What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

My nomination covers all the community service I've done, but does not cover the benefits of this. With each volunteer hour comes a different kind of happiness. Not one you can buy or fake, but one created by making a difference in others lives.

What else would you like to talk about?
Another thing I would like to talk about is I just got accepted Early Action into The University of Georgia! This has been my dream college for as long as I can remember, and I am beyond excited to start in the fall. I finally feel like all my hard work in school is paying off.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
One topic I could talk about forever is mental health. I lost a close friend to suicide; since then this has been such an important factor in my life. I feel it is a priority to check up on others, and truly listen to what they have to say. No matter how unreasonable you may think someone else's problems are, you should always make them feel heard.

How did you find your photographer, JL Farmer Photography, LLC? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I met my photographer from my friends who were in her "Mod Squad" for female seniors in the area. Once I went to my first photo shoot with her, a Christmas shoot, I immediately knew I wanted to continue. Jennifer works so hard for every shoot making sure everything is inclusive of the teams wants as a whole. My favorite thing is no matter what the shoot is, we always have a good time!

What does it mean to you to have a true servant's heart?
In my opinion having a servant’s heart is helping others for the sole purpose of bringing them joy. This isn’t broadcasted all over social media for everyone to know you do a good deed, you do the good deed because you want to bring others joy. People light up when you offer to help without expecting anything in return because it’s not a very common thing we see in our world anymore. No matter how big or little the job, it doesn't matter.

What is a challenge you've faced recently and how did you succeed?
One challenge this year is definitely AP Calculus. The class itself is so hard, and requires so much extra time put in. I have struggled with trying to maintain a good grade. When I don’t understand things I go home and watch videos for hours trying to figure out what is going on. I have succeeded by studying for hours on end, and putting in the extra time required.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class this year is Adaptive PE. In this class we are paired with different special needs kids and we get to hangout with them. We can play games, do Just Dance, or just sit and look at pictures. I have learned so far this year how truly amazing some of those kids are. They run in class everyday with the biggest smiles and hugs. This class can turn any bad day to good.

What AP classes are you taking and why did you choose them?
This year I am taking AP Calculus, and AP Biology. Although I could have graduated my junior year I chose to stay in highschool to potentially earn college credits for free while I still had the opportunity. I chose AP Biology to give me some insight on what my future major would be like. I took AP Calculus to challenge myself, as I have already completed all the highschool math credits. Believe me this class is quite the challenge.

What sports do you play? Which is your favorite and why?

I play one sport, which is softball. I’ve played since third grade. Each summer of high school I put my all in for four hours each day in the Georgia heat. It is my favorite because I have learned so much from it. This sport taught me not to focus on how to be perfect every single second, but to just have fun and a good outcome will follow.

What is a favorite memory with your teammates?
My favorite memory with my teammates was going to the state championship with them my junior year. We did not win, but it was my last hurrah with all my seniors. It was one more special moment to be with the girls I have played with and looked up to since I started playing.

What is an accomplishment you've made in one of your sports that you're proud of?
One accomplishment in my softball that I am proud of is enduring through all the hard times. Everyone always talks about how good sports are, but never how hard it can be on a person. There’s a million I wanna quit, or I can’t do this today. What truly matters is how you change those statements and push through because good will follow.

How do you balance HS with college classes and your activities?
I balance everything by being extremely organized, sometimes maybe a little too organized. I have a color coded planner, things for school are in orange, softball is in yellow, and there's so many more colors. I always know when I have things going on and arrange time to study and do homework around everything else going on. It definitely took practice to be able to manage my time and actually follow through with these plans.

What community service projects do you enjoy doing? Which is your favorite and why?
I enjoy many different community service projects, but my all time favorite is Christmas for Kids. Christmas is not Christmas without this event. It’s like I get to be Santa for a day. In my organization, Kappa Alpha Zeta we purchase dinner and presents, wrap the presents, and deliver to their house. I love seeing all the kids' faces as they see their Christmas trees become surrounded by all sorts of gifts.

What leadership opportunities have you had as a result of these projects?
As a result of Christmas for Kids and many other community service events through Kappa Alpha Zeta, I have had the opportunity to be both Vice President of Rush, as well as the Vice President of Administration. As the Vice President of Rush, I planned all the events for new girls trying to get in. I wanted their rush to be just as special as mine. As the Vice President of Administration I get to plan all our community service events by making our sign up app, as well as our online calendar.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is my ability to communicate well. This always ensures things get done as I come up with a plan. I don't lead by ordering people around, I lead by encouraging others to do things. Whether this is showing them the ways I solve problems, or inspiring them to find their own solution. I believe kindness is the best way to communicate with others, nobody wants to be yelled at.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do and the entire day to do it you would find me tanning in my backyard and reading a book. I absolutely love to read, I jump into stories and forget about the world around me.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
College is up next for me and I am super excited, but also a little scared. I got accepted into my dream college, The University of Georgia, and I’m so excited to attend in the fall. When I got in I dropped everything and drove to my moms work to celebrate. I ran in and gave her a huge hug, followed by some celebratory squeals and Starbucks.

My part-time jobs are at Dick’s Sporting Goods and the local little league baseball/ softball park. I have been employed there since May of 2022 and have worked my way to the top. I love this job because I have built so many relationships and met so many of my closest friends. This job also allows me to participate in community events as well as gives me an opportunity to learn more about management.

How has your job helped shape your leadership skills?
My jobs have helped me shape leadership skills because I have had to learn how to deal with difficult situations on my own as well as working alongside my peers to problem solve. I have also experienced great deals of customer service and supply management at the ballpark.

Tell us about your school and what you love most about it.
I come from a super small town in Minnesota. When I'm talking to people and I tell them where I'm from, the most common answer I get is, "Where's that?" For my school, we are most recognized for our music program. We have top-tier music programs like our Concert Choir, and all of our high school bands.

How long have you been swimming, what lengths do you swim, and which is your favorite? Why?
I have been swimming for a total of 8 years. 3 of which were our swim club, I've been swimming on our swim and dive team for 5 years; 4 years varsity. This past swim season, I swam in all 3 relays while also swimming an occasional 100 yard or a 50 yard freestyle. My favorite relay to swim is the 200 freestyle relay and my favorite individual is a 50 yard freestyle. In both events, I swim only 50 yards so it helps a lot with my anxiety because it's a shorter distance.

What is your favorite accomplishment with swimming?
My favorite accomplishment was placing in all 3 relays this year during the swim conference. I love the girls I swam my relays with, and I will forever be proud of them.

How did you get involved in lifeguarding for the Special Olympics and why is it important to you?
My school's youth/adult coordinator reached out to me, asking if I could lifeguard. She sent me a picture with a bunch of dates on it, so I said I could do most. I wasn't sure what the guarding was for. I saw the opportunity to lifeguard and I took it. Lifeguarding for the Special Olympics is important to me because I love all of those kids I worked with, and I wish more people would get to know them instead of judging right away; they're all sweethearts.

How did you find your photographer, JD Creations Photography & Design? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through a friend reference. I loved how cool she was and how we would chat about new updates in our lives and catch up on the old news.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
For me, it's hard to choose between College Prep Writing and ASL II. In College Prep Writing, the most interesting thing I've learned is how to do an annotated bibliography. In ASL II, the most interesting thing would have to be all of the sport signs we learned, although I continue to learn new things every day.

What has your favorite service project been in the NHS?
My by-far favorite service project for the NHS would be bell ringing for the Salvation Army. It was a bit chilly outside that day, but I had a lot of fun. I also got to show my personality by singing and dancing, while also having tons of fun with the girls I went bell ringing with!

What type of music is your favorite to play? Do you have a go-to song and if so, what is it?
My favorite type of music to play is jazz music. I have a couple of go-to songs for jazz. I play a song called “Indigo Hippo,” and I play another song titled “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” which are my two favorites to play. Another song I love to play that doubles as a pep band and a jazz song is “Gonna Fly Now," (the Rocky theme song).

What do you wish others knew about being in the marching band?
Marching band is one of the most fun bands you will ever be involved in. You can meet so many new people and make friends within your section! You also do a bunch of fun cadences while marching down the street. I would definitely recommend joining a marching band!

What has your favorite marching band trip been?
My all-time favorite marching band trip would have to be traveling down to Nashville, Tennessee. It was my favorite place because that's the city of country music.

Picture
Photography by My dad

How did you get involved in archery and where are you at with it now?
I took a beginners class in 1st grade. I joined the team the very next year because I just loved the sport so much. As of now, I've been in archery for 10 years and I still love the sport.

What is a favorite memory with your softball team?
My favorite memory with my softball team is having a mud practice after it rained all day the previous day. I feel like it was a very good team bonding practice. After that practice was done, I was head to toe covered in mud!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I volunteer a lot, for example, helping our junior wolves team at our home invite for archery and teaching kids more about competitive swimming and my passion for the sport.

What else would you like to talk about?
My love and passion for band; especially my love for the baritone saxophone. I have had the honors of playing in the Central Minnesota Band Directors Association (CMBDA) honor bands, starting in my 5th grade year. I have also had the honor of playing in honor jazz as well. This year for band, I will be traveling down to Minneapolis for the MMEA Midwinter Convention in February, 2024.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could definitely talk about how amazing of people I have in my life as of now. I have so many people supporting me and all of my activities and honors I've been involved in/was involved in.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started cheerleading when I was 5 years old, and have been consistently cheering for the past 13 years. I started just cheering with my older sister's team, until there was a separate team for my age group. Currently, I am a varsity cheerleader at my high school, and plan to continue my cheerleading career in college!

What is your cheer team like and what is a favorite memory with them?
The best way to describe my cheer team is like a family. Over the last 6 years cheering together we have all gotten to be exactly like sisters. My favorite memory with my team is going to camp over the last couple summers. At camp we get the opportunity to grow closer as a team. It is one of my favorite times of the year.

What do you wish others knew about cheer?
Something I wish others knew about cheer is that it is not just an activity where we shake our pom poms. It is a sport that is very challenging physically and mentally. It takes a lot of hard work over the years to get to the point we are at right now.

What are your roles and responsibilities as class president?
As my class’ president, it is my job to help coordinate events such as dances, activities, and fundraisers throughout the year.

How has serving on national boards shaped you as a leader?
Serving on these national boards has allowed me to grow in tremendous ways. Getting to lead such a large group of people has pushed me out of my comfort zone like no other. I am so glad that I have had an important impact on these boards.

Why did you choose to pursue Elementary Education & what do you hope to do with your degree?
Ever since I was young I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. I love getting to work with kids everyday at my internship, and I am excited to see where my career goes in the future. With my degree I hope to get to come back to my hometown and teach students in my county!

What do you love doing most with the children in the second grade classroom?
My favorite thing I do with the children in my classroom is when we have reading groups, and they get to come sit with me and read me stories. I love getting to see their enthusiasm as they succeed at their reading for the day.

What is your favorite thing to teach about agriculture?
My favorite thing to teach about agriculture is how big of an impact it has on our society. Agriculture is such a huge part of our world, and I fear people don’t recognize that. I feel like it is part of my job as an agriculture enthusiast to inform people about ag.

What is a proud moment within your activities with 4H.
One of my proudest moments in 4H occurred last summer when my sewing project was selected for presentation at the Illinois State Fair. This was a very big accomplishment for me since it was my first time presenting at the state fair and it was only my second year in sewing. I felt a great sense of accomplishment in sewing my own garment.. Also, it was a great experience going to Springfield and seeing other amazing projects in the various categories.

What do you love most about working with kids?
What I love most about working with kids is to be able to form relationships with them and watch them grow. Each child is unique and has their own personality. It is so special to see them progress throughout the year, in their learning or just as a person. It is also very important for me to show them that I care, whether it be helping them with their work or just having a conversation with them.

What activities do you enjoy doing with them?
Through this class, we also have times where we run a pop up daycare/camp, where we spend time watching kids, and creating activities for them to do throughout the day. I enjoy playing games with them whenever they ask us to, and I also enjoy just hanging out with them in general. We also have a time where we create crafts for them to do. It is fun to be able to do that with them and to see all of the different ideas they have.

What is the most challenging part about working as a teacher's aid, and what is the most rewarding?
Since being a teacher’s aid, I've grasped a better understanding of exactly how much work teachers have to do throughout the day. Besides teaching, they have a lot of duties, including making copies or creating activities for students. It can be challenging to maintain everything, so I'm glad that I'm able to help my teacher with a lot of these tasks. That being said, it is so rewarding to be able to learn so much while being a teacher’s aid. I know that it will help me be more prepared and knowledgeable when I start teaching on my own.

What do you hope to do with your degree in early childhood education?
With my degree in early childhood education, I hope to teach either second or third grade. After working with kids in different age ranges, I feel that those two grades are the ones that I’m most drawn to. I’m also looking forward to gaining more experience in the education field and becoming more advanced in my career in the future.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
I come from a very loving and supportive family, and I’m beyond grateful to have them in my life. I don’t have siblings, but I am very close to my cousins, they are like siblings to me. On my mom’s side, I’m the oldest cousin, and I feel that it’s important for me to set a good example for them. I want to be there for them whenever I can and want them to know that I will always be by their side. I was truly blessed with these wonderful little cousins, and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
One of my favorite family memories is a couple years ago. My family and I took a small vacation in Oklahoma. It was during Christmas break, and there were 12 of us sharing one big cabin. I spent the time with my parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. It was so fun spending time with each other in the cold weather, around campfires, and making memories.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
My favorite family tradition that I hope continues for many years is during Christmas time. Every year during the beginning of Christmas break, my family comes to my house and we decorate Christmas cookies together. We create fun cookie designs and there are different winners for different categories. We listen to Christmas music, take pictures and play games together.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?

Other than Ready Set Teach, my favorite class this year is English. English has always been one of my strengths when it comes to school, and one of my favorite subjects. I have always enjoyed writing, so the subject usually comes naturally to me. The past two years, I have been taking dual credit English, earning college credit for it. I’m glad that I have the opportunity to be able to get ahead in college, by already completing most of my English credit. Surprisingly, taking dual credit English hasn’t been too hard, and I really think it’s worth it.

What will you miss most about high school?
What I'll miss most about high school is seeing most of my friends everyday. Once college starts, a lot of people are going their separate ways, and we won’t be able to see each other as often as we do now. That is why I want to make the most of this last year and create these memories with my friends.

Where are we most likely to find you and your friends during down time and what are you doing?
Most likely, my friends and I will be spending our time shopping together. We love taking turns driving and going to our favorite places. We also love going to Starbucks together. We go there often, either to get work done, or to just get a coffee and hang out, which we do most of the time.

If you could travel anywhere right now today - where would you go, who would you take with you, and what would be the first thing you did there?
If I could travel anywhere in the world right now, it would be anywhere in Europe. There are so many countries in Europe that I want to visit, so it’s so hard to choose just one. All of Europe has always been beautiful to me and it is my dream to travel through the country in the future. Some of the top countries that I would love to experience are England, Greece, Italy, and France. I would want to go with my parents, and I think that the first place I want to explore is London.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Something that I think is inspiring from my life is when I was born a micro preemie at 23 weeks. I only had a 5-10 percent chance of survival. I had so many family and friends praying over me, and I really believe that contributed to my healing. I know that I am so lucky to be here today, and because of this, I believe that it pushes me to try harder and work harder to become successful in my future.

What else would you like to talk about?

As I have approached my senior year, it has been my goal to become more open in trying new things and really make the most out of my last year of high school. With that being said, I have made an effort in going to more events, becoming more involved, and making the most out of the little time I have left of my senior year. Applying to this magazine, is an example of that. It is something a little more out of my comfort zone, but I am so excited to see where it takes me!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
What I really feel passionate about is the wonderful opportunity I have in the program, Ready Set Teach. Where I am able to strengthen my learning in the education field and get a feel of what it would actually be like when I start my career as a teacher. I'm so grateful for everything that this program has taught me. I not only have learned so much from my teachers that I am interning with, but also from the amazing students that I have been blessed to meet and watch grow throughout the year.

How did you find your photographer, Contemporary Portraits? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I'm fortunate that my mom is a senior photographer, and gets to take my photos as the year goes on. Even though it is my mom who is taking the photos, I'm not the kind of person who usually loves getting pictures taken. But as I continued to do these sessions with her, I have become more comfortable in front of the camera and excited to see the outcomes of these shoots. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to be able to choose locations and outfits for my shoots, and share these memories with my mom my senior year.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day, I would most likely be spending my time at home. I would be hanging out with my family, or just resting. When I have nothing to do, I like to scroll on social media or watch shows.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Although I am nervous about it, I'm excited to graduate high school and start college. I know so much will change, but I’m excited to start this new chapter of my life. There are so many goals I want to accomplish when it comes to my career and future, and I’m looking forward to taking that step to achieving those goals. In addition, when I start college, I am going to start substitute teaching for elementary schools. I’m greatly looking forward to that and I know it will help me get closer to my teaching career.

Michelle Rodriguez for Capricho Photography
Issue 74 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Olivia Owen and I met when taking senior photos earlier this year. She’s a leader on her high school dance team and she radiates positivity and kindness. As I’ve gotten to know her through planning her senior sessions I’ve seen a confident and smart young woman who is looking forward to all her future holds. I recently found out she’s an accomplished crocheter! But beyond that she’s an accomplished dancer and a wonderful daughter, sister and friend. I’m thankful our paths crossed and I’ve had the opportunity to create beautiful photos of a beautiful young lady both inside and out.

What is your favorite part of being a senior?
I like the freedom that I have in my schedule now. Since I’ve done all of my college applications, and met majority the credit requirements to graduate, there’s a lot less pressure on me at school. I have more fun now.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I hope that I’ve demonstrated how important it is to move with integrity no matter the circumstances.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class this year is probably Discreet math. I’ve learned a lot about the more functional ways to use math in my life outside of basic addition and subtraction.

What will you miss most about high school?
I will most likely miss the familiarity of high school. I’ve been going to school with the same people for years now, so it will definitely be weird to not see them everyday.

What are you looking forward to most about life after high school?
Definitely going to college. I love my family and friends, but I feel that I tend to make better decisions and think more carefully when I’m forced to be independent.

Tell us about your dance career.

I’ve been dancing for 15 years; I started when I was 2 and a half years old after watching June in Little Einsteins. Majority of my dance experience took place in a studio environment where I competed, and in high school I started dancing on my high schools dance team sophomore year. I still compete, but the environment is a little different.

What is your dance team like and what do you love most about being on that team?
My dance team is full of energetic, creative, and supportive girls whom I love so much. I love our constant support for each other and our accomplishments.

What is a favorite accomplishment with dance?
On that note, my biggest dance accomplishment is probably getting accepted into the Alvin Ailey summer intensive.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I have 2 older brothers, an older sister, and a younger sister. It terms of how I fit in, I’m in the middle, so I’m right in between them. I stand out because my older siblings are at least 15 years older than me, so I often feel like the oldest even though I’m not.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
We have chili for dinner on Halloween; my mom makes really good chili.

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

As an officer in my dance team, it’s important to me to show up and give 100% to encourage my teammates to do the same. That includes time outside of the dance gym which could be taking extra classes or working out in the gym or going over corrections in my own time. I really am dedicated to leading by example, and hopefully, make a difference on and off the dance floor.

What else would you most like to talk about?
I just love art in general. I like to crochet; I taught myself how to in 2022. I also like doing my own nail art, and I made a pop up book for my brother.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk about dance all the time. I have been a studio dancer since I was two years old, and I’ve loved learning and growing in my craft. Dance is so much more than competing and tricks. It’s an art form that conveys meaning and emotion. So, I enjoy talking about choreography, dance evolution, and just being in dance spaces.

How did you find your photographer, Michelle Rodriguez for Capricho Photography? What was your experience like  & what did you love most about it?
Michelle Rodriguez is the mother of a former colonel on my dance team, so a lot of my teammates have used her for their senior pictures. I absolutely love how she captures the personality of her subjects. She’s so much fun and put you at ease, so the experience is memorable and enjoyable.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Probably in my bed.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am excited to start contest season at dance in January.
