Brianna Katz

Picture

Brianna Katz – Kansas
Nomination & Photography by Lauren Melissa Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Brianna is bold—both in front of and behind the camera. I met Brianna in our local coffee shop. Her willingness to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger ultimately led to our photoshoot together. And when she isn't spontaneously meeting new people, she is passionate through her servant-leadership. Brianna was the regional president of her youth group, BBYO (the largest growing, international, teen-lead, pluralistic Jewish movement in the world). With her position and her passion to serve others, she ensured that teens were part of the Jewish community and important Jewish conversations were held throughout the area.

Tell us more about this role. How did you get it, what is it, and what are your roles and responsibilities?
The role of regional president of BBYO consisted of creating, overseeing, and leading both virtual and in person programs for fellow teens. As president I also mentored and aided younger groups of aspiring leaders, and I orchestrated training conferences and conventions with the rest of my board along with other regional presidents. I was elected into the position, and I am forever honored to have been able to serve in it.

What sort of changes were you able to make in your community through it?
I was able to inspire younger members of my youth group to want to get more involved in their community. By encouraging them to be part of the larger conversations our community has regarding religion, community service, and the ever changing allyships we need to create, not only did the teens learn to stand up for themselves, but we taught the adults how to listen to and appreciate a younger voice.

What are you most proud of from being a leader in this endeavor?
I am most proud of persevering throughout the pandemic. Immediately when the pandemic started I joined multiple task forces that worked to move our programming online, support the upstanding workers in our community, and fundraise for families in need.

Picture
Photography by Lauren Melissa Photography

What are you doing now to help prepare for this career?
I am currently working full time at a law firm in order to understand the work that goes into law cases, as well as working at a coffee shop. By doing both jobs I am learning how to manage my work, mental health, and financially support myself.

What legacy or inspiration do you hope to leave behind to younger teens you are working with now in this regard?
I hope to leave a legacy of hard work and self love. I am the kind of person who tends to put themself last when it comes to helping others, regardless of who they are. I am learning how to balance my workload, the help I give to others, and the love and care I need to give myself. When I am at my best, I can in turn help others to the best of my ability. I hope younger teens can see this and learn from it as well.

Erika Paluck

Picture

Erika Paluck - Washington
Nomination and Photography by Radiant Photography by Selina
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Erika Paluck is an inspiration to all who know her. As a class of 2021 graduate, she completed her first year of college, all while babysitting, selflessly watching her younger siblings through the pandemic, as cheer captain for the last two years, AND maintaining a 3.741 GPA. She enjoys being near the water and time spent with loved ones. Erika also volunteers her time coaching younger boys’ and girls’ cheer camps and at a hometown festival. Erika dreams of becoming a NICU or pediatric nurse and raising a family. Erika finds encouragement from Finding Dory to “just keep swimming.”
Picture
Photography by Radiant Photography by Selina

What should we definitely know about you?
My determination and success throughout high school. I kept my grades up in high school and my first year of college all while babysitting my younger siblings and a few extra kids. At first, life was crazy trying to balance everything out, but in the end, I loved every second I got to spend with those kids. I finished high school with a 3.74 and my first year of college with a 3.98 GPA. The pandemic had a huge impact on my senior year, but without it I wouldn't have completed my first year of college. I would consider myself a very outgoing and kind person, I try my best to make everyone feel very welcomed.

Picture
Photography by Radiant Photography by Selina

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

As briefly talked about, I was a cheer captain for two years. Which included making important decisions for the team, trying to keep a positive attitude on the team, and much more. Cheerleading was so much more than a sport to me, it was my life for three years. I started cheering my sophomore year of high school and stayed with it until I graduated. Cheer was the only place I felt like I belonged; I could be myself and not get judged, it was my home away from home. Even though there were some bad days at cheer, I loved that my squad had such a strong bond and nothing could break us. A lot of the girls on the squad looked up to me, some even said I was the glue to the squad. Not only while being on the court or field I loved being a leader, I try to keep a good balance between people so their opinions are heard.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Substance abuse is a topic that is very important, but not a lot of people talk about it. It is amazing how much help is out there for the abuser, but sometimes they are given too many chances. All the chances can end up hurting children involved in the situation. I know from first-hand experience that children that are involved in substance abuse problems, are affected the most because they have no control over the problem. The programs that are out there for abusers are amazing; however, the number of chances abusers are given is sometimes too much.

Jace Farnsworth

6/29/2021

Picture

Jace Farnsworth - Texas
Nomination by Kim Farnsworth
Photography by Tiffy B Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jace is an inspiration to his friends, teammates  and family by showing respect & compassion for others.  Jace is an inspiration in the classroom, always making sure his grades come first; an A student taking AP & challenging classes all while working part time, playing year round baseball  and golf. Jace is also an inspiration on the baseball field putting his teammates first and foremost; Jace is an inspiration to any young child that dreams of playing college baseball by showing that hard work, determination, positive attitude & respect for the game, pays off.

Photography by Tiffy B Photography

I began to fall in love with baseball when I was about 2 and would always watch my brothers baseball games and my mom had bought us season tickets for the Astros. I started playing baseball at 3 years old at the YMCA because it was the only place that would let me play so young. Then in the fall I began playing little league and then in the following Spring I started playing 6U select baseball.
I play shortstop and second base normally but I do play some occasional third base and outfield. I have pitched and was even was a catcher when I was younger.
I have played for many teams but the most recent has been my high school team- Grand Oaks HS & with Dynasty Baseball right now, I will continue to play this fall at Regis University in Denver, CO.
My favorite memory from baseball was the playoff run that I had with my high school team this past Spring, we went four rounds into the 6A Texas State Playoffs in our first full season as a team at the school.
My biggest accomplishment so far has been receiving a scholarship to play baseball in college.
Photography by John Glaser Photography

My biggest leadership position on the baseball field was helping lead my high school baseball team this past season. We had some young guys that hadn’t been able to be in a varsity high school program for very long and they struggled with their mentality at this high level, so I really tried to help them get on the right path because I knew how good they were and how much better they could be. I was able to be a leader off the field, too. In the classroom I did well so I could help some of the other guys that struggled a bit to help motivate them to make better grades.
My golf career started when I was little, as my dad is an ex-professional golfer so he had me out on the course all the time with him. But my golf career slowed down a lot when I became more serious with baseball during high school. I only played maybe ten to fifteen times a year, but I still made the varsity golf team at Oak Ridge HS my Freshman year & at Grand Oaks HS the next 3 years.
The best golf game I’ve ever played was during a high school golf tournament where I shot an 81 at Wind Rose Golf Club. I know that’s not amazing but that’s a very good score for someone like me, who hardly gets to play.
My dream golf courses that I want to play are St. Andrews (the old course), Augusta National, and Pebble beach.
Maintaining good grades while also playing 2 sports and having a job was difficult sometimes because it took a lot of time and effort. I didn’t have a big social life but I was okay with that because I enjoyed playing sports, making good grades and making money. My biggest tip to others trying to juggle all of that is to make time for yourself, to chill out and wind down or else you will be extremely stressed.
The advice I would give to someone is keep pushing forward for your dreams, never quit and appreciate all the support your parents, family and friends are giving you.

Jennifer Theis

Jennifer Theis - Arizona
Nominated by Agnes Theis
Photography by Steve Chadwick Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jennifer Theis is the title holder of Miss Teen Arizona US Nation 2021, and a signed model. She is very determined to fundraise money for her college and title holder expenses. She takes academics very seriously and is attending ASU in the fall. She is majoring in Biomedical sciences with hopes of becoming a Physician's Assistant in the future. Part of every amount that she receives goes to the Wounded Warrior Regiment to help support Marines in recovery. The Marine Corps is very close to Jennifer’s heart as her brother is currently serving and is one of her biggest inspirations.

Photography by Steve Chadwick Photography

Tell us more about your title. What made you decide to go after it and what was a favorite memory from the experience? I decided to embark on my journey as a title holder during Super Chic Phoenix Fashion Week. With my modeling career beginning, I knew holding a state title, earning sponsorships, and participating in the opportunities that came along with it, would help me get a leg up. My favorite memory so far is being able to meet many different people that share the same interest as me, from across the USA!

What are your duties as a title holder? My duty as a title holder is to all around make a good image for myself and my state. For example, donating and supporting programs such as the Wounded Warrior Regiment, and showing up to events held in my town as a public figure. Being a title holder is all about setting a good example, while inspiring others around you to do so as well.

Tell us more about your modeling career. I began my modeling career a little over a year and a half ago, when I decided being a competitive dancer was not something I wanted in my future. It has been an amazing experience so far and I have had the opportunity to walk the runway during fashion shows in Phoenix, Chicago, and New York. Meeting such talented models and photographers constantly pushes me to keep working on my career.

How are you involved in your community? One of the ways I am involved in my community is by promoting small businesses. For example, ShopPhoenixGlam is a small boutique owned by Liz Mendariz. She is currently one of my sponsors, and in return I can wear her clothing and promote it on my Instagram and tik tok to help her grow her business! Another way I am involved is by attending important events in my community. The Memorial Day Ceremony was held in Gilbert AZ, and I was invited by the mayor to join. It was an amazing experience that I will always remember, especially since my brother is a Marine.

What does your academic future look like? I am so excited for my academic future, and the journey that is soon to start. I have always wanted to have a career in the medical field, while still fulfilling my dreams as a model. I am currently enrolled to start my studies in the fall at Arizona State University and will be majoring in Biomedical Sciences. My hopes are to complete my Bachelors and Masters degree, and become a Physician's Assistant. Academics are something that I was always taught not to take lightly, and to keep consistent.

Addison Kocher

6/29/2021

Picture

Addison Kocher – Ohio
Nomination by Kristen Kocher
Photography by 12.9 Dance
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Addison is inspiring because of her dedication, love for others and her adventurous spirit. Addison is dedicated to her dance team as she works daily to grow as a dancer and won’t miss an opportunity to be in the studio. Addison is also a very dedicated student who excels in all areas. Addison loves her friends and family fiercely. She is a caring friend and the organizer of all get-togethers. Addison is an amazing older sister who her brothers adore. Addison views life as one big adventure whether dancing, school, friendships, hiking, traveling, or just hanging out at home.

What should we definitely know about you?
Dance has taught me how to persevere and given me the chance to grow as a person. I started dancing in fourth grade and it quickly became my passion. I had a lot of work to do to catch up, as many girls start dancing at a very young age but I was determined. Dance has taught me a lot about determination and perseverance.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
It was mentioned in my nomination that I have two younger brothers. My middle brother is 4 years younger than me and then my family adopted my youngest brother from DR Congo. Walking through the adoption experience with my family has allowed me to grow in areas of love, patience, and empathy. The adoption experience has opened my eyes to the needs and children overseas that need families or care.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
I love watching football. I can talk about the NFL teams and games all day long. Following NFL teams on social media has inspired me to want to work in the social media department of the NFL one day. I am already looking for opportunities to pursue marketing experience. It isn't always typical for girls to have such passion for football but it's who I am, and I am confident in it.

Nakayla Foster

6/25/2021

Picture

Nakayla Foster - Virginia
Nomination and Photography by Sherri Fox Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Nakayla is very involved with her church and community she participates in the praise dancing team, sings on the choir, and volunteers at the daily bread. She loves sports, especially track where she competes at Rustburg High School. Her dream is to attend NC A&T University where she wishes to study there to become a lawyer and run college track. In Nakayla’s free time she enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

My hobbies are running track, I love going out and doing things I haven’t done before, I enjoy having game nights with my family and going places with my friends. I am very busy with track because I just got finished with school track but now I am running AAU track so that takes up majority of my time during the day.

I am most proud of how I have significantly improved in track. Ever since I started, I have noticed I have focused more on improving and I have became faster each year. Track has always been my go to sport even after all the other sports I have participated in.

My academic and athletic goals are going to NC A&T for law and also running college track. I have always said I wanted to be a police officer or a lawyer ever since I was in elementary school. The reason I want to be a lawyer is because I love to debate but at the same time I also like to help and defend people.

I have conquered many things in Track such as breaking my school’s record in all of my running events, winning the State Championship, and also getting my PR at every track meet. I have come such a long way ever since I started running when I was 8.

I practice every day for about 2 hours. Majority of the time I am working on coming out of blocks at the start line or sprinting drills. The hardest thing to overcome when I am training is definitely trying to catch my breath quickly enough before my coach makes me run again. At a track meet after I have completed my events, I feel very accomplished and satisfied with my performance.

I feel like whatever you want to do in life you can do as long as you put your mind to it. Never let anyone down talk you or tell you that you are not going to be able to accomplish what you want to accomplish. Always be positive and stay focused on your goal.

I have been a part of my church ever since I was little. I started praise dancing at the age of 4 and I also sung on the choir. I enjoy praise dancing because it is another way to worship God while moving around at the same time.

When I first volunteered at the daily bread it was really sad to watch people from the streets come in with dirty clothes and no food or water to drink. Volunteering made me appreciate the small things that we take for granted.

Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Laylah wears kindness on her sleeve. She is compassionate, understanding, and always available to lend a hand. Since she was a little girl, she has loved to sing, dance, and dress up like her favorite characters from books or television shows. This passion developed into a creative soul, sensitive to all those around her, generously giving her time to whoever needs it. What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I love to sing and draw! It’s my favorite way of self-expression that really allows me to relax and let loose.

What type of music do you like to sing and what is your favorite song to sing?
I love listening to all kinds of music! I love the art pop genre because of how mystical it sounds. My favorite song I’m listening to right now is Soft Universe by Aurora. She’s always my go to when I feel like unwinding!

Tell us about a favorite drawing of yours.
I don’t have any pictures of my drawings that I could give, but I have a painting! My favorite one I’ve done is my daffodil painting. I think we tend to forget that art isn’t always about improving but done for the sake of creating it!

Picture
"This painting was done during quarantine by me because I missed going out in the fields with my friends. I couldn’t wait to be outside again!" - Laylah

What are your plans for the future?
I’m passionate about going into the medical field and becoming an osteologist, especially because a lot of my family is in the medical field and is currently serving our community during the pandemic. It helped me understand that my true passion is helping others and that I want to join them in their passion!

What else should we know about you?
Throughout my high school career, I have excelled in academics. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from James Clements High School in Madison, AL this year.
Currently I’m working as a medical technician at Madison hospital where I will spend a year serving my community, gaining knowledge and preparing for her college career. Following that experience, I will attend the University of Alabama, Birmingham where I will study osteology! I’m very thankful to have a supportive family who loves me!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to garden! I once went to a community garden with peers from my school to go rake weeds from their garden areas. Seeing the plants flourish puts the biggest smile on my face! It’s also just a great way to bond with friends and family by working together and seeing, the fruits of your labor, literally!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I think we should start community compost bins! They are a great way to reduce waste and help the environment. I persist in doing so because it takes topsoil up to a thousand years to create a new layer, so this is a great way to make your own soil instead! It also helps bring a community together by: working to make the compost bin, maintain it properly, and using the soil for gardening or planting. It helps the earth by helping yourself!

Peyton Young - Mississippi
Nomination and Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Peyton Young has been involved in many activities in school, church, and community. Peyton was an exceptional student at Madison-Ridgeland Academy where she served as captain of the basketball and soccer teams. She also gives her time serving in various camps for younger children at her school. Peyton graduated high school from Madison-Ridgeland Academy. She has also been very involved in Broadmoor Baptist church where she served on the youth leadership team.
Peyton will further her education at the University of South Alabama where she was accepted into the early acceptance program for Physical Therapy School.
Picture
Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography

Tell us more about your sports careers in basketball and soccer. What did it mean to you to be a captain of both? What legacies do you hope to leave behind?
Being a captain of the soccer and basketball teams meant a lot to me because it showed that my teammates looked up to me. As a captain, I was able to lead in a way that honored Christ on and off the field. Including others is a big part of my legacy because I know what it feels like to be excluded, and I want those around me to feel accepted.

Picture
Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography

What activities do you do with those with special needs and how did you get started?

I volunteer with many events for those with special needs, but the main one is working with them on Sunday mornings. We host a Sunday school class, so their guardians can go to their classes and attend the sermon. It also allows those with special needs to encounter Christ just like everyone else. I first started working with those with special needs in middle school at an event called TopSoccer. It gave those with special needs the opportunity to play soccer and stay active.

How often do you meet with them and what have you learned from these experiences?
Events are held throughout the year, but I volunteer with the ministry at Broadmoor Baptist Church once a month or fill in when extra help is needed. The main thing I’ve learned from these experiences is that I have more than enough and should be content with what I have. Those with special needs are always joyful and have a smile on their face which truly humbles me because they don’t allow their circumstances to determine their attitudes.

Picture

Tell us more about FCA (What does it stand for?) and what leadership roles did you have?

FCA stands for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It’s an organization that hosts Christian gatherings for athletes in high school and college. Because I was on the leadership team, I helped plan the meetings we had, and I even had the opportunity to speak at our meetings. FCA meets every Friday morning @7:15, and a different student or coach speaks. As part of the leadership team, people were always looking up to me, so it was important for me to watch my actions and make sure I was leading in a way that honored Christ.

Picture
Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography

What did you learn about leadership from SLi? What was your biggest accomplishment with them?
I learned that even though I’m an ordinary teenager, I can still make a difference in the world. Leadership also isn’t about gathering people to follow me because ultimately, it’s not about me. Leadership is me pursuing Christ and others following me because of Christ working through my life. My biggest accomplishment was going on mission trips to Jackson, MS and Orlando, FL and being able to share the love of Christ with those around me.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have played volleyball year round for six years and have volunteered my time this past summer to help out our middle school coaches during practices. I was at every practice and also helped during middle school volleyball camps. I have been a drummer for eight years. I have not only put in the work to improve by taking private lessons every week for the past eight years but I have also put in the time to help others improve by teaching private lessons to those much younger than me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
I would talk about the prevalence of inequality and racism in schools and why as a society we need to make a change. A child attends school at a crucial part of their life where they are growing and developing and things such as sexism and racism from teachers or fellow students alter that development way too often. I have seen it happen first hand and I feel this is an important issue that is not discussed enough. The classroom is no place for sexism and racism.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
My journey with barrel racing and becoming the Fiesta Days Rodeo Princess.

Tell us about your barrel racing career. How did you get started, what is training like and how many hours a day or week do you spend doing it?
I was raised on horses, mostly as a trail riding family hobby and helping family friends move cattle.  When I couldn’t be on a horse, I swiftly carried my stick pony everywhere I went.  Stick ponies make good barrel horses too, so I thought at a mere 2 years old. Rolls of paper towels went missing as I created my cloverleaf pattern on the living room floor.  That stick pony won every living room barrel race she entered. Little did my family know, this was just a sneak peak of what my future would hold.

At 14 years old, I bought my first barrel horse prospect.  He had never seen a barrel pattern, but I was determined to make him my barrel partner.  I recreated my living room races in an arena, not knowing what I was doing at all.  I was determined, pouring hours and hours of time trying to perfect this giant steed around those three barrels.  I failed terribly, I was frustrated, all I wanted was to make what we call a “clean run”.  I reached out for guidance to a woman who regularly worked her horses at the arena. She took me in and taught me the ropes... she inspired me, I wanted to be just like her.

Four years later, I have 2 finished barrel horses and am training my future prospect.  I travel on the weekends to compete in barrel races and spend weekdays critiquing my weekend performances. Life in the barn with my ponies is always an adventure and so rewarding!

What is your proudest moment or accomplishment with the sport?
My most accomplished moment in my barrel racing career was winning my first barrel race.  I walked away with the most beautiful buckle and a feeling like I just conquered the world.  This win was 2 years in the making, my mare and I worked endlessly trying to perfect the barrel pattern at a high rate of speed and we finally did it.

How did you become Fiesta Days Rodeo Princess and what does this glorious status entail?
In 2019, I was honored with the opportunity to run for the Durango Fiesta Days Rodeo Princess. The competition had daily challenges; public speaking, modeling, horsemanship, personal interview, a written test on Durango Fiesta Days history and the queen and flag runs around the arena.  I was crowned Princess after a very exciting week.  Being part of the Durango Fiesta Days Royalty has been very rewarding, I represent the heritage and sport of rodeo. I am required to wear a cowboy hat with crown, a sash with my title, flashy western attire, tight curls, and an affectionate smile.

Quincy Wilson

6/10/2021

Picture

Quincy Wilson - Alabama
Nomination by Tracey Wilson
Photography by Providence Photography & others
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Quincy Wilson turned a brief moment in her dance education into an opportunity to help others. She felt so empowered when given the chance to dance on her high school's dance team in flesh toned tights, that she wanted other brown dancers to experience the same. She therefore formed "Variation En Hue," a project dedicated to allowing brown dancers to show their true colors on stage. She has collected over 500 costumes as well as new flesh-toned tights and shoes and has distributed them across the U.S. and internationally to Guatemala, Ghana and Nigeria. How inspiring!
Picture

Tell us about your dance career.
I started dancing when I was 3 years old so I am starting my 13th year of dance. I practice all genres of dance but my studio focuses on mainly Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, and Hip-Hop. Despite that, I like to spend my free time learning other styles of dance like taking modern classes, ballroom classes, etc. Typically, I dance somewhere around 12-15 hours a week including weekends, sometimes more or less, depending on rehearsals or competitions.

What is your favorite memory or accomplishment from dance?
My favorite memories/accomplishments from dance were the 2 weeks that I spent in Chicago at Hubbard Street Dance Intermediate-Advanced Intensive. Exploring the city, making new friends, and learning new styles of dance from accomplished instructors was such an amazing experience that still impacts me and my dancing today. That opportunity definitely solidified my aspirations to pursue dance as a career and gave me the confidence to return back to my studio better than ever and share what I learned with my friends and teachers.

Picture

How are you giving back through dance?
My project Variation En Hue is dedicated to collecting and donating ballet costumes, as well as flesh-toned tights and shoes to studios and dancers in need. My goal is to promote diversity and inclusion in the dance world.

How did you get started with this?
I created this project during the pandemic, looking to donate some of my dancewear to the supply closet at Brown Girls Do Ballet®. I started thinking that I could do better, knowing that every girl feels amazing in a ballet costume, tights, and shoes that complement her skin tone. I was lucky to work with Mrs. Takiyah Wallace, the owner of Brown Girls Do Ballet® to kickstart my project by hosting costume drives, Instagram takeovers, and news interviews to spread the word about Variation en Hue™. I have since collected over 500 costumes and have shipped many nationally and internationally.

Why is it so important to you?
Being uncomfortable in my costumes because they don’t match my skin should be the least of my worries. I truly cannot express the feeling that I had when I put on my first pair of brown tights and shoes, and I hope that I am able to give that same feeling to another little brown girl. Seeing the smiles of the girls that I help is priceless, and it makes me feel purposeful. I also hope that brown dancers of the next generation are cultivated in an environment that makes them feel welcomed and accepted instead of alienated and rejected.

Picture

How else do you inspire other dancers?
Apart from my Variation en Hue™ project, another inspiring thing about me is that I spend my free time assisting/teaching dance classes, tumbling classes, and strength & conditioning classes to younger students. Through this opportunity, I can share with kids the importance of exercise and assist them in finding their own passions and ambitions regardless of their background or appearance.

What else are you involved in?
I'm also active in a club at my school that works with special needs students and have been able to serve as secretary of the club for the past year. Within this club, I help plan activities intended to promote inclusivity and acceptance at my school and spend time with my special needs friends throughout the school day.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?
I could talk forever about my love for big cities. I've always been obsessed with big cities, bright lights, and skylines because to me they represent people who are dedicated to working hard and accomplishing their goals. I’m an ambitious and driven person with big dreams! Places such as New York and LA remind me of others like me, who go out of their comfort zones and chase their dreams until they become realities. Cities symbolize commitment, passion, and hard work, all qualities I possess; and, I hope to join other people like me in a city, hustling to succeed.

What's next for you?
I'm excited for college and hoping to pursue a career in commercial dance after high school, but my options are open and I am excited for whatever is to come. I'd love to attend college in California and I’m hoping to be able to get an agent sooner or later! No matter what, I definitely see dance in my future and I’m taking in everything that I can during these last two years of high school that I have left!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to put the work in even when they least feel like it and know that nobody else can get them to where they want to be, it’s all about self-dedication and your own hard work!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Five years from now I see myself attending college in a big city such as New York, LA, or Chicago and pursuing my career in commercial dance by having an agent and booking jobs.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite pastime is definitely obsessing over music, I love discovering new artists, making playlists, talking about music with friends, and going to concerts.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is that I can wiggle my ears without touching them:)

Who do you find inspiring?’
I find anyone who doesn’t just have dreams and aspirations but puts in the work to make them happen inspiring.

Tell us about your dance experience from start to now.
I started dancing when I was 2 years old, and I’ve loved it ever since. When I first started, I did ballet and tap at Star Performance Centre, and I still dance there today. However, I now do hip-hop, pom, jazz, and dance for my school dance team. With all of that, I commit about 9 hours to dance per week. Dancing is a huge part of my life and I’m hoping to carry with me for a long time.

What is a favorite dance memory?
One of my favorite dance memories was going on stage for the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic. It was something I had been dreaming about ever since the pandemic began and it was such a magical moment. Everyone was hyping each other up and we were so excited to get out on the stage and do what we love.

What is a proudest dance accomplishment?
One of my proudest dance accomplishments was when my jazz team was named Grand Champion at a competition. There were a lot of talented dancers competing and we had worked really hard to earn the title.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to help others and participate in service projects. I’ve worked with Hope’s Closet several times which serves foster children. I also helped lead “Project Positivity” when I was in junior High. This included putting inspirational quotes in each of the restrooms and on students’ lockers.

What do you enjoy most about being in a leadership position for service projects, and what do you plan to lead next?
I truly enjoy being in a leadership position for service projects because I love seeing people come together to help others. We can accomplish so much if we join forces for the greater good. I hope to work on leading a more comprehensive recycling program at my school.

PicturePhotography by 12.9 Dance

What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?
I would make a presentation on why it is important to take care of the earth. I think being aware of your impact on the planet is really important and I love to talk about ways we can improve and help save Earth.

What tips or ideas can you share with us now?
My biggest tip would be to recycle. It is so simple yet so important. A lot of people think that recycling doesn’t make an impact, but in reality, it helps save our planet. Another tip is to try to use reusable bags, napkins, water bottles, utensils, and more. There are so many simple and easy things that we can all do to help make a difference.

Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Shannon was born to lead. When her family's haunted house nonprofit needed a volunteer director, she stepped right up and helped. Now in 2021, when Shannon found out her school wasn't having a prom, she went and booked one herself. Then hearing that many students couldn't go because of been hit financially from the pandemic, Shannon decided to raise money for the ticket cost. Out of the 107 guests, more than half are going because of donations! The This Is Our Night prom is open to seniors from last year and to any student denied a prom this year. She's just amazing and we are so proud of her.

Tell us about the prom you are hosting for your fellow students.
When my school decided not to do a prom, I decided that I didn't want to miss out on such an important high school memory. I booked a hall and started selling tickets for seniors from last year and those whose schools cancelled their proms. Then I found out that so many students couldn't afford to go. I started a fundraiser to sponsor a student's prom ticket. Now more than half of those going were donated by the community! The 'This Is Our Night Prom' is June 17 and I'm really excited. I hope everyone that goes has a magical time.

Did you ask for help? Where did you find help and what was it like taking on such a great leadership position?
I relied on my Mom A LOT and a few of my friends. I sent out press releases to local news organizations to help me get the word out. Then I reached out to local businesses to help me get things like photos and decorations paid for. We lost so much due to the pandemic. I just needed a way to make this happen for local seniors.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I've always been big into art and I love being around kids. I hope to go to college to do art therapy and teaching for children and those with disabilities.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?
Get involved with your community! Do community service! It really makes you feel better about yourself and doing something for others is really important. Not many people take the time to do things for others and it's just too important. Not only do I volunteer with my families nonprofit, but I donate my time to helping another non-profit give out gifts to the elderly.

Picture
Photography by NRG Imaging

Tell us about your family's nonprofit.

My family runs a nonprofit called Croydon Haunted Hollows. Over 50 volunteers dress up and put on a scary Halloween show every year for free for our community. We are also the first in our area to do a Sensory Friendly Haunted House for families with autistic children. I am the volunteer director for all the school age volunteers and I love it.

What other community service projects do you do?
I volunteer at a local nonprofit called The Christmas Gala and they deliver gifts and necessities to the elderly all year long. I've helped deliver gifts and even designed some Christmas Cards to be mailed to senior citizens. I also have done video editing work for another local nonprofit called the 3C of Connecting Foundation. They support local businesses and run events that help raise money for other nonprofits. They have a lot of networking events and I love going. Networking is definitely a skill that everyone should know.

3 things on your bucket list
Travel to Italy or Ireland. Graduate College. Be a motivational speaker

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom!  Her intuition and all-knowing 'mom-ness'. Her ability to rationalize and work through any situation. Her generosity and selflessness. Her empathy for others. Her silly sense of humor. I wouldn't be the person I am without her guidance. I love you Mom!

Nomination: Kenna Anderson is in the national honors society and beta club, she's a daughter, sister, aunt, student, athlete, Christian, victim of bullying, and a cancer survivor. In her own words, "I have faced much adversity in my 17 years of life, and I have learned how to overcome, conquer, and come back stronger than before. The trials I've faced have molded me into a strong, independent woman, who has a passion for others. I strive to live by the words of an Emily Dickinson poem: "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain".

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
My hardships that has made me into the person I am today!

What do you want us to know about your hardships and what you've learned from them?
The challenges life has thrown at me has taught me to learn from them and come back stronger than before. To rise above my insecurities and doubts and show others that hardships are only temporary but putting faith in yourself and in God will make you stronger and more prepared for the many others you will face.

As a cancer survivor, what would you want others to know about having cancer that they wouldn't if they never had it or was close to someone who did?
I would tell others to hold their loved ones a little closer, hug a lot tighter, tell them you love them every chance you can, and never ever take any time spent with them for granted because some may noy be as fortunate as I was. Surviving cancer has given me a second chance to do all of those things and has given me so many opportunities that I will forever be grateful for. Even if you have never experienced it or haven’t had someone close to you have it, life can change in the blink of an eye, so cherish each and every moment you get.

Academics, being a part of the JGS model team, and community service.

Tell us more about your academics.
Academics have been a big part of my life since I was little. I have always strived to be the best I can be and get the highest grades possible. My favorite subject is by far English. Writing lets me free my mind and write whatever I’m thinking or feeling. I will be a senior next year but will also be attending Youngstown State University to take college level classes. Without all the hard work and dedication over the years, I would never be where I am right now. Working hard in school will help me accomplish my goals in life.

What is the JGS Model Team?
The JGS Model Team is a business created by Jennifer Petrey. She wanted to collect a group of kids every year to display her ideas and thought about different locations and themes for her photo shoots.
