Kelsey Boggs – Kentucky
Nomination and Photography by Misty Boggs Photography
Issue 48 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kelsey Reese Boggs is a beautiful & kind young woman. This model/rep for Royal Photography can also be found volunteering with Project Merry Christmas & at the local Salvation Army. A member of the FBLA & Beta Club, Reese also enjoys being a part of the Unified Club’s efforts to ensure inclusion at ECHS. Reese has been commended by several of her teachers for her kindness, caring, & inclusive heart. If you’re eating lunch alone in the cafeteria it’s only because Reese hasn’t seen you, yet. She has a selfless heart as big as her beautiful smile & she uses them both to make a difference among others.

Tell us more about your love of fashion?
For me, fashion is about reflecting my personality through what I wear. I love the transformative quality-the effect that an item of clothing can have on the way people see you-and the way you might see yourself. There is something about the perfect outfit that can bring out a confidence in you.

How do you incorporate your love of fashion into your portrait sessions?
I love to stylize photoshoots around different outfits. I can pick out a particular item and visualize what I want my photos to look like.

Tell us more about being a model/rep for Royal Photography and a favorite photo shoot you did with them.

Bruce is a well-known, local photographer who invited me to join his team after a modeling camp he hosted. His shoots are always upbeat, fun, and unique to him/his company. Bruce has a way about him that makes me feel comfortable enough to be myself during our sessions. My favorite photoshoot is his annual “Friday Night lights” shoot that allows us to model our schools football jerseys. Think of it like a Spirit Week to kick off football season. It’s always a blast.

What do you do when you volunteer with Project Merry Christmas and at the local Salvation Army?
Project Merry Christmas is a charitable organization that distributes gifts to children within our County. As a volunteer we collect/organize gifts, wrap and hand them out. When working with Salvation Army you can except to be standing in the frigid temps, ringing bells outside of local businesses for monetary donations.

Kierra Flener - Kentucky
Nomination and Photography by Laurie Keen Photography
Issue 48 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kierra Flener is known in our small town as the all American Christian girl! Her smiles light up the room and her personality is as sweet as she looks. She is genuine nice to everyone she meets and so many look up to her. You know she is pretty awesome when one of her best friends is her little brother!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about confidence, and why it is so important for young girls and even older woman to have it.

What do you want us to know about confidence?
Confidence is more than a smile or a pretty face. Confidence is not worrying what people say about you. Confidence is being proud of who you are and where you've came from. Confidence is not relying on what others say to feel good about yourself. Confidence is looking in the mirror and being happy with what you see because we all were created fearfully and wonderfully made. Learning to be happy with who you are and your flaws is what confidence is all about.

Why is it so important for young girls and even older women to have it?
It is important for all people to have confidence no matter skin color, height, weight, skin texture, if you were glasses or not, teeth, eye shape and color, All of those things are what make you special. Every part of you is perfect and made in God's image so why should we want to change that because of what society/social media puts out as the perfect body and face.

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
You should know that I am an animal person, my dog Lucky has a very special place in my heart. I love riding backroads, going out on the lake, spending time with family and friends, helping others, swimming, and being outside with my brothers.

What do you like to do with Lucky?
I love to cuddle and play with Lucky. It's kind of crazy because he is just a dog, but he has been my best friend for 7 years and I don't know how I would've made it without him. He has always been there for me when I thought no one else was. I can always let all my worries fade away when I am with him. I don't feel alone when I am with him, and I know I always have him waiting for me when I came back home.

How has covid affected you spending time with your family and friends? Has covid made it worse or better? How?
Covid has affected me spending time with my family and friends because I wasn't allowed to for a while when the virus first started spreading and all the rules we had to go by. I did get much closer with my mom, dad, and brothers because we got to spend a lot of time together. I really loved that. I did miss my family that doesn't live with me. Also, I missed my friends so much. I am very thankful for technology during this time because even thought I couldn't see people in person I would facetime and text people all day. Covid has strengthened some relationships but also, I have lost connections with a few people because of not seeing them for so long. Sometimes it can be hard to keep a connection with someone strictly over the phone.

Tell us about your photoshoot/s with Laurie Keen. What did you love most about your experience?

Laurie Keen is the BEST photographer I have ever worked with! I love her so much and she is more than just a photographer to me. I know that I can bring my personal problems into her shop, and she will help me the best she can. She is my friend outside of when we are working together for shoots. I love how she makes me feel when I am around her. I feel like an actual model. What I love most about our time together is the endless laughs. You really just have to be there to understand how much fun we actually have.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers that I am very passionate it would be on helping other people. I am always looking for ways to make my friends feel wanted and included. Anytime someone needs someone to talk to I want to be the person they look to and feel safe with. I also enjoy helping the elderly and making them feel comfortable. If someone is having a bad day I want to be the person that puts a smile on their face. I want everyone to feel like a somebody.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I have kept my 4.0 GPA. I have never made a B and it has been very challenging in some classes. I did this by always going above and beyond.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say just be yourself and never set limits.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are to go skydiving, go to Hawaii, and to travel in a van or bus around the USA for a month.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

I think I can inspire others because I always want to make other people smile and make their day better. If someone is sitting alone I am the first person to be like, "Hey, would you like to sit by me?"

Kenna Anderson - Kentucky
Nomination & Photography by My Cup Runneth Over Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kenna Anderson is in the national honors society and beta club, she's a daughter, sister, aunt, student, athlete, Christian, victim of bullying, and a cancer survivor. In her own words, "I have faced much adversity in my 17 years of life, and I have learned how to overcome, conquer, and come back stronger than before. The trials I've faced have molded me into a strong, independent woman, who has a passion for others. I strive to live by the words of an Emily Dickinson poem: "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain".

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
My hardships that has made me into the person I am today!

What do you want us to know about your hardships and what you've learned from them?
The challenges life has thrown at me has taught me to learn from them and come back stronger than before. To rise above my insecurities and doubts and show others that hardships are only temporary but putting faith in yourself and in God will make you stronger and more prepared for the many others you will face.

As a cancer survivor, what would you want others to know about having cancer that they wouldn't if they never had it or was close to someone who did?
I would tell others to hold their loved ones a little closer, hug a lot tighter, tell them you love them every chance you can, and never ever take any time spent with them for granted because some may noy be as fortunate as I was. Surviving cancer has given me a second chance to do all of those things and has given me so many opportunities that I will forever be grateful for. Even if you have never experienced it or haven’t had someone close to you have it, life can change in the blink of an eye, so cherish each and every moment you get.

What are your roles in the NHS and Beta Club? What do you love most about being a member of these clubs?
I hope to become a class officer in each of these clubs! But the thing I love most about each of these is that I get to show other students and even younger kids that if you work hard and do your best at everything you do; you will be able to set an example for everyone, and become a role model for others.

What sport/s do you play and what is a favorite memory?
I have been a competitive cheerleader all of my life and have been on my high school varsity squad for four years, and sadly this will be my last year on my high school squad. My favorite memory would be all of the many times that I have been able to pick a girl up who is down and help her gain her confidence back and come back stronger than she was before.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I was given the opportunity to compete in singing, acting, and modeling. I have always struggled with my confidence, so this made me step out of my comfort zone, and I am so glad that I did. I was signed by Bratty Model and Talent agency based in California, and my life has definitely been a wild ride since!

Madison Winkler

Picture

Madison Winkler - Kentucky
Nomination by Penny Combs
Photography by Kustom Dezigns Photography
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madison Winkler is an outstanding academic achiever with a 4.3 High School GPA she has maintained since 3rd Grade and a 4.0 College GPA. She is dually enrolled as both a full-time college student and a high school junior. She is also an outstanding softball player who inspires all her teammates and also the younger players she coaches to be the very best in all that they do. She has a heart of gold and will do anything for family and friends.

Tell us about your softball career from where you started to where you are now.
When I started playing softball, I truly had no idea how much it would impact my life. I started with the Little Lady Colonels, a team that played locally just to have fun.  Now, I play for The Louisville Lady Sluggers 18u National Team and I play coast to coast. In November, I committed to the University of Louisville to continue the opportunity to play a sport I've loved all my life.

What has been your favorite experience and or accomplishment with softball?
My favorite experience/accomplishment was winning the TV pool championship in Colorado. It was a straight 7 inning game streamed on Flosoftball. We won 12-10 and I was 2-2 with 3 walks, and 3 RBI. We had walked out of the toughest bracket in the tournament undefeated.

Why has getting such a high GPA been such an important goal of yours?
When I was younger, having a high GPA was important because if I kept straight A's, I'd get $100. Now, my goal is to be Valedictorian and to go through my entire grade school career without making a B.

Picture
Photography by Kustom Dezigns Photography

What advice do you have for someone who wants to strengthen their GPA
My advice would be to learn how to study, even if you don't think you need to do so. School always came easy to me, but the higher level classes I started taking made it hard to stay confident in my work. I had to force myself to learn how to study.

What are your plans for college?
My plans for college are to go into Sports Administration and minor in journalism and entrepreneurship.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I've ever had to accomplish was committing to college. Due to recruiting rules, I wasn't allowed to talk to college coaches until my junior year. So when I was finally able to, it was as if the world hit me in the face. It was so new to me, because I hadn't done it since 7th grade, and many things changed in that time. Then Covid-19 came around and it stacked dead period upon dead period. I couldn't go on campuses or see coaches in person. I was recruited virtually. It made me lose confidence and made me so stressed. But in the end, I'm right where I've always wanted to be.

Picture

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
-In 5 years, I hope to be running my own business giving lessons here in my hometown. We have a very athletic town, but there are not many opportunities here to help the talent develop. I hope to be able to teach the younger players here and give them a chance to learn and grow. With my journalism degree, I hope to start my own blog and interview the kids and write them their own specific article. When I was younger, that always made me feel special, so I hope to give that feeling to them. A lot of the time, sports writers will focus only on the professional players, or collegiate stars. I want to be able to shift the focus on the younger players, so they have peers to look up to as well as professionals.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Griffin Joiner inspiring. Griffin is the assistant coach at the University of Louisville, but she played at UK and played professionally for the Akron Racers. She is from my hometown, which isn't very large. She showed me that you make your own future. You can choose to stay here, or you can choose to get out and make a name for yourself, while doing what you love.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

Plans for college

What are your plans for college?
I plan on attending Eastern Kentucky University. I would love to start my own business with architect and building houses or go into HVAC. I plan on working for Lowe's throughout college. By working for Lowe's I have the opportunity to make money while in college, but I also get to learn about the different things in the store that might help me whenever I start my own business.

What are you most looking forward to?
The thing I most look forward to is graduating High School and beginning a new chapter of my life. I feel as if I am ready for college and that I will excel in whatever I do. I am excited to be able to attend college and pursue my dreams.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I participated in Rogers Scholars, which is a program for upcoming seniors to provide opportunities to become leaders within our communities and also promotes community service. This program provided me with the keys to succeed in this world and the ways to become a leader within my community.

What did your duties entail in Rogers Scholars?
My Roger's Scholars duties included community service and being the leader of that service. Creating my own project to help the people within my community was something I will never forget.

What was a favorite leadership role in this service program?
I was able to create a "Cancer Care Basket Program," which included baskets of lotion, blankets, beanies, books, word puzzles and more for cancer patients within my community. This project was extremely close to me and my family as my grandmother has been battling cancer for the last couple of years. Being able to put a smile on the cancer patients and nurses was all worth the work.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?

I feel as if I could take sports with my peers very well because I watch so many different types of sports and know how they are played. Sports have made me the person that I am today and has been very important to me since I was a young boy. I am very passionate about sports and my respected teams. It brings out the competitiveness in me that could later on be used when competing against other businesses.

What is your favorite sport to play vs watch and why?
My favorite sport to play growing up is basketball. I always enjoyed being able to go outside and compete against my brother or friends. However, my favorite sport to watch is football. Football is so enjoyable to watch because you get to watch big strong guys go head to head and hit each other as hard as they can. There is obviously more to the game of football, but the hitting overall, is what makes it so exciting to watch.

Why do you think playing sports is important to teen development?
Playing sports is a huge roll in student development. Being able to participate in a sport or club and complete school work develops students to be able to use their time wisely. Sports also creates a team mindset for students by working together to accomplish one common goal. I understand that sports are not for everyone, but it has helped me in so many ways to become the person I am today.

Caleb Slavens

Picture

Caleb Slavens – Kentucky
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Chad Slavens
Photography by Kaymag Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Caleb Slavens has taken Martial Arts since the age of 6. Received a Blackbelt at the age of 13, while maintaining a perfect GPA, and being the top of his graduating class. The past 4 years he has spent his time sharing what he has learned through teaching youth classes in martial arts. He was selected and attended the 2020 Kentucky Governor Scholar Program.

Tell us about your martial arts career. When and why did you get started and where are you now with it?
I began martial arts 11 years ago. It has been my entire life, it is the reason I am who I am. I have taken this more seriously than anything else. When I was eight years old I began competing and have continued to do it throughout my career. However, I wouldn’t be here without my family. They are the reason I began, I remember seeing my cousin at a demonstration at a local event and I felt like I was in a trance and since then I have been in love with martial arts. Today I still have the same love as I did when I was a child. I still attend tournaments and push myself to do better every competition.

What is a favorite memory from martial arts?
Ever since I began martial arts there have been many incredible experiences, but I believe that achieving my black belt was my greatest accomplishment. Receiving my belt gave the greatest feeling and made me feel like I was on top of the world. It showed me that everything that I had been doing had paid off.

When & why did you start teaching and what do you hope to most instill upon your students?
I began teaching as soon as I got my black belt in 2016. I initially began teaching after I got my black belt, this was because I wanted to pass my knowledge onto other students. As I continue to teach, I hope to not only pass on the art itself but the values that come with it. I want to teach my students about respect and discipline.

Tell us more about your love of music. Where do you play and what does it mean to you?
My love for saxophone and music comes from my dad. He played saxophone in high school and I followed him, joining the band in my sixth-grade year. I continued to be in the band up until my junior year. I had to choose between my love for music and the possibility of getting ahead in college classes, and I chose the college classes. However, I still play saxophone in my free time and I still enjoy it. Music allows me to express myself by playing whatever type of song I want. I can show my emotion not through my words, but through the sounds that come out of my instrument.

What does it mean to be in the Kentucky Governor Scholar Program? How were you picked for this, what does it entail on your end and what are your goals with it?
Being a governor scholar means that you have proved yourself that you can multitask and adjust to a crazy schedule. It shows that you can successfully prosper in school and juggle many activities in your day to day life. The application process is intense and competitive, you must do essays and short responses of each activity, service, and awards. Then after becoming you attend a week at a college campus where you can learn about college life and how these schools work. Governor scholars should keep their values in check and live your life to the best of your ability.

Harper Lee Heffley

Picture

Harper Lee Heffley – Kentucky
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Kendra Heffley
Photography by Jim Tincher Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Harper Lee Heffley is an inspiration to all she meets. Harper was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at 8 years old. Her symptoms began long before that, but as her mother, I did not understand what was happening. In my search of an answer, TS, came up in a google search when putting in her symptoms and we went on the journey of diagnosis and treatment. She is now 17 and is thriving.
She is a National Teen Ambassador for the Tourette Association of America and goes to Washington D.C. each year in March to Rally for others living with Tourette. She speaks confidently and passionately for a cause that effects 1 out of every 160 children between the ages of 5-17, about 1/2 go undiagnosed. It is her mission to help get more people diagnosed sooner and get the medical treatment they need and to continue standing up for those with disabilities. She is an inspiring teen and I look forward to the future as she and other inspiring young men and women make a difference in their community and our world.

Tell us about Tourette Syndrome. What is it and how does it affect you?
Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects how my brain works. Since my brain does not work the same as other people’s, neither does my body. I often cannot control the movements and sounds my own body makes. I often will twitch my neck and my head, snap my fingers, or make squealing noises uncontrollably. Tourette’s for me also comes with other co-occurring conditions like, OCD, ADHD and Anxiety. Tourette’s is not the same for everyone. It is different for all of us. It is a silent struggle for some of us because some may think we are being over dramatic or are just hard to handle, but the struggle goes deeper than that.

How did you apply for the TS Ambassador for the Tourette Association of America and what does the role entail?
When I was younger, I felt like I was all alone because I knew no one else with Tourette. I barely understood what Tourette’s even was and my parents did not quite know either. My mom had reached out to a family friend who had a cousin with TS. She came over and met with me and she helped me understand that I was not alone and there are many other people with this disorder. Then when I became a teenager my mom found out there was an ambassador position open in KY for the Tourette Association of America, here I could be an inspiration to others. It required that I write and essay and apply online. Once my essay was accepted, I had a phone interview. I was excited to get the news that I was selected. I have had the opportunity as an ambassador to go to Washington D.C. for the last two years in March. I have had the pleasure to meet with KY congressmen and senators and help them understand the struggles people with TS are faced with and ask for their help by continuing the funding for the Tourette Association which continues research and medical outreach to diagnose and help more people. The most important role that being an ambassador entails is dispelling myths about Tourette syndrome and helping others understand how to be kind to people living with TS.

How do you advocate for others with Tourette Syndrome?

By being a part of the National Teen Ambassador program, it has allowed me to take my advocacy for this disorder all the way to Washington D.C. For the past two years in March, I have traveled to the capital to speak to KY congressman and Senators about what Tourette syndrome is and asking them for their support. I also advocate by posting on social medica to get the word out about TS to a wider audience. I also have spoken to a 3rd grade class to inform them about TS because a boy in the class was diagnosed with it and needed help explaining his situation to his peers and teachers. Helping others to understand and then be kind to others with differences is my passion.

What do you enjoy most about your leadership role in this?
There are many great things about having a leadership role in such an incredible organization. The thing I enjoy most about it is, being able to inspire others. Being able to advocate for others who maybe cannot advocate for themselves is important to me. I used to be very shy and embarrassed to even talk about my Tourette. I am proud to have a leadership role where I can talk about struggles I have faced and hopefully inspire others to not be embarrassed of what makes them different and be proud of who they are.

What is your special connection with special needs people and how does it connect to what you plan on pursuing after high school?

Since middle school, I was very interested in being a student helper in the special needs’ classroom. From my first day, I was inspired by everyone in there and knew I wanted to help those kids. Most special needs kids do not always know how to express how they feel or cannot say what they are thinking. I feel like I had that similar issue when I was first getting diagnosed with Tourette. I feel like I can understand when they are frustrated and know how to help because I have experienced the same frustration. Since helping in the middle school, I took it a step further and started helping with a special needs’ boy at church. When I got in high school I started being a peer teacher in the special needs room and now as a senior I am blessed to be able to work with extraordinary people that I love for half of my school day in Co-Op.

What is the biggest struggle people have with Tourette Syndrome, and how do you want other people to respond?
The biggest struggle people have with Tourette is understanding what it is or being insensitive to it. Most people only view TS as a disorder where you curse or say inappropriate things constantly without control. This is only the case in about 10% of people with TS, the symptom is called coprolalia. Many TV shows and media only portray this one symptom, but Tourette can be many things to those of us living with it. People with Tourette have tics and tics can be anywhere from snapping your fingers to screaming out loud. Tics are different for everyone with Tourette, we are not all the same. The word Tourette’s is often used as a punch line in someone’s joke. I feel like most people do not understand it, so they choose to make fun of it. I would like for people to stop using the word Tourette as a joke or calling us names. I, instead, would like for people to understand what it is and be more kind to anyone that is different than them.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished is going through my diagnosis and treatment of Tourette. There were many obstacles when it came to getting diagnosed. Not just realizing I had a mental disorder, but also finding the right treatment and medication for me. Also dealing with bullying and people not understanding my situation. However, I had a supportive family that helped me get through this and accomplish treatment and getting through my diagnosis.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The best advice I can give anyone is to always believe that you are capable of anything you set your mind to. When I was younger, I did not completely believe that to be true. I am where I am today because my parents told me I could do anything I set my mind to and they were completely right. Never give up on yourself because there are obstacles in your way. Anything can happen.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I hope to be graduating from Western Kentucky University with a teaching degree. I then hope to start teaching at a high school in a special need’s classroom. For a while now I have known my passion is to help special needs kids and I hope I can inspire them in a classroom one day.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite pass time is dancing. I have been dancing since I was about 3 years old. I danced on a competitive dance team for a few years and enjoyed every minute of it. I have done several solo dances in competitions and now I am dancing on my high school dance team. I enjoy entertaining a crowd and just going out in front of people and expressing how I feel with dance.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Art and painting are a hidden talent of mine. I enjoy being creative and drawing or painting for fun. I do not do it often but sometimes I like to just sit down and paint and relax.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers what would it be and why?
If I could publicly present a topic to my school or a group of my peers, I would do a presentation on Tourette Syndrome. I think it is very important for more people to know the truth about what Tourette is and how people should respect others with differences.

3 things on your bucket list
I have a lot of interesting things I would like to do. The top 3 would be
i. Traveling out of the country to Rome or Greece
ii. Working at Disney World, like my mom did
iii. Going on a family trip to Colorado

Who do you find inspiring?
Many people have inspired me in my life including my parents, my grandparents, teachers and my sister. However, one of my biggest inspirations is my mom. Both of my parents have taught me to be independent and think for myself, and they have made me believe that I can do anything I set my mind to. My mom is someone I can always go to and talk to her about anything. She has gone through hardships in her life that she opens up to me about. She teaches me that no matter who does not support me, I always have my family that will. She teaches me to be kind to everyone I meet and to always have grace. I could never be where I am today without my mom. She has always been understanding to me and everyone she meets. One day I hope I can be half the woman my mom is.

What about you inspire others. Why do you think you are inspiring?
I think what others find inspiring about me is that I am kind to everyone, and I am always willing to help anyone out with what they are going through. I am always understanding of someone else’s situation. I think I am inspiring because I do not use my situation with TS as an excuse but rather as a way to connect and teach others.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I have always had a busy schedule between school, sports, clubs and social life. I keep it all in order by always planning. I try to make schedules and plans and make time for my friends and family.

Ashton Short - Kentucky
Interview by Diamond Orin
Nomination and Photography by Shannon Short
Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ashton Short is an inspiring teen in so many ways. She has a kind heart and always wants to help others. She worked countless hours contacting her school’s athletic director, coaches and coordinated field times to start the very first girl’s lacrosse team in her school’s history. She also applied for and won 2 grants for the team for equipment and supplies. Ashton helps fellow students study, last year she created her own study guide for students in one of her dual credit classes, helping bring up their grades. She is a member of National Honor Society and volunteers throughout our community. Her contagious smile and giving heart make her an inspiration.

Photography by Ashton Short

Why did you want to start a girl lacrosse team at your school?
I loved watching my brother play the sport, and I wanted a chance to play as well.
It took two years to create the team, what were some setbacks you had to overcome?
There were some apparent setbacks, such as finding a coach and getting team members. The more intensive setbacks were getting field time and funding for the team. Luckily, I applied for a $3,000 equipment grant and I got approved for it. I was so fortunate to be able to present it to my team.

What motivated you to keep going when it came to making the team for your high school?
I heard of other girls from previous years who wanted a team but failed. I thought to myself, if not now then when? I had some connections to the coaches of the boy’s team and used that to best of ability. My hope was that I could be persistent enough that administrators had to listen.

Picture

What is it like knowing you are an inspiration to others?
I cannot take all the credit if I’m inspiring others. There are so many adults, ranging from teachers to coaches, who helped me become the person I am today. These influential people are the ones who taught me to do the best of my ability. I hope that if I am inspiring others, it’s for them to know they have the ability to make a change in the world. Especially being the captain of my team, it is vital to be a positive leader. If I am in charge of the girls on my team, then I want them to have the same leadership skills as me.

Why do you take time out of your day to help others? (I.e. dual credit study guide)
In my mind, I think, “If you have the ability to help others, why not?”. I saw a chance to help teach others a subject they were failing in. I have always been a sucker for volunteering, stretching from elementary school to high school. I think it is so beneficial to yourself and others when you help others. Overall, I think it’s in my DNA to have the want to volunteer and help people. It has always come so easy to me.
Picture
Photography by Shannon Short

How do you keep a positive and kind attitude while tackling so much throughout school and extracurricular activities?

Growing up, many adults asked me this. I think it is so important to take care of your mental health through difficult and stressful times. I believe it is crucial to look at your life and be so grateful for everything you have. There are so many people out there who don’t have half the things you might have. I just take a look at my life and be so thankful for those who have sacrificed things for the betterment of my life.

Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Bailey Haynes inspires those around her by her strength, determination, and independence. She is her own person that walks to the beat of her own drum. What sports do you play? What is your favorite memory from them?
My main sport is basketball and I have been playing that since I was in the 3rd grade! I have also played soccer and tennis. My favorite memory from basketball was the time my AAU team placed in the platinum bracket for our pool in one of the largest AAU tournaments in the country!

How has the COVID 19 pandemic impacted your sports seasons? Are you still able to practice?
COVID-19 hasn’t affected my high school season yet since it is a winter sport, however we did have to cancel our Summer basketball schedule and cancel all of our workouts during this time. In addition, we have not been able to get in the gym to shoot or utilize the weight room on our own time.

Picture
Photography by Kristy O'Bryan

How have you been dealing with the pandemic disrupting the beginning of your senior year and all the changes that come with that?
I think the most important thing to remember during all of this is that everyone, not just seniors/students, are having to sacrifice things for the well-being of our community. Of course, I get upset when I think about the possibility of missing my last first day of school, senior homecoming and prom, senior basketball season and possibly graduation, but in the end, I am thankful for my health and my family’s health. If missing these events means that I am doing my part to help keep my community members healthy and safe, then that is rewarding in itself.

How do you balance your schoolwork and athletics? What are your tips for others trying to do the same?
I balance this by just thinking about how important both are to me. The best advice I can give to others who may be possibly struggling with this is to always set designated times for each and always know what you have on your schedule between sports and school so you know that you are getting done what needs to be done. It is also important to work really hard during the school day and try to get everything finished in order to have the maximum amount of time after school to focus on your athletics.

Picture
Photography by Kristy O'Bryan

What are some goals that you have for your future? Do you hope to play sports in college?
In the future, I plan to attend college and major in biomedical sciences. With that degree, I plan on going to medical school and hopefully pursuing a career in Dermatology. One thing I pride myself in, is working hard in school and my athletics so that way I have both options when it comes to deciding what school I want to attend. I would like to play sports in college, but I know I have academics to fall back on just in case that route does not work out for me.

I decide to begin a professional acting career 2 years ago. I felt like I could have opportunities in the industry, so I talked to my parents about it. Then, we began looking for roles to apply for and I was cast in one. Then, more followed and 2 years later, here I am - an actor.

As a Boy Scout, what are some community service activities you do?
Our troop does a variety of activities each year. Some of those are trash pick-ups around our community; filling the local blessing box with food and items that people need; serving meals to Veterans and also, placing flags on Veterans' graves each year.

Why do you enjoy being a Boy Scout?
I love being outdoors - camping, hiking, fishing, campfire & hanging out with my buddies. We get to have a ton of fun while learning great skills. We do many activities to earn our merit badges and work toward the rank of Eagle Scout.

3 Things on your bucket list.
1. I would love to visit all 50 states and learn about their history. (History is my favorite subject).
2. I would love a military tank and be able to drive it.
3. I would love to go scuba diving and do some treasure hunting.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
It gets crazy sometimes and hard to focus. We try to keep a calendar with all the activities, so we do not overbook for same dates. I try to space my acting jobs out, so I can focus on each one and give it 110%. We make sure some days to have some down time and also time to do my Boy Scout activities.
Plus, my Mom is my manager and she is awesome at all the scheduling and keeping us on track for all my activities.

Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Haley Page is a bright student and athlete she gives her all at practice and is always making someone smile. She is very outgoing and friendly. When she gets set on something at practice she doesn’t stop until she’s done, she’s very determined.

What or who inspired you to start cheerleading? Who are some cheerleaders or athletes that you look up to?

In elementary school one of my friends wanted me to do an all-star team with her and I was like okay that sounds like fun and so I went and I loved it and we had one of the scariest coaches, O’Shea Parker however he has pushed me to be the best I can and he’s still currently my coach and helps with my high school team. A few cheerleaders I look up to are Gabi Butler, Morgan Simianer, and Whitney Hollman.

How long have you been cheering for? What is your favorite memory from your time cheering?
I started cheer when I was in 5th grade and haven’t stopped! My favorite memory from cheer is this year in February our team got a bid to go to nationals in Orlando at ESPN Wide World of Sports complex and we worked so hard and received 10th in the nation!

How did the global pandemic impact your cheerleading schedule for the fall? Is there a time that you went without being with your team? How did you push through that?
Currently the global pandemic has impacted many cheerleaders throughout the world. My team was supposed to attend UCA cheer camp at Panama City Beach however that got cancelled. Teams aren’t allowed to stunt because we are so close and, in each other’s face, but it sets us back because stunting is a big proportion of our scoresheets. There was a time period that we weren’t allowed to practice or tumble together and that was very challenging , however my teammates and I have been working on the little things such as sending cheers out for sideline and making sure we stretch outside of cheer for our jumps.
Picture
Photography by Renee page

What helps you balance your academics and cheerleading? What would be your advice to others who are trying to balance many things like you?
My coach is a big help in balancing these two for me personally. She makes sure we are on top of it in class and that we are doing our very best. My advice to other who are trying to balance is to do as much work in the classroom, so you don’t have much once you get home.

What are some goals that you have for your future? What would you like to be when you are older, and would you want to cheer in college?
I have many goals for myself in the future such as becoming a cheer coach as a side job of being an Orthodontist and having a happy family. I would love to cheer in college hopefully at Western Kentucky University but I know I have to work extremely hard but nothing is impossible!

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hard seat thing to accomplish or overcome in cheerleading is an injury. I broke my ankle in 8th grade and was out for a little while and once I got cleared it took time to get back into tumbling and going from no weight at all to bouncing and landing on it. After a lot of workouts and stretching I came back and was ready and became better.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Advice I would give to someone who wants to be in my place today is to never give up, always try your 100%, be the best you can be, and don’t make excuses for yourself. You control everything about you and if you want something there’s nothing stopping you except for yourself.

Picture
Photography by Red Elephant Studio
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I see myself halfway through medical/dental school getting ready to become an Orthodontist. Working extremely hard to do the best I can and hopefully move into a house with my spouse.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activity is to play with younger kids, we usually have a mini camp and the kids  and I love each other. I also take a class at my Highschool that let’s me go to the elementary school to help educated a class. The students adore me and always say good afternoon Miss Haley and give me big hugs!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I don’t really have a hidden talent or at least I haven’t discovered it but I’m good at tumbling!

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
It would be about cheerleading, mathematics, sports, and/or dental hygiene because I’m very passionate about these things and I could never get bored of talking about them!

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list is to stay in the medical field or become an Orthodontist and not give up, go noodling, I think it would be fun to catch a big fish, and to grow up and be happy with life and not struggle.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find many people inspiring however my mom is the women who has always been my number one supporter and will always have my back. She’s always looking for the best interest in me and leading me in the right directions.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe as a senior future possible captain on my cheer team and as co co-captain my previous year many of the new girls look up to me and they strive to be as determined as me. They love to show me their new skills and we get so excited for each other. They know I’m always rooting for them just as much as they are rooting for me.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Thank you so much for this opportunity!!
