Tell us more about your sports careers in basketball and soccer. What did it mean to you to be a captain of both? What legacies do you hope to leave behind?
Being a captain of the soccer and basketball teams meant a lot to me because it showed that my teammates looked up to me. As a captain, I was able to lead in a way that honored Christ on and off the field. Including others is a big part of my legacy because I know what it feels like to be excluded, and I want those around me to feel accepted.

What activities do you do with those with special needs and how did you get started?

I volunteer with many events for those with special needs, but the main one is working with them on Sunday mornings. We host a Sunday school class, so their guardians can go to their classes and attend the sermon. It also allows those with special needs to encounter Christ just like everyone else. I first started working with those with special needs in middle school at an event called TopSoccer. It gave those with special needs the opportunity to play soccer and stay active.

How often do you meet with them and what have you learned from these experiences?
Events are held throughout the year, but I volunteer with the ministry at Broadmoor Baptist Church once a month or fill in when extra help is needed. The main thing I’ve learned from these experiences is that I have more than enough and should be content with what I have. Those with special needs are always joyful and have a smile on their face which truly humbles me because they don’t allow their circumstances to determine their attitudes.

Tell us more about FCA (What does it stand for?) and what leadership roles did you have?

FCA stands for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It’s an organization that hosts Christian gatherings for athletes in high school and college. Because I was on the leadership team, I helped plan the meetings we had, and I even had the opportunity to speak at our meetings. FCA meets every Friday morning @7:15, and a different student or coach speaks. As part of the leadership team, people were always looking up to me, so it was important for me to watch my actions and make sure I was leading in a way that honored Christ.

What did you learn about leadership from SLi? What was your biggest accomplishment with them?
I learned that even though I’m an ordinary teenager, I can still make a difference in the world. Leadership also isn’t about gathering people to follow me because ultimately, it’s not about me. Leadership is me pursuing Christ and others following me because of Christ working through my life. My biggest accomplishment was going on mission trips to Jackson, MS and Orlando, FL and being able to share the love of Christ with those around me.

Sarah Robinson

Sarah Robinson – Mississippi
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by Jessica Coulson Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sarah Robinson has overcome a lot of obstacles in her life. From being born at 7 1/2 weeks premature, to being the leader of the pack, she is awe inspiring to me. Sarah weighed 3.4 pounds and fought asthma and is now an amazing athlete and roll model for other peers. She was chosen as one of the members of the 2020 Semper Fidelis All American Team to represent the state of Mississippi. Seven years ago, her father had a life-altering accident. She has stepped up to the plate and helped him with running the family business. Sarah is an all around good girl and is very well deserving of this award.

What do you think is the biggest influence you had to overcome all your obstacles to become the amazing athlete and role model you are now?
I guess being born a ‘preemie’ was the first big battle for both me and my parents. Coming into this world 7 weeks early at whooping 3 pounds set the stage for me to be a fighter. My father was the first to hold me. That bond has never been broken. I draw strength and encouragement daily from my dad. He instilled in me the drive and determination to work thru the setbacks of asthma, working out and building endurance. He never treated me as a fragile little girl. He taught me to be gritty and that it was ok to be an aggressive competitor. When I watched my dad race dirt bikes, I knew that’s what I wanted to do, and he was more than a willing teacher.

Tell us what sports you play:
Since I was a small child I have participated in organized sports, whether in a league or at school. Soccer, dirt bike racing, gymnastics, dance, track and field and shooting are some of the sports I have enjoyed. My soccer coach, Lyndon Cain has greatly impacted by life and truly inspired me to be ‘more’ than just an athlete. He has taught me responsibility and commitment. He stresses the importance of ‘teamwork’ yet at the same time he ‘pushes’ us each individually, to always give just a little bit more, to set the bar a little higher so ‘WE’ can reach our full potential and stretch our limits, mentally- physically and socially.

What is the 2020 Semper Fidelis All American Team and what are your roles and responsibilities as a member to represent the State of Mississippi?
Through soccer I have learned to not only be a player but also a leader and mentor. There is more to school than just sports. Coach Cain nominated me to represent my school in the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis program last winter. His nomination was based on my participation and leadership in sports, my involvement in our community and maintaining high academic standards. The motto of the Marine Corps is “Always Faithful”. As a student athlete I hope to exemplify dedication to my studies as well as my sports, staying true to myself and my beliefs.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’d be the first to admit I am a tomboy at heart, but I also have a girlie girl side! As a small child I loved gymnastics and dancing. I am a ‘Bravette’, a member of our high school dance team. For the past 4 years I have thoroughly loved the Friday night lights, the football games and then supporting our high school basketball teams. Dancers have a little bit of a competitive nature too. Our squad is small in number but big in heart and it is a sisterhood that I will always cherish.

Sophie Savell – Mississippi
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by
Carliann Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Picture
Photography by Carliann Photography

The Nomination: Sophie Savell is the hardest working teenager I know. She babysits constantly so she can help her family support her, but she also runs three small businesses from her home. During the Fall of 2020, she used her social media influence through her businesses to raise money to fund 131 Operation Christmas Child Boxes. Sophie is the very definition of an Inspiring Teen, and watching her makes me want to be a better woman.

Tell us more about what you have done and how you went about doing it involving your three small businesses.
When I was thirteen, I found the love for jewelry and wanted to share my style with people around me. My mom was a jeweler so she had all the supplies I would need. I started my Instagram business that day, and now I have shipped to over thirty states and made more than one thousand five-hundred pieces of jewelry. Today, I not only have my jewelry business, but I run a clothing account, and co-run a shop with my best friend that is a gift shop with completely customizable items aimed toward gift giving. I have loved every minute of making each item by hand, packaging the order, and getting to take it to the post office.

What volunteer opportunities have you had with the elderly and small children and why are they so important to you?
My heart has always been in wanting to help the elderly and children in need. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, and going to church with them is where I developed my love for helping the elderly. I have worked multiple vacation bible schools and had to help the older ladies with decorating, cooking, cleaning, and taking as many steps for them as I could so that they did not have to. My love for helping the children in need grew when I watched an Operation Christmas Child video one day. Realizing that I had more than I would ever need, I wanted to help the other children immediately. This past year I was able to help one-hundred and thirty one children around the world receive gifts. Both are so important to me because it seems today that there are less people who want to help them, so my goal is to not only help them myself, but to expand the help they get from the people around me.

Picture

What do you want us to know about Integrity and Perseverance?
Growing up I was always told to do what is right, even if no one was watching. I let that stick with me, and I always did what I thought was right. I never gave up and kept working towards my goals. It turns out someone is always watching you whether it's a person, someone watching you through a camera, or just through social media. Babysitting children has taught me to have even better integrity and to be a better role model. Given this opportunity today, I would love to inspire someone to persevere and to have integrity through whatever it is they might be going through.
