How long have you been modeling? What are some of your favorite shoots you have done and why?
I started modeling 2 years ago with GMS on a competition. Some of my favorite shoots were at Rincon of the Seas for the West Fashion Week, where I participated in a modeling activity and my photos were published in the newspaper Metro. My favorite is the latest shooting at a field located in the town of Lajas with Korales Photography, photos attached.

What designers have you modeled for? Tell me more about these experiences!
I had modeled for several excellent designers. Mel Duran was the first designer that believed in me to be a model. Diana Rosado, who had designed several dresses for my pageant competitions. José Braulio, who design my West Fashion Week dress. Mildred Gonzalez who design my dresses for many special activities. Many others had helped me and requested to model their designs or accessories. Among them, must mention Zorimar Battle, Marie Nellí, María Ortíz Luaces, Yovana Avilés, Lourdes Arroyo, Mimi Marcano, Cely Nieves, Hilas Moda, Jossie Medina, Sugeidy Pérez, Brian Díaz, Ingrid Tejada, Emmanuel Alverio, Grisel Barrios, Juan Colon and Addis De León.

Tell me more about the movies and tv shows you have acted in! What goes on behind the scenes that many people might not know about?
I had participated as extra in a movie and Amazon series filmed in PR. Also, for a Puerto Rican movie. I enjoyed it and learned a lot from other decades and the hot songs of that time. Behind the scenes they remind you that you can't take pictures with artists or ask for autographs because it's a job and they are focused on their scenes. He is sacrificed and there are many people working for those scenes to be achieved. Silence and instructions are required.

What or who inspired you to want to become a pilot? Why?

I started to participate in Girls in Aviation program 4 years ago. I was interested because they promoted increasing the number of talented women in the aviation business.

Were you scared to fly a plane for the first time? What is something that surprised you about flying?
Yes, I felt fear but also a lot of emotion and I was pleased. I felt free and it was a lot of fun. It was an unforgettable experience. The most surprising thing was the spectacular view and the landscapes of my country that can be appreciated from another perspective.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The most difficult thing that I have had to live have been the unexpected events that have occurred in my country. Hurricane Maria first. Then the earthquakes and finally the COVID-19.
With Hurricane Maria I used art to express myself. As a result, my work was selected for the Los Hijos de Maria art exhibition. Help and collaborate to the extent possible for Puerto Rico to Stand Up.
We are still dealing with earthquakes because telluric movements are still being experienced. Helped by collecting and delivering books and board games to take to the children of families that were affected by the strongest earthquake that was in January 2020. Of which I have also been affected by the proximity of my home to the epicenters.
COVID-19 has been very difficult because I have had to make adaptations to be able to take workshops and virtual courses. They have suspended modeling events and aviation camp where I was going to be able to continue my flying hours. And the most difficult thing is not being able to share with my families and friends. I have looked for virtual alternatives to keep in touch with them and my teachers. I've taken virtual dance and aviation camps. I started my 12th grade virtually. In my spare time I wear makeup and make videos to entertain myself.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

My advice will be to believe in themselves. Always look for the positive things and always have a goal. Do your best and be persistent. I will tell them to develop their talents and do things they enjoy. Also, to dare, participate in what you like and be inspired by good role models. Those good experiences that we seek will always lead us to other opportunities to develop ourselves. You must seek to learn something and always keep going.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I look myself as a pilot. In modeling I envision myself becoming an international model. Also, will open a boutique with my mother called Pao Boutique.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activities are makeup, making videos, and dancing.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes, my hidden talent is drawing. Love to draw and paint to relax and enjoy a little time alone.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Bullying or Resilience, because they are topics that I find important. I have been an ambassador for a non-profit organization Chicas by Alejandra that seeks to combat bullying and injustice, advancement and happiness for girls and young people in my country.
Resilience because I have had to be resilient after Hurricane Maria, the earthquakes and COVID-19.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to New York (New York Fashion Week)
Travel to Europa
Visit and work at the Animal Sanctuary

Who do you find inspiring?
In the world of modeling, I find inspiration in the models: Kendall Nicole Jenner, Naomi Campbell, Joan Smalls Rodriguez and Madison Anderson Berrios (Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2019). I admire them and would love to meet them one day.
In aviation I admire Lieutenant Colonel Olga E. Custodio, who is a distinguished Puerto Rican. (Former US Air Force officer and first Hispanic female Air Force pilot). Who I had the opportunity to meet during the International Woman in Aviation Conference (WAI 2020).

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that at my young age I have had many opportunities and experiences that I like and enjoy. I have obtained achievements for my effort and determination. I don't give up and go for more.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I am grateful to all the people who have given me opportunities and have contributed to who I am. Thank God who always accompanies me, my family who gives me their love, they are the # 1 fans, they follow me in my adventures and they are unconditional, my teachers, my fellow townspeople, the dance groups that I have been part of, to the producers of the events that I have participated, to the designers for whom I have modeled, to the promoters and organizers of beauty contests, to the organizations that I have been part of, to my friends and my followers for their support always. I have learned something from everyone and they have been part of my training. Thanks for believing in me!
To young people: I invite you to promote your self-esteem and self-knowledge. Let them be themselves. May they strive for their goals and dare. May they be humble but proud of who they are and what they accomplish. Nothing is impossible. That they accept challenges and go to them always.
To the Inspiring Teens Magazine team: Thank you for your initiative and efforts to seek to inspire young people and thank you for the opportunity you gave me.

AnnMarie Brumley – Louisiana
Interview by Claire Plath.
Nomination by Mindy Rose.
Photography by Luckett Portrait Studios.
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine.

The Nomination: AnnMarie Brumley is a teen dancer with multiple rare disabilities. Some are visible; some invisible she hasn’t let this get in the way of her reaching her dreams, and she keeps dancing to the best of her abilities. Even after having spinal surgery it truly amazing that she has the passion for it.
Picture

What do you love most about dance, and how has it impacted your daily life?
What I love most about dance is that we are all a big family. We all take care of one another, and I think that is an essential part of being a team. When I first started back with dance, I ended up in the hospital, and the girls visited me, then I had surgery a few months later. They have all been there to help me and get through my battles. Dance has also taught me how to be part of a team and sew a little bit.

How have you overcome having multiple rare disabilities by keeping a positive outlook and continuing to pursue your passion in dance?
Overcoming rare disabilities by keeping a positive outlook and pursuing my passion for dance hasn't been easy, but I keep a goal in mind and reached for the stars. What I learned through dealing with everything I have gone through is all you need is a little patience and some chocolate cake.

Picture
Photography by Luckett Portrait Studios

How has dance become an outlet for you to express yourself in a different way?
It's indeed become my way to take whatever is going on that day and put it into my dancing. It can make it fun, and it can make it serious, make it sad, and think of it as Disney's Inside Out but dancing style.

How have you managed being involved in many different activities while also dedicating your time to dance?
I've managed to be involved in different activities while dedicating my time to dance because I attend a virtual public school. So, I do all my schoolwork from home. As soon as my work is done for the day I get to go to dance or do anything else I need to get done.

Tell me about the program 2020 class of the St. Jude Leadership society you are a part of and being State Officer for Louisiana DECA. What responsibilities does it come with?
St. Jude Leadership Society is a leadership experience for high school students who like to give back to their community by promoting and supporting the mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in high schools and colleges around the world. As a State Officer, my position makes me responsible for initial member recruitment, branding, promotions, correspondence, and social media.

What advice would you give to other teens to encourage them to stay true to who they are and to never be afraid to show the real them?
The one thing I could say is, don’t copy anyone. We always want to look like the popular kids at school, but we do not realize that there is someone out there wanting to be like us. Be yourself, don't be someone else, don't be someone you're not. You're beautiful or handsome, just the way you are!

Allison Hooper - Illinois

Nomination and Photography by Whitney Atwood Photography
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Allison is a confident young lady with a very bright future ahead of her. She is not only beautiful on the outside but on the inside as well. She is a sweet girl who is always up for any idea I throw her way. It has been a pleasure photographing not only her 8th grade images but her senior ones as well. I have enjoyed watching her transform into the young lady she has become. Best of luck Allison in your future!

What do you love most about fashion and how have you been able to express yourself through it?

I love that I can express myself through fashion. I live in a small town and people get judged if you don’t fit the mold here. I have been able to break that mold and meet others that have dealt with the same issues that I have. I can express styles I love and feel free when I pick a design that fits my personality.

What challenges have you faced with having anxiety and OCD, but how have you overcome them in a positive way?
I have always had a fear of crowds with sports, friends, etc. I worry about will people talk to me, include me, judge me for who I am. I had horrible test anxiety at school, and it caused me to have ticks with my face and my ocd is with body image and trying to be perfect. I was able to see a mental health doctor and a counselor to help me cope with both anxiety and ocd. I had to tell myself to get up and go places like school or sporting events, and then I got a couple jobs that really pushed me too. I don’t want to be defined by my anxiety, but I am not ashamed of it either. It has made me become a very hard worker in every area of my life.

Picture
Photography by Whitney Atwood Photography

Tell me a little bit about the two jobs you are currently working at, and what it’s like in the work environment.
I currently work at Misty’s Media, Make-up and Boutique. I have been modeling the clothing line since I was 14. I love every minute of it. I have a great boss who has been there for me through all my anxiety and understands. She also co-owns a restaurant in Fairfield, Javalou and I waitress there. This has probably been my biggest blessing. It pushes me to meet new people and get out of my comfort zone. I have seen people in my town be very considerate and genuinely kind. Also, I have met some great friends working at both places.

What advice would you give to other teens who struggle with their mental health?
Get help, you’re not alone. You are the only person that can help yourself. Encourage yourself daily. Make sure to have a good support system of people that love and care about you and understand. Educate yourself and others around you about mental health. Take a break if you need one and listen to your body.

Picture
Photography by Whitney Atwood Photography

How have the obstacles you have overcome in your life inspired others through your encouraging and uplifting personality?
I have had the opportunity to be there for others I care about when they were dealing with mental health. They didn’t have to be alone. I whole heartily want to help anyone I can that is in need or hurting. I want the best for them and I am willing to stay around to help.

The Nomination: Haley Page is a bright student and athlete she gives her all at practice and is always making someone smile. She is very outgoing and friendly. When she gets set on something at practice she doesn’t stop until she’s done, she’s very determined.

What or who inspired you to start cheerleading? Who are some cheerleaders or athletes that you look up to?

In elementary school one of my friends wanted me to do an all-star team with her and I was like okay that sounds like fun and so I went and I loved it and we had one of the scariest coaches, O’Shea Parker however he has pushed me to be the best I can and he’s still currently my coach and helps with my high school team. A few cheerleaders I look up to are Gabi Butler, Morgan Simianer, and Whitney Hollman.

How long have you been cheering for? What is your favorite memory from your time cheering?
I started cheer when I was in 5th grade and haven’t stopped! My favorite memory from cheer is this year in February our team got a bid to go to nationals in Orlando at ESPN Wide World of Sports complex and we worked so hard and received 10th in the nation!

How did the global pandemic impact your cheerleading schedule for the fall? Is there a time that you went without being with your team? How did you push through that?
Currently the global pandemic has impacted many cheerleaders throughout the world. My team was supposed to attend UCA cheer camp at Panama City Beach however that got cancelled. Teams aren’t allowed to stunt because we are so close and, in each other’s face, but it sets us back because stunting is a big proportion of our scoresheets. There was a time period that we weren’t allowed to practice or tumble together and that was very challenging , however my teammates and I have been working on the little things such as sending cheers out for sideline and making sure we stretch outside of cheer for our jumps.
Picture
Photography by Renee page

What helps you balance your academics and cheerleading? What would be your advice to others who are trying to balance many things like you?
My coach is a big help in balancing these two for me personally. She makes sure we are on top of it in class and that we are doing our very best. My advice to other who are trying to balance is to do as much work in the classroom, so you don’t have much once you get home.

What are some goals that you have for your future? What would you like to be when you are older, and would you want to cheer in college?
I have many goals for myself in the future such as becoming a cheer coach as a side job of being an Orthodontist and having a happy family. I would love to cheer in college hopefully at Western Kentucky University but I know I have to work extremely hard but nothing is impossible!

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hard seat thing to accomplish or overcome in cheerleading is an injury. I broke my ankle in 8th grade and was out for a little while and once I got cleared it took time to get back into tumbling and going from no weight at all to bouncing and landing on it. After a lot of workouts and stretching I came back and was ready and became better.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Advice I would give to someone who wants to be in my place today is to never give up, always try your 100%, be the best you can be, and don’t make excuses for yourself. You control everything about you and if you want something there’s nothing stopping you except for yourself.

Picture
Photography by Red Elephant Studio
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I see myself halfway through medical/dental school getting ready to become an Orthodontist. Working extremely hard to do the best I can and hopefully move into a house with my spouse.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activity is to play with younger kids, we usually have a mini camp and the kids  and I love each other. I also take a class at my Highschool that let’s me go to the elementary school to help educated a class. The students adore me and always say good afternoon Miss Haley and give me big hugs!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I don’t really have a hidden talent or at least I haven’t discovered it but I’m good at tumbling!

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
It would be about cheerleading, mathematics, sports, and/or dental hygiene because I’m very passionate about these things and I could never get bored of talking about them!

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list is to stay in the medical field or become an Orthodontist and not give up, go noodling, I think it would be fun to catch a big fish, and to grow up and be happy with life and not struggle.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find many people inspiring however my mom is the women who has always been my number one supporter and will always have my back. She’s always looking for the best interest in me and leading me in the right directions.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe as a senior future possible captain on my cheer team and as co co-captain my previous year many of the new girls look up to me and they strive to be as determined as me. They love to show me their new skills and we get so excited for each other. They know I’m always rooting for them just as much as they are rooting for me.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Thank you so much for this opportunity!!

Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sarah Barksdale is a girl with a huge heart for others and for her dance & it shows in all she does. She is one of the best dancers I have ever seen & continues to push herself. She is immensely talented & has a true passion for dance.
Picture
Photography by Hope Mulanax Photography
When did you start dancing and what do you love so much about doing it?
I started dancing at age 2 and competitive dancing at age 5. I love that dance pushes me to work hard, be confident, and it brings out my competitive side.

What is your favorite kind of dance and why?
Contemporary is my favorite kind of dance because it puts other styles of dance together like lyrical and modern and I love the unique movements.

How does dancing help you cope with the hard times in life?
Dance helps me forget the hardest parts of my life. Right as I walk in the studio, I can forget everything negative that’s going on. Through dance, I can express the emotions that I’m feeling without saying a word.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

Tell me about some of your favorite dance accomplishments.
Some of my favorite accomplishments are winning 2 National Dance Championships at ages 6 and 16. I have also won scholarships to 2 professional dance workshops. I have performed in multiple shows called Kidz Roc at the Clay Cooper Theatre in Branson, Missouri and I’ve had the honor to assist world famous choreographers at the Talent on Parade Dance Directive workshops.

Tell me a little more about the Madison County Health Coalition group you are in.
The Madison County Health Coalition is a group of high school students that meet once a month, attend events for teens, do radio ads, speak to our local schools, and have an ad on a billboard in our town about teen drug use and vaping.

What advice would you give to someone to maintain a high GPA while do extra activities (e.g. sports and clubs/groups) like you?
The advice I would give is to always know that education is most important, be confident in yourself and your abilities, and maintain your drive and passion in all of your activities.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished is winning the National Dance Championship at age 16. My dance studio had to close as a direct result of the CoVid-19 pandemic, so I put in hours of practice at home, had confidence in myself, and was determined to do my very best the day I took the stage.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give would be to have passion, determination, a hard work ethic, and always be humble in winning and defeat.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I plan to go to college and in 5 years have a degree in dance and Diagnostic Medical Sonography. I want to have a career as an Ultrasound Technician and as a dance teacher. I also plan to be married and starting a family.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activities are riding mules and riding ATV’s with my family.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
No, I’ve been fortunate enough to have family and teachers help me find all of my talents. They see the potential in me even when I don’t see it in myself.

Picture
Photography by Hope Mulanax Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The topic I would present to my peers would definitely be dance because it has been a huge part of my life for 14 years. I feel like I could speak not just about the technique of it, but also about teamwork, work ethic, and how you can become a role model for younger kids.

3 Things on your bucket list
The 3 things on my bucket list are to visit Paris, France, go on a hot air balloon ride, and swim with dolphins.

Who do you find inspiring?
My sister, Emily inspires me. At 15, she was diagnosed with a kidney disease. However, that didn’t stop her from following her dreams. She is 22 now, owns a small business, is married, and just gave birth to my beautiful niece, Amelia.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my work ethic, personality, and dancing inspires others. I am a student teacher at my dance studio and I think my students see me as a role model they can look up to and I want them to see the best in me no matter the struggles that I might be going through.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I go to a public school during the day and I’m thankful to have a dance teacher who works the dance schedule around cheer practices and games in order to make sure I don’t have to miss a dance class.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like add that in 2015, I danced with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders at AT&T Stadium. In 2019, I appeared as an extra in the recently released movie “Max Winslow And The House Of Secrets” and I appeared in a music video to a song called “The Answers” written and performed by Emery Kelly for the movie soundtrack.

Nomination & Photography by April Mescher
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ryann Mescher was at the grocery store and saw the lady in front of her unable to pay for both food and menstrual products that week. This experience weighed on her, and she decided to do something about it because no one should have to choose between eating and having period supplies. Ryann started Femme Aid Collaborative to end period poverty in her community. She has raised over $50K and purchased, collected, and distributed over 650,000-period pieces to 18 local nonprofits in less than two years. Her goal is to end period poverty and period stigma in her community.

Did you ever think that Femme Aid Collaborative would take off like it did and that you would raise this much in 2 years?
No, once Femme Aid Collaborative and its mission hit the media, it took off. So much so, the original goal of collecting and distributing 100,000 pieces in one year was achieved within the first 60 days.

How did you spread the word about your organization?
I connected with local female social influencers, city officials, including the mayor, presented at a city commission meeting, contacted community businesses and the local media all to help bring awareness to this issue, what our mission was and how together we could end period poverty in Dayton, Ohio.

What are ways people can help stop period poverty in their community?
I would recommend contacting local nonprofits or schools to see if menstrual hygiene is a need, then to make a collection and donation strategy and goals around those specific needs. We started with three organizations and are now supporting eighteen monthly when they need help.

What are your personal goals for the future?
Going to college next year at the University of Dayton to study international business. What are your goals for Femme Aid Collaborative? To be able to continue to support the local nonprofits in Dayton, Ohio, while advocating for the schools in my community, to provide free access in bathrooms and budget for menstrual hygiene products like they do soap and toilet paper, keeping students in the classroom. My ultimate goal is to end period poverty in Dayton, Ohio, and to be a resource for others who would like to take on this issue in their communities.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Starting Femme Aid Collaborative. I had a lot of help and support from family, friends, and community mentors.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

What different sports do you play and how did you find a passion for sports?
I am active in cross country, basketball, track, and softball. I also play for a traveling softball team each fall and spring. I would say that I found my passion for sports through my small town. My town consists of about 1,400 people, which is pretty small. With that being said, it is a lot easier to be a four-sport athlete here. I have been playing since I was a second or third grader. As I have gotten older I realized that it is something I thoroughly enjoy and thrive off of.

Out of all the memories you have made through your sports teams which has been the most memorable? Why?
I have made many memories through my sports teams but beating the most wins in a season record in softball my sophomore year is my most memorable. Our team was thriving, and the atmosphere was so fun to be around.

What do you love so much about working with kids? Is this something you would want to do when you are older?
Working with kids has always been something that I enjoy. I started babysitting in fifth grade. Since then I have gained many more kids that I get the opportunity to babysit. I love working with them so much because I have a privilege of getting to help them grow and learn. Right now, working with kids in the future is not something I am looking to do.

Tell me more about being a Beachbody coach! What is this and what do you love so much about it?
I have been doing Beachbody workouts and using their products for a little over a year now, but I just started coaching in June. Beachbody coaching is helping people change their lifestyle for the better and helping them stay committed to their goals. Beachbody gets people connected to not only a fitness program, but also an eating plan. I love doing this because health and fitness is something I am passionate about and I want others to have the best lifestyle they can. I want to help others be their best selves.

What are some goals that you have for your future? Do you want to continue sports in college?
One of my biggest goals for my future is to attend college and graduate with a degree. I then want to start my career and later start a family. Like everyone, I want to be successful. Right now, continuing sports in college is up in the air.

How long have you been dancing and what do you love about it?

I have been dancing for 9 years now, I love being able to come into the studio and let everything go, I don’t have to worry about anything for the next day and even the past, I’m able to go in and feel the music and connect with it in a special way.

What is some of your biggest dance accomplishments?
I have won two 1st overall high score awards, a 1st place high point, I have also placed in top 5, as well as getting judges choice awards.
Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

How do you help younger kids at your dance studio?

My dance teacher is also working full time as a nurse, so my friends and I try to help out as much as we can, we help by teaching classes throughout the week, or when my dance teacher is in go in and help the kids stay focused.

Tell me about the unified sports program you have at your school.
Our school was just officially named a national unified champion high school, this programs all about helping children with disabilities be able to play sports, we go with them to games and play the games with them. It is also through special Olympics.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

Why is it important for kids with disabilities to be able to play sports like you?
Because I feel like they want to be just like everyone else, I want them to have fun, some days are bad days, but when they are happy every day is a good day, and for them to be able to play sports, it can keep them doing what they love.

What do you like about helping others?

I like helping others because I like seeing everyone happy. At school I’ll do little things like, holding open the door for others, providing a pencil or even paper if someone is of need, just small acts of kindness can really boost someone’s mood.

I know you have spent a lot of time figuring out your goals for your future. Tell me all about these goals you have!

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I want to do for my future career and what college I will fit best in. After doing plenty of research, I discovered I would like to attend Saginaw Valley State University with a Biochemistry major, in hopes to pursue genetic counseling as my career. As well as my academic goals, I have learned I would like to continue my softball career on the club team at SVSU rather than join a varsity team.

How did you figure out this is what you wanted to do?
During the pandemic, I spent most of my time researching different colleges. My main goal was to find the college I want to attend and then figure out what I want to do. I began to really like the idea of SVSU and started researching medical careers other than physicians. I knew what interested me and found Genetic Counseling based on my personal likings.

How long have you been researching these goals for? What inspired you to start researching them so deeply?
I started my research in my freshman year of high school. Once I had a lot of time on my hands from the pandemic, I dove deeper into the research. I had been wanting some idea as to what I wanted to do. I have always been interested in a career in the medical field. Once I found some ideas, I started job shadowing. I shadowed two career options and found neither was my fit. I plan to shadow a Genetic Counselor when possible.

Picture
Photography by Kenny Hekhuis Photography

Tell me more about how your past has helped influence your goals for the future!

I was born with a bilateral cleft lip. I started having surgeries when I was 5 months old. Being around this made me interested in the medical field. Growing up around my mom being a nurse also helped to spark the medical interest. I have been exposed to many different avenues of healthcare from everyday injuries to surgeries. 1 out of every 2,800 babies in the US are born with cleft lip. The fact that it happened to me interests me in helping others through genetic counseling. I have been so inspired to do whatever I can for others. Right now, one of the best ways I can help others is by donating blood. I have done this 4 times and plan to continue.

What is one piece of advice you have for others on how to stay positive?
Do what makes you happy. Everything happens for a reason but choose the things that make you happy. If you are ever torn between two things, choose the thing that makes you smile. Doing happy things help to make you a more positive and genuinely joyous person.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
One of the hardest things I’ve gone through is having surgery (in high school) during Christmas break of my sophomore year. This was my second fat graft. In this surgery, they took fat from my right hip and placed it in my lip. Two weeks later, I had to return to school with a bruised, swollen lip, a bruised hip, and a small limp. I pushed through and went to school. I stayed positive and upheld my normal personality.

Picture
Photography by Kenny Hekhuis Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Scars do not define who you are. Whether you have a physical scar from a past event, or an inner scare from hurtful words, you can spring forward.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I plan to be doing some kind of internship towards my career goal or starting school in a Graduate program.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
One of my favorite pastimes is coloring. I have many books and folders filled with completed coloring pages. No matter my mood, I will color. It helps to boost my mood after being sad or stressed, as well.
Another one of my pastimes is volunteering. I am in several clubs and committees through my school and my community where I volunteer and do what I can for others. This year, I became an officer for the NHS in my school. I am in Interact at my school, where I help volunteer for people in my community. I am in Be Nice, which helps raise awareness to mental illness. I am in Montcalm Youth Wellness Committee through my county, this is a group to raise awareness to substance abuse -- like vaping, smoking, and underage drinking.
Picture
Photography by Kenny Hekhuis Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

If I were to give a presentation it would likely be on the topic of passion. Finding a passion can help make you a happier person. For me, I found that researching is my passion, which has helped me figure out I would like to be a part of the research team for my job while in college. If I could explain to people how to find their passions, I could help make people happier and more positive.

3 Things on your bucket list
Take a trip to Italy
Go hiking out west
Go on a wildlife safari

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents to be very inspiring. We have always been a very close family. We go on family vacations, have family board games, family movie nights, family dinners, family pool days, and much more. My parents have worked so hard to be able to have these nice things and to give my sister and I the best life possible. My parents have inspired me to work hard, help others, and be a kind, genuine person. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I aspire to be like them, have a life like this, and always be close with my family when I am older.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel I am inspiring in the way I work hard in what I do. Whether it's in my schoolwork, my research, my volunteering, or softball, I always try to give 100%, and do what makes me happy. Being myself and doing what I love helps me to be happy, which I feel can be very inspiring.

Marcus Cornett - Ohio
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Cherie Eplion Photography
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Marcus is a hardworking teen. He homeschooled and took college classes his junior and senior year of high school. He maintained all A's in all his classes, had a 4.0 GPA and made the Dean’s list at his college. He earned enough credits to apply to the nursing program and is waiting to hear acceptance. He was able to maintain his good grades while also working 2 jobs and playing Varsity Hockey for Hilliard Hockey Club. He was chosen as team captain for his hockey team. He also won the MVP award and coaches award for the 2019/2020 season. He was also one of only 5 players chosen to play in the OSHL All Star game. He shows dedication and commitment in all he does and is also a kind, compassionate son, brother, and friend.

Picture
Photography by Cherie Eplion Photography

Who or what inspired you to start ice skating and playing hockey? Who are some athletes that you look up to?

My parents always had a big influence on me as a kid and only continue to influence my everyday life. My dad probably had the biggest influence on me to start ice skating from such a young age and learn to love the sport of hockey. When I was a kid I always watched him play and it had a great influence on me. A couple of athletes that I look up to are Nick Foligno and Jonathan Toews. They aren’t the most skilled athletes, but I respect their work ethic and mentality.

What is your favorite memory when playing hockey? Why?
My favorite memory when playing hockey was playing roller hockey with my friends. We would play at a nearby parking lot in town for sometimes hours straight. Being able to enjoy the sport of hockey with some of my closest friends has created some of my fondest memories

Picture
Photography by Cherie Eplion Photography

What is one lesson that the sport of hockey has taught you?
Staying disciplined and committed towards improving your team is one lesson that hockey has taught me. No amount of individual effort or success can replace working together as a team to win. A successful team comes from the players willing to work together and focus on the team’s success more than their personal stats.

Picture
Photography by Cherie Eplion Photography

Tell me about what it means to you knowing that your coaches chose you to win the MVP and coaches award and that you got selected as one of five players to play in the All Star game?

It was truly an honor to be chosen as the MVP and coaches award. It is an award that not many players are able to possess and being one of those players is a true privilege. I had a good time playing at the All-Star game and having the opportunity to represent my team was a great experience.

Picture

Besides starting the nursing program at your school, what are some other goals that you have for your future?
There are so many goals and milestones that I have yet to complete in my near future. Just a few of them could include obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, play for a Division 2 or higher college hockey team, and to travel more of the world. Although I have a long road ahead of me with many roadblocks, I am determined to improve not only myself, but the individuals around me as well.

4 years.

What is your role when you volunteer with Little Lighthouse? What do you love so much about working with them?

How did you get a spot on Little Lighthouse's Junior Board? What is your role in this position?

What has working with children and people of special needs taught you?
We all have a purpose. Success is measured differently for all people; we all have different abilities and celebrating our own level of accomplishments is amazing. Despite how society measures their abilities these kids are so happy and completely unphased by the opinions of others. We should all strive to live a life so focused on loving each other that we do not let the world distract us.

Picture
Photography by Amanda Hitchen Photography

How did you find your passion for musical therapy? What made you want to pursue it as a future career?
For as long as I can remember I have loved music; I play guitar and sing. Even as a young child I had an exceptional amount of love for children with disabilities as well as elderly that need extra care. My first summer at Little Light House I discovered that I could use my gifting of music and my love for children with special needs to help them learn and grown. It just all made perfect sense.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I want to encourage other teens to find what excites them and seek God for their calling. God places a calling on each of our lives and it is up to us to discover that calling and use it for His glory! Don’t try to copy someone else. We were all created unique with our own specific gifts. Nothing gives more joy, happiness, and confidence than living out God's plan for your life. Quit chasing popularity, life isn’t a contest about who is better. Life is truly about living your own calling.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
My plans are to attend Oral Roberts University. I would be a senior in college majoring in Musical Therapy. Working at the ORU Musical Therapy Clinic taking the final steps toward my degree and future career. Maybe I’ve found my person and will be engaged, planning a wedding

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I am on the Varsity Golf Team. Not sure anyone really loves golf, but I do enjoy spending a beautiful day on the course and competing against myself to get better.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Being confident in your uniqueness. Quit trying to impress everyone and consuming yourself with the opinions of others. Be the weird girl, the shy guy, the funny kid, the smart kid. Be athletic or musical. Just be You!

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I’m an only child with sibling pets; two Bulldogs, and one cat.
A member of National Honor Society
I serve in Champions Club at my church. A program for children with special needs
I am on the worship team at school where I lead worship and play the guitar

A few years ago at nationals our large group Jazz dance came in 5th place, which qualified us for the battle. We were very proud for getting 5th place, but we got the chance to compete again. At the awards ceremony for the battle, they play the music of the winning dance. Once we heard the first beat of the music, we knew it was ours. We came in first! I loved that dance! It was my favorite memory because we got the opportunity to preform our dance again and make it the best we could! #steamheat

Dance has taught me that I am not perfect, and I don’t have to be perfect. I work hard every day and in order to get better, I have to be teachable. Getting corrections is very important to me. Corrections help me get better, stronger, and it keeps me grounded.

What inspired you to start dancing? Who are some dancers that you look up to?

I have been dancing for as long as I can remember. I was born with hip dysplasia and high arches in my feet which caused my doctors to be concerned that I would not walk. My doctors recommended that my parents put me in dance to strengthen my lower body. From there, I completely fell in love with the art form. Some dancers I look up to are Maria Kowroski, Teresa Reichlen, and Sterling Hyltin, all principal dancers with New York City Ballet.

Tell me everything you possibly can about your nonprofit Peace Love Leotards!
I started Peace Love Leotards Inc. when I was eight because I was inspired by my mentors in the Miss Florida Organization who advocated for something they were passionate about. I wanted to do the same. I immediately thought of dance as what I was most passionate about. I knew dance was expensive so I decided to help combat the costs by collecting dancewear to distribute to dancers who needed it. Fast during quarantine, I decided to officially incorporate Peace Love Leotards and obtain its tax-exempt status. Since April, we have gained sponsorships from 7 dancewear companies, 1 retail store, and 2 corporate sponsors, and have received $5,200 in dancewear and $2,500 in monetary donations. We have launched our ambassador programs, and have been published in Pointe and Dance Spirit Magazines, 12 newspapers, and appeared on WFLA News Channel 8. We are currently in the process of working with arts programs at Title 1 Schools and other dance studios.

What are some goals you have for your future? Do you want to continue dancing? What are your goals for your nonprofit?
Yes, I absolutely want to continue dancing. My main goal is to be asked to join the New York City Ballet! I also want to attend college and obtain my Doctorate in sports psychology. My main goal for my nonprofit is to be able to bridge the socioeconomic gap in the performing arts because I believe that any child who wants to dance should have the opportunity to.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Being accepted into the School of American Ballet’s Winter Term Program when I was 14 years old which meant I would move away from home 4 years earlier than the average student. To be accepted, I had put so much hard work and time into my training. I knew that lots of hard work would eventually pay off. Moving away so young was quite difficult, but I would say in order to be successful in you have to be confident in yourself and that you can accomplish what you set out to accomplish no matter the difficulty. If you don’t have enough confidence in yourself to know you can make it on your own, then you won’t make it. I had to know that I was smart enough to make my own decisions. For example, about 3 weeks after I moved away, I injured my back dancing. I had to know it was a smart decision to go see the PT and the doctor and to be confident enough in myself to know those were smart decisions.

How did you get the honor of becoming Gainesville's outstanding teen? What was going through your mind when you found out you were their most outstanding teen?
Miss Gainesville’s Outstanding Teen is a preliminary to the Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Competition. I competed for the title in February and was so blessed to win! When they called my name as the winner I was beyond ecstatic as this is something I had wanted to participate in for so long. I absolutely love the Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen organization and to be able to represent the wonderful city of Gainesville is a bonus.

What is your favorite part of being Miss Gainesville's Outstand Teen?
Perhaps my favorite part of being Miss Gainesville’s Outstanding Teen is being a mentor to my protege, Taylor Finne. This is so special to me because I have always loved working with younger girls and because this is the program that inspired me to start Peace Love Leotards. My protege is a dancer and is so kind and talented. I absolutely love her, and I love knowing that I have the opportunity to be able to make an impact on her life as my mentors impacted my life!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Definitely believe in yourself and do not be afraid to go after what you want. Know that you are good enough to get to where you want to go, and if you have to, push yourself out of your comfort zone to accomplish your goals. To get connections and sponsorships for Peace Love Leotards, I had to reach out to people that I did not know, adults, established in their respective businesses. It was scary and outside my comfort zone especially because I’m not usually a bold person. But because I wanted to make Peace Love Leotards successful, I knew I had to be bold and go for it.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
A: I actually love photography and going to the beach. Taking photos of places and my friends is something that makes me so happy. I also love that I can capture special moments. As they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words. The beach has always been my favorite place. It is so relaxing and so beautiful. Plus, water activities are so much fun.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can wiggle my ears!

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about the importance of arts’ education because through the arts, a child’s creative thinking skills can improve as well as their STEM test scores. I have the opportunity to spread this message through Peace Love Leotards Inc. and as Miss Gainesville’s Outstanding Teen. Also, I currently am involved with Advanced Recovery System’s Real Talk Program, which is a comprehensive, educational program that teaches the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. I believe this topic is so important as the number of people addicted to these substances continues to rise every year and as teens, we are one of the most susceptible groups.

3 Things on your bucket list
The 3 main things on my bucket list are traveling to Europe, specifically Paris, dancing as a professional ballerina, and obtaining my Doctorate degree in psychology.

Who do you find inspiring?
Definitely my mom. She embodies everything I want to be in life. She is kind, talented, and hard-working. She is not afraid to accomplish her goals and go after what she wants. She has also taught me so many important lessons throughout my life, one of the most memorable would be her telling me that “I could be anything I wanted to be in life accept a mean girl.” This enforced in my head that I could accomplish anything that I wanted, but that I needed to be kind in the process. She is truly the most amazing person, and I love her so much.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I have always found this question so difficult to answer because it is hard to pinpoint what draws one person to another especially when that person is yourself. However, I believe that I am inspiring because I believe that in all that I have ever accomplished I have remained kind. Kindness will take you so far in life. It leaves a positive, lasting impact on people.

After college, she aims to pursue a career in advertising and marketing.

How did you get involved with Inspiring Teens Magazine and what does your role as editor entail? What do you like most about being involved with so many teens from all over the world through it?
I initially wrote articles and participated in photoshoots for the magazine starting my freshman year of high school. Over the years I have had a couple of ideas on how to improve the magazine and keep things fresh, so I was very happy to accept the editor position at the start of my junior year. My primary responsibility is to review all interview submissions from nominated teens and edit their writing, without altering their stories. One of my favorite parts of my position is leading our online international meetings where members come together to develop leadership conferences and global service projects. I love getting to know and speak with the inspiring teens who I read so much about!

What do you like so much about being a leader?
Being a leader is important to me because I have the opportunity to foster a collaborative community and I get to uplift others. People look up to you as a leader, and I enjoy carrying that responsibility.

What are your duties as a class’ public relations officer?
As the public relations officer, I control the class profile on social media platforms and use these platforms, as well as regular print media, to share and receive information with the student population. I also work with the other student officers to plan and run popular events such as the Homecoming Dance, Junior Prom, Fall Festival, and Senior Prom.

How do you balance extra circulars and your leadership positions while maintaining top 10% in your class?
Most of my extracurriculars and leadership positions revolve around subjects that I already work on in school, so I like to view these activities as extensions of my learning outside the classroom. Additionally, I find it best to take challenging classes that you’re truly interested in because then you will have more motivation to learn and excel. For example, I choose to take more English and history courses because I know that I’m willing to put in the effort for subjects I love.

Picture

What kind of fashion do you like to design, why?
I like to blend contemporary and artistic fashion because there is something incredibly satisfying about wearing clothes that I’ve designed myself, but it is also rewarding to see more experimental ideas come to life. I was fortunate enough to spend some of last summer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago learning all about fashion design through the lens of fabric manipulation and dimensional art.

What is your favorite kind of story, why?
While I do have a soft spot for certain historical tales, my favorite type of stories are primarily realistic or dystopian fiction. In general, I enjoy a book with good character development, appropriate pacing, unique point (or points) of view, and a distinctive voice. Some memorable books that I’ve read recently are Disappearing Earth and Normal People.

How does everything you do keep you so focused on your final goal?
Storytelling is a big part of my identity given that I often incorporate it in all my creative and even academic ventures. I know that I can use a strength like this in the future within an advertising or marketing career because I will need to analyze situations from multiple viewpoints. Knowing this furthermore encourages me to continue expressing myself and seek new experiences from which to learn.

It was the opportunity of a life time, and I am so grateful to have been given such an opportunity!!

How do you balance your various clubs, dance, cheer, softball and your schoolwork?
Time management!! When I am at school, I use all of the time I have to finish my work and study for any tests coming up! It also requires me to be organized and prepared ahead of time!

Tell me about the Alligator festival? What is the process like to be chosen as the Alligator Queen?
The Alligator Festival is put on by the Rotary Club of St. Charles Parish to raise money for scholarships. The scholarships are given out to local students. To be chosen as the 2019 Teen Alligator Queen, I had to compete in a pageant. The pageant included: an interview, a themed outfit, and a formal dress.

When I was asked to reign another year because of COVID-19, I was so excited! Being able to reign another whole year, representing something I love, I took that opportunity in a heartbeat! When a little girl notices your crown and banner at a queen event, their eyes light up, and it is the absolute best feeling in the world! It means the world to me that so many young people look up to me! I try my hardest to set the best example I can for young girls!

What inspired you to want to start swimming and to join the swim team? Who are some athletes that you look up to?
My parents are the ones who inspired me to start swimming and join the swim team. I grew up in the water because I do not remember a time when I had not been swimming. I joined the team at age 6 and have been working my way up to more competitive teams since.

What is your favorite memory from being on your swim team?
My favorite memory from being on my swim team is probably driving to practice with one of the other girls on the team early in the morning or playing water polo together on Saturdays. Our new coach, this summer let us play water polo after hard practices.

What is a lesson that swimming has taught you that you will never forget and think that everyone should hear?
One lesson that swimming has taught me is time management. I have had to learn time management since I practice an hour away from my house and also have school. I have to go to school, get all of my homework done, drive to practice, and still make time for extra activities that I want to do with my friends or family. This is a good life skill to have because it will help me in the future when I go to college and when I get a job.

Nomination by TARA JO SWYGMAN
Photography David Schlatter Photography
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Rylee Swygman is inspiring because she is smart, witty, confident...yet humble. She is an active role model to many of her fellow cheer teammates, her classmates, and her friends. She enjoys helping and teaching younger athletes with cheer when she can, Rylee has always set a goal for herself. When she accomplishes that goal, she strives for another. Rylee's a patient, kind, and a supportive individual.

When did you get involved in cheer?  What or who inspired you to start cheering?
I got involved in cheer about 5 years ago.  I had been involved in gymnastics since I was about three where I lived in a really small town in Minnesota.  My family moved to the Colorado area, and when I watched cheer for the first time, I just instantly connected with it.  I learned to incorporate all my tumbling, as well as add in the dance and stunting. I became a flyer on the team.  It felt so good to walk into the gym, be amongst coaches and fellow cheer athletes, and just express yourself.  We all became a team, and we all have inspired each other.

What different competitions have you competed in throughout your timing doing Allstar Cheer?  Which of these have you won or placed in?
I have competed in many competitions throughout the past 5 years.  Our teams have traveled to many local competitions in Denver, and states such as Texas, Georgia, Oregon, Utah, and Florida.  A few of the competitions have been UCA, PAC-West, American Legacy, One-Up, NCA, Cheersport, and Summit. There have been many competitions our team has placed in, but the ones that stand out to me the most are:  1st in PAC-West and in American Legacy, 2nd at Cheersport and 3rd at NCA.
Picture
Photography David Schlatter Photography
What are your most memorable moments from doing AllStar Cheer?  Tell me all about it!
My most memorable moments from AllStar cheer have been in Atlanta, Georgia at Cheersport, and at NCA in Dallas (the largest cheerleading competition in the world).  When I went to Atlanta Georgia, I loved learning the culture of the south, and all about the amazing people. At NCA in Dallas, the atmosphere is magnetic.  There are thousands of people, cameras flashing, and a building downtown that lights up red, white, and blue during competition time.  At NCA, I have been lucky enough to meet elite cheerleaders such as Ryan Cummings and Kennedy Thames, and some of the athletes at Navarro College.

What does it mean to you knowing that you are a role model for your fellow teammates?
It means a lot to me.  I’ve tried throughout my career to make a difference and to show younger athletes how to have fun and to overcome challenges.  I try to teach fellow athletes that cheer can be an outlet for so many stressors. An athlete might be able to tumble better than they can stunt, or stunt better than they can dance.  Build on your strengths, and work on your weaknesses, and you’ll be the best well-rounded athlete!

Picture
Photography David Schlatter Photography

What are some goals that you have for your future?  Would you like to continue cheer as you get older?
A goal I have for the future is to try modeling. A great pastime of mine is taking photos with friends. With modeling, I can be myself, but also put on that acting face!
I do see cheer in my future for a few more years.  After high school, I’d like to attend a college in Florida or California.  I love the beach, the people, the energy, and the environment.  I want to earn a degree helping others, being a good mentor and an inspiration.

When did you start dancing? Are there dancers who inspire you and who you look up to?
I started dancing in 2007 when I was 2 years old. I have been dancing for 13 years. As a toddler, I was too young to have a specific person be my inspiration for wanting to dance. My mother enrolled me in a class, and I loved it. However, I have had many wonderful dance teachers throughout the years who have inspired me to work hard and grow as a dancer.

What is your favorite memory from dance?
My favorite memories from dance are always made at the end of the year recital. We work all year for one section of time, and we have one chance to make it perfect. It feels amazing after a show when everything goes right, and I can celebrate with my 5 Star Dance Centre family.

Can you tell me more about Dyslexia and Dysgraphia? What would you like to share about it and how does it impact your life?
Dyslexia and Dysgraphia are unique to those that have it. Statistically, one in five people have some form of Dyslexia. Dyslexia affects the ability to spell and read. While Dysgraphia affects handwriting and motor skills. I have a hard time getting my thoughts written out in a way that is not only spelled correctly but makes sense to others. I am thankful for all the accommodations and help that I have been given for me to be successful in school. Having a learning disability has made me stronger in other areas such as dance and art.

How have you overcome Dyslexia and Dysgraphia and who has helped you to overcome them?
After my diagnosis in 2nd grade, I had a Dyslexia tutor for four years. My school provides me with accommodations that are specific to my educational needs. I have been able to stay on Honor Roll with hard work and the support of my teachers and family. I ended my Freshman Year with a 4.2 weighted GPA. Dyslexia and Dysgraphia is not something you necessarily overcome. I feel that discussing my experiences with others has not only helped me but brought much needed awareness.

Another favorite hobby of mine is reading. My book collection is ever-growing.

Kristina Camacho – New Jersey
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Katherine Camacho
Photography by Catia Conde
Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kristina is an inspirational teen for several reasons. Leader for student council since the 4th grade. She’s currently the Treasurer for her Junior class at The Academy of Allied Health of Sciences in Scotch Plains. She is a kind warm soul. She created a group all The Youth Mindset which helps teens with mental health especially during the pandemic. The Link on IG is @theyouthmindset. Kristina also plays softball her #1 sport, she plays basketball in the winter. cheers and plays the clarinet in the marching band. She’s a loyal individual and will not leave her brother Luis who is diagnosed with Autism who is also in the marching band, so she multitasks with cheer and marching band to stay loyal to band and her brother. She has 2 younger brothers and they adore her, and she is a huge role model for them and all her peers. She gets along with everyone and is always willing to help a friend when needed. When Kristina recurved a prefect Statewide test score in the 4th grade we knew there was something special with this kind soul. She always a pleasure to be around with her Contagious smile.
Picture

How did you get the idea to create the Youth Mindset?
A couple of my classmates and I realized that it is very common for someone to be stressed out to the point that they don’t know what to do, or may even suffer from depression and other mental illnesses. We also know that many teens find trouble asking for help or finding ways to destress and focus on themselves. So we as teens that witness this first hand, decided that we wanted to take charge of the situation and help. I, for one, would do anything to help a friend in need that might be upset or sad because I know I would want someone to help me, even though I would always help a person that needs it before myself.

Can you tell me more about the Youth Mindset? What you do and who you benefit?
On our instagram and website we provide many ways to destress and relax. We also have many articles, written by us, for people to become educated on different mental illnesses. We also have a live chat for anyone that may need to just talk to someone to let anything out and we chat back giving them advice on what they can do to help. We do not diagnose or give medicine because we don’t have the resources needed for that including a PhD. We mainly benefit high school students who suffer from anxiety, stress, depression, and other mental illnesses.

Picture

Where do you hope to take this not-for- profit?
I hope that this not- for- profit can become a country-wide resource for students who realize that they need help whether they are stressed out, having anxiety more often or are becoming depressed. One thing I hate is seeing others down and I really hope that this not- for- profit can get far in helping students in need like it is intended. We are currently trying to first get more followers on social media and raise enough money to be able to host events for students to come together and be able to talk to others and just have a relaxed day without having to have any worries or mainly just a way to get their minds off of being stressed or sad.

Tell me more about your school, The Academy for Allied Health Sciences. How is this school different from a regular high school?
My school is different from a regular high school in many ways. All our classes are high honors and AP courses. We also have health related classes such as Dynamics of Healthcare in Society, Medical Terminology, Emergency Clinical Care, and many more that we take each year. Some of these courses are hands-on and others are not. By the end of our four years we will know what it’s like to be in medical school and we will be CPR, First Aid, and EMT certified. I can admit that this school is extremely challenging and it is for those students who love a challenge and will push themselves all the way through.

Picture

How do you balance all your activities while helping out your brother and your family?
Ever since I was little I had to do my own chores and learn to help my brother who is on the spectrum. I make sure he does it himself however he sometimes needs a push to do it right. Now that I’m older, I have a lot more to manage with sports, school, and homework. I usually try to finish my homework as fast as possible so I can help my mom around the house or help my brother with his homework or even just talk to him about his day since he doesn’t talk much sometimes. If I know I am going to be up late with homework I will help and talk to my brother first and then work on it but I always make time for him and helping my family.
Picture
How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
One way I keep myself organized is having a planner or notebook to write everything down in. This is very helpful during school and especially if you have sports after school it helps you remember everything that needs to be done.

How has Autism affected you growing up?
I am not sure how it has affected me because it is my “normal”. I was not officially diagnosed until I was 11. I felt validated when I got the diagnosis; a lot of my life made sense then. I do have to work a little harder at some things than others might have to in the same situation.

I know that you model, how does having Autism affect you modeling? How is modeling for you different than for someone without Autism?
Changing wardrobe is hard due to sensory issues. I have worked hard to find ways to cope with the changes. Sometimes, I still need to work hard and hold it together to get through shoots. Photographers have told me I bring a lot of creativity to shoots. Mom thinks that comes from me being Autistic and seeing things in a different light. Modeling can be challenging, even for those without Autism. We all work hard in our own ways to be the best we can be.

What is a piece of advice that you would give others with a disability?
Just keep working! You can get to your dream, even if it is difficult at first. It has taken me several years to get to a point where I could start doing photo shoots and get on stage for acting. Along the way, I wanted to quit, but my parents have always encouraged me to keep going. Now I want to encourage others to do the same!

Tell me more about the blog that you want to start. How did you get the idea?
My mom thought it would be a great way for me to share what I have done. I hope it will inspire others to follow their dreams, no matter the obstacle. I want to share my journey, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I want others to see it and know that they can do it too!

Mom took this behind the scenes image on a shoot with Douglas Gustafson.

Why did you decide to volunteer with military families? Tell me more about what you do with them?
My mom was a volunteer, so I just joined her. My favorite thing was hanging out at the coffee table and offering support to other families. Being part of a military family means we all work together to support one another.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
If I am not a full-time model, or actress, I want to be a forensic pathologist. I have always been fascinated by science, forensics, and puzzles. Being a forensic pathologist puts all of those together and I can help people.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

I love cosplay! I enjoy making costumes and doing special effects make-up. Especially, of my favorite characters.

Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Aliya Jade Lewis is a name you should make note of now. She is going to be a superstar in the not so distant future! This young lady is an AP honor student, distinguished scholar, the captain of her high school tennis team, and a percussionist in the marching band. Aliya manages all of this while also working at the local Taco Bell and teaching tennis lessons to kids aged 5-12. Aliya also loves to sing and dreams of being a country music star like her hero, Dolly Parton. Aliya is a dedicated big sister and is always willing to take time out for her little brother. She has never met a stranger and has a beautiful, kind, and caring soul. Aliya is selfless, strong, and courageous, never fearing what the future holds for her.

What do you enjoy most about being captain of your high school’s tennis team, and what responsibilities does it come with?
I have been playing tennis since I was four years old. I always looked up to the Captain of the varsity team and always wanted to be in that position myself. Last year, I got my wish. Being Captain is more than just a title. It means that I need to keep team morale high and cheering on my teammates. In tennis, it also means setting up practices and helping the newer players on our team make game progress. It also means setup for JV tennis, devising fun games so players learn fundamental skills through team play. Being Captain also means working out team problems because no team is without them and sometimes that means helping teammates find solutions to problems that are not on the court.

Tell me a little bit about how you are musically involved, including being a percussionist in your school’s marching band while also having a passion for singing.
My family is very musically inclined. As a little girl, I would sing in my living room and pretend to be on stage for my Nonna all the time. As I got older, I started learning guitar, singing for small talent shows, and eventually joined my school band as a percussionist. In the last two years, I have started singing competitively and working to develop my personal style. There are a few famous singing drummers out there. Phil Collins, Ringo Starr, and Don Henley are just a few, so the idea of a singing drummer isn’t quite as crazy as it sounds. This year I am looking forward to our football and basketball seasons. I will either be leading the Raider Band from the percussion line in the National Anthem or belting it out as a vocalist all on my own. Either way, it is going to be a year to remember.

hat aspirations do you have for your future, including your dream of becoming a country music star?
I love country music! Right now, I am working with a voice coach, via Zoom because of the CoVid-19 pandemic, to build my range and learn different breathing techniques. My next big goal is to audition for The Voice. Go Team Blake! My ultimate dream, and my mama’s dream for me too, is to be CMA’s Entertainer of the Year someday.

How have you managed being an AP honor student, having a job, while also devoting your time to extracurricular activities such as tennis and the marching band?
It was really difficult at first. Making time to study was the hardest thing. On my breaks at work and on the bus to tennis matches or on the band bus, I would squeeze in a little bit of study time. Everyone else would be eating or sleeping while I am studying for my next big test. Mastering time management is the goal to success and I have definitely learned that skill by juggling school, work, and all of my extracurricular activities.

Can you tell me more about how you help teach lessons to younger kids in tennis and what you love most about it?
I have kept all of my tennis rackets from when I was little. At one point, I noticed they were just collecting dust and taking up space. I decided to put those rackets back to work for other kids in my area. I started by asking for help from my own tennis coaches for advice and then just started building on my own experiences. At first, we just hit the ball. I don’t worry if the ball was in bounds, we just want that kid to make contact with the ball and the ball to make it over the net. That's how I started playing tennis and it seems to be working for this group as well.

In what ways has your kind and caring personality impacted the lives of others you meet?

Mom tells me that I have a big heart. I guess that is really true. I want to make a positive impact on every single person that I make contact with in a day. If everyone took an extra 10 seconds to be nice to the stranger or to help out someone in need, our world would be a much kinder place. Plus, I’ve never met a stranger in my life! I think I could talk to absolutely anyone.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I think the hardest thing I have ever accomplished was singing on stage for the first time. I had never on in public before. I had never used a microphone. I put on my sparkly romper, walked onto the stage in front of 500 or so people, and gave it my all. You know what, I did ok. I didn’t win the competition but I conquered my fear. The next time I stood on stage, I was much more prepared and that time, I did win the competition.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Always take time for your passions. School is so important but so many times we forget that other parts of our lives are also important. Take time to sing, play an instrument, run a mile, collect stamps. Whatever your great passion is, take time to do it. Becoming a well rounded individual is just as important as being an honor student.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years I plan to be on my way to super stardom with a win from The Voice and a recording contract under my belt. Remember my name. I will be famous someday.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I really love to be outdoors with my family. We frequently visit Carter Caves State Park to camp or for the afternoon just to picnic and explore the caves and creeks. It is a beautiful place and I love spending time there. I have also recently added another sport to my resume. I am learning to golf! So far, it has been really fun!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I do! I am a cosplay Cinderella! My family is full of Disney fanatics, so it was only natural that I would be as well. In my spare time, I dress up as Cinderella, and sometimes other princesses, and go to birthday parties or events for kids. I get to live out my princess fantasy and those little kids get a thrill from meeting a real, live, Disney Princess. It’s awesome!

3 Things on your bucket list
My bucket list is quite long. I think the top three things would be:
to meet Dolly Parton
visit all the Disney Parks
to play the high school state tennis tournament.

Who do you find inspiring?
Dolly Parton is my idol. I would love to meet her someday. I love her music, her style, and her philosophy on life. She gives so much back to the community that made her great through programs like her Imagination Library, community donations and support after the 2016 Smoky Mountain Forest Fires, and so many other causes that she loves. I want to give back to my community in those same ways someday. I also love that she is a superstar despite coming from a very poor family in the Great Smoky Mountains of Eastern Tennessee. That takes serious hard work and dedication to break those generational cycles of poverty. She is truly one amazing woman and I hope that someday I can tell her just how inspirational her story has been to me.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I am not afraid to be me. I am never afraid to put myself out there and show the world what I have to offer. It doesn’t necessarily always work out the way I want, but I will never look back on my life and wonder what might have been.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Thanks for including me in Inspiring Teens! This has been a whole bunch of fun!
