Brooke Cannon - Pennsylvania Interview by Caroline Alegado Nomination by Kim Cannon Photography by Captured Yew Issue 23 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
The Nomination: Brooke is going into her sophomore year at CAPA. She is an honor student and finished her freshman year with a 4.2 GPA.
Brooke has been dancing for 11 years. Her home studio is the Philadelphia Dance Center where she studies many styles of dance in their pre professional dance program. She is also member of the Beat Addikts United performance team. This summer she will be attending The Rock School of Ballet's summer intensive.
Brooke also enjoys theater, and just finished her 6th show with Brick Door Productions. She has also been their chorographer for several shows.
As a member of Beat Addikts United, what experiences and/or performances have you enjoyed? I always enjoy dancing with Beat Addikts United! The 2018-19 season was my first year on their performance team and I loved it. My favorite BAU performance is their annual showcase. It's a unique show and a lot of fun. Many choreographers and dancers are involved, and each performance has a theme and/or tells a story.
What is your favorite style of dance? I love many styles of dance and enjoy learning new ones, but right now my favorites are contemporary and hip hop. I can’t choose just one.
I know you have started choreographing shows. How does this compare to dancing and which do you prefer? Choreographing has been a new challenge for me. It has allowed me to understand what many of my teachers and choreographers do and has introduced me to another side of dance. I really enjoy choreographing, but I still have a lot to learn. I’m very thankful for the opportunities that I have been given, but I still focus on my dance training. It's hard to say which I prefer, but I want to continue to pursue both.
How do you balance school and dance? My academics have always been very important to me. I love dancing, but my schoolwork comes first. Juggling both can get stressful at times, but doing what I love helps keep me focused. A lot of times I try to start homework when I have time in school, and then finish it before or after dance class.
Who inspires you in your dance and theater career? The people that inspire me the most are my teachers, directors, and fellow performers. We push each other to be our best. I feel grateful that I have a strong support system filled with people who are passionate about the same things. How do you plan to use the lessons you learned now to help you in the future? A big lesson I’ve learned is that success comes from hard work. Being grateful for everything you’ve accomplished along the way is crucial, because dreams don’t come easily. This mindset will help me in the future, because it reminds me to look back on how far I’ve come.
What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination? I have a few pastimes that weren’t in my nomination. A few of my favorites are going shopping, surfing, and watching Stranger Things!
