Saralin Neal

Saralin Neal – Maine
Nomination & Photography by tracy jones photography ~ breezeseniors
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Saralin has been an inspiration and one of the most amazing teens I've ever met. She is a full time student, amazing dancer, and taking college courses all while her mom has been fighting cancer for the majority of her life. Her caring and positive attitude will make her one of the most amazing dance teachers a child could ever have the privilege of working with. Fun fact ... she is also a triplet.

What else should we definitely know about you?
I am studying early childhood education and hope to be a second grade teacher someday along with teaching dance. I have danced since I was three and love it. I am an assistant teacher to preschool children on the weekends. I am a triplet with two brothers. I have been homeschooled most of my school career so far.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I strong in my faith and my walk with the Lord. I am disciplined in dance. I try to be kind and caring to every person and sews and invest time into young children. I am motivated academically as I’m taking dual enrollment college classes this year, my senior year in high school.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would have to say dance. I love to dance and love to teach children about dance. It is great exercise, and you can use so much expression through it.

Lauren Briggs

11/22/2021

Picture

Lauren Briggs – Kansas
Nomination by Melanie Briggs
Photography by NKG Imagery
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lauren Briggs is inspiring because she is an honor student taking five AP classes this year and still finds time to serve on the youth leadership team at church. She tried out for a new sport, tennis, and was successful although she had never played it before competitively. She continues to play volleyball on a club team and is active in the school choir. She has also been selected for District and State Choirs multiple times while in high school. With all her activities she also finds time to be a brand ambassador for Altar'd State and have an active social life with friends.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would want to be interviewed about my family. Everyone in my family is very supportive of my goals and dreams and have always been there for me. I’m not just talking about my parents. My little sister and grandparents are there for me too. They have all been to countless games, concerts, and other events to cheer me on. Their unconditional love and my faith in God gives me the belief that I can accomplish my dreams.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination covered most of the activities I am involved in, but I would like to elaborate more on my passion for singing. I have been involved in Choir since I was in the 4th grade. I have been selected for Honor and District choirs many times and have been selected to State Choir four times. I am on the Choir Leadership Team at my school and sing for the youth group at my church. I also enjoy singing around the house for my family.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers I would talk about my faith. My belief in God has gotten me through some difficult times. Involvement in the youth group at my church has also given me a good group of friends that I can lean on and have lots of fun with. Being on the youth leadership team has also given me life skills in leadership, responsibility, and helped me grow as a person.

Elizabeth Van’t Zelfde

11/22/2021

Picture

Elizabeth Van’t Zelfde – South Dakota
Nomination & Photography by Push Play Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Elizabeth has met many challenges in her life with bravery and resilience. In 6th grade, her mother suffered major medical issues that forced Elizabeth to live with her aunt and uncle and help care for her little sister and newborn brother. While helping her mom recover, she continued caring for her siblings into high school. Throughout high school she has become independent, working part-time and keeping her grades up. She is currently taking college courses to prepare for her future. Elizabeth loves helping people and animals, especially cats. She is kind, caring, and stands up against bullying and racism.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be interviewed about kindness. Kindness is such a big factor in this world, especially today. A lot of people are unique and that is what makes everyone so awesome, except it is sad because people are so fast to judge instead. I think that if we were to put ourselves in other people’s shoes for just a day, we would realize that we don’t have it as bad or even have it better than we think we do.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Something inspiring to me that my nomination does not cover are the trips I make to Sioux Falls with my church to spread the gospel with the homeless. A few of the elders from my church will share a few bible stories and then my little cousins will sing a few children’s bible songs, and I will usually end it by singing one of my favorite worship songs. It truly makes me happy that we get to let them know they’re not alone and there can be a better life for them out there.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would have to say my family. My family has made me feel so loved throughout my life growing up. They have taught me to be the person I am today. I feel like I could definitely talk about them forever, as there are so many memories even though a lot of them have had their downs, we were all still together and fought through it with love.

Chloe Carreiro

11/22/2021

Picture

Chloe Carreiro – Rhode Island
Nomination & Photography by Andrea Sleiman-Carreiro
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Chloe Carreiro is funny, friendly, quirky, hard working and extremely well-mannered. Chloe does struggle academically, however, because she’s so hard-working, she almost always manages to make honor roll and most recently, even high honors. Her teachers have always admired her incredible work ethic, and outstanding manners. I can’t count the number of times teachers, parents, staff, coaches, and even her principal have stopped to commend me on her ”phenomenal manners” and kindness. If Chloe does nothing else in life, my only hope is that she inspires her peers to be kind, respectful individuals to their elders, and to one another.

What else should we know about you?
Most things don't come easily to me in life. Everything that I do, I work really hard at, but honestly, it does make the end result that much more rewarding. There's a quote about this that I love, it says: "You need to do hard things to be happy in life. Because the hard things ultimately build you up and change your life. They make the difference between existing and living, between knowing the path and walking it, between a lifetime of empty promises and one filled with progress."

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination did not cover that I've worked very hard to make it in cross country, as well as in track and field. I never ran much before and was not expecting it to be so challenging. I wanted to quit after my first practice, because I was so discouraged and truly felt I couldn't do it. But something told me not to- I don't like being a quitter. Now, less than a year later, I've completed my second season, and improved so much - it's the best feeling!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I feel most passionate about spreading kindness. I feel there's a real lack of kindness in this world, especially during these most recent times. So many people are suffering in silence, and sometimes all it takes is one person- one person saying one thing, to make a difference in your day. I know first-hand, because I've gone through some really tough times, especially during middle school. The kindness of just a few people is what pulled me through, and I want to be able to do the same for others.

Breklyn Craig

Picture

Breklyn Craig – Kansas
Nomination and Photography by Crossroads Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Breklyn Craig keeps herself busy with her Etsy business "Brek's Beads," leading out in her youth group, being involved in STUCO, Forensics, National Honor Society, Encore, as well as nannying children and working multiple jobs. Brek is especially committed to softball, which she has been playing for 14 years!
Brek would call herself a "cat lady" for sure, and she also loves design and creating artwork with her hands. Brek's heart of gold makes her a wonderful cheerleader for her peers, and her smile is contagious and instills confidence in others around her who might not be as extraverted as she is. Brek loves Jesus, and this enthusiasm for the gospel spills through in all she does.

What we definitely know about you?
Outside of my school time, I love to make jewelry, play softball, and be with my family :)
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to be with my family and be involved in my school and community!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Something I could talk about forever is my love for Jesus. Jesus is so good and the Lord gives us beautiful opportunities just like this all of the time. We just need to lean into him and know that he is good!

Allie Ingram

11/22/2021

Picture

Allie Ingram – North Carolina
Nomination by Lindsey Baxter Cooler.
Photography by Delaney Musgrave.
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine.

Nomination: Allie Ingram is a child of God. Her faith is unlike any others I have ever seen with a teen of her age. Not only is she mature in her faith, but she is an amazing role model to my 9 year old and all others that cross her path. She has been an advocate for anti bullying and inclusion in her community and has been able to donate 9 Buddy Benches to elementary schools along the east coast! She is a champion for those who feel they have no voice!

What else should we definitely know about you?
I am the current 2021 International United Miss Junior Teen.
I would love for you to know that no matter what I am doing in life, I am trying my best to stand up for what I believe in, and inspire those around me to do the same. My strong faith comes from the values my family has instilled in me, along with the idea that I need to be the friend that I want to have! Whether it’s working with the inclusion project, “The Buddy Bench,” or simply posting Bible verses on social media, I want others my age to see my strong opinions and not be afraid to share theirs as well!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Another important aspect of my life is school! I am very studious and am proud to say I currently have a 4.3 GPA. I take school very seriously because I love to challenge myself in order to grow. Knowledge is power, therefore by applying myself at school, I can grow in my knowledge and ability to relate to others. I also enjoy being a mentor to those around me, and my school provides me with a wide variety of people to interact with and impact in a positive way.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Something I could talk about for hours is the importance of inclusion! I feel that it is often an overlooked aspect of our social lives, especially as teens. However, I feel that as teens, we are just now figuring out who we will be in the future. I think that by including others and making sure everyone feels loved and valued, it will help not only those being included, but also the person who was brave and selfless enough to reach out to that person!

Avery Coggin

Picture

Avery Coggin – Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by Jennifer Abney Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Avery has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I have ever met. Her kind heart and sweet spirit was very apparent the first time we met. She is soft spoken and shy, but boy does she turn it on for the camera! Her infectious laugh will have you belly laughing with her. Avery is loyal and trustworthy and the type of friend you wish for. She loves fiercely and takes her role as big sister seriously. She works hard in school and loves to play tennis. Avery considers herself a foodie and would live in Disney World if she could. But the one thing that stood out to me during our long talk after her session was her faith. She and my daughter share a lot of the same attributes, so it was no surprise we hit it off straight away. Avery is a world changer, and I am so thankful I have the opportunity to work with her and nominate her as an Inspiring Teen!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would like to be interviewed about my experience of starting school in a Christian private school and transitioning to a public school where I was bullied and ridiculed. I was raised in a home where we put our faith in God where my classmates had a very different home life. This made it difficult to make good trustworthy friends due to our different beliefs. This has become a part of my testimony.

Tell us more about this transition. What was it like and how did it help you prosper?
I transitioned from private to public school in fourth grade due to my dyslexia; this was hard for many reasons. I expected everyone to have the same beliefs and values as me, but quickly learned that was not the case. Many of my new classmates had not even been to church. I was teased and called “little Christian girl.” This was overwhelming at times, but it did deepen my relationship with Christ. I realized it didn’t matter what they said about me because I truly believed my faith made me who I was. This transition strengthened my faith, and it gave me an opportunity to witness to others.

What struggles do you have in school and how do you overcome them?

I am dyslexic, but I overcompensate for my learning disability by working hard in class and developing good study habits. I have found pastel colored note cards to be very helpful when studying for tests. I am an overcomer; my learning disability does not define me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
How COVID19 affected the mental health of teens. A lot of teens missed out on many exciting things in their youth due to pandemic. We were in lockdown with our loved ones with no outside interaction. Things we grew up looking forward to and imagining what it would be like were put on hold or did not get to experience. For example, graduations, dances, sporting events, social gatherings, etc.

How has covid-19 affected your school/social life?
Due to COVID-19 I chose to start my eleventh-grade year online. In the very beginning, it was a struggle to teach myself as I did not have access to a teacher. When I had questions, I reached out to other students doing school online, or my parents. I had to teach myself. I do feel my study habits improved during this time, and I am no longer afraid to email a teacher. I feel I lost a lot of friends due to the pandemic - “out of sight/ out of mind”. When I returned to school for the second semester, I developed Social Anxiety. It has made it hard for me to talk to people, but I am working on that.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I rededicated my life as a sophomore at MFUGE Camp at Mississippi College while volunteering with children’s outreach. I realized my love for children, and it has inspired me to want to work with them. I look forward to seeing how God will use me in the future.

Tell us more about MFUGE Camp. What is it and how did you get involved?
MFUGE is a Christian Summer Camp held throughout the US. The first MFUGE I attended was at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. MFUGE is designed to give students a mission experience that opens their eyes to opportunities they can serve in their own communities. Boy, did it open my eyes.

What is a favorite memory from this organization?
At MFUGE I had the opportunity to work missions at a daycare. We shared the Gospel with the children through music and games. I still remember Tyler who was one of the students. He has a special place in my heart. I pray for Tyler and his family every night and think of him all the time. This was when I knew I wanted to work with children. God is so good!

What was your experience like with Jennifer Abney Photography? What did you love most about it? Why did you choose her for your senior portraits?
I had a fun experience with Jennifer Abney Photography; I was very nervous about getting my Senior Portraits taken because I struggle with self-confidence. I had seen some of her work, and thought it was amazing! She helped me to be myself. To be honest, I know it’s a God thing. Thanks Mrs. Jennifer!!

What are some other fun facts about you?
Fun facts about me; one day I would like to own a Hallmark Store with my mom. I love Halloween; I went trick or treating all throughout high school. I am a 3-year letterman in Tennis. I could eat Mexican food every day of the week. Last, my favorite show is The Office.

What do you love about tennis and what has been a big accomplishment for you in the sport?
I grew up playing tennis with my dad and granddad. This was time I had one on one with them. I enjoyed getting to know other players in the community through tennis camps. I have played throughout high school and lettered every year...even as a freshman.

If you could live in any building in Disney, which one would it be?
If I could live in any building in Disney it would definitely be the Haunted Mansion. It reminds me of Halloween. Did I mention I love Halloween? I love the outside of the building and the Ghost Host (dream job)!!! I get excited just thinking about it!

Picture

Hannah Offutt - Kentucky
Nomination & Photography by Rita Trejo Colley Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Hannah Offutt is a 16-year-old high school student that has never felt accepted in high school. She channeled that negativity and turned it into a positive when she discovered a love for makeup. She is an aspiring makeup artist with definite goals after graduation. She has come out of her cocoon and turned into a beautiful butterfly. Each photography shoot we do together she collaborates with me and my daughter in law (who makes her headpieces) for whatever idea we come up with. We've done regular portraits, romantic and warrior woman sessions and she has been amazing to work with. She has an amazing eye for detail and tons of ideas for our photoshoots. She's on a direct path to her career goals and nothing is going to stop her. She is a warrior!

What would you like to talk about most?

I am a self-taught makeup artist. I love to dress professionally yet stylish but also setting a fashion statement wherever I go.

How did you get started with makeup and how have you learned so much about it?
I started makeup when I was about 9 years old, starting with little play makeup when I got into middle school I started using name brands that came from a local store and worked my way up. I have learned so much about makeup by making the sky the limit and above! I feel so pretty with makeup, and it boost my self-esteem.

Do you enjoy putting makeup on other people or just yourself?
I enjoy putting makeup on other people because it makes me happy that people see faith in my work and would like to feel the same way I do with makeup; beautiful and confident. Having clients makes me so proud that I have come this far in life and was my biggest dream from the start.

Picture
Photography by Rita Trejo Colley Photography

How did you get hooked up with Rita Trejo Colley Photography? What did you love most about working with Rita and her daughter in law?
I found Rita through her daughter in law. Back in January Kadence Colley tested my phone asking for her makeup done from her wedding that my cousin/hairstylist referred her to me. I love working with Rita because she feels as if I have a chance and she’s making all my childhood dreams come true. As a kid I was bullied and was told I was a nobody. So I continued to do makeup which I got bullied for as well but their hate never stopped me in achieving my goals.

Tell us about a favorite shoot you've done with them.
My favorite shoot was the Halloween shoot. I put my makeup skills to the test and with all of mine, Rita’s, and Kadence talent we made an amazing shoot that was able to be in the first magazine I was ever feature in.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’m 16 with an aspiring imagination to help others feel gorgeous yet making myself feel worth it. Also showing my true personalities.

How would you describe your personality?
My personality is outgoing, creative, smart, outspoken, kind, positive, truthful, good minded, friendly, and people person, and lastly professional.

Picture
Photography by Rita Trejo Colley Photography

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is becoming a makeup artist. Coming a far way has made me so proud. I have never stopped doing what I love even with the hate. The biggest accomplishment is becoming a happy person who ignores the negativity.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say never give up on what you love. Chase the dreams you have. Nothing is ever impossible and don’t let anyone make you feel less than what you are. You will always be in a place where people hate, ignore the comments that does not pertain to you. always have confidence in what you want to achieve in your life.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I plan to be graduated from college from Marshall university in West Virginia. I also plan to get my business degree. After college I plan to go to cosmetology school and get my license in cosmetology. I soon plan to move to New York and continue doing what I love and that’s makeup and hopefully get accepted into a modeling agency. I also plan to focus on myself and have a happy mind that will get me far in life.

Picture
Photography by Rita Trejo Colley Photography

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to be around friends, and I also love to shop, swim, & lastly, I love to cheer.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is having a gut feeling and most likely it become true. I necessarily don’t believe in powers, but I do believe in gifts from God. Most the time when I have a feeling, I will think it over or ignore it. In the future it most of the time is true.

3 Things on your bucket list.
One thing that is on my bucket list is to go to Paris France and witness New York fashion week. A second thing on my bucket list is to go to bora bora. Lastly something on my bucket list is to meet a famous model like Gigi Hadid and ask her some questions of how she got to where she is today.

Who do you find inspiring?
Someone I find inspiring is Gigi Hadid. I love the way Gigi is an overall wonderful person who models and takes the hate pretty good. She is so confident and tries her best to succeed at everything she does.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Something that I may inspire a person is that I never stopped chasing my dreams and I have always stayed true to myself and didn’t let all the hate get in my way. I continued to do what made me happy and that is someone who people may look up to.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would love to win the cover because I want to prove people who made me feel like a nobody realizes that I’m on the right path to success and doing what I love. I have let their comments get to me before, but I obviously didn’t let it get in the way of making me happy. I’m so glad I met Rita and I’m glad she helps me along my journey I prayed for.

Tell us about your dancing.
A big part of my life is my dancing. I’ve been doing dance for about half my life. When I was about 7, I started ballet and fell in love with it. A few years later, I was on acrobatic competition team and participated in several competitions. I loved being on the stage with my teammates. There were some tough moments, but I learned so much by being a part of a team that relies on each other so much. We won a few awards and had a great time. I’ve also taken, jazz, contemporary, modern dance, gymnastics, and hip-hop classes.

What has been a favorite accomplishment from dance and why?
When I am practicing for a dance that I have been working on for a while, I feel so much accomplishment and reward being able to perform in front of others. I know all my hard work has been worth it and I feel good about myself.

What has been your favorite dance competition?
In June 2019, I performed at the KARS dance competition with my Jazz group. The experience was amazing! When the adrenaline kicked it, I was able to perform at my best and have tons of energy on stage. It was definitely one of my best performances of my life!

Tell us about a struggle you went through with dance and how you overcame it.
When I was on the acrobatic team, my back was slowly deteriorating. I ended up having to quit that team so I could recover. I was so sad to leave that team but now I am grateful that happened. Because of this break, I was able to try different types of dancing and I discovered my love for contemporary dancing.

What else should we know?
I am starting to get into art and willing to work hard at developing my talents.
I usually just use pencil and paper. I have also made some pieces out of clay.

How has Covid-19 changed you? What is something positive that came out of it for you?
Going through Covid was hard for me. My dance programs were closed, I couldn’t attend church every week, friends couldn’t hang out and school was cancelled for the rest of the year. I just didn’t have anything in my life to inspire me. But coming out of Covid, I have realized how grateful I am for my friends, family, and the activities I can be a part of again.

What things do you do to stay active in your community?
I have been able to help at lots of activities at the YMCA throughout my life. My mom worked there for about 10 years up until Covid hit. Every year she asked me to volunteer at some of their community events working with little kids. Within my church community, I have been a part of food drives, service projects cleaning debris from a property and also helping families in need living in my community.

What is like being the youngest of 4 kids? What is a favorite memory with your siblings?
I love having older siblings that I can talk to. We are all really close in age and in school. We all get along so well, hardly ever disagree on important stuff and my sisters are my best friends. My brother is always there to help when I really need him. My favorite memory is shopping with my sisters, going to lunch and jamming out to music in the car.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
How much I love my friends. Even friends I’m not super close with. I just love all of them and they are all amazing people. Being social is something that I need and crave. I just enjoy the feelings I have around others. I love to make jokes, make others smile and feel their positive energy. Making friends hasn’t always been easy for me. It was extremely tough and difficult for me to find friends that I could rely on. Going from a big friend group to only one friend was difficult. Now that I am a new high school and didn’t have any friends from Junior High, it’s been a positive experience. Even though I was dealing with this, something good came out of it- I got to spend more time of my family, and myself. I’m so grateful for that and I wouldn’t change anything.

Tell us why you chose Nicole Carson Bonilla Portrait Studio. What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My family has known Nicole Bonilla for about 20 years. She has become an award-winning photographer in the past 3-4 years, and she offered to take photos of me. She worked with me beforehand, did my hair and makeup, and provided the outfits for the photo shoot. She is so talented and fun to work with and this was so cool to be a part of.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

I would like to talk about mental health disorders. It’s not talked about enough! Girls and guys are struggling with this and don’t even know it. Just going through any kind of mental disorder is so much for teens and high school adds so much stress to us as well. Worrying about grades and sometime working- it’s just too much for us! I just want teens to feel like than can be open about what’s going on with them, big or small struggles. A big part of it is parents not knowing how to handle it too. I feel that every parent should learn how to handle this if their child ever goes through something hard. This is something that I see happening all around me. It’s hard to see my peers just keeping to themselves and never asking for the help that they deserve.

Sydney Gray – Alabama
Nomination & Photography by Narfunda Ross of 1033 Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sydney is inspiring to me because she is a quiet, humble soul. Sydney is a firm believer in God, grace and equality. She believes everyone deserves a chance and possibly a second chance. She often reminds us that respect is earned through hard work and kindness shown to others through her actions. She agrees to disagree with respect and reverence. Sydney is a friend that everyone would want because of her supportive nature and leadership qualities that she possesses while at work, at school, and on the field cheering or playing soccer.

What should we definitely know about you?
Even though I am fairly shy and an introvert, I do love interacting with people and volunteering in my community. I have had opportunities to work with the various cities and organizations in Chambers County and those are some of my fondest memories. I am also a huge animal lover and would stop anywhere to pet or help a dog.

How did you get involved in volunteering and what do you love most about it?
Through my mom’s work, I learned at a very early age, it’s about doing and giving. My mom and her best friend (my 2nd mama) Denise are always giving and doing things for others, whether people know it or not. They showed me it’s not about the credit but about getting it done for anyone in need. I love helping during Halloween for the City of Lanett’s Trunk or Treat and Christmas Tree lighting festival. Seeing the kids dressed up and the light in their eyes when I bend down to tell them hello or how cute they look, makes me feel like I made a difference in their day.

What has been one very special experience volunteering & why?
One year I volunteered at the Chambers County Sheriff Department’s Special Needs Rodeo. This rodeo is held in a carnival like atmosphere for all Special Needs students at all schools within a 40-mile radius of LaFayette. I remember during a prize walk that one little boy was scared of the music and wouldn’t walk, until I took his hand. He and I danced around the circle, and then he didn’t want to leave. For those few minutes, I feel like I made him feel safe while making him feel part of the event. Volunteering at this event has shown me how much of an impact one small, kind, and selfless act makes on another person’s life.

Do you have a dog?
Yes! I have Onyx, she is a Belgian Malinois mix rescue. She was abandoned as a puppy when a lovely family took her in and gave her a temporary home. This family loved her, but did not have enough time to take care of a dog. They had been searching for a home for this puppy for months. One day, they decided to take her to the same special needs rodeo I was volunteering at, hoping to find her a new family there. I was working at a game booth at the rodeo when one of the girls from the family was walking her on a leash. I started petting the dog and instantly fell in love with her. The girl informed me that they were looking for a home for her and I instantly said “I’ll take her.” Of course my mom was hesitant at first. I got the family’s contact information and went about my day, hoping and praying my parents would agree to take her in. The next day, April 6th, 2019, I had finally convinced my parents to let me keep her. The same day, she arrived at my house. It took some time for me to come up with a name for my new companion, until I realized every time someone would come to our house, she would sit in front of me and bark, in a harmless but protective manner. I then decided to name her Onyx. Onyx is a stone that is supposed to bring you protection. And after that, the name stuck. Onyx and I are currently spending our free days riding around in my car with the windows down, playing with her chew toys outside, and going for a swim at the lake.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
The time and dedication that I put into sports on and off the field. I absolutely love cheering competitively as well as soccer. I wish I had started soccer earlier. Our ladies soccer team has faced many obstacles over the past three years with multiple coaching staff changes and covid. However, I choose to see the best of that being on the team that won the first game in the history of VHS. I love it when everyone works together for the greater good and our win that night was the perfect example.

What has been a favorite memory with cheerleading? What is your team like and what is it like to spend time with them?
My favorite memory from cheerleading would have to be the first successful competition our competitive cheerleading team performed at. This year we performed at a UCA competition in Birmingham AL. We scored the highest score ever in the history of our competition team and we were able to receive a bid to Nationals! It was the most exciting moment I have ever encountered in cheer. A good word to use to describe everyone on my team is hard-working. Everyone puts everything they have into competition cheer Whether that be at practices, or competing on the mat. We never give up until everyone is fully satisfied with what we put out on that mat. It is so amazing to be around a group of such dedicated, happy, and sweet girls.

What has been a favorite personal accomplishment with soccer?
It would have to be winning the first game ever for the VHS Lady Rams Soccer program. It didn’t matter who scored, all that mattered to us girls is that we won, and it felt great!

Do you plan on participating in either sport in college? Why or why not?
I would love to continue being a part of soccer or cheer in college, but my plan is to focus on my classes and get where I need to be in order to pursue my dream profession as an orthodontist.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Teamwork and getting up over and over again after stumbling, You can't win unless you try. I've learned there are far more failures in life than wins, but those wins wouldn't have come, if we did not try as a team.

What is a valuable lesson you can tell younger peers about being frustrated when things aren't going right and how to get past it with a positive attitude?
Whenever I am frustrated, my go-to quote is “this, too, shall pass,” reminding me that things won't always be easy, but they certainly won't always be difficult either. I would say the same thing to anyone younger who is struggling, and also let them know that I am always available if they ever need someone to talk to.

Why did you choose Narfunda Ross of 1033 Photography for your senior portraits? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Narfunda for several reasons. First she loves Lanett, I mean really really loves the City of Lanett. Our city has gone through some pretty dramatic challenges over the past. Businesses leaving, vacant buildings and job loss. Mrs. Ross is part of the core that will keep Lanett going, growing and rebuilding. I wanted my images on the abandoned cotton mill site to be reflected in her artwork, while also showing the beauty of the downtown area and what a miraculous comeback the City has made. She is a fighter. She beat breast cancer, and she still mentors others who are going through the same thing she did with TEAM W.H.I.P. She always puts others first and I knew she would jump at the idea of the abandoned mill site.

What leadership quality would you say is your strongest?
Inclusivity. I never want anyone to feel left out or that they don’t belong. It is important for everyone to feel welcomed and comfortable in any situation they are in.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I have ever had to accomplish was to feel comfortable about my body image. Many of us girls today struggle with body positivity and how we look in the mirror. I was always insecure about my body and thought it would never look like the bodies of models on social media. I overcame this struggle by standing in the mirror every morning before I started my day, naming one good thing about my body. Each day I found more and more things I liked about the way I looked. Eventually, I got to the point where I started to feel more and more comfortable with my body image. After realizing how much better that exercise made me feel about myself, I started giving different people a compliment every day.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Always work hard for what you want! You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself with a degree in dentistry, attending orthodontics school. My plans are to open my own orthodontics clinic in the small town I grew up in. It has always been my dream to become an orthodontist, and to make kids want to smile all the time!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity would have to be hunting with my dad. I am older now, and do not have a lot of 1 on 1 time with my dad. One thing we have always done since I was a little girl was go hunting together and listen to classic rock while on the way there. I am happy that it is the one thing that has not changed since I grew up, and I plan to keep the tradition going for as long as possible!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is playing the piano. I started playing when I was about 8 or so. I always loved the feeling of playing such beautiful music.

3 Things on your bucket list
Seeing the northern lights
Traveling to as many countries as I can, learning their cultures and traditions.
Having children and starting a family.

Who do you find inspiring?
Several local women who are fighters and are STRONG! My principal Dr. Frankie Bell, who nearly died in a car accident, was told she would never walk again, and she proved them wrong and wrote a book. When you are with her, she makes you feel like there’s nothing you can’t do. Debbie Wood, who’s now our State Representative, she’s a breast cancer survivor and fighter. Karen Brown, who is a classmate’s mom, teacher and a breast cancer fighter and survivor. Lt. Sandra Crim, she’s our School Resource officer, a fighter and survivor, she gives to hundreds of children in our city every single Christmas.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
When I see other people overcome adversity and don’t complain, that inspires me! That makes me want to be better. If I can be half the woman that these ladies above are, then I know I can make a difference in someone’s life.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I love making the people around me happy! Being nice to someone and showing kindness has always been a great habit of mine. I try to spread positivity and joy as much as I can and I always stand up for what is right.

What should we know about you?
I absolutely love all things dance! I've been dancing for 9 years. I'm trained in all genres of dance. My favorite genres are contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop. I love talking about the benefits mentally and physically that dance has helped me with.

Tell us about a proud achievement in dance and why it was so special to you:
I was overjoyed when I attended Dupree National Competition and was the only dancer selected for a $1000 scholarship with Studio School College in LA. This was a big achievement for me. I felt like all my hours of hard work in dance was recognized and rewarded.

What has been your favorite competition to travel to?
Definitely Dupree Nationals. It felt like a family atmosphere, everyone was so welcoming. The teachers made you feel comfortable and inspired. I loved their conventions the most. It was a safe space for every dancer.

What has been the hardest thing about dance and how have you gotten through it?
Not comparing myself to other dancers and finding my own individuality. My own uniqueness and strengths helped me realize who I am as a dancer and how much I am thankful for the ability and skill that God has given me.

How is your school different from your studio?
I love both Teams. On my school team, I get to represent my school, as well as make high school memories with my dance sisters and brothers by performing at pep-rally’s and football games. At my studio it feels like a home. I get to train in all different genre’s and develop my dance skills as an individual.

Why did you choose Robert Kelly for your dance portraits? What did you love most about it?
Robert Kelley is known for his amazing dance photography. He travels all around the world and shoots amazing dancers. He’s been in this industry for years. My favorite part is receiving the finished product!

What has been a favorite volunteer activity and why?
I love to volunteer to help my school teachers. Right before the first day of school, I help my teachers organize their classrooms, deep clean when needed, and organize their supplies.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I'm an advocate for anti-bullying! Bullying stops us Teens from being who we want to be and prevents us from expressing ourselves freely. I encourage Teens to speak up! Do not feel alone. We are here together, and you matter.

Georgia Lillis

Georgia Lillis – Virginia
Nomination & Photography by Twig Road Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Georgia came into this world facing many obstacles, having multiple specialists at Children’s National before she was even earth side. Facing many surgeries and the potential of never walking, she never saw herself as different, or NOT being able to do ANYTHING she set her mind to. From preschool she won the hearts of coaches and teachers alike with her ability to light up a room and to accept EVERYONE. Despite her challenges, she’s made countless teams, recently her high school volleyball team and doesn’t allow that diagnosis to define her. She is an example of perseverance and strength for all!

What should we definitely know about you?

I actually don’t talk about my story enough. Growing up I never really saw what I was doing as a huge accomplishment. I was just playing sports or trying out for teams, or other moms would talk to my mom about my hair color. I would love to just talk about the normalcy of being different. People always say “wow I never would have known” to my mom when she tells my story. Give everyone you meet in life GRACE Bc you never know what they have been through in life to get to that point.

What is a favorite accomplishment in one of your sports?
Making my high school volleyball team is one of my favorite accomplishments. A lot of really talented players tried out and I feel very honored to have made it and represent my school.

What is the normalcy of being different? Tell us about it and the bonuses of being different.
The idea that everyone is perfect or the same or doesn’t have something different or unique about them is such a huge misconception. It’s actually quite opposite. And most of those differences tell the most amazing stories. And that is one of the many bonuses of being different, the really cool stories!

Picture
Photography by Twig Road Photography

What about your story do you want us to know?
I want people to know to never count me out. Sure I’ve been dealt a few challenges but I will always try and give it my all and a lot of times (more times than not) it works out in my favor! Never give up!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would love the opportunity to discuss the beauty in being unique. From disabilities to hair color, we are ALL unique and should be celebrated for it! Girls my age can get caught up in what seems like beauty Bc it’s the norm. But different/unique features make us interesting and special!

Picture
Photography by Megan Lillis

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I hope that I inspire others with what I have been through in my life, to never give up on your dreams. If you want to play a sport or hike a challenging mountain or run a marathon, don’t let anything hold you back from doing exactly what you want to do.

What is the hardest thing you have done where you have inspired someone specific at the same time?
The hardest thing I have done is when I had tendon lengthening surgery were I was double leg casted for weeks and two days after the cast removal had to play in an all-star basketball game. Needless to say, I struggled that entire game, I was slow at running, my legs just wouldn’t MOVE. But I didn’t give up and even though I wanted to cry I just kept going for my team.

Madelyn Bushley

Madelyn Bushley – Virginia
Nomination & Photography by Maura Varley Photography
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madelyn Bushley is a rock star! Not only is Madelyn an incredibly talented dancer, but she has been selected among her peers to serve as the dance team captain for the dance team that represents the performing arts high school in Central Virginia. Madelyn's kindness is evident in her eagerness to help incoming freshmen as a "Knight" mentor and she is currently working on designing and implementing a capstone project for the Thomas Dale High School Specialty center. When not showing tremendous school spirit, you will likely finding this athletic senior in the mountains snowboarding with her family and friends.
Picture

Tell us about your dance career.
I started dancing around home before I was even old enough to take formal classes. When mom realized how much fun I had when dancing, she signed me up for ballet and tap at the age of three. At the age of 11, I had my first tap solo in a ShowStoppers competition. I have studied ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, and lyrical. In eighth grade I decided to apply to the Thomas Dale Speciality Center for dance for high school. I was thrilled when I was accepted! Currently in school, we are studying Bartenieff and his movement. While this helps me accentuate my dance movement and gives me a broader perspective, my favorite style of dance is jazz. I enjoy upbeat music like “All Night” by Chance the Rapper.

What does it mean to you to be the dance team captain? What duties/roles does that entail for you?
As dance team captain, this means being a role model to the rest of the team. Ever since I was a freshman, I had the goal of becoming captain. Now that I hold that honor, I want to make sure that I set an example to the rest of the team. I want to be someone the team looks up to. In summer 2021, we held a four-day camp to learn sidelines and a jazz routine for the upcoming games and competitions. Due to Covid, practices had not been convened in over a year. I had to step up and provide leadership for the new Freshmen and Sophomore members of the team; they had never experienced a practice. At the conclusion of camp, I was commended for my leadership skills from my coach. During this time, I learned that you have to be willing to put your friendships with other teammates aside in order to be an effective leader and your peers will respond when you lead with mutual admiration and respect.

What do you love most about your dance team?
I love the closeness we have on the Knightettes Dance Team. We always have such a good time at practice or games because of our combined goofiness. I also appreciate the “drive” of my teammates. When it is time to get serious and prepare for competition or perform for fans, I know that we will put in the effort to achieve a common goal.

What is a favorite dance memory and/or accomplishment?
At UDA dance camp in the summer of 2019, I auditioned for All-American, achieved that goal, and received a medal. This is awarded to dancers who establish showmanship and perform extraordinarily well. This was a huge accomplishment and I was thrilled!

Why did you choose Maura Varley Photography for your senior portraits? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
One of my close friends had posted a picture on social media saying that she was on Maura Varley Photography’s Senior Team. I checked out Maura’s Instagram and saw that she was seeking additional team members. I decided to message her and ask if she was still accepting seniors. Low and behold, she was, so I became a part of the team!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience. It's great being a part of such an amazing team. The other girls are genuine, and we all build each other up. We have so much fun doing photoshoots together. For my senior session, Maura had asked me what preferences I had as far as location and backgrounds. She has an innate ability to take ideas and merge them with the perfect location, setting, and props! The photo with me wearing my pointe tutu holding the balloon bouquet is so unique and it was very fun to do! What doesn’t show is that it was like 100 degrees that day! Maura was prepared with cold drinks and snacks. She is truly one of my favorite people.

What is a "knight mentor" & what are your roles and responsibilities as a member of this organization?
A knight mentor is a student from Thomas Dale who holds the responsibilities of mentoring the incoming freshman in the week prior to school starting and throughout their freshman year. The mentorship continues into the students’ sophomore year. Thomas Dale Juniors and Seniors are eligible to be council members (knight mentors). In order to become a council member, you must be invited to apply and complete an application process. After being accepted, you are trained on how to guide new students and how to connect with them in a positive way.
Picture
Photography by Jackie Tucker

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Overcoming my anxiety has been extremely challenging for me during my high school years. When others had shared experiences or struggles with anxiety, I always thought it wasn’t that bad and that it would be easy to overcome. Now that I experience it, I realize how much of a toll it can take on you. It is challenging, but with support it is something you learn to accept and adapt. You learn your limitations, when you need to make time for yourself, and when you should extend yourself to do things that must be done.

3 Things on your bucket list
For my bucket list, I would like to do the following in no particular order, 1-Hiking Pikes Peak, 2-Visiting the Grand Canyon, and 3-Traveling abroad.

How did you get into Hip Hop and what do you love most about it?
I've been dancing since I was 5 years old. My mom was a Zumba fitness instructor to both adults and kids, so I went to her classes and fell in love with it! I then started taking everything from Jazz to Tap to Ballet, but Hip Hop was my THING! When I hear the beats in Hip Hop music it naturally makes me want to move. There's something different about dancing Hip Hop than all other styles of dance, it's powerful, fun and hypes everyone up!

Tell us about your competitive Hip Hop dance team. Where do you compete and what do you love most about competitions?
This is my second year dancing competitively on The Officials Hip Hop Team at Next Step Dance and I absolutely LOVE it! We have about 40 girls on our team, and we rehearse all Fall season to prepare for our competitions in the Spring. We are so blessed to have talented directors and choreographers to learn from. We mainly compete around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, but I’m hoping we make it to finals and get to travel to other states. I thrive on the energy of performing on a stage! It’s such an adrenaline rush!

Why did you choose Vanessa Hendrickson with Contemporary Portraits for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Vanessa actually chose me! She saw me on TikTok and noticed that my channel, @dancert19, was wholesome vs. some of the inappropriate channels that TikTok gets a bad name for. She reached out to my mom and said she was looking for a teen brand rep for her photography. Vanessa said she loved the positive messages that I share on my channel. I have done 4 photo shoots with her now and have so much fun posing in different atmospheres. My favorite photo shoot was when it randomly snowed, and we got to play in the snow.

What should we definitely know about you?
What you should know about me is that while I want to go to college after high school for business, fashion or dance, I have a deep desire from God to be a missionary. I have a heart for children and want to specifically help underprivileged children. I started taking American Sign language this school year and have naturally picked it up. I am wondering if God will use my skills to help hearing impaired children. All I know is that I am truly passionate about helping people!

What are your plans to help with underprivileged children?
I want to visit with these children and share about the love, hope, peace and forgiveness found in Jesus Christ. I want to tell them about God’s truth found in the bible and help them to know that they are children of The Lord. I want to use my gifts that God has given me. I love various forms of art. I would enjoy dancing with them, braiding their hair, drawing pictures and teaching sign language to those that are hearing impaired.

Tell us about the leadership team at your church. What do you feel is your strongest leadership quality?
Every Sunday I am required to be to church at 8am for lead team. This is a big commitment as I must make sure I don’t stay up too late on Saturday nights. I truly enjoy it because it’s a team of like-minded students and we get to help organize activities in our student ministry. I enjoy greeting all the students on Sundays and especially being a friendly face for those that are visitors. I have been told by others that I have a welcoming smile. I try my best to spread kindness and joy to others daily.

Tell us more about Hope Squad. What is it, what inspired you to join it, and what do you bring to the table?
Right before my Freshman year, I was nominated by my classmates to be a Hope Squad representative. My classmates then voted me in, and I had to submit a Q & A to the Hope Squad director. I love Hope Squad because we spread kindness and mental awareness to the students at my school. I helped by writing positive messages around the building with sticky notes and sidewalk chalk. It’s amazing how much that can uplift a student! I also helped organize weekly events, like wearing Yellow on Wednesday for “Hope Day,” and we had a “Hope Walk” event.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Towards the end of my Freshman year, I was tested at school, upon MY request, and was diagnosed with dyslexia. This meant I had been overcompensating for all those years during elementary and middle school! I am so grateful to now receive the help and necessary accommodations that I need to be successful. I want others to know that you should always speak up when you think something may be wrong with you and when you need help. I am now thriving and excelling in my Sophomore year, and I see being dyslexic as a gift!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would love to share with my peers the importance of modest images on social media! As a Christian, I believe God's word when He says we should treat our body as the temple of God and dress modestly. I fell you can still show your beauty and fashion, without showing too much skin. When you show too much of your body, it makes you seem desperate, easy and lack self-confidence. Why would anyone want to be viewed that way? I know my worth and value and I would love for others to know that too.

Eli Morris

Eli Morris – Kentucky
Nomination & Photography by Morris Photography
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Eli is inspiring because he is overcoming obstacles and has a positive outlook on what life has dealt him lately. Eli has been recently diagnosed with Alpha-Gal (an allergy to red meat, including beef and pork) as well as several other foods. Eli is a talented young man, helping run his family farm and raising his own herd of registered livestock. Eli plays the guitar, which has been an outlet for him.

Picture
Photography by Morris Photography
What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I want to raise awareness about Alpha Gal, a disease caused by a tick bite. Alpha Gal causes an allergy to all red meat. An allergic reaction can range from a severe stomach ache, nausea, and headache to hives or an anaphylactic episode. With a diagnosis of Alpha Gal, I have to read each and every nutrition label before I eat anything. There are meat byproducts in so many foods, including gelatin in fruit snacks and medication capsules. There are so many people struggling with this disease and the public doesn’t really know much about it.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The topic I would present would be food allergies. So many people live with food allergies, some even have to be home-schooled and/or miss out on social functions. I was recently diagnosed with Alpha-Gal, an allergy to all red meat. Alpha-Gal is not a well known disease and I would like to help share information about it. I am also allergic to several other foods which makes it a real challenge to plan dinner, and especially to eat out.
Recently being diagnosed with Alpha-gal, as well as allergies to milk, almonds, and shrimp, I am learning first-hand how difficult it is to live and socialize with food allergies. It is important that people understand the struggles and emotions that come with watching everyone else eat what you can't and having to miss out on events such as going out to eat or having to pack meals to stay the night at a friend's house. Food allergies do not just affect what you can eat, but food by-products are found in things such as soaps, shampoos, deodorants, and even medicines.

How has Alpha-Gal affected you and what do you want others to know about it?
With a diagnosis of Alpha Gal, I have to read every nutrition label before I eat anything. There are meat byproducts in so many foods, including gelatin in fruit snacks and medication capsules. Planning family meals such as Thanksgiving is a huge endeavor. I can’t eat regular butter, can’t have foods with beef broth or bullion, nor can I have regular mac-n-cheese. Eating out takes research. My family and I can no longer just stop at the nearest restaurant. I have to research the ingredient list of each food before ever choosing from the menu.

What are your favorite foods to eat when planning dinner?
Ever since I was diagnosed with Alpha-Gal, with my new restrictions on what I can eat, the average person would think I'm a vegan. This disease will steal your ability to eat any red meat with several other foods that vary by person, such as milk for me. That means no fast food restaurants, limited on gas station snacks, and foods at the grocery store have to either be vegan or very closely examined for byproducts. Chicken strips have been my go-to food. I also really like Jelly Belly jelly beans, Annie’s Vegan Mac-n-Cheese and unfrosted Pop-Tarts.

Tell us more about your family farm. What are some of your favorite things to do on it?
I have my own herd of registered Kiko goats that are pastured alongside my parents’ herd. We have always lived on a farm, but moved to a larger farm in 2019. The name of our farm is Blessed Acres Farm because my parents say they feel blessed to have found it because it is exactly what they have wanted for a long time. I like to hunt and fish. We have a pond on our farm and a lake right down the road. I also love to ride horses. We own three Tennessee Walking Horses.

What have you learned about farm life that non farmers may not know?
Raising livestock takes dedication, hard-work, organization, and can also be emotional. We have to meet the needs of the animals no matter what. It doesn’t matter if it's freezing or raining, animals still must be fed. Family vacations take lots of planning because you have to have someone reliable to be available to take care of the livestock while you are away. Organization is also very important in raising livestock. Record keeping is detrimental to our future goals that we strive to achieve. We only keep the best to breed and send the rest to market. Taking them to market or dealing with the loss of a sick goat can be emotional at times.

Do you plan to go into farming as an adult? Why or why not?
I can imagine myself, after graduating from college, living on a farm. On this farm I will be raising livestock, although I am raising goats now it may change when I get older. Learning how to work with livestock, such as giving vaccines and how to focus on the health of every individual goat, will help me in college one day when I learn large animal and wildlife veterinary science.

What was your portrait experience like with Morris Photography? Having a mom as a photographer, do you collaborate on ideas together or do you let her run the show?
Although I usually let my mother run the show, sometimes we work on ideas. My mom is the one who is teaching me how to shoot photography with her own tips and tricks. Morris Photography has been in business for about 5 years now, and I can still remember the first couple shoots I helped with.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I have my own mowing business. I currently have four yards that I mow and I also mow our church's yard for free. I am really good at saving money and I am currently saving up to purchase a truck next year. I am learning to play guitar and have taught myself several country music songs.

Why did you get into landscaping?
I have been mowing since my feet could reach the mower deck and weed eating since I was strong enough to carry a weed eater. Maintaining the yard has always been mine and my brother’s responsibility. I started looking for paying jobs so that I could make money and save for a nice truck. I started by asking neighbors and giving them estimates then I got a few jobs that my dad has to drive me to. Next year, I plan to expand because I will be able to drive.

What was the most challenging thing about starting your business? What do you find the most rewarding?
The most challenging thing about starting my business was to find customers in our rural area without having to drive. I have a few yards that I mow that are right down the road, but I have a couple that my dad has to drive me to. The most rewarding part is knowing that at 15 years old, I have my own business. It is also rewarding because I get to see that a nice looking yard makes people happy.

What is your favorite country song to play? Who is your favorite country singer?
I really enjoy playing the guitar. I have taken guitar lessons for a year and half. One of my favorite songs to play is Lady May by Tyler Childers. When it comes to music, I like old country and classic rock. I also love bluegrass and enjoy listening to it with my grandfather. My favorite country singer is Hank Williams.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I plan on being in college pursuing my dream of becoming a large animal and wildlife veterinarian. I plan on going to Auburn University.

3 Things on your bucket list
Have a family and live in a house on a hill.
Write and publish music.
Help people know about Jesus.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find both of my grandfathers inspiring. I look up to my Grandpa Kevin because of how wise he is. Any question that I ever have about anything that has an engine, Grandpa Kevin can answer. He is also very kind to people. My Dot-Dot has always been my best friend. I spend several days a week with my Dot-Dot. Before he got sick, we’d work together on his rental properties and go fishing. I love listening to his stories about growing up. My Dot-Dot is a hero. He is retired from the Army and fought for our country.

Olivia Kocon – Indiana
Nomination by John and Jeannette Kocon
Photography by Trysh Jaeger Photography
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Olivia is a strong girl who is always busy doing stuff. Whether it’s roller derby, taekwondo, cheerleading, beauty pageants, modeling, or working two jobs she always has a smile on her face. She’s a very hard worker and loves reading as well as talking about important topics in today’s world. Olivia is kind to everyone and absolutely adores Cameron Boyce. Olivia’s favorite quote from him is, “We all go, what you leave should be bigger than you.” She also loves fashion and says “People are going to judge you no matter what so mine as we’ll be yourself, and do you.” Olivia has worked two jobs since her freshman year and has accomplished so many things through her life.

How did you get into taekwondo and what do you love most about it?
I got in taekwondo because my parents wanted me to learn self-defense. I ended up loving it and have stuck with it ever since. My favorite are round houses and I love the people, my instructor, and the kicks we learn as well as other self-defense tactics.

What is your cheer life like and what has been a big accomplishment for you with it?
Cheerleading is definitely a busy schedule. Cheer life is hard work, dedication, ups and downs, of course the fun games, and occasionally hearing people say that it’s not a sport. My biggest accomplishments with cheer are winning the jump contests at competitions and winning All American two years in a row.

Tell us about your love for fashion and makeup.
I have always been the one to always dress extra or different anywhere I go. I feel like fashion is a fun way of expressing yourself and life is too short to care what others think. So, mine as well have fun with it! And of course, I love makeup who doesn’t :)

What do you feel like is one of the biggest topics for teens today and what are the pluses and minuses for you as a teen going through it?
I feel like social media, climate change, and politics. I feel that this can be scary but on the plus side I believe us teens/our generation is the future.

Picture
Photography by Trysh Jaeger Photography

Why did you choose Trysh Jaeger Photography for your senior portrait photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Trysh because I have always wanted to be a model and I saw that she was asking for Model Reps so I was of course like yes! I love having her as my photographer she is great to work with and I love the energy and the model team.

What genre do you like to read the most and what are you reading now?
I really don’t have a favorite because it’s so hard to choose! I would say either fiction, fantasy, or romance.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard, have fun, find your passion, put yourself out there, be kind to everything and everyone, and people are going to judge you no matter what so mine as well do what you want..dress how you want.. and be you!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself going to college, get different certificates so I can have some side jobs, traveling, and still doing the sports I do!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?

This isn’t really an activity but my favorite month is probably December because everyone is always happy, in the Christmas spirit, it’s so pretty outside, and all of the other fun activities in December.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I have many small weird talents haha. I can move my ears back and forth, I can shake my eyes really fast, and I have a super long tounge.

3 Things on your bucket list
1) Go to Australia Zoo
2) Go to Hawaii
3) Sky Dive

Picture
Photography by Bellisimo Photography

Tell us about your roller derby activities.

Oh gosh we have so many fun games we play at practices to prepare for games. My personal favorite is Blood and Thunder which everyone skates around the track, and we hit each other on skates. If you get out of the track area or fall, you’re out. The last person standing is the winner. We also practice jumping on skates, safe falling, hitting, and 27/5 which is 27 laps around the track in 5 minutes. Everyone is so friendly and it’s just a great time!

Who do you find inspiring?
Besides my parents definitely Cameron Boyce. He was such a kind good person. And my favorite quote for him is, “We all go. What you leave should be bigger than you.”

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel that because I love everyone, I’m outgoing, and I’m not afraid to put myself out there.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
My Instgram is olivia._.k22 if anyone wants to follow LOL. No but honestly just thank you for accepting me as one of the Inspiring Teens for this Magazine. I really appreciate it! And thank you to everyone who voted for me!

Gracie Hines – West Virginia
Nomination & Photography by Lutrisha Nicole Photography
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Gracie Hines is an all-around student who is involved in multiple extracurricular activities and volunteering, and she does so while keeping a 4.3 weighted GPA. Gracie is on the Varsity and Competition Cheerleading squad. Gracie is also Vice President of her school’s FBLA, a member of the National Honor Society, and a Promise Scholar. Gracie’s beauty is apparent, but she also has a beautiful talent—Art; Gracie won 1st place for the 2021 Congressional Art Award. Gracie has used her artistic talents to volunteer her time to paint murals for local shops/schools. Gracie is the definition of an Inspiring Teen.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would most like to be interviewed about my passion for helping further research in the medical field.

What would you like to develop?
I would love to develop new medications for diseases that are currently uncured, as well as help regulate drug prices for existing medication for those who cannot afford it. Pharmaceutical companies should not be allowed to increase prices by sometimes 200% just to pay themselves, when people all around our country are suffering.

How can this be accomplished? / What can be done?
The first step in my opinion is focusing on these uncured diseases more. I feel as if though diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s aren’t focused on enough, and the lack of attention is the reason for no cure. As for the price increases, we need to publicize how much it really costs the companies to manufacture these medicines and show that they could be sold for a lot cheaper.

Tell us more about your cheer career. When did you get started, what have been some memorable wins, etc. What is a favorite memory from your competition cheer squad?
I cheered when I was super little, took a break, then started again in 8th grade, and have cheered ever since. Some of the most memorable wins has been during basketball season. Last year, both of our boys and girls varsity teams made it to the state tournaments, and the buzzer beaters that got them there were insane. A favorite memory from competition would probably be during the practices, when we would smack heads or get kicked in the face during stunts, laugh, and keep going. Really shows our drive and spirit.

Why did you run for vice president of your school FBLA and what does your job now entail? What do you find most fulfilling in your role?
I ran because I wanted a leadership position somewhere, and FBLA interested me the most. I now help run meetings, make meeting agendas, and help schedule community service events. I find helping my community most fulfilling, as we do a large variety of projects throughout the year.

What has been a favorite volunteer activity within your membership of NHS?
Due to covid, we haven’t been able to do much within the community. We do have planned to donate items to the Veterans really soon, which I’m excited about.

What is Promise Scholar and what does it involve on your end?
Promise Scholar is a scholarship that is given out in West Virginia. You must meet certain requirements such as having a high enough score on the SAT/ACT tests and having enough GPA. Being a promise scholar is highly respected, as many people in the state don’t qualify for it.

We would love to see and for you to tell us about your favorite piece of art!
My favorite piece of art that I have done would probably be the hyper-realistic cherry piece that I did for the Congressional Art Competition. It took over 30 hours to complete, but every second was worth it.

What was your photoshoot like with Lutrisha Nicole Photography and what did you love most about your senior portrait experience?
All the sessions that I have had with her have been so much fun. For this one, we went up on a scenic highway in a neighboring county, which is nationally famous for the views and colors during the fall. What I’ve loved most is probably her obsessing over how good a picture is after she takes it. It makes me laugh every time. Also, her husband is hilarious as well. He always makes sessions so fun.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Besides everything mentioned, I also work a part time job in a kitchen in a local deli. 4 of my 8 classes are college level/dual enrollment classes, and I have maintained straight A's my entire life. Also, throughout high school, I have taken the most challenging courses offered, including AP. I am also a member of our school's science bowl team, and in FBLA, I placed 3rd at the state level in my category. Finally, I also interned for the West Virginia House of Delegates last winter.

How do you balance all your activities and still maintain such a high GPA? What advice would you give to others who might be struggling trying to fit it all in?
Balancing all of this is honestly about time management. Staying on top of things and not procrastinating is what really helps me and keeps my stress levels relatively low. The advice I would give would be to not procrastinate, and if you get things done early, then you have more free time.

Tell us more about your internship with West Virginia House of Delegates. How did you get the internship, and what did you do there? What was your biggest take away?
I was nominated by my history teacher at the time, and apparently, they liked my application. I got to sit in on house sessions and listen to new bills being discussed. I went and got snacks and coffee for the delegates and had the chance to ask questions after the session was adjourned. My biggest take away would probably be how surprisingly laid back the environment was. I was expecting the law-making process to be super strict.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

Maintaining my schoolwork after the passing of my dad. Got through it through an insane amount of determination and, quite honestly, a lot of distraction.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard, and always believe in your abilities. You can do more than you think.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I’ll probably still be in college in 5 years, most likely in graduate school.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I really enjoy baking and cooking in general.
Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My only real talent is art I think, and it isn’t really hidden at this point.
3 Things on your bucket list
1. Travel the world
2. Help the most people that I can.
3. Get a cat and a husband, in that order.

Who do you find inspiring?
My sister, Kelsi.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
People always comment on my work ethic, and I would have to agree that’s why I’m inspiring. I work so hard at everything I do.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Thank you for the opportunity!

Lydia Denton

Picture

Lydia Denton – North Carolina
Nomination & Photography by Covey Denton
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lydia Denton is an inventor, volunteer, and science lover. She has won several national science invention competitions including the CITGO Fueling Education and EverFi NHL National Science Fair. She is a gifted public speaker and recently competed in the World Regional Oratorical Optimist speech competition. She volunteers and serves on the Jr. Board of Imagination Station, the local science museum. She also recently founded a non-profit to help combat the problem of E-Waste (Electronic Waste). Lydia is a straight A student at a title 1 charter school. In her spare time, she enjoys participating in our local community theater.

What should we definitely know about you in 100 words or less?
I am an inventor. I want to make the world a better place because I am in it. When I see things I don’t like, or problems in the world, rather than complain, I look for solutions. Maybe the solution is an invention or a non-profit or a change in my attitude or actions. I love inventing things to solve problems. From a helmet based on a woodpecker’s anatomy to stop concussions to a car seat to prevent hot car deaths in children, my inventions will someday make a difference in the world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have been asked to speak at several schools over ZOOM, including Shippenburg University where I got to talk to future teachers. I have been able to talk to students in Cyprus (the country), California, Kentucky, and many other places. Encouraging other kids to share their ideas and invent. I also am on WITN news and share at-home science experiments so that more people can fall in love with science.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I feel like I could easily present on not giving up on your big ideas, just get help accomplishing them. It took me over 100 tries to get a working prototype of my car seat. It took several people helping me and educating me on how to do circuits, coding, and GPS. It also took a lot of research and help for me and my siblings to found our non-profit organization to combat E-waste.

Kendall Rissler

11/1/2021

Picture

Kendall Rissler – Kentucky
Nomination & Photography by Melissa Sue Francis Photography
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kendall Rissler is inspiring because she knows perception is the key to success. Kendall was diagnosed with Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder and Orthostatic Intolerance, making concentration difficult and her physical body not always able to keep up with her peers. Instead of excuses Kendall sought strategies and now holds a 4.2 GPA, is in two competitive gifted programs for art and academics, a member of the National Honor Society, works a part-time job, and is fostering two baby kittens. Kendall believes if you perceive an obstacle as an opportunity, the journey to success becomes an adventure.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed on what it is like to have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. I used to see ADHD as a curse but now I know it is a gift for the creative and adventurous parts of my personality. It hasn’t always been easy but ADHD is a part of who I am and I chose to shine on my strengths and not shame my struggles. You should definitely know that I love my cats! I love that they have unique personalities and like to do things on their own time, a lot like me.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Not in my nomination, is that I am proud of myself for stepping outside my comfort zone. I was a shy person who blended into the shadows, made good grades and worked on my art at home. An opportunity for an art piece commission became available and I presented my work and was hired. It was scary but for 30 hours I worked on my commission in front of the public eye. Being exposed with my art gave me the courage to adapt a self-style I always wanted, join new clubs, and not want to hide in shadows anymore.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would really like to present a topic on social empathy and ethics. I strongly believe by having more discussions on tolerance for differing opinions we can help reduce division in our country. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is the key phrase for this type of discussion. Personal beliefs widely differ in the United States but should be allowed to be held and treated with respect. By exploring our individual beliefs, as if they were outside the norm, empathy with regards to safety and acceptance for our neighbors’ beliefs can be better understood.

I was going through a rough time in my personal life and she reached out to me and told me that she was praying for me and loved me. It meant the world to me to know that someone her age has such a big heart and a strong faith. She is absolutely beautiful inside and out. I want her to know that she is special and that girls like her don’t come along very often. She inspires me to be a better person.

I am in Peer tutor, National Honor Society, Pep club, and Key club. I love helping everyone when I can because I know everyone can always use an extra compliment or smile. I plan to attend Murray State and study medicine to become a Nurse Practitioner.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about mental health. It is such a huge thing in my life and so many others. Most people do not realize how little things affect people’s moods, but it could really set off their whole day. Being nice is just the decent thing to do. Mental health should always be put first and I feel should be more normal to talk about. It is something that everyone has to find a common ground with and it is not something people should be ashamed of.

What and who got you started in working with cattle?
I have wanted to show cattle as long as I can remember, but I started off with showing lambs because my parents didn’t feel safe with such large animals to begin with. Once I showed my dedication and commitment, I got my first calf at 10 years old, and fell in love.

Tell us more about what raising show cattle entails on your end.
Raising show cattle takes drive, determination, responsibility, and confidence. It’s not for a person who is lazy or shy. It teaches me growth. It creates structure of life and teaches you how to be a better person.

What is a favorite achievement from raising and showing them?
My favorite achievement from raising cattle would have to be having my heifer that I won my first show with.

Is this a career you are interested in going into?
I would like to expand our family farm by adding to the number of show cattle we sale and show.

What is your favorite part of high school and what will you miss the most?

My favorite part about high school is volleyball. I made lasting friendships, and it helped me learn how to lose gracefully. I will miss my routine the most. In high school, I knew what to expect and it wasn’t in scary.

What are your after high school plans?
After high school I plan on attending a community college for 2 years, then going to medical school so I can become an anesthesiologist.

Why did you choose Samantha Shoemaker for your senior portraits? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found her Instagram account and I fell in love with the way she took her pictures. I had an amazing experience during the photo shoot. I loved the end result because of how amazing she was at capturing the moment.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a hard worker. When I put my mind to something nothing can stop me, that’s why I am graduating a year early. I am a Christian and my strength is found in Christ alone.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I was to present a topic that I could go on and on about, it would be about the importance of having something in your life that matters so much that you work hard even after you fail and try harder the next time.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
At one time I struggled with body image. I wasn’t comfortable in my skin, so I hid behind clothes, and constantly compared myself with others. I turned all of those negative emotions into action, and I took control of my life. I was more active, which made me feel better about myself.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Never give up doing what you love, even if it’s not the “cool thing”. Never stop trying new things until you find that one thing that makes you feel like you. I live in a town where showing cattle isn’t necessarily the “cool thing”. When I realized showing cattle gave me more happiness and a better sense of accomplishment, I decided to stop competitive cheer in order do what I feel like I was meant to do on a personal level.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself in medical school pursuing my dream of being an anesthesiologist. In my free time I hope to mentor other showman and help them in honing in on their showmanship skills.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite pastime is watching Netflix and relax at home with my family since I’m always going.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Against what my family says, I do believe I have a wonderful singing voice.

3 Things on your bucket list
  1. Have a steer at the sale of champions
  2. Go to Greece
  3. Build a house on the western plains

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mother inspiring. She is the strongest women I know. She is selfless, caring, and so smart. She is my biggest inspiration.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
My inner strength to not go with the crowd and stick with what I know is right in my heart hopefully gives other girls my age the courage to stand out instead of fitting in.
