Evelyn Kramer – Iowa
Nomination by Andreau Kramer
Photography by Emily Hildreth Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Evelyn Kramer has been inspiring girls to try wrestling for the last six years. When she started, she was one of five girls to wrestle in the school district. Her first four years were spent wrestling boys, with an occasional match with another female. The odds were hardly ever in her favor. She won only one match in her first year but didn't quit. She is now ranked within Iowa and is helping grow the sport and her school team. She encourages all girls to at least try wrestling once. For Evelyn, wrestling brought strength both physically and mentally.

Tell us about your wrestling career.

I started in the seventh grade with four other girls. I am now a senior and planning on wrestling for the Buena Vista University after I graduate.

What is your wrestling team like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
My team is a good mix of new wrestlers and some with more experience. I feel I am one of the leaders on the team because I have more experience. I do off season wrestling, which helps build my abilities and meet more people.

What do you wish other non-wrestling girls knew about wrestling?
That it's not just about wrestling. It's about being a part of a team and building bonds between other athletes. You are able to experience some high energy situations and grow from them as a team.

What is a favorite accomplishment from wrestling?
That more girls are trying the sport and the support for the team continues to grow.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
That until my senior year I was a four-sport athlete. I ran cross country, track, and played softball along with wrestling year-round. I am also volunteer for community events whenever I can.

What else would you like to talk about?
Besides wrestling in college, I plan to major in Physical Therapy. I did my own PT and feel in love with the type of patient care I received.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Wrestling, my family, and my dog Briggs.

How did you find your senior photographer, Emily Hildreth Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Emily Hildreth has taken pictures of my family for the last couple of years. I didn't want anyone else to take my pictures. She made it fun and made sure I was comfortable during my session. I had a lot of fun when we got into the wrestling complex.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
Wrestling season and the new team we have. We are joining with another school and will double our team size. It should be a very exciting year.

What will you miss most about high school?
I have some really great teachers. I will miss the familiarity of my school and having the support they give.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Every year we each pick out a new ornament at Christmas time. We are close to needing two trees. We also have a tradition where we hide an ornament that looks like a pickle and the first one to find it gets to open their gift first.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
Go to football games, go for ice cream, make TikToks, and just hang out.

What is your best leadership skill?
I'm honest, a good listener, and coachable. I find something to learn from even the worse situations.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Most likely at my house or hanging out with friends.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Wrestling season and having a new team.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I had to earn my way to state wrestling. It took a lot of practice and me making a choice to stay focused on my goal.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up. I may suck and hurt but you will never regret it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be graduated and moving on to my final years of PT school. Hopefully I will be coaching a wrestling team by then.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I go on vacation with my family to Idaho and Oregon every other summer to see my moms side of the family.

Picture
Photography by Emily Hildreth Photography

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can make a clover shape with my tongue.

3 Things on your bucket list
Graduate college, go to Hawaii, and go to Rome.

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom. She is a surgical nurse and loves her job. It's a tough job somedays but she manages to always find the good in it.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I'm inspiring because I joined a sport that didn't have many females and didn't change how they practices because I was there. I had to accept what it was and either be apart of it or not. Once I made my choice, there was no stopping me. I wanted to be the best version I could be.

Hayden Lawrence - Virginia
Nomination by Sarah
Photography by Melissa Waller Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Hayden is the true meaning of compassion for all. She keeps a special place in her heart for special needs kids, elderly, and animals. Since elementary school, Hayden would always take time from her own tasks to make sure she helped those in class that needed it. Most recently she volunteered her time to help local kids with disabilities learn to play baseball. She also loves to teach little girls the sport of cheerleading. Along with being a cheerleader, Hayden has volunteered her time at a farm that provides counseling services to the community. She leads her peers by example.

What are your favorite things to do with children?
Recently I have been asked to do a lot of babysitting. When I spend time with little kids, I enjoy baking with them the most. I also like to take them for walks and point out interesting things to them. We play sports outside. And when are all done and tired, I like to sit with them in my lap and watch a movie.

What do you love most about spending time with the elderly?
I enjoy meeting new people, especially the elderly. I think they are so cute. I love hearing stories about their lives and looking at old pictures. I just think the elderly population is so interesting. The events they have witnessed or things they lived through. They have a lot of knowledge and I think there is a lot to learn if we just take the time to listen.

What is your favorite animal and why?
My favorite animal is a horse. I have grown up riding horses all my life. Horses are gentle and caring animals, and they are so smart. They make great companions. My favorite style of riding is western. I have competed in a few shows and had a great time doing that. I hope to one day own my own horse.

Tell us about your volunteer time with kids with disabilities.
In my hometown, little league has a team just for kids with disabilities called the sunshine league. As a senior softball player, I will team up with one kid from the sunshine league and help them play a game. I encourage my player to swing and hit the ball the best they can, and then we hold hands and run the bases. The kids are usually scared so it takes a lot of encouragement to get them up to the plate. I help them get over their fears. Usually after the first inning, the kids really start enjoying the game.

What has your cheer career been like?
I cheered a little over the years, but over the past year I really started to invest a lot of time and energy into the sport of cheerleading. I am currently on two cheer teams. I am on a competition cheer team called USA all stars. We will travel all over the nation this coming year to compete against other teams. It will be my first season and I am very excited. I am also on my high school’s football sideline cheer team. Though they are very different styles of cheerleading, I love them both.

What is your favorite memory helping little girls with cheer?
Most little girls love cheerleading and look up to cheerleaders. I like to teach little girls that I babysit a few chants from sideline cheer. My favorite memory is having friends over and teaching their little sisters how to stunt in the pool. Sometimes my mom will help and be a base, that’s really fun. My high school is supposed to host a cheer camp this year for kids. I am really looking forward to volunteering for that.

What do you do when you volunteer at the farm?
I have volunteered for summer horse camps. Usually getting horses ready for lessons and cleaning stalls. Sometimes I will lead horses for kids during lessons for beginning riders. I have also volunteered at farms during Christmas time for special events. We set up stations for horseback rides, coloring, and other fun activities. I’m hoping I get the chance to do that again this year.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
We make a lot of good memories as a family. I think my favorite family memory is going on a big cruise ship. It was just me, my parents, and my brother. We were celebrating my 13th birthday. The ship had so many fun things to do. It had games, shows, waterslides, and so much more. The food was delicious, and you could get desert at any time of the day. We visited some cool islands in other countries like Bahamas, San Juan, and St. Marteen. I definitely cannot wait to do that again.

Where have you most loved to travel to?
I love to go to the beach, any beach. My favorite beach is the Outer Banks. We get to go a few times a year in our camper with friends. It’s so much fun. We hang out on the beach all day and swim. There are so many other teenagers there. My brother and I always make new friends, and we get to drive our golfcart all around the campground. I also get to take my 3 dogs along with us, they like the beach too.

What are you most looking forward to in school this year?

This is my first year in high school. I am most looking forward to all the new clubs, sports, and activities. The year so far, I have joined DECA, Turning Point USA, Future Farmers of America, and Rooted. I am also looking forward to the formal events, like homecoming. I am really enjoying high school so far. I got to choose classes that really interest me, like small animal care and strength and conditioning. It's also been fun meeting different people and making new friends.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I never give up on things I may struggle with at first, like schoolwork or sports. I have also been working really hard on diet, nutrition, and physical fitness. I love to make others laugh and smile. I always try to be happy, even on rough days.

What else would you like to talk about?
Fashion is also something that I am really into. I love shopping rather in person or online for clothes, accessories, and shoes. That is another reason that I love being on a teen modeling team, I get to put outfits together and see how it all goes together in photos. I also love doing my own hair and makeup. Right now, I am most into western style clothes, and prints. Almost anything looks good with a cute pair of boots! I think one day I would like to be a professional model.

How did you find your photographer, Melissa Waller Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I am on the teen modeling team for my photographer, Melissa Waller. This is my second year being an ambassador for her. We have so much fun doing different shoots throughout the year. I love working with Melissa and feel really comfortable in front of the camera with her. Melissa is really good at putting together inspiration boards for the team and finding new places to shoot. She has helped me build confidence, buy taking amazing photos and always telling me how beautiful I am inside and out. I plan to stay on her team through my senior year of high school.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would probably find me in my room relaxing. I do not get a lot of downtime right now. So, when I do I like to catch up with friends on social media, see what’s new on IG or TikTok, and maybe take in a good movie. And just be at home with my parents, they do not get much downtime either.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
My competition cheer team is starting in November. I am really excited to travel and experience that. So far, we have competitions in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, Las Vegas, and maybe Florida. My family is also going to take a cruise in December for Christmas, and I am really excited to go to Aruba for the first time. After that, I will start preparing for my first high school softball season.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I was really struggling with my health and weight over the past few years. Over the past year I have lost over 60 pounds. With the help of my mom, I really focused on fitness and nutrition. We spent a lot of time looking up new recipes and prepping healthy food. I learned that I love working out and going to the gym. I feel so much better in my own skin.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Just never give up on things that are important to you. Even when you feel like you can’t do something, I promise you can. Not everything comes natural to everyone, but with practice and patience, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself attending my dream college Florida State University, and hopefully playing softball for them. I want to be a dental hygienist when I grow up. I am going to work really hard on my grades while in high school so I can get into FSU. I would love to attend school and relax on the Florida beaches when I am able to.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to bake. I look and find different desert recipes to make for my family. I also enjoy cake decorating. I try to make a cake for each holiday. I have collected so many baking accessories over the years, I enjoy getting everything out and seeing what I can come up with.

3 Things on your bucket list
Attend Florida State University
Travel to the Maldives
Meet Dolly Parton

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom is the most inspiring person to me. She teaches and helps me so much with anything that I need. She is the one that has taught me to never give up. My mom is always there for me and my brother, even when she is tired.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I have really enjoyed this experience so much. Thank you for the opportunity.

Macadyn Holley – Mississippi
Nomination & Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Macadyn Holley was born with multiple heart problems. God has used this sweet girl in unimaginable ways. She was set for surgery to correct her issues, but the day came, and the worst malfunction was cured. She only had a minor surgery, and now Her heart is whole! She has a fantastic testimony and a zest for life that is unmatched! So many of her peers look up to her, and she is such a bright light! This angel touched my heart on the day of her senior session, and I definitely will not forget her for years to come!!

Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography

What do you want people to know about your heart problems and how they affect you today?

I had three holes in my heart. The worst hole was between the main artery, which ran through the muscle into the pumping side of my heart. This hole had only been documented in 9 other people in the world. There were no known fixes for this problem. This would have ended my sports career. Cardiologists from all over the country and Canada came to examine me. However, after much prayer by my church and parents, this hole disappeared on the day of my surgery. My surgeon fixed the other two holes; now I can play sports again.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am currently running for Valedictorian of our senior class. I am the varsity setter and co-captain for the Volleyball team and was recently honored for surpassing 1,000 varsity career assists. I am also on the varsity basketball team. I am very active in her church youth group and community. Last November, I was honored to receive the Junior Leadership of Alcorn County award, voted on by our City and County leaders. Due to my heart conditions as a child, I would like to go into the medical field and work in Pediatrics.

Tell us about your volleyball career. When did you get started, and where are you at with it now?
I started playing Volleyball in the seventh grade. I have played setter for both school and travel ball teams over the past six years. As a senior, this will be my last year to play. However, I would love to coach a travel team in the future.

What are your roles and responsibilities as co-captain?
As co-captain of my school volleyball team, I must show the underclassmen what it takes to succeed and push one another. We have been one of the top 4 teams in our state for the past two years. I want to lead by example as we prepare for the state playoffs this year. I want them to see my desire to win and love for my team.

What is your team like, and what is a favorite memory with them?
Our team is really close. We root for each other and try our best to encourage each other. My favorite memory was when we beat our county rival last year. That was a huge accomplishment for our team.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would like to think that I am an encouraging leader. Before giving constructive criticism, I point out my teammate's good qualities and what they are getting right on the court. I believe in lifting others up in order to get the best performance out of them.

Picture
Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography

What position do you play in basketball and why do you love it?

I am a shooting guard. I enjoy this position because it allows me to demonstrate a talent not many people know that I have.

What is your favorite accomplishment with basketball?
We call our state basketball competition the Big House. Playing in the Big House with my team at the state finals last year was an unforgettable experience.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am very close with my family and love spending time with them. My father, Cory, is our home church's Associate Pastor and Youth Minister. My mother, April, is a Nurse Practitioner. I have a younger sister, Palin, who plays on the volleyball team with me. We have two dogs named Millie and Hazel. I like to wind down on my few days off by watching Grey's Anatomy.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
In 2021, we took our whole extended family to Disney World. It was a magical experience, and I will never take for granted the opportunity I had to spend time with them. My favorite part of this vacation was sitting in front of the castle watching the fireworks show.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I love to talk about Jesus. I am passionate about bringing my friends and family closer to God. Above all else, I want everyone to know that Jesus loves them and desires to be close to them. I have seen Him move in such amazing ways in my own life on more than one occasion, and I cannot imagine anyone going through life without His love and protection. So, in case you didn't know, let me remind you today that Jesus loves you.

What do you love most about the church you attend?
I absolutely love my church friend group. We go out and spend time together. We pray for one another, and I know I can always depend on them for whatever I need. We support each other in our accomplishments and defeats. I could not make it without them.

How did you find your photographer, Jessica Coulson Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Jessica Coulson was from our hometown when she started taking pictures. She has since moved to Memphis, but we were familiar with her photographic talent, so we sought her out for my Senior portraits. One of the things that really stuck out during the session was how Jessica listened to us and what we wanted the pictures to look like. She was very receptive to taking photos at a new location she had never photographed. We asked her to photograph me at LeBonheur Hospital with the hearts outside the building, and she absolutely knocked it out of the park.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Next semester, I get to shadow at St. Jude and LeBonheur Hospital to nail down what area of pediatrics I would like to go into. Right now, I would like to be a Neonatologist, but this may change. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I want to work with kids and make a difference in their lives.

Nevaeh Fulk

Nevaeh Fulk – Kansas
Nomination by June Tellez
Photography by Stacey at Artistic Views Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Nevaeh Fulk is a ray of sunshine on a dark day; her personality radiates kindness. From the moment you meet her, you will notice how friendly and joyful she is! She volunteers in her church and is passionate about helping other young people come to know Jesus. Her fun-loving personality led her to be cast as the lead role in a Christian documentary about human trafficking to which she volunteered her time and efforts to bring awareness to the cause. Her love for health and people is inspiring and perfect for her pursuit in a degree in Kinesiology.

Tell us about your volunteer opportunities at your church.
I have had the privilege of serving in the kids’ area, doing praise and worship on stage, special operations, the coffee shop, the merch team and many special events. It’s been an opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself.

What do you love most about your church and your membership there?
I love the lessons and the truth my pastor preaches. It has taught me so much and helped me through many trials of life. Being involved in my church has also helped me build many strong relationships there throughout the years.

What leadership opportunities have you had within these experiences?
I have been a leader in my youth group, bringing whoever I can to church to hear the word and helping everyone be engaged and included. It has led me to also be a leader at FCA.

What is your best leadership quality?
Boldness. I am not afraid to stand up for what is right and for what I believe in. I know who I am and I stand on it.

What did you learn about human trafficking in your endeavors with the documentary?
I learned how real it is. You can hear about it on the news or in stories but this experience made it more real. It made me realize how aware you need to be of what is going on around you and to never take a second of this life for granted.

What was filming like for that?
I would say it was pretty hard, but rewarding. The content was difficult and emotional and I had never acted before. It was filmed a lot outside in the cold. But that just opened my eyes more to what some girls go through in their every day lives when they’ve been trafficked.

What was a memorable moment from that experience?
Filming the gun scene in the woods was memorable because I had to act out a scene of having a gun to my head, fighting off an attacker. It was choreographed but it was still emotional and perspective changing.

Picture
Photography by Stacey at Artistic Views Photography

Why did you choose a career in Kinesiology?
I have always loved health and fitness and I want to use that passion to help others become the best, healthiest versions of themselves. I’ve had a GI disease my whole life that required me to eat a special diet and that is where my passion and interest for nutrition and exercise began.

What is your school day like with dual enrollment?
It is very busy and there is always work coming in. I get up in the morning and head to my two high school classes. After that I head to my college classes. I usually try to get a workout in before I start my shift at my job. It’s harder but I enjoy the challenge.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You could find me at the gym or spending time with my family country dancing out by the firepit!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
The opportunity to be a D1 athlete, rowing at either K-State or KU and finishing my senior year!

Picture
Photography by Stacey at Artistic Views Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a former competitive volleyball player having played for ten years and have enjoyed competing on my high track and field team throwing Javelin and Shot Put. This semester, in addition to two high school classes, I am taking 9 college credit hours at MidAmerica Nazarene University to gather credits for my degree in Kinesiology. I am a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and will be leading a sermon for my peers this semester.

What will your sermon for your peers be about?
It will be from the book of Romans talking about how God has chosen you for a purpose.

What is a favorite memory in track and field?
I love being part of a team and competing, but I mostly love just getting to hang out with my friends and encouraging each other at meets.

What was your volleyball team like and what did you love most about it?
We were all high energy and all loved good competition. My team was where I developed some of my closest friends over the years.

Picture
Photography by Stacey at Artistic Views Photography

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?

The number one thing that I could go on and on about is the goodness of God and the way I have seen Him move in my life. I am also passionate about nutrition and fitness, taking care of the body that God has blessed you with. I love helping other people feel better about themselves, and just better in general, through nutrition and health.

How did you find your photographer, Stacey at Artistic Views Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through other friends and other high schools’ past senior pictures. She was very friendly and willing to try anything. Stacey was willing to do whatever it takes to get the best shot. She was also very creative and full of unique and fun ideas.

Lexi Blais

10/17/2023

Picture

Lexi Blais – Colorado
Nomination by Jessica Blais
Photography by David Schlatter Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lexi Blais is the Definition of inspiration. At fourteen she was diagnosed with
Tourette’s Syndrome and ADHD during the pandemic. Adjusting to her new normal she maintains a 3.7 GPA, competes on an All-Star cheer team that placed top ten globally last year, and president of her chapter of NAHS. Contributing to 10+ other activities and athletics at school, she has won numerous awards. However, Lexi is more than her accomplishments. She is kind, thoughtful, inclusive and a person that pushes you to be your best. A force to be reckoned with, Lexi models hard work and overcoming adversity.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’m often described as outgoing and talkative, public speaking? I’m your girl. Leading large groups? I got you. Being able to advocate for myself and others is an ability that I cherish and hope to continue to be given opportunities to utilize. Being unapologetically you is the most important quality. It allows people to achieve great things despite backlash or hardships they face. Knowing that I am the only person who lives my life allows me to continue pushing to be the best version of myself. I want to encourage others to be the truest and best version of themselves.

What else would you like to talk about?
At Nine years old I injured my knee while warming up to perform. My team would’ve been DQ’d due to us not having a replacement athlete. However I couldn’t let my team down, instead I figured out how to tumble and perform one-legged. I pushed myself to succeed for my team. This competition would lead to my program and I’s first summit ( an invitation only international competition). That competition made me realize I'm truly capable of what I put my mind to and still pushes me to this day to keep adding to my now 26 titles.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I love history and could talk forever about it! As a kid I watched documentaries on ancient civilizations and was obsessed with mythologies especially Greek and Egyptian! I also wholeheartedly believe the idea that if we don't learn history, we are bound to repeat it. I currently love fashion history and what social needs formed the clothing trends! I also love the fact that when looking at history, especially with first person sources, it’s evident that humans haven’t changed much. A girl who lived hundreds of years ago struggled with the same concepts as me and that is comforting.

How did you find your photographer, David Schlatter ? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
David’s been doing my cheer photos for three years now! I Knew he was going to do a great job and we would have fun too! He’s great at getting you comfortable in front of the camera and he came up with so many cool ideas! In one outfit we had real fire, my poor mom was the one who had to light me while he was behind the camera. I was dying laughing! I loved just being able to show up and have fun even if I'd leave with my hair a mess and tired from all the concepts!

Kayden Stafford

Picture

Kayden Stafford – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Kaiya Harris Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kayden Stafford is a senior in high school and is such an inspiration to everyone around her. She’s the president of her school's FFA chapter and is an active member of the National Beta Club. Kayden is an admirable, caring, generous teen who always puts others first and is a light to all around her.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One thing that my nomination doesn't cover is my work ethic. On top of taking AP classes and dual enrollment classes, I also have a part-time job! I have worked at the same retail store since November of 2021, and I plan to stay there until I go off to college. I enjoy my coworkers, planning events, and helping out my bosses whenever I can!

What else would you like to talk about?
Without my support system, I would be nowhere near where I am today. It's because of my close friends and family's support that I'm able to accomplish I things I do. My parents have never fallen short of giving me every tool I've ever needed to be successful, and they have always supported me through everything.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk forever about agriculture and the importance it has on our Earth. Whether or not people realize it, every industry you could ever think of relates back to agriculture in some way and it's what this country was built on. Unfortunately, our farmers are still underpaid in this country, and I'd love to play a role in bringing reforms to that community.

How did you find your photographer, Kaiya Harris Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I actually met my photographer probably close to 4 years ago through mutual friends and we've been besties ever since. I watched her so proudly as she started up her dream photography business so when it came time for my senior pictures it was an obvious choice. I always feel so comfortable when Kaiya is behind the camera, and she will go to lengths to get the best shots. Kaiya is so passionate about her work, and you can tell she's where she belongs! Maybe I'm biased, but I love my photographer!

Jacob is passionate about being an important part of his team and shows respect and appreciation for his coaches, teammates, and young players who are just beginning their awesome journey. What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’d have to say the most inspiring thing about me is that I’m always looking to be great, and improve at the things I care about. I’ve learned the importance of giving my all in the moment because I’ll never be able to get it back.

What egreat andyou like to talk about?
I believe coming over adversity helps and shapes people into who they need to be. I feel that if you want something, you’ll try to get it with all you got. If you fail, you take that loss as a lesson and try again.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel like I could talk about football forever. The game is great, but simply the fact that you can play with your friends under those Friday night lights make it so much more personal and thrilling. Football also helps create discipline in the people who are a part of the team.

How did you find your photographer, Erinn Letts Photos? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
The photographer, Erinn, was so nice and really knows what she’s doing. She helped me feel comfortable and spent a lot of time talking to me and making sure she got to know me so she could focus on my personality.

She is a 4-H member and spends summers preparing her animals for the fair. Hallie is a passionate outdoor enthusiast, enjoying archery, fishing, hunting, and skiing. She is an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and Student Council. She would make an incredible, inspiring teen.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My motivation begins with setting a goal and working hard. I want to accomplish what I have set out to do and try constantly to do my best. It doesn't matter what I am doing; my best is what you will see in the completed project. I strive to be a role model to young children and friends. I want to help others to do their best and to shine. Being successful is a personal decision that I make to achieve my goals. I know what I want to do and will find a way to accomplish it.

What else would you like to talk about?
I know this is not typical for many girls, but I love hunting and fishing with my family at our cabin in WV. The place is beautiful and peaceful, and the quiet of the woods in the early morning is surreal. Listening to the leaves while walking on a crisp morning is calming and exciting at the same time. The challenge of getting to your spot without being heard right before sunrise is fantastic. Dawn breaks over the mountaintop, and the light is just different. It is the most incredible experience!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I have a passion for animals and for caring for them. I have a desire to help them and make sure that they are safe in their environment. I do a lot of dog sitting for people and am responsible for their care. Our family business does a lot to help rescue dogs and cats, sponsoring flights to move them from danger and finding them new homes. It is rewarding to be involved in this; I want to become more involved as I get older.

How did you find your photographer, AH Photography ? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my fantastic photographer through my friends and other family members. April has an excellent reputation in our area. My experience with AH Photography was fun and exciting. Ella Evans

Ella Evans – Iowa
Nomination by Shalan Evans
Photography by Andra Travis Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ella Evans is inspiring because she has a heart of gold. She radiates lightheartedness and she uses her gifts to bring joy to others.

Ella is a senior enrolled in the baking program at a nearby community college. Baking allows her to express her creativity, while making the recipients of her baked goods feel special. She loves to make people smile any way she can.

Ella loves singing and playing all things strings. Harp, piano, guitar, and ukulele are her favorites. She plays harp for the symphony orchestra, various events, and weddings. She has used her musical talents to lift spirits in nursing/hospice homes, echoing the halls with beautiful music.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I like to think of myself as a light in this world. My relationship with Jesus has always been a priority in my life. I try to make the world a better place by being kind to others. I like bringing joy to people’s lives with music and baked goods! “Baking spirits bright!” is a fun motto for me.

I work as a barista at a local coffee shop. I love my job. I get to meet lots of fun people and have learned a lot of new skills. I enjoy writing encouraging messages on the cups that we use for drinks.

One day I hope to have my own bakery and coffee shop. I am loving baking school and can’t wait to use everything I am learning in my own business!

What else would you like to talk about?
Aside from baking and music, I also compete nationally in competitive precision air rifle shooting. I meet weekly with my team at the American Legion to practice. We shoot ten quarter sized targets with a bulseye the size of pencil lead. We shoot from ten meters, three positions each. Standing, kneeling, and prone. Last year I qualified to compete nationally at Camp Perry in Ohio. It was such a fun experience and I hope to qualify again this year. Besides learning a fun new skill, competitive air rifle has also provided me with a collage scholarship. I would love to see more young people get involved in this sport.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel passionate about music. I enjoy writing music, learning new music and playing the same old songs I play all the time. When I feel down, you can usually find me in my room playing my piano. If i’m going to Bible camp or to a campfire, I will always bring a guitar or ukulele along… maybe both! Playing music for people to sing along to is so much fun for me.

A year ago I was asked to be part of the worship team at church. I was happy to oblige. Every week I rehearse the music and help lead worship service. I really enjoy that.

How did you find your photographer, Andra Travis Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I love my photographer! Andra has been a lifelong friend of my moms. I am friends with her daughter, Lily.

My mom is also a photographer and will be taking some of my senior pictures as well. We really wanted Andra to do some too because we love her work and I wanted the full “senior picture experience.”

I’m so happy with the pictures she’s posted for my sneak peek. I think she captured my personality perfectly. My session was very personalized. I cant wait to see the rest of them!

My senior session was an adventure to say the least. We knew that one of the locations we were going to was overgrown with weeds. My mom packed a hedge trimmers and a leaf blower so that they could clean up the place before taking the photos. Another location Andra wanted to go to happened to be in the middle of the Iowa River, out on a sandbar. We had to make our way down a steep hill through weeds and mud. Then we had to walk through mud and water to get to the sandbar. We laughed all they way marking these shots super memorable. Andra is so fun to work with and made me feel super comfortable.

Eden Price

Eden Price – Florida
Nomination & Photography by Traci Sproule Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Eden believes passionately in serving others. She is 1st in command of a US Naval Sea Cadet Unit, a Congressional Gold Medalist and has over 400 hours of community service. She loves God, she loves people and she inspires others to do the same.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
As team captain and high-performance coxswain of my rowing team, it is my job to be the voice of reason and motivation. If my rowers are feeling tired and their muscles are aching during a long row, I'll start singing and telling jokes from my Cox seat to liven up their spirits. Right before my boat won the state championship and my rowers were feeling tired, I yelled out encouragement to the finish line. I make sure that in everything I do, I am lifting others up.

What else would you like to talk about?
I plan on serving as a Nurse Corps Officer in the Navy, I have never been able to picture myself in a profession outside of hands-on service. I want to help save lives, I want to be the ounce of comfort found in a soldier's most discomforting moment. From when I was a young girl, little acts of service towards others have always brightened my day. Although my service continues to be small, one day I will dedicate myself to bringing aid at the cost of my own life so others may live.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
The fascinating functions of the human body are something my mouth could run on about without ceasing. The way our body can mindlessly perform mitosis when we scrape our knees or how our brain translates signals from sensory receptors at the tips of our fingers with ease has always captivated my thoughts. How does my heart pump so much blood daily and why and am I able to breathe both consciously and subconsciously? Questions like these run around the prefrontal cortex of my brain. When I become a nurse, I will use this fascination to save lives.

How did you find your photographer, Traci Sproule Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it? (If you took a selfie or your images are from an immediate family member and you'd rather not answer, you can put n/a in this box. Otherwise, please answer each of the three questions.
I saw pictures on Instagram that my photographer shot and loved her work. She made me feel comfortable in all of the different poses and outfit changes. We had so much fun together. I would recommend her to all of my friends. She really captured my senior story!

Emery Keebaugh

Picture

Emery Keebaugh – Kansas
Nomination & Photography by Abby Lynne Photo
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Emery Keebaugh is an inspiring teen not only for her school involvement and the way she treats others, but for being an outstanding student athlete! She has won 4A state triple jump three times and has accepted an athletic scholarship from Washburn University to play Volleyball in 2024. Some of her other accomplishments include a 4.0 grade average, being a National Honor Society Member, being a three-sport athlete, and making the All State Volleyball Team her Sophomore and Junior years. As part of her academic pathway, she works in a kindergarten class and hopes to be a teacher someday!

Picture
Photography by Abby Lynne Photo

What is the triple jump and what do you do to train for it?
The triple jump is a jumping event, slightly similar to the long jump, but instead of one jump, I alternate between three leg cycles. The triple jump is all about speed and power so I do a lot of running and leg workouts to stay in shape for this event.

What does it mean to you to be a triple time champion of the triple jump?
It was so exciting!!! I was really proud of myself because I put in a lot of hard work and time. The State Track Meet in Wichita is so much fun but I was super nervous, so I was so happy to be able to pull it off again my junior year. I felt lucky to have such an awesome jumping coach, Coach Rose, by my side.

Tell us about your volleyball career.
I had not picked up a volleyball before sixth grade but decided to give it a shot when I started middle school in Ottawa, KS. I loved it from the minute that I stepped on the court. Volleyball is SUCH a team sport, everyone involved must work hard together. I love this aspect, playing has created such amazing friendships and bonds.

What is your volleyball team like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My school volleyball team is very close, they are like my family. We all get along and have a wonderful time together. I am extremely competitive so at times, am frustrated when we don’t play well because I know the girls on my team and KNOW we can play better. I would say I am considered a leader on the court, but volleyball is a team sport so in order to win, it takes all of us putting in effort and hustling.

What is the third sport you play and what is a favorite accomplishment from it?
The third sport I play is basketball. I made All League Honorable Mention and the All Defensive Team my Junior Year so that was a huge accomplishment for me. I have a lot of fun playing and love my coach and teammates.

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
Much to my surprise, I have loved my Economics Class this year. I am very interested in the economic system in our country and how it regulates and affects our spending ability, including cost of living.
What has been your favorite service project in the NHS?
My favorite service project for NHS is working at Meals on Wheels. I helped prepare and package meals for individuals and families who are unable to do so themselves. It was rewarding and fun.

What do you love most about working in the kindergarten class?
I love the kids! I love helping and watching them learn new things. My favorite thing is seeing the look in their eyes when they learn something new or have done something correctly.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I am more of a “show not tell” person when it comes to my leadership style. I would prefer that others learn from my actions rather than saying something verbally. I have had some great leaders and coaches so have a lot of people to look up to and hope that others will say the same about me.

What will you miss most about high school?
I will miss a ton about high school! It is hard to narrow it down…I will miss my friends, my teachers, my coaches, sports, and activities (to name a few). High School has been amazing but I am ready to take the next step.

What are you most looking forward to about attending Washburn University?
I am most looking forward to playing volleyball. I am excited about the whole college experience: being on my own, classes, making new friends, new experiences, etc. However, I am most excited about playing volleyball for a college level team and everything that comes with being part of it.

Picture
Photography by Abby Lynne Photo

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Although I spend A LOT of time participating in sports, I also love to hang out with my friends, my family, and my dog, Margo. I am a huge dog lover! I try to help others out with their dogs whenever I can and have volunteered at the local dog shelter in the past. Overall, I just try to be a good person. I am DEFINITELY not perfect and have had to learn huge lessons in my life but if possible, I try to remember: "If you can't say something nice, don't talk at all is my advice" (my Nana taught me this when I was little)

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Probably sports, volleyball in particular. I started participating in sports at a very young age and it has always been my outlet and passion. I love everything about playing: it is a great way to stay physically fit and healthy, it helps with anxiety, it is a great way to meet new friends, and most importantly, it is just super fun! When I am not playing volleyball, I spend a lot of time watching (on TV and in person). It is absolutely amazing to me just how good the elite athletes are and what they have accomplished.

How did you find your photographer, Abby Lynne Photo? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer, Abigail Hochuli, through friends. I wasn't sure about the location, just that I wanted the photos to be in an urban setting, so I let Abby decide. I am so glad that I did! I loved the locations that she chose and we had the best time. I am not the best at looking "natural" but Abby made me laugh and I felt completely comfortable. It was SO hot the evening of my shoot (over 100 degrees) but Abby was such a trooper and went above and beyond to make sure we got the best photos.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would most likely be hanging out with my friends, playing with my dog, practicing volleyball, or sleeping/relaxing (I don’t have a ton of time to chill so I like to take advantage when I can).

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited about attending Washburn University in the fall of 2024 and playing volleyball for the next four years. I look forward to meeting new friends and having new experiences, both on and off the court.

Kaelyn Hager

10/12/2023

Picture

Kaelyn Hager – Texas
Nomination by Kendra Hager
Photography by Fluid Frames Dance Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kaelyn Hager is an inspiring teen because of her passion and perseverance. Kaelyn says that dancing is one of the most significant parts of who she is and will become. She sacrifices her free time balancing rigorous academics, extensive studio hours, school cheer and dance, and community performances. Her perseverance is impressive. From being told that black girls have poor feet and turnout to dealing with studio bullies, Kaelyn turned discouragement into accomplishments, dancing in a performance with Misty Copeland, receiving reassurance from Lauren Anderson, modeling for a favorite dancewear company, and participating in Summer Performing Arts with Juilliard.

Picture
Photography by Fluid Frames Dance Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One inspiring thing my nomination does not mention is that even though I am still growing as a dancer, I have made people I don’t know feel proud and inspired. I’ve read comments like, “Your daughter is an inspiration to my mocha ballerina.” “I’m always happy seeing black girls do amazing things in dance.” “I see your daughter is still trailblazing in dance.” One supporter called my accomplishments “noteworthy” and “worthy of communal support.” I realize that what I do matters, even if, to me, it’s insignificant.

What else would you like to talk about?
I want to talk about my inspiration. I aim to major in commercial dance to become a professional dancer and studio owner. Pace and Berkley are my top schools for dance education. After several years at non-competing classical ballet studios, I pursued competition dance. Competing was short-lived during the pandemic, but studio owner Traci Greene inspired me to use my passion to serve the youth. Her non-profit provides dance scholarships and performance opportunities in Houston’s Urban Nutcracker. Assisting the minis at my home studio and teaching elementary students with my school cheer/dance team allow me to share my passion.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I’m passionate that dance is art, a sport, therapy, and my safe space. Being uneasy around too many people fades when I dance. I love performing and making the audience feel what I feel without speaking. Growing up in dance, I have experienced toxicity’s physical and psychological toll regarding hair, makeup, complexion, body type, feet, and more. My mom sheltered me, but as I matured in dance, I realized that my physical and mental health are essential to protecting my safe space. From bias to bullying, I encourage affected dancers to take control of their physical and mental health.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Institute of Contemporary Dance, my home studio, used Fluid Frames Dance Photography to take company pictures last season. The experience with Fluid Frames was great, and they made the session relaxed and fun. I love that Fluid Frames printed my very first leap during the session. It was exciting to see my photo selected to be on the landing page for our gallery and the reel of my shoot posted on Instagram. Of all my photos, including dancewear photography, this is one of my favorite dance photos.

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine because being included in this publication is an excellent opportunity to share my passion for dance, encourage others to use their gift to serve others, and advocate for mental and physical health. I appreciate my mom's nomination because she does so much for me, and I want to make my parents and my family proud. Thank you, Inspiring Teens Magazine, for this opportunity.

Tell us about your dance career.
I began ballet, jazz, and tap at two years old. I added pointe, modern, contemporary, and Horton over the years. I did competitive dance briefly, then performed with Houston Contemporary 2 at the Institute of Contemporary Dance for two years. I am focused on my collegiate and professional goals in commercial dance, filling in genre gaps and improving strength, flexibility, leaps, turns, and acro. I receive technical training at the Institute and dance education in collaboration with Juilliard at my high school, The Village School. Also, I enjoy my high school cheer, dance, and competitive dance teams.

What do you love most about dance?
What I love most about dance is it allows me to express myself without talking, almost as if it were another way to sign for everything I see, touch, hear, smell, and taste. Interpreting rhythmic, timed, sharp, smooth, loud, soft, swift, slow, emotional, and motionless movements is what I look forward to when performing. Dance is my therapy, escape, and more than my sport or artistic expression.

What genres do you study?
I study ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, and Horton primarily. Because I want to pursue commercial dance, I invest additional time learning different jazz styles, hip-hop, and street dance. I take tap occasionally, too. I would love to do acrodance again. I did acrodance and gymnastics for a year before a hurricane wiped out my gym. Recently, I have enjoyed other dance styles, such as African, Precision, Swing, and Salsa. I was introduced to Hustle, Carribean, Katherine Dunham, and Isadora Duncan dance styles this summer at my intensives.

Picture
Photography by Kendra Hager

Which is your favorite and why?
My favorite genre is jazz. I love Jazz Funk style. I am excited to master this style as I pursue commercial dance in college and professionally.

How did you start modeling for your favorite dancewear company?
Several months before I had a commercial photoshoot, I told my mom that I wanted to do dancewear modeling—unfortunately, the companies I wanted to model for only used models within driving distance intrastate. A few weeks passed, and I received an email from the education director at my studio from a local photographer looking for dancewear models for a commercial shoot for the dancewear company I wanted to model for. From the casting to the fittings to the hair, make-up, and photoshoot, the process was so fun, and seeing my pictures online and in the Weissman Elite catalog was exciting.

What is your studio like?
Institute of Contemporary Dance is a great community-oriented dance studio with outstanding, talented, and professional faculty. It provides many opportunities to grow as a dancer and explore new things in dance. I began virtually when the Institute opened during the pandemic, then attended in person and was invited to perform with its youth company, Houston Contemporary 2. I have grown technically and have been exposed to many professional performers, choreographers, and performance opportunities. From Lauren Anderson to Dance Theatre of Harlem, the exposure to the best in dance at the Institute is fantastic.

What was it like participating in Summer Performing Arts with Julliard?
The Summer Performing Arts with Julliard was an incredible eight hours daily for two weeks, dancing ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern, tap, and more with other dance majors worldwide. The intensive was eye-opening, with day one concert auditions and seminars about media, industry, college, career paths, voice, and Mythbusters. My favorite discussions were about nutrition and mental and physical health. We had partnering and social dance classes, private lessons, and master classes. I hung out with my teammate from school, made many new friends, and performed in the talent show. My teachers were excellent, making my closing concert performances a success.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned in school so far this year?
So far, the most interesting thing that I have learned in school this year is in Chemistry. Chemistry is not my favorite subject, but it challenges me to understand something I may see or do. It answers, “When will I ever use this in real life?” When discussing the projection of heat and cold when substances or chemicals are mixed, like how salt affects how water freezes, I thought about how my late great-grandmother made ice cream using slushy-like salt water to help the ice cream get thick and freeze.

What is the hardest class you are taking vs your favorite class?
My most challenging class is chemistry. Although I had taken Integrated Physics and Chemistry in middle school, science has been a complex subject because I am more interested in the labs and hands-on activities than the textbook. It becomes overwhelming, so I have to learn how to apply it to my everyday life, which is why Chemistry is the most interesting and challenging. Besides the obvious, my favorite class is Dance III because the curriculum and the choreography are challenging. I enjoy learning more about my passion and adding to my repertoire every day.

What is your cheer team like? What is your favorite memory with them?
Vikings Elite is a varsity cheer and nationally-ranked dance team coached by Tabitha Christy. I have been an Elite since 9th grade, and I’m a social officer. We cheer for all sports and dance during halftime. We are the spirit leaders of The Village School preschool - 12th grade. Also, we mentor our middle school cheer/dance team. We dance contemporary, lyrical, jazz, and hip-hop during competition season. Most of us have dance backgrounds, and some continue to dance in college. Team bonding is important to us, and my favorite memory is eating out before games and bonding over food.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it, you would find me napping in bed or improving my flexibility and technique in my dance room at home. Getting enough rest is essential to my physical and mental health, and with the rigor of my academic and dance schedules, I appreciate any time to relax and sleep. During the pandemic, my parents created a room for me to dance in my virtual classes, so you would probably find me there, too, working towards my dance goals.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited about performing in Houston’s Urban Nutcracker city-wide scholarship fundraiser produced by Culture Arts Initiative, Inc. for my fifth year. It’s a twist on the traditional Nutcracker, celebrating Houston’s diverse cultures through narration, acting, music, and many dance genres in addition to ballet. Also, I’m honored to be invited by Black Angels Collective to dance in their end-of-year production. Black Angels Collective is a company of technically trained dancers of color founded by Tobe Nwigwe in 2018. Lastly, I’m happy to begin preparing for competition season and Nationals with Vikings Elite, my school dance team.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was surviving an environment that was not conducive to my success in dance and choosing to leave. At first, I believed that leaving would be surrendering or a sign of failure, but during my intensive with Juilliard this summer, I learned that preserving my well-being and future goals was a sign of maturity.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I advise someone who wants to be where I am today to keep a healthy mindset and prioritize their physical and mental health. You can say no.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I see myself at Pace University, majoring in commercial dance and a minor in business, auditioning and dancing in the industry, and working towards my professional goals.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
A favorite activity of mine is creative writing. I have loved to write stories since elementary school, and I wish I had more time to write outside school. I have won several awards for my writing, including Scholastic Keys.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
A hidden talent of mine is that I can sing. I’ve been singing ever since I could talk. My first solos were at school and church, and I have been in the school choir since elementary. Like dance, music and singing are also my great escapes.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are mastering tumbling because I like acro dance and gymnastics, becoming a pet owner because my family doesn’t have any, and becoming a successful dance studio owner to serve my community.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Misty Copeland inspiring. I had the opportunity to dance on the same stage as her when I performed in “Cinderella.” Misty was the first famous ballerina I had ever heard of, and she looked like me.

Picture
Photography by Kendra Hager

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

I don’t intentionally act to inspire anyone, but I understand that what I do matters and that someone is always watching me. From encouraging words to advice to redirections from others, I have concluded that as a young black female, representation, self-pride, and perseverance are important to making myself and my parents proud, and maybe that understanding is what truly resonates with others as inspiring.

Tell us what it was like to start a new school your senior year.
I was distracted starting my senior year at a new school since I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma right before I started Arlington High. My FFA friends and teachers along with school administration have been very supportive during this challenging time. Having their support along with my family made the transition smoother than what I was expecting. They welcomed me with open arms and a caring heart.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
I cannot wait to attend my livestocks and competitions with my new FFA family and friends. I love how the Arlington FFA completes as a whole team like a family.

How did you find your senior photographer, CDP Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer (Jordan @ CDP Photography) was recommended by one of my friends. She was a local photographer and it is family owned. I'm all about supporting your local/family owned businesses. Jordan and her family came to my grandparents ranch to do the photo session....she drove 1.5 hours to do my photo session. How many photographers will do that for you? I love how Jordan treats you like you are part of her family.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned so far?
Seeing how the school community came together to rally and support me while I go through my cancer treatments.

What do you wish others knew about Hodgkin's Lymphoma?
At a young age, don’t take things for granted because one second you are fine & healthy and the next minute you can be faced with a challenge like this. When you walk the halls of the Cook Children’s hospital oncology floor, my heart sinks every time to see younger children going through cancer. No child should have to endure the pain, the sickness, the tiredness, loss of hair, etc that this disease causes.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I hope that my story will help others understand even in hard times you are still able to accomplish your goals through determination and faith.

What else would you like to talk about?
My life goal is helping the younger generations in my community through FFA and 4H. I love to see others succeed. My goal after college is to become a veterinarian. I love helping animals! I want to be the voice for those animals, large or small. I'm part of the Arlington FFA and have 2 steers that I show throughout Texas and Oklahoma. I also enjoy competing in floral and horticulture events through FFA.

What is a proud moment from FFA?
Proud moment was when I won Reserve Breed Champion with my Hereford Steer (Kerosene) at the Heart of Texas livestock show and rodeo in Waco (October 2023).

What is a favorite memory from 4H?
My favorite memory of 4H was being able to help younger generations on their projects and help them accomplish their goals.

How have these two organizations shaped you and your future?
Being in FFA and 4H have kept me grounded and humble. Both organizations have taught me real life skills that I can carry throughout my life.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My passion is agriculture. I can talk about this day and night. I literally eat, sleep, and work with my cattle every day. Children that are involved in FFA & 4H do not get enough credit on how many hours and the amount of dedication that goes into their livestock projects. Those that are involved in agriculture - I'm very proud of y'all! This comes from the bottom of my heart because I know how hard and exhausting it can be but keep pushing through those challenges because you will succeed.

Picture

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
My favorite family tradition is Thanksgiving over at my Nana & Papa’s house where everyone comes and eats Thanksgiving dinner and then my Papa, Dad, Brother, Uncle and Cousins all leave to go to the ranch to spend the rest of the holiday hunting and enjoying time with each other.

How would your friends describe you?
My friends would describe me as spontaneous, adventurous, free spirited, strong (strong willed), passionate and a great leader.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Definitely find me at the ranch or at the ag barn taking care of the cattle. I love being outdoors and being with my animals.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I’m excited to get this Hodgkins Lymphoma in remission so I can ring the bell. I want this challenge put behind me so I can place my strength on achieving all of the goals I have in place for my senior year to make it epic.

What is your family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My family is very family oriented. We sit and eat dinner together every night. We do things as a family, i.e. when I have livestock shows to attend, we do it together. Family is everything to me!
I do not try to fit in because I am who I am. Being true and honest to yourself is more important than fitting in. My passion and heart that I put into my animals and relationships show how I stand out.

Kaeli Huff – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Robert S Stevens The Gold Studio
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kaeli Huff was a shy young dancer when I first began photographing her, and I have had the privilege of watching her grow into a beautiful and elegant young lady. She is mature beyond her years and has a gentle spirit that affects anyone in her presence. Kaeli’s external beauty is beyond measure, but her beautiful spirit is truly what my pictures capture.

Tell us about your dance career.

I began dancing when I was three years old. As I got older, my interest in tumbling for our studio’s tumbling team grew, and I tumbled from ages seven to eleven. I fell in love with my ballet class that I took throughout my tumbling ages, and decided to join the competition dance team. As of now, I still take a variety of dance classes along with a different studio competition team.

What do you love most about the world of dance?
My favorite part about the world of dance is the growing inclusivity that surrounds it. No matter what level you are at, you are encouraged to try your best and have a good time. Nobody is there to judge you or your abilities as a dancer, and everyone in the dance community has a connection in terms of feelings and emotions like nervousness.

What dances do you study?
I spend time at my studio taking ballet, jazz, tap and competition classes to work on routines. My favorite is ballet, however, because of the special connection my mind and body have when performing it. I’ve always loved the aura around ballet, and as I’ve grown older, its demand for intricacy has peaked my interest. My fascination towards ballet has only grown since I was a toddler, and being able to express myself through the various opportunities ballet has given me is truly what sets my love for dance aside from anything else.

What do you wish non-dancers knew about dancers/dancing?
I wish non-dancers knew that dance isn’t as easy as it looks. The sole purpose of dancing is to make it look easy, and a dancer wouldn’t be doing a good job if they made it seem difficult. Dance also requires an extreme amount of core strength and endurance on top of that.

If you could be on any dance tv show, which one would it be and why?
If i could be on any dance tv show, I would love to join The World of Dance. Although it isn’t on air anymore, I would’ve enjoyed dancing a Contemporary solo. I would’ve also worn a very simple and modern costume. When the show first came out, I watched it with my mom and we judged who we thought would make it to the next round. The show just seemed so positive, and the judges had great reputations.

What has been your favorite memory from dance?

My favorite memories from dance are the long practices in preparation for an upcoming performance or competition because those are the practices in which my team and I truly bond. Although the big moment is amazing, the journey towards the moment is what I’ve cherished the most.

What has been a favorite accomplishment from dance?
My favorite accomplishment from dance is finding my passion for it again after a period in time in which I lost that passion. Your mind drives you into the direction you want to go, and it’s extremely difficult to dance without having any sort of drive. You have to love it, and gaining back that love was the biggest accomplishment I could ever imagine.

What do you love most about your dance studio?
I love how positive the environment is. My dance teachers love every single one of the girls they teach, and make it evident that they appreciate our attendance. It’s very unusual that you leave dance class without a lesson or inspiring pep talk from one of our teachers. They truly care about us, and want to see us succeed in life. I also love the girls I dance with because of how compassionate and encouraging they are. A group of teenage girls doesn’t always lead to a good outcome, but we’ve never fought or had any negative misunderstandings.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I was adopted from China and raised in a small rural area, where there is minimal diversity. My heritage has had no effect on my ability to fit in with my peers or lead with my skills. I was a competitive tumbler, but at the age of 13 decided to become a dancer. Within 5 years, I have achieved a dance status that is equal to those who have danced all their lives. I am a hard worker and will push myself to achieve at the highest level. This drive has also helped me reach honor status with my grades.

What else would you like to talk about?
In the future, I hope to make an impact on my college campus community through service and avocation towards inclusivity and equity. It has been to my advantage that I currently live in a small town, as racism has never been a huge problem for me. However, it does play a big part in many peoples’ lives. As for now, I try to give back to my current community because I believe it is an important aspect in learning to appreciate what I have been given.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?

My senior year, I’m most looking forward to cherishing what I’ve been given the past four years. During this year, it’s easy to want to move on in life, whether it be going to college or starting a big-girl job. However, cherishing and living the moment in my last year of living in my hometown is a goal that I aim to complete. My school has given me multiple opportunities to grow and learn as a teenage girl, and as a Senior, I want to end this chapter of my life with that in consideration.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?
Savor every moment. High School is the time in which you can make friends, lose friends and make silly mistakes because you have no legal responsibilities. These four years do go fast, so live in the moment, because once that moment ends, you’ll be looking back at all the missed opportunities you never paid attention to.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about dancing because it is the outlet in which I can deal with my emotions and life stressors. The connection I feel with my mind and body when I'm dancing is something that can only be felt in a first-person point of view. This exhilarating feeling is something that no other person can externally comprehend, and I believe dancing allows me to be creative in the least judgmental setting possible.

How did you find your photographer, Robert S Stevens The Gold Studio? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I met Robert with The Gold Studio at my dance studio. He was the photographer for our recitals and was always able to capture me at my best. His care and kindness towards his models is what sets him apart from the rest. I have taken studio pictures, but his live actions shots are my favorites.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do, you would find me in my tiki bar pool area reading a book and listening to music. Being outside, reading and listening to music are my favorite ways to relax and get away from the reality of schoolwork.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I’ve recently applied for college. I’ve always been interested in my future and have had an idea of what I want to become since I was in middle school. I plan to spend my time in Undergrad learning what I like and what I dislike so that I form a solid image of what my future career will be.

McKenna Day - Ohio
Nomination and Photography by Angel Stevens Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: McKenna Day is a senior at Licking Valley High School. She is a Varsity Cheerleader. McKenna is considered a leader by her peers and school administration. During her school career, she created an anti-bullying initiative for students. Her idea was for students to pick someone they would not typically hang out with and have lunch with that student. Her idea led to more students getting to know each other and helped spread positivity. She also is actively mentoring elementary cheerleaders and is considered a positive influence on the younger girls. McKenna will be attending The Ohio State University next fall and majoring in criminology with a minor in forensic science. Her long-term goal is to become a Coroner.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?

I am beyond excited to participate in activities that allow me to leave behind a legacy like putting my handprint on the wall in my school. I enjoy knowing I will be remembered for making positive changes to our community and being a friend to my peers.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
I excel in making everyone feel included. It’s important to me to hear peoples’ opinions and feelings and care for those who are unspoken for. I do my best to cater to every person involved in activities with me.

Why was it important to you to create an anti-bullying initiative?
I am a firm believer in the fact that no person is above others, I always want to find ways to unite my peers. My goal was to eliminate separation by social cliques and judgment while encouraging making new friends.

What do you do to mentor elementary cheerleaders?
Every year since I was a freshman, the cheer program has held mini and biddy cheer camps. I have made it a point to form bonds with every girl and leave behind a positive image of cheerleading, show them compassion, and erase the mean girl stereotype behind cheerleaders.

What led to you wanting a career in criminology? What do you hope to do with your degree?
My mother was a detective and deputy sheriff for 25 ½ years and I was always involved and intrigued by her work. I feel a calling for helping bring peace to victims and their families while simultaneously serving justice.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have been blessed with the opportunity to attend multiple college cheer camps to learn about leadership, positive community influence, and team-building skills. I love uplifting other young women and spending time in nature.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I have cheered since I was in primary school. I have now cheered for 8 years total and I’m the best I’ve been in my career.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
My favorite memory from cheer is staying overnight in the gymnasium with my team for our Christmas lock-in every year. It gave me a chance to have a hang out with my best friends and get to know those I was unfamiliar with better.

What is a favorite accomplishment from cheer?
My favorite accomplishment from cheer is getting 5 trophies with my team at Otterbein during an Americheer camp. We struggled with confidence, stress, and frustration in the beginning but we talked it out, embraced each other and ended the camp feeling achieved.

What is your favorite team building exercise?
My favorite team building exercise is decorating our run-through banner together every Thursday evening. It gives us an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, plan, and laugh with each other.

What else would you like to talk about?
Something important to me is leaving an impact. I want to leave a positive legacy behind me and a standard for the younger girls in my community to hold themselves to. I want to educate myself and be my best as much as possible to make a difference in people's lives.

What is your friend group like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I fit in with compassionate, humorous, and understanding people. I stand out from people who don’t respect others and those who don’t believe in themselves.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
I will never forget crying on facetime with my mom when I found out I made varsity cheer while standing in Walmart with my best friends.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?

I care deeply about making something of myself and influencing the people in my life in a way that sticks with them and brings a smile to their faces. I want to create a safe space for the people I care about and be a friend to those I don't know yet.

How did you find your photographer, Angel Stevens Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I go to school in a small town and I have gone to high school with my photographer Angel Stevens's children. She uplifted me with compliments during our shoot and made me feel confident and expressive.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would be taking a nap, then going to Target and Roosters with my best friend Anna.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Next up for me is heading to college to bask in career focused education and blossom my skill set in forensics.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up. Don’t let anyone steal your joy or confidence.

Laila Saunders – Iowa
Nomination & Photography by Kimberly Bishop
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Laila was a joy to photograph. She has an amazing personality, bubbly, sweet, fun and just confident. Laila asked to have a unique senior session filled with mud, sparklers, water and of course Laila’s spunky personality.

Picture
Photography by Kimberly Bishop

How did you find your photographer, Kimberly Bishop? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My wonderful photographer has been in my family for a long time. From my brothers and sisters to me. I enjoy the experiences we have during our sessions from her going in the water with me to the laughter we share in between shots. I loved how it was genuine love. She would hype me up and make me feel confident within myself.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would just like to thank my wonderful photographer for believing in me. And the magazine for giving me a chance to be featured. As a teen, I have kind of adopted this attitude that I am going to be me, regardless of what everyone around me is doing and I feel like this session captured the essence of that.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am also very involved in the school and our community. I show leadership and am inclusive in everything I do. My goal in life is to change the world step by step. I am the Vice President of the state Career Association for Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates, as well as the Chair of Inclusivity on my high school’s Exec. Team.

What are you most excited about for your senior year?
I am most excited to get our equity club started. This is a group that offers a safe place in school for students to talk about issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and more. I worked hard with some classmates last year to get it launched, including 3rd place national recognition for the project by Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), and this year we are starting it up locally. So, I'm excited to see the impact it will make at our school.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned so far?
The most important thing I learned was that in order to get what you want you must put in more work than your peers. Success isn't given, it's earned and it's not easy, but it is worth it. I have had to go out of my comfort zone to learn and grow, and when most kids my age are trying to fit in, this isn’t always an easy thing to do. I am more focused on personal growth, development, and helping other people see the important things in life, like loving each other, supporting each other, and learning about each other to create a healthy society than I am about some things my peers tend to focus on. It’s honestly been a blast being a leader and I’ve learned that paving your own way is absolutely the way to go.

Picture
Photography by Kimberly Bishop

What will you miss most about high school?
I will miss the bond and connections I made with the underclassmen. This year I made it my goal to be the person the freshman cheerleaders can look up to. Realizing I won't be there to see them grow and spread their wings makes me sad.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?
My advice is to take each day step by step. High School gets crazy and overwhelming at times and it’s ok to take a step back and breathe. Also, I’d like underclassmen to know that not everyone isnt your friend and that's ok. Your energy is better spent on people that share the same goals and values but that doesn’t mean you can’t be nice to everyone. Kindness goes a long way, but drama keeps you stuck. Because we don’t know what people go through behind closed doors, it’s better just to show kindness. The last thing is to know your worth and use your voice to speak up about things you care about. One of the ways I plan to change the world is to create spaces for youth to speak up. Sometimes it takes empowerment and I want to empower not only underclassmen but all young people.

What is your leadership style?
I believe every situation is made for a different type of leadership but the style that suits me the best is transformational. Transformational focuses on the future, change and people. If something isn’t working well, or if new ideas are needed, my leadership style says “let’s get to work on that.” I don’t think the way things have always been done needs to be the way they continue to be done, and so I’m ready to use all the years I have ahead of me to make both big and small changes in all the spaces I enter.

What leadership style do you admire most in others?
I admire participative leadership style because it's hard for some people to listen to other options especially when they disagree and still involve them in the decision-making processes. Leadership can’t happen alone, so I admire when leaders involve people will all different roles and opinions.

What are your roles and responsibilities as VP of the state Career Association for Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates?
My responsibility is to be the voice of all the students in iJAG. Organizations that help kids are still run by adults, so I get to bring the student perspective to the people in charge. I'm also responsible to speak on behalf of the students of IJAG when it comes to talking to businesses, senators, mayors and legislators, and CEOs. It’s important that adults hear our stories loud and clear because we’re going to be their constituents and employees.

Picture
Photography by Kimberly Bishop

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk about equity and equality forever. Even though its 2023, sometimes people aren’t willing to have open and honest conversations about these topics and I really believe that they are necessary. I was part of a L.O.V.E project (Lifting Our Voices for Equity) for iJAG (Iowa Jobs for Americas Graduates) at school. The project gave me the opportunity to compete at a state and national level. We competed in Florida and placed 3rd in nationals with the L.O.V.E project. This project happened because I was part of a group who recognized a problem that wasn’t being addressed, and we worked really hard to ensure that students in schools have ways to speak up when they need to.

What does the Inclusivity on the Hempstead Group do and why do you love being in this group?
We make sure every event is equitable for everyone at our school no matter your situation. Sometimes, students can’t attend games or dances because they don’t have transportation or resources and that’s one of the ways I want to change the world. I love being a part of this group because it gives me a chance to help others.

What do you do as a Chair on the Exec Team?
I’m chair of inclusivity and I overview all events making sure it is suitable for every student at Hempstead. For example, we had a school parade, so we provided trolleys for those who wanted to come but didn’t have transportation.

What has been your favorite accomplishment participating in this group?
My favorite accomplishment so far in exec was the outcome of homecoming. We made it enjoyable for everyone and had a great outcome. Lots of people stayed later than they usually would, and it was just wonderful to see everyone bond at our school throughout the week. Feeling connected to people and places, like school, is really important for young people to be healthy and successful and having an inclusive homecoming was really powerful.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You probably wouldn’t find me, but I would be driving around listening to music. If I wasn’t driving around, I’d probably be at the park or going on an adventure with my nieces and nephews. Spending time with them and being a good example to them is really important to me.

Picture
Photography by Kimberly Bishop

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?

I'm really excited about a trip I am taking in November. I'm going to Washington D.C. for the second time with my fellow iJAG officers. I get to spend the whole week there and during my trip I get to go on tours and talk to legislators.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to take all the opportunities given to you no matter how impossible they seem. Because one of them could change your life forever. Also go into everyday with a positive attitude and a successful mindset.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I will be fresh out of college, I plan to be working at my dream job. It's hard to say what exactly it is now because I am still looking for the perfect job for me. But I plan to either have a home or save up for a house in South Carolina.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity out of school would be fishing. I love to sit back with a pole in the water as I start small talk with my friends as we wait for a bite.

3 Things on your bucket list
The first thing on my bucket list would be to travel the world. That’s the one thing I won’t be able to cross off because it’s a lifetime thing I want to do. The next thing would be building my own house, and the third thing would be skydiving.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Steve Harvey inspiring because I learned a lot from him. I listen to his motivational videos every day and he really motivates me on the days I feel like giving up.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
My ambition and passion when it comes to things I care about and want to achieve makes me a good role model. This last year I have had people of all ages come up to me and say they aspire to be like me.

Samantha Zinck

Picture

Samantha Zinck - Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Samantha continuously inspires everyone around her. She has several health conditions and severe dyslexia, but she doesn’t let that define who she is as a person or affect her performance as a student. In fact, her struggles have made her a stronger, more independent young woman. She worked hard to be in the top 10% of her graduating class and to be accepted into Phi Theta Kappa, The National Honor Society, and The Science National Honor Society. Her goal is to become a specialized PT to help children with chronic illnesses. Sam epitomizes the saying, "If there is a will, there is a way."

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What do you want people to know about your health conditions?
Most of my medical conditions are genetic, meaning not matter what I eat, say, or do I will still have them. The assumption that a person is able to cure an autoimmune disease is in fact false, however, people are able to put the disease in what is called remission. This means that the disease lies dormant in your body, but is able to at any point “wake up” at any given point to wreak havoc just because it can. I did not wake up and decide to have an autoimmune disease, but rather I wake up every day deciding to live with what the world has given me.

What do you wish people knew about dyslexia?
Dyslexia is not an intellectual deficit, and many people with dyslexia such as Albert Einstein have average to above average intelligence. Dyslexics will often have strengths in areas that are not related to reading, such as strengths in math, or even social studies when it comes to the timeline of events. Dyslexia comes in different forms, some people that have it are verbally gifted while others are not, others may have poor fluency, but can comprehend well. Just because someone doesn’t present as a “normal” dyslexic doesn’t mean that they don’t have it.

What are your favorite ways to study to stay on top?
I will be honest I used to hate studying, so for the first year of high school I did the bare minimum. However, I have found that the most effective way of studying for me is going to a public place. Going into a public place allows me to not only enjoy what I am doing but also allows me to set goals for each study session. These goals can range from not being able to go home until I complete a certain number of assignments, too, trying to complete as many assignments as I can within a certain time frame.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

Why did you choose specialized PT to help children with chronic illnesses and what message do you hope you can pass on to these children?
My passion for this career has to do with my own experiences. Walking into PT for me was dreaded because, I felt judged and unheard. Each PT felt as though I should be “healthy” as I was young, but that is not the case. It wasn’t until I found my POTS PT that I get heard and valued. Her ability to understand my struggles and understand that I would have bad days made a huge difference in my life. The message I hope to send to the kids like me is that they aren’t alone, they are valued and heard.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
The thing I am most looking forward to senior year is probably finding out what colleges I got excepted too. My dream school is University of Chicago, so getting into this school would honestly be so exciting! Which schools I am able to get into will basically determine where I live for the next 4-6 years of my life, and potentially attend graduate school.

What advice do you have for the underclassmen?
One piece of advice I wish I would have been told as an underclassman is to put you first. By the end of sophomore year, I felt so burned out as I put school before my health. My grades at that point no longer reflected my academic ability, rather my inability to take care of my body. After almost 4 years in high school and taking over 40+ college credit hours I learned the less I focused on my overall grades and more on my overall health the better I preformed; I was able to study effectively and my grade improved dramatically.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I like to volunteer with the cats every Sunday at the Abandoned Animal Rescue. In fact, I enjoy it so much that I even volunteer during my school breaks. It definitely isn't glamorous, and you can get dirty after all of the cage cleaning, scooping boxes, sweeping, and mopping, but it's worth it. I also get the chance to snuggle and play with the cats and kittens...this is not only fun, but the snuggle and playtime is essential because that helps to socialize the cats and kittens, which helps them find a forever home.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am very excited to start college. I am looking forward to the entire experience: meeting new people, possibly exploring a new town, and taking classes that interest me and that will help me reach my goals.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My passion for helping kids with chronic illness stems from years of being unheard and misunderstood by multiple physical therapists. I have POTS (Post Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and Ankylosing Spondylitis, so my body would often shut down if I was pushed too hard. Most physical therapists thought young equalled healthy and resilient, but that wasn't me. When I finally found a PT who specialized with POTS and autoimmune diseases, my body began to respond and I could do more. I finally felt heard and understood, and to me, that was everything. I'd like to share that with others.

How did you find your photographer, Angie Read Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found Angie through friends who also participated in her Power Team. It sounded like a wonderful opportunity and I decided to reach out to her. Angie is very sweet and she is so much fun to work with. It was unbelievably hot during one of our outdoor shoots and there were tons of mosquitos. Angie made sure I was heavily covered in bug spray (I am allergic to mosquito bites) and she moved as quickly and efficiently as possible (without compromising her work) to get me out of the heat and away from the mosquitos.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day you would most likely find me volunteering at Abandoned Animal Rescue. I absolutely love helping out all the animals, wether that be the cats or the dogs! All animals deserve a loving environment were they can thrive. Part of my job as a volunteer is to make sure each animal gets the proper care and attention it needs, so it is always heartwarming to see shy and abused animals trusting and playing with people!

What do you want people to know about suicidal thoughts and borderline personality disorder?

I want people to know that there is a universe in between being aware of the existence of pain and knowing pain. You are not inadequate or inferior just because your pain and struggles make life more difficult. BPD and having suicidal thoughts are not a choice, and we try our best even if our best varies from day to day.

When did you start writing poems? Tell us about one of your favorites.
I first started writing poetry in 7th grade. What prompted my first poem was the heartache I felt toward a boy, and writing about it helped me through it. One of my favorite poems happens to be one of my darkest poems, it was a poem about a trauma of mine, during the process of writing that poem. I felt I was able to articulate feelings I wasn’t even aware of and turn them into dancing metaphors. The poem is so special to me because I turned something that tore me apart into something beautiful.

What was your vision for your senior photo shoot to say about you?
I wanted my senior photos to capture my energy, I wanted my photos to show individuality and creativity with a gentle confidence in an environment that represents my aesthetic.

How did you find your photographer, Shannon Kathleen Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer was my cousin, I love that she went along with my vision and brought it to life in a beautiful way. She was so fun to work with, honored what I had in mind, and never steered me to another path.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?

No risk, no story. It's okay to be a little impulsive (while staying safe, obviously). You don’t want to be older thinking before bed “I wonder what could’ve happened”.

How would your friends describe you?
My friends have described me as impulsive, wise, easy to talk to, creative, and fun to have conversations with.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
My friends and I like to go on drives and listen to music. We like to just sit around and talk, and some of my friends and I paint and do crafts. I love to watch movies with my friends and go down the rabbit hole telling stories about our lives.

Picture
Photography by Shannon Kathleen Photography

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?

I could talk about God, my testimonies, and scripture forever. I love talking about book ideas, movie ideas, or dreams that I've had at night. I could talk about books I've read for hours. I love talking about psychology, asking philosophical questions, and analyzing songs or past events. I just love talking!

What has the bible taught you?
So much. Reading the bible has completely changed the way I look at life and at people. It has taught me how to live life in a kind and gentle way. It has taught me how to live with more peace.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me sitting on my bed reading a book with as much natural light possible, and drinking chai as a candle is burning.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to listen, I love hearing people talk about everyday things but I especially love listening to people talk about heavy topics or things that are on their mind, I want to be an outlet for others so that they know they have someone who will listen.

Katie Culbertson – Alabama
Nominations & Photography by Karen Askins Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Katie Culbertson watched Simon Biles leave the Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental health due to "twisties". Katie flourished in gymnastics until forced to battle her own twisties. Years later, Katie stared at the diving platform for the first time. "Nervousness and excitement feel the same" she repeated. Finishing top ten in the Alabama dive meet six months later, she knew the advice of trying something new supplied confidence. Her gymnastics skills improved along with her mental health. This experience inspired Katie to pursue nursing and mentor struggling teens to offer them hope.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?

If I had nothing to do all day and all day to do it, you would most likely find me at my sorority house. I am an Alpha Gamma Delta at the University of Alabama and love to hang out in the house with all my friends either doing homework, eating a meal, or just talking with anyone else there.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Something that is coming up doon that I am super excited about is Nursing school. In the next year, I will be applying to join the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama. I am so excited to kickstart my career as a nurse in the program and cannot wait to be able to use my skills learned in this college to help people in need.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Karen Askins is a professional freelance photographer and luckily lives in my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. I met Karen when she took our cheerleading pictures in 7th grade and I knew I wanted her photos as a senior. She was fun, let me be myself, and we laughed the whole session. I was encouraged to think out of the box with my outfit choices, which I loved. I remember it was so windy that day but she used that wind to capture unique movement and made me feel so comfortable.

Tell us about your gymnastics career. When did you get started and where are you at with it now?
My gymnastics career started when I was about two years old, and I discovered my love for tumbling. Ever since then I was so passionate about cheerleading and constantly wanted to be in the gym practicing my skills. Currently I am no longer cheering, however, the lessons I learned from this sport will forever be with me and still to this day help me achieve goals in my life.

What do you love most about gymnastics?
What I love most about gymnastics was the connections I was able to form while competing this sport. I met some of my closest friends through gymnastics and will forever be grateful for my time with, them and the sport that I loved to do.

Picture
Photography by Karen Askins Photography

What do you wish others understood about the "twisties"?
I wish that people understood that the “twisties” are more common than most people think and that it is not something to be embarrassed about. A lot of gymnastics and tumbling coaches see students with this issue every day and most know very effective ways to help athletes overcome this fear.

What is your favorite accomplishment from gymnastics?
My favorite accomplishment from gymnastics was when my senior year cheerleading team placed 6th at nationals. This was the first time in many years that our varsity team had placed in the top 10 and I was so grateful to be a part of the amazing team and be able to walk off the mat after we hit our routine more than proud of what we had performed. This memory will always be so special to me since it was my last time competing with my high school team.

What is your dive team like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
Being able to be a part of my school’s dive team was an amazing experience. It was such a special team to be included on because everyone was new to me when I first joined, and I got to meet so many new people during my time on the team. Even though I did not know anyone diving with me, I still felt as if I fit in with everyone because of how welcoming the people around me were. I will always be grateful for this experience and still hold these friendships close to my heart.

What is your favorite memory with your dive team?
My favorite memory with my dive team is when I placed 9th at our state meet. I truly could not have accomplished this without the people on my team Placing top 10 at State will always be something I am super grateful and proud of.

What has your freshman year of college been like so far?

My freshman year of college has been a hard adjustment to manage however it has been an overall wonderful experience. Being in a sorority at the University of Alabama has been such a blessing and has given me many opportunities to meet new people and get involved around our campus. I have loved the University so far and cannot wait for the semesters to come!

What has surprised you most about college vs high school?
What has surprised me most about college vs high school is the freedom that is available to me in college. It is a hard adjustment being without my parents every day and not seeing some of my high school friends, however, being able to be more independent has truly helped me grow as a better person and to figure out what I want to do with my life.

What advice do you have for this year's high school seniors?
The advice I would give to current high school seniors is to soak in every moment that they have these next few months and to truly appreciate everything around them. Senior year was one of the best years of my life and I would not trade the memories I made for anything. I would tell seniors right now to spend time with the people that you truly love in your life especially if you are leaving them next year when your set off for college.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
The courage it took for Simone Biles to admit she had to focus on herself and withdraw from the largest stage in the world is inspires me to put my health first. Teens struggle in everyday life, making friends, social media, and fitting in can be stressors. Simply being with family, taking a walk or getting extra sleep is so important to our happiness. Most teens today are embarrassed to admit their struggles or do not have resources. I am so excited to use my nursing skills to inspire teens to stay healthy.

What else would you like to talk about?
My grandfather was diagnosed with lymphoma 6 years ago on Christmas Eve. His positive energy was contagious as we opened presents and celebrated. His faith never wavered through 1 full year of extreme chemotherapy. His lymphoma has returned stronger this year and he continues to fight. With the help of my classmates and countless fundraisers we raised over $300,000 in 6 months for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Lighting luminaries for my Papa's fight is something I’ll remember forever.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Children and young adults with special needs are more than special - they are the souls on this earth with the most heart and innocent happiness. I have several friends with special needs siblings and they are some of my favorite people to spend time with. I love working in the community and am looking forward to clubs in college to spend more time with some new friends.
These friends are different than me, and that is what I love the most! Being different should be normalized and celebrated!

Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: MacKenzie Mainer A graduating Engineering Senior with a 4.30 GPA, Mackenzie is a Leadership student who competes on a Level 6 Worlds Team for All Star Cheerleading and is a Regional Champion Waterskier. MacKenzie suffered two broken ankles and ultimately double surgery while maintaining her position as Captain on the Worlds team. Soon after recovering, she lost her Dad in a tragic accident. I nominate her as an inspiring team!

How do you balance & organize a heavy school load while maintaining such a high gpa and busy extra curriculars?

Something that separates me from others is my work ethic and commitment to finish what I aim to accomplish. If I have a homework assignment due the morning after a long practice, I am willing to stay awake for however long it takes in order to complete it. I recognize when I need to prioritize one activity over another, although it is difficult to sometimes let go of being social. I see the importance of everything I do, and I know it is worth it to be able to do the things I love while simultaneously preparing for the future.

What is your favorite subject this year vs your hardest and why?
My favorite subject this year would be my Engineering Design B class because it prepares me and teaches me about my dream career. I spend my time each day designing my dream home, so what’s not to love about that, especially considering that this is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. My hardest class would have to be AP Calculus BC. Although I do really love my teacher and the class environment, the advanced math curriculum is difficult to understand and takes a lot of effort and studying to excel.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned so far this year?
The most interesting thing I have learned so far this year would definitely be everything I’ve been taught in my Engineering Design B class, which focuses on architecture. I’ve learned about all the different architectural styles and also how to use the computer program to build the entirety of houses.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started sideline cheer in elementary school when my brother played football and I would watch the cheerleaders. So, we signed me up for cheer, but I despised cheering on the football team, instead preferring the one competition at the end of every year, so we finally decided to make the switch to All Star cheer near the end of my 6th grade year. I’ve done it ever since, climbing up the levels until I reached level 6 (the highest level) my freshman year. I love cheerleading because of the hard work, leadership, and mental lessons I’ve learned.

What is your team like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My cheer team, Firestorm, is composed of twenty-two strong, determined, hardworking, and passionate athletes that share a love for this crazy sport. We’re all very different, but we share the same desire to be the best, and we all offer different benefits to the team environment that helped us accomplish our dreams. I truly consider my coaches and my teammates my family. In fact, after winning worlds, my coach said I am “the heart of the team”. I'm proud to hold that title and to be able to say I am a World Champion with my best friends.

What was Worlds like?
Hundreds of senior level 6 teams from across the world travel to Orlando, Florida to compete on the largest stage in cheerleading and possibly take home a Globe from the All Star Cheerleading World Championships. Worlds is different from any other competition because anything can happen and you’re surrounded by the best of the best. All the blood, sweat, and tears of the past year lead up to two minutes and thirty seconds on that mat. I’ve competed at Worlds 3 times, taken the stage 8 times and I’m proud to say I can finally call myself a World Champion.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?

Something I feel passionate about is my sport, All Star Cheerleading. There are many people who don't consider cheer a sport, but what I do is completely different from what most people envision when they think "cheer." I don't yell on the sidelines, I compete in high intensity routines with tumbling and stunts that draw awe from everyone in the crowd. The blood, sweat, and tears I have put into cheerleading rival those of UFC fighters or NFL players. Although it is something difficult to understand unless you experience it, the subject of cheer is something I can talk about forever.

Your main image shows you on a boat. Tell us about your favorite water activities.
My other main sport is competitive water skiing. My parents grew up waterskiing and actually met on the dock at our lake, Bell Acqua. I learned to ski ever since I could walk and I plan to ski competitively in college. I compete in jump, slalom, and trick events, but slalom is my favorite. I won the 2021 and 2023 Western Regionals in Girls 5 slalom, and I’m ranked 10th in the nation. Waterskiing has been such a huge part of my life and I am so excited to continue at the collegiate level.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination covers most of my inspiring aspects, but lacks the full description of everything I have been through. Starting with my dad, he was my best friend and mentor, so losing him affected me in more ways than I can explain, but I've persevered through the struggles, emerging as a more grateful and mature person because of it. I would also consider my cheer journey inspirational because of the blood, sweat, and tears that helped me reach my ultimate goal, winning the World Championships and being crowned a World Champion with my team.

What is a favorite memory with your dad that you will never forget?
My favorite memories with my dad involve us traveling the nation for water ski tournaments, but the one that stands out in my memory was the 2021 Western Regionals in Denver, Colorado. This was where I won my first regionals and had so much fun making memories with him. Toward the end of the trip, we drove across the state border to Cheyanne, Wyoming for the Cheyanne Frontier Days Rodeo to go to the Thomas Rhett concert. I’ve been to many concerts and tournaments, but this was hands down my favorite because I got to experience it with my dad.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
A family tradition that I hope never ends is snow skiing at Kirkwood Mountain near Lake Tahoe. My family owns a slope-side condo and we spend as many weekends as possible every winter in our favorite place. My brothers and I grew up on the Expedition Kirkwood ski team and we all skied on the Kirkwood Freeride team as teenagers. My best memories with my family are the ones spent on the mountain. Skiing is how my brothers, my mom, my dad, and me bond, and I hope we have the opportunity to keep doing it forever.

What else would you like to talk about?
My goals for the future include attending either University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University to major in Architecture/Architectural Engineering. As a young girl, I always felt confident in my ability to achieve anything I wished, approaching school and athletics with the same mindset. In my high school engineering classes, I am one of three girls in the whole class, but that does nothing to discourage me as I remain one of the top students in the class. I'm quite excited for my dream career as a woman in STEM.

Picture
Photography by Patricia Mainer

What are you hoping to do with your degree in Architecture/Architectural Engineering?

I dream of becoming an architect versed in both structure and design so I can create custom homes that double as works of art as well as places for families and friends to make memories. If I can design something to be enjoyed by families such as my own, with a love for the outdoors and adventurous sports, then I know I can make a positive impact on many lives in the same way that these places have for me.

How did you find your photographer, Angie Lane Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom previously owned a wedding design business and formed a relationship with Angie Lane, our photographer. My family has used her ever since for Christmas cards, family photos, my brothers' senior portraits, fun photoshoots, and of course my own senior portraits. I love working with Angie because she makes the experience so much fun. I feel so comfortable with Angie and I have complete trust in her talent. My favorite part of working with Angie is seeing her passion and the way she makes me feel genuinely beautiful when she photographs me!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am most excited for my senior year and to graduate high school and go to college. I’m nearing the end of my high school career and I am so excited for what awaits me, wherever that may be. Although I am trying my best to embrace these final days at home and truly soak it in, I just can’t help but feel excited for everything that’s to come.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever accomplished was enduring my double ankle reconstruction surgery in July of 2022 and coming back to my sport stronger than ever, then finally going on to win the Cheerleading Worlds. I did it with the help of my teammates and my family, who always supported me and pushed me to reach my dreams.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to trust the process. There is a plan for you and everything will come together and be okay, all you have to do is continue working hard and what’s meant to be will come.

She plans to attend Mississippi State to pursue a degree is pre-occupational therapy. Her goal is to work with the children at St. Jude or Lebonheur. What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I am a member of Christ Presbyterian church where I have always enjoyed working with the children's ministry and VBS. I have always wanted to work with children and make a positive impact in their lives. I enjoy working with the younger cheerleaders as they grow in the sport. I try hard to be a positive role model.

What else would you like to talk about?
As a child, I suffered from severe ear infections that greatly impacted my ability to hear and recognize sounds. This made it difficult for me to learn to read and spell. My parents worked diligently with me to overcome that early-learning setback so that I could develop good study habits that serve me well to this day. I do believe that more research needs to go into when tubes are inserted and what the impact of not doing that at the proper time does to a child's development.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel passionate about open adoption like the one I am lucky enough to be a part of. I was adopted as an infant, as was my biological sister. My parents have always told me my birth story, I know my birth family and all of my medical history. Through the camps help each summer by the agency, I was able to make life-long best friends all across the country that share the same experiences. I feel that all adoptions should be open for the well-being of the adoptee.

How did you find your photographer, Cindy B. Thymius Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Cindy has been a friend of the family since I was three and she photographed my sister and me. She knows us well, is fun when we have a photography session, knows how to make me comfortable and I think get the very best pictures.

I am looking forward to my last year of high school experiences and making life long memories.

This year I am taking a class called Life Skills and I have learned about how to do taxes and information about different types of insurances.

What has been your favorite service project for the NHS?
My favorite service project for NHS is always the grandparents breakfast. I love seeing all the grandparents come and hangout with their grandkids for the day while they enjoy breakfast and music.

Tell us about your favorite activity in the Ecology Club.
I love when we go on our annual trip during fall break. We usually go to Land Between the Lakes but this year we are going to Loan Oaks. I always enjoy spending time with everyone and doing fun activities in nature.

What is Interact Club and what are your goals there?
Interact Club is our school doing projects to help our community and school. Every month we try to do a project that will help others in some way whether that is by making their day or by doing a task for them.

What are your roles and responsibilities as Captain of the varsity cheer squad?
I have been cheering all four years of high school so I was given the honor to be captain. As captain I am in charge of deciding on uniforms, picking dances, teaching all new material and also coaching middle school cheer (which might be my favorite part). But, I could not do it alone I have a great squad and coaches that are always willing to help!

What do you love most about being the president of the Pep Club?
I love being able to help pick the themes for the games, making banners/ poster, and also to help pick out fun games/activities for pep rallies to get the high schoolers and little kids excited for games!!

What are you doing now to help plan for your degree in pre-occupational therapy?
I have talked to many OTs and this Christmas break I plan to shadow at the NHC in our town.

Why is St. Jude so important to you?
I have known many people that have been sent there and gotten the helped they need which has always made me so happy. I love kids and want to be able to help them and I love how St. Jude does not cost the family anything through the hard times.

What do you wish others knew about growing up on a farm?
All the things that go into growing our food and taking care of animals. I think it shows you how beautiful our world really is.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would probably find me with my mini golden doodle Winnie either out doing something or outside.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am excited about going to college and making new memories and new experiences.

Mackenzie Scanlan – Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by Amy Weathers Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Mackenzie is an inspiration to many people in her community, as she was the very first patient at the OLOL Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge. Mackenzie doesn't give up or let things hold her back. She runs cross country and track, and she is a member of multiple clubs. And she bakes THE BEST chocolate chip cookies! I can't wait to see what she does next!

Tell us about your cross country and track careers. Which came first and where are you at with them now?
Cross Country came first I started running in 5th grade. I placed 2nd in state and 6th in parish. I then ran track and competed in hurdles and the 800. I placed 5th for the 800. I then did other sports and joined Cross Country again my Sophomore year. I had gotten sick and am training now to get better. My mile in 5th grade was 5 minutes flat and now it is about 7 minutes. I can't do what I used to do but I will get better through time and practice.

How are your cross country and track teams/teammates different? What is a favorite memory with each?
Everyone on the team broth Cross Country and Track all have different personality's. They all have different strengths and weaknesses but they work together to get better. They always pump up each other and encourage each other to do their absolute best. I am very grateful to have such wonderful teammate's that encourage me and push me to my absolute max. My favorite memory of Cross Country would be the LSU practice because it's such a beautiful place to run and it's even better to run there with all of my friends. My favorite memory of track would be watching all of the new members growing both mentally and physically and becoming better.

What is a favorite accomplishment from each?

How have these clubs shaped you as a person?
These clubs have opened my eyes to the dangerous world we have and how the decisions I make can affect the people around me and how I can affect myself. What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel most passionate about the medical field. I love to talk about the mysteries of the human body and why it works the way it does. I'm most intrigued with the gastrointestinal system because there is still so much unknown information about it.

How did you find your photographer, Amy Weathers Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?

I found my photographer through a friend of mine at school. My experience was pretty amazing. I loved getting to be a model for the day. I loved getting to be in new environments and trying new poses.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would be out in nature like a park, hiking, or riding horses (Trail riding).

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited to graduate and go to college. I want to be like the nurses who I had the joy of experiencing. I want to create a positive image on the children I will help.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished would be beating my disease. I went through multiple rounds of different medicines, blood transfusions, and also hospital stays. I was able to beat it not just by the surgery but the amazing family and doctors I was surrounded by. I never would have beaten it if I didn't have the loving people guiding me through it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say never give up. The strength we are given in life are from the lessons we learn. Everything happens for a reason. So why sit there and do nothing when you can make a difference. You are capable of anything and everything you put your mind to and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself in college with an apartment having a part time job in a hospital helping children who have gone through what I have, I want to give then the same guidance I had.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love baking and creating things with food. I got inspiration from a youtuber named Rosanna Pansino. She makes beautiful cakes and goods. I wanted to learn how to make those to share with people.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I don't really have a hidden talent I am a pretty open person.

3 Things on your bucket list
To work with my surgeon, to skydive, and to own a ranch one day.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my doctor inspiring. She was only a med student when I met her but she was with me throughout everything. She never failed to make me smile or to make me happy about getting to go to the hospital to see her. She's truly an inspiration to all of her patients.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I have experienced many troubling things in life but I know may people would give up and lose hope. I have lost hope a couple of times but I never gave up. I feel like there's no point in sitting down and doing nothing when I can make a difference. I have the ultimate goal in life to help people whether that be in an office or out on the streets. I feel people need positivity to overrule the negativity. I feel people need strength not weakness.

Isabelle Ijams - Arizona
Nomination by Michelle Ijams
Photography by Tia Benson
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Isabelle Ijams is inspiring because she doesn't let anything stop her from achieving her dreams, even a life threatening disease. Isabelle was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic life threatening disease that affects the lungs and other organs. She does treatments daily and takes a ton of medicines to just stay healthy. She has chosen to be in clinical trials for the past 4 years to help other people with cf. Even through the over 100+ hours in the hospital, blood draws and many tests, she still continues to smile and help those, including her sister, Aria, fight cystic fibrosis.

What do you wish people knew about having cystic fibrosis other than the medical terms?
Having cystic fibrosis is not fun. It is exhausting and difficult. Fighting to breathe everyday wears down the body and mind. The daily treatments include nebulized medicines and 30 minutes using a vest, that shakes and squeezes my body to get mucus out. I take many pills daily and all this when I am healthy. When I am sick, I have to triple my treatments which can take over an hour and a half a day.

Tell us about the clinical trials you've participated in.
The clinical trials are something that I do to help researchers find a cure for this disease. I don't want any other kids to have to suffer. The clinical trials are usually 6 hours long with appointments every week to two weeks to monthly. I have an EEG, pulmonary lung function test, sweat test, and they take lots of blood work. It is a long day but I know that I am helping researchers and the cystic fibrosis community.

What else would you like to talk about?
Having cystic fibrosis is very isolating because we cannot be around others with cf for fear of spreading infections that could be deadly. But this summer I was nominated to be the Southern Arizona Teen Advocate for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I was able to tell my story to Senators and Governors from California and Arizona. It was an amazing experience and even more amazing because I got to meet other teens with cf on Zoom.

What is the hardest part of having CF and how do you get past it?
The hardest part of having CF is the unknown. We don't know how the newest medicine or treatment will work or if there will be side effects. We don't know if I will get seriously sick and end up in the hospital and for how long. We don't know if there is a person with CF sitting next to us at the movie theater that could make me really sick. The unknown is hard but living my life to the fullest everyday grateful and blessed is very easy.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
All my life I have been fighting just to breathe every day. Being born with a genetic life threatening disease is devastating but I have fully accepted it and vow not to let it run my life. I have been in 4 clinical trials in the past 5 years. Over 100 6-hour appointments at the hospital, over 100 blood draws, and other tests. It is hard mentally and physically. But I do it for everyone who has cystic fibrosis but most importantly, I do it for my younger sister so she doesn’t have to fight so hard to breathe.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about dance. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old and really credit dance to keeping my lungs healthy and strong. Dancing and performing is one of my favorite things to do. I am on my high school pom team and dance competitively at my studio. I have been trained in ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, hip hop, ballroom, acro, and musical theater. Being up on stage or in front of a football crowd is my happy place. A place where I can express my emotions and forget about everything else.

What is your dance studio like and what do you love most about being in it?
My dance studio is my second home and everyone who dances there is family. There is so much love, support and respect between everyone. My director, Brendan Kellam, pushes me to be the best dancer I can be and is one of my best friends.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
My favorite accomplishment from dance was at a local competition this past year. I had some devastating news an hour before going on for my solo. I focused and went out on stage and danced my heart out. I left the sadness and anger from the bad news on the stage. I ended up with the highest award at the competition!

How did you find your photographer, Tia Benson? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My amazing photographer is my cousin, Tia Benson. She flew out from Minneapolis and surprised me with a senior photo shoot. I had no clue and ended up screaming and crying with excitement. Having my cousin, who is like my best friend, take these photos was so special. We laughed so much and had the best time!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am hoping to be attending the University of Arizona as a dance major. I am so excited to take my dancing to the next level and learn and grow at the university.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself graduating from college and starting my own dance studio with my sister. I want to travel the world with my best friends.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to Paris
Open my own dance studio
Dance on stage with a musician during a concert

Kaiden Mashak – Georgia
Nomination by Michelle Mashak
Photography by Amy Honea Photography
Issue 72 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kaiden Mashak is an amazing and inspiring teen. He was born a premature fighter. At age 4 he was diagnosed with Asperger's and despite many struggles, he never let his diagnosis be his excuse. Kaiden worked hard to overcome his challenges. He then started volunteering with students on the Autism spectrum, serving with children at church and dedicating his time to help at our churches food pantry serving the less fortunate in our community. Kaiden is always smiling and looks for the best in everyone. His kind heart and giving soul make him a giant teddy bear!

What challenges have you had with Asperger's and how have you overcome them?
For as long as I can remember I have struggled with crowds and loud noises. I also struggle with learning as I can get easily distracted by things no one else seems to notice. Once I got an actual diagnosis my mom, doctors and teachers went to work getting me plugged into therapies for coping, creating an IEP that allowed me to have a quiet place for testing and excusing me from attending things like pep rallies. I did a TON of therapy from ages 4-14 helping me understand things like sarcasm and idioms. These improved my speech, taught me focus strategies and more!

What do you wish others knew about Asperger?
We really want to be included. We are different but not less. And most people with Asperger's/Autism are extremely intelligent we just have a harder time processing things.

What are your roles and responsibilities volunteering for students on the Autism spectrum?
My main role is comfort. I see what they see, I hear what they hear so when I notice they are starting to get uncomfortable or may have a melt down, I start implementing the tricks I learned during years of therapy to comfort and/or distract them. If all else fails, I am large enough to hold them and protect them while they flail about to protect them from getting hurt.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I try to lead with understanding and patience but also being firm in expectations.

What do you love doing most with the children at your church?
I love comforting the children that may be dealing with separation anxiety. Children are entitled to bad days, same as adults and sometimes they just need to be comforted and reminded that their parents will be back soon to pick them up. I also love helping the main teachers in our class. They appreciate the help!

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

What do you love most about serving in your church food pantry?
The thing I love most is meeting the people. They are so grateful and appreciative of the help. A lot of our volunteers tend to be a little older too, so I enjoy being able to lift and move the heavier items for our volunteers so they don't hurt their backs.

What is your family like and how do you fit in? How do you stand out?
My family is very outgoing and very amazing. I love and cherish my family. I fit in as the strong and caring child of the family and I stand out from my slim and smart brother, while I am muscular and big. Then I have my beautiful and great mom!

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
I will never forget the time we went to Savannah for a ComicCon. It was such a great and fun experience. I enjoyed sharing something I love with my family and best friend, Joshua.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
Every year on St. Patrick's Day our extended family gets together for food and fellowship. We eat, play games, take funny pictures. I love just having fun talking to my family and being with them.

What are you most looking forward to in your senior year?
I am looking forward to seeing the smiling faces of my family and friends as I graduate and take on the world, ready for a whole new set of challenges.

What advice do you have for underclassmen?
To make sure to ask for help from teachers and fellow classmates so they won't feel overwhelmed with the amount of work given. Most teachers will work with you and try their hardest to help you succeed but you have to communicate with them.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think the way that I perceive other people's problems makes me a unique candidate. I am more understanding and calm when dealing with others who may not be able to verbalize what’s wrong with them.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would also enjoy talking about my love for animals and the unique bond I seemingly form with most animals I come into contact with.

Picture
Photography by Michelle Mashak

Tell us most about your love for animals.
I love how animals look and seem to be in a world of their own; they can be quite mysterious. I wish I knew what they were thinking about so I can understand why they do what they do.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about helping people. I grew up wanting to be a superhero and that hasn’t really changed. I no longer want to fly around but I still want to listen and help people where needed.

How did you find your photographer, Amy Honea Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
That she listened to my ideas, like the picture of me with the rubber ducks! My mom found our photographer on Facebook. She had done photos for one of her friends from church so my mom started following Amy just waiting for me to become a senior. Our experience with Mrs. Amy has been phenomenal. Amy is very open minded about my suggestions for photo shoots. While shooting she is very friendly and easy to talk to and communicate with!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would definitely find me at home, enjoying a relaxing, lazy day with my dog

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I have been selected by the Georgia High School High Tech Program that provides youths with disabilities a link to academic and career-development experiences that enable us to successfully meet the workforce demands we will be facing after graduation. I have completed intake and am scheduled to start my first job in a few weeks!
