What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to share my love for dance and cheer. I grew up taking various styles of dance classes and competing in dance competitions on the east coast. When I entered high school I joined the cheer team and I believe dance really helped prepare me.

Tell us about your dance career - how did you get started and where are you at with it now? What types of dance do you study and which is your favorite?
I started dancing when I turned 4. I took a ballet/tap combo class and loved it. Contemporary dance was my favorite style of dance, but I participated in jazz, musical theater, tap, and pointe.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
I have two favorites from my years of dance. The first was being awarded a scholarship to the NUVO dance convention and the second was receiving a platinum score and best facials award for my solo competition dance.

How was it transitioning to cheer in high school? What is your team like and what do you bring to the team?
At first starting cheer was tough due to COVID. We were unable to practice or perform certain stunts, but we made the best of it. I love the friendships I have made with my teammates. We have so much fun and work well together to achieve goals. I would say I bring plenty of encouragement and positivity to the team.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
My favorite cheer memory so far has been participating in the regional competition. It was an amazing experience and huge accomplishment participating as a freshman.

Tell us about your photo shoot/s with Julia Aguilar / captured_timephotography. How do you work together to come up with great ideas for your shoots? What special memories do you have with your mom combining both of your creativity this way?
I love getting the opportunity to spend extra time with my Mom doing something we both love. She is so creative and has the best ideas for different shoots. We always laugh and joke the whole time which really helps me be comfortable in front of the camera.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I have been a Cheerleader since I was about 4 years old, I absolutely loved being involved in a team activity like Cheerleading because I enjoy encouraging others whenever I can. Cheerleading truly establishes a sisterhood of girls with similar interests which makes it so worth it for me.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from cheer?
My favorite memory thus far was by far our recent trip this summer to UCA Cheer Camp. My team and I spent four days together, and we ended up taking home 1st Place at camp. I had the most amazing time getting to know girls from all over the state who all share a similar love for Cheerleading.

What else should we definitely know about you?
Throughout my life, growing up I felt the impact of health-related issues from my family including my brother and my dad. From this point forward, I have always wanted to pursue a career in medicine and be able to help people as a surgeon. Helping people through any difficult time they are facing has always been something to which I aspire.

Tell us about your jobs at the local medical office.
I always dreamed of pursuing a career in medicine and when I found out that I could get a head start on learning more about the field I was ecstatic. I help around the office, shadowing in both surgical and non-surgical procedures as well as help manage the Social Media platforms.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I truly believe that I have an instinct to help those who are down, and this characteristic manifested itself when my brother suffered severe head trauma and essentially had to relearn his whole life. After this, I always began to help those around me who may feel alone amongst their peers.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
There is an immense need for people to show more kindness and compassion for their peers. In this day and age, where bullying can impact you from many different sources including social media it is important to teach our youth kindness and empathy for others.

What was your senior portrait experience like with Heidi Kalpak and the Pink Peach?
My experience with Heidi was the most amazing experience I have ever been involved in, she made me feel so special throughout the entirety of the shoot and truly captured everything and more that I could’ve ever wanted.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was definitely preparing, and taking my Advanced Placement exams. It took a lot of studying but I’m happy I was able to finish the year to the best of my abilities.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell people to make the best out of the life you’re given, instead of dwelling on small incidents make the best out of the grand scheme of life. I would always say to live everyday like your last and to take part in every experience possible.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Hopefully in 5 years I will be beginning Medical School, and on-track to become a doctor like I have always dreamed.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I live in the Sunshine State, so my favorite pastime would definitely have to be going to the beach with friends, and swimming!

3 Things on your bucket list
One day I would love to travel the world, go skydiving, and make it to all 50 states!

I find my mom to be the person that inspires me the most. She always carries herself with such a positive attitude no matter what she is going through, and I hope that one day I can be like her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe that I am inspiring in the way that I carry myself on a daily basis, I will always have a smile on my face and have a positive attitude even if I’m put in an uncomfortable situation.

Erika Paluck

Picture

Erika Paluck - Washington
Nomination and Photography by Radiant Photography by Selina
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Erika Paluck is an inspiration to all who know her. As a class of 2021 graduate, she completed her first year of college, all while babysitting, selflessly watching her younger siblings through the pandemic, as cheer captain for the last two years, AND maintaining a 3.741 GPA. She enjoys being near the water and time spent with loved ones. Erika also volunteers her time coaching younger boys’ and girls’ cheer camps and at a hometown festival. Erika dreams of becoming a NICU or pediatric nurse and raising a family. Erika finds encouragement from Finding Dory to “just keep swimming.”
Picture
Photography by Radiant Photography by Selina

What should we definitely know about you?
My determination and success throughout high school. I kept my grades up in high school and my first year of college all while babysitting my younger siblings and a few extra kids. At first, life was crazy trying to balance everything out, but in the end, I loved every second I got to spend with those kids. I finished high school with a 3.74 and my first year of college with a 3.98 GPA. The pandemic had a huge impact on my senior year, but without it I wouldn't have completed my first year of college. I would consider myself a very outgoing and kind person, I try my best to make everyone feel very welcomed.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

As briefly talked about, I was a cheer captain for two years. Which included making important decisions for the team, trying to keep a positive attitude on the team, and much more. Cheerleading was so much more than a sport to me, it was my life for three years. I started cheering my sophomore year of high school and stayed with it until I graduated. Cheer was the only place I felt like I belonged; I could be myself and not get judged, it was my home away from home. Even though there were some bad days at cheer, I loved that my squad had such a strong bond and nothing could break us. A lot of the girls on the squad looked up to me, some even said I was the glue to the squad. Not only while being on the court or field I loved being a leader, I try to keep a good balance between people so their opinions are heard.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Substance abuse is a topic that is very important, but not a lot of people talk about it. It is amazing how much help is out there for the abuser, but sometimes they are given too many chances. All the chances can end up hurting children involved in the situation. I know from first-hand experience that children that are involved in substance abuse problems, are affected the most because they have no control over the problem. The programs that are out there for abusers are amazing; however, the number of chances abusers are given is sometimes too much.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed over my outlook on life.

I have realized that life is too short, and we have to make the best of it. Living a little, taking chances, and not worrying about minor things is key to a better life.

Share with us your cheer career. What made you decide to get involved, how old were you, and where are you with it now?
As a child, I always looked up to cheerleaders. At the age of 14, I decided to try out for the Junior Varsity squad, even though I had no experience. It didn't take long to comprehend how much hard work I would have to put in. My first year as a cheerleader, I worked relentlessly and earned my spot on the competition team. The second year, I was blessed to be named Captain of the Junior Varsity team. The third year, I became a Varsity squad member and never felt more at home.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from cheer?
Our competition team made school history by placing in the top 20 in the state of Texas. That will always be one of the best memories of high school. I am proud to be chosen as a Co-Captain for senior year. I believe my leadership will benefit the team.

What did you love best about NHS?
I was inducted into the NHS 2 months ago. Inductees have to accomplish a certain GPA, maintain proper attendance, and retain a clean disciplinary record. It is required to have community service hours. So far, I have served at a mother/son dance and painted one of my teacher's rooms. I look forward to continuing to give to the community.

What made you choose nursing as a career and what was it like to earn your CNA certification while still in high school?
I chose nursing as a career because I want to change the world one patient at a time. My greatest accomplishment is earning my CNA certification. That class has been top priority throughout the year. I have adapted to balancing CNA studies, cheer, difficult classes, and a job. Self-discipline and hard work really does pay off.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I've always wanted to prove that beauty is so much deeper than physical appearances. Being a genuine, humble person can get you further in life.

She has been a competition and sideline cheerleader since the 6th grade. She will be attending Jacksonville State University in Alabama and hopes to cheer there. Tell us about your cheer career - start to finish.
I started recreation cheer when I was a little girl. I loved it despite being incredibly shy. I also did competitive gymnastics for about 13 years. In high school I have done competition and football for all 4 years and it’s been the best experience of my life. Cheer teaches you how to work with others and what teamwork is all about. Competition has a rush of adrenaline and has made me learn what hard work and dedication is. In football you get to be into the football game and feel all the emotions and frustrations of the football players and you get all the different perspectives of a Friday night football game.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
My favorite memory is my sophomore year when we went to state and we made it to day 2 of state. It was an amazing feeling knowing all this handwork finally paid off and I got to experience it with people I loved the most and we all worked so hard.

Picture

How has cheer helped you overcome anxiety?
When you’re doing competition and football cheerleading, you are the center of attention to a huge crowd. This was a struggle for me in the beginning, but I soon got over it. It helped me overcome anxiety and show me it’s possible to step out of my shell. Conquering this fear has given me so much confidence and I am so thankful that cheerleading has shown me what I can accomplish.

How does your struggle with body image and eating disorders come into play?
Cheer is a hard environment to be in with body image issues because you are constantly seeing different body types and comparing yourself to everyone. It became a huge issue. I was not educated on how dangerous this mindset could be and I felt trapped inside my own thoughts. I think every teenage girl I have met has struggled with this and they are not educated on why its bad for you and they don’t know how to get out of this mindset and get rid of this disorder. It’s not talked about enough and that’s why I would like to bring light to it.

You belong to a lot of leadership clubs and organizations. Which one is most important to you and why? Which one do you spend the most amount of time in, and doing what? And which one do you hope to leave the biggest legacy, and what is the legacy?
I think the one most important to me is Beta club because I had to work hard and keep my grades up to get into the club. Also, we do a lot of volunteering and it helps the community and its one of my favorite clubs to contribute to.

Allison Stroll

Allison Stroll – Ohio
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Amber Sedlacko
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Allison Stroll has been so inspiring over the past years by showing her pure heart in many ways. Allison has been a cheerleader since the 1st grade & has used this to encourage young people to participate in activities and become leaders in all areas of life by coaching youth cheerleaders at the elementary level. She has lived with a heart condition since birth, however, has never let it define her or limit her opportunities! Allison has used her condition to seek out alternative ways to be involved in activities and show others that she will not be held back. Her dream is to help others by becoming a labor and delivery nurse.

Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a varsity cheerleading captain, this position was awarded to me by my coach based on leadership and work ethic. I am also a youth cheerleading coach. This involves teaching younger girls the basics of cheerleading and how to become more confident as they progress.

I have been on student council all four years of high school. Being a member has helped me get involved with activities in and around school. Student counsel has allowed me to help plan dances, work blood drives and assemblies.

What is one of your favorite memories from cheer?
My sophomore year I had the opportunity to cheer on varsity alongside my older sister, Jada. Jada was an inspiring role model to me and the entire team. She was a wonderful cheerleader and leader. Getting to cheer with my sister for a year was something I will cherish and preserve. For as long as I can remember Jada has been my best friend. I am forever grateful we were given the opportunity to share something we both enjoy.

How has covid affected your cheer season?
Covid has affected my cheer season because only a limited number of girls on the team were allowed to practice at one time. This was heartbreaking, being my senior year, it was times such as practice and games that would be the most bonding for our team. Our fundraisers and team bonding activities were cancelled, making it a struggle to connect with the incoming girls and underclassmen. During football season we were not allowed to attend away games meaning cheer season was cut in half. As basketball season started- our team could not properly social distance on the court, causing us to split the team in half and have four on each end of the gym, making us feel more divided. Every week we are unsure of what may happen, making this a challenging season.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?

I would discuss the effects of online bullying. I experienced the effects over summer into the start of the school year. Some effects include being unmotivated, loss of appetite, lack of communication, sleeping more or less. People tend to be more apt to bully online because they aren't saying it directly to you. Bullies aren't scared to say or do certain things online. Once they are in front of you everything changes, they become nervous and terrified. Don't engage in what is happening, their entire goal is to make you upset and hurt your feelings. It is better not to retaliate. Once they know you will not engage, the situation will settle down. I do my best to raise awareness, it really takes a toll on a person mentally and their self-confidence. It is important, at all ages, that bullying is prevented.

What inspired you to want to play soccer and cheer? Is balancing the two sports ever hard for you?

I was inspired to do cheer because I have been in gymnastic since I was 3 and when I got to middle school, I wanted to support my school and be on the Competition team. I had never played Soccer before middle school, but I love to stay active and wanted to give it a try. I love both sports! Balancing both sports is not too hard...I think doing both sports helps me in each sport with my strength and endurance.

What is your favorite memory from cheering with “Cheer Savannah”?
My favorite memory is when I first came to Cheer Savannah, I automatically felt welcome. I started all stars there at level 6. I was nervous to come into a new gym where everyone grew up together, but they all welcomed me like family and I’m so thankful for that. That’s something I’ll never forget.

What is the difference between your school team and cheering with an all star team? Does it ever get confusing for you to remember different routines because you are on different teams?
Both teams are very competitive and are great teams. All stars is a higher level where I can use more of my higher skills and learn new ones. It challenges me and I love to be challenged. I never confuse the two. I guess because I have had plenty practice learning routines my whole life it is something is easy to remember.

What does it mean to you to have your family by your side through everything you do?
I couldn’t do it without them. I am so thankful for everything they do for me to help me be successful.

Picture
Photography by Brandi Barber

What are some goals that you have for you future? Do you hope to continue with cheer and soccer?
At the moment I hope to Cheer in College. Unfortunately, Soccer does have scholarships where Cheer doesn’t have many choices so that makes it harder to choose. Either way, I plan to attend college in a sport because I feel that playing sports actually helps me with school. It helps me stay focused to be active.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
My “full” in tumbling. It was a challenge and there were lots of times where I was discouraged and upset. I had a mental block, But I was determined and once I overcame it then my skills after that seem to come a lot easier.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t give up when you have hard times. To be able to get better and see good results you have to go thru hard times. Times where you want to quit but you don’t. My mom never let me quit or give up and today I am thankful for that. I think it has taught me to not give up on lots of other things in life.

Picture
Photography by Brandi Barber

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I would be in my first year in college. I want to be a pediatrician.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I enjoy hanging out with my friends and going to Friday night football games.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would really like to talk about not giving up when times are hard. I think that even though I’m talking about sports, that it really helps you in other areas of life. It makes you think outside the box. That you can do anything!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
When I was 5 , My mom taught me to sew. Now, I can pretty much sew anything without a pattern.

Picture

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Go to bora bora, 2. our cheer team to make it to worlds this year, 3. go parasailing

Who do you find inspiring?
My tumble Coach, Victoria Brown. Not only does she teach tumbling, but she really shows so much support to everyone around her. She has even prayed with me when I needed it. I’m thankful for her!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Well, I can’t say for sure, but I try to help others and encourage them. Especially when it is something I have been thru and I’m able to know how to help. Either way, I try to do what I can.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I am super excited to be a part of this interview and I hope that I can be a part of helping others with my story.

Haley Page – Kentucky
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Renee page
Photography by Red Elephant Studio
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Haley Page is a bright student and athlete she gives her all at practice and is always making someone smile. She is very outgoing and friendly. When she gets set on something at practice she doesn’t stop until she’s done, she’s very determined.

Picture
Photography by Renee page

What or who inspired you to start cheerleading? Who are some cheerleaders or athletes that you look up to?

In elementary school one of my friends wanted me to do an all-star team with her and I was like okay that sounds like fun and so I went and I loved it and we had one of the scariest coaches, O’Shea Parker however he has pushed me to be the best I can and he’s still currently my coach and helps with my high school team. A few cheerleaders I look up to are Gabi Butler, Morgan Simianer, and Whitney Hollman.

How long have you been cheering for? What is your favorite memory from your time cheering?
I started cheer when I was in 5th grade and haven’t stopped! My favorite memory from cheer is this year in February our team got a bid to go to nationals in Orlando at ESPN Wide World of Sports complex and we worked so hard and received 10th in the nation!

How did the global pandemic impact your cheerleading schedule for the fall? Is there a time that you went without being with your team? How did you push through that?
Currently the global pandemic has impacted many cheerleaders throughout the world. My team was supposed to attend UCA cheer camp at Panama City Beach however that got cancelled. Teams aren’t allowed to stunt because we are so close and, in each other’s face, but it sets us back because stunting is a big proportion of our scoresheets. There was a time period that we weren’t allowed to practice or tumble together and that was very challenging , however my teammates and I have been working on the little things such as sending cheers out for sideline and making sure we stretch outside of cheer for our jumps.
Picture
Photography by Renee page

What helps you balance your academics and cheerleading? What would be your advice to others who are trying to balance many things like you?
My coach is a big help in balancing these two for me personally. She makes sure we are on top of it in class and that we are doing our very best. My advice to other who are trying to balance is to do as much work in the classroom, so you don’t have much once you get home.

What are some goals that you have for your future? What would you like to be when you are older, and would you want to cheer in college?
I have many goals for myself in the future such as becoming a cheer coach as a side job of being an Orthodontist and having a happy family. I would love to cheer in college hopefully at Western Kentucky University but I know I have to work extremely hard but nothing is impossible!

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hard seat thing to accomplish or overcome in cheerleading is an injury. I broke my ankle in 8th grade and was out for a little while and once I got cleared it took time to get back into tumbling and going from no weight at all to bouncing and landing on it. After a lot of workouts and stretching I came back and was ready and became better.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Advice I would give to someone who wants to be in my place today is to never give up, always try your 100%, be the best you can be, and don’t make excuses for yourself. You control everything about you and if you want something there’s nothing stopping you except for yourself.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I see myself halfway through medical/dental school getting ready to become an Orthodontist. Working extremely hard to do the best I can and hopefully move into a house with my spouse.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activity is to play with younger kids, we usually have a mini camp and the kids  and I love each other. I also take a class at my Highschool that let’s me go to the elementary school to help educated a class. The students adore me and always say good afternoon Miss Haley and give me big hugs!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I don’t really have a hidden talent or at least I haven’t discovered it but I’m good at tumbling!

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
It would be about cheerleading, mathematics, sports, and/or dental hygiene because I’m very passionate about these things and I could never get bored of talking about them!

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list is to stay in the medical field or become an Orthodontist and not give up, go noodling, I think it would be fun to catch a big fish, and to grow up and be happy with life and not struggle.

I find many people inspiring however my mom is the women who has always been my number one supporter and will always have my back. She’s always looking for the best interest in me and leading me in the right directions.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe as a senior future possible captain on my cheer team and as co co-captain my previous year many of the new girls look up to me and they strive to be as determined as me. What do you love most about cheer and being an Allstar cheerleader for 15 years?
The thing I love most about cheer is the passion that grows on you throughout the years. Cheer has taught me many life lessons and has shown me how to cope with things in real life. The friendships I have made along the way are the people that I know will stick by me on my best and worst days. I also love seeing younger athletes grow into the athlete I am today.

How has your passion for cheer impacted your life and how you spend your time?
My passion for cheer has impacted my life by never giving up on myself because hard work pays off in the end. In my eyes working to better myself and cheer is my priority. Any spare time I have is most likely on the cheer mat and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Strenuous hours of practice, competition and camps have ruined plans for me, but my goal is to be the best I can be.

Picture
Photography by Mallory Neil Photography
Tell me about the different accomplishments you have made through cheer and what was one of your favorite moments being part of it?
My dream has always been to be on the best team possible. I have accomplished this goal by being on Level 5 team for 2020-2021 season. In the past years I have won many National Champion titles, At Large Bids and PAID bids to the D2 Summit, Grand Champions, Specialty Awards, Leaderboard Rankings and was personally awarded Athlete of the Month and Best Role Model.

How are you also involved in your academics at school and how have you been able to manage your schoolwork while being so involved with cheer?
I am very involved in academics at school because I am a go – getter. I like to not only achieve my goals, but I do the best I can with them. Managing schoolwork and cheer have been challenging through the years, but schoolwork always comes first. Long nights after cheer practice consists of doing homework on my hour drive to the gym, staying up past midnight to finish projects, studying with friends in the car and taking extra work with me to competitions to finish for the days I miss.

Picture
Photography by Mallory Neil Photography
In what ways can your lifestyle towards dedicating your time to cheer and school inspire other teens to do the same with their passions?
I am dedicated, responsible and motivated to reach goals in life. I have put a lot of hard work into cheer and school to fulfill my dreams. I think it is important to have structure in your life also to achieve great things. I am coaching 3 teams at my gym (XTREME ALLSTARS) this year so I can enjoy the journey with the younger athletes to fulfill their dreams like I was given the chance to fulfill mine. DON’T EVER GIVE UP

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever accomplished was telling myself to never give up after hard times. My Nannie passed away in 2018 we were inseparable. After I lost her, I never thought I could teach myself to keep moving in cheer and school. So, to this day I go through rough times where I doubt myself, but I always remember she would tell me to keep going. I look back on pictures of her and know how proud of me she was because of all my accomplishments.
Picture
Photography by Mallory Neil Photography
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Believe in yourself and don’t worry about what others say. My favorite quote has helped me reach all my goals “there will always be obstacles, there will always be doubters, there will always be mistakes, but with hard work there are no limits”. More advice I would give to someone to be where I am today would be that if you feel you have reached your limit keep trying you can always do better.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your future plans? In 5 years, I see myself in college studying to become a Physicians Assistant. This has been a dream of mine for many years. I would also like to specialize in Pulmonology. My plans consist of becoming a PA, getting married, having children (that will cheer obviously) and living a happy life.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activities are tumbling with friends, traveling, and riding jet skis at Raystown Lake. During the school year I enjoy volunteering at Mt Lion Backpack Program at my school. It is a program where we pack backpacks full of food for kids from my school that are less fortunate, and I enjoy spending time with classmates helping other kids in our school.
Picture
Photography by Mallory Neil Photography
If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I could present any topic to my peers, it would be about how cheer has not only taught me skills, but it has also taught me life lessons I will cherish forever.

My Bucket List: I have many things on my bucket list, but these are most important. I want to make a change in peoples lives when I become a PA, I want to win D2 Summit and I want to go sky diving.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my Mom inspiring in many ways. My parents got divorced when I was 4 and I couldn’t imagine being a single Mom. My Mom inspires me every day because she never misses a moment in my life. She is always there to help and support people when they need it the most. She doesn’t give up on herself or others. When I am older, I will strive to be like my Mom because she is dedicated and focused on what she wants most in her life. She is my #1 supporter and has NEVER missed a single cheer competition or school activity.

Picture
Photography by Brandi Galentine
What about you inspires others/ why do you think your inspiring?
I have always been told that I m an inspiration to many younger athletes around me. To me this means so much because I want to be a part of their growth in the cheerleading world. I feel as though I am inspiring because I rise above my limits. I always act as a role model for others and show people how much their value is worth. I also think I am inspiring because I strive for perfection in everything that I do. If I struggle with something in life, I will work 100% harder to reach that goal.

Anything else you would like to tell us?
I am so excited to be a part of Inspiring Teen Magazine and I can’t wait to show the world how you can change someone’s perspective on anything. I am so excited to explain to others about my life and how I became who I am today. Always believe in yourself and you will be unstoppable!

What do you love most about cheerleading and cheering all four years of high school?
My favorite thing about being in competitive cheer was competing and traveling to different places for competitions. I always got really excited during warmups and loved the feeling after hitting a perfect 0 deduction routine. Since I have been on my high school cheer team for 4 years, the girls have become my best friends and I love being able to work with them at practices and different events.

What has been one of your most memorable experiences through cheerleading and tumbling?
One of my most memorable moments during tumbling was when I first landed a full and a double. Those two skills were very big accomplishments for me, I worked really hard and put in a lot of time learning them, so when I first landed both of them it was a great feeling!

Picture
Photography by Ashley Kay Photography

How have you dedicated your time to cheerleading for the future, including being a part of tumbling classes to prepare for college tryouts?

During the week I take 2 one hour tumbling classes at a gym called Tumble Progression to keep up with my skills and learn new things to prepare for college cheerleading tryouts. I also make sure to do different workouts like running to continue to stay in shape and keep up my endurance.

Tell me about your other passion for wake boarding and how it has led you to work at your local cable park.
I used to do week long wake boarding camps when I was little and immediately loved it. A couple years later I applied for the job at Hydrous which led me to wakeboard a lot more and learn a bunch of new tricks. This year I competed in a competition called Points Chase and ended up getting 2nd place in one of the women's divisions.

Picture

What other extracurricular activities are you involved in?
My cousins love to play guitar and ukulele so they were able to teach me some of what they know. This made me decide to take guitar lessons during the summer which I learned a lot from and was able to be self-taught on the ukulele.
My mom is pretty fluent in German, so I decided to take that language in high school. I loved my teacher and how cool the language was, so I wanted to stay in the class for all four years of high school.

How can you inspire other teens to pursue their passions, and stay active in what they love to do like you have in your life?
I want to be able to motivate other people to stay involved in as many things as they can and remind them that the feeling you get when you accomplish something that you've worked really hard on is very rewarding.

Kiera Hoover

Picture

Kiera Hoover - Ohio
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Katherine Boushie
Photography by Studio 187
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kiera Hoover exemplifies the meaning of the word ‘inspiring’ for so many reasons. Kiera has faced numerous difficult challenges growing up, the latest being her diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which affects her connective tissue in joints, causing her nearly daily pain. Despite her challenges, Kiera has been active in school activities as well as in service to others. She was captain of Varsity cheer and a member of Link Crew both leadership roles. As Pure International Miss Teen Midwest Ohio, she has set an example by actively doing for others. She has been a coach for Special Olympics and participated in Relay for Life and Down Syndrome Buddy Walk, providing food for those in need and more! She aspires to be an ASL interpreter. Everything she does is with joy on her face and love in her heart!

What is Ehlers Danlos-Syndrome, and how have you overcome all the challenges it comes with growing up?
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a disease that weakens the connective tissue primarily in your joints, skin and blood vessel walls. I have struggled with pain and loose joints for the last few years. I went to years of doctor appointments and physical therapy, but things were just getting worse. During my senior year of cheerleading I went to do a back handspring and dislocated my elbow. After more testing I was diagnosed with EDS. I was able to finish my senior year cheering, but with a lot of restrictions. Every day I have some degree of pain, aches or some joint sliding out of place, but I try to put a smile on my face and enjoy each day and adventure as best as I can.

How are you active in your school and your community?
I started being active in cheer, theater, volunteering and being a part of Link Crew because being a part of something allows you to feel accepted. When I was younger, I always felt I was alone or didn’t really fit in. It was a feeling that I didn’t want others to experience. Cheerleading and theater gave me the confidence I needed and how to be part of a team. Link Crew is a mentor program that helps our incoming Freshman. I remember when I first started at Lincoln, I was so overwhelmed and nervous in such a big school. I wanted to make sure that others felt like they had someone to come to and help them. Volunteering is not just rewarding for others, but also for myself.

What do you love most about being captain for your Varsity Cheer team and what responsibilities does it come with?
I loved being captain for the GLHS Varsity Cheer team because I was able to help lead and groom others like previous captains did to me. I have always wanted to be a captain since my freshman year of high school. As a captain it is our responsibility to help our coach with cheers, chants, schools banners and signs, support our local community, other sports, schools and anything that needs someone to cheer them on.
Picture
Photography by Studio 187
Tell me about the times you’ve had with being a coach for Special Olympics and participating in Relay for Life and the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk.
I started helping with the Special Olympics, Relay for Life and the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk because my stepmom, Julie, is a cancer survivor and a special needs educational aide. She always brought me in the classroom and showed me the importance of inclusion. It’s learning that people don’t have disabilities but a different ability. They have coached me just as much as I have coached them.

How have your parents become a big inspiration in your life, and in what ways have they impacted who you are?
My parents have provided me with a humble foundation with which to build a faith based future upon. This foundation consists of clear expectations and opportunities to learn from small mistakes. By leveraging faith based values they have encouraged community involvement and are by my side, leading through example.

What advice would you give to other teens who have gone through something similar that you have, or advice on how to stay active in their communities?
I would recommend that people volunteer often, to humble themselves and to become more selfless. You can do something as simple as donating an hour a month going to the library to read to those who can't, help people grocery shop, or take out people's trash, all of which are non-financial things that most people can spare time for.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished was tumbling. At the time I wasn’t diagnosed with EDS and I was in constant joint pain and my joints would give out. I knew I had to successfully tumble to become a part of the varsity cheer squad. I spent countless hours at physical therapy, private lessons and extra practices until I was successfully able to tumble. My very first time I did was at my cheer tryouts at the end of my sophomore year and since I didn't give up, I made the varsity squad my junior year.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Even when things seem like they are impossible or you are alone, keep your head up and keep pressing on. There is always some opportunity in the middle of difficulty and you are much stronger than you think you are.
Picture
Photography by Studio 187
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I will be attending Columbus State and Otterbein University in the fall to pursue American Sign Language Interpreting. I hope to see myself working for an airline as a bilingual flight attendant so I can travel the world and share my passion for ASL.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite pastime was when I received my title as 2020 PURE International Pageants Miss Teen Midwest Ohio. I will be going to Nationals this September in Columbus, Ohio.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is singing. I just started sharing this with my family and friends over the last couple of months. I love singing and I am glad I am finally getting the confidence to share it with others.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would share the topic of inclusion. Inclusion in society today is such an uncomfortable topic, but it is so important to me and other teens. Everyone longs to be included.

3 Things on your bucket list
Skydiving
Travel to Italy
Foster Animals

Who do you find inspiring?
My parents.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring because I keep pressing on to help others feel special or included even when I have been left out or feeling like I wasn’t important. I want to keep being a better version of myself and hope that I can help others do the same.

Riley Sakamoto – California
Interview by Claire Path
Nomination by Janet Sakamoto
Photography by Brooke Shalae Photography
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: 17 year old Riley is an inspiring teen for many reasons: she has been influential to her school by being a part of the cheer team, choir, and leadership team. Riley has the goal of becoming a nurse because she broke her arm and tore her radial nerve, so she wants to help other people like her.

Photography by Brooke Shalae Photography

What do you love most about being a part of the cheer team, and coaching younger girls at your school?

I really love the influence that I get to show the other girls. Cheer is a team sport, everyone needs to work together, trust each other, and be in sync. It is such a great way to teach girls these skills and to also learn them myself.

Tell me a little bit about the different extracurricular activities you are involved in including your role on the leadership team, and what you enjoy most about being a part of different extracurricular activities.
I have been a part of the leadership team at my school for two years. It is called SALT and it stands for Service and Leadership Team. I am a part of the cabinet this year. The team plans events for the school, supports school activities, and really we love on our school. As cabinet, I lead the other members who do most of the planning while I work with administration. I also was a part of choir, women's ensemble, and honor choir.

Picture
Photography by Brooke Shalae Photography

What inspired your passion and goal for wanting to become a nurse?

When I was seven years old, I broke my elbow on the trampoline. I had to have surgery but once my cast was taken off, I could not move my wrist. I then had to have another surgery because the doctor found out that I tore my radial nerve. After this I went to physical therapy for six months. Because of this, I have a heart that wants to help others just like me.

Can you tell me more about the volunteer work you do for your school?
My older sister is a first-grade teacher and I volunteer in her classroom. I love to help her with all things that she needs like grading papers, cleaning her classroom, setting it up, even sharpening pencils.
I also have volunteered in Mexico to build houses at a place called Mexico Caravan Ministries.
Picture
Photography by Brooke Shalae Photography

As an inspiration, how has your influence and involvement in your community inspired others to become active in their communities just like you?
Since I am a cheer coach, I have mentored many girls who want to become someone just like me who can inspire others. Through my leadership team, members of the team are inspired to be a part of the community and do community events. In honor choir, I would sing at different places in the community to bless those who live here. With my life, many young girls have looked up to me and told me that they want to be just like me when they grow up.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing that I have ever accomplished is regaining movement in my hand. I went through a lot of doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I really leaned on my family to get through this time. After the doctors figured out what was wrong with me, it was a great time. Even after surgery, I went through physical therapy for six months. These were hard times; we all did not know what I was going to be able to do. But, with my family as my support system, I was able to gain almost full motion back.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give to someone is to be perseverant. If you set your goals, take small steps to accomplish them and soon your big goal will be accomplished.
Picture
Photography by Brooke Shalae Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
A lot can change in five years. The first place that I see myself is being a nurse. I would have my Bachelor of Science Nursing and be working in a hospital. Some other goals that I have would be to start a family after this. I want to be a hard-working girl who has love for what she is doing.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite pastime is anything that I do to spend time with my family. I love my family and they are such a big part of my life, I love to spend time with them.

Riley will be featured in Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!

Hannah Hopper - Arkansas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Jeff Hopper
Photography by Amber Oxley Photography
Issue 31 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Hannah Hopper is an awesome young lady! She is full of joy and it shows through her beautiful and contagious smile. She is very active in the local church’s youth group. Hannah started a community-wide recycling program through Armorel High School’s EAST program that got recycling bins for every classroom and a trailer placed on campus for recycling drop off for the community. She is captain of the cheer squad, vice president of her class, FBLA chapter parliamentarian, and journalism treasurer. She is also involved in track, Beta, yearbook, Drug Free club, and Trio.

What inspired you to start your recycling program?
I am a part of the EAST program at my school. In EAST, students create projects that help better the problems in their communities. I decided to start a recycling program after finding out that Northeast Arkansas only recycles about 48% of its waste, which is a lot lower than other areas. At the time, my school was not recycling at all, and there were very few neighborhoods in the area with curbside pickup available. I realized that starting a recycling program could make a huge impact by reducing a significant amount of waste.

Tell me more about being a cheer captain and your achievements being on the cheer squad.
Being a cheer captain has been an amazing experience for me. It has taught me so much about how to be a successful leader and has given me so many necessary life skills. As a cheer captain, my job was to make team decisions such as schedule practices, help choreograph dances, and come up with new cheers to do on the sideline. It was also important for me to make sure everyone on the team was getting along and had a good relationship so we could work better together as a team.

Since I was captain of my school's cheer team, I got the privilege of attending the Varsity Spirit Spectacular in Disney World last November. At this event, I got to perform in a Christmas parade in front of hundreds of people. I see this as one of my biggest achievements from being on the cheer squad because it was such a rare and exciting experience.

I know that you are involved in your church's youth group What is that like and what does it entail?
Being involved in my church's youth group has been one of my favorite things I am a part of. My church has a very close group, and being a part of it helps make each week easier to go through because everyone involved is constantly messaging each other with encouraging words and thoughts. Since our group is so small, it is easier for us to be each other's accountability partners by encouraging one another to stay involved in church and to continue studying our Bibles. Our youth group also does a lot of things outside of the church, which is so fun since most of us have grown up together since we were babies. We have done things like making food together, going on big trips out of town, playing laser tag, going to concerts, and even successfully getting out of an escape room.

Explain to me more about FBLA and what you do with that club/organization
FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America and it is a very popular club at my school. FBLA consists of conferences throughout the year where students get to hear from large business owners and influential people about how to be better leaders and how to be successful after high school by becoming involved in business. At these conferences, students also have the opportunity to compete in competitions related to business. Two of my friends and I competed in Digital Video Production the past two years and got second in district the first year, and even got to compete on the national level the second year. This year, we are competing in the Public Service Announcement competition and have been allowed to compete at the state level so far. I am my FBLA chapter's parliamentarian. I am in charge of making sure our meetings are kept orderly and everything that needs to be discussed is mentioned.

Because you are involved in so many activities how do you stay on task and get everything done every day?
It can be very challenging at times to keep everything I am involved in balanced with completing my school work, maintaining good grades, and having a social life all at the same time. I recently bought a bullet journal and it has helped me with time management tremendously. I write all of the big events that have been planned a while in advance in my bullet journal each month. I also have a whiteboard calendar hanging in my room, which is where I keep track of what I am doing weekly such as appointments, sports practices, meetings, and school deadlines. Making daily todo lists with everything that needs to be completed before the day ends is also a huge help to me.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years I see myself working towards my master's degree in communication disorders to become a speech pathologist. I also see myself married with two dogs.

3 Things on your bucket list
Swim with dolphins
Go on a mission trip to Africa
Ride in a hot air balloon

How has your strong faith impacted who you are, and how do you continue to build your faith through your daily life?

My faith has impacted every aspect of my life. Growing up in church, I have always been taught the importance of standing strong in the Lord and sharing my faith with others. I would have never been able to accomplish anything without my faith and God by my side. I am so grateful for my parents and the leaders in my church that have helped me grow as a Christian and helped me become the person I am today. I continue to build my faith by attending church every Sunday and surrounding myself with people who strengthen my love for the Lord. I strive to show others Jesus in daily life and through the activities I am involved in. I feel as if God has given me my talents so that I may use them to further His kingdom.

How have you continued to apply your faith through all that you are involved in?
I continue to apply my faith through all that I am involved in by sharing my faith with those around me and showing my love for the Lord. I believe that God has called me to spread his word by giving me the talents I possess. I strive to show and share my faith by exhibiting the qualities of a Christian. I try to always remember the Word of God and live according to His teachings. My faith is so important to me and I want to let my light shine for the Lord through all that I am involved in. One of the biggest things to me is leading by example and letting my actions speak just as loud as my words. It is so important that I show my faith through my actions and set an example for others of how to live as God sees fit.

As an inspiration to others, how have you set an example on how to live your life through your faith while also putting in full effort to all that you are involved in?
I have set an example of how to live my life by following the guidelines and rules God has outlined for every one of us. I firmly believe that God has a plan for me and that everything happens for a reason on His timing. I put all of my trust in the Lord and know that he walks by my side every day, through every situation. Whenever I am struggling or feel stressed or anxious, I pray and ask God for guidance and reassurance that He has everything under control. My faith helps me put full effort into all that I am involved in and the Lord gives me the strength to always give my all in every circumstance. Sometimes it can be tiring and tough to be involved in so many things, but I always have God on my side helping me be the best person, teammate, club member, and leader I can be.

What do you love most about cheerleading, and what has been your favorite memory being co-captain of your varsity squad?
My favorite part of cheerleading is showing my school spirit and representing my school and community. Being a cheerleader means always staying positive and cheering on my fellow classmates during athletic events. It is such a good feeling to perform in front of the whole community during a football game or stunt for the starting lineup during basketball season. I love creating memories that will last a lifetime, and many of these come from cheerleading. I will never forget my time cheering on my team on both the field and the court. I am so proud to be seen as a role model for the younger girls on my squad and the little girls that watch the games that I cheer for.

What do you enjoy most about being so actively involved in so many different leadership positions and extracurriculars?
I enjoy being a leader in my school and community because of the unique experiences and memories I get to create. Being a yearbook editor and cheerleading captain has allowed me to do things that many people have not had the chance to do. I am very grateful for these opportunities and experiences I have been granted. I love staying busy with all of my extracurriculars and being a part of my high school.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was being in the cast of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Yuletide Celebration. Yuletide Celebration is a professional, large-scale Christmas production. From first grade to freshman year, my family and I performed roughly eight to nine shows a week during the entire holiday season while also still going to school full time and participating in extracurricular activities. It was a very demanding and exhausting process, but an experience I will remember and cherish for my entire life. I was able to perform with many famous and talented people along with the incomparable Maestro Everly and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would advise someone to always do your best and be the hardest worker in the room. I would also tell them to remember who you are and stay true to your beliefs and values.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I plan to be a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Advertising. I hope to have a job in PR and a lifelong career doing what I love. For the future beyond that, I hope to be married raising my family with strong Christian values in a financially stable household.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

My favorite activity is spending time with my twin sister. We do everything together and I am almost always with her. She is my best friend and I do not know what I would do without her. We both enjoy spending time with our friends and doing the things we love with them.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is my ability to play the cello. I was in orchestra for five years, all through middle school and the beginning of high school.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized by staying on top of things and not procrastinating. I try to always get ahead, so I do not fall behind.

3 Things on your bucket list
One thing on my bucket list is to study abroad in college. I also want to work for Disney World and travel to all of the Disney locations around the world. Lastly, I would like to live on the beach and learn how to surf.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find veterans and soldiers who have fought and are currently fighting for our freedom inspiring. I believe that these men and women are the bravest people in our society and sacrifice so much so that we can live in a safe country with freedoms that many people around the world unfortunately do not have.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope that I am inspiring because of the kindness and compassion I show toward others. I always try to stay positive and upbeat and encouraging to my peers.

Jenna Pallaci - Ohio
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Meagan Lynn Photography
Issue 29 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jenna Pallaci is such a unique individual! She coaches the Special Gymnastics Olympics for one of the most elite Gymnastic Facility in Columbus, Ohio. For the past 3 years she has been a varsity gymnast. Jenna is also a 3 year-scholar-athlete, 8th in the nation at the cheerleading competition at The Summit championships and a varsity competitive cheerleading for school ranked 10th in the state! She is an amazing athlete and with a heart to match!
Picture
Photography by Meagan Lynn Photography

Why did you start doing gymnastics? Did someone inspire you? If so, who?

As a toddler, I treated everything around me as if it were a jungle gym. I was always climbing on everything and hanging off furniture even when I wasn’t supposed to. My mom decided to put me in preschool gymnastics classes when I was 4 years old. I became hooked from the very instant I stepped into the gym and continued to gain skills and confidence throughout my journey with this sport until I was 12 years old. From there I switched to competitive cheerleading because I wanted to continue tumbling. Presently I’m coaching gymnastics and using my skills to instruct other athletes. My mom is my biggest inspiration as she has inspired me to continue with my passion, from age 4 up until the present.

What is your favorite event when it comes to gymnastics?
My favorite gymnastics event is floor exercise. Tumbling across the mat is my passion. The power and skill required to move your body and stick your landing for challenging tumble passes motivates me to work hard on core strength and technique. I also love the dance and leaps that are part of the floor routines. Floor exercise has never been my highest scoring event, but it’s still my favorite.
Picture
Photography by Meagan Lynn Photography

What are some thoughts that go through your head when you are just about to take the floor at a cheerleading competition?

Before taking the floor at a cheerleading competition, I can’t help but imagine how great it would feel to come home with a win. I always remind myself and my teammates that the only way we can achieve this is by working together. Competitive cheerleading is all about teamwork and supporting each other, and that is the first and last thing that I think about during a competition.

When you are not cheering, or coaching gymnastics, what is something you like to do in your free time?
Aside from cheering and coaching gymnastics, I also play lacrosse for my school’s varsity team. I am a midfielder which means I play both offense and defense! I am a dancer as well. My favorite type of dance is hip hop. Lastly, I love to babysit. Building relationships with the children that I watch is very important to me. Luckily it comes pretty easily!
Picture

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?

I have learned over the years that time management skills are very important to obtain. When I first entered high school, I struggled a lot in this area. Now that I am a junior and have been exposed to many situations in which I have felt pressed for time, I have a set routine that helps me to get everything done on time. My work ethic and dedication, combined with my time management skills have come in handy in many situations throughout my high school career.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to run. I have finished several 5k’s throughout my life, and a 4-miler where we finished on the Ohio State University football field. This past November in 2019, I finished a 15k for the first time! (9.33 miles) This was a big accomplishment for me, as I have never run in a race that long before.

Tell us what it is like coaching the Special Olympics Gymnastics team?

The athletes that I coach vary in age from about 5 to 40. They all have different disabilities and require different coaching styles which makes what I do extra special. I love how unique each of our athletes really are. It is so rewarding seeing their progress from week to week. The feeling is incredible because I know that I am helping to provide a life-changing experience for them. Their big hugs and kind words make me realize that this is what I was meant to do.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I see myself graduating from a university in Ohio, possibly Kent State University, with a degree in either psychology or special education. I would like to take the skills I have developed through coaching and use them with my future career.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I am a middle child. I have a 19 year old brother (my best friend), a 12 year old younger sister, and an 8 year old foster brother. We also have a dog named Nico.

If you have an idea for a teen who is inspiring enough to be interviewed, please list them here and tell us why you think they would be perfect for the next issue of our magazine. (They wouldn't be contacted until your issue is closed):
I think Amanda Sugerik would be a good teen to interview! She is very inspiring with her work to save our environment and has even won at least 1 award for it! She is also a dancer!

Tell us about your athletic life with cheerleading.
Being a cheerleader has had an extremely huge impact on my life for more than 6 years now. Cheerleading takes a major role in my life when it comes down to commitment, time, hard-work, and dedication. It is one of my main passions I have in life. There is something about the Friday night lights that give me chills. Cheering on the sidelines while my friends play football gives me so much joy, and I would not change it for the world.

If you had the opportunity to coach a cheerleading team in the future, would you take it?
I would love to coach a cheer team if I had the opportunity. Sharing my passion for cheer and the excitement it brings me would be easy to share with others.

If you had to pick out of the 4 sports you play, cheerleading, basketball, track and softball, which would you be your favorite and why? If you cannot pick one, tell us one special thing you love about each sport!
Even though I go to a small private school in Monroe, La, you would think everyone would play every sport, but in this case, they do not. I am the only female athlete at my school that goes season to season always playing a sport. People ask me all the time what my favorite sport is, but I do not have one. I love the Friday night lights and the atmosphere of the crowd when I am cheering. In basketball I love the sisterhood and the fun we have at not only at practice but at the games also. In track, being a part of a State Champion 4x1 team really shows how teamwork, hard-work, and compassion really comes into play when your team has the same goal, win. Playing softball is generally fun to me. I have experienced playing travel ball and being on my middle school and high school team. The energy softball brings when you are running out onto the field just makes you feel like everyone is there to watch you, and everyone feels that way.

What was it like being elected Homecoming Queen by your peers?
It was truly a humbling honor to be elected as Homecoming Queen by the entire high school student body. Being elected showed many things people see and admire about me that I might not see about myself. Earning the title really showed how much the students wanted me to represent my school, Ouachita Christian. This honor truly changed my life.

What does it mean to be a loyal friend?
Being a loyal friend is always being there for someone when they need you. A loyal friend is one who you can always trust and will never turn their back on you. Having a loyal friend/friends is a really important tool to get you through the ups and downs in life.

Tell us a little bit about the FFA.
I was first exposed to the joy of community service and helping others through my school’s FFA program and class. With over 700 thousand members, the FFA is a national organization which reaches from the state of Alaska, to the Virgin Islands and from the state of Maine to Hawaii. The FFA is a youth organization which helps students discover their true potential though primer leadership and growth.

What is it like being an inspiring ambassador for the FFA?
Over the past 4 years, I have been exposed to many opportunities which lead me to where I am today. I've competed nationally in several different competitions including Food Science, Parliamentary Procedure and soon, Agricultural Sales. One of my favorite parts of being in the FFA is meeting new friends. I love getting to know people and their own inspiring stories as well as setting a good example for younger members to follow.

How did you get involved with cheerleading? What’s your favorite part about the sport and why?
I've always enjoyed attending school sports events and cheering in the student section, but I wanted to get more involved. I was inspired to join the team when a close friend of mine told me it was an escape for her. When she was at cheerleading practice, it was the only thing she had to worry about. I've really enjoyed being part of such a loving team and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

Please tell us why your senior photos are so special to you? How are they different?
I really wanted my photos to be unique and unlike any of the other one's I've seen. My photos tell a story of who I am and the life I’ve lived alongside with my family. My dad has been an airplane pilot for 12 years so naturally I grew up as a pilot's daughter. We spent many of my summers together flying and camping in the backcountry of Idaho. The photos of me in the truck represent my small-town country lifestyle and truly show my personality.
Picture

What kind of music do you like the listen to? What kind of music do you like to play?
I couldn't categorize myself into a genre music. I can go from alternative to rap to country in a matter of a few skips. I grew up in a musical family and was raised on classic bands like Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles. One of my favorite things to do is create playlists for different moods and I often discover new music that way.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Sometimes things won’t go how you plan. But if you’re patient, work hard and stay true to yourself, you will accomplish whatever you put your mind to. Seek what sets your soul on fire.

What opportunities have you gained from cheerleading?

Cheer has shaped me into an outgoing fun filled young lady. My freshman year was our first year competing and we did not win any competition that year, but we took those losses and turned that to drive. I now use that drive that my coach gave me in my everyday life!

Tell me about the Miss Merry Christmas pageant and how it has affected you.
Being awarded the Miss Merry Christmas crown was such a humbling award. It afforded me the opportunity to show the inner beauty as well as outer beauty. Hannah Thompson - Ohio
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Robin's View Studios
Issue 27 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Hannah Thompson is a beautiful girl. She is dancer and has won several national titles. She most recently won a national dance title and title of Miss Rising Star for her dance about bullying and won a regional title for her dance about losing her grandfather to cancer. She is passionate and expressive. This photo was taken at the Mansfield Reformatory as we explored adding light and beauty to a place of darkness. Despite dancing 20+ hours a week, Hannah is also a high school cheerleader and a straight A student. I am a senior and dance photographer and Hannah is definitely my favorite subject.
Picture

How did you get involved with dance?

I have been dancing for as long as I could walk! I was put in dance classes as a child and I have not stopped since. I started at 3 years old. I stayed in dance because of my love for music and staying active. Dance also introduced me to some of my best friends.

Tell us about some of the national titles you have won.

Summer of 2018 I was qualified to compete my solo about bullying at two different nationals. My first competition was in Sandusky, Ohio where I was able to bring home a first place. That was one of the most exciting feelings ever and I felt ready to compete my solo again in Gatlinburg Tennessee. I was able to bring home another first place there too.
After winning in Gatlinburg, I got the opportunity to compete against some of the highest scoring dances of the week for the title of "Rising Star". I did not have a lot of hope going into that because I was the youngest dancer in my category. After performing, the judges brought the final three dancers on the stage. I was one of the three. Going up against two very talented 18 year old soloist, I won the Rising Star title. I was shocked. Winning something that big, I kept my excitement in until I got into the car where I talked about it the whole ride home. This meant everything to me because of how much that dance could relate to me and others. I will never forget that moment.

Tell us about the reason you dance and what it means to you.

I dance because it makes me happy. When I have a bad day at school, my whole mood changes right when I get to dance. Dance for me is like an escape from reality. I do not have to think about things going on outside of dance and I am surrounded by people who are very supportive. With dance I am able to tell people stories without using words. For example, something that is difficult for me to talk about is my grandpa's tough battle with cancer. I dedicated my solo to him, and I was able to share my story through emotion and movement. When I am sad, I dance, when I am happy, I dance.

Picture

What is it like being captain of your cheer squad? How long have you been a cheerleader?

Being captain of my cheer squad comes with a lot of responsibility. I try my best to make sure everyone is happy. I think I am a great leader and I love encouraging my teammates. I try to keep everyone positive throughout the game. I have been cheering for three years now. I started in 7th grade!
Picture
Photography by Robin's View Studios

If you were not a dancer, what do you think you would be doing and why?

This is a hard question because it is weird for me to imagine myself not dancing! But if I did not dance, I think I would be a full-time cheerleader. Right now, I only do football cheer which is still difficult to work around dance. I would do football, basketball and competition cheer. That way there is still some dance incorporated in it and I love tumbling.

Madison Boris - Oklahoma
Interview by Clara Soler
Nomination and Photography by Kim Boris
Issue 27 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Madison is a sophomore at OU. She’s cheers on the OU coed squad. She’ll be applying to dental hygiene school in November. Madison has torn both ACL’s, a meniscus, and an MCL sprain within 14 months of each other when she was 15. She sat on the sidelines watching Owasso Varsity cheer & T&S Diamonds, helping coach, and cheering them on when she was recovering. Madison’s senior year she made All State cheerleader. She went on to Worlds and placed 2nd. She never gave up! Madison has inspired many to keep fighting the fight and keep living their dreams.
Picture
What would you like to share about your injuries that could motivate others?
I have torn my right and left ACL, yes, both of them. Every time that gets brought up; people always say, “oh if that were me, then I would have been done after the first one.” I chuckle to that and just nod. I have learned that people give up so easy, but they preach about how they love what they do. If you love what you do, then why would you give up when the going gets tough? I was always motivated by my passion and love for cheerleading. Each day I knew that I was one step closer to being back with my team. Injuries suck, believe me, but they only make you stronger. Use your love and your passion for whatever you do to fight through the pain.
Picture
How has your injury impacted your cheering?
My injury heavily impacted my cheering. One ACL surgery and rehabilitation takes about six months before you begin your sport. After having two surgeries, I was out for a while. I am back to stunting and tumbling, but there are certain things that I could do before my injury that I am unable to do now. Even though I am unable to do some things, I am grateful that I can cheer again. Every time I cheer, I always cheer like it is my last because you never know what could happen.
Picture
How has your life changed from before and after your injuries?
My life changed completely after my injuries. I was able to have a whole new perspective on life. My relationship with God grew closer than it was before, and I was able to understand why I had to overcome those obstacles. If I could go back and change the past, I wouldn’t. I learned so much more from my injuries than I would have learned without them.
Picture
In what ways has your participation in cheer impacted other ways of your life?
Cheer has impacted other aspects of my life in many ways. I have learned time-management skills; going from school to practice then to another practice. I had to find time to do my homework and times for when I needed a break. Cheer taught me how to be selfless because you are always doing something for the person next to you.

This is a photo from a CB West Football game that we cheered at!
How long have you been dancing and cheerleading and what got you into participating in those sports?
I have been dancing since I was 3 and I’ve been a cheerleader since I was 6. My older sister was a cheerleader one year and didn’t want to do it the next year so my mom asked me if I wanted to so I said sure! I have loved the sport ever since and have no intentions of stopping soon!

Do you see a future in cheer or dance? If not, what would you like to pursue as a career?
I would love to cheer for as long as I can. However, I know that I can’t be a cheerleader forever. I would love to cheer at whatever college I attend, hopefully all 4 years, and once I graduate, become a Pro with the Eagles squad! I had the opportunity to meet an Eagles cheerleader and she grew up cheering and dancing exactly like me so hopefully I will follow in her footsteps!

This is my mom and I because I love her!
What do you like best about being involved in the Inspiring Teens international program?
I love meeting new people! I think it is so awesome meeting and talking with people around the world and seeing what their hometown is like. It is not every day that you can “I know someone from Australia!”

Have you applied for a leadership position in student council yet?
I have not applied for a leadership position just yet. However, next year I would love to run for my class historian and then I think I would definitely earn some awesome leadership skills.

How do you manage to keep all your different activities organized?
Writing everything down! I am a big google girl so I use the google calendar that you can color code to keep it more organized, you can add the color and time to your events. It also connects to my email so I can add events from my email right to the calendar and it is all online so I can access it anywhere!

Zoe will be featured in issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!

Paityn Gibson - Oklahoma
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Photography & Nomination by Morgan Gibson - Serendipity Photography
Issue 26 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: This girl is a go getter! Varsity cheer all 4 years of high school, coaches the 5-6th grade cheer team, enrolled in multiple college classes junior and senior year, attending dental assisting at the technology college her senior year, babysits, and still makes time to be the best friend anyone could have. She’s always there to make you smile, laugh, and help anytime you need it.

Tell us about your high school career and something special you will never forget.
High school has brought many opportunities for me! I have been involved in NHS, cheer, and I am beginning dental assisting at Tulsa tech this year! I will never forget some of the relationships I have made with my friends. My friends have brought me so much joy during my high school career.

Why do you think you are the cheerleader you are today?
I think I am the cheerleader I am today because of my parents. They have always been there for me and have taught me so much about trying my hardest and always having a cheerful spirit! They have been a real inspiration for me!!

What is something you love about coaching younger cheerleaders?
Coaching younger cheerleaders is so much fun!! It challenges me to be a better leader myself. Coaching the little girls brings so much joy and happiness into my day! I love helping them learn things not just about cheer, but things that can help them feel confident about themselves.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Being a gymnast and keeping my grades up. I would practice for 22-24 hours a week. It was hard trying to manage that time. But having a steady schedule and managing it right really helped me.
Picture
What is it like stepping into a new chapter in your life?
Honestly, stepping into a new chapter in life is really scary. I didn’t know what to expect! But looking back at it know, I am so glad I did some of the things I did! It can bring so many opportunities and friends into your life!

What are some ways that someone can feel comfortable when they are making changes in their life?
What always helped me is to pray. When I pray to God, it makes me comfortable. Knowing that He is always there with me to protect me always helps me. Even when I am making a change in my life!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to always be confident and don’t worry about the little things. Enjoy your time during high school. It goes by fast.

Learn how to manage your time. Having a schedule and sticking to that schedule really helps me!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I see myself working as a dental hygienist and starting a family soon after that!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I really enjoy CrossFit and competing in CrossFit competitions. I have been in CrossFit ever since I quit gymnastics in 8th grade, and I love it!! I also love to travel!! I’ve been to many islands and traveling to different countries is an experience I will never forget!

Picture
Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can blow bubbles out of my eyes under water! (Really weird but one of my talents lol)

Three Things on your bucket list
Travel the world (especially Paris), go skydiving, and see the northern lights.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
This is a tough question. I try my best and try to be a great leader. I try to always look out for others and to always be kind. I try to be a good example in showing others about always having a good attitude, even when it is hard.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents very inspiring. They have always been there for me and loved me. They are a perfect example of amazing parents!

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Thank you so so much for this opportunity!! I can’t believe I have been nominated for this!! I really appreciate it!! ️
