What should we know most about you?
I have a passion for gymnastics. I have been competing in gymnastics since elementary school. I recently injured my elbow before the start of my senior year. I thought my season was ruined. All I had worked for would not even happen. I was able to push through and compete 6 weeks before the doctors thought I could. I competed at the first home meet in all 4 events. I have had to work hard to get my old skills back from being off for so long.

Tell us about your gymnastics career. What got you started and what do you love so much about it?
We got a trampoline when I was younger, and I just started teaching myself some jumps and flips. My mom asked if I would like to try gymnastics versus dance that I had done for 3 years. I decided to take some classes and fell in love with the sport.

What event do you spend the most time practicing, and which is your favorite? Whys for both please.
I spend the most time practicing floor and that’s because I would say it’s not my best event. I love floor but bars is favorite. I would say it’s my favorite because it’s always been my favorite to watch and once I started to get pretty decent at it I fell in love with it.

What is the hardest thing about gymnastics that non gymnasts may not realize?
The hardest thing in gymnastics is probably the mental part of it. it’s all a mental sport and your mind controls your body so when you get a mental block you have to physically force your body to go against what your mind says to do.

What is a favorite memory / and/or accomplishment with gymnastics? My favorite memory is having my best friend make it to regionals our senior year and my favorite accomplishment is being able to compete my senior year when we weren’t sure if I was going to.

I am passionate about being a role model in my work and gymnastics. I want to push people to be their best even when it’s not in your favor.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I am passionate about gymnastics and coffee. I help teach elementary and preschoolers in learning the skills to be a competitive gymnast. I also love coffee. I have been a barista for 4 years and enjoy teaching others about a great cup of coffee.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about coffee and being a barista?
I would say the freshness of the espresso really matters I really care of about each cup of coffee I make.

Is this the family owned business mentioned in your nomination?
Tell us more about it. My family owns two businesses and I work at both. My goal after high school it to assist my mom at our pier and boat lift business. I will still help at the coffee shop as needed.

How many younger siblings do you have and what is your favorite thing to do with them & what is a family tradition with them that you hope to keep going forever?
I have 2 younger and 1 older. We love to travel!
Going to the dunes in our Jeep :)

We see your aunt is also your photographer! How fun What was planning your senior photo shot like? What did you love most about it?
We’ve done a couple and she so fun and really cares. She comes up with great ideas that fit my personality.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished is coming back from an injury that really played a role mentally is which we didn’t know if I was able to compete and then I did and did really good all season.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard—find your passion and do it. You can be successful at anything you have a passion for.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Where do I see myself in 5 years, I see myself in 5 years being a manager for The River and helping my mom run the pier shop. I’m hoping to help open another coffee shop somewhere out of state and it be successful.

What would you most like to talk about?
I would love to talk about my journey of playing multiple sports. I have been playing football since I was six, and basketball since I was eight. I have played rec baseball, soccer, track, and have now discovered that I love lacrosse.

Wow that is a lot of sports to keep track of! Which is your favorite and why?
Football is my favorite. It comes to me easy. I have an eye for the field.

Tell us about your football career first since that is your longest running.
My parents signed me up since I was always carrying around a football. One thing I love about football is all the new people I get to meet and have become friends with over the years. I play on all sides of the ball. My main positions are Corner and Wide Receiver. I currently play for Riverbend High School.

What are you looking forward to most about starting your football training at Bridgewater College?
I start training at Bridgewater College in August. I am looking forward to the next level of competition. I expect to see a difference in the coaching, plays, and amount of training. In high school you are limited in what you can do in a day.

What is a favorite memory from one of your sports?
On my football senior night, I got an interception, and I can remember looking in the crowd and seeing everyone so hype.

What is a favorite accomplishment from one of your sports?
At the age of 8, my AAU team won the National Championship. Not one team scored on us the whole season. As a junior in high school, I was selected to be First Team All District and Second Team All Conference.

Which sport is the most time consuming and why?
Football definitely is with the amount of time on and off the field. Studying plays, lifting weights, and maintaining good grades.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk to them about the end result of playing multiple sports. The goal is to play at the next level and with hard work and dedication anyone can accomplish this goal. It won’t always be easy, but it will definitely be worth it.

What led you to and why did you choose Julia Aguilar/Captured_Time Photography for your senior photographer? What was your experience like in the planning and process? What did you love most about the photoshoot?
She has been taking photos of our football and basketball team all season. She takes the most amazing action photos. I liked everything. This was my first time doing a photo shoot and she made everything smooth and easy.

What will you miss most about high school?
I will miss the sports and working out with my teammates. I will also miss seeing my friends daily.

What is something your high school is known for or a tradition you participated in that you will always remember?
I will miss participating in the Chic-Fil-A Bowl during football season. It's Riverbend vs Chancellor. Our community fills the stands at this game.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My love for God and family. I firmly believe that God has a purpose for me. This is why He gifted me with the ability to be naturally athletic. This is His way of letting me shine my light to others. My family has encouraged me to work hard and strive to be great. Being average is not an option on my journey.

What is your favorite thing to do with your family?
Playing board games, especially Monopoly, because my family is super competitive.

What is a favorite family-time memory?
During the holidays, when all my siblings come over and we sit around playing games.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Getting an offer to play football in college. I committed myself to my schoolwork and workouts.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't slack off in your freshman and sophomore year. Every day you need to be focused.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to have my degree in Cyber Security and putting my degree to work.

Taylor Evans

Taylor Evans – Maryland
Nomination & Photography by Heather Soskin Photography
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Taylor joined my class of 2022 senior model team this year and has been such a blessing to get to know. She is always smiling, a natural beauty, is super kind and has a down to earth, genuine good heart. In school, she is in the National Arts Honors Society and FCA and during her personal time, she is an active participant in her local YoungLife and shows dairy cows and pigs with her 4-H club. Taylor plans to major in the field of Business Administrations after high school and is a total inspiration for any young girl to look up to!

My favorite thing about the 2022 senior model team with Heather Soskin Photography is getting to do something that is out of my comfort zone. I have never done anything like this, taking photos along with girls I hadn't met prior, is something new for me. However, this experience has helped me become more confident in myself. I love that the girls on the model team have become friends. There are 7 girls on the model team, and multiple of us go to different schools. Although we have different styles, it is cool to come together and do something so enjoyable.

My favorite memory on this team so far is when we got to pick out chocolates from a local chocolate shop, and Heather got them for us. We were able to take photos with the candy that we picked out, and eat them. It was super fun to be there with all the girls, as well as Heather.

Some of my roles in this model group are helping pick out ideas for possible places to go and take photos, as well as helping with the poses when we are out taking photos. We also participate in charitable events that heather has set up for us in the community.

The Howard county 4-h Dairy club has helped me grow into the person that I am today. I have participated in 4-h since about 4th grade. In my first year of 4-h, the pigs that I was raising to show at the fair, unfortunately died in a devastating accidental barn fire. This was a rough start to this 4-h for me, but families in the local community donated 2 pigs to me, so that I could still show animals at the fair.

4-H has helped me understand the importance of community, friends, responsibility, and so much more. However the most important thing that I've learned while participating in 4-h is that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Within my time in 4-h I have had many trials, but sticking with it and staying with something I love has helped me understand that things do get better.

If I was going to debate the topic of agriculture with anyone, my opening line would be, “ Although you may believe that agriculture is not needed in our society, the things that you use on a daily basis wouldn't exist.”

My favorite accomplishment in 4-h was getting first place in Dairy showmanship. This is when the judge looks at how good you are at showing your animal, as well as how well you groom and prepare your animal for show. This is something that was important to me, and something I will never forget.

I think that the leading cause of anxiety and depression among teens my age is comparison. Social media is a scary place, and makes people believe things about others lives that aren't true. I think that girls are so guilty of comparing themselves to that model, or a friend they think is “prettier” than them. I think that another key component is the school system, and teens feeling overwhelmed with the amount of pressure that is put onto them.

Something that I think can be done to help the anxiety and depression crisis is to help promote the realness of life, rather than just “perfect” photos. I think that also putting less pressure on teens about school can also help. I do think it's important to do well in school, however the insane amount of pressure that is put onto teens can be too much.

In FCA, I am a member. FCA stands for Fellowship of christian athletes, and at my high school, FCA is one of the biggest clubs that we have. During our meetings we have a study about a specific lesson, and peers from my grade. We also participate in athletic games in the gym during some of our meetings. It's a super enjoyable experience!

YoungLife is an organization that I participate in outside of school. In YoungLife, I help plan events such as club, and trips. Being in YoungLife has helped shape me into the person that I am today, and high school being such a hard time for me, Young Life has given me that outlet to feel included in something. My leaders have become my best friends and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I plan to go into Business marketing after high school. I would like to eventually own my own boutique. This has been a dream of mine since I was young. Going into boutiques my whole life, it inspired me to open my own boutique. I love clothing and style, and opening my own boutique is definitely a goal of mine in the future.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would love to be interviewed about perseverance and what it looks like to accomplish your goals, even in the most challenging of circumstances. I was adopted from a rural town in Poland six years ago. When I came to the United States, I did not speak any English, and I was adjusting to a new family and a new culture. I did not let that discourage me. I was determined to find joy in the journey. I want others to know you can accomplish your dreams if you possess the desire and perseverance to do so.

Tell us more about this process. How did you come to live in America at 10?
I was 10 when my mother adopted me and my sister. I lived in an orphanage my entire life, as both of my parents died when I was an infant. My mother flew to Poland to get to know us. After our court hearing, we left Poland and I flew on a plane for the first time. We landed at the airport on November 7, 2015. I was surrounded by family members with greeting signs, balloons, and plenty of hugs. I didn’t speak their language, so all I could do is grin from ear to ear and hug them back.

What was your biggest struggle with adjusting and how did you overcome it?
The biggest struggle was the adjustment to a new language and culture. I was so fortunate to be blessed with the most wonderful teachers, Mrs. Lisa Holland, and Mrs. Jennifer Greer. They dedicated their days to helping me learn English and acclimate to my new school. I will be forever grateful to them. In the rural community where I lived in Poland, we walked dirt roads to school and church, and most of the food we ate came from our garden. I had to adapt quickly to commuting to school, using technology resources, and familiarizing myself with fast food.

What was your first big accomplishment here where you knew everything was going to be ok?
The first moment that comes to mind occurred during the school Christmas pageant in December of 2015. I had only been here for a month, but nonetheless, I stood on stage, and in front of thousands of parents and students I sang “One in a Million” from the Flakes soundtrack. The lyrics were so perfect for the moment, “You’re one, one in a million! No other ‘neath the sun. You’re one, one in a million! And the reasons you’re special are a million in one.” In that moment I thought, nothing can hold me back. I can do this!

Do you travel back at all and if so what is it like?
I have not traveled back to Poland since I left in 2015. However, my Christmas gift this year was a passport, so I am hoping to travel to many places, including Poland. The caretakers of the orphanage I lived in are wonderful people and I would love to visit them and thank them for taking such wonderful care of me. I lived in a very rural farming community in Poland, and I would love to visit the cities and soak my feet in the Baltic Sea. As a student of culinary art, I am also looking forward to the food.

What would you say is a big difference between Polish and American teens?
I would say there are more similarities than there are differences. Of course, my situation was unique, but the thing that stands out the most to me is the pace of life. In Poland, after school activities were rare, and consisted mostly of playing soccer. In America, everything seems to move at the speed of light. Having multiple extra-curricular activities as a teen is normal, and social media use is commonplace. I didn’t have a phone or a computer in Poland. While I enjoy those luxuries now, I can say with certainty that I am also comfortable without them.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination does not cover?

I feel so blessed with opportunity. I want to experience all the joy life has to offer. I have been fortunate to play a variety of sports, but my favorites are sailing, cheerleading and golf. I began playing golf at age 10 and I haven’t put my clubs down since then. I also began sailing at the age of 10, and I’ve become quite skilled at it. All these activities were new and unfamiliar to me. However, I didn’t let fear stop me from discovering some of my greatest passions. I want to inspire others to follow their dreams!

Where do you sail in Tennessee and what do you love most about it?
I learned to sail at the Privateer Yacht Club in Hixson, TN. I was absolutely terrified the first time I sailed in high winds and was hit on the head by the boom. Since then, I’ve learned the benefits of awareness and good communication before making any maneuvers. I love sailing because it combines the elements of freedom, excitement, and competition. The feeling of being on the open water with the wind in my hair, combined with being responsible for my vessel is empowering. I never dreamed I would sail, but now it is one of my favorite sports.

Tell us about your cheer team and experiences on it.
I have loved to dance, flip and twirl since I was a toddler. I never heard of cheerleading until I moved to the U.S.; but once I discovered it, I was hooked. I began gymnastics lessons in elementary school, and then tried out for the squad in middle school. I served as team captain my 8th grade year. We cheered for our teams and competed at NCA events in Nashville. Stunting is my favorite physical aspect of cheer, and that is where I focus most of my effort these days.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
A highlight of my experience was cheering on the Atlanta Hawks court in State Farm Arena. Following a Hawk’s game, my school was invited to play on their court, and of course, we were there to support both our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. The energy in the arena was contagious. The sights and sounds were magical, and it helped us perform even stronger as a team. It was our moment to shine, and we made every second count. I also enjoyed pep rallies, because that is when we could get the entire study-body involved in supporting our school teams.

We would love to know most about your golf career. How did you get involved and what do you love most about it?
My golf career began when my mother was shopping for a tennis racquet. As she shopped, I explored the store’s golf section, hitting golf balls into the cup on the artificial green. I fell in love with golf right then and there. I purchased a beginner set of clubs and my mother signed me up for lessons with the First Tee organization. From there, I went on to play in the PGA Junior League and on my middle school and high school teams. Golf requires patience and confidence. Those are traits I have, but also want to continue developing.

What is a favorite accomplishment from golf?
My favorite accomplishment might sound trivial, but it occurs each time I step onto the course. Golf can be intimidating, even to a seasoned pro. And while I do measure some success based on my score or rank in a tournament, I am more fulfilled by acknowledging my resolve to confidently participant in a male dominated sport. In junior high, I was the only girl on my team, but I held my own. I seek continuous improvement in developing my technique, strength and power with every ball I hit at the driving range and every round of golf I play.

Where has been your favorite place to play, and where would you love to play if you could pick any golf course in the world?
So far, The Osprey Point Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina has been my favorite course to play. The scenery is beautiful, and there is plenty of wildlife to observe throughout the course. The last time I was there, a large alligator was basking right in the middle of the cart path. Like most golfers, I dream of playing at the Augusta National Golf Club. I would also be thrilled just practice and work on my skills at Bubba Watson’s Pensacola Golf Center. Watson is my favorite golfer and a great source of inspiration for me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I want to talk to my peers about being more present and connected. Life is about relationships. Spending quality time with people you care about is important. It’s also important to connect with people in your community through the gift of your time and random acts of kindness. We are created with a purpose, and to fulfill that purpose we must invest our time and energy. I would encourage all my peers to be intentional with their time. A phone call, a hand-written letter, a walk to visit a neighbor, all these things could change the course of someone’s day.

Why did you choose Beverly Reid Photography as your photographer? What was your experience like and what did you appreciate most about it?
My experience working with Beverly Reid has been delightful. I carefully examined the photography of other artists in my community, but I was consistently drawn to her aesthetic. My perception of her work was confirmed when I saw the prints from my first photoshoot with her. The styling and lighting were attractive, but more importantly, I recognized the girl in the image. She captured both my physical attributes and my personality. I most appreciate her commitment to create beautiful, yet authentic photographs that I will enjoy forever. I also love that she is inclusive and cares about my opinions.

Are you on a model team there? If so, what do you do in it and what do you love most about it? (we're asking because of the cute Valentine’s pic with a friend!)
This year I am part of Mrs. Reid’s Teen Model Team. Next year, I will represent her brand on the Senior Model Team. The fun picture you referenced was made with my sister as part of a Galentine’s mini-session. My sister is my best friend and we have so much fun working together on photo shoots. We feed off each other’s energy. Given the circumstances in which we grew up, we do not have a lot of pictures from our childhood. Working with Mrs. Reid has given us the opportunity to fill our picture frames and scrapbooks with lovely photos.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever done was leaving the only home I had ever known to create a better life and future for myself and my sister. My faith, determination, and ability to adapt were the tools I used to accomplish this goal.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Anything worth achieving takes your full effort. You were designed with a purpose, and you should never stop striving to fulfill that purpose. You are worth it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

I plan to graduate from Charleston Southern University with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism, with a focus in the culinary arts. I endeavor to pursue a career that allows me to travel, create, and inspire.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I have a penchant for the performing arts. My show choir group placed 2nd in the state for our performance of “Carry on Wayward Son.” I have also been cast in performances of Mary Poppins, Cinderella and Peter Pan.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is creating and editing videos. In fact, I placed fourth in the state at the 2022 Tennessee Beta Club convention in the Technology division. I was awarded for a video I created that featured the convention’s theme, “Beta Together.”

3 Things on your Bucket List
1. Cooking with Erin French from “The Lost Kitchen.”
2. Serving displaced families and orphans following natural disasters.
3. Battling a billfish in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

Who do you find inspiring?
I watched my mother battle cancer surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Through it all, she was faithful, humble, and determined. She modeled her values for us, and I will always be inspired by her strength.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Laughter and smiles are contagious, and I genuinely enjoy sharing them. I am an imperfect person, but I am grateful for my talents. I’m not afraid to let people see that I am vulnerable and sensitive.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am incredibly thankful to Beverly Reid, Leslie Conway and the team at Inspiring Teen Magazine for giving me the opportunity to share my story. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. I have faith that my story will reach the right person(s) at just the right time.

Why did you choose Angie Read Photography for your senior photographer? What was your experience like?
I chose Angie Read Photography to be my senior photographer because I saw her beautiful and creative work with other young teens on social media as well as my sisters experience during her senior year working with Mrs. Angie that helped make my decision super easy. She captures the most perfect moments and encourages and makes you feel even more confident in yourself during each of her sessions. Mrs. Angie’s work ethic and drive to create amazing memories for you to look back on in the future helps capture really special moments, and I wouldn’t have chosen anyone else!

What do you do in her model team and what do you love most about being on team?
Throughout this past year in her model team, we have travelled to many different spots including Galveston and areas around Houston to take themed pictures to promote her wonderful photography. I have enjoyed every single session, my favorites being our Boho theme with a super cute van and Project Beauty. Taking pictures with these girls with Mrs. Angie has really allowed me to get super comfortable in front of a camera without feeling insecure or uncomfortable with how I look. What I love most about being a part of a team of seniors is being vulnerable in front of a camera and having the support system of the other girls encouraging and uplifting one another made this process so much fun. Being a part of Angie Read Photography has been the highlight of my senior year truly capturing memorable moments for me to cherish forever.

What is a favorite memory from being on the team?
My favorite memory was the first time I met the entire team with Mrs. Angie. This was a super memorable moment because every single girl created such a positive environment, and we started amazing bonds which made this year of taking photos so fun. Getting to know each other with fun games and yummy food made my night, and I knew I made a great decision joining the team. Picking our mini session themes, places we would travel to, and learning about all the volunteering opportunities we would have within this team created so much excitement. The process of being a senior and getting ready for college is stressful and having these girls as well as Mrs. Angie made my senior year much more enjoyable.

What else should we know about you?
Throughout my high school career, I have volunteered monthly in my community. Being able to constantly help those in need that are right outside our doorsteps truly is so rewarding. Seeing how their lives change by just simple acts of kindness and continual help makes me realize how beautiful the world around us is. Life by ourselves is hard and being there for someone can not only change their aspects on life but also yours!

Where have been some of the places you've volunteered, and which one have you spent the most time with?
Why so much time with the one you picked? Places I have volunteered at since the beginning of my freshman year of high school include Northwest Assistant Ministries Resale Shop, NAM Meals on Wheels, IGO Pink, Paradise Springs Retirement Community, and Something Special Resale Shop. All these philanthropies represent amazing communities of people, and I have enjoyed my time spent helping those in need. Most of my volunteer hours were spent at Paradise Springs Retirement Community playing Bingo with the residents there. This place is filled with residents who are just in need of someone to talk to and spend time with, and I have made so many friends and thoroughly enjoyed talking and spending quality time with each and every one of the Bingo players. This was the highlight of most of my weekends over the summer, and really showed me how important spending time with your loved ones is!

What has been the most interesting or memorable volunteer experience?
My most interesting volunteer experience was dropping off meals with my sister and dad for the Northwest Assistant Ministries. Volunteering here was a very eye-opening experience and showed me how tough the real world can be. Every single participant that received a meal was so caring and thankful for our volunteerism and this continually pushed me to come back to try and help make a difference. Without this volunteering experience I feel that the world wouldn’t be as clear for me. It has shaped me into the person I am today and made me realize how lucky I am for the life my parents have provided for my sister and I!

If you could start your own volunteer organization, what would it be for and why is this matter so important to you?
A volunteer Organization that I would start would be for young children in need of necessities, toys, school supplies, etc. to help provide for those families that can’t for themselves. I have seen firsthand children who aren’t able to go home and have dinner at night or come to school and have a pencil to write with. This is heartbreaking and the sad reality and being able to make a difference in those children’s lives can start change.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Being confident in your own skin and feeling okay to be yourself is something inspiring I try to keep in my daily life. Young lives are continually being told to put certain aspects of their life on social media, and only show what people want to see. Being authentic and real with not only others but also yourself is so important to continue to grow and change as a person. Life can be bitter but being confident and empowered can only make it easier!

What do you think is the hardest thing for teens right now and what is your advice around it?
The hardest thing for teens right now in my eyes is to be authentic on social media. Our phones have created ways for people to hide behind their screens and not be themselves. This has been a constant battle for myself and has pushed me to be my most true self not only in person but online as well. Like I said before in a previous question people are encouraged to put a certain face on social media to look and act in certain fashions and being able to be true to yourself and show others who you really are can be a struggle. My advice to teens struggling with this is to find what truly makes you happy and make that the center of your life and surround yourself with people who support and care about your future. Stop letting social media control your life, and instead take that control back. Once you do you will find yourself living to please yourself and your happiness instead of others, and this will help you in the long run to live your own reality and not one that is only on social media.

What is something that makes your high school unique or fun that you participated in?
I participated in a club called Stand Leaders. This club brought students together who have lots of spirit and pride in their school to support student body in all areas of their achievements. I joined this club the beginning of my senior year, and I gained so many lifelong friendships as well as relationships with teachers and administration. Each game we wore a Stand Leader Jersey and hyped up our student section as well as the crowd to get the fire lit under our team to encourage them to be amazing. It was a unique and fun experience and made my senior year exciting!

What will you miss most about high school?
I will miss the close connections I have made with my peers I have been in school with since Kindergarten. It’s hard to move into the big bad world that’s out there and leave this bubble you have been in your entire life. Knowing that you have a bright future ahead is encouraging and exciting, but it’s hard to leave behind family and friends that have shaped you into the person you are today. I will miss that comfortable feeling of being home, but also am eager to have a fresh start and find myself in a new environment!

What is a favorite memory with your family?
My favorite memory with my family is Thanksgiving 2 years ago. This was our first family reunion since I was very young and being in one place with all my loved ones was an amazing feeling. Knowing that I have a support system that will continually be behind me in everything I do makes me realize how lucky I am! Family is so important to me, and I believe without that support system life can be so challenging. I have learned that people will come and go in your life, but your family will always be constant. Always keep them close and appreciate the time you have with them!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
A topic I am super passionate about is being inclusive to all our peers, and continually pushing everyone around me to be their true, authentic self. There is only one you in the world, and everyone should always feel like they can embrace who they truly are. Being unique and different is fun and should never be looked upon as negative but instead beautiful!

What led you to Katelyn Masters as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I knew being a senior spokesmodel was something I wanted to do for my last year of high school. I had followed her photography on social media, and I absolutely loved her work! My experience has been phenomenal. Katelyn is passionate about her work, and it shows in her photography. What I love most is the connection I have made along the way and the fun we have in every shoot.

Tell us about her spokesmodel team and your role in it.
I am a senior spokesmodel for Katelyn. As a senior spokesmodel I am available for Katelyn to shoot in many different settings, and I help to promote her business. My favorite photo shoot was a city shoot in Birmingham Alabama.

What would you like to share?
I would like to share about what it’s like to be a teenage girl. I feel like it’s a very difficult thing being a teenager in today’s society. I don’t try to be like others or fit in with the crowd. I feel like I am confident in who I am. I value being kind and treating everyone the same. I am not afraid to share my thoughts, but I do not judge others for their beliefs. I have a bubbly fun personality and feel like I bring joy to those around me. These are things I feel set me apart from other teens.

What do you think is the hardest thing about being a teenage girl in 2022? What is your advice for other teens going through that?
One of the hardest things about being a teenage girl is social media. I feel that social media increases insecurities for teenage girls. My advice for others dealing with social media pressure is to be confident in your self-image and not compare yourself to others.

What is the best part about being a teenage girl in 2022?
The best part about being a teenage girl is it’s the part of your life where you begin to blossom and grow to become the person you’re going to be.

What will you miss most about high school when you graduate?
What I will miss most about high school is the people. I will miss all the connections and friends I have.

What is a favorite thing you do with your friends?
My favorite thing to do with my friends is to go shopping and eat out at our favorite restaurants.

What is the biggest adventure you've ever been on?
I am an adventurous person; however, I haven’t had many opportunities to be adventurous but that is something I see in my future.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I feel like one of the strongest traits about me is my compassion for others. I feel like God has blessed me with the gift of understanding others. I am always willing to help others in need, even those who sometimes don’t deserve it.

Give us an example of a time when someone needed help and you jumped right in.
A time when someone needed me, and I jumped right in was when my grandfather was sick with cancer. I was there to help in any way I could with his medical and emotional needs.

What was the outcome and how did you feel about the experience afterwards?
The outcome was that I lost my grandfather but I did get the spend his last days with him so that is something I will cherish forever.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

A topic I feel passionate about is abortion. This is a subject I feel very strongly about. I feel like therefore I want to pursue a career being a labor and delivery nurse. I feel like this would be a good topic for me to speak about because I feel that so many people are torn when it comes to this subject. I feel like me expressing my views on this subject could possibly save a child from being taken.

What are your specific views?
If you were to debate the topic, what would your opening speech be?
I am 100% pro-life. I believe life begins at conception and that abortion takes the life of an Innocent human being. As a Christian, I am a firm believer that every life is a divine creation of God and life, and death is completely in His hands.

Are there times you feel like the opposite might be true? Why or why not?
No, I would never support destroying an innocent life no matter the circumstances. There are always other options for the mother is she doesn’t want to keep the child.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

Alura Mead

Alura Mead – Ohio
Nomination by Tiffany Grimaldi-Mead
Photography by Chadwick Photography
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination:  Alura Mead is inspiring due to her creativity, selflessness, and acts of kindness. Alura has a goal of helping to uplift her peers going through difficult times. It was a desire to resolve those issues that brought her to create an inclusive social club called Norton Modeling Team (NMT) to life. She founded the club  in early September 2021 with a clear goal: Help peers build self-esteem and work through self-image difficulties they may face in a positive way through unique, creative photo shoots that are provided free of charge for all participants in grades 9-12.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my desire to help other teens and the social club I created, Norton Modeling Team.

Tell us more about Norton Modeling Team.
I got the initial idea for NMT after seeing senior modeling teams on social media, but I wanted to create something different than a senior modeling team. The name came from the town I grew up in. I didn’t know if kids from other areas would want to take part in NMT, but I knew I could get some local friends to participate for at least the first photo shoot.

When did you officially start it and how did you recruit members?
I started it in September 2021 with our first open casting for head shots that was promoted on Facebook, on local community pages. We had people come from 6 different schools for that open call.

What is your team like? How many members do you have now vs when you started?
The team is very diverse, I wanted to create a safe space for students to embrace themselves and feel unjudged. An inclusive team for all size, gender, race, faith, style etc. We don’t have an official number of members, because everyone is always welcome to participate or not participate, there is no obligation with this team. We started our first official photo shoot at Gypsy Grace and The Vintage Goat with 7 participants but have had shoots with as many as 22 participants.

What do you do in it to form bonds and create unity?
At each shoot participants all talk before we start shooting, we have introductions etc. I try to have everyone understand their decisions on how they choose to live life is ok. Everyone is an individual and deserves the same respect as anyone else. We stay in touch through NMT social media and personal accounts.

Who takes the pictures?
Chadwick Coots of Chadwick Photography in Norton, Ohio takes all the photos.

What have you learned from pulling together this group and running the activities?
I have learned there are A LOT of details and work that goes into bringing a photo shoot together. From recruitment to finding unique collaboration locations, everything takes a lot of detailed work.

What things do you love doing with your family and what is a tradition you hope to hold onto forever?
I love gathering with my family. I love the noise and presence of all my family members. We are all so different, but we are very close. We may not get together often, but when we do it is like we haven’t been apart at all. The one tradition I hope I can learn and hold onto is making sausage and wine like my PopPop does. There is nothing like the food he makes homemade.

What will you miss most about high school and your time there?
I’ve gone to the same school my entire life. I will miss seeing the same familiar faces I have gone to school with since I was in kindergarten.

What is a favorite memory with your friends?
This is really a hard question because I have so many great memories with friends throughout my life. I’ve been lucky enough to share many adventures with my friends. It’s a tie, my top 2 favorite memories with my friends would have to be going on vacation with 8 friends to Myrtle Beach last Summer and the day I met our exchange student Lilly. Lilly is the sister I never had.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
That I love my family, friends and community. I’ve been very fortunate to grow up in a community that comes together to support each other. I love to volunteer; it makes my heart happy to do service for others. I enjoy lending a hand at our local food bank, pet shelter, library, camps, and city events. I’ve been awarded The President’s Volunteer Service Award 5 times for my service activities.

What volunteer opportunity do you spend the most time with and why?
Currently I spend most of my free time working on NMT, because I never want anyone to feel let down or disappointed if they participate. I want everyone to have a positive outcome.

What is the President's Volunteer Service Award and what did you need to do to be awarded this prestigious honor 5 times?
The President’s Volunteer Service Award was first awarded in 2003, it is a civil award that is awarded in recognition of outstanding volunteer contributions in community service to the United States. I was first awarded this honor with my Girl Scout Troop. Our troop would volunteer at all types of service events around our local area. I personally also volunteered with various organizations such as the local library Summer program, camp invention science camps, food distribution, holiday gift collection/wrapping/distribution and Safety Town for incoming kindergarteners.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to have the ability to make a presentation of my choosing to my peers it would be about building themselves and others up. I believe my peers should be able to have a creative outlet to express, embrace and help improve themselves. Everyone has gone through a rough time in their teen years and deserves something to help make those times brighter.

Why did you choose Chadwick Photography for your senior photographer? How did you plan for your shoot and what was the day like? What did you love most about it?
Chad first took my photos for family photos when I was 10. My parents always talk about our first shoot we ever had with Chad because a popup rainstorm happened in the middle of the shoot, and we kept going. I have really built a relationship with Chad over the years, and I know that if I ever am in a slump, not feeling myself or going through a rough time in life, he uplifts me. No matter what my attitude is or how rough my day is Chad has always been understanding, happy and encouraging. For the first part of my senior shoot, I was riding home from dinner in Akron, Ohio and my mom spotted a small park. We stopped and loved the space in Cascade Park. The evening we did my shoot it felt like it was 100 degrees outside. Chad met us at the park, and we walked around to the different areas to decide where to shoot first. Once we started the shoot, we just took our time and moved around because we were alone in the park because we started around 8:30pm. What I loved most about my shoot is that I got to be in sandal slides for comfort and that no one ever recognizes the park in my photos.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished is maintaining a good relationship with both of my parents after my parents decided to separate. I was able to do that with family and friends support as well as my parents helping find me a great therapist to help me in this life changing journey.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t be afraid to ask! The worst response you can get is no, but you can also get a yes.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself in medical school. My plans currently are to attend The University of Akron and work towards becoming a psychiatrist.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Traveling! I absolutely love to travel.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes, I’m double jointed in my arms. I can totally rotate my forearm.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Go on African safari 2. Meet Kendall Jenner 3. Learn to speak fluent Hungarian

Who do you find inspiring?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was never afraid of a challenge or to use her voice for others.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Yes, I love to ride dirt bikes. My dad taught me how to ride and the mechanics of them when I was about 4 years old.

Trisha Almaraz – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Cedar Rose Photography
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Trisha's passion in life and what she holds dear to her heart is helping others, especially children that are in need. That is what has inspired her to do anything and everything she can to one day become a social worker. Her motto in life is to just be happy whether it is on stage dancing or volunteering in her community. Trisha wants to make a difference and leave her mark on this world.

What would you like to talk about first?
I would like to talk about my thirteen-year dance career.

When did you get started in dance and where are you now with it?
I first started in dance in 2009. I was five years old. I remember going to my parents and asking to take a dance class after watching ballerinas on TV. I really wanted to wear the tutus and twirl around the stage. After a few years, I joined the competition team. I am now on my 13th season of dance and still love it as much as I did on day one.

What dances do you study, and which one do you love the best?
I study many types of dances every week. I take Ballet, Jazz, Clogging, Hip Hop, Contemporary/Modern, and Lyrical. My favorite by far is Hip Hop. I think it's because it is more freestyle and I am able to express myself better there.

What is the hardest thing about being a dancer that non-dancers may not realize?
I have found that most non-dancers just don’t realize the amount of time and dedication it takes to not only learn and perfect a two-minute dance but the amount of effort in your “off-time” it takes to stay in top form. You have to be super careful to not get injured in your day-to-day life and also make sure you are eating healthy and exercising.

What is your proudest memory with dance?
I have so many proud moments in my dance career. Every single time I learn a new skill I get a huge sense of accomplishment. It has taught me to never give up in life on anything because with enough practice I can accomplish anything.

What is a regular dance schedule like for you?
My dance schedule is crazy busy. I take 1.5hrs of drill team class every day in school. After school, I head to my dance studio Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for 3.5hrs of various classes. This doesn’t include the weekend or after-school rehearsals when it comes to the competition season.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
What I think inspires me the most that my nomination does not cover is the way I push through overwhelming scheduling and high reaching goals to make sure I accomplish everything I can. I belong to many high school clubs and activities all while maintaining a 3.9 GPA to be accepted into the National Honor Society and receive scholarships towards my college career. My future ambitions in life are to make a difference in the foster care system.

What are your favorite high school accomplishments and why do they mean so much to you?
My favorite high school accomplishment so far is when I made the dance drill team. It means so much to me because I know I have sisters for life with my teammates. We spend so much time together in school that we form such a tight bond that it will last a lifetime.

What clubs do you belong to, and which one do you spend the most time in?
I am a three-year member of the Student Council, T.R.I.B.E., Indians Give, and the American Sign Language Club. I think I spend almost equal time in all the clubs. We each meet once a week and spend many afternoons and weekends serving our school and communities.

Do you hold any leadership roles in any of the clubs and if so, what are they and what are your responsibilities?
I am the American Sign Language Club secretary. It is my responsibility to keep attendance and notes from each meeting. I, also, get a turn in teaching signs and educating other students about the Deaf community.

Picture
Photography by Cedar Rose Photography

What are your plans to make a difference in the foster care system and what led you to this path?
I am hopeful to make a difference in the foster care system by showing the need of not only having ASL interpreters working in the system but also having homes that are fluent in order to place children in need. I always knew I wanted to work with kids but when I started my path with American Sign Language, I realized how much it is a struggle for those with hearing difficulties. Other languages are heavily represented yet somehow ASL is not thought of often. I plan on changing that as much as I can in all aspects of social work.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
One major topic I could discuss forever would be the Deaf community. I have spent three years learning ASL along with trying to understand the struggles of the hearing impaired. My eyes have been opened to the great void of opportunities for those that need assistance, especially in the foster care system. I love sharing my thoughts and ideas to try and make a better life for those that need it.

Why did you choose Cedar Rose Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I was in search of a photographer to do headshots for my upcoming pageant season. Cedar Rose Photography came highly recommended. I am so glad we decided to hire her. She makes the sessions so much fun with music and laughter. She also takes the time to make sure every single detail is just perfect.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I think the hardest thing I have ever accomplished would be to believe in myself. It is still a learning process every single day but worth the effort.

Picture
Photography by Cedar Rose Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The most important thing is to make a plan and just don’t stop trying until you succeed.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I should just be finishing my social work degree and hope to go straight into the workforce.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to just hang out with friends and family. We spend a lot of time shooting pool and listening to music.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. I want to ride in a hot air balloon.
2. I want to move to New York City.
3. I want to vacation in the Bahamas.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find those inspiring that make their dreams come true through hard work. No matter how small or big it reminds me that I can accomplish what I want if I work hard enough.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope I am inspiring others by working hard. I try to lead by example in being a good leader and encouraging others to continue working towards their goals.

Madeleine Voss – Ohio
Nomination by Jessica Voss
Photography by Stump Photography
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madeleine serves as an inspiration to ALL females who wish to pursue a career as a pilot. As a Native American who spends lots of time on her home reservation, her family and friends ask lots of questions about flying. They see her pursuing her dreams and encourages them to pursue their dreams. There are no pilots in our tribe and for her to be a female pilot, she breaks down barriers and sets exceptional standards for her peers. Her inspiration even extends to me, her Mother. Because of her, I have began my start to learning how to fly. Madeleine is so young and I cannot wait see what else she will accomplish in her life.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would absolutely love to be interviewed about my journey with flying planes! Also, any questions about my culture would be welcome. I am 50% Native American from Acoma Pueblo which is in New Mexico!

Yes, tell us more about that! How did you get started in flying planes and why?
Flying planes was somewhat of a spontaneous decision. Right after I got my driver’s license, I remember looking over at my mom and saying, "Alright, now it's time to get my pilot's license!" I think my love for flying and traveling started when I was younger. Whenever we flew on an airplane, I would always ask the pilot for the little wings you could clip onto your shirt, and I thought they were the coolest people. After my first discovery flight, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

What is/was the hardest thing to learn or overcome in the process?
One of the hardest things to overcome was knowing that it's a male dominated career. I was afraid that I wouldn't be accepted or that I would be judged and that scared me. So far in my journey, everyone I have met has been beyond nice and helpful and I have made many friends in the process. For any girl who wants to learn to fly, I say do it!

What are your goals with flying?
My biggest goal is to fly commercially for an airline. My short-term goal right now is getting my private pilot’s license. From there I will be working on instrumentation, multi-engine, and becoming a certified flight instructor! I am so excited for everything that's to come.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I could go on forever and ever about flying! Right now, I am very close to achieving my private pilot’s license and hope to be able to fly commercially one day. I hope to inspire more girls and women of color to start their journey with flying. I would also encourage everyone to learn more about Native Americans. When I tell people that I am a Native American, they think that is the coolest thing. They usually follow it up by telling me that somewhere in their family tree they have Native roots. I would encourage everyone to learn more about our culture and history. There is so much to discover about my people

Tell us more about your tribe. What is it like?
Acoma Pueblo is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. It's located about 60 miles west of Albuquerque and the pueblo sits on top of a small mesa. The pottery and art is incredible and isn't like anything you've ever seen. Every family you meet who comes from Acoma is loving, supportive and will welcome you in with open arms, amazing food, and stories to tell! The coolest thing about our tribe (and many other tribes) is that the women are in charge. Women own the land, they own the houses, they are the ones that pass along our birth clans, our traditional names, and our assets. The tribal leaders are always telling the people, take care of their grandmas, wives, and daughters, they are who make us great… The men are here to support and help our women. It’s the coolest thing to know that the women are held in such high esteem.

How often do you get to visit and what do you love most about your visits?
I try to visit a few times a year. It's been harder to visit because of covid restrictions and because it's across the country. I am so grateful whenever I can visit, seeing my family means the world to me. I especially love the holidays when we get to watch the dances and ceremonies. There is still so much that I have to learn about our traditions. It’s hard to do that when I live far away but every moment spent at home is also a learning opportunity. My grandmothers and aunts are always teaching me new things about our way of life.

What are you most proud of your tribe for?
I am proud of the support everyone has for one another. I'm proud of the strength of our ancestors. I am super proud that family means so much more than wealth and possessions. What matters in the tribe is that everyone is taken care of. It’s nice to be able to know which family someone comes from and it’s even better to be able to know when someone needs help. I am proud to say that I come from Acoma.

What did you love most about working with Stump Photography?
Jack and Darcy Stump have both worked very hard to create a positive environment for everyone. They treat our team like family and are always looking out for our safety. They are like second parents, they keep us out of situations that would be bad for our image and wellbeing. Besides being great photographers, they are also wonderful people. They have created a successful business and a great influencer team where everyone is welcoming and kind. I am always excited for our next shoot! I cannot thank them enough for giving me the opportunity to do something I have always wanted to do.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Another inspiring thing about myself is my love for exploration. I love camping with my family, friends, and boyfriend and doing outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, and swimming. One of my main goals in life is to travel as much as I can and to see the world. By nature, I am not an extroverted person, it takes a lot of energy and focus for me to go out of that comfort zone. I am making more effort to talk to new people and experience more things. Sometimes it’s tough but I have to remind myself that I will grow from taking chances. I encourage everyone to step outside their comfort zone and go to places they haven’t been to before, even if it’s just down the road!

What is the longest hike you ever went on and where was it?
My family and I hiked up to the summit of Mount Taylor in New Mexico. The elevation is 11,301 feet and has a 6 mile trail all the way to the very top where you can sign a book saying you made it. This is one of our more common hikes that we try to do every trip.

Where has been your favorite place to travel to and why?
My favorite place to travel to is Telluride, Colorado. The mountains are beautiful and it's one of the best skiing places in the U.S. Every year we invite our family from New Mexico to drive up and stay with us for a week when we visit in the spring. There's so much to do there besides skiing and snowboarding, you will never get bored.

What is a favorite travel memory?
My favorite travel memory was going to North Carolina every Fourth of July growing up. Spending days kayaking in a lake with my cousins, exploring mountains, and eating ice cream is something I will never forget. These are memories I will always hold close to my heart.

Where do you hope to go next?
I hope to be able to travel outside of the country. The only place I have been outside of the United States, was Whistler, Canada. One day I hope to be able to visit Australia to see all the different animals!

Picture
Photography by Stump Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Practice confidence and never pass up an opportunity that pushes you out of your comfort zone!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself flying commercially for an airline. I also hope to start a program to aid Native Americans in learning to fly!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love playing videogames with my cousins. It is crazy that we can all be in different states/locations but still be able to talk and play together. Technology has made our world so much smaller; I am able to be with my cousins even if I am not physically with them. It’s how we can hang out despite being across the country from each other.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to other countries
Try surfing

Tell us more about Alysia Maria Senior Model program.
Alysia Marie Senior Program is a photography group that is for seniors who get to have year round pictures taken and also represent Alysia by making her outstanding photography pictures seen.
I heard about Alysia through my friend who was one of her senior reps last year. She told me how much Alysia does for her seniors, her passion for her work, and the confidence Alysia has helped them build all while getting senior pictures throughout the whole year.
I chose to become a rep for Alysia because I loved how my friend Katie described her experience with her. I also saw Alysia’s work and I was in awe of it, and when she held the first meeting, before I joined, I just loved her energy and passion so much I knew it would be an amazing opportunity for my senior year.

What do you do in it, and what do you love so much about it?
The senior reps get to make amazing new friends, get tons of senior photos taken, post and represent Alysia, get chances to be in magazines and nominated for amazing things such as scholarships and magazine covers, and go on trips!
The thing I loved most about Alysia’s photography is the people, including herself, who I get to spend time around and build lifelong memories with. They say pictures speak a thousand words, but the moments that Alysia captures in our pictures hold way beyond just a thousand.

What is a favorite photoshoot from being in the model program?
My absolute favorite photoshoot would have to be the one in Colorado! Alysia has some family living in Colorado who were kind enough to welcome us into their house and gave us the opportunity to travel to another state and get magnificent pictures taken.

What will you miss most about it?
What I will miss the most about being a senior rep for Alysia is the feeling of awe you are consumed by when she sends you your pictures from the previous photoshoot and you get to see her amazing talents by capturing the little moments you didn’t even know she caught.

What else would you like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about how much I've overcome and the person I am today who has battled so many things in life but chose to rise above and not let the water around me get inside and sink me down. Instead, I choose to be a helping hand in trying to help others feel better about themselves, show them everything life has to offer, and be someone who sticks up for others even when they aren't around.

Please tell us more about this.
High school can be a very rough place. People are constantly trying to find themselves and are so caught up in the “now” that they just want to fit in, which can lead to people losing friends and getting talked bad about by some people who think it’s cool and funny because others who are insecure are lashing out on others. I have realized that the world is so much bigger and a better place then what is going on now.

What have you learned from it that can help others?
Things that I have learned that can help others is to not let someone else determine how much you’re worth, because the people who are trying to make you feel bad about yourself are most often projecting their insecurities about themselves onto you hoping that by bringing someone else down it will make them feel better about themselves. But the truth is, it doesn't work like that. My advice is to always be who you want to be and do what you want to do even if you are doing it alone. As long as you are happy don’t let anyone else steal your happiness.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
A few things about me that my nomination doesn't cover are how I have a huge heart and soft spot for animals and how I love my job at The Hamptons Assisted Living. At my job I get the chance to talk and connect with the people of the generations who have come before us, alongside getting participate in activities such as playing bingo with the residents. As for my passion for animals, every animal tame or wildlife, big or small, they pull at my heart strings and I cannot stand to see one hurt or abandoned; the other day I picked up a stray that was dumped off at my high school and brought the dog home to help find her a forever home with a loving family.

What animals do you love to spend the most time with?
I honestly love every single animal on the planet, but if i had to choose one animal that i love to spend time with it would have to be horse. I used to ride and participate in horse shows when I was younger and ever since then horses to me are an opportunity for freedom, adventure, and a happily place for when you need to epace the khaotic world for a little bit.

Do you have pets at home? Tell us about them.
I do have two fur babies at my house, one is a lab and one is a mix between a bichon and a havenneez. The lab was my first baby that I actually begged my mom into adopting from a “petapoluza” at our local park. I fell absolutely in love with him from the moment I saw him in his baby blue ribbon around his neck and when I picked him up he had the cutest yawn ever. He fell asleep in my arms and didn't want to be put back down, so I knew I had to do everything I could to take home my sweet six month old black lab who I named Romeo.

What is something you've learned from working at your job that others who don't get the opportunity to spend much time with the older generation may not realize?
What I've learned from working at my job is that the older generation had such a big part in the development of not only technological things but war, children, and responsibilities that we don’t really struggle with anymore. The thing that truly admired me the most about them is that they do not come with hatred hearts or degrading intentions upon others, these days it seems like everyone is just so selfish about what they want and they don’t care who they have to hurt to get it. But the older generations did everything for their family, friends, and even strangers, if they see someone in need they would no doubt offer help or support to anyone even if all they can give is a hug, conversation, or prayer.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to my peers it would be about the importance of self-love and being beyond worthy of happiness and love. I would choose this topic because I know how it feels to have your self worth drop so low that you don't feel worthy of anything and are constantly struggling with comparison and jealousy of others. It can feel so diminishing and lonely that you drive yourself away from everyone because you do not feel like you are enough to be cared for or loved. I think this is the most self diminishing feeling people can have and I just want to be able to tell people and show others just how much they are valued and worthy of. There is so much beauty in life and everyone deserves to believe that they deserve and are worthy of every bit of it.

What do you feel is your best leadership quality and why?
I think that my best leadership quality would have to be encouragement because there’s just something about helping others and trying to help others be happy that makes me feel like I've accomplished something good in my life even if I only leave an impact on one person.

3 Things on your bucket list?
The top thing on my bucket list is to travel the world, I want the opportunity to learn and study other cultures, nature, and wildlife that i may not get the chance to experience here
The second thing on my bucket list is to get involved in politics. My goal right now is to become a lawyer but someday I want to be able to make a change and help influence the political system.
Another thing on my bucket list is to go on mission trips to places that may not be able to learn or hear about God and who could use His wisdom, comfort, and love that he promises to us. I want to visit Jerusalem and Bethlehem as they both have a big part in the Bible.

Who do you find inspiring?
Something that I find inspiring is people speaking their mind and others helping others. The world could use a little more love and a little less competition in society.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like to share an interest of mine which would have to be science, I love everything biology and space related. I am currently taking my second semester of Biology majors from a local junior college program I have in my high school, and I am just absolutely amazed by discoveries, scientists, and the history of the universe.

Tell us about your role as Senior Class President.
As senior class president I take on multiple different roles. I am the person who works with my other classmates to fix problems and to resolve issues. I also take my classmates ideas and present them to higher authority. Being senior class president was so important to me because I’ve always loved listening to what my classmates had to say and doing something about it. I feel like I can be a voice to those who cannot speak up for themselves

What are your general duties and responsibilities? And what has been/will be your biggest role/responsibility this year?
Talking to different people about situations that are happening in the school. Helping to plan events and just getting people heard. My biggest responsibility has been making senior year fun and memorable … for everyone.

What do you hope your fellow classmates remember about you being the president?
I hope they remember me as a kind acquaintance and a smiling face.

What have you learned from being the Class President?
I have learned that being a leader is not easy and that it takes a lot of effort. I’ve also learned that no matter how hard you try, everyone will never be satisfied.

What do you think is your best leadership quality?
My favorite leadership quality is my ability to listen to others and to help them solve the problem.

Why did you choose Maria Latham Photography for your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I picked Maria Latham to be my senior photographer because she was a beautiful woman who I grew up around who never failed to put a smile on my face. My experience was amazing she was very patient with me, and she listened to my ideas, and she brought them to life. What I loved most is how she always took into consideration how I felt about everything we did. I felt as if I had control and I loved that.

Tell us more about best buddies. What do you love about it and what is your time spent with them doing?
Best buddies or cub buddies there’s a club at my school where we go on Friday’s and hang out with the special needs kids in our school. We also go to various activities with the other high schools in our area. I have been a part of this since I was in eighth grade and I have gained such great friendships that I’ll never forget.

What is your favorite activity in the 4H Leadership Program?
My favorite activity in the 4-H leader ship program is getting to see just exactly how the different people in my county all work together. They each have such different roles but somehow manage to all work and help each other. I think it is very inspiring.
Tell us more about Beta and HOSA.
Beta and HOSA are two organizations that our school offers as a club. In these clubs we do different things. HOSA Stands for Health Occupation Students of America. In this club we host blood drives at our school and learn about different health occupations. In Beta we help all around the school and do food drives, toy drives, or anything of that nature. Beta help students learn how to be leaders and helps build character.

What do you get to do as a medical intern and where?
As a medical intern at my school I leave school every day of the second semester and go to a different job site. These jobsites can range anywhere from the hospital to working at the animal shelter. The first semester we took a college level medical terminology class.

Tell us about your basketball career. What is your proudest moment?
My basketball career has shaped me into the girl I am today. It has taught me how to do many different things like how to listen to my coaches when I’m doing something wrong, to how to lead others when I can’t keep my head up myself. It has also taught me that nothing is impossible. My proudest moment is winning the “best teammate award” After winning the state championship for the first time in my schools 49 year history.

What has your softball career been like? What is a favorite memory from softball?
My softball career has been a career that I’ll never forget. Ever since I was a child, being the daughter of the coach has been one of my most favorite things. It taught me how to be an example for others and helped me to become a more patient person. it also taught me how to listen to people and how to be a good leader. My favorite memory from softball is going to the World Series with my dad as my coach.

What is Ms CCCHS and what does it mean to you?
Miss CCCHS is a senior superlative at my high school. It is peer selected and is the award that represents all my high school is. Miss CCCHS means so much to me, I have wanted this ever since I heard my big sister talk about it. It has always been a goal of mine.

Teyla Baker

2/9/2022

Picture

Teyla Baker – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by Teyla Baker
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Teyla is UNBELIEVABLE. She is fighting heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, and MANY other chronic illnesses. For the past three years she’s been out of school, she hasn’t had the normal teen experience. She’s almost lost her life multiple times. She’s been so sick and has wanted to give up but she hasn’t given up. Last month she had EMERGENCY OPEN HEART SURGERY for VAD device to help her heart. If she wouldn’t have she probably would have died. This will help her be strong enough to survive a future heart transplant. All through this she still manages to put a smile on others faces. She still is the kind, hyper, and beautiful girl she was before. She is selfless and cares more about the people she surrounds herself with then herself. She’s using her platform/insta to spread her story and awareness she hopes to grow and reach other kids struggling to fight and inspire them. She’s different but deserves to win this because she deserves a smile herself.

What should we definitely know about you in 100 words or less?
I’ve been on a three year journey and would love to share it. Im fighting heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS), superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS), postural orthostatic tachycardia (POTS), and chronic headaches/pain. I also just had open heart surgery for a ventricular assist device (VAD).

IQ2: What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Before my most recent health downfall I was offered to sign with a top National modeling agency. Modeling is my dream but unfortunately, I had to turn it down. Recently, a very big producer reached out and were working on something very big. These prove that no matter what working to your dreams is possible even with many downfalls.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Bullying, loyalty, and awareness. When I first got sick the kids at my school didn’t like that I was different and not (normal) anymore. They started turning on me one by one. Bullying me because I wasn’t popular enough anymore. Even friends that I thought were true friends. But, being sick doesn’t make me different I’m still the same girl just stronger because I go through things they don’t. Loyalty is apart of this I needed to find people who were true friends and loyal. And awareness because there’s so many illnesses that kids like me and younger go through and there isn’t the right awareness for them. They struggle sharing there story but that’s my goals. To share my story and let them know there not alone.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my passions in life. Almost everything I do in life I am passionate about!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think one of the biggest inspiring things that mine nomination does not cover is the fact that I have kept going and pushing forward no matter what has come in my way. I have moved school many different times throughout high school, and still have managed to make and keep friends, and adjust to my schools. The school I will graduate from is a very demanding school, I am required to write and present a thesis, which most people do not do until they are getting their masters.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
One major topic I would discuss in front of my peers is the topic over homelessness. I have been researching this topic for my major thesis project at school and my eyes have been open to this community. I have learned so much and I love sharing information with others!

Heather Hudspeth

Picture

Heather Hudspeth – Tennessee
Nomination & Photography by Cindy B Thymius Photography
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Heather Hudspeth is a beautiful Christian girl who loves life. She is a kind, caring, and talented teen. She writes, plays music, and is active in her church. She is involved at Central Church where she serves on the worship team, connection team, content team, and teaching team. She also volunteers as an assistant teacher in Children's Ministry. She works at Dogtopia. At the high school, she is involved with Theater, Bible Club, and as a teacher's assistant.

What should we know about you?
My whole life I've had a mission of helping others. Whether it be volunteering, mission trips, or leadership at my church I strive to look for opportunities to better myself because of the impact I may have on others. Being aware that I may have an impact on people helps me always be a good role model especially to younger girls like those in the Sunday school class I lead. Having had my fair share of struggles in the past, I have begun to use everything I've learned to helps others who go through similar circumstances.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
When I get to college I plan to join the Air Force ROTC program and pursue the medical field. I have always had a heart for helping others and I feel that the military will open a lot of doors for me to have a even larger impact. For me, a life spent serving others is a life well lived.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would want to bring up the topic of mental health. I think we should encourage mental health check ins and ensure that people feel more comfortable asking for the help they need. Too many people struggle in silence for fear of other people's reactions, so I think we need to create a more loving, accepting, and nonjudgemental community around mental health. There is such a negative stigma surrounding mental health that no one feels comfortable talking about it. I think we should change that.

I was at a slight handicap because my arm never fully straighten, so I was never able to play any other sports due to my arm. 2 years ago I started having more pain and numbness which lead us back to the doctor for answers. Come to find out i still had a broken elbow & torn ligaments that needed repair. After my recovery I am back to cheering and tumbling. I feel that my strength, dedication and love for cheer pulled me through.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

What do you love most about your squad?
The thing I love most about my squad is that no matter how hard our goal or challenge is we work as a squad to achieve it. When we step out on the court, we try our best and smile no matter what is going on!

Grace Larsen

Picture

Grace Larsen – Michigan
Photography by Lindsay King Photography
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Leadership is something that is tough to find in today’s teenage world. Grace Larsen is not the norm when it comes to teens though as she has developed a group called "Confidence Through Kindness" to reach out to young girls to show them the value of mentorship and building confidence through being kind. Additionally, she has recently started a Podcast called “Lead the Way” where she interviews teenage girls who have discovered their potential through various leadership opportunities (sports, clubs, church, etc.). Her motive is to show others how to find their true potential and tap into their leadership capabilities.

Picture
Photography by Lindsay King Photography

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would most like to be interviewed about my social impact group, Confidence Through Kindness. I developed this group through my affiliation with Girl Talk which provides mentorship opportunities for teenage girls. I have a passion for helping young girls (middle school) gain confidence and believe in their potential.

How did you get the idea for this group and how did you get it started?
I struggled moving from elementary to middle school and wished that I had someone to look up to and talk to. I found an organization called Girl Talk and found that their mission was like what I wanted to do (grow female confidence/leadership), so I joined their organization and started my own chapter called “Confidence Through Kindness”.

Tell us more about it, including how other girls can be involved.
I work with 6, 7 and 8th grade girls at the middle school in my community. We talk about women empowerment, body positivity, how to be a successful leader today and how to build each other up. I’ve worked with these girls for two years and have loved every minute.

What leadership skills have you learned through this?
I’d say that my job is to help them with their confidence, but through helping them I have also gained confidence. It has helped me be more organized by building an agenda prior to our meetings. I think one of the leadership skills I have learned is how to be relatable to the group you are working with. I want my message and meetings to apply to the audience, so they stay focused and attentive.

What do you think your best leadership qualities are?
I think the number one is how personable I am. I love to learn about other people. My positivity and outlook on specific topics make people want to listen to me and follow what I’m doing.
What have you learned about yourself through this?
I have learned that everyone is similar. Sometimes people feel that they are the only ones dealing with something heavy, but everyone has something they are working through. I’ve also learned that talking with a group and getting your feelings out can help.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Something I would love to talk about is how to help build up confidence in young teenage girls. I have worked with this age group as a mentor and am passionate about helping them find their voice and seeing their worth. I also like to talk about the impact of social media on adolescents.

Picture
Photography by Lindsay King Photography

Why did you choose Lindsay King Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Lindsay is the best! I first worked with Lindsay almost three years ago for headshots for the Miss Michigan Outstanding Teen competition. Lindsay always makes sure I look my best and is creative and inspiring.

Are you part of a model team there? If so, what is it like/what do you do there? What is a favorite photo shoot you've done?
I was part of the Modelsquad’21 group. That was so much fun to be a part of. There were two groups of girls, models, and dancers. I was in the model group and loved the different shoots we got to do!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some other inspiring things about me are that I love to volunteer. Giving back to different organizations warms my heart. Some of my favorites are the Soup Kitchen, Homeless Shelters, Retirement Homes, and anything related to kids. I am a competitive dancer and I love being on stage. I hope my performances inspire other dancers to work hard!

Where do you spend most of your time volunteering and why?
I spend most of my time volunteering through my organization “Confidence Through Kindness”. I love to be able to mentor and inspire younger girls.

Picture
Photography by Lindsay King Photography

Tell us about your dance career. When did you get started, what do you study and how often do you spend at your dance studio?
I have been dancing for 5 years. I started a lot later than most competitive dancers which was hard. I found that it was a blessing though because I had to work harder than everyone else to catch up to them and it helped develop my work ethic and determination. I currently do every kind of dance except tap, but my favorites are musical theatre and contemporary.

What is a favorite memory from dance?
My favorite thing about dancing is telling a story through movement. Every time I am on stage, I pour my heart out and hope the audience can feel it. At one competition one of the judges acknowledged that she could feel my heart through the dance and that was the best compliment I ever received.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
Outside of the comment above that means the most to me, I think the best accomplishments I’ve had for dance is placing 4th at Nationals in the highest category and the judges awards I have received for most entertaining dance in Musical Theatre and Contemporary.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
As cliché as it is, I’d say to always be yourself. It’s so much easier to accomplish your goals if you are yourself than if you are trying to be someone else. I’d also say to keep pushing forward through any tough times! I like to use negativity from others to motivate me to succeed.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

3 Things on your bucket list
1. To open a homeless shelter where the residents can bring their dogs/pets
2. To travel and make an impact across the globe
3. To always find happiness in the things that I do

I think my kindness and compassion are the main reasons people are drawn to me. I put other people’s feelings in the forefront. My goals are to make everyone happy – that brings me job.

What would you like to talk about?
I’ve always been interested in is criminal justice. It comes back to my dad being a K9 officer, and I am very excited to start college next fall and pursue that path.

What do you find most interesting about the field of criminal justice?
It’s a job where you don’t always have to sit behind a desk. It continues to pique your interest, even many years later and you can help so many people in this line of work.

What is an influential moment that your dad and his K9 have persuaded you to take that path? Please share more about the K9!
When he first taught me the commands he uses on his work dog, Bena. She is a Belgian Malinois, and currently 15 years old, but she still has a lot of energy and spirit.

What steps are you taking now to help aid in your success in the criminal justice system, and what specifically are your goals after college?
Well, the first step is starting college and keeping my major. If I continue to try and work my butt off, I can get into the FBI academy or start somewhere in law enforcement.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Just being passionate and true to my career. Every time I would drift to another major, I would always come back to criminology. I’m scared and nervous about what the future holds just in case something changes, but I’ve always dreamed of being a profiler or K9 officer and going to Texas State is just starting that nerve-wracking journey.

Why did you choose Cameryn Wilkins Photography as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Cameryn is my older sister's very close friend of many years. She is an amazing person and made me feel very comfortable and helped me let loose and have fun while taking my senior photos.

Tell us about your volleyball career. When did you start playing and what do you love about it?
I started playing when I was in 5th or 6th grade, and the one thing I loved most was being able to play your heart out on the court with your friends.

What is your team like and what will you miss most about it?
My team was and still is my family. On and off the court, you spend so much time together, and one thing my coach told me is “women bond to battle.” I’m going to miss the bond, and the feeling you get while playing.

What is a favorite memory with your volleyball team?
I was recovering from previous surgery, my coach let me play libero, and my teammates supported it. Each game and practice was a favorite memory of mine.

How did you get started in thrifting and what is the coolest thing you've ever found while out thrifting?
My best friend Lily got me started, she’s a big thrifter herself and always goes out of her way to find me something too. The coolest thing I ever found thrifting would be this bright purple blazer with shoulder pads, and I bought it.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am currently in the National English Honor Society at my high school and one of the favorite things I’ve done is going to read Christmas books to intermediate school kids right before the break. It brought me back to when I was young, and it made me realize that I’m going to graduate soon and take a step further into my future.

Tell us about an average day volunteering in this capacity.
Honestly, you’re just with your friends, having a good time and helping others have a good time. You make a plan, show up, and carry it out leaving yourself with good memories.

What has your favorite book to read (for yourself) been so far and why?
It’s not a book per se, but the play Hamlet. I read it in my English class and it continued to intrigue me.

How do you feel about so many books being censored now?
I can understand the need to censor them, but a lot of people grew up with them and still love the stories. So I feel it depends on what book it is.

If you could write a book about being a teen today, what aspect would you focus on as interesting and widespread among your age group?
I would write about a teen going through a change of heart. One who thought a sport was her whole life but kept getting injured, so her future changed. The solution would be her going through this journey and finding the one thing in life she learned to love.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Recovering from a spinal surgery. My friends and family is how I got through it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be true to yourself, and if you want to do it go for it.

Picture
Photography by Cameryn Wilkins Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I see myself in some sort of law enforcement academy.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Archery, on some days I felt down I would grab my bow and arrow, turn up the music and have fun.

3 Things on your bucket list:
I Graduate high school, enjoy my time at Texas State and get good grades in college.

Who do you find inspiring?
My father, he’s a big inspiration in my life, and right now I want to thank him.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I would say my stubbornness and any person in anyone's life can be inspiring, so I like to think I can be too.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I’m very thankful for this opportunity.

What do you want us to know about you?
One thing everyone should know about me is that I like to be involved in my community and I do that by participating in school and out of school activities. I have been a cheerleader since I was six. This year, I decided to go out on a limb and try gymnastics and softball. When I’m not participating with my athletic teams, I’m either participating in an FFA activity or am working as a waitress. I have gained so many skills with all of these activities from teamwork, work ethic, and communicating with others. Most importantly, I have developed relationships with people I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t involved.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started tumbling classes when I was three. During my classes, I became interested because I could see the cheer teams practice. At age seven I joined my first All-Star completion cheer team and immediately fell in love with cheer! Since then, I have been on multiple All-Star teams which have been very successful. While competing, we qualified for Nationals and received 2nd in our division. My sophomore year was the last year I competed All-Star, but I still compete with my high school competition team. What I love most about cheer is the connection I make with my teammates.

What is your cheer team like? What is a favorite memory with them?
This year I cheered for High School Varsity Football and competed with two of our Highschool competition team. My team is very close and we work really well together. We all have a drive to be successful in cheer. My favorite memory was getting 5th at state and getting recognized at our school for being the first squad at our school to be in the top 5 in our division. Our success drives us to better making us stronger every year.

What did you find most surprising in gymnastics?
The thing I found most surprising about gymnastics was how much mental strength and physical strength it takes to learn new skills and compete in the events. Tumbling comes more naturally as I’ve been doing it for thirteen years. However, getting on a balance beam where I have to focus on staying on the beam while completing my routine (skills) is very challenging.

Picture

Have you started softball yet and if so, what is your team like?

Softball in Indiana is a spring sport and will begin in March thus I have not started softball yet. Since this is my first year, and I am a junior, I have been working with multiple coaches outside of school to assist my batting, throwing, and speed work to prepare me for tryouts.

What do you do in FFA and what is a favorite accomplishment?
Currently, I’m the FFA chapter’s secretary. I am also in charge of the social media posts for all FFA events/ activities. My favorite accomplishment was receiving the Leadership Award my first year in FFA while at Leadership Camp.

What have you learned working as a waitress that might surprise others who have never worked in that industry?
I have learned that there are lots of responsibilities while waitressing. Time management and multitasking are big factors. While I’m waiting my table, I also have to complete multiple tasks such as prepare certain sides, refill beverages and anything else requested from any customer (not just at the table I’m waitressing at). It’s not the easy job I thought it would be, but I love it and the challenges that come with it.

What do you feel is your best leadership skill that you've learned through all these activities?
I have learned how your attitude can affect everyone around you. Whether it be cheering on my fellow teammates in gymnastics or being extra kind to a customer that appears to be in a bad mood, just a little positivity can change others attitudes around you.

Why did you choose April Moore Creations to be your photographer? Are you on her model team?

I chose April Moore Creation to be my photographer because I love how versatile her photos are. My experience with April was fun. I loved that we told her our visions and she made them even better than we thought possible. I am on the April Moore Creations Senior Model Team for 2023. I love that I get to do photo shoots with a bunch of my friends!

Tell us more about CASWA. What is it and what are your roles and responsibilities as a volunteer?
CASWA is a Community Appreciation Supper Worker Auction. Our FFA chapter hosts on an annual basis a free dinner for everyone in our community. My main role this year was to collect donated items to make chili and hot dogs for everyone that attended. However, I also helped set up, serve, and tear down the event.

Where do you spend the most time volunteering and why do you love it so much?
I have volunteered the most at the animal shelter. I love volunteering there because I get to play and love on dogs and cats that do not have owners. I enjoy interacting with them and seeing all their different personalities.

What is a favorite memory from volunteering?
My favorite memory from volunteering is when I was showing my rabbits at family fun night for FFA. We put on a big petting zoo for everyone in the community to come out and play with baby animals. It is really rewarding to see children pet farm animals for the first time.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love animals, big or small. 4-H really allowed this passion to develop. I showed dairy steers, feeder calves, goats, rabbits and chickens. I showed mostly at open shows, county fair, and at the state fair. 4-H taught me a lot about responsibility while I was caring for all the animals. However, during my sophomore year, I had to make a difficult decision – if I continued with 4-H, I would not be able to participate in athletics. Therefore, I chose athletics. FFA has helped fill the void of 4-H since I’m still involved at the county fair.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
A topic I would like to present to my peers is how FFA is not just about knowledge of agriculture. FFA has positively influenced generations for more than 85 years. FFA develops leadership skills, healthy living, confidence, work ethic, community service, lifelong friendships, communication, business development, good sportsmanship, and so much more. Most of my favorite memories so far include service work I have participated in with FFA. We work very hard completing these tasks but knowing we helped others, is worth it. FFA is what helped me develop into the person I am today.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

My advice to someone would be to always look forward. Try to always keep a positive attitude and use every mistake made as a learning opportunity.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I plan to be a senior in college about to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. I also hope to be in my final year of cheerleading for the university I attend.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity aside from what has already been mentioned is snowboarding. I learned to snowboard last year and I have loved it ever since. I try to go as much as my schedule will allow.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is that I can knit and I REALLY enjoy doing it. Not many 16 years know how to knit. I have learned how to make scarves and blankets.

3 Things on your bucket list
3 things on my bucket list are Sky Diving, going to Big Major Cay Beach in the Bahamas, and traveling to the Haiti to volunteer with the children there.

Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person in my life is my mom. I wouldn’t be who I am today without her. She solely ensures I have everything I need to be successful.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
My positive attitude inspires others. Also, I think I am inspiring because I have the drive to be successful and while caring about others.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I really appreciate this opportunity that April Moore’s nomination to Inspiring Teen Magazine has given me. I hope that my story can inspire others.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

I would present how cheer is a sport. All my life I have been told that what I do is not a sport even though it is one of the most dangerous sports there is. I practice three hours during the week and five hours on the weekend for competition cheer. Recently a show was released on Netflix called "Cheer," which has blown up. It shows a really good example of what we do and how physically and mentally hard it is. I would describe how cheer is just as hard as other well known sports.

Tell us about your cheer career - how did you get started and what do you love most about it?
I started cheering at the age of 5 in flag football and my mom enrolled me in tumble and dance classes at the same age, too. I enjoyed it all so much that she took me to join a competition cheer gym. My first day, I fell in love and as they say, the rest is history. What I love most about cheer is the friendships that I have formed over the years and the characteristics of hard work, determination and leadership that I have developed.

What is a favorite accomplishment from cheer?
Flying on a Senior Level 5 team at the age of 12 and making it to the finals at the D2 Summit,

What is something surprising you learned about cheer that people who have never cheered may not know?
I have learned that it takes a lot of time, hard work, and dedication to cheer, especially for competition cheer. It is a hard sport with high injury rates.

What is your high school cheer team like? What is a favorite memory with them?
West Ridge Varsity is fun and exciting, especially when hyping up the students and fans at the ballgames, My favorite memory is competing at the TSSAA and UCA High School Nationals with my teammates.

How does high school cheer differ from your Top Gun Teams?
Top Gun Allstars is more intense, more competitive and has higher level skills in stunting and tumbling as a team.

What are the differences in the three teams you are on and is it hard to keep all 4 team's activities straight?
The differences in the three teams is levels and ages. I am currently on Senior 3, Junior 4 and Junior 5. The levels are determined by the skills in stunting and tumbling that are performed, with level 6 being the highest before college. The ages for Juniors are 8-16 and 12-18 for Seniors. It is hard keeping all four teams straight but I manage by being organized and having good time management.

What has your favorite cheer competition been and why?
I have to say it is a tie. The first one is the Champion Cheer and Dance competition in Concord, NC, where both my Senior 3 and Senior 5 teams won 1st place, Grand Champions, US Final bids and D2 Summit bids. The second one is my first D2 Summit Competition in Disney that same season.

With shows like "Cheer", do you feel like people get a correct or incorrect message about cheer life. Why do you feel this way?
I feel that when people watch shows like “Cheer” they do get a correct message about cheer life. I feel shows like that explain to people in the non-cheer world what hard work and dedication we have to have on a daily basis. This is a year round sport, with long hours, high intensity and mental and physical challenges.

Why did you choose Two of a Kind Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?

I chose Two of a Kind Photography because they are in best in my area. They are great to work with and you can just feel relaxed and comfortable while taking pictures. I loved most about them, is I was able to just be myself.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
It talked about my gpa but not the classes I take. I mostly take all honors classes. I have taken honors, Pre-AP, and AP classes. My first semester of sophomore year I had all one hundreds in my classes, while keeping up with all the practices for cheer. For competition cheer alone I practice three hours during the week and five hours on the weekend. I just want to show others that even though it can be hard at times, anything is possible if you just believe in yourself.

What is your favorite AP class and why?
Chemistry is my favorite. I enjoy science and the labs you have with Chemistry.

What else should we know about you?
I am very interested in becoming an Anesthesiologist. I have always been interested in the joining the medical field. I am currently in a Health Science class at school to help towards this goal. I am interested in the medical field because I want to help others and make a difference. I knew I didn’t want to be the one doing the surgery, but I still wanted to help so I knew that becoming an Anesthesiologist was perfect. So, I will continue taking health classes and working hard so I can become the best Anesthesiologist I can be.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Returning to cheer after breaking my leg and being out for 9 weeks. I overcame the fear and developed all my periods skills in a matter of a weeks with lots of determination and logging long hours in the gym.

Picture
Photography by Two of a Kind Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To first realize you are not perfect and you will have setbacks and fails in life but never give up. Work hard , give 110 percent in everything you do and know you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Hopefully cheering in college and working on my Bachelor degree in Science, stepping my way to becoming an Anesthesiologist.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Hunting deer and turkey with my Dad.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is making people laugh. No matter the mood, I always seem to make people laugh when they need it.

3 Things on your bucket list
To cheer at a D1 college, to go on an Elk hunt with my dad and to travel the world.

Who do you find inspiring?
My grandfather. His personality, heart of gold and willing to help another was cherished by everyone that ever knew him.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Each day, I strive to be like my grandfather, I work hard, always give 110 percent in everything I do, have determination to accomplish my goals and dreams, willing to always help others, be a teammate and leader, be respectful and caring, and most of all, I try to enjoy each day. By doing those things, I feel and hope that is how I inspire others.

You’re a lot of clubs! Which Is your favorite and why?

My favorite club is probably Key Club. I love It because I’m helping others in more than just one specific way. It has a meaning to more people and not just to me!

What do you do in NSHS as a member?
NSHS is The National Society of High School Scholars. This is just a recognition of what I have achieved as a student and where my hard work has gotten me!

What roles and responsibilities do you have in Key Club?
In Key Club, I’ve done many different things to help others in many different ways. I’ve done book drives, clean up days, and even a Christmas card day for the elderly in nursing homes!

What has been your favorite Book Club book and why?
My favorite book we read is probably The List. This book had such a great meaning behind it. It’s about these high school girls that post a list of the prettiest and ugliest girls from each grade. In the book, it picks out 8 or 9 girls specifically and shows how they’re affected by the list!

Photography by Laura Welsh Photography

Why did you choose Laura Welsh as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Laura because she was trying to get her name out there! She wanted to do a “Senior Rep Team” and help get our names out there, as well as the salon, Lightning Hair Lounge, that we work with! I looked at a lot of her work and it was always stunning! My experience with Laura has been nothing but fun and laughs. She is the most fun, kind-hearted person you’ll ever meet! I loved everything about it, but especially how easy going she is! I was camera shy and first, so she helped me out and now I am so comfortable in front of a camera!

We’d love to see some of your art! What Is your favorite piece you’ve created and why?
My favorite piece of art that I have made is this painting of some of the characters from Finding Nemo. I have made much more meaningful art pieces, but this one took me the longest and became my favorite because of how fun It looks!

What got you interested in American Sign Language?
Personally, I think It’s something everyone should be interested in! I want to go into the medical field. As you know, not everyone can hear or have certain disabilities. My goal is to be able to accommodate for all kinds of people so no one feels left out!

Picture
Photography by Laura Welsh Photography

What is NHS and what has been a favorite memory?
NHS is National Honors Society. This is a thing for High school students that have a certain GPA and have kept good grades! My favorite memory is probably just me working hard to get into this!

What has your greatest leadership opportunity been in these clubs?
They have taught me to work with others and contribute ideas with one another! It has taught me great things and how to work with a team! No matter what position I’ve been in, I’ve always had a great time and made new friends!

What have you learned about being a leader?
I’ve learned that everyone has different ideas, and you should try to incorporate all of them. Not everyone will want to do the same thing, but you can find a way to make everyone happy. I also learned that no matter what position you’re in, you’re not much different than everyone else. You are all working towards the same goal or idea.

What do you think is your greatest leadership quality?
My greatest leadership quality would probably be that I’m very well rounded. I get along with anyone, no matter what. I can work with anyone and work anywhere, and still make it work! I am always able to get along with everyone!

Picture
Photography by Laura Welsh Photography

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve had to accomplish was finding myself and gaining the confidence I have now. I have never gone through something harder than that. Figuring out who I wanted to be, along with finding the confidence for it, was the biggest struggle for me. I did It by learning that not everything or everyone is what you think or see. I learned that pictures are deceiving and no one’s perfect. I had to learn that everyone is beautiful, but in their own way, even me.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t think, just do it. Don’t hold back or be too scared, you will regret It later.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would want to be interviewed about my dream to become a marine life vet. This has been my dream since I was young. Most people think I am crazy to do eight more years of school, but I think it’s worth it so I can love my job for the rest of my life. So right now, I am doing everything I can to ensure my future and dream.

What are you doing now to ensure your steps for success?
Just trying to stay focused and do my research to get everything done so I can stay on the right path

What do you love most about marine life?
I love how unique they are. They seem so free and happy and live in a place I would love to live.

What will your main goal/focus be?
Trying to educate myself and others on the things we do that can potentially harm marine life. If we can change our habits, maybe we can do better.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My vision for the future. I was raised by a single mom and business owner who was successful in business and raising a child. I believe as a young woman; we can do both and be great at both. I want to be a vet which I know is a lot of school, and I want a family. Both take a lot of effort and focus, but in today's world I believe I can do both.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Ocean Conservation and reducing plastic. I have participated in beach clean ups and listened to lectures discuss the state of the oceans and it makes me incredibly sad. The amount of plastic and debris on our beaches and in the ocean is just frightening. If we could all make simple changes to reduce the amount of plastic ending up in landfills and the ocean, it would be a fantastic start to helping our earth and oceans for the future. That is one of the reasons I want to be an aquatic vet with an environmental science minor. If I can understand what needs to be done to protect our sea life, then I can help others make the necessary changes.

Why did you choose Madeline Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My Mom was looking to get some current professional photos done and she chose Lori. We had never met before, but we instantly clicked. She has a true gift in bringing out your personality and that is what makes such beautiful photos. Ms. Lori is so kind and genuine, I just love her!

Tell us more about Beta Club. What do you do in there and what do you love most about being a member?
I really love the people and things I do that maybe; I would not do if I was not part of Beta? It is service oriented, and they encourage you to volunteer in your community. I have served meals to the homeless, taught little kids to swim, and made blankets for senior homes. Really, it is about helping people. The club requires you to earn a certain number of service hours each semester.

What has your favorite project been in National Science Honor Society and why?

Well, this is new to us this year and we just started. But I would say so far it is making things from very few ingredients, like putty. I also like taking care of the guinea pig, Mr. Bentley

What is Youth Leadership Greenville? What do you do as a member and what are your roles and responsibilities?

YLG is about developing our youth to serve in leadership roles that are key to the future success of our community. It is only for Juniors in high school and each school has 2 or 3 representatives that meet monthly for a year, and we learn and serve in our community.

Share with us your swim career. When did you get started, what races do you swim, and which is your favorite?
I started in lessons really young, under a year. My mom said the water was my happy place. Once, when we are on vacation, I dove off a diving board after my older cousin. But I never dove before, and I was 4. So, after that I joined my first “little” swim team. Then, I was hooked. My favorite race is the 200 Butterfly

What is a favorite accomplishment in swim?

When I was 14, I competed in SC State swim meet and placed in the top ten for the 200 Fly

What will you be doing at the George Mason Leadership Conference in Washington DC and how did you get selected to represent?

It is a summit where students interested in environmental science and confirmation come together from all over the US. We meet and learn from professional Scientists, researchers, and scholars along with policy makers on Capitol Hill. I was selected based on my academics and my interest in conservation.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

I would say remaining an athlete. I was born with hip dysplasia and athletics are hard for me. I have physical limitations and they are painful. But I am so grateful to still be swimming. It is hard physically for obvious reasons but mentally, I do not progress as fast as my peers, and it can be frustrating for me. But I love being on a team and participating in a sport.

Hopefully in 5 years, I will be applying to Vet Schools and starting that education. I am looking forward to college.

I would say anything to do with animals. I love playing with them, training them, taking care of them and swimming with them.

Maybe Photography. I love taking pictures when I have time. I like the scenery and sunsets.

3 Things on your bucket list

.

Nomination & Photography by Images By Marie Moore
Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Katelynn Marie’s compassion for others, always seeking to do more, and standing up for those who can’t or won’t, is a small demonstration of her heart. Her drive and determination are contagious. Education has always been a focus in her life. From preschool-senior year her determination brought her Honor Rolls every year while maintaining a 4.0 GPA taking all AP courses. She plans to Major in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering with hopes to design military aircrafts to help better protect our troops. She plays women’s lacrosse and has committed to play for the University of Alabama- Huntsville.

What would you like to talk about?
I would love to talk about my family and future. You should know about my compassion for other people and my characteristic of being a natural born leader who loves working with others.

Tell us about your family.
In my immediate family there are four of us, but my extended family is really big. My mom is one of five and this has given me so many aunts, uncles, and wonderful cousins. We are all so close-knit and spend a lot of time together. We are a very faith-grounded family and use this as our guide throughout everything.

What do you love to do most with your family?
I love spending time with my family the most. My cousins and I do this thing we call a “cousin sleepover” once a month. This time we get to spend together allows us to recap what has gone on in the past month and bond. We spend a lot of time, making and eating great food, staying up late, and lots of laughing.

What is a favorite memory with your family?
My favorite memory with my family is spending the Fourth of July at the lake house together. Because we are such a close family, everyone comes down to the lake for the entire week and we spend so much time together on the boat, by the campfire, and watching fireworks. It is always so much fun to spend that week together.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville and major in aeronautical engineering. I plan to get my masters in 5 years and start an internship with Boeing my freshman year. I plan to use my degree to work on military jets to help ensure the safety of our troops as they fly them to protect us. I will also be playing lacrosse in the Gulf South Conference for the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Why did you choose this path and what are you doing now to ensure your success?
I chose this path because I have a love for jets and aircrafts as well as our US Military. With family members that have served or are serving in the military I have grown to want better safety to help ensure the soldiers safety and that they make it back home to their families. I am currently taking all AP courses to help me gain experience in the field that I want to go into. As well as, communicating with a couple of close family friends who are also aeronautical engineers to help give me insight on what I personally need to do to achieve my goals.

What do you feel is your greatest leadership skill and why?
I would say my best leadership skill is my servant leadership. I will never ask someone to do something that I would not personally be willing to do myself. As a leader whatever task I give you I will guarantee that I will do it with you right by your side. As a leader I never let my team or partners go through anything without help or someone by their side.

What has been your greatest leadership activity?
I would say my greatest leadership activity would be being a lacrosse captain since my freshman year, this leadership role I made sure to apply both on and off the field. I made sure that my team was always giving a hundred percent and if there were days when they couldn't give that I would make sure to pick up the extra percent and help them through it. I wanted to make sure that my teammates knew I wasn't just their captain on the field, and that I would be there for them outside of lacrosse whenever they needed me.

Why did you choose Marie Moore as your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Marie as my photographer because she has been a family friend for such a long time. My experience with her as a photographer was so awesome. She is such a fun, bubbly photographer that makes sure you get the best photos of yourself. She always makes you feel beautiful and makes sure that you feel confident when she is taking your photos. My favorite part of taking senior pictures with her is that she will customize and go out of her way to find spots to take your photos that will help express who you are. She makes sure that your photoshoot is specific to you.

Tell us about your lacrosse career.
I got started playing lacrosse my freshman year of high school. I have played a sport for as long as I could and once I got to high school I wanted to try something new. I am Native American and knew that lacrosse originated from Native Americans so I figured I would give it a shot and instantly fell in love. I play midfield but my coaches also will rotate me back to defense or attack whenever it is needed.

What is your team like and what will you miss most about them?
Both my school and club lacrosse teams have grown to be a second family of mine. We all have so much energy and love for the game that it makes playing with them ten times better. We are all best friends both on and off the field and I will miss seeing them and spending almost all our time together the most.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
It does not cover my past experiences and how I did not let them hinder my future or hold me back from achieving my goals. As well as how I have used my faith to help guide me through these past experiences.

Please share more about how your past experiences & faith helped shape who you are today?
One of my past experiences that I am still working on getting through was when my best friend passed away in a tragic car accident my second day of senior year. She passed away August 19, 2021, and it has been hard to get through it. We had played lacrosse together for years and she was the most bubbly and bright person I had ever met. She was very strong in her faith, and I have tried to imitate her faith to help get me through it. Without my faith foundation I would not have been able to find peace or get through this heartbreaking experience.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Self-love, this is a topic I believe many people my age struggle with. I would love to go in-depth on the topic and share my feelings about how every person deserves to be loved by not only others but by themselves as well.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Whether you tell yourself that you can or you can’t, you are right. Your mentality is one of the main factors that will help you get to where you want to be. Believe in yourself and nothing can stop you.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I am an artist; I spend most of my free time either drawing or painting. Art is like a release for me, and I am able to find peace in it. One thing that I have been able to do with my art is design tattoos for other people. I have also sent some customized art to storm victims when I sent care packages to victims in Iowa after the Derecho storm that hit there in 2020.

Issue 53 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jalie is inspiring because she is so dedicated to everything she does. She has been so hard working in school she even got to graduate early! She is dedicated to modeling to feel confident and to show others how amazing and powerful they truly are. She inspires me and many others to do our best because we can never fail unless we try!

Tell us more about getting to graduate early. How were you able to do this?
I was able to graduate early by setting a goal for myself. I knew since I was young, I wanted to graduate early to start my career. I took ad many extra classes as I could and studied really hard to be where I am today!

What are your plans after graduating early?
My plans after graduating early are to go to cosmetology school! After I get my license, I am hoping to go to a community college to get my business degree to hopefully open up my own business one day!

What else would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be interviewed about how does one feel beautiful even though we all compare ourselves to one another. I think being a teenager is very hard as it is and being an aspiring model can be very stressful too. I always remind myself that every single person is beautiful in every way. No one is made the same so we can all shine in a special way and that helped me focus on my goals and not get discouraged!

What do you think is the biggest struggle for teens today and what is your advice to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle for teens today is learning how to present yourself the same online and offline. It is such a struggle to be the same real authentic person on social media and in person. My advice is if people don't like you for who you are then that's okay. It is so rewarding finding people who believe in your true self.

What has social media and covid added to the struggle vs how have they possibly helped?
I believe covid hurt social media by not being able to gather with a group. I couldn’t gather with the girls I normally shoot with which meant less photoshoots for my photographer and myself. But, I also believe it did help in a way because we learned to be creative with what we have. Now we know all of these ways to talk to people over zoom and we have learned more things that technology had to offer!

How is being an aspiring model stressful, and how is it fun?
Being an aspiring model is stressful because you do put an overwhelming stress on yourself trying to be like the world known models. It is hard to stop and realize you are your own self and that you are amazing. Although it can be stressful it is so fun and rewarding. I have met so many people along the way and worked with so many new brands that it has opened me up to so many more opportunities!

Why did you choose Michael Brickens for your photographer?
Michael has the best energy. I reached out to him because his pictures were so authentic to each person he shoots with. Michael is there to make you the best you can be and believed in every one of his models and I’m so grateful to be able to shoot with him!

What was your experience like in the different locations and in the planning?
My experience in the planning was very fun and chaotic. There have been multiple times we have had to make a set out of nothing, and they have been some of my favorite photos so far!

What did you love most about the shoot itself?
I loved being able to create our own set that represents who I was. I was able to add things from home that we have made of things that are sentimental. The pictures were so beautiful!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a love for teaching! I have always struggled with anxiety in my school years. I've realized since covid how stressful things can get when you are growing up and having to go to school during a hard time. I find it very rewarding being able to help children focus on learning and trying not to focus on the stress that outside things can bring in the classroom!

Tell us about the opportunities you've received to teach.
I have gotten the opportunity to coach gymnastics. I did gymnastics growing up and I got the opportunity to coach. It has made me realize my love for teaching kids things and watching their eyes light up when they succeed !

What is something that may surprise those teens who have never had the opportunity?
Everything you do is rewarding. The struggles the fails may seem scary but at the end they are what matters the most in your career. They make you so much stronger.

What is a favorite accomplishment from teaching?
My favorite accomplishment is watching the kids get excited when they meet a new skill. I love how they all cheer for each other and spread the love. It makes me feel like I had an impact.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I could talk about anxiety and how important it is not to run from it but face it head on. Growing up it was very hard for me to make friends and go out. We never really knew what it was or why I was feeling those things. I went into high school and got diagnosed with anxiety disorder. I felt defeated for so long like I couldn't do anything. I one day went into modeling and fell in love with myself and who I am. I found the thing that made me happy and really started working on my anxiety and how to overcome it and not run away from it!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is overcoming my fear and anxiety of the camera. As silly as it seems it was such a struggle and I'm so thankful I got over it!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice is don't take no as a stopping point. You will get many "no's" in this industry but you cannot stop there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be graduated from cosmetology school and hopefully getting my business degree. But I ultimately hope that my modeling career takes off.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I have recently taken a love for making blankets. The big fluffy blankets that you can buy from target it is so fun to make, now I have so many blankets.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. go to Italy
2. zip line over a mountain
3. go to the Bahamas

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom. She is the hardest working women you will ever meet. She is a nurse and through covid and everything she has kept a positive attitude.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
All the struggles I have been through trying to fight the extreme anxiety that took over my life. I learned so much through figuring it out, it had helped me be able to talk to others through there nerves in the modeling industry or just everyday life.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Thank you for this opportunity. Many people don't get to do this, and I’m blessed to have come this far to be here today.
