Elizabeth Van’t Zelfde – South Dakota Nomination & Photography by Push Play Photography Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
Nomination: Elizabeth has met many challenges in her life with bravery and resilience. In 6th grade, her mother suffered major medical issues that forced Elizabeth to live with her aunt and uncle and help care for her little sister and newborn brother. While helping her mom recover, she continued caring for her siblings into high school. Throughout high school she has become independent, working part-time and keeping her grades up. She is currently taking college courses to prepare for her future. Elizabeth loves helping people and animals, especially cats. She is kind, caring, and stands up against bullying and racism.
What would you most like to be interviewed about? I would love to be interviewed about kindness. Kindness is such a big factor in this world, especially today. A lot of people are unique and that is what makes everyone so awesome, except it is sad because people are so fast to judge instead. I think that if we were to put ourselves in other people’s shoes for just a day, we would realize that we don’t have it as bad or even have it better than we think we do.
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover? Something inspiring to me that my nomination does not cover are the trips I make to Sioux Falls with my church to spread the gospel with the homeless. A few of the elders from my church will share a few bible stories and then my little cousins will sing a few children’s bible songs, and I will usually end it by singing one of my favorite worship songs. It truly makes me happy that we get to let them know they’re not alone and there can be a better life for them out there.
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why? I would have to say my family. My family has made me feel so loved throughout my life growing up. They have taught me to be the person I am today. I feel like I could definitely talk about them forever, as there are so many memories even though a lot of them have had their downs, we were all still together and fought through it with love.
