Lex Moffitt

Picture

Lex Moffitt - Texas
Nomination by Misty Moffitt
Photography by Grapevine Memories
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: The entertainment industry is undergoing a revolution, and Lex has every intention to be a part of it. After receiving her education in screenwriting and production, she will go on to push boundaries, opening new pathways for LGBT+ representation in media. Despite time commitments as the president of her high school's GSA Committee and working part-time as a tutor, Lex has dominated the academic scene, having been recognized as one of the top ten students in her over six hundred graduating class. Fortune favors the bold. With full-throttled determination, Lex will leave a better future for oncoming generations.

What are your plans to broaden LGBT and representation in media?
One of the most remarkable aspects of the LGBT+ community is that we are a united force across all of humanity. Race, culture, religion, and socio-economic background all have zero impact on a person's gender and sexuality. Not everyone is an LGBT+ member, but an LGBT+ member can come from anywhere. There is no other community on earth whose identity transcends all of these long-standing boundaries. Because of this unique bond, we have a chance to start breaking down some of these barriers from the inside; all we need to do is start writing and producing stories with LGBT+ characters who come from varying backgrounds.

Tell us about GSA and your roles and responsibilities in it.
As president of the Gay Stright Alliance (GSA) Committee, I am responsible for a small and particularly vulnerable percentage of my high school's student body. It is a balancing act that one has to be passionate about to manage. Throughout the year, the club must be thriving and accessible to those who need it, while also being discrete so that the club and its closeted members go un-outed and unharassed. Outside of club hours, I am responsible for evaluating my school's treatment of its LGBT+ members. Overall, the most significant aspect of my job is creating awareness and attracting members while simultaneously protecting members' privacy. In special cases, I need to evaluate certain club members' safety to see if joining GSA or coming out of the closet is a safe option for them.

What have your writing accomplishments been?
When I was in the eighth grade, we had to write a novel in eight months. I finished in six. I knew then that this was not only what I wanted but also what I needed to do for the rest of my life. That novel is now published, and now I have over fifty pieces ranging from short stories to screenplays. My most recent success was writing and producing a trailer for a feature-length film I plan to fully develop in the coming years.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be exactly who you are. Artists tend to see beyond the exterior level of things, feeling and articulating their ideas in an unconventional way. If you have an artist's soul, you're never going to be fully in sync with other people, and that's okay, but always be open to change. You should always be a little too curious and ambitious for your own good, but make sure you keep your wits about you. Embrace and take pride in your talents, but never settle; keep learning and testing your ceiling. If you want to impact history, then you can't let the world happen to you; you must happen to the world.

Picture
Photography by Grapevine Memories

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Since I was eight, I have participated in sports; I have a competitive streak, and athletics helped me learn how to focus that energy. Tennis and archery are my current favorite pastimes. As an introvert, athletics provided an opportunity to focus through my body as opposed to my mind. The exercise is good for me physically and mentally, and a little vitamin D doesn't hurt.

3 Things on your bucket list
Earning a pilot's license
Visiting every capital in the world
Participate in an archery competition

Briley Holder

Picture

Briley Holder - Georgia
Nomination and Photography by Stephanie Q Durham Photography
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Briley may be small, but she’s mighty! Despite being bullied at times, Briley is proof that mental toughness trumps physical strength. In the summer before her Junior year, she backpacked across the mountains of Europe with eleven strangers as part of a leadership program. Her journey took her across four countries in 23 days. There were times when Briley was crying in pain, asthma inhaler in hand. Instead of giving up she showed steadfast determination and persevered. As a result of that experience, Briley now confidently stands up for herself as well as others who are otherwise seen as weak.
Picture
Photography by Stephanie Q Durham Photography

What would you most like to be interviewed about? Tell us about it!
The summer going into my junior year, I decided to take a step out of my comfort zone and go on a backpacking trip through the Alps and Pyrenees in Europe. When I got to the airport and saw 10 girls I have never met, I immediately knew it would be the best and most challenging three weeks of my life. We hiked and slept in hostels, living out of a backpack the whole time, which is not something I was used to. We also got to go sea kayaking in Spain. This does not seem like a traditional “fun” trip, but I turned out to be the best experience of my life.

What is a favorite memory from that trip?
We were sea kayaking and my arms just gave out; I couldn’t paddle anymore, so me and my friend got clipped to the back of a speed boat and dragged behind the boat on our kayaks. It was the best time and definitely an unforgettable experience.

Picture
Photography by Stephanie Q Durham Photography

What is one tip you'd advise someone taking the same trip in the future that you learned?
I would suggest that you go into the trip with an open mind and a willingness to be pushed outside your comfort zone. The trip is 100% what you make out of it, and you have to have an open mind and a positive attitude, or you won’t have any fun. Make the best out of every moment because it flies by.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LSS) Student of the Year Fundraiser, which is an eight week fundraising event for LLS. I was able to raise $15K over the course of 8 weeks by giving business presentations at the corporate and personal level. All the teams that participated were able to jointly raise over $1.6 million for LLS.

What was your senior portrait experience like with Stephanie Q Durham Photography and what did you love most about it?
Stephanie truly is a miracle worker! She made everything so fun and tailored the whole shoot to my personality. She put so much time and consideration into the shoot. Surprisingly, I hate having my picture taken. But with Stephanie, I was laughing the whole time and actually excited to continue the shoot.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
The importance of staying true to who you are even when it gets hard. These days, especially with social media, it is so easy to get caught up in comparison. However, it is so important to realize people show the highlights on social media. Never change for anyone. It sounds difficult to do, but your differences make you stand out, so you should embrace them!

Nomination: Christian is a gifted multimedia designer, videographer, and social media influencer. He specializes in extracting thoughts and creatively bringing them to life. What do you love about videography? What do you like to film/create the most?

What I love most about videography is bringing the crazy visuals in my head to life! I honestly like to film and create my own content the most, for example I push out content every week for my social media platforms as an influencer. The type of content I create for myself is fashion videos (YouTube videos, Reels, TikToks, IGTV Post) and of course pictures.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have a multimedia business creating graphics, videography, and photography. I love men’s fashion!

Tell us about your Graphics business. What got you interested, how did you get started, and what do you love working on most?
I started my Graphics business last year in the middle of the pandemic, and it unexpectedly took off. At a very young age you could catch me looking out the window or wondering looking at a poster of some kind, the different styles, fonts, and mixture of colors is what caught my attention. My favorite type of Graphics to work on is Birthday Graphics.

What interests you about men's fashion? What would you say your style is?
The different styles and colors in men’s fashion is what grabbed my attention. My style is Casual/Streetwear. I don’t go too deep in casual; I don’t go too deep in streetwear. Take the two and mix them together then you have my style!

What will it entail for you to be a n upcoming social media influencer? How did you get involved and what about this endeavor excites you?
A Consistency of new and fresh content is mainly what it takes to become an influencer. I was thinking to myself one day, here are my exact words “You spend all this money on clothes and shoes and you’re not getting anything back from it”. Then I started thinking deeper, I could become an influencer then soon after growing my base monetize my social media platforms to gain profit from it. Not knowing what will happen as far as growth, viral videos, and new opportunities is what excites me the most.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I could talk about being successful and wealthy in life FOREVER. Me and my friends have long talks about our future now. I love it, having these talks with my friends opens my eyes up and makes me realize it’s really possible!

Madison Winkler

Madison Winkler - Kentucky
Nomination by Penny Combs
Photography by Kustom Dezigns Photography
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madison Winkler is an outstanding academic achiever with a 4.3 High School GPA she has maintained since 3rd Grade and a 4.0 College GPA. She is dually enrolled as both a full-time college student and a high school junior. She is also an outstanding softball player who inspires all her teammates and also the younger players she coaches to be the very best in all that they do. She has a heart of gold and will do anything for family and friends.
Picture
Photography by Kustom Dezigns Photography

Tell us about your softball career from where you started to where you are now.
When I started playing softball, I truly had no idea how much it would impact my life. I started with the Little Lady Colonels, a team that played locally just to have fun.  Now, I play for The Louisville Lady Sluggers 18u National Team and I play coast to coast. In November, I committed to the University of Louisville to continue the opportunity to play a sport I've loved all my life.

What has been your favorite experience and or accomplishment with softball?
My favorite experience/accomplishment was winning the TV pool championship in Colorado. It was a straight 7 inning game streamed on Flosoftball. We won 12-10 and I was 2-2 with 3 walks, and 3 RBI. We had walked out of the toughest bracket in the tournament undefeated.

Why has getting such a high GPA been such an important goal of yours?
When I was younger, having a high GPA was important because if I kept straight A's, I'd get $100. Now, my goal is to be Valedictorian and to go through my entire grade school career without making a B.

Picture
Photography by Kustom Dezigns Photography

What advice do you have for someone who wants to strengthen their GPA
My advice would be to learn how to study, even if you don't think you need to do so. School always came easy to me, but the higher level classes I started taking made it hard to stay confident in my work. I had to force myself to learn how to study.

What are your plans for college?
My plans for college are to go into Sports Administration and minor in journalism and entrepreneurship.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I've ever had to accomplish was committing to college. Due to recruiting rules, I wasn't allowed to talk to college coaches until my junior year. So when I was finally able to, it was as if the world hit me in the face. It was so new to me, because I hadn't done it since 7th grade, and many things changed in that time. Then Covid-19 came around and it stacked dead period upon dead period. I couldn't go on campuses or see coaches in person. I was recruited virtually. It made me lose confidence and made me so stressed. But in the end, I'm right where I've always wanted to be.

Picture
Photography by Kustom Dezigns Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
-In 5 years, I hope to be running my own business giving lessons here in my hometown. We have a very athletic town, but there are not many opportunities here to help the talent develop. I hope to be able to teach the younger players here and give them a chance to learn and grow. With my journalism degree, I hope to start my own blog and interview the kids and write them their own specific article. When I was younger, that always made me feel special, so I hope to give that feeling to them. A lot of the time, sports writers will focus only on the professional players, or collegiate stars. I want to be able to shift the focus on the younger players, so they have peers to look up to as well as professionals.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Griffin Joiner inspiring. Griffin is the assistant coach at the University of Louisville, but she played at UK and played professionally for the Akron Racers. She is from my hometown, which isn't very large. She showed me that you make your own future. You can choose to stay here, or you can choose to get out and make a name for yourself, while doing what you love.

Liliana de la Isla

Picture

Liliana de la Isla - Texas
Nomination and Photography by Lyons Photography
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: I am nominating Liliana because of the passion that she has for dance and her love for others. In the year that I have been working with her, not only has she grown as a dancer, but she has shown me how much she loves other dancers and wants them to succeed. From her willingness to help other dancers at photoshoots, to taking younger dancers under her wing and inspiring those around her, she embraces all of the qualities of a great ballerina and more. She is a mentor to the younger girls at her studio and I look forward to seeing what doors open up for her in the years to come.

Tell us your dance story from when you started to where you are now.

I have lived my entire life in the dance studio. My mom is a dancer, and she would take me to the dance studio with her when I was a baby. I loved watching her dance and when the dance teacher saw how much I loved to dance myself, she allowed me to start my first dance class at the age of 2. I began my training with the Ballet Folklorico of Dallas, trained at Forcher’s Dance Center, and now train at the dance studio my parents own, Baila Irving Performing Arts Academy. I have attended summer intensives with Momentum Dance Company, Ballet Austin, and was accepted into the Junior Intensive Program at the School of American Ballet in New York. I am currently part of the elite competition team Dance Force and a company member in the corps de ballet for Momentum Dance Company.

What do you love most about dance?
When I’m dancing, I feel like I can do anything. I feel almost magical, like I can fly! No matter what kind of day I’m having, I just leave it all on the dance floor. I love expressing my feelings through dance and being able to tell a story without using any words. To be able to use movement and your body to communicate a feeling or emotion is a powerful thing.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from dance?
My favorite memory and my greatest accomplishment has been playing the role of Clara in the 15th Anniversary production of my dance company’s Nutcracker. It was a dream come true. Not only did I get to play Clara, but my own parents played my parents in the Nutcracker and my best friends were all in the party scene. It was so special to be be able to share the stage with my Mom and Dad and so many of my best friends. I will carry those memories in my heart forever.

Picture

What do you love most about dance photo shoots with Lyons Photography and what has been your most memorable shoot & photo from it?
Photo shoots have helped me gain a lot of confidence and have helped me grow as a dancer. I feel I am more comfortable in my own skin and I hope that translates when I perform on stage. I love the way Tyler captures the beauty of a single movement. He’s so talented!
My favorite photo shoot was my 13th birthday shoot because I got to spend time with some of my closest friends. We just had so much fun together and every time I look at those pictures I smile.

What is it like to mentor the younger girls at dance and what legacy do you hope to leave behind for them?
It is really fun to mentor girls that are younger than me because I get to share tips with them that I wish that I knew when I was their age. I also love helping them evolve as dancers. To think that I could play even a small part in making someone a better dancer, gives me so much joy.

I want to be remembered as a dancer that was strong, worked hard, but always stayed humble. No matter how good you are or how far you come, there’s always more to learn. Like most things in life, success requires hard work. If you put your heart into it, your feet will follow.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I’ll be 18 years old. I hope to be accepted to Juilliard and pursuing my dream of becoming a professional dancer.

Picture

3 Things on your bucket list:

To dance on Broadway, to be in a movie, and to live in New York.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents inspiring because during the pandemic my they bought my hometown dance studio. On April 1, 2020, the dance studio that I called home announced that it was closing its doors due to the impact of the pandemic. I was heartbroken. Our community was devastated. The dance studio had been a part of my life for over 8 years and a part of our community for 62 years. It was then that my parents decided to invest their entire savings into buying and remodeling the dance studio. I’m super proud of what my family has done for me and for an entire community of dancers. They inspire me to work hard and to do good things. I hope our dance studio is around for another 62 years and brings as much happiness to others as it has brought to me.

Kadance Fredericksen

Picture

Kadance Fredericksen - Florida
Nomination by Amy R Miller
Photography by Meghan Basford Portrait Studio
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kadance chose to make lemonade out the lemons life handed her. Kadance was abused, neglected and often homeless in her early years. Kadance was then removed from the home by her biological father and stepmother who later formally adopted her. Kadance now spends her time between her lemonade stand, seriously, where she has raised over $25,000 for the Ronald McDonald House and her organization, Kada's Promise. Kadance, through Kada's Promise, brings hope and comfort to kids still living in dire situations by providing teddy bears and blankets to crisis centers, trauma centers, abuse shelters and counseling centers.

Photography by Meghan Basford Photography

What do you want us to know about your story?
As a little girl I was abused and neglected by my biological mother and stepfather. We were also homeless, moving from house to house, never staying in one place for too long. During this time, my only friend was my stuffed horse that I got for my birthday one year. That horse was something for me to hug and hold whenever I needed it.

Tell us more about Kada's promise and the mission. How did your story develop it?
Kada's Promise is a nonprofit organization that I started to give kids who are going through what I once went through comfort and support by providing hope through a teddy bear and blanket. I started Kada's Promise because I believe no one should ever have to go through the things that I went through and is a way for me to say that I have overcome my past. I want to help others do the same.

Picture
Photography by Meghan Basford Photography

Did Covid-19 alter your mission and if so, how did you overcome the obstacles of the pandemic?
Covid-19 did not alter my mission. Sadly, it only provided us with more kids who need these teddy bears. Covid-19 has left so many kids stuck at home with nowhere to go. More kids are being abused and neglected. School is often a safe place for many of these kids, and because of Covid-19, they have nowhere to feel safe.

Picture
Photography by Meghan Basford Photography

What goals do you have for Kada's promise for 2021?
For 2021 my goal is to bring comfort to as many suffering children as I can. More than just in the state of Florida. I would like to extend Kada's promise across the United States.

What was your senior portrait experience like with April Moore Creations, LLC?
My experience with April Moore Creations was amazing! She has such a kind heart and is incredibly genuine. She is just the photographer I was looking for in my search for my senior pictures. We can laugh and enjoy our time together on shoots. I admire April’s eye for photography because it is absolutely breathtaking. She took me to places I never would have imagined shooting at, and the photos were fantastic. April is unbelievably good at what she does, and she is one of the most humble and down to earth people I have ever met. I am so thankful I was given the opportunity to work with her!

Tell us about your cheer career from start until now.
I began competitive cheerleading in fourth grade at Midwest Extreme in Warsaw, Indiana. I cheered there for 3 years and I began to outgrow the program. The gym was facing many troubles and I was ready to try something new. I moved to Indiana Ultimate in Fort Wayne and Elkhart and met some lifelong friends. I have been at Indiana Ultimate for 3 years now and I have loved every minute. I have had the opportunity to compete at some huge cheer competitions including NCA in Dallas, Texas, The Cheerleading Worlds in Orlando, Florida, and I have been to The Summit in Orlando, Florida three times.

What has been a favorite memory and/or accomplishment with cheer?

My favorite memory through cheer revolves around the relationships I’ve made. During my practice, there is another team of younger girls also practicing. We often take turns performing for each other and cheering each other on. My favorite memory was when I took the stage at a competition and saw all the little girls from the gym there to cheer me on. After I was done competing, I thanked them for coming and they told me that they always come to watch me because they want to be just like me. This warmed my heart and made me feel like all the hard work I put in is worth it.

What is a FCCLA Chapter and what do you do there?
An FCCLA chapter is like a club associated with Warsaw High School. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, Community, Leaders of America. We have meetings every week where we discuss different community service or volunteering opportunities coming up. After school or on weekends we attend volunteering projects together as a chapter. We also have the option to create a project to take to state. Projects can be based on anything you think needs to change for the better. My group decided to create a nonprofit organization called Hearts from Home to give back to our American Heroes.

What does being the Vice President of your FCCLA Chapter entail?
As Vice President of Warsaw Community High Schools FCCLA Chapter, I have many responsibilities within the club. I am responsible for helping to plan meetings and snacks for our gatherings every week. I help to send out emails and reminders of important information regarding our upcoming events. I am also fully responsible for posting on our social media to share each meeting's highlights with the community.

What about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover how much I love traveling! I have been to Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, and England. I traveled to all the places with a group through the school called EF Tours, without my parents. It was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. I decided to go out into the community and try to learn from the locals about their town. I will never forget some of the people I met and their kind souls.

Tell us about your route in Entrepreneurship in Photography.
In 2018 I picked up my first camera! My grandmother asked me to help her take some business photos at a couple weddings for her as she was working as an officiant. From there I started shooting and realized I had a talent. I started an Instagram and began investing in my skill as well as local marketing from business cards, flyers, social media posts, and a website!  I had countless amounts of troubles from age and gender discrimination to local competition. But none of that stopped me! Just 4 quick years later I now have a full business shooting photos from north Georgia to south Florida for everyone from senior models to couples to newborns! With the help of close friends and family I was able to build a brand, soon to be an empire, for myself that I will forever carry on. Candid Captures is a huge part of me and what I stand for as a 16-year-old Hispanic woman entrepreneur and through my work I hope to inspire tons!

What charity and service projects have you liked best and what were your specific roles in them?
The list of my charity projects goes on and on from Toys for Tots to Holiday Pics in Paradise, which tops the cake for me! Holiday Pics in Paradise was an open event I held in the Florida Keys where I set up a shooting space for local families to get all dressed up and have a chance to get free family holiday photos! We had treats for pets, gifts for the kids, and even hot cocoa! On the first day of the event, I shot over 12 families! For all my events I am always the coordinator. So, I plan, coordinate, and am always super hands on in every aspect of the project!

Share with us your path of Christianity and why it's so important to you.
I was raised in a very religious household and have always loved the ideals of being a good Christian woman. There is no greater gift that we have been given than to share! Which is why I love His Word alongside charity! Faith and Christianity have been an anchor and a gift for me. During the pandemic and during building my business and truly during any time I was I need I reached for my faith. Since I was a little girl everything about Our God touched my heart. Now I am a part of an amazing church and have taken the time to read into my faith and share what I know. During the pandemic I held an all girls 6 week zoom course regarding women in the bible and got to teach amazing girls my age about how He loves us and how when it comes to God, He leaves no stone unturned, no story unheard, and no heart untouched!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

Plans for college

What are your plans for college?
I plan on attending Eastern Kentucky University. I would love to start my own business with architect and building houses or go into HVAC. I plan on working for Lowe's throughout college. By working for Lowe's I have the opportunity to make money while in college, but I also get to learn about the different things in the store that might help me whenever I start my own business.

What are you most looking forward to?
The thing I most look forward to is graduating High School and beginning a new chapter of my life. I feel as if I am ready for college and that I will excel in whatever I do. I am excited to be able to attend college and pursue my dreams.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I participated in Rogers Scholars, which is a program for upcoming seniors to provide opportunities to become leaders within our communities and also promotes community service. This program provided me with the keys to succeed in this world and the ways to become a leader within my community.

What did your duties entail in Rogers Scholars?
My Roger's Scholars duties included community service and being the leader of that service. Creating my own project to help the people within my community was something I will never forget.

What was a favorite leadership role in this service program?
I was able to create a "Cancer Care Basket Program," which included baskets of lotion, blankets, beanies, books, word puzzles and more for cancer patients within my community. This project was extremely close to me and my family as my grandmother has been battling cancer for the last couple of years. Being able to put a smile on the cancer patients and nurses was all worth the work.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?

I feel as if I could take sports with my peers very well because I watch so many different types of sports and know how they are played. Sports have made me the person that I am today and has been very important to me since I was a young boy. I am very passionate about sports and my respected teams. It brings out the competitiveness in me that could later on be used when competing against other businesses.

What is your favorite sport to play vs watch and why?
My favorite sport to play growing up is basketball. I always enjoyed being able to go outside and compete against my brother or friends. However, my favorite sport to watch is football. Football is so enjoyable to watch because you get to watch big strong guys go head to head and hit each other as hard as they can. There is obviously more to the game of football, but the hitting overall, is what makes it so exciting to watch.

Why do you think playing sports is important to teen development?
Playing sports is a huge roll in student development. Being able to participate in a sport or club and complete school work develops students to be able to use their time wisely. Sports also creates a team mindset for students by working together to accomplish one common goal. I understand that sports are not for everyone, but it has helped me in so many ways to become the person I am today.

Tell us about why fashion is so important to you?
Fashion is very important to me because it is an expression of the person. It not only expresses a person but also an entire culture. Fashion is very different around the world and because of that there are so many different looks that are magnificent. I also love how fashion always changes it is never the same. The reason I think that is so important is because it relates to us humans so much because we also never stay the same we always change.

What aspects of fashion are you most interested in?
The aspects of fashion that interest me the most is the use of bright colors. The use of bright colors only happens during spring and summer. That makes spring and summer fashion way more diverse because there are so many different types of colors to work with. Another aspect that I am very interested in is design. I love the way some designs reflect things in nature in a subtle way. Design is also ever changing and that is another reason why I love the use of different design patterns.

How would you define your style of photography?
I would define my style of photography as portrait photography. I love walking around the city with my friends and taking pictures of them in a natural setting. The natural setting for portrait photography I think is very important because it captures what an everyday person does and how there is beauty in the life in an everyday action.

What is your favorite travel destination and or memory for you?
My favorite travel destination is Fiji. I went there when I was seventeen years old by myself. It was such an adventure I sometimes find myself thinking about how much that place changed me. My favorite memory was a night when my friends and I were walking on the beach and looked up and saw the night sky full of stars. I think of that moment many times and I constantly think of the many shooting stars we all shared together.

What are your hobbies and interests?
I have many hobbies and interests that never fail to bring me new experiences and excitement in my life. One of the things I have loved to do ever since last March, is paint. Painting has been one of the many ways I feel I can express myself freely without judgement, my escape through my hardships. Other hobbies include working out, photography, and helping animals in need!

What are your plans for the future?
I have always strived to make the most out of my future, one of the many things my parents have instilled in me since I was a kid. Although I am currently undecided in where to go to college, I do plan on going and getting a degree focused in animals and possible going into the workforce afterwards, or attending veterinary or medical school to get a doctorate.

Share with us about your love for animals?
My love for animals is something I have always had. I feel particularly connected to them in many ways other people do not. I am empathetic and always strive to care for them in the best ways possible. My dog, Daphne, has been one of the key components in helping me realize I would love to do this as a profession. She got really sick last year and almost died and I stepped up and made sure that did not happen. Today she is as healthy as she can be. I owe it to her to constantly remind me why I chose to go down this road.

I love all the girls and Mrs. Angie always encouraging us while we pose for the camera!

What has it been like being President of your Senior year Entrepreneurship class? What do your duties entail and what has been a favorite memory or accomplishment?

One of my favorite accomplishments in this role include me being in charge of a fundraiser for collecting food donations for those affected by the tragic hurricanes in Louisiana. With my help we raised the most donations from anyone in the school and it left me with a sense of pride that I was able to be apart of making a difference in the lives of others!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about my story and how I am on a journey to help others.
I would like to specifically be interviewed about my disease as it doesn’t happen a lot in adolescents and is very rare.

Please share with us your story and the journey you are on to help others.
For years and years I was told by multiple doctors that nothing was wrong with me, go to therapy, and try antidepressants. I even had gotten to the point where I asked my doctor, “Could this be a brain tumor?” I had joked about it for years with my friends and therapist. Well, it turns out I was right. I remember the day after my surgery, I pressed the nurse button screaming, “I want to die.” Why am I on a journey to help others? They’re people suffering, just like I was, now I want to help give others answers.

What is your disease and what do you want others to know about it?
My disease is known as Cushing’s Disease. It is when your body produces way too much cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. This disease just didn’t affect one body part, it affected all of me. The list goes on and on of side effects I had. It caused a 7.7 mm brain tumor on my pituitary gland, and most of all almost made me want to take my life multiple times. For the rest of my life, I will need yearly MRI’s and medical check-ups. But for the rest of my life, I will be a survivor.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
Mental health. It is so important. I feel as there can sometimes be a stereotype on mental health such as telling someone, “get over it,” or “you're fine.” I almost took my life from being suicidal over the years and my underlying medical condition but what I always had was someone to talk to. The reason why I could talk about it forever is I have a story. A story that shows others they are not alone, and they can overcome their battles. Life has a purpose for everyone.

Picture
Photography by Toby Meyer
What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was going to college in High School while dealing with my chronic illness and being Class President. I did end up achieving a 4.0 GPA and being ranked number fourth in class the first year of college (11th grade) and have continued to be ranked as number four as my class load had to be put down due to my life changing surgery. The reason why this was the hardest thing for me is because I never let my illness define my capabilities when it came to school. I strived to make progress even when I thought I couldn’t. No B + would slip past me. I've always pushed myself to have straight A’s.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Is a road ever perfect? No. What do you do when there is a bump on a road? Sometimes you go by them, ride over them, or even get a flat tire but when you're stranded on the road of course you get the tire fixed and keep on rolling. That is like life. Keep on going and fight. Fighting is what my life has been as my mother had Stage Three Breast Cancer, my father was in a car accident, and my disease. I wouldn’t want anyone to be where I am today because everyone has their own journey, so you do you, and trust yourself.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I am interested in mental health care so I can save others' lives. I believe that mental health should involve more than just talking to a therapist. It's surprising that in psychology, it’s one of the only fields of studies that doesn't scan the organ that it is actually studying. What if someone had a brain tumor that was causing their insignificant amount of anxiety and depression? That was the case for me.
I would like to advance the amount of availability of mental health help around my local area, I see that there is an understandable amount of growth needed for this kind of service as I struggled to receive the proper help that I needed. Who ended up giving that significant amount of help to save my life? Indeed, it was me.
they reached out to me asking for help.
I would like to minor in Healthcare/Science because I have been in and out of hospitals during my adolescent years. I was at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital and it inspired me. I would have to walk a lap around the hospital and I saw the other kids in their bed. I saw their pain. Just wanting to live a "normal" life.
I want to offer children and adolescents answers to their overall health pain. It's greatly needed as I have seen over the years that mental health issues are mostly looked at as "anxiety" or "depression," which sometimes is not the case. They could have diabetes, PCOS, a thyroid disease, an autoimmune disease, or even Cushing disease because I had it so it's possible. There is always that chance.

Picture
Photography by Toby Meyer

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Easy, heading to my local gym to workout. My favorite part about going there is not just to work on myself but to help others. I also work here as well. I love to bring healthy treats in, motivate others, and share my story. The gym isn’t just a gym, it’s my second home.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? A hidden talent of mine is photography.
I started teaching myself at the age of twelve and have continued on. I call it, “Smile Photography” because the best part about photography is seeing individuals smiling. I have taken pictures from individuals, friends, family, wedding, and events. Most of the time I offer them to people who can’t financially afford the cost of getting professional pictures done.

3 Things on your bucket list
-Have an world wide event for people with rare diseases.
-Visit children hospitals and give them pig stuffed animals, also with a blanket like the U of M did for me.
-Share my story around the world with the hope of saving others lives. Not just about my medical health, my mental health as I thought I would take my life but I decided to fight.

Who do you find inspiring?
My father. He has had his own pain throughout the years. 4/17/15, he was in a car accident that will affect him for the rest of his life, has needed multiple surgeries, and most of all always made sure my siblings came first. Some days he wanted to be gone because of his chronic pain. Although, I’m not sure if I’d be alive today without him. My disease almost took my life, but my father took away my fear of wondering what was wrong with me, believing in me, and always being by my side along the journey.

Picture
Photography by Amber Elich
What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Motivation all around. I always get up again and again even when I fail. Others see that in me and so do I. I got a bad grade on a test, I retake it. I have multiple problems after surgery, I continue going to the doctor to figure out what is wrong. I cry at night, so I reach out for help.
My story is much longer than can be said but it has made people cry, want to reach out to me, and want to improve their own life.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

We have all heard the saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” How about, “when life gives you struggles, you fight.” It’s the best option we have. Don’t be afraid to do it alone, and someone will always fight with you.

Sydnee Fisbeck

Sydnee Fisbeck - Colorado
Nomination by Kate Moskowitz
Photography by Gina Lantz Photography
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sydnee is an incredibly dedicated and hardworking student-athlete. She balances school, athletics as well as being a strong sister, daughter, and granddaughter to her family. She has spent countless hours working to push herself to expand her limit and grow every time she steps on the volleyball court to compete. As a leader Sydnee strives to lead by example and motivates her teammates along with herself to work outside of their comfort zone. Sydnee is truly a well-rounded amazing teen, that is beautiful on the inside and out.

Photography by Gina Lantz Photography

Tell us about your volleyball career - from when you started to where you are now.

I started playing volleyball at the recenter in first grade where I soon found a passion for being on the court. My passion continued to grow so I decided to start playing competitive volleyball at the age of eleven. I continued to put my heart on the court and continued with competitive volleyball all throughout elementary and middle school. When I got to high school, I decided to play both high school and competitive volleyball which deepened my passion and my work ethic even more and made the sport year-round.
Now, I play both high school and competitive volleyball, seemingly at the same time, have won honorable mentions and all conferences, won tournaments, and I love every minute of it. From where I started to where I am now, I have grown a lot and I can say volleyball changed me as a person.

What has a favorite volleyball memory been?
One of the many memories I have has been traveling with my teammates and coaches and growing together. The connections we have made is incredible and the little memories such as carpooling to tournaments, and the laughs we share together make up the large memories such as winning games and tournaments.

What is it like being the first graduating class from your school?
It is a once in a lifetime experience that I am extremely lucky and honored to be a part of. As a part of the first graduating class, I get to be a part of setting the standards, creating long lasting traditions, and creating the environment for many classes to come. We are the class that is making history. I can't wait to see how what we created, will impact the future classes of the high school and how it will evolve into amazing things.

Tell us the story of your school.
My school was established in 2018 as a first-year high school where there were only freshmen and sophomore enrolled. The school was starting to establish sports teams, the theatre programs, and clubs. Going into junior year, there were only freshmen, sophomores, and juniors enrolled. At this point, systems were established, the environment we all strived for was coming together and it was amazing to step back and see how what we had thought of as an idea, was now a school tradition. Now, as a senior, the traditions are established, standards are set, and what we had in mind in 2018, is now a reality and an amazing one at that.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give to someone who wants to be where I am today is that your own happiness matters! Take risks, take chances, and don't mind what other people think of you because if that stops you from becoming what you want, it's not worth it.

Nomination: Abbey works hard in every sense. She maintains straight A's while staying busy with clubs and activities. She is in STEM Club and also did student council at school. Abbey has received most dedicated student awards this past year. She is inspired by the medical field, which is also a big passion of hers, and hopes to be a part of it in the future. What is your passion?
My passion is dancing. Not only is dance an amazing sport to be a part of, I get to share my knowledge of dance with other dancers. I get the amazing opportunity to teach kids every week at my studio, and it is a huge passion of mine to be able to share my love for dance with others. When I get to see students' faces light up when I teach, it is truly the best feeling in the world. I feel at home, and ready to take on anything when dancing. That is why dancing is my passion.

Picture
Photography by Michael Sullivan Photography

What is your coping mechanism for dance?
The way that I cope is through dance. Dance is not only just a sport, it's an art form as well. Dance is my way of expressing everything I am feeling. Think of it as a therapist, but even better. I am able to freely express my body with my emotions, whether it’s listening to a certain song, or storytelling. When I’m struggling with anything, dance is always there to put me back on my feet. Being able to dance is such a blessing because without it, I don't know where I would be.

Share with us more about your 3D modeling and your invention!

I love 3D printing. 3D printing is when I can go into a program, such as Inventor and make anything I want. I am obsessed with how amazing 3D printing is. I have created things such as key chains to little characters from cartoons that I like. 3D printing is an amazing tool that I love to use. From having nothing in a 3D printing machine, to having whatever you want made by filament is absolutely insane to me. It's something that inspires me everyday, and always keeps me busy.

Tell us about your community service. What is a favorite memory from it?
Some of the community service hours that I have done have actually been at my old elementary school. I go there on the field days to help out with all the fun activities. I personally have a blast with the kids. My favorite memory from it is when I get to see the kids having fun, knowing that I helped them have fun that day. I love being able to put a smile on anyone's face!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love the opportunity to talk about World Vision's mission.

What is World Vision's Mission and what does it mean to you?
World Vision is a Christian organization working to help communities lift themselves out of poverty, for good. They are committed to transformational development that is sustainable and community based, focused especially on the needs of children. World Vision’s mission has inspired, and moved me to action. I have participated in World Vision’s 30 hour famine for multiple years. The famine has given me perspective and opened my eyes to the struggles that people living in third world countries face. Despite their unjust circumstances, the people are beautiful, hopeful and inspiring.

I love to encourage others.

I sing, act and play both the acoustic and electric guitar. If I had to pick one, acting is my favorite. From Shakespeare to modern musicals, I enjoy developing and portraying any character.

What leadership roles have you had in high school and what has been a favorite memory from one of them?
I’ve served in leadership roles as Yearbook Editor, praise team leader, 30 Hour Famine group leader, and captain of my soccer team. My favorite memory from being captain was leading the pre-game huddle. I love to bring the energy and rally my teammates to play for the win. The excitement of coming together with my team before a game sets the tone for success.

Picture

What does being Yearbook Editor entail?
As the Yearbook Editor, I develop the theme and design the cover. I work with the team to take photos, edit and design pages.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
In a world of negativity, we have the choice to contribute to it or fight against it. Mean girls, others’ opinions, standards and expectations can perpetuate the lie that we are not enough. But we have a choice to break through the cloud of lies. Recognize mean girl mentality, know your worth, realize that you have options and choose kindness. Speaking from experience, I’ve been on the inside of a mean girl group, and upon my departure, I became victim to it. Now, I’m consciously countering it with kindness and acceptance of others.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
First of all, I was so honored to be nominated! I have put some thought into why I deserve this nomination. One common theme that I discovered through my community service involvement is the purpose to inspire young people, whether in my peer group or children. I love building a young person’s self-esteem to give them a sense of empowerment. There is no greater feeling than knowing that I have made a positive impact in someone else’s life.

What sort of community service involvement do you have? What are your roles and responsibilities?
I am a part of my school’s Interact Club & National Honor Society.  We do anything from cleaning up after games to putting gift boxes together for local organizations.  I have also been in involved with Shop with a Cop, which I absolutely enjoy!!

Now, I know you are probably asking for a specific topic. My life is blessed, and I enjoy every part of it. Picking one specific thing is hard when I am passionate about everything that you do.

First and foremost, I want to talk about my family and how I have been blessed with the best mom, dad and sister in the world. I want to talk about my amazing friend group and my time spent in high school. I want to talk about my 13 years of tumbling and my time in teaching little kids how to tumble. My awesome job at Maurices, where I try my best to create the cutest outfits to inspire the best customers. I want to talk about my history in competing in pageants, getting to compete on the Miss Indiana stage and how it has shaped me into who I am today. I want to tell you about High School Cheer where I made Varsity my freshman year, making All American cheerleader and what position I play in Volleyball. I want you to know about all the community service projects I have done like Shop with A Cop, which is my personal favorite and creating Valentine’s Day cards for people in Nursing Homes. I want to talk about how I volunteer at South Knox Elementary School every day, connecting with little kids and helping them to read and write. I want you to know that I have an internship with the Elementary School Counselor so that one day I can be like her. I want to talk about how, in addition to all of this, I am a student first: a Junior, with a 3.8 GPA, who is taking a full load of college level courses so that I am best prepared for my future.

I want you to know all of me and my story so that I can inspire other teens. My story has a purpose and it is to empower others.

Tell us about your involvement with Sharon Holy Photography? Why are senior portraits so important to you?
I am on the SHP model team with a wonderful group of girls. Due to Covid, we have only been able to do one group shoot but we are only doing (mostly) individual shoots now. I joined it knowing that I would be put out of my comfort zone, and I have been. This experience has allowed me to express myself in different ways that I would never think possible.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my leadership and what has made me a leader.

What has made you a leader?
When I was younger, I always cared about what people thought. I would be overthinking things like what to wear to school, if my makeup looked okay, something I just said. I could never be myself. The thought of being judged radiated a horrible feeling throughout my body. The sport of softball has really helped me come out of my box and become more sociable. I have had incredible teammates and coaches that have shaped me into the leader I am today. Seeing people older than me be leaders influenced me and I knew that I would be one when I grow up. It was a goal of mine that I never thought I could accomplish because I was afraid of what others would think. But in reality, being a leader is someone who wants to move towards that better vision and now, I could care less what other people think.

What qualities do you think are essential in a leader, and what do you think is your personal best leadership quality?
Being a leader requires purpose, approachability, and passion. When you bring exhilaration and positivity to the table, it becomes contagious. Being around someone who gives constant criticism and negativity is not enjoyable. It is not someone who I would ever view as a leader. People are more likely to follow and look up to people than enjoy being around. I believe my best leadership quality is passion. Being passionate about somethings helps bring a larger vision and determination to the group you are leading.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my free time, I enjoy helping little girls how to play softball. I love seeing their big smiles when they finally understand how to do something!
I am also a 2nd-degree black belt in Taekwondo. Getting this was a very big accomplishment for me when I was younger and the process has shaped me into the person I am today.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
It would either be working out or softball. I have been playing softball since I was 8, and have been working out since I was 14. I recently got into consistently working out over a year ago and it is now a big passion of mine. Both softball and working out put me into a state of mind where I don't think about anything going on in my life. It puts me in a different place that I love.

What do you want us to know about your everyday life, family and friends?
My family and friends are not only my biggest supporters, but truly the reason I continue to push myself every day to work hard and accomplish everything I hope to achieve and gain in life.

What are your interests?
A couple of my biggest interests are definitely soccer and like most teenagers, music and movies/shows. I love being able to play soccer with my friends and just have fun together on the field. I also enjoy spending my free time watching my favorite movies and shows, right now my favorite show is definitely Grey's Anatomy.

Picture

Tell us about your soccer career.

I started playing soccer at about 4 years old and played on and off up until my 3rd grade year. Then, when I started high school this year, I decided to start playing soccer again for my high school. I usually play left back but if needed, I will be moved around on defense.

What is a favorite accomplishment with soccer?
Since I just started playing again this year, I wouldn't say I have a favorite accomplishment, but just being able to work together, play, and win as a team with my friends is definitely accomplishment enough, especially with the school year we've had.

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I work extremely hard to achieve my goals, maintain my grades, and keep not only myself but those around me as happy and healthy as possible. I am also tremendously close with my family, especially my siblings. Without my family and the support they offer, I wouldn't be where I am today.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would talk about the importance of self-love and self-confidence. I would choose this topic because I believe it is extremely important to love and feel comfortable with who you are. Everyone deserves to feel like they are worth something.

Picture
Photography by Arnold Garza Photography

What is a self-love activity you can describe is a great way to feel good about yourself?
I believe that the simplest things really bring you to feel good about and love yourself such as, looking at yourself every day in the mirror and listing at least one thing you love about yourself. Whether it be a physical trait or a personality trait, I truly believe that once you realize how many beautiful things there are about yourself, you will begin to love you for you.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
My future aspirations to be a nurse and work in the medical field.

What is your dream career in the healthcare field?
My dream career is in Nursing. I love kids, so I am looking into Pediatrics, Labor and Delivery, and the NICU.

What are your plans for that? What made you choose that career and what are your hopes for your future?
I plan to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and apply for their Nursing program after completing my basics. Growing up, I have always had a fascination with the human body, and how it works. I also have extended family members who work in the Healthcare field, and everything about their careers interests me. I hope to obtain a bachelors or master’s degree in this field.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to cook, bake, draw and paint, sing, and learn new songs on my ukulele and the piano. Whenever I have downtime from work, school, or caring for my siblings, that is what you will find me doing. A healthy diet and exercise are also extremely important to me, and recently I have been cooking new healthy recipes for my family.

It sounds like you love to create stuff! What is something you've created that you absolutely love? Tell us about it - and we'd love to see a picture too!
Something I can spend hours doing is art. I draw mostly realistic art pieces- nature and people. I drew a picture of one of my favorite singers and finished it during quarantine this past year.

What is a favorite healthy dish you love creating for your family?

What does being a part of the leadership in your youth church group mean and what does it entail from you? What do you like best about this role?
Being a part of the leadership in my church's young women’s youth group entails helping plan and carry out weekly activities, coming up with service activities to help the community or other church members, and getting to know and keeping in contact with all the girls in my group to make them feel loved. I love the opportunity of being involved and making sure everyone is included. Being close with the girls, I learn their interests- which we can incorporate in our weekly activities.

We love that you are a positive role model for pre-teens. What is this like for you and what legacy do you hope to leave behind to the next generation of teens?
My hope is that I will inspire other teens to always pursue their dreams and never give up. Make the most of every moment and realize that in every situation, good or bad, can become a positive learning experience. I would encourage them to see the good in everyone and take the time to recognize and acknowledge those traits.

Congratulations on your sports scholarship for tennis. How often do you practice, how long have you played, and what got you interested in the sport in the first place?
I have played tennis since I was in first grade. I joined the travel Frog Island Tennis Team when I was in the fourth grade. My aunt was a really good at tennis and I always looked up to her. She encouraged me to play. I practice five to six days a week during the actual season. During the off season, I do workouts to prepare for season. When the weather gets nicer, I practice at least three times a week.

Tell us more about your basketball career and successes as well.
I love basketball! I have played since I was a first grader. I played on my school basketball team from sixth grade and still play now. I was on the Merry Mule All Tournament Team my sophomore year. I was also named Honorable Mention for our Conference that year. Last year, I was named Second Team All-Conference. I have played on two different AAU Travel Basketball Teams throughout high school.

What clubs do you spend the most time with and why?
I spend the most time with Student Council and Pep Club. Our Student Council is very involved with various school activities. We decorate for some of the dances and help plan Homecoming activities. When I am not playing a sport, I like to attend other games with the Pep Club to cheer on my classmates.

Tell us more about what being a member of the FHS Bass Club entails.
Our FHS Bass Club schedules various tournaments in which we compete among our team. Each team has a captain, mine is a good family friend, Aaron Cummins. The team captain navigates the waters and gets us to where we need to be to fish. At the end of the tournament, there is a weigh in to see who has won for the day. The club organizer keeps track and the person with the most points moves on to Sectionals, where they will compete with other schools. I have really enjoyed my four years on the Bass Club!

Olivia Pedigo - Texas
Nomination by Jackson Pedigo
Photography by Gypsy Road Photography
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Olivia (Liv) Pedigo is my big sister and an inspiring teen. She is an athletic junior and a college basketball prospect that spends all her time on the basketball court until she tore her ACL during her 1st club tournament back last summer during COVID-19. She has fought her way back after missing her whole school season and even while she was recovering from her surgery, she was donating her time to help others in youth organizations. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the pain of having to not do what she loves, a surgery and rehab- she still has a sense of humor, a 4.0 and manages to make me want to be more like her.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
Overcoming hardship and adversity

What do you want us to know about hardships and adversity and how you overcame them?
I’ve learned that without hardship and adversity, there’s no way to improve. Challenges help us to get better and every day we should all be working to be better than we were the day before. Patient endurance is one of my new favorite virtues.

Tell us about your basketball career. When did you start and what do you love so much about the game?
I started playing basketball when I was 10. I started just wanting to be like my mom who played in college and coached. I didn’t have the easiest going of junior high years and basketball became a place of expression. I was addicted to the game but it wasn’t until I tore my ACL last year and fought my way back that I realized how much I really loved it.

What is a favorite memory and/or accomplishment from basketball?
I have so many good memories but my favorites come from the long road trips that I have with my mom to and from practices and tournaments.

What injuries have you had, how did they affect your game, and what was your recovery like?
My ACL injury last summer was devastating. After missing the first half of club season due to a confusing year with COVID-19, I was so excited to get back on the floor and compete. The very first game back, I tore it in the first 45 seconds. I missed my junior school season. The hardest part of dealing with injury when you are a full-time student athlete is the mental aspect. Physically, it hurt but being forced to sit and not help my team or compete was transforming. As heartbreaking as it was, I’ve become so much better all around as a person and athlete. I want it more than anyone else because I know what it’s like to live without it.

What youth organizations do you volunteer with? Tell us about them and your roles within them.
My mom spent several years as a youth basketball coordinator and club coach. I have helped coach and work with kids from Kindergarten to 8th grade. I spent my elementary and middle school years volunteering by operating a scoreboard or keep stats every weekend at youth games as well as helping with practices during the week.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’m only as inspiring as my Lord and savior and parents have inspired me to try to be. If I’m in any way a reflection of them then I’m doing a good job. However, other than basketball, I also have high aspirations of going to state this year in track for shotput after only 7 months post- op. I am also a varsity cheerleader, have a 4.0, compete in UIL and a member of the National Beta Club.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Focus on you. Being a teen in 2021 is hard. There’s so many pressures and a lot of teens don’t have good guidance. Concentrate on bettering yourself and keeping your eyes on the goals that you set after high school. Keep improving yourself and moving forward no matter what obstacles you face. Hardwork is the only way to self-improvement. Everything I have and accomplished has been because of my work ethic.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Five years from now, I plan on being in my junior or senior basketball season in college and preparing to graduate and apply for law school.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
As busy as I am, my favorite thing to do is sleep.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can make a really good and annoying dolphin sound.  I also love to write.

3 Things on your bucket list
1- Be in a magazine.
2- Spend a month exploring Hawaii
3- Live on Magazine Street in New Orleans

Who do you find inspiring?
Kobe Bryant. He did so much for women’s sports in general but gave so much to the women’s basketball community.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I don’t think about being inspiring as much as I just try to always do what I feel is right and do my best at everything I do. I don’t worry about what others think about me. I think that’s one of the biggest battles that teens face. Everyone is so concerned about how they look and what people think of them. I focus on myself and always try to do the right thing and give a voice to things that I don’t feel are right. At the end of the day, it’s me that has to look in the mirror and be comfortable with and proud of what I see.
