Nomination by Amanda Frankenfield
Photography by Thomas Kay Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kaela Frankenfield is an Inspiring teen. She not only works hard for what she wants but has a passion for it as well. She loves to share her talent to her younger students. She has student taught since the age of 12. She now has her own group of students. Not only does she dance on average of 10+ hours a week but also teaches dance about 15+ hours a week. She is also on her Dance Company and Tap troupe at her Studio. She enjoys Choreographing her student’s pieces as well as her own solos. She inspires younger kids to find a passion for what they love and never give up. Hard work and dedication always pay off.

Tell us about your dance history and how you got started.

I got into dance when I was in first grade. My teacher was the owner of the dance program at my local community center so I asked my mom if I could start dance. So my mom signed me up for a jazz class my first year, and I instantly loved it. I worked hard throughout that whole year. I stayed at the community center dance program for three years then moved to a dance studio and stayed there for many years. That Studio then closed, and I followed one of my teachers to the studio she went. I felt like I needed to be pushed more so I found a studio more geared towards technique. I have been there since.

What is it like student teaching?
Student teaching is where I get to assist the teacher with a certain class. I have now had the opportunity to be the head dance instructor where I work. This allows me to choreograph dances, pick costumes, create lesson plans, etc.

What dance style is your favorite and why?
My favorite dance style is tap. Tap is powerful, it has given me confidence and helped my self-esteem, it teaches persistence and hard-work ethics. Tap dancing also allows me to be a musician for people who cannot see dancing but, can hear it.
Picture

How were you able to stay positive through the time your mother was going through cancer treatments?
I was able to stay positive through this time because I thought of what my mom would want me to do; she would want me to keep doing what I love and push through the hardest of moments in life. I also knew that my mother needed me by her side in every step through her journey. I knew as well that if I stayed positive there would be a positive outcome for her health.

Picture

Why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel that I am an inspiring teen because I have never given up on my Love for dance. As we all know the dance world can be hard. There is always that one thing that you can’t get or that one student that always is front and center. I have learned myself to not look at others and let that bring me down but to focus on what I can do to help others not feel down from some of this stuff. I have always taught my students to build on what you are good at and work harder on what you are struggling with. I feel I have inspired many of my current students to do this. This is a hard thing to get past because we all judge ourselves and we sometimes get down by favoritism, jealousy, etc. I have taught/inspired my students to not let this stuff get in their way.

Picture

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I see myself in 5 years already graduated from college and working on my path to owning a dance studio.

Jack Benson - Pennsylvania
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Carol Benson
Photography by Jessica Briggs Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jack Benson has drive and passion for the stage and screen.  With a tough transition to high school, it became a home when he auditioned and made the fall play, chamber and men's choirs, the first weeks of school. He spent the next 2 years welcoming underclassmen and now, as a senior, is co-president of the school drama club and choir. He has enjoyed all the opportunities he’s had, including performing at the White House and Carnegie Hall, being a Bucks Co Playhouse Youth Company member, and his first screen job in a teaser ad for Facebook’s Superbowl commercial with Chris Rock.

What do you enjoy most about performing and what has been your most memorable experience?

Performing lets me give back to the community by telling stories that people, no matter your background, can draw something from. My most memorable experience was a rehearsal my sophomore year. We had been struggling for weeks, but that day, something clicked and we connected; in that moment we all knew we had it – no words were needed, we were a group of people, but one voice.

Tell me about the opportunities you have received including performing at the White House and Carnegie Hall.
I was truly honored. Being a high school student walking in the same halls and rooms of one of the most important buildings in the US, where so many important people have entered was humbling.
Performing at Carnegie Hall was one of the greatest experiences of my career because it is one of the biggest stages, not size-wise, but because it is a place most musicians strive to not only enter but to perform.

Picture
Photography by Jessica Briggs Photography

What effect does performing have on you, and how have you also built connections with your friends in high school that have turned into your second family?

Music isn’t just the sound you hear, it’s also the feeling it gives you. When I sing with my choir or drama club, I feel a deep connection with all of them. I have been fortunate enough to find a group of people that I can take that feeling off the stage with, and enjoy our time outside of shows as well.

Can you tell me more about your role as co-president of the school drama club and choir and what it also means to you?
Being a leader of these clubs means so much to me because they have been such an important part of my high school life, knowing that my teachers entrusted me with the responsibilities of running the clubs and being a liaison between staff and students is extremely gratifying.

How did the upperclassmen when you first got to high school take you under their wing, and how have you also done the same to present day underclassmen at your school?
They didn’t just stay in their existing friend group; they made an effort to talk to, and get to know me. I have tried to do the same with underclassmen by getting to know them personally so they come to me not just as someone who is older, but as an equal as well.

As an inspiration, how have you continued to include and welcome underclassmen while also representing a perfect example of what anyone can achieve through hard work and dedication?
I am a fun guy but I when it comes to performances and rehearsals, I want underclassmen to be able to have fun but understand what we are doing is important and needs to be taken seriously, so striking a balance is something I work very hard at.

Picture
Photography by Mike Maney
What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Climbing Mt Baldy at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. It is a 12,441-foot mountain of broken rock. Along with 8 of my fellow scouts and 3 adult leaders, I hiked 100 miles over 10 days at the ranch. Day 4 is when we reached Mt. Baldy – on my 14th birthday – and it took us about 2 hours to get to the top. When we reached the top we had the greatest feeling of accomplishment because it is one of the toughest challenges offered in the various routes you can do at the ranch. But what made it really hard is we had to summit and get back down to camp before an incoming storm hit.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would remind them to tell themselves that they are enough. Even when you are going through tough times, whatever it may be, there is always a brighter side. By working hard, you will get the reward you deserve.

Picture
Photography by Carol Benson

Who do you find inspiring?

Paul Walker. When I was in 5th or 6th grade and I was walking through my living room one weekend afternoon and saw my dad watching Fast and Furious 5. The feeling I had watching him in the scene was indescribable; I remember being so entertained and wanting to be able to entertain others the same way. After that moment, I decided to get involved in theater and I have realized my passion for it not only calls me to create something to entertain others, but more importantly to inspire others to pursue the arts, break out of their shell and find their true selves the way theater has done for me. So now when I think about where I am and what I did to get here, I remember how I felt watching him in that movie, so I attribute my inspiration to him.

Felicia Thompson - Dubai
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Charlotte Thompson
Photography by Salamon Photo
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Felicia Thompson is a young, greatly talented and successful actor, singer and model. From the age of 6 years old, she knew she wanted to be an actor when she saw a magical production of ‘Lion King’. She has had lead roles in films, stage productions, been a radio dj, performed live on international TV and modeled for high fashion international brands. Feedback from industry professionals, auditions and friends is always that she is a great team player and leader that includes all cast and takes all her assignments with a reliable and professional act. Her dream is to have a profession life as an actor in the future.

What about the production of the 'Lion King' made you want to be an actress?
The Lion king has always been one of my favorite childhood movies, and when I watched it as a musical, I felt more inspired than ever before and it made me want to get on stage and be part of my own fantasy world. Whenever I watch people perform, I feel welcome and at home. I am very hard working and competitive, performing helps me every day to stay motivated, I stay motivated by improving on different aspects of musical theatre. This keeps me busy and I love seeing how far I can push myself.

What are the workshops you have attended like?
I love attending workshops and master classes, and one of my favorites by far is the Broadway workshop I attended In New York. We worked on a song from Wicked with Actors who were in the musical and they taught us the choreography. This helped me massively because I got to see professionals in the industry work up close. Another type of workshop I think has helped me massively in my career was when I got to do a private master class with Paul Spicer from Arts Ed London. He was part of the Mamma Mia main cast on the West End and did a worldwide tour. He helped me sing notes I didn’t even know I could hit, and the entire class was a big burst of energy, laughter and he was a top-notch world-class performer in action, that inspires me greatly. I am also proud to have been apart a lovely Dance Workshop with the world well renowned Aaron Renfree. It was a technical advanced number, high voltage and coordination for the selected dance team. We also got to perform this choreography in Dubai Opera - an amazing experience and I am ready to do it all again in February.

What was it like performing at Carnegie Hall & why were you performing there?
Performing in Carnegie hall was indescribable, everything you saw, everywhere you looked was like it was straight out of a movie. I was in Carnegie hall to perform at a Christmas concert that was conducted by Erik Whitacre, it took months to prepare and our choir performed next to the best rated choirs in America. The opportunity to get a special invitation to perform with Erik Whitacre made this a Dream come true.

What is your favorite performance you have been a part of?
My favorite role is from the School of Rock musical where I played Patty Di Marco. She is a sassy, challenging and powerful character, and this is the first time I have played an adult role. Being able to develop the confidence together with my director, acting coaches and co actors gave me a big rush. And the audience loved it! I spent a lot of time researching the role, Sarah Silverman played Patty in the movie with Jack Black. She was my role model for taking on a rather daring career move.  The feedbacks and reviews have been so positive, and that is very encouraging. And - I was jumping through the roof when my International commercial for Yas Island played on The Ellen Show in the Christmas Giveaway with Jennifer Aniston, two role models and heroes of mine. I am also very proud of my Sports commercials for Nike, Puma and Calvin Klein. It requires sports skills on a professional level, I am a professional swimmer, that qualified me for the hard work and enduring schedules for the professional shoots. A new area for mes is my newly signed Influencer agreements with Monnalisa, Derhy, Nununuworld, Marlo Kids and - latest House of Juniors. Representing these amazing brands and designers makes me so happy and proud. Last - I am thrilled and humbled by being named Most Beautiful Child Model of 2019 by two American magazines. Working with international celebrity photographers have surely built my portfolio to a high standard and catapulted my career internationally. I am so proud and feel so grateful for this great honor.

What does being a Premiereprogram ambassador entail?
To be a Premiereprogram ambassador means to be a good role model and to inspire new talent in an international mix of actors, singers and models meeting and performing before industry professionals. I have met and worked with celebrities like Raven Symone, Peyton List, Miranda May and Josie Totah, Lauren Taylor and Hayden Byerly. I also got signed to my international management agency through Premiereprogram. Meeting other successful talents at my age is so great, learning their paths and successes really inspires me.
Picture
Photography by Lilly K. Photography
What is the biggest lesson acting and performing has taught you?
Acting and performing has taught me so many useful life skills like memorization skills, public speaking experience, a solid work ethic, being confident and have a great level of adaptability.

Who inspires you in the acting/ performing industry?
My inspiration from the industry is Emma Watson, Millie Bobby Brown and Reese Witherspoon. They have taken on many roles in addition to acting and performing. I think it is so important to use your voice to fight for what you believe in, whether you are young or old, famous or just a great Voice in your local community.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My best advice to everyone who wants to be in the Performing Arts industry is never give up and always try harder. Practice is key to being successful. Every day I work on aspects on Musical Theatre, and I always have a lot of ongoing projects. It is important to go on as many auditions as possible, and to do commercials, shows, films and choir to develop your skills.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I want to study Performing Arts, History and Psychology at University in the USA or England. I want to have a solid academic education to ensure my future career and possibilities.

Picture
Photography by Ophelia Fotografie
What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I like to do Magic Card tricks, that is the most unexpected activity I do for my family and friends.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I could never do my very busy schedule without the support of my parents. My Mommy organizes everything for my career, and we have good help from my agents as well to keep up with audition schedules that often can be set on short notice.

3 Things on your bucket list
Go Skydiving - Go Snorkeling in the Caribbean and maybe... travel out to Space one day

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I am humble and I am a great team leader. I am happy to do tasks without receiving anything in return. I am well professionally trained, and I make sure everyone around me is happy. Always remember you are stronger and braver than you believe, and you also have to learn to handle rejection and still be a good team player. I always develop new goals for myself, and many friends in the industry have said that they find that very inspirational and want to follow me on my path. The competitive side of performing is easier to handle if you train hard to be professional and always improve on your abilities and skills.

Greta Marionneaux - Louisiana
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Beyond Gray Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: At four months old, Greta was diagnosed with a serious heart defect. Surprising her doctors, she had the fight, strength and determination to survive. After 3 open-heart surgeries, a stent and still one final surgery ahead, Greta wears her scar proudly and is unstoppable! She’s a competitive dancer since the age of five, was a cheerleader and competed for two years on her high school gymnastics team.

Greta is truly an inspiring role model to all children with heart defects and a wonderful example of how to live life to the fullest no matter what obstacles you are given!
Picture
Photography by Beyond Gray Photography

How has your heart condition made you stronger?
Even though I have had multiple open-heart surgeries, I never wanted to be limited by my heart condition (Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia). So I have challenged myself to participate in all the physical activities that I am interested in. The doctors have said that the fact that I am so active has helped my heart become stronger and healthier.

What types of activities has your heart condition still allowed you to do?
My heart condition has not limited me from participating in any activities. I love doing all things active, but if I had to choose one, it would be dancing.

Picture

Tell me more about your dance experience, what do you love most about it?

I have been a part of a competitive dance team since the age of 5. I am so grateful for the amazing friends that I have made on my team. The thing I love most about dance is how it has allowed me to push myself further than I thought I ever could and how it constantly challenges me to step out of my comfort zone with all the different styles and choreography.

What has been your favorite dance performance, why?
My favorite dance performance would have to be the production number “The Greatest Show” that my dance studio, Center Stage Performing Arts Academy, did in 2018. I was lucky enough to get to perform this dance at 4 different competitions, 3 different showcases, and 2 other times for fundraisers. We used a medley of songs from the movie, "The Greatest Showman", and were able to portray the full storyline through the number. I loved this performance so much because it was full of crazy costumes, set pieces, make up, and hair. We were able to sing, dance, act, and do all kinds of acrobatics in this number. It was so fun and left the crowd standing on their feet each time we performed it.

Picture
Photography by Beyond Gray Photography

Tell me more about being a cheerleader and gymnast, what is it like doing these sports with your heart condition?

I took tumbling private lessons from 3rd grade to about 8th grade to work on many different flips and skills, and I cheered for my school all throughout middle school. I never had any trouble keeping up and was not limited by my condition while cheering. I was a part of the gymnastics team at my high school for 2 years. I knew how to tumble and dance going into gymnastics, but I had never tried the beam, bars, or vault. I was so excited to learn something new and caught on quickly. I was able to learn these new skills and was not set back because of my heart condition.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I think it is very important to do well in school, so I work hard to maintain good grades while still giving it my all to being the best dancer I can be.

Picture

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think what is inspiring to others about myself is how I have chosen to embrace my heart defect rather than looking at it as a burden. I want to be a role model to younger children born with this condition and show them that no matter what challenges you are given, if you work hard and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you from pursuing your dreams.

Victoria Hall - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Brenda Welke
Photography by Kenneth Siscon Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Victoria Hall has spent the past four years advocating, raising money and awareness for victims of human trafficking by partnering with the nonprofit organization Dresscember. At the age of sixteen she traveled to India with the organization YouCanFreeUs that rescues victims of human trafficking. She went into locations delivering care packages and planting seeds for rescue missions. She also met and worked with survivors in rehabilitation programs. Victoria sees the light and hopes all she meets will see that light and her fight to bring awareness through her passions to this cause.

Picture
Photography by Kenneth Siscon Photography

How did you know you wanted to help and advocate for human trafficking victims?

I have always been the kind of person to stand up when I see injustice but it wasn't until my freshman year of high school when I truly grew a passion for the rights of human trafficking victims. When I connected the resources that I held I knew I had to speak up and make it known.

What different kinds of work have you done for human rights?
For the past four years, I have advocated through a non-profit campaign called Dressember. I wear a dress each day in December raising money to fund all sorts of rescue and rehabilitation needs as well as starting conversations through the dresses. I have also traveled across the world to India on a rehabilitation trip for rescued survivors of human trafficking. But my biggest work is the conversations daily I have with friends, family and through my social media bringing the conversation to light and creating awareness all over.

Tell me more about going to India with YouCanFreeUs. What was this experience like?
India was a trip that forever changed me. This trip with YouCanFreeUs showed me the fruit of the work being done. I was able to see these men and women who have been rescued from human trafficking and are on their way to becoming superheroes in their own life. Alone the conversation had given me more of a fire to help bring awareness and do what I can with my resources to help rescue from this modern-day slavery.

Picture
Photography by Katie Skrepnek

What have you learned from meeting with the survivors of human trafficking?

I have re-learned the lesson that no matter how deep or far gone you think your life may be, there's always a light at the end of that tunnel. You can be in the darkest of situations and there is still a way to get out but not only get out, but there is also a way to achieve your dreams and live the life you have always wanted. You are not defined by where you have been; these men and women may have been victims of trafficking but to me and any other advocate you speak to they are true survivors and an inspiration to us all.

What's the biggest way the average human can help raise awareness and help human trafficking victims?
Conversation. This can be with friends, family, people at school or work, or even online through social media. You would be surprised by the number of people who just don't know and are unaware of these events still occurring today. So my biggest tip to all is just having an open conversation and being aware of the signs and possibilities as this happens everywhere, not just across the world.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have yet to accomplish has to be my academic achievements. I was diagnosed with ADD and Dyslexia at an extremely young age, I was also placed in the Gifted and Talented (GT) program making me twice gifted, this brought upon more struggles than I could ever imagine. I was bullied constantly throughout elementary, middle, and high school by both students and some teachers. This was extremely difficult for me to understand and made me feel worthless. I felt like I would never make it in life. My hopes of graduating from high school felt small and less of having the possibility of achieving a further education. Fast forward to now my senior year, I have spent the last two years pursuing an online education that gave me the resources as well as the time to achieve my dreams and let my talents sore and fly high. I Graduated a semester early January 2020 and will go into college with 24 hours of credits completed. This alone has been a great achievement and will always hold close to my heart but I will forever be proud of the fact that I got into all colleges I applied for and will be attending my dream school of 10 years, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Los Angeles Fall 2020.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Work hard, stay humble, and be true to yourself. It is and will always be a difficult path when standing up for what you believe in but you will ALWAYS find the good in every situation. You will have people who support you and people who will want to bring you down but knowing your truth and the good you have created in the world will mean more than any negative comment you will ever receive.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
So much can happen in five years so it is quite fantastic to even imagine the possibilities. I hope that in five years I will have graduated from college with my master's degree and moved on into some kind of career in the Fashion industry weather it is my own company or working as a costume designer for a Hollywood studio. I know the one thing I can guarantee is my advocacy for human rights and prevention of sex/human trafficking globally will continue and will hopefully grow into a larger platform reaching for awareness than ever.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My heart will always belong to dance, after a severe injury in 2018 and surgery in 2019 my dance career ended early. I will always consider myself a dancer and will always participate in my limitations as it brings me great joy in life.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I love to cook. Growing up with Celiac disease and other food allergies I had to learn how to adapt. My parents have always told me that ever since I was a baby I had an eye for cooking; they could barely get me to watch the classic children's shows but the moment The Cooking Channel or Food Network came on I was hooked. Cooking quickly became my outlet while adjusting to life with food allergies and now it is my favorite hidden talent!

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I heavily rely on my faith to help me when things feel overwhelming. God has been so faithful over the years providing such perfect timing with the special opportunities and events I have been able to advocate for and take part in. I have many special people in my life supporting my unique upbringing that has provided such a flexible lifestyle being able to experience more than the average 17 years old would.

3 Things on your bucket list
Achieve the success of my own Fashion Design brand, a brand that gives back the position of every product sold to organizations I stand for.
Travel as much as I can. I never want to put a limitation on the places I will go or the things I can do so wherever I can get an opportunity to travel to my answer will be YES!
Lastly to be a mom. My dream one day is to have three children of my own and to foster to adopt two or more kiddos. My heart has always been tender for children making sure they know they are loved and welcome in this life and the joys that being a mother to me are far too imported to let fly by.

Who do you find inspiring?
My family has to be the most inspiring person I could think of. While there are so many people out there I could say have inspired me, they have not shaped me the way my family has. My mother is the strongest woman you will ever meet and she will always be by my sister and I’s side in support of our aspirations and goals, yet she never shies away to call us out if we are wrong, which has built so much character in me today. My father is my best friend and will always be. He shows me what it looks like to work hard and stay so humble with success and I will carry that with me forever. Lastly, my sister has no idea how much she has impacted my life and how much I have learned from her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think it is my individuality. I hope and pray when people look at me they see a genuine soul and a girl who is true to herself in every aspect of life. We will never learn anything new by being the same as the person next to you and I hope when people look at me they feel like they can be the truest version of themself and live a life where they aren't afraid of others' criticism.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I would just like to end by saying that nothing is too small or too big to achieve with grit, passion and lots of dedication.

She is a fierce competitor in the United States Equestrian Federation rated horse shows and the Interscholastic Equestrian Association. In USEF, Shaney has been the Professional Horseman's Association Champion in her riding division multiple years in a row. In 2019 she was invited to compete at National Finals with her horse. This year she is chasing points across the country for multiple year end Medal Finals. In the IEA, Shaney rode at the National Finals in 2016 at Lexington, Kentucky. In 2019 she was nominated and received a National Sportsmanship Award which was competed for nationally. Shaney is also in the top 5% of her class and a 2-year member of the National Honor Society! How did you get into horseback riding?

Since I am able to remember, I was on a horse’s back. My father is a retired large animal veterinarian and he specialized mainly in equine reproductive work in the standardbred racehorse industry. My mom grew up riding as a little girl and she still rides today. She was a veterinary technician for my father while he was in practice. Both of my parents surrounded me with the love of horses from an early age. I started competing at the age of 3, and I haven’t been able to put it down since. I will be forever grateful to my parents for raising me in a sport with so many valuable lessons.

Tell me more about what an equestrian competition is like?
I competitively show in equitation and hunter divisions. Both divisions contain a course of jumps that are ridden in a specific order. Equitation is judged strictly on the rider’s position and the ability of the rider to correctly use their aids (cues a rider gives to the horse to communicate what the rider wants the horse to do). Hunter classes are judged on the horse’s ability to move in a smooth and consistent manner throughout the entire course of jumps. At an equestrian competition a rider learns a set course for the class they are competing in. They get the opportunity to warm-up in a practice ring with others before they go in the show ring to make their big appearance. In a division there are normally 3-5 classes depending on the horse show. After a rider completes multiple courses of jumps, they will have a flat phase. A flat phase is where the horse walks, trots, and canters without any jumps.

What has been your favorite performance throughout your riding career, why?
One of my favorite performances recently was in the Dover Medal. It is a two-part class that is comprised of a course with difficult variables and then a test follows (a harder course or a flat phase). The course was moderately challenging, but the week before I worked on a lot of the obstacles that were in the course. After the first part of the course, I was in fourth place. After the test, I accumulated enough points to move up a placement which is a large accomplishment. Out of a competitive field of riders I was able to secure a second place in the Medal. I really enjoyed this class as well because a couple of the riders were friends of mine, and we could bond over the experience. It is always a more memorable experience to share with the people closest to you in your life.

What different awards have you won? which one has meant the most?

I have won various awards throughout my equestrian career. I have been awarded for my riding abilities in both the equestrian and hunter-jumper divisions throughout multiple associations. One of the biggest awards that I have received was not for my riding abilities, but for my actions outside of the ring. I have been recognized two years in a row by the Interscholastic Equestrian Association when I received the National Sportsmanship Award (2019-3rd and 2018-5th place). Personally, that is the most important award that any person could receive, no matter the sport that you participate in. I was nominated for this award by my peers, my coach, and other coaches in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association. Overall, they took into consideration my equine related activities and awards, school related activities, volunteer and leadership activities, and my academic standing. This award had so much meaning to me because I put a lot of work into being a good sportsman to other riders in all situations. When my mom was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, it was very hard for me to give back to the equestrian community. But I realized, simply being a good sport could impact a person’s day and have an impact on a large amount of people.

Who do you look up to/ who inspires you in the equestrian field?
A group of riders that truly inspire me as an equestrian are the special Olympic riders. Watching their performances in all disciplines reminds me of the true bond between horse and rider. No matter the challenge at hand, they persist and put their best foot forward. These riders remind me that every ride we have is a blessing. We are so prone to get frustrated over the little things in life, but these riders show us that we can learn so much from these minute challenges. In our area, Storm Harbor Equestrian Facility has a program for special needs individuals to learn how to ride and compete in local shows. It brings me great joy to watch their progress as riders and how much happiness riding provides them.

Picture

What has riding taught you, and how has it developed you into who you are today?
I have ridden under numerous trainers which has formed me into the rider I am today. Each trainer had a different outlook on riding, and therefore each person provided a new insight on how to tackle individual issues. To this day, I still use some of the fundamental knowledge that my first competitive trainer taught me, Linda Stevens. The following coaches have taught me numerous lessons in the ring and outside the ring: Linda Stevens, Suzie Turner, Rebecca Bloom, Ahna Cafaro, Spencer Turnblacer,, Barbra Bancroft, Sharon Jodun, Heidi D’Angelo, Lauren Prisuta, and Karen Lenehan. These individuals not only provided me with the foundation of my riding knowledge, but also with my horsemanship knowledge and sportsmanship skills. I have been blessed to be surrounded by these talented equestrians not only as trainers, but individuals willing to help me build my character along the way.

Jordan Jones - Missouri
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Judie Jones
Photography by Jeff Yin Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jordan Jones has been dancing since the age of 3 years old. Starting at the age of 10 she has spent her summers at prestigious ballet summer intensives such as Joffrey Chicago, Houston, PNB, Boston, San Francisco Ballet, and the Jordan School of Dance at Butler University. She has grown up balancing a challenging mix of academics, community service, and dance training that has helped her to become the well-rounded person she is today. In August she will attend the University of Arizona to study the triple track major of ballet, jazz, and modern along with preparing for med school. The picture we are submitting from her senior session took place in Chicago and represents the first big city where all her auditions began, and memories she holds close to her heart.
Picture

What or Who inspired you to start dancing?

Due to the research my parents did, they found out dance was the best thing to do for the health issue I was diagnosed with. At age 3, I started creative movement, and I have been in love with dance ever since.

What is your favorite thing about dancing?
Dance allows me to express myself in ways I cannot at school or other places. It has helped me break out of my shell and become more outgoing. I have met the most amazing people through dance, and the dance studio has become my second home.

Picture

Can you tell me more about what it's like going to summer dance intensives?

Since age 12, I have travelled to different cities to train with amazing ballet companies. I've been fortunate to train with Joffrey Ballet, Houston Ballet, Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. I spent 4-6 weeks in each of these cities training for 7+ hours a day. Each time, I stayed in a dorm and met many new friends. On the weekends, I loved exploring the new cities and getting a taste of the different cultures,

What is your favorite dance program that you have been to?
I enjoyed San Francisco Ballet the most because I learned so much and met the best people. It was also my favorite city because we never ran out of things to do.

Picture
Is there a specific performance that has meant the most to you?

The performance that meant the most to me was my last Nutcracker. I was The Sugar Plum Fairy. I loved every minute of that dance and had the most amazing partner. The Nutcracker has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, so performing in it for the last time was very hard. I would do it all over again if I could.

If you could have a career that involves dance what would you want to do?
I would love to be in a ballet company one day because I have grown up around that environment and feel that I would love performing.

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am also a teacher at my dance studio. I wanted to share my passion and love for dance with the younger generations. I push them to reach their full potential and feel that the more they are inspired, the more likely they are to continue. I also spend time volunteering in my community because the stronger the community the better.

Ashton Tims

Ashton Tims - Illinois
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Erica Tims
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: On 10/11/2019, during a game with Central Maroons Football, Ashton Tims’ leg was broken in two places requiring major surgery & hardware. He wasn’t expected to walk for 2 months but worked to be able to walk to receive his honors at his end of year banquet 37 days later. Despite missing 2 months of school he finished the semester with a 2.9/4. He’s still fighting daily to be able to run again so he doesn’t miss his senior track season. He hasn’t dismissed his dreams despite the initial prognosis surprising all with his positive outlook.
Picture
What was going through your mind the moment you found out your injury and the prognosis?
I couldn’t see my leg but knew something was wrong. When they unwrapped my leg, I saw the condition, and lost it. I was inconsolable agonizing over the fact that I only had 2 more games of senior season and college visits starting the next day; why now!? Then to be told I wouldn't walk for at least 2-months or run for another 4-5 months was overwhelming!

Who inspired you throughout the process of overcoming your injury?
My mom kept me going, my spirits up, and the bigger picture clear - that this wasn’t going to be the end of "it" for me. She didn't let me get down or pity myself and never let me focus on what I couldn't do.

Tell me more about the process you have gone through to overcome your injury.
The process has been horrible from the first procedures/surgery and PT until now. I've never felt such pain, discomfort, or fear like these last 4-months. I was an active, independent teenager then dependent for just essentials overnight. It’s been tough and humbling. I don't like being a burden so there were times that I’d try doing things that I shouldn't. I’ve had to learn to ask for help. I also don't like being restricted so I tend to push harder than I’m allowed and end up being lectured. The unknown has been my mental obstacle. 4-months ago I knew what I wanted my trajectory to be for my senior year and college/athletics. Now I’m working to get back on track.

Picture
What was it was like getting to walk up and receive your award at your banquet?
It was 37 days after my accident. The whole evening was a lot. My trainer told me that he’d be at our banquet so if I wanted to walk across the stage without my crutches that he was o.k. with it. I arrived with crutches but decided when we got there that I didn’t want to use them at all. It was my first time walking in front of anyone or seeing many since the accident since I couldn’t attend school because of pain/swelling. I didn't want to fall. Then coach mentioned the accident as he was calling me up and I honestly began to tear up a little. I had come a long way in a short time. It felt incredible!

What are you looking forward to doing most after fully recovering from your injury?
Being able to compete again!!!! I’ve repeatedly said I just want to be normal again- to walk, to run, to jump! I love competing and pushing myself. I want to be unrestricted again and to show what kind of athlete I still am. I still have something to prove....to myself!!!

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing that I have ever accomplished is definitely learning how to walk again....and doing it normally.  I didn't want to walk with a limp and so walking took a great deal of concentrated effort initially.   Once I went back to school, I still had a slight limp but I didn't realize it.  My track coach noticed it one day and so did my mom especially after school.  Our school has 3 floors and a basement.  I had classes on all levels and even though I was supposed to take the elevator and not stairs, I took the stairs.  I didn't want to have to depend on an elevator.  I wanted to be able to do something as simple and normal as walking stairs.  So I did.  It probably wasn't a good idea at first.  I came home daily with a swollen leg and with discomfort but now I do it with ease and I started being able to do it with ease sooner than what was expected due to the severity of my injury.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I don't wish where I am or what I have been through since October on anyone.  This has been a tough road and a tough battle.....but if someone does end up here - No matter what DO NOT GIVE UP because EVERY SINGLE OBSTACLE isn't there to stop you but it is there to make you better and stronger and to show you how far and how hard you can be pushed and can push yourself.
Picture

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I see myself attending and finishing college with my degree in the next 5 years.  I hope to be starting a career as a Physical Therapist/Athletic Trainer.  I feel Physical Therapists/Athletic Trainers aren't given enough credit for what they really do and how much of a difference they make, but I want to be able to do for another person/people what my trainer, Aaron Alford, has done for me.  It's more than just getting me physically right.  He's been a great support system and he has gone above and beyond just our PT sessions twice a week.  Literally from the moment I went down on the field he was by my side and then at the hospital.  He really is the best!  I'm happy that he has been part of my recovery/rehabilitation!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I am a pretty laid back person. I like spending free-time hanging out with friends and family. Relaxing with people I care about is enough for me.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes!  I like to cook!  My mom always says that I won't starve!  I started cooking when was young because I liked to help my mom. I have also taken a few classes offered by my high school and I am even a TA in one of the cooking classes this semester.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
My mother.... sad but true!  Our family has a lot going on all the time.  She keeps a family calendar and has since I was young because I have always been a year-round athlete.  So, she
keeps us all on task.  I only hope some of that rubs off on me when I have to do it on my own.

3 Things on your bucket list
1.) See A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie in concert
2.) Get tickets to a Super Bowl Game
3.) Go watch the Summer Olympics in person

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom, but I have mentioned her a lot already....so currently, with my recent injury and rehab, Derrick Rose is inspiring to me.  He has had a career riddled with injuries and when most people would have given up or retired, he continued to push and persevere on faith.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my strength and constant push through this injury could inspire someone in a similar situation.  I don't know if I am inspiring, but I hope I am.  I hope that someone going through what I have been through can see where I was and where I am and feel hopeful because when I was first injured that's what I was looking for.  I was looking for stories like mine so that I could know what to expect or that I was going to be o.k.  If someone like me could find my story and feel a little better, then that would be nice.

How has your strong faith impacted who you are, and how do you continue to build your faith through your daily life?

My faith has impacted every aspect of my life. Growing up in church, I have always been taught the importance of standing strong in the Lord and sharing my faith with others. I would have never been able to accomplish anything without my faith and God by my side. I am so grateful for my parents and the leaders in my church that have helped me grow as a Christian and helped me become the person I am today. I continue to build my faith by attending church every Sunday and surrounding myself with people who strengthen my love for the Lord. I strive to show others Jesus in daily life and through the activities I am involved in. I feel as if God has given me my talents so that I may use them to further His kingdom.

How have you continued to apply your faith through all that you are involved in?
I continue to apply my faith through all that I am involved in by sharing my faith with those around me and showing my love for the Lord. I believe that God has called me to spread his word by giving me the talents I possess. I strive to show and share my faith by exhibiting the qualities of a Christian. I try to always remember the Word of God and live according to His teachings. My faith is so important to me and I want to let my light shine for the Lord through all that I am involved in. One of the biggest things to me is leading by example and letting my actions speak just as loud as my words. It is so important that I show my faith through my actions and set an example for others of how to live as God sees fit.

As an inspiration to others, how have you set an example on how to live your life through your faith while also putting in full effort to all that you are involved in?
I have set an example of how to live my life by following the guidelines and rules God has outlined for every one of us. I firmly believe that God has a plan for me and that everything happens for a reason on His timing. I put all of my trust in the Lord and know that he walks by my side every day, through every situation. Whenever I am struggling or feel stressed or anxious, I pray and ask God for guidance and reassurance that He has everything under control. My faith helps me put full effort into all that I am involved in and the Lord gives me the strength to always give my all in every circumstance. Sometimes it can be tiring and tough to be involved in so many things, but I always have God on my side helping me be the best person, teammate, club member, and leader I can be.

What do you love most about cheerleading, and what has been your favorite memory being co-captain of your varsity squad?
My favorite part of cheerleading is showing my school spirit and representing my school and community. Being a cheerleader means always staying positive and cheering on my fellow classmates during athletic events. It is such a good feeling to perform in front of the whole community during a football game or stunt for the starting lineup during basketball season. I love creating memories that will last a lifetime, and many of these come from cheerleading. I will never forget my time cheering on my team on both the field and the court. I am so proud to be seen as a role model for the younger girls on my squad and the little girls that watch the games that I cheer for.

What do you enjoy most about being so actively involved in so many different leadership positions and extracurriculars?
I enjoy being a leader in my school and community because of the unique experiences and memories I get to create. Being a yearbook editor and cheerleading captain has allowed me to do things that many people have not had the chance to do. I am very grateful for these opportunities and experiences I have been granted. I love staying busy with all of my extracurriculars and being a part of my high school.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was being in the cast of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Yuletide Celebration. Yuletide Celebration is a professional, large-scale Christmas production. From first grade to freshman year, my family and I performed roughly eight to nine shows a week during the entire holiday season while also still going to school full time and participating in extracurricular activities. It was a very demanding and exhausting process, but an experience I will remember and cherish for my entire life. I was able to perform with many famous and talented people along with the incomparable Maestro Everly and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would advise someone to always do your best and be the hardest worker in the room. I would also tell them to remember who you are and stay true to your beliefs and values.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I plan to be a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Advertising. I hope to have a job in PR and a lifelong career doing what I love. For the future beyond that, I hope to be married raising my family with strong Christian values in a financially stable household.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

My favorite activity is spending time with my twin sister. We do everything together and I am almost always with her. She is my best friend and I do not know what I would do without her. We both enjoy spending time with our friends and doing the things we love with them.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is my ability to play the cello. I was in orchestra for five years, all through middle school and the beginning of high school.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized by staying on top of things and not procrastinating. I try to always get ahead, so I do not fall behind.

3 Things on your bucket list
One thing on my bucket list is to study abroad in college. I also want to work for Disney World and travel to all of the Disney locations around the world. Lastly, I would like to live on the beach and learn how to surf.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find veterans and soldiers who have fought and are currently fighting for our freedom inspiring. I believe that these men and women are the bravest people in our society and sacrifice so much so that we can live in a safe country with freedoms that many people around the world unfortunately do not have.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope that I am inspiring because of the kindness and compassion I show toward others. I always try to stay positive and upbeat and encouraging to my peers.

Azurra Bukhari - Ontario
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Natasha Bukhari
Photography by Aleksandra Salamon
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Azurra is a young model, actress & aspiring singer from Toronto, Canada currently living in Dubai! She has starred in season 1 of the series “Go Iguanas” and has done commercials for
Warner Bros, Glad, Yas Waterworld, IMG, Nutella, Jelly Belly, Goody Pasta, STV, including fashion
shoots for makeup artists and photographers in London, Toronto and Dubai! She is also known for
singing covers on @tiktok!

What is it like living in Dubai?

It’s such an enriching experience living in Dubai. There are approximately 10 million people of which
approximately 8 million are expats. What this means, is that daily we are exposed to so many different nationalities and cultures, including that of local Emiratis who are native to the country. The weather is also fantastic, except for summer where it can get extremely hot, but that’s a great time of year to travel back to North America! Having said that, there are also tons of indoor activities, such as skiing, ice skating, trampoline parks, skate parks, indoor amusement parks, to keep us busy!

Tell us about your experiences with acting.
I have always enjoyed acting, and some might say I am very dramatic at times, lol. I acted in season 1
of Go Iguanas, an online tv show, and in a variety of commercials and social media shoots. Some of
these include Glad, Nutella, Warner Brothers, Jelly Belly, Goody Pasta, Fly Dubai, Mall of the
Emirates, IMG Amusement Park and Yas Waterpark. Shoot days are intense, with early morning
starts for hair, makeup, lines, and redoing scenes until just right, but when you see the finished
products its always worth it!

What has been your favorite commercial to be in and why?
I absolutely loved shooting the Goody pasta commercial. It was so creative and magical. It was
centered around a family eating pasta at the dinner table whose love for the pasta sent them into a
dreamland. In my scene, I was transported to a luxurious magical fairy land, wearing a gown of tulle
and shimmer. The set was out of this world, with over 200 mini trees and plants to make it look like I
was genuinely in a lush green forest. I felt like a princess, and it helped that I loved the pasta!

What was it like starring in a tv show?
It was an amazing experience and I made friendships that will last a lifetime. It helped me develop my confidence and get a sense of how much is entailed in shooting a series. When we watch tv, it looks so simple but the amount of people involved in each scene is phenomenal. I would say the
experience made me realize that when you love what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter how exhausting it is, because it doesn’t feel like work!

What are some singing techniques you use?
I try to practice warmups at least 3 times a week, practice my breathing, core muscles and drink lots
of water. I also do my Trinity exams annually to give me a goal of what to work towards. This year I
am doing grade 5.

What kind of songs do you cover when you post them on tik tok?
To be honest, I post songs that I’m currently listening to, really like, or just in the mood for on that day! Lately, people have been requesting songs so I’m also trying to work on that.
Picture

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I am currently participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze programme. This requires me to
complete four sections comprised of a volunteering section, physical section, skills section and an
expedition section, which for me is the most challenging. Within our group of 6, we need to plan, train and complete an unaccompanied expedition. There are 20 conditions that we need to meet that include, planning an appropriate menu of cooked food, having no access to a mobile phone, being properly equipped with our utensils, tents and sleeping supplies for a minimum of 2 days and 1 night with minimal adult intervention. We have just completed the practice expedition with the final one in a few weeks and while I survived, there were a lot of things we will do differently next time. I’ll let you know how I get on!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Believe in yourself, and even when people tell you it’s cringey or try to dissuade you from pursuing
your dreams, if it brings you happiness don’t give up. People spend a lifetime searching for
contentment so if you’ve found it, you’re ahead of the game. But also, be kind to people, whether on
set, at school, in every aspect of your life, because this quality people will remember.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I will continue to act and sing and try to grow my following whilst focusing on school. I hope to
complete my IB diploma and then explore universities where I can pursue my dream!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to play netball, spend time with my sister, and travel. Last year, I went to Nepal with my school, where we did a bit of community service. It was an inspiring and humbling experience that I’ll never forget.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I took ballet for 9 years and gymnastics for 8 so I can walk enpointe and do the splits!

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I have an app to help me get organized, as well as help from my parents, my grandmother, and
teachers at my school who are very supportive. It comes with a lot of backing from loved ones, who I am always grateful to.

3 Things on your bucket list
 To speak another language fluently
 To travel to an exotic location with my best friends when we turn 18
 To sing in front of a big audience at an arena or festival

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents inspiring because despite differences in career, they are both hardworking and
successful individuals who spend a lot of time with my sister and me. They instill solid values and keep communication open, while doing things for us with a smile. They are also supportive towards me pursuing my dreams!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
It’s hard to think of myself as someone who inspires others, but my hope would be that I inspire them to believe in themselves, to follow their dreams and to be grateful for every opportunity that comes their way.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
This is truly an honour to be recognized by your magazine. Thank you. If people wish, they can follow

Julie Keller - Pennsylvania

Nomination by Jamie Keller
Photography by Thomas Kay Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Julie Keller has been dancing since she was 4 & the last 5 years she joined a traveling team & a competition team, she spends 5 days a week at the studio, she takes ballet, jazz, tap, modern, musical theatre, gymnastics, contemporary & hip hop. When she’s not in class or practicing she loves to help in her younger teammates’ classes & you can see how much they adore her & look up to her. Julie is so driven & determined to become a better dancer & has the desire to learn that over this past summer she asked advice & researched & did exercises to strengthen her ankles & then taught herself how to dance on pointe.

What do you love most about dancing, and how has your passion for dance impacted your life since you were little?

What I love about dance the most is being able to express myself. Dancing has given me an outlet to deal with my emotions. No matter what I feel, dance is always there for me to get me through my day. My passion for dance has grown more and more every day from the very first time I stepped onto the dance floor. With every new step I become more inspired, passionate, and disciplined. DANCE IS MY LIFE and will always be a part of me.

Tell me about the competition and traveling teams you are involved in and how both teams have felt like a second family to you.

I first began taking lessons at Sharon Plessl School of Dance for fun, but I wanted something more and my instructors saw that spark in me as well. I audition for their competition team and Excel Dance Company, a non-profit traveling dance company which Sharon Plessl Pongracz also directs. Not only could I be pushed harder to reach my potential through the competitive teams, but Excel was a great opportunity to be able to travel and perform for the world! They have already performed in Australia, England and Italy. I have had the pleasure of preforming with them locally at Musikfest, July 4th Fireworks, Windcreek Outlets and Casino Resort and Monsters of Hip Hop. My family is exactly what my fellow dancers, teachers and staff at the studio are! With many rehearsals, competitions and performances, we are always working together on something new and spending a lot of time with one another day in and day out. Being a part of both teams does take a lot of time out of my day and of course that also means giving up a lot outside of dance, but to me that doesn’t matter because I much rather be around MY FRIENDS, MY FAMILY, MY HEART!

What type of dance do you enjoy performing most and what has been your most memorable experience dancing so far?

I currently study jazz, tap, gymnastics, musical theatre, modern, ballet, contemporary, hip hop and have recently began studying pointe. I can say without a doubt, Hip Hop is my absolute favorite! It is fast, fun, explosive, and exciting and it matches my personality spot on. My most memorable experience so far would be performing my very first Hip Hop solo. It was not only the excitement of hitting the stage by myself, but watching the crowd’s expressions and I, all alone, was able to pump up the energy of the entire room.

How have you managed to dedicate your time to helping your younger teammates’ classes and how have you become a role model to them?

I absolutely love helping out with my younger teammates. I didn’t see myself as a role model at first, but after the parents of the younger students would thank me for being there for their children whether they needed help with a new step or just putting a smile on their face. That’s when I knew they were looking up to me. They inspire me to be the best I can be.

How has your passion for dance become a way of life for you and a source to express yourself through any trials you have gone through in your life?

I am thirteen, but I am smaller than most kids my age and it’s hard sometimes because I feel like people underestimate me. I am not society’s version of perfect. I am skinny, short and my teeth are crooked. I have been teased and bullied and it hurts. I have learned how to ignore the ones that look down on me and put all my frustration with them into my dance. I push myself through the pain. I have dance in my veins, in my soul, and most importantly in my heart and my love of dance empowers me to conquer all of my demons.

As a role model to many, how has your dedication and encouragement inspired others to be themselves and achieve their goals?

As a role model and someone that has been bullied in the past, I hope that others who may be feeling the same as I have can look at me and see they can overcome their fears and giving up is not an option! I have recently been chosen to be a Thomas Kay Photography Ambassador and in this new journey I hope I can inspire more kids to just be themselves and as long as you are true to yourself, no one else can ever hold you back. And in the end, never let someone else stop you from your dreams and you will always come out on top!

Jacqueline Hennecke - Florida
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Christa Joyner Moody Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jacqueline Hennecke is one of two girls playing boys varsity hockey at her school, is an accomplished artist, an NHS member and co-founder of the school club GOALS (Girls Outdoors Adventure and Leadership) currently the largest club on campus with over 150 members in a high school of 635. Under the GOALS umbrella she also formed Girls Outside. Girls Outside strives to mentor underserved middle school girls by giving them "a safe and inspiring environment that encourages leadership and communication while learning outdoor skills". Girls Outside was approved as a 501(c)(3)! Just a few highlights from this amazing HS senior.

What is the main focus of the GOALS program?
The school club GOALS (Girls Outdoors Adventure and Leadership) is a broad group supporting numerous girl-focused causes, including Berkeley Academy and Girl UP. Within the club, we promote civil discourse on issues affecting intersectional feminism and gender equality.

What inspired you to cofound Girls Outside?
In tenth grade, my team and I wanted to start a club for my school that would support underprivileged middle school girls in the Tampa Bay area. Sixth grade is a pivotal year, when the “anything is possible” dreams of youth collide with an emerging adult reality, and that this effect is heightened in communities where schools and families are underserved. From my camp in Canada, which serves many underprivileged girls, I had seen the confidence girls gain from learning outdoor skills. When combined strong mentorship from older girls, the effect can be life changing. Girls Outside aims to provide middle school girls with skills and tools necessary to become advocates for their community.

What are your plans for the future of Girls Outside?

The future of our organization is very bright – Hopefully, we will grow chapters that run across a larger region in Florida. By instituting training programs for high school girls to run Girls Outside in their local middle schools, we hope to bring the opportunity to more challenged communities. Additionally, we’ll institute initiatives to involve past participants beyond middle school, who will come back as “Junior Leaders” with special training.

How did you get into art and what is your favorite art piece you have designed?
I’ve been taking art classes in my extracurriculars since I was eight years old. Until a year ago, I had been working with acrylic paint and digital media. For an extra challenge, I took a class this year in 3D design. My concentration has been in using natural materials to spark a discussion in dependency on nature. My biggest piece so far has been a throne made with a wooden base and interwoven vines and leaves, which received a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition.

Lastly, What inspired you to start playing ice hockey?

For 12 years I was a competitive figure skater, completely absorbed by the thrill of jumps and the feeling of metal against ice. Being a hockey fan, I was already familiar with a lot of rules and techniques of ice hockey. The coach of the school team had been encouraging me for years to try hockey. Realizing I wasn’t going for the Olympics, I figured I could afford to take a season to try it. Since there was no girls team, I joined the Varsity Boys Ice Hockey team. Though it took some adjusting, I have never regretted the decision. At the end of the season I was in a defensive pairing.

The Nomination: Jonah is an outstanding young man who demonstrates excellent leadership capabilities in his personal and scholastic lives and throughout service activities in his community. Jonah serves as the drumline captain in his school band, plays drums in his church praise band, and serves in the Boy Scouts while maintaining a 3.9 GPA in school. Jonah also belongs to the Beta Club and National Honor Society. He serves the community through work at the local mission and assisting teachers as well as students at the elementary school. What inspired you to start playing music and how long have you been playing?

When I was around eight years old, my dad began playing drum set for our church on Sunday mornings. My best friend and I at the time would sit in the pew closest to the drum set and watch him play. We would mimic the way he played. Eventually, dad caught on to what we were doing and decided to get me a drum set. Of course, it was an electric drum set so my parents wouldn’t have to hear me play constantly. But once I started playing, my interest in music started to grow and continues to grow as I moved on into the future.

What is your favorite thing about getting to share your music with others? Why?
I get to share the love of music in so many ways. Through marching band, concert band, & various honor bands I can play a variety of percussion instruments as well as compose. I am also blessed to be able to play drum set for our church youth group praise band which is probably my favorite part of sharing. I love being able to use the talents God blessed me with to lead worship.

How long have you been in the Boy Scouts and what do you like about it?

I started Cub Scouts as a first grader and crossed over into Boy Scouts at the end of fifth grade. It has been a major part of my life for almost 12 years. My favorite part of being a boy scout has been exploring the outdoors. Throughout the years my love of nature has grown as I have had the privilege of experiencing many outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and spelunking. Spending time outdoors and exploring is so much more entertaining to me than sitting behind a screen.

Tell a little bit more about working at your local mission, what does that entail?

Spending time serving at the Mission of Hope has been such a blessing. Most of the time I’ve volunteered there has been assisting with food give away by loading groceries for the clients. The service opportunity I look forward to each year is Christmas at the Mission. The mission provides Christmas for many local, low-income families. As a student volunteer, I have the privilege of walking a young child through to pick out a new jacket, new shoes, and toys while their parents are hearing the word of God and singing Christmas carols. It is such a joy to see their faces light up as they pick out their special items.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I have big plans for the future. I am going to college to major in electrical engineering and minor in music technology. While in college I plan to be in the marching band and during the summer march Drum Corps International. I hope to graduate from college with a master’s degree in electrical engineering. After that, I just really want to get a solid job and settle down before building a family.

2 things on your bucket list.
1. I really want to tour the United States. I mean travel to every state in one long trip. And I have had an idea of collecting a pair of shoes from every state. This may never happen but if it does, I will be able to check it off my bucket list.
2. It is a dream of mine to march Drums Corps International. I plan to march for four or five summers. My ultimate goal though is to march with Carolina Crown, my absolute favorite drum corps.

Lia Catallo - Michigan
Interview by Claire Path
Nomination and Photography by pArt of Life Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Lia K Catallo is a singer-songwriter who gives of herself constantly, through her music, whether singing for a fundraiser or on the worship team at church. Lia is very passionate about social justice. On one of her mission trips to Haiti her church group was detained due to political unrest. The story made national news yet, despite her fear as they were surrounded by gunfire, etc, she finally made it home and said she would return tomorrow because she loved the people so much. She has a heart for helping to make the world a better place.
Picture
Photography by pArt of Life Photography
What influenced your passion to become a singer-songwriter, and what do you love most about it?
Growing up, I was immersed in music as my mom and dad are musicians. My mom, Jennifer Kincer, strongly influenced my passion. She has been my Vocal Coach & Manager for years. Songwriting is my favorite because writing songs is a way to express my feelings, connect with others and make an impact, potentially helping someone else get through their struggles as well.

How has your gift of music brought people together, and what do you think is one of your most meaningful songs you have written so far?
I think my gift of music brings people together by expressing real emotions about relatable topics. My voice studio often puts together charity events that we sing at, bringing about awareness of a topic or pure enjoyment for those attending.

I think one of the most meaningful songs I have written was about my mom, who is currently battling breast cancer. I poured my heart into it, wanting to express to her how much I care for and love her. I also love the song ‘Home,’ which I wrote on the Haiti Mission Trip, about finding my “home” in God. I always hope that there other people who can relate to my songs, potentially helping them as well.

Picture
Photography by Live Nation Subject: Lia was chosen to perform at the Rock N Roll hall of Fame in Cleveland, performing original songs.
What inspiring messages do your original songs stand for, and how do some of them relate to what teens go through?
All lot of my songs portray message about not being alone or searching for ‘who God is’ and finding Him. I feel like my songs are genuine and connecting. I want teenagers to know they aren’t dealing with things alone, because a lot of us go through the same things. I pray even one of my song connects with a person who might be struggling with that very song topic and helps them to get through it.

How have you inspired others by being there for them through tough times they may go through in their lives, and what advice would you continue to give to them?
I try to lead by example. God put me in a position of leadership on my worship team, I’m my vocal studio at fundraisers and charities and I get to lead worship at my school as well. I can only hope that someone may be impacted and inspired by something I’m singing, opening a door for a conversation and potentially, help.

Photo by Joy Sprang Subject: mission trip Nicaragua
Tell me a little bit about the mission trips you have been involved in and one of your most unforgettable moments you have experienced while being surrounded by different cultures.

Two years ago I went to Haiti on a Mission Trip and despite being detained there due to political unrest, involving gunfire, fires, etc., I would go back in a heartbeat. I loved being able to spread God’s love to the Haitian people. I just returned from a Mission Trip in Nicaragua, which I think may have been the best week of my life. It’s such a beautiful country and the people there are so grateful and loving, despite many living in dumps, literally. I led a group of kids, whom I fell in love with while I was there, and it was amazing. They are filled with pure joy and love.

The Nomination: Reannyn has traveled around the world competing in her sport luge. She just recently participated in the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland representing the USA on January 18, 2020, and was selected as the American flag bearer during the opening ceremony!!! What an honor! She made history last season by being part of the USA's first women's doubles team to compete internationally in a sanctioned women's event. She won 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal on the Youth Cup circuit for women's doubles luge and is currently ranked 6th in the world on Youth A circuit for women's doubles luge.

Reannyn is a senior this year and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is also a member of both indoor and outdoor track and holds the school record for 2 events. Reannyn currently holds the record for the 55 meter dash at 8.05 seconds for indoor track and for the 4x100 meter relay for outdoor track at 51.91 seconds.

In addition, Reannyn volunteers assisting elementary students at track meets and fun days, plus she volunteers at luge slider searches.

How/When were you introduced to luge and who is your athletic inspiration?
I was first introduced to the sport of luge while watching the 2014 Winter Olympics. I remember seeing Erin Hamlin win the bronze medal. It was so exciting! I remember how my local area was so supportive of Erin and there was a lot of local news coverage. In the summer following the 2014 Olympics I had the opportunity to participate in a local slider search in Utica, NY. I had a lot of fun sliding down the hill on a wheeled sled and that was the first time I met Erin Hamlin. She was extremely nice and signed a T-shirt for me, which I still have. Since then Erin has been an inspiration to me.

Luge has given you the opportunity to travel, represent your country, and make history. What have been your favorite memories?
I think that my most favorite experience while training and traveling with USA Luge would be carrying the Flag for the United States in the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games this past January in St. Moritz, Switzerland. It was a great honor to represent my country that way. I was truly honored to have been chosen by my fellow athletes to represent our country. Just to have had the opportunity to slide for my country in the Youth Olympic Games was awesome and am truly thankful for all of the support of my family, friends, my school and my community.

Picture
Photography by Eve Taverne Photography
Describe your experience at the Youth Olympic Games.
My experience at the Youth Olympic Games was amazing! I was able to meet many athletes from other countries and made lifelong friends. I will never forget walking out with my teammates at the opening ceremony. We all had a lot of fun experiences like ice skating, trying out curling for the first time and just hanging out, talking, and playing card games. We even were given pins to trade with the other athletes.

You’re an amazing athlete! How much time do you spend training and how do you balance it with your other activities?
The official training and racing season for luge runs from October through March. We typically slide 1-2, two hour sessions per day on the luge track. We also find time to get in a workout session daily. We also train in the summer. I have to be disciplined to get my schoolwork done while I am away training. My teachers have all been very supportive and we communicate through email when I am away. As the luge season ends the spring sport season at school starts, therefore I am able to compete in outdoor track and field! I also enjoy weight lifting while I am home.
Picture
Photography by Fred Zimny
How do you use your talents to help those in your community?
When I am home during the summer I help with local slider searches to help kids learn about the sport of luge. I also enjoy track and field and enjoy helping out at elementary school track and field events. I really enjoy seeing the younger kids compete and offer my assistance whenever possible.

What are your plans for the future?
My future plans include continuing to train and race with USA Luge while attending Full Sail University’s online Digital Cinematography program. It is also my goal to compete in women’s doubles luge in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Hunter Beaton - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Photography by Paula Beaton
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Hunter Beaton has fundraised and shipped over 30,000 highest quality duffel bags and backpacks to foster youth/aged out foster youth across 15 states in 3 years - all for free! He does not stop there...each major holiday he also throws a Thanksgiving meal, part of NASDAQ closing bell with OneSimpleWish, 2000 backpack drive for college age foster youth, Christmas gift cards, Valentines Cards for foster youth shelters and other items for supplying bags. He is on the Dean's List at UT Austin and continues to amaze so many with his constant attention to foster care needs. He has numerous awards but to top it off, he is a very humble, fun, caring young man.
Picture
Tell me about your passion for donating to foster youth and how it has impacted your life.
If you have ever seen a child with all their worldly treasures in a trash bag being moved to a new home from a neglectful or abusive home, you have your eyes wide opened. I saw this not once but 3 times as a young child with my now adopted siblings. My youngest sister, Holly, had nothing at all and just in a diaper and a faded baby blanket. While my parents were focused on the health of the children, one by one as they come into our home, for some reason I focused on what they were bringing into the home and how they looked. Our story is not the only one like this out there. It is everywhere and some so much worse than I can even imagine.
When I decided to do my Eagle Scout project, it was a simple idea that I knew could make a positive impact to foster youth so they would not have to carry a trash bag. I fulfilled and achieved the Eagle Scout rank and gladly wanted to just go on being a high school freshman, play tennis, hang out with friends and get into a good college. I thought, 100 bags should be enough, right? No. I decided to sustain the project because something in my heart kept telling me that after a month, the original 100 bags were down to 88. I knew if I did not do something to sustain it, trash bags would be used again. That is where I decided to start small and keep going. It has not been an easy path at all. However, to know that the simple gift of a bag or backpack to youth makes a difference to their sense of dignity, it is so worth the energy and hurdles.

What inspired you to make a difference, and what have you donated since then that has helped spark your passion?
As mentioned before, you need to see the situation these children, to no fault of their own, have been dealt. It is so tragic. The statistics are staggering on how many children enter foster care and the older you are, the chance of you being adopted to a forever family is so much smaller. They feel unwanted. My inspiration is not one experience, it stems from many... over 30,000 bags across the United States. That inspires me.
To continue to spark my passion, I entered college last fall. I realized the expenses of filling up my dorm room with the basics since I wanted to pay for it and not burden my parents. My expense was around $800. I immediately thought if a foster youth is lucky enough to get into college, how in the world could they furnish their basics in a dorm. I decided one thing I could do is give them a backpack and get that off their list of things to buy.
I did some major fundraising and shipped over 2,000 backpacks across all community colleges and public universities to former foster youth actively enrolled in their school. I have pictures that show the joy these youth have when they received something so simple - a backpack! I also made sure that 80 students would have a Thanksgiving meal since they may not have any family to spend this time with over the holiday.
Next, I funded 50 - $25 gift cards for Christmas presents for former foster youth and currently for Valentine’s Day, I got my 8 year old sister to rally not only her classmates but the entire school district (9,500 students) to flood foster youth and former foster youth with Valentine’s Day cards - on a day of LOVE for them to feel LOVED! As I continue to give back to foster youth thousands of duffels and backpacks, I love finding creative ways to make them feel special and loved.

Picture
Can you tell me about the success behind your organization, and what you have been able to accomplish that has already made a lasting impact on the lives of so many?
The success behind my organization is people believe in the mission. One Simple Wish also believes in my mission. They are the parent non-profit that continues to push and share the news on how to grant wishes to foster youth and provide the necessity of a bag or backpack. Last year, I was featured on Good Morning America and ABC News for May-Foster Care Awareness Month and saw one of the comments of an older female that still carried around her old orange torn duffel. I reached out to her and asked her if I could send her a replacement. She said yes. I decided to get it monogrammed and sent it. Little did I know that this one gesture and personalization made her feel so special even as an adult. She had always felt like trash, unwanted, and to have someone go out of their way based on one comment on a post, blew her away. Now, she is one of my favorite people because I got to know her, where she lives, what she does and so on. That is an example of lasting impact in my opinion. The bag does not fix the pain by no means, but it may provide youth and former foster youth a path to healing and to know someone cares about them. They matter!

How has your perseverance, work ethic, and determination inspired the lives of many, and how have you dedicated your time to filling the needs of others?
I am so extremely busy with school, being a part of a big family, and being very active in my University Catholic Center role, but I am always seeking ways to continue to help others. May it be a student peer, a family member, a former foster youth or anyone. It feels good to make someone feel better. I work at Austin Threads which provides new clothing, shoes and toiletries to foster youth. Many of these youth have NEVER owned anything new. It is amazing to observe and help these children that are referred to go on a shopping spree and see their eyes light up with their new clothes, shoes, backpack and toiletries.

Picture
How has your family’s support impacted your drive?
My family keeps me grounded, in line to stay on task, understand how to be more efficient and not overextend myself. When I am too busy, my mom or dad may help me get my siblings to help. Now that I live around 100 miles away from them, they may have to help me with getting the local bags delivered so I won’t have to fundraise for shipping costs. That is a huge relief and I want to always use my financial donations wisely if I can.

What encouragement would you give to other teens, and how would you help inspire them to make a difference in the world like what you are doing for those in foster care?
Find a passion, research it, and find what you can do to help and inspire others to help you that have that same interest. When you engage others and collaborate, you can truly make huge differences in people’s lives. I make sure I get to know foster youth by name. When I was in San Antonio, I would shake their hands, talk to them, find out their name. It’s important to make people feel they matter.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing is finding a way to fundraise and give out the bags for free! I do not enjoy asking for donations. But knowing who benefits, makes it all better. I do not make any money since 100% of the donation goes to the purchase of the bag and shipments.
Picture
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Stay focused on your goals, stay true to your mission, keep your priorities straight, don’t get so busy that you do not notice the needs of others and daily prayer.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I am not sure just yet what I will be doing. My major is Communications and Leadership. I am considering a double major in History as well. I want to study abroad as well. I do know that I want to have a career where I can continue to inspire, help and engage others in a positive way.
What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Playing tennis and Ultimate Frisbee. I love the outdoors!

Do you have a hidden talent?
I am not sure about a talent, but I am 6’3 so able to get things off of high places when others may not be able to reach them! Also, I can make unique sounds of water droplets in my mouth. :)

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Daily planner, referencing it often, prioritizing what must be done and when, asking for help, when I cannot get it done.

3 Things on your bucket list
1.) Travel to all continents.
2.) Road trip across the United States.
3.) Learn to play the piano

Who do you find inspiring?
Normal people who do extraordinary things, especially the ones who have overcome odds.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Thank you for publishing these stories. I like that so many people that are my age find passions and have shared their stories.

Hailey Witkowski - Colorado
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Kara Mullane Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Hailey was born with a condition called bilateral delta phalanges which means she has an extra joint in each thumb. This has never stopped her from being a fantastic artist and when she wanted to play the violin in middle school her mom said "Go for it!" . She plays wonderfully and is a natural. Her music has always been as uplifting as her vibrant and caring personality. Because Hailey cares so much for people and how they feel, she has declared her desire to study Psychology and Literature so that she may help people and write books to inspire others.

Tell us a little bit about the condition you were born with and how you stayed positive.
The condition I was born with is called Bilateral delta phalanges, a form of Syndactyly. It affected my hands' general structure and I am unable to bend the second joint in my thumb. I’ve stayed positive by embracing my differences from others, and that I can do just as much as anyone else even though I may be different.

When it comes to music, what genre is your favorite and why?
My favorite type of music is between classical and alt/rock pop. I enjoy these types of music because they both are very structured in the way that each note is put together and can blend very easily with other instruments while still being able to identify and follow each instrument and their notes. Alt/rock pop adds another element to this structure because the lyrics are very carefully crafted to tell a story as well as go along with the structure of the notes.

What are some of your goals?
Some of my goals are to go to college and to get into a career that I love and that makes me happy. I am currently looking into double majoring in college with Psychology and English Literature, because I have a passion for both understanding people and writing to inspire others. I hope to one day be able to write my own books and have them published to inspire others to pursue their own dreams.

What kind of books would you be interested in writing?
I would be interested in writing novels in fantasy and action/adventure, a story which allows me to create a whole world with characters that are relatable with their own imperfections and struggles that they would have to face and overcome. When I was younger, and I read stories with characters that had to face hardships and challenges, and they didn’t give up, it inspired me and helped me believe in myself. I also want to be able to create powerful books, which can make others imagine or feel what the character is going through, and show others how powerful writing and words can truly be.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Over the summer I had the amazing opportunity of being able to intern at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science as a Teen Science Scholar. I worked behind the scenes in the Education Collections department, which is the department where they use all their materials to educate the public about ancient cultures, animals, and history. Working with people from so many different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences was an unforgettable opportunity that I will forever cherish, as well as the opportunity to learn so much more about everything they used.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized with everything I have on my plate by spacing out and planning what is due sooner, and how important it is at the moment. I have often kept all my work in order to be completed in time by scheduling out time to work, but when I fail to keep up with my schedule I suffer from anxiety. I have struggled with anxiety in recent years, and at points it had become overwhelming and I was unable to focus or perform my best at anything that I had to do. This made me realize that I had to step back and just take it one step at a time to allow myself to be able to complete everything that I needed to in an orderly and proficient manner.

Maddox Kennerson - California
Interview by Olivia Bush
Photography by Shanna Kreza Photography (above)
and Laura Kennerson (below)
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Maddox Kennerson @rockstarmadman is inspiring because he is ok with being himself and being different. He always has been the kind of kid who beat to his own drum. He is serious about his music and is humble and kind.
Picture
At what age did you start playing guitar and why did you start playing?
I started playing guitar as a toddler in my dad's lap if you count that! I would sit in his lap and reach over the guitar and just play noise. I was always drawn to music and the guitar. I learned how to play songs at the age of 5 with my dad and then started formal lessons at around 7 years old.

Who or what inspired you to start playing guitar?
My Dad. My dad played guitar at home just for fun. It is a hobby of his. I have always looked up to my Dad. He's a great role model. He is patient and kind and I think there is nothing he doesn't know or can't do.
My guitar teacher Ray Kidd (when I was 8) is another person who inspires me. He believed in me when no one else (other than my parents) did. He made me feel good about who I am and how different I was.
And a famous musician that I find inspiring is Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue. He doesn't care what anyone else thinks. He does his own thing! If someone tells him NO... he will do it just to prove them wrong! I find that he has helped me to strive to feel the same way!

What genre of music do you like to play the most? why?
I love to play Rock or Metal Music because it's what I love to listen to! I have just started to branch out to other genres and I love to add a little rock vibe to pop songs or songs that don't have any guitar in them at all!

Picture
What do you like most about playing your music?
Music is an escape. It brings back memories, and it takes you places. Being on stage performing my music is my happy place because it feels amazing! Music is a way to express yourself when you can't find any other way to express yourself.

If you were to pursue a career in music what specifically would you like to do?
I want to be a performing musician. My mom used to ask me this question every year on the first day of school and on the last day of school. My answer has NEVER changed. (well maybe a tiny bit...) I used to say a Rockstar and now I just say a Musician. Why? Because Music is my passion, and everyone always says to find your passion and make it your job. If you love what you do it won't feel like work at all.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I think I have accomplished is not letting the haters get to me and not allowing myself to get caught up in the negativity.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
BE YOURSELF! The world has too many copycats and too many people trying to be other people. Just be YOU! and of course PRACTICE! If you can't do it now.... you will be able to soon!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I will be a senior in High School! I do plan to go to college too. I see myself doing more of what I love and performing with my band at least 2 times a month! I would LOVE to get paid to do what I love, so hopefully I am getting paid to perform then!

Picture
What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to ride my mountain bike around my home with friends and my dirt bike with my Dad in the desert. I also love to build and experiment with making things.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I'm double-jointed? Does that count?
Ok, I have one for you. I am full of information about cars! I can tell you the year of a car by its physical features. I am obsessed with cars and technology!

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
My mother is an organization queen! She makes lists and breaks everything down for me so that it doesn't get overwhelming. I also set reminders on my phone a lot!

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Buy a Tesla
2. Go to the Carribean
3. Headline a sold-out show

Who do you find inspiring?
The people I constantly feel inspired by are:
Nikki Sixx (bassist of Motley Crue).
DJ Ashba (guitarist of Sixx Am, former guitarist of Guns N Roses).
Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla and SpaceX)
and Steve Jobs (CEO/co-founder of Apple)

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I found my passion very young. I was in a kindergarten fashion show where we dressed up like what we wanted to be when we grew up (for me a Rockstar) and walked the runway.
I played smoke on the water by deep purple on stage. It was my first performance!
I have always been a bit different. No one else my age had a clue who the musicians were that I listened to. But I didn't care! I just stayed true to me. It is hard to do sometimes when you don't fit in with the others your age. The thing is, what makes someone inspiring to one, may not be inspiring to another.
I had someone tell me I inspired them to start an Instagram page to share their music. I have had people tell me I inspire them to stay positive. I have had others who have similar passions for music who have said I inspire them to keep pushing. I even have had some grown-ups who have started playing or learning guitar because of my influence. One of my favorites is a friend who said if I could get out and do what I loved than he could too! And he created a band and performs all the time now!

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I have had some amazing opportunities. I played in an opening band for LA Guns at the legendary Whiskey a-go-go! I go to an Arts school and get to play music I love and hang out with people who share the same passions! I guest regularly in a band called Heavy Revel with professional musicians, many of whom have toured with some of the greats! I have played on stages from House of Blues to tiny small-town bars. I have been able to lay down tracks in a recording studio with an Instagram musician friend for her upcoming album, and I have recorded my own original music too! I know this is only the beginning of what is to come, and I feel very fortunate!

I truly appreciate this opportunity. It is humbling and inspiring to me, to think that I could possibly inspire someone else the way people inspire me!

Justin Toney - Maryland
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Jennifer Didio Photography
Issue 29 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Justin Toney is an incredible young man whose giving heart matches his warm smile. He jumps in with both feet ready to give his very best to all he gets involved with. He’s a lover of God, all kinds of music (he serenaded my team with Maneater from the 80s during his session!) football, lacrosse and working out. He brings a smile to the face of all who are fortunate enough to do life with him! Justin would make an awesome addition to your Inspiring Teens!
Picture

We know you are a fan of all kinds of music, but, if you had to pick one genre, what would it be?
I would pick 1970s to 1980s Pop Rock. I love older music and all the talent needed to create music back then. Plus, my favorite song is Rich Girl by Hall and Oates. Also, without Pop Rock, no one would ever be able to enjoy The Guardians of the Galaxy!

Tell us about how dedicated you are when it comes to following through with events.
Once I set my mind to an event I don’t stop until it succeeds. One great example would be FCA group (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). Not satisfied with our group numbers my Junior year, I tried as hard as I could to get people to come to club this year, my senior year. I managed to get the group from 3 leaders and 33 members to 10 leaders and almost 80 members.
Picture

What are some ways you get involved in your school and/or community?
Until I suffered an injury, I was a 3-sport athlete playing football, lacrosse, and wrestling. Unable to continue wrestling, I help with managing for basketball and remain heavily involved in school spirit and class events such as Powder Puff.

I’ve also participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) all four years of high school and been the FCA leader since my sophomore year.

I’m also a member of the Mock Trial team at my school, a competition in Maryland teaching law, debate, and public speaking skills, as well as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America.
Besides school involvement, I actively participate at my church, Glyndon United Methodist in our Vespers program and youth Sunday. I also regularly attend Young Life, which consists of Christian students from several high schools.

In addition, I work a part-time job several days a week at Firehouse Subs and I intern for Maryland’s fastest growing sports company, Venom Core Athletics.

If someone had to describe you in 3 words, what do you think they would say and why?

People would almost certainly describe me as joyful. I am always having fun no matter where I am and if you’re with me, there’s almost never a dull moment. Next, they would say I’m strong-willed. Lastly, they would say I’m eccentric for reasons such as, playing the harmonica at film for football, to wearing crazy outfits at school, or juggling apples at lunch.

If you had the opportunity to travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would 100% go to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a.k.a. The Avatar Mountains. Located in China, they are the scene of one of my favorite movies, ‘Avatar’. Not only is the scenery beautiful, I would love to climb the mountains and use a glider to fly between the mountains. I think it would be one of the most amazing experiences a person could have.
