Kirsten Patterson – Michigan
Nomination & Photography by Kara Crandall Photography
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kirsten Patterson is an amazing young lady that has a love and passion for our country. This photo shoot was what she describes as her personality shining through for her patriotism for the USA. She is currently planning on moving to Texas after she completes her senior year to become a "lineman" doing a job that many people wouldn't want to do. She is involved in school activities and sports. In her downtime, she works two jobs.

How did you find and why did you choose Kara Crandall Photography as your photographer?
I met Kara through a family member. My niece dances and Kara was able to take some amazing pictures of her. I began to look into her for my senior pictures when I found the application for her Senior Model Team. It was the best decision I made because I met not only an amazing photographer but also an amazing person, inside and out!

Tell us about planning the different ideas for your shoot, including the flag one shown here.
Most of the shoot ideas are Karas. I just put on my clothes and show up. She has some amazing places that she uses and her eye for the right picture is crazy talented. The flag shoot was for the 4th of July and the Flag I have in the pictures was the first American Flag that I flew on my truck.

What was your senior photoshoot experience like? What did you love most about it?
Me and Kara laughed a lot because she would say where to go and start to tell me a good pose. I would immediately do what she was thinking and all she could say was “YES! Yes!”. I pointed out I really must be a mind reader. My favorite part was when it started to completely pour but we didn’t want the camera to get wet. I played in the rain and she still kept taking pictures on her phone!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

Out of everything I do I would say the most inspiring thing about me is my career/dream. I want to be that out of the ordinary person. In physics class when we did the electricity unit everything just made sense. So with that I want to become a Journeyman Lineman, taking after my Dad.

Tell us something about being a lineman that most people may not realize.
Something that people really don’t realize is how heavy all of the gear and safety equipment is about 40 lbs. So not only do you carry your own weight around but also the weight equivalent to a 5-Gallon water jug.

What else should we know about you?
I am definitely not the typical girl. I love to work hard, get dirty, and support our country. I am about to start my second year in the school's energy program and cannot wait! I love country music, especially Zach Bryan. I drive a truck named Duke. Duke is my absolute best friend. My friends love to say I am very outgoing, stubborn, and not scared to try new things

What is your school's energy program, and what does being involved in it entail on your end?
I attend the Out of District Energy Program meaning that I drive to the high school a town over 4 days of the week. In the program I have learned about many sides of the energy industry. Including Renewable energy, Wiring a house, and Motors. Those are just some examples of what we learn in a year. When taken as a second year they help to get you in an apprenticeship or internship. Along with that I was the only female in that class.

What leadership role have you had in this organization?
With the multiple projects we have some are individual and some are group. One of the group projects I was assigned as the foreman. Meaning the leader. I had to make sure we had all our materials, assignments, and everyone did their part.

What is your favorite Zach Bryan song and why?
My favorite song from Zach Bryan is off his album “Deann” released in 2019. The title is “Letting Someone Go”. I have lost a lot of people and friends. It talks about how much it hurts when having to watch the people that you thought would always be there go. Mentally, physically, or both.

When did you get Duke? Tell us about it - we'd love to see a pic of you with it too!
I got Duke last year around June. He was originally supposed to be a parts truck but we then got him up and running. We swapped his bed out, I bought new rims for him, and put in a cow print headliner! His name is based off the TV show and movie series “The Dukes of Hazzard”. He even has an instagram! @duke.hazzard09

What are your favorite things to do with your friends?
Sit around the bonfire with music playing. We are always so tired by the time the sun goes down that we all laugh at anything you say to us.

What is a favorite memory from this summer?
As a Christmas present my Ma bought her and I tickets to the Buckeye Country Superfest in Ohio where I got some of my favorite artists including Zach Bryan and Luke Combs! I have never had so much fun. My Ma even said she could tell how much fun I had by my refusing to sit down.

What are you most excited about going back to school for?
Honestly school was my strong suit until we got to high school, then it turned out school is not my thing. Now I am just excited to be a part of the best student section in the state, be a senior, and walk across that stage.

What is a favorite family tradition that you hope never ends?
It started more recently but every year my family and our friend go camping for Labor Day weekend which is also my Dad’s birthday. Last year we added to that tradition with an annual corn hole tournament.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would choose the topic of why college isn't for everyone. This is because I feel that in public schools, they push college or schooling of some sort onto everyone. But in reality, it is not for everyone. Blue collar jobs almost never require schooling. These are the jobs that are the backbone of the country and without them you wouldn't be sitting where you are today.

Reagan Buffa

Picture

Reagan Buffa – Pennsylvania
Nomination by Caryl Buffa
Photography by Regina Gutierrez Photography
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Reagan Buffa is inspiration every day. Sometime this year she suffered a spinal fracture, but it was months later that it was realized. This was due to her positive attitude of not giving up or giving in. Though suffering she participated in her school dance team, dance company, dance classes and school. No one knew the pain and hardship she endured because she always faced each day with a smile on her face. Even once diagnosed her positivity looked towards when she could dance again. Between her positive attitude and willingness to do her best she is a daily inspiration.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love sharing knowledge with people, whether it is helping a friend in class or teaching a younger dancer a move. I assist dance classes of younger ages and I help children grow in their dance journey. I love that I can be viewed as this positive role model in their life, and I take pride in knowing that I help someone learn to love dance, the same way I was taught.

What would you like to talk about?
Probably my love for teaching dance and my dance journey. I have worked hard to get where I am, and I would be happy to share my experience.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
If I had the opportunity, I would probably talk about how important it is to take a step back and reflect on your emotions. Covid hit as I was wrapping up my freshman year of high school, and now suddenly I am about to graduate in a year. Being able to talk about how I felt during these difficult years was a way I was able to get through it, and I feel like other teenagers with similar experiences could relate.

Kate Crawford Shepherd – Mississippi
Nomination & Photography by
All in a Memory Photography/Melissa Presley
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kate Crawford inspires so many with her walk with Christ. She is on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team at her school where she helps coordinate community outreach as well as regular student devotion times. Kate Crawford just recently returned from a mission trip to Perdenales, Dominican Republic where she helped provide medical assistance to families in need as well as evangelized.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Since I was a little girl, my passion has been all things hair, makeup, and fashion! I am now a free-lance hair and makeup artist for special events in central Mississippi, where I live. Helping others feel loved and beautiful is the reason I’m so passionate about being a free-lance artist.

What would you like to talk about?
As stated in my nomination, I just recently returned from a mission trip in Pedernales, Dominican Republic. While in Pedernales, I provided medical assistance and evangelism to the people there. I would love to share my experience and the way the Lord worked in and through me to glorify His kingdom!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?

Ava Bains

8/9/2022

Picture

Ava Bains – Colorado
Nomination & Photography by
Everyday Moments Photography
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ava may be beautiful on the outside, but her heart is where her true beauty lies. Ava says YES to life and life in FULL COLOR every single day. Her successes in school and in the pool as a competitive swimmer are inspiring. Yet what is most impressive about Ava is her ability, in this social media world full of pressures, to rise above negativity and SMILE in the face of difficulty. Ava's goal is ALWAYS inclusivity/acceptance at school and in the pool, even when she faces struggles-she pushes through working to unify all around her-Now THAT is inspiring!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination letter talks about character which my parents taught me is the most important thing when it comes to who you are as a person. I just finished my freshman year of high school and ended with a 3.92 GPA while juggling six days a week of swim practice. Swimming has always been a huge part of my life. The past year I set a goal to get a sectional cut which I accomplished in June. These accomplishments are important, but your character is what propels a person to their personal best and successes that can be measured.

What would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about social media as it is a big part of our generation and I feel right now there’s a lot of negativity and bad examples displayed there. I think what Inspiring Teens Magazine is trying to do is inspire kids like me, who don’t necessarily feel like they have a strong voice or are nervous to speak up, to do just that. I’d like to talk about how you see your role as this magazine to positively impact the teenagers on social media and if our goals align.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
A topic I’d like to start conversations with my peers about is the general idea of how social media looks. I feel like a lot of kids don’t feel accepted on social media and the “influencers“ of our generation often do not help and kids, like me, just end up feeling more isolated. I want to find my voice and stand up to make social media a safe and welcoming place and I want to encourage my peers to do the same. I’d like to lead our generation to make the world (and social media) a better, more welcoming place.

Nomination: Allison loves to dance, lift, run, and have fun! She’s so comfortable with the camera, her confidence is outstanding and inspires others. She always has a smile on her face and makes everyone laugh. She has an awesome relationship with her father and her companions. Allison wants to peruse her dream as a model and also wants to work in the medical field, she is super smart and always has a plan!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I feel like my nomination covers mainly everything! I would like to add my passion for inspiring others to come out of the crowd and become a model themselves! Modeling takes confidence and I feel like every soul should have an awesome self-image.

What would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about the times I’ve been published, my story about how I was bullied all my life and finally stepped up and became successful!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about how important mental health is. Mental health should be more recognized. Everyone has a voice; everyone should be heard.

Ida Sheldon

Picture

Ida Sheldon - Virginia
Nomination & Photography by Suebee Sheldon
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ida began tap dancing at the age of three. Ida works in and out of class, constantly working out new tap combinations and working to improve other dance styles. This past year she was the first ever from our studio to have her solo place in the top 20 at Nationals. She aspires to bring her love for tap dance to others through performance and as a teacher/choreographer. Ida sets goals and doesn't stop until she achieves them. Ida is kind and generous. Ida is my hero.
Picture
Photography by Dancemakers Inc
What are the roots of tap dance?
For the past year I have been working with Jalen from @taptitanstoday on Instagram, and he has taught me so much about the African American Roots of Tap Dance. American Slave owners took away percussion instruments from the slaves. The slaves had used the drums to communicate with each other, so they took to doing percussion with their feet and used tap dance as both a form of communication and expression. Later, white men decided to exploit these tap dancers and brought it to the stage for entertainment. Bill Robinson, known as “Bojangles” is known as the father of American tap dance. He was from Richmond, VA and you can find a statue of him there.

How do the different types of dance benefit you?
Ballet – Ballet is the base for all other types of dance. It teaches you proper technique and builds strength
Jazz- Jazz has helped me strengthen my tap performances by exploring moving all parts of my body, not just my feet!
Tap – Helps with rhythm and musicality
Modern – explores self-expression and even more different body movements
All different types of dance can benefit you in different ways, these are the ones that I know best.

Tell us about your trip to Nationals.
Our studio always goes to Nationals with Dancemakers Inc. in Myrtle Beach, S.C. I always look forward to the week, especially when they have the “Making Noise” tap class! I performed with my team and took classes. My solo was called “Club Nine” and can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/suebeesuebee/videos/446335017316365/

What was your favorite part about the trip?
I would say the last day. That entire day felt like a party, even after a tiring week of dancing and competing for up to 8 hours each day. Also, performing in the Wrap It Ceremony at Dancemakers Inc. Nationals with everyone was one of the most amazing experiences that I have ever had! Also, I got my hair cut really short for the first time, like, ever! We can never have it really short because of all our dances, so right after my last dance this year my mom took me to get it cut. I love it and will grow it out before our first dance performance in January.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
Placing 16th at Nationals this year!! I am very proud to represent my studio in being the first from Linda Watkins School of Dance to place in the top 19, and to make my teachers proud.

What is a favorite memory from dance?
I have a lot of wonderful memories, but one that comes to mind was when I performed my first duo at Nationals "Moses Supposes" with Cara Wardell. I think it was one of the first times that I had really enjoyed and connected with a dance. After performing it, I was in tears because I was so happy. I will never forget that.

What do you think non dancers don't realize about dance?
How much strength that you have to build up to do ballet, as well as jazz and tap and all of the other styles. Ballerinas are STRONG! - It’s not all about tutus!

Tell us about your farm.
I love my farm! It is not a very large farm, but we do have quite a few chickens. We currently have goats that we used to milk, but we are taking a break from that this year. When we begin milking again, we are planning to make soap and butter. My parents have a huge garden, and they can and freeze as much veggies as possible. My sister has 3 pet ducks, and we have Anatolian Shepards that guard the chickens, goats and ducks from coyotes, bears and other critters that come in the night!

Where do you sell the eggs and how often?
I sell eggs to neighbors and my mom's friends on Facebook. We just ordered labels for my business "Ida's Pretty Little Layers" and in the future I will be selling them at "Grateful Produce" - the new local produce store that opened here on Bent Mountain! Sometimes my chickens decide to sit on a nest and steal all my eggs so that they can hatch babies, so they interrupt my cash flow!

What did you love most about assistant teaching dance?
The kids. I love watching them learn and grow as they go. Especially when I start with the little ones. Being there to help them through that is something that I will always be grateful to Linda Watkins School of Dance for providing me with the opportunity to assistant teach as I plan to teach when I get older.

Tell us about your favorite drawing. We'd love to see a picture of it too!
Unfortunately, my absolute favorite drawings were in a sketch book that I lost on one of my dance trips! I have attached one

What is a unique way you mix and match clothes? Photo please!
I love to mix darks and lights and different patterns.

What is your family like?
We have a farm with a lot of animals, so there is always something interesting going on - sometimes more than we'd like! Our house is a fixer-upper and so our life is a bit chaotic at times, especially with mine and my sisters' schedules - but there is always so much love.

What is a memory with them that you'll never forget?
Camping and Rock Climbing with Family Friends. I was 10 years old and got scared near the top and everyone cheered me on until I got up there. Then it got super cold and we told stories and roasted marshmallows are a fire.

Picture
Ida Sheldon - This was my favorite memory with her and the camera

What do you love most about having your mom as your personal professional photographer?
HaHaHa Paparazzi! Lol, sometimes she drives me a little crazy with photos (she knows this!), but seriously she taught herself and practiced on us and so whenever we need anything – she takes the photos. Or she will barter photography to help pay for things, and all of her earning go towards my dance and travel expenses.

What has a favorite experience with her and the camera been?
My sister has a deficient immune system because of a severe run-in with Lyme disease. This happened right before Covid hit, and so when it came time for dance photos with our studio, my mom felt it would be safer for her if we stayed away from crowds a little longer. She took us to our neighbor’s property, which has the most amazing mountain and sunset views, and we did my photos there. An adult dancer friend came and helped pose me, and then we all sat on blankets and watched the sun set over the mountain.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Keep dreaming. Not everything will go your way but keep searching for opportunities and work hard and you will get where you want to be.

Picture
Ida Sheldon - An updated photo, with a mixed and matched outfit and my short short haircut!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I am still exploring my options, but I am hoping to continue performing, I would like to learn to choreograph, and I have always wanted to teach dance. Aside from dance I would love to continue my artwork in some form, and I am also considering a career in physical sports therapy.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Gaming with my friends

3 Things on your bucket list
Visiting Japan, Voice lessons, Go on a plane (I have only flown once when I was 3 months old!)

Abby Jenkins - Oregon
Nomination by Julie Jenkins
Photography by Olivia Renee Photography
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Abby Jenkins founded Abby's Hope Project at the age of 14 in 2019, after she became sick with multiple chronic illnesses. Abby's Hope Project is a nonprofit organization that provides support to individuals, children, and families who are affected by health challenges and disabilities. She envisioned this project as a source of hope, strength, and joy for others living with chronic illnesses and to provide both emotional support and connection. Through AHP, Abby provides care packages to children’s hospitals across the US and to those receiving in-home care. Since her project began, Abby has sent over 300 care packages.

What is most rewarding to you from running Abby’s Hope Project?
I love when the people I get to support stay in touch with me, even years after they received their care package. I have even had a few recipients give back to my program by donating items to be included in future care packages.

What is your best leadership skill?
I think that my best leadership skill is my ability to stay organized. It certainly makes my nonprofit work go smoothly and I can put my energy into the most important aspect of my project which is to provide support to individuals and families facing health challenges.

What is something about having a chronic illness that people may not realize?
It's an incredibly isolating experience. I've missed out on so many 'typical teenage experiences' and it is certainly not uncommon for chronically ill people to feel like they are left behind and trying to catch up to their friends and peers

How did you find and why did you choose Olivia Renee Photography as your photographer?
My mom found Olivia Renee from an online search and encouraged me to apply to her class of '23 senior photography team. I love how seamlessly easy she makes the photoshoot experience. I had such a great time getting to have her as my photographer!

Picture

Tell us about your film you are working on.
I am working on a short film titled 'Teenage Complexities'. It is about a girl going through the motions of what being a teenager is like and her own thoughts and beliefs about what she wants her life to look like. I've always loved coming-of-age films and I naturally gravitated towards making one of that genre that also reflects my own experiences growing up.

What has been the hardest part about creating the film?
The hardest part of working on my short film has been getting the perfect shots. There is so much work that goes into every scene. I have spent a lot of time on the script, setting up the camera, and then filming until I feel confident in what I have shot.

What do you hope to do with it when it's done?
I intend on going to film school and will be including my film project in my college applications.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I could spend hours talking about various political and social issues. I have a passion for activism, especially for social justice, feminism, and disability rights.
What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

Picture

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Make a plan of what you want to accomplish and start working on it! When you put forth your best effort you will see the results of your hard work.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I hope to have just finished undergraduate film school and I plan to start getting more hands-on experience in the film/tv industry and working my way up to become either a director or a cinematographer.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Before I got sick, I was a gymnast for 10 years and trained competitively. Just recently I started doing gymnastics again recreationally and I've fallen in love with the sport all over again.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that others are inspired by me because I am not letting my chronic illness limit what I do with my life. Anyone can do and create something amazing, regardless of their challenges. Suffering doesn't have to limit who you are as a person or take away from what you choose to make out of your life.

What was it like going from homeschool to public school?
It was a big change in my life, but it was better for me. Being back in school hasn’t been all that bad as it sounded. I’ve met new people and made some friends in the past couple of months.

What was your favorite thing about being home schooled that you miss?
I miss being home, I miss my teachers and friends that I knew for years. It was fun while it lasted, but it’s nice to have a change.

What is something about being home schooled that people may not realize?
Being homeschooled sounds a lot easier than what it was. People don’t realize you can’t just get away without doing work, or not listening in class. Homeschool is almost the same as public school, I had classes, projects, and homework like everyone else.

Picture
Photography by Kristie Shook

What is your favorite thing about being at public school?
I get to see people more, I get to be more involved with events at the school. My favorite thing would be going to the football games, I get to hang out with people for the evening.

What are you most looking forward to about going back to school?
I’m looking forward to meeting more people and getting to know my teachers. Going back this year is exciting but also has me very nervous.

What do you love the most about your mom being your personal photographer? What did you love most about it?
My mom is very good at taking my pictures, she always has been. What I love most is what ideas we come up with for locations and poses for my pictures. She is my number one supporter.

What has been a favorite memory of doing photo shoots with your mom?
We were trying to fix my hair when it was a windy day, as soon as she went to take a picture the wind completely blew my hair and messed it all up again.

Picture
Photography by Kristie Shook

What are some of your modeling tips?
When taking pictures I don’t stay in one position, I continue to move or look different directions, walking away from the camera, messing with your hair. Then just go back through the pictures later and get that natural photo.

What are you especially good at and how can you do better?
I am good with pictures, but I know I can still do better, and that’s my goal. I can do better with practice. I want to be a model, and I know one day I’ll get there.

Picture
Photography by Kristie Shook
What is something about modeling that people may not realize?
Modeling can be both hard, and easy. People may not realize the difference in poses, how you can make your pictures look completely different with just an angle.

Edith Licerio - Texas
Nomination & Photography by Destinie Garcia
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Edith Licerio is a light in anyone’s life. She is so enthusiastic and is so hard driven to get far in the modeling industry. With her kind heart and beautiful smile, I’m always so blessed to photograph her!
Her revised nomination: Hello everyone!!! First of all I am so grateful and blessed to have been selected as a nominee for this amazing magazine! No type of joy can explain how long i’ve been waiting for this moment. Starting to model has been one of the best things thats brought me happiness. I am determined to keep on pushing and keep working on myself to get myself out there!! Being independent at a young age has allowed me to do many things others can’t or won’t do! Being able to represent myself to others is something I value!! and I’ll continue modeling not for fun but as an opportunity to help me out and aim for the big runway shows!
Picture
Photography by Destinie Garcia

Tell us about your modeling.
What made me want to aim for this opportunity, had all started out as a small idea of me wanting to take photoshoots to feel better about myself. After my first photoshoot, I fell in love with the outcome of the photos and not only did I want to keep doing it, but I wanted to aim to create content of putting myself out in the media. Seeing models of all types of shapes, colors, and sizes made me realize everyone can model, but I wanted to be unique and be my own version.

What do you love most about it?
The most exciting part of this, is that I can be myself in front of the camera. I don’t have to pretend like I enjoy it because I already do. I’m able to have fun in front of a camera and feel good about myself.

Why did you choose Destinie Garcia for your photographer?
This young lady was the first to push me to create content of myself! And as young as she is I can say she is a very independent and hard-working person! Destinie always makes photoshoots so fun with her and she is so kind and her personality is uplifting!!

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very independent and ambitious! I love the thrill of learning to do new things and having new skills. Modeling allows that for me to do and express a variety of different clothing styles!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I am very passionate about being ambitious and a strong worker. I could talk about for hours on why putting yourself first will never fail you! Putting the work in to get the results takes work and sweat but the results are worth it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
As a teenager, in 5 years I’m going to be in my twenties, which is shocking and exciting. I can picture myself doing runway shows as my career and continue pursuing it. Fashion is something that will always be on my mind and creating new looks and achieving new opportunities is my main goal. I want to be able to model and continue to learn new things everyday physically and mentally!

Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: I am nominating Avery Berg for inspiring teens magazine because she is an incredibly fun, social, & involved person in her community! She participates in National Honor Society, Crown Club, FCA, & Anchor Club at her high school! She was also chosen as the ambassador for the Clinton High School Career Complex program in 2019. I am working with her this year as a member of my senior rep team & she has been so helpful & kind! Thankful to have her as a part of my team, & think she would be a great recipient of this award!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love my school and community! I enjoy volunteering in my town through Crown Club Clinton and National Honor’s Society! I also had the honor of being a Diamond Girl captain for my school’s baseball team, and hope to continue. This year I decided to try something new for my senior year, and I am a volleyball manager for Lady Arrows Volleyball!

What is Crown Club Clinton and what do you do in this organization?
Crown Club Clinton is an all girls volunteer organization in my hometown! We do things like bringing baked goods to our local first responders, visiting our town’s nursing home, visiting with the elementary students at my town’s elementary school, hosting events for my town, and more!

What has been a memorable activity from being involved in the National Honors Society?
I have done lots of different activities volunteering with National Honors Society. My most memorable one is writing thank you notes to local nurses, doctors, and first responders to help uplift them and show them appreciation- especially during the pandemic!

What are your roles and responsibilities as a Diamond Girl captain?
Some of my roles as a captain of Diamond Girls include making sure all diamond girls are where they need to be and taken care of, running the concession stands, making sure all the music at my school’s baseball games is perfect & played at the right time, getting fly balls, and being a welcoming student to all the players, parents, and other students!

Why did you decide to become a volleyball manager and what are you most looking forward to?
I became a volleyball manager quite out of the blue! They needed another manager for extra help, and I thought it would be something fun to add to my senior year. So far, it’s been super fun watching the girls play summer games and I’ve learned SO much about the sport that I never even knew! I’m most excited to see all the friendships and memories this upcoming season brings me.

What is FCA and what is a favorite accomplishment from this group?
FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) is a Christian fellowship club at my school. We meet once a month and worship together- I always look forward to it! My favorite accomplishment from FCA is inviting my friends/ classmates to join us at FCA and help them strengthen their relationship with God!

Tell us about Anchor Club and your involvement in it.
Anchor Club is another volunteer club at my school! My favorite thing I’ve participated in through this club is raising money to buy toys, clothes, and necessities for a little boy so that he could have a Christmas last year! The look on his face brought me so much joy and really showed the true meaning of Christmas!

What does it mean to you to be an ambassador for the Clinton High School Career Complex program?
My school has a CTE (Career and Technical Education) program. It’s different classes that focus on specific workforces and what it’s like to work in them! I took the two year course of Teacher Academy where I went through everything I’d learn in college if I pursued a career in education, and twice a week I had the opportunity to student teach a third grade class! I was chosen to represent the Teacher Academy course as an ambassador and introduce all upcoming high school students to the course and my picture taken and on the CTE ambassador wall!

What leadership roles have you received being a part of any of the above?
The biggest role I’ve received while being a leader in any club, group, or class is to be a listener. You learn the most when you listen to other people and their ideas! Being creative is another leadership role I’ve received. I have to be creative when leading a group- especially when planning a project, event, etc.

Picture
Photography by Shelby Mullins Photography

What have you learned about yourself as a leader?
One thing I’ve learned about myself as a leader is that I have a hard time communicating and trusting whoever I might be teamed up with in a situation. Sometimes it’s hard to trust different people when doing things like working in groups, but a little communication can go a long way to helping me trust them to help us complete our project or job. And I’ve gotten so much better at this by just trusting my partners! I also have realized how organized I am, a very important leader role. One last thing is how motivating I am to my peers, I always try my best to make sure everyone is heard, loved, and noticed!

What are you most looking forward to about your senior year?
My senior year I am most looking forward to making memories! I took all the classes I could over the summer to get ahead and leave room on my schedule for more electives and time to make memories that will last a lifetime! A love my school, all of its staff, and opportunities. I can’t wait for an amazing school year!

How did you find and why did you choose Shelby Mullins Photography as your photographer?
Shelby was actually my little sister’s teacher and some of my friends were using her as a senior photographer, so I started to follow her Instagram page. She then posted applications for senior ambassadors to represent her photography business. I applied and got accepted! Shelby is now my senior causal photographer and I have so enjoyed working with her! She’s so sweet and knows exactly how to make anyone, any senior, any girl feel confident about themselves. She’s truly the best!

What was your photoshoot experience like?
Just perfect! I had my photoshoot at the Mississippi Art Museum, and it was so pretty! It was SO hot but that is Mississippi weather for you! We had so much fun in the rain, sun, and sweat. All my pictures came out great and I can’t wait to continue working with Shelby.

What did you love most about being on her team?
I love getting to make new friendships, continuing to grow old friendships, dressing up, being myself, and overall, just how much of a confidence boost Shelby has given me!

Picture
Photography by Shelby Mullins Photography
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Some of my favorite things to talk about are food, fashion, traveling, and interior design! I enjoy trying new foods (especially when traveling) to expand my pallet. Fashion has always been something I’ve had interest in & give great advice on. Traveling is a topic I’d bring up because I LOVE to travel- I love being in the car, the beach, the mountains, and concerts! Interior design is something I’m very good at and enjoy doing. Growing up, HGTV was my favorite thing to watch.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up! I went from struggling in school super bad, not trying, disappointing my parents, and giving up on myself in middle school. To not only having all A’s, but being in multiple honors courses, clubs, and being in the top 60 students of my school. Anything is possible when you have confidence in yourself to accomplish your goals!

Adalyn Ashley

Picture

Adalyn Ashley – Ohio
Nomination by Shelby Walters
Photography by Maria Kirkland/12.9 Dance Photography
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Adalyn is such a sweet, hardworking, and amazing kid! She maintains good grades, dances 5 days a week, and is an awesome big sister to her 5 siblings. In addition to being her mom, I have had the opportunity to be Adalyn’s art teacher at school. On the playground, she is the kid who will comfort a crying classmate, or befriend someone she sees sitting alone. She approaches every situation with kindness and always has a smile on her face. What I admire most about Adalyn is her ability to overcome. When she was just 10 years old, she lost her one month old baby sister, Evelyn, due to a heart defect. After Evelyn’s passing, Adalyn told me that every time she steps on stage, she dances for her sister in heaven because she knows Evelyn will never get the chance to dance. I am just in awe at her perseverance.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my experiences as a dancer. I am currently on two competition dance teams through my studio, Dance Expressions.

When did you get started as a dancer and what do you love most about it?
I began dancing at age 8, before that I was a gymnast. The thing I love most about dancing is all the new people and friends that I meet. I also love being on stage. Even though I am not in gymnastics anymore, I like that I can still use some those skills in my dancing.

What types of dances do you study and which is your favorite?
I study a lot of different types of dance such as jazz, Pom, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, and I am taking my first tap class this year. My favorites are lyrical and hip hop!

Tell us about your favorite performance and/or costume ever.
My favorite performance was one that my dance team and I did in our last dance season. It was a hip hop routine to a mix of songs by Britney Spears and choreographed by my coach, Brianne. I love to tumble, and my coach added my round off backhand spring to the routine! It was such a fun number to perform!
My favorite costume ever, is a tough one because I’ve had so many I have loved! If I had to choose, it would be a costume for our lyrical routine, Tomorrow, from Annie. I loved it because it was so comfortable and easy to move in.

What do you think non dancers should definitely know about dancers?
I think sometimes people think dance is easier than it is. It actually takes a lot of training and hours in the studio working to improve techniques and master skills. It is also hard on your body, muscles, ankles, etc. If you don’t know what you’re doing or you’re not getting proper training, you can really hurt yourself.

What is the best part of being involved in dance 5 days a week?
I love to see all my friends! I also love to stay busy! You would think with dancing all the time I would get sick of it, but I really enjoy it!

Why did you choose 12.9 Photography for your dance photos?
A few girls in my studio have represented 12.9 Dance Photography in the past, and I started following her on Instagram. I loved looking at all her beautiful photos!

What do you love most about being on the 12.9 Dance Model Team?
Maria picks the best locations and has such cool ideas for photos!

Picture
Photography by Maria Kirkland/12.9 Dance Photography
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
On my dance team, I try to make everyone feel included. I want to be a leader and someone that younger dancers can look up to. When I practice, I try to work as hard as I can so that I can get the most out of my time in the studio and set a good example for my peers.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I could talk forever about dance! I love to dance and I love all styles of dance. I did not discover dance until I was 8 years old when I took my first hip hop class at Dance Expressions. After that, I was hooked! I went from taking one class per week, to dancing every single day!

Tell us about your sisters.
I have 5 sisters. My oldest sister, Jonnah, is 15 and she loves to play volleyball, draw, and face painting. My 4 year old sister, Hendricks, was born with special needs. She had to have many surgeries to correct a cleft lip and palate, has hearing loss, and still has more surgeries left to come. Her most recent surgery, she had a cochlear implant put in and is doing great! My family and I are learning sign language together to better communicate with her. My sister Evelyn passed away in 2020 from a congenital heart defect when she was only one month old, she would have celebrated her 2nd birthday in August. I also have two baby sisters that were born 3 weeks apart, Violette and Blaire. They keep me busy, but I love helping to take care of them!

What do you love doing most with your siblings?
We love to play games, go on vacations, and we love to laugh!

What is a favorite place you like to go?
My grandparents have a beach house in Florida. My dad, step-mom, and some of my sisters and I get to go there every summer!

Picture
Photography by Maria Kirkland/12.9 Dance Photography

What do you love about art?
My mom is an art teacher, so my sisters and I get to create lots of things together. We have a little building in our backyard that we use for our art studio. I love art because it’s gives me the chance to be creative. My favorite materials to use are paint, ripped paper, and clay. I don’t have a favorite piece that I have made, but one of my pieces won 2nd place in an art show. It was made out of ripped construction paper and glue.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The first year I tried out for the dance team, I didn’t make it and I was crushed. I kept taking classes and practicing hard every day and I made the team the following year. If you want something bad enough, keep working until you get there, and keep setting more goals.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself still dancing and helping to teach classes at my studio.

3 Things on your bucket list
Visit the Caribbean, take a trip across the country with my family, and I would love to see New York City!

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom! She is one of my biggest supporters! She also does a lot to keep our family running smoothly.

She spread flyers around her neighborhood asking for extra cans/foods and collected over 100 of them, then opened her church for struggling families to collect as many as they wanted. Photography by Eyes of Joe Photography

Tell us about your service work.
My first food drive was in 2019. At first, I was very involved with my Church. I helped volunteer at Sunday School, then later decided to take part on the food drive they were doing!

How often do you do it and who do you get to help you?
I try to do it every two summers. My mom was a big help on it as well, together we collected lots of food cans by posting on our social media's to see if anyone would like to donate, and we were very successful!

What have you learned about yourself through this endeavor?
I learned that nothing comes easy at first, and God puts us on a certain path in life so that we learn from all the things He has planned for us. I feel that the most important thing being a leader is to bring others up while being kind.

Picture
Photography by Eyes of Joe Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Eyes of Joe Photography for your senior photographer?
I found Joe by being active on social media and looking at photography accounts. I wanted a photographer for my senior pictures who made me feel confident in myself, and he does just that.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
He is incredibly fun to work with. He brings out confidence in me and makes me feel amazing about myself. He may be my Senior photographer now, but I know after high school! I'm going to continue to work with him and his amazing work!

Why do you want to become a pediatrician and what are you most looking forward to in getting to that point?
When I'm older, I want to take my love for children and passion in helping others to become a pediatrician. I'm most excited for the learning experience and getting to know the families I'll be working with!

What state did you move from, how old were you and what was the hardest part about the move?
When I was 7, I moved from Indiana to Ohio. The hardest part about the move was leaving friends and family behind, and adjusting to the new people that I was surrounded with. Being a very shy, closed-off kid, it was hard making new friends at school.

What is the best part of the move now that you're older?
The best part of the move is I'd never thought I'd be where I am now. I broke out of my shy, awkward self to cheering and dancing in front of audiences with
my cheer squad. I made lots of friends and created many bonds with people in my community today. I couldn't be happier!

Picture
Image taken by Tami Ortman

What are your higher standards?
Growing up here in Ohio I knew God had put me in this spot in life, and I had to make the most of it. I started creating higher standards for myself by being more productive and becoming a hard worker. I started putting that mindset into school, work and sports.

What will you miss most about your small community environment?
I'll definitely miss all the memories I had created with my community. To booster drives, Friday night lights, and even the small get togethers all around town- I’ll miss it all. I now know what it's like to live somewhere where people are proud of where they're from and I can say the same.

Tell us about your cheer career - how you got started and where are you with it now?
I first started cheering in middle school, now I’m on my high school's varsity cheerleading squad. I've cheered for football, and have even participated on my high school's competition cheer team which
made it to state!

What is a favorite memory teaching younger children about cheer?
My favorite memory has to be seeing all the mini cheerleaders super excited to cheer at football games. I enjoy seeing them look for their parents in the stadium to show them the hard work they've put in during our cheer clinics.

What is your team like and where do you fit in?
My cheer squad and I are like sisters. From practicing up to four hours a day, to doing each other's hair before a football game. We've gone through it all together. The bond we have altogether is super special, and most of the friendships I have now were created while participating in cheer!

Picture

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was witnessing lots of families being separated by restrictions, then helping by asking for donations and being able to provide for them in their time in need.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Stay true to yourself, do what you love the most, and to never doubt yourself or God!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself starting my career into healthcare. My plans are to become the most hardworking self I can be, while becoming a pediatrician.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity is to spend time with my family and friends, and to make the most out of it. It doesn't matter what we're doing, as long as I'm with my people, I'm the happiest.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are to raise a family, visit the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and to cook with Gordon Ramsey. I feel like that'd be fun.

Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person in my life is my mom. Seeing her move to America from Monterrey, Mexico at the age of 17, and learning a new language while battling the differences in countries inspires me every day.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
The last thing I'd like to say is how grateful I am to be a part of this experience, and how happy I am to voice in something so special for everyday teens like myself.

What do you consider your greatest achievements in high school?

I consider my amount of involvement with extracurricular and ability to hold a GPA of 3.9 one of my greatest achievements in high school.

Tell us about your cheer career. When did you get started and where are you with it now?
I started competition cheer in 5th grade then ended it in 7th grade with a trip to Vegas for nationals. After finishing competitive cheer I decided to give sideline cheer a try and fell in love immediately. Now I am in my 6th year of sideline cheer and hope to continue it when I go into college.

What do you love most about cheer and/or your cheer team?
It is hard to pick what I love most about cheer because I truly do love everything from hearing the crowd roar to my loving teammates. If I did have to choose one it is for sure the family I have gain from joining the team I truly love and trust all of the girl on my team and it is something really special.

What is a favorite accomplishment from cheer?
My favorite accomplishment from cheer is that twice a year we get to take time out of our season to help teach little girls how to cheer and become inspiring young ladies. It is a true blessing to see these girls year after year look up to us.

Picture
Photography by Gina Wiseman Photography

What is being in show choir like?
Being in show choir is unlike any other experience ever. I have bonds from my choir that is nothing like anything I have had before. We work hard all year to see it all pay off as we bring joy to people who love to watch the performing arts. Being in show choir really is an honor.

Do you have a favorite song or show you participated in?
My favorite song I participated in was my solo singing “Popular” from the musical Wicked. It was my very first solo and I will never forget the feeling of getting on that stage and giving it my very all putting all my nerves aside I was the most proud of myself in that moment.

How do you also spend your time in show choir and cheer?
I also dedicate a lot of my time helping the younger kids in show choir and cheer teaching them about not only how to be better in the activity but also how to go about high school and life lessons.

How did you find and why did you choose Gina Wiseman Photography for your photographer?
I found Gina through my friend Jordyn Miller who has had Gina photographic her. I chose Gina because I loved how Jordyn photos turned out and I knew she could open many opportunities for me.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience so far has been very well she makes me feel so comfortable and the photos really scream “me” I love most about Gina is how much she cares about making me feel comfortable.

Tell us about your role as a volunteer at the Salvation Army.
At the Salvation Army I help prepare and serve food for those in needs after preparing and serving the food I keep company with those who sit and eat.

What is your favorite part about volunteering at Christ Mount?
My favorite part about Christ Mount is being able to influence the campers experience and give them some one their age to talk to and really see them grow and become friends with us.

What are your roles and responsibilities volunteering at the animal shelter?
My roles and responsibilities at the animal shelter are to clean, walk, play, and feed the animals that are at the shelter I also help scout out homes for the animals.

What is a favorite memory from volunteering?
My favorite memory from volunteering is while I was at Christ Mount 2 years ago my group and the campers where playing shaving foam softball and it was the first the campers began to open us to us and start seeing us as friends and people they want to be like they started to respect us and each other I just felt like my volunteer group played a huge role in that.

What have you planned for the future?
I have planned to attend Purdue university to study veterinary science. I also plan to continue cheering at Purdue university, so I can continue to hold the ability to inspire others.

What would you like to change in the world?
I would like to help change the lack of equality in the world.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
If I was going to present a topic to my peers it would be about equality for all. I feel that many people my age and older don’t know how to treat people that are different from them. They are either sexists, racists, or homophobic. I think that people need to remember that we are all just people who deserve the same respect and rights.

Rowan Cornish – Ohio
Nomination by Erin Dorn
Photography by Maria Kirkland with 12.9 Photography
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Rowan Cornish is loyal, dedicated, and intelligent. She excels academically as she works grade levels ahead of her age while being homeschooled. Her passion for dance is unparalleled and she works hard to perfect her craft. On a personal note, she is shy, but is the most loyal friend a person could ask for. Not only is she kind, she’s compassionate and will bend over backward to help someone in need. She understands the importance of being strong and confident, and will always find a positive outlook when things look negative.
Picture
Photography by Maria Kirkland with 12.9 Photography

What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about dance because I can translate my emotions into movements. I’m not an extrovert, so all the different forms of dance help me tell groups of people how I’m feeling as I entertain them on stage. I also like to model for the same reason. Dancing and modeling give me creative freedom and expression.

Tell us about your dance career. How and when did you get started and where are you at with it now?
I started dancing when I was 4, and I loved it, especially when I was on stage. One year I went to see The Nutcracker and said I wanted to dance on THAT stage one day so I auditioned for show, received a role, and that was it – I knew I wanted to dance at Dayton Ballet School. I enrolled the next year and have taken classes there ever since. It’s been a fun experience, all my instructors have taught me so much, and I’ve been a part of great shows with great friends.

What is a typical dance day/week like for you?
Dance is something I do every day once school is finished. My in-studio classes this year will be almost every day of the week, and when I’m not in the studio, I’m working at home. I’m dedicated to my sport, and dance is so much more than a hobby to me, so I put in the hours needed to perfect my skills.

What types of dance do you study and which do you prefer? Why?

If I had my way, I’d do all forms of dance, but this year I’m focusing on ballet and pointe, plus I’m taking a variety of other styles. I don’t like to pick a favorite because each style is fun and presents a challenge. If I had to pick, though, I’d say musical theater is my favorite because it really lets me act and do a lot of expressions, plus it combines a lot of the dance styles into one routine.

Tell us a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from dance.

My favorite accomplishment with dance is when I made it into Dayton Ballet II Junior Company. I worked so hard to perfect my technique by the time I was old enough to audition, so it was exciting to get the acceptance letter stating I was a part of junior company.

If you could showcase your talents on any dance tv show, which would you choose? What would you wear, dance to, style of dance etc?
Performing on America’s Got Talent would be so much fun, and I love Howie Mandel – he’s hilarious. I think I would do a musical theater piece from Legally Blonde so I could have a lot of fun, act, and show my personality on stage, plus I could combine it with a freestyle dog act to include Bruiser. I know my costume would be pink and sparkly, and it would be amazing.

Why did you choose 12.9 Dance Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I’ve been in front of a camera my whole life, but when I heard Maria does dance photography (and so much more, she’s a great photographer), I knew I had to get an appointment with her. After our first session, I knew I wanted to try to be one of her 12.9 Dance Ambassadors – and I am! Working with Maria is so much fun. I can bounce ideas to her, and she can come back with an idea that’s even better. She creates really cool concepts, and I have the best time while doing two things I absolutely love – dancing and modeling. Maria has introduced me to so many talented dancers, and she’s always so positive and encourages all her models to be confident and show the world what we, as dancers, are capable of doing – and we can do a lot, believe me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?

I think it’s important for all athletes to know the importance of listening to their bodies as they train in their respective sports. As a dancer, I’ve had to learn how to recognize injuries as my body is telling me to slow down and heal, rather than push through and further damaging myself. Nutrition and proper exercises are so important, as well as listening to doctors and professionals when they offer to help. Preventing injuries now allows us to continue toward our dreams as we get older.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I like volunteering and helping people. I donate time and items to our local shelters and churches. Not everyone has advantages like I’m lucky enough to have, so I want to give back and help when I can.

What do you do at your local shelters?
When I was little, my parents taught me to donate gently used belongings to women’s shelters and local churches. When I’m there, I sometimes I get to meet and interact with kids and families who are there for help, and I try to help take their minds off their troubles by playing with the kids, giving them some of the items I brought, or just talking with them. Knowing I can help someone that’s a little down on their luck by offering them my friendship and some of the things I’ve outgrown is a great feeling.

What has been a favorite moment during your time there?
One time we saw a notice saying blankets were needed because it was really cold outside. I had so many fleece blankets I didn’t use anymore so we boxed them up and took them to the shelter. I was allowed to help give them to some of the kids that were staying there that night. I like knowing I can help make people be happy, even if it’s just because they received a new blanket.

What leadership opportunities have presented themselves as a result of you actively pursuing volunteering?
I’m really shy, and I have a hard time starting conversations with people I don’t know, but with kids it’s easier. I’ve learned I can get a group of kids to calm down and focus on a task, and I love organizing activities and leading them. I also take that with me into my dance world when we have a big production and they need help with younger students to keep them quiet and focused while other groups are rehearsing and dancing.

What have you learned about your leadership style as a result?
I realized I’m a quiet leader, and I have a lot of fun ideas to help control a crowd. I’m working hard to overcome my shyness, and one day I’ll get there, but for now, I want other shy kids to realize they have voices and can be leaders, too. Whether they use their voices to help others in need, or translate their voices into dance, art, or music, their voices deserve to be heard.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

Making it into DBII. I had to work so hard to get to that level of ballet technique, but it all paid off.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard and always keep a positive attitude. Things may be difficult, but your goals can be achieved if you keep at it and work toward your dreams.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
My goal is to get my high school and college diplomas within months of each other. After that, I’d like to be on Broadway or dancing professionally.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Drawing, swimming, and playing with my dog Wiki.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can do some weird things with my eyes, like cross one and not the other.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Learn archery and get good at it
2. Visit New York City to see the 911 Memorials
3. See the islands of Hawaii and explore volcanoes

Who do you find inspiring?
Misty Copeland because she is so talented and makes ballet look easy – and we all know it’s not. All my instructors at Dayton Ballet are inspiring because they’ve done what I’m trying to do – dance professionally, then pass along their experiences and knowledge to their students.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I’m a hard worker, and when I set my goals, I do everything I can to achieve them. Some of my younger friends see this, and they can see their dreams are within reach, too.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Always work hard, even if you want to give up, and try to keep a positive outlook. I have a lot to learn still, but I won’t quit trying or practicing so I can reach my goals.

What would you most like to talk about?

I would love to talk about the importance of people pursuing their passions and following their dreams. "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life", wise words spoken by Marc Anthony. I still gain joy from baking and making special treats for special holidays. However, my experience with managing a thriving local day spa has piqued my interest in skin and holistic health care. My passions continue to grow as I learn to love life and all it has to offer.

Tell us first about your bakery experience. What was it like getting your business up and running, and what did you love most about it?
When I first started my home bakery business at 10, I had only made two types of cupcakes. I love tinkering in the kitchen, trying new things. I love a challenge, like macarons. Not only that, but I love being able to give someone joy when tasting my delectable goodies. My mom helped me name my business since she is so creative: Unravel Your Sweet 2th. The next thing I knew I was designing my own business cards and soon handing them out to all of our neighbors, friends, and family.

What was the National ProStart Invitational and what did you and your team do there?
ProStart is an industry-backed culinary arts and management program for high school students. The National ProStart Invitational is a competition that showcases the talent of the top ProStart students as they compete to win in culinary or management events. My team competed on the culinary side, where we were challenged to make a three-course meal (appetizer, entree, and dessert) in under 1 hour with no running water or electricity. It was amazing to see every state’s team, full of inspiring students from around our country. The amount of skill, creativity, and teamwork these teens had was truly incredible.

What was your team like and what was a favorite memory with them?
My team was made up of five incredible women who were new to this particular competition with only the expectation to gain experience. We each had a specific role on the team. One was the team manager. The other two girls worked together to make the appetizer, one focused on the entree, and I was in charge of the dessert…of course. Little did we know at our first competition we would win first place in the state and head to nationals. That was definitely my favorite moment with my team because we were all in shock, crying tears of happiness.

What did you do to win nationals and what was that like?
My team and I won first place at the state competition in Tennessee. From there we were invited to represent our state at the national level in Washington D.C. Unfortunately, my team did not place first in the national competition. There was so much amazing talent at this culinary event and definitely some strong competitors. However, I was inspired by all the teens my age there. I made lots of new friends from around the country and it was truly an experience of a lifetime that will have an impact on my life forever.

How did you find and why did you choose Pixbyrobyn for your photographer?
Robyn McIssac was a volleyball mom who had a daughter on my middle school volleyball team. My mom was pregnant with baby #4 and hired her to take family announcement photos. She later photographed my sisters and I when the youngest was 6 months. My mom swears that those are the best pictures she has ever had done. So, when we were looking for a photographer for my senior pictures there was no doubt that Robyn was our girl! Robyn is amazing, professional, and dedicated because she had all my photos edited to perfection in less than 24 hours!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was wholesome, genuine, and authentic. We started with my favorite hobby, baking of course. I made a cute tower of tiny donuts to incorporate my love of food into my senior pictures. Next, we changed styles to my hippy, grunge aesthetic. Fashion is another one of my passions. I also wanted to include my whole other personality, my 2001 Jeep Wrangler. My absolute favorite part though was when I changed into my cowgirl hat and started dancing in the rain. Robyn made this day absolutely special and it was everything I could have ever dreamed it would be.

Let's move onto skin care. What got you interested in it?
Like every “short reel obsessed” teen, I have always been fascinated with the show Dr. Pimple Popper and even watching clips of people extracting blackheads from the nose. When I was hired at the local day spa, that was when I started to learn all about the benefits of certain skincare services and products. Clients come to see us to help with their acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and other skin concerns they want to address. It is important to know and to understand how to take care of the largest organ of your body which is what got me interested.

What do you wish every teen knew about their skin that they might not know?
I wish every teen knew that acne is not below the beauty standard. It is normal and beautiful to wear your skin the way it is. It also is terrible to cover up your acne with makeup because it just makes it worse. The solution that helps get rid of acne goes beyond the medication a dermatologist will prescribe you. It is intertwined and affected due to diet, hygiene, physical and mental health. The number one solution is diet and what we put in our bodies affects the outside appearance of our skin.

What is, and what has been a favorite aha moment that you've learned about salt therapy?
My favorite a-ha moment was when I realized where salt therapy came from. Its concept originated in Eastern Europe salt mines and caves. Salt therapy essentially treats those stubborn allergies along with mental health and skin disorders, when inhaled or rubbed topically on our skin. During WWII, in Germany, salt mines were great bomb shelters. The people that were taking shelter in salt mines were inhaling salt particles. Their respiratory problems were greatly lessened compared to those of coal miners. This makes grave sense as to why salt therapy treats people with respiratory issues.

What have you learned about your leadership style through management?
I have learned that my leadership style is transformational. This means I like to inspire my team and encourage them to achieve their goals. I place high value on relationships with my team members in order to be able to know how to work well with each other. I take action in times of confusion to make sure everything runs smoothly in the business during my shift. I love taking on the leadership role and it just comes so naturally with the person I am.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I could talk forever about women's health and skincare desires. Many people, especially women, feel this constant need to drink from the "Fountain of Youth." To be youthful should be determined by the inside, not the outside. Age tells an intriguing history of the life someone has lived. I believe in a holistic approach to skincare regimens through salt and sweat therapy, meditation, and nutrition. I have been fortunate enough to study such services through my new job and school. I do believe that a woman that feels good does good for the world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I played volleyball for my school and club for 5 years, and at particular times, I would supply my team with delicious homemade treats. When I was in high school, my freshman coach immediately offered me a job in her family bakery. There I played a vital role in crafting (never before sold) macarons, cake pops, and other confectionaries and perfecting my cake decorating. Unfortunately, in order to work there, I had to give up my home business. I held that first job for under 3 years before they closed their business.

Tell us more about volleyball life. Why did you start playing and what was your skillset?
I had never played volleyball before and wanted to try something new. In the 6th grade, I decided to try out for volleyball and made the team. From there I played for 5 years as the libero/setter positions. These particular positions require leadership, communication and confidence on the court. I always dove after the ball and strived to play my best. Volleyball taught me to be a leader and never give up.

What is a favorite accomplishment from the sport?
My favorite accomplishment was whenever I was able to receive a ball from the opposing team’s hitter. The adrenaline rush would kick in when you had a 30mph ball rush towards your face. Especially when I could take that hit and give a perfect pass to the setter, that would always make any game for me, win or lose. However, I do love to win!

How do you maintain such a high GPA at the college level while still having so many other things going on in your life?
Balancing a school, work, and social life is very much a challenge. I push myself to be the best that I can be. My real-world experiences and responsibilities have set me up for success in the future. I would not be able to maintain the schedule that I have without the blessed community that surrounds me with love and support as I strive to pursue my dreams. Being able to manage my time in the way that I have will definitely be a skill I will need to have for the path of medicine.

Nicole Burgon – Connecticut
Nomination & Photography by Dorothy Hart - A Hart's Eye Photography
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination revised by Nicole: I am from the small, coastal town of East Lyme, CT. I graduated from East Lyme High School in 2021 and I was the Senior Laureate. I now study at Arcadia University in Pennsylvania, where I’m majoring in History and double minoring in Secondary Education and Law & Public Policy. My dream has always been to help others. Reading, writing, and learning allow me to follow my dream by listening to and sharing diverse stories. I just returned from studying abroad in London. This would not have been possible without my friends, family, school, and community! I want to give back!

Tell us about your college life at Arcadia. What do you love most about it?
I love that Arcadia is a tight-knit community and that students have the freedom to explore possibilities for their future. Within my first couple days at Arcadia, I was lucky enough to meet the people who are still my friends a year later. Within my freshman year, I was also lucky enough to work with professors and advisors who I know will be a great support system for years to come. I was also lucky enough to study abroad. Arcadia is a place that fosters students advocating for themselves and taking advantage of these kinds of opportunities and connections.

How do you balance all your studies with a major and double minor?
This sounds cliché, but I believe I am able to balance all my work because I am truly passionate about what I’m studying, and I have a genuine love for learning. When I’m reading a book or writing a research paper for a class, while I often have to push through the tedious parts and the late hours, the work is so undoubtedly worth it to me because I see how my studies connect to other areas of my life. That’s why I want to inspire people to follow their heart and find what excites them.

What are your extracurriculars at college?
I am an editor of our scholarly journal, The Compass; I am an Ambassador, a Study Abroad Mentor, Co-President of the Arcadia Baking Club, Secretary of the Self Defense Club, and part of the Honors Council. When I have time, I like to participate in something recreational such as Zumba.

What was the most unexpected thing you found at the University?
To be honest, I did not expect to find the same cliques and prejudices that were present in high school. Granted, in college, you will meet a LOT more people who don’t care about that kind of stuff, but it was surprising to me that people still do, until I remembered that people get a lot of validation and power from their titles, what they look like, and how much they fit into the status quo. Genuine people are harder to find in the “real world” than I thought, so when you find them, appreciate them, and be one yourself! Be someone who is intentional about your words and actions, and conscious of how they can affect so much around you and connect to so many consequences.

Tell us about your travel abroad to London. Why did you choose London, how long were you gone for and how did it differ from American studies?
Studying abroad in London was such an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ve always been drawn to traveling. I visited Peru when I was really young to visit my mom’s family, but after that, my only opportunities to travel were through school programs that provided the funding and resources I needed. I traveled to China and Canada in 8th grade and fell in love with traveling then, but this was my first trip since. I have always wanted to visit Europe and the UK, so when I found out that London was where you went if you wanted to study abroad your second semester freshman year at Arcadia, I was ecstatic. At first, I was hesitant about studying abroad my first year, but I rather impulsively decided to take the leap instead of waiting for a time that felt “more right,” because as we all learned during Covid, everything can change so quickly. I was gone for 4 months (Jan-April) and in that time, I noticed that perhaps some of the biggest differences from American studies were that 1) Everything is just much more historical. America is such a young country when you put it into perspective. 2) Being in the capital city, the center of everything, also made everything much more political and cultural. We are often unwilling to confront those aspects of life in American studies, but my British professors did not shy away from those conversations. 3) You have much more freedom and independence while studying abroad, but because of that, you need to take even more initiative in your own learning and really, in your own life. It’s inspiring to find out that you CAN do that.

What, if any, challenges did you find with studying abroad during covid?
Luckily, the Covid situation where we were was improving. I was already so used to restrictions, regulations, and quick changes at that point, after two years of the pandemic. However, it was a bit scary living in a city, using public transportation, traveling around, and living with people all during a pandemic, especially as people around me began to get Covid. Luckily, I somehow never got the virus, and I’d like to think that is all because I have responsible, diligent people in my life, but I know at least some part of it is out of our control, and you have to learn to be okay with that. Accepting the unexpected and relinquishing control is such an important lesson learned from studying abroad.

What is a favorite memory from studying abroad?
I really enjoyed visiting The Cotswolds with two of my friends. We had planned the trip the night before, or rather, the morning of, at 2 am. We woke up hours later to leave for Bath, and we were going to head to the Cotswolds at midday. The transportation we had planned for wasn’t running, and as students on a budget, we didn’t know how we were going to pull off getting there, but we did, and it was truly the most magical place I have ever been. On that note, I loved Windsor Castle. Any excursion where I got to finally be somewhere so iconic after years of just seeing it in pictures and media was such a meaningful experience that I will always remember. Also, the more mundane memories such as movie nights with friends stand out because we were all living in an apartment together, on our own, for the first time. I also got to meet the author of one of my favorite books, In Defense of the Princess. She was so kind.

How did you find and why did you choose Dorothy Hart - A Hart's Eye Photography for your photographer?
Dorothy Hart has been doing photoshoots for high school seniors in my community for years, so as soon as I got into high school and onto social media, I was growing up alongside her beautiful images. But it was she who approached me and asked if I would be interested in pursuing this opportunity to be in Inspiring Teens, and I am forever grateful that she did, because no matter what happens, it’s so empowering to go after something such as this. Dorothy Hart made my photoshoot possible and helped me every step of the way and stayed in touch with me while I went away to school and abroad. She provided me with the resources and support I needed, all with a positive attitude and kindness.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I really loved that I got to take pictures with my parents, my dog, my books, and flowers. The location of my photoshoot was perfect: it was the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, where I have been before. The experience was also so pleasant. Therefore, even before this competition started, I was just so grateful to have pictures that meant so much to me and reflected a good memory and time in my life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I grew from being a very shy child to someone who loves to speak with others. In high school I had leadership roles in Key Club, Leo’s Club, Encountering Differences, Best Buddies, and a project I started called History in the Making. I was also in the National Honor Society. I loved all of the relationships I formed through these clubs. I met inspiring people, and I hope to uplift and empower them through my work. In college, I am a leader in our Honors program, an editor of our scholarly journal, a student Ambassador, and more.

Tell us about some of your leadership roles in these endeavors.
I am extremely grateful for these leadership roles because they are truly where I found my voice. They also allowed me to make deeper connections with teachers and people in my community. I got to work with and know people on a more personal, meaningful level. Whether I was the one designating tasks to people or the one performing an act of service, I really loved being united behind a common cause. Seeing actual results from that, whether it’s more funding for a historical house or just a smile and a “thank you” from someone at the senior center, is inspiring.

What do you feel is your best leadership quality as a result of these experiences?
I feel that my best leadership quality is that I have a genuine enthusiasm and knack for bringing people together. I do enjoy being a leader, but not for the title. I enjoy being a leader because I get to see other people become inspired to be a leader themselves, whether it’s in their studies, their personal relationships, or something else. I like to recognize everyone’s diverse skills, all of which are very needed, and encourage them to use them for good. Everyone needs to be seen and appreciated for who they are, and as a leader, you should be doing that. Ultimately, I think that if you have a platform, you should use it to pull others up to the platform with you, or give them their own. I hope I am doing that in all my leadership roles, in some way.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would most like to talk about the importance of going out of your way to learn about people and their stories or struggles. People are so focused on inspiring others that they don’t see how many people could inspire them. If anyone has the privilege of receiving a platform, such as being in this magazine, they should consider using the platform to speak up about the quiet, unrecognized, inspiring voices in their life. There are many people in my travels so far who deserve a shout out. They have inspired me to be outspoken about doing the right thing.

Who is someone who has inspired you, and how?
This sounds cliché, but my parents. I haven’t always publicly talked about how much they inspire me because I know they prefer to stay out of the limelight, but they have always been there for me as parents and true friends. They believe in me, encourage me to be myself, and to simply try my best. They remind me that it’s okay to change, to not know, and to make mistakes. Both of my parents spend a lot of their time helping their families even though they have a lot of other things on their plate, so I’ve always been inspired by their selflessness and generosity. As a child, I was insecure about not having the biggest house, not going on faraway family vacations every summer…but as a teenager, I’ve realized that I have all the blessings and riches I need in that I learned manners and morals from my parents and that they are two people who I can always talk to about anything. Success shouldn’t be defined based on a college degree that determines what you know, nor who you know based on the connections you’ve made through your cultural capital such as being able to speak English. You are successful when you are happy and a good person who tries to do right by those that need it. That’s what matters most.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Anyone who knows me can confirm that I like to talk about topics that we are taught to stay away from such as politics, religion, and philosophy. However, I can go from discussing those topics to talking about my favorite music, movies, and books. Ultimately, a common theme throughout all my favorite topics is the importance of treating others with kindness and going against the status quo to stand up for people. There are so many “enemies” right now, but we (we as women, as teens, as Americans, as other groups) are strong when we stand together.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I had always considered speaking at graduation, but when the time came to sign up I did so rather impulsively, and then I had great help in revising my speech after I was selected for Senior Laureate. I was nervous about getting up there and reading it, but when I stepped onto the stage, I was more excited than anything to finally tell people what I’d wanted to for 12 years.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
“Treasure your past, thrive in your present, and dream for your future.” Find joy in and be truly grateful for the seemingly small experiences and relationships right now - they are big parts of your story, or someone else’s, and deserve to be respected!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I am still passionate about education, but I might want to go into something more investigative and writing-based before teaching, such as journalism. I plan to travel somewhere else by then (hopefully Ireland), I hope to still be friends with amazing people and get to see all of their successes and achievements, and I plan to still be coming back to East Lyme, CT to be with my family.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I really love music and I hope to learn more about it and even somewhat participate in it someday. I have always grown up listening to lots of different types of music, and I have a deep appreciation for the classics but also the up and coming artists who are using their gift to share positive messages.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I’d like to say I’m good at whistling. It’s very random and probably useless, but I can whistle like a bird, and that’s fun to do around friends and surprise them.

3 Things on your bucket list
Publish a book, go to Paris, and go skydiving or on a hot air balloon.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope to inspire others by being authentic, optimistic, and brave enough to care and SHOW that I care through my words, actions, and work. I believe these are traits that we need a lot more of in the world.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
As the daughter of two working-class parents, one of which an immigrant, and as someone who vehemently believes in the power of using people’s stories to inspire, thank you for this opportunity.

What was your experience like with Marc Harvey Celebrity Make-up Artist? What did you love most about it?
Honestly, I’ve known Mr. Harvey for quite a while, he calls me his protege. Every time I get to work with him I get so excited, he’s always giving me tips and motivating me, he’s very talented and super entertaining. The thing I love the most about working with Mr.Harvey is he’s very professional and he always manages my work behind the camera to help me become better.

Why did you choose Ruben Stunner for your photographer? What was the best part of the day?
Marc Harvey referred us to Ruben Stunner because of his experience, (he shot a Guess model recently- super cool) I have been able to shoot with him now twice, once at the very beginning and recently, it was really awesome to see how far I have come :)

Tell us about your modeling career.
My modeling career is a lot of work and started recently in November of 2021. I was super excited because this was something I have always wanted to do. Modeling is everything from posing, discipline, fashion, keeping your energy up, keeping your face clean, eating healthy, exercising, and practicing - it’s a lot of work but very rewarding … I did my first professional photo shoot with Marc Harvey and Ruben Stunner, they helped me build my initial portfolio -and to be completely Frank, it was very nerve-racking. In January of 2022, I was scouted by an agency that now represents me. In a small amount of time I have been to NYFW, I have taken a 7-week runway class, I walked on a runway in Houston for 4 scenes, and I have had about 6 photoshoots with 4 different high-profile photographers and I am ready & looking forward to photoshoots and runway in fall for NYFW!

What do you love most about modeling?
Well, I love the photoshoots the most because I love posing and it’s natural for me. I also like that I get to travel to new places and meet new people.

What have you acted in and which has been your favorite?
I just started acting, I was in the theater at school last year and I am excited about making the production theater this year. I was in a group acting school last year and switch to a private instructor this summer. I’ve done some incredible castings as well but sadly haven’t scored a role yet, but I do have an agent and hopefully, I get into something that fits my skills soon. But if I have to choose, it would be my Cinderella play that I did in middle school, I was one of the step-sisters and I felt like I fit that part so well.

Share your dance career with us. When did you get started and what dances do you practice?
Well, I got started when I was very young, maybe around 4 with tap and ballet, I did dance classes for a while but then needed something more intensive. At the age of 7, I joined a competitive salsa group called “El Sabor de Houston”. I worked very hard many hours a day to compete & met some very good teen friends.
Right now I’m in dance at my school and looking forward to the dance team when I get to high school.

What do u think non-dancers don’t realize about dancers?
To be honest, I think they don’t realize how much time and effort u put into dance, I mean it looks easy but In reality, it’s really not. I consider it a sport because it’s just as active as football or baseball if not, more. I'm currently burning 300 calories a day or more because I am active so much.

What type of music do you like to sing? Do you have a favorite go-to song? What is it?
I like to sing anything in the range of 50’s songs to current generation songs. My go-to favorite song for karaoke is Olivia Rodrigo, I love her so much, and hopefully, when I launch some music of my own I will get to collaborate with her, she’s so sweet and she’s literally my idol.

Tell us a favorite memory from singing.
My favorite memory of singing is probably the first time I ever sang with my grandpa. I loved watching a children’s show called “Olivia” and I would sing it all the time and my grandpa would sing it with me.

What is a favorite accomplishment from modeling, acting, or dancing?
My favorite modeling accomplishment is recently I cast for NYFW this fall in NYC for a couture line. Follow me and you will get to see who it is soon!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I think it was my fear of rollercoasters, I hated them growing up and once I went on one I felt so much better.

What advice would u give to someone who wants to be where u are today?
Probably to always be you. Growing up, I got bullied a lot which grew into insecurities and I was really never myself but if u just be yourself, you’ll get through, Don’t be someone you are not.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Well, I’m currently 12 so I’ll be about 17, my plans are to succeed in school, get a car ( I’m looking forward to that) and probably to travel a lot more. Now if I do get a cast for a movie I’ll have to switch to homeschool and eventually when I turn 18 I want to go to NYU. At some point, I want an apartment in Paris.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love hanging out with my best friends, they mean the world to me whether they are on my Facetime screen or in person.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is that I can tie and untie a cherry stem in my mouth. I know, cool, right?

3 Things on your bucket list
Paris, Met Gala, Oscars

Who do you find inspiring?
Olivia Rodrigo, she’s so sweet and inspiring and she’s my biggest role model, hopefully, I get to meet her one day.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Probably my kindness, I’m always putting people first before myself because they deserve it. I think I’m inspiring because I’ve had a lot of struggles that most teens go through, and I overcome them in a positive manner whether it’s dance, reading, or even modeling.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I’m thankful for the struggles that I’ve been through all my life, especially bullying, because if I didn’t have all of these struggles, I wouldn’t be strong and who I am today.

How do you help build confidence in girls of all ages?
I have found that sharing my experiences with girls of all ages helps them relate so much more. When I can fully understand and relate to different girls’ struggles, situations, and questions it helps me encourage them and build them up! Also, applying bible verses that have helped me through my daily life, that I pray will impact them as well.

Give an example of how you have helped inspire someone struggling.
I believe that I have helped inspire someone by simply showing up for them. Pursuing them and encouraging through my actions, and implementing my faith as best as I can. I want them to recognize how strong they really are, and I try my hardest to lead by example.

What are some similarities you see between you and your sister?
My sister and I are very strong minded, hardworking individuals. We both never give up when obstacles come. She also has such a caring heart, that is encouraging. I have loved seeing her bloom into the girl she is today, and I’m so grateful I’ve gotten to be the one to help her!

What are some things you love doing with your family?
My family is one of the most important things to me, and I love spending quality time with them. Once a week we all get together for a family dinner, it’s one of my favorite days of the week. Any chance that I get a moment with my family I hold close to my heart. We are all very close knit and I thank God for the family He has blessed me with!

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Read Photography for your photographer?
I found out about Angie Read Photography through my friend, Summer White, who was on her previous Power Team! I saw how amazing the pictures were, all different girls from different schools, and the awesome benefits! Angie Read is so kindhearted and the Power Team is such an awesome thing to be a part of!

What has your experience been like on her power team? What did you love most about it?
I absolutely love being on the Power Team!! It’s so exciting getting to see which location we are going to next, meeting the girls, and the service events that we have! Being apart of Power Team opens so many doors of opportunity and is the highlight to my senior year!

How has God impacted your life?
God is the key to everything in my life, just when I think something is going wrong, He opens another door. He is the one I can/will always be able to rely on, He’s picked me up after countless times of falling down. He’s helped me recognize my full potential and worth. He’s given me the gift of wanting to help people. All I want to do is share what God has taught me to others.

How do you use that to help others?
I use what God has revealed and taught me to help others and give them someone that they can relate to. Even at times when I am afraid to share, God gives me words to speak. God put us on this Earth to share His love, so I’m trying my best to do just that!

Tell us about your volunteer opportunities through church.
I love helping in the children’s Sunday school at my church, Community of Hope! I have always loved kids and helping teach them, especially about Jesus! I have grown up watching younger siblings and many cousins, so God well prepared me to help teach and take care of children!!

What have you learned about yourself through giving service to others?
Serving is such a great feeling, knowing that you are helping others without getting anything in return. When I serve others it makes my soul happy, and that hopefully I am making an impact on someone’s life.

Tell us about your cheer career. When did you get started and where are you with it now?
I started cheer 7 years ago, when I was in sixth grade! l had always wanted to be a cheerleader since I was little, but I was so shy, insecure, and fearful. God knew what He was doing when He brought cheerleading into my life. It completely changed who I was, I became confident, stronger, a leader, and most importantly I believed in myself. Now I am a senior in high school, varsity cheer captain, and getting ready to cheer in college. All I can say is God took me out of my comfort zone and changed my life! With God all things are possible!

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment with your cheer team?
My absolute favorite cheer memory is from my freshmen year of high school. My team and I won the TAPPS state championship, and it was the best feeling! It was the first time I had ever competed and the team had such a great time together. We all were so close and worked so hard for the moment we had been waiting for!

What do you hope your peers always remember you for after graduation?
I hope to be remembered by my leadership after I graduate. That I did my job to help lead them in the best way possible, that they remember me by my actions and most importantly I hope I reached them through my faith that I have in Jesus!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever had to accomplish is my own insecurities. Though I very well have to battle them daily, God has revealed to me where my strength and beauty lies, which is within!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Anything is possible with God, if you want to do something you need to go out and do it!! Never cut yourself short of your greatness! God gives everyone a purpose, believe in yourself and do what you love! Don’t believe in the lies that the world tells you, believe in the truth that God gives you!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to spend time with my family and friends!! Also, I love going to concerts, country dancing, and enjoying quality time with people! The best times I’ve had are when there was never a plan and I just enjoyed myself!

3 Things on your bucket list.
Three things on my bucket list would have to be, traveling to Greece, seeing George Strait in concert, and having my own clothing line!!

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom is the person that I look up to and find inspiring. She is the most beautiful, God fearing, strongest woman I know! She is my best friend and I don’t know where I would be without her!

Whitney Ball - Maine
Nomination by Torie Lavoie
Photography by StewartSmithPhotography.com
Issue 58 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Whitney has been an inspiring young girl as long as I can remember. She has had heavy life challenges, including her daddy’s death at a young age and her brother's brave battle with cancer, yet always remained positive and someone to look up to. Since her brother's remission she has focused on raising money for patients going through cancer. Watching her turn negatives into positives is something I continually look forward to. Now, as Whitney is entering her sophomore year in high school she is also competing for Teen Maine and hoping to continue to inspire young girls to be empowered.

What would you most like to talk about in your interview?
How I love to support community oncology and making a difference in patients’ lives. Also, my journey to USOA Teen Maine!

Tell us about your support for community oncology. How did you get started with this and what are you doing now?
Cancer started affecting me in 2016 when my aunt lost her battle to breast cancer. Around this time was when I started getting involved. Over the years I have done a bottle drive for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, decorated bags in honor of patients for Relay for Life, put together many food baskets for patients and families every year, and more. Cancer struck yet again in 2018 when my brother was diagnosed with leukemia. The feeling after hearing your loved one is sick is something I never want anyone to go through, which is why I do everything I can to help.

Where do you hope to go with this?
This is something I hope to continue with all my life. Cancer isn’t something that is just going to go away, so the least I can do is raise money, food, and support for patients and their families and hope it makes a difference in their life.

What leadership opportunities have you had in this endeavor?
I am actually starting my own fundraisers soon. My community service project for the USOA Teen Maine Pageant is helping cancer patients with food insecurity. I will be collecting bottles again and collecting animal food for the patient’s pets as well. I am so excited to see how much of a difference my community can make under a fundraiser I’m running.

What have you learned about yourself in the process?
I know that I love helping people more than anything.

What was your journey like to USOA Teen Maine? What made you decide to do it, what were your first steps?
I am currently USOA Teen Gorham competing for USOA Teen Maine at the pageant in October, but so far it’s been really fun! I always thought pageants were so competitive, but this one is so different. All the contestants are really supportive of each other. You kind of forget it’s a competition, it’s really all about building friendships. I’ve never even thought about being in a pageant, I had a photo shoot with Stewart Smith just for fun, but I was scouted only a few days after and knew it would be an exciting opportunity!

What was the hardest part of the competition and what did you do to get past it?
Like I said, I went into the shoot with Stew thinking nothing would come out of it, but I was asked to participate in the pageant by the executive director! So, the hardest part so far has been joining in so late. Some of these girls have been involved for many months and for me it’s been 3 weeks. I have to cram coaching, events, fees, deadlines, and shopping into a shorter time span, but it’s worth it!

How did you find and why did you choose Stewart Smith Photography for your photographer?

My mom came across his work from mutual friends online and wanted me to do it for fun and potentially begin a modeling career.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
It was such a good experience. I went in a little nervous of course because I had never done anything like that before. The nerves faded so quickly though. Stew is so welcoming and professional. He directs you throughout the whole thing, which I loved because I never know how to pose. You can really see his passion for what he does. We got this really good shot and he couldn’t even contain his excitement! The moment was just so happy. That was probably what I loved most.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

Especially for younger kids, my ability to keep high honor grades all throughout my middle school and high school years is inspiring and something to work for.

Why is achieving high honors important to you?
Getting high honors is a reward to me after all my hard work. It makes the people around me proud, which makes me happy. Us teens can be really hard on ourselves, but reaching a goal like this is a reason to just stop and appreciate yourself.

What are some tips you have for teens struggling to balance it all?
This sounds obvious, but being organized! Make a schedule, make a to-do list of all your assignments you need to complete, take advantage of your study halls, and know when you’re going to be busy! Having set times to study or finish assignments is so much easier than rushing the night before they’re due. I promise when you get to check things off your to-do list it’s extremely relieving and rewarding!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would inform people on food insecurity and the need that some patients have when battling cancer. Cancer hits close to home in our family, so I love to spread awareness, speak out, and help the community.
