Braelyn Arnold – Pennsylvania
Nomination & Photography by L. Welsh Photography, LLC

Nomination: Braelyn Arnold is inspiring to me because by 17 she was already licensed to work in a salon and has taken advantage of these years to hone in on those amazing skills! Braelyn will be continuing to work at the salon while going to college. She has twirled for 7 years (4 as a Majorette and 4 on the Competition team) and has cheered for a total of 11 years, 5 through her high school. 3/5 as a Captain and on Varsity 10, 11, and 12th grade! Braelyn is talented, beautiful, kind, hard working, smart and inspiring!

What do you love about working in a salon and what exactly do you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and have had my license since my Junior year of high school. My favorite services are updos, foilin, and coloring hair. I am also an assistant to the other stylists. I love having a career that is different every day and that is a continuous learning experience.

What do you excel at in the salon?
I excel at customer service. I'm a very talkative and outgoing individual so I really enjoy getting to know my clients.

What have you learned about yourself in the workforce?
I have learned that I am a perfectionist. I take pride in my work and want my clients to love their hair. I've learned that I'm better working as a team than individually, yet, I'm very independent, efficient and a self starter.

Tell us about your twirl career.
I started twirling in sixth grade. I never planned on going far with it until my coach and instructor invited me to perform on the studio's competition team. I competed for 4 years and tried out for our marching band's majorette squad my Freshman year. I have twirled throughout my Senior year and just completed my final parade of my career on Memorial Day.

What led you to cheering and what do you love most about it?
I started cheering when I was in kindergarten, then when I was finally old enough to join our midget squads, once I started, I never stopped! My neighbor was a high school cheerleader and I admired her. I love the friendships and comradery. I love creating and teaching the dances to my team. Cheer takes teamwork and dedication and I love that it's finally being recognized as a sport.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
I have several, but I always loved the away game bus rides and playing music and dancing and singing on the bus. My other favorite memory is how our team supported our friend and teammate who was diagnosed with cancer going into our Freshman year, and helping her to fight and beat leukemia.

What did it mean to you to become Captain? What were your roles and responsibilities?
It meant everything because it was everything I had dreamt of and worked for in all of my years cheering. I was responsible for choreographing and teaching dances and routines to my team, creating special event t-shirts for the squad and communication between my coach and the team, just to name a few.

What is your best leadership quality?
I'm a good problem solver and a team leader. I bring positivity and fun to my squad.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I live with my parents, Doug and Breanne. I have a twin brother, Grant and a younger brother who is 14, named Bryce. I fit in because I have learned to be easy going having two siblings who are brothers, yet I stand out because I am the only girl and I participate in the most activities.

What is a favorite family memory or tradition you hope never ends?
My family plays "The Night Before Christmas" every year, where my Grammy reads the story and we pass gifts around a circle every time she says the word "and". It's a fun tradition and something the whole family looks forward to each year.

What do you like to do most with your friends?
We love going to Buffalo Wild Wings and Target. It is something my Majorette friends and I try to do together often.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have had to withstand dealing with people who are not true friends. It has made me an inspiring person, because I choose not to be like those people. I want to inspire kids and adults alike to be kind to everyone, that we may be different from each other, but that we all deserve to be treated equally.

Tell us about your softball career.
Throughout my 14 years on the softball field, I’ve received so much support for whatever my dreams were. As a little girl all I wanted to do is have some fun and play softball. As time has gone on, I continued to do what I love, and it has got me to this point. The hours of hard work and dedication I put into this sport is unreal. The work I put in has paid off and that’s why I’m glad to say I’m at WVSSAC Triple-A State Champion. I will be able to continue my love for the game at the next level.

What position do you play and what do you love most about it?
As a little girl I wanted to be able to make an impact on the game. When I was 10 years old, I decided I wanted to get into pitching. With being a pitcher comes a boat load of hard work, dedication, and responsibility, but it was worth it. I love pitching because it makes me feel in control of the game. It is one of the reasons I love the game so much.

Tell us more about the awards you've received in softball.
I’ve been blessed with several awards over my softball career. During my time at John Marshall High School our team has made it to the state tournament three times while not having my freshman year due to COVID. Being at the state tournament three time I’ve been honored with All Tournament Team for my stats. Along with OVAC 5A first team for my stats in our conference play. For two years in a row, I’ve been named Captain of the All Valley Team for my pitching stats. I’m extremely blessed to be named First Team All-State in all of West Virginia for the stats I’ve put up during my seasons.

What do you love most about helping younger kids learn softball? And what is a lesson you try to teach that you hope they'll never forget?
What I love most about working with younger girls is sharing my knowledge of the game with them. They are the future of our community and to be role model in their lives is extremely important to me. They remind me of my little self and being eager to learn something new. I try and teach them to play the game for more than just themselves. Also, that we play the game of failure so we can’t give up when something knocks us down. Something I really stood by this year that anyone can take from is pressure is a privilege. I teach these girls that pressure means something good is coming along.

What are some of your favorite classes your senior year and what was the most interesting thing you learned?

Some of my favorite classes I took my senior year are Management and Accounting. Being at John Marshall I was provided classes I could take to find out what I wanted to do with my life. Over the course of four years, I discovered my love for business. These classes taught me that there is more to a business than what you see every day.

What is Paws for a Cause and what responsibilities do you have with it?
Each year during school an organization gets together for this event. Each student is presented a certain amount of money and a list of what their person needs and is expected to provide them with it. The responsibilities we have are making sure we provide these people with something they need. Making sure we can make someone’s day is extremely important to us.

What led you to help with Food for Funnel and how did you help?
What led me to get involved with Food for Funnel is to be involved in my community. Being able to help someone in need of food while participating with my friends is extremely important. Being a part of this event has showed me the kind of love people have for our community. Packing 15,000 bags for whoever needs it is inspiring.

What is Night to Shine and what did you love most about working with them?
Nigh to Shine was created by the Tim Tebow Foundation to host an event for special needs. This event is a prom that anyone with a living disability can participate in. Night to Shine is a celebration of God’s love for you and being able to crown each guest a king or queen. I enjoyed being able to experience the pure happiness each guest had.

What did you do during Community Field Day?
During community field day some older girls from our high school go to a local softball field and help run this event. During this event every team in this organization competes against each other in different skills competitions. We can help kids one on one throughout the day. While I was there, I oversaw the homerun derby which kids hit the ball and scored a point wherever it landed.

Picture
Photography by AH Photography - April Hagedorn

What leadership roles have you had volunteering?
While volunteering I have been able to help out kids during community field day. I led and instructed them on the different tasks that they participated in.

What is your best leadership quality?
I feel like my best leadership quality is being able to help people get to their goal. I like to motivate people on the field and in everyday situations, so they can succeed.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day I would honestly just relax. I hardly get days off with softball, so being able to recover and get healthy is extremely important. In my free time I love watching college softball so if it was on that day that’s what I would be doing.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
In the summer I will be traveling for softball with some of my best friends. As I am starting college in the fall, I want to be able to enjoy my summer and make memories. Making sure I am prepared for what is up next for me is important. As I start the next chapter of my life playing at the next level I want to be prepared.

Who do you find inspiring?
Someone I find inspiring is my pitching coach, Cory Huminsky (Berliner). Cory was diagnosed carcinoid cancer at age 11 and fought through it and ended up playing Division 1 softball at the University of Pittsburgh. I cannot thank her enough for her guidance and everything she has done to help me sharpen my pitching skills.

Tell us about your love for academics. What do you love about learning?
I love learning all types of new things like history and science. I like forgiving the world out and how things work. Learning new information helps me understand the world more and having new information is super cool.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned this year?
The coolest things I’ve learned this year in my academic classes would have to be in History. We had learned all of the region of India and all of its cool past as well as the cultures and surrounding countries too.

When did you start playing basketball and where are you at with it now?
I started playing basketball the start of 7th grade. I started with a fall ball league in New Britain and now I’ve grown so much. I now play AAU basketball with that same team, The Midstate Lady Raiders.

What is a favorite memory from basketball?
My favorite memories from basketball are always hotels and traveling with my team. We all have a great bond from spending all of that time together. We eat together, watch movies with each other and obviously play together too!

What do you love most about volleyball and what position do you play?
I’m a right side hitter in volleyball and although I just started I love the support in volleyball. No matter if you mess up or do something great the team comes together and reassured that mistakes happen and you’re doing great.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Every Christmas Eve since before my time, my mom’s side of the family spends Christmas eve together. We order pizza, open gifts and all bake sweet treats together. My mom has carried this tradition on from my Great grandmother Claire and I hope it never ends because it’s a beautiful thing our family does.

What leadership qualities are your best?
I feel like my best leadership qualities include communication, creativity, active listening, and most of all honesty. It’s important to me to be honest with people no matter what and listen to what others have to say as well.

How would your friends describe you?
My friends would describe me and a funny individual who’s kind and honest with you no matter the situation. They would tell you how caring I am and how I reliable I am as well.

Sabrina Bishop

Picture

Sabrina Bishop - Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by Amy Weathers Photography
Issue 68 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sabrina Bishop is probably the most outgoing and genuine senior I've had the opportunity to work with. Everyone she meets loves her which is why she is always voted on homecoming court and to serve as their class president, but it doesn't stop there. Sabrina graduated first in her class with a 4.56 Cumulative GPA, was awarded the LSU Flagship Scholarship, Teagle Foundation Merit & EFCU Financial Merit Scholarships. She managed this while still being an active part of her cheerleading and powerlifting teams as well as working part time at a local restaurant. She's inclusive and makes everyone proud!

What does it mean to you to be voted on the homecoming court every year?
To be voted on the homecoming court every year to me speaks to how I am perceived by my peers. It means a lot to me to know that the person who I am working to become is being noticed by those surrounding me and encourages me to continue to strive to become the best version of myself that I could possibly be.

What are your roles and responsibilities as class president?
As class president, I am the sole voice of the Class of 2023 at Denham Springs High School. My role includes providing a consensus to represent all of my classmates and my responsibilities include organizing any class activities. I was also the main line of communication between the student body and the administration.

What are you most proud of achieving in your senior year?
In my senior year, I am most proud of my 4.5625 Cumulative GPA. This is not because of a number used to compare against others, or because it is a quantitative measure of accomplishment. It is for me however,  a non-disputable representation of my hard work. Over the past four years, I have spent countless hours studying and learning. I have sacrificed time with family and friends, working, sleeping, even doing things I love, all for my school work. I am proud of this simple number because it helps me recognize that all of it was worth the struggle.

Why is having such a high GPA important to you?
A high GPA is so important to me for a couple of reasons. For one, I think it is very important to put my best foot forward in my classes and give my best ability, I always strive for A's and therefore a high GPA represents my hard work. I also feel that a high GPA represents my character. Since AP classes give the extra quality point that excels a GPA, I believe it shows that I am one to push my self and not take the easy road. I look towards the future by having the ability to gain college credit and exposure to difficult material.

Picture
Photography by Amy Weathers Photography

What was your favorite class this year, and what was the most interesting thing you learned?
My favorite class this year was AP English Literature. While I usually tend to lean towards math and science classes, this year I was able to see English in a different light. The most interesting thing I learned was about the composition of a plot and how an author can analyze minute details and influence meaning onto them.

Tell us about the LSU Flagship Scholarship, the Teagle Foundation Merit Scholarship, and the EFCU Financial Merit Scholarship and what you needed to do to receive them.
In order to receive the LSU Flagship Scholarship I needed to have a 3.5 accumulative GPA in high school. For the Teagle Foundation Merit Scholarship, I applied with all of my extracurriculars, GPA, AP scores, ACT scores, and any leadership positions I have held. The EFCU Merit Scholarship was based on my GPA, ACT, community service involvement, and an essay answering the prompt of "If you had $1,000 to donate to any local organization which one would it be and why?".

What have you learned about yourself while applying for/receiving such honors?
Something I have learned about myself while applying for and receiving such honors would be that I am capable of much more than I thought I might have previously believed myself to be. I have pushed myself to a lot of limits and have found that even though I might not have met every goal, I have learned how to celebrate my victories and learn from my shortcomings.

Picture
Photography by Amy Weathers Photography

Tell us about your cheer career.
I did dance and gymnastics throughout  elementary school. Moving into junior high, I wanted to be a part of a school team. Sixth grade I made the cheer team and a year and a half later, my friends asked me to fill in on a competition team,  so I tried out and made that. I continued to do school and competition cheer up until my junior year of High School. After my junior year, I decided not to try out for my Senior year. I became unhappy with the sport and decided to pursue powerlifting, loved every minute and couldn’t have been happier.

What did you love best about being on the cheer team?
What I loved most about being on the cheer team was the bond between a small group of girls you could form. A collective movement towards a common goal, and knowing that everyone there wants it just as much as you. Spending 6 days a week and countless hours together, with blood, sweat, and tears for it all to come together in the end.

What is your favorite part about being on the powerlifting team?
My favorite part about being on the powerlifting team is how accepting, uplifting, and encouraging an environment the team is. As well as, being surrounded and forming bonds with people you never would have thought you would be. Learning more about the people at your school from all different backgrounds and interests with one common thread, powerlifting.

What do you do at your local restaurant for work, and what have you learned about the general public as a result?
At the local restaurant, I have worked as a hostess, bar back, and now training as a server. One thing I have learned about the general public from working in the service industry for over 2 years is that you should always be kind to people regardless of their treatment towards you. I have come across many walks of life. I have seen customers come in that might be dealing with personal issues that will come off as rude at first but end up being extremely kind. Situations like this just go to show that you never really know what someone is going through.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My knowledge of the value of hard work. I have a family of six, and we are big on a do-it-yourself lifestyle. For example, our parents said if we wanted a pool we had to help, which is exactly what we did. We built our pool ourselves from start to finish. After countless late nights and literal blood, sweat, and tears, our pool was finished. This long journey made me truly appreciate the labor and hard work that goes into luxuries. It makes me think twice before asking for things because I understand that luxuries need to be earned.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One thing inspiring about me that my interview does not cover is my work ethic, dedication, and passion. Many of my peers and teammates used these words to describe my character and that is such an honor. Throughout my life, I’ve had to continuously work to achieve my goals because I was taught at a young age that success won’t be handed to you. One of the most valuable life skills I’ve learned is how to overcome obstacles with a positive mindset and keep pushing through life’s most difficult challenges. I feel that my drive and ethic truly define my character and sum up my personality.

What else would you like to talk about?
One thing I would love to talk about is the importance of mindset. If it weren’t for a strong support system and a deeply rooted faith, I wouldn’t have had the strength to overcome some of the challenges life has thrown at me. It is no secret that high school can be one of the most difficult times in a student’s life. The pressure to maintain exemplary grades, strong friendships, and a healthy lifestyle may be overwhelming to a teen, but with God and family those worries can be put to ease. It is only with faith and trust that can elevate your mindset and help you achieve happiness throughout difficult moments.

Picture
I have been a member of the Livingston Parish Talented Arts Program for the past 10 years. This is an image of my first place, acrylic painting. The piece is titled “Elegance.”

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?

If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers, I would discuss the impact social media has on teenagers. This topic is so in depth and has varying effects, which can either help or hurt a person’s mental health. I would love to be able to share how to positively use social media to better one’s life!

Why do you love having your dad for your photographer?
I love having my dad as my photographer because I get to watch his dedication and hard work pay off. He has grown so much as a photographer and I’m so proud of him for pushing himself to perfect his passion!

When I was younger I did not take that many dance classes. Now I take eleven classes a week. I have gotten so much stronger since I have started troupe.
I love that dance can let you feel free and express however I am feeling. I love my friends there as they are the most best friends I’ve ever.
My favorite accomplishment from dance is finally learning how to do a second position turn and learning how to do them correctly. And I am hoping that soon I make the senior troupe.
I wish others knew that it’s like a full time job. It takes so much time of my week I don’t have time to do much else. I’m there almost everyday all night. It’s a lot harder than it looks and is a big commitment. I have been cheering for almost 7 years and I love supporting my school. Especially in football season. I love flying and that’s my favorite. I chose April because I love the locations she chooses they are all so unique and are specific to a certain person and the outfit. I loved being in the flower shop because I love flowers and I thought it looked great with my pink dress. It was very chaotic though trying to change very quickly in the car from one place to another. I just signed up to help out with an elementary schools field day on the last day of school and I’m really excited and looking forward to that. I have always loved to bake. My sister inspired me to start my own business as she has her own small bakery business and I thought her cookies looked really good. I love baking the s’mores cookies or salted caramel cheesecake cookies. The one that gets ordered the most is probably Forster sugar cookies or s’mores cookies. I have learned how quickly somethings take vs what the recipe says. I have also gained more technique to frosting cookies without it running all together and off the edge. My family is really outgoing. My mom is really loud and my dad is really quiet. And then there’s me who is both. I’m loud with my friends and quiet around people I don’t know. And I always feel to be loud and laugh at the wrong time. I hope that every year we go on a vacation together. I love travelling especially to Chicago and Florida. Those are my two favorite places and I love shopping with my mom.

Maggie Leighton

Picture

Maggie Leighton – Massachusetts
Nomination by Connor Leighton
Photography by Portraits by Frank
Issue 67 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Maggie Leighton is my big sister and inspires me, and everyone around her, to work hard, try new things and always be kind. She excels at school, earning a 4.0 and being invited into the NHS sophomore year. Maggie is always on the move, playing volleyball and tennis for school, studying piano, voice and organ, taking dance lessons and modeling. She has a part-time job and finds time each week for charity, working with our Mayor’s Youth Council in the community and making meals for those in need with Lasagna Love. In your magazine, Maggie can inspire even more people.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am so excited that my brother nominated me! I want to be a good role model at home but I am definitely not perfect! Lately I’ve been really trying to inspire my family and friends to try new things. This past year I entered my first pageant, got a job and tried out for my school’s tennis team (even though I’d never even held a racket!). It can be scary to try something new, especially if you don’t know if you’ll like it or be any good at it. But you'll never know if you don’t try!

What else would you like to talk about?
I love talking about the pageant I was in this year. I’d never been in a pageant before but saw the casting call advertisement and it looked like fun, so I convinced my mom to take me. I had four months to get ready and learned so much about how to present on stage, answer interview questions, pick out wardrobe and manage my time. In the end I placed in the top five and am so happy I took the opportunity to try something new to me!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would want to talk about why music education is so important in schools. I’m part of my school’s chorus and show choir and used to play saxophone in our school band. I am also one of two students on a committee presenting for a grant to fund our music program. The community and creativity found in the music department is a positive experience that helps shape students’ lives both in school and outside school. It is important that music education be accessible to each student no matter their situation.

Julian Vidaurrazaga

5/6/2023

Picture

Julian Vidaurrazaga – California
Nomination by Yessica Martinez
Photography by Robin Lorraine Photography
Issue 67 of Inspiring Teens magazine

Nomination: Julian Vidaurrazaga was born from immigrant parents who taught him that dreams are achievable through hard work. He was first inspired to be a Latino actor at age 5 when he saw his first Spider-Man movie. He wanted to be a superhero so he could save the day. He pursued his acting career until age 11, facing challenges in the industry but continued hard to make his dreams a reality. You can now see him in many Films/TV Shows like Dhar Mann, Mani, Reasonable Doubt, Murder In The Heartland, Mystery Box, Americas Family & many more.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I developed my acting by taking time to analyze peoples behavior within movies and outside of them as well. I self taught myself a variety of skills such as playing the guitar and further improving my Spanish speaking skills to help benefit me in booking roles. Therefore placing me closer to my dream of impacting the audience with my acting skills.

What else would you like to talk about?
There were multiple times where I felt like my career was frozen, which devastated me allowing the feeling of rejection to flood in. Luckily my parents inspired me to keep going as they also felt the touch of rejection from being immigrants themselves but overcame it. Now with a reinforced mindset I continued to work hard towards my goal, to impact and inspire a huge audience.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers I would present a hobby I'm really passionate about, gaming. The reason being on why I could talk about this with my peers is because gaming has been a part of my life ever since I was a kid. This hobby allows me to use my imagination more openly and even helped me with my acting when a role required for me to play it with more range.

Delaney Grant

5/6/2023

Picture

Delaney Grant – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Memories by Tawnya Photography
Issue 67 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Delaney is an inspiring Sophomore at Fairview High School. She is active on the cheerleading squad, student council, school newspaper, yearbook, and the musical. Delaney enjoys hanging out with friends, she loves old movies, music, and reading. Most of all she loves cooking with her mom.
While photographing her I learned of her passion for fashion. She aspires to study Fashion Merchandising. Delaney joined the Teen Model program for Memories by Tawnya Photography. This is a great way for her to get a glimpse of the fashion industry by putting her in the spotlight and letting her personality shine through.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I aspire every day to simply just be kind. Being a teenager today is tough, especially with social media so prominent. Plato once said, "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." I believe that to be true. My hope is that I can help someone who is having a rough day with a kind word, a smile, or a simple acknowledgement. I want to be the reason that someone believes that there are good people in this world with the hopes they will be kind too.

What else would you like to talk about?
My love for fashion has inspired my future career. I would like to go into fashion merchandising when I go off to college. I find fashion to be my artistic outlet. I love to put things together and mix and match. One of my favorite things to do is thrifting because I can bring something that was once old and make it new again.

If you were to present a topic to a group of peers, what would it be and why?
My faith is a very important part of my identity. At one of the toughest times in my life I was struggling mentally. Nothing seem to matter, constantly angry, and had a hard time finding joy in the things I used to. One night, I went to the Lord, and prayed. I laid all the built-up anger, sadness, and other emotions that left me feeling empty at his feet and freed me. Never have I felt better than I do now. The good Lord saved me from reaching rock bottom and without him I wouldn't be where I am today.

How did you find your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found Memories by Tawnya through a Facebook add to join a teen model boot camp. I had never done anything like that before and I am so glad I did. I had an amazing time. I made friends with a bunch of cool girls, learned about modeling and posing, had fun with fashion and learned to become more comfortable in front of a camera. Tawnya is the best! She made the experience memorable. The best part for me was making new friendships!

What is your favorite class this year and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?

My favorite class this year is Psychology. The most interesting thing we’ve learned about so far is mental disorders like schizophrenia.

What honors class are you most interested in and why?
I think the one I am most interested in is Chemistry. I like science and I have learned a lot in Chemistry this year. Science classes, in general, are my favorite.

Tell us about your wrestling career.
I started wrestling in 6th grade and wrestled for my middle school team. I took the next 3 years off and started wrestling again in 10th grade. I still have so much to learn. Even though it is a grappling sport like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, they are not the same sport.

What is your favorite accomplishment from wrestling?
I think my favorite accomplishment so far in wrestling was representing my team at a JV tournament and winning my first match of the day.

How did you get started volunteering with special needs kids to play baseball?
My older sister has Autism and was unable to participate in sports with her peers. My parents found this amazing organization, RallyCap Sports of Central New Jersey, and signed her up for baseball and she loved it. She has played multiple sports through RallyCap including football, soccer, beach volleyball, baseball, basketball, and tennis. I started volunteering to assist with baseball a couple years ago, first as a bat boy and later coordinating batting order and keeping the benches moving.

What distances are your favorite to run and why?

I like to run shorter distances, typically 5K or 10K.

Tell us about a memorable competition you traveled to.
In 2019, I traveled to Long Beach, California with 5 other athletes from my Jiu Jitsu school and 2 coaches to compete at the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) PAN Kids competition, and that was a lot of fun. While I didn’t win a medal, I still had an amazing time bonding with my coaches and team. I’ve competed in multiple states, including NJ, PA, FL, CA, NY and NV.

What else would you most like to talk about?
I would like to talk about traveling and the places that I have visited as well as the places I would like to visit in the future.
Where is your favorite place you've traveled to and why?
So far, my favorite place that I’ve visited is Italy. We went to Rome, Naples, Florence, Messina and Taormina. There is such a rich history in Italy, and each city was so beautiful. I would love to go back someday.

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Whitten - Harmony Photography for your photographer?
My family and I were on a cruise last year, and so was Angie. She was looking for people to photograph in exotic locations and I agreed to let her take my pictures – we decided to do the shots in Valletta, Malta. I am so glad I trusted my instincts and said yes.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Shooting with Angie was amazing. She had some great ideas for where we would shoot, and we were done in no time. Angie and I have a similar sense of humor and we were laughing hysterically a couple times during the shoot. I would definitely work with her again.

Picture

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would most likely talk about wrestling because it is a sport that I love that I recently came back to after 2 years away. People who are great wrestlers not only have good technical skills and strength, they are also able to use strategy to plan out what skills they plan to use during the match. While most people think of it as an individual sport, it is also a team sport because each wrestler’s individual match results contribute to the team score. The friendships that I have made through wrestling and like no other friendships that I have.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I organized an online food drive in 2020 for people in my community who were not able to feed their families and donated close to 2 tons of food. A link to an Amazon wish list for food items was added to my social media profiles and I raised awareness via Instagram. Food from my wish list came from all over the United States and Canada.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
One of two places: 1) in bed, watching videos or gaming; or 2) relaxing by a pool and getting some sun.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Making it through wrestling season without quitting!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t give up. Set your goal and keep working toward it, a little bit every day.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I will be in college, hopefully at University of Florida.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Hanging out with my friends.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel the world
Get a job with a stable income
Own lots of cats

McKenzie Scherzinger

Picture

McKenzie Scherzinger – Tennessee
Nomination & Photography by Mark H Herron Photoartistry
Issue 67 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: McKenzie is the perfect example of inspiration, focus, and determination. A beautiful kid that is grounded in her goals and values. She's the humble girl that all the kids watch rodeo and want to be like.
Picture
Photography by Mark H Herron Photoartistry

How did you get started in rodeo and where are you at with it now?
I was on a horse before I would walk. I started rodeoing on a little paint pony called Oreo. He was a mean pony, but he taught me a lot. Now I’m competing in the National High School Rodeo Association, the National Little Britches Rodeo Association, the occasional jackpots, and I’ve started getting my feet wet in pro rodeo this past summer.

What do you love most about the sport?
The thing I love most about the sport of rodeo is the bond I have with my equine athletes. They take care of me every time we are going into the arena, I take care of them out of the arena. In my opinion, the long hours I spend every day caring for my horses and learning all their habits plays a large role in the reason I am where I am with them today.

What events are you involved in with rodeo?
I’m involved in multiple rodeo events. I compete in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping, ribbon roping, trail course, and even some bull riding. I’m so grateful to have a team of horses and a great support system that allow me to do all the events I love.

What is your favorite memory from rodeo?
My favorite rodeo memory would be when I ran my first 19 second pole bending run. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little girl and reaching that goal on a horse i finished training was so rewarding.

What is your best accomplishment from the sport?
My best accomplishment was my rodeo 2022 rodeo season. I reached so many goals and learned so many lessons. I was blessed to win three trophy saddles and nine gold buckles throughout the year. Yes, the buckles are amazing, but the real accomplishments were making new friends and gaining a rodeo family that has impacted my life in so many positive ways.

How did you find and why did you choose Mark H Herron Photoartistry for your photographer?
Mark H Herron is a photographer for many of the rodeos I compete at. I have always admired his work in and out of the arena. I knew he could do an outstanding photo shoot!!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Mark was absolutely amazing! He is so patient to make sure every detail of every picture is right. I love the sense of humor Mark has. He always keeps me laughing and never lets a shoot get boring!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love teaching the kids coming up behind me, while also supporting all of my fellow competitors.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would be happy to tell you about my future career plans to become a flight nurse out west, while still pursuing my goals on the rodeo road.

What inspired you to become a flight nurse?
A good friend of mine that I used to barrel race with was an EMT. She talked all about it and I knew I wanted to do something in the emergency medical field. In 2020 I got into a bull riding accident. I had multiple life threatening injuries and was life flighted. With all the craziness going on, I took it all in and knew this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

What are your plans as a flight nurse?
My plans as a flight nurse are to give others the same second chance that I was given when I needed help. I will have to complete two years of nursing school for my associates degree in nursing followed by two years of online classes for my bachelors. I must have at least 3 years of experience in a hospital before applying to become a flight nurse, so I plan to be a travel nurse while chasing rodeo dreams.

What are your future goals in rodeo?
Shooting for the moon has always been my thing. I want to college rodeo and qualify for the College National Finals and also travel to pro rodeos and one day qualify for the International Finals Rodeo. With grit, determination, and a lot of hard work I’ll do whatever it take to get there!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Rodeo is my passion, it takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication but is so rewarding in the end.

Picture
Photography by Mark H Herron Photoartistry

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?

You would find me giving lessons to the next rodeo up and comers. Helping kids to reach their goals and dreams is so heartwarming and a way I can give back to my rodeo community. You may also find me training young horses. Working with young horses is one of the most humbling things a person can do. One day you could make the best barrel racing run and the next day that same horse will try to buck you off. It just shows how truly blessed I am to not only have young horses, but to have finished ones who do their job every time.

What's up next for you that you are most excited about?
My next big move will be out west on my own. I’m so excited to live out in the warm flat lands on a ranch. It will take a few years of getting through college, working, and saving money. In the end it will be completely worth it and will all pay off.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve accomplish is getting where I am today. It’s taken so many early mornings and late night, but I wouldn’t change a thing!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Dream big, start with what you, have where you’re at! Never settle for less and never let anyone talk you out of your dreams!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I plan to have my own small ranch in south Texas. I also plan to be working as a flight nurse and chasing my rodeo dreams when I’m not working as a nurse.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
One of my favorite things to do that isn’t rodeo is hanging out with my friends! They play such are my support system when it come to this thing called life, and I can’t thank them enough for everything they do.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things that are on my bucket list are riding down the Grand Canyon, going to watch the NFR, and to one day compete at the Pendleton Round Up.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Haley Kinsel one of the most inspirational women in pro rodeo. She is so positive and so grateful for everything she has been given.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I inspire other because I never let setbacks keep me down. I have very strong faith in God, and I leave everything in his hands.

Tell us about your golf career.

My freshman year of high school one of my friends asked me to join the golf team. I had never played golf in my life, but the coach said he was willing to teach me how to golf. I just recently finished my third year of golf for Galt High School. Over the years I have improved a lot and was one point away from All League this year. I plan to play my senior year with the goal of making All League.

What is your team like and what do you love most about it?
My teammates and coach are all awesome. We are more like a family than a team. We support each other on the course, academically, and emotionally. I love how all of us joke around and have fun, no matter the outcome of the match.

What position do you play in soccer?
In soccer, I play left or right midfielder and sometimes defender.

What is a favorite memory from soccer?
My favorite memory was from my freshman year. Due to Covid the soccer season was in the spring, and I played both Jv and Varsity that season. One game, we played the cross-town rival. Since our town is really small, I had played soccer with most of the other girls since I was six. My team didn't stand a chance and the coaches and refs let us just have fun. Part of the game I even was skipping and holding hands with my friend from the other team, while all the moms in the stands were busting up laughing.

What are your favorite distances to run in track?

My favorite distances in track are the 400-meter, 200- meter, and 100-meter races.

What is a favorite accomplishment from track?
My sophomore year of track was my first year participating in track. During league finals, my coach asked me to run the 400-meter race for the first time ever. I ended up finishing first in the race and ranking first in the league for the event. In addition, I finished second for the 200-meter event and third in the 100-meter event.

What are your roles and responsibilities as a captain for all three of these sports?
Some of my roles and responsibilities as a captain are to help facilitate drills, practices, and fundraising. I am also responsible for helping to keep up team morale, while being a positive role model at my school. In track, I also coach the newer teammates for sprinting events.

What do you love about being on the competitive floral team?
I love being creative with designs and spending time with my floral team. I love learning about flowers and how creating floral designs brings happiness to others.

What is your favorite subject in school, and what is the most fascinating thing you've learned so far this year?
My favorite subject in school is Power Mechanics. This class teaches me how to fix and repair small engines. At this school I have completely taken apart an engine and put it back together successfully. I have been able to integrate my skills from the class at home by changing my own oil and replacing my brakes on my car.

What do you do while volunteering in your mom's classroom?
I volunteer at mom's school to help teachers get ready over the summer and tutor students during breaks.

What have you learned about running a business with your grandpa?
While helping my grandpa at his business, I have learned the family history of the Champion Juicer that my great great grandfather invented. I have learned how to do monthly accounting, keep detailed records, maintain our website, process orders, and ship out completed orders.

What do you love most about having your mom as your photographer?

My mom is a goofball and always makes me laugh/smile. She knows how to use nature in beautiful settings.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom is really patient and helps me pose in natural ways that are flattering. Since she is always happy and loves to take pictures, it makes the experience very fun and laid back.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
For the past 7 years, I have organized an "Adopt a Grandparent" community service project where I collect sponsorships to provide Christmas presents for all of the residents of our local convalescent home. We take about 90 wrapped gifts for the residents in memory of my Uncle Kevin. I also fill-in at my church when ushers are needed.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I believe in staying positive and having a growth mindset. I would share with my peers how to set and modify goals, while helping them to understand that making mistakes is part of how we learn and grow.

Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Larissa has tremendously changed my life and all of those around her. She has a way of making individuals better people by teaching patience, showing them strength, and motivating each of them to improve themselves in the simplest of ways. From the moment Larissa was born she has shown the world how to be kind and how to love, but not allow others to take her kindness as a weakness. When problems have arrived for Larissa no matter how daunting they may have seemed, she showed others just how determined and persistent one needs to be to overcome anything.

What do you love most about being a senior this year?
My senior year of high school has been amazing, I love the feelings and activities that have come along with it. I feel as if I have finally made it to the place where the younger classmen are now looking up to me. I like the fact that the teachers treat us like young adults and prepare us for what is to come. As my final days of attending high school are approaching quickly, the friendships are growing tighter, and the memories are becoming unforgettable.

What will you miss most about high school?
I have been going to school with the same group of kids since kindergarten. This is something not everyone gets to experience but I am extremely grateful for in my small town. There are a lot of positives and negatives to knowing most people on such a personal level. I am going to miss the daily routine and the oh so familiar faces. I am also going to miss all the teachers who have gotten me to the place in life I am in today.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I am going to be attending is West Coast Ultrasound Institute in San Marcos Ca. I will graduate in three years with my bachelor’s degree in Sonography. After I obtain my degree I want to immediately jump into the workforce. I plan to work in a large hospital and hope to help mothers’ dreams come true by finding out all the details of their unborn children, or helping others by finding sources of medical issues. I can see myself being highly successful as well as independent as I continue to grow and learn in the medical field.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind younger teens?
The legacy that I hope to leave behind to younger teens would be importance of always be true to yourself. Never let anyone else define you or change your spark. God made each of us differently for a reason, and trying to not let others words or actions bring you down. Finding yourself worth is hands down the most important thing for a young lady. Building confidence within yourself is not an easy task but if you take it one step at a time the results you see will make the tough days well worth it.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
It would be a rare occurrence if I had nothing to do all day, but if it happened you would find me out hunting, fishing, or soaking up the sun. I live in one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. Deep inside the Eastern Sierra’s is my hometown of Bishop California. It is here that I not only learned to catch trout, but to shoot a gun, and how to enjoy the outdoors. Lately a favorite pastime has been hitting the golf course with friends and attempting to play the game of golf.

What are your responsibilities as captain? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
While playing high school sports I was given the opportunity to be the captain. I loved being in a position where I was a positive role model for the other girls to look up to. While being a part of the team this year I felt very comfortable with my teammates, they became sisters to me. We shared the good and tough times together, and this made me feel like I belonged. I stood out this year because of my attitude. I gave it my all every opportunity I had and really wanted to leave everything I had on that court.

What is your favorite memory with your volleyball team?
Before every volleyball season we always start the season off with a team bonding experience. This is where the entire team sleeps over in the gym together. We get the opportunity to share team goals and set challenges to reach throughout the season. While we spend the whole night together as a team, we build trustful relationships with one another that we later bring onto the court. I will never forget the loud music we blasted all night, the endless amount of junk food we consumed, or the never-ending hilarious stories shared between us.

How did you find and why did you choose Brandy Gardea Photography for your photographer?
The good Lord has truly blessed my family with having Brandy as a close family friend for quite some time. Over the last few years, we have witnessed her become an exceptionally talented photographer. Brandy takes the time to get to know you, pin points your personality, and does an amazing job of expressing you in her photos. Brandy has a tremendously talented eye for the small details, and a true gift for boosting confidence and capturing the perfect moments. I guarantee one photo shoot with Brady and you will have memories that will last a lifetime and a new friend for life.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Taking photos with Brandy is amazing. My family and I have had quite a few photos shoots with her all over our home town. She encourages you to dress anyway you want and have a wonderful time just being yourself. Brandy has allowed me to help find the perfect spots to capture each of my photos. She loves to try out different poses and a variation of faces. The part that I loved most about this experience was having the opportunity to fully express myself. I genuinely had a wonderful time and loved working with such an amazing photographer.

What else would you like to talk about?
I consider myself to be a confident young lady, however this has not always been the case. During my younger teen years, I struggled tremendously not only with self-esteem but also with my appearance. When dealing with teen acne it is not only physically painful, but it is draining to your worth. After excepting and growing, you will eventually learn that beauty comes from the inside and acne can't define you. When encountering someone who may be struggling with self-esteem, I share my story in hopes to encourage them.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
During the last year I have personally lost a very close friend of mine due to a drunk driving accident. This incident hits close to my heart as I have grown up with alcohol affecting family members. After losing a friend I feel it is my job to be an advocate against drinking and driving. I hate the idea of people’s lives being taken away due to a bad decision. This is why I have taken it upon myself to be a part of a program that gives students real life loss, grieving, and ultimate consequences of drunk driving.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Throughout my teen years I have been elected to positions of leadership that not only evaluated my patience but gave me the opportunity to help and encourage others. I earned the title of captain for both the drill team as well as my volleyball team. Both roles gave me the chance to learn to listen to others, as well as gain the ability to strengthen a team. While playing sports that I am enthusiastic about, I gained leadership skills that I will carry with me throughout life.

Chloe Cooley

Chloe Cooley - Louisiana
Nomination by Candice Cooley
Photography by Stephanie Roy Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Chloe Cooley is an inspiring teen in so many ways. Her work ethic, determination, and loving personality are just a few of the characteristics that make her a candidate for Inspiring Teens. Not only is Chloe involved in many clubs and sports at her high school, but she is also very involved in her community and church parish. She makes an impact on everyone she meets and shines bright in all that she does. Her smile is infectious and contagious. You would not regret considering Chloe Cooley for Inspiring Teens 2023.
Photography by Stephanie Roy Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Hearing loss can be a challenging obstacle to overcome. As someone who has experienced it firsthand, I understand the difficulties it presents. In school, I had to come up with unique ideas to accommodate my hearing loss. It required extra effort, but I refused to let it hold me back. In sports, my hearing loss made things more difficult, but I didn't give up. Instead, I found ways to adapt. It wasn't always easy, but my perseverance paid off. Now, I hope to inspire others facing similar challenges to keep pushing forward. With determination and hard work, anything is possible.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to speak about the profound impact the women in my life have had on me. My mother is my lighthouse and guides me through the chaos of life. My nanny is my biggest supporter and pushed me to strive for greatness and be the best version of myself. My grandmother has been a constant source of hope and love that I can always turn to. Their unwavering support has helped shape me into the woman that I am today, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If given the opportunity, I would highlight the importance of self love. Too often, young women are subjected to the belief that society sets the standards for their beauty and that the only way they are able to achieve love is by meeting those standards. Flaws are what define our individual beauty. Young women should instead be taught to embrace their uniqueness and shine beyond what society says they are allowed to accomplish. Women are so powerful and I believe that if we come together to lift each other up then so much more can be accomplished in the name of woman-kind.

Which of your core values is most important to you and why?

I would say that my core value that is most important to me is being genuine. Not only do you get to be your true self when you’re genuine, but because of this other people feel like they can be their true selves around you. Being genuine is a great way to help other people feel like they can be themselves and encourage positive relationships.

Why is your education important to you?
I look at education as a way to better yourself, your mind, and your opportunities in life, which is why I think it’s so important. Learning gives a person the opportunity to expand their ideas and perspective, which equips them to come in contact with other people. When this contact with others is used for good, it allows people to help each other and provides us with a more connected and engaging life.

What subject is your favorite in your senior year and why?
So far this year, my favorite subject has been AP English. I think some of the reason why I like it is because I didn’t take an english during the school year last year, so I was excited to be able to learn about the subject face-to-face and catch up on what I’ve missed, but I think the other reason why I like it so much is because I see it as an opportunity for growth. Going into this year without taking an English class my previous year was intimidating for me, so it pushed me to work harder than I normally would. This paid off, and because I ended up enjoying the actual subject matter on top of the extra work put in, the work in the class felt rewarding. As well as this, my teacher this year for AP English was great and I really liked the way she taught the class.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned so far this year?
The most interesting thing I’ve learned this year has been something called the Domino Effect. This theory has been a thing for a long time and I’ve always kind of known about it, but I’ve never consciously believed that it happens until recently. Basically the Domino Effect describes how each of your individual actions, no matter how small they may seem at the time, can build into larger events or circumstances that shape your life, kind of like knocking over a domino then more dominos falling because of it. It’s so cool to think that something I do right now can drastically change the course of my life, and learning about the reality of this effect has caused me to be more intentional with my actions and think about how I can tip a domino in the ‘positive’ direction.

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Read Photography for your photographer?
I found Angie Read through Instagram. A couple of the girls I followed had her as their senior photographer last year, so one day I went to her account and looked at all of her photos (and absolutely loved them!). I went straight to her website after that and saw all of the activities and photo sessions she had planned for her senior reps, and immediately knew that it was something I wanted to do.

What was your first photo experience like with her?
My first photo experience with Angie Read was taking birthday and senior rep announcement shots at her house in front of a backdrop she had set up. When I first arrived, she was so welcoming and nice, and she had all the girls play icebreakers to meet each other, which helped ease us into taking photos. Overall, it was great and got me excited for the rest of the year.

What did you love most about being on her senior team?
I love Mrs. Angie’s kindness and the positive attitude she brings to every shoot. She’s such a light to not only her reps but everyone she works with, which makes the shoots enjoyable and less stressful. As well as this, the community that has been built through shared photo shoots, group hangouts, and senior rep volunteer projects has been so fun to be a part of. All of the girls are so nice and it’s been wonderful experiencing part of my senior year with them.

Tell us about your school and what you'll miss most about it.
I go to Klein Collins High School (Go Tigers) where I’ve been at for four years now. My school is a part of the Klein district and has been a great place to spend my time and grow throughout my last four years as not only a student but a person. I’ll probably miss the sense of community and the memories that have been made there the most. The communities that I’ve been able to be a part of because of Klein Collins have shaped me into the person I am today and have allowed me to grow with people I care for and look up to. Being in such close proximity to these communities has made bonds that will hopefully last for years to come. As well as this, I’ve made so many fond memories with my friends and classmates that I will cherish forever.

Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I’ve found that I typically fit in with people who have the same values that I do, or that carry the same interests as me. I would say I stand out in the leadership positions I hold in a few of my extracurricular activities, which is mostly because of their leadership demands.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some things about me that aren’t included in my nomination are my academic achievements, like graduating as an honors student and my perseverance through hard classes, my involvement in extracurricular activities such as my school’s yearbook as a staffer and editor, student council as a member and officer, and National Honors Society, and my involvement in my church as a camp counselor. As well as this, I’m a member of an organization that allows high school girls to volunteer with their moms outside of school called Legacy League, which I’ve been a part of all throughout high school!

What is your favorite memory from being on the yearbook team?
I would say my favorite memories from my years on Yearbook would be our distribution days. Every year we create a theme for the day when we hand out the completed yearbooks, which has been the best possible way to celebrate finishing the book as well as get it to the people who have bought it. The costumes and decorations make an otherwise small event for someone who’s picking up their yearbook more special, and give someone who’s celebrating the completion of the yearbook a chance to recognize their hard work.

What is your favorite accomplishment as a student council member and officer?
I’d say my favorite accomplishment as a Student Council officer would be making the football and winter dress up days. My position in Student Council this year is to spread school spirit by making dress up days, and successfully completing the dress up days that occurred about every week then every day for about a month felt like a huge accomplishment.

What was your favorite service project on the student council?
My favorite service project for Student Council was making veterans thank you cards. Getting to recognize people that, unless you were related, would be hard to seek out or find a way to thank personally, was nice to do.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

Tell us about your time as a camp counselor.
I was a camp counselor last summer at both my church and a summer camp organization! Being a counselor was an amazing experience, and I learned a lot about helping others and being a positive influence to others from the people I was surrounded by. Not only does counseling at a summer camp positively impact the campers, but you also grow as a person!

What has been your favorite part of being a member of Legacy League?
My favorite part about Legacy League has been serving alongside like-minded and kind people who want to make an impact on others. As well as this, getting to volunteer with my mom has given us the chance to grow our relationship.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would talk about how people's worldviews are strongly influenced by the type of books that they read as a child. I think it's so interesting that a perspective can be so shaped and expanded by literature, and that everyone who has gotten the opportunity to read as a child is affected by the books that they read.

What is your strongest leadership skill?
My strongest leadership skill is holding people accountable and getting the best out of them every day.

You could find me either at the gym, baseball field, basketball court or hanging with my friends and/or family.

How did you find and why did you choose Erinn Letts Photos for your photographer?

I love just hanging out with them. We color, do chalk, listen to music and watch sports games. I love being able to be their role model and being able to spend as much time with them as I do, I have learned a lot about life and how to treat others from them.

What do you wish more people knew about special needs people and/or interacting with them?
I wish people knew they can do the same things we can do, it’s just more challenging and takes more time. Also, that people would respect them as being people instead of making fun of them or ignoring them because they have disabilities. I have been lucky enough to be around the same group of friends playing sports that understand the challenges they go through every day and they make sure my aunt and uncles feel special every time they see them.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very passionate about sports, school, and life experiences. I am hardworking and always push through life's obstacles, never giving up. I try to set an example for others to follow. I also enjoy working with younger peers to help them with educational or sports challenges they face. I have a huge heart and find value in every person.

What else would you like to talk about?
Many people have assisted me in developing my skills over the years. Allowing me to go to good schools, participate in a variety of sports and other activities, while making lifelong friends. My aunt and uncles with special needs have helped me to see life differently and to become more determined and being more passionate in everything I do. Life is not always easy. I am convinced that hard work will help me to achieve my goals and tackle the challenges I face.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would speak about sports. From almost when I first started to walk, I have been involved in sports and I have met many people along the way, who have assisted me to get where I am now. They have all helped me to develop a complete knowledge for the sports I love. Whether it is a relative, teacher, coach, fellow player, they have all helped me in becoming the person that I am.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To never give up and never be satisfied with the outcomes other people expect from you. Also, trust the process.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?

I started playing piano when I was 8, so I have been playing for about 10 years, and I started playing my clarinet in band when I was 11, so I have been playing clarinet for 7 years! I fell in love with music so much that I am going to college with a major in Music Education so I can be a band director!

What is your favorite genre of music to play?
My favorite genre of music to play will forever be jazz/classical depending on what instrument I am playing. If I am playing my clarinet, jazz all the way!! If I am playing piano, classical is my favorite.

What is your go-to song when someone asks you to play?
When someone requests me to play something on piano, my go-to is the prologue from Beauty and the Beast! I was very proud of learning this piece, I taught it to myself during quarantine. If someone asks me to play my clarinet, I usually improvise something, so it is never the same thing.

If you could play in any band anywhere, which one would it be and why?
I ADORE movie music!! I have an entire playlist on spotify dedicated to my favorite soundtracks that is well over 30 hours long. So, if I could play in any band anywhere, I would probably say a band or orchestra somewhere that records soundtracks for movies! I would want to be part of such an important project!!!

What have you learned about yourself playing music?
When I think about the lessons that I have learned while playing music, the one that sticks out to me the most is that I have learned resilience! The thing about music is you are going to fail. It takes time to get something perfect so working hard and learning to try again when you fail is essential when learning something new!

What has been a favorite accomplishment in music?
My favorite accomplishment in music is probably playing at Disney World in marching band! That was something that we had to audition for and got to march in the parade in front of the castle in the Magic Kingdom!

Tell us about your church and what you love most about it?
Oh my goodness!! I love my church so so much. I go to Covenant of Peace in my hometown. Everyone there is so welcoming, loving and kind. My church is very involved with world missions, which I love very much! They are so loving towards others and want to give to others instead of giving to themselves. I have seen God do some incredible things there and move in ways I have never seen before!! They truly live their lives to glorify God and work his purpose, not their own!! It truly is such a spirit filled church, and we love it there!

What is your favorite thing to do at church?

My favorite thing to do there is probably to worship with my family and friends! Unity is very important in churches, and this church is very unified! We all worship together, and it is amazing to be able to worship with your friends and family. I truly have made some of the most impactful and amazing friends that will last a lifetime!

Why is God such a huge part of your life?
God is such a huge part of my life for a lot of reasons, but the biggest reason is because of everything he has done. I have seen God work in a lot of ways, from performing miracles to giving people happiness and joy they haven't felt in a long time. He provided a way for people to have a eternal life in heaven with him, and to me that is so amazing. How can someone just pass that up?

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’m a STICKLER on positivity!! I always want to make sure that people can feel open to talking to me and always want to make sure that I am there for people when they need me! And, ALWAYS sharing God’s love!

How did you find and why did you choose Lauren Day Photography for your photographer?
One of my friends had her do her senior pictures and I felt like they really captured her personality through the photos!! Her style of photography was exactly what I was looking for, and she was such an amazing and sweet person!! She is such a ray of sunshine! I am so glad that I picked her.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was amazing!! She had me laughing a lot during the shoot, and she was such a sweet person. I ADORED the spots that we picked for the shoots! They were so pretty!

What do you like taking pictures of most?
I personally enjoy taking pictures of people! I love capturing life and emotion through a lens. It is truly amazing! A picture really is worth a thousand words!

Tell us the story behind a favorite image you've taken. We'd love to see it!
My favorite photo that I have taken is probably a picture of one of my close friends Chloe! She is such an amazing person. The dress that you will see in the photo was actually a dress of mine that I gave to her for the shoot! We have been friends since we were little when her mom babysat my sister and I, and we have been friends ever since!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Bullying!!! I know it’s a topic that is already well discussed, but I feel like there are some things that are left unsaid, especially coming from someone who has been through it. I would definitely like to share the effects of it that not many people see!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
It's not huge, but honestly stepping out of my comfort zone in sports! I played volleyball, and that was huge for me. I used to be a very shy kid who didn't like being in front of people at all, so playing in front of others was a big deal for me. I went from not being able to get the ball over the net to becoming a server. I went from being an incredibly shy kid to becoming team captain!!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would probably say to work hard and stay positive. I have been through some pretty rough things in my life that I wouldn't want anyone to go through, but overall, they made me stronger and a better person. I would just say to keep your head up and let God take control!!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I will be out of college, so that is exciting! Hopefully I will have been on a missions trip or two, and have my degree and be teaching! I am very excited!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Graphic Design/ Working with youth and children!! I love doing graphic design, it is really fun to create new designs and share them. I also enjoy working with children and youth! They are amazing!!

3 Things on your bucket list
- I would love to travel!!
- Go on a missions trip
- Go see a live orchestra!

Who do you find inspiring?
I have a hard time picking just one person, so I have narrowed it down to three. My mom, one of my friends mom (I call her Mama Amy) and My pastors wife, Angel! They are all so incredibly strong women and they are such Godly, humble, and inspiring women! I hope that I can be as inspiring as they are to me someday!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
- I hope that people see my faith as something that is inspiring. I hope that people see the love of Jesus through me. and see how much strength he gives me!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would just say THANK YOU for the opportunity to be in this magazine! I hope that I have made a difference in others’ lives!

What would you like to talk about first?
I would like to touch on the topic of my school involvement. I have participated in three sports and four different clubs. Within those clubs I am president for one, Vice-President for two, and on the leadership team for the other. I encourage everyone to find their liking at school and involve themselves. I have learned numerous life lessons, that will stay with me throughout my life. I hope everyone has the opportunity to find their passion at school and chase it. Because without involving myself with sports and clubs, I wouldn’t be the same person I am today.

Let's start with your sports. What sports do you play and which is your favorite?
I played basketball for 2 years, football for 3, and track for 4. My favorite is track because in track I’m most comfortable, confident, and competitive. Track has always been my passion sport and I am blessed for the opportunity to continue my career in college.

What is a favorite memory from a sport you've played?
My favorite memory was my first track meet during my sophomore year. I was recovering from a major knee injury, but got the opportunity to throw my shot put in competition. At that meet I placed first, against a competitor that stood about a foot taller than me and twice the size as me. After that meet I had the realization that I was competitive in the sport I loved most, this then started my dream and passion to continue my athletic career in college. Thanks to that meet, I am now going to college for track and field.

What is a favorite accomplishment from a sport you've played?
My favorite accomplishment was in 8th grade in Track and Field, where I threw my shot put far enough for state qualifying. It was my favorite because of how small I was compared to all my competitors, and how much they counted me out really pushed me. I was proud of myself for achieving my goal I set, while going against other’s assumptions.

Moving on to clubs, tell us about the clubs you're in.

I am in Student Council, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), NHS (National Honors Society), CAMA. In each club I hold leadership positions and I hold many responsibilities. Each club focuses on leadership and community Service.

Which club are you president in and what are your roles and responsibilities in that position?
I am the president of my school’s Student Council. I have been the president for 3 years straight. Within this club I hold the responsibilities to run the meeting, perform 12 hours of community service, and teach members successful leadership qualities.

What clubs are  you vice president in? What have been your biggest impact in both?
I am the vice president of my school’s NHS and CAMA. For NHS, I would say that my biggest impact is the leadership qualities I have shown throughout my school. For CAMA, my biggest impact is the reach to get younger students to join this club and embrace the stop of drug and alcohol use.

What is the 4th club and what is something you are proud to have been a part of in that club?
My 4th club is FCA, in which I’m on the leadership team for. FCA is a club that shares the word of god through athletes at our school. I’m proudly a part of this club and our events throughout the year. I’m most proud of morning huddles we before school starts. At this we have a pastor speak a lesson to students willing to involve themselves. I have learned many valuable lessons here and think it’s a great way to spread the word of God.

What have you learned about yourself through all these leadership opportunities?
Thankfully for these clubs, I have learned that I thrive in leading others towards success. Which has given me my path for my future. After discovering how much I care to create a successful path for others, I decided that I want to become a teacher after college. I found this out thanks to my leadership opportunities within my high school

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is my ability to make sure people I am leading are following and not falling behind. My first year as president for Student Council I was told that what makes a strong leader is that leadership quality, which is why I have made sure to make it a point for me to succeed at it. It is important to not leave your members or followers in the dust, while you do it all the work.

What will you miss most about high school?

I will miss most the friendships I have created. I have gone to my school my entire life, and so have my friends. We have a created such an amazing bond and steering away from that chapter will be difficult to do. I will also miss my entire class in general. My graduating class has 32 kids and majority of us have been together since Kindergarten. Not seeing them daily will be strange, at the least.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would most likely find me in bed taking a nap! I never…never have time to just relax and enjoy, so I would take the opportunity to do so. Also, I would watch TikTok…because what teenager isn’t obsessed with that app!

What are you most looking forward to this summer/after high school?
This summer I have the opportunity to tutor students at my former high school. I’m excited for this chance because I get to learn how to teach children. I’m also excited to train and prepare myself for the chance to start my collegiate track and field career

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Lieb for your photographer?
Angie is my aunt, and I was looking for someone to take Instagram picture of me…so I dragged her to take some pictures of me.

How did you find and why did you choose Christina Smith for your photographer?
I chose Christina because she is a local photographer with great pictures! She also took pictures of my sister-in-law so I knew her and have seen her work before. I had a blast Christina taking my pictures and she was my biggest hype women throughout the whole thing!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Continue working hard, through the struggles. It is easier to quit than to fight, but quitting won’t lead you towards success.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself living in my hometown and teaching back at my former high school.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Spending time with my family, especially after Sunday Church services and going to visit with my whole family on my great grandma’s sunporch.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Inspiring things about me include my goal setting and my work ethic. I have always set goals for myself, in order to achieve my wants and dreams. Not only do I set these goals for myself, but I work hard to achieve them. I don’t let obstacles hold me back from pushing myself towards success. I think everyone needs goals for themselves, so we all have something to work towards and dream about.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present the importance of community service. Throughout my four years of high school, I have served over 50 hours of community service. I have done everything from shoveling snow to organizing a charity ‘Basket Binga’. No matter what service I did, it has always left an impact on others. I hope to encourage others to involve themselves with serving others. Doing any kind of task for one’s community can make a positive impact. Isn’t this a goal majority of us have…to make positive impact on the people around us. Community service is the way to achieve that goal.

Caden Gibbs – North Carolina
Nomination & Photography by Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Caden Gibbs is such a wonderful representative of this community. In addition to being a 2-sport athlete (Volleyball and Softball), she is a volunteer athletic trainer for all sports at her high school. Caden is also a nanny for a young boy with extreme disabilities, and cares for him on a regular basis with love and care that comes from her heart. She is constantly noticed by her school's administration as a leader in the school. It has been such an honor to get to know her and to create such memorable photographs to capture a piece of her in her senior year!

Tell us about your softball career. When did you get started, where are you at with it now, what position do you play - etc.
I was a late bloomer and didn’t start playing softball until I was in middle school, my entire childhood I danced and had no interest in anything else until one day I got the bright idea to try it and fell in love. I am a utility player, so I go anywhere and everywhere, I’ve played up to 5 positions in a single game. As of right now I have a few standing scholarships to play in college, but I’m still trying to figure out if that’s the right path.

What is a favorite accomplishment from softball?
My favorite accomplishment in softball would have to be playing varsity all 4 years of high school. We have a very good program, and you have to earn everything you get.

Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I’m just another teenage girl that plays volleyball, but where I stand out is I am only 5’6 and I play front row as an outside hitter.

What is a favorite memory with your volleyball team?
My favorite memory would be my senior night because the whole atmosphere of the gym was just eccentric.

What are your duties as a volunteer athletic trainer?
My duties include, covering and cleaning wounds, wrapping joints, making sure teams get proper hydration, preparing ice bags, preparing ice baths, helping with treatments, monitoring weather conditions, and helping make sure athletes take care of themselves. What I love most about it is the hands-on experience it provides and the personal relationships you create.

How did you find and why did you choose Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader for your photographer?
I found Pat Shrader when he came to the school to take pictures for our senior sports banners. I showed him what I wanted for my senior pictures and asked him if he could do them, he told me he could and would love to see what we could create.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I had an amazing experience! He was so enthusiastic and encouraging the whole session. I loved how creative the whole experience was and how he used simple objects to make a masterpiece.

Why did you choose to be a nanny for a young boy with extreme disabilities and what do you love doing most with him?
His family needed someone who could give him one on one attention. I had previous experience in nanny positions and was BLS (basic life support) and first aid certified which gave them comfort. I ultimately chose to be his nanny because I knew he needed me, I could provide the care for him no one else could. Over time our relationship just grew and it wasn’t a job anymore I genuinely loved being with him.

What do you wish others knew about working with a child with disabilities?
I wish others knew that it’s not an easy job. You constantly stress about what could go wrong, that you’re not doing what they need or that they aren’t comfortable. The little boy I nanny for can’t communicate so some days were really hard because he couldn’t tell me what he needed, so I wish others knew how it teaches you not to give up. You keep trying to you figure out what they need and get it right.

What else would you like to talk about?
My joy and enthusiasm for helping people and how that has created a sturdy foundation for a career or what I’d like to do in the future.

What career would you like to have?
I would like to be a nurse in a level 1 trauma center and eventually earn my CRNA-DNP to practice anesthesia.

What is your best leadership quality?
I would say my best leadership quality is my resilience, I try to quickly overcome things and focus on the next obstacle ahead of me.

What will you miss most about high school?
The thing I will miss most about high school will probably be the general atmosphere and the experiences. It was nothing like the movie High School Musical but I could certainly make a movie out of my time in high school!

Picture
Photography by Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?
I’m most looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life. I’m ready to experience new things, go new places and create new relationships.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some interesting things my nomination does not cover include, I am a CNA at a private medical center, I am a camp counselor for the STAR (Sheriffs Teaching Abuse Resistance) program in my county, I am a member of NHS (National Honor Society) at my high school, I am a member of NCHSS (North Carolina High School Scholars) and I just recently won first place in a regional HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) competition.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I could present a topic it would probably be the importance of checking in caregivers. Caregivers are always taking care of somebody, but no one really steps back and checks on them. I feel so passionate about this because I’m a caregiver and I know what it’s like from this perspective, I’ve taken care of children with physical needs to medically complex patients recovering from surgery. We deal with people at their worst and it is honestly very weighing at times, it’s a job full of emotion that can’t always be expressed. Caregivers go through a lot and are real life superheroes who needs more credit for what they do and to be checked on more than they do.
