Reagan Webb – Missouri
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Suzy Zollinger
Photography by
INfinite Smiles Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Reagan is an inspiring young lady because of her work ethic, intelligence, and commitment to achieving her goals. This is evidenced by her devotion to her passion of dance. Reagan has danced with a local studio for over 14 years. Each week contains hours of practice and traveling for competitions and performances. She has embraced the very definition of discipline, perseverance, and sheer grit. This is only one example of why I consider her to be inspirational. She also has achieved high academic success while participating in several activities including the tennis team and working part time at a local restaurant.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination leave out?
I feel that my nomination was accurate to who I am, but if I had the chance, I would highlight the service hours that I do at Camp Kanakuk. This past year I had the honor of getting to be a part of Mi7, a missionary to serve others for seven days. During those 7 days I got to truly be a servant for the Lord and help others along the way. The best part of the week was when I got to go shadow my teepee to help them grow in their faith. I also would add that in my high school I try to be as active as I can and help encourage my peers to get connected. Some clubs and activities I'm in are NHS, DECA, FBLA, FCA, dual credit, student council, Concert Chorale, Innovation Track through UCM, Student Leadership team at my local dance studio, the IN crowd through Infinite Smiles Photography, and my job at a local restaurant Heroes. Throughout all of this I have had the honor of being a leader and role model for my peers and younger kids.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would present on perseverance and overcoming adversity. This year has been rough and challenging on everyone especially the 2021 seniors. This year we've struggled with whether we're going to school, where we want to go to college next year, knowing if our gpa and act/sat scores are good enough, scholarships, and so many more. I feel that this year with COVID-19 has added extra obstacles to our daily lives than any other group of seniors. I would also talk about staying strong the remainder of the year. With being stressed out of so many things we have to remind ourselves that it's okay to take a break and to remember the things that matter the most.

Tell us about your life as a dancer. When did you start to where are you now with it?
I started dancing when I was 2 years old in a creative movement class. When I was in 3rd grade, I joined my studio’s competition team. I began to study all genres of dance and ended up falling in love tap. Now I am in the studio 5 days a week and share my love for dance with my students I teach.

What styles do you study? What are your favorite styles of dance and why?
I study all types of dance. I do lyrical, jazz, musical theater, tap, contemporary, ballet, hip hop, and I studied pointe for a while. My favorite style of dance is tap and lyrical. I enjoy tap because I like that I can make noise with my feet. The sounds that I can make with my tap shoes are always new and exciting. Lyrical is also exciting because I am able to express how I am feeling most.

What is a favorite memory from dance?
My favorite memory is being in rehearsals with my friends and having fun together. The best classes are the late ones after a long day of Sunday rehearsals because that’s when we're all tired and silly. As well as the competitions. We have all made some amazing memories together.

Picture

What keeps you motivated and how do you use that to impact others?
I am motivated because I want to excel in everything I do. Also, the best feeling is when I am getting ready to take the stage and I get a rush of excitement. I realize all my hard work will be showcased in this moment and my performance will leave a lasting impression if I do well.

How have your health issues affected your dancing?
My junior year of high school I was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. I was unable to dance during this year and had to sit on the sides watching my friends do what I love. I started a therapy program that helped me return to dance slowly, and then completely. It is still sometimes difficult to keep up with the pace of my dance classes.

How do you mentor younger children and why do you think it's important?
I think it is important to encourage and support younger dancers. I teach two dance classes during the week and try to build relationships with the younger dancers. I encourage them, and support them by attending their competitions and providing notes of encouragement and small gifts to commemorate events like the Nutcracker, or a Dance Recital.

You have a lot on your plate - what keeps you so driven to try so many different activities while holding a super high GPA & holding down a job?
What keeps me so driven and motivated is my parents. I’ve been lucky enough to grow up in a household that’s extremely hardworking and supportive. Knowing how badly they want me to succeed makes me work twice as hard. I’m confident that continuing to multitask and deal with stressful situations, I will be better prepared for the real world. Hopefully, I can meet their standards and continue to make them proud of me! My entire family has accomplished so much in life, I hope to join them very soon.

What roles and responsibilities did you have with the student council and what was a favorite activity within your leadership role & why?
In student council I was an active member. As a class I got to vote for school executive decisions, have a say, and overall help my school! My favorite activity was participating in the yearly blood drive. I had the opportunity to stand alongside students donating and making sure they were okay. I love taking care of people, being able to do that hands on was an amazing experience. I look forward to it every year! This yeah with the COVID-19 virus ongoing I’m not sure if I will be able to have the opportunity to participate. It breaks my heart but hopefully I’ll be able to help out!

With your activities, you have a lot of teams to contribute to. What would you say are your characteristics of a team player? What do you bring to the table?
As a member of both the cheerleading and lacrosse team I do have a lot of responsibility on my hands. For example, this year for cheerleading I was in charge of leading stretches and organizing cheerleaders and basketball players for Canfield vs Poland night. Poland is our rival team and this year we will be hosting our senior night during the halftime of that game. Pairing up jv and varsity cheerleaders alongside all the basketball players was a harder task! However, they knew I could do it! For lacrosse I’ve been told I’m one of the loudest and proudest on the team. I’m in charge of leading stretches before games and at practice! I get along with all my teammates and always have words of encouragement! I like to support my team to the best of my ability! I love all my teammates and fellow cheerleaders I am very proud of all of our accomplishments we’ve made together!

What is select female ensemble and how do you use it as an outlet for your personality?
Personally I use music as an outlet for my feelings. As a child suffering with anxiety, I struggled to talk about how I truly felt. Alongside writing I would sing songs that would relate to me. It made me feel together again. Singing in a female ensemble has only strengthened me and encouraged me to be myself. There’s a meaning behind every lyric, some people don’t always catch it. Every song has a meaning and it’s beautiful. I’m very blessed to have found singing and have had an amazing grandmother to be my number one fan. Sometimes people can’t understand what you feel, so why not sing it instead.

What do you love most about modeling at Jennifer Grace Studios?
I love having someone as caring, fun and talented as Jenny to keep me on an amazing team. Modeling with Jenny has boosted my confidence tremendously! Without her I’m not sure where I would be today! Jenny has opened so many doors of opportunity to me and for that I am grateful. The overall experience of meeting new people and creating friends along the way is amazing! I’ve built so many strong friendships and have even got to travel a little bit along the way! Jenny is not just any photographer. She is like a second mom to me. I’ve struggled a lot with image and personal issues that she has been able to help me with. She’s always just a text or phone call away. Modeling with Jenny’s team is not just fun, it’s family!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished occurred in 2019. There was a time where my sisters lungs collapsed, and she was almost taken away from me. During that time, I grew the strength and responsibilities of an adult. My parents were stuck with her for weeks in the hospital. I was left with school and my younger brother. Getting through all of that during the thanksgiving holiday was extremely rough. But at the end of the day, I kept my head high and overcame the worst. Luckily, everyone is in good health as of now!

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I waited a long time to be myself. I regret that decision deeply now! It took me ten years of trying to fit in to school to realize it was not working. If you just stay true to who you are you would not believe the doors that will open for you! Stay confident, keep a smile on your face, and don’t change for anyone but yourself!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I hope to be working on my masters in college after already receiving my bachelors from YSU! I would love to have a job where I can travel the world! There are so many places to see and things to do! Hopefully, I will find an amazing job within the travel industry. Who knows I might just be the next big travel writer or travel photographer! I do plan on moving around a lot! Wherever the road takes me is where I belong.

3 Things on your bucket list
Get married in my 20’s & have a baby boy!
Spend one New Year’s Eve in Paris
Go on vacation to Africa with my sister!

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mother incredibly inspiring! Throughout the years I’ve noticed that I’m becoming her! That sounds a little crazy I know, but we all have a little bit of someone in us! Her personality and confidence had help shaped and molded me into who I am today! I love her with all my heart and am so happy to have her in my life!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I’ve been told by a few that my confidence and compassionate personality is amazing. Many have said that just having me talk to them and listen has helped them tremendously. I will always take care of people whether they take care of me! I know what it’s like to go through rough patches in life, so being able to help others in points of hopelessness means the world to me.

Samik Krishnan

Samik Krishnan – Arizona
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by
Anjeanette Photography Phoenix
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Samik Puthucode isn’t just an amazing high school student who loves math- he also organizes a charity for glasses to give back! I was so encouraged by his heart of generosity- I have several older pairs of glasses that hopefully someone can use.

From Samik's website: "I have started with an idea to give away a couple pairs of glasses to local kids in Arizona, USA and to kids in Bangalore, India who couldn’t afford them. I also feel there is a need for helping people who have eye conditions such as Glaucoma, Cataracts, Bulging Eyes, Color Blindness, Crossed Eye, and Diabetic Macular Edema. I thought about this charity because I see many people that are older and younger, that have these eye conditions. Please help me in collecting eyewear and donating. Or if you can organize eye exams and related services to people in need in your own community. If you are an Eye doctor, you can be much more compassionate in organizing some events for free in and around where you live. If you have a loved one that is need of any of these services or has been through a tough time, you can see events that may be of interest to you on our website from time to time. Although we are based in the USA., we have a global reach with affiliates and friends in India and the continental USA and are always looking to do more with anyone that can and is willing to contribute. "

Please tell us more about your charity.
Onepair charity (https://www.onepaircharity.org) was created with a vision to help people with eye care, whether it is to find a pair of eyeglasses, to find doctor for eye exam/surgery. It all started with my thought of when in middle school, here in a suburb of Phoenix, AZ, to give away a couple pairs of glasses to local kids in Arizona, USA and to kids in Bangalore, India who could not afford them. With some personal history of to wear glasses for quite a few years now, and ever-changing prescription for teenagers, I also realized and saw the need to donate pairs that are not of use anymore to the needy. Having traveled internationally, to Europe/UK and Asia (India), I found this to be one way I could possibly make an impact, however small it may be. I hence, started to write to the larger nonprofits in this same area such as manufacturers like Essilor, and VSP Global, and other renowned bigger international organizations such as Lions International, to see if they would be able to help in my collection drives and recycling efforts, and further distribution to the needy. I was pleasantly surprised to see their kind responses and ability to be more than willing to help.
In parallel, I also talked to many of my parents’ friends and contacts who are Eye doctors, Ophthalmologists around the world, and run hospitals to see their interest. They were kind and more than willing to assist. One renowned eye hospital in India, which is one of the oldest prosthetics and specialty eye hospitals actually organizes recycling efforts for used eyeglasses in reasonable condition and makes them available to needy. This really made my effort seem worth it and being able to create an impact. Hence OnePairchairty was created and is thriving now.

How did you get it started? Did you do it on your own or did you seek out others to help?
As I have explained above, the initial thought originated in me, and then I solicited inputs from my Parents and their friends, to see if it would be something that could help and had some chance of being able to launch & succeed in the mission. With a lot of positive initial feedback, I then went ahead and created an initial website with details, and also wrote about it on my Blog. And that is how I got it started.

Picture
What were your biggest struggles and how did you overcome them?
It was initially to get inputs in a timely manner from friends of my Parents and their contacts, and eye doctors, and their time to think or talk about this. They are all busy individuals with a lot on their plate, however, everyone was very kind and wanted to get involved. Creating an initial website when I was in middle school was also a bit of a challenge, however my Mom helped out. We eventually used and continue professional small business (also run by a friend of our family)to help us out to now manage and maintain the site. Organizing annual or six-monthly collection drives has been my motive, although being in a school that encouraged it and were open to it in my middle school years, made it easy to get started with drives for collection. Before I was out of middle school, we organized drives for 2 consecutive years with great success. This also included 2020, when everyone was gripped with the pandemic.

Where is your charity now and what are your goals for its future?
Well, we have been continuing to organize collection drives for my charity, and like I said, even during the pandemic, it was so heartwarming to see how generous people are, and they think about giving back to the community. The most recent drive was in my middle school in March 2020 and that was in-fact the largest collection of eyeglasses so far! Very heartwarming! The plans for the future are to continue the efforts and helping out the needy as much as I can through contributions to the recycling efforts of the partners, we send them to. Also, one of the aims is to be able to raise some volunteer donations in terms of $$ by willing and able people, towards the surgeries for cataracts, or for prosthetics for eye, with all contributions directly going to the hospital in India.

Tell us about your journey with flying.
I got interested in flying at a very young age (3 or 4 years if I remember) primarily due to traveling internationally, every single year since birth (except 2020, of course , due to the pandemic), with my parents. This really interested me in airplanes at first and the amazing technology in aviation. I started reading about it, and following people that are avid travel bloggers, especially Sam Chui, a favorite, (shout out to Sam!) and reading and seeing their video blogs and web blogs. I also got started on simulators, again, my parents who encouraged me and go on real simulators around the world. I started using simulator software and got really interested and started enjoying it. So much that every week I just felt immensely happy when I did that. I continue to do this. One of my friends at middle school was also incidentally into real flying school, and he has also advanced at the flight school at such a young age. (He was a year older than me), and so that got me to now getting started at flight school, as the minimum age is 15 years to be starting flight school lessons.

What is your blog about and who is your target audience?
One of my hobbies alongside my school, was to write about interesting topics including things I did – basketball which I play and keenly follow (NBA), interesting places around the world, events in technology and similar. A nice way to share writings with friends and well-wishers is a blog and that is how I really got started. I try and keep up at it., although it sometimes is time management and needs time. My target audience is teenagers and above age group and I seem to have a good set of people that read and comment and encourage me. As I advance into being a high school sophomore and then junior & senior years, I intend to write on more invigorating topics in technology, medicine, economy and of course continue existing areas of NBA and travel.

I take jazz, lyrical, hip hop, ballet, and acro. Lyrical is my favorite type of dance. Dancing is my stress reliever, and I can get my emotions out thru dance. When we aren’t competing, we are performing at half time for high school and college basketball teams. During Christmas we have a yearly holiday show, The Grinch. This is one of the times that all ages and all different type of dance is performed. It so much fun for everyone!! My teachers and teammates have taught me how hard work pays off and doing things as a team only makes us stronger.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from dance?
One of my favorite memories has been able to dance at Disney World 3 different times. Such a fun and learning experience! I hope to be able to join their college program in the future.

When did you start teaching younger children, what style/s and what legacy do you hope to leave behind to this younger group?
I started being an assistant 2 years ago to the preschool classes and our boy team, Boss. I believe they have taught me more. Their smiles, laughter, and showing me what they are learning brings me joy. I love seeing them on stage dancing their hearts out. I hope that they see my love and commitment for dance and that I inspire them to love dance as much as I do.

Do you watch any dance shows or movies? Which is your favorite?
I watch Dance Moms, So you think you can dance, and World of dance. My favorite is World of Dance. I enjoy watching all the different types of dance from around the world.

Ayden King – Ohio
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography
by MacSnaps Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ayden King will be graduating this coming May and has over 32 hours in College Credit Plus from both Ohio University and the University of Akron. He spends much of his free time tutoring students of all ages. He is on the TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Math & Science) Competition Team, and in the Interact (Rotary sponsored) Club. He loves to Snowboard, work with coding and computer programing, and is currently a 4th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. He has received various awards and honors during his high school career. He has a very bright future ahead of him.
Picture
Tell us about Taekwondo:
I began Taekwondo around a month before I turned four years old was a way to help with my ADHD. I ended up enjoying it a lot and have stuck with it for almost 14 years now. I used to compete and even took third at nationals in Los Angeles before moving out of the competitive circuit. I've always just enjoyed what Taekwondo has brought to my life and constantly try to live by its tenets. This past summer, I tested for and received my fourth-degree black belt. In continuing my own Taekwondo journey, I have also volunteered and assist with teaching classes to help younger students as a mentor.
Picture
How did you become a programmer?
I began coding during my eighth-grade year after reading an article about a program called AlphaGo from Google. If anyone recognizes the name, AlphaGo was a program that taught itself to play the Chinese game of Go. This was impressive because of the countless numbers of potential game states in Go and because most strategies relied more on intuition than logic. Thus, in learning to play the game Go, AlphaGo had, in some form, captured the magic of human intuition. And, honestly, I couldn't grapple with not being able to understand how Google's team had done it. Thus, I began learning several different coding languages before eventually settling on Python.
I then spent my ninth grade year learning about and coding in Python. I think that the first program I wrote from scratch was a text-based Roshambo partner who would begin beating players who played the same hand each time. In other words, if a player continued playing rock, it would eventually start playing paper.
At the end of my freshman year, I switched to learning about calculus. It might seem a little cocky, but derivatives and integrals seemed easy in comparison to the math I was preparing for, the math of neural networks. Neural networks require a form of calculus called Matrix Calculus. Matrix Calculus is a specialized notation of multivariate calculus for matrices. To vastly oversimplify, it is made to collect all of the partial derivatives of a function with many different variables simultaneously. Standard multivariate calculus typically only deals with two to three different variables at a time and calculates the partial derivatives in succession. Standard calculus just takes the derivative of a single variable. Hopefully, that explains why regular calculus didn't seem particularly difficult in my mind.
It took me around three weeks to get through Calculus and Multivariate Calculus, but it took me around seven months to figure out Matrix Calculus. Even then, I was never as strong at it. The problem is that I couldn't find any material online explaining it, and even my Calc 1 professor felt that he didn't have enough experience with this specialized notation of calculus when I came to him for help. Thus, I was forced to just look up the code of other people's neural networks and reverse engineer how they'd taken the gradients. It wasn't a particularly pleasant process, but, eventually, I figured it out.
A few weeks after I figured out how to do matrix calculus, I discovered software like TensorFlow and Keras. In other words, I hadn't really needed to do all that work because there was software that would have done it for me. Still, it definitely boosted my mathematical ability by a lot. Even so, I began using Keras daily because it allowed me to experiment with architectures and different layer types on a whim.

What pivotal figures shaped you into who you are today?
Two pivotal figures shaped me into who I am today. Since their stories overlap, I’ll narrate each separately, to avoid entanglement.
The first one is my mother. Mom is permanently disabled from several autoimmune/genetic disorders. Before becoming disabled, she worked in a cath-lab, leading to my knowledge of medical terminology. Humorously, in preschool, my self-portrait drew chuckles from privy teachers. I spared no details: Lungs, Kidneys, Ribs, and more. Evidently, my drawing was unique amongst the sea of my friends' stickmen. Mom underwent surgery after surgery, year after year, for "King"-sized hospital stays, saddling her with a plethora of medical bills. Having worked for the state, she was ineligible for Medicaid. I worried about her immensely, I’d regularly forget to eat lunch at school. Asleep one night, both hips dislocated simultaneously. I'd known she’d been in pain but not how quickly her body was deteriorating. After swiveling her legs to the ground, I helped her to her car, Mom refusing to admit that she needed help. The degeneration was extensive: she needed bilateral hip replacements. That’s one story among many. Despite obstacles, she ran the PTA! As you’ve probably guessed, I’ll always admire Mom's perseverance and indomitable spirit.
Speaking of, the second one is my grandpa. PapPap was my father figure, role-model, and best friend from a young age. A former coal miner, he later shifted to a construction manager/engineer position for another company, despite no formal degree. He always made spending time with me a priority. This required unrivaled patience, given my ADHD tangents; luckily, he had the longest fuse of anyone. He fueled my interest in engineering and aptitude for tinkering. He taught me about circuitry, using mechanical tools, and running construction equipment. Tragically, five days before my twelfth birthday, PapPap was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer. Losing him was always inevitable, but I couldn't fathom fate being so cruel amid Mom's health. I’ll never forget hearing his incoherent whimpers on the ER phone. He fought courageously for two years, but that day was the day he lost the war and I lost my hero. He’ll always have a place in my heart, but I've learned to treasure those memories, not mourn the ones I never made. I'll always remember his aphorisms and one-liners, and I'll always admire his patience and insatiable appetite for knowledge.
Both pillars of my history influenced me in different ways: Mom showed me to get up, no matter how hard the fall. She also sparked my interest in the medical field and a desire to help others. PapPap showed me the value of patience and curiosity. He also stirred my interests in engineering and data science. With the addition of my self-taught coding prowess, Mom and PapPap's influences later merged into my love for biomedical data science.

Ashleigh Wells – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Lyons Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I am nominating Ashleigh today for her passion for dance and how she inspires others around her. I have known Ashleigh for about two years now. From our first shoot together to our most recent, she has grown a lot as a dancer and a person. She is a joy to be around and is a role model for those around her. The younger dancers at her studio love working with her and treat her like their big sister. She is hard working and loves to dance. She also teaches the younger kids at her studio how to dance as well. I look forward to watching her grow and share her passion in the years to come.

Please share with us your dance journey. How and why did you start and where are you with it now?
I started dance at the age of three at Dance Workshop. Before I started dance, all I wanted to do was dance. I would tap my feet and stand on counter tops anytime music came on. After my first dance class it felt meant to be. I have never stopped dancing since. I have competed in more dance competitions I can count, and I have been to the World Finals of Youth America Grand Prix four times in New York City.

What do you love so much about dance?
Dance allows me to express emotions I wouldn’t know how to deal with without dance. It’s almost like a therapy in a way. I also love dance because of its athletic nature. I’m able to stay active and fit while also staying flexible and healthy. Another reason I love dance is because of the discipline you learn in different dance styles/classes.

Picture
Photography by Lyons Photography

What styles of dance do you study, and which is your favorite? Why?
I study ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern, tap, and pointe. My favorite is ballet for sure! Ballet is the root of all styles. Without some sort of ballet training, you won’t make it in the dance industry. Ballet is the one style you have to take if you want a career in dance.

What ages/styles of dance do you teach? How has teaching influenced your dancing?
I teach ages 6-12 in the styles jazz, contemporary, modern, and ballet. Teaching has completely changed the way I look at dancing. It has taught me not to stress as much during master classes or just in any classes really. I used to get so caught up in what the teachers thought of me and if I was exactly how they wanted me to be. Now that I teach, I understand that all teachers really want is to see that you care, and they just want the best for you. Yes, teachers may seem harsh at times, but it all comes from their hearts and wanting you to succeed.

What legacy do you want to leave behind for this younger generation of dancers?
I want to leave a legacy of supporting my peers. I have struggled with jealousy issues in the past, and they taught me that I am getting nowhere by tearing down others to make myself feel better. When I support my peers’ success, I’m boosting my peers’ confidence, and I’m showing others the right way to act when someone else succeeds no matter how jealous you may be.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment with dance?
When I was 11, my solo qualified for the Youth America Grand Prix World Finals in New York City. This is a huge deal in the dance world. I was given lots of opportunities to get scholarships and summer/winter intensive invites through this experience. I was actually accepted into The Rock School for Dance Education Summer Program through one of the master classes I took at the World Finals.

Do you watch dance shows or movies? Which are your top favorites?
My top two favorite dance movies of all time would have to be Center Stage and Step Up! My favorite dance show would have to be Dance Moms! The movies and the show don’t really showcase how the dance world really works that well, but they are super entertaining and fun to watch! I totally recommend!

Tell us your dance story. When did you start, where and what do you study now, & what do you love most about it?
I started dancing at Kristine’s School of Dance when I was just three years old and now, I'm eighteen years old. All my sisters grew up dancing and it is something we all enjoy. This year, I am studying Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Lyrical, Jazz, and Hip Hop. I love the energy of the dance studio the most. The second you walk in, everyone says hi and it’s the best feeling after a hard day of school. We all know each other and are super close. I like to call them my family.

What opportunities has dance brought to you?
Dance has brought me the opportunity to have a place to be myself. At school, I keep to myself but when I go to dance, I can just open up and I know everyone will be there to listen and help. It has brought me new, amazing friends. I guess you could say dance has brought me the opportunity to be in this magazine.

What is a favorite memory from dance?
One of my favorite memories was during Friendsgiving last year at the studio. We all brought snacks and slept in the studio. We watched a movie through a projector and played card games. It was a night I don’t think I could ever forget. Another memory is small but when I received this question, I couldn’t leave it out. The girls and I make a lot of jokes and we are very close with our instructors and we could laugh for the whole class. Even though that might get us in trouble sometimes.

What is your biggest accomplishment or success in dance?
I think my biggest accomplishment in dance is finishing every performance knowing I put so much hard work into it. I have finished every stage rehearsal, dress rehearsal, and performance that I've committed too. I go to class every day and I rarely miss so I know I have put in as much work as I can.

Tell us about the dance classes you teach and the legacy you hope to leave behind.
I am a student teacher in a lower level Acrobatics class. I make sure they are ready to go. I also go through their warm-up routine. My role in their classroom is to make sure they never fall. I hope they remember me as, “Miss Alaina, who always caught me.” They are all beautiful and strong girls who have a lot of potential and I hope they continue to dance until they graduate like I will be doing.

Tell us about your passion towards the arts, performing arts and theater.
The arts have always been a huge part of my life. From early childhood, I always loved musicals and performers, and wanted to be on the stage or in the movie with them. I started dance at the age of 2, which then exposed me to a whole new aspect of the arts. I have gained so much appreciation toward those who pursue a career in the arts. So much, that I want to also pursue a career in that field. Unlike most theatrical performers, I didn’t participate in shows from a young age, focusing on my dance training instead. When I did begin working in the theater, I knew: that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life. The arts are also very underfunded and unappreciated, especially in my area. There are not many opportunities to pursue training or performance opportunities unless you want to travel. I am very lucky to have a mom who is up for weekend trips to New York City, where I do the bulk of my training. The pandemic has cancelled many of my trainings but has given me more opportunities to do Zoom classes with some incredible artists.

What are your highest accomplishments/what are you most proud of from each?
One of my greatest accomplishments is placing 5th overall in Publication Design at the FBLA Virtual Pennsylvania State Leadership Conference in April of 2020. Digital media and publication has always been something I was interested in, but I took the leap this past year to compete in the event. I placed 1st overall at our Regional Leadership Conference in December 2019 to my shock, as I was in fierce competition with people who work on digital media for their education. Being able to compete at the state level, and then to place in the top 5, was a complete shock to me and I hope to continue that streak in this year’s competition.

What are your goals for 2021 with each and how do you think Covid will affect them?
Some of my goals for 2021 vary from getting to work with more Broadway professionals and growing as a performer, to growing as a person, and of course graduating from high school and leaving home. Covid has really changed how I run my life. I have always been such a Type A personality, planning everything out to a T. During this everchanging time, I have begun to relax into my choices and have the outlook of “everything happens for a reason”. So even though so much of my junior and now senior years have either been cancelled, postponed, or changed drastically, I appreciate the little things that we can still do, and hope for the best in the future.

Tell us about Bolivar VFC and Indiana County Miracle League. What are they, what are your roles in each, and what do you love most about being involved in each?

Bolivar VFC is our local fire company, where my dad is actually chief. I have grown up there, helping my mom, who runs the kitchen and assist with all the fundraisers throughout my life. I joined as an inactive member at 14, continuing in my parents’ footsteps. I have always loved helping in the kitchen before events, making sure everything is just right with my mom before the doors open and all the people come rushing in.

Indiana County Miracle League holds a special place in my heart. They approached me back in 2018 to begin singing the National Anthem for them, which I happily accepted. The Miracle League is the County’s baseball team for those with disabilities, through the Pittsburgh Pirates Foundation. Every time I sing it never fails to put a smile on my face getting to see everyone have so much fun doing something they love to do.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind this year?
I would say that the legacy I would like to leave behind this year is just to be yourself and follow your dreams, no matter what people say. 2020 has been a rough year for everyone, but it has been a great period of learning who we are as people. The big things that were cancelled led the way for smaller, more meaningful occasions, which will matter more in the long run!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up and keep following your dreams. There may be times where everything around you seems to be against you, but it will get better and you will overcome. And the person you become will be even greater than the one before.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I hope to be working in New York City, on Broadway, or travelling the country on a Broadway National Tour!

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel as much as humanly possible,
Lead a Broadway show (and maybe win a Tony Award for it),
and be the best version of me I possibly can

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
A lot of time management and planning in advance. When Spring rolls around (my busiest time of year on a normal year), I always make sure I have everything mapped out in my planner and phone so I don’t forget someone or something.

The Nomination: Ally Smith, a 17-year-old senior at Manchester Valley High, has excelled in all Honors and AP classes while assisting classmates with organization and studying. She has shown her leadership skills in the National Honors Society, Student Government Association, and Engineering Club, in addition to participating in the competitive dance team, D&J Dynamite Dance Company.
What would you most like to be interviewed about?
Maintaining a positive outlook during the pandemic and in life in general.

How have you maintained a positive outlook & what advice do you have for your peers?
For me personally, it has been a lot about the way I have thought about things. It can be very easy to start thinking negatively about life when everything is so unpredictable, especially during the pandemic. By focusing on the future and what is yet to come, I have been able to stay positive and look for the good in every day.
Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Throughout my high school career, I have maintained straight A’s in primarily honors and AP classes and, in addition to my academics, I have put a lot of time into my community involvement and participation in a competition dance program. As a member of many clubs and organizations, I have been able to use my time to benefit others such as younger children in summer camps and in my dance company. Through my involvement, I have been able to inspire others to become engaged in their community as well.

Why is getting straight A's important to you?
Throughout high school I have always pushed myself to do the best that I possibly can. By taking advantage of my classes and the support of my peers, I have been able to be successful and do well in school. It has been important to me as it has something I’ve always worked towards.

What leadership opportunities have you had with younger children and why do you feel others should become involved in their communities as well?
I have been a camp counselor on many occasions along with being a leading member of a competition dance company. With dance, I have encouraged younger girls to keep working towards their dreams while having fun! I believe everyone should become involved in their communities in any way they can. You can have such an impact on the lives of others, even as just one person.

Please share with us your dance journey. How has it helped you become the person you are now?
I started dancing at age three and have now been a part of a competitive dance team for 10 years. I have done everything from ballet to hip hop, but my absolute favorite is tap! I have had to work very hard to make it to where I am in dance today, but I couldn’t have done it without my dance teachers and teammates. They have taught me so many lessons about perseverance and dedication that I will forever remember. I have been able to inspire others through dance to never give up.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I could present a topic to a group of peers on ways to get prepared for the college process. I have learned the importance of staying organized when researching different options and schools during the final years of high school through my own college search.

What else do you want your peers to know about getting prepared for college?
It can be hard to know what you really want at such a young age, but no matter what, it is important to do something that you are interested in. There are so many different options making it important to look into a variety. Since the college you decide on may end up being the place you spend the next four years of your life at, it is crucial to find a place that you love.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
No matter what obstacles get in your way, always persevere. There will be people and events that try to stop you from getting where you want to be but focus on your goals and always push through.

Peyton Eanes

Picture

Peyton Eanes – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Delynn Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: It is with great honored that I recommend Peyton Eanes as strong candidate for your consideration. I am awed by Peyton's success – both by her academic and athletic achievements and how she demonstrates her love for others through service. Her progress through high school is most impressive including her academic achievements and her maintaining the highest GPA for three years. Her academic diligence is proof that she will be a trustworthy and competent candidate.
Peyton is hardworking, reliable, determined, responsible, invested, focused, and intelligent. She has strong values that she will not compromise. This has aided her development as a leader. Her leadership resume includes positions such student council president, varsity cheerleader, volleyball captain, sports camp coach, and preteen camp counselor. Peyton understands the importance of her education and firmly grasps the value of a community service and teamwork logging over hundreds of volunteer hours.
Peyton has excelled in school and in the community– it would take pages to list her successes. I have had the opportunity to interact with her on a regular basis and during this time, I have observed Peyton's leadership, her mature discernment, and her ability to thoughtfully verbalize complex concepts. I have also seen her apply these to her life.
She is most deserving of your consideration. I give her my highest recommendation as you seriously consider her as a strong candidate.

How have you achieved the highest GPA for three years at your school? What or who do you attribute your drive for academic excellence?
As a child, my parents pushed me to academic excellence. By instilling high scholastic standards in me at a young age, they helped me form good habits and make good grades. Achieving the highest GPA for my first three years of high school and, hopefully, my last year as well has not been easy. I have spent many hours studying when I wanted to be out with friends or watching Netflix, but I know it will all be worth it to get into the college of my dreams. Setting time aside every day to study is essential, but the main thing is not being too hard on yourself when you fail and try again next time.
Picture
Photography by Delynn Photography

You've had many leadership roles. Which is the most noteworthy/memorable, and why?

My most memorable and favorite leadership memory is being a summer camp counselor at Trinity Pines Baptist Encampment. For three summers in a row, I got to attend a pre-teen overnight camp and lead a group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade girls. It is my absolute favorite event of the summer because I get to teach these girls about the love of Christ and show them how to love and build each other up. We always spend hours talking, playing sand volleyball, swimming in the lake, and doing all the fun activities planned out for them. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my girls make everlasting memories and build lifelong friendships.

What do you think is one thing every great leader should do?
Listening to what the people around you are saying is probably the most important thing a leader can do. Without hearing what they think and adjusting how you lead to fit the group, you can never be an outstanding leader. Leading only by doing what you believe to be the best can lead to discontent followers and a weak work ethic. By listening to the people's opinions and suggestions and adapting the way you teach, you can become a great leader that inspires everyone they meet.
Picture
Photography by Delynn Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Study hard, have fun, relax every now and then, and enjoy life!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five year years, I plan to be finishing up my doctor of physical therapy and looking for a job. Hopefully, I will be able to start by working as a physical therapist at a major university such as the University of Texas at Austin and then work my way up to the NFL or NBA

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to go scuba diving, go on a road trip through every state, and look out over Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

The Nomination: Kyleigh Dupuy is the epitome of love and grace. Her fearless approach to life is to work hard and love harder. Her curious nature is unrivaled. She is always open to exploring new ideas and try new things. Her love for animals is being fostered by being a member of Klein Collins FFA, where she is raising 3 lambs and a goat! Being a varsity cheerleader allows her persistence to shine through. Her generosity and compassion are demonstrated through community service involvement through National Honor Society and Legacy League. She continues to inspire all who know her!

Tell us about your cheer career. How and when did you start up until who you cheer for now and what you love about cheer so much?

Cheerleading has quite literally been a lifelong commitment for me. I began cheerleading when I was only three years old, and my first coach took me under his wing. He pushed me to be the best athlete I could possibly be and didn’t take anything less from me. I competed on his teams until junior high when I was eleven or twelve years old and I decided to pursue school cheerleading. I was burnt out, exhausted, and getting injured left and right, so my parents and I decided school cheer might be the better route for me. I then moved from the town of Vidor, TX to Spring, TX where I continued my cheerleading career and am still doing so on the Klein Collins Cheerleading Team. I love that cheerleading is my safe space, no matter what else is happening in life I know I can be successful in my sport.

What is one favorite memory from cheer?
If I had to choose one, I would say my all-time favorite moment from cheerleading would have to simply be touchdowns. There is no other feeling like watching your friend run into the endzone, scoring a touchdown, then turn to your teammates and seeing everyone’s huge smiles while being embraced in an unforgettable hug. Those moments are memories I will carry with me forever.

Please share with us about your love for FFA. What are your roles and duties in it and what is a major accomplishment you have felt as a result of belonging?

I have been a member of the FFA since my sophomore year, and I am now a senior. I raise lambs and goats through FFA, compete in CDEs, and I am currently working towards my CVA. I am incredibly passionate about animals, so naturally, I take the most pride in the animals I raise. However, it is not the pretty ribbon at the end of the livestock show that I am proud of. It is my hard work being paid off through my animals behaving as they should during the livestock show, and being able to show off the connection we’ve made as well as the hard work I had put into them the previous months.

What is Legacy League and what responsibilities do you have with it? What do you love most about being a member?
Legacy League is a volunteer organization created for the bonding of mothers and daughters. As a member of Legacy League, I am expected to attend meetings, attend events like Fashion Show and Legacy Ball, and acquire at least 15 hours of community service.
There are two aspects of Legacy League that I especially love. First, I love that it gives me the opportunity to connect with and serve my community. Lastly, I love that it allows me and my mom to spend time together since quality time is easily lost within our busy schedules.

What are your plans for college?
For college, I plan to attend Tarleton University in Stephenville, TX. This school targets my passions, animals, and cheer. Tarleton has a prosperous D1 cheer team and has a huge name in agriculture.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to stand strong in your morals and beliefs, and keep your head up because you never know what’s coming your way.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I expect to still be in college, working towards my doctorate degree to become a certified veterinarian. However, I expect to be working at a vet’s clinic as a technician.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

If I had to present anything to my peers I suppose it would have to do with animals because I have learned much knowledge about them and could give a passionate speech.

3 things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list would be sky diving, swimming in a shark cage, and having the opportunity to travel the world to learn about and see all the different species of animals.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my favorite Ag teacher, Mr. Resendez inspiring, because he never backs down from a challenge and always puts his students first as humanly possible. I’m extremely grateful to have him in my life as a role model.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I inspire others due to my hardworking nature, ability to persevere through the hardest of challenges, and nonapologetic personality.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I keep my schedule straight even though I am busy by being sure to lay out all of the day’s tasks and focusing on one thing at a time.

Sarah Robinson – Mississippi
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sarah Robinson has overcome a lot of obstacles in her life. From being born at 7 1/2 weeks premature, to being the leader of the pack, she is awe inspiring to me. Sarah weighed 3.4 pounds and fought asthma and is now an amazing athlete and roll model for other peers. She was chosen as one of the members of the 2020 Semper Fidelis All American Team to represent the state of Mississippi. Seven years ago, her father had a life-altering accident. She has stepped up to the plate and helped him with running the family business. Sarah is an all around good girl and is very well deserving of this award.
Picture
Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography

What do you think is the biggest influence you had to overcome all your obstacles to become the amazing athlete and role model you are now?
I guess being born a ‘preemie’ was the first big battle for both me and my parents. Coming into this world 7 weeks early at whooping 3 pounds set the stage for me to be a fighter. My father was the first to hold me. That bond has never been broken. I draw strength and encouragement daily from my dad. He instilled in me the drive and determination to work thru the setbacks of asthma, working out and building endurance. He never treated me as a fragile little girl. He taught me to be gritty and that it was ok to be an aggressive competitor. When I watched my dad race dirt bikes, I knew that’s what I wanted to do, and he was more than a willing teacher.

Tell us what sports you play:
Since I was a small child I have participated in organized sports, whether in a league or at school. Soccer, dirt bike racing, gymnastics, dance, track and field and shooting are some of the sports I have enjoyed. My soccer coach, Lyndon Cain has greatly impacted by life and truly inspired me to be ‘more’ than just an athlete. He has taught me responsibility and commitment. He stresses the importance of ‘teamwork’ yet at the same time he ‘pushes’ us each individually, to always give just a little bit more, to set the bar a little higher so ‘WE’ can reach our full potential and stretch our limits, mentally- physically and socially.

Picture
Photography by Randy J Williams

What is the 2020 Semper Fidelis All American Team and what are your roles and responsibilities as a member to represent the State of Mississippi?
Through soccer I have learned to not only be a player but also a leader and mentor. There is more to school than just sports. Coach Cain nominated me to represent my school in the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis program last winter. His nomination was based on my participation and leadership in sports, my involvement in our community and maintaining high academic standards. The motto of the Marine Corps is “Always Faithful”. As a student athlete I hope to exemplify dedication to my studies as well as my sports, staying true to myself and my beliefs.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’d be the first to admit I am a tomboy at heart, but I also have a girlie girl side! As a small child I loved gymnastics and dancing. I am a ‘Bravette’, a member of our high school dance team. For the past 4 years I have thoroughly loved the Friday night lights, the football games and then supporting our high school basketball teams. Dancers have a little bit of a competitive nature too. Our squad is small in number but big in heart and it is a sisterhood that I will always cherish.

What do you want us to know about your love of cows? What got you so interested and what keeps you so passionate about them now?
I think my love for cows began when I went to our County Fair when I was only 2 days old. My "Grandpa" got me started showing cows when I was only 3 years old. I have shown every year since then & it has given me the opportunity to meet lots of people & learn many life lessons. Every year I have been eligible to go to the State Fair, I have had the opportunity to win a trip! The highlight of my showing has definitely been winning Grand Champion of the State Fair this year even though it was a Virtual Showcase.

When did you start cooking/baking and what is a favorite memory?
I started baking with my aunt when I was in daycare at her house. My favorite memory is of her putting the leftover frosting on our fingers so we could lick it off. She is now a professional chef.

Why did you choose a chef or a baker as a career path and what are you doing now in preparation?
I have chosen to become a chef/baker because I love to cook. Someday I would love to own a business/restaurant with my aunt. To prepare for my career path, I have taken the time to become Serve Safe Certified & I have taken all the baking classes I possible can in school.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I like showing or helping younger kids learn especially when it comes to showing cows & sports. I want to help them find their passion similar to my passion for cows!

We love that you are a mentor for kids about things you love. Where do you get a chance to leave a legacy and what is a favorite memory mentoring kids?
Even with Covid this year, I was able to be a Teacher's Assistant in a 2nd grade class. I have been able to help them with their work & read books to them which so far have been about cows! It has been so fun seeing their eyes light up when I come in the room or log onto the computer!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I want to have graduated from college with a culinary degree & be working in that field.

Who do you find inspiring?
My Grandpa Joe is my inspiration. Grandpa passed away a little over 5 years ago from cancer & we miss him every day. He always worked hard & showed us that you need to work for what you want. He loved teaching others & always had the answers or knew where to find them. Even when he was battling cancer, he always made time for his grandkids. He taught us it's always important to have HOPE! Always hope for the future & follow your dreams!

Nomination by Layla Olson
Photography by Jennifer Didio
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Emily Olson is an amazing child. She had a brother that is special needs and has defended him in many situations throughout their lives. She wants to be a child psychologist/ therapist to assist children like her brother. She is a motivated student and competes with a local dance team. She is super kind to everyone (a lot of younger children) look up to her. She continues to impress us every day.

What inspired you to want to work in children’s therapy?
My brother has disabilities so I have seen how cruel and closed off adults can be to a child like my brother. This led me to develop the understanding that maybe it is not just my brother adults don’t understand. A lot of adults don’t try to understand what is truly going on with their children, they may seem happy, but all children need someone to talk to an open up to. I figured I could be that person and help these children with their problems that some adults do not have time to focus on.

Tell us about what you are doing now to help you prepare for that occupation in the future.
I decided to take a psychology class with Carroll Community college to help me better prepare to deal with people and their minds. Psychology explains a lot of why people act the way they do, and I felt as though I can relate those topics to children. I used to work with children at summer camps, and dance classes, but due to covid I had to stop. Those experiences also helped me to observe behavior of children and try to figure out why they act the way they do.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

I would talk about how unrealistic beauty standards are in today’s society, because a lot of people tend to believe whether they are men or women that if they do not look a certain way, they are not beautiful, but I completely disagree with that and I want my peers to know this too.

What is the main thing others should know about unrealistic beauty standards?
Unrealistic beauty standards lead people to want something that is impossible to achieve, it is okay to want better for yourself, but you should do so in a healthy way. You should take care of your body, do not push yourself, drink water, and change your diet if you want to but make sure to not restrict yourself. If you do not want to change your diet or exercise that’s okay too, live your life in the body you were given because all bodies are beautiful.

Please share with us your dance journey. Where did you start and where are you now? What do you love best about it?

I started dance when I was three years old at NCRC a non-competitive dance company, I performed at many recitals. When I got to the age of 8 or 9 I saw a single production put on by the competitive dancers and I knew that’s what I wanted to do too. The next year I joined the competitive dance team D&Js. I started out in the lower groups made great friends; I found a family within that studio. I tried every different genre of dance, but I decided my favorites were tap and hip hop. Each year I worked hard to get to higher and higher companies, and now I am in the highest hip hop, and tap group. I worked hard to get into the dances I am in now and have come a long way from where I was when I started 7 years ago. I love that family I developed in the studio, and how every time I go in the stress leaves my body, for the few hours I am there I can just let go.

What is your favorite dance memory?
My favorite dance memory is each time we would go on stage for our award sessions. Each person in our company would gather together excited to hear the results and placements of each group. Everyone would cheer and congratulate each other. Our whole team for most of the sessions were together we would dance on stage joke around and cheer each other up if we did not do as good as we had thought.

How has covid changed dance for you and your classes?
Covid caused us to be out of the studio for months and be not able to compete at any competitions. I had to adjust to dancing in a closet instead of a big open studio for a while (I am not joking it was an actual closet). Now that we are back at the studio, we are there for less time, and there are not as many classes. Many people who once all danced together are now separated into smaller groups.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Getting to the higher group in hip hop was one of the hardest things I have ever accomplished. In fact, for a few years when I tried out, I did not make it. I do not give up however, so I continued working and practicing, and giving all the energy I had. I put so much work into getting to where I am in hip hop, if I had given up, I would have never gotten there.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Didio

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

As cliché as it sounds never give up. The things you want to achieve may seem impossible at first, but you can get there if you continue to work for it. Push yourself work as hard as you can and if you make a mistake, put it in the past and move on there is no point in focusing on mistakes you made. When people make a mistake, they tend to think it the end of the world, but it is not just keep working for what you want and you will get there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope I am on the path of my career and have a job that either involves children’s therapy or will lead to it. I see myself in a happy relationship not only with a significant other, but with friends and family. I will have a good support system and figure out decisions involving where I will end up living as I go.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I enjoy drawing and even painting sometimes, I consider myself to be a creative person, so anything creative I can do.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Most pictures I see I can draw from just looking at them, usually cartoon types of pictures.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to New York and see a Broadway show, go skydiving, see the grand canyon

Who do you find inspiring?
My oldest brother, I have seen every hard thing he has gone through in his life and I know he does not think I notice, but he was able to work hard to get where he is now, and he still is working to accomplish more. One day I want to be as smart and hardworking as my brother is.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my kindness inspires others to be more kind to each other. I know what it is like to have people be unkind to you, and I know I am not the kindest person in the world, but I truly hope I do inspire others to be nicer to one another.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I usually have to write down things to remember them. I also choose a day to do each task and try to give myself some break days. For example, I may decide on a night I do not have much dance to do more of my assignments than I normally could. I also find days I can hang with friends or my boyfriend and try to make sure they do not clash by letting people know the days I am actually available.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I do not think there is anything else I would like to share, just excited to be participating.

Sophie Savell – Mississippi

Picture
Photography by Carliann Photography

The Nomination: Sophie Savell is the hardest working teenager I know. She babysits constantly so she can help her family support her, but she also runs three small businesses from her home. During the Fall of 2020, she used her social media influence through her businesses to raise money to fund 131 Operation Christmas Child Boxes. Sophie is the very definition of an Inspiring Teen, and watching her makes me want to be a better woman.
Picture
Photography by Carliann Photography

Tell us more about what you have done and how you went about doing it involving your three small businesses.
When I was thirteen, I found the love for jewelry and wanted to share my style with people around me. My mom was a jeweler so she had all the supplies I would need. I started my Instagram business that day, and now I have shipped to over thirty states and made more than one thousand five-hundred pieces of jewelry. Today, I not only have my jewelry business, but I run a clothing account, and co-run a shop with my best friend that is a gift shop with completely customizable items aimed toward gift giving. I have loved every minute of making each item by hand, packaging the order, and getting to take it to the post office.

What volunteer opportunities have you had with the elderly and small children and why are they so important to you?
My heart has always been in wanting to help the elderly and children in need. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, and going to church with them is where I developed my love for helping the elderly. I have worked multiple vacation bible schools and had to help the older ladies with decorating, cooking, cleaning, and taking as many steps for them as I could so that they did not have to. My love for helping the children in need grew when I watched an Operation Christmas Child video one day. Realizing that I had more than I would ever need, I wanted to help the other children immediately. This past year I was able to help one-hundred and thirty one children around the world receive gifts. Both are so important to me because it seems today that there are less people who want to help them, so my goal is to not only help them myself, but to expand the help they get from the people around me.

What do you want us to know about Integrity and Perseverance?
Growing up I was always told to do what is right, even if no one was watching. I let that stick with me, and I always did what I thought was right. I never gave up and kept working towards my goals. It turns out someone is always watching you whether it's a person, someone watching you through a camera, or just through social media. Babysitting children has taught me to have even better integrity and to be a better role model. Given this opportunity today, I would love to inspire someone to persevere and to have integrity through whatever it is they might be going through.

Socrate Loginidis – Connecticut
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by
A Harts Eye Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Socrate Loginidis has always had a passion for fishing, starting when he was a toddler. He participated in an after-school fishing program in 5th grade through middle school and then spent 2 years in high school as an instructor and mentor to the younger aspiring fishermen.
He was inspired to start learning the guitar after having been given an autographed guitar from Brad Paisley at the very first concert he attended. Socrate volunteers with the Best Buddies club in his school, to encourage socialization of his developmentally challenged peers. Socrate is a senior along with his twin brother Yianni.
His future goal is to study marine science and eventually become employed with the Federal Department of Environmental Protection.

What got you interested in fishing and what do you still love about it now?
The thing that got me into fishing the most when I was younger was my parents and neighbor. As a little kid I would always walk down to the lake in my pj’s and catch humongous large mouth bass. My neighbor and parents would fish with me when they could, and it became and activity we all enjoyed.

What is your favorite memory from fishing?
One of my favorite memories from fishing was when I got the chance to go bass fishing on my neighbor’s inflatable boat. On this particular fishing trip, we were fishing close to home and I happened to hook into a large bass. The bass was so big that I never got to see it because it was fighting so hard. The fish took me under the boat and got the hook stuck in the side of it. We rushed home and laughed off.

Tell us about mentoring younger kids in fishing and why you love passing on the sport.
Growing up fishing was not a sport that I just took to on my own. Through the mentoring of my neighbor and family was the passion for fishing born. As I got older, I became more independent in the sport. I got a kayak and eventually a boat to help me better understand my lake and where the best fishing spots were. Fishing for a while was a solo endeavor and I grew bored of fishing alone. As i began mentoring younger children in the sport I started to see how I enjoyed seeing smiling faces when hooking into fish and how happy families were of me. This was how the passion to fish and mentor was born.
Picture
Photography by A Harts Eye Photography

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My next favorite activity besides fishing is playing music, to be specific guitar. When I turned 13 my mom took me to my first ever concert. It was a Brad Paisley concert held inside Mohegan Suns wolf den arena. I was super excited and was having a great time until a headache started to form from the loud music and crowd. During one of the intermissions of the songs I was greeted by the manager of the Brad Paisley tour and was asked if I would like to receive a live signed guitar in-front of the crowd. Me and my mom were more than excited as we were escorted to the stage. Ever sense then my love for music has stemmed from that concert and that guitar.

What do you find inspiring?
I find environmentalists and conservationist very inspiring. These kinds of people are always inspiring to me because unlike some people they are motivated by ethics for the environment. My dream is to pursue a career where not only I can mentor the community about the environment but also protect it for future generations to enjoy.

Tell us your dance story. When did you start, where and what do you study now, & what do you love most about it?
I started dancing when I was only 2 years old and began a competitive team at 4. I have danced for D&J’s Dynamite Dance Company my entire life. I started in a ballet class for 2-3-year-old and I know train in ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, lyrical, ballroom, and my most favorite style, tap. I love that dance has provided an outlet for me for so long to be able to do something that takes away all of my stress. I also love that it has allowed me to travel so much to meet so many amazing dancers and choreographers all around the world.

How has dance changed you over the years?
Over the years, dance has formed me into the person I am today. Without the incredible support from my amazing teachers along with my family, I would not be the responsible person I am. Being at the studio for long hours every day has forced me to have really good time management skills in order to keep up my good grades in school. I also work and assist at my dance studio whenever they need me and I even teach a solo and two duets that will compete on stage. I always try to be an inspiration to the younger dancers to keep pushing even when it's hard because that is what all the incredible dancers before me did.

What opportunities has dance brought you?
Dance has brought me so many incredible opportunities throughout the years. At one point, I was a part of the American Tap Company which represents the Unites States at an incredible competition against all other countries. I am also in 3 tap videos with the Jam Youth Project, another tap group. By training hard and always being at the studio, my teacher allowed me to assist with younger classes which have eventually led me to teach. I have also worked with many choreographers and contestants from So You Think You Can Dance by attending conventions.
Picture

What is school like for you while spending so much time at dance?
For me, school is still very important even though I love to dance so much. I would never sacrifice my grades, even if that meant staying up super late to get all my work done. Dance has motivated me to do better in school because it is important for me to be able to do my best at everything I do. I also try to miss the least amount of school possible for dance but when we have a competition far away, I would have to miss Friday or leave early on Friday but we only had 3 competitions a year so I didn’t miss much for dance.

What would you like to share with us about girls working in the Sports Industry?
There are so many talented women in the Sports Industry and I can’t wait to join them in 4-5 years. I love watching football and am so fascinated by everything involved specifically the draft the college players go through to get to the NFL. There aren’t many women currently working in the Sports Industry but there is more than ever before which shows that it is growing in a good way. My ultimate goal is to be a Sports Analyst in the NFL.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I won 1st place at Imagine National Dance Challenge Nationals in Hershey, PA out of 180 15-19-year-old, and I was only 15. I practiced my solo so much because I wanted to get in the top 20 but they announced me as winning the Technique award, the most important part of your score, and I couldn’t have been more excited to be named the National Champion 2019.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To always practice and try and inspire the younger people around you because everyone wants to have someone to look up to and simply saying Hi to someone can make their day.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself either working for the NFL or working for a specific NFL team at an entry-level position to eventually work my way up to Sports Analyst.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to travel and go to the beach but those aren’t always easily accessible, so I also love shopping.

3 Things on your bucket list.
Go to Hawaii, go to Greece, Become a Sports Analyst

Who do you find inspiring?
All of my dance teachers and my parents.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think others love my dedication and notice my dedication and see how helpful I am to my dance teachers and one day they want to be the assistant.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I use Google Calendar but I also have a pretty good memory which helps a lot.

Tell us about your soccer career. When did you start, where & what position do you play?
I have been playing soccer for a total of 6 years. I first started playing soccer in the 7th grade. When I first started playing, I played defense but once I moved up to varsity I began playing midfield and striker.

What is a favorite memory from soccer?
I have made a lot of memories playing soccer in the past couple years, but I think my favorite memory would be when I scored my first goal off a header to tie the game up in the second half.

Tell us about your role in NHS. What are you most proud about being a member?

I am a member of NHS with about 20 other people from my school. We volunteer 20 hours as a group each year in our community. We also do 20 individual service hours a year. Last year for my service hours I helped my uncle coach a girls’ soccer team. I am proud to be an NHS member and help my community out.

That's so cool you got to go to Mexico. Tell us about your mission trips there. What were your conditions like and what did you get to do there?
Every year during the summer I get the chance to go to Nogales, Mexico with my church. Nogales is a very poor and neglected part of Mexico. When you go to Nogales you realize how lucky you are to live in the United States as they don’t have the luxury of having simple things that you’d think most people have. It makes you realize how lucky we are and thankful you are to have things like running water and toilets that flush. I really enjoy going to Mexico and helping the community there. We do things like paint houses, make concrete floors for them, and set up stable houses. I’d encourage anyone who has the chance to go on a missions trip to go and see how God can work in your life.

What did you love about it so much that you wanted to go back?
I loved just helping the community and spending time with the people. I also enjoyed seeing how God used that trip to work in my life.

Picture
Nomination & Photography by Sherri Fox Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I volunteered for childcare at my church. I volunteered as assistant coach for a girls soccer team.

What do you love about volunteering for childcare at your church?
I just love having an opportunity to give back to the church in anyway I can and I think that helping in childcare is one fun way to do that.

How did you get involved in assistant coaching for a girls' soccer team? What has a favorite memory with them been?
I got involved in coaching the girls’ team because I really enjoy being around the game of soccer and my uncle happened to be coaching a JV team that year. I made some good memories there but my favorite was probably watching the girls apply everything they worked hard on in practice.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
God and sports

Please share more about this topic and why you feel it's so relevant to teens today.
Im very passionate about sports and God. I think that sports are something that are so common in teens’ lives today and it is a chance for teens to have fun doing something they love. Sports are also a good opportunity to be exposed to people you normally wouldn’t be around and to make new friends and connections. Sports can expose you to people and can be a good bridge to a friendship. As a Christian I also try to use sports to be a light to others and draw people to Christ.

Maya Gonzales – Michigan
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Sweet Life Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Maya Gonzales had a vision for her life from an early age. She always knew her path in life would be an artist and musician. Maya has dedicating her life to her violin, piano, guitar, and artwork. She has been fortunate to travel the world playing her music and extremely fortunate to attend Interlochen Arts Academy. Her good fortune comes by having a passion, drive, and dedication to be the best artist she can possibly be. Her artistry is bigger than herself. She continually looks at how her artistry can affect change in her community and the lives of others.

Please share your music career with us. When did you start, which instrument is your favorite, and where and what you are practicing now?
I officially started my music career when I was about 6 years old, taking piano lessons. But even before then, I remember singing folk songs with my grandpa while he played guitar. While I have always been a classically trained musician, I owe my grandpa a great due of thanks for being one of the people that kept me motivated. After about 5 years of taking piano lessons, I started taking violin lessons as well. I played in my high school orchestra, my local symphony orchestra, and played in a string quartet at weddings. I also attended multiple camps from the ages of 12 to 16. My junior year I auditioned for Interlochen Art Academy, was accepted, and played violin in the academy symphony. In the midst of playing violin and piano, I learned ukelele, bass guitar and acoustic/electric guitar. Im now still studying at Interlochen Arts Academy, focusing on fashion, but trying to improve my guitar playing.

What is one of your favorite memories music has brought you?
Either travelling to Europe to tour with a youth symphony, or travelling to Miami with the Interlochen orchestra. In Europe I performed at beautiful churches and venues across France, Germany, and Luxembourg. In Miami we performed at The New Word Center for a sold out crowd of 700 people.

What type of artwork do you do?
I do all types of artwork, but some of my favorite mediums are charcoal, pencil, and oil/acrylic paint. I like to make conceptual artwork that is meaningful to me and to the people who see it. Conceptual art is nice because it depends on the viewer to determine the meaning behind it, and it can be different for everyone.

What types of fashion do you design and where do you get your inspiration?
Right now, I design mainly dresses and some shirts, but I am hoping to work my way up to other garments like jackets and suits. I get my inspiration from all over. It can be something as simple as seeing an outfit I like on Instagram and using that for inspiration. But it can also be a very deep and involving process where I find a theme to work with and base a garment off that. I also love looking in fashion magazines and seeing all of the new trends, I think my favorite magazine is ‘W’.

If you have a favorite, we'd love to see a picture of something you've designed and the details to go along with it.

Bailey Jennings – Georgia
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Monica Jennings
Photography by Carolyn Griffin
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Bailey is an overcomer! She has had many academic challenges due to some learning disabilities that were diagnosed in 9th grade, when all the credit-bearing classes begin to accumulate for graduation GPA. We moved her to a smaller private school during the summer after her 10th grade year. That in itself is hard for a teenager, new friends, new school, and a new city.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would want to be interviewed on my passion for Flyboarding and how as a girl it’s a very uncommon sport, especially in South Georgia. I got started last summer and I enjoy doing it with my dad at our houseboat at Lake Blackshear.
Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover my love for art. I recently took on a huge project which was painting my schools bathroom to help bring a smile to girls who might be feeling overwhelmed or lonely due to Covid-19 outbreak. I put fun paintings and brightened it up so everyone could at least have something to make their day better. Animals really inspire me, when I paint especially a lion or tiger would have to be my favorite thing to paint.

Picture

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (
What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
Social Media. Myself included I spend way to much time on my phone to the point where I don’t even acknowledge my friends who are in the same room with me. We all just sit on our phones and because of COVid-19 it has only gotten worse, because you can’t go out and do fun things anymore. Phones are ruining everyone’s perception of each other and we have this picture of what someone should look or act like because of society today. I think one solution to getting teenagers off phones is community service or small groups to help our world, because we will all look up from our phones one day and see just how much the world needs our generation to stand up and make a difference.

What is one of your favorite memories from soccer?
I have several good memories, and I am always in good spirits after winning a game, but if I were to pick one memory it would be winning the 6A state championship in 2019. My high school soccer team was going through playoffs in the spring of my sophomore year. We had reached the state championship. The stakes were high, so we were all really nervous for the game. I will never forget my excitement after winning. My entire team celebrated and we were smiling the entire way home.

What does leadership mean to you, and what do you think makes a good leader?

To me, leadership means using your abilities and status to help others around you become the type of person they want to be. Too many "leaders" use their role in a negative way when leadership should involve helping others grow mentally by working together to achieve common goals. A good leader has flexibility with their outputs and is willing to work well with others. Leaders must also be selfless and put themselves in a position to mentor and help those around them. In my opinion, a leader is often defined by those around them.

What are your roles in Assisteens of Norman and what do you love most about it? What should people know if they want to get involved?
Assisteens is the teenage auxiliary of the Assistance League non-profit organization. I have been a part of the Norman Assisteens since August 2015, and I have been on the board since August 2018. I have served as the fall and spring fundraiser chairs, and I am currently the Operation School Bell chair. The thing I love most about Assisteens is the environment created at every Assisteens event. Everyone is involved and really cares about what is going on and helping ease burdens in our community. To get involved you can search up your local Assisteens chapter online. Hopefully there is a local Assisteens chapter near you and you can sign up for the next school year!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't assume anything is guaranteed. I have worked really hard to get in the position I am today, and one of my biggest regrets is assuming that I was guaranteed something. Nothing in life is absolutely guaranteed and we must not forget that. We need to remember to constantly work hard and give our best efforts if we want to be successful. We can think we are guaranteed to win a certain award or get a certain job and this mentality can cause us to produce less effort. A sense of entitlement is dangerous, so always give your best.

Cherry-Anna Meadors - Ohio
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by
Candace Meadors
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Cherry-Anna Meadors is so inspiring because she has the biggest heart. She is a friend to all and knows no stranger. She helps kids feel comfortable and leaves no one out. She gave up her birthday and Christmas money last year for other kids to join her at camp. She puts her heart into anything that comes her way and gives 100% to it. She is a second-year dancer blew the judges out of the water with her first year. She was crowned dancer of the year at her first competition and took first overall. And again, at nationals.
She makes sure kids don't go hungry at school. Trust me she would come home and tell me they would change to her account she knew I would pay.
She helps old people she will open doors and help take groceries out.
She learned this in girl scouts that stayed with her. There are no homeless pets when she is around; she finds all pets a good home. No pet left behind.
She sees the good in everyone even if they have been nothing but bad to her.
She will be the girl who grows up knowing that fairy tales and people can be real because in her world she creates them. She doesn't give up hope.
A lot of kids always says how nice she is and how big her heart is. A lot of parents say how sweet and and helpful she is and notice her and her actions are genuine.
It’s hard for me to write this she is my kid of course I’m will think she is great. But everything is true. She gave up Christmas and her birthday for kids to join her from public school to camp.
God and the universe seen this and gave back times 10.
She has a heart as big as the ocean.
And we are creating her fairy tale.
This is part of it.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about my job, because it plays a big step in who I am and what I love to do.

I work at Boyd Christian Church in their after school program. Kids grades k-8 who attend Rome Grade School can come after school if their parents or guardians won’t be home to get them off the bus. We help them with all their homework, play fun games with them, watch movies, and more. I love it so much because I love kids, they’re so fun to be around. It’s also nice to get to know so many young spirits and talk with them. I love being able to know so many amazing kids and making memories that they’ll remember and cherish!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I really enjoy helping people, whether that be letting them talk to me about their problems or helping them physically with something. I also love taking care of animals. I think that every animal deserves love and care and should always be treated humanely.

That is so sweet you love to help people. What do you think is the biggest problem among teens today, and what is a solution for this?
I think a big problem today is everyone is always so quick to put someone else down. Some do it for popularity, some do it just to get a laugh out of their friends. I think though, we could stop this by trying to include everyone. Instead of brushing it off our shoulders, people should stand up for others. It’s the right thing to do instead of sitting back and watching.

How do you find opportunities to take care of animals? What is a favorite memory from your love of caring for them?
Throughout my childhood, we have rescued and helped many animals, squirrels, dogs, kittens, cats. Honestly, most of the animals my family owns are rescues. We’ve kept many stray cats, and a few stray dogs. My favorite memory is when I was very young my mom brought home a stray cat. I fell in love with her and have her to this day. Her name is magic and is the sweetest cat you would ever meet.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
A topic I would like to present would be something to do with the judging that goes on between girls. Growing up, I have never been a very popular person, and I was always judged based on my looks, the things I wore, and how I can be socially awkward at times. I have always wanted to express my feelings toward that topic. Because sometimes people don’t realize how hard they judge a person and what it does to them.

What do you wish every teen girl knew before judging someone else?
I wish they knew what was going on in that persons life before they judged someone. Not everyone has it perfect in life, we all have our own problems. I believe it’s not fair to that person struggling, or maybe their parents are struggling to bring in enough money. Maybe their home situation is hard, you never know what’s going on in someone’s life. I think everyone should think of that before they go and judge someone.
