Isabel Dempsey – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Stephanie Durham Photography
Issue 57 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Isabel is a quiet leader. As a competitive gymnast and cheerleader, she has had her share of injuries and setbacks but has overcome them with tenacity and grace. These experiences have given her the ability to guide younger athletes as they face their own challenges. She is a calming influence and fiercely loyal to her friends and teammates. It is no wonder that she has earned their respect. As a player/coach, she has discovered she has a heart for helping children. This heart and love of science have led her to peruse a career in pediatric medicine.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my time in gymnastics as an athlete and as a volunteer coach. I spent a lot of time and effort creating a safe space for young girls to speak up about their physical issues as well as their mental ones. Gymnastics is an extremely rigorous sport; and without older mentors who care about you, it’s easy to lose the love you have for the sport.

Tell us about your gymnastics career. When did you get started, how long have you been in it, etc.
I began doing gymnastics when I was 4 years old. I have grown up in the gym and starting in the 5th grade I practiced 25 hours a week. I have won state 3 times as an all-around champion and four times as an individual event champion. I have qualified for regionals 3 times and traveled across the country to compete in championships.

What is your daily routine with gymnastics like? How much time do you spend training?
My daily routine for senior year was much easier than it has been in years past. I spent about 20 hours in the gym practicing. I would go to school from 8 to 3 and then practice from 4:30 to 8:30 every weekday. I would also have Saturday morning practices from 9 to 1, then typically spend a few hours after helping around the gym with coaching.

What is your best performance (floor, beam, etc.) and what is your favorite? Why?
My best performance has always been floor. It has come naturally to me. I have won State 3 times and have been listed in America's top 100 for the event. However, my favorite event has to be the beam. I feel 100% in control and focused when I compete. It is the perfect combination of thrilling and graceful which makes it fun to watch as well.

What is a favorite accomplishment in gymnastics?
One of my favorite accomplishments was when I was told that I would not qualify for state. I then challenged myself to train for extra hours in the gym that entire year. I finished the year by winning all four events at State and the all-around title in my age group.

What is volunteer coaching like?
I love spending time with younger gymnasts. They appreciate the time I spend working with them one on one and they know that I care about them as a person, not only their success as an athlete. Helping younger gymnasts is a passion of mine because I never felt like I had someone to talk to if I needed something at the gym when I was their age.

What have you learned about yourself while coaching?
In my experience as coaching, I was able to learn that listening to the gymnast is just as important as correcting them. I am able to help them work through their fears and struggles, instead of them trying to figure it out themselves. I have realized through this experience I connect very well with children, and that has inspired me to go into the medical field to pursue a job in Pediatrics.

Picture
How did you find and why did you choose Stephanie Q Durham Photography as your photographer?
I found Mrs. Stephanie from one of my best friends who had her senior photo shoot earlier in the year. I loved every single one of her pictures and decided to book my own shoot.

What was your photoshoot experience like? What did you love most about it?
I will recommend Mrs. Stephanie to every single person that I know. She truly cares about you as a person and takes the time to get to know you before the camera is in front of you. We had a meeting before the photo shoot to discuss outfits, my interests, my passions, and what I like and dislike in pictures of myself. All of these things made the session much more enjoyable and smoother. I felt completely comfortable in front of the camera which is something that I've never felt before. She is the kindest and most humble person that I've met. I'm so glad that I got to work with her, and I wish her all the best in the future.

Tell us about your cheer life.
Cheerleading was a full 180 from gymnastics. This sport helped me grow as a person because I had to learn how to achieve success as a team and not rely on my own individual success. I’m very thankful for cheerleading because of how much it increased my confidence level in myself. Gymnastics was a very hard sport mentally for me, and being on my cheer team I was able to believe in myself and my skills again.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
My favorite memory with my cheer team has to be at the final championship in 2019. Our friendships grew much closer because it was the last performance we would ever have as a team. It was an incredibly emotional experience and I will cherish the memories I made forever.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have always had a love for helping children, and I devote a lot of my spare time to helping elementary school students. For the past four years, I have worked with a second and third grade teacher to create a hands-on learning environment with interactive learning experiences. I also worked with bilingual students to better improve their English reading skills.

How did you get involved in this?
My freshman year a second grade teacher reached out to me looking to receive help with tutoring her students. I immediately accepted and was very excited to work with her. I got to work in the classroom, as well as outside of the classroom helping them with their reading comprehension and math skills.

What do you think your strongest leadership skill is?
I have learned that one of the most important skills is listening. I've been able to hear what a person is telling me to know how to accurately help them in the situation.

Picture
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Spending almost 15 years doing gymnastics, I saw and heard about many heartbreaking experiences. As a junior and senior, I made it a goal of mine to help younger gymnasts work through the mental struggles they faced. I have always passionately spoken about the importance of mental health and how it directly correlates to an athlete's physical health. Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I am looking forward to spending time with my family and friends before I go to college. I know I'm going to miss them very much and this summer is going to be really memorable for me.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't be afraid to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation because that is what makes you
grow as a person.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I will have completed my undergraduate degree and be in medical school. During my summer breaks, I plan to do interning work at nonprofits that help give access to medical resources in third world countries.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
One of my favorite activities is playing the guitar and piano. My grandmother has taught me almost everything I know and it is something that I love to bond with her over

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent would be being able to play almost any instrument by ear.

3 Things on your bucket list
Going to an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, backpacking through Europe, and living in 3 different countries.

Who do you find inspiring?
MyKayla Skinner is an Olympic gymnast who was put in as an alternate in 2016, but trained incredibly hard for the next four years to be able to compete in the 2021 Olympics.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
One inspiring aspect about me is that I never give up on people. Holding grudges only hurts yourself, and it’s important to realize that no two people have the exact same experiences.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Putting a smile on someone's face isn't one of the simplest things you can do. Three kind words can change someone's entire day.

Tell us about your art work. What do you love to create, and what do you use to create it?
I make art without an end goal in mind. I always want my pieces to roll with the punches and show the progression of the work and the aesthetics are a bonus. I scored a 4 on my portfolio in the AP art program my senior year. Anything I can glue, cut, or collect will find paint and hit the canvas!

What is your favorite art piece you've created? We'd love to see a picture!
I made a piece in my AP art class that was meant to represent twin flames or soul mates. This was my smallest and least time consuming piece but it is honestly my favorite. It was fun to make and has, in my opinion, the best color pallet from my portfolio!

What type of jewelry do you make and what inspires your creativity in this field?
I mostly make wire wrapped crystal jewelry. There are no restrictions with what can be made using materials as malleable as wire on a base as freeform as natural stone. My main inspiration to create jewelry is to share my love for rocks with other people with similar passions!
I have my trio of pliers to do all the crafting with. Rounded for twists and turns, clippers for…clipping, and flat sided for just about everything else! If I’m working with a softer metal or brittle stone I wrap a bit of fabric around the pincers to prevent scratching.

What do you listen to while creating artwork or/and jewelry?
I’ve really been into dark cabaret and folk music genres lately so they have been my theme music for making!

What have you learned about business while selling both your artwork and your jewelry?
While selling my art and jewelry I have learned how to manage a side hustle and school at the same time from a early age. I learned I really like money!

Picture
Katelynn Lytle - Art by me!

What inspired you to go into nursing?
I took an Intro to Health Occupations class in 9th grade and my teacher was always enthusiastic about everything he taught. I hadn't been interested in much of anything career-wise but this class opened my eyes to a future I would enjoy and from there I was dead set on the medical field. I really settled into this career path my 11th and 12th grade year by taking as many medical classes as I could…

What are you most looking forward to while attending SLU?
I’m looking forward to meeting new people and starting a new chapter of my life!

What will you miss most about your home town?
I’m commuting to school instead of living on campus so I still have a few years left in my hometown! There is a flea market near my house that I am a regular customer at that I will miss when I move!

How did you find and why did you choose your photographer, Amy Weathers Photography?
My best friend got her senior pictures done by Amy Weathers and the final results were so unique and my friend was glowing with excitement after her photoshoot. From hearing about her experience, I felt confident Ms. Amy would make this fun and have me feeling fabulous! She did not disappoint and brought forward pictures that really felt like me!

What was your planning and photo shoot experience like? What did you love most about it?
Amy Weathers made the planning phase of the shoot a breeze! When we were taking pictures Ms Amy was all in with me. I loved her commitment to the shot! I was under a bush at one point and she got under there with me to get the perfect shot!

Picture
Photography by Amy Weathers Photography

What else should we definitely know about you?
I love learning new things!
As of last summer, I picked up roller skating at a skate park. I've taught myself to play the ukulele & bass guitar. It's still a work in progress but I've been learning to speak Russian.
And if you need it, you name it, I probably have it in my purse!

What type of music do you like to play? Do you have a go-to song? What is it?
On bass I like playing more alternative rock music but on baritone ukulele I am more of a folk person. I do! My go to song on bass is Fluorescent Adolescence by Arctic Monkeys.

What is the most unusual thing you have in your purse right now?
I have a dice set in my purse I keep on me for the chance I go play an impromptu dnd session! So maybe it’s a little geeky but it’s the truth and I can live with that!

Picture
Katelynn Lytle - Picture by my mom!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think my encouraging attitude and positive outlook are inspiring and I'm often told that I'm very helpful. Recently I realized that acts of service is my love language. I find so much joy in being able to help someone no matter the size of the task. This often makes me the go-getter of the group, which is a role I gladly take on. Something I do for my family and friends as my way of saying "I care about you" is making food for them and I'm quick to give a compliment, even if we've just met.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I have a passion for Refashion!
When there's something that I need, instead of buying it brand new, typically I'll just make what I need using things I already have. Taking items that are seemingly useless and giving them new purpose, is something that I practice and enjoy. Giving used items their full potential, outside of their intended purpose, extends their lifetime. For instance, my favorite skirt was bought second hand and as its begun to fall apart, I've kept it alive with patches and my own stitching. To this day it's still part of my wardrobe.

Anna Williams

Anna Williams – Ohio
Nomination by Andrea Williams
Photography by Maria Kirkland/12.9 Dance
Issue 57 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Anna is kind, smart and works hard at everything she tries. And makes the effort look easy. She is an Honor Roll student, plays piano, is involved in choir, band, theatre and several other clubs, all while focusing on ballet in the pre-professional company in her hometown. She manages her time so well and truly understands the importance of hard work, a positive attitude and taking time to relax and “just exist.”

What do you love most about ballet?

I love ballet not only because it keeps me active and busy, but because it is my home away from home. When I am doing Ballet all of my troubles and worries leave, it is my true stress reliever. I love everyone I dance with, I love the school, and I love creating art with movement.

What do you wish people knew about dancers that they probably don't?
We work HARD. Football, baseball, soccer etc. players, think all we do is twirl and jump. This is nowhere near how hard we work. We push our body to the limit, way farther than anyone else could.

What is your dance schedule like and what do you love most about it?
Hectic. My dance schedule is HECTIC. I dance six days a week during most of the year, and if we are preparing for a show, every day. But, crazy and hectic doesn't mean I don't LOVE it. It keeps me busy, but it also keeps me focused and I have to work just as hard to keep up with school and my other activities.

What is a favorite memory from dance?
My favorite memory of dance was when I first got accepted into "The Nutcracker." I cried happy tears. When it all ended, I had GREAT friends, and that is when I decided I wanted ballet specifically to be a big part of my life.

How did you find and why did you choose 12.9 Dance for your photographer?
I had been following 12.9 for a while through Instagram because one of my close friends was an ambassador. I did a session with one of my other best friends and the experience made me feel SO strong and confident. I knew applications come out once a year, and I was so excited when I read she was looking for her 2022/2023 ambassadors. I thought it would be an amazing experience to continue to represent the person who helped me feel so confident, so I applied and was accepted (along with those two amazing friends!).

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience is beyond what I could have imagined. I love all of the old and new friends and fellow dancers I have met so far, and all of the GORGEOUS photos that have been taken. I am quirky and anxious, and although I am good at ballet, at school am often told I am weird or too tall or too chatty. Those pictures help me see myself in a different light and I hope they help others realize they too can be confident and quirky.

How do you find time to do everything you're involved in? How do you stay balanced and focused?
The only other things I do are choir, band (I play the flute), piano and the middle school theater, including Muse Machine and acting in the middle school play/musical. Choir and Band practice are during the school day, and the concerts are later on in the evening, so I never really have to worry about those because grades come first. Piano practice is usually scheduled after I have my ballet schedules so that is always perfect. My piano teacher helps me prepare for the middle school play, and I have learned how to leave one, go do another, then come back if it isn't complete. My teachers know my schedule and as long as I am open, honest and upfront, they work with me! Time management is very important since ballet is such a commitment. I truly appreciate my study hall period and never take that time for granted.

Tell us about your music career. When did you get started and what do you love most about it?
My music career consists of Choir, Flute and Piano. I voluntarily did Choir and Band. When I was about five, my mom signed me and my brother up for piano lessons and said we could stay in it if we wanted but didn't have to after that first year. My brother and I decided to stay in piano and love it, and especially our piano teacher. I love the concerts. We get to show what we have learned through a certain period of time, and the growth is amazing, but she is very clear that mistakes are OK...and expected.

What instrument do you play in band and why did you choose it?
I play the flute! I chose it because the flute is very relaxing and elegant, just like Ballet. I initially wanted to play the saxophone, but my mom was in band when she was little and introduced me to a few instruments. She thought I "looked like a flute player" because my ballet posture pretty is noticeable, and I can sit up really straight. Turns out, she was right!

Tell us about your band and where you fit in.
Our band is small, and I am one of two or three other flute players in my grade. I fit in with kids who love band because ultimately, art is art, whether instrument, voice or dance. I have great friends in band, but everyone is truly nice and we are a good team.

Picture
Anna - My last piano recital. I was playing the theme song to The Office.

What have you gotten to perform in theater, and which has been your favorite? Why?

I have performed "The Great Gatsby," "Alice in Wonderland," "The Nutcracker," and the pre-Professional company Showcase, along with three amazing productions at my second, recreational studio. The pre-professional were basically at the Victoria Theatre, with "The Nutcracker" being at the large venue, the Schuster Center, both in Dayton, Ohio. While "Alice in Wonderland" had all of these really fun dances, "The Nutcracker" has my heart because of all of the traditional parts that everyone knows and loves (especially the Sugarplum Fairy). Getting to see the professionals so close up on stage, it just makes you feel special and there is something about the sound the pointe shoes make when they land on the stage. It's magical.

What are some of the clubs you belong to and what leadership roles have you been provided through them?
I am with Bethel Middle School Muse Machine. My first year was last year and I was a member, but next year I will be one of the Muse Machine Captains. This position helps organize what we see and how the trips to the theater are structured. We also get to help with the in-school performances, where outside professionals come in to perform and discuss what they do.

What is a favorite accomplishment in one of your clubs?
Becoming Captain in Muse Machine for this next school year is definitely an accomplishment. Our school is smaller, but over 40 people tried out, less than 10 making it!

What should we definitely know about you?
I work very hard to get everything I need to get accomplished done. I also try and find time for myself to relax or hang out with friends and family because they are my biggest supporters. Overall, I want people to know that being dedicated to your passion and being quirky sometimes means not everyone is going to get you. And that's ok as long as you continue to be kind and work hard.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to read and write, and am working on a children's book! It is about learning to not need or want to grow up so fast. I am hoping one day soon to have it published!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
How hard work pays off, and sometimes the hard work isn't what you want to be doing in that moment, even if it is your passion. I promise, you never regret it afterwards.

How did you balance your very high GPA with your extracurriculars and social life?

I think balancing my GPA with extracurriculars and social life was made easier because all my friends having the same academic strives as me helped me see how to manage everything because we were all doing it together.

What was your favorite volunteer activity with NHS?
We weren't able to do much because of Covid with NHS but helping put together the NHS Ceremony to induct the next inductees was rewarding because NHS is such a big accomplishment. We unfortunately couldn’t finish the service project because of timing in the year and the impact from Covid.

What is the National Technical Honors Society and what did you do in it?
The National Technical Honors Society is a group of students who strive in the CTE Programs provided by the school. The students apply and if they meet the requirements will get inducted into the society. We didn't get to do much as we would've liked to because of Covid.

Why did you choose Mamarazzi Photography for your photographer?

I chose Mamarazzi Photography because we knew and are friends with the photographer, which made the experience so comfortable and fun. But from knowing her and seeing her work I loved the way she captured her pictures and the fun ideas, props, and poses she uses. It makes you think you're not even taking pictures just living in the moment and her capturing those real and pure moments in her photos.

What was your preparation and photo shoot experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photo shoot experience was so much fun. I felt very comfortable and felt like I could just be myself. There were a lot of laughs the entire time, mainly because I couldn't get the serious face down right. Mamarazzi Photography captured some of the realist and in the moment pictures of me that I think is what made me love them so much.

Tell us about the PLTW Biomedical Program.
The PLTW Biomedical Program is hands-on scenarios and activities to engage students who are interested in the medical field. There are four classes you must take in order to complete the program. Your junior year you take the first two courses Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems. Then your senior year you take Medical Interventions and Biomedical Innovations. Once you complete the four classes, you take EOC Test which ensures whether or not you pass the program to receive your lab coat and the PLTW honor stole for graduation.

What is HOSA and what did you do as a club member?
HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is a community-service based club that volunteers for different things that are happening in our community. As a club member some of the things I did were volunteering to ring the bells for the Salvation Army, dressed up and passed out candy for the towns Trunk n' Treat, donated items for Brightwood Nursing Home, and raised money from our Sarris Candy fundraiser to buy gifts for 15 Brooke County children from the Salvation Army.

What was a favorite accomplishment in this organization?
In this organization my favorite accomplishment was we collected the most money for ringing the Salvation Army bells at different areas that we won there first place award. Also, we partnered with Vitalant to hold a scholarship blood drive at our high school, which the community, staff, faculty, and even students participated in the help with the blood shortage to save lives.

What is Bruins best and why is being selected an honor?
Bruins best is the selected top students in your graduating class. Students who are involved in activities, clubs, sports, and strive academically. Being selected is an honor because what you work for and have put into these last for years is honored by getting your picture taken and put on a billboard for everyone to see.

What did receiving the gold academic pin mean to you?
Receiving the gold academic pin means that I continued to work hard at my school work to maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA.

Tell us more about your goals in a sports career.
I hope to inspire younger girls that being a women in sports is rewarding. Just because there are not as many women in sports careers it doesn't mean that it isn't still possible to be in that career and be very successful.

What are you looking forward to most about college?

The most I'm looking forward to about college is the work study and experiences I will learn working in the college athletic world.

What will you miss most about high school?
What I will miss most about high school is the people and teachers that I will rarely get to see. Those relationships with them and memories that I now don't get to have again because I have now graduated, I will miss the most.

Jaycee Osina – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 57 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jaycee Osina is the type of girl that is every mom’s dream. Don’t let her small stature deceive you, she is a fighter through and through. She works hard to perfect everything she puts her mind to. Jaycee juggles school, FFA, Drill Team, and her friends unlike any other kid I have known. She maintains straight “A”s and well over a GPA of 6.6 to ensure she is ready for her college applications. She sets such high goals for herself and makes sure she has the right tools to accomplish them. She is an inspiration to all.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
Something extremely important to me that I would like to be interviewed about is my involvement in my high school drill team. I am currently serving as Spirit Leader on the Bridgeland Belles. Having the incredible opportunity to be a light for my team is something that I will forever hold dear to my heart.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I believe the most inspiring thing about me is my ability to find the good in every person I meet. I know a lot of people are fighting battles that we aren’t aware of, so being a positive light in other’s lives is a big part of my personality. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and compassion, no matter what.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
If I were to present a topic to my group of peers, it would most definitely be about the importance of mental health awareness. As someone who has seen the people close to me struggle, it is crucial that mental health is talked about more, and that resources are available to everyone.

I am so proud and so thankful to be a part of her journey. We can't wait to see where her future takes her.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about the hardships and joys that come from having scoliosis surgery. You should definitely know that I am a very hard worker and very determined. I'm very kind and I love to work with kids and help people.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present a topic on scoliosis and the surgery I had to have. It is very hard to have at such a young age. The pain, recovery and journey I went though was very difficult and long, but I wouldn't change it for the world. It made me who I am.

Haylee Nelson

Haylee Nelson – Montana
Nomination & Photography by Capture 1 Photography
Issue 57 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Haylee Nelson is an exceptional young lady with a very well thought out (and I might add very attainable) plan to become a commercial airline pilot. I have personally had the privilege of flying with her on the day we did her senior session. Take off, landing and handling strong winds that day, this young woman has defiantly got what it takes!!!
Haylee is a joy to hang out with, quick witted, easy to talk to, amazing smile, more energy the energizer bunny and she has the cutest freckles you've ever seen!!

Tell us about your love of flight.
My love for flying started during my 6th grade year when a fire started by my house and I watched airplanes drop water on the fire. I love the feeling you get when in the air. There is no prettier view than seeing the world from above.

What made you decide to be a pilot?
I decided to become a pilot when I was in 6th grade. I sat outside and watched airplanes dropping water on a fire. After that I went to Alaska for a summer and got to co-pilot a plane during a fly over fishing trip. After my first flight I knew I wanted to pursue flying.

What are you doing now to prepare for a career as a commercial airline pilot?
Currently I am a student pilot flying 2-3 times a week as well as attending ground-school. By the end of summer, I will have my private pilot's license at which time I will continue to work on my flight hours and work towards a dual engine license.

What is training like?
Training is so much fun! I have learned all parts of the plane, I’ve learned to take off and land the plane, I have learned wing-overs, how to stall a plane and recover. How to make an emergency landing in a field and what to do in case of an in-flight emergency. Ground school is the much less fun part of training but in order to do the fun stuff you have to have a good understanding of the basics.

What is the hardest part of training, versus the easiest?
The hardest part of training would be comprehending all the information about flying. When learning to fly a lot of things play into it such as the weather. You have to become a weatherman in a sense and predict what the weather will be like up in the air. There are also certain air spaces and depending on the aircraft you're in you can only go so high or low in elevation. The easiest thing about training would be actually getting in the air and putting everything you’ve learned and studied into play.

How did you find and why did you choose Capture 1 Photography for your photographer?
I found Capture 1 Photography when I had soccer pictures and he took our team pictures. He was so nice and funny that I went home, found his instagram and looked at his work and fell in love with it.

What was your photoshoot experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photoshoot experience was amazing! My photographer, Darrin, was so helpful and funny! He helped me with so many things! My favorite part of this experience was getting to show Darrin the flight school and getting to take him flying with me.

Tell us about how you turned traumatic things in your life into part of your drive to overcome them and achieve such a high goal.
I took my traumatic life events and used them well. I lived in uncertainty for a better part of my life, never knowing what was going to happen next and having to think 5 steps ahead, which is why I love flying so much. There is a level of uncertainty while in the air and I have to think 5 steps ahead. I took the trauma responses I learned and turned them into a future career as a pilot.

What were your biggest struggles and how did you overcome them?
My biggest struggle trying to become a pilot would be believing in myself. I second guess if I’m actually good enough to fly or if I have what it takes to become a pilot. This is still something I struggle with but I’m getting better at dealing with. I tell myself that I am good enough and I look back at where I started and where I am today, and it helps give me reassurance. I do have what it takes to be an airline pilot.

What is a favorite memory in the air?
My favorite memory in the air would be co-piloting a plane in Alaska and flying over a glacier and seeing so many things that so few people would ever get lucky enough to experience. This is my favorite memory because that was the moment, I knew I wanted to become a pilot.

Picture

What do you think that people who don't fly planes realize about piloting an aircraft?
I think people who don’t fly don't realize that flying isn't like driving a car, it’s more like learning a whole new language. There’s so many things going on that you have to watch and pay attention to so many things at the same time. You also have to learn things that you didn’t learn the basics to in school. You have to put 1,500 hours of flying in just to be able to put a job application in to become a commercial pilot.

If you could own any plane, which would it be and why?
If I could own any plane, it would be Pilatus PC/24 because it's a small private jet with all the bells and whistles! This jet is small enough to enjoy a quick flight, but also large enough that it doesn’t seem crammed. It also allows for there to be room for a co-pilot.

Where would you take your new plane if you could go anywhere and who would you take with you?
I’d take my new plane to Scotland, I've always wanted to go to Scotland. I’d take my Mom, sisters, brother, and my boyfriend.

Picture
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I have two topics. One would be to not allow the bad things that have happened to you tear you down, but instead turn that mindset around and chase your dreams. Turn the bad into amazing.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever done was living with a physically and mentally abusive biological father. Growing up and watching terrible things happen to my family and constantly living in fear showed me how I want a better life. Once my biological father was gone and no longer a threat to myself or my family, I started pushing to better my future and help my mom out as much as I could.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I’d say start doing flight school as soon as possible so you can get a true feel of flying. The sooner you start flying the sooner you can get your hours done. Even if you don't want to become a pilot it’s still an amazing thing to experience.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself being a commercial pilot in Utah. I hope to be married by then with a beautiful house.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activities are playing soccer and hanging out with family and friends.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
This was a difficult one to answer, I couldn’t think of anything as being a talent that I might have had. I asked a few people what hidden talents they saw in me and a majority of people said that I am very level headed. I see something that needs to be done and I do it. I have a way of thinking with my head and not my heart in order to complete tasks that need to get done.

3 Things on your bucket list
One thing on my bucket list is to meet Luke Bryan. Another thing on my bucket list is to breed munchkin cats. Lastly, I'd like to buy a teal Jeep truck.

Who do you find inspiring?
I get inspiration from my Mom. My mom inspires me because she works long days to provide for my siblings and I but still comes home happy. She also inspires me because she pushes and helps me follow my dreams.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I inspire others because I’m 16 and already starting my career. I’m showing people that even though traumatizing things happen you can still get threw them and better your future

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I’d like to say thank you for this experience. It has truly given me the opportunity to sit down and reflect on my life and my future and how far I have come and all of the things I have overcome. Thank you Inspiring Teens Magazine.

Brooklyn Moreno - Connecticut
Nomination & Photography by Arden Sage Imagery
Issue 57 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Brooklyn is viewed as a role model by parents and their young athletes. Brooklyn's a dedicated athlete and teammate. Brooklyn can be found training hard in the gym even during recovery from surgery following an injury. Brooklyn's also dedicated to her studies and is an honor student. For the past 4yrs instead of birthday gifts Brooklyn asked donations to be made to No Kid Hungry, Boo 2 Bullying, and the Sandy Hook Promise, raising several hundred dollars each year. This summer Brooklyn will be spending time volunteering at her all-star cheer gym to assist younger athletes with their development.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started All Star Cheer at 6yrs old. Some of the coaches I started with are still my favorites, they were fun but disciplined. I loved watching how amazing the Worlds level athletes were and wanted to be just like them when I grew up. I've learned some great life lessons a long the way about discipline, disappointment, winning humbly and losing graciously.

What is a favorite accomplishment as a cheerleader?
I have a few but since the day I started it was always my goal to make a Worlds level team. So, if I were to choose one accomplishment it would be making a Worlds team last season and competing on the Worlds Championship mat at ESPN Studios in FL.

Picture

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
Every year I am on a different team, as I gained skills I would level up. But my favorite memory would be the season I was on a Senior level 3 team, and we made it to Summit. Not only was it my first time competing at the Summit Championship, but I was center flyer that season, so it really was a dream season for me.

What do you think people who don't cheer don't realize about cheerleading?
The amount of training, conditioning, and practice it takes to prepare for competition season. As well as the athleticism and skill it takes to perform and hit a competition routine.

Tell us about the nonprofits you have given donations to rather than accepting birthday gifts. Why did you choose these specific non profits?

As part of give back project I printed flyers, handed them out with candy and accepted donations to Boo 2 Bullying. Boo2 Bullying is an organization that offers education programs to schools and parents how to give children the tools to connect with their peers positively.
I also raised over $2,000n for No Kid Hungry and the Sandy Hook Promise. Through donations No Kid Hungry is working to end child hunger throughout the US setting up summer meal programs, distributing grants to food banks, community groups and schools to assist them with ways to feed kids such as food trucks and meal carts.
Being from CT the Sandy Hook Promise was personal for a few reasons, Their mission is to prevent future senseless tragedies through gun safety reforms and Know the Signs program

Do you already know what will be the next one? 18 is a big year!
Yes, I do. I am a twin and my twin brother is working with an Army recruiter and plans to enlist when we turn 18. It's been his dream to join the military since we were little. I plan to raise funds for the nonprofit group Stop Soldier Suicide. This veteran led organization offers confidential free mental health and wellness care to service members and veterans.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I suffered an injury several years ago that I thought I got through quickly, but the doctors realized it was much more involved. It's called a Lisfranc injury, an injury to a ligament that required 3 titanium buttons and 2 tight ropes be surgically installed in my right foot. Lisfranc injury is common in football and usually career ending for most athletes. With the encouragement of my mom and some amazing coaches I creatively trained while I had to be off my right foot. I worked out with my coaches several days a week to keep in shape. Once cleared, almost a year after the initial injury, I was able to quickly return to working upper-level tumbling skills. It was the few people who supported, encouraged and believed in my ability to come back that kept me believing in myself.

Tell us more about your Bible study group.

My school had daily Bible devotions, but I wanted to do something that was more student-led. I talked to my principal and she helped me with finding resources such as a curriculum and lesson plans, and I made flyers to hang around campus inviting students to attend. We began meeting weekly on Wednesdays. For the first meeting, more than 25 high school students met with me in the library, from freshmen to seniors. A devotion leader or other staff member would supervise.

What do you do in your group? Give us an example of an average meeting.
We would meet during our lunch/recess period, so everyone would bring their lunches and meet in the library or a classroom. I would present the lesson I prepared on a particular topic: love, anger, perspective, faith, to name a few. I shared scriptures and encouraged everyone to share their thoughts and experiences on the topic. I wanted it to be a safe place for me and my peers to talk about the things that mattered to us.

What have you learned about your leadership style in the process of organizing and running this?
I learned that being a leader is not for everyone, and I had to dig deep and find my courage in order to do this. It also allowed me to practice public speaking, and speaking in front of a crowd is not always easy.

What is a favorite memory from your Bible study group?
My very first meeting is definitely a favorite memory. I was so amazed by how many students came, even students I did not know that well. Everyone was spread out around the room and listening and participating. Two of my mentors, who I really look up to, supervised the first meeting, and I feel like they were really proud of me.

How did you find and why did you choose Dallas McNeal Photography for your senior photographer?
Ms. Dallas is loved around our school. She does so many things, and she always has time to talk to you when you need to talk. During our senior trip, Ms. Dallas talked to my mom about an idea she had for a senior photo for me, but she was still trying to figure out how to make it happen. Since I love sports, her idea was to create one photo of me dressed in both my basketball and baseball uniforms. My mom loved the idea of me high-fiving myself so Ms. Dallas made it happen.

What did you love most about it your planning and photo shoot experience?
It was a God-thing: I was going to meet Ms. Dallas at the gym of the school, and I was going to change into my uniforms there. My mom suggested that I wear a button-down shirt so that I would not mess up my hair, so I put on a shirt, jeans, and my boots, not knowing that this would be my plan B. When we got to the gym, one of the teams was practicing so we couldn’t begin the sports shoot, but Ms. Dallas decided to get some other shots out on the property, and this became what we are calling my impromptu senior photo shoot. We got some really good shots that I used for my graduation announcements. We ended up taking the sports shots on another day, and it all worked out even better than planned.

Share your baseball career with us.
I started playing tee-ball when I was five, but after a couple of years (and being hit by the ball) I didn’t want to play anymore. I decided to try again my sophomore year, but that season was cut short by COVID. I came back my junior year, and our team made it to state. I played one last year during my senior year. I played center-field and was a pitcher for our team. I really enjoy catching pop-flies and fly balls.

What is your favorite achievement from baseball?
I received the Most Improved Player award my junior year. I was really proud of this since it had been so long since I had played.

What do you think your teammates will remember you most for?
I think they will remember me most for my athleticism and leadership. I always encouraged my teammates.

How long have you played basketball, and what position do you play?
I also started playing basketball at a young age, maybe around six, starting with the Upward Sports program in my town. I have played for more than ten years as a point guard. I started on the varsity team my sophomore year.

What is your basketball team like and how do you fit in on it?
My first year, I had some great leaders on the team. These guys were seniors and they led by example, and they welcomed me to the team even though I was only in the 10th grade. By their example I learned to take younger players under my wing and make them feel a part of the team as well. I play hard, and I am hard on myself. I am my toughest critic on the court.

What do you bring to the court?
Passion, excitement, and bravery.

What will you miss most about basketball?
I will miss the fans. They were so encouraging, and they kept us lifted up, both on and off the court.

What are you most looking forward to about attending Tyler Junior College?

I am looking forward to the college experience: living in a dorm, going to classes, meeting new people, and learning how to balance everything on my own.

What else should we definitely know about you?
I am a friendly, outgoing guy who loves people and wants to pour into people in the future through motivational speaking and/or coaching.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My parents tell me that I have overcome a lot of things in life, ever since birth (I was a preemie), and it is important to me for others to know that if I can make it through, then so can they.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would talk to a group of my peers about mental health. I have fought depression and anxiety, and I never want anyone with similar challenges to feel that they are alone in their fight. It is important for everyone to take care of their mental health, and to not be ashamed if they have struggles.

Tell us about your little boy - all bragging is applauded and appreciated!

My son's name is Beaumont, but we call him Beau for short. He is a red headed, blue eyed, mess that always has a smile, or smirk, on his face. He is just over 14 months old, and loves to play in water and read "Brown Bear". He is a daredevil and doesn't allow fear to stop him. Beau has brought an immense amount of joy in our family and I am extremely honored to be his mama!

What is the best part of being a teen mom?
I think the best part of being a teen mom would have to be the support system I have gained. Beau is a popular man back in central KY, and everyone adores his smile. I love that I got to experience our football season, homecoming, prom, and graduation with our little boy. My friends, family, and teachers at my high school really supported my decisions and poured their love into Beau whenever they saw him.

What was the hardest part about being a teen mom in highschool, and how did you get around it?
The hardest thing about being a mom in high school would be the social reservations. Being such a social person, it was hard at first for me to see all of my friends doing things, while I was home with Beau. I felt left out and like no one wanted to be friends with me because I had to change diapers and schedule feedings and naps. However, I found a great group of people that encouraged me and helped me all the time. Beau now has the best aunts and uncles that would do anything for him and me.

How did you maintain such a high gpa while having so many other responsibilities?
Quickly as I came into high school, I made the goal for me to graduate at the top of my class. From then on, I worked toward my goal and didn't make excuses. Once Beau came along, and I got in the heat of my extracurriculars, there was no time to waste. I knew if I wanted to accomplish my goal, I had to keep my head down and work. I surrounded myself with people who had the same goal as me and I was constantly challenged to be better.

What did you talk about at your high school graduation?
I was chosen to close out my commencement ceremony this year because of my class standing. In my closing and tassel ceremony, I reminisced about my last four years with my classmates, thanking my teachers for the memories I will never forget. I celebrated the accomplishments of my class, and gave a large amount of thanks to my insanely comical principal. It was just a great recap and final goodbye for my classmates and our families that I was honored to be invited to recite.

How did you find and why did you choose Lyndsey Boyd for your senior photographer?
I met Lyndsey when she worked at our family restaurant in our hometown when she was in high school. I have always looked up to her, so when she founded her photography business, I was dead-set on working with her. I applied to be one of her Senior Representatives and was chosen to represent her brand!

What was your experience like before, during and after? What did you love most about your photoshoot?
Lyndsey did a phenomenal job of making her senior reps feel special and beautiful, giving us the movie star treatment. Before our session, she made us all sweatshirts and cupcakes for our meeting date! The day of, we had our hair and makeup done professionally, and got to pick a variety of outfits and a group of locations! My session was WONDERFUL and she even got some pictures of Beau and I! After, she had a quick turnaround and I loved all of the pictures! My favorite part, was that she made a special playlist with my favorite music for the session!

Tell us more about your duties as an athletic training student aid for your state champion football team.
I assisted the head athletic trainer in our school district with our football team since the spring of my freshman year. We focus on acute, preventative, and rehabilitation care for our players. We go to every practice, game, scrimmage, 7on7, camp, etc. I deal with cuts, bruises, strains, sprains, and in unfortunate cases, breaks and more serious injuries. Basically, when someone gets hurt, I am there to help get them medical care.

What was it like going to the championship game with them and then winning?
I had a very lucky experience with my football team, as we graduated as Back to Back State Champions our junior and senior years, and the State Runner-Ups our sophomore year. It was always exhilarating and rewarding for our hard year at work. Our senior year, my boyfriend and I were able to celebrate with our son on the field with us!

What were some of the community service projects you did?
I led three big community service projects my junior and senior years that were very rewarding. My junior year, I led a first-responder sweet treat pack. My friend and I made goodies and cards with our peer tutoring special needs class and delivered them! I also was the Meal Pack Student Director for my districts meal pack during the COVID-19 Pandemic. My senior year, I was the Blood Drive Coordinator at my high school, and we collected the second-highest amount of blood in the state!

Where did you spend your most service hours and why?
In my time of community service, I have spent the most time volunteering in the children's classes at my church. I have been volunteering since the 6th grade, and I absolutely love working with those kids. Currently, my mom and I lead the Superstars Room for exceptional children. I spend most of my time there, because it has become a community for my family, where we love to worship Jesus.

What leadership opportunities did you have within those hours?
In my community service hours, I have had the opportunity to lead a First Responder Thank You event, I was the student coordinator of the blood drives at my high school, I have been on the leadership team at my church, I was the student director for my school district meal packing event, and I am a leader at a special needs foundation where we play baseball each fall.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a large heart for exceptional children. These children inspire me more than I can put words to. I have had the opportunity to peer tutor students at my high school, and work with a special needs baseball team in the fall of each year, and that is a main reason I want to go into education. I believe that everyone in this world can learn gratitude and compassion if you spend 5 minutes with a group of people who need your help.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I am passionate about the growth of others. I want to aid the children that need extra love to be able to soar, if it is emotional, mental, or intellectual. I want to be able to help people. I am a person who values the help I am given, and exerts the most help and love to others that I can give.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is definitely the birth and development of my son. Being an 18 year old mom is not easy, but my family and friends helped me soar academically and personally.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

My biggest advice for someone would be to build a good support system for whatever endeavors you want to continue with. Life is hard to navigate without the support of people, so find a group, whether it be friends, family, or a church community, that shares your values and goals to all be supportive.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I plan to be starting my first year of teaching, hopefully back in my hometown. My dream is to be teaching either 1st grade or Kindergarten.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I used to play softball and be involved in theatre! I am thinking of minoring in theatre education!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?!
I am able to tape an ankle in under 90 seconds!

3 Things on your bucket list
Go to all 7 continents, write a book, visit all 50 states

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom, Angela, and my grandma, Connie, to be the two strongest and most inspiring women I have had the pleasure to meet. They constantly put others before themselves and have both never failed to show others the worth they possess.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think the stereotypical association with teen pregnancy, and how far I am from that, is what brings the inspiration. I didn't give up, and I didn't let the stereotype define me.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Regardless of the outcome, I am honored to be able to share my story to others. I am not the traditional high school student, but I am happy I have had the experiences to share with my son.

What should we know about you?
I have been blessed to have walked alongside the most special group of children over the last 10 years of my life. These children all with special needs and unique diagnoses have taught me that feeling loved, valued, and celebrated should be a right for all children including children who are not typically abled.
These special friends have become a big inspiration for me and I have enjoyed spending my childhood and teenage years pouring into such deserving children. In turn they have given back to me tenfold what I have given them. They are my hero’s!

Tell us more about this endeavor.
I began working with children with life altering diagnosis back in 2011 at the age of 7. My two older sisters were involved in working with The Sandbox a charity that locks arms with families of children with life altering illnesses and diagnosis and it became part of what our family did.
My mom and two older sisters helped me get started and Mara Campolungo the executive director and co-founder of The Sandbox always found and provided ways at my young age back then that I could help and make a difference for these children.

What exactly are you doing with these children?
Through the 10 years of being part of The Sandbox I was able to take my experience and love for helping and mentoring children and blend my passion and skills for a very unique dance program, A Chance To Dance. This program provides inclusive dance experiences for atypical children. In The Sandbox I have mentored children with life altering illness/diagnosis by doing special activities such as lunch dates, painting parties, Starbucks dates, and any other things to make them feel just like any other “normal kid.” The Sandbox has held a special prom each year for our honoree children called “An Evening of Believing” and for this event I would help my mentee select a special dress and help them get their hair and make up done, after which we walk the “Red Carpet” and dance the night away.
With A Chance To Dance I provide support, instruction, encouragement, and dance alongside them. I strive to give them every chance of an inclusive relationship with typically abled dancers. For me it’s about the relationship first and dance second.

Give an example of time spent with these children that you will always remember.
My most memorable time with The Sandbox is when my friend and fellow mentor and honoree Abby had me my sisters and few other Sandboxers over for a day of canvas painting. We made so many inspiring and beautiful canvas paintings that we were able to give to others in The Sandbox that needed extra love and encouragement.
My most memorable time spent with the children at A Chance To Dance is the experience we had together with DanceON Chicago , where we were part of a documentary short film to highlight our program. We made new friends and bonded even more than ever.

What do you feel is your strongest leadership quality when in this position?
My strongest leadership quality while serving these children is definitely “leading by example “ just being an attentive, approachable, reliable and loving person the children can rely on I feel is my best quality.

What do you have planned next for them?
For my dancers, I am excited to see them spread their wings this year and dance onstage independent of me. My dancers have made such huge strides over the last 4 years in their confidence and skills. They are ready to do this!! I plan to see them flourish!

Share your dance story with us.
What do you love most about dancing? I love sharing my love of dance with others. Not only do i lvoe dancing for myself but i love sharing my love of dance with others. When working with my students from A Chance To Dance it really just opens my eyes to how including dance is and how much it brings others that may not be exactly like you together.

What types of dance do you do and which is your favorite? Why?
I do contemporary, jazz, lyrical, and ballet. My favorite style of dance is contemporary because of the music and the freedom you have when dancing.

What do you think people who don't dance don't realize about dancers?
People don’t realize how much prep work and training goes into dance. Dancers are athletes and have to align their creativity and artistry alongside tremendous strength, agility, balance.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment with dance?
My favorite accomplishment with dance is when I was awarded my very first choreography award this year with Endless Talent Dance Competition for a small group dance I created for A Chance To Dance. I was humbled and honored to receive this award.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a very “under the radar” type of person. I do things solely from the heart and my gift in return is the love and appreciation from the children I work and spend special time with. I often do not receive recognition for the things I do but that’s ok by me because honestly, that is the last reason in the world why I choose to do what I do. I believe being humble, committed, and loyal to the causes you are passionate about are enough reward for me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Our world without the conscious act of inclusion can make the atypical child feel worthless, unloved, and lonely. Through my time serving with The Sandbox Children’s Charity and A Chance To Dance, I see the importance of inclusion and impact it has for both typical and atypical children.
Imagine being excluded from countless childhood experiences and opportunities because of a disability/diagnosis. Without impressing the importance of inclusion within our community many will continue missing out on opportunities to make unique friendships with atypical children. My hope is the world will see we’re meant to be TOGETHER, we’re all “BETTER TOGETHER “.

Tell us more about The Sandbox Children’s Charity and A Chance To Dance.
The Sandbox as I mentioned earlier is a 501C3 charity that places focus on caring for children with life altering diagnosis and illness. The purpose of The Sandbox is to provide love, care, support for whatever the families may need 365 days a year. Whether they need emotional support, a listening ear, or someone to help as they are going through treatments or in the hospital with their child. I love the acronym Ms. Mara uses in The Sandbox it says everything, In The Sandbox we CARRE ( Caring About Real Relationships Empathetically). What I love most about The Sandbox is they have taught me that there is always hope even at the lowest part of your life. Keep believing , The Sandbox let’s kids and families know that they are loved, cared about, and never alone. I love that!

A Chance to Dance is a dance program specially created for the atypical child. In the program I have served as a volunteer leader, teacher, choreographer, and as someone who proudly dances alongside of them onstage. I attend regularly scheduled classes where I help nurture their love for dance while assisting the dancers in growing their confidence, self love, and dance skills. My goal is to get these children to the point that they always feel included and valued in whatever they are doing. What I love most about A Chance to Dance is the opportunity I have to spread awareness and the importance inclusion is to the atypical child’s social and emotional well being.

How did you find and why did you choose Brad Thompson with Alpha Prime Photography Charlotte, NC your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?

I found Brad Thompson through my mother who worked for several years with him. I chose Brad Thompson owner of Alpha Prime Photography because he takes great pride in his work and everything I’ve ever seen that he’s done is beautiful. I love to support small local entrepreneurs such as Alpha Prime Photography. My experience with Brad was fun, he always has an organic approach to his photoshoots and he allows me to be “me” during the process. What I loved most about my photoshoot with Brad was the quaint and charming location he chose to do my shoot.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished is getting through my junior year with a 4.0 GPA. I made a concerted effort to dedicate time for studying and spending time with a tutor.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Stay focused, never give up even when times get tough. Believe you can do anything you want to.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I see myself graduating from college with a major in health sciences and applying to graduate school.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite pastime not mentioned in my nomination is thrifting, going to museums and finding quaint coffee shops.

Do you have a hidden talent?
Yes. What is it? My hidden talent is creating new recipes in the kitchen.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. To go to Japan
2. Bungee Jumping
3. Cliff Diving

Who do you find inspiring?
Seeing people of different walks of life and backgrounds coming together for greater causes.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my passion for working with atypical children inspires others.
