Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Laney is the definition of inspiring. You will fall in love with her infectious smile and gorgeous personality instantaneously. She is a member of National Honors Society, Student Council, FCA, and HOSA president. Laney received her CPR and Trauma Response certification while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is attending the University of Tennessee at Knoxville this fall, where she has been accepted to the nursing program. Laney plans to become a forensic nurse.

Picture

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be interviewed about why I decided to become a nurse! I had a spinal fusion to correct scoliosis at age 13 and experienced firsthand the impact that nurses have on patients and their recoveries!

Tell us more about that and the impact it had on your decision.
Having a spinal correction at 13 entailed a five-day hospital stay. I was young, in pain, and terrified. The nurses I interacted with all brought positivity and motivation to my room when they entered. I always ask lots of questions when doing new things and each nurse that took care of me was extremely patient and answered every question I had. I knew after that hospital stay that I wanted to be a nurse so that I could care for and ease anxiousness for someone the same way it was done for me.

What are you doing now to help prepare for this career?
I have been accepted to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s nursing program! I also have taken several honors sciences courses throughout my high school career, as well as two health science pathway courses.

What did you have to do to prepare for the CPR and Trauma Response certification?
To prepare for the CPR certification, I studied long hours and practiced CPR hands-on. It was a stressful period, especially when it was test time, but I am thankful for my knowledge and ability to save a life if needed! Becoming Trauma Response certified required weekly courses for 8 weeks. My class and I watched instructional videos and then had open discussions about the topics covered. This class broadened my perspective of how childhood trauma impacts a child’s life into adulthood.

Why did you choose forensic nurse specifically?
I chose forensic nursing specifically because I want to be an advocate for patients who are not always in the position to speak up for themselves. Everyone deserves to have a voice, even if that person feels weak and helpless.

Why did you choose KEngland Photography for your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose KEngland Photography for part of my senior pictures because I absolutely adore her work! We had an amazing time on my family farm taking pictures. I love how adventurous Kristen is! A dream of mine was to have pictures done with the cattle I had bottle-fed on our farm, and she got in the pasture with me and made it happen!

What do you love most about being in NHS?
Through NHS, I can serve my community in many ways. I love doing service projects with NHS (National Honors Society) because it brings me out of my comfort zone to do things that benefit others. This past fall, our NHS Chapter renovated the landscaping at our high school’s football field. The repairs were much needed, and our fans were able to enjoy them for the football season!

What will you miss most about being on student council?
I will miss all the people I met through student council. Our student council is composed of grades 9-12, and the members change every year. I was able to meet students that I did not have classes with and make friendships I otherwise wouldn’t have made!

What is FCA and what do you do in it?
FCA is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Once a week, we meet in the mornings before school and have a devotional. The students that attend can cultivate friendships with other Christians and study God’s word. FCA has been the perfect midweek study to motivate members to stay faithful in their Christian walk.

What was your biggest leadership role as president of HOSA?
As president of HOSA, I have been responsible for leading meetings, delegating tasks, and coordinating with our club sponsor. My biggest leadership role as president is organizing blood drives! RedCross comes to our school quarterly, and I help our sponsor assign club members to work the blood drive and make sure it runs smoothly.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is my ability to jump in and take charge while staying calm. I believe that every problem has a solution, even if the solution is unexpected and unprepared for.

What have you learned about yourself being in these leadership positions?
Through my involvement in clubs and leadership positions that I work extremely well under pressure. Though I do get stressed out, I am able to rise to the challenge and get the job done. I am thankful for these experiences and for the many learning opportunities I had through these leadership positions!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my spare time, I work on my family's farm. The calf in my nomination photo, Daisy Belle, was a calf that was born during a snowstorm. She was almost frozen when my Daddy and I found her. We worked together to nurse her back to health, and she is doing amazing now! I had always liked animals but working with my Daddy to keep her alive gave me a new love for cattle and agriculture altogether.

What is the best part of living on a farm that people who don't may not realize?
Many people do not realize that living on a farm gives you an entirely different perspective on life. Hardwork has an extremely different meaning on a farm, and anyone who farms understands exactly what I mean. I learned how to be patient with animals that cannot communicate their needs like humans, and to care for animals and equipment that many do not understand.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers, I would discuss the importance of kindness. Bullying, comparison, and social media impact the way we see ourselves every day. By creating a positive environment and mindset, we can cultivate a better society for the upcoming generation to live in.

Myah Smith – Wisconsin
Nomination & Photography by Jodi Smith
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Myah Smith is inspiring because she has ambitions that have propelled into being a leader and role model. She has been drag racing since she was 11 and I have seen for myself how she inspires younger female racers with her confidence, humbleness and kindness. Myah has been the FFA President at her school for two years. She has also decided to become a police officer in her future. I cannot say enough of what an inspiration Myah is. She shows that girls can be leaders and role models, no matter what the circumstances are.

Photography by Jodi Smith

How did you get started in drag racing?

My dad is the one who got me interested in drag racing. We attended a national event in Brainerd, MN where they run the cars that you watch on tv when I was 11 years old. They ran Jr. Dragsters at the event, and that is where I showed the biggest amount of interest to start racing. One thing lead to another, and now I have been racing for 7 years.

What is your favorite thing about racing?
Drag racing is all about the family atmosphere. Everyone at the track is one big family. If you need an extra part, someone has one. If you need someone to talk to, someone is always there. If you just need somewhere to relax from a long race day, someone will always open their motor home or trailer for you.

What is the hardest thing about racing?
The hardest part about racing is seeing the younger racers use the same discipline I use on myself. Knowing what you did wrong and taking blame for your own mistakes is a huge part of racing, and how to be a successful racer. Seeing the little ones being hard on themselves is definitely something I do not like witnessing, but I know that it is necessary.

What is something about racing that people who don't race may not understand?
People who do not race probably do not understand that it is not just a press the throttle and go kind of thing. There is a lot of things that happen behind the scenes to try and get the car to run consistent. The weather also plays a huge factor on the way the engine will run.

What is a proud moment for you from racing?
A proud moment in racing for me is when I won my first ever race. The amount of support I get from my parents especially, made the first win feel that much better.

What is your next big goal in racing?
Since I age out of the Jr. Dragster after this coming season, my dad and I have plans to build up a Mustang so that both of us can race it. I will be in college next year, so we will try to make it to the racetrack whenever we have a chance to.

What was your experience like with Jodi Smith Photography? What did you love most about it?
Jodi is my aunt, so it makes shoots very comfortable and relaxing. I love that she tries and is willing to come up with new things to differ her shots from everyone else.

What made you decide to become a police officer?
I decided to become a police officer due to being interested in law enforcement for a long time. I am the kind of person who is always willing to help and wants to make sure everyone is always in a good place.

What training will you need first?
I will get my associates degree in Criminal Justice Studies starting next fall, and then I will immediately take the law enforcement academy through the same school afterwards.

What are you doing now to help you succeed as a police officer?
Currently, I am doing a mentorship program that my school puts on. I am at my local Sheriff's Department, every morning of the school week. I get to experience all the parts of the Sheriff's Department and get to have the opportunity to get a head start to my chosen career.

Picture
Photography by Jodi Smith

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is having patience with new learners. Taking racing as an example, I will do whatever it takes to help the little ones succeed in something they enjoy doing so much, no matter how long it takes.

What is it like being FFA President?
I have been my chapter's FFA President my junior, and senior year of high school. Currently I am a senior in high school, so it is my last year in FFA. I love being able to take lead on planning certain events and seeing them pan out the way I had hoped.

What else should we know about you?
I love people and socializing. I love to be a part of a group and hanging out with friends and family. You learn from others when you step out of your comfort zone and talk to people. I have learned so much by doing this and hope others have been able to do the same when speaking with me. I also want people to know it’s okay to not be liked by everyone, sometimes you just aren’t someone’s “cup of tea” and that is okay. God made everyone in His image and we are all made for a unique purpose.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am also a part of the ANCHOR club at my school. The ANCHOR club is a volunteer service programs and helps with leadership-building opportunities. This gives me another great way I can learn from others while serving the community.

I like to hunt and fish. The fish and game I harvested has been utilized to feed my family and others in our community. It has been a big part of our family for generations.

What leadership opportunities have you had?
Some leadership opportunities are that I have helped with classes in the church nursery and children’s church for a few years. I am also a part of the JHS’s Anchor Club that has given me ample leadership opportunities.

What do you like to hunt and fish for? What is a favorite memory from one or the other?
I love to hunt deer mostly. I love to fish for several kinds of fish but bream fishing has to be my most favorite. My favorite memory of fishing is going with my grandparents and catching close to 100 bream. My favorite memory of hunting is killing a 7 point with my dad. It was the biggest buck I have killed to date.

Katelyn Patterson – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Katelyn inspires to look and be her best and strives to live a happy life! She does all she can to avoid the negativity that life can throw at you and tries to always keep a good attitude. She has always been a determined girl that works hard to get what she wants. She pushes through struggles and look for the positive side of things. When she became involved with FFA, she found a love for showing livestock. Through hard work and determination over the past 4 years, she was able to achieve many goals.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography
What would you like to talk about?
My love for FFA and showing livestock but also, I really enjoy helping the younger members gain their passion for FFA.

How did you get started in FFA?
In my 8th grade year, I wanted to do Cosmetology in High School. However, when it came time to choose my classes for my freshman year, I discovered I couldn’t take Cosmetology until my Junior year, so I happened to pick an Ag Class. Taking this class opened an entirely new experience for me.

What type of livestock do you show? Why did you choose these animals?
My freshman year I choose to only show a lamb, this was my first time ever work with Livestock. I choose a lamb because I was under the impression it could be one of the more challenging animals to work with, and I was up for the challenge. My sophomore year I decided to increase my challenge by showing Lambs, Goat, Rabbits, and Heifer. I choose to work with 4 different species of livestock to increase my knowledge.

How do you prep your livestock for show?
The most important thing about showing any type of livestock is their nutrition, I worked long hours with my Ag teachers to make sure I was providing proper feeding and any other supplements they may have needed. I would also have to bathe, clip and work and work their fir/wool/hair. I would also have to work with them every day so that they would learn what they needed to do in the show ring.
Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What is the hardest thing about showing?
No 2 animals are alike. Just because one style worked for one doesn’t mean it will work for the other. You have to learn how to handle your animal.

What goes into showing livestock that people who don't may not realize?
When showing livestock, you get close to your animal however you have to remember that most of these animals are market animals and there for are meant to be sold after I have worked with them for many months. It’s not easy to do but you learn it’s the circle of life.

How do you get to help younger members?
Every year new people join FFA, we will have new members in the Ag barn who have never worked with an animal that will struggle. Anytime I see someone that is struggling I will offer to help them and work with them until they fill like they are understanding better. I let everyone know that if they need help to just ask and I’ll will make time for them, no matter if they are new or old and just want to try something different.

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Read Photography?
Last year a friend was a member of Angie Read Photography’s Power Team for seniors, and I loved all the pictures that she had. I asked her to let me know how I could join when the time came.

What did you love most about your photoshoots?
The photoshoots are very relaxing and fun. I fill totally at ease working with Angie and the picture always look great.

What will you miss most about being on her team?
I will miss the photoshoots and working with Angie and the other team members to get great pictures.

Where would we find you if not raising/showing livestock or modeling for Angie Read Photography?
Working, I have worked numerous jobs of the past 2 years to help pay for my livestock and to also just have extra money for myself.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
No matter how difficult things are my faith, determination and passion helped me achieve my goals while not giving up.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I accomplished was to finally win a showmanship belt buckle for Lambs. I was always told I was too tall to ever win. But working with my Ag teacher I was able to finally win the award this year.

Picture
Photography by Donna Patterson
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard, don’t give up. If you get knocked down, get back up and try again. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Agriculture because that is where my passion lies and what I want to do for my career. My Ag teachers in high school have left an imprint on me and I want to be an Ag teacher to inspire the next generation as my Ag teachers have inspired me.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

Graduating College and start teaching.
What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?

Allie Harris – Tennessee
Nomination by Melody Harris
Photography by Shots by Sonja Sonja Wiseman
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Allie Harris is an incredible role model to her peers. She volunteers her time working as a peer tutor to children with disabilities and serves as an advocate for the Rebel Against Bullying campaign with Rebel Athletics. Both teachers and students alike talk about her kind hearted and inclusive nature. She’s a model, actress and an honors student. She’s captain of her school cheer squad, runs track and competes in All Star cheer. She was nominated by a teacher to attend the Jr National Young Leaders Conference in Washington DC this summer and plans a career in the engineering field.

What do you love about being a role model and what do you hope to instill among your peers?

I love seeing a change in people because of my influence even if its just a small one. I hope that I can encourage others to treat each other better and to be more inclusive. I hope I can help people see that it's ok to be different and to go against the norm.

Tell us about your time working as a peer tutor to children with disabilities.
How did you get started and what do you do there? I applied to be a peer tutor my 6th grade year. You have to have teacher recommendations and be approved before being selected. I work on anything the kids might need help with from help with from school work to helping with social skills. One main focus is to get the kids out into the school building so they interact with others and are included.

What do you do with them specifically?
My favorite part is helping these kids run the "Snack Wagon". On the surface, it looks like the kids are just selling snacks to teachers but it is really about so much more. The kids are involved in all parts of this little business from ordering, keeping up with inventory, social interaction, counting back correct change, and helping make deposits. The kids get so excited for this part of the day because they get out of the classroom and see everyone all over the school. I've seen kids go from barely talking to anyone to being so excited to be the first person to ask a teacher if they'd like to buy something and being so proud they know what products they have and how to count back change. I can see them building skills they will take with them long after they leave middle school.

What do you love most about working with them?
I love working to make them feel included. This group is often in their own classroom so I'm happy to have any opportunity to show them they are a very important part of our school. I'm very humbled by what I've learned about each of these kids this year. Honestly, they've taught me as much as I have taught them this year! These kids have no idea how much they've changed my life.

Picture

How did you find Shots by Sonja Wiseman & why did you choose her as your photographer? What did you love most about your photo shoot with her?

I booked my first session with Sonja because several people from my cheer gym recommended her. I started taking camera movement classes and acting classes through her as well. She's always made me feel comfortable and pushed me to do my best. She's one of the most creative photographers I've used, and she puts her heart into every picture she takes. She quickly became a great friend in addition to being a great photographer. I'm only 13 but I've already told her she has to shoot my wedding someday because there is nobody else like her.

What has your modeling experience been like?

I've had the absolute best time posing for the camera. I've had the opportunity to do photo shoots in Dallas, TX, Park City, UT, Sevierville, TN and everywhere in between this year. The memories made are incredible. I’ve seen my face pop up online and in brochures. I have been so blessed to get to work with some of the best photographers around. I'm participating in my first pageant later this year where I'll try and win the title of Miss Cheerleader USA

What has been your favorite photo shoot or modeling experience so far?
My first photo shoot as a Rebel Model was one I'll never forget. I went Dallas to the Rebel Headquarters to shoot new release products. I met some of the best people on this shoot that I'm happy to call friends today. It was so fun seeing everything behind the scenes and also getting a sneak peek at the new product line.

Tell us about your acting life. What type of actress are you and what has been your favorite role?
My favorite role so far was a waterpark commercial. I spent 2 full days playing at the waterpark with my best friend! My biggest roles so far have been commercials but I've been invited to audition for some great roles in TV shows and movies. Some I had to pass on because of other commitments and others I just didn't get selected. The first rule my agent taught me is that if you're going to be successful then you have to learn to take rejection well. I've come so close on a few parts and was even selected for one to end up having my role removed from the shoot before production. They paid me anyway but I was still heartbroken lol. I'll keep trying and sooner or later I'll get the big part!

Picture
Photography by Shots by Sonja Sonja Wiseman

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started school Rec cheer at 6 years old and moved on to Allstar at age 7. I started on a prep level 1 team with Abilene Cheer Force in Texas and was most recently on a Sr 5 team at another gym. I'm on my 3rd year of middle school cheer presently. I'm also currently taking coed stunting privates with a college cheerleader. I've been fortunate enough to participate in some of the biggest cheer competitions in the nation and even won a few! I'm hoping now that I'm older I'll find my way to a gym where I'll gain the skills to be on a World's Teams someday.

What has been a favorite memory from cheer?
I've won a lot of metals, jackets and a highly coveted Cheersport Nationals Ring but honestly my favorite memory is from my last competition with Abilene Cheer Force. I was moving out of state so I thought I wouldn't see most of these people again. We didn't win that day but I left there knowing what friendship. teamwork and great coaching was all about. The love I was shown that day is something I'll never forget. Sometimes its about so much more than cheer!

How long have you ran track, what do you run and what has been a favorite accomplishment from track?
I ran track for a couple of year. I was pretty decent at it and was able to land a spot at the Elite Meet. Unfortunately, my cheer gym wouldn't allow me to miss cheer practice to attend. Looking back, I wish I had gone to that meet because it was so important to me. I plan to be on the track team again this year and am excited to have another opportunity to go to the big meet!

How would you describe your leadership style?
I do my best to lead by example. I encourage people to do their best and try to motivate.

What is a Rebel Model?
Rebel is an athletic and cheer clothing brand. I was chosen to be a part of Rebel Talent so I'm invited to do new product release photo shoots and to attend other fun events.

Why is this role important to you? Rebel makes the most beautiful cheer uniforms and practice wear out there. They also founded a movement called Rebel Against Bullying. The brand stands behind anti-bullying and inclusion. I'm proud to be a part of a company with such a powerful message.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I pride myself in the fact that I like to think outside the box. There is a whole world out there to explore and you are capable of accomplishing anything you set your mind to.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I’d like to encourage peers to be the best version of themselves they could be. I’ve seen so many times where everything is a competition and people forget there is room for everyone to shine. Taking something away from someone else doesn’t get you any farther. We should do a better job at encouraging our peers instead of trying to bring them for what they’ve accomplished.
Picture
Photography by Shots by Sonja Sonja Wiseman

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Learning how to do my full in tumbling has been a challenge! Every time I almost had it something happened and I regressed! Injuries, the gym being shut down due to Covid, mental blocks and everything else stood in my way but I was determined to learn this skill. I can finally throw my full. It's not pretty and still needs a lot of work but at least I've overcome the mental part! The rest will come with lots of practice.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I'd say you have to give 110% to anything you want to accomplish. Study hard, practice often and never give up! Don't ever wait for something to happen for you...make it happen for yourself!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I'll be graduating high school in 5 years hopefully at the top of my class! I'm still trying to figure out what college is my dream school. I plan to go into the engineering field and possibly continue cheering on into college. Right now finding the best academic fit is the most important part of selecting a college for me.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I absolutely love to travel! My favorite place I've visited so far is Paris. I love the history, the architecture, and the food! I found myself wanting to wander the streets where the locals are instead of staying at all the tourist spots.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Well...I am pretty great with a Hula Hoop!

3 Things on your bucket list
Live in Paris for a year
Visit Greece
Land a movie role

Who do you find inspiring?
My favorite principal, Kayla Montgomery. She makes a difference in kids lives in a very unique way. She's been someone I could talk to this year when I had some especially hard things going on in my life.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think people see me as a determined and hard working person.

Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Gabriella Romero has inspired me with her intelligence, drive, and tenacity, but mostly through her compassionate spirit. Gabby has plans to enter the medical field, which is the perfect fit for her, because the empathy she has for others, paired with her brilliance, makes her the perfect candidate to succeed in this arena. Throughout the years I have known her, she has always been a genuine and caring friend. Her words, her writing, and her actions continue to inspire me, and I know that Gabby will leave an impressive mark on all that she chooses to pursue in the future.

What should we definitely know about you?
I believe that my defining trait would be my versatility due to my wide diversity of interests. Educationally, I love experimenting in science and medical classes while also reading a realistic-fiction novel in English to analyze its symbolism. Outside of school, I enjoy listening to and making music, painting, drawing, watching and occasionally playing volleyball, basketball, and football, as well as working as a Pharmacy Technician. With my variety of interests, I’m able to adapt to various situations and genuinely enjoy myself no matter where I am or what I’m doing.

What made you decide to go into the field of medicine?
The biggest factor that inspired me to go into the medical field was my interest in learning the endless wonders of science and the empathy I’ve learned from the novels I’ve read. Through these novels, I’ve witnessed so many different situations containing people of all backgrounds and they’ve shown me to be open-minded towards everyone since I never can truly know what they’ve been through. I have a strong passion for helping others and the combination of being able to do so while learning the most complex subject seemed like the perfect fit for me.

What are you doing now to ensure your success?
Currently, I am working as a Pharmacy Technician, where I am learning to help people get the medication they need. It is giving me a chance to learn an aspect of the medical field that I plan to be a part of.

How did you find and why did you choose Jenny Johnson Photography for your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom worked with her brother in the 90s and they ended up having a lot of mutual friends since her sons go to the same school as me. I was quite nervous about the shoot because I’ve never had professional photos done but I’m so glad I did it with Jenny. I’ve never been so comfortable in front of a camera and she was so kind and funny. It was really easy to talk to her and she made sure that everything was perfect. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect person to shoot my pictures.

What will you miss most about high school?
I will definitely miss seeing my mom, stepdad, sister, and grandparents every day. I’m super close with my family so it’s going to be difficult to not have my best friends with me all the time as I do now. Although I’d never admit this to her, I’m secretly going to miss fighting with my sister about sharing clothes, driving around everywhere blaring music, and singing popcorn karaoke while our parents sleep. Although I’m going to miss my family’s support the most, I know that they are still going to be cheering me on at home while I’m in Austin.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing at college next year?
I am most looking forward to the Freshman Research Initiative Program I’ve just been admitted to at the University of Texas at Austin. I’m so excited to be a first-generation college student and I’m so blessed that UT Austin has so many opportunities. With this program, I will be able to do research in a real lab with professors who are trying to solve real-life problems. I would love to be just a part of a project that succeeds and ends up helping hundreds of people for years to come.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One aspect of my life that my nomination doesn’t cover is my passion for volunteering, specifically through Legacy League. Legacy League is a mom-and-daughter philanthropic organization that has directly shown me the impact I can make on another person. Through Northwest Assistance Ministries’ Meals on Wheels, I’ve had the opportunity to bring meals to those who are homebound. Each door held a different story than the next and yet, each of them showed me the same amount of utmost gratitude. The conversations we had changed my life and I only hope I had the smallest impact on theirs.

What leadership opportunities have you received through this organization?
Volunteering with Legacy League has given me the opportunity to explore my leadership by being a chairman of a large fundraising event, which is a fashion show. I helped to organize the entire day and it was a wonderful and fun event that raised a lot of money for our philanthropies.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I enjoy leading by example. I feel the best way to be a leader is to get involved and show passion in all you do. When others see the pure enjoyment that can be had by helping others then it is sure to become contagious.

Tell us about a favorite art piece.
To this day, my favorite art piece is the SpongeBob SquarePants characters that I secretly painted just above the baseboard in my bedroom behind my bed. I would paint them every night without my parents knowing. They are still there and I’m sure they will stay there long after I move out.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
One passion I could discuss for hours would definitely be the topic of music. I’ve played percussion since I was in the fourth grade and I’ve discovered the complexities of what makes up a song. I admire lyrical rappers while also perfect, soft harmonies. I admire rock bands and symphonies. I admire pop song beats while also dissonant chords with resolutions. I could spend all day dissecting songs whether they were written by a famous composer or a songwriter on the radio. I believe that any type of music is an art and it all deserves to be appreciated and admired.

What is your greatest accomplishment with music?
My greatest accomplishment with music is the lifelong commitment I have had to making and performing music. I have been playing music since I was 5 years old. I began my love of music by playing the guitar. Then the violin and piano. When I was in the 4th grade I was chosen to be a part of the percussion section at my elementary school. Then began my love for all percussion instruments. It's been a total of 13 playing various instruments. Music will forever be a part of my life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover my journey in life, I had to grow up at a very young age and I had to raise myself and my younger brother. I’m doing much better for myself and my brother we are now recently adopted and living our best lives.

What do you love doing with your brother that you hope he never forgets?
My brother and I are kids that love being outside we spend lots of time out there just hanging out, something I hope he never forgets is the quality time we spend together.

What new traditions are you establishing with your new family?
Other than establishing a routine we are starting a lot of new traditions, late night food runs, all the holiday fiascos and everything in between!! My favorite new tradition would have to be our weekly game nights every week we all sit down and play board games, not only is it competitive but it is so so fun!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I could present a topic right now I would choose the agricultural world, this category is so fascinating and complex, without agriculture we would have absolutely nothing in this world. It’s a truly beautiful thing.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve accomplished is standing up to the person that hurt me most, I’m the most non-confrontational person you’ll ever met so this was a huge step for me!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My best advice would honestly be to live your life one day at a time, don’t always have a plan for every little thing, let life take you on its own journey!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself with a full time nursing career, finished with college, hopefully engaged and living on my own!

Tell us about the places you've lived.
So far I've lived in six different places: Georgia, Germany, Mississippi, Colorado, Alabama, and Virginia. The longest place we lived in was Colorado at five years! The shortest has been Alabama and Virginia at two years, but I count Virginia as the shortest because the COVID lockdown took over an entire year.

What is the hardest part about switching schools?
The hardest part about switching schools has been leaving my friends behind. I still like to keep in contact with them, I just don't get to see them face-to-face. Since I usually move toward the beginning of summer, I also have to go that whole summer staying at home.

What is the best part?
The best part is making new friends. I have friends all over the world!

What will you miss most about this time in your life?
Honestly, I will really miss moving because I've gotten to where, after a few years, I'm ready to move again.

Why did you choose Julia Kate Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Julia is one of my best friends and an aspiring young photographer. During our photoshoots we always have a good playlist going and she's always checking to make sure I'm comfortable. The vibes are never off in Julia's shoots.

Tell us about your artwork. We'd love to see a favorite piece!
I took my first real art classes as electives in my freshman and sophomore years of high school (I'm currently a sophomore). I am a perfectionist so it's hard for me to back away from an artwork, but once I do, I am always amazed.

What are your favorite things to create art with and why?
My favorite thing to create art with has always been paint. I love sketching it out and then watching the colors flow on the canvas. I am currently trying to figure out how to make textured paintings.

What are some of your favorite things to do with your friends?
One of my favorite things to do with my friends is go roller skating. We all love to meet up at the Cavalier and hang out for a few hours. Most times we take a little break and grab some snacks at the concessions they have there.

How do you like to spend time with your siblings?
My siblings and I really enjoy boardgames and our family loves to collect them. We have an entire closet designated just for them! We often have family game nights that consist of pizza and a good bit of our collection.

What is your favorite family memory?
Over last fall break, my family and I went to New York City and saw the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! It was so cool and worth every minute. We stayed in New York for four days and went around the city going to all kinds of different places.

What is a family tradition you have that you hope never ends?
One of our family traditions is going to get ice cream the Friday at the end of our first week back at school. It's just a little treat to set everyone off to a good start.

Which was your favorite Harry Potter movie and why?

This is a hard question, but I think if I had to pick, I would choose The Goblet of Fire. I really just love the feel that I get from the movies and the whole idea of magic is just so fun.

What is the coolest thing you've learned about space?
The coolest thing I've learned about space is that it's infinite. Now I know everyone knows this, but when you think about it, it's insane! There are so many other solar systems and galaxies out there. The possibilities are endless!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The quicker you learn to love yourself, the better off you'll be.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I'm a bookworm but I can only read when I'm not exhausted. Therefore, I usually end up reading more during the summer.

Nomination & Photography by Stewart Smith Photography

What should we know about you?
What I feel Inspiring Teens Magazine should know about me is my passion for the Arts. Specifically, Interior as well as clothing design. I find that I am most confident when I can express my mood through my attire and/or through the decor of my room. Where there are other areas that I may doubt myself or question my first instincts, this is not the case when it comes to fashion. This is where I shine, and hesitation is unheard of. My voice is heard through my style daily.

Tell us more about your love of clothing design.
I am not designing my own clothes right now but show my love of design by the way I dress and decorate my bedroom. I love to go shopping and I tend to pick clothes that other teens my age might not typically wear. The photos I picked to send show my style. I became interested in clothing styles design at a young age due to my mother dressing me and encouraging me to dress my best and wear what makes me feel good as an individual.

How would you define your style?
I feel my style depends on my mood and the weather. Where I am going will also reflect what I may choose to wear. When I decorate, I tend to try and reflect the style of the house with modern day flair.

Where are your favorite places to shop?
I love Urban Outfitters because their style is usually unique and different. I usually tend to not like many stores but search for pieces that stick out to me and allow me to create an outfit I will love.

Who are your favorite designers vs/and whose images of fashion do you enjoy pouring over most?
I tend to like clothes from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s but do not have a certain designer that I like. I’m still trying to discover who I may like. I do however love interior design and love the way Joanna Gaines designs her homes. Her style is unique in a way that reflects the people she is designed for and I hope I can do the same as I get older.

If you could shadow any successful designer, what would you most hope to learn from them?
It would definitely be Joanna Gaines! I feel I could learn so much from her and I love the way she uses old items and brings them back to life.

If someone was shadowing you as a designer, what could you teach them?
I would teach them to listen to their clients’ ideas and then incorporate these ideas into their designs. Listening and not being afraid to be different is key.

What do you love most about the way you have decorated your room? How would you describe the aesthetic?
My room is a true reflection of me. You can see by the colors I chose and the items I used are all related to things I like in the fashion world.

Picture

Why did you choose Stewart Smith Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom had a few friends that had used Stewart and loved what she saw. This was an experience I will never forget because he taught me how to relax and be myself behind the camera. He also helped build up my self-esteem when I saw the finished photos. I loved how true he was to me and how natural my pictures came out. They were all make-up free besides a little mascara.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Inspiring things that my nomination does not cover about me is my desire to explore the world. Every country has its own beauty, fashion, history, and style. I find it fascinating how each country can have such a unique culture that makes up its appearance. Also, because fashion is such an inspiration of mine, I want to explore as many styles as I can. I can't imagine a more thrilling experience than being about to do this by exploring the world and seeing/learning about it firsthand.

Where has been your favorite place to travel so far and why?
I love to travel to Florida because I love warm weather and Disney. I truly do not think I have traveled to my favorite place yet, but I believe it is in my future when me and my mother travel to Italy in a few years as my graduation gift. I have always dreamed of going to Italy and it's going to become a reality soon!!

Where are you planning to travel to next and what are you most excited to experience there?
We are planning a trip to Aruba next year and I’m so excited to go because it's a place my mother and grandmother have gone and talked about for years and can finally experience it with them both.

Where would you like to travel to if you could go anywhere in the world and why?
Beside Italy, Africa may be next on my list to experience their culture and all the animals. But to be honest my dream is to travel the world and experience all that I can.

Picture

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I have always believed that being a beautiful person begins on the inside. I feel that in today's world social media has impacted many teens in such a negative way that it causes teens to lack the confidence they need to love themselves. We need to work together and change this!

What do you feel is the hardest part of about interacting through social media?
I feel you don’t always get a true representation of people.

How could social media be a positive impact for teens rather than negative?
I think social media can impact teens in a positive way by showing teens that people can succeed if they work hard and put their mind to it. It can also teach many positive lessons in life to teens that might not have it so good at home.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell others to work hard and not care what others think of you. You know your truth.

Picture

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I will still be in college studying interior design.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to kickbox and have family and friends over to use our pool.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I love to bake!

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel
Model
Jump from a plane

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom because she has always had my back and has taught me to be the best person I can be.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I truly think my kindness to others inspires others to be kind. I also believe I am somewhat of a trend setter with my clothing choices.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like you to know that I truly believe you can do anything you put your mind to as long as you go into being honest, kind and true to yourself and others.

Elayna Melching

Picture

Elayna Melching - Missouri
Nomination & Photography by Rita Jana Photography
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Elayna was awarded the school’s Virtue of Kindness Award twice by her peers. Then, her dance studio presented her their Kindness Award two years in a row. This was the first time any student won two consecutive years. Elayna dances 4-5 days a week and continues to maintain a strong academic record, make food for the poor, and clean her church for the holidays. It’s no surprise that Elayna is described by her teachers as “supportive of her friends and teammates.” It was an honor to photograph Elayna and submit her for Inspiring Teens Magazine.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed on my passion and love for dance. While dance is my main sport, I have also played soccer, basketball, swimming, and participated in Girls on the Run. Through dance and sports, I have learned (or gained) confidence, leadership, and what it means to be a teammate. Managing my time and energy are also skills that dance has taught me. I am coachable and have learned how to embrace feedback. With feedback comes growth. These are all important attributes to carry with me in life.

Let’s start with dance.
I started dancing when I was 5 years old in kindergarten. I decided to start dancing since a friend, who also was named Elayna, started dancing for Renee Johnsons. I always did the same thing as her, so I joined the studio except I did regular classes, and she did the competition team. Eventually I quit gymnastics and started playing basketball and soccer along with dance. Then in 2nd grade, I joined the performance team because I wanted to get more serious with dance. The following year I joined the competition dance team and that is where I am today.

How did you find and why did you choose Rita Jana Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Rita Ann asked my mother if I was willing to model a little bit one day, so I accepted. I had never met her before since my mom and Rita Ann knew each other through my brother's school. My experience was amazing! I did my hair and makeup and then went to an art wall. The art wall was beautiful! To take the photo, she had to go in the street and stop the cars and it was very funny. I loved the most that I got to come up with poses and do things I was comfortable with.

What do you love about dance and where do you find your drive even on hard days?
The thing I love most about dance is the community and diversity I have with what I do. Every day there is something new to learn, perform, or make up. Dance is my stress reliever, a place that I feel comfortable doing and being at. I find my drive by knowing the outcome by feeling an accomplishment after a long day of dance. I also know that people depend on me and so even on hard days I know why I need to go.

What are your favorite dances to study, and what was your most memorable dance?
My favorite type of dance is either contemporary or jazz. I love contemporary because it has quirky moves and many dynamics in it. I do really love jazz though too. Sassy or funky jazz is probably the most fun to perform because of how high the energy is. My most memorable dance is You Got the Look. It was a quirky jazz dance to a song no one could forget. It was like a ray of sunshine hit everyone when they heard the song. I loved it!

What was your favorite dance competition and why?
My favorite dance competition would probably be my most recent competition. Our whole studio had the dressing room to ourselves, and we had breaks to hang out. Nothing was too crammed together, and everyone was proud of what we accomplished. Also, it had a concession stand which I know shouldn't be a reason, but it sold Dip'n Dots! It lasted from Friday to Sunday, and everyone had a great time!

What is the hardest part about dance, and what is the easiest?
The hardest part about dance isn't actually the dancing itself but it is the commitment. Hours and hours are spent competing, practicing, and memorizing while others are having sleepovers or parties. Friends don't understand why I can't skip dance because they don't dance! The easiest thing about dance is I always have a good time and a group of people supporting me. including teachers!

What is a favorite accomplishment in one of your sports?
My favorite accomplishment in soccer is scoring the last goal on my CYC team ever! That one goal really meant a lot and ended my sports season with a bang! It was the first goal I scored that season since I missed a lot of games. I also never said I was good at soccer because I always did it just for the fun of it. I will never play any sports with the people I have known since I was 3 and that accomplishment will always be stuck in my head forever.

How did you get involved in Girls on the Run and what was a favorite memory?
I actually don't remember how I got involved on Girls on the Run. I think my mom just signed me up one day because the school needed people to do it and it was a good learning experience. My favorite memory are the chats we had while running and after running playing on the playground. We never were allowed on the playground, so I remember we were thrilled to be "breaking the rules." The snacks we got before running were delicious even though they were healthy!

Tell us about the Virtue of Kindness Award and what it means to you.
The Virtue of Kindness Award meant a lot to me. The teachers I believe would seek for children who demonstrated kindness the most and it meant a lot that I was chosen a few times. The whole school would wait for the day in church to see who was chosen and to be chosen felt like you won the lottery. I always tried to be helpful, and kid and I loved that it paid off in the end. Even when I did not receive the award, knew kindness shouldn't have an award since everyone should already be doing it.

Share with us your experiences making food for the poor. When and how did you get started with this service and what kinds of food do you make?
I helped my mom out by making homemade macaroni and cheese for a soup kitchen back in summer. I got started because my mom was busy and needed help, so I offered to help since I know the recipe. I am not the best cook, but macaroni is easy because it is just cheese, seasoning, noodles, and milk. Doing things for the poor makes me feel good inside that I have helped someone in need.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One of my core values are relationships. While I am a sweet, generous and kind person, I am confident and not afraid to speak up when things seem unjust. I care deeply about the way people are treated and want everyone to get a fair chance. I have stood up to bully's that were being unkind to a classmate. I have declined hearing a secret in which I was told to keep from other friends. I am a loyal friend who will not compromise my values to "go along with the crowd".

What do you and your friends like to do in your down time?
We like to hang out and talk about anything teenage girls would talk about. My friends and I get together and make Tik Toks and watch movies. We like to go outside on walks or play childhood games such as Mario cart and hide and seek. At school we play BuzzFeed quizzes and gartic phone which are online games. On our down time at home, we text and snapchat each other to stay in touch!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would talk about my Catholic school's dress codes and how it needs to be changed. Girls have no clothes in the summertime that is "appropriate" on dress down days. Stores make it hard for girls to find clothes that fit into the rules. I feel passionate about this topic because the boys' dress code lets them wear normal clothes while us girls struggle, and clothing stores and designers don't market to modesty.

What would your ideal summer outfit be for this situation and how would you get it passed for all catholic girls?

My ideal summer outfit is shorts or jean shorts with a tank top. Though at school, I would have to risk wearing shorts that could give me a yellow slip since I don't have any long shorts and a t-shirt. The principal would never change the rules because it has been brought up several times but if I could, I would talk to him and explain our situation. Stating tank tops should be allowed as long as not too much chest was shown and shorts were allowed to be worn.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say no one can define who you are besides yourself and to never give up.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I will be finishing my first year at college hopefully either in a engineering or business degree. I also hope I still have some of my friends right now.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to Italy
Have a job that I will love
Live for a month on a yacht

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like to tell you I am grateful for this opportunity and am glad to have answered these questions for you!

Tell us about your dance career. How did you get started and where are you at with it now?
I started dancing when I was just 4 years old. My first class that I took was pre-ballet. I have been dancing for 8 years now, and I am taking several classes along with being on my studio's dance team.

What styles of dance do you study, and which one/s do you prefer?
I study ballet, lyrical, jazz, hip/hop, pom, and contemporary. My favorite style is lyrical. I like the flowy movement and the emotion I can represent with this style of dance.

What dance competition is most memorable to you?
My most memorable competition is the Showcase State Competition my team just competed in this year. We placed 4th in our category and received an up-and-coming stars award! We were very excited!

What is your greatest achievement in dance so far?
My greatest achievement is making the dance team, and I recently achieved my Aerial! I have been working at it in my free time, and I am excited I finally have it!

What are you working on now - or aiming towards with dance?
I am currently working to be on pointe for ballet. I am almost there!! I am also continuing to perfect my leaps and turns.

What about dancing do non dancers not realize?
Dancing is a true sport! It requires a lot of dedication, skill, and strength! You have to work really hard and push yourself. I wish others could see how hard the other dancers work at my studio!

What made you want to be a part of 12.9 Dance Team and what do you love most about it?

I wanted to be a part of 12.9 dance, because Maria has given her ambassadors a chance to grow, build confidence, and to learn from other dancers. She brings different dance teams and studios together and gives us a chance to get to know one another.

What was your favorite photo shoot with Maria from 12.9 Dance?
My favorite photo shoot is the first shoot I had with her as an ambassador! She picked the best location, and it gave me a chance to get creative. I also met a really sweet friend that day, and it has been fun getting to know her and run into her at dance competitions.

When did you start cheering and what do you love most about it?
I first started cheering in the 3rd grade. I started cheering for my school's pee wee football team and later joined a competitive cheer team. I am currently cheering for my middle school for football and basketball. I love cheering, because I enjoy representing my school and showing school spirit.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
My favorite memory is cheering together this past October in support of breast cancer awareness month. The team came together wearing pink ribbons and pink socks in support! Some of the football players joined in as well!

What is your work ethic like to be able to handle all your activities and still get such a high GPA on top of it all?
I am driven and strive to excel in all aspects of my life. After school, I come home to finish my homework and study if I need to before my extracurricular activities. I also try to get as much done as possible while at school. I have great support at home as well, in helping me achieve my goals.

Tell us more about your faith and it's importance to you.
My family and I attend Restoration Park Church near where I live. I accepted Jesus as my Savior when I was 8 years old, and I was baptized a few months later. My dad was able to baptize me and that is something I will never forget! It is important to me to share the love of Jesus and to be kind to others.

What is your family like and what is a favorite tradition with your family that you hope never ends?

My family is very loving, supportive, and jokative. My favorite tradition that we have is coming together every year for the holidays. I also go to lunch with my parents, sisters, grandparents, and aunts after church almost every week. It's nice coming together so often!

What do you and your friends do in your down time?
In our free time we enjoy sleep overs, movies, and hanging together at school functions.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
As a friend, I have comforted those who are bullied or mistreated and have stood beside them. I want others to be treated with respect and with kindness. I want to treat them as I want to be treated.

Among cheerleading, dance, and being a straight A student, I am also a student aid for my 4th grade teacher. I had him as a teacher a few years ago, and it’s a pleasure to help him and his current students.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to my peers, it would be about treating others with kindness. Being in middle school, I witness first hand how words can affect others. I would want to talk about building one another up and using the proper words and actions to reflect that.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Completing my Aerial has been one of my toughest challenges. I let the fear of getting hurt get in the way some times, but pushed through that to be able to accomplish it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to work hard, stay focused, believe in yourself, and never give up on what you want to accomplish.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself getting ready to graduate high school and heading off to college. Right now, I would like to be an Art teacher, and if not dancing myself, then teach dance or open my own studio.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I enjoy being creative. One of my favorite classes at school is Art, and in my spare time I enjoy drawing and love to color.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I'm very flexible and it has surprised my classmates and gym teacher in the past.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. I would love to visit Hawaii.
2. Own my own horse one day.
3. Own my own business.

Who do you find inspiring?
My grandfather. He was in the Vietnam war and fought for our country.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

Nomination & Photography by Melanie Runsick Photography
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Olivia is kind, determined, outgoing and gorgeous. She runs track and has the most AMAZING arms EVER!

Photography by Melanie Runsick Photography
Tell us about your track career, why did you join, what are your best events, and what do you run?
I have done track since I was in the 7th grade. I joined because my older brother had done it and loved it. I've looked up to him my whole life so I figured I’d give this a shot too. I run in the open 200 meter dash, the 100 meter dash, the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x200 meter relay. I love all of these races but my best and favorite races are the 200 meter dash and the 4x100 meter relay. This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made and I will cherish the memories I made with this team forever.

What is a big accomplishment for you in track?
I have two big ones that personally mean a lot to me. One happened recently, I was asked to teach some younger track kids how to do hand-offs for their relay. This means a lot to me because it shows that my coach believes in me and my abilities well enough to give me this responsibility. The other one is that I and my previous relay team hold the school record for the 4x100 meter relay. I was fairly young in comparison to my teammates and I wanted to do them well and when we won I never felt prouder of myself and this team. They truly are great girls and that is a memory I will never forget.

How did you meet Melanie and why did you choose her for senior pictures? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I met Melanie through my family, she had done my brother’s pictures the previous year. I wanted her to do mine too because my brother’s looked so professional and my mom had raved about how amazing and sweet she was. My experience was amazing. I have done two sessions with her and she truly makes you feel like family when she works with you. I love how she makes the whole situation less stressful and awkward than it could be.

Picture
Photography by Melanie Runsick Photography
What else should we know about you?
I am a part of a few organizations in my community that are for the bettering of it. I would love to talk about any one of them! I work with children at my church and help teach them on Sundays. I have also been on a mission trip with my youth group at church that was based on helping the homeless in a community in Nashville, Tennessee. I love helping people and doing what I can to make hard days better for everyone else. I have been a part of my school's track team since 7th grade, and I have loved every bit of it. I love doing what I can to encourage my peers in my sport as well.

What got you involved in your organizations?
I have been in Crown Club and a part of my church’s organizations for many years. I got into Crown Club through a sign up from my school

What have you learned about yourself in the process?
I have learned that I am a very empathetic person.

What were your leadership roles?

I have had certain instances where I had to be the leader of an area or a group of people during a Crown Club event. It was a great experience and I always have a great time working with my fellow members.

What do you love most about working with children at your church?

I love being able to make sure that these kids have happy memories in church. When growing up you remember and associate memories with places and I would never want the daycare or the church to be the holder of bad memories for a child. Church is a safe place and always should be.

What do you do with the children?

When I am working in the daycare building, I watch and take care of the children while their parents are in church services. If I have older kids I help teach them lessons as well. When I am helping with our church’s Vacation Bible School, I have helped lead a group of children as well as helped get food ready for the entirety of our program.

What made you get involved with the mission trip and what surprised you most about it?

I got involved through a family friend that encouraged me to go. I went to get out of town and maybe do some good, what happened on that trip I will never forget. I never would have imagined that I would have had that much of an impact.

What impact did you and your team make?

My team and I fed a group of over 100 homeless people under the Nashville bridge. We also sat with them while they sang and had a worship service. We also set up for the event beforehand, helping the normal crew of people who do it. I would like to think that we really had an impact on these people’s lives. Even though I may never see them again, I will always remember the smile on their faces.

Picture
Photography by Melanie Runsick Photography
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love helping people and doing what I can to make a part of their day better. I do as much as I can for my friends when they need it. If there is something that I can do to better a situation for me or someone else, I will do my best to do it. I just want to do my part in making everyone a little happier than they used to be.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?

I believe that it is important to do what we can to improve our community and the lives of the people in our community, even when it is not convenient for ourselves. This doesn't even necessarily mean having to organize a huge event, it could be as simple as bringing dinner to a friend in need, or just being kind to a stranger. You never know what is going on in someone's life, your act of kindness could mean more than you know.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

I would say that learning to be kind to people who aren’t in return was the most difficult thing I have accomplished. I figured out that maybe if I am nice in return, they might change their ways.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Make connections with people and talk to everyone. You can achieve so much by just being a good person to people.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

I see myself finishing school and starting my own life. I would love to be a medical Sonographer in the future.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?

I love watching movies!

Who do you find inspiring?

My whole family. They have all been through things no one should go through and they are all still incredible, strong, faithful people.

SaraJane Carty - North Carolina
Nomination & Photography by Jamie Loomis Photography
Issue 54 of  Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: SaraJane Carty faces many challenges to success, including multiple health issues causing chronic pain, severe anxiety and ADHD, which provided bullies an easy target. To improve her health, SaraJane works out regularly. This allows her to help her disabled father and elderly neighbor with physical tasks.
Years of volunteer work includes school-based organizations (French Club and B.A.A.R.K Club) and faith-based, where she leads a Bible study for girls.
SaraJane is a freshman at SCC, participating in C-Step and on the President’s List with a 4.0. She’s studying psychology to learn more about mental health disorders.
Photography by Jamie Loomis Photography
Question 1: SaraJane, I understand that you have a remarkable story to share. Let’s start off by talking about what challenges you.

In my life, I’ve had to push through chronic pain, anxiety, issues at home, and bullying. Yet none of these have limited my ability to set goals and reach for my future. I have demonstrated time and again what is most important: to take care of family and help others out along the way, to be clever enough to adapt to changing situations and to make healthy lifestyle choices. These qualities will benefit me throughout my life.

Question 2: What kinds of issues did you have at home?

At 15, I was responsible for cooking and cleaning. My mom had to work in another state and could only come home one weekend each month. I would go to school, then come home to care for my disabled father. Despite his own challenges, he still likes to work around the house, which actually causes more pain. Then I would cross the street and care for my neighbor, Papa, who has lung cancer. At Papa’s, I would feed and walk his dogs, and help with yard work. I not only helped them with everyday tasks, I also provided emotional support.

Question 3: You mentioned bullying. Please share more about that.

I spent evenings caring for others, so homework started right before bedtime, meaning I didn’t have help when I had questions. This caused my grades to slip. In addition, my anxiety made it difficult to ask questions in class. Honors classes require a lot of attention, and because of my situation, I wasn’t able to do my best. That’s when classmates began to ridicule me. I didn’t share what my home life was like because it only seemed natural to step up. I remember feeling guilty when the teacher would ask for my work and I had nothing to present.

Question 4: How did most teachers respond when you began to fall behind?

I tried to explain that I needed help but always got the same answer, “try a bit harder” or “ask classmates for help.” I wrote details for each assignment but it wasn’t enough. I was in a bottomless pit. Despite everything, I usually pulled through on final exams. I’ll never forget one time while walking to Weightlifting class, my English teacher stopped me in the hallway to congratulate me on getting one of the highest scores in his class! It was so uplifting to hear that praise from my teacher after feeling like a failure all semester.

Question 5: That’s tough. How did you turn it around?

I’ve developed a system to organize my work, splitting large assignments into smaller daily tasks. I became an honor roll student and confident in my ability to complete assignments in a timely manner.

Through therapy, I’ve developed skills to soothe my anxiety. I found true friends who know my story and encourage me. Their support gives me the confidence to ask questions in class until I understand the material. By organizing my work into smaller tasks, I can meet the deadlines. I’ve shared my process with others who are now also doing better at completing work on time.

Question 6: With all of this stress, how do you find balance?

I’m passionate about living my healthiest life. I keep myself in emotional balance by regularly doing yoga and making healthy food choices. In the morning and at night, yoga calms my mind and frees my body from some of my pain.

I also feel better when I do things for others. I look for opportunities to lift others up. While in school, I did volunteer work, including being a school ambassador and participating in BAARK, a club that supported the local Humane Society. Currently, I’m leading a Bible study and working at the food bank.

Question 7: SaraJane, what inspires you to participate in community service events, despite your health issues?

I’m inspired by the lead character from the movie, Evan Almighty. Who, when asked how to change the world, said, “One act of random kindness at a time.” This movie spoke to me. Evan faces ridicule when God asks him to build an ark. Despite his protests, he uses the ark to save his family, friends and neighbors from a flash flood. He learns that being kind isn’t always glamorous but it can mean everything to someone else. Kindness is given through actions, whether that be a warm smile to a sad stranger or a small gift.

Question 8: That is a great movie but teenage years can be challenging. Do you have an example of a time that you were able to perform an act of random kindness?

In History class, I noticed a girl crying. Some classmates tried to console her and others ignored her. I had a chocolate bar with me that day and even though I didn’t know her well, I asked if she would like it. “I know you don’t know me but I just wanted to tell you that everything will be okay.” Immediately, her scowl vanished and was replaced with a look of astonishment. Someone who didn’t really know her reached out. She thanked me and seemed a little more relaxed. It’s a moment that reminds me to stay kind to everyone.

Question 9: You openly discuss your diagnosis of severe anxiety. How does that factor in with your acts of random kindness?

My own battles with anxiety cause me to offer my help to others who are feeling overwhelmed. I offer a judgment free zone where my friends can safely express their emotions, problems, whatever they need to get off their chest. I never pry. I just offer a safe space and a listening ear. They know they can trust me; I never repeat what they share.

Question 10: Does your anxiety ever interfere with your ability to help others while in large groups of people?

Sometimes. I usually try to help behind the scenes. However, my desire to be a team player sometimes overcomes my anxiety.

That’s what happened when I portrayed Marie Antoinette for the Homecoming Parade. Although it’s a dream come true for an extrovert, being the center of attention is more of a nightmare to me. Yet, that’s exactly what I did. There I was, in a long green formal period costume with a tiara on top of my curls. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and mustered the courage to smile, wave, and toss candy to the crowds.

Question 11: Have there been other times you’ve been able to step outside of your comfort zone?

The parade wasn’t the only time I left my comfort zone. With encouragement, I joined the Girls’ Weightlifting class. No one, including myself, thought I’d be able to lift much weight with my tiny frame. It was challenging. Yet, I’d consistently strive to exceed my stats from the day before. In the end, I was shocked at how much I could lift! Joining that class was one of the best choices I ever made. I proved to myself that I could do anything I set my mind to and I am so proud of myself for it.

Question 12: How did weightlifting affect other aspects of your life?

Armed with the confidence gained from weightlifting, I opened my mind to trying new experiences. This willingness to interact more with my teachers and classmates led to an opportunity to participate in LatinX, a festival celebrating Hispanic culture at the community college. I greeted visitors from the community as they came to learn more about what the community college has to offer. After my shift, I was able to talk more with my wonderful Sociology professor, listen to music, enjoy the sunshine and eat some delicious foods. It was an experience that I’ll always treasure.

Question 13: Do you have a hidden talent?

I do have a hidden talent! Papa taught me how to throw knives at trees. Sometimes after helping him in the yard, we’d stay outside and practice throwing knives. Eventually, my parents bought me my own set of throwing knives and a target. It’s up hanging on the fence in my backyard.

Question 14: What do you hope to gain by sharing your incredible story?

I know that the skills I’ve learned throughout my journey can positively impact the lives of others. That’s why I hope my story will encourage others to keep pushing through their own troubles. The world has a way of humbling us. The important thing is to keep getting back up. There is hope for everyone to accomplish their goals. However, one thing I've learned is that life can change in an instant. Who knows what opportunities will present themselves? We all have gifts to share with the world, we just need a chance.

Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

What is your active schedule like?
I go to two schools every day. I attend Knoch High School and Butler County Area Vocational Technical School; KHS is my regular core classes that I need to graduate and BCAVTS is a technical trade school and I’m enrolled in the Sports Medicine Program. After school, I work with my high school’s Athletic Trainers to improve my skills for my future career, I teach dance and baton twirling two nights a week to young students (who are constantly amazing me every week with their improvement), I take my own dance and twirling classes twice a week, and I work on my weekends that I have free from my competitions.

How do you feel about constantly having an active schedule?
The active schedule has given me many opportunities through the community such as Junior Miss Saxonburg, Captain of Majorettes, KHS Feature Twirler, Butler County Health Care Worker Student of the Year, and more. It always keeps me busy and active more than the average student that just goes to the gym. The cons to my active schedule is not having much time to sleep or hang out with my friends. Thankfully my friends are understanding with my goals in my life they work in a schedule and plan to be together.

How are you a role model to young students at your studio?
In 2018, my coach advanced me to the highest competitive level for our team, Senior Twirl Legacy Team. Miss Natalie, my coach, has always talked about the senior team. My first competition as a Senior TLT member was one to remember because we were right after the youngest twirling class at the studio. We entered the floor, and I noticed the group of girls sitting on the floor watching us. After that moment I realized that I wanted to be a role model to the younger students. I started to get more involved with the students after those years by talking to them because I was seen as their idol. over the summer, I helped a young student master some of her challenging tricks.

What have you learned about yourself in this experience?
After 15 years of dancing and twirling, I now understand the struggles my coaches had with me when I was growing up. They used their experiences to help shape my life, and that is what I’m doing with the children.

How did you find Laura Welsh Photography, LLC and why did you know she'd be the best fit for your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I go to school with her daughter, but I never made the connection until I started working with Laura. I met Laura my Junior Year when she took KHS Majorette pictures. I went to her Instagram and realized some of the girls I twirled and danced with used her as their senior photographer. At first, I was nervous because I only knew one girl from our model team. Once I started working more and more with her, I got comfortable taking pictures and being my normal self. I mostly love her ideas/themes she has with her photoshoots. She is so creative and having a group of teens with different ideas help her a lot too.

What impact do you have on young children?
Most young children just see me as the big kid that does everything. Being in parades twirling or riding in a convertible, teaching how to dance and twirl, performing dances and twirling on the football field or stage all leave them with their jaws to the floor. They see me as a famous person that can do cool things.

What do you love most about being around them?
I love their different personalities and watching them grow up. Each week I see them, sometimes more than once, they evolve into better children. I share stories about my day with them and give them advice for whatever they need help with no matter what age.

What activities do you enjoy with them?
I enjoy hearing about their days at school then if we have extra time during class I love playing games of “mimic the animal” or an obstacle course.
Picture
Photography by L. Welsh Photography, LLC
What would you say your strongest leadership skill is?
Being a leader is hard, but my strongest skill is being a communicator between our coaches and the team. It’s a struggle for the new girls on the team to feel comfortable talking to our coaches, so I help them with the transition into the team to eventually get to a higher position one day.

How did you get to be captain and what do your duties entail?
I auditioned my junior year of high school for the captain leadership position. I went through a small routine and taught it to the other girls auditioning for squad, an interview, and a letter to the judges panel of why I believe I’m the best candidate for the position. After band camp started to end, my coach held me back after practice to ask me if I wanted to be captain of my competitive team. She saw my skills when I worked with the squad and felt since I was in the National winning team that I would be able to lead the girls into another national title.

Tell us about your athletic career with fire twirling. What is your practice schedule like? Do you perform and compete?
I’ve twirled one baton on fire at one performance from 2016 to present day. When I was given the opportunity of being KHS’s Feature Twirler I had to jump straight into 2 and 3 batons on fire. I had to come up with 2 routines for fire twirling in two weeks. I created and practiced for 7 hours every weekday for those two weeks. On top of that I had to create two normal baton twirling routines for the football field. I had a total of 4 routines to perform from August to October. Now that my time on the football field has ended, my practices are twice a week for 3 hours each day. During competition season which is normally February to July and usually every weekend. I perform about 5 routines at each competition and each one has a different set of rules and requirements.

What is a favorite memory with fire twirling?
My favorite memory is when I had my first no drop during my fire routine at my opening performance for the season. The stadium filled student section with all of my supportive peers, parents, teachers, community members, and visiting school all cheering and amazed filled me with so much joy because I accomplished my biggest dream for my twirling career.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Applying to my dream college and figuring out how to do everything on my own is my biggest accomplishment. In the fall of 2022, I’ll be attending college and majoring in exercise science with some of my closest friends I’ve met through school.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Put in all the hard work in early. Sacrifice the fun stuff to get rewards later in life. I’ve sacrificed hanging out with my friends for years, and just in my senior year I started to complete my goals and started to be more social with my friends with our activities.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself finishing my Master’s Degree in Athletic Training and applying to a professional sports team to be their athletic trainer and personal trainer. I hope to have my own home (a barndominium specifically) and be married with two kids.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
When I have time for an activity, I like to go to rodeos with my friends at Buckhorn or work on trucks. Bull riding has a lot of excitement but can be scary when you know someone riding. Working on trucks is stressful especially when you don’t have much idea of what part you’re working on.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I’m able to learn a short combination of dance in 3 minutes and perform it to the best of its ability.

3 Things on your bucket list

        1. Go on a weekend road trip with my friends
        2. Buy my own home
        3. Ride dirt bikes or a motorcycle

Who do you find inspiring?
My dance coach Tiffany Seitz, Miss Pennsylvania 2019 & 2020. I’ve worked with her since 2017 and I’m so thankful to have her in my life filling me with knowledge of just a simple thing called life.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe it’s my hard work and determination. I’ve been persnickety with being at the top. I’ve been an overachiever since I was a little girl and always trying to get to the next level of whatever I’m working on.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
My dog Cooper Raymond is my rock. If I didn’t have him, I’m not sure who I would be today. He’s taught me to not only be responsible for myself but also for another entity in the world. He relies on me, and I rely on him, some of my friends call him my emotional support dog even though he’s not registered as one. He’s always excited to see me when I come home after my long busy day and snuggles with me before bed.

Ethan Carlson – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Janet Roberson/BluMoon Photography
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ethan is an outstanding young man who has a passion for serving others, he believes the Lord is leading him into a life of ministry. Ethan is a senior in high school, where he is very busy with tennis and cross country. (Ethan just ran his first marathon!)
Ethan recently preached his first sermon at his church, and he is looking forward to an upcoming mission trip to Peru this summer. He is currently heading up a committee to put on a Prom for Special Needs students in his hometown. We need more young people like Ethan!

Tell us about your calling to ministry.
I got saved at the age of 8 years old. However, it was not until the summer after my ninth grade year that I got serious about my relationship with Christ. I realized that many adults said the main thing they regretted in their lives was wasting their teenage years. I had already wasted my middle school years, I was not going to waste my high school years. Since then I have had many opportunities on mission trips, leading Bible studies, and I have even preached in my youth group.

What are your ultimate goals with it?
My ultimate goal is that I bring many people to Christ. In anything and everything I do, I want to bring God glory. There is nothing that matters more to me than that. If I die being known for anything, I want to be known for living my life to serve and bring glory to Christ. When people think of me, I want them to see my savior.

What is your special needs prom about and why did you decide to do it?
The special needs prom is such a cool event. This past school year I got the opportunity to spend a lot of time with our special needs students. I also was able to work with them being I worked in the office at my high school. One day, one of our students with special needs walked in a little late for school. She was smiling very big and pointing to her face. She was very proud to show us that she was wearing makeup and lipstick. As she walked to her class, I watched as she tried to show multiple students in the hallway how beautiful she was, however, not one gave her any attention. It was at that moment, I realized, these kids want to feel special just like everyone else. They just want attention, to feel noticed, to feel important. So I came up with the idea of the special needs prom. A prom that would honor all the students and show them that God has such an incredible plan for their life.

Who did you enlist to help with this endeavor and what are you/did you find most rewarding in the process?
I was picked to be on a Chick-fil-A leadership team this school year. We were trained and taught how to be better leaders in our community. I presented my idea to the leadership team, and they decided to help to put the prom on. The most rewarding part of this process is knowing how special and important we will make the students feel. The smiles on their faces will be priceless.

What does it entail on your end to be a youth intern?
Being the youth intern gives me many great opportunities to serve others and Christ. At my job, I help to plan youth trips, serve the students, lead Bible studies, and preach. I am able to do a lot of speaking and serving which prepares me for a life of ministry.

What have you learned about yourself in the process?
This process has only made me more confident in my calling to ministry. I have grown much closer to Christ in the process.

How did you find Janet Roberson/BluMoon Photography and why did you choose your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I have known Mrs. Jan since I was very young. Not only is she my neighbor, but we have attended church together my entire life as well. Mrs. Jan asked me to be one of her models for blue moon photography. I was very surprised she asked me because I do not consider myself a model. After seeing the pictures she had taken of me, we easily chose her for my senior pictures. She is one of the best without a doubt and I would recommend her to anyone.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One exciting fact is I helped to restart FCA at Pierce County High School. We went from having 1 or 2 kids a week to 30 kids a week. Two weeks we had over 100 students.
I have been the top Cross Country runner all 4 years of high school and also have started varsity tennis all 4 years.

Claudia Yanss – Maryland
Nomination by Stacey Yanss
Photography by Jeri Tidwell Dance Photography
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Claudia aspires to be a professional dancer and is committed to her dance training and to her studies. She trains and competes in ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, hip hop and lyrical. She loves to use the stage and the artistry of dance to tell beautiful stories.

What would you most like to talk about?
I would love to talk about the art of dance and how it is such a big part of so many people's lives. I am in a college credit history class and am interested in historical events.

Tell us about the art of dance.
The art of dance is very important to me and many people all around the world. Dance is an outlet for me to express myself, but there is also an athletic aspect to the art of expression. I love the idea of being able to keep my body healthy while also experimenting with the creation of movement. Dancing provides me a way to emotionally connect myself to movement, while also pushing my body to further every day.

What has your dance experience been like?
My dance experience has been ongoing for a very long time. I started dancing at 3 years old and began competition dance when I was 9 years old. I have always loved dancing, but I feel that as I get older, it continues to grow. As a dancer, I always try to constantly make progress in my dance journey, and I have improved since I first started dancing. Currently, I am getting pre-professional training as I get into high school, and hope to have dance as part of my future.

What types of dance do you love the most?
This is a very hard question! If I had to choose, I would say my favorites are jazz and contemporary. I love jazz because it is very expressive, it also gives the dancer a chance to command the stage and is super fun! Contemporary is also very expressive and lets me tell a compelling story to the audience.

What do you think is the hardest part about dance?
I think the hardest part about dance is consistency. A major part of dance is repetition, and the ability to work off the repetitive movements. Dancing can involve repeating a specific move, having to fix a certain aspect of your dancing, or having dance class almost every day. The thing is, as a dancer, you must work from that repetition and is why consistency is the hardest part.

Do you do performing only dance or dance competitions as well?
I do both performing only and competitive dance, and I really love both! Performing only dance really gives the dancer a chance to perform without getting a score, but it can be a lot of fun to perform and give it my all on stage. I also love competition dance because you can get a score and feedback, which helps the dancer see their dancing from a different perspective that can help them improve their dancing.

What do you think non-dancers may not realize about the sport?
Some may not realize dance is very physically demanding, but also requires emotional connection and artistry. Dance is a large process too. You can’t just skip steps in your journey to make it to the end. Hard work is a must in order to pursue a career in dance.

How did you find see Jeri Tidwell Photography and what made you know she was the right photographer for you?
I know Ms. Jeri through my studio owner, and she takes recital photos for our studio every year. She is an amazing photographer! She is very professional and fun at the same time. I can trust her to take the best photo possible! She knows dance poses and is so creative!

What has your favorite photoshoot so far been like?

My favorite photoshoot so far was when we went to different locations. We did studio shots and outdoor shots and it was a lot of fun! I loved changing outfits and posing in nature, on stairs and in different outdoor light.

If you could dance in any Broadway show or change places with a dancer in any movie or tv show, which one would it be, what would be your ideal role, and why?
If I could dance in any show, I would be a Radio City Rockette. The Rockettes are so hard-working and are amazing dancers. I really admire them! The show looks like a lot of fun and has many precise movements. It would be awesome to be a Rockette!

What opportunities has dance provided for you that you otherwise wouldn’t have had?
Dance has given me the opportunity to be very healthy. It also gave me the opportunity to take in a lot of information in a short period of time and work quickly with that information given.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am an animal lover who would love to volunteer to foster cats and kittens when I am old enough this year! My family recently adopted a foster dog, and it makes me happy to spend time with my pets.

Tell us more about your foster dog & other pets.

We have two dogs Pepper and Poppy. We also have two cats Bubby and Luna. We fostered Poppy from a local rescue organization and decided to keep her. She is fun and playful and likes to snuggle. She loves our other dog Pepper too!

What are three things on your bucket list?
Train with the Radio City Rockettes. See BTS live in concert. Have a pet hamster.

Why is a 4.0 important to you and how hard is it to maintain? What type of study schedule do you keep?
A 4.0 is important to me because it shows my hard work and dedication to not only my education right now, but my future. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA is very difficult. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication to your studies. I typically use a quizlet in order to study. I feel that it is a great and effective way to study.

Tell us about your basketball career. When did you get started and where are you with it now? What position do you play?
I began playing basketball in elementary school. I fell in love with the sport after watching my older sister play. I am currently a Junior in high school and started varsity this year. I typically am a shooting guard but I can also play point guard.

What is your team like and what is a favorite memory with them?

My team was full of seniors this season. They were all a mix of personalities and made basketball pretty fun this year. Due to COVID, it was my first varsity season and they all made me feel welcome. My favorite memory with them was making our pre-game tik toks.

When did you start playing softball and what do you love most about it?

I started playing softball in Kindergarten. I love the rush of the sport and how you never know what's going to happen. Everything is so unexpected which keeps the game both exciting and interesting. I also love how our team feels like one big family.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment is being moved to the varsity squads as soon as age eligible. This year in basketball I was the only junior varsity starter. I also had my first out of the park homerun at softball earlier this week, which I feel is a great accomplishment.

What do you do for your part time job and what have you learned about yourself while being a working girl?
For my part time job, I work as a cashier at Giant Food Stores. I have learned that my friendly disposition helps me greatly with customer service. I also feel that I have learned some important adult life skills such as time management, the importance of saving money and dependability.

How did you find Amy Hedges Photography and how did you choose your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found out about Amy Hedges Photography through past AHP Teen Ambassadors. I applied to be a part of the Teen Ambassador team because I felt it was a great way to make friends with students from other school districts and also give back to the community. It allowed me to meet new people and make new connections. It also allowed me to be a part of numerous community service activities. I loved my experience as an AHP Teen Ambassador. I enjoyed the activities and photoshoots with my teammates and loved being a part of the Jared Box Project.

Tell us more about your volunteer opportunities.

I was an active participant in the Jared Box Project. We made boxes of toys and sent them to children in the hospital. I held toy drives as well as put several boxes together myself. Along with this, I have volunteered at the Fulton County Medical Center where I would deliver cards and sing Christmas carols to the residents. Along with this, I would volunteer at the church where I assisted in wrapping Christmas gifts for families in need.

What service projects have you enjoyed the most & why?

I enjoyed singing to the residents at the medical center. I have always loved the elderly and I enjoy going to visit them around Christmas. I also enjoyed being a member of the Jared Box Project. I feel that I made an impact and put a smile on the faces of children who were sick and in the hospital.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

What many people do not know about me is that I have a significant hearing impairment in both ears. I wear hearing aids and also rely on lip reading. I have never considered my hearing loss a disability but instead have put in the extra work required to be successful both academically and personally. My hearing impairment is the reason I am enrolled in nursing class at my school, am working hard to assure acceptance at a prestigious college and plan to have a career as a physician assistant in the field of audiology where I can help others.

What do you wish people knew about talking to you with a hearing impairment that most people do not know or understand?
I think it would be helpful if people knew how important it is to make eye contact and look directly at people when speaking. When relying on lip reading it can be very difficult to communicate with someone that isn’t looking at you when they speak. Also, speaking at your normal rate/speed is important when lip reading. Often people attempt to slow down their speech rate thinking that will make it easier for the person reading their lips, when it actually makes it harder.

What did you need to do to win District Champion for Nursing Assistant at SkillsUSA? What will you need to do at States and when is it?
In order to win District Champion for Nursing Assistant at SkillsUSA I was judged on how well I completed vital signs and handwashing. I also had to take a 50 question test. I will attend states April 6, 7, and 8 in Hershey, PA. The skills that I will be tested on will not be released until we arrive.

Picture
Photography by Amy Hedges Photography
What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Last year I underwent 4 major ear surgeries in a 12 month period. These surgeries caused me to miss a significant amount of school. I think my biggest accomplishment was maintaining my 4.0 GPA, managing my sports and my job during this time.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

If I was to give someone advice, I would tell them to never give up. When you really want something, you have to work for it. It may feel as if it's unachievable, however pushing through the hard times is what truly makes a person stand out.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I hope to be finishing up my college education and officially become a Physician Assistant. I would love to work at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in the ENT department in order to help children like me who have a hearing impairment.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?

Recently, for Christmas we got a puppy so I enjoy taking him for walks. I also enjoy going to the gym and working out in my free time.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I do not have any hidden talents.

3 Things on your bucket list
Skydiving
Fly on a plane
Go to Jamaica

Who do you find inspiring?
I think that my mom is really inspiring. She always pushes me to be the best version of myself. I truly believe that if she did not push me, I would not be as successful as what I am today. My mom raised kids completely on her own. She supports us in everything that we do. My mom has always been my biggest inspiration and supporter and I am very thankful for her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

I think that I am inspiring because regardless of the hardships that I have been through, I’ve pushed through and never given up. I believe I lead by example. I work hard to make sure I am being my best self. I show others kindness and make sure that I am helpful to those around me.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

Thank-you very much for this amazing opportunity. I am very grateful for the nomination from Amy Hedges and have enjoyed my experience with Inspiring Teens. I am really blessed to have had this experience.

Nomination: Maria Arriaga is such a beautiful soul! After high school, she is going to pursue a degree in Psychology at UW- Green Bay. She has a strong passion for helping and understanding people. Maria plans to help kids who don't have the support they need in their lives and is eager to help them. She has been through so much and is looking to make a difference in our world. She's the true definition of generous.

What would you most like to be interviewed about/what should we definitely know about you?
There are many questions that I wouldn’t have the perfect answer to. Though, one thing about me is that battling through some of the things i’ve been through, i’ve learned and grown tremendously as a person. From independence to self love.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I find joy in motivating my peers and those close to me when they need it the most. Seeing them down would be some of the hardest things I have to witness. I like reminding people that they are so much more than their past. Pushing them to be better, not for the people around them but for themselves.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Something that I could talk about would be the impact of social media on todays teens. During my virtual school year of 2020-2021 due to Covid, I went through some of the hardest times. Not only do social platforms expose teens to unrealistic beauty standards but they also expose younger kids to things that no longer preserve their childhood.

I would like to be interviewed about lacrosse. I have been playing lacrosse for about 5 years now last year our team went the furthest any team before us has gone to the second round of the playoffs. I am the lacrosse team captain and it feels good for people to respect you and trust you as much as my teammates do. I am the Goalie for Southeast Lacrosse a position I didn't see myself in when I first started. They asked who wanted to be Goalie at the first practice I attended and no one made a sound so that was when I decided that the position I wanted to play somewhere where not a lot of people can play I wanted to challenge myself. Now we have gotten lots of coverage from the local newspaper and we have many new kids this year coming out for lacrosse. We also were able to start a Southeast Girls Lacrosse team.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am actually an aspiring photographer and film maker I recently got accepted to Kent State University for Digital Media Production. I take photos for my friends and edit them. I love editing and photography. I also love sports so I will take pictures of my friends wrestling. I am not a part of yearbook because I decided I wanted to be able to shoot what I wanted. I have given some of my pictures to yearbook for them to be used. I want to either work for the NFL, be a creative director or even a freelance photographer. My biggest inspiration for becoming a creative director is Cole Bennett he has his own company called Lyrical Lemonade and makes great music videos for my favorite artists.

What should we know about you?

I am very passionate about mentorship and teaching. I strive to honor the memory of my late music teacher by teaching others through private music lessons and being Head Drum Major in my high school band. I also mentor people through sharing my testimony in the book “I AM”, in which I am a co-author of in conjunction with my school’s leadership team. In this novel I share my fight with sickness due to anxiety and how my faith healed me. I hope to become an English teacher in the future to feed my love for teaching.

Tell us about your music - what got you interested and why did you choose the oboe?
As a young musician, my parents were in debt and unable to pay for my music lessons. At twelve years old I worked around the town to save up lesson money. I started taking lessons with Bob Burks and instantly had a connection with him. After my private teacher told me I had the potential to continue professionally, I started working very hard. Now I’m absolutely in love with the instrument! I take every chance I can to play.

What does it mean to be the first-chair oboist for all four years in the state of Georgia's All-State Orchestra? What opportunities has this provided you?
The All-State Band and Orchestra clinic is a selective event held every year in Athens, Georgia. Students must audition to be accepted into this program. It’s very prestigious— on average a high school has one student make All-State every four years. Attending every year has been an honor; the musical experience is unparalleled, and the friends I have made are lifelong ones.

What does a Drum Major do and why is this a prestigious position?
A Drum Major is the conductor of a marching band– during halftime they direct the band’s halftime show from a podium. Being a Drum Major has been one of the most demanding and rewarding positions. It requires lots of confidence, precision, and energy. As a drum major, it is your responsibility to train with the other drum majors and look exactly alike, communicate information between the staff and the band members, and be a leader during hardship. I’m very lucky to have worked with amazing co-drum majors and a wonderful band; they made my job easy!

What is your favorite type of music to play and why?
I love playing music from the Romantic Period (1825-1900). There are some amazing (and occasionally daunting!) oboe solos in that period of repertoire.

What have you learned about yourself while teaching others to play?
It is always a good reminder for me musically to teach others basics about the oboe. In a way, I fall in love with the instrument again by seeing others fall in love with it for the first time. My favorite aspect of teaching is seeing something click with students. When they can implement a new concept right away, I get so excited!

Why did you choose Michelle Petteys as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Simply put, Mrs. Petteys is one-of-a-kind. She makes everyone feel like themselves in their pictures and is willing to try anything to achieve the look you want. I have taken pictures with her twice and each time I have finished feeling beautiful and relaxed. Mrs. Petteys is also a superb Spanish teacher at my high school! Her dedication to photography and teaching is inspiring.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I took part in the renaming of my school’s hallways: an effort that diversified the representation of US generals. Within school, I am on the leadership team for NHS and am part of Beta Club, NEHS, and Culture Club. I have received awards for my poetry and speech submissions to local writing competitions. I am an alumni of the Chattanooga Youth Symphony and the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program.

What made you want to take such a big initiative to rename the hallways and what did this entail?
Renaming my school’s hallways was heavy on my heart when racial injustice was at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Our hallways were named after famous military generals– however there was no diversity, and some men featured were generals of the Confederate army. I emailed my principal and asked that he consider changing our hallway names. He responded saying that he was already planning on doing so and that other members of the community had also reached out urging for the same thing. We now have hallways that represent men and women of all cultures and nationalities.

What do you do on the leadership team for NHS?
The NHS leadership team is responsible for putting together monthly meetings and organizing projects for members. My favorite project this year has been making Valentine’s Day cards and delivering them to our local police stations, firefighters, teachers, and medical workers. We got lots of positive feedback!

What are your strongest leadership skills?
I am thankful that I stick to my decisions as a leader. I take confidence in the moves I make and trust myself that they will benefit people, even if they don’t see it. Especially as a Drum Major, it is important to make a decision and not be swayed by people’s opinions. I am grateful for the leaders and staff that supported me in making those decisions and guided my thinking.

What do you do in Beta Club and what is a favorite accomplishment?
Beta Club is another service club. My favorite projects in Beta Club have been helping local families when they are in need because of crises. Multiple times, The Beta Club has collected thousands of dollars in gift cards to support our community.

What are some of your favorite high school memories?
Some of my favorite activities have been painting my senior parking spot and traveling to football games with the band. A specific favorite memory was playing our halftime show in heavy rain during band camp– we were soaked from head to toe, but it was so fun!

Tell us more about Culture Club.
Culture Club was founded by one of my friends when she was a freshman. It is all about highlighting different cultures and informing the student body about them. Every month a different culture is featured, and the members create a visual to put in the hallways about that culture!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Confidence and being a pioneer. Because of the small town I live in, moving far away and competing against musicians with more resources felt intimidating at first. But I persevered and was given the opportunity to audition at some of the most elite music schools in the nation. Don’t be afraid to be first-- show others that this journey is possible and empower them to pioneer their own story. The struggles, waiting periods, and ultimately blessings that have come my way have shown me that motivating others to continue on the road less traveled is a story worth telling.

What do you enjoy writing about?
Writing is an emotional outlet for me, so I usually write about my worries. I’ve written about college, mental health, and the stresses of modern life.

Share with us more about the book you are co-authoring. How did it come about, what is it about, and what do you hope others will gain from reading it?
This book was the brainchild of the Heritage football coach and leadership teacher. He wanted to create something that could encourage young people to make the right decisions in a world that supports wrong ones while also sharing real stories and testimonies from people who have gone through very difficult things. I believe if this book can change one person’s life, all of our work will have paid off. “I AM” is available now on Amazon– all proceeds go to our sister school in Nicaragua!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

Playing oboe at my late teacher’s funeral was heart-wrenching. I got through it because I knew it would make him proud if I played with confidence.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Remember that your worth is not based on your productivity or performance.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to teach English at the middle or high school level and continue playing oboe.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Reading!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I wish I did! Maybe it’s yet to be discovered…

3 Things on your bucket list
-See the Northern Lights
-Travel to Greece
-Go see a gameshow live

Who do you find inspiring?
My parents are the most inspiring to me. They have taught me so much about being positive in hardship and the strength of love.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I have a unique story– I hope that my unconventional circumstances and my perseverance is inspiring to others.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I’m so thankful for this opportunity!

Mariam Fawaz – Michigan
Nomination by Ahmad Fawaz
Photography by Mariam's mother & friends
Issue 54 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Mariam Fawaz is 16-year-old girl from Dearborn Heights Michigan. In February 2021 she attempted to start a Model United Nations club at her school, she had done everything but by November 2021 she had asked over 25+ teachers to be an advisor however was rejected from each one and wasn’t discouraged but inspired she had met with the mayor of Dearborn Heights and then created a 2 citywide MUN club that is competing at the largest conference in the Midwest its first year as a club, she made sure financially every student who wanted to had the opportunity.

Picture
Tell us more about Model United Nations Club. What is it and why did you want to start one at your school so bad?
Model UN is an educational simulation and academic activity where students simulate the bodies of the United Nations. If you’re familiar with the United Nations, as a Model UN member you would step into the roles of these delegates and represent countries from all over the world and work together to find resolutions to real global issues as the United Nations would.
I wanted to start it first because I wanted to bring this fun educational activity to our community when it was not yet introduced. The more obstacles I ran into and was told I cannot, the more I wanted it to be a success.

What do you do when you compete at conferences?
Every delegate is given a country to represent and a committee with certain topics to debate. You would then work with other delegates to find a resolution to one of the real global issues you’d be debating.

How did you get the mayor to help you when none of your teachers would?
I contacted the mayor of my city (Mayor Bill Bazzi of Dearborn heights) and presented my idea and asked for his help. Our mayor is very involved in the youth of our community and was a huge help in making this and even was involved, whether it was being a guest speaker at one of our meetings or helping with transportation to our conference.

How did you then get other teens to join from your school and others?

I spread the word through social media, I and the other founders created flyers to send to every principal in our community as well as sent to all club's Instagram pages to spread the word.

What did you learn about yourself in this process?
I learned that as teenagers when an adult says we can’t do something, we believe that we can’t do it. In this process I learned that’s not always the case and that with the right determination we can make that change and make that impact regardless of age.

What leadership skill would you say is your top one in completing this endeavor?
Determination, I believe my determination was the most effective skill in creating this. With all the obstacles we faced in starting this without my determination for it to be a success I don’t think we would have been as successful.

Picture
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Once I started this club it not only got all different students involved and they've gotten comfortable with us and became a space where minds can grow, this the club has inspired others to start their clubs and be more involved. I think the most inspiring part about it, all is that I didn't start high school as this a person who is involved in school and the community but I became it, which most people believe that however, you start high school is who you will be for the rest of your life.

What is your favorite thing to debate and why?
One of my favorite topics to debate is the real genocides that our world faces. In the middle east and Africa, genocide is a constant issue. For example, the invasion of the people of Palestine. Or the bombings in Syria, or Yemen is experiencing the world's worst food security crisis. These are real-world problems being affected by many every day but are rarely talked about therefore I love when I get the opportunity to debate about them and speak about these real global issues.

What volunteer work do you do, and which is your favorite?
I volunteer throughout my community with school events, Community Food Drives, and Local campaigns. My favorite would be volunteering with the Eternal Light Organization. In our community, a man named Sam Bazzi decided to give back and start the organization. In which they put together boxes of food and groceries and hold food drives as often as they can. Anyone in need may just drive up and no questions asked, no paper to fill out, if you need food you can get just that and I just believe that to be such a great thing to be a part of.

What is student congress and what is your role in it?
In student congress, we have our elected students like President, Vice President, secretary, etc. Student congress is where all the students in the club vote and plan events and fundraising for our school. In this club, I hold the position of a delegate.

What subjects do you tutor and who do you tutor?
I mentor my peers and help them create a plan for college. I also tutor younger students in elementary or middle school in all subjects but particularly focused on language arts and literature.

What do you love best about investment club?
I love that I have the opportunity to learn about investments and stocks. This is very beneficial in the real world but not taught often enough so I’m glad I can.

Picture
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I believe it would be mental health and the different ways we can improve in society by bettering our and others' mental health.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I believe one of my largest hardships is dealing with anxiety. When I had gotten my first anxiety attack, I had felt my breathing continuously getting harder. I didn’t know why I was feeling this way but the way I got over it was by surrounding myself with people who calm that anxiety and give me the support I need.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t try to be liked by all, and don’t let anyone's title hold rank over you. Focus on your goal and don’t let others stop you.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years in the future, I see myself having an education. I will have gotten a college degree from a top university but I will also be working on my next mark in the world. I will be constantly working on ways I can make bigger impacts in not only my community and society but in the world.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Writing, when the reality of the world becomes almost unbearable I like to take out my laptop and start writing and feel the characters I’m writing, become them, and escape from reality in that writing.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
When I was ten, I started learning to play the viola, it’s been a hidden talent of mine for quite some time now.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Speak in front of the actual UN about pressing global issues.
2. Win a Nobel Peace Prize
3. Be the woman that inspires younger generations to not let the world stop them.

 Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person to me would have to be my older sister, Nena, at 18 years old. She ran for county commissioner although she didn’t win and despite all other opinions, she won 40% of the votes and then proceeded to start her very own title company. Most importantly she’s been my biggest inspiration as a big sister, as a person. Nena never let anyone stop her from becoming the extraordinary woman she is. She is a successful human being not just in accomplishments but as a person she hasn’t let anyone make her cruel or cold-hearted but a better person. She is proof that the hate you get can only affect you if you let it, something I often fail to believe. She is the reason I have the determination and motivation that I do.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

I think my motivation is the most inspiring. That no matter who tried to stop me I didn’t let them, because of the determination that I had to bring this to our community.

What should we definitely know about you?
I moved here (Ringgold, GA) right before high school from Ohio. I’ve come a long way but I love everyone I've met and the community I am in. I have opened up my shell a ton and I've started to become more comfortable putting myself out there. I am a cheerleader at my high school and I got cheer captain. I also got nominated for homecoming queen which took me way by surprise. I cried so many times. I love Angela, my photographer and how comfortable she makes me feel and how she helped me express myself in my photos. I have a big heart and would do almost anything for anyone. I am so blessed to even be considered for this magazine and I don’t want to take any of it for granted.

Tell us about your cheer career. How did you get started, how many years have you cheered and what do you love most about it?
I was a cheerleader at my old school in Ohio, but there our school did not have insurance so we could not stunt or tumble, we just cheered on the sidelines for football games. When I moved here to Ringgold, GA I was so excited to try out but when I got there, I was very intimidated because I realized these girls did crazy flips and stunts I have never done before. I was lucky enough to have made the team that first year and my coach tried to get me to fly, but I was not very good at it. She told me she saw potential in me though and started having me base. I have been a base ever since and have learned many new tumbling skills that I used to grow up wishing I could do. The thing I love the most about cheer is probably the trust and love we have for each other. It is a crazy thing to trust some girls to throw you in the air while you spin or flip and hope they catch you, and as the base, hope the flyer does not kick you in the face. I have grown so close to my teammates and trust them so much and they are a family to me that I will never forget.

What is a favorite accomplishment from cheer?
Overall when it comes to cheer and my team's accomplishments I am very proud of us for having an undefeated regular season all four years I have been there. For me personally though, I feel so accomplished to be their captain. I love my team and I love that they can trust me and listen to me without taking it as I am bossing them around. We all learn from each other and take each other's advice. Honestly every girl on the team could be our captain and do an exceptional job at it. We all work so hard.

What do you love about your cheer team and what is a favorite memory with them?
My cheer team has such a weird and goofy sense of humor. We have so many inside jokes with each other that nobody else would be able to understand. We could have the hardest practice ever and literally be kicking each other in the face and landing on each other and still have a laugh together. If our team did not have the chemistry, it has we would not be nearly as good as we are. I am so thankful for all my teammates and where we all have come from. My favorite memory with them would probably have to be after I got nominated homecoming queen and they all ran towards me and gave me a huge group hug on the field. We were all crying and screaming, and they made me feel so loved and thankful for all of them. It is nice knowing you always have another family to go to that will always be there for you for your biggest accomplishments and hardest times.

Do you plan on cheering competitively after high school?
Honestly, probably not. I love cheerleading and I am so upset to have to part from it. For this new chapter in my life though I am going to start working more often while also going to college and going into nursing school. I feel as though having cheer on top of that is just going to bring more stress to my life and to my body. The college I am planning on going to as of now also does not have a cheer team. If I end up going to The Ohio State University though I will definitely think about it!

How did you meet Angela with Angela Williams Photography and why did you know she was definitely the one to take your senior pictures?

I knew seniors from the year before who had been using Angela for their pictures. I saw them and loved them, so I reached out to her about taking my prom pictures. She responded and told me she looked at my Instagram and was curious if I wanted to be a senior rep for her! I was so shocked and so excited but honestly kind of nervous. When I met Angela for my prom pictures that year that's when I knew for sure I wanted to be her representative. Angela is one of the most genuine and kind people I have ever met. She made me feel so safe and comfortable and I just love her so much. I could not imagine doing it with anyone else. I am so thankful for her.

What was the experience like leading up to the shoot and then the shoot and then seeing your pictures? Tell us all your happy thoughts!
Leading up the photoshoot it was just going to be a valentine’s photoshoot. Angela though had an amazing idea to bring my prom dress I never got to wear before I sold it. It is hot pink and would look perfect for a valentines shoot. I was so excited! I actually forgot to bring heels with the dress, so I had to do it barefoot and try to hide my feet in the photos. We were there for a long time, and it was freezing cold outside, but it was definitely worth it!! When I saw my pictures, they turned out better than I even expected they would. I loved them. When I found out I got featured Angela and I was so excited I could cry. It was amazing.

What will you miss most about high school?
There is a lot I will miss about high school. I have always loved getting to go to school and get outside of the house. I love getting to see all my friends and learn new things. I love the challenging parts of high school that really make me push myself. The thing I will miss the most though is leaving all my friends. I love everyone at our school, and we all get along so well, and it is always so much fun even in the stressful times. I am going to miss seeing everyone in class, in lunch, and at practice. I am going to miss that a lot.

What are you looking forward to most after high school?
After high school there are a lot of things I am going to miss but a lot of things I am going to look forward to as well. I am just excited to get my life started and meet new people and start somewhere new. It is going to be exciting going somewhere new and I am excited to start working towards getting into nursing school. I am also excited because I am planning on staying at home so I will still get to live with my parents and see my friends from high school.

Where would your friends say we'd find you and what would you be doing if you had no responsibilities for the day?
My friends would tell you I would be at home with my mom. Whenever I have no responsibilities or plans, I am so excited to just sit on the couch and watch shows and movies with my mom. My mom is my best friend, and I am closer with her than I am with most people. It is so relaxing and stress relieving when I know I can stay at home for the day with nothing to worry about with my mama.

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
If I could travel anywhere, it would probably be back to Ohio for a while so I could see my family and all of my old friends. I miss them so much and when I lived there my whole family would come over almost every weekend and we would have bonfires and just hang out. I am super close with my family and my cousins, and they are my favorite people. It is so sad that I never get to see them anymore so if I got the opportunity, I would take it.

This image was taken by life touch photos the day I got announced as homecoming queen!

Tell us about your homecoming court experience.

Homecoming was an unbelievable and unforgettable experience. I have watched previous years of homecoming come and go and would always imagine getting to walk out there in a princess dress and always dream to do that but never thought I would be able to. When the time came to vote for who got to be on the court, I thought about running but learned we were not allowed to campaign for it so I did not think I would have a chance. I mentioned it to some of my friends though and talked to them about how I wanted to do it. The next week I was sitting in class, and they went over the intercom and announced the five princesses on the court, and I was one of them! I was so shocked, and my class congratulated me. When I was walking out on the field that day, I was so blessed I even got the opportunity to do that, I was honestly not even thinking about the fact I could get queen. I do not think anyone ever really thinks they are going to get it. I was the last to walk out so when I got there everything happened so fast and they announced I won. The whole cheer team ran up to me surrounding me and all I could hear was the crowd cheering. I cried about 10 times that night. I will never forget that moment.

What was the hardest part of being a teen in covid-19?
The hardest part of being a teen during covid-19 is missing out on a whole year of high school. We were not going to school and I was trying to take calculus and chemistry online which was super difficult. On top of that I never got to see my friends and my cheer season got pushed back super far. We did not even get to have a homecoming dance that year. It was hard knowing if you were to go out and happen to get someone sick you could take their life. Nobody wanted to risk it. I could not drive for a while after my 16th birthday either because of covid and appointments being booked so far. You can really not just pick one thing when it comes to how covid has affected people. I am so glad it is starting to calm down even though it is still definitely an issue.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Angela pretty much covered most of it up for me! I moved here from Ohio right before high school and it was really hard at first as I faced some challenges and was struggling to fit in. I have learned to kill people with kindness over the years though and the best thing you can do is work hard and be yourself!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it?
I would talk about personality disorders or dreams. I find personality disorders so fascinating, especially dissociative personality disorders. I also love the idea of dreams and how they work. Pretty much just the brain in general is so amazing to me and I think it’s crazy all the stuff we are capable of. We don’t even know everything yet!
