What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would want to be interviewed about family, friends, and just my personal life. I am very big on family, and I love spending time with them. When it comes to friends, I think of most of them as family and my personal life tells a pretty good story of who I am!

Tell us more about your family and friends and what you like to do with them.
Family and Friends are very important to me. I love spending time with them and creating valuable memories.
We don't live close to our family. One thing that sticks out the most is Thanksgiving. Each year we travel down south and spend the week together. On my dads' side of the family, I have 7 cousins and we are all very close. We enjoy going out on the boat hanging out at the sand bar and going fishing in Stuart, Florida.
Friendships for me are about quality not quantity. It is important to have a close group of friends that will be there for you to support you and encourage you to grow. They say you are a product of your surroundings. I am blessed to have a great group of friends and I am confident they are friendships that will continue after high school. We are all football fans so we are spending a lot of our time attending school football games and college games when we can.

What is it like being on the Dan Duren Photography Model Team & the Curtiss Bryant Photography Team?
Dan Duren is a fantastic photographer! I ran into Dan at a beach volleyball tournament last summer. I found him on social media following a tournament and my mom inquired about having photos captured during our tournament. I have many photos from volleyball, but Dans are one of a kind! We all stayed in touch through social media. Dan notified us of an opportunity to be a part of his model team and I immediately applied and was accepted. There are a few partner discounts as well as discounts on any photography with Dan. Most importantly we help Dan with advertising and getting his name out there. I will be signing up next year for the Under the Boardwalk Model Team. I am so glad that our paths crossed with Dan. Hoping to sign up for more beach tournaments this year before it gets cold and have Dan capture them!

I am also on the Curtiss Bryant Photography Team. I am a social influencer for CJ. CJ has known my parents for a long time. He too is an amazing and talented photographer. CJ has helped me with some basic training on modeling. CJ is who initially got me interested in modeling. We live in a small town, so the model team helps to get CJ's name out in the community and in return we get discounts on images he captures for us. CJ offers senior trip opportunities at a reasonable price anywhere in the country. I am hoping for my senior year I can pick Italy!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am an only child born and raised in Crystal River, Florida. In my spare time I love doing outdoor activities such as going on the boat and or the jet ski. Traveling is my passion; I love seeing new places and experiencing new things.

What is a favorite memory or adventure you have been on your boat or jetski?
Each year my family and I take the boat down to Marathon, Florida for Lobster Mini Season in July. I love going out days before mini season and scouting the best locations and planning for opening day. Opening day, we are out on the boat at sunrise going to the best spots until we get our limit!

Where is your favorite place you have traveled to and why?
New York City. The city that never sleeps! I have been there quite a few times over the years. A few years ago, my parents and I went to New York City and we went to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Touring the museum is an experience I encourage everyone to do. My Uncle was a rescue firefighter for 9/11. The museum was filled shoulder to shoulder with people and you could hear a pin drop. As you would through the museum it tells the story as to how things unfolded on that tragic day. It was very emotional walking through.
Christmas is the best time to go to New York City. If you're lucky you will be there when it snows! I love all the Christmas decorations, Christmas music and most importantly the Christmas tree that is set up in Rockefeller Center! Each winter we try to make a trip to visit.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I was to present a topic to my peers, it would be about volleyball. I dream about being a Florida Gator star volleyball player. I could talk about volleyball forever. Not only do I love the sport, I love how different aspects of playing volleyball prepares me for the future such as working with others, setting short term and long-term goals, and building relationships.

Tell us about your volleyball career. How did you get started, how long have you played, tell us about your team - everything!
I started volleyball when I was 12 years old. It all started when I went with my parents to a work event at their boss's house. Their daughter played volleyball for both high school and college, so they had a beach volleyball court set up in their back yard. While my parents were talking to adults, I went over to watch some girls that were my age playing. They invited me to play with them and I told them I had never played before. They were helpful, encouraging and fun! After hours of playing their mom Wanda told me she was the owner of Citrus Fusion Volleyball and if I found myself interested in the sport, I should come try out for their travel ball team. I went to tryouts and I made the same team as Wanda's two daughters. To this day we are still on the same travel ball team and Wanda's daughters are my best friends. Thankful that I went to that work event with my parents so I could be introduced to a sport that I love!

What are some short and long term goals you currently have with volleyball?
Short term goals for Volleyball is to become a starter for our high school team. I am a junior in high school, and this is my third year on varsity however I am not a starter. I was once told that if you put in the work the results will come. I never miss a practice and I always leave feeling accomplished.
Long term goals for Volleyball is to play for the Florida Gators. It is very hard to get into the University of Florida and into the volleyball program. I attend their summer camps each year and would love to play for Coach Mary Wise.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I have been a Cheerleader since I was about 4 years old, I absolutely loved being involved in a team activity like Cheerleading because I enjoy encouraging others whenever I can. Cheerleading truly establishes a sisterhood of girls with similar interests which makes it so worth it for me.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from cheer?
My favorite memory thus far was by far our recent trip this summer to UCA Cheer Camp. My team and I spent four days together, and we ended up taking home 1st Place at camp. I had the most amazing time getting to know girls from all over the state who all share a similar love for Cheerleading.

What else should we definitely know about you?
Throughout my life, growing up I felt the impact of health-related issues from my family including my brother and my dad. From this point forward, I have always wanted to pursue a career in medicine and be able to help people as a surgeon. Helping people through any difficult time they are facing has always been something to which I aspire.

Tell us about your jobs at the local medical office.
I always dreamed of pursuing a career in medicine and when I found out that I could get a head start on learning more about the field I was ecstatic. I help around the office, shadowing in both surgical and non-surgical procedures as well as help manage the Social Media platforms.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I truly believe that I have an instinct to help those who are down, and this characteristic manifested itself when my brother suffered severe head trauma and essentially had to relearn his whole life. After this, I always began to help those around me who may feel alone amongst their peers.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
There is an immense need for people to show more kindness and compassion for their peers. In this day and age, where bullying can impact you from many different sources including social media it is important to teach our youth kindness and empathy for others.

What was your senior portrait experience like with Heidi Kalpak and the Pink Peach?
My experience with Heidi was the most amazing experience I have ever been involved in, she made me feel so special throughout the entirety of the shoot and truly captured everything and more that I could’ve ever wanted.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was definitely preparing, and taking my Advanced Placement exams. It took a lot of studying but I’m happy I was able to finish the year to the best of my abilities.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell people to make the best out of the life you’re given, instead of dwelling on small incidents make the best out of the grand scheme of life. I would always say to live everyday like your last and to take part in every experience possible.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Hopefully in 5 years I will be beginning Medical School, and on-track to become a doctor like I have always dreamed.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I live in the Sunshine State, so my favorite pastime would definitely have to be going to the beach with friends, and swimming!

3 Things on your bucket list
One day I would love to travel the world, go skydiving, and make it to all 50 states!

I find my mom to be the person that inspires me the most. She always carries herself with such a positive attitude no matter what she is going through, and I hope that one day I can be like her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe that I am inspiring in the way that I carry myself on a daily basis, I will always have a smile on my face and have a positive attitude even if I’m put in an uncomfortable situation.

Caitlyn Stringfellow - Florida
Nomination by Julieanne Stringfellow
Photography by Bellamore Photography
Issue 48 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination - Caitlyn always dreamed her path to college would be as a D1 track and field athlete. She is a state medalist and received offers to attend college to be a Thrower. Sadly, she suffered a severe back injury that required surgery.  She was determined to throw again.  She indeed threw the shot put and discus for a few meets but had to stop for fear of another surgery.   She was crushed but no defeated.  She never ceases to set goals and make them happen.  She is attending Florida State University in London in the Fall.    She inspires me daily because she is FEARLESS.

Tell us about your track and field career. How did you get started, what do you compete in now and what do you love so much about it?
I started my track and field career as a sprinter in the 7th grade. I realized quickly I didn’t enjoy running that much. In 8th grade I started throwing discus and shot put and I found my niche. My freshman year I made it to the State Championship. I medaled in discus in 6th place. My sophomore year at “States” in discus I finished and medaled in 8th place.
Covid19 hit my junior year and my senior year I was only able to compete in a few meets since I was injured.
I love this sport quite simply because the toughest competition was competing against myself.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment in track?
My favorite memory in track is the SENSE of ACCOMPLISHMENT. After my back surgery at the start of my senior year I was just thankful I could walk again without dragging my foot. After months of PT, I was able to return to throwing. Half way through the spring season my back just couldn’t handle it anymore and I had to step away. I did not want to experience another back surgery. Top on my list to accomplish my senior year was to throw again. I did exactly that and I feel very accomplished.

What are your plans for the sport in the future with your injury?
During my years in high school, I had dreamed of going to college and being a Track and Field athlete. It almost came true. I received several offers with athletic scholarships. I am not sure what my future is with throwing. I know I won’t be able to actually throw again. I do hope I can mentor young female athletes and share the knowledge I have learned. It cannot all be taught. It’s more of a feeling. For now, I am going to attend college and just see where I am led.

Share more about your upcoming London education through FSU. What made you decide to do this right away in college and what are you looking forward to most about it?
I applied to 25 colleges and universities. I was accepted into all of them but three. I was so excited to get into Florida State University. FSU has a program called the Pathways Program. Studying abroad is an option of the program and I picked London. I have never traveled abroad much less traveled by myself. After everything I had been through my senior year, I decided to take a leap of faith. Since I am from a small town, I am most excited to meet new people, eat new foods, and tour new places especially the Harry Potter Studios.

What else should we definitely know about you?

Nothing has ever come easy to me in school.
A simple memorization of counting by 5’s was a real task for me every day in the 1st grade.
When I was in the 3rd grade I was retained for an additional year and I was diagnosed with ADD and short-term memory issues.
Being retained made me question if I wasn’t as smart as the rest of the class.  I didn’t understand why I couldn’t learn just like everyone else.
All I have ever wanted to do is read something about any particular subject and actually remember it.
Sadly, this just isn’t the case for me.
I have had to work twice as hard as the average student because of my short-term memory deficiency.  This has taught me to work hard in everything I do.   I have learned to self-advocate for myself, ask more questions, and to be able to say "I do not know" and "I need help".
This is a life lesson many people have a hard time processing and I have become really good at it.
I have used this life lesson to continue to push myself every day.
I am proud to say I graduated in the top 20% of my class as the Class President, with a 4.2 GPA, a 4-year athletic scholar as well as a 4-year member of the marching band.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Serving others is very important to me. Throughout high school, I would help my local church and their mission group called Supper on Saturdays.  They distribute hot meals to our community on Saturdays. This experience has humbled me. We delivered not only meals but basic necessities. Many of the families we serve wait anxiously for 7-10 diapers to be distributed and that should last 2 days and they make them last until the following Saturday.  This is sadly a reality for some. My hope is along the way that I have inspired at least one little girl  to grow up and serve like I do because it comes with the greatest reward.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Acknowledgement for girls’ athletics especially at the middle school and high school levels, is something I am very passionate about. Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, the Dance Team, Flag Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swim, Tennis, Track and Field, Weightlifting, Volleyball and Twirlers count too. These teams deserve just as much recognition as the boys’ teams.  I live in the South and I am sure there are more sports to list. So many girls’ athletics get overlooked and or hardly recognized. How do we bring more attention to girls’ sports? By speaking up and raising awareness. I have been an athlete all my life and I am very proud of it.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Hands down the hardest thing was to score high enough on the ACT to receive the Florida Bright Futures Medallion Scholars award. I accomplished this with a lot of tutoring and multiple test taking.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up. Stay focused and BUSY. Ask yourself daily "what is my super power?"

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
That is a really good question. Honestly, I just don't know. In a few weeks or months after college starts, I am sure I will have a better answer. I am just thankful for today and looking forward to tomorrow.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
One of my favorite things to do is a good road trip. When my parents, brothers and I depart for an adventure this is when I am the happiest. I know we are going to have a blast just because we are all together. For the record, a trip to Buc-ees totally counts.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I am really good at singing but I chose playing the euphonium instead in the marching band in middle school and high school.

3 Things on your bucket list
Disneyland in California, NYC 911 Memorial, and parasailing.

Who do you find inspiring?
My Great Grandma Mary Margaret. I called her MM. She died at the age of 95. She was the 1st person, besides my parents, to hold me after I was born. She was a true matriarch. I hope I am half the woman she was some day.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
My hard work ethic. I have proven time and again my resilience for overcoming ADD and short-term memory deficiencies. I can self-advocate as well as set goals and I make them happen.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I have two of the most supportive great aunts that live nearby. They are alumni of FSU and I am proud to say I already bleed Garnet and Gold and GO 'NOLES!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would like to be interviewed about my faith. While I was living in Alabama, my mom would take us to a big building every Sunday. As a little girl, sitting still for over an hour hearing a man talk wasn’t the least bit interesting. As I grew up, I began to learn the importance of my presence in a place called church. I felt like I had another home. I felt beyond safe sitting there learning about His word and living life through it. I learned what prayer was and the importance of it. Although my prayers started out as, “God is good, God is great,” I’ve learned there is so much more to God and the goodness He brings. My life was almost perfect. God was my best friend and He would be the first one I came to if something was wrong. Then, my life in Alabama abruptly came to an end and everything I once knew left before I could even blink. I was hurt by the actions of my father, and my mom no longer saw a life for us there. As my emotions were all over the place and my heart was in pieces, not once did I look to God for help. I had felt betrayed by Him just like I had felt by my father. I lived my first year here in Florida without His guidance. Going to bed every night and waking up in the morning without a prayer became a habit. I was so angry with God that my faith was sealed shut and thrown away. I blamed God for everything wrong in my life and it was the pit of my self-destruction. I grew with hatred and lost sight of who I was. It wasn’t until recently I saw what I had become. I instantly became overwhelmed with grief and was ashamed of myself. I prayed for forgiveness and started a new habit of listening to podcasts from my church in Alabama. It’s so comforting to hear my pastor’s voice and I finally felt like I was back at home. My life feels lighter and my heart is filled with the grace of God. I live through His words and follow the path He has for me. God will always by my first home and He’s someone I am extremely blessed to have in my corner.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Recently, I was diagnosed with depression. As scary as it may sound, I felt like a weight had been lifted off of me after finally hearing my diagnosis. I was such a happy girl and all of a sudden everything changed. Almost no one noticed that something was wrong with me. I fought with myself on the acceptance that I was not okay. I was so scared that something was wrong with me and everyone would treat me differently. I attempted to change the things that I once loved about myself. I was known as the girl who had the smile to light up a room, when behind that smile, was the pain of feeling like a disappointment in my family’s and God’s eyes, which truly diminished my spirit. Now, I shine in many different ways, ways that I am beyond proud of. I am happy to say that the smile that is on my face now has seen the good and bad that life brings, and still manages to bring warmth to those who need it most.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? I am so passionate when it comes to checking on others. I’ve always been the person to put others before myself, and although their lives changed for the better, I felt like I was falling deeper into a depressive state. Years later a few people showed me how loved I was and helped me see why I couldn’t just leave this life behind. I struggled (and still struggle) with coping mechanisms to help better my life and the happiness I strive for in life. It still blows my mind how powerful words truly are. Negative words beat me down at a young age, and put me in a state that no child should ever go through. It wasn’t until recently that I was shown the other side of words, the positive side. These positive words and kindness that the almost angelic souls have brought me, saved my life. I agree with the fact that I am no longer the same girl that I was even a year ago. There are some parts that I am still working on, such as my faith, but I am beyond proud of the girl that is writing this story. The old me would have been kept to the side, afraid to take advantage of opportunities such as this one. I never would’ve had the strength to finally tell my story and reveal the parts of my story that most have yet to hear.

Tell us about your cheer career from start to where you are now.
I started cheering in middle school and it was different than what I was used to. I was always shy and timid, and cheer obviously requires you to yell, so I struggled in that department to say the least. Being the only Mexican was definitely a challenge. My school was majority white and I felt like a waste of breath, because who would want to pay attention to the Mexican, when there were pretty blondes? I then went on with joy for the sport and could never dream of quitting something I now loved. My freshman cheer tryouts really pushed me to the limit. We had so much running to do before we could begin anything related to cheer. After the grueling tryouts I made the team and was so excited for high school. My excitement quickly came to an end when practices rolled around. We heavily ran and exercised, took a small break and went on to being drilled on stunts. All of the exercise we did drained me and holding a person up in the air was not something easy for my body to handle. I dreaded going to the practices and my heart was not in it anymore. The exercising took away all the joy and spirit cheer is, and instead, turned it into something I would learn to hate. I made strong friendships through cheer, which was the only reason I kept going. After I moved during the summer before my 10th grade year it was too late to sign up for cheer and I loved the idea of taking a break, especially since I was going to a new school. As much as I loved the student section, I wanted to be down on the sidelines so badly. When tryouts came around I was very skeptical, but I knew I would regret it if I hadn’t gone for it. I was so scared to look if I had made it, and I saw that I made varsity captain and my heart dropped. I was in complete shock and fear quickly overwhelmed my body because I knew the returners would not be happy. As the year went on I noticed how different the dynamic was from this team compared to my old one. I regained my love for the sport, and my teammates made it all the better. I adored reading to elementary schools and the little traditions my school has carried. I am so happy that I found the love for cheer that I once had.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from cheer?
At my old school, we would go to a week-long cheer camp, learn material, and compete. Cheer camp was something I absolutely loved going to, and a little sad my current school doesn’t do it. We stayed on campus, walked everywhere, finished late, and woke up early. It was a little bit of a hassle, but it was all worth it in the end. Then, the last day came and it was time to compete. I was so nervous especially since it was my first time, and I didn’t want to be the girl who ruined it for everyone else. We hit everything, but everyone was still nervous for awards, since there were some amazing teams we were up against. We ended up winning 1st in every category, except for one which we got 2nd in. The feeling of hearing our name called for 1st place was amazing, especially since it was back to back. That day is something I will never forget, nor will I forget how deserving we were due to all of the hard work we put into every single detail.

What do your duties as VP of your local NHS entail? What do you love most about it?
I recently got appointed Vice President for NHS, and it honestly slapped me in my face. NHS was one of the only clubs I went to all of the meetings for and participated in. I loved being a part of it and I knew it would look really good for colleges. When I got the letter that I was chosen for Vice President I was in shock. This was such a big deal for me and I was so honored to have that title. I couldn’t begin to share my excitement and gratitude to the sponsor. For next school year I will be in charge of setting dates of meetings, volunteer services, calling businesses, double checking important dates, carrying the responsibilities of the President in her absence, and so much more. I am so excited to take on this responsibility and everything this title brings.

Share with us why you chose Candid Captures by Lexi to do your photos and what you love most about photoshoot/s with her.
I saw a photoshoot she had done on my Instagram, and I absolutely loved her work. I stalked her page and saw that she was looking for models for her senior team and I quickly signed up. I loved the fact that she was a teenager and was so passionate about her work. I wanted to book a photoshoot with her as soon as possible. I set up a senior photoshoot for my boyfriend and she considered all of my ideas and came out with exactly what I envisioned. We also threw in a few pictures of myself and some of my boyfriend and I. I was nervous on the way to the photoshoot because I really haven’t done one. She calmed all of my nerves gave me great comfort. I was by my phone for hours waiting for her to upload them. When she sent me the link, I could not believe how dreamy, romantic, and playful each photo was. The absolute talent that poured out of every single photograph was undeniable and she shined a light on the parts of my relationship that I cherish. She made me see myself in a way I never have, and I will always be thankful for her. She became someone I would consider my best friend. She has done so much for me, and created so many opportunities in the little time we’ve known each other. Lexi Valdez is a light that not everyone has the honor of sharing, but I am proud to say that I have.

Photography by Lucas Loman
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madison Hamway is a dedicated, self-driven respectful teen in honor classes in sunny Florida. Madison loves animals, friends, and family. When she is not in school, she is playing volleyball on a travel team where she competes in her home State. She also spends weekends and free time modeling for brand apparel and high fashion photography shoots where she travels the state. Madison is a published model in several worldwide fashion magazines. Madison is hoping to pursue a career in the acting entertainment industry or become self-employed running her own business one day. She cherishes her family and friends and absolutely adores her grandparents.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
Modeling and Volleyball and my future plans.

Tell us about your modeling career.
I have always had an interest in modeling.  One day my grandfather made a comment about my unique look and that I should pursue modeling.  That is all I needed to kick start my journey into modeling.  Thank you, grandpa, for inspiring me.

What has been the most challenging thing about modeling and how did you overcome it or how do you get past it?
Feeling emotions while posing is most challenging for me.  I try to put myself in a situation in my head that will provoke my emotion body language and facial emotion.

What led you into volleyball and what is a favorite accomplishment in the sport?
I always admired the sport and wanted to try it.  My most favorite accomplishment is making the travel team.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Be kind to everyone as you don’t know what struggles they are going through. Bullying is not cool at any age and those who were bullied, the memories last a lifetime and bullies could have crushed someone's dreams. It doesn’t take much to be kind and makes a huge difference that maybe silent but noticed for a lifetime.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself in college and traveling outside Florida in 5 years.

Nomination by Lorraine Dickinson

Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Picture
Nomination: I am nominating Faith Lynn Dickinson for inspiring teen because of the tragedies she has overcome in the last four years. Faith lost her big sister, Katarina, four years ago in a tragic car accident & in the last year several close family pets. Despite everything she’s been through, Faith has persevered and is enrolled in advanced classes at school with a 4.0 GPA, is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, and is a starter on her school's Varsity Volleyball and Basketball Teams. Faith also takes 6 dance classes several days a week. Faith is following in her sister’s footsteps.

How did you get into modeling and acting & what do you love about it?
When I was younger, and my sister was alive she was a model and actress. I went on all her castings and the photo shoots and always admired what she did. She got to meet so many people and wear different fashion from so many designers.
I love modeling and acting because you get to meet so many different types of people, you get to travel, and you get to wear all kinds of clothing. Keeps you very busy.

What was the scariest moment and acting and how did you get past it?
During pre-production in a film called Cat6, I have to crawl on my hands and knees through a small hallway in a motel with strobe lights flashing. I couldn’t see anything and had to pretend someone was chasing me and holding me. I just put myself in the character’s shoes & connected by being really scared in crowds to go super-fast to get this thing over with.

What is your favorite model memory?
In the Fashion and Art show Scene to Be Seen, I got to be a living model on a pedestal while hundreds of people walked around and watched me model a wearable art by Turk and Turk called “Play Ball”. It was so much fun. I loved interacting with all the people who came to see us.

What do you love most about school?
I go to an all-sports school call Sky Academy, so I would have to say all the sport activities I get to participate in - but I also love my Soar language arts class. I love to write stories from my heart.
What do you hope to study if you don’t stay with acting and modeling?
As of now only being in 7th grade I hope to accomplish graduating with an associate degree while going to a collegiate high school. Then maybe pursuing a career in the orthodontics field. I love children and the flexibility of being an orthodontist.

What was the hardest thing you ever had to accomplish and how did you go about doing it?
Going on and supporting family members after my sister passed in a car accident. I know I want her to be proud of me and she would want me to be happy. So, I get up every day and do my best to accomplish goals I set for myself. I keep my Faith in God knowing I will see her again. Pain never goes away, but you learn to manage it with good friends and family support.

What’s your favorite past time that was not in your nomination?
I love to play volleyball, basketball and I take six day of classes a week. I love any sport but I also love being a traveling mermaid.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Swimming with the sharks, taking a trip to Paris to see all the sites and fashions, going to Hawaii to learn to surf.

Kadance Fredericksen

Picture

Kadance Fredericksen - Florida
Nomination by Amy R Miller
Photography by Meghan Basford Portrait Studio
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kadance chose to make lemonade out the lemons life handed her. Kadance was abused, neglected and often homeless in her early years. Kadance was then removed from the home by her biological father and stepmother who later formally adopted her. Kadance now spends her time between her lemonade stand, seriously, where she has raised over $25,000 for the Ronald McDonald House and her organization, Kada's Promise. Kadance, through Kada's Promise, brings hope and comfort to kids still living in dire situations by providing teddy bears and blankets to crisis centers, trauma centers, abuse shelters and counseling centers.

What do you want us to know about your story?
As a little girl I was abused and neglected by my biological mother and stepfather. We were also homeless, moving from house to house, never staying in one place for too long. During this time, my only friend was my stuffed horse that I got for my birthday one year. That horse was something for me to hug and hold whenever I needed it.

Tell us more about Kada's promise and the mission. How did your story develop it?
Kada's Promise is a nonprofit organization that I started to give kids who are going through what I once went through comfort and support by providing hope through a teddy bear and blanket. I started Kada's Promise because I believe no one should ever have to go through the things that I went through and is a way for me to say that I have overcome my past. I want to help others do the same.

Picture
Photography by Meghan Basford Photography

Did Covid-19 alter your mission and if so, how did you overcome the obstacles of the pandemic?
Covid-19 did not alter my mission. Sadly, it only provided us with more kids who need these teddy bears. Covid-19 has left so many kids stuck at home with nowhere to go. More kids are being abused and neglected. School is often a safe place for many of these kids, and because of Covid-19, they have nowhere to feel safe.

What goals do you have for Kada's promise for 2021?
For 2021 my goal is to bring comfort to as many suffering children as I can. More than just in the state of Florida. I would like to extend Kada's promise across the United States.

Tell us about your route in Entrepreneurship in Photography.
In 2018 I picked up my first camera! My grandmother asked me to help her take some business photos at a couple weddings for her as she was working as an officiant. From there I started shooting and realized I had a talent. I started an Instagram and began investing in my skill as well as local marketing from business cards, flyers, social media posts, and a website!  I had countless amounts of troubles from age and gender discrimination to local competition. But none of that stopped me! Just 4 quick years later I now have a full business shooting photos from north Georgia to south Florida for everyone from senior models to couples to newborns! With the help of close friends and family I was able to build a brand, soon to be an empire, for myself that I will forever carry on. Candid Captures is a huge part of me and what I stand for as a 16-year-old Hispanic woman entrepreneur and through my work I hope to inspire tons!

What charity and service projects have you liked best and what were your specific roles in them?
The list of my charity projects goes on and on from Toys for Tots to Holiday Pics in Paradise, which tops the cake for me! Holiday Pics in Paradise was an open event I held in the Florida Keys where I set up a shooting space for local families to get all dressed up and have a chance to get free family holiday photos! We had treats for pets, gifts for the kids, and even hot cocoa! On the first day of the event, I shot over 12 families! For all my events I am always the coordinator. So, I plan, coordinate, and am always super hands on in every aspect of the project!

Share with us your path of Christianity and why it's so important to you.
I was raised in a very religious household and have always loved the ideals of being a good Christian woman. There is no greater gift that we have been given than to share! Which is why I love His Word alongside charity! Faith and Christianity have been an anchor and a gift for me. During the pandemic and during building my business and truly during any time I was I need I reached for my faith. Since I was a little girl everything about Our God touched my heart. Now I am a part of an amazing church and have taken the time to read into my faith and share what I know. During the pandemic I held an all girls 6 week zoom course regarding women in the bible and got to teach amazing girls my age about how He loves us and how when it comes to God, He leaves no stone unturned, no story unheard, and no heart untouched!

Bella Whitby

Picture

Bella Whitby - Florida
Nomination and Photography by AT Dance Art
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Bella Whitby is not only an extraordinary ballet dancer, but she is also an upstanding example of good citizenship, strong work ethics, academic excellence, and a kind heart. I believe Bella is an inspiring teen because she has shown an astounding strength over this last year of global pandemic challenges. Bella’s goal of becoming a professional ballet dancer was greatly thwarted when the arts were affected by lock downs, and that didn’t stop her from overcoming obstacles to continue her daily training. Zoom is great, but advanced level classical ballet in one’s kitchen is less than optimal. Bella somehow made it work and excelled.

I was fortunate enough to photograph Bella before the pandemic began, and this past October, and I was astounded by her growth as an artist, and in her technical skills in October. I expected to see setbacks, or limited development in her ballet skills due to the obvious limitations of 2020, but I was very wrong! I believe my thought was “she’s an entirely different dancer!” Bella is also a multifaceted artist, and plays the guitar, and as well creates stunning visual art. During the most difficult year for the ballet world, Bella didn’t give up on herself, and continued to inspire her peers. Bella is a beautiful person, inside and out, and never flaunts her achievements or treats others as if they’re beneath her. I believe Bella’s warmth and kindness are equal to her dance and academic skills, and that she should be honored in every way possible, as a shining example to us all.

Walk us through your dance journey. When did you start right up to what do you study now & what is a typical dance week like for you?

I began dancing at 3 years old in Maryland, where I lived until I was about 12. I always did Nutcracker every year, and took technique classes every week, but I never considered perusing dance as a career. It wasn’t until I started training with Servy Gallardo at the St. Pete Ballet Conservatory that my passion for dance really grew and I felt my confidence in my dancing and myself improve rapidly.
Now, I’m in the pre-professional program, planning for a future in dance and loving it more and more each day. During a typical dance week, we have technique and pointe class in the morning, then we rehearse pieces for our show in the afternoon. After rehearsals, I spend the evening working on school.

What is a favorite dance memory and/or accomplishment?
I have so many amazing memories at dance, but I always have great memories from every show we get to perform. Some of my favorite moments happen while performing on stage, and also backstage with my friends. It’s an awesome feeling to be able to do something I love with the people that I’m closest to.

What do you love most about dance?
I love being able to express myself and how I’m feeling through dance. If I’m feeling down, or having a bad day, dance always takes my mind off of it and makes me feel better.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I am in the pre-professional program at my studio, so I balance ballet during the day and then school online in the evenings.

What does this mean for you and your future in dance?
Being a part of the pre-professional program is a great preparation for a professional career in dance because it’s very close to how life in a company would be. I really love being able to spend the day at the studio rather than just a few hours after school. It makes a huge difference having extra time there.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
One of the hardest things to accomplish for me was getting through quarantine. It was very difficult not seeing my friends and family or dancing in the studio. Doing our ballet classes over Zoom was one thing that really helped me during that time.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say that hard work and perseverance can help you achieve just about any dream you have. If you really want something, just stick with it and don’t be too hard on yourself.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, my dream would be to dance for a ballet company, and to be finishing my bachelor’s degree.

Picture
Photography by family

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?

I love art, and I enjoy painting and drawing in my free time. I also love baking and watching Jeopardy.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I don’t know if it’s a hidden talent, but I love playing the guitar and learning new songs.

3 Things on your bucket list
Go to France, because I have been learning French for a few years, and learn how to play the piano.

Who do you find inspiring?
There are a lot of people who inspire me, but one person in particular would be my ballet teacher and artistic director of our studio, Servy Gallardo. He has so much passion for dance and for all his students.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that my work ethic and kindness could inspire others.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am extremely grateful for this opportunity!

Claudia Harry

Claudia Harry – Florida
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Todd Harry
Photography by Gissela Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Claudia Harry is a smart, sweet, and kind young woman. A strong Christian that is always trying to help those around her. She has a beautiful heart and a strong will. She thrives at school and cheerleading. She works hard on all her goals. She loves to travel and spend time with her friends.
PicturePhotography by Gissela Photography

Tell us about your cheerleading career. When did you start, what is your team like, and what do you love most about it?
My career started in 6th grade when I joined an all star team. My freshman year I made the JV team at Fleming and our team was 6th in the nation. I am in my 2nd year. This year’s team is a good group who all have a special place in their heart for cheer and I’m lucky to have them. I love everything about cheer, but with Fleming we are not only a team, but a family. I’ve grown as a person and cheerleader in only two years. Fleming Island Cheer will always have a place in my heart.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
My favorite memory from cheer would have to be my first pep rally as a cheerleader. All schools have pep rallies and most students get to enjoy them from the stands but I had the opportunity to enjoy it from the mat supporting my school. I loved being involved in the activities and chants we led the students through, and being able to perform for my school.

Why is your faith so important to you and how has it helped you stay strong in hardships?
My faith is important to me because being a Christian is more than knowing the bible and going to heaven. Being a Christian gives me a relationship with God, who sent his son to die for us and now we can be free in Him who gives strength and hope. I think one of the most important things when going through life with my faith is that I know I find my identity in Christ, not others opinions or the mistakes I make. Staying in prayer, reading his word, and knowing everything happens because of God’s plan keeps me going in life.

What do you think is the biggest struggle for you and your friends right now and how are you helping everyone overcome it?
I think some of the biggest struggles for my friends and I right now are things like stress from school, family problems, and relationships. I’m trying to help people overcome these struggles by being someone that they can always go to and trust with anything. I think gaining people’s trust as well as letting them know they’re not alone is important. I try to remember that God is in control but that we also don’t need to carry our burdens alone. We have not only Him to lean on, but our friends too. Staying positive and communicating with each other helps.

We know it's been tough to travel this year, but where is your favorite place you've traveled to so far and where do you want to travel to next? Tell us a little about each.
My favorite place I’ve traveled was our trip to Europe. We got to go to four countries and see so many different cultures and beautiful views. We visited London, Paris, Greece, and Italy. It was like a dream, all the places were breathtaking. During this trip I learned so much and had fun with my family. The next place I want to travel to is Hawaii. Even though I did love Europe I am a big beach and summer person and Hawaii is such a beautiful tropical place so I would love to go there.

Three things on my bucket list are to travel to Hawaii, get into a good college, and win a national championship with my cheer team.

Someone I find inspiring would have to be my older sister Sofia. I am so lucky to have my sister in my life and I’m beyond grateful for our relationship. My sister is such a beautiful girl inside and out. We have been through so much in our lives with family issues, having our parents divorced at such a young age and all the obstacles we’ve had to go through has been hard but she is definitely someone who keeps us going and keeps both of us strong. I love how she is such a good friend and always loves to have fun. My sister has accomplished so much in her life and I have always looked up to her. She is in her first year of college right now working to be a nurse practitioner. She is a God loving and hard working person who inspires me everyday.

Nomination by Karen Kumnog

Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jordin Kumnog is an inspiration, not only to me but to everyone she meets. I believe that is the reason why she wants to be a nurse when she grows up. If you ask family and friends about Jordin the first thing that comes to mind is how big her heart is, and how her kindness is always consistent. Jordin is an Allstar Cheerleader, she has been cheering since the age of 5 years old. At the age of 9 she won her first Summit ring, which is a big deal in the Cheerleading world. She is also an Ambassador, Elite Model, and a Role Model for the brands she represents. She is a hardworking student in school where she maintains A, B honor roll. The most inspiring characteristic of Jordin, is her sheer will and determination to accomplish her goals.

How did cheerleading transform you into an outgoing person?
Cheerleading has transform me into an outgoing person because I use to be shy and didn't make friends easily. By becoming a cheerleader, I broke out of my shell. As a cheerleader, my talent of flying and tumbling was a skill that came so easy and I excel so fast. The girls and the boys on my teams and the love I have acquired for cheerleading help me be a a more outgoing person. I thank all of my cheer teams that I have been on, my coaches for supporting me, and the countless hours of practices and competitions that cheerleading have made me such an outgoing person.

How are you a Role Model and what does it mean to you to know that so many people look up to you?
I am a Role Model for brands that I represent. I can say it feels awesome to know that someone looks up to me. I look to inspire other girls by believing in themselves through confidence, love kindness, and to be all that they can be, which is the best version of themselves!

Picture
Photography by Robert Rainbow Photography

Tell me why winning a Summit ring is such a big deal? What was the process like to get to win this?
Summit is a big deal because you work so hard to get to this place in competition. You want to show everyone the routine that made you get this far in this competition. And to win a Summit ring it is so amazing, and the excitement is so unreal. It is like winning the "Super Bowl of Football."

How did you get started volunteering with firemen? What do you do with them and what do you love so much about helping them?
I got started volunteering with firemen when I was 9 years old. It was Hurricane Irma in 2017 that was going to hit Florida. My Dad found out that the firemen was looking for volunteers to fill sandbags for people who need to protect their home from flooding. It was an honor to help the firemen, and knowing that I help my community in a time of need, was an amazing feeling. Making people feel that their property was safe was a great way of giving back to help in any way I can.

When did you realize that you wanted to be a nurse when you were older? Why do you want to become one?
I always wanted to be a nurse at an early age of 2 years old. My granddaddy was ill, and a nurse will come to our home every day to take care of him. I would sit at his feet and watch her. If I thought she was hurting him, I would cry and ask him is he okay? After the nurse left, I made sure he was comfortable with his pillows, covers, and help give his medicine. I knew I wanted to be a nurse then. I want to make sure when I become a nurse, that they are in great hands and to make them feel love and care.

Alexandra de Roos

Alexandra de Roos - Florida
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination & Photography by Shelli de Roos
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Alexandra de Roos is a 17-year-old student at the School of American Ballet in New York City, is the current Miss Gainesville’s Outstanding Teen 2020 and is the president and founder of Peace Love Leotards, Inc.
She began dancing at the age of 2 ½ and began competing in dance competitions at the age of 5. At the age of 8, she informally began Peace Love Leotards by collecting gently used dance wear at her local studio. At the age of 11, she began training at Next Generation Ballet to focus on ballet specifically for a career. She moved to New York City by herself when she was 14 to train at the School of American Ballet for its winter term program.
In March of 2020, when COVID-19 forced Alex to return to Florida and quarantine, she founded Peace Love Leotards, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation whose mission is to bridge the socioeconomic gap in the performing arts by donating dancewear and providing virtual training videos to underprivileged children. Since April, Peace Love Leotards has been featured in 12 newspapers across Florida, Pointe and Dance Spirit magazines and WFLA News Channel 8, it has garnered 7 dance wear manufacturer sponsors, 2 corporate donors and local dance retail partners. Peace Love Leotards is global as it now has 14 ambassadors and 2 junior ambassadors across the US and in Singapore who collect dancewear in their locations. Peace Love Leotards has provided and continues to provide dancewear to dancers in need, scholarship students at dance studios and is in the process of partnering with Title 1 schools across Florida.

“I believe that anyone who wants to dance should have the opportunity to, and my mission is to make that dream a reality for you.” - Alexandra de Roos

What inspired you to start dancing? Who are some dancers that you look up to?

I have been dancing for as long as I can remember. I was born with hip dysplasia and high arches in my feet which caused my doctors to be concerned that I would not walk. My doctors recommended that my parents put me in dance to strengthen my lower body. From there, I completely fell in love with the art form. Some dancers I look up to are Maria Kowroski, Teresa Reichlen, and Sterling Hyltin, all principal dancers with New York City Ballet.

Tell me everything you possibly can about your nonprofit Peace Love Leotards!
I started Peace Love Leotards Inc. when I was eight because I was inspired by my mentors in the Miss Florida Organization who advocated for something they were passionate about. I wanted to do the same. I immediately thought of dance as what I was most passionate about. I knew dance was expensive so I decided to help combat the costs by collecting dancewear to distribute to dancers who needed it. Fast during quarantine, I decided to officially incorporate Peace Love Leotards and obtain its tax-exempt status. Since April, we have gained sponsorships from 7 dancewear companies, 1 retail store, and 2 corporate sponsors, and have received $5,200 in dancewear and $2,500 in monetary donations. We have launched our ambassador programs, and have been published in Pointe and Dance Spirit Magazines, 12 newspapers, and appeared on WFLA News Channel 8. We are currently in the process of working with arts programs at Title 1 Schools and other dance studios.

What are some goals you have for your future? Do you want to continue dancing? What are your goals for your nonprofit?
Yes, I absolutely want to continue dancing. My main goal is to be asked to join the New York City Ballet! I also want to attend college and obtain my Doctorate in sports psychology. My main goal for my nonprofit is to be able to bridge the socioeconomic gap in the performing arts because I believe that any child who wants to dance should have the opportunity to.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Being accepted into the School of American Ballet’s Winter Term Program when I was 14 years old which meant I would move away from home 4 years earlier than the average student. To be accepted, I had put so much hard work and time into my training. I knew that lots of hard work would eventually pay off. Moving away so young was quite difficult, but I would say in order to be successful in you have to be confident in yourself and that you can accomplish what you set out to accomplish no matter the difficulty. If you don’t have enough confidence in yourself to know you can make it on your own, then you won’t make it. I had to know that I was smart enough to make my own decisions. For example, about 3 weeks after I moved away, I injured my back dancing. I had to know it was a smart decision to go see the PT and the doctor and to be confident enough in myself to know those were smart decisions.

How did you get the honor of becoming Gainesville's outstanding teen? What was going through your mind when you found out you were their most outstanding teen?
Miss Gainesville’s Outstanding Teen is a preliminary to the Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Competition. I competed for the title in February and was so blessed to win! When they called my name as the winner I was beyond ecstatic as this is something I had wanted to participate in for so long. I absolutely love the Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen organization and to be able to represent the wonderful city of Gainesville is a bonus.

What is your favorite part of being Miss Gainesville's Outstand Teen?
Perhaps my favorite part of being Miss Gainesville’s Outstanding Teen is being a mentor to my protege, Taylor Finne. This is so special to me because I have always loved working with younger girls and because this is the program that inspired me to start Peace Love Leotards. My protege is a dancer and is so kind and talented. I absolutely love her, and I love knowing that I have the opportunity to be able to make an impact on her life as my mentors impacted my life!

Picture

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Definitely believe in yourself and do not be afraid to go after what you want. Know that you are good enough to get to where you want to go, and if you have to, push yourself out of your comfort zone to accomplish your goals. To get connections and sponsorships for Peace Love Leotards, I had to reach out to people that I did not know, adults, established in their respective businesses. It was scary and outside my comfort zone especially because I’m not usually a bold person. But because I wanted to make Peace Love Leotards successful, I knew I had to be bold and go for it.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
A: I actually love photography and going to the beach. Taking photos of places and my friends is something that makes me so happy. I also love that I can capture special moments. As they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words. The beach has always been my favorite place. It is so relaxing and so beautiful. Plus, water activities are so much fun.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can wiggle my ears!

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about the importance of arts’ education because through the arts, a child’s creative thinking skills can improve as well as their STEM test scores. I have the opportunity to spread this message through Peace Love Leotards Inc. and as Miss Gainesville’s Outstanding Teen. Also, I currently am involved with Advanced Recovery System’s Real Talk Program, which is a comprehensive, educational program that teaches the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. I believe this topic is so important as the number of people addicted to these substances continues to rise every year and as teens, we are one of the most susceptible groups.

3 Things on your bucket list
The 3 main things on my bucket list are traveling to Europe, specifically Paris, dancing as a professional ballerina, and obtaining my Doctorate degree in psychology.

Picture

Who do you find inspiring?
Definitely my mom. She embodies everything I want to be in life. She is kind, talented, and hard-working. She is not afraid to accomplish her goals and go after what she wants. She has also taught me so many important lessons throughout my life, one of the most memorable would be her telling me that “I could be anything I wanted to be in life accept a mean girl.” This enforced in my head that I could accomplish anything that I wanted, but that I needed to be kind in the process. She is truly the most amazing person, and I love her so much.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I have always found this question so difficult to answer because it is hard to pinpoint what draws one person to another especially when that person is yourself. However, I believe that I am inspiring because I believe that in all that I have ever accomplished I have remained kind. Kindness will take you so far in life. It leaves a positive, lasting impact on people.

The Nomination: Magnolia Faith Rubinstein is an inspiring teen! She is a Christian first, and a dancer second. Magnolia just completed her 12th year of dance. She has moved many times in her young life, but dance has always been her home. Magnolia attends four classes weekly at 5 Star Dance Centre in Pace, Florida. Magnolia has Dyslexia and Dysgraphia but does not let that stop her from remaining on Honor Roll at Pace High School. Magnolia completed her Freshman year with a 4.2 weighted GPA. She is involved in many clubs at Pace High School including: First Priority, BETA, Anchor, Diamond Girls and Interact. Magnolia is a kind soul and sweet like her name!

When did you start dancing? Are there dancers who inspire you and who you look up to?
I started dancing in 2007 when I was 2 years old. I have been dancing for 13 years. As a toddler, I was too young to have a specific person be my inspiration for wanting to dance. My mother enrolled me in a class, and I loved it. However, I have had many wonderful dance teachers throughout the years who have inspired me to work hard and grow as a dancer.

What is your favorite memory from dance?
My favorite memories from dance are always made at the end of the year recital. We work all year for one section of time, and we have one chance to make it perfect. It feels amazing after a show when everything goes right, and I can celebrate with my 5 Star Dance Centre family.

Can you tell me more about Dyslexia and Dysgraphia? What would you like to share about it and how does it impact your life?
Dyslexia and Dysgraphia are unique to those that have it. Statistically, one in five people have some form of Dyslexia. Dyslexia affects the ability to spell and read. While Dysgraphia affects handwriting and motor skills. I have a hard time getting my thoughts written out in a way that is not only spelled correctly but makes sense to others. I am thankful for all the accommodations and help that I have been given for me to be successful in school. Having a learning disability has made me stronger in other areas such as dance and art.

How have you overcome Dyslexia and Dysgraphia and who has helped you to overcome them?
After my diagnosis in 2nd grade, I had a Dyslexia tutor for four years. My school provides me with accommodations that are specific to my educational needs. I have been able to stay on Honor Roll with hard work and the support of my teachers and family. I ended my Freshman Year with a 4.2 weighted GPA. Dyslexia and Dysgraphia is not something you necessarily overcome. I feel that discussing my experiences with others has not only helped me but brought much needed awareness.

What are some goals you have for your future? Do you hope to continue with dance?
My goal is to graduate high school with honors and get accepted into a college-level dance team. I would like to dance for as long as possible.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Another favorite hobby of mine is reading. My book collection is ever-growing.
