The Nomination: Gabriell Mann sets positive examples for others and always strives to do her best with a positive attitude! She is enrolled in her second year of college classes. She served as class president 9th-11th grades, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Leo Club, Key club, and served as her class homecoming representative her 9th and 11th grade years. She has competed in Track & Field since she was in the 4th grade and is very passionate about running. She works hard and excels at everything she does!

How did you develop a passion for running?
My passion for Track & Field actually began in the 4th grade! During P.E., boys and girls who wanted to claim the title of the fastest kid in 4th grade were given the chance to race each other. I jumped at the chance to race every day and not only consistently beat all of the girls, but the boys as well. My natural ability did not go unnoticed and my mom received a letter inviting me to attend a school state Track & Field meet. Again, jumping at the chance to race, I competed in two different events and placed second in each of the events. Continuing to pursue my passion of running, during my 5th grade year I was the only elementary student to participate on the Junior Varsity Track & Field and Cross Country teams. I won races against 8th graders and set school records. Since then, I've continued to grow in my running ability and am now in 12th grade, a member of my high school track team, USATF, and the Jacksonville Florida summer club team.

Tell us about your Track and Field experiences now through covid.

Although Track & Field through covid has presented challenges, I've developed another level of commitment to running by working out and practicing on my own. When our school track season was cut short last school year, I was more determined than ever to continue to pursue excellence.

What was it like to travel to Nationals in California and Kansas? What did you run and what were the results?
Traveling to Nationals in Kansas and California was the experience of a lifetime and the reward of all my years of hard work. At Nationals, I competed in the triple and long jump events placing in the top 20 in the US in each of these events.

What are your favorite memories from Nationals?
Sharing the experience of running at Nationals with my biggest fans, my mom and grandmother, is a memory I'll cherish for life.

Where do you plan to attend college and what degree do you plan to pursue?
After graduation, I plan to attend Kennesaw State University to pursue a degree in biology then ultimately attend medical school. While at KSU, I will also continue my passion as a member of the KSU Track & Field team. I've always dreamed of attending a big college with an amazing Track & Field team and KSU was the perfect fit. I am extremely excited and honored to be a part of this team!

Lexie Diskin – Kansas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by Caridad Flowers Photography
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: When I look at Lexie, I see a beautiful and strong young lady with a vibrant personality. She has not always had it easy. Lexie was born with a cleft lip, cleft palate, and missing her left ear. The whole left side of her face was underdeveloped. She has Goldenhar syndrome, a rare congenital condition which has required her to have multiple surgeries over the years. Lexie has never allowed her condition to hinder her in any way. She is a tough competitor who plays on her high school and competitive softball teams. She is a member of the Teen Advisory Board at Children’s Mercy Hospital where she has had her numerous surgeries. Lexie is a member of the National Honor Society and Yearbook Editor are just a few of her activities. She is a caring individual and volunteers at Shadow Buddies Foundation which is an organization that provides support for special needs children. Lexie would like to pursue a career in pediatric nursing because of the nurses that have been there for her through all her surgeries. I am extremely proud to nominate Lexie. I can't think of anyone who would be more deserving. She is truly an inspiration.
Picture

Tell us about your Goldenhar syndrome.
My journey with Goldenhar syndrome has been my whole life, and I will continue to live with it my whole life. I have had about 30 surgeries, and each is different and usually builds off of one another. Some are easier than others to recover from but no matter what from the help of my family, friends, and doctors I am always able to push through.

Picture

What do you do as Yearbook editor and what legacy do you hope to leave behind?
As a yearbook editor I oversee all of the operations, choose the fonts, colors, design of the book, and I look over all of the pages and edit them before they are sent off. I want to leave and make a book that people can look back on and be proud of their school and everyone that went there.

Share with us your softball journey.
Softball and baseball has been a part of my life since the day I was born, my entire family plays, has played, or coaches. I started playing softball when I was in second grade. Usually kids start in tee ball, but I didn’t even know I was going to be able to play any sports until my doctor finally cleared me to play (with a face mask on at all times). I am so passionate about the sport because I understand that I might not have been able to play it, and meet all my amazing teammates and coaches, and learn so many valuable lessons. My biggest accomplishment is playing on a very competitive team and play some of the best competition in the nation, and even after all of my surgeries I always come back.
Picture

How has volunteering at Shadow Buddies helped you in your quest to pursue a career in pediatric nursing?
I actually got a shadow buddy when I was little, and it made me feel like I wasn’t alone on my journey and that there are other people just like me. I have seen so many kids who go through so much for their age. This has made me want to become a pediatric nurse because I want to be someone that they can connect with and they can talk to, and I want to be there to make them feel more comfortable during their hardest days.

I started gymnastics in 2014 as a Xcel silver at the age of 10. After competing my Xcel gold season, I decided to compete in a more advanced level. I moved over to the JO (Junior Olympic) where I tested out of levels 4 & 5 and began my JO career as a level 6. I currently am a level 9 gymnast. My favorite event is the floor exercise where I do a 2 1/2 twist. I love this event because I get to tumble. I also like vault where I currently compete a Tsukahara layout.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment with gymnastics?
A favorite memory I have had was getting a 37.000 All Around at our regional meet and placing 4th AA. I have received over 150 medals in the 6 years I have been competing as well as have been MVP for our gym 3 of those years. Our last year was cut short due to the Pandemic.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Gymnastics has been the hardest thing I have accomplished as it takes a lot of time and motivation to achieve the skills needed at the level I am at. I train in the gym an average of 20hrs a week while also going to school, working my design business, and also working at Michaels Crafts part time. I have learned time management, organization, and leadership skills with the schedule that I have.

Share with us about your graphic design business.
I started Natalia Mae Designs by putting one of my designs on redbubble.com. After getting enough sales I was able to buy the supplies to start my own Etsy shop where I have successfully grown my company while maintaining a 5 star rating.
All of my designs are different based on client needs or requests. But I typically focus on themes that are popular within my age group.

What has been most surprising to you about running your own business?
Finding out that running a business has its’ challenges, especially when it comes to marketing and creating pricing that is profitable. You must be aware of what is trending currently and how to promote your products to your target audience.

Nomination and Photography by Brindley Photo
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kennedy Beckley is an amazing role model. She will graduate with honors, is enrolled in college courses and very active in school. Her accolades include class Vice President, member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Leo Club, Leadership Council, Future Teachers of America, four-year varsity cheerleader and team captain. She is also a traveling competitive cheerleader as a member of the North East Ohio All Stars. She volunteers as a handler of the school facility dog and the school pep club. She plans to continue her education and hopes to be a member of a university cheer squad.
Picture
Photography by Brindley Photo

What would you like to be interviewed about?
A topic I could be interviewed about would include my help with the facility dog at my school. Our facility dog is not a service dog because she helps with stress, depression and anxiety with students and staff at our schools.

Please tell us more about your facility dog.
Audrey is a golden retriever born in Australia. This is my second year helping with her and our very first dog Mustang. Audrey’s handlers are all students picked and nominated by our teachers to ensure Audrey gets the best care that she deserves. Audrey as I have already mentioned is not a service dog, she is a part of our staff and helps students and faculty with stress, anxiety, depression and when you need a little love. Our facility dogs were both trained out of state and now students like me learn the commands that were taught to help the students at my school with our facility dog, Audrey.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am also involved in C.A.S.T. (Caring And Serving Together) with my high school. This is a community service-based club. We have made blankets and collected necessities for the homeless along with many other community service activities within our school district.

How did you get involved with C.A.S.T? Why is this organization important to your heart?
C.A.S.T. was a new program that started my sophomore year. This club was brought by our new principal from her previous school. I heard about it after I was nominated by the teachers to be one of the first students in the group. Which was so cool to be a part of one of our first true volunteer programs. Now the teachers hand pick a group of kids every year which is truly an honor at my school. C.A.S.T. has a few other locations other than my school which has helped us meet new people and see what great accomplishments they are making in their schools and community.

Picture
Photography by Brindley Photo

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would love to talk about my passion for cheerleading. During this topic I would talk about the leadership, mental toughness, and physical strength it takes to be a cheerleader.

Share with us your cheerleading journey, including how all you mentioned above comes into play as you have gotten older.
I haven’t cheered my entire life. I started out dancing for a small dance studio from ages 3-13. While there I started cheering at my first cheer gym from ages 10-15. I have also cheered for my school since 7th grade, made Varsity my freshmen year and have been a co-captain of my team for the past 2 years. While also being a high school cheerleader I attend NEO Allstars for my 2nd season as a competitive cheerleader here. Growing up I always had the love for cheer and dance. It’s all I ever still want to do even when my days get hard, I know I have a team that counts on me and needs me to be my best. When other people don’t feel as if they are the best they can be as a leader and captain on the team I will step up and be your friend. I will be your biggest supporter, craziest fan, the person that pushes you to the limits and makes sure you give it all you got. I do this because everything about cheerleading is worth it, if you put the work in and nothing makes me more proud then knowing my teams and the teams I help are proud of themselves and that I have encouraged them in any way to make them proud.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
Getting 4th at STATE in 2019.

Picture
Photography by Brindley Photo
You have a lot of leadership opportunities under your belt. Which one is most important to you and why?
I have already mentioned about cheer but my most important and favorite leadership position is being a captain on my team. It’s not an easy job unless you make it easy. Leadership is exactly what a team needs. It never needs to be the whole team but a person who can make the whole team feel as if they were one. I have been a part of my high school varsity cheer team for 4 years now, with ups and downs but I couldn’t see it any other way. Having this leadership position has now led me to wanting to further my time in sports and after high school with a major or minor in sports management then later on continue my time with cheerleading by opening or coaching at a cheer gym.

I was nominated as Prom princess my Junior year in 2020. While also being crowned Homecoming queen my senior year in 2020.

Delaini Hanna - Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Becky Hanna
Photography by Imagery By Carissa
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Delaini Hanna is a senior student and athlete who, despite obstacles, keeps a positive perspective! She aspires to earn a scholarship pole vaulting; a literal high bar, but after missing last spring and a surgically reconstructed ACL from tearing it in a volleyball playoff game, this goal is high up there! With a smile and positive attitude, she amazes me every day as she battles through rehab to be back for track, “if it’s God’s will, it will happen!” She is an inspiration to her peers, teammates, and even competitors because of her positivity and tenacity through adversity!
Picture
Photography by Imagery By Carissa

How are you overcoming your struggle with your ACL surgery as a senior?
Physically, I go to therapy three days a week. I’m blessed to have terrific care from my surgeon to my therapy; everyone is committed to the goal of getting me pole vaulting by district track. It’s been a lot more challenging mentally; I attempt to stay positive and believe God has a reason for all things. I know I am going to enjoy and appreciate the rewards more after working harder than I ever have to reach them!

How has covid affected your recovery?
Surgery was delayed pending a negative Covid test. I have to wear a mask at therapy which makes it very hard to breath. In our county masks are required when unable to socially distance. Because my dad is my coach, training for pole vaulting isn’t as challenging with Covid restrictions since we’re members of the same household. The greatest challenge with Covid was the inability to compete last season; although, I recognize that was the case for my competition too!
Picture
Photography by Becky Hanna

Tell us more about your pole-vaulting career.
I was 4 when I first put a short pole in the box and let my dad sling me into the pit, so you could say it was love at a low height.  As a freshman I made it to regionals and got third-one place away from making it to state. My sophomore year I beat my personal best jump of 10 foot and qualified for the state competition.
Due to covid I was unable to complete my junior year. Competing at the state track meet is my greatest accomplishment; it’s definitely a family affair-my two uncles and my sister have all competed/vaulted at the state level! I was humbled to be blessed to uphold the legacy.
Picture
Photography by Becky Hanna

What is the hardest thing about pole vaulting that people may not realize?

Vaulters have to work every day over the course of many years in order to reach new heights. Besides being a long-term commitment, people don’t realize what vaulting requires; resources like poles and equipment to train are very costly. It is also critical to have a knowledgeable coach. Additionally, the vaulter has to be fearless. I’ve heard my whole life, “you have to be a little crazy to vault,” and I admit it’s not natural to put your body several feet in the air on a tiny tall stick upside down, so I accept being crazy because I enjoy vaulting.
Picture
Delaini Hanna - This is a painting I did for a family friend that works in the oil field. It is currently hanging up in the main Wilson Operating office in Archer City, Tx.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love painting; my favorite creation is an oil field related silhouette with a glowing sunset in the background.

Kyndal Jolley – Alabama
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by Heather Drummond Photography
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kyndal is known for her willingness to serve others. She serves others through peer helpers, a program that helps students with disabilities, and church programs such as teaching Vacation Bible School, being a camp counselor, and serving food to the homeless. Kyndal has been part of her school volleyball team for six years. As a Senior, she worked hard to inspire her team to play as a team versus working toward individual goals. Kyndal has done all these things while achieving academic success. She plans to further her education by pursuing a degree as a speech pathologist.
Picture
Photography by Heather Drummond Photography

Tell us more about your volunteer services.
My volunteer services included my role at my church’s kids camp. I volunteered as a youth leader to help with anything that needed to be done including taking care of the kids, serving lunch, helping the kids complete different crafts, and assisting in anything else that needed to be done. My volunteer work in one of my school clubs, FCCLA, included serving food to people that come to The Foundry, which is a food bank. I also help organize, package, and deliver the food to the people who come to The Foundry.

When did you start volunteering and what do you love most about it?
I would like to think volunteering has always been a part of my life. I have always helped at my church whenever I was needed. In the 9th grade, however, I started school clubs such as FCCLA and Peer Helper. These school clubs helped gave me many opportunities for volunteering.

Picture
Photography by Heather Drummond Photography

Please share a favorite memory from volunteering with us.

In all the years i’ve volunteered, my favorite memories are made while volunteering for Peer Helper. This school club has done many activities such as track, basketball, bowling, and a special needs Prom. In all of these I have made so many of the same, precious memories. These memories include spending time with the kids or teens and being able to bring joy to them by helping them do things they might not be able to do on their own.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers, I would express how important it is to help others and to always think about others. Through my experience in being a peer helper, I learned how kids with disabilities need one on one guidance. In my experience with this, I helped them learn how to bowl, play basketball, and participate in a track meet. I also attended, as a volunteer, to Tim Tebows Night To Shine, which is a prom experience for people with special needs ages 14 and older.

Photography by Heather Drummond Photography

How did you maintain such a high gpa while dealing with covid restrictions?
During the first semester of my Senior year, I was a remote student. This helped a lot with being able to get my schoolwork done because I had more time to spend on my class work. I have had a good GPA every year of high school but to make sure I kept it up during covid, I worked harder to make sure I got my work done and to make good grades. I used Covid restrictions to my advantage and pushed myself harder than I would have during a normal high school year. I was determined to not let my grades or Senior year be ruined by Covid-19.

What was your district like during covid? How much restrictions have you had on school activities like volleyball?
Our district implemented several Covid restrictions for volleyball like wearing masks, sitting 6 feet apart, and cleaning volleyballs during the game. I represented our volleyball team in a school video with other fall sports leaders to inform students, parents, and fans of school Covid restrictions. Our team finished our season with a winning record. Unfortunately, we were unable to go the second round of playoffs due to a Covid outbreak on our team.

You have a lot on your plate - what keeps you so driven to try so many different activities while holding a super high GPA & holding down a job?
What keeps me so driven and motivated is my parents. I’ve been lucky enough to grow up in a household that’s extremely hardworking and supportive. Knowing how badly they want me to succeed makes me work twice as hard. I’m confident that continuing to multitask and deal with stressful situations, I will be better prepared for the real world. Hopefully, I can meet their standards and continue to make them proud of me! My entire family has accomplished so much in life, I hope to join them very soon.

What roles and responsibilities did you have with the student council and what was a favorite activity within your leadership role & why?
In student council I was an active member. As a class I got to vote for school executive decisions, have a say, and overall help my school! My favorite activity was participating in the yearly blood drive. I had the opportunity to stand alongside students donating and making sure they were okay. I love taking care of people, being able to do that hands on was an amazing experience. I look forward to it every year! This yeah with the COVID-19 virus ongoing I’m not sure if I will be able to have the opportunity to participate. It breaks my heart but hopefully I’ll be able to help out!

With your activities, you have a lot of teams to contribute to. What would you say are your characteristics of a team player? What do you bring to the table?
As a member of both the cheerleading and lacrosse team I do have a lot of responsibility on my hands. For example, this year for cheerleading I was in charge of leading stretches and organizing cheerleaders and basketball players for Canfield vs Poland night. Poland is our rival team and this year we will be hosting our senior night during the halftime of that game. Pairing up jv and varsity cheerleaders alongside all the basketball players was a harder task! However, they knew I could do it! For lacrosse I’ve been told I’m one of the loudest and proudest on the team. I’m in charge of leading stretches before games and at practice! I get along with all my teammates and always have words of encouragement! I like to support my team to the best of my ability! I love all my teammates and fellow cheerleaders I am very proud of all of our accomplishments we’ve made together!

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

What is select female ensemble and how do you use it as an outlet for your personality?
Personally I use music as an outlet for my feelings. As a child suffering with anxiety, I struggled to talk about how I truly felt. Alongside writing I would sing songs that would relate to me. It made me feel together again. Singing in a female ensemble has only strengthened me and encouraged me to be myself. There’s a meaning behind every lyric, some people don’t always catch it. Every song has a meaning and it’s beautiful. I’m very blessed to have found singing and have had an amazing grandmother to be my number one fan. Sometimes people can’t understand what you feel, so why not sing it instead.

What do you love most about modeling at Jennifer Grace Studios?
I love having someone as caring, fun and talented as Jenny to keep me on an amazing team. Modeling with Jenny has boosted my confidence tremendously! Without her I’m not sure where I would be today! Jenny has opened so many doors of opportunity to me and for that I am grateful. The overall experience of meeting new people and creating friends along the way is amazing! I’ve built so many strong friendships and have even got to travel a little bit along the way! Jenny is not just any photographer. She is like a second mom to me. I’ve struggled a lot with image and personal issues that she has been able to help me with. She’s always just a text or phone call away. Modeling with Jenny’s team is not just fun, it’s family!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished occurred in 2019. There was a time where my sisters lungs collapsed, and she was almost taken away from me. During that time, I grew the strength and responsibilities of an adult. My parents were stuck with her for weeks in the hospital. I was left with school and my younger brother. Getting through all of that during the thanksgiving holiday was extremely rough. But at the end of the day, I kept my head high and overcame the worst. Luckily, everyone is in good health as of now!

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I waited a long time to be myself. I regret that decision deeply now! It took me ten years of trying to fit in to school to realize it was not working. If you just stay true to who you are you would not believe the doors that will open for you! Stay confident, keep a smile on your face, and don’t change for anyone but yourself!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I hope to be working on my masters in college after already receiving my bachelors from YSU! I would love to have a job where I can travel the world! There are so many places to see and things to do! Hopefully, I will find an amazing job within the travel industry. Who knows I might just be the next big travel writer or travel photographer! I do plan on moving around a lot! Wherever the road takes me is where I belong.

3 Things on your bucket list
Get married in my 20’s & have a baby boy!
Spend one New Year’s Eve in Paris
Go on vacation to Africa with my sister!

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mother incredibly inspiring! Throughout the years I’ve noticed that I’m becoming her! That sounds a little crazy I know, but we all have a little bit of someone in us! Her personality and confidence had help shaped and molded me into who I am today! I love her with all my heart and am so happy to have her in my life!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I’ve been told by a few that my confidence and compassionate personality is amazing. Many have said that just having me talk to them and listen has helped them tremendously. I will always take care of people whether they take care of me! I know what it’s like to go through rough patches in life, so being able to help others in points of hopelessness means the world to me.

Ayden King – Ohio
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography
by MacSnaps Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ayden King will be graduating this coming May and has over 32 hours in College Credit Plus from both Ohio University and the University of Akron. He spends much of his free time tutoring students of all ages. He is on the TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Math & Science) Competition Team, and in the Interact (Rotary sponsored) Club. He loves to Snowboard, work with coding and computer programing, and is currently a 4th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. He has received various awards and honors during his high school career. He has a very bright future ahead of him.

Tell us about Taekwondo:
I began Taekwondo around a month before I turned four years old was a way to help with my ADHD. I ended up enjoying it a lot and have stuck with it for almost 14 years now. I used to compete and even took third at nationals in Los Angeles before moving out of the competitive circuit. I've always just enjoyed what Taekwondo has brought to my life and constantly try to live by its tenets. This past summer, I tested for and received my fourth-degree black belt. In continuing my own Taekwondo journey, I have also volunteered and assist with teaching classes to help younger students as a mentor.

How did you become a programmer?
I began coding during my eighth-grade year after reading an article about a program called AlphaGo from Google. If anyone recognizes the name, AlphaGo was a program that taught itself to play the Chinese game of Go. This was impressive because of the countless numbers of potential game states in Go and because most strategies relied more on intuition than logic. Thus, in learning to play the game Go, AlphaGo had, in some form, captured the magic of human intuition. And, honestly, I couldn't grapple with not being able to understand how Google's team had done it. Thus, I began learning several different coding languages before eventually settling on Python.
I then spent my ninth grade year learning about and coding in Python. I think that the first program I wrote from scratch was a text-based Roshambo partner who would begin beating players who played the same hand each time. In other words, if a player continued playing rock, it would eventually start playing paper.
At the end of my freshman year, I switched to learning about calculus. It might seem a little cocky, but derivatives and integrals seemed easy in comparison to the math I was preparing for, the math of neural networks. Neural networks require a form of calculus called Matrix Calculus. Matrix Calculus is a specialized notation of multivariate calculus for matrices. To vastly oversimplify, it is made to collect all of the partial derivatives of a function with many different variables simultaneously. Standard multivariate calculus typically only deals with two to three different variables at a time and calculates the partial derivatives in succession. Standard calculus just takes the derivative of a single variable. Hopefully, that explains why regular calculus didn't seem particularly difficult in my mind.
It took me around three weeks to get through Calculus and Multivariate Calculus, but it took me around seven months to figure out Matrix Calculus. Even then, I was never as strong at it. The problem is that I couldn't find any material online explaining it, and even my Calc 1 professor felt that he didn't have enough experience with this specialized notation of calculus when I came to him for help. Thus, I was forced to just look up the code of other people's neural networks and reverse engineer how they'd taken the gradients. It wasn't a particularly pleasant process, but, eventually, I figured it out.
A few weeks after I figured out how to do matrix calculus, I discovered software like TensorFlow and Keras. In other words, I hadn't really needed to do all that work because there was software that would have done it for me. Still, it definitely boosted my mathematical ability by a lot. Even so, I began using Keras daily because it allowed me to experiment with architectures and different layer types on a whim.

What pivotal figures shaped you into who you are today?
Two pivotal figures shaped me into who I am today. Since their stories overlap, I’ll narrate each separately, to avoid entanglement.
The first one is my mother. Mom is permanently disabled from several autoimmune/genetic disorders. Before becoming disabled, she worked in a cath-lab, leading to my knowledge of medical terminology. Humorously, in preschool, my self-portrait drew chuckles from privy teachers. I spared no details: Lungs, Kidneys, Ribs, and more. Evidently, my drawing was unique amongst the sea of my friends' stickmen. Mom underwent surgery after surgery, year after year, for "King"-sized hospital stays, saddling her with a plethora of medical bills. Having worked for the state, she was ineligible for Medicaid. I worried about her immensely, I’d regularly forget to eat lunch at school. Asleep one night, both hips dislocated simultaneously. I'd known she’d been in pain but not how quickly her body was deteriorating. After swiveling her legs to the ground, I helped her to her car, Mom refusing to admit that she needed help. The degeneration was extensive: she needed bilateral hip replacements. That’s one story among many. Despite obstacles, she ran the PTA! As you’ve probably guessed, I’ll always admire Mom's perseverance and indomitable spirit.
Speaking of, the second one is my grandpa. PapPap was my father figure, role-model, and best friend from a young age. A former coal miner, he later shifted to a construction manager/engineer position for another company, despite no formal degree. He always made spending time with me a priority. This required unrivaled patience, given my ADHD tangents; luckily, he had the longest fuse of anyone. He fueled my interest in engineering and aptitude for tinkering. He taught me about circuitry, using mechanical tools, and running construction equipment. Tragically, five days before my twelfth birthday, PapPap was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer. Losing him was always inevitable, but I couldn't fathom fate being so cruel amid Mom's health. I’ll never forget hearing his incoherent whimpers on the ER phone. He fought courageously for two years, but that day was the day he lost the war and I lost my hero. He’ll always have a place in my heart, but I've learned to treasure those memories, not mourn the ones I never made. I'll always remember his aphorisms and one-liners, and I'll always admire his patience and insatiable appetite for knowledge.
Both pillars of my history influenced me in different ways: Mom showed me to get up, no matter how hard the fall. She also sparked my interest in the medical field and a desire to help others. PapPap showed me the value of patience and curiosity. He also stirred my interests in engineering and data science. With the addition of my self-taught coding prowess, Mom and PapPap's influences later merged into my love for biomedical data science.

Sarah Robinson – Mississippi
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sarah Robinson has overcome a lot of obstacles in her life. From being born at 7 1/2 weeks premature, to being the leader of the pack, she is awe inspiring to me. Sarah weighed 3.4 pounds and fought asthma and is now an amazing athlete and roll model for other peers. She was chosen as one of the members of the 2020 Semper Fidelis All American Team to represent the state of Mississippi. Seven years ago, her father had a life-altering accident. She has stepped up to the plate and helped him with running the family business. Sarah is an all around good girl and is very well deserving of this award.
Picture
Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography

What do you think is the biggest influence you had to overcome all your obstacles to become the amazing athlete and role model you are now?
I guess being born a ‘preemie’ was the first big battle for both me and my parents. Coming into this world 7 weeks early at whooping 3 pounds set the stage for me to be a fighter. My father was the first to hold me. That bond has never been broken. I draw strength and encouragement daily from my dad. He instilled in me the drive and determination to work thru the setbacks of asthma, working out and building endurance. He never treated me as a fragile little girl. He taught me to be gritty and that it was ok to be an aggressive competitor. When I watched my dad race dirt bikes, I knew that’s what I wanted to do, and he was more than a willing teacher.

Tell us what sports you play:
Since I was a small child I have participated in organized sports, whether in a league or at school. Soccer, dirt bike racing, gymnastics, dance, track and field and shooting are some of the sports I have enjoyed. My soccer coach, Lyndon Cain has greatly impacted by life and truly inspired me to be ‘more’ than just an athlete. He has taught me responsibility and commitment. He stresses the importance of ‘teamwork’ yet at the same time he ‘pushes’ us each individually, to always give just a little bit more, to set the bar a little higher so ‘WE’ can reach our full potential and stretch our limits, mentally- physically and socially.

What is the 2020 Semper Fidelis All American Team and what are your roles and responsibilities as a member to represent the State of Mississippi?
Through soccer I have learned to not only be a player but also a leader and mentor. There is more to school than just sports. Coach Cain nominated me to represent my school in the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis program last winter. His nomination was based on my participation and leadership in sports, my involvement in our community and maintaining high academic standards. The motto of the Marine Corps is “Always Faithful”. As a student athlete I hope to exemplify dedication to my studies as well as my sports, staying true to myself and my beliefs.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’d be the first to admit I am a tomboy at heart, but I also have a girlie girl side! As a small child I loved gymnastics and dancing. I am a ‘Bravette’, a member of our high school dance team. For the past 4 years I have thoroughly loved the Friday night lights, the football games and then supporting our high school basketball teams. Dancers have a little bit of a competitive nature too. Our squad is small in number but big in heart and it is a sisterhood that I will always cherish.

Sherri Fox Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ethan Carter has been captain of his school’s soccer team for 3 year. He received the all state player award. He is on the National Honors Society and is a student leader. He was able to go on 2 mission
trips to Nogales Mexico with his church to help rebuild retaining walls, lay concrete floors and help in a kid’s cafe. He plans to continue helping people by becoming a physical therapist. His parents think he is a special kid and I think he is pretty special too.

Tell us about your soccer career. When did you start, where & what position do you play?
I have been playing soccer for a total of 6 years. I first started playing soccer in the 7th grade. When I first started playing, I played defense but once I moved up to varsity I began playing midfield and striker.

What is a favorite memory from soccer?
I have made a lot of memories playing soccer in the past couple years, but I think my favorite memory would be when I scored my first goal off a header to tie the game up in the second half.

Tell us about your role in NHS. What are you most proud about being a member?

I am a member of NHS with about 20 other people from my school. We volunteer 20 hours as a group each year in our community. We also do 20 individual service hours a year. Last year for my service hours I helped my uncle coach a girls’ soccer team. I am proud to be an NHS member and help my community out.

That's so cool you got to go to Mexico. Tell us about your mission trips there. What were your conditions like and what did you get to do there?
Every year during the summer I get the chance to go to Nogales, Mexico with my church. Nogales is a very poor and neglected part of Mexico. When you go to Nogales you realize how lucky you are to live in the United States as they don’t have the luxury of having simple things that you’d think most people have. It makes you realize how lucky we are and thankful you are to have things like running water and toilets that flush. I really enjoy going to Mexico and helping the community there. We do things like paint houses, make concrete floors for them, and set up stable houses. I’d encourage anyone who has the chance to go on a missions trip to go and see how God can work in your life.

What did you love about it so much that you wanted to go back?
I loved just helping the community and spending time with the people. I also enjoyed seeing how God used that trip to work in my life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I volunteered for childcare at my church. I volunteered as assistant coach for a girls soccer team.

What do you love about volunteering for childcare at your church?
I just love having an opportunity to give back to the church in anyway I can and I think that helping in childcare is one fun way to do that.

How did you get involved in assistant coaching for a girls' soccer team? What has a favorite memory with them been?
I got involved in coaching the girls’ team because I really enjoy being around the game of soccer and my uncle happened to be coaching a JV team that year. I made some good memories there but my favorite was probably watching the girls apply everything they worked hard on in practice.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
God and sports

Please share more about this topic and why you feel it's so relevant to teens today.
Im very passionate about sports and God. I think that sports are something that are so common in teens’ lives today and it is a chance for teens to have fun doing something they love. Sports are also a good opportunity to be exposed to people you normally wouldn’t be around and to make new friends and connections. Sports can expose you to people and can be a good bridge to a friendship. As a Christian I also try to use sports to be a light to others and draw people to Christ.

What is one of your favorite memories from soccer?
I have several good memories, and I am always in good spirits after winning a game, but if I were to pick one memory it would be winning the 6A state championship in 2019. My high school soccer team was going through playoffs in the spring of my sophomore year. We had reached the state championship. The stakes were high, so we were all really nervous for the game. I will never forget my excitement after winning. My entire team celebrated and we were smiling the entire way home.

What does leadership mean to you, and what do you think makes a good leader?

To me, leadership means using your abilities and status to help others around you become the type of person they want to be. Too many "leaders" use their role in a negative way when leadership should involve helping others grow mentally by working together to achieve common goals. A good leader has flexibility with their outputs and is willing to work well with others. Leaders must also be selfless and put themselves in a position to mentor and help those around them. In my opinion, a leader is often defined by those around them.

What are your roles in Assisteens of Norman and what do you love most about it? What should people know if they want to get involved?
Assisteens is the teenage auxiliary of the Assistance League non-profit organization. I have been a part of the Norman Assisteens since August 2015, and I have been on the board since August 2018. I have served as the fall and spring fundraiser chairs, and I am currently the Operation School Bell chair. The thing I love most about Assisteens is the environment created at every Assisteens event. Everyone is involved and really cares about what is going on and helping ease burdens in our community. To get involved you can search up your local Assisteens chapter online. Hopefully there is a local Assisteens chapter near you and you can sign up for the next school year!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't assume anything is guaranteed. I have worked really hard to get in the position I am today, and one of my biggest regrets is assuming that I was guaranteed something. Nothing in life is absolutely guaranteed and we must not forget that. We need to remember to constantly work hard and give our best efforts if we want to be successful. We can think we are guaranteed to win a certain award or get a certain job and this mentality can cause us to produce less effort. A sense of entitlement is dangerous, so always give your best.

Izabella Valdez - Missouri
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nominated by Nicole Riek
Photography by Infinite Smiles Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Leadership comes natural to Izabella Valdez because when she sees others struggle, she is driven to take action. She wants to help others out any possible way that she can. She also believes that serving as a mentor or guide to others, who may not see their full potential, not only benefits the individual but also the community as a whole. Izabella demonstrates her leadership through kindness that can be seen in her interactions throughout her academics (NHS, A+, Dual Credit, AP & Honors courses), work environment (Sonic), athletics (Varsity Cheerleader, Varsity Softball & Varsity) Basketball) and within her peer group. She truly is a beauty soul both inside and out!

What sports do you play currently and how have they helped you through the pandemic?
The pandemic has altered many aspects of our school year. Thankfully, I was able to finish a season of Varsity Football Cheer and Varsity Softball to maintain a sense of normalcy during these uncertain times. As another season of sports begins, Varsity Basketball is helping me stay motivated and focused on my goals to finish my senior year strong and healthy both physically and mentally. Without sports, as coursework has been optional this year, I believe my drive may have become depleted. Athletics not only has helped me stay engaged in school but is a lifeboat for my mental health.

What motivates you to succeed?
My basketball coach, Mrs. Stambursky, taught me a very important lesson about teamwork. Everytime we went to the baseline she would say, “Look to your right. Look to your left. You will make it in time for her, for your teammates.” Each time we would line up I would turn to my teammates and say “I’m doing this for you.” I didn’t just make it to the line for myself, I made it for them. Your mistakes were everyone’s mistakes. It became bigger than yourself as you propelled your teammates to push boundaries with you. My teammates were the driving factor of my motivation and success.

What is an example of how your actions have affected others?
I was granted the opportunity to tutor a kindergarten class at Ridgeview and have continued to help my assigned class beyond my tutoring. I created numerous connections that I am extremely grateful for. Due to these connections, the para-teacher opened up about her experiences within her position and my supervising teacher invited me into her home to babysit. Beyond my connections with the staff, my most valued interaction was the one I made with my kindergarteners, as I was part of their growth academically and it truly made my experience a cherishable one.

What are your beliefs towards inclusion and love? How can positivity alter your state of mind?
I live by the simple saying of ”If you don't have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.” Every word, every action has a positive or negative cause and effect. Individual’s energy spreads like rapid fire and feeds off each other. It is harder to bring people up once they have been knocked down through negativity. I strive to be the positive reinforcement that attracts others. I choose to focus on altering environments through my positive interactions and intentions. Positivity can be the one small shift needed to stop an endless cycle of toxicity.

What are your struggles and challenges and how did you overcome them/are overcoming them?
I broke my ankle in April of my Freshman year and had to sit out of many opportunities with sports. I experienced depression as I envied others' ability to workout and condition. The constant feeling of not meeting expectations tore me apart. It wasn’t until I stopped throwing a pity party for myself and persevered through the pain, that I saw a dramatic difference. I never missed a day of therapy and pushed through hours of extensive at-home exercises. This determination enabled me to walk before I was intended to and ultimately paved the way towards my comeback in athletics.

What are your aspirations and future goals?
I am extremely curious about the inner workings of the human brain and therefore my aspirations are to be a neuroscientist. To alter someone's life for the better in all aspects is what motivates me to pursue my professional dreams in this area.
A personal goal of mine is to be a positive influencer towards helping others become present in all that life has to offer. Being mindful not only ensures that a single second is not missed but creates appreciation so that nothing is taken for granted as we are only granted one life to live.

Caleb Slavens – Kentucky
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Chad Slavens
Photography by Kaymag Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Caleb Slavens has taken Martial Arts since the age of 6. Received a Blackbelt at the age of 13, while maintaining a perfect GPA, and being the top of his graduating class. The past 4 years he has spent his time sharing what he has learned through teaching youth classes in martial arts. He was selected and attended the 2020 Kentucky Governor Scholar Program.

Tell us about your martial arts career. When and why did you get started and where are you now with it?
I began martial arts 11 years ago. It has been my entire life, it is the reason I am who I am. I have taken this more seriously than anything else. When I was eight years old I began competing and have continued to do it throughout my career. However, I wouldn’t be here without my family. They are the reason I began, I remember seeing my cousin at a demonstration at a local event and I felt like I was in a trance and since then I have been in love with martial arts. Today I still have the same love as I did when I was a child. I still attend tournaments and push myself to do better every competition.

What is a favorite memory from martial arts?
Ever since I began martial arts there have been many incredible experiences, but I believe that achieving my black belt was my greatest accomplishment. Receiving my belt gave the greatest feeling and made me feel like I was on top of the world. It showed me that everything that I had been doing had paid off.

When & why did you start teaching and what do you hope to most instill upon your students?
I began teaching as soon as I got my black belt in 2016. I initially began teaching after I got my black belt, this was because I wanted to pass my knowledge onto other students. As I continue to teach, I hope to not only pass on the art itself but the values that come with it. I want to teach my students about respect and discipline.

Tell us more about your love of music. Where do you play and what does it mean to you?
My love for saxophone and music comes from my dad. He played saxophone in high school and I followed him, joining the band in my sixth-grade year. I continued to be in the band up until my junior year. I had to choose between my love for music and the possibility of getting ahead in college classes, and I chose the college classes. However, I still play saxophone in my free time and I still enjoy it. Music allows me to express myself by playing whatever type of song I want. I can show my emotion not through my words, but through the sounds that come out of my instrument.

What does it mean to be in the Kentucky Governor Scholar Program? How were you picked for this, what does it entail on your end and what are your goals with it?
Being a governor scholar means that you have proved yourself that you can multitask and adjust to a crazy schedule. It shows that you can successfully prosper in school and juggle many activities in your day to day life. The application process is intense and competitive, you must do essays and short responses of each activity, service, and awards. Then after becoming you attend a week at a college campus where you can learn about college life and how these schools work. Governor scholars should keep their values in check and live your life to the best of your ability.

Claudia Harry – Florida
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Todd Harry
Photography by Gissela Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Claudia Harry is a smart, sweet, and kind young woman. A strong Christian that is always trying to help those around her. She has a beautiful heart and a strong will. She thrives at school and cheerleading. She works hard on all her goals. She loves to travel and spend time with her friends.
PicturePhotography by Gissela Photography

Tell us about your cheerleading career. When did you start, what is your team like, and what do you love most about it?
My career started in 6th grade when I joined an all star team. My freshman year I made the JV team at Fleming and our team was 6th in the nation. I am in my 2nd year. This year’s team is a good group who all have a special place in their heart for cheer and I’m lucky to have them. I love everything about cheer, but with Fleming we are not only a team, but a family. I’ve grown as a person and cheerleader in only two years. Fleming Island Cheer will always have a place in my heart.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
My favorite memory from cheer would have to be my first pep rally as a cheerleader. All schools have pep rallies and most students get to enjoy them from the stands but I had the opportunity to enjoy it from the mat supporting my school. I loved being involved in the activities and chants we led the students through, and being able to perform for my school.

Why is your faith so important to you and how has it helped you stay strong in hardships?
My faith is important to me because being a Christian is more than knowing the bible and going to heaven. Being a Christian gives me a relationship with God, who sent his son to die for us and now we can be free in Him who gives strength and hope. I think one of the most important things when going through life with my faith is that I know I find my identity in Christ, not others opinions or the mistakes I make. Staying in prayer, reading his word, and knowing everything happens because of God’s plan keeps me going in life.

What do you think is the biggest struggle for you and your friends right now and how are you helping everyone overcome it?
I think some of the biggest struggles for my friends and I right now are things like stress from school, family problems, and relationships. I’m trying to help people overcome these struggles by being someone that they can always go to and trust with anything. I think gaining people’s trust as well as letting them know they’re not alone is important. I try to remember that God is in control but that we also don’t need to carry our burdens alone. We have not only Him to lean on, but our friends too. Staying positive and communicating with each other helps.

We know it's been tough to travel this year, but where is your favorite place you've traveled to so far and where do you want to travel to next? Tell us a little about each.
My favorite place I’ve traveled was our trip to Europe. We got to go to four countries and see so many different cultures and beautiful views. We visited London, Paris, Greece, and Italy. It was like a dream, all the places were breathtaking. During this trip I learned so much and had fun with my family. The next place I want to travel to is Hawaii. Even though I did love Europe I am a big beach and summer person and Hawaii is such a beautiful tropical place so I would love to go there.
Picture

Three things on my bucket list are to travel to Hawaii, get into a good college, and win a national championship with my cheer team.

Someone I find inspiring would have to be my older sister Sofia. I am so lucky to have my sister in my life and I’m beyond grateful for our relationship. My sister is such a beautiful girl inside and out. We have been through so much in our lives with family issues, having our parents divorced at such a young age and all the obstacles we’ve had to go through has been hard but she is definitely someone who keeps us going and keeps both of us strong. I love how she is such a good friend and always loves to have fun. My sister has accomplished so much in her life and I have always looked up to her. She is in her first year of college right now working to be a nurse practitioner. She is a God loving and hard working person who inspires me everyday.

Renaissance Woman (I am well versed in several of the above listed categories, including; artist, athlete, leader, performer, scholar, health, food, team, volunteer, and role model)

Please share with us your passion for running. When, where and how did it start and what about it has increased your passion over time?
I first started running Freshman year when I joined my school’s Cross-Country team. I joined a sport so I could meet new people to help me assimilate to the new high school environment. I specifically chose Cross Country because I was inspired by my dad who was once an avid runner, and my becoming a runner inspired him to start running again after a 10 year hiatus.
My passion for running grew every time I felt excitement after racing well or setting a new personal running record (PR) and seeing all my hard work and training yield positive results.

Tell us about your award and what it means to you.
I received the Most Improved Runner Award Sophomore and Junior years, and, as a Senior, I also recently received the Most Valuable Runner Award. The Most Improved Runner Award is presented to the runner whose race times have improved the most from the previous year. My Freshman 5 kilometer PR was 26 minutes and 38 seconds; after setting a new PR every year of high school, I finished Senior season with a PR of 20 minutes and 24 seconds, more than 6 minutes faster! The Most Valuable Runner Award is presented to the runner who has made the most long term progress throughout high school and whose progress serves as an inspiration to underclassmen and middle school runners.
I’m extremely honored and humbled to receive these awards because the only way I could have progressed so much is due to the continuous support and encouragement from parents, coaches, and teammates.

How do you motivate underclassmen and what tips and strategies do you share?
I motivate underclassmen by waiting for them during our runs at practice to make sure no one gets left behind. Also, when watching them race (before or after my own race), I encourage and cheer loudly for every runner on our team. I tell my teammates to catch the runners in front of them, keep their heads up, and work together to pace surrounding teammates.
Other tips and strategies I share are to run consistently (every day except one off day a week), incorporate lifting and bodyweight exercises into a routine, stretch frequently, eat clean and unprocessed foods, and drink plenty of water.

We love that you volunteer as well. Tell us where you volunteer and your favorite experience.
Thank you! I volunteer at my local Food Bank, my local YMCA, Miss Dana’s Diamonds Cheer and Tumbling (assisting special needs cheerleaders and preschool to middle school aged cheerleaders), and Crown Community Theater, as well as several one day events such as helping at 5K run fundraisers. My favorite volunteering experience is organizing boxes of food at Second Harvest Food Bank for senior citizens in need. Nutrition is very important to me because of my extremely active lifestyle, so helping to provide nutrition to others is personally rewarding to me.

You have a lot of leadership experience as well. What have been your favorite and how have they been so important to you?

My favorite leadership experience is volunteering for my local YMCA’s Summer Camp. I believe instructing and directing the children was such a valuable experience because it taught me how rewarding it is to encourage children to engage in teamwork. Teamwork is a skill that I learned the importance of during my many years of running with the Cross-Country team. The children were excited to work together and all quickly became friends when I joined them in soccer games and crafts.

Spartan Racing falls under the category of OCR (Obstacle Course Racing). It is a trail run with obstacles for an extra challenge added in! My family and I learned of Spartan through a TV commercial and we have been racing them ever since. I qualified and raced in the Spartan Kids World Championships and placed top 20 even after suffering from a back injury the night before! Through Spartan, I have made so many friends and I have gained a second family! The community is so uplifting and has changed my life forever!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a great love for Jesus and my goal for life is to tell as many people as possible about His grace and love for us.

Tell us about your great love for Jesus and how you spread His grace and love. What do you love best about your Church Youth Group?
Ever since I was little my parents have taken me to church! I always loved the worship music and getting to see my friends, but I never really understood God’s grace until I moved up to the youth group in 6th grade. My pastors, Kevin Dunn and Nathaniel Gray really have a way of preaching to your heart. I had the opportunity to speak at my middle school’s FCA and I was struggling on finding a topic I felt comfortable preaching on. The night before I was to speak, I read Psalms 139:14 and I had this great idea about how we are each fearfully and wonderfully made, how we each share different character traits of God’s, and how we are a family not enemies through Christ. I had Youth Group the night before I was to speak, and I was sitting in the back row listening to Kevin Dunn preach and he happened to preach on the same topic and he even used some of the same verses I had picked out. It was at that moment that I truly knew God is real and he is going to change my life for the better. It was at that moment that I knew I was All In.

PicturePhotography by Digital Memories by Debbie Koehler

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would love to talk to people about how life is a rollercoaster. To get to the top you have to start at the bottom. I would love to try and get others to see the best in things even when they may be at their lowest point. I would love to encourage them that things can get better if you are willing to try and make them better!

What is one of your favorite memories from one of the school activities your Great Aunt listed (choir, sports, academics)
Attending a Public School is never easy for anyone and I had some rough moments, but there were a few teachers that helped me through everything! My chorus teacher, Ms. Beaty brought joy for singing into my life that I didn’t know I had. Ms. Beaty gave me my first solo and right before I was to start singing during our concert, I looked over at her and she just gave me the biggest smile and I knew that if she believed in me that much, I was going to be fine. Playing sports for my school was another huge thing that helped me through my days. I would push myself to train and workout not just because I wanted to be good, but because it was an opportunity for me to focus on something other than my troubles!
Picture

We would love for you to tell us more about being the school yearbook photographer manager.
When I applied to be in Yearbook, I knew I had to follow in my Mom’s footsteps, so I applied to become a photography manager. I oversaw photos that other people wanted to submit for the yearbook, and I taught people how to use a camera! It was so much fun and one of my favorite experiences!

3 Things on your bucket list
I would love to run a 5k in every state, complete the Dopey Challenge at Disney, and try at least 10 different kinds of gelato in Italy!

Who do you find inspiring?
There are so many people I find inspiring! Some of my top choices would be Zendaya, The LaBrant Fam, Lucy Hale, Sadie Robertson and her wonderful family, Heather Gollnick, and Nicole Mericle.

Tianna Geiger – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by MyJdProductions
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: If you ask anyone to describe Tianna in one word, it would be kind. She is known for being a friend to everyone and always having a big smile on her face. She is very involved in school, playing volleyball, basketball, tennis, track, running cross country, and dancing competitively, while also being a member of National Junior Honor Society. She is inspiration to others by always having a positive attitude, being such a hard worker, and never being afraid to try something new.
Picture
Photography by MyJdProductions

Tell us what sports you are currently playing/practicing and which you dedicate the most amount of time with. Do you play them all for school or are you on other teams as well?
Besides dance, I am currently playing volleyball and basketball. I just finished up cross country season and will do track and tennis in the spring. Those are all school sports, and I play basketball for a select team as well.

What is a favorite memory from one of the sports you play?
One of my favorite memories from one of the sports I play is from track season last year when I was running the 2400m. I wasn’t feeling good and didn’t start as well as I usually do and was in 8th place. But I refused to give up and kept pushing myself. The last straight away, I gave it all I had, and ended in 2nd place!

When did you start dancing and what is your favorite type of dance?
I started dancing when I was two years old, and this will be my seventh year to dance competitively. My favorite style of dance is contemporary.

Picture
Photography by Nina Price

Please share a favorite memory from dance.

My favorite dance memory is when our dance team went to Disney World last year to perform. It was also my little sister’s first year to dance competitively so it was so fun to share that memory with her and how excited she was.

Why is being a member of NJHS important to you?
Being a member of NJHS is important to me because it not only recognizes academic achievement, but leadership and character achievement as well, and challenges me to maintain my academics at that level. It also challenges me to be more involved in school activities and community service.

What is something new you tried this year? Tell us about it.
Something new I tried this year was volleyball. I have never played before, and I didn’t decide I wanted to play until a week before tryouts. I knew I had a lot to learn in a short amount of time. I worked every night the week before tryouts, sometimes staying after basketball practice until after 10pm.

Your nomination mentions you are known for being a friend to everyone and always having a smile on your face. How can others follow this example?
From the time I was little, I always have treated people as I would want to be treated. It’s something my parents taught me, and I’ve always followed it. And if someone is having a bad day, it may just take a smile in the hall to let them know that they have someone that cares about them.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Trust in God, work hard, always try your best, and don’t be afraid to try new things.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself in college studying to be a counselor. I also want to dance for the dance team for whatever college I attend.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity or pastime is spending time with my family and friends.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I could present a topic to a group of my peers, it would be to not be afraid to try new things and also, that it is okay to fail. The most important thing is to just try your best and to never give up on yourself. Sometimes we can be our own toughest critic, but always believe in yourself and have faith in God.

3 Things on your bucket list
•Swim with dolphins
•Snorkel in the Bahamas
•Visit Niagara Falls

Who do you find inspiring?
Many people have inspired me in my life. I have been blessed with amazing parents, grandparents, family, teachers, and coaches.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my positive attitude inspires others. I think I am inspiring to others because I’m not afraid to try something new and work hard for it.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
It definitely can be a challenge at times. There are some days where I go from early morning volleyball practice, to school, to cross country practice, to dance, to basketball practice, and then have to come home and do homework. I just try to plan ahead on my schoolwork so I never get behind.

What got you interested in soccer? What position do you play and what do you love most about it?
I have been playing soccer since I was 5 years old. It is a sport we have always played and as I grew up watched my little brother and sister play as well. My father was my coach until I went to high school. I play defense and love playing all year round.

Tell us about your community service time focusing on the environment. How did you decide to do this and what do you do?
Community service has been something our family has always done. I was raised with it being a part of our life and service to others. My father is an environmental change teacher, and he has instilled in all of us how important it is to care for the world around us in every action we take.

When did you go to Costa Rica? What was it like and what did you do there that benefited the planet? How did it change your perspective of the world?
We, as a family, go to Costa Rica every year and became close to one of the surf teachers.  As a result, I went for a service visit while living with his family in modest living conditions. I realized how different the world can be for tourists and for those who live in the community. I was able to work in the recycling plant, clean the beaches and help re-build the library in that community my sophomore year.  Living with his family, speaking Spanish and learning about their traditions and close family relationships as well as the diversity amongst a country changed my perspective of the world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I spent my first 13 years attending Hebrew School and having my Bar Mitzvah inspired me to become an assistant at the School for many years. In addition, I am very passionate about become fluent in Spanish. My experiences in Costa Rico and living with a family has changed the way I view the world.

What is something that you attribute to getting over your shyness?
I feel like it is important that those who are shy know that taking risks help find your true voice. I spent a summer at Philips Exeter Academy summer program because my father taught there. I spent 5 weeks meeting people from all over the world. That experience of living without my parents taught me more about who I was.

Picture
Photography by HM Collins Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I love soccer. It has brought me closer to my friendships. For my Bar Mitzvah project, I collected sports equipment for third world countries. For the last two years, along with me family, we have collected balls, uniforms, and cleats to bring to Costa Rico teams. We have played soccer with these teams and inspired by their love of their sport. It is very rewarding.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever accomplished was taking the risk to show people who I really was going into high school. After spending the summer at Philips Exeter Academy I gained confidence in who I was.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to be your true self always, no matter how hard it is.
Picture
Photography by HM Collins Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself in college or abroad.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Working with technology

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Playing the piano by ear.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Do not let your fears hold you back because you could miss out on so many opportunities.

3 Things on your bucket list
Study abroad, become fluent in Spanish, become more skilled in technology

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that I inspire others with my humor and ability to laugh at my mistakes.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I stay on top of things when they come up and make sure I complete everything without procrastinating.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I did not share my love of music in terms of the ability to play piano by ear since I was 5 years old.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
If I were to be interviewed, I would like to talk about my family, hunting, or softball.

Tell us about your family and what you love about spending time with them.

I’ve grown up as an only child with my parents, Alvin and Amy. My dad has taught me how to do the things I love the most, which is playing softball and hunting. My mom has grown to be one of my best friends. She is my number one supporter in everything I do. I just love being around my family.

When did you start hunting, who do you hunt with, and what all have you hunted for?
I’ve hunted for as long as I can remember. My parents started taking me to the deer lease with them when I was just a toddler. Mom told me the first time I went hunting, I sat in the stand with her. I was only 3 and she just wanted me to be able to see deer in the wild. She didn’t think we would actually see anything because, well, toddlers aren’t quiet. But we did see a doe and I told my mom to shoot it. I actually shot my first deer when I was 6 and I’ve been hooked ever since. For years I have hunted in the same stand with my dad, but now, since I’m older I hunt by myself. For the most part, I just hunt deer and pigs.

Picture
Photography by KMcMinn Photography

Please share one of your best memories from hunting.
One year we had pictures of this unique deer and I decided that he was the one I wanted to harvest. I named him GMF (Grand Master Funk). His antlers were really crazy looking. He had been seen at my dad’s stand several times, so I sat with Dad in hopes that he would walk in. We sat in the same stand for 3 days (morning and evening hunt) and I never saw him. The next day dad and I decided to change stands and mom sat in dad’s stand. Well, GMF came to the feeder while mom was sitting there. She texted me and asked me what I wanted her to do…shoot him or let him walk and risk not seeing him again. I was hesitant but told her to shoot. She did and we looked for him for hours and never found him. (I thought she might have missed). The next morning, I sat in Dad’s stand and the first deer that walked in was GMF. I was able to shoot him after all. When we got to him, we saw a mark where mom’s bullet had grazed his belly.

When did you start playing softball, what position do you play and what do you love most about being on your team?
I was only 4 when I started playing. I’ve been on several different teams and played out field, catcher, and now I’ve found my favorite spot on the field, First Base. I love being part of the softball team because we are like a family. I wouldn’t be able to get through some of my hard days if it wasn’t for my teammates.

Picture
Photography by Jimmie Green
Tell us about your faith in God. What do you want others to know about it?
I became a Christian when I was 6 years old. I consider it the most important decision anyone could ever make. I want others to know that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. I hope when people look at me they can see Jesus through me.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have always had a heart for special needs students. I love seeing them be successful and I love being able to help them and encourage them.
I have a hard time describing myself, so I asked a few people who know me best.
One of my family friends described me by saying, "Kelsi has one of the kindest hearts I’ve ever seen. She genuinely cares for others and wants to see them succeed and that is rare. She has treated my daughter, who is much younger than her, so well over the years and has always watched out for her. Went to bat for her, protected her behind the scenes, so to speak, never looking for any type of recognition or thanks. Just doing what a good person does, what a true friend does. I have told my wife on several accounts that I hope and pray our daughter grows up with the same character as Kelsi. I can’t brag on her enough. She’s just that one in a million person that comes along and I’m very glad that we get to have a little piece of her in our lives." (Tom Edwards)
My softball coach described me by saying, "Kelsi is truly an inspiring young lady because not only does she always believe in herself, but she also believes in others. Kelsi is constantly pushing herself to be better at all times, whether it’s on the softball field, in the classroom or in a leadership role for the team, school, or community. One example of this is when we had a foreign exchange student from Spain decide to join our team last year. She had never played softball before and spoke little English, but she wanted to be a part of something while she was here. Kelsi gladly took her under her wing and spent extra time after practices and even on some weekends to help her learn to throw, catch, and hit. I know that Kelsi’s actions inspired all of us." (Nineveh Blankenship)
My teacher and student council advisor describes me by saying, "Kelsi is one of those students whom every teacher and advisor loves. She is not only a wonderful student, she is also a fantastic young lady. Although she is now in high school, she is one young lady I will always keep up with and will continue to follow. To describe Kelsi is very hard to put into words. She inspires so many that she is around. What I find so unique about this characteristic is that in the time when teenagers are so easily influenced by their peers or the media, Kelsi seems to take it all in and keep only what will help to accomplish her goals set before her. Another characteristic that should be stressed is that she is a hard worker. She has a way of getting others to work and accomplishes this with a positive attitude. She goes above and beyond in all of her school work, student council and all aspects of her life." (Kim Taylor)

Picture
Photography by KMcMinn Photography

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

One of the hardest things I have accomplished throughout the years would be starting on the varsity softball team my freshman year in a brand new position that I had never played before. I worked really hard to learn the position, stayed for extra practice, took lessons, and made sure the coaches knew that I was willing to work to earn the position.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Put your faith in God and He will help you through all the trials of life that He puts in front of you. Having God also reminds you that you're not alone in anything you do.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
My plans after high school are to go to college and get into nursing school, so I can become a Neonatal Nurse.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Besides playing softball and hunting, I really enjoy hanging out with my friends. My best friends names are Emma and Bailey and we are inseparable...we are more like sisters than anything!

3 Things on your bucket list
⁃ Jump out of an airplane with my dad.
⁃ Swim with the pigs in the Bahamas.
⁃ In time, be the best mom I could possibly be to my children.

Who do you find inspiring?
I think my mom is inspiring.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think work ethic and my ability to show empathy for others inspires people around me. I think I'm inspiring because I’m willing to put in whatever it takes to get the outcome I want.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
Sometimes it gets very crazy around my house. But my focus is always on school so I can keep my grades up and stay up to date on my schoolwork. When it comes to doing all my hobbies, they are at different times of the year. So in the fall I hunt and in the spring I play softball.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I have a puppy named Hank he is a Miniature Schnauzer. I got him for Christmas in 2019 and ever since he has been my little shadow.

Jessica Stabile - Pennsylvania
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by Linda James Photography
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jessica Stabile is a sweet, energetic, intelligent & kind young woman. I've had the privilege of knowing her since she was in preschool! She works hard at everything she does. She's a star basketball player & currently the only senior on her team, enabling her to be a strong leader. She maintains excellent grades, serves as a rep on my senior model team, captain of her basketball team, mentors freshman students and works a part-time job at a retirement community. She plans to study forensic science in college & pursue a career in the FBI.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Throughout my life, diversity, equity, and inclusion have been extremely important to me. Everyone is not the same and we all face challenges. These challenges could be because of our race, religion, gender, sexual identity, or even medical condition. I was taught to accept everyone from a young age because my father has epilepsy. I have seen first-hand the discrimination and struggles of someone having a disability and it shaped me into a person who is not afraid to stick up for what is right and who wants to use their voice to make a difference. The stigma surrounding my father's medical condition fueled ignorance and discrimination throughout his life. It is time to flatten the curve on ignorance to people with medical conditions and disabilities. I am and will continue to be an advocate for educating my peers on the importance of inclusion and equity on all levels. One initiative that I am actively involved in at the student level is a freshman mentoring program at my high school. My goal through this program is to address issues of bias and judgment to create a more empathetic, equal, and welcoming community.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Through my experience in mentorship and leadership, I learned that everyone experiences adversity, and these problems or situations can be easily overcome with the right support system, attitude, and direction. My mentorship and leadership roles game me a new perspective on the importance of providing a positive and welcoming climate in new, challenging situations. It is important for teens to look for those people and groups that are there to help and provide guidance. This has taught me that we do not make this journey all by ourselves, but it is up to us to seek out the right help and be brave enough to accept that help.

Picture
Photography by Linda James Photography

We love that you are taking a leadership role on something you are so passionate about. Tell us about your freshman mentoring program - how it got started, how often you meet, how you address the issues, and how you feel the group is impacted and carries the message outside of the group.
Link Crew is a national program designed to help facilitate the freshmen transition into high school. As a Link Crew Leader at my high school, I am assigned a group of freshmen each year to help them navigate through their freshman year. We start to build relationships with our group in the summer with various activities, which continues throughout the school year. Drawing on my past experiences and challenges as an incoming freshman, I encouraged students to join new activities, helped them identify resources for academic help, provided frequent communication on social activities, and talked through issues that students were experiencing. I stressed the importance of trying new activities even though they may be intimidating at first, and to not be afraid to reach out for help when they are struggling academically or socially. I enjoyed watching my group grow as young adults and face and conquer their struggles head-on. Most importantly, this program provided a positive school culture and climate and the lessons will carry over in all stages of life, far beyond their freshman year.

Congratulations on your success in basketball. Tell us what you love about the sport, how long you've played, a favorite memory, and what legacy or thoughts you want to leave behind to the underclassman players.
I have been playing basketball since 2nd grade when my dad was my first coach. He helped mold me into the player that I am today. Since then, I’ve played in multiple leagues and played in tournaments all over the United States with some of the most talented athletes in the country. My favorite memory is from my junior year when my high school team traveled to Florida to compete in a national tournament. We took first place and also grew tremendously as a team. I truly enjoy my role of team captain and providing leadership and mentorship to the underclassmen. I am sure the underclassman players may not remember how many games we won or lost in a particular season, but I hope they remember how I made them feel as a person and teammate both on and off the court.

Tell us about your model team. What do you do in it and what do you love best about it? Why would you recommend your model team to upcoming seniors?

I am fortunate to have worked with Linda James Photography on her teen modeling team as well as her senior team. I appreciate that Linda provides a welcoming environment and fun opportunities for the group to regularly meet, acts as a mentor, and makes us all feel equally confident. She has a talent to perfectly capture each of our unique personalities, whether it be in a group or individual shoot, and I would highly recommend upcoming seniors to get involved so they can make some irreplaceable memories and meet new friends their senior year.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I plan to be graduating college with a degree in forensic science and criminal law with hopes of pursuing a career with the FBI.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to travel and attend concerts with my friends. I have traveled around the country to see my favorite artists. I have really missed concerts during the pandemic and can’t wait until I can attend them again!

Sydney Miller - Ohio
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nominated by Angie Yoder
Photography by Lady Brio
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sydney Miller is inspiring because she was burned 60% of her body when she was 15 months old and she has never let that stop her from doing what she wants to do. She even wants to help kids in similar situations as her when she grows up.

Tell us about your injury, recovery, and overall outlook on the experiences you've had as a result.
My injury happened when I was in a car accident at 15 months old. I was burned 60% of my body. I grew up learning and adjusting because of this injury and overall I would say it's made me a better person. I have been to burn camp to help kids with similar or worse burn injuries. These kids helped me as much as I helped them. After camp, everyone would go back home happier and more confident than before. Camp helped me grow as a person and it helped me realize I wouldn't be where I am now without my burns.

How do you want to help kids in similar situations in the future?
After high school, I plan on getting my nursing degree and working in the pediatric burn unit. I know my way around burns which makes it a perfect fit! I can help kids cope with the pain I have had to endure or tell them what they should expect from one surgery compared to another. I would also like to go back and be a counselor at burn camp, to show kids that if you put your mind to it anything is possible.

What are your hobbies? Which is your favorite, and what do you spend the most time doing?
My hobbies would include reading, golfing, watching movies, and hanging out with my friends and family. My favorite would be hanging out with my friends because I never know what to expect with them because they always have some crazy adventure planned.

How did you get started playing golf? How often do you get to play, and where is your favorite place to golf? Please also share a favorite memory involving golf.
My burn injury caused me to stop playing volleyball because my feet couldn't take how aggressive I was on the court. I needed to play a sport for high school, so I chose golf. It has been so much fun playing with my team! I would play a lot when I had matches but now I just play whenever my friends are free. My favorite memory from my golf career would be getting Culver's with the team after a match. This is our go-to restaurant and it's become a tradition.

What do you think is the most challenging thing facing teens/you/your friends in general during this phase of covid, and what are your recommendations for getting through it?
I think school is really challenging during covid. We grew up learning in a classroom setting and we have gotten used to learning that way. So, learning online or hybrid makes it a lot harder to understand the concepts that are being taught. I think that it's important to ask questions when needed and form a study group chat with your friends so you can help each other better understand.

You are very inspiring. Who do you find inspiring?
I find my older brother to be inspiring because he saved my life when he was only 8 years old. He is also someone who has been a great role model to me growing up. He has always been there for me when I need him. My brother has also supported me in everything I do. I don't know where I would be without him.

Jon Cader – Louisiana
Interview by Inspiring Teens Team
Nomination by Misti Cader
Photography by Sprig Designs
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jon Michael Cader (Jmike), is an outstanding Christian role model at Ouachita Christian School. His outgoing personality along with his willingness to help others in need are just a couple of his great qualities. He is the epitome of what a student athlete should be and is a natural leader not only on and off the field but in the classroom as well. He holds a 4.8 GPA, scored a 29 on the ACT, is a member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He will be attending Mississippi College after graduation, majoring in Pre-Med with aspirations to become an Anesthesiologist while playing baseball for the MC Choctaws.

Academics and Baseball are both particularly important to you. How do you create such high success in both, and where do you attribute the value of your high standards for yourself in these areas? How do you balance them both?

I believe to be successful in anything you must be passionate about it, and this is what creates the drive to put in the extra work required to succeed. From a young age my parents instilled in me to strive for nothing less than excellence, and all goals are obtainable as long as I am willing to put in the work and effort to achieve them. Balancing them both is surely a juggling act and a skill I am still learning to master, but ultimately academics is always first.

Let’s talk about academics first. Your GPA and ACT scores are outstanding. Does learning come easy to you or do you have a special study secret you would like to share with us?
Unfortunately, learning does not come easily to me. Maintaining my GPA requires a lot of effort. This year, I was struggling in AP Calculus, and I had to get a tutor to help me understand the material. Though this may not be a secret, refraining to procrastinate reduces stress and prevents a homework overload.

Where did your interest in going Pre-Med begin and why did you choose Mississippi College? What type of Dr. do you plan on becoming and why?
I have always wanted to go into the medical field because of the joy I find in helping others. The science behind the human body has always been an interest of mine. Healing and bettering a human being are extraordinary in my eyes. I chose Mississippi College because they offered me a scholarship to play baseball for them. During my official visit, I learned not only that they have the best pre-med program in the state of Mississippi, but also the only cadaver lab. I plan on being an Anesthesiologist. Though I love helping others, the profession will also provide a sound financial future.

Tell us about your baseball career and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. What are your positions/roles and what do you love about them?
My parents started me in baseball at the age of 4. I started playing travel ball around 8 years old. Around the age of 12, I developed a burning passion for the game. I have been fortunate enough to play baseball all over the United States, playing with some of the best talent in the country. I have played for prestigious programs which helped mold me as a player. As a Ouachita Christian Eagle, we won a state championship my sophomore year. Now, I am fortunate enough to further my athletic career at the collegiate level. I am primarily a middle infielder while also competing in the starting rotation as a pitcher. I love to compete. From the minute I step between the lines to the moment I hear “ballgame,” it is game time. I also love the role of leadership I have taken up in mentoring the underclassman.

What is your school like, and what legacy or positivity do you hope to leave behind to the underclassmen?
Ouachita Christian focuses on a college prep education while preparing its students for time and eternity by instilling Christian values in us. OCS athletically competes for state championships in multiple sports year after year. I hope to leave behind a positive Christlike legacy. When my name is brought up, I hope the thoughts of hard work, dedication, and child of God are mentioned.

Tell us about your family and why you wanted to include them in on this interview.
I can never put into words how much I love my Family and thank them enough for making me strong, loving, caring person I am today. In 2007 not only did I lose a little sister, but my Parents lost a daughter and instead of giving up they made their marriage stronger than I could imagine. They not only showed their love for each other but for us and anyone in need of it. They showed me to never give up and keep fighting for what I want and love.

When did your interest begin of taking pictures and what are your favorite things to take pictures of?
A few years ago, when I finally realized how beautiful everyday simple things could be, like sunsets and families just spending time together. I love taking pictures of outside things but most of all when my little brother and sisters play sports.

What hair styles do you like to do best, and who do you get to practice them on?

I like to braid hair and put them into different styles, I practice them mostly on myself but sometimes on my little sisters.

Tell us about the sports you play & which is your favorite.
I like to play a little of all sports, but my favorite is basketball. Throughout my school years I have played basketball, volleyball, softball and ran track. I love the intensity of game and making sure we work as a team throughout the game not matter the outcome of the game.

What is one of your favorite sports memories?
My favorite memory is the past couple of years I’ve been held back from my sport’s due to several injuries but not giving up and being able to come back stronger my senior year.
