Ashlyn So - California Interview by Zoe D’Angelo Nomination and Photography by Angela Wu Issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
The Nomination: Ashlyn started to learn how to sew at the age of 6. She then told her mom she wants to be challenged and she started designing her own clothes. Soon, by age 9 she was invited to fashion shows and she also showed during NYFW. Her imagination is untainted, and her style is avant-garde. She’s unafraid to experiment. Always cheerful, she is now designing and sewing custom gowns for women, teens and tweens.

How did you become interested in sewing? I started asking my mom to go to a sewing class when I was 5, and a year later she finally gave in to her fear of me hurting myself with the sewing machine. My mom signed me up for a sewing camp for one week. I fell in love and started making my own clothes at home. I was so happy. We would go to fashion shows and museums together and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Designing clothes made me so happy.
Who is your inspiration when it comes to fashion and why? I love Alexander McQueen and Ben Taverniti’s designs. But what really inspires me are everyday objects which I piece together and turn them into my design.
Tell us about your experience with NYFW. What was your favorite part of the whole day? My favorite part was helping the models get ready for the runway. I loved how rushed we were, and I loved the energy. I felt like it was a dream come true and I will never forget it.

If you were not designing and creating clothes, what do you think you would be doing? If I wasn’t designing or making clothes I would be drawing and making crafts. I always loved drawing and how I can just let my brush flow freely.
What stores would you like to have your clothes be sold in and why? I love making custom clothes for women and girls. I love the direct connection with them. I love seeing that SMILE from their hearts when they wear the designs that represent their personality. It gives me so much joy and satisfaction to see them happy.
Samaritan House - During the Live Auction at Samaritan House Main Event when Ashlyn was interviewed by the emcee, KTVU 2 anchorman, Frank Somerville.
Anything else you would like to tell us about? Yes, I would like to talk about my experience with Samaritan House. I like helping people. Samaritan House is a local charity and they help out those who are in need of food, clothes, shelter, and medicine. They have a Kid’s Closet which gives out clothes to kids in need. We donated 20 pieces from my ready-to-wear line and the Samaritan House staff told us that all the kids love them, and the clothes were given away in the first few days. I was so glad to be able to help other kids like me. Samaritan House also have an annual Gala to raise money. I offered my services for a custom gown and raised $4,000 at a live auction. I was so glad to help out and make a change. The people in need works hard and are not as lucky as me, but they deserve to have as much as me. They have had their rough times and we all need to help them out. I was so happy to be able to put a SMILE on their faces. I hope to inspire other girls no matter how old they are to reach their dreams.
