Mary Gradt – Texas

Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: “Career ending injury” echoed in her head as the tears began to fall.
Mary was competing at a Regional Powerlifting meet when she just finished the perfect squat, 250 lbs, and setting a personal record, but an accident occurred that left her with a humorous snapped in two. Five days of bone on bone grinding before a ten hole plate and nine screws would begin the 12 week healing process. Throughout the three month recovery, Mary inspired others to stay positive and joyful during hard times! She never gave up, she kept smiling and remained hopeful.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
What inspired you to want to start powerlifting? Are there any athletes you look up to? Why?
Throughout high school, I was involved in many clubs. Staying busy with homework, meetings and practices was something I really enjoyed! I was always looking for something new to be a part of. One of my teachers during my junior year was going to be the new coach for powerlifting and told me that I needed to come to a practice and try it out. This was just the push I needed to get myself out of my comfort zone to check it out. I went to the early morning practice and instantly fell in love with lifting. I might have not been the best at the beginning, but I was constantly wanting to get better and push myself. Someone that I look up to is Claire Thomas. She is a fitness trainer and a 1st Phorm Elite Athlete. One thing that she does that I admire is her positive attitude and willingness to help others achieve their goals. Following her on social media has helped me with my fitness journey and finding who I want to be!

Tell me more about powerlifting and all that you do to practice and at competitions!
Powerlifting is a sport that focuses on the strength of an athlete. We get three attempts at each lift (squat, bench press, deadlift) to max out our weight. It takes just as much physical strength as it does mental. At my school, we practiced three times a week, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning at 6:30! We focused on different muscle groups each practice. I would also workout on my own to get stronger and build my endurance. On meet days, we woke up VERY early! We typically met at the school before 5:30 a.m. to get all of our wraps, squat suits and bench shirts, then ride the bus to our meet destination. Once we got to the high school we were competing at, we would weigh in! Afterwards, we get dressed to warm up and before you know it, it’s time to lift! First up is squat! You lift three times and with each lift you’ll increase the weight on the bar. The same thing for bench press and deadlift. My favorite thing to compete in is deadlift! It is the least stressful for me because it’s the last lift of the day and it is what I’m the best at doing! When we finish lifting, we wait for awards and head back home! Meet days can be hectic, but I always have a blast! It’s the best way to bond with your coaches and teammates.

What was going through your head when you found out about your injury and knew how long the recovery process would be?
Initially I was in pure shock! When it happened, I could not believe it at first. I thought I had just dislocated my elbow, so I was ready to pop it back in and finish lifting. I had a state title on the line, so I wasn’t going to let anything stop me. Until all I could feel in my left arm was pain. We saw the athletic trainer at the powerlifting meet, who told my mom that we needed to get to the hospital now!! Everything seemed like a blur for me, I had never experienced pain like this before. After a few hectic hours consisting of x-rays, medicine, IVs, bloodwork, many nurses coming in and out, it finally hit me when one doctor came in and took one look at my arm and told me that “this is an athletic career ending injury”. I just started bawling. I am an eighteen year old with big plans to cheer in college and be part of the NCA staff, I was supposed to lift at regionals and move onto state... my world was collapsing all around me. God really had His own plans for me though. I knew that I needed to trust in Him and His greater plan. He led us to my amazing doctor, Field Scovell III at the Carrell Clinic, who reassured me that I will be able to lift and cheer again, it was just going to take time. I had three months of recovery for my arm to properly heal.

How did you push through not being able to compete for 3 months?
Three months seems like forever when you’re so used to training and working out everyday. I had no clue how I was going to live this new temporary lifestyle for the next twelve weeks. Around the same time I had my accident, the numbers of the coronavirus began to rise. This caused us to go into quarantine and for everyone’s spring break to be extended, until school was cancelled for the rest of the year. As unfortunate as it is that I had to go through the things I did, I was able to grow deeper in my relationship with God. These three months of healing allowed me to get stronger in my arm and in my faith. Many things were being cancelled due to COVID 19, including state for powerlifting. I felt terrible for all of the girls that worked so hard to make it there, but it was a way that God showed me that all of these events in our lives are really not that important in the end. What is important is that we take our hardships and use it to further the kingdom of God!

Have you won any awards from powerlifting? Do you hope to still compete in the future even throughout college?
Through powerlifting, I have been able to receive medals for every meet I finished in fifth place or better! This season I was sitting in fifth place for my weight class in my region. I worked really hard to make it to regionals with hopes to advance to state! I am not planning on competing in college, but I will be cheering at my university this fall. I could see myself lifting in the future for contest purposes, but as of right now I am just doing it for fun and to keep my physique.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The best advice I could give anyone would be to always look on the brighter side of things! Find joy in your life and radiate positivity. You never know what someone might be going through and with everybody that you encounter, you have the opportunity to be the light and share a smile with them.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In the next five years, I could see myself graduated from college with my B.S. in psychology and working on my masters degree at Dallas Baptist University!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I am a cheerleader! I will be cheering in college, so something that I love to do is tumble and jump. I am always working hard to improve my skills.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Something about myself that I find inspiring is my testimony. I have gone through many things in my life that have left me broken, but I have used all of the hardships I’ve gone through to make me stronger and happier. God has used me to be a light to others and radiate His great love.  I am a more joyful person now than I ever have been because of what I’ve gone through.

Tell me more about how you got involved with cheer and tennis!
I’ve been cheering since age 6. I began with competitive all star cheer which continued through fifth grade. By 6th grade, I was ready for school sideline and competition cheer. I have been a cheerleader ever since. My high school team placed second in the nation at the 2020 UCA Cheerleading National Championship. It was a dream competition season for Niceville Cheerleading. I felt honored to be a part of it.

My love of tennis began at a very young age. My parents both play tennis so they passed on their love for the sport to my younger brother and I. I began lessons at age 6. I trained during the elementary years to play on the middle school team all three years and then on to play for the high school varsity team all four years. It is a great honor for me to play on the Niceville High School team. Niceville Tennis has quite the reputation for excellence. I am proud to be a part of the program. Before Covid hit this year, we were on our way to a dream tennis season. We were undefeated and had broken several district records. It all came to an abrupt halt. We did not return to school after spring break so like many schools all over the country, spring sports were cancelled. It was disappointing but if anything we are stronger for it.

Photography by Erin Hansen Photography

What do you love about playing those two sports?
As a cheerleader, I love that I can help be an ambassador in the community for the school I love. We hold clinics for younger girls interested in cheer. We also serve in the community at various charity and local events. Representing my school is an honor. I also love being on the sidelines cheering for my favorite team the EAGLES! There is an excitement in the stadium on game day, the energy of the crowd, the amazing Eagle Pride Band and the superior athletes who perform each week are just a few of the many parts that make cheering such an incredible experience. There is just nothing like Friday Night Lights in Niceville!
As a tennis player, the best part about tennis is being part of a team. Being gracious under pressure, maintaining concentration, being disciplined to train hard and learning from your mistakes are the biggest lessons I will always hold dear from the game of tennis. My best friend Callie and I are doubles partners. We rely on each other to make points happen. We fight for the point together. I’m lucky to have been able to play with her all these years of team tennis. Playing the game I love with my best friend is incredible. Tennis is also a game you keep forever. Once you know how to play, you can keep on playing.

Tell me more about your music! How long have you been playing and why do you like playing so much?
Piano has been a part of my life since the age of 6 and I have been taking lessons ever since. There is nothing quite like the feeling of bringing a song to life on the piano keys. The time and effort necessary is all worth it once a song is perfected. I love sharing the gift of music with others, as music has the capacity to lift spirits, invite peace, share love, bring joy, and change lives.

What different volunteer projects have you been a part of and which has been your favorite so far?

As a member of the Student Ministry of Crosspoint Church I have been able to serve my community in many ways. Each year the church hosts what is called “Mission Northwest.” We leave our families for a week to go out in our local community and help those in need. Some of the projects have included: demolition and rebuild of a women’s and children’s shelter, hosting a prom for special needs students, building a new playground in a local neighborhood, serving as mentors to foster teenagers, working at our church Bargain Box organizing donated items clothes, toys, etc. The first year I participated in Mission Northwest, my group was involved in a project titled CALM House construction. The house was going to be a shelter for single mothers and their children. Even though we had to get our hands dirty, from taking out insulation, to painting, removing carpet, laying new flooring and more...it was all worth it, just to know what special moments those buildings would hold in the near future. To be a small part of the beginning of the CALM House journey, is something I will never forget, as this would go on to show light to many in need of love and support. I also served as a mentor to foster care teens. My week with these young women was truly a blessing to me. I got to listen to them, serve as a confidant, encourage them, and just spend quality time getting to know them. We did art projects, took them for a little pampering session, went canoeing together and for a few moments reminded each of them what it was like to just enjoy life. I was honored to have been asked to be part of this ministry.

Tell me more about "Supper on Saturday" what is this organization? How did you get involved and what do you do with them?
“Supper on Saturday” is an outreach program put together by Crosspoint Church in Niceville. I actually got involved through the Key Club at Niceville High School, which is a service based organization. Volunteers get together to prepare and deliver meals to families and to elderly in need in our community. It is so heart warming to be a part of bringing joy to others. Seeing the smile on people’s faces and knowing that I had a small part in making their day a little brighter is a feeling like no other. It’s the simple things like providing a few encouraging words for them, or sharing a warm smile, that make the biggest difference. I would love to see more communities take on a project to serve people in need. I promise, the good will escalate.

How do you stay balanced between sports, clubs and volunteering while maintaining a 4.6!

I make mental checklists almost every day of the tasks that I need to complete. I’ll often bring these to existence on a notecard, and I make sure I put it in a place where I constantly see it, like my desk. No matter what the task is, I try my best to be 100% present and devote my full attention to it. I find that that is when I get my best work done, when I focus on the task at hand, rather than worrying about the other tasks I need to do.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Set high standards for yourself. Know that the small decisions you make every day to work hard, be kind, and be involved, are worth the investment because they will set you up for success. Failure isn’t something to fear. It gives us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and become stronger than ever. Be faithful and thankful in all circumstances. Look for the good, even if it’s hard to find.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I would love to be finishing my first year of medical school. I’m interested in being a scientist. I would love for something I do or create to help someone else.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I have several. I love to read! I enjoy spending time with the people I love, walks on the beach, 80’s music, playing with my two goldendoodles Brody and Wrigley, sunsets, and creating personalized greeting cards for all the special people in my life.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Erin Napier inspiring. She and her husband Ben are the host of HGTV’s Hometown. On TV, Erin shows such intentionality and kindness to everyone she meets. She makes a personal home painting for each family that moves in to their new home, which I believe is so thoughtful, and makes her show a little different. I feel that if I were to meet Erin in person, she would show me the same qualities of intentionality and kindness that she does on the show. Her genuineness is inspiring to me, because although she is on television, she carries herself just as she would away from the camera.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Well no matter what, I am always positive. I find the good in everyone and everything around me. I work hard and do my best on everything I am part of. I share kindness and respect with everyone around me.

I have always loved anything STEM related. I felt like joining the STEM club would give me the opportunity to excel in the technology field of study.

Balancing the clubs and school is challenging I make myself a schedule and budget out my time accordingly.

What is it like working for the Bacon County Board of Education IT department?
I absolute LOVE my job!! I get to work at all 4 schools. Daily I could do anything from replacing a keyboard on a Chromebook, hooking up computers or G2 boards for teachers to running internet cables in the ceilings of the school.

TSA stand for Technology Student Association. In this club I work with the advisor to live stream our local high school athletic games/matches (when I am not participating) for people to watch who can not attend. We also compete each year in Athens, Ga in a technology competition.

My future goal will include some sort of extra schooling. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give someone who wants to be where I am today is to set your goals, work hard and never give up. It is not going to be easy, but if you want something bad enough you will do whatever it takes to achieve it!!

What do you love most about cheer and being an Allstar cheerleader for 15 years?
The thing I love most about cheer is the passion that grows on you throughout the years. Cheer has taught me many life lessons and has shown me how to cope with things in real life. The friendships I have made along the way are the people that I know will stick by me on my best and worst days. I also love seeing younger athletes grow into the athlete I am today.

How has your passion for cheer impacted your life and how you spend your time?
My passion for cheer has impacted my life by never giving up on myself because hard work pays off in the end. In my eyes working to better myself and cheer is my priority. Any spare time I have is most likely on the cheer mat and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Strenuous hours of practice, competition and camps have ruined plans for me, but my goal is to be the best I can be.

Picture
Photography by Mallory Neil Photography
Tell me about the different accomplishments you have made through cheer and what was one of your favorite moments being part of it?
My dream has always been to be on the best team possible. I have accomplished this goal by being on Level 5 team for 2020-2021 season. In the past years I have won many National Champion titles, At Large Bids and PAID bids to the D2 Summit, Grand Champions, Specialty Awards, Leaderboard Rankings and was personally awarded Athlete of the Month and Best Role Model.

How are you also involved in your academics at school and how have you been able to manage your schoolwork while being so involved with cheer?
I am very involved in academics at school because I am a go – getter. I like to not only achieve my goals, but I do the best I can with them. Managing schoolwork and cheer have been challenging through the years, but schoolwork always comes first. Long nights after cheer practice consists of doing homework on my hour drive to the gym, staying up past midnight to finish projects, studying with friends in the car and taking extra work with me to competitions to finish for the days I miss.

Picture
Photography by Mallory Neil Photography
In what ways can your lifestyle towards dedicating your time to cheer and school inspire other teens to do the same with their passions?
I am dedicated, responsible and motivated to reach goals in life. I have put a lot of hard work into cheer and school to fulfill my dreams. I think it is important to have structure in your life also to achieve great things. I am coaching 3 teams at my gym (XTREME ALLSTARS) this year so I can enjoy the journey with the younger athletes to fulfill their dreams like I was given the chance to fulfill mine. DON’T EVER GIVE UP

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever accomplished was telling myself to never give up after hard times. My Nannie passed away in 2018 we were inseparable. After I lost her, I never thought I could teach myself to keep moving in cheer and school. So, to this day I go through rough times where I doubt myself, but I always remember she would tell me to keep going. I look back on pictures of her and know how proud of me she was because of all my accomplishments.
Picture
Photography by Mallory Neil Photography
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Believe in yourself and don’t worry about what others say. My favorite quote has helped me reach all my goals “there will always be obstacles, there will always be doubters, there will always be mistakes, but with hard work there are no limits”. More advice I would give to someone to be where I am today would be that if you feel you have reached your limit keep trying you can always do better.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your future plans? In 5 years, I see myself in college studying to become a Physicians Assistant. This has been a dream of mine for many years. I would also like to specialize in Pulmonology. My plans consist of becoming a PA, getting married, having children (that will cheer obviously) and living a happy life.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activities are tumbling with friends, traveling, and riding jet skis at Raystown Lake. During the school year I enjoy volunteering at Mt Lion Backpack Program at my school. It is a program where we pack backpacks full of food for kids from my school that are less fortunate, and I enjoy spending time with classmates helping other kids in our school.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I could present any topic to my peers, it would be about how cheer has not only taught me skills, but it has also taught me life lessons I will cherish forever.

My Bucket List: I have many things on my bucket list, but these are most important. I want to make a change in peoples lives when I become a PA, I want to win D2 Summit and I want to go sky diving.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my Mom inspiring in many ways. My parents got divorced when I was 4 and I couldn’t imagine being a single Mom. My Mom inspires me every day because she never misses a moment in my life. She is always there to help and support people when they need it the most. She doesn’t give up on herself or others. When I am older, I will strive to be like my Mom because she is dedicated and focused on what she wants most in her life. She is my #1 supporter and has NEVER missed a single cheer competition or school activity.

Picture
Photography by Brandi Galentine
What about you inspires others/ why do you think your inspiring?
I have always been told that I m an inspiration to many younger athletes around me. To me this means so much because I want to be a part of their growth in the cheerleading world. I feel as though I am inspiring because I rise above my limits. I always act as a role model for others and show people how much their value is worth. I also think I am inspiring because I strive for perfection in everything that I do. If I struggle with something in life, I will work 100% harder to reach that goal.

Anything else you would like to tell us?
I am so excited to be a part of Inspiring Teen Magazine and I can’t wait to show the world how you can change someone’s perspective on anything. I am so excited to explain to others about my life and how I became who I am today. Always believe in yourself and you will be unstoppable!

What was it like being a competition cheerleader for 7 years? What are some of your favorite memories from it?
It was hard at some times because they would push you to your limits but my favorite memories from it would have to be spending time with all of my friends that I made. And all the fun trips that we had going to competition and having to stay in hotels.

With taking extra credits to finish high school early on top of working how do you stay balanced?
I have my planner that has everything in it that I need to do every day and I check that all the time. If I didn’t have that I would not remember anything that I had to do.

What inspired you to get into dance? Are there any dancers that you look up to?
When I was little my mom put me in soccer, and I would wear a tutu and twirl in the goal. I think my mom was inspired to put me in dance because I was doing it everywhere I went. I have always looked up to my older sister, Maggie, who dances, and my dance teacher, Courtney, she is amazing and so talented. She has been teaching me since I was six, and I’ve looked up to her since.

What do you love most about getting to dance at Shine Bright Dance Studio? Tell me more about them!
The studio is like an extended family to me, and a second home. I have been dancing there since it opened in 2013. This studio was opened by Robin Parfitt in honor of her daughter Nicole, who passed away in an accident. Every day we dance in her honor, I feel a sense of pride every time I walk through those doors because I am a part of something so beautiful and powerful.

What type of dance and what performance has been your favorite?
My favorite style of dance is 100% jazz!! If I am being honest, my favorite performance would be my group jazz dance from fourth grade, it was first time our group won first place at a national dance competition! It was then that I truly realized hard work does pay off.

What is it like volunteering at the dance studio? What types of activities do you do and help with?
I love volunteering at the studio. I appreciate that the teachers trust me enough to work with them. I love watching young dancers find their passion like I once did. We stretch together and I help them learn their recital dances. When they are really little and miss their mom, I try to remind them how much fun they’re having in dance class.

What are some of your future goals? Do you want to teach dance someday or dance professionally?
I would love to dance in college and go on to dance professionally! However, ever since I was little, I always said I couldn’t wait to be a dance teacher at Shine Bright Dance Studio.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished and how did you do it?
Right now, I’m working on the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m working on including tumbling in my dances, I’ve been taking lessons, tumbling doesn’t come easily to me, it’s really hard to get past all my fears, but a lot of hard work and practice have gotten me quite far.

Picture
Photography by J Fuller Photos

What advice would you give someone that wants to be where you are today?
Work hard, don’t let your passion die, always give 110%, and always have self-confidence!!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/ what are your plans for the future?
In five years I will be graduating high school. I hope I will be finishing my senior year on my high school dance team and going into college for dance. I just truly hope that I will still be dancing in five years. I cannot imagine life without it!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I am kind of a one trick pony. All my free time is spent dancing! If I do have some down time, I spend it reading and watching Netflix.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I would not say I have a secret talent unless you count keeping my family of six organized and on track as a talent…someone has to do it.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I don’t really have a choice but to be organized. I am one of four girls and we’re all very busy and active. We all have to be in charge of our own schedules. I thrive during a well-planned day.

3 things on your bucket list
I want to travel ~ Greece is #1 on my list. I hope to try out for a college dance team and own a home with a wraparound porch when I’m older.

Who do you find inspiring?
The owner of Shine Bright Dance Studio, Robin Parfitt inspires me most. She survived something so horrible and tragic and manages to not only maintain her daughter’s legacy; she gives other dancers opportunities her daughter never had. She inspires me with her bravery, love, and passion. Oh! I am also inspired by Jennifer Lopez! She’s amazing!

What about you inspires others/ why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I’m inspiring because I work hard in everything I do, from classes at the studio to my schoolwork. I try to push myself and to inspire others to push themselves, because we are all a part of a team, and a team is always stronger together.

Anything else you would like to tell us?
I have 3 sisters, one of which is my identical twin. We may look the same, but we have different passions. My twin sister, Gracie loves playing soccer. My sisters, Maggie, Katie, and Gracie and I all have different personalities, but we all have the same values and work ethic. I love being a part of a big family.

What do you love most about art and how has it impacted who you are and what you like to do?
I grew up around art, mainly from my mother. I was self-taught. Art was a continuous “outlet” for me, even when I was younger. It helps me to express myself, grow, and keep a peaceful mindset. There’s nothing more I enjoy than starting a new project and being able to present it to an audience. I take part in various contests locally. If I were to describe my “art style,” I would say its anonymous! You will never know what I come up with, but I make sure there is always meanings to my pieces.

What is one of your favorite pieces of artwork you have done? We would love for you to supply a picture of it!
One of my most successful pieces is a stippled drawing of actor, Johnny Depp, inspired from his role in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” I choose this piece because it displays one of my most concentrated concepts—emotion! It won “Best Crowd Pleaser,” displayed under the name, “Sparrow” in 2019.

Tell me a little bit about the unique style of clothes you enjoy wearing and what you would describe your fashion sense to be like.
Shopping is definitely a big hobby of mine, as well as a favorite activity I like to do with my friends! My fashion sense is inspired by latest/vintage trends-stretching from 1980s retro all the way to 2002 bell bottoms and crop tops! I can wear sweatpants but make it fancy if the occasion calls for it. Miss matches, funky colors, or over sized pieces... it all comes together when you work the confidence!! fashion is one of the many ways I can tell you WHO I am.

What are your plans for the future, and what do you hope to accomplish in life?
My plan is to go into the medical field when I hit college. I want to attend West Virginia University in Morgantown. I’d like to be a Dentist, advertising a great attitude and an even bigger smile! I hope to be a part of something great when I older.

Picture

How would you describe yourself and who you are as a person?
I’m extremely spunky and warm-hearted. I’m a girl who really enjoys making her friends laugh and spending moments with anyone wholesomely. I’m independent. You can depend on me and I’ll always give more than my 100%. Effort is a big key for me. I’ll always try something different than before—it’s good that I like surprises.

As an inspiration to others, how can your bubbly personality and positive outlook on life inspire other teens to make friends with new people and branch out like you have?
My message is simple. Be open minded. If you can do that, there will always be a door of possibilities, so take them! If there’s anything I’ve learned about myself, it’s to be more relaxed. We have our whole lives ahead of us, be excited and hopeful. Instead of stressing the future, think about what you can do and how you’ll achieve yourself. Keep your TRUE friends close.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I’m not afraid to be a little awkward, and I’m not afraid to be myself. I laugh loud, and smile BIG, but I think that’s what people enjoy the most.

Kylie Halsey - Ohio
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Jessica Halsey
Photography by 12.9 Photography
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kylie Halsey is an amazing young woman. Not only is she an honor roll and National JR Honor society she also is in the buddy program which helps the special needs students feel part of something. She also does school plays and cheers on the high school team. On top on all of that she is an all-star Hip hop dancer at Fully Loaded Dance Studio, and she volunteers to help a special needs hip hop team. She is just amazing and loves everyone and everything!!

Picture
Photography by Maria

What inspired passion for volunteering to help those who have special needs?
My mom had a big impact when it comes to my passion for helping individuals with special needs. She has always worked with individuals who have disabilities and so I have always been around it. I was just naturally drawn to the overall happiness and joy that comes from them and would not change a thing.

Tell me a little bit about the buddy program you are a part of that helps those with special needs feel included and welcomed at your school.
The buddy program is a program in which other high school and junior high students spend time with those with special needs. The program gives them friends outside of their classroom that they can say hi to in the hallway when leaving. It is amazing the effect they can have on you. We have parties like fake sleepovers and other things that they might not be able to have or get invited to due to the disability they have. It gives them a chance to have a sense of a normal high school experience.

Picture
Photography by Dan Shallenberger

How has your dedication to school also led you to be on honor roll and a part of the National Junior Honor Society?
I believe that without education, hard work, and dedication it is hard to make it anywhere. I want to go far in life, and I know college is the first step to being successful in your field. In my eyes, education comes above all other activities.

What has been one of your favorite memories through being on the cheerleading team at your school, while also being involved school plays?
I think my one of my favorite memories from doing both is when my whole cheer team came to support me in our school’s production of Annie. I think it is so cool how I can do both and everyone is just so accepting of it.

How can you inspire other teens to be active in their communities while also volunteering to include others, just like you have?
If you take anything from me, I want it to be that the most important thing in a person should be the character of the person. No matter how little or much you have personally just remember there is always someone who is struggling more, and you should want to help. It never hurts to just be kind and lend a hand when you can.

Allyson Melgar – California
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by
Launa Penza Photography
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Allyson Melgar started playing softball at the age of 6. At the age of 13 she was diagnosed with scoliosis and had spinal fusion surgery. She returned to softball 3 months later and went on to lead her team to the CIF-SS Championship her freshman year. Ally graduated high school 2020 with honors, is a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation, volunteered at the local hospitals, homeless shelters, and an orphanage in Mexico. Ally served on her high school's Associated Student Body where she organized school events. Ally will be attending College of Staten Island in the fall where she was awarded a softball scholarship.

Photography by Launa Penza Photography

What do you love most about playing softball since you were six years old, and what memorable accomplishments have you made through it?
The thing I love most about softball is when your team is down, the bases are loaded with two outs, and you’re up to bat. At this point you know that there are so many people depending on you to do what you have spent most of your life doing. That adrenaline rush and the dependence of your team is something to live for. One of my all-time favorite memories is being able to play at Deanna Manning Stadium where I was able to win my first CIF title as a freshman.

What was your journey like taking time apart from softball due to being diagnosed with scoliosis and having surgeries for it? How did you recover back into softball afterwards?
At 13 I was diagnosed with scoliosis and needed to have surgery. This obviously meant that I was not allowed to play softball for a while. And when you have done something almost every day for all your life, it’s not easy to go without it. But recovery was harder than I originally thought it would be. I had to change everything about the way I lived. I initially had to have help getting out of bed and walking. Then when I returned to softball just 3 months after surgery, there was a lot of pain and adjustment to get through to get back to being able to play.

Tell me about your volunteer work experience at an orphanage in Mexico, and how it was life changing for you.
Volunteering at Mefi-Boset, an orphanage in Mexicali, MX was one of the most life changing experiences of my life. This was mostly because I was able to meet one of the most amazing little girls named Layla. She changed the way I looked at everything because no matter the hardships she faced she always seemed to be so happy and lit up everything around her. I spent a week there where I was able to interact with the kids, teach them new things and just spend some one-on-one time with them, something they rarely get.

What has it been like enduring COVID-19 through your senior year of high school, and how have you handled it?
Having to endure a global pandemic during my senior year of high school wasn’t the best thing I’ve experienced throughout my life but was the most unique. I went through the five stages of grief, where I convinced myself everyone would still get their last pep rally, prom, senior sunset, etc. Then I began getting upset when quarantine continued to get extended, I hoped that if I would just completely isolate myself for two weeks everything would go back to normal. I got really sad after I realized a lot of the things us seniors worked so hard for, probably weren't going to happen and then finally accepting and embracing everything that is going on.

Picture
Photography by Launa Penza Photography

What plans do you have for your future through softball and your passion for helping others?
I am hoping that softball will help me pay for my schooling, in turn allowing me to get my Bachelors degree and hopefully my Masters. I would love for my softball background to allow me to work camps with children that want to learn.

How can all the challenges and experiences you have been through, inspire other teens to focus on the positive and give back to those who need it most?
A lot of the things I went through at a young age and even some of the things I am experiencing now, allow me see that there is always a silver lining. You just have to choose to focus on the glimmer of light when looking into the darkness. There are so many people that are in worse situations than you are right now, and just know that you will always push through the rough patches. And, by volunteering to help others in need, in turn makes you feel good and positive about yourself.

Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kat inspires others by her kindness, determination, and hard work. She aspires to help others see their beauty and worth. Kat loves animals and volunteers her time at the local animal shelter. She shows that ADHD is not a dis-ability, rather, ADHD gives strength through passion, creativity, and humility. Kat requests donations in lieu of gifts for her birthday for the local homeless shelter. She has worked through many challenges to rise within the pre-professional program at a renowned ballet school. Kat intends to own a farm for abandoned animals while working as a veterinarian and ballet instructor.

What do you love so much about volunteering at your local animal shelter? What does the volunteering entail?
I love learning about the different types of diseases and behaviors because I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up. As a cat lover, I especially love being able to snuggle all the cats and kittens. Volunteering at the animal shelter is so special to me because I can help make a better, cleaner and more efficient place for the animals needing rescue.

When did you start dancing and what inspired you to start?
I started dancing at age 4. My earliest memory of wanting to dance comes from watching Angelina Ballerina, an adorable cartoon about a sweet little mouse ballerina. I started traditional and solid ballet training at age 5. That year, I got to watch, and perform in, my first full ballet as am angel and I immediately fell in love! Ever since my first ballet, dance has been a part of who I am.

Picture
Photography by Jaze Companies

What is your favorite type of dance and what is one of your favorite memories you have made dancing?
Surprisingly my favorite type of dance is musical theater dance and contemporary. I love contemporary because you can really express your feelings. The freedom I feel when dancing contemporary is so amazing. Musical Theatre is fun and so energetic.

What is life with ADHD like? What challenges do you face and how do you push through them?
Life with ADHD is very different from any "normal" life because I have to focus more and use my brain power way more than most people. On a typical dance day I arrive in the studio feeling great and ready to dance. As part of my ADHD, I forget things often. When learning a combination, I frequently forget some of the steps. When my dance teacher corrects me and I hear my classmates sigh and feel their eyes judging me it makes me feel horrible. I cope with this plus my anxiety by spending time with friends and doing my favorite things like swimming. Though it’s very hard to push through these challenges I still try my best and accept I will have to work harder than many others. Finally, I pray and snuggle with my cat because you can’t cure ADHD. It’s part of me.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Never give up. Block out the haters. And trust God.

What goals do you have for your future? Tell me all about them!
My main goal right now for dance is to perform a contemporary solo for YAGP. Also, to perform the Snow role in Nutcracker. I also want to encourage other dancers, and just anyone, that having a disability should never stop you from working toward your dreams. Be fierce, focused, and friendly. You got this!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Still in dance and hopefully a successful dancer and hopefully working to study to be a veterinarian.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Drawing and snuggling with my cat.

Picture
Photography by Jaze Companies

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can sing and am in choir at my school.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I try and do one thing at a time and keep a routine so I don’t get mixed up.

3 Things on your bucket list
Hang with friends. Snuggle with cat. And go to an amusement park with my friends.

Who do you find inspiring?
Lindsey Sterling

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
My ADHD and how I push past it to work toward my dreams. I hope others with challenges see me working hard and reaching my goals. I hope this inspires them.

What do you love most about cheerleading and cheering all four years of high school?
My favorite thing about being in competitive cheer was competing and traveling to different places for competitions. I always got really excited during warmups and loved the feeling after hitting a perfect 0 deduction routine. Since I have been on my high school cheer team for 4 years, the girls have become my best friends and I love being able to work with them at practices and different events.

What has been one of your most memorable experiences through cheerleading and tumbling?
One of my most memorable moments during tumbling was when I first landed a full and a double. Those two skills were very big accomplishments for me, I worked really hard and put in a lot of time learning them, so when I first landed both of them it was a great feeling!

How have you dedicated your time to cheerleading for the future, including being a part of tumbling classes to prepare for college tryouts?

During the week I take 2 one hour tumbling classes at a gym called Tumble Progression to keep up with my skills and learn new things to prepare for college cheerleading tryouts. I also make sure to do different workouts like running to continue to stay in shape and keep up my endurance.

Tell me about your other passion for wake boarding and how it has led you to work at your local cable park.
I used to do week long wake boarding camps when I was little and immediately loved it. A couple years later I applied for the job at Hydrous which led me to wakeboard a lot more and learn a bunch of new tricks. This year I competed in a competition called Points Chase and ended up getting 2nd place in one of the women's divisions.

What other extracurricular activities are you involved in?
My cousins love to play guitar and ukulele so they were able to teach me some of what they know. This made me decide to take guitar lessons during the summer which I learned a lot from and was able to be self-taught on the ukulele.
My mom is pretty fluent in German, so I decided to take that language in high school. I loved my teacher and how cool the language was, so I wanted to stay in the class for all four years of high school.

How can you inspire other teens to pursue their passions, and stay active in what they love to do like you have in your life?
I want to be able to motivate other people to stay involved in as many things as they can and remind them that the feeling you get when you accomplish something that you've worked really hard on is very rewarding.

Cierra Reynolds – North Carolina
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by
Marcella Colette Photography
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Cierra Reynolds is an inspiring teen because of her Faith, her trust in God, her family and her leadership roles in the community. Cierra is a youth worship leader at her church and Senior Mentor in many community organizations. She gets to experience, full circle, the impact that she makes on those around her. Cierra strives to be the best leader and allows her life experiences and inspirations to push her to do her very best and reach her ultimate goal in life, which is to be the voice for all youth and have a positive impact on all.

What I enjoy most about serving others through my faith is the positive impact I see on their lives. Increasing their faith through my worship really does make me and others stronger believers in Christ. My faith in God has impacted my life, not only spiritually but mentally. The way I think, the way I move, my growth as a person. Having faith means to have complete trust in someone or something, and I believe when you have complete trust you have no other worries in life.

My role as a Youth Worship Leader, at The Park Church in Charlotte, NC. I am a part of the Judah Choir; we serve every second Sunday and we also serve at other churches youth events. I lead worship to the entire congregation. I’ve been singing in the Judah Choir since I was 4 years old, then got the opportunity to sing with the adult praise team at the age of 10, and ever since then I’ve been full-time leading worship on second Sundays. I really enjoy serving in this ministry because singing is my form of worship. Senior Mentor in my community, I am a senior mentor for an organization called The Sandbox, my role and the mission for the organization, is when a child is diagnosed with cancer, life-altering, or terminal illness, we help the people in our community to meet the practical, and emotional needs of families at the time of diagnosis or referral. We create opportunities for families that encourage friendships, create lasting memories, produce joyful experiences and most importantly, restore hope. I am also Drama Club Co-President at Mallard Creek High School.

Serving and Volunteering to help others has become a passion of mine ever since elementary school. I went to a Montessori School, and the main teaching “principal” was to always volunteer within your community. I would always be the student who stayed after school, helped during my lunch, and even came to volunteer with gardening or any school events. And, not knowing this then, I know now how that prepared me for all the work and service I do now. I really enjoy helping others & giving back. Knowing that I can do something in this world, whether that’s in my church serving or volunteering in school. It makes me a better person every day, I really give all thanks to God and my Mom, Rachel Reynolds, for supporting me in all that I do.

I’ve always been the athletic child and came from a very athletic household. I played basketball, cheerleading, soccer, dance/gymnastics, and tennis. All starting at the age of 4. My love for tennis began when I went to a tennis camp at a local rec center and then going into high school, I knew I wanted to play a sport, sophomore year I tried out for the tennis team and made it.
My faith has completely impacted how I serve and who I am as a person. I live everyday having complete trust in God, and when I’m serving, as a youth worship leader, I really get to be free in that space. As a person, growth and positivity runs through my veins. It really is decreasing me, Increasing God. Living life and loving without limits.

One way I can encourage other teens to give back to their communities and make a difference in their environments, just like I have, is by using my voice and my platform. Many teens want to make a difference in this world and in their communities but may not know how. Telling teens that at first, it’s okay not to know, but try new things so you know what you want to do. Whatever it is that they are good at, their communities need. Have Dreams, Always Love, Grow in Faith.

What inspired you to start wrestling?

I spent my days watching my brother wrestle. I grew to love the sport. I did a year of wrestling when I was younger but decided to dance. Later, I chose to leave years of competitive dance and give wrestling another try. So, I guess my brother is who inspired me.

What was it like competing at state?
EMOTIONAL, you have so many feelings going through your mind. I was the only girl, representing my team, so I felt a lot of pressure. This is a 2-person competition, and if I mess up it is all on me. I leaned on God to give me peace and ease my mind.
Picture
Photography by Senior Edge Photography

Did you have any idea you would place at state? What was going through your head when you won the last match? What was your teammates and family’s reaction?
I didn’t think I was going to place at the tournament.  I checked the brackets, saw the wins my competitors had, and it was a little intimidating. When I won my last match I thought “Did I really just win this match in 15 seconds?” And then there was the realization I was the only person on my team who placed at state. Everyone was so excited for me and what I had accomplished. It felt good to hear cheering and receive hugs.

What sparked your passion for volunteering? What are some of your favorite volunteer projects you’ve done?
My momma had always told me my love language is Acts of Service. I’ve always found joy in helping others and the way it makes me feel when I’m done. I have volunteered for Backpacks for Breaks, Cordell Christian Home (a nursing home facility), Red Andews, & our local food bank. My absolute favorite time to serve is during Christmas. We volunteer for Red Andrews and serve thousands of families a Christmas meal, give lots of gifts, and host an actual holiday party.

What are some goals that you have for your future? Do you see yourself wrestling in college?
My future goals consist of maintaining straight A’s and work to score an academic scholarship. My plans for now are to go to college, wrestle, and major in law in hopes of becoming an attorney. Of all those plans for my future my biggest one is maintaining a strong relationship with God. I pray that my future, if anything, always has God in the center.

What is your favorite activity or pastime, that wasn’t in your nomination?
There are 2 things that I love & they are fishing and working out at Ignite Fitness Gym.
Picture
Photography by Senior Edge Photography

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
I have a big bucket list, but here are somethings on it.
I want to go to Guatemala and volunteer.
Win 1st place at a State Tournament.
Take a cooking class.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Haha, I’m not too organized. It’s taken a lot of structure and dedication for me to get to where I am today. I have a really busy schedule, so I do a lot of pre-packing, laying out clothes, scheduling, and trusting God to help me! If you ask my friends, they will say I’m a little OCD, but I don’t think I’m too bad.

Caitlyn Vermulm – Montana
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by JMK Photography
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Caitlyn Vermulm is inspiring to me for quite a few reasons! Her incredible smile will light up a room. She has a very friendly and approachable personality. Caitlyn's outlook on life is positive and she has plans and goals of working in the medical field in her future. The most inspirational trait anyone can have, in my opinion, is to be comfortable and happy with who they are, and Caitlyn has this one down!

What inspired you to want to have a future career in the medical field?

I've always been addicted to the sitcom Grey's Anatomy and I know TV is nothing like real life but it truly sparked my interest in the medical field and I've dug further into it ever since.

How did you narrow the medical field down and decide that you wanted to be a registered nurse?
After watching my great grandmother in the hospital for months, I felt the nurses seem to have more constant contact with the patient and can truly connect and provide compassion to both patient and family.

For those who may not know can you tell me more about what specifically a registered nurse does in the medical field?
Registered Nurses are the ones continually monitoring patients including taking vitals, administering medication, providing wound care, and relaying information to the physicians.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I plan to have graduated from Carroll College with my BSN in Nursing and be working as an RN in Kalispell, MT.

Have you gotten to job shadow or intern with any medical professionals?
Yes! Last summer I was able to take part in a MedStart program where we got to do several hands on things like: Intubate a mannequin patient, put an IV in, dissect a pig heart, and we got to deliver a baby with the robotic simulator!! I also got to job shadow with an LPN in a pediatric clinic which is what I would like to specialize in. It was awesome - I loved every minute of it.

How do you stay so motivated and keep that hard-working drive that you have?

I have always wanted to be number one in my class as well as just be the best I can in anything I do. I feel like my parents instilled that in me as a child and I work hard at that daily.

3 Things on your bucket list -
1) Go to Bali
2) Go on a safari in Africa
3) become fluent in sign language

Kylie Cone - Texas

One Eye Shutterfly Photography
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kylie Cone has decided to serve this country in the U.S. Army "Army Strong". She has a bright future and an outstanding amount of strength, mentally and physically. She is an inspiration to many and now a protector to all. Kylie, I am so proud of you. I'm an Administrator at a K-8th Charter School in AZ that Kylie attended when she was younger. I have had the honor of watching Kylie over several years grow into this beautiful young woman. She has been through hard times with family, school, friends, and overall self-growth; and let me tell you she has grown and blossomed into this amazing, confident, kindhearted person you see in this photo.

Picture
Photography by One Eye Shutterfly Photography

Why did you make the amazing decision to join the Army?
I was told that I wouldn't be joining the military and wasn't ever given an explanation as to why, so I decided to show that person that I can, and I did! Besides that, I have always dreamed of one day becoming a soldier serving our great nation. I have seen just how the uniform can transform a woman who might otherwise be shy or timid into a fierce powerful woman!

Who/what motivates and inspires you every day to make the decisions you have made?
My Family! My Friends! The impact I have on my younger siblings. My Dad would always tell me that "they look up to you, you need to show them the right way". Also showing the girls that otherwise may think they can't, that they can!

What is the recruitment process like for the Army? What has it been like for you?
The recruitment process is easy. Just pick the branch that you like the best and talk to a recruiter. The recruiters will guide you through step by step. The test can be difficult if you're not a test savvy person. The test was difficult for me since I had little time to study between work and school. If I could do it over again, I'd try harder by junior year on the asvab and try to get into basic training during the summer of my junior/senior year.

What advice do you have for other teenagers who want to join the Army?
If you have any aspirations of being in the military, don't second guess them. I did, but thankfully my Dad and stepmom kept reminding me that "this is your dream, and if you don't chase it, you'll never forgive yourself". I am so glad that I stuck with it and can now say that I am living at least part of my dream.

What other goals do you have for your future in the Army and outside of it?
I want to be in the medical field. By joining the Army, I will be eligible for a GI Bill for school. Once I get out of the army, I will study for my RN degree.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Telling my parents that I am lesbian. It was a very tough thing to do. It was extremely uncomfortable, but I didn't want to keep it from them anymore. I sat them down and talked to them. Deep down I knew that no matter what, they'd accept me for who I am, but I was still terrified. They were understanding and my dad said he really didn't mind because "you're not allowed to date until you're 30 anyhow".

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Follow your dreams and don't let that stepdad step on your dreams. My Dad always reminds me that I'm the only one that can determine my outcome. Don't let the little things or little people get in your way!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I would have served my active 4 year term in the military, I then plan to go to school to be one an RN or equivalent.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Swimming and other high school sports and of course anything to do with having friends around.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes.. Singing. Maybe someday I'll let the world hear my voice but I'm still practicing alone when no one's around or when I’m in the shower!

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I just try to relax and take it one day at a time. I try to not overload myself too much.

3 Things on your bucket list
Meet Ariana Grande
Travel the world
Actually be able to ride all the rides at a Disney park in one day...

Who do you find inspiring?
My Dad

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I inspire people to Love one another. To be faithful friends. To be kindhearted. To be humble. To be who you are.
I live these values daily and try surrounding myself with others that are the same.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I wouldn't be where I'm at today if it wasn't for the love and support of my Family. I have had a rough childhood being subjected to some harsh environments surrounding my mother's side. Fortunately, my Dad fought and fought and never gave up, he's truly showed me the spirit of a fighter.

Lillee Schaible

Picture

Lillee Schaible - West Virginia
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by LSPhotography
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Lillee Schaible loves to read and is currently writing a book. She has been homeschooled through ABeka Academy online program since age 5 and has made their honor roll for the last two years, she plans on completing all honors courses and working toward the Academic Honors Award given by Abeka at graduation each year. She loves serving in her local church through choir and having fun with her youth group. She inspires with her kindness and her ability to encourage others.

What inspired your love for literature and your dedication to excel in academics?

My love for literature started with reading Nancy Drew books as a child. I absolutely loved reading them, and they sparked my obsession with mystery stories. Then it continued to grow when I read some stories in my literature class. I fell in love with short stories, poetry, and some classical books like Silas Marner, The Scarlett Letter, and Julius Caesar. Some of my favorite authors are Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen Poe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Carolyn Keene, Christy Barritt, and Suzanne Collins. These authors, and many more, have inspired me to pursue my love for classical, and modern reading.
I have always loved school and have enjoyed the privilege of having a Christian education. My education has always been important to me because I believe that the more knowledge we acquire, the better we are equipped to handle what life throws our way. My favorite subjects include, of course, my literature class, history, and science. I have always been a huge lover of history. I have also enjoyed my previous American and world history classes and am looking forward to my American Government class this year.

Tell me a little bit about the book you are writing and what it is about.
The book I’m working on is a crime fiction, romance novel. It is about a young woman named Alissa Wagner whose brother, James was brutally murdered because of his affiliation with Main Stay Company. With the help of FBI agent Chris Justice, Alissa must race to discover the truth concerning James’ murder while a serial killer is hot on her trail. I am anxious to finish, but still have several chapters to go.

Through being homeschooled by ABeka Academy, how have you worked hard to make the honor roll for the past two years while also working towards the Academic Honors Award that is given at graduation? What does the award stand for?
I have worked very hard the past two years to maintain a straight A average and make it on to their honor roll while taking all available honors classes along the way. The Academic Honors Award is received when all the honors courses offered by ABeka Academy have been completed, along with having to graduate with a 4.0 unweighted GPA. As you could imagine, achieving this is not easy, but I plan to try my best to meet these requirements and receive the award at graduation.

In what ways have you also volunteered to help others through being involved in your church and your church’s youth group?
I volunteer to help with my churches children’s ministries, Thanksgiving and Christmas food distributions, our Upward sports ministry, and often help wherever I’m needed. I love singing in the choir, and sometimes my sister and I sing duets. My youth group is one of my favorite things to help out with in my church. We always have such a great time together and are a very tight knit group. I enjoy the fundraisers that I help with most because of the time we get to spend working together to help fund our future events.

How can your dedication to school and kindness by giving back to your community inspire other teens to do the same?
I would say that the thing that could inspire teens most by my dedication and kindness is the end result. If you stay focused on the things that matter like showing kindness and the love of God through giving back to your community, no matter how small the act of kindness may be, you will have a lasting impact on those around you. Also, staying dedicated to your education is so important. I have found that pursuing an education has been something that I wouldn’t trade for anything. It has never been, and will never be easy, but it has definitely been worth every bit of it!

What other activities are you involved in, including archery?
Archery is one of my main passions, though I have never competed. I just love doing it. I honestly don’t do many other activities except for the occasional game of basketball with my youth group.

Kennedy Morrison – Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Shanda Boddie
Photography by Courtney Bliss Photography
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kennedy Morrison is an inspiring young lady because she is very enthusiastic about her passion which is Dance. Once Kennedy goes to college her goal is to be a part of the pom squad, which is where she wants to continue dancing. Currently she has been dancing for over 14 years and has been training for over 40 hours a week nonstop. Kennedy is very passionate about what she loves and finds ways to inspire others and support her teammates by giving her all on and off the stage!
Picture
Photography by Courtney Bliss Photography

What do you love most about dance, and how has it impacted your life in a positive way?

Dance is a way for me to express myself without having to speak my story. When I am on stage, I feel free to let out my emotions that have been bottled up in me. By doing this on stage it has impacted my life for the better and has created an outlet for myself.

Tell me about your plans for college involving dance and your goal to be a part of the pom squad.
In college my plan is to get on the pom/dance team so I am able continue my love for dance and performing. When I graduate from College, I plan on trying out to be a Laker Girl so that it can help me get a head start in my desired job which is, Sports Management. If I were to get an internship, I would be able to get a jumpstart in my career with dance and sports management.
Picture
Photography by Courtney Bliss Photography

How have you committed your time to dance through training for over 40 hours a week nonstop, and how has your commitment helped you improve over the years?
Along with dancing 40+ hours a week I also improved my technique through yoga and pilates training, which gave me the strength and control I needed for dance. My confidence over the years has skyrocketed ever since I was able to join a competitive team on stage which has also strengthened my commitment to dance.

What is one of the most unforgettable experiences you have made through dance?
In 2018 our dance studio won dance Nationals! It was the most rewarding experience ever. We spend our entire season working up to that one event and all the hard work, long dance hours, teamwork and training paid off.

Picture
Photography by Courtney Bliss Photography

How have you become a mentor through your graciousness and leadership skills?
I have always looked up to the older dancers and treated them as my mentors. Once I became that “older dancer” I realized that little kids would be looking up to me and that made me change my whole demeanor and attitude when in dance. Being a mentor/leader does not only mean you have to be a teacher to them, but you are also their friend. You want your words to stick with them and if you have succeeded in that, then you know that you have been a great mentor and leader to that dancer.
Picture
Photography by Courtney Bliss Photography

What advice would you give to other teens to encourage them to pursue their passions in life, just like you have through dance?
When you put your mind to something do not let anything get in the way of that. No matter how impossible you may think pursuing your passion is, just remember that anything is possible as long as you set your mind to it.

Koedi Nealy

7/17/2020

Picture

Koedi Nealy - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Debi Schnider
Photography by Capture It Camera
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Koedi had the vision at age seven of making a difference in the world by using spare change. She related pennies to the overlooked, forgotten, and lost people of the world. She never gave up on her dream, and with much drive and determination, her ministry, Graced, became a non-profit when she was 13 years old. Koedi is now 17 and is very active in her school, church and community. Graced has a team of ambassadors ages 7-27 who work together to help people feel valued. They provide for the community’s homeless population and send underprivileged children to camp. Koedi is an inspiration and she speaks to different organizations about the importance of creating change with change.

Tell me about Graced Ministry, and how you started it.
When I was 7, I noticed people passing up pennies on the street, I noticed people not wanting pennies back for change, and I even witnessed someone throw a few pennies away. I also noticed a homeless community that people passed by as if they didn’t matter. I related the two and decided I would use pennies to show people that we are all of value.

What is the purpose behind Graced Ministry, and what inspired you to start your own ministry at such a young age?
Graced ministry is a non-profit that gives youth of all ages a way to fellowship and serve others and their community. As of now, our ambassadors range from age 7-25 and we currently have 56. We collect pennies and use the money to minister to people living on the streets. Graced also has a program that helps send youth to summer camp.

How have you overcome challenges you’ve faced through having multiple learning disabilities?
I have had great therapist’ to teach me learning/studying habits and strategies. I have learned to set goals and work hard until they are accomplished. I have had to learn that learning looks different for some people and that’s ok. I embrace my learning struggles and don’t look at them as a disability but a difference.

Through the obstacles you’ve faced, how have you persevered through hard work and determination one example including becoming a member of your school’s National Honor Society?
I set achieving National Honor Society on my goal list as a fifth grader. I would study long hours, go to tutoring, work close with teachers, ask for extra credit, and envision me achieving that goal. I reached National Junior Honors Society in 7th grade and worked diligently ever since to keep it.

What advice would you give to other teens to encourage them to stay positive and determined through your own experiences?
I have had peers tease me because of my learning differences in the past as well as mock and ridicule me for my ministry work, but I focused on the enduring words of my family, found adult mentors that I trusted, and tried to stay true to the things I felt like I was created to accomplish.

How has starting your own non-profit organization impacted your life and how you help be there for others?
Starting Graced Ministry has not been easy and was not an overnight success. After 6 years of talking to anyone who would listen and begging my family to help me, my vision became a reality. Watching the Ambassador program grow as youth of all ages unite to make change with change has been one of my greatest accomplishments. I hope I can continue to be someone to encourage others that it doesn’t matter your age or your situation ~ you are of value and can make a positive impact on the world.

The Nomination: Over the past few years I have watched my daughter grow into a very courageous young lady. She has inspired students around her to spread positivity and become involved in random acts of kindness. She is involved with her church as well as getting individuals to join her in that as well. With all the events and incidents happening right now somehow she was able to find a good thing during it all! Her teachers appreciated it a lot and it made a difference in their lives. Her aim is to reach as many teachers as possible. I cannot believe that she put herself out there like that without a second thought just to make someone else happy!

What have you done to help you teachers through the pandemic? How did you get the idea?
I made a video explaining how grateful us students are for them! I was just a little fed up with negative things happening in this world and around me so I decided to do something positive for people that were helping me!

What is your goal for this project? Where do you want it to go?
My goal is to make teachers know that they are appreciated! I would like it to be seen nationwide and reach as many teachers as possible!

What do you love about working with special needs children?
They have taught me to be brave. I love working with these kids because of their courage. These kids are different from others, but they still show up with a smile no matter what. That takes bravery and courage and I look up to those kids!

How long have you been involved with your church and what do you do there?
I have been involved with my church for about 4 years now. I spread the word about joining our youth group and just bring more and more friends.

Being able to be vulnerable in front of people and speaking about the things that make you uncomfortable or scared in front of others.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I have been told many people like how positive I am during tough times and how I take challenges on. I think it’s important to see someone young speak out about things and be vulnerable so that others become more comfortable with doing that and I think I do a pretty good job at that!

How did you find your love for music and what are some of your favorite things about getting to create and perform?
My parents are professional musicians, so I grew up going to their shows and being inspired by them. The sounds of the Beatles and Carole King filled our house, which made me appreciate music and the art of crafting a good song. I love that writing and performing songs is a direct expression of my everyday life. The more experiences I have with people and places, the more songs I write. Part of the ‘job’ is simply living--- and I love that.

How did your band Almost Famous come together and what is it like getting to perform with them?
My band members are from all over the world but go to college in LA, so we met here through the music scene. I love performing with a band because it brings my songs to life. We are a team and music is such a unifying factor.

What is the Dragon Kim Foundation Fellowship and how were you selected? What opportunities did this give you?
The Dragon Kim Foundation grants $5,000 to select high school teams for their own community service projects. We had to submit an essay, transcripts, recommendations from school faculty and officials, do an interview, and present our idea for a community service program. We learn how to run a nonprofit, become better leaders, and how to effectively impact our local communities. Through Dragon Kim, I have made so many connections, and have not only grown our project, but also grown as a human being.

Tell me more about what Fostering the Arts does! How did you get the idea to co-found it?
My project Fostering the Arts brings performing arts classes to children in the L.A. foster care system. My project partner and I go to an Arts high school, in the Musical Theatre conservatory. One day during a rehearsal break, we talked about how grateful we were for these Arts opportunities. We thought it would be great to bring the classes we take to kids in foster care. Since COVID, we have transitioned our program to delivering singing grams to homes, fire stations and other essential worker sites. It has been so rewarding to combine music with giving back to the community.

At California School of the Arts you are involved in so many things inside of school. What are some of these activities and how do you balance everything?
I love and miss CSArts so much! I am in Leadership, president of Beatles Club, National Honors Society, Calif. Scholarship Federation, and the ambassador performing group called Fusion. It’s definitely a lot of work balancing meetings, volunteering and performances, but the key to staying sane has been the friends I’ve made. I look forward to it all, because even though I’m super busy, I’m forming great bonds with people who have the same interests as I do.

What are some goals you have for your future? Where do you want music to take you? Do you want to pursue it professionally?
I want to be a professional singer/songwriter and recording artist. This is my passion--I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’m releasing my EP in the Fall, and just signed a sync deal for TV and film for one of my songs. I would love to tour the world, and get my music out there to the masses. I’m really excited to see where life will take me, for I am in the front seat of this roller coaster.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
When you start to consider a career path in music, ask yourself: Can you imagine doing anything else? Then you will have your answer.

3 Things on your bucket list

Go to Japan and eat authentic sushi and ramen!!!
Go ziplining in a tropical location
Win a Grammy Award for my music

Who do you find inspiring?
Taylor Swift has always inspired me because she’s a successful female singer/songwriter. She built her career from the ground up, is super humble and driven, and doesn’t care what other people think. Whenever I question myself, she reminds me that anything is possible if you persist, constantly work on your craft, and believe in yourself.

Nomination and Photography by David Williams Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ra’von is an inspiring senior for encouraging younger kids to keep working and never giving up on their dreams. Ra'von is 3.8 GPA Honor Student, Class President, FFA members, and CA member. She has played basketball and volleyball all 4 years in high school and has achieved over 2000 points in both sports. Photography by David Williams Photography

What did you love most about playing volleyball and basketball all four years of high school, and what is a memorable experience you had through playing both?

Playing both volleyball and basketball, I had so many exciting times. What I think I loved most about playing both sports is the closeness I had with both my coaches and my teammates. Building a bond with them through a sport was extraordinary. They became more than just a teammate or a coach, they felt like actual family. The most memorable experience I had playing volleyball was playing in the state championship game my freshman year. It was the most unforgettable experience. The most memorable experience I had playing basketball was almost going into the third round in playoffs. We didn’t win but my team and I played so hard and it was fun trying.

Tell me about how active you were involved in your school including being your class president and an FFA member?
I was active in school. I was in many clubs including class committee, FCA, student council, and many sports. I enjoyed being active in school because I knew I can be the difference into making our school better. Being senior class president was a tremendous experience. I wanted the best for my class, and I had to be a great listener and leader to do that. Being a part of FFA was awesome. I learned so much about agricultural that I didn’t know.
Picture
Photography by David Williams Photography

How did you manage being involved in your school in great ways while also maintaining a 3.8 GPA as an Honor student?
The way I managed being active in school and being an honor student was being discipline. I had to be discipline enough to know I was a student first and athlete second. Whatever I had to do academic wise, I made sure I took the time to get it done. After I did that, then I made time to get whatever I had to get done athletic wise.

What or who motivates you in life to continue to achieve your goals, and your plans?
It’s not only one person that motivates me to achieve my goals and future plans, it’s many people. My parents, family, friends, coaches, and teammates are all part of my success. They all support me and motivate me very well to help me achieve my goals and I’m so thankful for them.

Picture
Photography by David Williams Photography

How have you set an example to younger kids through all that you have accomplished, and what does it mean to be a leader to them?
I think I’ve set an example for younger kids through the sports I play. I love going to my old middle school helping at practices and teaching them how to become a better athlete. I also love helping a team camps and encouraging kids to become a better player. It means so much for me to help them and try to make them better in their weakest areas.
Picture
Photography by David Williams Photography

In what ways can you inspire other kids that hard work, determination, and humility all pay off in the long run based on your own experience?
I can inspire kids that hard work, determination, and humility all pays off in the end is to teach them to never quit on something they love and can be successful in. There were so many times I wanted to quit a sport just because it got hard, but I had to learn fight through the tough times. If I would have quit when I wanted to, I wouldn’t have accomplished as much as I have now. I want to inspire kids that quitting when things get hard will only hold them back from their goals.

What challenges have you had to overcome and how have you overcome them?
I always suffered from anxiety and as time went on I gained weight and lost my confidence and had low self-esteem. I felt like the world was against me. That’s when my anxiety went through the roof. Slowly I had to work through my issues one by one to help myself get over this feeling and over my body issues.

I would want them to know I am a very artistic and passionate person.

Shelby Rader - Oklahoma
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Julie Goodroe Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Shelby Rader has been singing since she was 10 years old in church, national anthems at different sporting events, FFA Alumni Camp, OYE and at the Farmer's Bureau Convention. She has been in FFA chorus at State Convention and competed every year in front of thousands in the State FFA Talent Show. She is a member of the worship team at Faith Church where she gets to sing every Sunday to glorify God. She also cheers at Kiefer High School and is part of the FFA there where she has shown pigs for two years and been a member of the Sate FFA Chorus. Shelby also loves theater and acting. She has been an extra in "I Can Only Imagine" and "Treasure Lies". Shelby has always been determined to make her dreams come true of singing professionally with years of working with her vocal coach. Coming from a small town, many have told her she is crazy for even thinking of this dream but she is determined to move those mountains and audition for American Idol, The Voice, and America's Got Talent. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University after she graduates.

What inspired your passion for singing, and what locations have you performed at? Which was the most memorable for you?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have been singing and performing everywhere! Whether it be in the shower or in front of 8,000 people, I am constantly singing and pushing for my dreams to become a reality. I have had many opportunities to sing the National Anthem at places like OYE, Alumni camp, high school sporting events and even at the Farm Bureau Convention. One of my most memorable performances was the first time I performed in the talent show on a stage in front of 8,000 people when I went to my first FFA State Convention. I walked off the stage and told my mom that I wanted to sing professionally some day!

Tell me about your love for public speaking and acting that has led you to perform in musicals growing up, as well as your passion for FFA and being actively involved in your school.
Public speaking was a great resource when it comes to developing my acting skills. Acting has always held a special place in my heart and I have always said that “if I don’t pursue my singing dreams, then I hope to be seen on the big screen someday!” FFA has given me the opportunity to grow as a leader and it has helped open my eyes to all the possibilities of becoming a performer!

What were your experiences like being an extra in two Christian movies, and what was the process like?
The first experience in “I Can Only Imagine,” was by far my favorite! I was in the concert scene and it was filmed in Oklahoma City, OK. We were there for hours, filming the same scene over and over. I loved watching the actors do their part, it was like I had a front row seat. It was so fun going to the movies and watching myself on the big screen. The second movie was a great experience, too! I love acting and being in front of the camera, as you can tell!

How has your faith impacted your passions as well as your life and who you are as a person?
God has truly blessed me with my talents that I withhold today! I truly believe that I can bring people to God through my singing and feel it is my purpose to share the word through my voice. I am part of the worship team at Faith church in Glenpool, OK. I have learned so much about singing with a band and working together and sharing our love for Christ through music. I truly feel like God has blessed me with this voice to share with the world.

What goals do you have for your future whether it be through singing and performing or your plan to attend Oklahoma State University?
I intend to audition for American Idol and America’s Got Talent in the near future! My major may be uncertain but I am looking into Broadcasting or Public Relations. I also would like to minor in Theater so I can get some more experience with that at a higher level.

What advice would you give to teens who are passionate about performing arts to pursue it no matter what others say, just like you have through your story?
I encourage you to follow your dreams and that you listen to Katy Perry’s song “Daisies,” because it relates to all the dreamers in this world. I have had many people tell me that my dreams are impossible and that I will never make it! What they don’t know is they light that fire even more under me and they make me want to move those mountains even more. Never give up, you are going to have people tell you “no,” but keep going until you hear a “yes!” You are a survivor! Keep your head up and keep on working for your dreams and don’t let anything or anyone get in your way!

Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

What aspirations do you have for your life, and what is one thing you are looking forward to in the future?
I have big dreams for my life, as I hope to become a travel nurse to be able to travel and see the world while continuing to work as a nurse. Eventually I hope to settle down and get married and have a family. After I stop taking travel nursing assignments, my plan is to go back to school to get my master's degree in nursing to work as an ER nurse practitioner.

Tell me about your plan to attend Auburn University and what you plan on pursuing.
Auburn University has always been my dream school, so it is so exciting for me to be less than a month out from beginning my childhood dream! I plan to major in Nursing with a minor in Spanish.

How has your faith impacted your life and what you believe in?

The Lord has been so gracious to me during this new season of my life, blessing me with an amazing support group to surround me each and every day. I have been called to become a nurse, as one of my biggest personality traits is compassion. I love lending a helping hand to anyone in need, and what better way to serve His kingdom than to serve people in need!

In what ways are you always looking to strengthen your faith?
I want to continue to strengthen my faith by learning to love more like the Lord each and every day. Working in an environment where you never know the reason someone may be there; I feel like is a great place to make a huge difference in allowing me to share my faith and my story with others.

Picture

What advice would you give to others to encourage them to accomplish their dreams through hard work just like you have continued to in your life?

I would give the advice to trust the Lord and trust the process. I never thought I would be where I am today accomplishing what I am without the Lord. His plan is far greater than I could have ever imagined. It is not always easy, but it is most certainly worth every minute! I have been gifted with some of my most treasured things while in a very difficult season!
do that!

Savahana Scott

Savahana Scott  - Indiana
Interview by Oliva Bush
Nomination by Lori Sutphin
Photography by KelGrand Photography
Issue 35 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Savahana Scott was diagnosed with Cancer when she was 2 years old. She fought that monster for 4.5 years with everything she had! There were times during her illness, her victory seemed to get further and further away, as she had many complications which furthered her treatment protocol. . But she never gave up. Over the years she has worked through and overcome so many obstacles, due to that illness. She plays travel and High School l softball, as a pitcher, she is involved in her school political clubs, she has participated in mentoring incoming students to her school, she works as a lifeguard in our community and often does events, gives speeches and speaks to elementary children about her journey, to raise money for Riley Childrens Hospital, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. Although some days are hard, she continues to give everything 100%, with a smile on her face. She plans to attend college and purse the medical field in pediatrics. She is truly such an inspiring young teen, that has such an impact on the young and old!

What was hard with cancer, and what inspired you to push through the rough times?
Watching other kids do things that I couldn't do, because of my illness. Even at a young age, I remember that making me sad, and knowing that taking my medicine was vital to my recovery. God always has a plan, and I rely on that knowledge to push me to better days.

What piece of advice would you give others to help them do the same as you?
Always believe in yourself, have confidence, and know that today is just a very small steppingstone to a much bigger future.

How do you push through the obstacles that cancer left you with?
I have learned to live with the effects of my illness and recovery over time. Patience and knowing as time passes, it will get better.  I fully apply myself to every aspect of life, to not miss a moment and I refuse to let my diagnosis define me or my ambition. I stay healthy, take care of my body, and will never take my health for granted.
Picture
Photography by KelGrand Photography

What are these obstacles?
Physically, I have experienced a few long-term chemo affects. Calcification in my ankle joints and sensitivity to any kind of cream or lotion on my face. I experienced severe chemo burn, shortly after the 4.5 year protocol of chemotherapy treatment, was finished and therefore I find myself needing to use hypo allergenic everything.  I also experienced, and continue to from time to time, reaction to UV rays. Mentally, the future can be somewhat scary, as the length of time and high dose chemo could create long term affects. I don't focus on that but instead, live for today.

What is it like getting to speak to elementary school kids about what you have gone through?
I find it very satisfying!  They ask really great, and funny questions. I like explaining the importance of taking care of yourself and being kind to others, as you never know what they might be going through.

How did you come up with this idea?
I was invited to help raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and am very passionate about sharing my story.  I just want to help young kids understand that its ok to be different, illness shouldn't define you and to always be nice to others.
Picture
Photography by Lori Sutphin

How long have you been playing softball?
What is your favorite memory playing?
10 years
Last season I had a coach that was amazing.  I was in a slump and wasn't performing my best. It was my last game with a team and coaches I loved.  We were in the semi-finals game at the World Series, in Johnson City TN.  I was up to bat.  We needed a hit.   Coach Eric Rail looked at me and said 'No matter what happens up there, I will always be proud of you” We didn't win the game, lost by 1.  But I got that hit.  One of my most rewarding moments ever.

What are some goals that you have for your future?
I plan to attend college to get my BSN, then work as an RN, working my way to becoming a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
