Liliana Huston - Indiana
Nomination & Photography by @mitbykimberly
Issue 102 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Liliana Huston is an inspiring teen because through my lens, I see more than achievement; I witness quiet dedication shaping character. For five years she has committed to diving, pairing discipline with grace, while pouring equal heart into theater production, art communities, and service. She builds, paints, leads, and uplifts, whether on a set or beside younger athletes. In coaching middle school divers, she offers patience and knowledge, sparking confidence that lingers long after practice. Her generosity extends into volunteer work, leaving every space brighter. Liliana’s inner beauty is a steady current that draws others to rise, believe, and begin.

What other inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you, not mentioned in your nomination, would you like readers to know about?
At RipFest Dive Camp, the connections to others who love the sport like me and the opportunity to dive outside and do dryland training with different coaches means a lot to me. I have gone for 4 years now, making friends I have gone to camp with multiple times now.
I received the Superintendents Award and a Best of Category Award for some of my art in the district art show. I also had the honor of making an ink drawing of the school for my Principal that is retiring.

What has it meant to you to build friendships through diving over the years?
The friendships I have built through diving have meant the world to me. There is something special about connecting with others who love the same thing as you and have/are facing similar challenges as you. Friends I’ve made while competing in high school are always a friendly, supportive face at competitions that make it easier to just have fun. Meeting other divers at summer camp forms a close connection because we are training and doing fun activities together. It’s really fun when we get to have fun using diving skills during free time or activities, like doing flips.

How has art given you another way to express yourself outside of athletics?
I am all about the details and the little moments in life. Art serves as a unique medium where I can express an idea while incorporating smaller details that connect with each other and expand the extent of the meaning. When I make something that others enjoy seeing or find sentimental value in, it makes me feel proud of my work and what I’m capable of. That is why it was a huge opportunity when my teacher thought of me to do a drawing of the school for my Principal after I previously made an ink landscape.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
Right now, my main goal is to finish off my senior year strong while enjoying as much of it as I can. When I start college, my goal is to get involved and meet as many people as I can without worrying about everything being perfect or my expectations not being met. I want to embrace a new chapter without getting stuck up on the what-ifs and what could have been. I am working towards improving my communication and ability to make lasting connections.

What are you most excited about as you prepare to attend Purdue this fall?
I am most excited about all the new people I will get to meet. My relationships and connections with other people are extremely important to me, but sometimes it can be hard to make them. In college, most students are trying to make friends, get involved, and just talk with others just like you are. I also can’t wait to participate in different clubs and campus activities. Though there is not a diving club at Purdue, I plan to stay involved with it. There is also an architecture club that I am very interested in.

What is something you hope to learn about yourself during your college years?
During my college years, I hope I can learn more about how I interact and how others perceive me. Being aware of things like that is important for successful communication, connections, and performance.

What could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I could talk about diving for hours. I absolutely love everything about the sport. I love teaching others about the physics and mechanics behind it and the precision and mindset required to perform dives. Diving is a big deal in Indiana and my dive club has connections to Olympians and so does Purdue, the college I will be attending in the fall. The sport has become a huge part of my life, challenging me and teaching me how to regulate my mindset so I can do hard things even when I am scared.

What is one of the biggest lessons diving has taught you about overcoming fear?
When someone tells you just have to do it, you might think they don’t understand how you feel, but in reality the only way to truly overcome fear is by making a move. When doing a new dive, I have to trust my training, lead-ups, and preparation. After the first, every repetition feels less scary. It definitely takes practice and time to feel comfortable doing things despite fear. of I am still scared when I do a new dive, but I know the only way to get over that fear is to chuck it.

What do you enjoy most about coaching and encouraging younger divers?
I did karate for 7 years and had to quit in 8th grade. Something I did there was teach, so it had become natural to me to coach others. I love to see younger divers able to overcome their fears and get excited when they succeed. It also makes me personally excited when they ask me questions and want to learn more.

How do you stay mentally focused before a difficult dive or competition?
It has taken multiple years of competition for me to feel comfortable and relaxed. As I have become more comfortable with diving, I have learned to not think too hard about the things that go wrong or what others are doing. I only have to focus on myself and the next dive. I get done warming up early so I am not stressed and do not try too hard to fix things. Then, in between dives I listen to music, color, or do some other activity that keeps me from worrying about my next dive until it’s time to go.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or influencer in the past year?
In the past year, I have learned that I have the capability to bring ideas to the table and get people involved with a movement. Throughout all of my high school years I have wanted to make a mural to display in the school that represents it. We started a branch of the National Art Honor Society this year, so I brought up my desire to make a mural. As a team, we made a design that represents what our school is about and all the students in it and are in the process of painting it now!

How do you hope your mural will impact students who see it for years to come?
In the years to come, I hope that students will see the mural and feel represented. The goal of the mural is to show the things that represent our school and the biggest part of that is the students. The mural incorporates items and symbols to represent all the groups in our school.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
My photographer was the one who nominated me and something about them that means a lot to me is her ability to make anyone feel comfortable. I was nervous to do pictures at first, and even now I still feel awkward sometimes, but Kimberly always makes it fun.

Tell us about the person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
I connect with my photographer, Kimberly, through my older friends who had done their senior pictures with her. She has made doing pictures feel easy and natural for me by making it fun and working with things I would like to try out during a photoshoot. There has never been something to stress me out.

How long have you been in the model team and what do you love most about it?
My first shoot with the team was last October, 2025. It honestly still feels new to me at times but I love getting to create amazing photos with my photographer that show my personality in them.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard of Inspiring Teens Magazine from my senior photographer. Being a part of the magazine, to me, means that I have the opportunity to share my unique story and connect to others who relate to it.

How will winning a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine help you?
Winning a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine will help me to pay for college so I can get my degree without worrying about huge debt. With my major, I plan to work within the field of construction, design, and architecture. To me, the environment we live in everyday is extremely important both in how it makes us feel and functions. A scholarship will help me reach my goals to graduate with a good degree and be prepared to enter the work force so I can be a part of creating our built world.

What made you say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge, and how did you feel when you first started?
When leading into college, any chance for a scholarship is a valuable opportunity. What really interested me though was the opportunity to be showcased in a magazine and share my experiences with my friends, family, and community. I was definitely a bit overwhelmed because there was so many things to do, but the guides and suggestion resources were really helpful.

What is one moment during the challenge so far that has made you feel proud or realize you were growing - in confidence, mindset, or taking action?
I was proud that I was able to go to my local business and ask if they would be interested in sponsoring me. I definitely have a hard time talking to people in that kind of manner, but the ability to pitch yourself and your abilities are fundamental to success, so any practice doing so is helpful for me.

If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, what would you tell them?
I would tell them to just do it. Like I explained before, the only way to overcome fear is through action. There is nothing to lose by joining the challenge, only the opportunity to gain something whether that is a scholarship, leadership experience, or just life skills.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or influencer in the past year?
Hard Work and Sacrifice

• Effort Required: Success in any area—be it personal, academic, or career-related—often demands hard work. This may involve long hours, challenging tasks, or stepping out of your comfort zone.

• Making Sacrifices: You might need to give up certain comforts or leisure activities to focus on your goals, whether that’s studying for exams, training for a competition, or working extra hours.

Long-Term Rewards

• Delayed Gratification: The “good things” often refer to the benefits that come from hard work, such as achieving your dreams, gaining new skills, or building strong relationships. These rewards may not be immediate.

• Vision for the Future: The phrase also highlights the importance of having a clear vision of where you want to be in the future. This vision can motivate you to tackle difficult tasks that may seem daunting in the short term.

Resilience and Growth

• Building Character: Facing and overcoming challenges can help develop resilience, determination, and personal growth. These qualities are invaluable in all aspects of life.

• Learning from Challenges: Difficult experiences can teach important lessons, making you better equipped to handle future challenges.

Peyton Holland - Arkansas
Nomination by Emily Holman
Photography by Angela Holland
Issue 102 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: My name is Peyton Holland and I pride myself on being hard working and goal oriented. I’m enrolled in various AP and college level classes, and have been involved in inspiring volunteer programs, such as a year long one at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. I aim to make a positive impact on those around me, while also learning to be more outgoing.

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?
Along with volunteering at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, I also volunteer at the ICAN Dance Center in my community. The center hosts dance classes for special needs children and young adults, and I work alongside them as a dance buddy. My volunteer experiences have helped influence my decision to go into healthcare, and have even begun to make me consider the opportunity of working with children.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
I’m currently working to graduate high school with distinguished honor graduate and around twenty college credits earned. After graduation, I plan to major in radiologic sciences on a MRI track before applying to a radiology technologist program, to become a double certified MRI and X-Ray tech.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
Something I am passionate about is the over usage of AI in every day life, and how it is harming the users, as well as the planet. Using generative AI to do simple tasks, such as writing an essay for school or doing math homework, is causing a decline in effort, motivation, and critical thinking skills for students. Not to mention the amount of water that AI data servers use and how it’s helping to deplete the Earth’s clean drinking water supply.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
Something I’ve learned about myself in the past year is that I can’t be afraid to put myself out there. I was an incredibly introverted person who did not like to talk to strangers, until I became a waitress and now it’s my job to talk to strangers. I also was someone who was afraid of trying new things, until I tried out for colorguard and fell in love with it. I’ve learned that new experiences can change you for the better, and you can’t be afraid of the possibilities.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
One of my favorite memories with the person who nominated me was sitting in the Dairy Queen parking lot after colorguard tryouts. Colorguard was something new that both of us decided to try together, and after tryouts, we went to Dairy Queen for free cone day, and sat in her car and talked for almost two hours. One of our reoccurring inside jokes is from that day, and it set an example of what the next school year, as well as the colorguard team, would be like with her.

Tell us about the photographer or person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
The person who took my photo was my mom. She picked up photography as a hobby when I was about seven years old, and, because my brothers hated having their picture taken, I became her model. Despite her not believing her photography is good enough, I’m always finding new reasons and places for her to take my picture.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine because of my friend who was part of last year’s edition and nominated me for this year’s edition. Being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matters to me because I’m wanting to learn how to be more outgoing and confident, and I believe this is a step in the right direction.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
If I win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, I would use it to help cover any college tuition and fees that aren’t covered by a scholarship from the school. It would help support my goal of going to a college farther from home and learning how to be independent and grow into adulthood.

Can you share a moment from volunteering that has stayed with you and why it was meaningful to you?
One especially memorable moment from volunteering was when me and another girl were doing arts and crafts with a patients sister. The patient had to be there for a long exam, and the sister needed a distraction. We were making animals out of clay, drawings, holiday crafts, and anything else the Art Cart had to offer. When our shift was over, she asked us, “Do y’all really have to go?” That really solidified for me the impact that I have on the kids that I’m volunteering for, and that it’s more than just something to add to a college application.

How do you balance challenging classes, volunteering, work, and your personal life?
I balance challenging classes, volunteering, work, and my personal life by keeping everything scheduled out in my planner. Everything is color coded, down to my classes, tests and quizzes, what time I have to work, birthdays, and hangout with friends. It’s a habit I picked up my Sophomore year just to help things stay organized, and it’s helped so much this year now that I’ve taken on more activities.

What are some hobbies or activities that help you disconnect from technology and recharge?
One hobby that really helps me disconnect from technology is baking. What started out as an attempt at picking up a new hobby has turned into a passion of mine that recently helped me raise $500 through a bake sale. Baking has taught me trial and error, to focus on the moment, and to never give up. I’ve tried countless different recipes before finding the best one, and if I’m not focused on baking, I could add too much or too little of an ingredient, or burn whatever I’m baking. Despite the mess-ups I’ve had, I know that I can always try again.

What do you love most about being involved in colorguard?
What I love most about being in colorguard is seeing and feeling how our individual and collective hard work turns into a beautiful performance. All the long practices and repetitive runs of the routines become worth it when performing under Friday night lights. As colorguard captain my senior year I really hope to make an impact as a positive leader who makes colorguard an enjoyable experience for all.

If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, what would you tell them?
If another teen was considering joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Challenge but is unsure about it, I would tell them that it doesn’t hurt to try and you don’t know until you try. When I first started this challenge I didn’t think I’d be able to get 100 votes, but after the challenge started, I became determined to. Now, not only was I able to obtain 100 votes, but I also have the potential to start a baking business because of the success of the bake sale I did to help raise votes.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Up next for me that I’m super excited for is summer senior activities to prepare for senior year. While it’s bittersweet, I’m excited for all the memories I’m going to make with my friends before college.

I value kindness and believe the way you treat others matters just as much as any achievement.

It’s a very fun class, I would leave class everyday with atleast 2 of the students telling me they had so much fun playing with me today!

What does being dependable and someone others can count on look like in your everyday life?
It means making sure that if people are having a rough day or few weeks that I’m always here to talk about it with them and I’m always a listening ear.

What inspired you to pursue becoming an ultrasound tech?
I have younger siblings and I’ve been to a few of my moms doctor appointments where they put the gel on her stomach and run the scanner over it and you can see the little baby that’s growing inside, that always seemed so interesting to me and something I would love to do - being able to bring people their happiness with seeing the life growing inside of them.

I hope to be to share a different type of happiness with families after them hearing the heart beat of their new life

How do you show kindness even in challenging or stressful situations?
Even when you’re stressed in your own life doesn’t mean the rest of the people around you are, not taking your stress out on them and just remaining to be kind.

Why do you think kindness and respect are so important in today’s world?
You never know what kind of battles people are dealing with behind closed doors and kindness can always make someone’s day 10x without you even knowing

What advice would you give to someone stepping into a leadership role for the first time?
Not everyone is gonna agree with your thoughts and you have to be okay with that and understand it and it’s okay to have different thoughts but you need to listen to everyone’s thoughts and put it all together to make everything work

I would tell the other teen they should definitely join!! It’s not something that happens often and the way it makes you feel during the process is so loving!

Even with the amount of votes right now I am beyond grateful of all of the support I’ve gotten right now and I know how much people around me strive to see me succeed.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you get where you are today?
I could thank a couple people, my mom and Erinn Letts! But really thankful for my mom and everything she’s done to help me succeed and support me in everything I do, she’s my best friend and I could do anything without her!

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?
One thing not fully captured in my nomination is how I support others behind the scenes. Whether it’s encouraging teammates in dance, helping younger students find confidence, or volunteering in my community, I try to lead with kindness and consistency. I’ve learned that small actions—showing up, listening, and lifting others up—can make a lasting impact. I take pride in being someone people can rely on, even when no one is watching.

What has been one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in dance or life, and how did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in dance—and honestly in life too—was learning how to push through self-doubt.

What is a moment where you felt especially proud of yourself and why?
A moment when I felt especially proud of myself was stepping on stage with confidence, not just because of how I performed, but because of how far I had come—from doubting myself to believing in my abilities.

How do you stay motivated and disciplined when balancing dance, school, and everything else in your life?
I stay motivated by reminding myself why I’m doing everything in the first place. Dance isn’t just an activity for me—it’s something I’ve committed to for years, and I genuinely love it.

How do you define success for yourself at this stage in your life?
At this stage in my life, success means knowing I worked hard, stayed true to who I am, and set myself up for the next chapter.

How do you hope to use your talents and passions to make a difference in the future?
I hope to use my talents and passions to inspire and connect with others. Dance has been such a big part of my life, and I’ve seen how it can build confidence, create friendships, and give people a way to express themselves.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
Right now, I’m working toward continuing my education while staying involved in dance and service. I hope to grow as both a performer and a leader, using my passion to inspire others. I’m also focused on giving back more through community service and mentorship, especially to younger dancers. Long term, I want to build a future where I can combine my passions with helping others.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I’m most passionate about dance because it has shaped who I am. It’s more than movement—it’s discipline, expression, and growth. Dance has taught me how to push through challenges, stay committed, and believe in myself. I could talk about it for hours because it’s where I feel most confident and connected. It matters to me because it’s helped me grow not just as a dancer, but as a person.

What is one dance experience that you will never forget - hit highest on the happy scale, still makes you smile when you think about it today?
One dance experience that I will never forget is winning an award in the Distinguished Young Woman Program. This program has taught me to get out of my comfort zone and realize to not take everything so serious.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
This past year, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about being in charge—it’s about setting an example and supporting others. I’ve grown more confident in using my voice, but also in listening and understanding different perspectives. I’ve realized that I lead best by staying positive, working hard, and encouraging those around me. This has helped me become a stronger, more thoughtful leader and person.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
One of my favorite memories is when they took the time to truly listen to me during a stressful time and reminded me of my potential when I was doubting myself. It wasn’t just what they said, but how much they believed in me that stuck with me. They’ve always been someone who pushes me to be better while supporting me no matter what, and that means everything to me.

Tell us about the photographer or person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
I connected with the photographer through this opportunity, and the experience was really positive. They made me feel comfortable and confident, which allowed me to be myself in front of the camera. It didn’t feel forced—it felt natural and encouraging. I appreciated how they took the time to understand who I am, and that made the experience even more meaningful.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine through my nomination, and it immediately stood out to me because it highlights young people making a difference. Being part of something like this matters to me because it’s not just about recognition—it’s about inspiring others and showing that hard work, passion, and kindness don’t go unnoticed. It’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
If I were to receive this scholarship, I would use it to support my education and continue pursuing my passions, especially in dance and community involvement. It would help relieve financial stress and allow me to focus more on growing, learning, and giving back. This support would bring me closer to my goals and help me continue making a positive impact in my community.

What made you say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge, and how did you feel when you first started?
I said “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge because I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone. When I first started, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. Part of me was really motivated and ready to take it on, but another part of me wasn’t sure if I could keep up or do as well as I wanted.

What is one moment during the challenge so far that has made you feel proud or realize you were growing—in confidence, mindset, or taking action?
One moment that made me realize I was growing was when I stopped overthinking and started taking action. In that moment, I realized my mindset was shifting. Instead of holding myself back, I was becoming more confident in putting myself out there and trying new things.

Now that you have your interview, which leaderboard level are you most looking forward to and why?
What excites me most is that each level isn’t just a number—it represents growth in confidence and effort. I want to see how far I can push myself and continue improving, especially now that I know I’m capable of showing up and doing the work.

If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, what would you tell them?
I would say that you’ll probably surprise yourself. The things that feel intimidating at first get easier the more you show up, and each small step adds up. Even if it feels uncomfortable in the beginning, that’s usually a sign that you’re stepping into growth, not away from it.

Beyond votes or placements, what are you hoping to gain from this experience—and what would make you feel truly successful at the end?
Beyond votes or placements, I’m hoping to gain real confidence in myself—especially the kind that comes from taking action even when I’m unsure. I want to build better discipline, step out of my comfort zone, and become more comfortable putting myself out there.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you get where you are today?
The people I would like to thank are my family, friends, and teachers. They always find ways to support me and help make my dreams possible. They are always there for me whenever I need encouragement or help.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
One of the hardest things I’ve ever accomplished was earning good grades while balancing dance and other responsibilities in my life. There were times when it felt overwhelming trying to keep up with schoolwork, practices, and everything else, but I stayed focused and kept pushing myself.

What other inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you, not mentioned in your nomination, would you like readers to know about?
I am extremely hard-working, maintaining a 3.9 GPA throughout high school, as well as obtaining her Patient Care Tech, Medical Assistant, and Phlebotomist certifications.

What inspired you to pursue certifications in the medical field while still in high school?
I chose this path because we need more healthcare workers as a whole, and I feel as though even if my career is in a different direction, starting early will help me gain experience and connections, as well as being able to help people.

How do you balance your academic goals, extracurricular activities, and personal life while staying grounded?
Over time, I have learned to properly manage my time and compartmentalize what is most important at that moment, and then achieve each task to the best of my ability. I also have so much help from my family and friends who support me in all my achievements.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
My dream is to work as an Occupational Therapist. To do this, I am attending Tennessee Wesleyan University and majoring in OT while continuing my 14 year cheerleading career.

What inspired you to pursue Occupational Therapy, and what draws you specifically to that field?
In my time as an all-star cheerleader, I had a coach who had a below-the-knee amputation due to a car accident that he was in. However, that did not stop him from becoming a cheerleading coach and pushing us to be the best we could be. I watched him go back to school for Occupational Therapy and saw how rewarding and fulfilling it was. Since then, I have always felt called to make sure that people who are also going through the same thing feel seen and can try their best to get back to their day to day tasks.

In what ways do you hope to make a difference in people’s lives as a future Occupational Therapist?
To be able to make people, who have had so many opportunities taken from them, see the light in the situation. I also want to be able to help people gain parts of themselves back and hopefully help in their faith journey along the way.

What could you talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I could talk about how much it means to keep going. I started high school after moving away from my hometown and everything that was familiar to me, and along the way, I have experienced loss, grief, injury, stress, burn out, and so much more. As graduation creeps closer I look back at those experiences and know how worth it, it truly is to make it to this point, because unfortunately some people don’t. That’s why I encourage anyone out there struggling with anything to pray and trust God’s plans for your life.

How has your faith shaped the way you approach challenges and uncertain seasons in your life?
In different situations in my life, it has been very easy for me to doubt God and be unsure with where I stood in my faith. However, even in those times, God has met me exactly where I am and has helped me to climb out of depression and anxiety and self-sabotage, and made me realize that I have a purpose and that He has a plan for me and my life.

What does being part of FCA mean to you on a personal level, and how has it influenced your perspective?
FCA means the world to me, I love having the opportunity to make my school a ministry. Having fellow students come to me asking questions about Jesus and giving them the strength to pray and ask God for guidance in a difficult situation. It has definitely opened my perspective on what people go through and how much one encouraging word or prayer can help someone who really needs it, as stated in Proverbs 12:25.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or influencer in the past year?
I have learned that sometimes things will not go the way you plan them to, people will try to stand in the way, make up rumors, whatever the case may be. However, those people have taught me to reflect on the mission of what I am trying to accomplish and know I am doing to inspire someone else.

Can you share a moment from cheer or dance that pushed you beyond your comfort zone and helped you grow?
Trying dance for the first time after cheering for 14 years was definitely something that pushed me out of my comfort zone. However, it did help be grow in my confidence and know that I can do anything I set my mind to and it was refreshing to be doing something new before continuing my cheerleading career in college.

What role does creativity, like art and painting, play in helping you express yourself or reset when life feels overwhelming?
Art has become a way for me to escape the monotony of life and the stresses that come with it. I can really just put my thoughts into whatever art I am making whether that is a painting or something made on the pottery wheel.

Who has been one of your biggest influences or role models, and what have you learned from them?
My mom is one of my biggest role models. As I was growing up, she was a single mother who was trying her best to give me the best childhood possible. She showed me how to be independent and be more confident in my personality and has shown me that she will always be in my corner no matter what.

What advice would you give to someone who is going through a tough season and struggling to keep going?
I would tell someone to lay it all at God’s feet. Which sounds easier said than done, especially in the thick of the dark times. However, it is in the dark times that God is working in your life and as hard as it may seem right now, there is a light that will guide you through.

As you look ahead to college and this next chapter, what excites you most about the journey in front of you?
The unknown, not knowing what is next is scary but fun for me. I am so excited to see where this journey and career takes me, and I am confident in God’s plan and knowing that even though I may not know, he knew before I was even created so He will guide me where He wants me to go.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
My favorite memory is when I was so upset about my boyfriend leaving for army basic training and so I had this crazy idea to honor him in my photos and instead of judging me, she shared what it was like being in a military family, and it became something we bonded over and I felt as though I could truly go to Ashlea for anything!

Tell us about the person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
Ashlea is the most personable person ever. She will make you feel so beautiful, and she is so appreciative of everyone she works with. She is also so willing to be spontaneous and make all out visions happen, she is truly one of the best photographers I have ever worked with!

Are you part of a model team with your photographer? If so, tell us about it.
I am on the Ashlea Brooke Senior Team for the class of 2026. It has been so amazing to capture all the major moments in my senior year, especially with my boyfriend being away in the Army and not being able to attend my senior events. She has made that experience so much better for me and let me honor him at all my photoshoots. She is our personal hypewoman. She made me feel overall more confident while being on her team.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I heard about it when I saw the email in my inbox and did more research into the organization! Being part of this would mean the world to me, I have a very lengthy and complicated testimony, but this would help give me peace of mind that all of my hard work can inspire someone else to do the same!

How will winning a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine help you?
The scholarship will help me with college funds and help pay some upcoming student loans! I would be so honored to win!

What made you say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge, and how did you feel when you first started?
I would love to just spread awareness for anxiety and darkness and how God has helped me through my years in high school. I said “yes” because I was excited to be an inspiration for other teens out there who could be going through the same situations.

Now that you have your interview, which leaderboard level are you most looking forward to and why?
The pink graduation cord, because it just shows how much I have grown and is a tangible representation of how many people I have already impacted.

If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, what would you tell them?
I would tell them that it is totally worth it and that it made me realize how influential I get to be to other teens around me.
Beyond votes or placements, what are you hoping to gain from this experience—and what would make you feel truly successful at the end?
I just want to be able to know that my story has impacted someone in some way.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you get where you are today?
I would like to thank my photographer Ashlea Riden and my mom Wyndi Brown.

What other inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you, not mentioned in your nomination, would you like readers to know about?
One experience that has really shaped who I am was being a debutante for the Lubbock Symphony Guild, where I learned the value of service, commitment, and representing something bigger than myself. I’m also involved in the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and I stay very involved in my youth group, which has played a big role in shaping my character and values. Through these experiences, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about achievements—it’s about how you show up every day. I try to be a hard worker who stays determined even when things get challenging, and I’ve learned to be adaptable when plans don’t go the way I expected. More than anything, I want to be a positive influence on the people around me and be someone who brings encouragement and light into every environment I’m in.

How did your experience as a debutante shape the way you view leadership and responsibility today?
Being a debutante showed me that leadership isn’t about attention, but about how you represent yourself and others. It taught me to be responsible, stay composed, and follow through on commitments. I learned that small actions—like being respectful and dependable—make a difference. Now, I view leadership as setting a good example, supporting those around me, and handling responsibility with consistency and integrity.

What does being a “positive influence” look like in your everyday life, even in small moments?
Being a positive influence in my everyday life looks like how I treat people in small, consistent ways—being kind, including others, and choosing not to speak negatively. It’s encouraging someone when they’re having a hard day, staying respectful even when it’s not easy, and doing what’s right without needing recognition. To me, it’s less about big actions and more about being someone others feel comfortable around and can count on.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
I am currently working toward careers in real estate and photography. I am enrolled in a real estate course and plan to take my sales agent licensing exam in late May. After that, I hope to find a broker to sponsor me so I can begin gaining experience in the field. I also own and operate my own photography business, which I am very passionate about. I am focused on improving my skills, building my portfolio, and growing my reach. My goal is to continue developing both professionally and creatively to build successful, meaningful careers in both areas.

What drew you to real estate, and what excites you most about building a career in that field?
I was drawn to real estate because I like the idea of helping people find a place that really feels like home. It’s not just about houses—it’s about big life moments and decisions. What excites me most is the mix of working with people and building something for myself. I like that it’s a field where your effort matters, and there’s always something new to learn. It feels like a career where I can grow, stay motivated, and make a real impact.

How has running your own photography business helped you grow as both a creative and a leader?
Running my photography business has helped me grow as both a creative and a leader. Creatively, it’s pushed me to develop my style and adapt to different people and situations. As a leader, it’s taught me responsibility, organization, and how to make decisions under pressure. It’s also strengthened my people skills—learning how to make clients feel comfortable, communicate clearly, and understand what they need. Overall, it’s shown me how leadership is about guiding others with confidence while building genuine connections along the way.

What lessons have you learned about discipline and time management while balancing so many commitments?
Balancing multiple commitments has taught me that discipline isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about being consistent and intentional with my time. I’ve learned how important it is to plan ahead, prioritize what actually matters, and not wait until the last minute to get things done. Time management for me also means knowing when to slow down and when to focus so I don’t get overwhelmed. Overall, it’s helped me take responsibility for my schedule and be more organized in both school, business, and personal life.

What could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I could talk about my faith and my relationship with Jesus for hours because it has truly shaped my life. My faith gives me purpose, direction, and something steady to rely on in every season. It’s not just what I believe, but something I try to live out daily. Christian community has also been very important to me. Being surrounded by people who encourage, support, and challenge me has helped me grow in confidence and character. It reminds me that I’m never alone and has played a big role in shaping who I am and who I am becoming.

How do you live out your faith in your daily interactions with teammates, friends, and clients?
I try to live out my faith through how I treat people every day—being kind, patient, and respectful in my interactions with teammates, friends, and clients. That means encouraging others, listening well, and trying to respond with grace even in stressful or frustrating moments. I also try to be honest and dependable so people can trust me. For me, it’s less about saying it and more about showing it through how I act and how I make others feel.

Can you share a moment when your faith helped you push through a difficult challenge or setback?
I don’t really think of it as one single moment, but there have been times when things didn’t go how I expected and I had to lean on my faith in God. In those moments, prayer helped me slow down, calm my thoughts, and remember that I’m not going through things alone. It reminded me to trust God’s timing, even when I was frustrated or discouraged. Instead of letting setbacks define me, my faith helped me keep perspective and move forward with peace, knowing God still had a plan even when I couldn’t see it.

What role has your Christian community played in helping you stay grounded and confident?
My Christian community has played a big role in helping me stay grounded and confident. Being around people who share my faith encourages me to stay focused on what really matters and not get caught up in comparison or pressure. They’ve also been a source of support—whether that’s through encouragement, prayer, or just being there during stressful seasons. It reminds me that I’m not doing life alone, and that helps me stay more confident and steady in both my faith and everyday decisions.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or influencer in the past year?
Over the past year, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about being the loudest person in the room, but about being consistent, encouraging, and willing to serve others. I’ve realized I have the most influence by setting a strong example and putting effort into everything I do. I’ve also learned that I am more adaptable than I thought. Whether working with different groups or facing unexpected challenges, I’ve grown more confident in stepping up when needed. This year has shown me that leadership is about earning trust, setting an example, and being someone others can rely on and look up to.

How have your experiences with injuries shaped your mindset and resilience as both an athlete and a leader?
Dealing with injuries has really shaped my mindset and resilience as both an athlete and a leader. It’s taught me patience, because recovery takes time and you can’t rush the process. It also forced me to focus on what I could control instead of what I was missing out on. As a leader, it’s made me more understanding toward others who are going through setbacks, and more intentional about encouraging people when they’re struggling. Overall, it’s helped me grow stronger mentally and learn how to stay motivated even when things don’t go as planned.

What does being a “team player” truly mean to you, and how do you show that in high-pressure moments?
To me, being a “team player” means putting the success of the group above myself and being someone others can rely on. It’s about supporting people, communicating well, and staying positive even when things get stressful. In high-pressure moments, I try to stay calm, do my job, and encourage the people around me instead of adding more stress. I’ve learned that how you respond in those moments can really affect the whole team, so I focus on staying steady and helping keep everyone working together.

Looking ahead, what kind of impact do you hope to leave on the people and communities you’re a part of?
Looking ahead, I hope to leave an impact by being someone who genuinely cares about people and shows that in how I treat them. In my communities, I want to be remembered as someone who was dependable, encouraging, and willing to help others grow in whatever they’re doing. Whether it’s through photography, real estate, sports, or everyday interactions, I want people to feel supported and valued around me. Ultimately, I hope my impact reflects my faith and the way I try to lead with kindness, integrity, and purpose.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
What means the most to me is that my mom has always been my biggest supporter. She leads by example and shows me what it looks like to be strong, caring, and selfless. Knowing she believes in me and is always there for me is something I will never take for granted. One of my favorite memories with her is getting ready for prom together. She helped me get everything ready and made sure I felt confident. It wasn’t just about prom itself, but the time we spent together leading up to it that made the experience so meaningful.

Tell us about the person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
The person who took my photos is my youth leader, Giorgio Etnel. I’ve known him for several years through my church community, so when it came time for senior pictures, I immediately knew I wanted to book with him. The experience felt very comfortable and natural, which made a big difference. He guided me through each pose, helped me feel confident, and made the session enjoyable. There were also plenty of laughs throughout the shoot, which made it feel less like a formal session and more like a relaxed, memorable experience.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine when the account commented on my photography page. After looking into it, I learned more about the organization and the opportunities it offers, including scholarships and publication. Being featured in Inspiring Teens Magazine matters to me because it is a meaningful way to recognize my activities, goals, and personal growth. It is also a great opportunity to be part of something that highlights teens in a positive way and showcases different achievements and experiences while encouraging others to pursue their own goals and passions.

How will winning a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine help you?
Winning a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine would help me contribute to my college expenses and take some of the financial responsibility off my parents. While they are supporting me, I would like to do my part by helping in any way I can. It would also allow me to stay focused on my future goals in real estate and photography with less financial stress. Having that support would give me more freedom to gain experience, build my businesses, and continue growing personally and professionally as I work toward establishing my career.

What made you say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge, and how did you feel when you first started?
I said “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge because it felt like a good opportunity to grow, step out of my comfort zone, and use my story in a positive way. I also liked that it wasn’t just about recognition, but about inspiring other people my age to be confident and intentional with what they’re doing. When I first started, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. It was something new, and I wasn’t totally sure what to expect, but I was also proud of myself for taking the step and seeing where it would lead.

What is one moment during the challenge so far that has made you feel proud or realize you were growing - in confidence, mindset, or taking action?
One moment that really stood out during the challenge was earning Impact Leader. It made me stop and realize that I was actually growing, not just participating. It gave me a boost in confidence and showed me that the effort I was putting in mattered. More than anything, it shifted my mindset—I started seeing myself as someone capable of leading and making an impact, not just someone going through the process. It pushed me to take more initiative and be more intentional with how I show up.

Now that you have your interview, which leaderboard level are you most looking forward to and why?
Now that I’ve completed the interview, I’m most looking forward to reaching the scholarship eligible level. It represents more than just moving up a leaderboard to me—it feels like a step toward new opportunities and proving to myself that my effort is paying off. I’m motivated by the chance to keep growing, stay consistent, and make the most out of the experience. Being scholarship eligible would be meaningful, show commitment, and open doors for what’s next.

If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, what would you tell them?
I’d tell them it’s worth it, even if they feel unsure at first. It’s normal to be a little nervous about something new, but that’s kind of the point—you grow by stepping into it anyway. It’s a chance to build confidence, learn more about yourself, and connect with other people in a positive way. You don’t have to have everything figured out to start, you just have to be willing to try.

Beyond votes or placements, what are you hoping to gain from this experience—and what would make you feel truly successful at the end?
Beyond votes or placements, I’m hoping to gain more confidence in myself and a clearer sense of how I can use my voice and influence in a positive way. I also want to grow in how I lead and show up consistently in what I commit to. At the end of the experience, I would feel truly successful if I can look back and see that I grew—whether that’s in my mindset, my confidence, or how I impact others. If I leave this experience more intentional and confident in who I am and what I stand for, that would mean the most to me.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you get where you are today?
Yes, I’d like to thank my family for always supporting me and encouraging me to keep going, even when things get busy or challenging. They’ve helped me stay grounded and reminded me of what really matters. I’m also thankful for my friends, teammates, and clients who have trusted me, pushed me to grow, and believed in me in different ways. I also want to thank my photographer Gio for these amazing pictures! And most importantly, I’m grateful to God for guiding me, giving me strength, and opening doors in my life that I couldn’t have done on my own.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
I am so grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to continue to grow!

What other inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you, not mentioned in your nomination, would you like readers to know about?

I am currently a member of FFA (Future Farmers of America).

What has participating in FFA taught you about leadership, responsibility, or teamwork?
FFA pushes me to step up even when I’m not fully comfortable. FFA also has taught me that leadership, responsibility, and teamwork aren’t separate skills—they’re connected. You can’t lead well without being responsible, and you can’t succeed without working effectively with others.

How do your different roles—dance team, football manager, and unified track supporter—shape who you are as a person?
I’ve been involved in dance team, football management, and unified track, and each has shaped me differently. Dance taught me discipline and confidence, football management built my responsibility and work ethic, and unified track helped me develop empathy and a strong sense of inclusion. Together, these experiences have made me a team-oriented and adaptable person.”

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?

My dream is to be an Ultrasound Tech after college.

What inspired you to pursue a career as an Ultrasound Tech, and what excites you most about that path?
I’ve always been interested in healthcare and helping people, and becoming an ultrasound tech stood out to me because it combines patient care with technology. I like that it’s a hands-on role where you can make patients feel comfortable while also playing an important part in diagnosing and monitoring their health. What excites me most is being able to directly impact someone’s experience in a medical setting and contribute to their care in a meaningful way.

Where is your ideal dream job located if it were offered to you today?
My ideal job location would be working in a children’s hospital but ultimately what matters most to me is working in a supportive environment where I can make a difference for patients and continue developing my skills.

How do you plan to prepare yourself now for success in your future career?
Right now, I’m preparing for a future career as an ultrasound technician by focusing on my education. I’m also looking into taking medical related classes through Hoosier Hills Career Center to build strong communication skills, attention to detail, and professionalism so I can provide accurate imaging and quality patient care in the future.”

What could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?

Family, especially my grandpa who just passed away and my nephew who is currently fighting Neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer.

How has your family shaped your perspective on strength, love, and resilience?
My family has shaped my perspective by teaching me the importance of staying strong during challenges, showing support for one another, and not giving up when things get difficult. Through them, I’ve learned that resilience means adapting to obstacles and continuing to move forward, while love means being dependable, compassionate, and present for others. These values have influenced how I approach both my personal life and my future career.

What is something your grandpa taught you that you will carry with you for the rest of your life?
My grandpa taught me that you can work hard, be kind, stay patient, and still keep a sense of humor. He made people feel loved and always found a way to make others laugh. That’s something I’ll always carry with me.

In what ways has your nephew’s journey impacted how you view challenges and gratitude?
My 4-year-old nephew’s cancer journey has taught me not to take life or health for granted. Watching him face something so difficult at such a young age has given me a new perspective on challenges and made me more grateful for everyday moments, family, and simply having another day together.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or influencer in the past year?

I have learned that I am a stronger person than I previously thought I was. I have overcome fears of public speaking by writing my own speech and giving a eulogy at my grandfathers funeral.

What did that moment of giving your grandfather’s eulogy teach you about courage and your own voice?
Giving my grandfather’s eulogy taught me that courage is showing up and speaking from the heart, even when it’s hard. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me find confidence in my own voice during one of the most emotional moments of my life

How do you continue to push yourself outside of your comfort zone after overcoming something so personal?
Giving my grandfather’s eulogy showed me that I’m capable of more than I sometimes give myself credit for, especially in difficult or emotional situations. Since then, I try to challenge myself by saying yes to opportunities that make me nervous, speaking up more confidently, and trusting myself even when I don’t feel fully ready. That experience reminded me that discomfort is often temporary, but the growth and confidence that come from pushing through it can stay with you long after.”

What does leading “behind the scenes” mean to you, and why is it an important kind of leadership?
Leading behind the scenes means making an impact without always needing recognition or being at the center of attention. To me, it’s about supporting others through preparation and encouragement. It’s an important kind of leadership because not all leaders are the loudest in the room—sometimes the strongest leaders are the ones creating stability, solving problems quietly, and helping others succeed.”

How do you help others feel seen, supported, and confident in the environments you’re a part of?
I try to listen genuinely, offer encouragement, and create an environment where people feel comfortable being themselves and sharing their ideas. I also believe in recognizing others’ strengths and contributions, because sometimes a little reassurance or acknowledgment can make a big difference in someone’s confidence and sense of belonging.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?

My favorite memories with Kim is how we always take a selfie after every photoshoot. Kim has brought out a different person in me and has really helped my open up and become a better model and influencer.

Tell us about the person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
When I joined the team I was the youngest influencer that she had so far but she treated me like one of the older girls and taught me that age is just a number and beauty is more than what you see in the camera.

Tell us more about the Influencer team and what makes you come back year after year.

The Influencer team has been such a meaningful experience for me. What keeps me coming back year after year is the opportunity to connect with people and be part of a team that values creativity, collaboration, and genuine impact. I’ve also grown a lot through this experience, both personally and professionally, and each year brings new opportunities to challenge myself, build relationships, and contribute in different ways.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?

I first heard about Inspiring Team Magazine when my photographer surprised me and told me I was being published. It was such an inspiring and exciting moment for me.

How will winning a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine help you?

Winning a scholarship would help me by getting a head start on my future education.

What made you say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge, and how did you feel when you first started?
I said yes to the Inspiring Teens challenge because I wanted to be part of something that encourages growth, confidence, and connection. It felt like an opportunity to challenge myself in a new way while also inspiring others through my own experiences. When I first started, I was definitely nervous and unsure of what to expect, but I was also excited. Over time, that initial nervousness turned into confidence as I realized how much I was learning and how rewarding it was to be involved.

What is one moment during the challenge so far that has made you feel proud or realize you were growing - in confidence, mindset, or taking action?
One moment during the challenge that made me feel proud was realizing how much I’ve grown in confidence. I’ve become more comfortable putting myself out there, trusting my voice, and saying yes to opportunities that challenge me. It made me recognize that growth doesn’t happen all at once, but through small moments where you keep choosing to show up, push yourself, and keep going even when it feels uncomfortable.

Now that you have your interview, which leaderboard level are you most looking forward to and why?
Now that I’ve made it to the interview stage, I’m most looking forward to reaching the Icon Distinction level because it represents continued growth and progress. For me, it’s not just about the ranking itself, but about challenging myself to stay consistent, keep improving, and see how far I can push myself. Each level feels like a reflection of the work, dedication, and personal growth that has come with this experience.”

If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, what would you tell them?
I would tell them to go for it. Growth rarely happens when you stay comfortable, and this challenge is such a great opportunity to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and connect with inspiring people. It can feel intimidating at first, but that uncertainty is often where the most growth happens. You never know what you’re capable of until you give yourself the chance to try.

Beyond votes or placements, what are you hoping to gain from this experience—and what would make you feel truly successful at the end?
Beyond votes or placements, I’m hoping to gain personal growth, stronger confidence, and valuable connections through this experience. For me, success isn’t just about the final outcome, but about how much I’ve challenged myself and grown along the way. I would feel truly successful knowing I gave my best effort and stayed authentic to who I am throughout the process.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you get where you are today?
I’m incredibly grateful to my mom who has supported and encouraged me throughout my journey. Her strength has inspired me in so many ways. Watching her fight breast cancer while continuing to support, encourage, and show up for me taught me so much about resilience, selflessness, and perseverance. Her example of never giving up has motivated me to keep pushing myself and pursuing new opportunities.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
I’m really grateful for this opportunity and everything this experience has already taught me. It has helped me grow in confidence, and reminded me to trust myself more. No matter the outcome, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited to keep growing, both personally and as a leader.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had a full day with nothing planned, you’d probably find me spending time with family or friends, enjoying good food, relaxing with my cats, and just appreciating the little moments

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I’m am extremely excited to be doing something I am very passionate about. I will be competing in a National competitive dance competition that will be taking place in Pigeon Forge.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to someone who wants to be where I am today would be to believe in yourself, stay consistent, and not be afraid to try new things. Growth comes from taking chances, staying open to new opportunities, and trusting the process even when things feel uncertain.

3 Things on your bucket list.
Go skydiving
Visit Scotland
Ride an elephant

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom the most inspiring. As a single parent, she has always worked hard to provide for and support our family while continuing to encourage me in everything I do. Throughout her illness she never gave up and lost hope. I can only hope one day to be the kind of person she is.

Is National Junior Honor Society Worth It? How Top Teens Build Leadership & Stand Out

4/20/2026

Picture

Every year, thousands of middle school students receive an NJHS invitation letter — and thousands of parents ask the same question: Is National Junior Honor Society actually worth it?

The short answer? Yes. But only if your teen treats it like a launchpad, not a line on a form.
What Is the National Junior Honor Society?

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of the most recognized academic honor societies for students in grades 6–9. Selection is based on five pillars: scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship. Membership is invitation-only, typically requiring a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and is widely considered one of the most prestigious middle school honors a student can earn.

Does NJHS Look Good for College?
Yes — but context matters. College admissions officers recognize NJHS as a meaningful credential, particularly when a student can speak to how they led, served, and contributed rather than simply listing membership. Active participation — leading a service project, holding a chapter officer role, mentoring peers — carries far more weight than passive membership.

How Top Teens Use NJHS to Stand Out
The students who get the most from NJHS aren't just attending meetings. They're:
  • Initiating service projects tied to causes they genuinely care about
  • Running for chapter leadership positions like president, secretary, or treasurer
  • Connecting NJHS work to a longer leadership narrative they carry into high school and beyond
  • Documenting their impact — hours served, people reached, problems solved

That documentation becomes powerful content for high school honor society applications, scholarship essays, and college personal statements.

NJHS vs. NHS: What's the Difference?
NJHS serves middle schoolers (grades 6–9), while the National Honor Society (NHS) is the high school equivalent. Strong NJHS participation sets the foundation for NHS membership and signals to future programs — and future admissions committees — that leadership has been a consistent value, not a last-minute strategy.

The Bottom Line
National Junior Honor Society is worth it when a student uses it intentionally. The certificate matters less than the character it reflects. For teens who are serious about leadership, scholarship, and making an impact, NJHS is one of the earliest and most credible places to start building a legacy.

Ashlyn Robinson

4/15/2026

Picture
Ashlyn Robinson - Pennsylvania
Nomination & Photography by Albright Studio Photography
Issue 102 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ashlyn is a senior at Williamsport Area High School with many accomplishments. She is a volunteer firefighter, a Nationally Registered EMT, the first team ALL-STATE first baseman, starting pitcher for her high school softball team, and an active member of her Church. While just being honored for her 100th career hit, Ashlyn also assists in coaching the middle school's softball team. Her whole life is not about softball though, through all her activities Ashlyn maintains academic honor roll and is a member of National Honor Society. She is a student ambassador and placed 1st in the Skills USA Emergency Medical Technician division, along with being the Student Advisor for the Homeland Security CTE program at Williamsport. She also has been working with Homeland Security Juniors, sharing her knowledge and experiences so they can be successful for when they take their EMT test. She works hard to inspire younger generations of softball players and first responders. She is a well rounded girl willing to put in what it takes to succeed.

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?

I’m a hardworking and passionate individual who puts my full effort into everything I do. In softball, I’ve spent countless hours training to improve my skills and become the best player I can be. I also coach pitching and hitting, building strong connections with younger athletes over the past three years. I bring the same dedication to being a first responder, training regularly and gaining experience with local ambulance companies while volunteering at community events like the Little League World Series and the Hughesville Carnival.

Where do you think your strong work ethic and passion first came from, and who or what has influenced that the most?
I believe my strong work-ethics and passion came from my parents. They have always told me that you can earn anything as long as you work for it. With my dad owning our family business, he has spent countless nights working to support our family a day at a time. He has shown us that nothing gets handed to us, and you have to work for it. I have applied this within my softball and my firefighting, showing others that good things will come to you as long as you put the work in.

Can you share a moment when you had to push through a challenge or setback, and what that experience taught you?
Over the summer, a strained hamstring sidelined me during softball season. It was crushing to watch my team compete from the sidelines, feeling helpless but not hopeless. Once the season ended, I dedicated myself to the gym, strengthening my muscles to prevent future injuries. Pushing through the emotional toll of being hurt, I focused on restoring my health. This experience taught me that success is only possible when you prioritize your physical and mental well-being first. Hard work requires a healthy foundation.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
Last year, I was named 1st Team All-State First Baseman in 6A, achieving a goal I set at the start of the season. My high school honored me by displaying my photo in the commons. This year, I aim to build on that success and continue working hard for those who support me. Beyond softball, my goal is to become a certified firefighter-paramedic and serve my community. After gaining experience, I hope to return to teaching and inspire others in a career I’m passionate about.

What does a typical day look like for you as you balance academics, athletics, and serving your community?
Currently, I take duel-enrollment courses to prepare for post-secondary expectations, which requires significant studying and writing. After school, I play softball and build lasting memories with my team. Most days, I head straight from the field to my fire company to train and respond to local emergencies. Despite a packed schedule—even on game days—I consistently prioritize my education. Balancing athletics and community service has taught me to manage my time effectively, ensuring my school assignments and grades always come first!

How do you stay motivated during busy or overwhelming seasons when everything demands your time and energy?
I stay motivated by looking towards the new memories and accomplishments that some with time and energy. Like I said, nothing gets handed to you for free, and you must work hard for the things you want. Even though some things can become overwhelming and stressful, I always remind myself that God is there to help me overcome that stress. He knows how hard I work and always reminds me that good things come to those who are patient and work hard.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
One topic I could talk about for hours is my work as an EMT. I’ve learned anatomy and physiology, basic pharmacology, treatments, and how the body responds. There’s so much the human body can do that I never realized before my training. You could say I’m a bit of a nerd for it! Understanding how the body functions is incredibly important, and it’s helped me treat patients more effectively while motivating me to keep learning and exploring new topics.

Can you describe a moment as an EMT or volunteer that deeply impacted you or changed your perspective?
While working the Little League World Series, a man suffered a medical emergency. Amidst the chaos, I saw his daughter crying in the crowd. I led her to our first aid stand, bonding with her and providing comfort while we treated her father. Before they left, she gave me a heartfelt hug. This experience solidified my purpose: as a first responder, we are the comfort and support system for people during the worst days of their lives. We provide hope when they have nowhere else to turn.

What advice would you give to other teens who are interested in becoming first responders or entering the medical field?
Stay humble and open to criticism. This is a career that is based on learning and experience. When someone gives you criticism, take it and learn from it. It will not only make you better, but it is something that you can take home with you and apply it to the future. No one in this field is looking to make you worse; they only wish to see you succeed. This is a brother/sisterhood that you will find only wishes to watch you become a better responder and a better person.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
People look up to you for being yourself, not someone you’re not. I admire individuals whose personalities shine and who embrace who they are without apology. Over the past year, I’ve grown into that kind of person—someone who stays authentic in any situation. Remaining calm, confident, and true to myself, especially in leadership roles, builds trust with others who are looking for someone to follow and believe in.

How has being a leader on the field and in emergency situations shaped the way you handle pressure?
You must learn how to keep your composure in tough situations. If you show others that you are stressed or that you're upset, it affects the teammates or colleagues that you are working with. Being able to regulate your emotions in tough situations not only shows others your strength, but it shows them that you know what you're doing and gives them full confidence in you. Keeping your composure in sticky situations will only make you a better leader, whether it comes to an emergency or leading a team to a state championship.

In what ways do you hope to continue inspiring younger athletes and future first responders?
I aspire to coach softball and instill the same morals in my players that the sport taught me. Softball builds more than just athletes; it shapes successful individuals prepared for the real world. Similarly, as a first responder, I want to mentor others by sharing my knowledge and experiences. My goal is to help them become not only skilled responders but also exceptional employees and people. Whether on the field or on a call, I am dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders.

What does success look like to you beyond awards and recognition?
Success to me is being there and showing up for the people I love and the people that I work with. Knowing that I made a made a difference in someone's life is enough success for me. I want to be the reason that someone works harder every day and reaches for the stars. Whether that's a colleague, a player, or even a patient, I want to be the reason that they decide to work hard for their future.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
I wish to be a Firefighter-Paramedic Instructor, where I can work at all my passions equally. Being able to experience all of my passions at the same time would be my biggest dream. Although the workload to balance all these passions would be a challenge, nothing compares to happiness and the experience that I would gain from that career.

What is one of your favorite memories with something that means a lot to you about Maddy Fiori from Albright Studio Photography, who nominated you?
The person who nominated me is so friendly and is always outgoing with what they do. She has such a kind heart, and even though we are opposites, she always puts a smile on others' faces! No matter what mood I am in, what kind of day I am having, seeing her always puts a little sunshine into my day.

Tell us more about your photographer — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
The photographer who took my photo is a very outgoing person and is highly extroverted. They always have so many great ideas for different photo opportunities and what will make me look my best. I feel like we really connected during my senior photos. I’m not much of a photo-person myself, but they helped me come out of my shell to make the session memorable! They have also always rooted for me in my extracurricular activities and have been a big part of my childhood.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard of Inspiring Teens Magazine when a local athlete was nominated and shared her voting links on social media. Seeing her recognition inspired me and made me realize how meaningful it is to be celebrated for your hard work. Being part of this magazine motivates me to continue growing as both an athlete and a person. It shows that working hard and staying humble can earn you the spotlight you deserve. Even if you haven’t found your spotlight yet, you shouldn’t give up—there are people who care about your dreams and accomplishments just as much as you do!

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
I would use it to pay for my education that will help me work towards my dreams. After high school, I plan on attending Pennsylvania College of Technology and major in Emergency Management & Homeland Security. I also plan on attending the college’s paramedic program after earning my Bachelor’s Degree. This will help me pay for meal plans, textbooks, supplies, and tuition.

What made you say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge, and how did you feel when you first started?
What made me say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge is the scholarship that I could potentially earn. Having one more thing to make pay for my education takes a lot of relief off my shoulders. When I first started, I was so excited and texted as many people as I could. It was so heartwarming seeing the amount of support that I gained from my school, fire department, and softball family. It made me feel so loved and supported.

What is one moment during the challenge that made you feel proud or realize you were growing?
When I gained almost 100 votes within twenty-four hours of gaining my link. I was shocked at how many votes I had earned during that time. I didn’t realize how many people supported me and was willing to show me their support if it meant I had one more accomplishment and one more scholarship under my belt.

How have you changed or grown since being part of Inspiring Teens—in confidence, mindset, or taking action?
I have. I have gained so much confidence in myself, knowing that I am making a difference in other people's lives. Not only that, but it has assured my mindset that I’m not alone in this journey. There is always someone that I can turn to and ask for support if I need it.

What challenge or fear did you have to push through, and what did overcoming it mean to you?
Something that I had to overcome was the fear of failure. Failure within softball and being a first responder, failure leads to growth. You can continue to grow if you haven’t experienced failure. It is what makes you a better person and what pushes you to work harder.

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?
I have been a member of 4H for the past 8 years. I have done pigs all 8 of those years following in my dad’s steps. I have done dairy heifers for 3 years to get out of my comfort zone and try something new.

What inspired you to follow in your dad’s footsteps with pigs, and how has that connection shaped your experience?
Following in his footsteps felt less like a choice and more like honoring something meaningful. Working with pigs has taught me responsibility, resilience, and pride in hard work. It’s also strengthened my bond with my dad. We understand each other in a deeper way. Now, every day in the barn feels like carrying forward a legacy while creating my own story.

What have stepping outside your comfort zone with dairy heifers taught you about yourself?
Stepping outside my comfort zone with dairy heifers has shown me that I’m capable of more than I usually give myself credit for. At first, I felt unsure and intimidated, but learning to handle and care for them built my confidence over time. I’ve realized that growth doesn’t happen when things feel easy—it comes from pushing through discomfort and staying patient with myself. Working with the heifers has also taught me to stay calm under pressure and trust my instincts. Now, I see challenges as opportunities, not obstacles, and that mindset has changed how I approach everything.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
I am currently working toward becoming a livestock veterinarian. My passion for animals has grown ever since I was a little kid. I want to be able to help as many farm animals as I can. I’m currently in FFA doing veterinary science and next year will be pursuing animal science through the school and doing an online course this summer to better understand horses’ behaviors and the best way to train each horse.

What does your vision for your future at Purdue University look like, and what excites you most about that next step?
My vision for my future at Purdue University is to grow both academically and personally while pursuing my passion for agriculture. I see myself gaining hands-on experience, building connections, and learning from people who share the same drive. What excites me most is the opportunity to challenge myself in a new environment and discover new strengths. Being surrounded by innovation and tradition motivates me to work harder and dream bigger. I’m especially looking forward to creating lifelong friendships and taking steps toward a career that makes a meaningful impact.

How do you balance school, work, and your involvement with animals while staying focused on your goals?
My vision at Purdue University is to grow academically and personally while pursuing my passion for agriculture. I’m excited to gain hands-on experience, meet driven people, and challenge myself in a new environment. I look forward to building lasting connections and taking meaningful steps toward a future where I can make an impact.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I feel really passionate about all the animals I have ever owned, especially all of my pigs. In the past 8 years every batch of pigs I’ve gotten had shown me different challenges to overcome. They have all made me a better person by showing me that you have to work harder than expected to see the results you want.

Can you share a specific challenge you faced with one of your animals and how you worked through it?
One challenge I faced was working with a stubborn heifer that refused to lead and would panic easily. At first, I felt frustrated, but I realized she needed patience, not pressure. I started spending extra time with her, building trust through consistency and calm handling. Progress was slow, but eventually she began to respond. That experience taught me that patience and understanding often work better than force, both with animals and in life.

What lessons have your animals taught you that you carry into other areas of your life?
Working with animals has taught me patience, responsibility, and the importance of consistency. They rely on me every day, no matter how busy life gets, which has strengthened my work ethic and commitment. I’ve also learned to stay calm under pressure and adapt when things don’t go as planned. These lessons carry into school, work, and relationships, reminding me to be dependable, understanding, and willing to grow through challenges.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
I have learned to lead with my mind and emotions over a physical emotion. This would be pertaining to a sport that I used to play and realized that it no longer benefited me to become the person I wanted to become.

How did making the decision to step away from that sport help you grow as a person?
Deciding to step away from that sport was difficult, but it helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. It taught me to listen to myself and recognize when something no longer aligns with my goals. I learned that letting go isn’t failure, it can be a step toward something better. That choice gave me more time and energy to focus on new opportunities, helping me become more confident, self-aware, and intentional about my future.

In what ways do you see yourself leading or making an impact in the agricultural or veterinary field in the future?
In the future, I see myself making an impact in the agricultural or veterinary field by advocating for animal welfare and supporting producers through hands-on care and education. I want to lead by example, showing the importance of responsibility, compassion, and ethical practices. Whether working directly with animals or alongside farmers, my goal is to build trust, share knowledge, and help improve both animal health and the sustainability of agriculture.

What is your ideal dream job as a livestock veterinarian if it were offered to you today?
My ideal dream job as a livestock veterinarian would be working closely with farmers to support herd health, prevent disease, and improve overall animal welfare. I would love a role that combines hands-on fieldwork with problem-solving, where every day brings something different. Being able to build long-term relationships with producers while making a real impact on both animal care and agricultural success is what motivates me most.

What advice would you give to other teens who are trying to find their passion or step outside their comfort zone?
My advice to other teens is to not be afraid of trying something new, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Growth happens when you push past what feels easy. It’s okay not to have everything figured out—what matters is being open to experiences and learning along the way. Pay attention to what excites you and challenges you, and don’t let fear hold you back from opportunities that could shape your future.

What does success mean to you beyond grades and accomplishments?
To me, success goes beyond grades and accomplishments. It means growing into a person who is responsible, resilient, and true to their values. Success is showing up consistently for the things and people that matter, even when it’s hard. It’s about learning from mistakes, building strong character, and finding purpose in what I do. True success is feeling proud of who I am becoming, not just what I achieve.

What is one of your favorite memories April Moore, who nominated you, or something about her that means a lot to you?
April used comedy to help me keep my natural smile when I was really cold and struggling to stay warm.

How did you connect, and what was that experience like?
Our session was during a cold wintery day and she knew how to keep me smiling and keep me focused on my pictures.

Are you part of a model team with April Moore Creations LLC? If so, tell us about it.
I am part of a model team with my photographer, where I get to represent different projects and creative shoots. It’s been a great experience for building confidence, learning teamwork, and expressing myself in new and creative ways.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine from April Moore, my photographer. I enjoy reading the bios and stories about other people and seeing what inspires them.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
I would use the scholarship to help pay for my college tuition and help me pursue my dream of becoming a livestock veterinarian.

What made you say “yes” to the Inspiring Teens challenge, and how did you feel when you first started?
I said yes to the Inspiring Teens challenge because it felt like a chance to step outside my comfort zone and share my story in a meaningful way. I wanted to challenge myself to be more confident and open. When I first started, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves, but that quickly turned into gratitude. It has been encouraging to reflect on my experiences and realize how much I’ve grown through them.

What is one moment during the challenge that made you feel proud or realize you were growing?
One moment during the challenge that made me feel proud was when I reflected on my experiences and was able to put my growth into words. It made me realize how much confidence I’ve gained and how far I’ve come from when I first started. Being able to share my story honestly showed me that I’m growing not just in skills, but in self-awareness and confidence in who I am becoming.

If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, what would you tell them?
If another teen is thinking about joining the Inspiring Teens Magazine Leadership Challenge but feels unsure, I would tell them to go for it. It’s normal to feel nervous, but growth comes from trying things that push you outside your comfort zone. This experience has helped me build confidence, reflect on my journey, and realize the value of my story. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be willing to try.

Beyond votes or placements, what are you hoping to gain from this experience—and what would make you feel truly successful at the end?
Beyond votes or placements, I hope to gain confidence, self-awareness, and a deeper appreciation for my journey. This experience has already helped me reflect on my growth and share my story in a meaningful way. I want to leave knowing I challenged myself and stepped outside my comfort zone with purpose. I would feel truly successful if I come out of this more confident in who I am and inspired to keep growing and pursuing my goals.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you get where you are today?
I would like to thank my mom and Dad, Andrea Thompson and Curtis Hatfield. I would also like to thank April Moore because without her I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do this.

Michelle Ye - California
Nomination by Diya Mankotia
Photography by Zhen Li
Issue 101 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Michelle Ye is the Co-Founder of Project EDSA, a youth-led organization that embeds eating disorder prevention and support systems in schools. In less than a year, she scaled the organization to over 100 chapters across 15 countries, serving over 100,000 students worldwide. At just the age of 16, she is an inspiring youth changemaker dedicated to uplifting others beyond her own community.

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?
In school, I serve as one of two eleventh-grade representatives on the Judiciary Committee, where I help develop restorative approaches. I am also a member of the Social Entrepreneurship Club and our Bring Change to Mind chapter, advocating for mental health, and a dancer. Outside of academics and extracurriculars, I am a friend who’s easy to talk to and always here for you.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
As of now, I’m pushing myself beyond my comfort zone by putting myself out there, taking on leadership roles, and learning from new experiences. For Project EDSA, I hope that we establish at least one chapter in every U.S. state.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
One individual per 52 minutes die from an eating disorder and one in three youth report lacking reliable access to mental health resources yet less than 10% of schools in the United States offer eating disorder education, leaving teachers unequipped to support students. I am passionate about expanding access to eating disorders and mental health support for youth, and I can talk for hours about how big of an impact awareness and peer support has. This matters to me because without access to resources and support, many students struggle in silence, and I believe no one should have to face that alone.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
Over the past year, I’ve learned that being adaptable and open to new ideas makes my leadership more effective. Adjusting our approach to fit a diverse community helps our system thrive, and this flexibility has strengthened both my leadership and the organization.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
Some of my favorite moments with Diya are being on calls and yapping about the most random things. She’s one of the kindest, sweetest people I know, and I feel so lucky to have her as my friend.

Tell us about the photographer or person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
My mother took the photo, and I am grateful for all the sacrifices, care, and trust she has put into me.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine through Instagram. Being part of it matters to me because it provides a platform to raise awareness about eating disorders and inspire other teams to lead change.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
All funding will go to ANAD and Project EDSA’s initiatives, including our chapters, which will help reach more students and provide greater access to mental health resources and eating disorder support.

Nomination: My name is Rilei Hass, an optimistic and motivated senior with a passion for caring for others. This passion has led me to pursue healthcare, with plans to attend nursing school and become a NICU nurse - a goal made meaningful because I was once a NICU baby. At school, I stay involved through the golf team and organizations such as the National Honor Society, where I enjoy volunteering and serving my community. Outside of school, I love spending time with my friends and family. I am grateful to God for guiding my path and providing me with a lifelong purpose!

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
A goal I am currently working on is graduating high school and starting up college. I am super excited for this new chapter, and I also hope to start nursing school in a couple years!

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I feel very passionate about the phrase, "this too shall pass." It has gotten me through many tough times, and reminds me that no matter how hard a situation may be, it is only temporary. It also helps me remember to be grateful and enjoy every great moment! I believe that this quote could be used in any situation in a positive way.

How did you find your photographer, and what did you enjoy most about your experience working with them?

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
I have gone through an experience this past year that has taught me to be much more selfless. My great grandfather has depended on himself throughout his life up until this past January. He now has to be taken care of by my close family members, and it has completely changed our lifestyle. I've sacrificed a great amount of time to help take care of him, and to give my other family members a break from their hospitality. This situation has helped me learn a lot about myself. It deepens my care for others not just mentally, but physically too!

Kevin Saldivar – Texas
Nomination by Vicente Saldivar
Photography by @mrfrankgphotos
Issue 101 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Throughout his journey, Kevin faced significant challenges, including breaking his collarbone twice within a single year. There were moments when frustration nearly led him to give up on soccer altogether, but fueled by his faith and determination, Kevin returned to the field with renewed vigor. His hard work paid off when he was promoted to Varsity for the playoffs, gaining valuable experience at that level. By his sophomore year, he had established himself as a versatile player on the varsity team, adeptly playing both left and right back, and occasionally taking on the winger position. His efforts were recognized when he earned a spot on the 2nd team all-district for 32-6A. In his junior year, with new coaching staff, Kevin initially found himself not starting, which left him feeling unsatisfied. Kavya Gangasani - California
Nomination & Photography by Bhagya Udumula
Issue 101 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kavya Gangasani is the founder and executive director of Bay Area Medical Explorers, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth to pursue careers in medicine. She has grown the organization to 350+ members across 20+ global chapters, collectively impacting over 400,000 individuals. Kavya has led initiatives including community blood drives, research bootcamps, and global health case study programs, enabling students to engage with real-world challenges. Her work bridges education and service, creating meaningful opportunities for aspiring medical leaders and making a lasting impact on communities worldwide.

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?
Beyond my achievements, what defines me most is my ability to lead with purpose. Through founding Bay Area Medical Explorers, I have learned the importance of taking initiative even when there is no clear path forward. Some key qualities that have shaped my journey with Bay Area Medical Explorers are empathy, strategic thinking, and consistency. These qualities have helped me build strong teams, form meaningful partnerships, and scale our impact effectively. As a result, Bay Area Medical Explorers has grown to over 350 active members, 20+ chapters worldwide, and a collective reach of more than 400,000 individuals to date.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
My most current project is my nonprofit, Bay Area Medical Explorers, a student-led nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth to pursue careers in healthcare. The organization offers structured mentorship, research opportunities, global health case study programs, and more. I am focused on growing our chapters, strengthening our programs, and creating structured initiatives that give students real-world experience. In the long term, I plan to pursue a career in medicine while continuing to create opportunities for others. Ultimately, I hope to create something bigger than myself and open a hospital one day.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I am deeply passionate about the power that young students have to be change-makers. I believe that youth today have the ability to create meaningful impact simply by taking action. One of the most powerful tools that they can utilize is digital platforms, which allow ideas to reach thousands of people instantly. Through these platforms, students can build communities, share knowledge, and take action on issues they care about. This matters to me because I have seen how an idea can grow into something much bigger and inspire others to create positive change as well.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
Throughout my journey with Bay Area Medical Explorers, I have learned that leadership is not about having all the answers, but about adapting to unforeseen circumstances and growing from my mistakes. At first, I believed that perfection was required for action, but I've realized that real progress comes from starting and learning along the way. I have also developed resilience, an essential leadership skill, especially when facing difficult challenges. Most importantly, I believe strong leadership is about responsibility and staying committed to a purpose bigger than yourself.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful things about my mother is her constant support in everything I do. From starting Bay Area Medical Explorers to pursuing new opportunities, she has always believed in me. A favorite memory that means a lot to me is sharing my goals and aspirations with her and seeing her encourage me to take the first step. Her everlasting belief in me has given me the confidence to take risks, grow, and keep moving forward. My mother's love and support have truly made a difference in my journey.

Tell us about the photographer or person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
My mother took my photo for Inspiring Teens Magazine, which made the experience especially meaningful. She made me feel comfortable and confident, and it felt natural being able to share that moment with her. The experience was not just about taking pictures, but also capturing an important part of my journey with someone who has consistently supported me.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine through opportunities that highlight youth entrepreneurship and impact. The magazine's mission stood out to me because it focused on sharing real stories of students making a difference in their communities. The opportunity to be a part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matters to me because it is not only recognition, but also a national platform to inspire others. I hope that my journey can encourage students to take initiative and believe in their potential. I am also excited to connect with a community of driven youth leaders.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
If I were to receive a scholarship from Inspiring Teens Magazine, I would use it to further expand Bay Area Medical Explorers and increase access to our programs. The funding would support research initiatives, service projects, and educational opportunities, allowing us to reach more youth and create positive experiences for them. It would also help grow our chapters and strengthen our impact worldwide. Overall, the support would enable me to continue creating accessible pathways for young students interested in the medical field and scale the organization.

Zoe Furman – Pennsylvania
Nomination & Photography by Albright Studio Photography
Issue 101 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Zoe Furman is a senior at Montgomery Area High School. She not only takes pride in her academics, but her athletics as well. She was an instrumental part in establishing girls wrestling in Lycoming County, and still assists youth wrestling today. At this year's state wrestling competition, Zoe brought home gold. During all of her athletic training, she remains an active member of her church. She is also committed to Edinboro University to continue her athletic and academic career. Her sportsmanship is something all athletes should strive toward — she is nothing short of an amazing role model.
Photography by Albright Studio Photography
What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you'd like readers to know about?
Apart from wrestling I am involved in other sports such as soccer and softball. Aside from athletics I am heavily engaged with multiple clubs and organizations in my school. I am President of the Senior Class, President of LEO Club, Leader in STRONG Student Positivity Leadership Team, Manager of the Broadcasting Program, Member of NHS, Officer of Virtuoso, Counselor at Lycoming County Camp Cadet, and a Youth Mentor in the Raider Reach Out Program. I am also a recipient of the YWCA Young Ladies of Excellence Award.

That is an extraordinary list of roles. How do you decide where to give your time and energy when so much is pulling at you?
Depending on the time of year, each activity and role demands more or less. Certain parts I can take care of throughout the school day, while others take time outside of school. Communication with the different aspects of my life is key to making each of the activities flow smoothly.

You helped establish girls wrestling in all of Lycoming County — something that didn't exist before you. What was the moment you realized this was something you needed to fight for?
Girls that wrestled had existed before me, but they were forced to compete on the boys’ side. Growing up I too competed on the boys’ team, but knowing that many other girls would participate in the sport if it was all girls, was the moment I realized that fighting for our separate sport was an action I wanted to take.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I could talk about wrestling for hours. The way this sport has changed and impacted my life is nothing I could ever replace. Wrestling has made me into the person I am today. My core values intensified and it led me to realize hard work and determination can lead you to success in whatever you decide to commit to.

What is one thing about wrestling that most people misunderstand or don't see from the outside?
The mental and physical demands of wrestling is something only those that partake in the sport understand.

You brought home gold at the state competition this year. Walk us through what that moment felt like — what was going through your mind?
It felt so surreal. Knowing the countless hours of work I put in to achieve that goal paid off, left me speechless.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
I feed off other's energy. Whether it is in a sporting event, a school assignment, or a friendship. I need to feel the positivity and support radiating off you.

Knowing that about yourself — how do you show up for others when their energy is low and they need someone to lean on?
Lending a supportive hand and saying I'm here for you if you need, but never pushing for someone to open up. It's their choice, but everyone deserves a support system.

You mentor younger students through Raider Reach Out. What do you most want them to take away from time spent with you?
No matter what you want to achieve in life, set goals and believe in yourself. You can admit to anything.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
A project I am working on building is a name for myself in videography and photography that deeply impacts my future aspirations, especially throughout college. My dream is to work closely with a collegiate or professional sports team.

What drew you to videography and photography specifically — and how does it connect to your love of sports?
The broadcasting program at my school, which I became heavily involved in as soon as I started high school. I can capture emotions and the physicality of sports through a camera to share with the athlete, their family, and even the world.
You are heading to Edinboro University in the fall. What are you most excited about — and what are you most nervous about?
I am most excited for the independence and bonds I'll create away from home. I am most nervous about the transition from high school to college.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice about stepping into leadership before you felt ready, what would it be?
Go all in. Be confident in yourself and your abilities.

What is one of your favorite memories your photographer, Maddy, who nominated you?
One of my favorite memories with Maddy from Albright Studio Photography was during my very first session with them. It was a senior shoot and I had the ability to bring my goats Pickles and Bubba for a part of it. They are always flexible and try to make anything possible.

Tell us about the photographer or person who took your photo — how did you connect, and what was that experience like?
Albright has taken my photo for elementary wrestling ever since I first started in fourth grade. I had the opportunity to apply to become their senior influencer for the class of 2026 and to my surprise I was chosen. Every interaction with Albright has always been fun and extremely easy going. I had never gotten anything taken like this before and they made it so comfortable and relaxing.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I heard about it through my photographer when Maddy had asked about nominating me. I also learned about it when they posted my photo on their instagram page. It would be amazing to be able to be recognized as an inspiration to others especially compared to those around my age.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
I would use it to ease the financial burden of college. Making it easier to focus on my academics and pursue my collegiate wrestling career. As well as creating an image for myself for future aspirations in photography and videography.

What do you hope readers of Inspiring Teens Magazine take away from your story?
Even when times are challenging and you feel that life is telling you to give up. Don't. See through those adversities and become a better and stronger version of yourself.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
To work with a professional sports team, taking photos and videos to put together for content.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
My family is my support system, they're always there for me no matter what. My teachers, who push me to become a better person despite those who root against me. My coaches, have stuck by my side through injury and health.

Maria Garcia - Texas
Nomination by Crystal Garcia
Photography by Hayly Hext Photography
Issue 101 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Maria Garcia known as Angelica is a beautiful smart young woman. She is a natural born leader who is very mature for her age. She is very comfortable and confident in her own skin. She makes her own path even if it is hard. She is a hard worker who has had a job since the age of 15 while going to school and doing well. She has a strong relationship with God and knows that all things are done through him. She will lend a helping hand without hesitation with nothing in return. She will be attending Houston Christian University this fall. Her major is Mathematics and a double minor in business and biochemistry. Her dream is to become a dentist in the hopes of owning her own practice. She will also be the first in her family on both mom and dad's side to attend college.

Photography by Hayly Hext Photography

You are about to become the first person on both sides of your family to attend college. When that reality hits you — really hits you — what does it feel like?
It's honestly a mix of fear and excitement. It's scary stepping into something no one in my family has done, not really having anyone to relate to. At the same time, it's a new adventure and a chance to set an example for my future family. There is definitely pressure; I don't want to be the first to go to college and not finish. I want to be successful. But there's also pride in knowing I've already come farther than anyone before me, which makes it feel both overwhelming and motivating.

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you’d like readers to know about?
One thing not mentioned in the nomination is my entrepreneurial drive. While balancing school and work, I also started my own home baking business, where I create and sell pastries and desserts. Running my business has taught me valuable lessons in responsibility, customer service, budgeting, and time management. It has also shown me the importance of discipline and perseverance when working toward a goal. I am someone who challenges myself to grow and pursue opportunities that will help me build a better future. Whether through education, work, or entrepreneurship, I strive to lead by example and show others that determination and hard work can create opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

What is the best part of running your own business? What is the most challenging?
The best part of running my own business is the freedom to innovate. I have full creative control and use social media as an inspiration, allowing my creativity to shine through my baking. The most challenging part is doing everything on my own and not knowing everything. I've made mistakes and had to redo a lot, sometimes realizing them too late. Learning and adjusting throughout the process has been the hardest part.

What has working since age 15 taught you about money, responsibility, or people that your peers who haven't worked yet might not understand?
Since I started working at 15, I've learned how important saving money really is. You hear about it, but you don't understand it until you experience how quickly money can be spent and how to manage it wisely. Working also helped me grow as a person and a leader by giving me responsibility at a young age. I've learned to adapt to different people even when it's challenging. Having a job teaches maturity, time management, and how to balance work, school, and life, something many people don't fully understand until they've experienced it themselves.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
Currently, I am working toward graduating from high school and preparing to attend Houston Christian University this fall. I plan to major in mathematics with minors in business and biochemistry as I work toward my long-term goal of becoming a dentist and eventually owning my own dental practice. I am also continuing to grow my small baking business, which has helped me develop skills in entrepreneurship, time management, and customer service. Balancing school, work, and my business has taught me the importance of discipline and perseverance. Overall, my main focus right now is preparing for college, continuing to grow personally and academically, and building the foundation for the career and life I hope to create in the future.

Mathematics, business, and biochemistry — that is an ambitious combination. How does someone who loves baking and wants to be a dentist end up falling in love with math?
I've loved math since I was young. It was always my favorite subject. I was always the kid who enjoyed math class and even did multiplication tables for fun. I've always liked how there's a clear right answer but also multiple ways to get there. That challenge and logic have always fascinated me.

Your baking business is already teaching you things most business school students learn years later. What is one lesson from running it that surprised you?
Marketing has been one of the most important and surprising parts of running my at-home bakery. Without a storefront, people only find me through word of mouth or social media. Learning to run a professional Instagram page, not just scroll, has been a big adjustment. I thought proof profits would be the hardest part, but marketing, promoting myself, and maintaining a consistent image take a lot of work. I've also had to learn budgeting, streamline orders, and find the best payment methods. It's not easy, but it's essential for growing a business.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
One thing I am truly passionate about is my faith and my Catholic religion. My relationship with God is a part of who I am, and it guides the way I live my life and make decisions. I could talk for hours about how faith provides strength, purpose, and direction, especially during challenging times. My faith matters so much to me because it reminds me to serve others with kindness, humility, and compassion. It encourages me to work hard, stay grounded, and trust that God has a plan for my life. I strive to carry these values with me in everything I do, whether it is helping others, pursuing my education, or working toward my future goals.

How did you find your photographer, Hayly Hext from Hayly Hext Photography, and what did you enjoy most about your experience working with them?
I found my photographer, Hayly Hext, because she has been my family’s photographer for many years. Over time, she has captured many important moments for us, so working with her always feels very natural.
What I enjoy most about working with her is how comfortable she makes everyone feel. Our sessions are always fun and relaxed. It honestly feels like you are just hanging out with her, and she just happens to be taking photos at the same time. That atmosphere makes it easy to be yourself, which I think really shows in the photos she captures.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
One of my favorite things about my mom is how she has always supported and believed in me. She has been there through every stage of my life, encouraging me to work hard, stay strong in my faith, and pursue my goals even when things feel challenging. Some of my favorite memories are the everyday moments we share, talking, laughing, and just spending time together. What means the most to me is knowing that no matter what I’m going through, she will always be there for me. Her love, guidance, and support have played a huge role in shaping the person I am today.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I first heard about Inspiring Teens Magazine through my photographer, Hayly Hext. Being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matters to me because it highlights young people who are working hard to pursue their goals and make a difference. It is meaningful to be part of something that celebrates ambition, leadership, and personal growth, and it is inspiring to see other teens who are also striving to build a better future.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it, and what goals would it help support?
If I were to receive this scholarship, I would use it to help pay for my college education. Coming from a low-income family, the financial pressure of college has always been something my family and I have thought about. This scholarship would help ease that burden not only for me but also for my parents, who have always worked hard to support me. It would allow me to focus more on my education and continue working toward my goal of becoming a dentist and eventually owning my own practice.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
In the past year, I have learned the importance of trusting God’s timing and the path He has for me. I used to feel like I needed to control everything and figure every step out on my own. Over time, I realized that the more I tried to force things, the more lost I felt. I have learned that life is about trusting the process, letting go of what you cannot control, and continuing to work hard while having faith that everything will happen when it is meant to.

Letting go of control is something most adults spend decades learning. What finally made it click for you?
This past summer taught me a lot about letting go of control. Through my own experiences and those of my friends, I've realized that working hard and dreaming big don't guarantee outcomes. As someone who likes things done a certain way, it was a reality check to accept that I couldn't control everything. I've learned to trust the process and have faith, even though I still struggle with it 90% of the time. Often have to remind myself to relax, let go, and trust that I've done all I can.

When you imagine yourself as Dr. Garcia, standing in your own dental practice someday, what does that moment feel like — and who is the first person you picture telling?
It feels surreal just thinking about it. I get chills. There aren’t many Hispanic female dentists, so imagining myself there is incredible. The idea of having my name on the door and patients coming to me is both exciting and motivating. All the sacrifices studying instead of going out, the effort my family and I have made, will be worth it. That vision drives me to become Dr. Garcia. And without a doubt, the first person I’d tell is my mom, because she’s supported me through every step, decision, and doubt.

Houston Christian University is a faith-based institution, and that clearly aligns with who you are. What made it the right fit beyond just the academic programs?
The people and culture made me feel welcome from the moment I stepped on campus; it truly felt like a home away from home. Talking to friends who moved away, I realized that gut feeling matters, and this just felt right. It’s one of the first major decisions I’ve made on my own, stepping into adulthood and a new chapter of life. Even though my home is eight hours away, I know I’ve found another one. I’m proud and excited to say I’ll be attending Houston Christian University in Fall 2026.

If a young Latina girl who comes from a family where college was never part of the conversation reads this interview, what do you want her to walk away believing about herself?
I want you to take a moment and be proud of yourself. If you’re reading this or even exploring your options, you’re already one step ahead. Your past or your family’s path doesn’t define you; you control your future. To any young Latina thinking about what’s next, know that whatever you want, you can achieve. Remember that pressure is a privilege and striving for perfection leads to excellence. Be proud of your skin, your heritage, and your culture. When asked who you are, say it with confidence. I’m proud to be here, and I hope you are too.

What is a tradition with your mom that you hope never ends?
To be honest, we don’t have many traditions, mostly typical Hispanic ones like making tamales at Christmas and spending holidays together. But what I truly hope never changes is the relationship I have with my mom. She’s the person I share everything with, my accomplishments, struggles, and everyday life, and I’m that person for her too. We support and give each other advice, and I hope that bond stays strong no matter the distance or where life takes me. No matter what, she’ll always be my mom, and I know she’ll always be there for me.

What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
My dream job is to own three dental practices. Ideally, I’d love for them to be here in Lubbock, but honestly, as long as I’m happy, I don’t mind where I end up.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
I’d like to thank God above all for giving me so many opportunities and allowing me to grow into who I am today. I truly believe He has placed me on the right path. I’m also incredibly grateful for my parents, who have sacrificed so much and made changes in their lives to give me the best opportunities possible.

Catherine Hoff – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Olivia Henry Photography
Issue 100 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Catherine is such an inspiring teen with the kindest heart and a passion for so many things. She stays busy with sports, Dual credit classes, clinicals at the hospital, church and volunteer work, 4H, creative hobbies and even works two jobs, all while being a light to the people around her!

What inspiring qualities or accomplishments weren’t highlighted in your nomination?
Some inspiring qualities and accomplishments that weren't highlighted in my nomination were: I am CPR and CNA (Certified Nursing Aid) certified while also currently taking courses to become a PCT (Patient Care Technician). I am in many sports such as volleyball, cheerleading, golf, and softball. Along with these, I also paint and bake. Baking and painting are just a few of my hobbies but these aren't just hobbies. I have auctioned off a few of my masterpieces as well as my baked goods.

What current goals and/or projects are you working on now?
A current project that I am working on is to obtain my PCT (Patient Care Technician) certification. I am also working to accomplish my goal of growing in my faith and becoming more like a Proverbs 31 woman. My current goals for my future are to become a trauma surgeon, get married, have many beautiful children, and live on a ranch that my husband and I built from the ground up.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Something I am very passionate about is my Bible. I could talk about my Bible and Jesus all day! I love Jesus and I am so thankful that I know him and I pray that everyone gets the chance to know him and feel his presence. Jesus died on the cross for us so that we may live for him!

How did you find your photographer and what did you love most about the experience?
How I found my photographer (Olivia Henry) was through instagram. I have always talked about wanting to be a part of a Senior Rep Modeling Team, and Olivia was the first one that came up on my feed. I looked into her and at all of her amazing pictures on her page and quickly realized she was the one I wanted to take my pictures. I 100% recommend joining one of her amazing teams or getting pictures taken by her! She is amazing and she walks you through everything while making you feel so confident!

What is a favorite memory with or thoughts of the person who nominated you?
The person that nominated me was my photographer, Olivia Henry. Olivia makes me feel so confident! I am usually not very good in front of a camera but when she was on the other side of it, I felt like a model. As she takes pictures she throws compliments left and right, making us feel so good about ourselves. Her pictures also look natural and don't look airbrushed. I love getting my pictures back and I still look like myself while also looking so much more confident. She is amazing!

Why do you want to be in Inspiring Teens Magazine?
I would love the opportunity to be in the inspiring teens magazine because I have always dreamed of being a model and this is really close to meeting that dream. I also love the idea behind this magazine because it's all about potential and creativity. This is an amazing opportunity that I really hope to be a part of.

If you win a scholarship, what will you do with the money?
If I win a scholarship from this amazing opportunity the money would go straight to my college. If I have scholarship money left over from a semester then I will invest that money in the money market so that I could make more money for the next semester. My ultimate goal is to become a trauma surgeon. I will be paying for my college on my own and I am hoping to obtain enough scholarships to be able to afford it.

Ava Reynier – Texas
Nomination by Kenzi Valiant
Photography by Jennifer Bourne Photography
Issue 101 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ava Reynier is a senior in high school as well as a soldier in the Texas Army National Guard. She also is a volunteer firefighter during her free time. She commits so much time into her community it's inspiring.
Photography by Jennifer Bourne Photography

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you'd like readers to know about?
I am currently a high school senior and have already completed Basic Training with the Army National Guard, where I am training to become a Military Police officer. I will return this summer following graduation to complete my Advanced Individual Training (AIT). I have also been a volunteer firefighter for over a year now and was part of the JROTC program with my school for the past 3.5 years. After completing my training, I plan to return home, get married to my high school sweetheart, and relocate to Hawaii to attend Hawaii Pacific University, where I will pursue a degree in Criminal Justice.

What was the moment during Basic Training when you surprised yourself the most?
The gas chamber made me realize that, despite the fact that certain tasks may seem arduous, they can be manageable by my own perseverance, grit, and determination.
What does a typical week actually look like for you with prom and graduation - and finals coming up?
Although prom has become something that many girls my age are rapidly excited about, I will be going to drill with the National Guard instead. With adulthood quick around the corner, it's great to know what your priorities are, and mine just so happen to lie with my duty to my country.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
My long-term goal is to transition to active duty and serve as a K9 officer. I ultimately aspire to become a recruiter, where I can guide and mentor individuals my age in pursuing a career in the military. Additionally, I am interested in exploring future opportunities in law enforcement, including serving as a sheriff's officer.

What is it about working with and guiding others that keeps pulling you in that direction?
Helping others has always been a passion as well as a hobby of mine; I do it in any way I can, every day that I can. The first time that I interacted with the police force and the sheriff's department, in that moment, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that helping others and being of service to my community was what I was meant to do. That certainty has remained with me since and has not faltered as I chose my career in military police.

When you imagine yourself as a military recruiter someday sitting across from a teenager who is unsure if they are capable enough — what do you tell them?
I will tell them that they are capable of anything and everything that they put their mind to, so long as they have the determination to pull through it, and the dedication to stick around once they do.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
I have a limitless sense of personal pride for both military service and firefighting. Both paths in public service are what I would consider to be the definition of a calling, as they reflect my drive, discipline, and strong commitment to serving and protecting others, that is what it is to have purpose.

Military service and firefighting both require you to run toward danger while everyone else runs away. Where does that instinct come from in you?
I have a firm belief that my instinct to put myself in harm's way in service of others is innate, it comes from my soul, its deeprooted in who I am as an individual and it cannot be changed.

Volunteer firefighting is physically and emotionally demanding work. What has responding to a real emergency taught you that no training could have prepared you for?
Life is shorter than you realize, longer than you notice, and can be changed in one day, night, week, afternoon, but more importantly, it can be changed in a moment. One singular moment can define birthdays, holidays, Tuesday breakfasts with your kid, your friends, your parents. Volunteer firefighting has taught me to be grateful for the life that god has awarded me, because at any time it could be changed, permanently.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
I have learned that I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to — the sky is not the limit. Completing Basic Training while still in high school was one of the most challenging experiences I have ever faced, and it pushed me to grow in discipline, resilience, and confidence.

You said the sky is not the limit — and you clearly mean it. Where did that belief come from, and was there a specific moment it became real for you?
The belief that the sky isn't the limit came from a talk with my Drill Sergeant in basic training, who told us that whatever we put our minds to, to go bigger and beyond that. That's why I truly believe, and know, that the sky isn't and never will be the limit.

You are about to graduate, get married, complete AIT, and move to Hawaii — all within what sounds like a very short window. How do you stay grounded when everything is changing at once?
I remind myself that God laid out a purpose for me in this life. Every day is a graded challenge that I strive to live up to and succeed in. It aids me in getting through each day as a better person than the day before.

JROTC for 3.5 years clearly laid a foundation for everything that came after. What did it give you that you did not expect when you first signed up?
Comradery in my friendships that I gained along the way, discipline in my person, and a path in which to lead my life.

If a teenage girl who feels like she is not strong enough, not disciplined enough, or not ready reads this interview — what do you want her to walk away believing about herself?
Your path is not set in stone. You may not be who you thought you were going to be when you were a little girl, you may not even be who you thought you were going to be when you woke up this morning. There is a simple fact of life, and that is this: you need to roll with the punches. You don't get to know every challenge in life before it comes, but you do get to choose how you combat it.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
My best friend kiki means everything to me. Though we are not related by blood, she is truly my sister. Nearly every memory I have since second grade includes her, and both she and her family have played a significant role in shaping the person I am today.

How did you find your photographer, and what did you enjoy most about your experience working with them?
My photographer was originally referred to my mom in 2023 by the wife of her late boss. We traveled five hours to work with Jennifer, as she is truly an exceptional photographer who made my sister shine during her senior photos. From the very first meeting, she created an atmosphere that was both welcoming and comfortable. When it came time for my own senior pictures, my family could not imagine choosing anyone else.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine?
My Kiki follows your magazine on Instagram and is always sharing posts with me. When she texted to tell me she had nominated me, I felt truly honored—though it’s exactly the kind of thoughtful and supportive gesture I’ve come to expect from her.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
This scholarship would provide meaningful financial support as I pursue my education at Hawaii Pacific University, where the cost of living is significantly higher. Hawaii is also where my fiancé is currently stationed, and being able to continue my education and pursue my military career while remaining close to him is incredibly important to me.

Tabitha Young - Florida
Nomination & Photography by Ryan Mitchinson
Issue 101 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Tabitha is amazing. She is the sweetest person that any photographer could ever work with. Currently, she is finishing her Freshman year at Florida Southern College, where she has had the great privilege of being on the school's cheer team. She is very talented with her writing and poetry skills. Hopefully soon, she will have her first book published. Even though she is super smart and skilled at such a wide variety of things, she never acts on it and is the most humble girl ever. Anyone who knows her is very lucky.

What inspiring qualities, achievements, or experiences about you were not mentioned in your nomination that you'd like readers to know about?
Moving to Florida alone has been one of my biggest achievements. Here, I get to experience new cities, new people, and college. Florida Southern College has been completely different from high school. It has been something very new to me. It has been so amazing, thus far. I have also been able to experience what it is like to be surrounded by people who care about their education. I get to be around people that I get to share my passions that they also have as well.

Moving somewhere new and alone takes a kind of quiet courage most people don't talk about. What was the hardest moment in that transition, and what got you through it?
I do not think I have fully gotten through moving to Florida on my own. It still scares me even after eight months. I think that knowing I still have a long life to live has definitely helped me. Moving to Florida is not the last chapter in my life and I am excited to get to explore the next chapter that is coming.

You went from your hometown to Florida on your own. Who was the first person you called when you realized you were actually going to be okay?
I know for certain that I called my mother. I call her almost every day, sometimes multiple times. I know it was hard for her knowing her youngest was moving away. I like to reassure her that I am okay and my life is going the way I had hoped and prayed for it to go.

What goals, dreams, or projects are you currently working toward right now?
Currently, I am working on trying to get my first poetry book published. This is something I have been wanting to do for a very long time. I am honored to be able to work with my photographer, Ryan, to create a book full of poetry and photos he has taken. I hope that this book could touch others and possibly encourage them to take the chance to get their name out in the world, even at a young age.

A poetry book paired with photography is a beautiful and bold concept. What does Ryan's photography bring out in your writing that you couldn't get to on your own?
I think that Ryan’s photography brings vision to my poetry. Poetry can be hard for readers to picture and visualize. Adding photos helps bring the stories alive when they are a little complicated to understand. But, working with Ryan has been a dream. We both want the same things for each other. I am super grateful to get to work with him.

What kind of poetry do you write — and is there a poem you've written that felt like it cracked something open in you when you finished it?
I write all kinds of poetry. I do not think it was a poem I wrote, but reading poetry is what opened something in me. I find beauty in little things. Poetry is just that. Poetry can tell a whole story in such little details. Sometimes the best things come in small packages, and poetry is one of the best things.

You said you hope the book encourages others to put their name out in the world at a young age. What would you say to a teenager who has something to say but is too afraid to say it publicly?
There is never a right time to do something. Time is fleeting and limited. Fear is a psychological concept that has to be overcome. Being afraid and backing down from it is letting fear win. Nobody deserves to live their life in fear and to always be afraid. I am afraid. I am so incredibly terrified of putting my name in the world, but I want to concur my own life instead of letting fear control it. Take control of your life. Do not let anything ever stop you from holding back.

If your published book ends up in the hands of a quiet teenager who feels unseen, what do you hope she feels when she closes it?
I hope that anyone, child, teenager, or adult who feels unseen and reads my book, feels seen. That they feel like they are not alone. I used to believe that I was alone and I had no place, but I know that is not true. I have met people with similar stories and similar feelings. Whenever you feel unseen just remember there are others sitting somewhere feeling the same way.

What is something you feel passionate about or could talk about for hours, and why does it matter so much to you?
One thing I am extremely passionate about is cheerleading. It is something I have been doing since I was young. Cheering in college has been my favorite thing I have ever gotten to do, especially in my freshman year. Cheer has, for the longest time, been my purpose for living. I am thankful for my freshman year team that took me and treated me like family. I am even more thankful for my coach for taking a chance on me, even when I was lower-skilled than many others. A big thank you to my team and my coach.

Your coach took a chance on you when you were lower-skilled than others. What do you think she saw in you that made her say yes?
When I first decided Florida Southern College might be the next chapter in my life, I immediately reached out to my coach. I put myself out there because I knew the worst thing that could happen was my coach saying no. When I met her, she asked me to try different things, and even though I was scared, I never said no. Since then, anything she has asked me to do or try I never say no. I work for everything that I have learned and gained from being a part of the team.

Being welcomed by a college cheer team as a freshman is not guaranteed. What did it feel like to be treated like family by people who had no obligation to make you feel that way?
I was extremely overjoyed. In the past, I felt like I was missing the family part in my old cheer teams. Coming here and feeling like I am a part of a family filled that missing piece that I was lacking. I am extremely grateful to my team, but I am extremely sad that I am losing part of my family due to some of them graduating. They will always be part of my cheer family, but I am excited to get to add new members of the family next year.

What is something you have learned about yourself as a leader or person in the past year?
In the past year, I have found my voice. I have learned that I am much more willing to speak up and participate in groups than I was in high school. In high school, I often stayed quiet because I was so worried about being judged by my classmates. That fear made it harder to speak, even when I wanted to. Now, I feel so much more comfortable speaking and expressing my ideas in group settings. Florida Southern College has helped me figure out my voice and that people do not really judge others for having ideas.

Finding your voice after years of holding it back is a big shift. Was there a specific moment at Florida Southern where you spoke up and thought — oh, that's who I actually am?
I do not think there was a specific moment, but speaking up and participating in classes, especially when I am wrong has definitely helped. Every single one of us in the classes are taking the class for the first time. We are all on the same level. I know that other people are scared about speaking up or participating which makes me feel better because I am not alone.

Humility is one of the first things people notice about you. But finding your voice and being humble aren't always easy to hold together. How do you balance speaking up with staying grounded?
Speaking up when knowing the time is right, but also listening to others. Having a voice is not a reason to disregard other’s voices. Making sure you listen and understand other’s opinions and ideas helps a lot.

You write poetry, you cheer, you moved across the country alone, and now you're finding your voice in groups. Which of those feels most like the real Tabitha — and why?
I do not think a single one makes me feel like the real Tabitha. I feel free when I get to use my voice when I get to write poetry. Moving to a new place is something I got to do and achieve, not who I am. I am a cheerleader and have been for the longest time, but there is more to me than just that. I am me, but I am still learning who the real me is. Poetry, cheering, moving, and my voice are just little things that are helping me discover myself.

What is one of your favorite memories with the person who nominated you, or something about them that means a lot to you?
My favorite memory with my photographer, Ryan, is getting to travel with him to Alabama. I was able to take him to Noccalula Falls, located in Gadsden, Alabama. Ryan is very big on nature and getting the chance to use his photography skills to be able to capture the beauty it holds. It means a lot to me that he cares so deeply about his photography, that it is more than just a passion to him. While he already knows a lot about photography, he continues to expand his knowledge by taking photography classes.

How did you find your photographer, and what did you enjoy most about your experience working with them?
I met my photographer at Florida Southern College. He is a sophomore, hoping to build his photography company. We just happened to meet randomly on campus. Even though he is my photographer, the thing I enjoyed most about working with him is the friendship we have built through our work together. Being around the same age, we were able to connect well together, making the experience extremely fun and memorable.

How did you first hear about Inspiring Teens Magazine? Why does being part of Inspiring Teens Magazine matter to you?
I found out about Inspiring Teens Magazine through girls in my hometown being nominated for the magazine. I want to be a part of Inspiring Teens Magazine because it highlights young people who are working towards their goals. Being featured gives me the chance to share my story and inspire other teens who may relate to my story. I think it is important for teens to see that their voices, ideas, and accomplishments do matter. Being a part of the magazine would not only be an honor but also an opportunity to encourage others.

If you win a scholarship through Inspiring Teens Magazine, how would you plan to use it and what goals would it help support?
If I won the scholarship, I would put the money into getting my first poetry book published. It would support my goal of becoming a published author before graduating from college. This is something that I have been dreaming of doing since I was a little kid.
What is your ideal dream job if it were offered to you today?
My ideal dream job is a little complicated. My dream is to become a big name author but I would also love to be a youtuber that gets to make videos for people to enjoy.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping you to get where you are today?
I want to thank my mother for being there, for always answering my calls (sometimes), and always listening to me when I need to cry. I also want to thank my cheer coach for taking me in and giving me a family that I never had before. But I also want to thank my cat Rosie Bug, who helped me get through high school and helping me get through college. I want to be able to give her the world because she has given me her world.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Honestly, I am probably at cheer practice, or in bed reading, writing, and thinking about cheer.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Publishing a book.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Moving away from my cat, Rose. I did it by knowing that I am making a better life for her and me.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

The weirder you are the better.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I most likely will be in graduate school.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?

Exploring new places.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can chug a Sprite without burping

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel everywhere, become a published author, eat a crab boil.

Who do you find inspiring?

My cheer coach.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

I do not have a fear of being judged.
