Taylor Williams

Picture

Taylor Williams – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Taylor is inspiring because she is so adaptable to new experiences and life changes. When she was only 6 years old, her family uprooted and moved overseas to live in Jakarta Indonesia. In a foreign land, with a completely different culture and language, she acclimated, embraced and learned to adapt. She attended the international school and made a lot of friends. That experience helped shape her into who she is today. She is outgoing, open minded, adaptable to new situations, welcoming to people’s differences, and enjoys learning about new cultures. Taylor has always been a leader. She is not afraid to be herself and will always do what she feels is the right thing to do. Her family is proud of her and knows that she will continue to inspire others around her to have an appreciation and zest for life!

What we know about you?
My favorite volunteer service is working with Meals on Wheels, delivering food to people who are in need. It does the heart good to see the smiles on people's faces when you bring them food. Sometimes the people are older, and they seem to not get many visitors, so along with delivering food it gives them social contact with a smiling face and that is so rewarding.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a student-athlete. I have been involved in all-star competitive cheerleading since I was 7 years old. This requires 9 plus hours a week in the gym, tumbling and stunting and practicing a choregraphed routine. My schedule is hectic and sometimes stressful, but it has taught me time management skills and how to handle stressful situations better. I am an all-star cheerleader, a varsity school cheerleader (Captain), participate in many community services organizations and still maintain a 3.8 GPA.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
How important it is for young girls to feel self-confidence and love themselves for who they are. It is not good to feel envy or jealousy of another girl. Everyone is different, whether it be skin color, the texture of your hair or your body size or shape. But we are all the same on the inside and as long as we love ourselves for who we are, others will love us too.

Joyce Reising

Picture

Joyce Reising - Illinois
Nomination & Photography by Michael Sullivan Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Joyce Reising has found a way to keep busy while keeping her grades up. She has been in NHS for two years while also being a part of speech, drama, tennis, student helpers, and marching band. Joyce volunteers at her church in the religious education program. She also volunteered at a camp over the summer for 7 weeks at a camp in Michigan. She has 450 service hours, and her goal is to make it to 500 before graduation. Her top choice for college is Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin and she wants to be an athletic trainer someday.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about why I chose athletic training as my dream career. Playing in tennis one season, I sustained an injury and my school’s athletic trainers made me feel cared for and supported. Their actions made me feel inspired to help other athletes that care for a sport just like I do.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My world-changing experience to change lives, working at a summer camp. Every day was indeed different and sometimes very difficult, but there was no lack of fun! I was the group leader for the 4–6-year-olds and one of my main jobs was to come up with an amazing program with crafts, snacks and S.T.E.M. projects, that I would teach the group.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would love to present the importance of the arts in all schools and grade levels. From art, to music, to the performing arts, I believe that an important part of growing is to make the arts available to children at a young age. Not only is it great for your brain, but it often creates a great way for people to express their feelings.

Hannah Feig

12/31/2021

Picture

Hannah Feig – Maryland
Nomination by Heidi Isenberg-Feig
Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Hannah Feig (she/them) has never been an average teenager. Their artistic abilities, both visual and performing, are amazing. They love learning for learning's sake and they are passionate about history, Judaic Studies, and literature. Not one to follow the crowd, Hannah chooses kindness and compassion toward others, even to the detriment of their own social status. Hannah’s ADHD and anxiety can be a challenge at times, but these have also helped them develop a strong sense of self confidence. As a music teacher at our synagogue’s Sunday school, Hannah shares their talent with our community and is a true inspiration.

What should we definitely know about you?
I have dermatillomania. That means I pick at my skin unconsciously when I am feeling anxious. I spend a lot of energy resisting the urge to pick at my skin, and even though I know that it is not a healthy way to deal with stress and anxiety, it isn't easy to stop. My skin is not smooth and clear like other kids my age, but my outward appearance is not a reflection of who I am. People see the scars on my skin and judge me on how I look, but that does not stop me from feeling confident.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I hope that I can be inspiring to teens who might feel like they don’t fit in. My ADHD and anxiety often get in the way of my ability to “go with the flow” like a lot of other kids do. I get easily overwhelmed with a lot of noise or other distractions, so I don’t enjoy many things that my peers do. I am also someone who loves learning for its own sake, and the grades are less important to me. Even though it might not be popular, it is important to be true to yourself.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
There are a few things that I can ramble on about, but one that is very important to me is my strong Jewish identity. I have been interested in becoming a Rabbi since I became a Bat Mitzvah four years ago. Even after I left the Jewish Day School I attended for the first nine years of school, I continued to study Jewish history, texts, and the State of Israel. I teach music to the elementary school kids at the religious school in my Synagogue, participate in services, and am co-clerk of the Jewish Affinity Group at my school.

She is also incredibly talented and started her own business, @simplyserene.co, which includes fine lettering and décor. She has a natural talent for design and artistry. She’s looking forward to college and majoring in business and fashion merchandising.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about how I have seen myself grow. Looking back at my past self and who I may be in the future, I would want to be asked how I’ve seen myself changed and if I like the person I am now. The one person I’m with all the time is myself, so I know myself better than anyone else does and have seen the ways in which I have become more mature and different, but how?

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
The inspiring things about me that my nomination does not cover is my ambition to someday travel the world. I want to be able to make money while also not being held back by it. I want to live freely by seeing and doing new things.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers, I would discuss mental health. I would discuss this because I feel that it’s significant in this modern day and has become more of a major issue. Teens need to feel comfortable with knowing nothing is wrong with them and knowing that they don’t need to feel as though they have to work harder than their mind can exceed. I have seen those close to be and even myself struggle with this and I want other people to know how to deal with it and how to understand it.

A member in national honors society
I want to be a dentist or vet
I never got to meet one of my grand dads so it makes me strive to work hard because of the stories I’ve heard of him being a hard worker

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Why every citizen should be required to serve a minimal of 2 years in the military. It wouldn’t have to be direct combat for every person, however everyone would have to go through the same boot camps to develop the worry ethic and self stability they would need to excel in life after.

If I were to present a topic to my peers, I would tell them how important it is to me to rescue animals that need help, and how we need more organizations that foster animals rather than keeping them in cages as they patiently wait to be adopted.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my goals for the future. I'm currently a junior in high school, so after I graduate, I am planning on attending a four year university to study biology, public health, or political science. I also want to study abroad in Europe. I love to travel because I love seeing new places and trying new activities brings a high level of excitement with it. I get to try delicious foods, learn new languages, and try new activities from snorkeling in Hawaii to tasting an exotic shark in Aruba. As a career after college, I'm considering becoming a scientist or president. I just have to see where my life takes me!

What else do you want us to know about your goals for the future?
I’m not totally sure what exactly I want to do in the future, but what I stated above is a rough idea of my current plans. I might attend graduate or medical school to get a master’s degree, depending on if it’s necessary for my future career. I hope to become the medical advisor to a president before I run, so that I can get political experience first. This way, the public can get to know me and my policies better, before I run for president.

Where has been your favorite place to travel to so far and what is a favorite memory or experience there?
I went to Hawaii when I was 9 and this is my favorite place that I’ve traveled to so far because of the stunning landscape. The ocean is so blue there and the waves are the perfect height for jumping. I enjoyed watching colorful sunrises on the beach and eating dinner with my feet in the soft sand. My favorite memory there was jumping off a boat for the first time when I went snorkeling and catching my first fish when I went fishing.

Picture
Photography by Erica Land Photography

Where do you plan to go next and why did you choose it?
I am going to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico over winter break this year with my family. I am super excited to go there because I have never been, so I will get to explore the area. I will be doing many activities like going snorkeling, sailing, and swimming in an infinity pool. I can’t wait to go to the beach too and to try the delicious local seafood and tacos on the food tour we are doing.

What are you doing now to prep to be a scientist or president?
I’m taking some science classes that are interesting to me like anatomy. Learning about the anatomy and physiology of the body as well as taking biology is helping me gain the fundamental knowledge to take more advanced classes in college, so that I can earn a science degree. As far as preparing to be president, I took a government class 2 years ago, which I really enjoyed, and I learned about the process to become president. Following politics recently, has inspired me to run in the future, most likely as soon as I become eligible when I’m 35.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am heavily involved with my youth group, BBYO, the leading pluralistic Jewish teen movement. It is entirely teen led and each chapter elects teen leaders. I'm currently serving as Ahavah BBG's Vice President of Judaism and community service. As part of my position, I was given the opportunity to support a cause I'm passionate about. I chose the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In October, I led my chapter during the AFSP Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Washington DC. We fundraised $1,663! I am incredibly grateful for the support and donations I received from my family and friends.

What is BBYO and what do you do in it?
BBYO is the largest pluralistic Jewish teen movement in the world, which works to provide meaningful Jewish experiences to teens of all denominations. A pluralistic organization means that any teen of any level of observance is welcome. Some teens are more religious than others, so there are a variety of programs that focus on different aspects of Judaism for teens to attend. I work to plan meaningful and fun programs with activities that help other teens form friendships like discussions and games. I run these programs and ensure each teen has fun and makes lasting memories.

Picture
Photography by Erica Land Photography

What is your biggest leadership role you've had so far and what did you learn from it?
My biggest leadership role is my current chapter board position as vice president of Jewish heritage and community service. I’ve learned that sometimes plans don’t always work out the way they are supposed to, and you have to open to change when it’s necessary. I learned how to work with other people and be a good role model for younger people. I didn’t even realize until recently that almost all the younger members in my chapter look up to me. Successful programs are super rewarding because you get to see people benefitting from the work you did and that feels amazing.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Mental health is not discussed as much as it should be, and people often forget that it is just as important as physical health. There is a massive stigma associated with it that originates from false negative stereotypes about people with mental illness. Mental illness is more common than you would think, as 792 million people are diagnosed with a mental health condition each year. It's important to educate people about mental health so that they know they are never alone. The challenges you face are valid. I want people to know that they are loved. You should never be embarrassed to seek medical help if you need to.

Why did you choose Erica Land as your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Erica Land as my photographer because her images look very professional, and she has beautiful locations where she takes photos. I love her Fierce Images page too. I have enjoyed being a Teen Model Ambassador for her because it has increased my self-esteem and helped me embrace my inner beauty and uniqueness. Modeling is fun because I like wearing cute clothes and trying on different outfits.

Avery Fox

Picture

Avery Fox – Maryland
Nomination by Tammy Fox
Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Avery Fox is compassionate with a sunny and welcoming personality. Her sister, her pets, her family, her friends and even strangers have all been privileged to be on the receiving end of her compassion. While in elementary school she took it upon herself to become a helper for the special needs students during her lunch and recess. Later, she began teaching a little girls’ ballet class at her dance studio. Avery has always had a love of children and the ability to relate to, and nurture those lucky enough to be around her. Academically gifted, she is writing and illustrating children’s books, which she shares with those she mentors.

Photography by Erica Land Photography
What should we know about you?
I have a passion for helping others in my community. Every Saturday morning, I assist baby ballet classes at my dance studio. I help little kids learn proper ballet technique and help them become more confident by performing with them on stage. It brings me so much joy to see the smiles on the kids’ faces after they come off the stage and during class when they master a new skill. Working with little kids makes me so incredibly happy because I get to see them grow throughout the year.

What got you started in assisting kids with ballet?
I wanted to try something new. I was at my dance studio early on Tuesdays and decided to help baby ballet class. The kids were cute and so incredibly tiny. How could I resist?

What do you love most about it?
I love seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces when they learn a new move and master it. It makes me feel so proud to know that I helped influence their happiness.

What is the hardest part about it and how do you overcome it?
The hardest part about teaching baby ballet is learning to manage my emotions while working with the little kids. Knowing when to be strict and be nice at the same time was very hard at first until I observed the kids different learning styles which made it easier for me to handle my emotions.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not include my position as a Maryland chapter ambassador for the non-profit organization, Balance Boxes. Balance Boxes provides boxes including a game, meal, snacks, and books for underprivileged kids. Each box is decorated with a theme for the time of year and what is in the box. I am an ambassador for the chapter meaning that my role is to gather donations and reach out to companies. I love having this leadership role because it teaches me time management and helps me become more responsible.

How did you get involved with Balance Boxes?
My family friend founded the non-profit organization and towards the beginning of the process included my sister and I as the Maryland Chapter because we wanted to help. My sister became the Maryland chapter head and I became an ambassador for the chapter.
What is a favorite accomplishment from a leadership role with them?
My favorite accomplishment from Balance Boxes was creating 100 boxes in one day. I planned a packing party to create the boxes and invited the rest of the Maryland chapter and a few friends and that morning we took a few hours to build, pack, and seal the boxes. This experience was extremely rewarding because I felt so much joy when we delivered the boxes.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would give a presentation about dance. I have been dancing for 12 years and it has basically become my life. I started in baby ballet and worked my way up to competing. Whenever I am dancing, I don't think about anything else, I just live in the present moment. Dancing makes me feel free and happy. I also love dance because it taught me to have respect for others at a young age, theater etiquette, and how to channel my emotions in a positive way. Dance helped me find my confidence in myself to perform on stage and become more outgoing.

Picture
Photography by Erica Land Photography

What is a favorite memory from dance or a dance competition?
Some of my favorite memories from competition came from going out to eat with my friends in between dances. During my second year on dance team, my team and I went out to Wegmans for food. We ate outside under the overhang when it started to storm. It was raining really hard and there was thunder too but we ignored it and played games on our phones. Then we went into the rain and did our competition dance. It was so much fun to have that unexpected bonding time with my team and I loved it so much.

Why did you choose Erica Land as your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Erica Land because I loved the images I saw on her Instagram and during my shoots. I had an amazing experience during my shoots and the team shoots too because I got to meet new people and make new friends. I love the fact that I get to work with other people that share common interests with me, and I get to make new friends.

Megan Kath

Megan Kath – Indiana
Nomination by Angie Kath
Photography by MWPImages
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Megan has been involved in Scouts since an early age, beginning with Girl Scouts and finishing with Scouts, BSA. Megan has worked at summer camp teaching young scouts. Megan has been on honor roll every year in school. Megan volunteers for several non-profit organizations; from training service dogs to helping raise awareness and money for stroke survivors to assisting with the Riley Dance Marathon, and Junior Optimist Club. Megan has a heart of gold and a true zest for life. Megan took to the stage as a participant in several pageants this year to help gain self-confidence.

Tell us more about Scouts.
When I was younger my brother was in boy scouts, I thought it looked like a lot of fun, so I joined my local girl scouting troop. A few years later they allowed girls to join what is now called scouting BSA. So, in February of 2019 I became one of the first girls in scouting BSA. It was very hard for anyone in scouting to achieve eagle, but I was determined to do it in less than 2 years. I went to every meeting and event and worked as hard as I could. Scouting BSA quickly became like a family, they supported me in everything I wanted to accomplish, and they pushed me to be the greatest I could be.

What is your favorite accomplishment in Scouts?
In the summer of 2019 we were working towards a 60-mile hike in New Mexico. We did weekly hikes to train our bodies and while hiking we would learn things such as how to make a fire or pitch a tent and make food in the woods all with minimal supplies. We successfully completed our hike in Mexico and made many amazing memories I will never forget.

What did you teach young Scouts at summer camp?
Before I was able to join scouting, I started working at their summer camp just so I could try to do my part in it. The first year I volunteered at summer camp I was an eagle quest. This is the place that new kids in scouting come to learn the basics of scouting. Tasks such as tying knots, chopping wood and gathering kindling to make a fire, and learning the basics of safety in the woods. The next summer I taught the same thing but added on to my schedule and helped at the lake with life guarding.

What is your favorite class in school and what do you have to study for the most?
School has never come easy for me, so I have to study for hours for everything to get decent grades. I have learned that English and history are two of my most favorite subjects. This year I took a class called We the People, it is my first honors class where we learn everything about the constitution and how it was created all the till present day and how the founder’s decisions affect us. We competed at Regionals placing third and move on to compete at state with a brand-new topic within the creation of the constitution.

What will you miss about high school or your senior year specifically?
When I came into high school I was starting at a new school. It was scary but Plainfield quickly made me feel like I was at home. I will miss how close I am to all my teachers because I know I may not get that in college. I will miss show choir and after school practices then rushing over to the basketball or football games afterwards with all my friends. The amount of school spirit and energy Plainfield brings in like nothing I’ve seen before.

Why did you choose MWP for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
When I wanted to model a year ago, he was the first to reach out. During my first shoot with him we connected so well. I think it is important to be comfortable with your photographer to be best on camera, and he does just that. The best thing about being a part of MWP images is that Mike is well known through my community.

Tell us more about your service projects you do training service dogs.
A former local dog breeder got into training services dogs, and I was given the opportunity to work with her on a project that brought her service dogs into contact with several people to prepare the dog for everyday encounters of those other than the owner.

What are your roles pertaining to the Riley Dance Marathon to pull off such an awesome event?
Being in Riley Dance Marathon I have helped in raising money to donate to Riley Children's Hospital and spreading the word for people to show up to our event in April each year to help donate there as well.

What is your role in Jr. Optimist Club and what is a favorite memory in it?
While I don’t have a specific role in Jr. Optimist I still participate in as much as possible. One thing I have done this year was volunteering at the peewee baseball concessions. I got to watch little kids enjoying their love for baseball while also spending time with friends and making new ones.

Tell us more about pageant life. What have you learned from your experiences?
I just entered the life of pageants this year and jumped right in. I had no hesitation, I signed up for all the pageants I knew about. My first pageant I was nervous and shaking and was scared to make friends. By the end of summer, I had experienced 3 pageants and I noticed my confidence grow immensely from them. I would talk to everyone at the pageant and made lots of new friends and ended up placing top 5 in my local Miss Morgan County Pageant. I have learned to not be scared or nervous and to do everything with pure confidence.

Liz Miner – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by April Moore
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination Elizabeth Miner is a senior representative for my model team. She brings such a great energy to the team. I have known Liz for four years through Rugby which is one of her passions. She has really grown in the sport and is one of the team’s captains this year. Additionally, she has three jobs-vet assistant for Premier vet services, sales associates at Claire’s, and she house/pet sits on the side. She maintains a B average in her high school and college courses. She plans to attend ivytech for human social services with plans to further studies in sign language interpretation after a year of community college.

Why did you choose April Moore for your senior photographer? How did you get on the model team and what do you do for it? What was your experience like?
I have known April for the last four years through playing rugby with her daughter. A few of my friends have been on her team in the past and really enjoyed their experience. I was interested in joining the fun of being on April’s team, while getting wonderful photos and making memories during my senior year. April sent me the link to her application personally and I filled it out immediately. We have done two individual sessions, a family session and two team shoots. The girls on the team were from more than just Warsaw Community High School and it was fun to get to know them along with building friendships with the girls I already knew from Warsaw. I really enjoyed the two different places we were able to go and do the team shoots; The Elkhart County Fairgrounds and a local farmhouse.

What else should we know about you?
In the past four years, I have really enjoyed seeing the growth in the rugby team. As part of the rugby team, I am grateful I can help inspire my teammates both on and off the field. The bond that I share with them is unmatchable. The dedication not only to the game, but to each other has impacted my life.

Tell us more about the rugby team.
I learned about rugby my seventh-grade year through a friend who wanted to play and it interested me. However, I was not allowed to join the team until my freshman year. I love the diversity amongst the team and the fact that we have grown to almost forty players. We are a group of girls who will defend and protect each other no matter what and there is so little drama with such a large group of girls.

What is a favorite accomplishment from being on the team.

I am most proud of my personal growth on the team. Not just in learning the game, but also being able to help lead the team as a captain this year. I started off with my head in the clouds not knowing what to do exactly and now play almost the entire game, score points for my team and am able to encourage and teach new players the game.

What is the hardest part about rugby and what is the easiest?
The hardest part about rugby is the training required to be fit for the game itself. In rugby you play two 30-minute, clock running, no timeouts, hard hitting, fast paced games. You have to be both physically and mentally ready for anything.
The easiest part about rugby is the support not only from my own teammates, but also from the opposing team. We can get aggressive on the field and at the end of the day sit down and share a meal with each other.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Working with Premier Vet Services, and at Claire’s has given me real life experience. Working as the vet assistant has taught me how to communicate better with the pet owners. At Claires, I love to see the reactions of the little girls that come in as I help them to see their true beauty!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
As I was growing up I became friends with a boy who was Deaf. As I got to know him, I gained an understanding of his situation. Watching the struggles he went through, really drove me to help people. My passion is to work with children in need, such as those in the foster care system. I want to gain more knowledge of the Deaf Community as well and learn more sign language to aid with communication.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is passing Honors Zoology with a B. I really struggled with the class at first, but I was able to find a study partner who complimented my weaknesses well. We studied together for every quiz and test, and both passed the class. I am very proud of myself for putting in the work and proving to myself that I could do it.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to go on drives in the country. I love that I can crank the music up and get away from the day.

Travel Italy
Skydiving

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom and my big sister. They encourage me and help me in every way possible. They push me to be my best all the time. They are always there for me.

What should we know about you?
One thing to know about me is that I’m Latina, I'm proud of my heritage, and I love dancing, writing and reading. Writing is a great outlet for me and through reading, I’m able to learn about different people, cultures, and experiences. I started my own business over a year ago doing jewelry. I also do volunteer work. Recently I helped prepared holiday meals for families in our area and it felt really good to be able to help others going through a difficult time.

Tell us more about your heritage and culture.
My family is from Puerto Rico. I go to the island every year. I love the food, the music and the traditions, especially during the Holidays. Even though I was born in Washington, D.C., every time I go to Puerto Rico, I feel like I’m going home. People are friendly and warm and it’s a place with a great sense of community.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One thing that I hope inspires others is my determination and resilience even during difficult and challenging times. I've learned to remain focused on my goals and dreams and to keep on going even when I feel that things are not going my way or even in moments when I feel like I might not be doing good enough. I started my own business doing jewelry to help with my dance-related expenses. I also try to spend some time volunteering. Volunteering helps me realize that there are people facing really difficult and challenging times and that I have lots to be grateful for.

Tell us about Erica Land Photography.
I love to model for Erica Land Photography and to be part of the Teen Model Ambassadors Program because the program is about being the best version of yourself. Erica’s photography captures your essence, and she doesn’t want you to look or behave like anyone else. The key is just to be you. The program also gives me the opportunity to do volunteer work and meet other wonderful girls.

Tell us more about your dance experiences.
I’ve been dancing for several years and I love every minute of it. I dance different genres- ballet, modern, contemporary, hip-hop, musical theatre and more. I’ve been in dance competitions as well as dance shows, including The Nutcracker.

Photography by Erica Land Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

I feel passionate about the arts, including dance, writing and literature. I’m also very interested in topics around social justice and equality. I feel that if young people would become more interested in the arts, the world would be a better, kinder and more beautiful place.

Tell us more about why you feel this way.
I couldn’t imagine life without dancing, writing or reading books. All forms of art let you free your imagination and allow you to express different types of feelings. You also learn a lot about different cultures by listening to different types of music and by reading about different people or situations. The arts make us more tolerant to differences and more respectful of others.

Nomination: Sienna Ni has an inner strength that never ceases to amaze me. Although she struggles with an overwhelming anxiety disorder, she has learned healthy ways to manage her stress and improve her quality of life. While anxiety often affects one’s self-confidence, participating in Erica Land Photography’s Project Beauty taught Sienna to accept and trust herself. Project Beauty gave Sienna the courage and confidence to ask for help, to share with others how she feels, and to ultimately learn what true beauty really is.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would like to be interviewed about my high school Poms team. I'm surrounded by an amazing group of girls who challenge each other and help each other grow. I also want to let you know that I am passionate about Disney!

Tell us all about your Poms team.
I have been on competitive poms teams since I was in fifth grade but making my high school team was a dream come true! We practice every day except Sunday to improve our technique and run our routines. Getting to spend time with my teammates eases my school-based anxiety by giving me something to look forward to every day after school. I am so grateful for my coaches and teammates!

What are your shows like? Do you compete or perform only? Where?
We perform at our high school’s football and basketball games during half time. We also perform for the whole school during pep rallies to incite school spirit and get pumped for upcoming sports games. And at the end of our season, we compete against the other high school Poms teams at a county competition. Northwest Poms Yeah!

What is your team like? What is a favorite memory with your team?
My team has lots of fun, but we also work very hard! During practices, we encourage each other to do our best, and we praise one another when we obtain a new skill. Outside of practice, we love to spend time together as well as chat online. My favorite memory with my team was going to a haunted forest during Halloween. I was so scared the whole time, but I’ve also never laughed so hard!

Tell us about your passion for Disney. How many times have you gone? What is your favorite kingdom and why? What is your favorite ride?

I have been to Disney fifteen times since I was two years old! Disney World is my favorite place on earth! My favorite park is Magic Kingdom because no matter how many times I walk down Main Street towards Cinderella Castle, it always feels magical! My favorite Disney food is the Dole Whip, and my favorite ride is Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios.

What do you love most about Disney? Share a favorite experience you had in Disney.
There is so much I love about Disney, but if I had to say what I loved most, it would be the fireworks at Magic Kingdom. I love seeing the projections on the castle and on Main Street in the new Disney Enchantment show. It is truly magical!
My favorite experience at Disney was walking through Hollywood Studios dressed as a Resistance fighter pilot! Star Wars is my favorite franchise, so it felt very surreal to walk around Galaxy’s Edge in costume! I got quite a bit of attention that day from other park goers and cast members!

What is the most unexpected thing you've learned about/experienced in Disney?
"All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them" is one of my favorite quotes by Walt Disney. I believe dreams can come true if you put aside your fears and doubt and just go for it! Walt Disney did this, and therefore one of the most unexpected things I learned was that Walt Disney died before Disney World opened. However, his dream of Disney World still came true and continues to live on today!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
As a part of Erica Land Photography’s Teen Ambassador program, I participate in monthly volunteer activities for different organizations in our area. Our team attended CureFest in DC and held a fashion show to raise awareness for childhood cancer. I also led a backpack drive to collect backpacks and school supplies for students in need.

What leadership roles have you gotten through this experience of volunteering?
Leading volunteer activities has taught me a lot about communication, commitment, creativity, and inspiration. I have had the opportunity to lead a baby clothes drive for families in need and a backpack and school supplies drive for my fellow students. I am currently in the process of planning a volunteer activity to help my aunt and uncle’s non-profit organization called Hope’s Journey. I plan to host a Hope Tote’s Packing Party where we will fill drawstring bags filled with basic necessities for those experiencing homelessness in our community.

Why did you choose to join this team? What did you love most about it?
I chose to join Erica Land’s team because I love her energy and creativity. She always makes me feel special and encourages my passions. She lets me wear Mickey ears to all our shoots and even hosted a Star Wars themed shoot for me! I love that Erica has taught me it really means to be beautiful and confident!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk to my peers about anxiety awareness and coping mechanisms because this is a big part of my life, and I've learned that many other teenagers struggle with it too. I'd like to share my strategies and hear how others manage it as well!

My name is Riley Baumann I am 18 and I go to Brandon High School. I am a part of the Carli Ann Influencer Team and I work at Super Shakes after school. I love socializing and making new friends. I love going to Oxford and watching Ole miss baseball and football games. I enjoy hanging out with my friends, driving around while listening to country music. I also enjoy getting loaded teas and shopping at Lululemon hahaha. I also love supporting my schools’ sports teams and dressing up for the different themes.

Tell us about the Carli Ann Influencer Team. What is it? How did you find out about it and how did you get involved?
I found out about Carli’s team through one of my friends who was a part of the team last year. I messaged her about taking my photos and she asked me to be a part of her team! I’m so glad I said yes because it has been so fun! I have made so many friends and gotten amazing photos from it.

What do you love most about being on the team?
I have made friends that I would’ve never even met if I wasn’t part of the team. I love to get dressed up and be in front of the camera. Carli and the other girls make you feel so beautiful throughout the entire shoot. It has been such and fun and positive experience.

What is a favorite memory from being on the team?
My favorite memory so far has been my senior shoot. I loved it. Carli had so many fun ideas and poses for me to do. We also did a “tea party” group shoot at a park and it was so much fun to be around all the girls!

What is your job at Super Shakes and why is it an ideal after school job for you?
I absolutely love Super Shakes. My manager is always so awesome and easy to work with! He makes sure to make a schedule that works for me. If I want a day of, he makes sure I get it. The owners are also great. They are very kind and always open to new ideas. The shakes also make me want to eat heather.

Share a special memory from an Ole Miss game with us.
I have grown up going to Ole Miss games with my parents and grandparents. My grandparents live in Oxford and buy season tickets for the football and baseball games. I cherish the time I get to spend with my grandparents. My favorite memory is spending thanksgiving in Oxford with my family and then going to the Egg Bowl and Ole Miss winning.

What will you miss most about your friends and high school in general?
I think I will miss being able to just drive five minutes to my friend’s house to see them. I really starting to cherish more the time I spend with my friends because we only have one semester left. I will also miss making last minute plans to go shopping my or go out to dinner. I will miss my high school teachers and accidentally sleeping through first block.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I genuinely love people. I love my family and friends more than anything. I am not a perfect person. No one is but I think genuine love is hard to come by. I hope to one day be a travel nurse to help and inspire people around the country.

What has inspired you to be a travel nurse, and what are you doing now to prepare for this adventurous career?
My mom is a nurse and I love that she helps people every day. She is so good at what she does, and she changes people’s lives. I have always wanted to travel and help people, and this is a perfect way. I am planning to go to Ole miss and then UMMC.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I am very passionate about anti-bullying and mental health. I have suffered with bullying firsthand and it’s not fun. I think a huge part of it is the way kids in this generation are raised and what we are exposed to. Social media is a huge part of mental illness. Don’t get me wrong I love tik tok and instagram but it can lead down a dark path. Social media is a highlight reel. You see these people who you don’t even know and think they have a perfect life when they have their own struggles. Bullying and mental health are huge at our age, and I think they should be taken more seriously.

Picture
Photography by Carli Ann Photography

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I enjoy talking to older people. I always loved when my grandparents’ friends would come visit while I was around or go to church with my grandfather when I was little. I think they have so much wisdom and can teach us so much.

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to travel the world and go to places like Turks and Caicos, Australia, and Santorini, Greece.
I have always wanted to go to Hangout Festival.
I want to go see the Aurea Borealis in Iceland with my mom.

Who do you find inspiring?
My Aunt Kandy and grandmother were the two most inspiring people in my life. They have both passed away do to breast cancer. My grandmother carried herself so well and was very proper and always dressed to impress. My aunt Kandy was like no other. She loved God more than anyone I know. She also loved children and animals and was always taking care of them. They both loved her their family more than anything and would do anything for us.

Nomination & Photography by Leah Custer Photography

Arianna is specifically in the "Diploma Program" which is based around community service as well as knowledge. She has completed 5 years of Spanish and is also in a course called "Theory of Knowledge" which is also known as philosophy or critical thinking and her junior year she was a member of NHS. As you can see, she is a beautiful as well as an intelligent/caring senior who will be a leader who gives back.

Tell us more about being a Leah Custer Photography Senior Ambassador for the class of 2022. What do you do, what was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Being a Senior Ambassador for Leah Custer Photography was very rewarding in many aspects. Since February of 2021, I have been able to do mini photoshoots and post pictures onto Instagram to help spread her business. I absolutely loved working with Leah. She is such a kindhearted woman and with never having pictures done professionally before, she was able to help find the most flattering angles and positions for me. I think one thing I loved most is that when I look through the photoshoots we did this year, it can be seen how much my confidence boosted.

What has a favorite photo shoot been?
Honestly, my favorite photoshoot has probably been my most recent shoot for my senior pictures. I feel like I was the most confident and myself in this shoot. The shoot was very busy, with changing into 3 different outfits as well as finding cool spots to shoot in. My favorite picture is this one in the red dress because not only does the picture show a genuine smile, but it is one of the only pictures that I have taken with a side profile.

Picture
Photography by Leah Custer Photography

What is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program - what do you do in it and what is a favorite accomplishment from being in it?
The International Baccalaureate program, also referred to as IB, is an academic and service based program. The way I explain it is, since the program is based in Europe (which is why it is international), if I was to travel to any other country in the world, I could attend an IB school and learn the same curriculum as I am right now here in the US. I take standard core classes (English, Math, Science, History) at a slightly higher level than AP courses but also other courses such as Spanish V and Theory of Knowledge.

What else should we definitely know about you?
Something that I like for everyone to know about me is that I am Greek and Italian. I hold my faith, family root's, traditions and heritage very close to my heart. Since the 1st grade, I have been involved in Greek dancing which is run by the Greek Orthodox Church. I enjoy cooking and making many of the cultural dishes from my background. Many of my friends would say that my best attributes are being inclusive with everyone and helping others when needed.

What is your Greek dancing group like? What is a favorite memory from dancing with them?
My Greek dancing group was split into different groups, which pretty much separated the elementary school, middle school, and high school students. The people in my group became like family to me. We would practice every Sunday starting in March to lead up to the big festival, called a Glendi, in February. At times we weren’t participating in the dances, we would all go find a spot to play or get some authentic Greek food. I would say my favorite memory from dancing with them was leading my first dance. It felt like such an accomplishment and made my family proud.

Picture
Photography by Leah Custer Photography

What is a favorite dish you like to make and why?

My favorite dish to make would be lamb chops. I know it may not be appetizing to everyone, but I believe that all cultures have specific foods that may not seem “normal” to them. I first had lamb with my Yiayia (Greek for grandma) and it was paired with red potatoes, a vegetable, and sometimes spaghetti with burnt butter and mizithra cheese. This is one of many Greek foods that I enjoy. After moving to North Carolina, I don’t really see my Yiayia anymore so my dad has adopted her recipe and whenever we make it I always think of her.

What are your favorite ways to include others?
I would usually give out flyers to people that were very important to me. I would give them to teachers, friends from school, and I would try to send them to family members that did not live close to us. It was always a very big event to my family and I so we tried to get as many people involved in our heritage as possible. That was all before I had any social media.Since not living in Florida anymore, I try to go fly down for the weekend of the Glendi and invite old friends to come with.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One of my strongest values is helping those in need. Over the years I have hosted a blood drive, a toiletry drive, made lunch for the homeless, etc. To date, the time where I was most inspiring was when I hosted my own blood drive. Not only was I able to help those in need but I was able to gather people in my community for this event. It started with me handing out 500+ flyers and it resulted in a community of individuals coming together who were inspired by a 16 year old girl wanting to help others.

Picture
Photography by Leah Custer Photography
What inspired you to do a blood drive? What was the hardest thing about pulling it together and what advice would you give to someone else who wanted to do one? If you did another, what would you do the same/differently?
I remember the first time I ever gave blood at 16. It was 2 weeks after my 16th birthday, and I wanted to get involved in the medical field since I hope to be a nurse in the future. I think the hardest thing was finding a time and a place. For anyone who were to try and host one in the future is finding a spot where many people travel through and finding people who would be willing to have you host the blood bus on their property. The only thing I would do differently is find more people!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I feel passionate about and would discuss the topic of being open minded. This is one of the 7 IB learner profile traits. I have learned over the years that being open minded provides a plethora of ideas and opinions to be created and comprehended from others. This also plays a large part in forming strong bonds and relationships with others. To maintain a non-toxic relationship, you must learn to accept the differences between one another. Everyone is unique and that is a beautiful thing! This is something I pride myself on in my own personal life.

Tell us about your dance career. When did you start, how often do you practice, which dances do you study, and which is your favorite?

I started dancing when I was just four years old and have been in love with it ever since. At the current moment I am on my school dance team, and we practice 3 days a week and we have competitions on various Saturdays. My school team mainly practices Pom, which is a style of dance that requires very sharp and powerful movements. I think overall my favorite genre of dance would have to be jazz, because it is a style of dance that you can add your own texture to!

What is a favorite memory from dance, your dance team, or a dance competition?
I would have to say that my favorite memory of dance would be winning our State Competition in my sophomore year. We had all worked so hard that year, that winning state just made us all feel like all our hard work paid off and how working as a team is so much more fun than working by yourself.

We'd love for you to share what you love about photography and a favorite picture you've taken.
I love photography for the simple fact that it captures specific memories that our brain may not always remember in that level of detail. I would have to say my favorite picture would be one I had taken of my dog, “Pepper”. Pepper is a very energetic and loving dog, so sometimes it is very difficult to get a good picture of her. However, in this photo, I caught her at the perfect time, and she was smiling, looking into the sun. The reflection of sunshine hit her eyes and face in just right way! It has to be my all-time favorite.

Picture

What has been your favorite book this year to read and why?
My favorite book to read this year would have to be “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Johnathan Foer. This book is about a little boy who lost his father in the 9/11 attacks. This book is an amazing work of art in the way it shows its readers the different ways people deal with grief and how secrets can affect a family.

Tell us more about your love for animals and dedication to animal welfare and rescue.
I have always had a very tender heart for animals of every kind. So, when I see animals being abused or mistreated it absolutely breaks my heart and I will do anything and everything to help them in any way I can. So, my mother and I tend to rescue animals from bad, sometimes horrific, situations to just straight off the street, homeless or just lost. Sometimes, we even end up becoming “Foster Failures” meaning, our goal was to find a good home for an animal and we ultimately end up adopting him or her instead. For example, our cat, “Violet” who was living on top of a trash can in a very unsanitary home, with 25+ other cats, not eating, and so sick she couldn’t lift her head up, not to mention she was the runt of the pack. She is now full grown and full of life and personality.

What organization do you dedicate the most amount of time to and why do you love it so much?
The organization I have spent the most time volunteering for would be “A Paw and A Prayer” which is a dog rescue. This rescue is one of my favorites, as the wonderful lady who owns it, Judy, has created a very nice and loving “no kill” home for dogs. This is where we trust to take any dogs that we rescue.

What leadership role has been the most rewarding for you and why?
I would say being the captain of my dance team for the last 2 years. It has been the most rewarding as it has taught me such a wide variety of life lessons. Such as how being a leader doesn’t mean you have power or control over others. All it really means is that you are guiding others to be leaders themselves.

How did you find Angela Williams Photography for your senior portraits and why did you choose her for such an important milestone in your life? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I met Angela a while ago after one day when we we’re admiring her pictures of someone else we knew and then we knew that we wanted to have her take some of my dance pictures and I absolutely adore her! She took some of my dance pictures a while ago and she has taken all my pictures since. She is so fun to work with and always has the best attitude!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

I would say always spend time with the people who inspire you. Let go of the people that don’t have the same core values as you do. Lastly, as in anything and everything you do, regular practice may not make you
perfect, but it will make you the very best version of yourself!

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Sky Diving!
2. Going to Harry Potter World
3. Opening an animal rescue

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Hopefully graduating from a veterinary school of medicine or other medical
program and helping as many people/animals that I can.

Emily Bitler – Alaska
Nomination & Photography by Bee Bold Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Emily continues to push herself academically and in her 4 sports. She is a very inspiring person who loves to make those around her smile. She is a state champion in discus. She is a very compassionate and understanding person towards those around her. Overall, she as individual, is going to inspire our generation and generations to come, to continue to put in the hard work because it all pays off.

What should we definitely know about you?
I am a 4 sport athlete who maintains over a 4.0 GPA, all while having time to volunteer around my community.

Tell us about your sports.
What I love about all my sports is the fact that we get to travel all over the state. In Alaska there’s not many teams to play right down the road so sometimes we have to fly or drive 6 hours and that’s what makes them the most fun and it’s the time to really bond with everyone.
I play a middle in volleyball, and I’ve only played for two years. I would say traveling to Valdez is my favorite memory. Valdez is such a fun place for all sports and the girls just made it extra fun.
I love cheering everyone does. How we have a cheer for every point.
I am mainly a post player in basketball, but I play all positions. My greatest accomplishment is winning an award during every tournament and always being able to reach my goals, whether it be getting so many rebounds or points. I really enjoy the fact that I can get really aggressive in this sport. Especially being a post, I can really show what I’m made of.
I am a pitcher in softball but sometimes I play third or wherever is needed. My greatest accomplishment in this sport is the fact that I hit the very first over the fence home run for my school. I really love all the girls on softball. They all make the sport so much more fun, and the coaches are just amazing.
I compete in discus for track. And the greatest thing I have done for that is winning 1st in both regions and state.

Picture

What has your favorite class been this year and why?
My favorite class this year is stuck between my Architectural Drafting class or Construction Trades. I love being able to build things and in Drafting I get to see all the small parts and design things, while in Construction I get to put ideas to life.

What volunteer activities do you do in your community? Which has been your favorite and why?
I volunteer in my community block parties with helping set up and take down, I also volunteer around my family’s church, picking up trash on the side of the road and cleaning up the building. My favorite volunteering activity has to be Recycle. I get to do it once a month and I help people understand the importance of recycle and help them put the right containers in the right bins.

What volunteer activity has awarded you with the greatest leadership role? What was it, what did your duties entail, and what did you learn from it?
Recycling has awarded me with the greatest leadership role. I get to take responsibility of opening and closing the transfer site, and I get to instruct people on how and where to put their items. I have learned how to communicate with different people and what different people require. I have become much more of a people person and more comfortable with talking to different people by participating in this activity.

Picture

What was your senior portrait experience like with Bee Bold Photography? What did you love most about it and what did you find most surprising?
My senior portrait experience was absolutely amazing. Bee Bold Photography was so personable and made it so easy to get the pictures taken. I had no idea what to do or what poses to do, and she made it seem so easy and so natural and it was a blast. What I loved most about the experience was the fact that she made me laugh all the time and that it felt like we were friends and not just me hiring her. I was very surprised with how easy it was to work with her.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
How I am myself without worrying about anyone’s options. With being involved in so many things such as my sports and academics I face discrimination with being an out gay women. With all the bullying I still play on, study hard, and help my community.

Picture

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I don’t have just one passion in which I could go on about. I spread my love and passion throughout everything I do. I could share my passion for gay equality while at the same time I could converse about horses. On top of that I have become very knowledgeable of celiac disease and gastro paresis. I could go on about many thinks that I do in life, and I am constantly learning something knew in which I grow to have a passion for and knowledge of.

Lily Renfrew

12/10/2021

Picture

Lily Renfrew - Michigan
Nomination by Michelle Renfrew
Photography by Hayley Hamlin Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lily has always been involved in athletics. She was training as a gymnast 25+ hours a week but had to stop training due to injuries at the end of her freshman year of high school. Lily transitioned to pole vault, found success, then broke her ankle requiring surgery to place hardware in her ankle. She competed her first year as a junior in high school (with the hardware in her ankle) due to COVID, won regionals, and placed 13th in D1 states. Lily has done this while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. Lily has continued to participate in leadership groups/activities at school, maintain a part time job, and is the yearbook editor in chief at Okemos High School.

Picture
Photography by The Lansing State Journal

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would like to be interviewed about my injury during my sophomore year of high school. I want to elaborate more on the struggle after surgery, along with the success I had the next season with 9 screws and 2 plates in my ankle.

Tell us more about your sophomore year and the injury you went through.
I started pole vaulting the summer going into my sophomore year of high school. Track season was about a month away when I experienced a fluke injury when I broke and dislocated my ankle. This injury required 9 screws and 2 plates on both sides of my ankle, which remained for almost 2 years. After surgery, it cut the remainder of my season short, and I was unable to train or compete until my junior year.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I was a high-level gymnast for about 8 years until I had to stop due to a back injury. This sport taught me discipline and improved my time management skills. The decision was difficult, but I transitioned quickly to pole vault. In my first year competing I won regionals and was able to qualify for the state championships. I plan to further my education in college and hope to continue pole vaulting in college as well.

Picture
Photography by Hayley Hamlin Photography

Share with us how you transitioned into pole vaulting and the struggles you went through.
For me, pole vault was the easiest transition from my extensive gymnastics training. Unfortunately, I experienced a traumatic ankle injury in February of 2020, which required me to relearn the body mechanics of pole vaulting with hardware in my ankle. I was able to begin training again in August of 2020, which was similar to when I first started pole vault in August of 2019. I began competing in March of 2021.

What was it like having so much success after so many setbacks?
Having success was a humbling experience that I appreciate and I’m grateful for the support from my coaches, teammates, and family. The setbacks I experienced have given me the drive to become an even better athlete and pursue pole vaulting at a collegiate level.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers I would talk about pole vault. I love the sport and wish I knew about it sooner. A lot of people don't learn about this sport until middle school or high school and I hope that can change in the future. If younger kids start earlier and find a passion for it, they will be able to excel much faster than I was able to.

What do you want others to know about pole vault?
Pole vault is more than jumping over a stick. It requires speed, coordination, athleticism, and most of all timing. All of these combined (with good weather) make for a successful pole vaulter. The running, the timing, and the vaulting in the air when you are 11 feet high (hopefully higher someday) is exhilarating.

Why did you choose Hayley Hamlin as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Hayley Hamlin as my senior photographer because both of my sisters used her as well. I was familiar with her so we went with it. Hayley makes your senior photoshoot about you, your style, and your interests. Hayley makes it a senior experience like no other.

Tell us more about the leadership positions you have had in your school. Which has been your favorite and why?
I have enjoyed being a Connect Leader and Yearbook Editor in Chief at Okemos High School. Both leadership roles have provided different experiences. As a Connect leader my role is to work with a select group of freshmen throughout their first year of high school. Our responsibilities are to introduce the students to the high school experience, communicate with them to provide support and encouragement by calling, texting, leaving notes, leaving treats, meeting with them, and most of all being a friend.

Picture
Photography by Hayley Hamlin Photography

What do your duties entail as Yearbook Editor in Chief and why does this position suit you?
As the Editor in Chief I am responsible for creating the cover and all 250 pages in the book. I have a staff of 20 students who help create the book for our high school student body. I teach the staff how to take photos, prepare layouts, interview students, and sell business ads to offset the cost of our book. I also have to allow the staff to use their own creativity on their assigned pages. I also complete the final edits on pages, and work with our advisor to assure the final product highlights students, staff, clubs, activities, sports, and inclusivity of our student body.

Alina Parikh

Picture

Alina Parikh - Maryland
Nomination by Divya Parikh
Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Alina Parikh is an inspiring teen. Besides being a good student and an athlete, she showed a lot of her talent and strength during the first year of the pandemic. She learned to cook, train a puppy, and tons of DIY while attending and adjusting to virtual school in quarantine. She’s innately funny and exudes a kind smile for everyone. Most importantly she is a trusted and loyal friend. She includes everyone and avoids groups who do not. She embraces being a young Indian American teen balancing her Indian culture -connecting many generations of family - and through celebrating the myriad of cultures in her community.

What sport/s do you participate in? What is your favorite and why? What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from that sport?
I have been playing sports since I was 4 years old. I swam and dove, played basketball in the winter, did karate, and played tennis. The one sport I stuck with through all these years is soccer. What I enjoy most is the friends I’ve made along the way. A favorite memory I have was winning our first tournament a few years ago. We were all so excited and happy. My love for soccer has opened me up to trying new sports in the future.

What is your favorite thing to cook and why?
I love to bake! Over quarantine, we couldn’t go out so one of my favorite activities was learning to make foods we like to eat from scratch, and I discovered baking is my favorite. I make all kinds of cakes and find new ways to decorate them. I look for new recipes on Pinterest and like trying them out. I enjoy making chocolate chip, sugar, and snickerdoodle cookies.

How was puppy training? Tell us more about that - and your puppy!
Like many families, my family rescued a black lab mix. We named her Princess Leia because our family has always enjoyed watching Star Wars. Unlike a lot of other dogs, my puppy is a little crazy. She jumps and wants to chase a ball constantly, and her bark makes the walls shake. Even with months of training, she seems to have her own mind. She listens to my mom the most but there are some tricks I’ve taught her that she does really well. I love her and cannot imagine my life without her anymore.

What was your favorite ‘Do It Yourself’ project during COVID?
I learned how to make a lot of things naturally and from scratch that are good for my health and easy to do. I made scented bath scrub free of chemicals and dyes with coconut oil, cane sugar and dehydrated fruit. I made make-up setting spray, learned how to do nail designs on myself and others and a bunch of art projects.

What is a tradition or celebration in your Indian culture that means a lot to you and why?

Being part of traditional Indian weddings is one of my favorite celebrations. They are colorful, big, loud and fun for everyone. There’s tons of food and dancing! The whole family is involved, and the guests are like family. There are so many different days of celebrations, by the end you feel so close to everyone. Everything is so different from other cultural celebrations that it feels so special to be a part of something like this.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would want to be asked 'at your age what is beauty?' There are specific beauty standards that everyone is trying to meet. But I think beauty is in our differences. It's what makes you who you are and how you acknowledge and express it is what I find beautiful. It goes beyond skin color, hair texture, and other physical traits. It's those qualities that aren't always obvious to the eye, but you find it in how someone makes you laugh or feel. Everyone's natural beauty is expressed in their own unique way.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Pre-COVID, I was trying really hard to keep up with my friends who hoped to become popular even if it hurt others. I know what it feels like to be excluded. It's taught me to aspire to be who I believe I should be instead of what society might be telling me to become. Instead of worrying about how much everyone likes me I hope that by making a few deep friendships with core friends and by supporting them I inspire others to find their own way and not just worry about what a few think is the way to be.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The title would be "why are you racing through the final years of your childhood?" When you're 13, you want to be 16. When you're 16, you want to be 21. When you're over 21, you're trying to go back to those carefree years where you didn't have to worry about as many responsibilities and the lost opportunity of spending those years racing to be an adult. Make the most of each age. Instead of worrying about what impresses everyone, enjoy your teen years at each age you are.

Tell us about being on Erica Land Photography's model team and why you joined. What has your experience been like? What do you love most about it?
I wanted to join the teen ambassadors because the girls on the team represent qualities I believe in. When I saw Erica’s pictures on Instagram, I felt like they showed an important personal trait of each girl. Some dance, others play sports or are artists, and each girl could express who they are at this moment captured in the way they would like to be represented. I also appreciate the community service opportunities we’ve had as a group to help those in need, cancer charities, and other ways to support our city.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t let people’s opinions influence you. People may try to bring you down to make themselves feel better. Don’t take their flattery too seriously either. Your worth is not equal to the number of likes on social media. Do what you want think is best for you despite what others may think because that will only make you stronger and more confident. Be yourself and make the best out of any situation.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I will be 18 and be looking into getting accepted in a good college and study something I love. I would like to continue modeling and study to become something that allows me to work with people (not at a computer all day). I might go into nursing or healthcare because I want what I do to help others in a positive way.

3 Things on your bucket list:
I would love to travel all over the world and experience other cultures. I hope to travel to every continent (except Antarctica because I’m not a fan of extreme cold).
I would like to learn sign-language.
I would like to scuba dive in clear waters with no sharks.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom inspiring because I would not be who I am without her. She’s my friend and someone who is there for me no matter what. My mom inspires me because she is smart, pretty, organized, funny, she knows how to solve problems and she’s there for everyone. I aspire to be like her one day.

Jaedyn Clemons

Picture

Jaedyn Clemons - Florida
Nomination & Photography by Gwen Darrey / Images by G
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jaedyn Clemons is inspiring; the strength, grace and poise she possesses while working with raptors, including the American Bald Eagle is most impressive. Jaedyn Clemons is a recent graduate of a homeschool program that has provided her with the flexibility to serve as both a veterinary assistant and a volunteer for endangered bird sanctuaries. Jaedyn Clemons has logged many hours working with endangered birds and has a passion for Raptors; She especially loves working with Thunder, an American Bald Eagle.
Picture

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would love to be interviewed about my work with training non-releasable birds of prey. I began with holding Screech Owls to now training Bald Eagles! It is very important to me that every animal I help train is trained by positive reinforcement and force-free methods; meaning, each animal has the choice to participate in training sessions, leading to positive relationships with their trainers.

The sanctuary I volunteer at is very big on “ecotherapy”, in which birds help provide healing, particularly for veterans with PTSD. Our birds remind them that they are not alone with their disabilities. I have worked extensively with veterans and frequently bring eagles to events that honor them.

Another passion of mine is teaching others about endangered birds and how they can make a difference at home to save them. I have assisted in educational programs across west Florida and reach 250,000+ people annually!

Picture
Photography by Gwen Darrey / Images by G

How did you get started and how often do you train with them?

I got started training birds of prey by volunteering when I turned 14. I spend nearly every weekend with the birds!

Have you ever been in a scary situation with one and if so, how did you get past it to keep working with that one and others?
Yes, I’ve been in many scary situations with the birds, including having to get my lower eyelid glued after a bite! People often forget that just because they’re in a sanctuary, they are still wild animals. A bird who seems sweet will always have the possibility of hurting you. As a trainer, you must recognize this. You shouldn’t be afraid of them, but you should never let your guard down.

What has been a favorite experience doing this?
I’ll never forget when I got to attend a 9/11 remembrance ceremony with Sarge, a Bald Eagle I train. On a sad day, she brought so much life and grace to the ceremony. Everyone loved her and I even got to take pictures with the Governor of Florida with her!

Is this a career you are planning on going into and if so, what specifically?
Yes! I plan on being an avian zookeeper/trainer and leading a zoo’s education team!

Picture
Photography by Jessica Clemons

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
When I am not with the birds, I am a dance teacher at a studio where I was once a student. I love teaching the next generation of dancers! In addition to dance skills, I also incorporate lessons about kindness, patience, helpfulness, and teamwork into my classes.

Why did you choose Gwen Darrey / Images by G for your photographer? What did you love most about it?
I chose Gwen as my photographer because I wanted my photos to be genuine and imperfect. I loved how even if I thought a pose felt strange or awkward, she would assure me it looked good. Then, I’d look at the pictures and end up loving it!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever accomplished was learning to handle Sarge, the first Bald Eagle I ever worked with. I was persistent and never gave up, even when I felt like a bad handler or she was having a bad day and acting out (yes, birds can have bad days too!).

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Nothing worth having comes easy. You have to be diligent and work hard!

Picture
Photography by Jessica Clemons

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I hope to be an Avian Zookeeper/Trainer and Educational Leader at a zoo! I want to train birds of prey and educational animals for shows that inspire guests!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to play my guitar and ukulele! Music was my first passion before birds and I find it very healing.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can bounce my nose like a bunny!

3 Things on your bucket list
1: Train a Steller’s Sea Eagle (one of the largest eagles!).
2: Travel across the world and see animals in their natural habitats.
3: Have a farm with rescued cows, horses, goats, and parrots!

Who do you find inspiring?
Taylor Swift is very inspiring to me. She handles hate with such grace and poise and has an amazing way with words.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe in spreading kindness and making a positive impact on the world. I aspire to always leave people happier than when I found them!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am so thankful to be able to spread my love for birds and animals with so many amazing readers!

Alexis Wong

Alexis Wong – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Allen David Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Alexis Wong is a junior in High School and is proud to be of mixed races. Currently, Alexis is highly involved with theatre; performing as a theatre technician and as an actress. Other hobbies include learning about other cultures, cars, video games, art, and of course MODELING!! After high school, Alexis plans to attend college and pursue a career in law enforcement with the FBI or CIA. Never taking no for an answer, rising to every challenge and taking on even the toughest assignments, that's what makes her an Inspiring Teen!

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am currently taking three AP classes. I am the Junior Acting VP for my high school’s thespian troupe. I just took on the position of Assistant student director for our upcoming production of Millie. In addition, I am also a member of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors society. You know what they say: “Be cool, stay in school!”

That's a lot of responsibility! Which is your favorite AP Class vs which one do you spend the most time studying for?
Thanks! This is a tough question to answer...hopefully my teachers don't hold it against me. All of the classes require a lot of time to study, but AP Bio is the most time-consuming because of the memorization in addition to the concepts. My favorite class is by far AP Chemistry. My teacher is very entertaining and I love the subject. AP Stats is in between the two.

Picture

What does your job entail as Junior Acting VP of your thespian troupe?
I help create and organize events for our theater group to sponsor at school. These have included our first ever Back to School Theater Camp, Karaoke night, and Halloween movie night. All of this is so that other students can have the opportunity to participate in fun activities and step outside of their comfort zone if they dare, and perhaps try a theater class in the future.

As student director, what do you feel will be the hardest part of your role?
Based on past productions, Tech week is very chaotic and my directors have always seemed the most stressed during that time. I expect during that week I will find out what will be the hardest part of my role.

What has been your favorite production to participate in and why?
This is easy! Nevermore was my favorite production to participate in for multiple reasons. It was a small cast for our 2021 UIL competition. I love competition, and so does our theater group. We became like a family during a time that "normal" life seemed so far out of reach. We had fun and still have fun together.

Picture

What do you do in Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor's Society and what is one of your favorite accomplishments?

Since I am a new member of Mu Alpha Theta I will be able to start coaching middle school Math teams in the Spring semester. Always up to a challenge, this sounds fun and I will fit volunteer time into my schedule. My favorite accomplishment actually seems odd but relates to Math. I was accepted into the TAMS program at UNT Denton, however, I decided to decline because I realized that my passion is to be in theater, while still doing my best in my academics.

Tell us more about modeling for Allen David Photography.
I began in May so I am new to modeling. Of the three shoots I have been in, I cannot pick a favorite because I think they are all great! We are on a set schedule; it is go, go, go! David knows exactly where he wants us to be and at what specific time to get those perfect shots.

Picture

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I am a full-believer that students should get involved with at least one extra-curricular activity. I have been in sports, music, and obviously my biggest passion – theater! Each and every activity has introduced me to new groups of friends and made me more comfortable when starting new schools. I think being involved and having those relationships has helped me become worthy of the Inspiring Teens nomination.

Elizabeth Choe - Michigan
Nomination & Photography by Capture Studios Photography
Issue 51 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Elizabeth is one of the most genuine seniors I have photographed in my many years of shooting seniors. An honor student, Elizabeth studied in South Korea during her Junior year in High School. She was active in clubs and activities and taught English to elementary children during her year abroad. She is active in sports and volunteers for school activities in her home school in the US. Her aspirations are to work in international relations/diplomacy in a non governmental capacity. She has applied to The University of Michigan and Wisconsin.

Mari Maloney speaks highly of you. What was your experience like at your senior portrait session? What did you love most about it?
I’ve known Mari for a long time, which definitely made the whole session a lot more fun and memorable. I can be a little camera shy, but Mari was patient with me and we joked around to make the experience less awkward. Once I became more comfortable, we started experimenting with different locations and poses that I wouldn’t have thought of on my own.
I not only enjoyed the experience as a whole, but am especially thankful to Mari for pushing me to come out of my shell and giving me the best experience I could’ve had.

Picture

What was it like once you got to South Korea? What did you find most surprising? What did you love most about your experience there?
I had visited Korea a couple of times when I was younger, but those visits weren’t comparable to my experience living and going to school there. What I found the most surprising was how nice and helpful the people around me were. I found that everyone I encountered, English speaking or not, were always willing to help me out. Going off of this, my favorite part of living abroad was being able to make friends with and build connections with people that I never had the chance to back in my hometown.

What is a favorite memory from South Korea?
Looking back at my time in Korea, I would say that my favorite moment was when my older siblings came to spend time with my parents and I. During the last month I was there, my siblings flew in to spend the week with us. Since my siblings are both in college and I was living abroad, we rarely saw each other. I was able to show them around and share some of my favorite places and things to do that were unique to Korea, which made the whole experience more meaningful.

What sports do you play and which is your favorite? Why?
For my entire middle school and most of my time in high school, I was on the school and travel volleyball teams and also ran track. I first got into volleyball not only because most of my friends were playing, but also because the dynamics of the sports were interesting to me. After playing for a couple of seasons, I realized that I like the team aspect of volleyball the most. Winning something as an individual is rewarding, but as cliche as it may sound, I think being able to share that experience with other people is more worthwhile.

What school activities do you volunteer for?
I have been a member of a variety of clubs. I have been a member of Key Club and a mentor for underclassmen for several years. While I was in Korea, I was a member of Global Issues Network and Bridge Publisher. Both of these clubs gave me the opportunity to dive deeper into specific global issues, rather than focusing solely on my community. Through these clubs, I’ve been able to interact with people from all walks of life.

What one did you have the biggest leadership role in? Tell us more about that.
In Bridge Publisher, I was responsible for creating English lesson plans for elementary kids who didn’t have easy access to ESL materials. On the weekends I would spend time with them teaching the lessons I created and playing games. This club was more demanding in terms of responsibility compared to other clubs I’ve been a part of, but it was definitely the most rewarding.

Picture
Photography by Capture Studios Photography
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination briefly mentions my passion for helping people, but I would like to elaborate further on this. As the youngest in my family, I’ve always had my siblings to look up to. Within my academic community, I noticed that the academic shortcomings of students aren't an issue of academic skill, rather the absence of support from a meaningful role model. As a result, I joined my school’s mentorship program in 8th grade, and have been a member ever since. Through this program, I help motivate fellow students by teaching them positive habits that translate to life outside of school.

What else should we definitely know about you?
I’ve always been interested in understanding how people interact with each other and how perspectives differ from person to person. I believe that making connections with others is one of the most powerful things we can do. That being said, I try my best to establish some sort of common ground with a vast variety of people and build relationships with them. Through diplomacy, I can do this on a global scale and collaborate with others to solve issues.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I’ve always been passionate about food. Despite the fact that I’m not the most talented cook in the kitchen, I’ve always enjoyed learning about new cuisines and the culture behind food. The idea that draws me the most toward food is the romanticized concept of sharing a meal. It has the ability to bring different people together and engage in meaningful conversations. Eating together lets people press pause on life and take the time to enjoy the company of those they love.

What food/s do you love to cook the most and why?
I wouldn’t call myself an amazing cook, however, there are a couple of foods that I really enjoy cooking. My favorite food to cook is pasta because it’s relatively easy to make and doesn’t really have a lot of restrictions. Pasta is something that anyone can make and enjoy. As someone with a huge sweet tooth, making desserts is also something I really enjoy doing. The creative element found in pasta can also be found in making desserts. Whether it’s trying out a new recipe or decorating, baking gives you a certain degree of freedom that isn’t the same with other foods.
