Photography by Brandy Gardea Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Larissa has tremendously changed my life and all of those around her. She has a way of making individuals better people by teaching patience, showing them strength, and motivating each of them to improve themselves in the simplest of ways. From the moment Larissa was born she has shown the world how to be kind and how to love, but not allow others to take her kindness as a weakness. When problems have arrived for Larissa no matter how daunting they may have seemed, she showed others just how determined and persistent one needs to be to overcome anything.

What do you love most about being a senior this year?
My senior year of high school has been amazing, I love the feelings and activities that have come along with it. I feel as if I have finally made it to the place where the younger classmen are now looking up to me. I like the fact that the teachers treat us like young adults and prepare us for what is to come. As my final days of attending high school are approaching quickly, the friendships are growing tighter, and the memories are becoming unforgettable.

What will you miss most about high school?
I have been going to school with the same group of kids since kindergarten. This is something not everyone gets to experience but I am extremely grateful for in my small town. There are a lot of positives and negatives to knowing most people on such a personal level. I am going to miss the daily routine and the oh so familiar faces. I am also going to miss all the teachers who have gotten me to the place in life I am in today.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I am going to be attending is West Coast Ultrasound Institute in San Marcos Ca. I will graduate in three years with my bachelor’s degree in Sonography. After I obtain my degree I want to immediately jump into the workforce. I plan to work in a large hospital and hope to help mothers’ dreams come true by finding out all the details of their unborn children, or helping others by finding sources of medical issues. I can see myself being highly successful as well as independent as I continue to grow and learn in the medical field.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind younger teens?
The legacy that I hope to leave behind to younger teens would be importance of always be true to yourself. Never let anyone else define you or change your spark. God made each of us differently for a reason, and trying to not let others words or actions bring you down. Finding yourself worth is hands down the most important thing for a young lady. Building confidence within yourself is not an easy task but if you take it one step at a time the results you see will make the tough days well worth it.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
It would be a rare occurrence if I had nothing to do all day, but if it happened you would find me out hunting, fishing, or soaking up the sun. I live in one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. Deep inside the Eastern Sierra’s is my hometown of Bishop California. It is here that I not only learned to catch trout, but to shoot a gun, and how to enjoy the outdoors. Lately a favorite pastime has been hitting the golf course with friends and attempting to play the game of golf.

What are your responsibilities as captain? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
While playing high school sports I was given the opportunity to be the captain. I loved being in a position where I was a positive role model for the other girls to look up to. While being a part of the team this year I felt very comfortable with my teammates, they became sisters to me. We shared the good and tough times together, and this made me feel like I belonged. I stood out this year because of my attitude. I gave it my all every opportunity I had and really wanted to leave everything I had on that court.

What is your favorite memory with your volleyball team?
Before every volleyball season we always start the season off with a team bonding experience. This is where the entire team sleeps over in the gym together. We get the opportunity to share team goals and set challenges to reach throughout the season. While we spend the whole night together as a team, we build trustful relationships with one another that we later bring onto the court. I will never forget the loud music we blasted all night, the endless amount of junk food we consumed, or the never-ending hilarious stories shared between us.

How did you find and why did you choose Brandy Gardea Photography for your photographer?
The good Lord has truly blessed my family with having Brandy as a close family friend for quite some time. Over the last few years, we have witnessed her become an exceptionally talented photographer. Brandy takes the time to get to know you, pin points your personality, and does an amazing job of expressing you in her photos. Brandy has a tremendously talented eye for the small details, and a true gift for boosting confidence and capturing the perfect moments. I guarantee one photo shoot with Brady and you will have memories that will last a lifetime and a new friend for life.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Taking photos with Brandy is amazing. My family and I have had quite a few photos shoots with her all over our home town. She encourages you to dress anyway you want and have a wonderful time just being yourself. Brandy has allowed me to help find the perfect spots to capture each of my photos. She loves to try out different poses and a variation of faces. The part that I loved most about this experience was having the opportunity to fully express myself. I genuinely had a wonderful time and loved working with such an amazing photographer.

What else would you like to talk about?
I consider myself to be a confident young lady, however this has not always been the case. During my younger teen years, I struggled tremendously not only with self-esteem but also with my appearance. When dealing with teen acne it is not only physically painful, but it is draining to your worth. After excepting and growing, you will eventually learn that beauty comes from the inside and acne can't define you. When encountering someone who may be struggling with self-esteem, I share my story in hopes to encourage them.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
During the last year I have personally lost a very close friend of mine due to a drunk driving accident. This incident hits close to my heart as I have grown up with alcohol affecting family members. After losing a friend I feel it is my job to be an advocate against drinking and driving. I hate the idea of people’s lives being taken away due to a bad decision. This is why I have taken it upon myself to be a part of a program that gives students real life loss, grieving, and ultimate consequences of drunk driving.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Throughout my teen years I have been elected to positions of leadership that not only evaluated my patience but gave me the opportunity to help and encourage others. I earned the title of captain for both the drill team as well as my volleyball team. Both roles gave me the chance to learn to listen to others, as well as gain the ability to strengthen a team. While playing sports that I am enthusiastic about, I gained leadership skills that I will carry with me throughout life.

Chloe Cooley

Picture

Chloe Cooley - Louisiana
Nomination by Candice Cooley
Photography by Stephanie Roy Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Chloe Cooley is an inspiring teen in so many ways. Her work ethic, determination, and loving personality are just a few of the characteristics that make her a candidate for Inspiring Teens. Not only is Chloe involved in many clubs and sports at her high school, but she is also very involved in her community and church parish. She makes an impact on everyone she meets and shines bright in all that she does. Her smile is infectious and contagious. You would not regret considering Chloe Cooley for Inspiring Teens 2023.
Photography by Stephanie Roy Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Hearing loss can be a challenging obstacle to overcome. As someone who has experienced it firsthand, I understand the difficulties it presents. In school, I had to come up with unique ideas to accommodate my hearing loss. It required extra effort, but I refused to let it hold me back. In sports, my hearing loss made things more difficult, but I didn't give up. Instead, I found ways to adapt. It wasn't always easy, but my perseverance paid off. Now, I hope to inspire others facing similar challenges to keep pushing forward. With determination and hard work, anything is possible.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to speak about the profound impact the women in my life have had on me. My mother is my lighthouse and guides me through the chaos of life. My nanny is my biggest supporter and pushed me to strive for greatness and be the best version of myself. My grandmother has been a constant source of hope and love that I can always turn to. Their unwavering support has helped shape me into the woman that I am today, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If given the opportunity, I would highlight the importance of self love. Too often, young women are subjected to the belief that society sets the standards for their beauty and that the only way they are able to achieve love is by meeting those standards. Flaws are what define our individual beauty. Young women should instead be taught to embrace their uniqueness and shine beyond what society says they are allowed to accomplish. Women are so powerful and I believe that if we come together to lift each other up then so much more can be accomplished in the name of woman-kind.

Which of your core values is most important to you and why?

I would say that my core value that is most important to me is being genuine. Not only do you get to be your true self when you’re genuine, but because of this other people feel like they can be their true selves around you. Being genuine is a great way to help other people feel like they can be themselves and encourage positive relationships.

Why is your education important to you?
I look at education as a way to better yourself, your mind, and your opportunities in life, which is why I think it’s so important. Learning gives a person the opportunity to expand their ideas and perspective, which equips them to come in contact with other people. When this contact with others is used for good, it allows people to help each other and provides us with a more connected and engaging life.

What subject is your favorite in your senior year and why?
So far this year, my favorite subject has been AP English. I think some of the reason why I like it is because I didn’t take an english during the school year last year, so I was excited to be able to learn about the subject face-to-face and catch up on what I’ve missed, but I think the other reason why I like it so much is because I see it as an opportunity for growth. Going into this year without taking an English class my previous year was intimidating for me, so it pushed me to work harder than I normally would. This paid off, and because I ended up enjoying the actual subject matter on top of the extra work put in, the work in the class felt rewarding. As well as this, my teacher this year for AP English was great and I really liked the way she taught the class.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned so far this year?
The most interesting thing I’ve learned this year has been something called the Domino Effect. This theory has been a thing for a long time and I’ve always kind of known about it, but I’ve never consciously believed that it happens until recently. Basically the Domino Effect describes how each of your individual actions, no matter how small they may seem at the time, can build into larger events or circumstances that shape your life, kind of like knocking over a domino then more dominos falling because of it. It’s so cool to think that something I do right now can drastically change the course of my life, and learning about the reality of this effect has caused me to be more intentional with my actions and think about how I can tip a domino in the ‘positive’ direction.

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Read Photography for your photographer?
I found Angie Read through Instagram. A couple of the girls I followed had her as their senior photographer last year, so one day I went to her account and looked at all of her photos (and absolutely loved them!). I went straight to her website after that and saw all of the activities and photo sessions she had planned for her senior reps, and immediately knew that it was something I wanted to do.

What was your first photo experience like with her?
My first photo experience with Angie Read was taking birthday and senior rep announcement shots at her house in front of a backdrop she had set up. When I first arrived, she was so welcoming and nice, and she had all the girls play icebreakers to meet each other, which helped ease us into taking photos. Overall, it was great and got me excited for the rest of the year.

What did you love most about being on her senior team?
I love Mrs. Angie’s kindness and the positive attitude she brings to every shoot. She’s such a light to not only her reps but everyone she works with, which makes the shoots enjoyable and less stressful. As well as this, the community that has been built through shared photo shoots, group hangouts, and senior rep volunteer projects has been so fun to be a part of. All of the girls are so nice and it’s been wonderful experiencing part of my senior year with them.

Tell us about your school and what you'll miss most about it.
I go to Klein Collins High School (Go Tigers) where I’ve been at for four years now. My school is a part of the Klein district and has been a great place to spend my time and grow throughout my last four years as not only a student but a person. I’ll probably miss the sense of community and the memories that have been made there the most. The communities that I’ve been able to be a part of because of Klein Collins have shaped me into the person I am today and have allowed me to grow with people I care for and look up to. Being in such close proximity to these communities has made bonds that will hopefully last for years to come. As well as this, I’ve made so many fond memories with my friends and classmates that I will cherish forever.

Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I’ve found that I typically fit in with people who have the same values that I do, or that carry the same interests as me. I would say I stand out in the leadership positions I hold in a few of my extracurricular activities, which is mostly because of their leadership demands.

Photography by Angie Read Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some things about me that aren’t included in my nomination are my academic achievements, like graduating as an honors student and my perseverance through hard classes, my involvement in extracurricular activities such as my school’s yearbook as a staffer and editor, student council as a member and officer, and National Honors Society, and my involvement in my church as a camp counselor. As well as this, I’m a member of an organization that allows high school girls to volunteer with their moms outside of school called Legacy League, which I’ve been a part of all throughout high school!

What is your favorite memory from being on the yearbook team?
I would say my favorite memories from my years on Yearbook would be our distribution days. Every year we create a theme for the day when we hand out the completed yearbooks, which has been the best possible way to celebrate finishing the book as well as get it to the people who have bought it. The costumes and decorations make an otherwise small event for someone who’s picking up their yearbook more special, and give someone who’s celebrating the completion of the yearbook a chance to recognize their hard work.

What is your favorite accomplishment as a student council member and officer?
I’d say my favorite accomplishment as a Student Council officer would be making the football and winter dress up days. My position in Student Council this year is to spread school spirit by making dress up days, and successfully completing the dress up days that occurred about every week then every day for about a month felt like a huge accomplishment.

What was your favorite service project on the student council?
My favorite service project for Student Council was making veterans thank you cards. Getting to recognize people that, unless you were related, would be hard to seek out or find a way to thank personally, was nice to do.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

Tell us about your time as a camp counselor.
I was a camp counselor last summer at both my church and a summer camp organization! Being a counselor was an amazing experience, and I learned a lot about helping others and being a positive influence to others from the people I was surrounded by. Not only does counseling at a summer camp positively impact the campers, but you also grow as a person!

What has been your favorite part of being a member of Legacy League?
My favorite part about Legacy League has been serving alongside like-minded and kind people who want to make an impact on others. As well as this, getting to volunteer with my mom has given us the chance to grow our relationship.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would talk about how people's worldviews are strongly influenced by the type of books that they read as a child. I think it's so interesting that a perspective can be so shaped and expanded by literature, and that everyone who has gotten the opportunity to read as a child is affected by the books that they read.

I started playing basketball at the age of 5 and just finished my senior year, which was my final year, and went out with a bang!

One thing I would say I love the most is dunking the ball because you just get up there and put it in the hoop. With my team, we were very hard working and competitive.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from basketball?

What is your strongest leadership skill?
My strongest leadership skill is holding people accountable and getting the best out of them every day.

What will you miss most about high school?
I will miss my friends, especially the ones I have become really close with the past couple years and the underclassmen.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You could find me either at the gym, baseball field, basketball court or hanging with my friends and/or family.

How did you find and why did you choose Erinn Letts Photos for your photographer?
Erinn is a mom of a friend of mine who I have played basketball with for years and she’s like a bonus mom to me. She’s always taking pictures of us at basketball and pumping us up, all while having fun. I knew she would do a great job capturing the true me.

It was fun with being able to be myself and not worry about any specific poses she wanted. She was able to get great shots all while I was able to be comfortable and be myself.

I love just hanging out with them. We color, do chalk, listen to music and watch sports games. I love being able to be their role model and being able to spend as much time with them as I do, I have learned a lot about life and how to treat others from them.

What do you wish more people knew about special needs people and/or interacting with them?
I wish people knew they can do the same things we can do, it’s just more challenging and takes more time. Also, that people would respect them as being people instead of making fun of them or ignoring them because they have disabilities. I have been lucky enough to be around the same group of friends playing sports that understand the challenges they go through every day and they make sure my aunt and uncles feel special every time they see them.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very passionate about sports, school, and life experiences. I am hardworking and always push through life's obstacles, never giving up. I try to set an example for others to follow. I also enjoy working with younger peers to help them with educational or sports challenges they face. I have a huge heart and find value in every person.

What else would you like to talk about?
Many people have assisted me in developing my skills over the years. Allowing me to go to good schools, participate in a variety of sports and other activities, while making lifelong friends. My aunt and uncles with special needs have helped me to see life differently and to become more determined and being more passionate in everything I do. Life is not always easy. I am convinced that hard work will help me to achieve my goals and tackle the challenges I face.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would speak about sports. From almost when I first started to walk, I have been involved in sports and I have met many people along the way, who have assisted me to get where I am now. They have all helped me to develop a complete knowledge for the sports I love. Whether it is a relative, teacher, coach, fellow player, they have all helped me in becoming the person that I am.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To never give up and never be satisfied with the outcomes other people expect from you. Also, trust the process.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I played soccer since I was able to walk, all through grade school and freshman year of high school. The past 3 years I have been lucky enough to give back and coach soccer at the grade school/middle school I went to.

- Go to all MLB, NBA, NBA and NFL stadiums for a game
- Travel the world.

My favorite thing about being a senior is being someone people can look up too. I hope I can show my younger friends how to lead and take responsibility.

What will you miss most about high school?
I’m definitely going to miss my friends and my sport. With school it’s almost impossible not to see your friends which is something I always look forward to so not seeing them everyday is going to be hard. Another thing is Colorguard, I have been doing this activity for a very long time and I don’t know what I’m going to do with my free time now.

What else would you like to talk about?

Allie Plaugher

Allie Plaugher – Ohio
Nomination by Alison Parker
Photography by Lauren Day Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Allie Plaugher is an inspirational figure because she is full of enduring passion. Ever since she was little girl, she has always adored music and participating in band. Her favorite instrument is the piano, and she often expresses her musical skills at her beloved church. After she graduates high school, she plans to major in music education to become a band director, with a minor in photography. It is my hope that her ambition will rub off on her future students like it constantly does to me!

Picture
Photography by Lauren Day Photography

Tell us more about your band career.
My school doesn't offer band until 6th grade, so I started then, but my musical career started a long time before then! I was born into a very musical family! I started playing piano when I was 8, so I have been playing for about 10 years, and I started playing my clarinet in band when I was 11, so I have been playing clarinet for 7 years! I fell in love with music so much that I am going to college with a major in Music Education so I can be a band director!

What is your favorite genre of music to play?
My favorite genre of music to play will forever be jazz/classical depending on what instrument I am playing. If I am playing my clarinet, jazz all the way!! If I am playing piano, classical is my favorite.

What is your go-to song when someone asks you to play?
When someone requests me to play something on piano, my go-to is the prologue from Beauty and the Beast! I was very proud of learning this piece, I taught it to myself during quarantine. If someone asks me to play my clarinet, I usually improvise something, so it is never the same thing.

If you could play in any band anywhere, which one would it be and why?
I ADORE movie music!! I have an entire playlist on spotify dedicated to my favorite soundtracks that is well over 30 hours long. So, if I could play in any band anywhere, I would probably say a band or orchestra somewhere that records soundtracks for movies! I would want to be part of such an important project!!!

What have you learned about yourself playing music?
When I think about the lessons that I have learned while playing music, the one that sticks out to me the most is that I have learned resilience! The thing about music is you are going to fail. It takes time to get something perfect so working hard and learning to try again when you fail is essential when learning something new!

What has been a favorite accomplishment in music?
My favorite accomplishment in music is probably playing at Disney World in marching band! That was something that we had to audition for and got to march in the parade in front of the castle in the Magic Kingdom!

Tell us about your church and what you love most about it?
Oh my goodness!! I love my church so so much. I go to Covenant of Peace in my hometown. Everyone there is so welcoming, loving and kind. My church is very involved with world missions, which I love very much! They are so loving towards others and want to give to others instead of giving to themselves. I have seen God do some incredible things there and move in ways I have never seen before!! They truly live their lives to glorify God and work his purpose, not their own!! It truly is such a spirit filled church, and we love it there!

Picture
Photography by Lauren Day Photography

What is your favorite thing to do at church?

My favorite thing to do there is probably to worship with my family and friends! Unity is very important in churches, and this church is very unified! We all worship together, and it is amazing to be able to worship with your friends and family. I truly have made some of the most impactful and amazing friends that will last a lifetime!

Why is God such a huge part of your life?
God is such a huge part of my life for a lot of reasons, but the biggest reason is because of everything he has done. I have seen God work in a lot of ways, from performing miracles to giving people happiness and joy they haven't felt in a long time. He provided a way for people to have a eternal life in heaven with him, and to me that is so amazing. How can someone just pass that up?

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’m a STICKLER on positivity!! I always want to make sure that people can feel open to talking to me and always want to make sure that I am there for people when they need me! And, ALWAYS sharing God’s love!

How did you find and why did you choose Lauren Day Photography for your photographer?
One of my friends had her do her senior pictures and I felt like they really captured her personality through the photos!! Her style of photography was exactly what I was looking for, and she was such an amazing and sweet person!! She is such a ray of sunshine! I am so glad that I picked her.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was amazing!! She had me laughing a lot during the shoot, and she was such a sweet person. I ADORED the spots that we picked for the shoots! They were so pretty!

What do you like taking pictures of most?
I personally enjoy taking pictures of people! I love capturing life and emotion through a lens. It is truly amazing! A picture really is worth a thousand words!

Tell us the story behind a favorite image you've taken. We'd love to see it!
My favorite photo that I have taken is probably a picture of one of my close friends Chloe! She is such an amazing person. The dress that you will see in the photo was actually a dress of mine that I gave to her for the shoot! We have been friends since we were little when her mom babysat my sister and I, and we have been friends ever since!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Bullying!!! I know it’s a topic that is already well discussed, but I feel like there are some things that are left unsaid, especially coming from someone who has been through it. I would definitely like to share the effects of it that not many people see!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
It's not huge, but honestly stepping out of my comfort zone in sports! I played volleyball, and that was huge for me. I used to be a very shy kid who didn't like being in front of people at all, so playing in front of others was a big deal for me. I went from not being able to get the ball over the net to becoming a server. I went from being an incredibly shy kid to becoming team captain!!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would probably say to work hard and stay positive. I have been through some pretty rough things in my life that I wouldn't want anyone to go through, but overall, they made me stronger and a better person. I would just say to keep your head up and let God take control!!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I will be out of college, so that is exciting! Hopefully I will have been on a missions trip or two, and have my degree and be teaching! I am very excited!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Graphic Design/ Working with youth and children!! I love doing graphic design, it is really fun to create new designs and share them. I also enjoy working with children and youth! They are amazing!!

3 Things on your bucket list
- I would love to travel!!
- Go on a missions trip
- Go see a live orchestra!

Who do you find inspiring?
I have a hard time picking just one person, so I have narrowed it down to three. My mom, one of my friends mom (I call her Mama Amy) and My pastors wife, Angel! They are all so incredibly strong women and they are such Godly, humble, and inspiring women! I hope that I can be as inspiring as they are to me someday!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
- I hope that people see my faith as something that is inspiring. I hope that people see the love of Jesus through me. and see how much strength he gives me!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would just say THANK YOU for the opportunity to be in this magazine! I hope that I have made a difference in others’ lives!

What would you like to talk about first?
I would like to touch on the topic of my school involvement. I have participated in three sports and four different clubs. Within those clubs I am president for one, Vice-President for two, and on the leadership team for the other. I encourage everyone to find their liking at school and involve themselves. I have learned numerous life lessons, that will stay with me throughout my life. I hope everyone has the opportunity to find their passion at school and chase it. Because without involving myself with sports and clubs, I wouldn’t be the same person I am today.

Let's start with your sports. What sports do you play and which is your favorite?
I played basketball for 2 years, football for 3, and track for 4. My favorite is track because in track I’m most comfortable, confident, and competitive. Track has always been my passion sport and I am blessed for the opportunity to continue my career in college.

What is a favorite memory from a sport you've played?
My favorite memory was my first track meet during my sophomore year. I was recovering from a major knee injury, but got the opportunity to throw my shot put in competition. At that meet I placed first, against a competitor that stood about a foot taller than me and twice the size as me. After that meet I had the realization that I was competitive in the sport I loved most, this then started my dream and passion to continue my athletic career in college. Thanks to that meet, I am now going to college for track and field.

What is a favorite accomplishment from a sport you've played?
My favorite accomplishment was in 8th grade in Track and Field, where I threw my shot put far enough for state qualifying. It was my favorite because of how small I was compared to all my competitors, and how much they counted me out really pushed me. I was proud of myself for achieving my goal I set, while going against other’s assumptions.

Moving on to clubs, tell us about the clubs you're in.

I am in Student Council, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), NHS (National Honors Society), CAMA. In each club I hold leadership positions and I hold many responsibilities. Each club focuses on leadership and community Service.

Which club are you president in and what are your roles and responsibilities in that position?
I am the president of my school’s Student Council. I have been the president for 3 years straight. Within this club I hold the responsibilities to run the meeting, perform 12 hours of community service, and teach members successful leadership qualities.

What clubs are  you vice president in? What have been your biggest impact in both?
I am the vice president of my school’s NHS and CAMA. For NHS, I would say that my biggest impact is the leadership qualities I have shown throughout my school. For CAMA, my biggest impact is the reach to get younger students to join this club and embrace the stop of drug and alcohol use.

What is the 4th club and what is something you are proud to have been a part of in that club?
My 4th club is FCA, in which I’m on the leadership team for. FCA is a club that shares the word of god through athletes at our school. I’m proudly a part of this club and our events throughout the year. I’m most proud of morning huddles we before school starts. At this we have a pastor speak a lesson to students willing to involve themselves. I have learned many valuable lessons here and think it’s a great way to spread the word of God.

What have you learned about yourself through all these leadership opportunities?
Thankfully for these clubs, I have learned that I thrive in leading others towards success. Which has given me my path for my future. After discovering how much I care to create a successful path for others, I decided that I want to become a teacher after college. I found this out thanks to my leadership opportunities within my high school

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is my ability to make sure people I am leading are following and not falling behind. My first year as president for Student Council I was told that what makes a strong leader is that leadership quality, which is why I have made sure to make it a point for me to succeed at it. It is important to not leave your members or followers in the dust, while you do it all the work.

What will you miss most about high school?

I will miss most the friendships I have created. I have gone to my school my entire life, and so have my friends. We have a created such an amazing bond and steering away from that chapter will be difficult to do. I will also miss my entire class in general. My graduating class has 32 kids and majority of us have been together since Kindergarten. Not seeing them daily will be strange, at the least.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would most likely find me in bed taking a nap! I never…never have time to just relax and enjoy, so I would take the opportunity to do so. Also, I would watch TikTok…because what teenager isn’t obsessed with that app!

What are you most looking forward to this summer/after high school?
This summer I have the opportunity to tutor students at my former high school. I’m excited for this chance because I get to learn how to teach children. I’m also excited to train and prepare myself for the chance to start my collegiate track and field career

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Lieb for your photographer?
Angie is my aunt, and I was looking for someone to take Instagram picture of me…so I dragged her to take some pictures of me.

How did you find and why did you choose Christina Smith for your photographer?
I chose Christina because she is a local photographer with great pictures! She also took pictures of my sister-in-law so I knew her and have seen her work before. I had a blast Christina taking my pictures and she was my biggest hype women throughout the whole thing!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Continue working hard, through the struggles. It is easier to quit than to fight, but quitting won’t lead you towards success.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself living in my hometown and teaching back at my former high school.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Spending time with my family, especially after Sunday Church services and going to visit with my whole family on my great grandma’s sunporch.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Inspiring things about me include my goal setting and my work ethic. I have always set goals for myself, in order to achieve my wants and dreams. Not only do I set these goals for myself, but I work hard to achieve them. I don’t let obstacles hold me back from pushing myself towards success. I think everyone needs goals for themselves, so we all have something to work towards and dream about.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present the importance of community service. Throughout my four years of high school, I have served over 50 hours of community service. I have done everything from shoveling snow to organizing a charity ‘Basket Binga’. No matter what service I did, it has always left an impact on others. I hope to encourage others to involve themselves with serving others. Doing any kind of task for one’s community can make a positive impact. Isn’t this a goal majority of us have…to make positive impact on the people around us. Community service is the way to achieve that goal.

Caden Gibbs

Caden Gibbs – North Carolina
Nomination & Photography by Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Caden Gibbs is such a wonderful representative of this community. In addition to being a 2-sport athlete (Volleyball and Softball), she is a volunteer athletic trainer for all sports at her high school. Caden is also a nanny for a young boy with extreme disabilities, and cares for him on a regular basis with love and care that comes from her heart. She is constantly noticed by her school's administration as a leader in the school. It has been such an honor to get to know her and to create such memorable photographs to capture a piece of her in her senior year!

Picture
Photography by Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader

Tell us about your softball career. When did you get started, where are you at with it now, what position do you play - etc.
I was a late bloomer and didn’t start playing softball until I was in middle school, my entire childhood I danced and had no interest in anything else until one day I got the bright idea to try it and fell in love. I am a utility player, so I go anywhere and everywhere, I’ve played up to 5 positions in a single game. As of right now I have a few standing scholarships to play in college, but I’m still trying to figure out if that’s the right path.

What is a favorite accomplishment from softball?
My favorite accomplishment in softball would have to be playing varsity all 4 years of high school. We have a very good program, and you have to earn everything you get.

Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I’m just another teenage girl that plays volleyball, but where I stand out is I am only 5’6 and I play front row as an outside hitter.

What is a favorite memory with your volleyball team?
My favorite memory would be my senior night because the whole atmosphere of the gym was just eccentric.

What are your duties as a volunteer athletic trainer?
My duties include, covering and cleaning wounds, wrapping joints, making sure teams get proper hydration, preparing ice bags, preparing ice baths, helping with treatments, monitoring weather conditions, and helping make sure athletes take care of themselves. What I love most about it is the hands-on experience it provides and the personal relationships you create.

Picture
Photography by Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader
How did you find and why did you choose Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader for your photographer?
I found Pat Shrader when he came to the school to take pictures for our senior sports banners. I showed him what I wanted for my senior pictures and asked him if he could do them, he told me he could and would love to see what we could create.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I had an amazing experience! He was so enthusiastic and encouraging the whole session. I loved how creative the whole experience was and how he used simple objects to make a masterpiece.

Why did you choose to be a nanny for a young boy with extreme disabilities and what do you love doing most with him?
His family needed someone who could give him one on one attention. I had previous experience in nanny positions and was BLS (basic life support) and first aid certified which gave them comfort. I ultimately chose to be his nanny because I knew he needed me, I could provide the care for him no one else could. Over time our relationship just grew and it wasn’t a job anymore I genuinely loved being with him.

What do you wish others knew about working with a child with disabilities?
I wish others knew that it’s not an easy job. You constantly stress about what could go wrong, that you’re not doing what they need or that they aren’t comfortable. The little boy I nanny for can’t communicate so some days were really hard because he couldn’t tell me what he needed, so I wish others knew how it teaches you not to give up. You keep trying to you figure out what they need and get it right.

What else would you like to talk about?
My joy and enthusiasm for helping people and how that has created a sturdy foundation for a career or what I’d like to do in the future.

What career would you like to have?
I would like to be a nurse in a level 1 trauma center and eventually earn my CRNA-DNP to practice anesthesia.

What is your best leadership quality?
I would say my best leadership quality is my resilience, I try to quickly overcome things and focus on the next obstacle ahead of me.

What will you miss most about high school?
The thing I will miss most about high school will probably be the general atmosphere and the experiences. It was nothing like the movie High School Musical but I could certainly make a movie out of my time in high school!

Picture
Photography by Blue Ridge Expressions by Pat Shrader

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?
I’m most looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life. I’m ready to experience new things, go new places and create new relationships.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some interesting things my nomination does not cover include, I am a CNA at a private medical center, I am a camp counselor for the STAR (Sheriffs Teaching Abuse Resistance) program in my county, I am a member of NHS (National Honor Society) at my high school, I am a member of NCHSS (North Carolina High School Scholars) and I just recently won first place in a regional HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) competition.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I could present a topic it would probably be the importance of checking in caregivers. Caregivers are always taking care of somebody, but no one really steps back and checks on them. I feel so passionate about this because I’m a caregiver and I know what it’s like from this perspective, I’ve taken care of children with physical needs to medically complex patients recovering from surgery. We deal with people at their worst and it is honestly very weighing at times, it’s a job full of emotion that can’t always be expressed. Caregivers go through a lot and are real life superheroes who needs more credit for what they do and to be checked on more than they do.

What else would you like to talk about?
As a young child, I wore an eye patch to strengthen my eye from a congenital cataract. Through the years, I had to overcome looking different, bullying, and vision problems in general. I’ve come a long way from where I was and am grateful for the change of perspective.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I have a personal connection to those who have been bullied for looking different. Since I grew up with an eye patch, no one else looked like me. I am able to empathize with those who have gone through or are going through the same experiences as me.

Myah Wilke

4/10/2023

Picture

Myah Wilke – Oklahoma
Nomination & Photography by Sonja Marie Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Myah Wilke is smart, joyful, talented and inspiring. Not only is she the kindest teenager I have ever met she is focused on serving and loving the people around her. Myah currently holds the title of The National American Miss Oklahoma Jr. Teen. She has dedicated herself to inspire and uplift the youth and community around her while also maintaining high academics. She is involved in theatre, sports, and most importantly church. She loves her family and those around her in such a way you can't help but want to be around her.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a passion for service.  Over the last few years, I have volunteered for a global organization based in OKC called the Maisha Project.  The mission of this organization is to break generational barriers of poverty, beginning with our children.  I served as a Student Ambassador with Maisha and developed a true heart for its purpose.  I hope to someday visit Kenya with this group.  I first heard the story of Maisha while attending a benefit, where I heard its founder speak about her journey.  Her story gripped my heart and changed my mind about service and volunteerism forever.

What would you most like to talk about in your interview?
I would most like to talk about that to this point in my life, I have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, events, clubs and organizations.  Also, many amazing and talented people have poured into my life to help make me who I am today.  I believe that it is very important for young people to be humble, kind and grateful for our circumstances.  I truly just want to express my gratitude for that and for people like the photographer, Sonja Marie, who nominated me for this award.  Without others, success feels empty.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about being unapologetically yourself always.  I cannot say that I have always been able to do that either.  Therefore, I would love to have this opportunity as the Inspiring Teen to speak and engage with others on this critical issue.  I am also in the process of preparing a blog on this topic.  Teens face so many pressures today to fit into a certain box, no matter what that box may be.  When each of us can learn to embrace who we were created to be, true joy will emerge.

I could talk about my motocross career and my music hobby because it has been such a big part of my life since I was young. I’ve learned many life lessons doing these things and it has made me a better man.

Chase has had several set backs along his high school journey. Loosing a father his Sophomore year, and being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes his Junior year. Chase inspires so many with his drive and determination.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I live by the quote improvise, adapt, and overcome. I have had to do these things many times in my life. I first experienced this in 2017 when my dad had passed away. I first had to improvise to this tragic accident then I adapted and finally overcame this. Recently I got the news I am a type 1 diabetic and have had to do the same thing. It is something great to live by and I will encourage others to do so.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am a 3 sport athlete at Tecumseh High School and have been varsity on all sports for 4 years. I thrive to be a leader in and out of athletics. I lead by example and fix whatever people need help with.

It would be about leadership and how it plays such an important role on people’s lives.

Bella Matos

Picture

Bella Matos – California
Nomination by Rosemary Matos
Photography by Alicia Crosson Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Bella Matos is one of the most dedicated and hard-working teens I know. She puts 110% into everything that she does. She excels in leadership positions and has held various offices past and present. Currently she is the freshman class president, and is in FFA leadership all while holding an A+ average GPA. She’s extremely dedicated to FFA participating in speaking competitions as well as raising her pig for fair. She is also a six year cheerleader and participates in a cultural dance group!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Being so involved in many different aspects of life over the years has taught me many lessons and made me grow into someone who anyone can count on no matter what. This is a big part of being a leader because a leader should be someone you can count on, and in any aspect of life, whether it be FFA, cheerleading, school, I’m always willing to lend a helping hand or share advice!

What else would you like to talk about?
In the past few years I’ve really taken up an interest in health and fitness. Sometimes social media can really demonize what “health and fitness” means and looks like, so over the years I’ve tried to learn how to live a happy and healthy life through balance. Balance is so important in life, not only in the food you eat or the way you move, but in everything. Take being a student for example: it’s super important to take your education seriously, but it’s just as important to have fun and live life to the fullest!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I’d present what it means to embrace and share your culture. Not everyone embraces their culture, and some people don’t even know or appreciate where they come from! Growing up in a Portuguese family, constantly surrounded by Portuguese friends and family, I’ve learned that no one will even know the beauty of my culture unless I share it. Whenever I get the chance, I like to tell people about the special things that make my beautiful Portuguese culture so special because I know what it means to value where I come from.

Tell us more about your acting career.
I started at age 8, when I began Summer classes at The PA Playhouse for musical theater. There, we were split by age group, and each group put on their own performance at the end of the season to showcase our talents. Then, I was involved with my High School’s community theater group C.A.S.T, which I did up until high school. In eighth grade, I was fortunate enough to join my high school’s Drama Club, and began going up for acting classes there. We mostly did cold readings, improv, and character studies, which were all very beneficial to me at such a young age. From there on, with classes on my belt, I started vacating to different community theaters, such as Munopco, and back to the PA Playhouse where I did one show and a few cabarets. After that, I knew I wasn’t done just yet. So, I continued my journey by taking various masterclasses over Zoom, and thankfully after the pandemic, I was able to go to in-person classes as well. For my junior year of high school, I was nominated for my first ever Freddy Award for “Best Leading Actress in a Musical” (Roxie Hart; Chicago). I got to experience being on stage at The Freddy’s, which is something I have yearned for since I was a little girl. This year, as a senior, I performed my final role as Leading Player in our high school production of ‘Pippin’. Soon after graduation, I plan on taking my acting career to new heights.

What do you love most about acting?
What I love most about acting is that you can bring so much life to a character. You can go so deep into how that character you’re assigned to relate to you, take pieces of memory from your past and make connections to those feelings and emotions to build on to your character’s persona. There’s a sort of mysteriousness to how actors work their magic on screen and the stage, and I love hearing how they make it happen.

What was your character like as Roxie Hart and how could you relate to her?
I had a really deep connection to Roxie, a huge part of the reason being she was my first leading role with the Drama Club. There’s just something about her star-studded upbringing that made me think of me in a lot of ways, more or less. Other than her starting out as a murderer who shot her husband, then pretending to be pregnant for sympathy (haha!), I would say that what connected me most with her was her longing to be seen by the public, to be a star. She’d try anything to get noticed by reporters and have her cover in the papers.

What has the biggest challenge as an actress been?
My biggest challenge as an actress was when I was 16-17, it was more difficult to find castings because I was at that in-between age. Now, it’s a lot easier that I'm 18.

If you could play any role as an actress - what would it be and why?
Most definitely Lydia from Beetlejuice on Broadway! She has that teen angst that I'm sure most of us growing up could relate to, and is just such a powerful character to portray. Seeing so many different versions of her on stage, I feel like I could totally give my own spin on that role.

What is a favorite accomplishment from acting and why does it mean so much to you?
One of my favorite accomplishments from acting is gaining enough confidence at a young age to move forward with it as, not just a hobby, but as a career. This is something I plan on doing for the long run.

Picture
Photography by Jeff Levy of Stylography Studios

What genre do you most enjoy singing? Do you have a favorite go to song and what is it if you do?
That’s funny you ask, cause I enjoy singing a variety of genres! Two genres that I can't get enough of are classic rock or 2000’s pop. My all time favorite go-to song at karaoke is Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac.

What has your cheer career been like?
I began my freshman year as a junior varsity cheerleader, pre- pandemic. I then took a break from cheerleading sophomore and junior year, mainly because I wanted to ensure the health and safety of my grandmother living with me when COVID was more prevalent, and I was also focusing more on my acting career being online. Then, I came back to be in-school my senior year.
Tell us about your cheer team and a favorite memory with them.
One of my favorite memories with my cheer team was during senior night when I walked across the football field with my family, arm in arm, and the girls made a pathway for me and the other senior football players (I was the only senior cheerleader on the team). Seeing and hearing them cheer on either side of me as I go down the field with my family felt so rewarding that I've made it this far as, not just a senior, but as a person.

How did you find and why did you choose Jeff Levy of Stylography Studios for your photographer?
They actually found me! I was contacted by Jeff over Instagram one day, and he was simply congratulating me on singing the national anthem for one of the first times ever at my school. He then went on to say that he noticed that I had an interest in modeling, and wanted to know if I'd like to do my senior photos over at his studio. Not only that, but he offered me 2 hours of a fashion-styled shoot that incorporates themes of my acting/singing. So of course I took up that deal haha!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
It felt like a legit fashion shoot, like I had two women at a time doing my hair and makeup, a clothing rack in the order of outfits I picked online to wear for each background. And it was SO much fun! I think what I loved most about it were the shoes. Some of those shoes, let me tell you, it was like something you’d see on the runway. They ranged from pumps, to chunky heels, to long stiletto boots with a 4 inch heel. And I had to walk up two flights of stairs with them, which was definitely a challenge, but a fun challenge!

What do you love most about being in the Drama Club?
What I love most about the drama club is the sense of togetherness and the relationships you develop there. As president of the group, I gave my all to these students, and helped recruit newcomers into the club. I wanted everyone to feel safe and welcomed, that they are supported for just being themselves. Further on into lessons (before rehearsals), alongside Brenda and Kerry Mcguire, I helped conduct activities that would engage our group into expressing themselves; setting up different scenarios, vocal and character warm ups, etc. That was also before John Leiderman and Marissa Brewer took their rightful places as our new directors/choreographer. This club, from the moment I joined in 8th grade, changed my life for good. Because of them, I started community theater outside of Catty, gained so much confidence in me as an actress and singer, began taking voice lessons more often, and attended masterclasses with the best of the best in the acting/music industry.

What is Interact Club and what are your roles and responsibilities in it?
As secretary of the Interact Club, I helped organize new ideas for fundraisers and contributed any way I could to give back to the community/school, which I did on my own. To give you an idea of what events I was involved in…I was involved with the Haunted Pool House at the Catty Park; costumed character, Fest O’ Fall in North Catty; helped set up equipment + painted kids’ faces, Christmas Tree Lighting at Catty Park, Honoring Veterans Dinner at Mission BBQ + making up baskets to hand out, and Christmas Day Dinner Boxes given out to homebound elderly from Pies On Pizza + pizza delivery to local police stations. Those were all through the club.

What have you learned most about yourself in these leadership roles?
I’ve learned that giving back to the community, your group or whoever, even just a little, does not require tons of experience. All you need is a big heart and the willingness to do something good for yourself that you know will reward you in the end. I believe that giving back to other people can give you that feeling of serotonin, more confidence, and ultimately a high self-esteem.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I've ever accomplished was virtual learning during the pandemic and maintaining honor roll while doing it. I didn’t get to see many of my friends during that time, it felt very isolated. I just was in the mindset that I have to do the best that I could with the situation I was in.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Get rid of the idea that whenever someone asks you what you want to be when you grow up, you don’t have to feel pressured to know. Don't live out someone else's dream, find your own.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I see myself continuing acting/modeling but abroad. My plans are to hopefully one day appear on the big screen.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Exercising and cooking my own meals (while dancing to music of course).

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I make a mean brekkie sandwich.

3 Things on your bucket list…
Perform on Broadway (leading role or swing), travel the world, and land myself on the cover of Vogue.

Who do you find inspiring?
My family, boyfriend, mentors and peers, because they are the people that keep me going and give me overwhelming love and support along the way.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel that because I try to be a leader to others and help them accomplish their own goals, they look to me in that way.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Yes actually! I don’t think I ever mentioned singing the National Anthem at The Giant Center in Hershey. It was for the PIAA Basketball Championships, and was broadcasted nationwide. I’m also singing it at our local State Police Barracks in a ceremony honoring 102 troopers killed in the line of duty. I also auditioned to sing for the Philadelphia Phillies, and am awaiting the outcome. So very exciting things are happening!

What do you wish others knew about being bullied?
That it hurts. I am terrified to trust others and make friends. When I was moving from homeschooling to a traditional school, I thought it would be the best thing but in turn my heart hurts. Bullying leads to kids hurting themselves, committing suicide and hurting family.

What do you enjoy helping others around you most with?
I enjoy helping my friends that have mental illness by trying to push them to move past their urges.

Why is it important to you to be an honor roll student?
Being an honor roll student will help me with scholarships and getting into a good school. With my mom being disabled funds are tights so I know that if I make good grades, I can get help from schools.

What is your favorite subject in school right now, and what is the most interesting thing you've learned so far this year?
It was math for so long but lately it has been science. My Chemistry teachers makes it fun and exciting to learn. I loved Biology and dissecting animals and this year learning the different molecular compounds.

What do you love most about being a freshman?
I have had to move schools due to bullying so at my first school I loved playing on a freshman team. At my new school it's meeting new friends and making a difference in my own town.

What advice do you have to the 8th graders next year going into their first year of high school?
As an incoming 9th grader you have to be respectful to your teachers, Put school first. Ask for help. Be kind to others.

Tell us about your volleyball career. When did you get started and where are you at with it now?

Making All-Conference as a freshman as well as receiving my varsity jacket.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
My mom says I was the missing piece of the family and as the caboose of the family I feel like I am truly a part of it. I stand out because I make lots of jokes and keep everyone going.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Sundays are for church and after we go for lunch and chat about service and our calendar for the week. It's a great way to connect after a busy week and start the week off.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I did not have volleyball, I would be in the backyard with my neighbors.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am also a volunteer for my local food pantry and assist a nonprofit that advocates for foster and adopted children.

What have you learned about yourself as a volunteer at the local food pantry?
What have you learned about others?
Working at a pantry you realize you have it so much better, and you have to really appreciate what you have. Show gratitude to your parents and what they give you. Seeing kids come to the pantry and get excited about Oreo's or something we take for granted really affects me. I wish there was so much more that I could do. I have learned though that the families that come are appreciative and humble about it all.

What do you do with the nonprofit that advocates for foster and adopted children?
I have helped with respite events doing crafts and watching the babies. I also helped at the annual gala. Decorating and prepping for the night. There was a photoshoot once and we just played with the kids in the park, and we built everlasting relationships.

My faith is important to me. I always try to follow all decisions according to how God would want me to behave. I am not always perfect, but I do my best. I enjoy going to youth groups and summer camps. This is something that is so important.

What is a favorite memory from youth groups or summer camps?
Last summer I went to a retreat in Florida. There were 5,000 kids there. The feeling in my heart I wish I could put into words how to explain this memory. 5,000 kids praising God. 5,000 kids praying. 5,000 kids that you knew are in this safe space to honor God.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would like to present why bullying is wrong and how it can affect your mental health. I was bullied for almost 6 months at my new school and it affected me so much that I have to get mental help. It has been 3 months since I walked into a school.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing is what I am going through right now. I am slowly processing it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Oneida Lepe

Oneida Lepe – Colorado
Nomination by Myrna Baeza
Photography by Kathlene Woltemath Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Oneida is inspiring because of her determination and consideration for others. She lives a hectic life but always manages to do everything with a smile and good attitude. I've constantly been told she's a hard worker and goes above and beyond to help support everyone around her. Because of her amazing work ethic and her constant support of everyone around her, I know I'm not the only one she inspires.

Picture

We see in your profile picture that you are playing the violin. What inspired you to pick that instrument?

I've been playing the violin since I was in elementary school, and it was somewhat of a "my friend did it so I wanted to try" but as soon as I started I loved it.

What is your favorite genre of music to play and why?
I like baroque music but romantic music is always so pretty. Baroque music is usually fast and repetitive but always makes me want to move around and bop with the music so it's always fun to play. Romantic music can be more emotional so it's also fun to get into.

Do you have a go to song when people request you to play, and if so, what is it?
I don't have that many people ask me to play something but I'd most likely play Enie Kliene because it's something that many people recognize and I have it memorized.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about my youth trip I went on this past summer to Washington D.C.. This trip was intended for us to learn about our power supply as well as the politician system. I learned about what goes on behind-the-scenes when power is distributed through rural cities and learned how I can better be involved within my community and in making decisions about who's in charge of our states.

Back to your nomination, tell us about your hectic life.
Between work, school, and extracurricular activities I'm a busy bee. I like to keep my life pretty busy because then I feel productive in a lot of aspects. I'm apart of student council, Mu Alpha Theta (Math honors society), NHS, and Tri-em (National Music Honors society) within school, and I'm also a part of a couple out of school chamber groups.

What or who inspires your work ethic and why?
My dad 100% inspires my work ethic because of how much he's accomplished and done. I think it’s so cool thinking about where he started from and where he is now.

Picture
Photography by Kathlene Woltemath Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Kathlene Woltemath for your photographer?
She did my family photos and heard that I played violin and loved the idea of doing pictures. My mom heard about her from another family member.

What has been the best part of being a senior this year?
The excitement everyone has. Even though a lot of is, including me, are going into the unknown there's this excitement that continues to drive us and I find it so cool.

What will you miss most about high school?
The people, I've surrounded myself with people I love and adore and I'm going to miss not seeing them every day.

What are your plans for the summer/after high school?
I plan on attending college at University of Vermont.

Picture
Photography by Kathlene Woltemath Photography

What is your family like and where do you fit in? How do you stand out?
I come from a big family, I have 7 siblings total and I'm the third youngest. I've definitely gotten my loud personality because of them as well as my mediator personality.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present mental health topics because I find that sometimes they're still considered taboo. I feel with the stigma around mental health, it creates the idea that it can't be discussed. I always enjoy talking about it with others because I find that not only it creates a more comfortable bond between me and that peer but it also allows for them to be more open with their feelings in general. I always normalizing the talk around mental health especially with people within my age range.

Savannah Steward – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Chris Shabay Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Savannah has an impressive academic record, work ethic, and possesses strong leadership skills. She maintains a 3.712 GPA and is an active member and leader of her high school's Ceramic Club, Environmental Club, and A.C.O.L.Y.T.E.S. She has received Division 4 Awards on all pieces submitted in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) during all four years of her high school career. She also received perfect scores and was a SPARK creative showcase finalist during her junior year. Savannah has been accepted to Texas Women’s University, which she will be attending in the fall.
Picture
Artwork by Savannah Steward

Tell us about the Ceramic Club and what you love most about it?
The ceramics club started out as an excuse for some of my friends to hang out after school and turned into a sort of pillar in my school's art community. What I love most about it is that it gives me a real opportunity to create free of stress with my friends and other peers.

What is a memorable piece you've created from it?
The Ceramics Club frequently held fundraisers where we sold handmade pots, many of which I made myself. But my most memorable piece would have to be Winnifred, a black rabbit in a dress inspired by the regency era.

What has been your biggest impact with the Environmental Club?
In my opinion, the Environmental Club's most impactful project was our produce garden. We grew things like tomatoes, green beans, and herbs, we even tried to grow corn. While our attempts weren't as successful as we hoped, they built a great sense of community and we were able to grow our club and learn about growing our own produce.

What is A.C.O.L.Y.T.E.S. and what is your role in it?
A.C.O.L.Y.T.E.S. stands for Arlington Community of Lovely Young Teens Excelling in Service. It is operated by the Xi Theta Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. As of right now, I'm just a member learning how to give back to my community, although I hope that someday this may be a gateway to greater opportunities.

What has your experience been like with VASE? What has been a favorite winning piece and what is the story behind it?
Although VASE can definitely be very stressful, it's very rewarding to put time and effort into artwork and receive feedback and even be commended for the work done.
My favorite piece would have to be the very first painting I submitted to VASE. It's a painting of a woman partly inspired by neoclassical art and contemporary southwest paintings. It was a very big learning experience and even though it's not my best work, I hold it very dear in my heart.

What else would you like to talk about?
I love to create art such as drawings and paintings. Last year I submitted one of my paintings into the SPARK student creativity showcase and was a finalist. My painting is currently on display at Dallas Love Field.

What is SPARK and what was required to receive a perfect score?
I'm not entirely sure what the criteria are, but according to my feedback, the composition, use of color, and message behind my piece were favored by the judges. For me scoring at the top just meant another chance to share my work and feel a sense of accomplishment.

How did you find and why did you choose Chris Shabay Photography for your photographer?
I found him by doing an internet search and I decided to choose him because of his award-winning track record and his diverse portfolio. I felt that he would be able to capture what I had envisioned for my senior photos, and what I received was beyond amazing!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I had the most fun during my photoshoot. I loved being able to show off all my best outfits in so many different and fun locations.

Picture
Photography by Chris Shabay Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I was able to graduate a semester earlier than the rest of my class and I am currently taking courses at Tarrant County College until I transfer to Texas women’s in the fall, where I will start as a sophomore.

Why is getting such high grades and graduating early important to you?
Getting good grades in high school means better school and scholarship opportunities. Graduating early was especially important to me because I wanted to get started in college early and get a head start on my career.

What are you studying in college and what do you plan on doing with your degree?
I plan to study fashion design, and I'm not quite sure what I want to do yet, but I'm hoping to see all my options when I go to college

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
One thing that I am very passionate about is historical fashion. I have loved and studied historical fashion ever since I was little. I can identify women’s clothing from almost any era and I love to share my knowledge with anyone willing to listen.

What is your favorite era and why?
My favorite eras are the Regency period and the Edwardian period. I think they have the most interesting silhouettes and the pieces used to build the outfits of the time are very unique. I own only one historical garment and it is a matching shirt and skirt set from the 1950s.

Alaina Hughes – Louisiana
Nomination by Mandy Hughes
Photography by Jon Nastasi Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Alaina Hughes is an inspirational teen. She’s overcome many obstacles! Both her parents got diagnosed with cancer. She helped us physically, emotionally, and always cheered us on. She was also a cheerleader for her school! This year her dad passed away. This was devastating, but she uses it as motivation. She said, “I’m my daddy's baby. I’ll live for him, succeed for him and make him proud.” She took short day to get a job and pay for college. She’s also a leader in FCA. They even nominated her for homecoming court. Despite these challenges, she always stays positive.

What is your family like and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
I have a big family. I am the last of 6 children from my Dad, and the last of 3 from my Mom. I feel like the role in my family is to entertain and cheer on my parents and siblings.

In what ways did you help your parents physically and emotionally? What was a typical day like with your help?
I helped my parents emotionally by uplifting them, praying with and for them, and always trying to stay positive for them. I would help them physically by doing more household chores, helping my dad get up, and even bringing them to doctors’ appointments and the hospital when they needed me to.

What do you wish others knew about what it was like for you during that time?
I wish others knew how hopeless and lonely I felt. When you know that every event will be the last one to spend with your dad, it makes it so stressful. You really want to make it perfect, because that will be the last memory of that holiday, or event. You want every minute to count.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I actually started in dance, I competed and won the national title in my age group. I started cheer in 7th grade. I was cheering and dancing. I loved being a flyer and tumbling. I quit dance when my dad got sick. Money was tight and I had to choose between cheer and dance. I chose cheer. I cheered up until my senior year. My mom and dad both had cancer and my dad was not going to make it through the end of the year. That fact along with other stressors made me come to the decision to quit cheer and spend more time at home with my family. I got a job to save up for my college expenses.

What is a favorite memory with cheer?
My favorite cheer memory was getting the pin it forward and making All American both my 8th grade year and again my 10th grade year. I was the first girl ever in my school to get the pin it forward in my 8th grade year. It was a very special moment of pride.

What is FCA and what is your leadership role in it?
I am a leader in FCA, we meet the day before each meeting and discuss the agenda for the next meeting. I like to lead in the worship song. I was one of the speakers this year. I shared my favorite verse and explained why it is so special to me.

What is a favorite accomplishment with FCA?
My favorite accomplishment in FCA was being nominated for Homecoming Court. I was truly honored that out of all the senior girls, they chose me for their nomination.

What will you miss most about high school?
I grew up in the same subdivision of my high school. SHS was my school well before I went there. I grew up watching the games, hearing the bells and “looking out for the crazy teenage drivers!” So I will miss more than just my friends and teachers but, my childhood as well. It is all centered around Slidell High.

How did you find and why did you choose Jon Nastasi Photography for your photographer?
Jon has taken my families pictures since we moved to Slidell. He took every baseball, softball, cheer, and action shots for us. Choosing him was an easy decision. He is always upbeat, positive and he produces amazing pictures.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
He allowed me to choose where I wanted to take the pictures. He and his son made it so much fun, we were shooting in the middle of the street at times. I felt like a model and during that photo shoot, nothing but happy thoughts filled my head. It was fun, fast paced, and a happy memory!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I work at a church aftercare and camp program daily after school. I help with children’s grades and love to make them laugh and smile. I aspire to uplift and bring joy to all the kids I work with. I also participate with Special Olympics, upside downs and the buddy walk, to raise money and awareness for children with special needs because those programs are near and dear to my heart.

What is your job like and what have you learned about the general public from it?
My job is so rewarding. I work at my church’s aftercare. I help children with their homework and share stories and love with them. I try to uplift them if they had a hard day at school and most of the time they uplift me in the process. I have learned that I am meant to work with children and it is my calling and passion.

What do you love doing most with the kids?
I love listening to them the most. You would be surprised how rewarding it is to just listening to kids. Showing them respect and kindness. They have a lot to offer if you just listen, and once you break that wall you can then inspire them as much as they inspire you.

What is a goal of yours?
My goal is to become a teacher so I can continue to uplift and help children and be an emotional support tool to any child that needs it.

Tell us more about your roles and responsibilities in the Special Olympics, upside downs and the buddy walk.
I help all the athletes in the Special Olympics. We help them stretch, warm up, and provide positive hype, so that, they will do their best. Upside downs is an organization that my Aunt Shelley is very involved in, they do amazing things to raise money for children with Down Syndrome. Every year we do a kick ball fundraiser to help this organization. The Buddy walk is also an amazing event that my whole family participates in yearly to raise money for upside downs. I want to get more involved in the years to come now that I am older.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
My presentation topic would be how to overcome adversities and disappointments in life. My parents both had cancer resulting with the death of my father earlier this year. I watched our whole family struggle financially and emotionally. i had to keep counting my blessings, and remind myself daily of things i have in my life that are positive for me to continue to be a positive role model and to keep pushing myself to be the best that i can be despite the circumstances. I often had to change courses and modify my path but my goals remained the same.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was a mindset more than a thing. I had to re-center, re-prioritize, and rearrange my goals, my life and my priorities my senior year. I was very superficial and took things for granted prior to that. I took a long look at my life and had to regroup, and now I am a better person for it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to really do what makes them happy and not to worry about what others may say or like. You need to find people who love your soul not your social status and no one will love you more than the people at home.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I will be teaching Elementary School at Florida Ave, the school I went to and where my sister teaches now.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to go to the beach. There is something so soothing about the water crashing into the sand. It is almost impossible to feel sad at the beach.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My mom would say my hidden talent is singing.

3 Things on your bucket list:
1. Travel to Europe
2. Get Married
3. Have Children

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom, she inspires me with her strength, work ethic, positive attitude and loving nature.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my positive attitude and outlook inspires others. I try to uplift and cheer on others to be the best version of themselves.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like to say thank you for this amazing opportunity.

Samuel Belcher – Kentucky
Nomination by Maggie Belcher
Photography by April Manning Photography
Issue 66 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sam Belcher is my little brother, he inspires me to work hard for things I am passionate about. Sam is a very talented guitar player, he has had no professional training, only himself and his guitar (and youtube tutorials). He is a talented athlete as well, he has played lacrosse throughout high school despite our school not having a team. He drives himself nearly an hour to Madison County so he can continue playing the sport he loves. He is inspiring because of his dedication.

What position do you play in lacrosse and what do you love most about playing lacrosse?
I play long pole defense. I usually play close to the goal and cover the offensive player at x position. What I love most about playing lacrosse is the fast pace of the game, it’s intensity and the friendships I have made. Lacrosse takes lots of hand/eye coordination, along with strength, speed and skill. I love to be one on one with an attack-man and defend the goal, cause a turnover and then clear the ball to the other end of the field to my offensive players. Friendships I have made in lacrosse are special and will last a lifetime. We depend on each other to make our team successful. My teammates hold me accountable when I make mistakes and we celebrate our victories.

What did you learn about yourself at 4H camp last year?
I learned that I can be a mentor to younger kids. For some of these kids, it is their first time away from home for more than one night. I was able to be a leader and help them navigate their way through 4H camp. I helped kids solve disputes, take responsibility for our cabin and taught them to work together. I was in charge of activities/games for groups of boys. I also made sure our cabin was on time for activities, meals, showers, and bedtime. I loved 4H as a kid and I wanted to help make it a good experience for these group of boys.

If you could play with any band, who would it be and why?
It would be a dream come true if I could play with Metallica. My dad introduced me to their music at a young age and I was immediately a fan. I got my first guitar at the age of 13 and have been playing every day since. Metallica is my favorite band. I can only imagine what it is like to stand on the stage in front of thousands of people playing with the band I have idolized since I was a little boy. I have never seen them play live but my parents got me tickets for Christmas. I will see them in Boston in 2024. I am so excited and look forward to checking Metallica concert off my bucket list.
