballet

Picture
Photography by Miranda Jade
What has been one of your favorite memories through ballet and through all that you have overcome to be the passionate dancer you are today?
One of my favorite moments is attending to the Youth American Grand Prix Regionals for the first time and winning first place in the Pas De Deux category and being invited to their New York Finals where only 2% of the top dancers get invited to dance.

What advice would you give to other teens that have a passion for dance or have gone through a similar experience as you?
Follow your passions and dreams and don’t let anybody decide what you’re going to do. Anything is possible if you have your mind on board.

Picture
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I’ve working to get my visa so I can take advantage of a unique job opportunity to teach and participate in a pre-professional pas de deux program. This would help me to continue training at a high level so that I can get a company position in my dream company the Royal Ballet and one day get to be a principal dancer.
