Abigail Kent - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Kristina Kent
Photography by Krystal Kaye Images
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Abigail Kent is an amazing young lady! She has Cerebral Palsy, but she doesn't let that stop her! You name it, she's done it! Student council, theater, cheer, varsity soccer manager, scuba diving with sharks she doesn't let anyone tell her she can't! Abby was once told she would never be very good at math; well she now has the highest grade in her class and was even nominated "math student of the month"! Abby is graduating in the top 15% of her class and plans to go on to college to study theater.

What challenges have you overcome through having Cerebral Palsy, and how have you kept a positivity outlook on life?
The main challenge I have overcome is people’s attitudes towards my disability. People often underestimate me or make assumptions about my intelligence based on the fact that they see the wheelchair, or the spazzy body first. To me, having cerebral palsy is my normal, so I think I have the same outlook on life as any other teenager. Sometimes it is positive and sometimes it is not so positive, but it really doesn’t have much to do with me having cerebral palsy.

Tell me about the different extracurricular activities you are involved in including student council and being manager of your varsity soccer team.
I was in Student Council my freshman year. I helped with decorating for the Homecoming dance by attaching a wagon to my wheelchair and helping move the heavy stuff. I was in Theatre all through high school and participated in the school play for the last 3 years. During the plays, I was the assistant stage manager. I was inducted into the International Thespian Society my junior year (TROUPE 4101 FOR LIFE)! I was also the manager of the varsity girls’ soccer team my sophomore and junior years, and was member of the sparkle cheer squad all 4 years of high school.

How has your dedication to math resulted in you having the highest grade in your class while also being nominated as “math student of the month”?
I was told my entire life that I would not be good at math because of the way I learn. I was in special education for math up until my Sophomore year, when I had a teacher notice that I was really good at math. We decided to try regular math classes and it turns out, I am really good at it! I was determined to make sure everyone knew I was good at math so I studied hard and did my best every day!

What was your experience like scuba diving with sharks, and what inspired your love of sharks?
Scuba diving with sharks was a little scary but so much fun! I dove and swam with nurse sharks. I have even let a nurse shark lay in my lap while it was fed and I kissed it’s head too! I have loved sharks for as long as I can remember. My favorite shark is the Mako shark. I think sharks are misunderstood because people automatically think they are mean and vicious creatures just by looking at them, kind of like how people assume I am dumb or don’t know what is going on just by looking at me.

Picture
Photography by Krystal Kaye Images

Tell me more about your plans for the future including going to college to study your passion for theater.
I plan to start taking basic classes at NCTC in the fall. I also plan on joining a super cool theater troupe that is just for people with disabilities to get experience in the field.

Picture

If you could plan a model group or ad campaign for models in wheelchairs or with disabilities what would this look like? Be creative tell me everything about it!
I think the perfect ad campaign for people with disabilities would be basically just a normal ad campaign in which the people in the pictures just happen to have a disability. I don’t think people with disabilities should be portrayed as special or fragile. We are normal people who do normal things, and I think that we should be represented as that. For example, two friends having coffee and “oh, look, that girl is a wheelchair user!” So basically a shoot that shows people with disabilities as normal everyday people.

Mason Norton - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Chele Jones Photography
Issue 29 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I want to nominate Mason Norton for his incredible talent and enthusiasm for theatre and music.
He is an amazing, courageous, whimsical kid who always marches to the beat of his own drum and owns it! He's not afraid to be authentic to who he is and is always kind and helpful to everyone he meets.
I really admire Mason's fashion sense and always vibrant style and personality, as well as his willingness to get super creative for photoshoots. Not only is Mason an excellent actor, but he's a fabulous model, as well!

What do you enjoy most about theatre, and what has been your favorite memory through performing in front of others so far?
I enjoy being able to perform as someone else and be able to bring someone’s story or play to life. My favorite memory is having moments that really pull people into the story and make them cry or smile or even get angry. I also love being able to create my own special touch to characters. I want to make people proud with what I do.

Tell me about your involvement in the Zach Theatre pre-professional acting conservatory and how it has influenced your passion for acting.
It has shown me what theatre is like out of high school when you have a good professional workspace. I have learned so many things that I wouldn’t have been able to get the chance to touch on until college and it makes me want to pursue theatre even more. I have also been able to connect with more people outside of school and gain friends I never thought I would’ve been able to.

As an avid animal lover, what type of animal would you consider your favorite, and what impact do animals have on your life?

I would consider either the Barn Owl as my favorite or a Cheetah because they are so agile and graceful but very delicate and precise animals. They have always been a huge part in my life. I have always cared for animals since I was young; when they would get hurt, I wanted to be the one caring for them so I would always put fake casts on them and sign them to make them feel better. And now I’m older, I want to work in the vet clinic at my school.

Can you tell me about your love for traditional Chinese tea culture, and what you find most interesting about it?

I find it interesting how delicate the whole process is and how much there is to know about it. Usually I drink tea with milk and honey in it but when I first tried the traditional style it blew me away. The amount of flavor that comes from each different tea is overwhelmingly amazing.

As an inspiration to others, how do you choose to lift up your peers through encouragement and support in your daily life?

I mainly express that no matter what, I am always here for anyone in need. I always try to give positive feedback or constructive criticism because tearing down others only makes everything much worse. And I would like to be a voice for people who feel like they don’t have anyone like them.

Brooke Cannon - Pennsylvania
Interview by Caroline Alegado
Nomination by Kim Cannon
Photography by Captured Yew
Issue 23 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Brooke is going into her sophomore year at CAPA. She is an honor student and finished her freshman year with a 4.2 GPA.

Brooke has been dancing for 11 years. Her home studio is the Philadelphia Dance Center where she studies many styles of dance in their pre professional dance program. She is also member of the Beat Addikts United performance team. This summer she will be attending The Rock School of Ballet's summer intensive.

Brooke also enjoys theater, and just finished her 6th show with Brick Door Productions. She has also been their chorographer for several shows.
Picture
As a member of Beat Addikts United, what experiences and/or performances have you enjoyed?
I always enjoy dancing with Beat Addikts United! The 2018-19 season was my first year on their performance team and I loved it. My favorite BAU performance is their annual showcase. It's a unique show and a lot of fun. Many choreographers and dancers are involved, and each performance has a theme and/or tells a story.

What is your favorite style of dance?
I love many styles of dance and enjoy learning new ones, but right now my favorites are contemporary and hip hop. I can’t choose just one.

I know you have started choreographing shows. How does this compare to dancing and which do you prefer?
Choreographing has been a new challenge for me. It has allowed me to understand what many of my teachers and choreographers do and has introduced me to another side of dance. I really enjoy choreographing, but I still have a lot to learn. I’m very thankful for the opportunities that I have been given, but I still focus on my dance training. It's hard to say which I prefer, but I want to continue to pursue both.

Picture
How do you balance school and dance?
My academics have always been very important to me. I love dancing, but my schoolwork comes first. Juggling both can get stressful at times, but doing what I love helps keep me focused. A lot of times I try to start homework when I have time in school, and then finish it before or after dance class.

Who inspires you in your dance and theater career?
The people that inspire me the most are my teachers, directors, and fellow performers. We push each other to be our best. I feel grateful that I have a strong support system filled with people who are passionate about the same things.

How do you plan to use the lessons you learned now to help you in the future?

A big lesson I’ve learned is that success comes from hard work. Being grateful for everything you’ve accomplished along the way is crucial, because dreams don’t come easily. This mindset will help me in the future, because it reminds me to look back on how far I’ve come.

Picture

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I have a few pastimes that weren’t in my nomination. A few of my favorites are going shopping, surfing, and watching Stranger Things!

Dawson Holder - Texas
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Lisa McNiel Photography
Featured in Issue 16 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Dawson Holder is open and warm, his smile and quick easy hugs put people at ease. Dawson has always been beyond his years. He is an avid reader, loves to sing and listen to music and has been acting since he was seven. He enjoys having conservations all day long with grownups. His hungry mind has him constantly reading books and acting in musicals. In addition to Music Theatre, he's involved in choir, debate, and politics and enjoys reading, singing, dancing, and writing. His favorite memory is singing in Carnegie Hall with his friends, and his favorite quote is from Brave New World by Adous Huxley, “But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.”
Picture

Theatre, Politics, and Law!? Oh My!

What has been your favorite role in theatre and why?
Last year, I played Donkey in Shrek the Musical at my high school. During the rehearsal process, I strove to redefine Donkey as so many had seen the character portrayed on the big screen. I did not want to be a mere imitation of Eddie Murphy’s Donkey; I tried to invent and impress upon the audiences’ minds Dawson Holder’s Donkey. The role forced me to delve into the depths of my theatrical giftings and stamina to sing, dance, and act my way across the stage for at least an hour and a half every night. Though the production is titled Shrek the Musical, after seeing the play, many family members, friends, and even strangers claimed that I carried the show on my back. This experience made me realize that I should never choose to audition for a role for its perceived notoriety; instead, I should audition for and perform in parts that challenge me to grow as an artist and offer opportunities to exert my leadership in unexpected ways.

Picture

What is your favorite thing about being involved in politics?
Well, I started musical theatre at the age of seven and have been in over thirty productions since. However, when looking for a career, I wanted to pursue something that would not only appeal to my creativity but also cater to my passion for logic and rhetoric. Politics seemed to be the perfect way to do just that. And even though a career in politics started off as a convenient way to indulge my interests, it has really developed into a way of life that I love. I wake up every morning, listen to political podcasts, and read the New York Times. I am most excited about going into politics because I will be doing something that I cherish and helping thousands of Americans at the same time. I plan to change the foundations of the way we do politics. I am tired of seeing divisiveness between political parties and intend to champion compromise as a political candidate and officeholder.

How do you plan to pursue a career in politics?
It is quite difficult to just go into politics unless you are a political scientist or campaign manager, and I figured that the best way to establish credibility within communities would be to become a lawyer. I have recently decided that I want to be an entertainment lawyer, so I can become a producer on Broadway. I already know the interworkings of theatre from an actor's perspective, and I have always been a big-picture kind of guy. After a decade or so of that, I will move on to run for office as a U. S. senator.

Zach Smith
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination & Photography by David Hamrick Photography
Texas
Issue 15

The Nomination: The very first thing we noticed about Zach Smith was how polite and respectful he is. He has a servant’s heart and loves working with others. He’s a great leader. He has worked with the special needs kids, including their special Olympics. He is a currently involved with P.A.L.S. (Peer assistance and leadership) at school which is a mentor program for the youth. Zach has been involved with theatre arts since the fifth grade, even winning best actor in UIL competition his 8th grade year. Even though his schedule didn’t allow him to take theatre arts this year, he still volunteered his time and helped with the annual haunted house. He is active in Football and Basketball, but Zach’s biggest passion is baseball. He aspires to play college ball and obtain a business degree and hopefully start his own business one day.

Tell me about P.A.L.S that you are involved in at your school.
P.A.L.S. is a program in which you help kids from Kindergarten all the way up to 8th grade. You help them with schoolwork and spend quality time with them learning about them as they learn about you and build a relationship with the kids. It is a guidance program to help kids with struggles. It is an amazing program.

Why do you think you are so inspiring?
I feel like I am a strong leader and follow what I believe in even if it goes against what is normal, I like letting people know how important they are, and I have a strong work ethic.

What are your favorite sports and why?
I love baseball because it has helped me realize how much a team can impact you for the better and I think that in life as in baseball, you may fail a lot, but it teaches you to handle adversity and try harder to better yourself and those around you.

How did you become interested in theatre arts?
I was in 7th grade when I first tried my hand at Theatre Arts, I really loved it not only because of the plays and rehearsals but the relationships you build with those involved. You make many new friends while bringing a play to life and putting on a show to entertain and audience is truly an amazing experience.

What are your plans for after graduation?
I plan to go to college and get my business degree while playing college baseball and then start my own construction business.

Interview by Shaina Zaccagnino
Nomination by Shannon Wickware
Photography by Brooklynn Alexander Photography
Oklahoma

The Nomination: Ally Wickware just released her first original song “Mean to Me” on iTunes, Spotify, etc. She plays piano & ukulele and is learning guitar. She does dance, theatre, art & kickboxing. She was chosen for the High Plains Leadership Team, volunteers in the nursery and works at a boutique where she does styling, modeling & social media.
Picture
How did you become interested in being a performer and how did you start?

I’ve been singing for longer than I even remember. We have home movies of me as a toddler singing country songs into a toy microphone at the top of my lungs. I then got into dance and discovered my love for being on stage! I’ve done everything from dance competitions & vocal performances to talent shows, pageants & a Broadway Revue.

How were you able to write and record your first original song, Mean to Me?

I co-wrote the song “Mean to Me” with my vocal coach, Bobbi Holliday. She helped me put my feelings into words and form it into a song that I am so very proud of. I wanted it to have a retro-pop, 80’s vibe and I love how dreamy it turned out. I recorded it with her husband, Nathan, who is a producer. I also got to shoot a music video for it that will be coming out soon!

Click here to listen to "Mean to Me"

Who has been your biggest influence in the music industry and why?

I’m so thankful for the opportunities I’ve had working with Bobbi over the years. I love her! She is definitely my biggest influence and mentor. I’ve also loved getting to know & sing with Jilian Linklater from Nashville. She is the sweetest person and a soulful singer/songwriter. I’ve been a huge Taylor Swift fan from the beginning. Her music really inspires me. I also love Halsey & Ariana Grande. They are so talented.
Picture
Tell me a little bit about the Student Leadership Team you were chosen for.

Besides homeschooling, I’m a student in the Multimedia Production Program at High Plains Technology Center. As a member of their Superintendent’s Leadership Class I’ve gotten to take field trips and hear from professionals in many different careers. These experiences cover things like leadership skills, goal-setting, business & professional etiquette and entrepreneurship. I’ve learned so much and had fun too. I’m excited for our visit to the Oklahoma Capital this month.

What do you like most about the nursery you volunteer at?

I volunteer in the nursery at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. I love getting to be around all of those babies! I’ve always enjoyed taking care of little ones. It’s so much fun to play with them and a great way to help out at my church. I also love my youth group and singing with the Worship Team.

Picture
Tell me a little about your job.

I work for a boutique The Hotpink Daisy and I absolutely love it! I get to style outfits, learn marketing and model things for social media. It is so much fun! I’ve always been interested in the fashion industry and I get to work with the coolest people. It is a dream job for me.

Anything else we should know about you?

I’m passionate about expressing myself and telling a story. I love all things art, travel and adventure. I’ve always been a dreamer and a creator. I have so much I want to share with the world and am just excited to see what God has planned for me.

Ally will be featured in Issue 17, coming out soon!

Interview with Zoe D’Angelo | Submitted by Alethea Harnish
Nomination & Photography by Marci & Christy Photography
Indiana

The Nomination:
Alethea is the daughter of friends of ours... we've known her since she was a little girl, but we’ve grown closer with her and gotten to know her much better since she was added to our MAC MOD SQUAD a couple years ago.

Alethea has struggled through the years to find her place and her voice in this world, but through that struggle she has grown stronger and has shown to be massively intelligent for her age. When times were at their worst, she still put her best foot forward and followed her road to where she is today. She is one of the most open hearted and TRULY accepting teens I have ever come across. She speaks out frequently about bullying, and self-image... encouraging other girls to not be ashamed about their bodies, but to embrace themselves and be proud, which is so needed in society today.

Her mother put it perfectly when posting some of her senior pics on her Insta...."She’s an individual blazing her own path in this world.”

This year she was inducted as the President of Herron High School’s National Honor Society, at the top 5% of her class in a school that is the top 1% of the country. She also performed for a room full of respected professionals in the city in a one woman show that she wrote, directed, choreographed AND performed by herself- for an internship that she co-created for herself.
Picture
1. What are some ways a person can enhance their confidence during their teen years?

Being a teenager can get hard sometimes, we all know it, but our teen years get so much better as we gain more and more confidence in ourselves. The end goal is to love yourself no matter what other people think of you... but it’s a lot easier to say that than it is to do it. I was lucky enough to find this confidence by joining my local youth theatre where I learned how to step out of my comfort zone, fall flat on my face, and get back up again. This isn’t the route for everyone (although you don’t have to be an actor to learn from a theatre class), but I did learn a few universal tips and tricks along the way:
1. Remember that no person is worth any more or less than you are
2. Free yourself from labels, you can be on the cheer squad AND in robotics club
3. Don’t TRY to be popular, you’re cool no matter your social status
4. Stop counting your likes and followers, you are SO MUCH MORE than your social media!
Picture
3. What would you wish you would’ve known when you were younger?

I would tell younger Alethea that it’s okay to not always fit in, and not to always have my best friend beside me. I had a rough time in middle school, and the beginning of high school. I didn’t know who I was or who I wanted to be. I spent lunches sitting on the bathroom floor because I was too scared to try and find a place to sit in the cafeteria. Since then, I have learned to be myself, and love myself no matter what!
Picture
4. What is the best advice you can give another teen girl reading this?

I think that the most important thing I have taken away from my 4 years in high school is that all the drama and hurt feelings aren’t worth it. Instead of pouring all your time and energy into social media or gossip, spend time reading an awesome book or creating a beautiful painting or practicing your free throw shot. You have been given this priceless experience to learn about whatever you want, so take advantage of it while you can!!

Mean Girls Theatrical Review

Images & Article by Sierra Zaccagnino

Mean Girls” Takes on Broadway and It Is Totally Fetch!

Everyone loves “Mean Girls”, the original movie about friendships, identity, betrayal, and all high school drama. Well now, you can see the story unfold on the big Broadway stage with an incredible cast. Although not every detail of the movie is seen in this new production, the main story, and even a few iconic lines, are still included. The show had a difficult task of adapting such a classic movie into a real musical. However, not only did the musical do justice to the original picture, but it also brought a whole new level of entertainment and excitement to the story.
Picture

There are multiple high-energy and dramatic musical numbers throughout the show such as “Apex Predator”, “Stop”, “Revenge Party”, and more. The songs in this show add an excitement factor to the production and give the audience a deeper sense of each character. Since this musical involves real people acting as the characters we all know and love, it shows more dimensions and layers of each character. This includes characters that maybe aren’t as highlighted in the movie as they deserve to be, such as Regina’s friend group of Gretchen and Karen. The audience learns more about Gretchen’s own personal troubles in her number “What’s Wrong with Me?”, and we get to see another side of Karen in her own song. Some other great numbers are Janice’s song “I’d Rather Be Me”, and Regina’s “World Burn”. Overall, the entire soundtrack of this new musical is worth listening to, even if you haven’t seen the show yet!

Recently in many Broadway musicals and plays, technology has made a greater appearance in the themes of shows and in the overall set designs. In Mean Girls the Broadway musical, most of the backdrops are created from digital images that create very realistic scenes. Everything from cafeterias, to school hallways, to house parties, is easily generated in an instant. This new use of technology also allows for more space on the stage, and therefore more room for elaborate dance and musical numbers (which are abundant in this show!). Given that these innovations have led to great results, it would not be surprising if other new shows started to use this idea for set designs as well.

If you still have doubts about the production of Mean Girls on Broadway, just look at any other review online. Critics everywhere love this new musical, and you will too! The soundtrack is fantastic in emphasizing every character, the set design brings a unique approach to the musical, and each character is so perfectly cast that you may even find yourself rooting for Regina George sometimes. So, get out and go see Mean Girls on Broadway if you want to see a lively and sensational new hit!
