What should we know about you?

I am very passionate about mentorship and teaching. I strive to honor the memory of my late music teacher by teaching others through private music lessons and being Head Drum Major in my high school band. I also mentor people through sharing my testimony in the book “I AM”, in which I am a co-author of in conjunction with my school’s leadership team. In this novel I share my fight with sickness due to anxiety and how my faith healed me. I hope to become an English teacher in the future to feed my love for teaching.

Tell us about your music - what got you interested and why did you choose the oboe?
As a young musician, my parents were in debt and unable to pay for my music lessons. At twelve years old I worked around the town to save up lesson money. I started taking lessons with Bob Burks and instantly had a connection with him. After my private teacher told me I had the potential to continue professionally, I started working very hard. Now I’m absolutely in love with the instrument! I take every chance I can to play.

What does it mean to be the first-chair oboist for all four years in the state of Georgia's All-State Orchestra? What opportunities has this provided you?
The All-State Band and Orchestra clinic is a selective event held every year in Athens, Georgia. Students must audition to be accepted into this program. It’s very prestigious— on average a high school has one student make All-State every four years. Attending every year has been an honor; the musical experience is unparalleled, and the friends I have made are lifelong ones.

What does a Drum Major do and why is this a prestigious position?
A Drum Major is the conductor of a marching band– during halftime they direct the band’s halftime show from a podium. Being a Drum Major has been one of the most demanding and rewarding positions. It requires lots of confidence, precision, and energy. As a drum major, it is your responsibility to train with the other drum majors and look exactly alike, communicate information between the staff and the band members, and be a leader during hardship. I’m very lucky to have worked with amazing co-drum majors and a wonderful band; they made my job easy!

What is your favorite type of music to play and why?
I love playing music from the Romantic Period (1825-1900). There are some amazing (and occasionally daunting!) oboe solos in that period of repertoire.

What have you learned about yourself while teaching others to play?
It is always a good reminder for me musically to teach others basics about the oboe. In a way, I fall in love with the instrument again by seeing others fall in love with it for the first time. My favorite aspect of teaching is seeing something click with students. When they can implement a new concept right away, I get so excited!

Why did you choose Michelle Petteys as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Simply put, Mrs. Petteys is one-of-a-kind. She makes everyone feel like themselves in their pictures and is willing to try anything to achieve the look you want. I have taken pictures with her twice and each time I have finished feeling beautiful and relaxed. Mrs. Petteys is also a superb Spanish teacher at my high school! Her dedication to photography and teaching is inspiring.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I took part in the renaming of my school’s hallways: an effort that diversified the representation of US generals. Within school, I am on the leadership team for NHS and am part of Beta Club, NEHS, and Culture Club. I have received awards for my poetry and speech submissions to local writing competitions. I am an alumni of the Chattanooga Youth Symphony and the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program.

What made you want to take such a big initiative to rename the hallways and what did this entail?
Renaming my school’s hallways was heavy on my heart when racial injustice was at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Our hallways were named after famous military generals– however there was no diversity, and some men featured were generals of the Confederate army. I emailed my principal and asked that he consider changing our hallway names. He responded saying that he was already planning on doing so and that other members of the community had also reached out urging for the same thing. We now have hallways that represent men and women of all cultures and nationalities.

What do you do on the leadership team for NHS?
The NHS leadership team is responsible for putting together monthly meetings and organizing projects for members. My favorite project this year has been making Valentine’s Day cards and delivering them to our local police stations, firefighters, teachers, and medical workers. We got lots of positive feedback!

What are your strongest leadership skills?
I am thankful that I stick to my decisions as a leader. I take confidence in the moves I make and trust myself that they will benefit people, even if they don’t see it. Especially as a Drum Major, it is important to make a decision and not be swayed by people’s opinions. I am grateful for the leaders and staff that supported me in making those decisions and guided my thinking.

What do you do in Beta Club and what is a favorite accomplishment?
Beta Club is another service club. My favorite projects in Beta Club have been helping local families when they are in need because of crises. Multiple times, The Beta Club has collected thousands of dollars in gift cards to support our community.

What are some of your favorite high school memories?
Some of my favorite activities have been painting my senior parking spot and traveling to football games with the band. A specific favorite memory was playing our halftime show in heavy rain during band camp– we were soaked from head to toe, but it was so fun!

Tell us more about Culture Club.
Culture Club was founded by one of my friends when she was a freshman. It is all about highlighting different cultures and informing the student body about them. Every month a different culture is featured, and the members create a visual to put in the hallways about that culture!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Confidence and being a pioneer. Because of the small town I live in, moving far away and competing against musicians with more resources felt intimidating at first. But I persevered and was given the opportunity to audition at some of the most elite music schools in the nation. Don’t be afraid to be first-- show others that this journey is possible and empower them to pioneer their own story. The struggles, waiting periods, and ultimately blessings that have come my way have shown me that motivating others to continue on the road less traveled is a story worth telling.

What do you enjoy writing about?
Writing is an emotional outlet for me, so I usually write about my worries. I’ve written about college, mental health, and the stresses of modern life.

Share with us more about the book you are co-authoring. How did it come about, what is it about, and what do you hope others will gain from reading it?
This book was the brainchild of the Heritage football coach and leadership teacher. He wanted to create something that could encourage young people to make the right decisions in a world that supports wrong ones while also sharing real stories and testimonies from people who have gone through very difficult things. I believe if this book can change one person’s life, all of our work will have paid off. “I AM” is available now on Amazon– all proceeds go to our sister school in Nicaragua!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

Playing oboe at my late teacher’s funeral was heart-wrenching. I got through it because I knew it would make him proud if I played with confidence.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Remember that your worth is not based on your productivity or performance.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to teach English at the middle or high school level and continue playing oboe.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Reading!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I wish I did! Maybe it’s yet to be discovered…

3 Things on your bucket list
-See the Northern Lights
-Travel to Greece
-Go see a gameshow live

Who do you find inspiring?
My parents are the most inspiring to me. They have taught me so much about being positive in hardship and the strength of love.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I have a unique story– I hope that my unconventional circumstances and my perseverance is inspiring to others.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I’m so thankful for this opportunity!

Mariam Fawaz – Michigan
Nomination by Ahmad Fawaz
Photography by Mariam's mother & friends
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Mariam Fawaz is 16-year-old girl from Dearborn Heights Michigan. In February 2021 she attempted to start a Model United Nations club at her school, she had done everything but by November 2021 she had asked over 25+ teachers to be an advisor however was rejected from each one and wasn’t discouraged but inspired she had met with the mayor of Dearborn Heights and then created a 2 citywide MUN club that is competing at the largest conference in the Midwest its first year as a club, she made sure financially every student who wanted to had the opportunity.

Picture
Tell us more about Model United Nations Club. What is it and why did you want to start one at your school so bad?
Model UN is an educational simulation and academic activity where students simulate the bodies of the United Nations. If you’re familiar with the United Nations, as a Model UN member you would step into the roles of these delegates and represent countries from all over the world and work together to find resolutions to real global issues as the United Nations would.
I wanted to start it first because I wanted to bring this fun educational activity to our community when it was not yet introduced. The more obstacles I ran into and was told I cannot, the more I wanted it to be a success.

What do you do when you compete at conferences?
Every delegate is given a country to represent and a committee with certain topics to debate. You would then work with other delegates to find a resolution to one of the real global issues you’d be debating.

How did you get the mayor to help you when none of your teachers would?
I contacted the mayor of my city (Mayor Bill Bazzi of Dearborn heights) and presented my idea and asked for his help. Our mayor is very involved in the youth of our community and was a huge help in making this and even was involved, whether it was being a guest speaker at one of our meetings or helping with transportation to our conference.

How did you then get other teens to join from your school and others?

I spread the word through social media, I and the other founders created flyers to send to every principal in our community as well as sent to all club's Instagram pages to spread the word.

What did you learn about yourself in this process?
I learned that as teenagers when an adult says we can’t do something, we believe that we can’t do it. In this process I learned that’s not always the case and that with the right determination we can make that change and make that impact regardless of age.

What leadership skill would you say is your top one in completing this endeavor?
Determination, I believe my determination was the most effective skill in creating this. With all the obstacles we faced in starting this without my determination for it to be a success I don’t think we would have been as successful.

Picture
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Once I started this club it not only got all different students involved and they've gotten comfortable with us and became a space where minds can grow, this the club has inspired others to start their clubs and be more involved. I think the most inspiring part about it, all is that I didn't start high school as this a person who is involved in school and the community but I became it, which most people believe that however, you start high school is who you will be for the rest of your life.

What is your favorite thing to debate and why?
One of my favorite topics to debate is the real genocides that our world faces. In the middle east and Africa, genocide is a constant issue. For example, the invasion of the people of Palestine. Or the bombings in Syria, or Yemen is experiencing the world's worst food security crisis. These are real-world problems being affected by many every day but are rarely talked about therefore I love when I get the opportunity to debate about them and speak about these real global issues.

What volunteer work do you do, and which is your favorite?
I volunteer throughout my community with school events, Community Food Drives, and Local campaigns. My favorite would be volunteering with the Eternal Light Organization. In our community, a man named Sam Bazzi decided to give back and start the organization. In which they put together boxes of food and groceries and hold food drives as often as they can. Anyone in need may just drive up and no questions asked, no paper to fill out, if you need food you can get just that and I just believe that to be such a great thing to be a part of.

What is student congress and what is your role in it?
In student congress, we have our elected students like President, Vice President, secretary, etc. Student congress is where all the students in the club vote and plan events and fundraising for our school. In this club, I hold the position of a delegate.

What subjects do you tutor and who do you tutor?
I mentor my peers and help them create a plan for college. I also tutor younger students in elementary or middle school in all subjects but particularly focused on language arts and literature.

What do you love best about investment club?
I love that I have the opportunity to learn about investments and stocks. This is very beneficial in the real world but not taught often enough so I’m glad I can.

Picture
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I believe it would be mental health and the different ways we can improve in society by bettering our and others' mental health.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I believe one of my largest hardships is dealing with anxiety. When I had gotten my first anxiety attack, I had felt my breathing continuously getting harder. I didn’t know why I was feeling this way but the way I got over it was by surrounding myself with people who calm that anxiety and give me the support I need.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t try to be liked by all, and don’t let anyone's title hold rank over you. Focus on your goal and don’t let others stop you.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years in the future, I see myself having an education. I will have gotten a college degree from a top university but I will also be working on my next mark in the world. I will be constantly working on ways I can make bigger impacts in not only my community and society but in the world.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Writing, when the reality of the world becomes almost unbearable I like to take out my laptop and start writing and feel the characters I’m writing, become them, and escape from reality in that writing.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
When I was ten, I started learning to play the viola, it’s been a hidden talent of mine for quite some time now.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Speak in front of the actual UN about pressing global issues.
2. Win a Nobel Peace Prize
3. Be the woman that inspires younger generations to not let the world stop them.

 Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person to me would have to be my older sister, Nena, at 18 years old. She ran for county commissioner although she didn’t win and despite all other opinions, she won 40% of the votes and then proceeded to start her very own title company. Most importantly she’s been my biggest inspiration as a big sister, as a person. Nena never let anyone stop her from becoming the extraordinary woman she is. She is a successful human being not just in accomplishments but as a person she hasn’t let anyone make her cruel or cold-hearted but a better person. She is proof that the hate you get can only affect you if you let it, something I often fail to believe. She is the reason I have the determination and motivation that I do.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

I think my motivation is the most inspiring. That no matter who tried to stop me I didn’t let them, because of the determination that I had to bring this to our community.

Cameron Sony – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Angela Williams Photography
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Cameron Sony is so inspiring to me and to her peers at school. She is the captain of the cheer team and was voted homecoming queen this year. She is in multiple clubs, she works a job and still has a 3.9 GPA. She is beautiful inside and out! I just love her and I would love to nominate her for Inspiring Teens Magazine.

What should we definitely know about you?
I moved here (Ringgold, GA) right before high school from Ohio. I’ve come a long way but I love everyone I've met and the community I am in. I have opened up my shell a ton and I've started to become more comfortable putting myself out there. I am a cheerleader at my high school and I got cheer captain. I also got nominated for homecoming queen which took me way by surprise. I cried so many times. I love Angela, my photographer and how comfortable she makes me feel and how she helped me express myself in my photos. I have a big heart and would do almost anything for anyone. I am so blessed to even be considered for this magazine and I don’t want to take any of it for granted.

Tell us about your cheer career. How did you get started, how many years have you cheered and what do you love most about it?
I was a cheerleader at my old school in Ohio, but there our school did not have insurance so we could not stunt or tumble, we just cheered on the sidelines for football games. When I moved here to Ringgold, GA I was so excited to try out but when I got there, I was very intimidated because I realized these girls did crazy flips and stunts I have never done before. I was lucky enough to have made the team that first year and my coach tried to get me to fly, but I was not very good at it. She told me she saw potential in me though and started having me base. I have been a base ever since and have learned many new tumbling skills that I used to grow up wishing I could do. The thing I love the most about cheer is probably the trust and love we have for each other. It is a crazy thing to trust some girls to throw you in the air while you spin or flip and hope they catch you, and as the base, hope the flyer does not kick you in the face. I have grown so close to my teammates and trust them so much and they are a family to me that I will never forget.

What is a favorite accomplishment from cheer?
Overall when it comes to cheer and my team's accomplishments I am very proud of us for having an undefeated regular season all four years I have been there. For me personally though, I feel so accomplished to be their captain. I love my team and I love that they can trust me and listen to me without taking it as I am bossing them around. We all learn from each other and take each other's advice. Honestly every girl on the team could be our captain and do an exceptional job at it. We all work so hard.

What do you love about your cheer team and what is a favorite memory with them?
My cheer team has such a weird and goofy sense of humor. We have so many inside jokes with each other that nobody else would be able to understand. We could have the hardest practice ever and literally be kicking each other in the face and landing on each other and still have a laugh together. If our team did not have the chemistry, it has we would not be nearly as good as we are. I am so thankful for all my teammates and where we all have come from. My favorite memory with them would probably have to be after I got nominated homecoming queen and they all ran towards me and gave me a huge group hug on the field. We were all crying and screaming, and they made me feel so loved and thankful for all of them. It is nice knowing you always have another family to go to that will always be there for you for your biggest accomplishments and hardest times.

Do you plan on cheering competitively after high school?
Honestly, probably not. I love cheerleading and I am so upset to have to part from it. For this new chapter in my life though I am going to start working more often while also going to college and going into nursing school. I feel as though having cheer on top of that is just going to bring more stress to my life and to my body. The college I am planning on going to as of now also does not have a cheer team. If I end up going to The Ohio State University though I will definitely think about it!

How did you meet Angela with Angela Williams Photography and why did you know she was definitely the one to take your senior pictures?

I knew seniors from the year before who had been using Angela for their pictures. I saw them and loved them, so I reached out to her about taking my prom pictures. She responded and told me she looked at my Instagram and was curious if I wanted to be a senior rep for her! I was so shocked and so excited but honestly kind of nervous. When I met Angela for my prom pictures that year that's when I knew for sure I wanted to be her representative. Angela is one of the most genuine and kind people I have ever met. She made me feel so safe and comfortable and I just love her so much. I could not imagine doing it with anyone else. I am so thankful for her.

What was the experience like leading up to the shoot and then the shoot and then seeing your pictures? Tell us all your happy thoughts!
Leading up the photoshoot it was just going to be a valentine’s photoshoot. Angela though had an amazing idea to bring my prom dress I never got to wear before I sold it. It is hot pink and would look perfect for a valentines shoot. I was so excited! I actually forgot to bring heels with the dress, so I had to do it barefoot and try to hide my feet in the photos. We were there for a long time, and it was freezing cold outside, but it was definitely worth it!! When I saw my pictures, they turned out better than I even expected they would. I loved them. When I found out I got featured Angela and I was so excited I could cry. It was amazing.

What will you miss most about high school?
There is a lot I will miss about high school. I have always loved getting to go to school and get outside of the house. I love getting to see all my friends and learn new things. I love the challenging parts of high school that really make me push myself. The thing I will miss the most though is leaving all my friends. I love everyone at our school, and we all get along so well, and it is always so much fun even in the stressful times. I am going to miss seeing everyone in class, in lunch, and at practice. I am going to miss that a lot.

What are you looking forward to most after high school?
After high school there are a lot of things I am going to miss but a lot of things I am going to look forward to as well. I am just excited to get my life started and meet new people and start somewhere new. It is going to be exciting going somewhere new and I am excited to start working towards getting into nursing school. I am also excited because I am planning on staying at home so I will still get to live with my parents and see my friends from high school.

Where would your friends say we'd find you and what would you be doing if you had no responsibilities for the day?
My friends would tell you I would be at home with my mom. Whenever I have no responsibilities or plans, I am so excited to just sit on the couch and watch shows and movies with my mom. My mom is my best friend, and I am closer with her than I am with most people. It is so relaxing and stress relieving when I know I can stay at home for the day with nothing to worry about with my mama.

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
If I could travel anywhere, it would probably be back to Ohio for a while so I could see my family and all of my old friends. I miss them so much and when I lived there my whole family would come over almost every weekend and we would have bonfires and just hang out. I am super close with my family and my cousins, and they are my favorite people. It is so sad that I never get to see them anymore so if I got the opportunity, I would take it.

This image was taken by life touch photos the day I got announced as homecoming queen!

Tell us about your homecoming court experience.

Homecoming was an unbelievable and unforgettable experience. I have watched previous years of homecoming come and go and would always imagine getting to walk out there in a princess dress and always dream to do that but never thought I would be able to. When the time came to vote for who got to be on the court, I thought about running but learned we were not allowed to campaign for it so I did not think I would have a chance. I mentioned it to some of my friends though and talked to them about how I wanted to do it. The next week I was sitting in class, and they went over the intercom and announced the five princesses on the court, and I was one of them! I was so shocked, and my class congratulated me. When I was walking out on the field that day, I was so blessed I even got the opportunity to do that, I was honestly not even thinking about the fact I could get queen. I do not think anyone ever really thinks they are going to get it. I was the last to walk out so when I got there everything happened so fast and they announced I won. The whole cheer team ran up to me surrounding me and all I could hear was the crowd cheering. I cried about 10 times that night. I will never forget that moment.

What was the hardest part of being a teen in covid-19?
The hardest part of being a teen during covid-19 is missing out on a whole year of high school. We were not going to school and I was trying to take calculus and chemistry online which was super difficult. On top of that I never got to see my friends and my cheer season got pushed back super far. We did not even get to have a homecoming dance that year. It was hard knowing if you were to go out and happen to get someone sick you could take their life. Nobody wanted to risk it. I could not drive for a while after my 16th birthday either because of covid and appointments being booked so far. You can really not just pick one thing when it comes to how covid has affected people. I am so glad it is starting to calm down even though it is still definitely an issue.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Angela pretty much covered most of it up for me! I moved here from Ohio right before high school and it was really hard at first as I faced some challenges and was struggling to fit in. I have learned to kill people with kindness over the years though and the best thing you can do is work hard and be yourself!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it?
I would talk about personality disorders or dreams. I find personality disorders so fascinating, especially dissociative personality disorders. I also love the idea of dreams and how they work. Pretty much just the brain in general is so amazing to me and I think it’s crazy all the stuff we are capable of. We don’t even know everything yet!

Lucy Goodman – Tennessee
Nomination & Photography by Jill Hobbs
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lucy is one of a kind. Lucy has spent the last four years of high school serving as Student Council President, and in that role, her class alone has raised over $180,000 dollars to feed the hungry. Lucy maintains a greater than 4.4 GPA while cheerleading for football & basketball and managing the baseball team. Lucy is a go-getter whose greatest characteristic is being a friend to all. Lucy is attending The University of Tennessee, Knoxville this fall to study pre-med in hopes of being a pediatrician.

Tell us about your role as Student Council President. What do you do in it and what do you love most about it?
As class president, I lead my class in many activities and traditions specific to my school. My favorite part about it is the relationships I have built throughout the years. I am so lucky to have been able to interact with every group of people at my school. My leadership role has given me an open line of communication to all groups at school.

Tell us about how you have led your class to raise over $180,000 to feed the hungry. What was your primary role in making this happen?
Our school has an annual food drive that student council heads up. The student council is responsible for bringing in those donations and spending the money in the most effective way possible. My Class Vice President and I went to discount stores across Middle Tennessee looking for places to spend all of our donations and get the most out of them.

What have you learned about your leadership style from this experience?
I have learned that it’s best to earn people’s respect instead of demanding it. I learned that it’s better to work with people rather than have them work for you. You should never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.

Share your cheer career. How did you get started, how many years have you cheered, and what are your greatest strengths as a member of the teen?
I started going to little kids cheer camp when I was 4-years-old. From then on, I just knew I was gonna cheer. I cheered from fifth grade all the way up to my senior year. Cheer ended a couple of weeks ago for me. I think my biggest strength on the cheer team was being able to keep everyone calm and make friends. Another of my strengths was knowing what was going on in the game.

What is your cheer team like and what is a favorite memory with them?
It was a very interesting and different group of girls that all had a passion for cheerleading. My favorite memory with them was when our basketball team won the state championship my junior year. The pure joy of all of us was one of my favorite things I’ve ever experienced.

Picture
Photography by Jill Hobbs
How did you come across Jill Hobbs Photography and what made you decide she was the right choice for your senior pictures? What was your experience like?
What did you love most about it? Jill’s daughter and I started out in preschool together and were in school together all the way up to eighth grade. We were close friends and remain friends to this day. I knew Jill was right for my pictures because I feel like she gets me. I am not someone who loves taking pictures, but Jill always seems to do it in a way that is fun for me. I always have a great time with her, and I feel like the pictures she takes of me really capture me as I am. We ask Jill to take pictures at all events from Prom to Graduation. She is the best!

How did you decide to be a manager of the baseball team and what are your roles and responsibilities?
When I was a freshman, my junior friend asked me if I wanted to do it with her. I was hesitant at first but now it’s my favorite thing I do. As a manager I make and carry coolers of Gatorade to the field, make sure all our med kits and the locker room is fully stocked, tend to any small injuries, and do any other random job our coaches or players need.

How do you do all this while maintaining a greater than 4.4 GPA?
I am honestly a very busy person but for me it’s all about delegating my time. Like saying I will do certain homework in between these two things, or I will study for this at this time. It’s a lot of work but I’m surrounded with great friends and family that help me through it all.

Congrats on getting into University of Tennessee! What are you looking forward to most about this new experience?
I am looking forward to making new friends and getting involved in school activities. I can’t wait to have a new domain after being at the same school for fifteen years. I am grateful for all I’ve already had, but I’m really looking forward to the future.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a strong passion for mission work. I was a part of the Goodpasture Missions Team. We served at a children's home in Mexico, and I absolutely fell in love with mission work. As a doctor, I want to do things such as Doctor's Without Borders. I want to help people all around the world.

How did you get to be a part of Goodpasture Missions Team and what is a memory from that trip you will never forget?
It was an open volunteer thing at my school. The group was going on a mission trip to Mexico and my Spanish teacher told me I should go. I made the decision to go, and it was the best thing I ever did. One memory I’ll never forget happened at the City of Children children’s home. It’s like an orphanage or a group home. I was with a bunch of the kids, and they started asking me in Spanish if I had a mom and a dad. I told them yes. Then, they started asking me to describe them and they were so excited. It was like they were amazed that I had parents. That was something that shook me when it happened, and I’ll never forget it.

Where do you hope to go to first in Doctors Without Borders and why there?
I really want to go to Mexico. My trips there with my school made it very close to my heart. I love it there and want to do anything possible to help them out there.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
This might sound a little random, but I could talk about football for hours. I love the NFL team the Tennessee Titans the most. I have been going to Titan's games my whole life. There are even pictures of my mom pregnant with me at Titan's games. I like to show people that girls can be girly and still love sports.

Gracie Schill – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Capture Life Photography by Davinda
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Gracie Schilll is a kind-hearted, god-fearing young woman whose hard work and determination are obvious reasons why many would consider her inspiring. When asking a peer about her she immediately said, “She is strong. Not just physically, but mentally. If she has a goal or a dream, nothing is going to stand in her way of accomplishing that.” When asking her sister she said, “I admire Gracie’s ability to make people laugh. She can put a smile on anyone’s face.” As her photographer, I can tell you that her sweet smile and inner beauty radiates from the inside out. She is sweet, kind, and loving but as tough as they get on a basketball court. I believe Gracie is the perfect example of an inspiring teen.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about my high school basketball season. Also, about my mini hat business that I just started this past winter and how I am saving that money for my journey to college. Additionally, anything about painting/drawing or art and writing poems.

Tell us about your basketball career. When did you get started, where are you with it now and what do you love most about it?
I started playing in 4th grade and have played ever since. I will also be playing in college for 4 years. I love how much I have learned about leadership and being a part of a team.

What is a favorite accomplishment from playing basketball?
My favorite accomplishment is going to the state final four my junior year. Getting to travel with my team and make so many memories along the way will be something I remember forever.

What is a favorite memory with your team?
My favorite memory with my team is our holiday sleepovers at my house. We would play games together to win prizes and watch movies. Through these times it felt like we bonded most, and I cherish them.

What would your team say you bring to the court?
I think my team would say I bring energy. I say this because I am more of a defensive player, and I like to work hard with the aspects of the game that I can always control.

What is the mini hat business you started? How did you think of it and how did you get it started?
So, this started with me getting a hat maker from my aunt for Christmas. After I had successfully made my first hat, I knew it was something I wanted to try and sell.

What was the hardest part about getting the hat business started & how did you get past it?
I would say the hardest part was buying all the products but still being able to make a profit. I got past this by trying to make limited stops at the store and to go when the yarn was on sale.

What have you learned about yourself along the way?
I have learned that I have quite the entrepreneurial spirit along the way. But also more importantly that I love making things for people that they can use and say they got them homemade from me:)

How did you find Capture Life Photography by Davinda and how did you decide Davinda was the photographer for you? What did you love most about the planning and the shoot itself?
Capture Life Photography by Davinda is extremely well known due to her incredible talent to make everyone comfortable and feel pretty! She did my sister's senior photos as well and we knew she had to do mine. What I loved most about the shoot is that it was her first shooting at the location we used so it felt unique and special.
I chose Davinda because I knew we would have fun and I know how incredible she is at what she does. What I loved most is that she let me be myself in the shoot and she made a video part of my session, and it really just shows how much fun we had while doing it.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
It does not cover that when I get to college I would love to pursue a business management degree in hopes to own my own business some day. I have tried having really small business ideas to sell stuff and make some money here and there. Another inspiring thing is I love making poems about deep feelings and relatable things that are not often talked about out loud.

What are you most looking forward to about college life?
I am most excited about getting to form new friendships and to set myself up for my future in business. I am also excited to play basketball and continue to grow as a player and person.

What do you like to paint/draw & what is a favorite piece you've created?
I like to paint really anything and I like drawing things with designs in them.

Picture

How long have you been writing poems and what do you write about most?
I started writing poems in about 7th grade. I like to write most about feelings that I feel I see other people going through.

Here is one of the poems I wrote…
The moon…
No matter what happens under the moon,
it’s easier to sleep when you’re happy,
And it's harder to function when you’re sad,
It’s easier to smile when you’re laughing,
It’s harder to laugh when you’re mad,
I may not know what the future holds,
But I do know I need you to be mine,
We might have to wait for the story to unfold,
But it would be better without us on the line,
I love you might be strong,
Yet with you it feels so easy,
And makes me feel like nothing is wrong,
Without you I feel so queasy,
I believe you are my forever,
And that will never change,
There may be obstacles along the way,
But nothing I would rather exchange,
Because no matter what happens under the moon,
It will forever be me plus you.
Made by. G

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
One thing I am passionate about and feel that I could talk about for a long time would be small business ideas. I feel that there is a lot that could be learned about this topic and it could be a fun and creative way for people to be able to be themselves more often.

Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Emily Duncan is an inspiration to anyone around her. As one of her teachers said, “it is impossible to be in a bad mood around her”.
Emily participated in the Sports Medicine program for 4 years. She was awarded the Oak Ridge High School Student of the Month by the Sports Medicine staff for her leadership, positive attitude, and smiling face.
She is self-motivated and passionate about her grades, working hard to maintain a 4.0+ GPA. She was awarded Academic All-State, is a Member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National English Honor Society.
She has taken two years of Child Guidance/Development. This has helped her decide to pursue a degree in Psychology, minoring in Child Development. She begins attending Texas State University in the Fall.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be interviewed about my time in Sports Medicine. Sports Medicine has taught me the importance of responsibility, leadership, and teamwork! I would also like to talk about my experience in my class, Child Guidance because this class has helped me choose to major in Psychology and minor in Child Development at Texas State University.

Tell us about your time in Sports Medicine. What do you do there and what are your roles and responsibilities?
In Sports Medicine, every day we are given a to-do list to complete during our class period. The list often includes preparing water coolers and practicing our taping skills. Student trainers work football games and practices, and then in the Spring, we are assigned another sport. My sport since sophomore year has been girls basketball. As their trainer, I have to make sure the girls feel comfortable with me. I have a schedule of all their games and keep my first aid kit organized. Our main responsibility is to always monitor and keep our eyes open for injuries with our players.

What leadership roles have you gotten to hold there?
As a senior, during football season I shadow the head athletic trainers, helping watch for and assist with any injury throughout the game. I am also responsible for making sure all supplies are packed. This includes crutches, an AED, splints, our big first aid kits, and many more items. As mentioned in the previous question, I am the girls head basketball trainer. This means I schedule the other student trainers to work basketball games, make sure everyone has an equal number of games. If anyone is unable to work their shift, I have to cover for them, in addition to my other scheduled games.

What is an example of a teamwork experience you had that you loved?
During a hot summer football scrimmage, one of our athletes started having symptoms of heat exhaustion. He didn’t start feeling this way until we had started to pack up all our water and ice coolers. This caused all eight student trainers and our head athletic trainer to quickly get him in cold ice water. Each trainer ran to our training room and filled coolers and ran them back outside, while our head trainer was calling 911, and notifying his parents. By the time the paramedics came, thanks to our quick, efficient work, his condition was already improving.

What does it mean to you to be awarded the Oak Ridge High School Student of the Month by the Sports Medicine staff?
Each month at Oak Ridge High School, the administrators send an email to the faculty requesting they nominate a “Student of the Month.” When I received the award, the head trainers said that I had been nominated because of my work ethic, good attitude, and maintaining good grades. It was a great feeling to know that my hard work had been recognized.

Share with us your experience in your Child Guidance class. What did you learn there that helped shape your future.
Oak Ridge has an in-school childcare in which the teachers can bring their children, ages three to five years old. As Child Guidance students, we create the lesson plans and teach every week. This class made me realize my passion for helping children and how this, combined with my interest in psychology, can be a career I could love.

What will your ultimate goal be in a career in Child Development?
My goal is to one day earn my Doctorate Degree in Psychology and begin my own practice to help children who need it most.

What are you most looking forward to about attending Texas State University?
I am excited to start a completely new journey. I do not know what to expect when I leave home and live with three other girls, but I cannot wait to find out. I am also excited to study what I want and find my true passion within these next four years. Specific to Texas State I cannot wait to float the river during the summer and live on such a beautiful campus.

How did you come across Angie Read Photography and what made you want to join her team?
We found Angie Read Photography because a close family friend had been on a similar power team with a different photographer, and I thought it looked like so much fun. One day, my mom was scrolling through Facebook and found Angie’s page and I applied. Once I met Angie, I knew she was the photographer and team for me.

What has been the best part of being on this team with other seniors?
I have loved being a part of this team with such an amazing group of girls. Each one of these girls is an inspiring teen to me. I love all the group shots Angie took of us, especially the Project Beauty shoot, because each girl had to share their personal definition of true beauty. All the definitions were beautiful and meaningful.

What is Academic All-State and what did you need to do to be awarded this honor?
Academic All-State is awarded by the Texas High School Coaches Association. It is awarded to student-athletes who maintain at least a 92 average in all courses throughout all four years of high school and are of good moral character.

What is Mu Alpha Theta and what do you get to participate in by being a member?
Mu Alpha Theta is the Math Honor Society. To be accepted into the honor society, I had to be enrolled in an upper-level math course and maintain an 85 average in that course. Through Mu Alpha Theta, as a senior, I can earn a cord for graduation if I remain in good standing.

What do you love best about being part of the National English Honor Society?
I love how close the members of NEHS are. We are all close friends and have a great time at meetings. After each meeting, we play board games or eat snacks. This has made NEHS a fun and memorable club.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Something my nomination does not cover is my ability to make everyone feel included no matter the situation. I always strive to have a positive attitude and use any obstacle I am faced with as a chance to learn and grow.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I want to help children who have gone through experiences no one should ever have to go through. I want to know how a child feels without them even having to tell me. Most importantly, I want to be able to change the future of children's therapy by finding ways to provide more funding where it is needed. There is much more research done for adult therapy versus children's therapy. This needs to be addressed, because more and more kids are experiencing abusive homes, divorced homes, or some type of trauma and need this kind of help.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself in the master's program and maintaining a good grade-point average, possibly in an internship with a child psychologist.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to watch and listen to musical theater. I have been involved in theater for many years and love the musical theater community.

Who do you find inspiring?
Things I find most inspiring are seeing people simply being kind to one another. It does not have to be anything special but seeing somebody go out of their way to complement or help someone is most inspiring to me.

Hailey Cates – Illinois
Nomination and Photography by Michael Sullivan Photography
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Hailey Cates is 14 years old and in 8th grade. She is a member of the National Junior Honors Society. Hailey has been dancing since she was 3. Dance is her passion and she believes it's a beautiful art and a way to express her feelings. Hailey can't wait to start dancing in high school
along with competing on her dance team. She would like to be a special education and dance teacher. Hailey would love to own her own studio and incorporate dance classes for special needs children.

Photography by Michael Sullivan Photography

What got you started in dance and what drives you to continue?
I started dancing when I was 3. My Mom decided to put me in for fun. I’ve tried multiple other sports but I didn't have the same feeling as I do when I'm dancing. I will be going to my 12th year dancing and it has been an amazing experience. What drives me to dance is the new opportunities, and the stories I get to tell when I'm dancing. Dancing to me is speaking but without words. I am a competitive dancer and at every competition I get to push myself with every dance, including my solo.

What kinds of dances do you study and which is your favorite? Why?
I take contemporary, jazz, lyrical, musical theater and ballet. I love each and every one of them but my favorite is contemporary. I get to express myself and have smooth and hard hitting movements in the same routine.  In general, I love to compete and do all types of genres of dance but if I had to choose one it would be contemporary.

What is a favorite memory from dance?
A favorite memory from dance is winning nationals. There is no better feeling than seeing our hard work pay off.

Do you do dance competitions, and if so, which was your favorite to travel to?
Yes, I have been competing since I was 6. I would say nationals was the best one to travel to. In the 20-21 dance season we went to Legacy Dance Championships. It was located in Wisconsin Dells. I got to get so close with a lot of people from my studio. Even though we dance at the same studio we don't get to see each other  every time we are in the studio so it was nice to spend time with everyone during our down time.

What is something other people might not realize about being a dancer if they have never been one?
How hard it really is. The whole point of dance is to make it look effortless. No one really understands the sweat, tears and all the training that goes into dance. A lot of non-dancers don't understand that we practice about 15+ a week year round. There is really no off season with dance.

How did you find Michael Sullivan Photography and why did you choose him for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found out about Michael Sullivan Photography through a few of the dancers at my studio that he did shoots with. My best friend was doing a shoot with him and invited me to come. I was already in love with the work he does but as soon as he started working with me it was amazing. My experience was awesome and I had so much fun doing it. He is willing to do anything and has such fabulous ideas. He encourages me while doing it so it means the world to me!

What led you to be interested in the National Jr Honors society?
What led me to be interested in the National Jr Honors society is that I was actually nominated by one of my teachers. Due to Covid-19, school was difficult the past few years. I went from going to school full time to elearning and then school part time and finally being able to be back at school full time. During this time, I maintained a GPA, of above 3.5, that allowed me to be nominated for NJHS.  I like being a leader for my school and NJHS allows me to be one.

What do you love most about school?
What I love most about school is that I have been fortunate to have some amazing teachers and support staff. When you love your job and it shows, you make a difference in children's lives and I’m lucky that some of my teachers have done that for me.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love working with special needs children.  Growing up, I had an aunt who had Down syndrome. She was just amazing. She taught me so much about life and I don’t think she ever knew it. I will always be thankful that I had my Auntie Karen in my life.

What are you doing now with special needs children?
I love going to my Mom's work whenever I can. It's very rare that I can go now due to Covid-19. But when I do go I love helping out with all the teachers, making the kids happy and staying on task. Some don't have the ability to speak, walk or move. Some use a “talker”; it's a tool where they can talk by pushing buttons to make sentences. My best friend also has a sister, Drew who has Cerebral Palsy. I love spending time with her and making her laugh. She's the cutest. I try to help out with her every chance I get.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would talk about dance for hours and hours. Everything is just so different about every style so it never gets boring. The technique and training that goes into every little move you do. It never gets old telling people that a pirouette isn't called a spin and what you have to do to get it correct. I love dancing and it's always been my favorite thing to do.

If you were going to talk someone into trying out dance, what would you tell them?
You have to be passionate and dedicated to dance. You can't just go out there and expect to get 5 pirouettes and be front and center for every dance you are in. You have to show you want it. If you just go to the studio and learn something and don't work and home, do you really want it? Do you just go to competitions to win or do you want to see the growth you have from the beginning of the season to now. Some of these things you have to think about.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be don't worry about what others think of you. Yes, you are going to be different from them. Everyone is different, but if you are happy, that’s all that matters.

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom, she has gone through so much but always found a way to make my brother and I smile everyday. Yes, it was hard for her, but she kept on pushing and is thriving in life. She has always been there for me and has been my biggest supporter since day one. She is my best friend and will always be. There is no one else in life that inspires me as much as she does. She has a heart of gold and always looks for the best in people, and can brighten up anyone and everyone's day. My mom is my biggest inspiration.

Ava Scott – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Juniper Bea Photography
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ava Scott is a fabulous representative for this magazine. She is inspiring in many ways. Her attitude, demeanor, confidence, athletic and academic skills are all admirable. Ava is a fabulous volleyball player amongst many other talents. She has been accepted to multiple universities and I can not wait to see where she chooses to continue her education and SHINE!

What should we definitely know about you?
I have been playing volleyball competitively for 6 years. That being said, I am 6ft tall. I am ranked number 13 out of 716 students with a 5.605 GPA. I have 4 little brothers spanning in age from 4 to 13, which I adore (sometimes). And, I’ve been traveling in airplanes by myself since I was 9 to visit my father, who lives in a separate state.

Tell us about your volleyball career. How did you get started and where are you with it now? What is your best skillset as a player?
I have been playing volleyball competitively since I was 12 years old on school and club teams. Playing volleyball at this level required me to stay involved with it year-round, starting in August and concluding in July. I also worked with a private trainer during this time to improve my physical abilities on the court. Unfortunately, I have decided to retire from the sport and not continue my athletic career in college. It was very enjoyable while it lasted, and I learned many valuable life lessons from being a part of a team.

What is your team like and what makes it unique? What is a favorite memory with your team?
I have played on many different teams, all with their own personalities. My favorite being my varsity high school team. I was one of the youngest players on the team at the time, so I had to work hard to compete with the older, more experienced girls. All my teammates were driven and hardworking. They gave me tips on how to improve my game and encouraged me when I was feeling frustrated. My favorite memories with this team were created in the locker room listening to music and getting hyped up. I was known to be the loudness and most energetic player on the court!

What is a favorite accomplishment as a player?
My favorite accomplishment as a player would be making it past the first round of playoffs senior year. A feat in which our high school volleyball program had not been able to accomplish in five years. It was so rewarding to see all my team’s hard work payoff. I have gotten my fair share of awards concerning my athletic abilities, but this feat my team overcame has been far more meaningful to me. Being a member of a team isn’t about “me”, it’s about “we”. As a teammate, I always tried to put my team first.

What drives you so hard to do so well in school?
Honestly, I have no idea. It’s just what I expect of myself. I am the type of person that doesn’t settle until I have given everything I possibly can to a cause. In my opinion, any person can be a good student if they put in the effort. All you must do is turn in your assignments on time, ask questions, and study. There are always resources available to help a person succeed if they take the time to look.

Where would others most likely find you and your friends and what would you be doing?
Others would most likely find my friends and I playing at the beach in Galveston, Texas. All my friends and I are very active people, so we like to go to the beach and run around, play in the waves, or get competitive with some sand volleyball. To us its important that we are still able to keep in-touch with our child-like selves!

What is a tradition your school holds that you attended that you will never forget?
I was not able to attend many football games since volleyball season occurred at the same time. However, I enjoyed attending football games with my friends. Usually, there would be themes for the student section to participate in so we would dress accordingly and cheers we would all chant to in the stands. The sense of comradery I got from attending those few games will remain with me forever. The joy of being able to engage with my peers and be a part of something bigger than myself, although it was just football, was very rewarding.

What is something you love doing with your little brothers that you hope they never forget?
Oh, so many things! I’m smiling just thinking about it. I hope they remember all of it to be honest: all the dance parties, all those times playing at the park, all the bath times, all the car ride jam sessions. Although they can get on my nerves sometimes, they are the most reliable and supportive people I have in my life. No matter what, I know they will always love me for who I am and look up to me.

What is the best part of being a big sister to so many boys?
Honestly, the best part of being a big sister to so many boys is not having to be girly. They always want to throw the football around with me or play wrestle. I don’t have to play with dolls or play dress-up. I also don’t have to share my things with them because they don’t want to borrow my clothes or use my body spray, anything like that!

Picture
Photography by Juniper Bea Photography

What was the hardest thing to get used to traveling by yourself? What adventures do you hope to do by yourself after graduation?

The hardest thing to get used to traveling by myself was the independence of it. It was the first time I truly had to do something by myself, even if it was simply just sitting on a plane. As I got older, it evolved into me learning to navigate airports by myself and interact with strangers. This experience has taught me a lot about how to navigate life on my own. Although I still have much to learn regarding this, I feel it’s given me a good foundation. After graduation, I look forward to potentially going to college out-of-state and I think that will be the greatest adventure of all.

How did you find Juniper Bea Photography and what made you decide Madison Little was the photographer for you? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mother used to work with Madison Little, the owner of Juniper Bea Photography, so that’s how we discovered her amazing work. My experience with her is wonderful! She is such a talented artist and I think its so inspiring that she turned her hobby into a full-time career. I loved how Madison made me feel beautiful and confident throughout the shoot.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a super hard-working person. I have maintained stellar grades, while also training vigorously for volleyball day-in and day-out. On the court, I am always the loudest person and put my teammates first. Playing this sport has taught me so much about leadership and the correct way to uplift others to achieve their full potential.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers, it would concern confidence. Everyone, especially young women, are so nervous about their looks and the way they appear to others. This impairs them from being able to let down their guards and create real connections with others. I believe that if we all could learn to accept and love ourselves, we would be more inclined to accept and love others free of judgements.

Picture
Photography by Juniper Bea Photography

What do you think are the top causes of low self esteem in young women?
I believe that the top causes of low self esteem in young women are societal expectations. We are all groomed to believe that our worth stems from what men think about our bodies. From a young age we all played with Barbie’s and watched Disney princess films in which women’s proportions were depicted unrealistically, so we adopted that as normal and the only desirable form. Women must remember that everyone’s version of healthy and beautiful looks different, and that our worth can only be determined within ourselves. These ideals are easier said than accepted, but we must try to remember that we are the only person in our life that is permanent so we must treat them with care.

What kinds of things have you done to raise your own self esteem when you're not feeling all that?
To raise my own self esteem when I’m not feeling all that, I try to think about the non-physical elements of myself that I take pride in. I am not solely defined by my outward appearance, there are many other amazing qualities that I present to the world such as my mind and kind heart. I also try to remind myself that there is not one definition of beautiful. I am beautiful in multiple ways that don’t have to do with the generic definition of the word.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve accomplished so far is maintaining all A’s throughout four years of high school while taking AP and other advanced courses. This took a lot of focus and dedication to achieve. I have spent whole weekends studying and many late nights completing homework. I have had to sacrifice a lot to get to where I am today including hanging out with family and friends. However, they have all paid off and I have been admitted to several prestigious universities.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
If someone wants to be where I am today, all they must do is be persistent. It’s okay to fail, you just have to decide to learn from it and move on. Don’t give up simply because there’s a bump in the road, you’re stronger than that. The only person that can define you and what you are capable of is yourself.

Samuel Hughes – Nevada
Nomination & Photography by Amanda Hughes
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Samuel Hughes was diagnosed with autism at age three but overcame the odds to become an outstanding 13-year old. While barely verbal at the time he was diagnosed, he worked hard during countless hours of therapy and “graduated” in just a few years. Now in 7th grade, Sam goes to his STEM school an hour early each day for Leadership class, enjoys working on the school yearbook, and excels at the piano. His smile is infectious, and nothing thrills him like making other people laugh. Sam is a joy to be around and we are thrilled to nominate him.

What should we definitely know about you?
I think I am a very smart person, I love school, and I have straight A’s in all of my classes. My favorite classes are yearbook, English, and History. I like to play soccer and I love to read also. I enjoy helping organize my school’s events in my leadership class because I like helping out with school and helping my teachers. I love animals and I want to be a vet when I grow up.

What do you love most about school?
I just love my classes the most. I love learning about all kinds of topics and new things. I really like my school because the teachers all come up with interesting things to do in class. In history we got to do a simulation where each group represents a country and we discussed how different countries might handle different situations. We also get to pick different activities to do with the teachers during lunch. Teachers host different activities like playing games with students or building legos. There are lots of lunchtime activities to choose from every day.

What do you do for the yearbook? What are your primary roles and responsibilities there and what do you love most about it?
In Yearbook, I am assigned to do certain pages. This year I’ve worked on the “6th Grade Best Friends” page as well as the orchestra page. I take pictures, put them in the yearbook website (which kind of models the yearbook), and make captions about those pictures. The thing I love most about Yearbook is probably taking pictures of the students. I like interviewing them too!

What about English do you love?
I love all the different topics we learn about! This week we are learning about the Titanic. We read survivor accounts and other passages about the Titanic. We learned about the details about what happened with the Titanic and what went wrong. Then we analyzed what we read, created flow charts, and answered some questions about what we learned. I got to read a Shakespeare play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as part of an advanced group that I got to be in. I really liked the drama and the storyline of the play.

What is something that you learned in History that you find fascinating?
There’s a lot! This year we learned about the Holocaust. The topic was very sad, but I liked learning more about it. I had learned about it before but I think it was good to get more details and information about what happened, even though it made me sad. I also learned about Napoleon. I thought it was interesting how he had many successes but also a lot of failures as well.

Tell us about your soccer career.
I started playing soccer when I was five years old. I usually play goalie and defender. I love trying to catch the ball when I’m the goalie and trying to keep it away from the goal when I am defender. One thing that is kind of hard is that this year I tried out for my middle school soccer team and I didn’t make the team. I felt sad, but I want to try out next year. I will practice and train and try again in a year!

What is a favorite accomplishment from playing soccer?
My favorite accomplishment from playing soccer was when I helped my team win the championship in 2019! I was the team goalie and our team was in 3rd place overall in the league when the tournament started. We won our first game. The next game (the semi-finals) we tied and so we had to do penalty kicks. I was the goalie and I blocked all of the other team’s kicks and we won. In the championship game, we tied again. I was the goalie in that game as well and I helped us win again. It was a great day.

What are you reading now and what is your favorite book to recommend?
I just read “The New Kid” by Jerry Craft. It was the book for our school’s book club, and I really liked it. “The New Kid” was a great story and I liked how the boy was able to overcome his problem and forgive another kid who was a jerk. I also liked the comedy in the book. “A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness is another book from the club. I really liked how the monster helps the boy with his sadness. I felt really sad during the book but I liked the lessons in the tales the monster told.

Picture
Photography by Amanda Hughes

What have you learned about yourself in leadership class?
I’ve actually learned that I’m shy and I get nervous sometimes that I will say something wrong to the other kids. But I’ve also learned that I am very helpful and I don’t back down from a challenge. This year I ran for class secretary and lost. But I learned how to write a speech and I know some things I can do better when I try again next year!

What do you think is your strongest leadership quality?
I am very helpful. I can recognize when something needs to be done and I am pretty good at taking charge and helping out when that happens. For example, we needed extra workers to help out with the school Valentine’s dance and so I volunteered to work both shifts (instead of just one). I enjoy helping out and feeling like I can make a difference.

Do you have pets now? Tell us about them.
Yes, I have five pets and they are all chickens! They are about six months old and they just started laying eggs. They like to eat and love to look for food when we let them out into the yard. This is my first time having chickens and they are very fun. I like holding them, even though sometimes they try to jump away! Sometimes my sister and I bring them into the house, even though mom and dad tell us not to.

What type of music do you like to play on the piano?
Classical music is probably my favorite. I really like fast songs. One of my favorite songs is “Theme from Swan Lake,” because it was very beautiful and melodic. I really liked the drama of the song too. I also like Fur Elise because it is a classic song that everybody knows.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I like challenges and I always work to overcome them. When I was in second grade, I set a goal to read a million words, and I did it! Even though I get frustrated, I work hard to accomplish what I want to do. Right now I am learning Moonlight Sonata on piano and it is hard, but I feel accomplished learning such a long and difficult song. I know I will feel good when I pass it off. I always try to focus on my work and don’t give up until I’m done.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would do a presentation on animals. I would include how different animals survive in their natural habitats, how the food they eat helps them, how humans are threatening different species and how we can stop this, and how to treat different species wounds. I am very passionate about animals because I love how interesting their lives are and how they survive. My favorite animal has to be dolphins. This is because they are a very friendly species and they are intelligent and cute.

We see your mom is also your amazing photographer. Do you get to help plan the shoots with her or do you get to just show up and look cool? What do you love most about photo shoots with your mom?
I love to help my mom with photoshoots. Sometimes I help her plan, and sometimes she has me help her with her gear. A lot of the time if I’m not in her pictures, I help her by holding something called a reflector. It helps control the amount of light in the photos. I’m also in charge of making people laugh or smile for pictures.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I think reading a million words when I was in second grade. That goal is usually for 4th and 5th graders but I wanted to do it when I was younger. I read all the time and I did it!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to stay calm and try not to stress too much! Forgive yourself too, because everybody makes mistakes.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself graduating high school! I also want to serve a mission for my church and go to college.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to cook! I am kind of obsessed with Master Chef and I like to learn how to make new dishes.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can do tricks on the trampoline in our backyard.

3 Things on your bucket list
Eat at one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants
Cook lamb chops
Become a veterinarian

Who do you find inspiring?
I love Gordon Ramsay. He is an amazing chef and he is able to handle a lot of pressure.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring because I have overcome some challenges in my life. I learned to talk when I didn’t know how and I overcame some of the difficulties I have because of autism.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I scored very high on my last English and Math MAPs (standardized) testing and I’m pretty proud of myself for that!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would like to be interviewed on my high school experience. I feel like there were so many different contributions to how I was able to grow throughout high school that it can’t be narrowed just into one. From playing football, juggling honors classes, maintaining a position in student council, and finally experiencing high school before, during, and after the COVID pandemic; it has shaped me to be the person I am today.

How did you start playing football and what inspired you to play high school football?
Prior to high school I had been playing flag football since I was around 6 years old and continued to play for the next 7 years. I just loved the sport, and I loved the energy that came with playing. When the high school counselors visited our classrooms in 8th grade, I asked her if she could find out if I would be allowed to play football at Chandler High and get into the “Boys Academy Football” lifting class. From then on, I let my love for the sport guide me.

What was it like being on the football team? What position did you play, how did you fit in with your teammates, and you were the first - but were you the only for those two years? What was it like being the only female in a male dominated sport?
I played as one of the backup safeties while I was on the team, and it was difficult. From the conditioning to sticking out like a sore thumb, not everyone liked the fact that I was on the field. There were definitely a few teammates that made that very clear at practices, but I received more love and support than anything. I found a family and gained so many brothers that helped me even after I stopped playing. To this day I prefer the title of a football player. Being a female shouldn’t have to be a description, it feels limited when people add female in the front of it. I chose to play right up until COVID, I valued the safety of my family more than my football journey and decided to end it. I stayed in the lifting class just in case COVID died down and still stay with my team, but officially stopped going into my senior year.

What did you learn about your self during that time?
I learned that you can’t please everyone, and you can’t change everyone’s minds. It took some time to realize this and at first it hurt me that people I looked up to were looking down on me because of something I couldn’t control, my gender. I used to be so concerned with what other people would think before realizing I’m doing this for me, if they have an issue then that’s something that’s out of my hands.

What is a favorite memory from being on this team?
As a girl it’s obvious I can’t participate in pregame and post-game hype in the boy’s locker room. So, I would just relax in the hallway because my locker room was too quiet. Some of the guys would stop to chat with me or just sit for a bit. But this memory took place after a big game. The boys got their locker room decorated to close the season, and all the snacks were also in there. Some of my teammates realized I couldn’t get anything and didn’t get anything decorated, so they started to bring me things to help me feel included. They even made sure everyone was dressed so I could go check out the decorations. It really meant a lot to me when they would realize that I didn’t get the same opportunities as them and they still include me.

Picture
Photography by Liebrock Photography

Why did you choose Liebrock Photography as your senior photographer & how did you find her? What was your experience like both before and during your photoshoot? What did you love most about it?
I chose Mrs. Liebrock because she was present as the photographer throughout my football journey. She had even taken some pictures of me while I was playing that I really loved. I wanted to stick with someone from the community and someone I knew I’d be comfortable with. I’m not someone who likes being in front of the camera, but she made it so comfortable for me which really helped. I like how she incorporated natural poses and incorporated pictures that capture who I am.

What is DECA and what do you love about being a part of this organization?
DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America, it’s a club that goes hand in hand with the Marketing 1 class I took my freshman year. I learned so much about promotion and financing that I carried with me in student council for the proceeding years. I loved the creative freedom with the products and events that were planned, and it was all applicable to real life.

What have you accomplished in DECA?
While in DECA I mainly helped with promotion of events and slight participation in events like the lip sync battle. I was still not experienced enough to have a major hand it and didn’t have enough room in my 7 class schedule to continue it throughout high school.

Tell us more about your time in student council.
Though my nomination mentions my position in student council, I don’t think it’s able to truly cover the contributions over the years. I’ve volunteered a lot of my time into student council for the sake of my peers. I’ve helped plan school events from homecoming week to on campus activities like movie nights. But my favorites have been the volunteer opportunities to visit elementary school and spend time with them post pandemic.

After serving student council all four years, and now as the Student Body President, what do you find is the hardest part about having a leadership role in this magnitude? What is the easiest?
The hardest part of having this leadership role is remembering that I can’t involve everyone. Not everyone enjoys high school the way I do, not everyone likes to be as involved either. I’ve learned the best thing to do is open myself up to feedback and if it’s not something I can do, I reach out to another club who I think can help. The easiest part would be putting myself out there. After 4 years of embarrassing myself in front of hundreds and hundreds of peers, I’ve learned that the more embarrassing I get it, helps other people feel better about participating.

What have you found is your greatest leadership strength?
My greatest leadership strength is not just expecting from other people, but placing myself with them. You can’t be a leader if you aren’t willing to do what you expect others to and you need to help them as well. If you just tell people to do things and don’t do anything, you’re just a boss, not a leader. Leaders guide the way and make their own path, and I believe that’s what I’ve been doing.

Picture
Photography by Liebrock Photography

What do you hope your classmates will remember about you?
I hope my classmates remember that I did my best to include them. Throughout high school and dealing with COVID, I constantly worry that I’m not doing enough to make their high school experience memorable in a positive way. I hope they remember how I always ask for their feedback and input, and I really hope they remember that I listened to them.

What legacy or inspiration do you hope to leave behind for the next generation of students?
I hope to inspire them to get involved in something. We have over 60 clubs on campus, and I had the opportunity to find one that helps me thrive and enjoy high school to fullest. I even found a sports team that gave me people I hope to have in my life forever. I want the next generation to know, there’s always someone or something out there for you; but you have to go find it, it’s not going to magically appear.

What honors classes have been your favorite and why?
My favorite honors classes have been AP Human Geography and IB Psychology. AP Human Geography taught me a lot about culture, mixing of cultures, and how human movement influences the world. It’s something that is very applicable to me being a person of mixed race and helped me understand a lot about our world. As for IB Psychology, it’s already a topic that interests me and now I feel like I’m learning about behaviors that apply to those around me. The concept of how the brain works is just fascinating. We get to open up and discuss about how our lives are affected or how we can apply this to real life. It’s a safe space and an amazing class to see from other people’s perspectives.

What will you miss most about high school?
I will miss the people the most. I can walk through school and talk to so many people from all walks of life on a daily basis. Some of these people only feel comfortable acknowledging me with a smile or a nod, but it’s because they see so much of me on campus. It’s not the same outside of school, where people are more likely to pretend you don’t exist. I’ll miss the feeling of being acknowledged as a human, but I’ll take the time to reestablish myself soon enough outside of high school.

What is a favorite memory from your time there?
My favorite memory throughout high school would have to be homecoming week as a whole. I had the opportunity to run with one of my closest friends, whom I’ve known since elementary school. From us finding old pictures for our flyers, to him helping me relax during the homecoming assembly, and finally us winning homecoming king and queen. I was able to experience something not everyone gets to, and I was able to do it with someone who means a lot to me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
There are many things I am passionate about, but the big ones are mental health and societal issues. I feel that growing up is a difficult task on its own but throwing in a media based society where kids are exposed to so many ideas at once and have so many expectations set on them due to their race or gender is even harder. I constantly preach that communication is nothing without comprehension. A person doesn’t have to face the same problems to show empathy and to validate the struggles of others.

Mackenzie Revels – Florida
Nomination & Photography by Alyssa Chappell Photography
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Mackenzie Revels is inspiring because this young lady has a big heart, and she loves hard! Mackenzie would absolutely do anything to help a friend in a time of need and make sure they have a smile on their face. I have absolutely loved getting to know her throughout the process of her senior portrait experience and I am so thankful for having her in my life!

Why did you choose Alyssa Chappell Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like/where did you go, how did you plan, the whole work? What did you love most about it?
This year is my senior year; I knew exactly who I wanted to photograph my senior pictures just from seeing her amazing work. I love Alyssa, not just for her beautiful talent but for her love and dedication to everyone she works with. We started our day at 6 am for makeup and hair. She stayed right by my side the whole time. When we started our journey to get all 20 outfits and 3 different locations into one day before we were out of daylight it was very stressful, but we were able to get it done just a couple of minutes before sunset. Not once did she seem stressed out or worried, she took over 2,000 pictures, and overall, it was an amazing experience! I will never forget the experience and will always love her.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to get interviewed about my love and passion for modeling. Since I was a young girl I have always pretended I was on the runway. My family always used to joke because no matter the weather I always made sure I looked fashionable. I have the great determination that I will succeed in my dreams and I will be successful one day!

What made you want to start modeling? Who is your inspiration and why?
I wanted to be a model/actress ever since I was a little girl. My family always said I Should try modeling, especially my grandma. She is now passed, and I would want nothing more than to make her happy and show her that I will be successful with modeling. My inspiration isn’t a particular person. It would be all the girls who have set their minds on their goals and worked for what they achieved!

What is the hardest thing about modeling that people who don't model may not realize? One of the hardest things for me about modeling would be the mental block that can get inside your head. A Lot of people don’t see the mental part of something and how much it can affect a person and their purpose.

What do you think is the best part about modeling/what do you love most about it?
I think the best part of modeling is that I get to show my true beauty and emotion just from a picture. A picture of yourself can show a lot about you. I love being able to show my family and friends my pictures.

What is your favorite memory and / or accomplishment with modeling?
My favorite memory involved with modeling is going to New York. I loved walking around the city and seeing all the different types of styles. I would love to go model there one day.

What are your goals with it?
My future goal with modeling is to make it into many more magazines. I would love to model for any big company and make it to Miami swim week or New York fashion week one day. Overall, I would love to make a career out of modeling and hopefully make a great impact on the world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Something inspiring about me is the love I give to my family and friendships despite the troubles and losses I have faced that could've slowed me down. Losing someone you love knocks you down harder than anything in life, but that's when you choose to get back up and live for that someone. That can be difficult when you're so young. After losing my mema at a young age I decided I will step up and achieve my dreams!

Family is so important. What is a favorite tradition you have with your family?
My family and I spend a lot of holidays together and we also try to get together as much we can. My favorite tradition with my family is our annual trip. Every year my parents and all my siblings take a trip to a different state each time. It is so much fun seeing all the new stuff we have never seen before, and we always have the best time.

What things do you love doing with your family when spending time with them?
During the weekends or on holidays my family usually will come over and we will all go outside and eat. We always try to do fun activities and try new family games. We always have so much fun and laugh the whole night!

What will you miss most about high school and your friends there when you graduate?
I have always loved school and especially coming and being with all my friends. I think the thing I will miss the most is all my friends I see at lunch and in the class. I also will miss all my favorite teachers I have seen every day for the past four years. This is a bittersweet time, and I will always be grateful for the time this high school has given me but now it’s time for the next chapter.

What is a favorite fun time you have had with your friends that you feel like you'll never forget?
My friends and I always have so much fun together no matter where we go so it's so hard to pick one particular place. A very fun time my friends and I had was when we went to Daytona during the summer. We had so much fun and ate amazing food. I love going on trips with my friends it’s always the best time!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I could talk about body image on social media all day. I have always tried to maintain the perfect image for social media because that's just what it seemed everyone wanted. More and more people started to look perfect on social media. As I got older, I realized it wasn't about the image put online, it’s about how I am as a person on the inside. I know at the end of the day it doesn't matter how beautiful your body and face look. It's about how beautiful and pure I am from the inside.

What are the best and worst parts of social media and how do you find a balance somewhere in the middle?
Social media definitely has its ups and downsides. I have always struggled with what is real and what is fake. Although social media is such a great way to show off the talent and a great way to communicate with people, it can be super dangerous physically and mentally. One way I say I balance social media is by not believing everything I see; anyone can post anything. The social media world can be very discouraging when it comes to body image and beauty in general. I like to follow the positive accounts to keep the positive post going through my feed.

My accomplishments in Agriculture. I have received numerous local, regional, and state awards for public speaking, parliamentary procedure, and livestock judging. I have been very successful in showing dogs and market lambs and served on my FFA chapter officer team for 3 years.

How did you get started in agriculture?
I started in 4-H when I was 10 showing almost every small animal offered, when I reached high school, I joined our FFA chapter and began showing market beef and lambs. I continued through my years in high school being heavily involved with all that was offered and my love for agriculture has become stronger every day.

What is the most difficult thing you've faced in that endeavor and what did you do to get past it?
The most difficult thing I faced was learning what I was passionate about and where I wanted to go in this industry. Agriculture is such a diverse industry that is growing and changing daily. I began to become more involved in many events offered in FFA to find what had the biggest impact on me. I soon learned that I had a passion for judging livestock and all that went into raising and making good shows and market animals. I also found that I was so passionate about Ag. that I wanted to pursue a degree in it so I could inform the incoming agriculturist the same as my Ag. teachers did for me.

What steps did you need to take to get on the livestock judging team?
To get on the team was as simple as signing up and showing up to practices and competitions. It was all of the learning on how to properly judge that had many steps to it.

What is a favorite memory from FFA?
My favorite memory in FFA was my last banquet, although it was sad to leave everyone behind I was beyond thankful for where it had brought me, Ag. and everyone who helped me become involved helped pave my path to where I am today.

What advice would you give to others who are interested in getting into agriculture?
My advice to anyone who wants to become involved in ag is to learn a little bit of everything and see what really drives you. The agriculture industry has so many opportunities and so much to learn and grow from. I would certainly say it is one of the more interesting things you could ever get involved in.

What do your duties as an Ag Ambassador include?
My duties in Ag. Ambassadors are to be the face of Fresno State Agriculture. I personally love giving tours of our farm and getting involved with high school field days. I will attend California State FFA Leadership Conference to host a workshop and I am part of this year's California State Ag. Ambassadors Conference planning committee.

What is your favorite leadership role within that organization?
My favorite leadership role is teaching the students that come and tour our farm about the different animal units. There is nothing better than informing the incoming agriculturist. I think it's a great opportunity to let it influence them the same way it did for me.

What have you learned from helping with Red Wave livestock show?
With helping at Red Wave I am learning what it is to be like on the other side of the show ring and just how much goes into making a livestock show run smoothly. I have had to opportunity to help organize and inform the showman and I only hope to become more involved in the years to come.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Anything agriculture, I have grown up believing in the future of this industry and loved falling in love with it more and more. I have made myself diverse in knowing about all aspects of agriculture that I can and I can say it is most definitely become the reason I know what I want to do with my life.

What is Gymkhanas and what do you do in it?

A Gymkhana is a series of events completed on horseback, in our local gymkhana I have competed for the last two seasons on my horse Tuff who I trained. I've been working on the bond between my horse and I all while having fun.

When you become a high school Ag teacher, what is one thing you cannot wait to do with your students?
There is so much I look forward to but, I cannot wait to start SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) as I am so passionate about showing livestock. I can't wait to watch my students compete in shows and competitions as well, and of course, watch them become the new faces of the industry.

Nomination: Alana has overcome fear and adversity through her final years of high school and first year of college. She pushed past bullying and stereotypes to become successful and strong. She has maintained a 3.5 GPA, joined a sorority even though she was uncertain, signed a modeling contract with a top agency in Miami, and has stayed an amazing daughter, big sister, and role model. She pushes past her struggles every day to work hard in class and the gym, staying healthy both physically and mentally. She is always there for friends, even when she’s having a bad day and makes sure to keep family a priority even though she lives out of town and has a busy schedule.

What we know about you?
During high school I changed a lot, figuring out who I am and whom I want to surround myself with. It was hard though and was mentally taxing, Sports was a big help in helping me manage the ups and downs. It build my confidence so much that I became interested in going to college further away from home. However, once I moved away (not far only Orlando) things were still hard but then I joined a sorority and started modeling. Both to these things have really boosted my confidence and helped me really started loving college.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
When I started high school, I decided to switch from over 12 years of dancing to be an athlete. I joined the basketball team and the track team. I wasn't very good at either but I worked hard and trained in the offseason and was able to not only play basketball all four years, both JV and Varsity, but I made the Varsity track team my sophomore year and advanced to become one of the top female sprinters by my senior year. I won a lot of races, won many metals, and several team awards.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I think I'm most passionate about sports and working hard to achieve your goals. I feel like working out, training, and being healthy is very important and playing sports helps you achieve this. Sports are also one of my favorite things to both participate in and watch. I think they're not only good for your physical health, but also for your mental health.

Nomination: Dani is an outstanding person who not only balances cheerleading, soccer, and managing the school store she also speaks out about social justice issues and stands up for those who need a voice. Her electric smile will brighten your day. She is a wonderful young woman who has the potential to change the world.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about the environmental impacts of technology and how our generation has the power to save the environment. I think you should know that I am very passionate about the environment and the current climate crisis. I want to find more sustainable ways to integrate architecture in the environment to create less waste and environmental harm.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One inspiring thing my nomination does not cover is the volunteer work I perform in the community in collaboration with my schools national honor society and educators rising program. Through this society, I have been able to volunteer at an elementary school for years and go in early each week to assist a teacher. I have loved being able to help the kids learn and grow their knowledge of grammar, spelling, and math; whilst also creating a safe and comfortable classroom that fosters an amazing learning environment.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present the topic of the current climate change crisis. I would choose this topic because I feel that is the most urgent matter that needs to be addressed in our nation and the whole world. The environment is what supports us and continues to foster life, and I want others to realize we cannot reverse the trauma we have caused it. I want to emphasize to as many people as I can that we need to start trying to heal the environment so human life and wildlife can continue to flourish.

She has a love for helping children and those having special needs. Deanna is a kind soul that is willing to help anyone and everyone!

What should we know about you?
I am truly a hard worker and give the most efforts into what I do. I grew up in a small town where family means everything which truly mine is my whole world! I greatly work for all the amazing events in my life I strive for.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

Kaitlyn Waguespack

Picture

Kaitlyn Waguespack– Louisiana
Nomination by Kristin Waguespack.
Photography by J.D. Spencer Photography.
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine.

Nomination: Kaitlyn is truly an inspiration to all that know her. What most people don’t know about Kaitlyn is that she suffers from severe anxiety. Kaitlyn fights this silent struggle daily but maintains a 4.0 average and is a born leader. Kaitlyn is the Vice President of her senior class, Drum Major of her school’s band and is in both the Gifted Academic and Talented Music programs at her high school. Kaitlyn plans to use her experiences with anxiety to help others with the same issues by majoring in Childhood Psychology with a focus on Mental Health Counseling.

What would you most like to talk about?
I would absolutely love to talk about the role music has played in my life. I have been playing in the school band for seven years now, and my life would be completely different had I not picked up a flute as a little fifth grader. Band is one of the many areas that I have excelled in throughout my academic career. I have been blessed to have been able to participate in honor bands across the state of Louisiana, meeting inspirations in the world of band and making new friends along the way!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination lists some of my achievements, but it does not cover the struggles I’ve had to overcome to get there. I have dealt with being belittled by my peers almost my entire life. Most people see my list of accomplishments and think that everything has been handed to me on a silver platter. The truth is I spend hours upon hours working towards every goal I have, never taking no for an answer. Throughout the past year, I have also faced hardships at home—from almost losing my mom (my best friend), to my dad facing a work injury.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I can talk about the importance of mental health care for teens for hours on end. I am a HUGE advocate for teen mental health because living with crippling anxiety is my reality. I believe that it is so important to recognize that mental illness is just as important as any physical illness and should be treated as such. Countless teens lose their battle to mental struggles every single day because mental health is seen as such a taboo topic, and my life goal is to help break this stigma. Your mental illness does not define who you are.

What would you most like to be interviewed about
I would love to be interviewed about my educational success because it has never been easy for me. I have had to work extremely hard for my grades and take much pride in that.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One inspiring thing my nomination does not cover is my overall health success. I have been diagnosed with a heart condition since birth, but never let me stop me from my goals in life.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present to my peers the challenges of overcoming a sports injury. I would choose this because I have gone through three different surgeries for my knee, but never let it stop me from my athletic goals. I have learned that these setbacks have only made me a stronger athlete as well as person. So for anyone struggle with an injury, I am here to tell you it’s possible to overcome it and come out of it stronger than before.

What would you most like to talk about?
My career in cheer, and the Christian woman I’ve become within my church. I also enjoy volunteering at my church and within my community.

You mentioned cheer first. Tell us about your cheer career. When did you start and what do you love so much about it?
I started my cheer career when I was 8 years old. As a little girl, I always looked up to the older cheerleaders. I love being a role model for the younger cheerleaders at my school. I also love being a part of a team and team bonding.

What has been your favorite cheer accomplishment?
I am still relatively new to my competitive cheer career. I have enjoyed working on my tumbling skills and learning new things.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
We attended a competition competing against larger teams. We got second place, but it felt amazing that we held our own against teams that were 2-3 times larger.

What are your church activities like and what do you love so much about them?
Our church has an amazing youth program. I am very blessed to have a leadership role within our youth program. We also have what we call Life Groups. We meet weekly to connect throughout the week and stay strong in faith. It’s an amazing feeling being able to be the hands and feet of God.

What kind of volunteer activities do you do at your church, and which is your favorite?
I have had wonderful opportunities to serve our community with food distribution during covid and serving during what we call Hope week. Hope week is where we spend a week doing random acts of kindness in amazing ways. Hope week has been my favorite.

What volunteer activities do you do in your community and what leadership responsibilities have volunteering provided you? What do you feel is your best leadership quality?
I have been a junior cheerleading coach for our local youth cheerleading program. Volunteering as a junior cheer coach has been extremely rewarding. It has really opened my eyes to how important it is to provide positive learning experiences for these girls.
Being positive and making an encouraging environment to work in is my best leadership quality.

Dave Cyphert from ProPoint Media nominated you as he thinks very highly of you. How did you get involved in his program and what do you love most about it?
Dave was the photographer for our cheer picture. We immediately clicked. So far, we have worked really well together, and I look forward to more photo shoots with him.

What has been your favorite photoshoot so far with him? What about it would make you encourage others to get involved?
We have only done one, but it was pretty amazing.
The sense of being comfortable in your own skin. Being confident and happy is beautiful. Dave has a wonderful gift that makes that easy.

What type of music do you enjoy playing the most? Do you have a favorite go-to song?
I have a very eclectic taste in music. I love a little bit of everything.
No. It really depends on my mood.

When did you start hunting and fishing and what do you find most challenging about it? What is the hardest thing about hunting or fishing that people who don't do either may not realize?
I started fishing and hunting around age 7. Honestly, being quiet and waiting patiently is the hardest part.
It takes practice and knowledge to be successful.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The importance of faith and a real relationship with God is the thing that I would talk about to my peers. It’s not a popular topic I am aware. It is ultimately so important though.

If you were to give a speech on this, what would your opening statement be?
God can provide the ultimate happiness and freedom that everyone wants and needs.
