Avery Reynolds

Picture

Avery Reynolds - Georgia
Nomination by Christy Reynolds
Photography by Amy Honea Photography
Issue 49 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Avery Reynolds is a kind hearted, beautiful soul that loves God, her family and her friends. She gives her all in everything she does. She has a soft spot for animals and people with disabilities or people with special needs. She will take up for others when they have no voice. She is a strong advocate against anti bullying. She loves going to church, spending time with family and friends. Going on mission retreats for her Augusta Christian high school and participating in community service acts around the community. Avery has cheered for her school and competitively since elementary school, She truly is an outstanding teen.

What else should we know about you?
I’m a strong advocate against bullying and cyber bullying. My story is one of many that happens every single day. I was lucky my school stepped in with their zero tolerance on bullying. But not every school has this zero tolerance policy in place. That should be a standard policy in all schools starting in elementary school through high school.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I met this beautiful girl named Meredith, she has special needs. She truly changed my life because of the love I have for her, I want to become a special education teacher. We have the sweetest bond. She’s non verbal but she communicates with you through sign language and hand gestures. You know when she cares for you because she gives you the most important things that mean a lot to her, her iPad and her Disney bracelets. She is the funniest person I know. She has brought so much joy into my life, and for that I am internally grateful!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would definitely talk about bullying and especially cyber bullying. People can be so cruel behind a computer screen. I know, I was severely bullied, I would never want anyone to experience that. I didn’t smile for a very long time. I was truly broken but the support of my family and my faith in God I finally began to smile again. I know this form should be joyous but we must recognize the lasting affects on bullying on children and teens as this is the number one cause of teen suicides. No one should ever make you feel unimportant. Inferior or less than anyone else. Always talk to that person no one wants to talk to, sit with that person at lunch that sits by themselves. Anyone can stand up and against bullying it just takes one voice. One person to make them feel whole, important, valued and seen. Because you truly matter!

Alexandria Johnson – Georgia
Nomination by April Johnson
Photography by Amy Honea Photography
Issue 49 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Alex has a heart of gold and inspires me to want to be a better mom daily. She has overcome many obstacles in her life and continues to see the good in others.
Alex aspires to become an elementary teacher. She is currently dual enrolled in college and assists a local first grade teacher.

What else should we know about you?
I own an art business call Watered with Wisdom. I love all things painted. I love Jesus and he is the reason I live each day full of joy, love and so much more. I have the sweetest little sister named Charlotte. She is 8 years old, and I adore being her big sister. She is my world. I try to always be the best role model for her.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a passion for helping children. I believe it is one of my biggest callings in life. And one day I would love to pursue teaching. The biggest thing I have had to overcome is anxiety. It was and still is a huge part of my life. I have learned how to not let anxiety hold me back from living my life. Anxiety doesn’t control my life anymore. I overcame my anxiety through Jesus. I owe everything to him.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
My topic would be teaching and helping children. I have a 1st grade class that I help each day. It is my absolute favorite. Creating a bond with a child, is so special to have. Every morning I’m greeted with a big hug from each of them. And when I leave each of them give me a hug goodbye. It’s makes my day every day. They are sweet, fun, loving, silly, and amazing kids. I enjoy each day watching the growth in each of them. It’s so beyond amazing to see the how some of the kids didn’t know how to read that much at the beginning of the year and now can read lots of books with no help. It’s a true blessing to be able to touch and shape and child’s life. That is the sole reason why I would love to become a teacher.

Tell us about your love of dogs and your goal to donate to animal shelters. Where did this all stem from and how did you get started?
Ever since I was a little kid I always grew up with animals. I have always loved animals and wish I could adopt all the ones without homes or just in bad situations. I think all animals deserved to be loved and have a happy home life.

What do you donate and where do you get it from? Do you have any specific goals for this school year with it?
I donate all sorts of animal food to the shelters. I use the money that I have from my job. I have also had birthday parties where all I asked for was animal food instead of presents. I do hope to volunteer at animal shelters this school year and to help find homes for the animals without them.

Share your love of soccer. How did you get started, how long have you played and what position/s? Where are you now with it?

My love for soccer started at a pretty young age. As soon as I learned how to walk and run, I started soccer, it is all I have ever known. I tried other sports, but nothing stuck like soccer. I have played all positions throughout my life. I have played goalie, forward, midfield and defense. I now play outside left defense, and I have been playing there for my whole high school career. I am hoping to continue my soccer journey my senior year and be a team caption.

What is your favorite memory of soccer?
There are so many amazing memories playing soccer all these years. My favorite memories are probably all the amazing friends that I have made. My most memorable moments were my junior year at Grovetown high school.

What is your favorite accomplishment with it?
My favorite accomplishment is winning region last year. Never in our high school history we have won region until my junior year. What made it the most special is the team that I won it with. The feeling when the final whistle blew, and we had won region was the most accomplished I have ever felt.

What was your senior portrait experience with Brian Wintrode Photography like?
My senior portrait experience with Brian Wintrode is amazing, he always makes sure that his clients get what they wanted and asked for. He makes the photoshoots fun and exciting.

What was most surprising about it and what did you love most about it?
The most surprising and what I love the most is how every photoshoot is a different experience. It is never the same.

Nomination: Taylor Spivey is inspiring because she always makes sure everyone else is taken care of before she takes care of herself. She has a huge heart and an amazing personality.

What should we definitely know about you?
There is the country side of me. I love getting all dolled up, but most days you can find me in the yard working or hunting. My papa passed away a few months ago and I want to make sure I make him proud my senior year.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
It does but cover my love for animals. I have a bunch of pets myself, but they are more like family to me. It also doesn’t cover plan to teach after I graduate, so I can help kids like my favorite teacher did me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
The Alzheimer’s association is the topic I would want to present. My papa passed away from dementia a few months ago, so this is very near and dear to my heart. This is a association that I would really like to help and spread the word about.

What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about helping people and that is why I want to pursue a career in Occupational therapy. I want to be able to help people develop and improve skills that they need in to do in everyday life.

Tell us about the sports you play in and a favorite memory from one of them.
In High school I was played softball, did competition and sideline cheer and was very active in dance. One of my favorite memories from softball was hitting in the winning run of a playoff game my senior year.

PicturePhotography by Kaylien Muller Photography
Share with us your love of fine arts.
Dance has always been a big part of my life; I have been dancing since I was a little girl and I love performing. I also love art, especially painting and drawing. With my mom being an art teacher, I have always been involved in her classes and summer camps. Art and dance have always been a stress reliever for me and a way for me to express myself.

What community service do you do and why is this important to you?
Recently I started helping with a summer recreation camp with kids with disabilities. I am really enjoying it and I am learning a lot. Community service is important to me because it is important to give back to your community and help people in need. You can learn so much and, in the process, you are doing something for others.

Picture

Tell us more about your cooking business.
I love cooking and enjoy cooking for others and seeing them enjoy what I cook. I thought cooking for others over the summer was a good way for me to make some money for college expenses while also helping people in the community. Most of my customers were mothers who were working and needed something already fixed for their kids for supper. I really enjoyed helping people out while also doing something that I enjoy.

What leadership roles or lessons have you learned along the way?
I think the biggest lessons I have learned is the importance of hard work and patience. My parents and coaches have always taught me the importance of hard work and how far it will get you.

What's next for you?
I plan to finish my bachelor's degree and apply to Occupational Therapy school. I want to keep being involved in community service and opportunities through being a member of Phi Mu.

Tabitha Johnson

Picture

Tabitha Johnson – Georgia
Nomination and Photography by Robin Chance
Issue 46 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Tabitha Johnson has worked really hard and will obtain her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse from our local college in a couple of months. She chose the health industry because she loves to help others and has a passion to learn.
When she is not attending school and working, she loves to draw, run, write, bake and do research as well as spending time with family and friends.
She plans to work for a short season at a local hospital and continue her education to become a registered nurse and specialize in cardiology.
Tabitha is very positive and is eager to make her mark in this world and after working with her, I know that she will attain her dreams and impact those around her.

Picture
Photography by Robin Chance

Tell us more about your nursing career. Why did you choose that path and what is your biggest goal?
I chose nursing so I could get answers. My mom has fibromyalgia and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). More so when I was younger, she would go into what are called Fibro-flares. I didn’t know at the time that GAD caused her Fibro-flares, so I clustered her symptoms to research what disease could be the culprit. My search resulted in many different possible answers but no solution. I wanted to find a reason behind the pain and distress she was in. By becoming a nurse, I believed that I could help others find a reason and solution for their pain.

What have you done so far to help you in your nursing career?
Recently I have applied and gotten a job as a nurse extern in a hospital. This job has allowed me to assist and work alongside other nurses. So far, it’s been an amazing experience. Extremely tiring, but truly amazing. It has allowed me to gain even more experience than I have in a clinical setting. I have rubbed shoulders with some of the best nurses, I believe, in the world. I hope to one day be as knowledgeable and perceptive as they are in my nursing career
Tell us more about your drawings. What do you love to draw the most and with what type of medium? We would love to see a picture!
I love drawing cartoon characters. I love the exaggerated features and the relatable expressions they possess. My siblings and I have had little to no art lessons. We pretty much learned from each other’s mistakes to form our own unique drawing styles. My go-to drawing medium is a mechanical pencil and a thin-tipped Sharpie. I usually use sketchbooks to house my artwork, but there’s nothing wrong with notebook or printer paper every once in a while. I just enjoy expressing myself through drawing. It helps me decompress and regroup.

Share with us your running experience. Do you run for fun or do you have higher and higher goals? For example, have you ever run a 5K or more?
I actually used to run track and cross country in high school. Because there were so many races, I didn’t enjoy track that much. With cross-country, you only have one race to get ready for; one race to give your all. I enjoyed cross country not only because of the one race but also because of the long bus rides and the new people I met. During the summer, I ran 5ks with my older sister and my dad. It was a good way to stay in shape for the next season and a good time to hang with my dad.

Picture

What do you like to write about and what has been your favorite plot?
I enjoy writing about different life experiences in my blog, journaling to express the things on my mind, and writing short stories. Writing short stories is so much fun. Forming the different characters and brainstorming the different plots is quite invigorating. Only one of my books is typed, waiting to be proofread. The other needs lots of proofreading, plot changing, and overall help. When I write, I want it to mean something; I want to inspire people to think. I believe many can write books, but only a few can make you think about the topic at hand.

Sydney Bell

Picture

Sydney Bell - Georgia
Nomination by Amber Bell
Photography by Angela Williams Photography
Issue 46 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sydney has been an inspiration to so many around her, especially me! In October 2019, Sydney was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Though this new diagnosis was very scary and life altering, she never asked God why. Every day Sydney gets up and lives her life to the fullest, never allowing this disease to get in her way! In 2020, Sydney became Drum Major at her school (which was a huge dream of hers) and was elected Junior representative for their homecoming court. This proved to her that no matter what is going on in your life, your dreams really can come true! God is going to use this girl in some mighty ways!! We are beyond proud!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I am in band, musical theater, and many academic clubs and associations at my school.

Tell us about being a Drum Major. When did you get into that and why is it so appealing to you?
Being a drum major is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments that I’ve achieved during high school. It has helped me grow tremendously as a leader and helped me find my voice. My grandmother was a drum major when she was in high school and growing up being a drum major never really caught my eye until I was in 7th grade. I had gone to a high school football game and watched the drum majors conduct the fight song and I thought it was the coolest thing and decided that was something that I really wanted to do once I got into high school. Now I’m going into my second year as a drum major and I’ve not only grown as a better leader and musician, but a better me.

Picture
Photography by Angela Williams Photography

What did being the Junior representative for your homecoming court entail and what did it mean to you?
This year, my junior year, of high school I really stepped out of my box and started doing things I normally wouldn’t. During the time of homecoming elections everyone was campaigning to be on the court and I decided at about 10 pm the night before that I would run as a joke. The people of my class voted and when the results came out and my name was on the list I was shocked because I was fully expecting one of the other students to be our representative. I was honored that the students of my class thought that I would be a good fit to represent our class on the court. It was an experience I will never forget.

Picture
Photography by Angela Williams Photography

What academic clubs do you belong to and which do you find yourself spending the most time in?
This year I am in Beta, National English Honor Society, and just recently got inducted into National Honor Society. I find myself spending the most time in Beta club because of all the service projects I have worked on. Some of my favorite service projects I’ve completed were working at the Christ Chapel share and care in Ringgold and also going over to one of the elementary schools around me to help with their water day.

Picture
Photography by Angela Williams Photography

What is the biggest leadership role you've had in one of the clubs and what did the job require of you?

Since I am a junior, I don’t have a leadership role in one of the clubs, but I was chosen by the officers in Beta club to be a speaker at our induction ceremony, which meant I was representing the junior class and speaking on behalf of them.

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

Tell us how you found out about Amy Honea's senior model team and how you got involved?

The first time I heard about Amy’s model team was through Instagram. I have also known Amy a few years now through church. Amy was searching for her CO’ 21 models and asked my mom if I would like to be a part of the team. I was kind of hesitant at first because I had never modeled before or even considered myself to be a photogenic person, but my mom insisted that I do it because it would be an awesome experience and she was more than right about that. Being a part of the team has been the best part of my senior year and I have also become more confident in myself along the way!

What was your first photo shoot like?
My first photoshoot was a skater girl theme! I got the opportunity to travel to downtown Augusta where we did some cool shots in front of tunnels, graffiti walls and rustic brick walls. I was pretty nervous because this was the first photoshoot and there were also about 3 other girls there with me staring at me while I got my photos taken so it was a little bit nerve racking at first, but Amy was super supportive and helped everyone along the way.

What do you love most about Amy and being on the team?
What I love most about Amy is her passion and vision for what she does. Every photoshoot with Amy is so unique and well thought out, there is no other photographer out there like her! She does whatever it takes to get that perfect shot. I have enjoyed being on the team so much because I have gotten to meet so many new people and make great memories along the way. Also, I have a ton of pictures that I will cherish forever.

Photography by Amy Honea Photography

How did the pandemic affect your goals to be where you are now?

The pandemic has definitely affected my goals and what it took to get here. The medical career pathway I take at school was supposed to go to the hospitals and do clinical rotations but because of covid-19 that was unable to happen unfortunately.

What was one surprising thing that came out of the pandemic in a good way that would have never happened otherwise?
Once the pandemic started everyone was locked inside their houses with nothing to do. After a few months of this I was so bored out of my mind that I told my mom I was going to get a job. I then began searching and landed a job at Nothing Bundt Cakes where I have now been working for a year. If the pandemic would have never happened, I would have still been playing lacrosse and not have even thought about getting a job.

Tell us about your lacrosse career from the start to where you are now. What is a favorite memory or accomplishment? Will you be playing in college?
I started playing lacrosse my freshman year up until junior year of high school. My favorite memory of being on the lacrosse team was the bond that I built with the girls on my team. Lacrosse taught me so many things about life and especially how to commit to something every single day and give your very best even if you’re not having a great day. I will not be playing lacrosse in college, but it will always have a special place in my heart, and I will always be grateful to have been a part of the Greenbrier High School lacrosse team.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? Kindness towards each other. These days it seems as if two people don’t have the same opinion or agree it never ends okay. Instead, we should just learn to be kind to each other no matter the circumstance. To me the most inspiring people are those who truly have a heart of gold and give to others without expecting anything in return.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would love to talk about my journey as a Social Media Influencer, how it all got started, and how it has opened doors for me and led me into my greatest passion which is modeling and acting.

Tell us all about this.
I started out with Musical.ly. I really enjoy dancing. It is probably one of my favorite things to do. I started making videos in my backyard. Once TikTok took over, I just continued on that platform. I spend a lot of my time working on creative and entertaining vids for my followers. Through a lot of hard work, I have built a fan base just slightly less than one million. I also merged over to the Instagram platform and currently have a following of 113K on Instagram. I am working on starting a YouTube platform soon.

What doors has it opened?
As my social media influence expanded, I began to be contacted by management teams wanting to help further develop my career. I was able to sign with a manager who has really helped me find great opportunities to expand my horizons and getting in to acting and modeling.

How do you get to combine modeling and acting with being a SMI?
It is a very busy life for sure. This is my first year of college so trying to balance college with staying socially active and driving to a lot of auditions for modeling and acting gigs can be quite the juggling act. I believe getting an education is very important so I have had times that I had to make the tough decisions to focus on school, but I think my family, my manager, and I all do a great job of making sure I have a healthy balance.

What are a few first steps to share with others who may want to get into the SMI business?
I always tell people to just be themselves. We are all unique in our own way and find those qualities that make you unique, believe in yourself, and just be confident in putting yourself out there.

How has covid affected your roles both as an SMI and with modeling and acting?
We were all greatly affected by Covid. It has been a long journey that challenged me in many ways. I always try to focus on the positive in things, so I took the opportunity while spending so much time at home to really focus on my social media and pay attention to what my fans wanted to see from me. It actually allowed me to have the time and energy to really expand my following and I tried really hard to put a smile on people's faces that viewed my videos and pictures because I know it has been a difficult time for all. The comments from fans that mean the most to me are when they tell me I put a smile on their face or made their day brighter. Covid did put a temporary slowdown on the modeling and acting gigs as so many things have had to shut down. As things have slowly begun to open back up, I have recently been able to have more opportunities to work on my modeling and acting passions.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am the fifth child of nine. I grew up in a very challenging environment with limited material things and resources, but I have been able to overcome these challenges and I am the first in my family to go to college. I try to give it my best in whatever I do and always look for the positives in every person and every situation. I have looked at the obstacles in my life as life lessons and it has given me the determination and strength to stay focused on the goals I want to accomplish in life. I am very blessed to have a very supportive intimate group around me that are mentors, friends and family.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I think I would talk about my family. I grew up in a very large household. We were very poor and had many struggles. I lost a sister at a very young age and there were many hard times. I was very blessed though because I was able to have an extended family and others who took me under their wing and made me part of their family too. By staying focused and positive and determined to show my family you can overcome all the things life throws at you, I am hoping it will inspire not only my siblings but other teens going through difficult times to believe in themselves and know they can overcome anything.

Photography by skilled_life

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

I grew up in a tough environment, so I had to grow up really fast and figure out how to take care of myself. I am the first in my family to finish high school and I just believe determination to bring myself out of that environment gave me the drive and inspiration to overcome.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Stay focused and positive and determined and you can overcome all odds.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I would like to have my college degree in Business Management and hope to either be running my own company or being a successful SMI.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to play the keyboard. I also enjoy swimming, going to the beach, and traveling.
Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? I can crack most any of my bones at any time to the point that it grosses people out.

3 Things on your bucket list:
I would love to walk in New York Fashion Week. I am also focused and determined to be the first in my family to get a college degree. I also hope to visit California one day.

Who do you find inspiring?
I would say my uncle. He was very supportive of me growing up. He always worked to keep our family together. I lost him very tragically this past fall shortly after I went off to college, but I know he watches over me.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope it is because of my positivity. I reached a very low point in my life at an early age and have had a lot of difficulties and tragedies in my life. I got through it but staying positive and believing the best was yet to come. I want to always portray that message to others. Stay positive and good things will gravitate towards that energy. I hope to always bring a smile to people and hope they find joy in my social content.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I want to tell people to never give up on your dreams and if you are having a bad moment in life, remember tomorrow is just around the corner. Embrace your life and make it the best for you.

Briley Holder - Georgia
Nomination and Photography by Stephanie Q Durham Photography
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Briley may be small, but she’s mighty! Despite being bullied at times, Briley is proof that mental toughness trumps physical strength. In the summer before her Junior year, she backpacked across the mountains of Europe with eleven strangers as part of a leadership program. Her journey took her across four countries in 23 days. There were times when Briley was crying in pain, asthma inhaler in hand. Instead of giving up she showed steadfast determination and persevered. As a result of that experience, Briley now confidently stands up for herself as well as others who are otherwise seen as weak.

What would you most like to be interviewed about? Tell us about it!
The summer going into my junior year, I decided to take a step out of my comfort zone and go on a backpacking trip through the Alps and Pyrenees in Europe. When I got to the airport and saw 10 girls I have never met, I immediately knew it would be the best and most challenging three weeks of my life. We hiked and slept in hostels, living out of a backpack the whole time, which is not something I was used to. We also got to go sea kayaking in Spain. This does not seem like a traditional “fun” trip, but I turned out to be the best experience of my life.

What is a favorite memory from that trip?
We were sea kayaking and my arms just gave out; I couldn’t paddle anymore, so me and my friend got clipped to the back of a speed boat and dragged behind the boat on our kayaks. It was the best time and definitely an unforgettable experience.

What is one tip you'd advise someone taking the same trip in the future that you learned?
I would suggest that you go into the trip with an open mind and a willingness to be pushed outside your comfort zone. The trip is 100% what you make out of it, and you have to have an open mind and a positive attitude, or you won’t have any fun. Make the best out of every moment because it flies by.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LSS) Student of the Year Fundraiser, which is an eight week fundraising event for LLS. I was able to raise $15K over the course of 8 weeks by giving business presentations at the corporate and personal level. All the teams that participated were able to jointly raise over $1.6 million for LLS.

What was your senior portrait experience like with Stephanie Q Durham Photography and what did you love most about it?
Stephanie truly is a miracle worker! She made everything so fun and tailored the whole shoot to my personality. She put so much time and consideration into the shoot. Surprisingly, I hate having my picture taken. But with Stephanie, I was laughing the whole time and actually excited to continue the shoot.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
The importance of staying true to who you are even when it gets hard. These days, especially with social media, it is so easy to get caught up in comparison. However, it is so important to realize people show the highlights on social media. Never change for anyone. It sounds difficult to do, but your differences make you stand out, so you should embrace them!

What do you love about videography? What do you like to film/create the most?

What I love most about videography is bringing the crazy visuals in my head to life! I honestly like to film and create my own content the most, for example I push out content every week for my social media platforms as an influencer. The type of content I create for myself is fashion videos (YouTube videos, Reels, TikToks, IGTV Post) and of course pictures.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a multimedia business creating graphics, videography, and photography. I love men’s fashion!

Tell us about your Graphics business. What got you interested, how did you get started, and what do you love working on most?
I started my Graphics business last year in the middle of the pandemic, and it unexpectedly took off. At a very young age you could catch me looking out the window or wondering looking at a poster of some kind, the different styles, fonts, and mixture of colors is what caught my attention. My favorite type of Graphics to work on is Birthday Graphics.

What interests you about men's fashion? What would you say your style is?
The different styles and colors in men’s fashion is what grabbed my attention. My style is Casual/Streetwear. I don’t go too deep in casual; I don’t go too deep in streetwear. Take the two and mix them together then you have my style!

What will it entail for you to be a n upcoming social media influencer? How did you get involved and what about this endeavor excites you?
A Consistency of new and fresh content is mainly what it takes to become an influencer. I was thinking to myself one day, here are my exact words “You spend all this money on clothes and shoes and you’re not getting anything back from it”. Then I started thinking deeper, I could become an influencer then soon after growing my base monetize my social media platforms to gain profit from it. Not knowing what will happen as far as growth, viral videos, and new opportunities is what excites me the most.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I could talk about being successful and wealthy in life FOREVER. Me and my friends have long talks about our future now. I love it, having these talks with my friends opens my eyes up and makes me realize it’s really possible!

MaKenzie Meeks – Georgia
Nomination and Photography by Amber Bounds Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: MaKenzie is a sweet, strong and well rounded girl. MaKenzie is involved in Cheer, FFA, and FCCLA, and she is a Diamond Girl for the baseball team. Last year she had to overcome major obstacles to be able to cheer in her senior year. MaKenzie was hurt in an ice skating accident that threatened her high school cheer career! She was crushed at the thought of not cheering, but with hard work after surgery, MaKenzie was able to do the required jumps to make the squad just 5 months later! MaKenzie knows first hand how quickly things can change and how to work hard and strive to overcome and get what she wants.
Picture
Amber Bounds Photography

Tell us about your cheer career. How did you get started up through and past ice skating injury and how you overcame it.
I started cheering when I was in the 1st grade. I loved it and nothing has changed! I cheered all the way through elementary school and once I got to Middle school/high school, I had to try out to make the squads. It was very stressful because I wanted it so much! I only made the football squad for my jr. year and was not grandfathered in for my senior year. This meant I would have to try out again if I wanted to cheer as a senior. The ice skating accident happened at the end of my jr. year. This meant I didn’t have long to heal before tryouts, and I was still required to make my jumps to make the squad. Because of covid, tryouts were postponed and I was given more time to heal and more time to work on my jumps. I used a small trampoline to help me get ready for the jumps. With all this practice, physical therapy and a lot of prayer, my jumps were perfect!

What did you learn from your experience with your injury?
I learned firsthand about depression and anxiety. I learned that it can happen to anyone and that as a friend you should always be there for that person. I am so thankful for the friends who stuck by me and were there when I needed them the most! Sometimes the ones with the biggest smiles are the saddest.

Picture
Amber Bounds Photography

What do you want us to know about FFA?
I have been involved with FFA since I was in the 6th grade! I love it, and have learned a lot from being in FFA. I have competed in many different forestry and floral competitions. I also went to FFA summer camp and had a blast! Every year we go as a group to the Ga State Fair in Perry, Ga. One of the best parts about FFA is the advisors, I have been lucky to have some of the best they went above and beyond for all of us.

How is it being a 2021 Sr Model for Amber Bounds Photography?
When I was chosen as one of Amber’s Sr models it was a blessing! I needed something good to happen and it has been so much fun. She has pushed me out of my comfort zone and captured photos that I never knew possible. Being one of her models has boosted my self esteem. My favorite shoot was the snow shoot!

Picture
Amber Bounds Photography

What is another accomplishment you are proud of?
I am very proud that I have been able to keep my grades high enough to be an Honor Graduate. It was something I had almost given up hope on because of being on hospital homebound. But I studied and worked hard, and I will be graduating from Coffee High School as an Honor Graduate in May.

She will have over 30 college credits when she finishes her High school career. She plans to attend VSU in the fall and pursue a degree in Sports Medicine.
Not just a spectacular student, she is an outstanding athlete. Brayden has been a competitive cheerleader since the age of 8. She has cheered at the middle and high school level as well as being on an All-Star Cheer team.
She began playing soccer her freshman year in high school. She was named to the First team All-Region her freshman year. In her sophomore year, she was named the Region Player of the Year. As a senior, she was named the captain of her soccer team.
Brayden has a goal every day of bringing a smile to the faces of the people she meets. She is a true inspiration to others!

Would you most like to be interviewed about?
my academics and athletics

What would you like to share about your academics?
While being in multiple sports and extracurricular activities, I have managed to keep honor roll all four years through high school and a high GPA. I was awarded Top Ten last year and i am working hard to remain in Top Ten when i graduate in May. Even though athletics are an important part of my life, i always make sure academics are my top priority. I always set goals for myself and strive to meet them at any cost.

Tell us your athletics journey. How did you start and what do you play now? What is a favorite memory or accomplishment?
I started in Gymnastics at the age of 2. I continued to compete at multiple levels until the age of 8. It was at this age that i won my first national title. After winning this national title, i decided i wanted to try something new. I joined an Allstar Cheer Gym and started competing on a level 3 competitive team. I grew to love cheer and continued competing for several years. My team and I obtained a national championship at one of the largest competitions in the U.S.. That was one of my biggest accomplishments that i had worked for in my life. During those years, i was also a competitive dancer at Pirouette Dance studio. Now during high school, i have done Sideline Cheer, Competitive cheer, and Soccer.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
i would say that inspiring motivation is my strongest leadership quality. I believe that nothing is impossible especially when someone else believes in you. I like to be the person that helps others believe that nothing is impossible. I find joy in helping others achieve their goals and accomplishments.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My junior year i moved to a different school, and i was not eligible to play any sports. I was really upset, but i did not let that stop me from doing what i loved most. Instead i used my talents to help others in the community. I volunteered as the middle school competitive cheer coach. I also volunteered with the Varsity soccer team and was named the team manager. This made me feel as if i was contributing and sharing my experiences and knowledge of both sports. I enjoyed forming a bond with players and coaches at that time.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
Being kind to everyone because i have set that to be my goal in life. You never know what someone is going through or if they are having a bad day, and just smiling or saying hello could make their day 10 times better. i know it may sound cliché but it is something that i really strive to do every day.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself hopefully getting into med school and working on my degree in sports medicine.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes, I also enjoy singing. I started by singing in church and competed in the Junior Talent competition with my church and won at the age of 9. I started taking voice lessons, and went to Nashville, TN for a showcase. That was an awesome experience that i will never forget. In Elementary school, i sang solos for school programs. I continued singing solos in chorus in middle school. After i got into high school, singing was in the shadows because of sports and academics. I still enjoy singing with my friends during carpool karaoke sessions in my car.

The Nomination: Gabriell Mann sets positive examples for others and always strives to do her best with a positive attitude! She is enrolled in her second year of college classes. She served as class president 9th-11th grades, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Leo Club, Key club, and served as her class homecoming representative her 9th and 11th grade years. She has competed in Track & Field since she was in the 4th grade and is very passionate about running. She works hard and excels at everything she does!
Picture
Photography by Carolyn Griffin Photography

How did you develop a passion for running?
My passion for Track & Field actually began in the 4th grade! During P.E., boys and girls who wanted to claim the title of the fastest kid in 4th grade were given the chance to race each other. I jumped at the chance to race every day and not only consistently beat all of the girls, but the boys as well. My natural ability did not go unnoticed and my mom received a letter inviting me to attend a school state Track & Field meet. Again, jumping at the chance to race, I competed in two different events and placed second in each of the events. Continuing to pursue my passion of running, during my 5th grade year I was the only elementary student to participate on the Junior Varsity Track & Field and Cross Country teams. I won races against 8th graders and set school records. Since then, I've continued to grow in my running ability and am now in 12th grade, a member of my high school track team, USATF, and the Jacksonville Florida summer club team.

Tell us about your Track and Field experiences now through covid.

Although Track & Field through covid has presented challenges, I've developed another level of commitment to running by working out and practicing on my own. When our school track season was cut short last school year, I was more determined than ever to continue to pursue excellence.

What was it like to travel to Nationals in California and Kansas? What did you run and what were the results?
Traveling to Nationals in Kansas and California was the experience of a lifetime and the reward of all my years of hard work. At Nationals, I competed in the triple and long jump events placing in the top 20 in the US in each of these events.

What are your favorite memories from Nationals?
Sharing the experience of running at Nationals with my biggest fans, my mom and grandmother, is a memory I'll cherish for life.

Where do you plan to attend college and what degree do you plan to pursue?
After graduation, I plan to attend Kennesaw State University to pursue a degree in biology then ultimately attend medical school. While at KSU, I will also continue my passion as a member of the KSU Track & Field team. I've always dreamed of attending a big college with an amazing Track & Field team and KSU was the perfect fit. I am extremely excited and honored to be a part of this team!

She has been a competition and sideline cheerleader since the 6th grade. She will be attending Jacksonville State University in Alabama and hopes to cheer there. Tell us about your cheer career - start to finish.
I started recreation cheer when I was a little girl. I loved it despite being incredibly shy. I also did competitive gymnastics for about 13 years. In high school I have done competition and football for all 4 years and it’s been the best experience of my life. Cheer teaches you how to work with others and what teamwork is all about. Competition has a rush of adrenaline and has made me learn what hard work and dedication is. In football you get to be into the football game and feel all the emotions and frustrations of the football players and you get all the different perspectives of a Friday night football game.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
My favorite memory is my sophomore year when we went to state and we made it to day 2 of state. It was an amazing feeling knowing all this handwork finally paid off and I got to experience it with people I loved the most and we all worked so hard.

Picture

How has cheer helped you overcome anxiety?
When you’re doing competition and football cheerleading, you are the center of attention to a huge crowd. This was a struggle for me in the beginning, but I soon got over it. It helped me overcome anxiety and show me it’s possible to step out of my shell. Conquering this fear has given me so much confidence and I am so thankful that cheerleading has shown me what I can accomplish.

How does your struggle with body image and eating disorders come into play?
Cheer is a hard environment to be in with body image issues because you are constantly seeing different body types and comparing yourself to everyone. It became a huge issue. I was not educated on how dangerous this mindset could be and I felt trapped inside my own thoughts. I think every teenage girl I have met has struggled with this and they are not educated on why its bad for you and they don’t know how to get out of this mindset and get rid of this disorder. It’s not talked about enough and that’s why I would like to bring light to it.

You belong to a lot of leadership clubs and organizations. Which one is most important to you and why? Which one do you spend the most amount of time in, and doing what? And which one do you hope to leave the biggest legacy, and what is the legacy?
I think the one most important to me is Beta club because I had to work hard and keep my grades up to get into the club. Also, we do a lot of volunteering and it helps the community and its one of my favorite clubs to contribute to.

Bailey Jennings – Georgia
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Monica Jennings
Photography by Carolyn Griffin
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Bailey is an overcomer! She has had many academic challenges due to some learning disabilities that were diagnosed in 9th grade, when all the credit-bearing classes begin to accumulate for graduation GPA. We moved her to a smaller private school during the summer after her 10th grade year. That in itself is hard for a teenager, new friends, new school, and a new city.

Picture

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would want to be interviewed on my passion for Flyboarding and how as a girl it’s a very uncommon sport, especially in South Georgia. I got started last summer and I enjoy doing it with my dad at our houseboat at Lake Blackshear.
Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover my love for art. I recently took on a huge project which was painting my schools bathroom to help bring a smile to girls who might be feeling overwhelmed or lonely due to Covid-19 outbreak. I put fun paintings and brightened it up so everyone could at least have something to make their day better. Animals really inspire me, when I paint especially a lion or tiger would have to be my favorite thing to paint.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (
What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
Social Media. Myself included I spend way to much time on my phone to the point where I don’t even acknowledge my friends who are in the same room with me. We all just sit on our phones and because of COVid-19 it has only gotten worse, because you can’t go out and do fun things anymore. Phones are ruining everyone’s perception of each other and we have this picture of what someone should look or act like because of society today. I think one solution to getting teenagers off phones is community service or small groups to help our world, because we will all look up from our phones one day and see just how much the world needs our generation to stand up and make a difference.

Ansleigh Youngblood - Georgia
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Deena Youngblood
Photography by Amy Honea Photography
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ansleigh Youngblood is a creative, unique, and inspiring young woman. She is comfortable setting her own trends and loves to make a statement. Ansleigh is very passionate about her views on women and racial injustices. She has her own opinions and thoughts, and she doesn’t conform. She is not only confident in her beliefs, but she is knowledgeable about the reasonings for her beliefs. Ansleigh is extremely giving and compassionate. She is known for her acceptance for everyone and her encouraging attitude towards anyone she is around.
To explain Ansleigh in a few words would be, “inspirational advocate to always be yourself.”

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

Please tell us more about your views on Women's Rights and why you feel so strongly to not conform
.
Women’s Rights is so much deeper than the surface issues that have already been fixed. Women’s Rights is being able to be comfortable with yourself and not having to worry about male agenda. It’s about taking a walk and feelings safe. It’s knowing your voice is heard and important in a room full of men. It’s not allowing yourself to be talked over, pushed aside, or counted out. I refuse to conform and settle for any less because in the future i want women to be respected all of the time, heard all of the time and treated as equal, all of the time.

Share with us your beliefs on racial injustices and how you advocate for others.
My beliefs on racial injustice include simply demanding equal treatment and basic human rights for EVERYONE. There should not be a single person in this world that is treated differently or feels less than anyone else due to the color of their skin. When I get older, if I choose to have children, I plan on teaching them that they are no more and no less than anyone else and they should always value and respect people despite the differences between them. And in my opinion, that’s what everyone should strive for. All the stories of injustice recently have hit me very hard, particularly Breonna Taylor’s case. When I heard the verdict my heart sank and if I didn’t know before, i knew then there was still work to be done. I truly believe there is entirely to much hate in this world and I refuse to be a part of it or be close to anyone who allows/supports it. With that being said I chose to be an ally, and I will stand by this.

What issues in foster care hit you hardest and what do you feel should be done about it?
I always knew there were very prominent issues with foster care but it wasn’t until last year in Ms. Fox’s AP Lang class when I was required to put together a research paper on the issues in foster care that I really understood it’s seriousness. The foster care system is like a second chance for kids that haven’t been in the most fortunate of situations but, only when executed correctly. The number of horror stories in foster care I read in preparation to write my essay was nothing short of devastating. Kids did not ask to be brought into this world and we have to do better for them. It’s like a trend, just when one story ends, there are plenty to follow. I believe that when issues arise, they should never be swept under the rug. I’m sure everyone is pretty familiar with Gabriel Fernandez and the events to follow his death. In his story if actions had been taken the first few times authority figures were contacted, a child would still be alive today. A few ways to help improve this system is supporting social workers, placing focus on prevention, making sure there are proper assessments and that the children and families have proper resources.

Tell us about your love of art, your mom's nonprofit and the mural you're painting there. (Please also send a picture of it so far if you have one!)
For as long as I can remember I’ve loved art. I’ve even painted and designed almost every wall in my room. Art is something that has become therapeutic for me. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, frustrated or anything really I can paint or draw to bring me almost immediate tranquility. I recently started painting a mural for my Mom’s nonprofit business in my city. This business is dedicated to my Grandmother and being that she was one of the most giving and loving people i have ever met, being able to do something for the kids who attend there feels fantastic. All the kids told me what they like and I’ve been trying to incorporate all their favorite things in the mural. So far we have a green dragon, a ginormous sun, flowers, watermelon and a robot. I love seeing their faces light up when they see their idea finished on the wall.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t strive to be where anyone else is. Strive to be where you want to be and never left other people dictate your choices and opinions. We are all different and that is what makes us strong. So instead strive to be your most authentic self.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I plan on being finished with college or close to it. If I’m not yet finished with college, I hope to be studying abroad. But if I am finished, I hope to be started on my career in speech pathology helping people. If possible, I’d want to be working with trauma patients specifically. Overall, I just plan on being happy. In the future if my plans change and I don’t get to do everything I dreamed of, I just hope I’m happy and never allowed myself to become content.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Another one of my favorite activities is skateboarding. I’ll admit I’m not very good, but I find it so fun and I’m still working on learning a few tricks

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
Full transparency, when I’m exceedingly busy it’s hard to keep my schedule straight and I usually find myself stressed, overwhelmed and annoyed. But that’s just human nature. We find ourselves biting off more than we can chew and after plenty of struggle and heartache we preserve, somehow. It would be dishonest of me to say I have a perfect plan for busy weeks. The important thing is that we get through it the best we can.

What inspired you to want to play soccer and cheer? Is balancing the two sports ever hard for you?

I was inspired to do cheer because I have been in gymnastic since I was 3 and when I got to middle school, I wanted to support my school and be on the Competition team. I had never played Soccer before middle school, but I love to stay active and wanted to give it a try. I love both sports! Balancing both sports is not too hard...I think doing both sports helps me in each sport with my strength and endurance.

What is your favorite memory from cheering with “Cheer Savannah”?
My favorite memory is when I first came to Cheer Savannah, I automatically felt welcome. I started all stars there at level 6. I was nervous to come into a new gym where everyone grew up together, but they all welcomed me like family and I’m so thankful for that. That’s something I’ll never forget.

What is the difference between your school team and cheering with an all star team? Does it ever get confusing for you to remember different routines because you are on different teams?
Both teams are very competitive and are great teams. All stars is a higher level where I can use more of my higher skills and learn new ones. It challenges me and I love to be challenged. I never confuse the two. I guess because I have had plenty practice learning routines my whole life it is something is easy to remember.

What does it mean to you to have your family by your side through everything you do?
I couldn’t do it without them. I am so thankful for everything they do for me to help me be successful.

What are some goals that you have for you future? Do you hope to continue with cheer and soccer?
At the moment I hope to Cheer in College. Unfortunately, Soccer does have scholarships where Cheer doesn’t have many choices so that makes it harder to choose. Either way, I plan to attend college in a sport because I feel that playing sports actually helps me with school. It helps me stay focused to be active.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
My “full” in tumbling. It was a challenge and there were lots of times where I was discouraged and upset. I had a mental block, But I was determined and once I overcame it then my skills after that seem to come a lot easier.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t give up when you have hard times. To be able to get better and see good results you have to go thru hard times. Times where you want to quit but you don’t. My mom never let me quit or give up and today I am thankful for that. I think it has taught me to not give up on lots of other things in life.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I would be in my first year in college. I want to be a pediatrician.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I enjoy hanging out with my friends and going to Friday night football games.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would really like to talk about not giving up when times are hard. I think that even though I’m talking about sports, that it really helps you in other areas of life. It makes you think outside the box. That you can do anything!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
When I was 5 , My mom taught me to sew. Now, I can pretty much sew anything without a pattern.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Go to bora bora, 2. our cheer team to make it to worlds this year, 3. go parasailing

Who do you find inspiring?
My tumble Coach, Victoria Brown. Not only does she teach tumbling, but she really shows so much support to everyone around her. She has even prayed with me when I needed it. I’m thankful for her!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Well, I can’t say for sure, but I try to help others and encourage them. Especially when it is something I have been thru and I’m able to know how to help. Either way, I try to do what I can.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I am super excited to be a part of this interview and I hope that I can be a part of helping others with my story.

What do you love about working with children where do you work with them?
I have been working with kids for years at church through many programs like Sunday School or Vacation Bible School, where I knew I was meant to mentor students and later find a career where children are a part of my life.  While growing up in Girl Scouts, I knew earning my Gold Award was a goal I wanted to achieve, so naturally incorporating the two essential parts of my life together was undoubtedly an easy solution for my award.  I worked in an elementary school setting up a mentoring program before the Covid-19 Virus disturbed the program.

What has been your favorite memory from working with kids? Why?
My best memory of working with a student is always the energy.  I cannot ever pick one memory that I love or is my favorite over another because I would be choosing a child over another, and I can't do that.  I enjoy working with all the students and kids I meet, and each time I help a student or have fun and play a game and see them smile, I know I am doing what I am supposed to do. Being able to make a kid smile, even when they are having a bad day, is the best feeling.

When did you find your passion for working with children? When and how did you know that you wanted to get a degree in bruising working with children?
Once I started High School, I was introduced to the medical pathway, and I knew I wanted to heal sick children.  I want to have my Doctorate in Nursing working specifically in the pediatric intensive care unit.

How long have you been modeling, and what do you love so much about it? What has been your favorite photoshoot?
I have not been modeling but a few months, but I have enjoyed these last few months.  It is such a release of energy and so freeing.  So far, my favorite photoshoot was in the sunflower field. I am so excited about everything my photographer has planned.  I love being with other models when we can, although we cannot be together like we could be.

How do you encourage your fellow models during shoots and how do you make the best of every shoot?
I like to let my model friends know how beautiful they are inside and out.  They are the kindest people with so many talents, and they know all have cool ideas with clothes and make-up.  I love talking to them and seeing their style in play during our different photoshoots.  I am just lucky to be a part of the team.  It is a special time in all of our lives, and it's our Senior Year during Covid-19, so we have to make it the best!

What choices have you made and what things have you experienced in life that have helped you grow as a person and in faith?  Some experiences in my life that have helped me grow as a person and in my faith was when both of my grandparents on my mother's side of the family passed away from cancer. These two events were extremely hard for me and the only thing that gave me true peace over those two situations and helped me to get through it was God. Those events helped strengthen my faith and trust in the Lord, because it showed me to trust him even when you do not understand what he is doing at the moment but know that he does everything for a reason as well as has a plan and a purpose for each of our lives and the things that happen. Without the Lord I would not be anywhere near the person I am today, by no means am I perfect because none of us are the only one that is perfect is God, but if I did not have him i would not have the strength to face even half of the bad trials life throws at me but because I know the Lord as my savior I am able to overcome the trials with his help.

How had your grandma influenced you and impacted your life?
My grandma impacted my life by the way she fought her battle of ovarian cancer. She was incredibly strong and never gave up. I watched how the cancer affected her physical health and how it made her very weak, but it never broke her spirit and she never questioned the Lord during it. She had courage, even in the hardest time of her life, she gave it her all and fought as hard as she could.

Tell me more about how you have worked with your local dog rescue to take in injured and neglected dogs. What is the process like for you?
When I was in elementary school my mother and another lady started a rescue group in my area called Columbia County Animal Rescue. We would weekly go to our local animal controls and take the dogs into our rescue where they would then be fostered. Our two local animal controls were high kill so when they would get overcrowded the dogs would be euthanized to make space. All dogs that would come into our rescue would be taken to the vet for medical needs and to make sure they are healthy. Then we would give it to one of the people in our rescue group to foster the dog and take care of it until it gets adopted to a new home. After we would put the dog up for adoption on our Facebook and Instagram page and wait for someone to ask about it. On many occasions my parents and I would be fostering multiple dogs at once and keeping them all in our home along with our own dogs as well. When a person is interested in one of our dogs, we always do background checks and make sure that the person has a home that would be a good environment for the dog. If the person checks out, then we would let the person take the dog and see how it goes for a couple of days and if it goes well they can adopt it. Fostering dogs has been such an amazing experience being able to take care of and help these dogs that deserve the best and happiest life.

What do you love about working with kids and what do you do when you work with them?
What I love about working with kids is how they will look up to you and you can be a good role model for them and set a good example and how much joy and laughter they bring. I mainly work with kids through my church, I am a leader at Vacation Bible School and help in Kids Worship, which is where all the kids from Pre-k to 4th grade go during church. At Vacation Bible School I am assigned a class and I am with them for the week sharing the word of God. In Kids Worship I am in small groups with different grade levels and we play games with them, learn scripture, and learn more about the bible.

Tell me more about winning the Youth National Arabian Horse Championship, what that meant to you, and what the competition process was like!
Winning my Youth National Arabian Horse Championship was very special to me and rewarding because it showed me that if you set your mind to something and really work hard and train for it you can accomplish anything. I trained with my coach all year almost every day getting ready for that competition and when I won one of the National Titles I was proud that I had a goal, set out to achieve it, and I attained that goal. The competition lasted a week and you would have classes throughout the week. The first classes would be qualification classes which normally have over 100 riders in them and if you made the cut you would be able to move on to the next round which was the final round for the National Title. In that final round the number of people in the class was cut down to around 20 or 30 and of those 30 you would have 8 that would get a Top Ten and then another person would get a Reserve Champion and one would become Champion, winning the national title.
