Cabel Jarrett – North Carolina
Interview by Larissa Chelius
Nomination and Photography by TAP Photography
Issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Cabel Jarrett, age 16, is beyond the shadow of a doubt an awe-inspiring teenager. Being the youngest of his class, he pursues excellence inside and outside of the classroom. Although his top 5 class rank is impressive, it barely touches the reason he is inspiring. Cabel’s passion is teaching others through hands on activities. He spends his time teaching public speaking classes, swim training, and ski instruction lessons.
Picture
How did you become the great leader you are today?
I have gained my leadership qualities through my experiences. Being able to meet new people and get out of my comfort zone has created the leader I am today.

Tell us about being the FBLA western region Vice President, and what that title brings.
I was elected for the position over a year ago and it has had a huge impact in my life so far. Basically, I was elected to help lead a national organization that prepares young adults to enter business related fields in their future. My specialty was public speaking; therefore, I got the chance to travel around the country learning/teaching others how to excel at public speaking in real life scenarios.

What has instructing swim and ski lessons contributed to your life over time?
Instructing lessons for swimming and skiing has ultimately led to me becoming more personable. It has even brought me a new passion; kids! I realized that I love to teach others, so I would like to incorporate those new passions into my life.

Picture
What opportunities have you been given by being in the top 5 class rank?
I am immensely rewarded by the mental acknowledgment of my effort. I love knowing that I have taken every opportunity possible to succeed.

As a player in Cougar football as the tackle position what are your expectations of time, and how do you make excess time for your other activities?
Playing football is very demanding to the respects of your personal time. The sport requires loads of effort and commitment. However, that never means you do not have time for other activities. One simply must be interested in something in order to participate. I have missed very few opportunities because I play football.

Picture
How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I honestly have a photographic memory, so I don’t really write anything down. I am probably the worst person to ask this question to.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Focus only on the future: it never hurts to dream big.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
Graduating from college and considering applying for a doctorate program.

Picture
What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Probably the fact that I am very outgoing.

Who do you find inspiring?
Young men and women who serve in the military.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Playing the piano!

Pizza or Tacos? Soda or Water? Cats or Dogs?

Ashlyn So - California
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Angela Wu
Issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ashlyn started to learn how to sew at the age of 6. She then told her mom she wants to be challenged and she started designing her own clothes. Soon, by age 9 she was invited to fashion shows and she also showed during NYFW. Her imagination is untainted, and her style is avant-garde. She’s unafraid to experiment. Always cheerful, she is now designing and sewing custom gowns for women, teens and tweens.
Picture
Angela Wu Ashlyn's design process and getting the custom Dragon Dress ready for a Chinese themed Fundraising Gala.
How did you become interested in sewing?
I started asking my mom to go to a sewing class when I was 5, and a year later she finally gave in to her fear of me hurting myself with the sewing machine. My mom signed me up for a sewing camp for one week. I fell in love and started making my own clothes at home. I was so happy. We would go to fashion shows and museums together and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Designing clothes made me so happy.

Who is your inspiration when it comes to fashion and why?
I love Alexander McQueen and Ben Taverniti’s designs. But what really inspires me are everyday objects which I piece together and turn them into my design.

Tell us about your experience with NYFW. What was your favorite part of the whole day?
My favorite part was helping the models get ready for the runway. I loved how rushed we were, and I loved the energy. I felt like it was a dream come true and I will never forget it.
Picture

If you were not designing and creating clothes, what do you think you would be doing?
If I wasn’t designing or making clothes I would be drawing and making crafts. I always loved drawing and how I can just let my brush flow freely.

What stores would you like to have your clothes be sold in and why?
I love making custom clothes for women and girls. I love the direct connection with them. I love seeing that SMILE from their hearts when they wear the designs that represent their personality. It gives me so much joy and satisfaction to see them happy.

Picture
Samaritan House - During the Live Auction at Samaritan House Main Event when Ashlyn was interviewed by the emcee, KTVU 2 anchorman, Frank Somerville.
Anything else you would like to tell us about?
Yes, I would like to talk about my experience with Samaritan House. I like helping people. Samaritan House is a local charity and they help out those who are in need of food, clothes, shelter, and medicine. They have a Kid’s Closet which gives out clothes to kids in need. We donated 20 pieces from my ready-to-wear line and the Samaritan House staff told us that all the kids love them, and the clothes were given away in the first few days. I was so glad to be able to help other kids like me. Samaritan House also have an annual Gala to raise money. I offered my services for a custom gown and raised $4,000 at a live auction. I was so glad to help out and make a change. The people in need works hard and are not as lucky as me, but they deserve to have as much as me. They have had their rough times and we all need to help them out. I was so happy to be able to put a SMILE on their faces.
I hope to inspire other girls no matter how old they are to reach their dreams.

Picture

Gabriella Morando - Ohio
Interview by Claire Path
Nomination by Elisabeth Morando
Photography by David Beckham Photography
Issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Gabi is inspiring because she is incredibly dedicated to and passionate about the things that are important to her. She has studied classical ballet for 12 years and devotes up to 20 hours per week to dance, striving for excellence and perfection despite exhaustion and pain from injuries. Ballet has taught her the necessity of practicing something over and over again in order to achieve every bit of progress, something that requires so much patience and focus. She applies the same qualities to metal sculpting and jewelry-making, for which she has won statewide awards. Gabi is an honors student with a 4.4 GPA and a flexible school schedule so she can work to advance her community service projects, too, like her volunteer work for the Ronald McDonald House and human trafficking charities like her own initiative, Prevent-Prepare-Stay Aware, and she has reached thousands of elementary students with her anti-bullying pro-kindness message. Gabi is currently Miss Ohio High School.
Picture
How has your passion for classical ballet impacted your daily life, and what do you love most about dancing?
Ballet touches everything I do because studying this art has had such a huge impact on who I am. Classical ballet has taught me discipline, patience, appreciation for my mind and body, and it has given me a strong work ethic. Ballet is so focused on perfecting the smallest of moves that it has taught me the necessity of practicing something again and again in order to make incremental improvements. I understand nutrition and injury prevention and care because of ballet, and I have learned to love classical music and the beautiful stories that dancers tell without words.
My favorite thing, though, is performing. So many hours go into preparing for just a few minutes on stage, but the feeling I get from performing is like none other, and it’s always worth it.

When did you first start pageantry, and what is one of your favorite experiences from it?
I started pageants at age 9. Since then, pageantry has truly been the most amazing journey, and I’m so thankful to be able to do it. One of the best things about it is being able speak with kids and hear their experiences. Just last winter, I made one little girl’s dearest Christmas wish come true. My first ballet teacher told me about a young student dreaming of being a pageant princess with a beautiful dress and crown, but her family couldn’t do that for her. I was blessed to be able to surprise her with a perfect ballgown and tiara, and we had a photo shoot to commemorate the day. It was something I’ll never forget.

Picture
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
My dream and my goal is that in 5 years I will be dancing professionally in a classical ballet company, and I will be serving on the board of a significant anti-human trafficking non-profit, helping make changes in legislation and social programs to help victims. And I will be Miss Universe!

What do you love most about volunteering to help others in need?
Volunteering is something I have grown up doing. I still remember visiting and helping to serve meals with my mom at homeless shelters when I was only 4 years old. I love being able to serve other people, and the feeling I get from doing that is so magical. I feel blessed that I have had role models in my life who have taught me the importance of giving back and helping others who are not as fortunate.

How has your involvement in your community impacted who you are and what you stand up for?
Community service has given me a certain perspective on life that I don’t think I would have if I only looked to my own needs. Seeing what other people go through makes me appreciate what I have so much more, and it reminds me to take nothing for granted. Helping others has done so much good for me, and I’m so grateful to all the organizations I’ve worked with for giving me a chance to make a difference.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t be afraid to go after what you want! It’s so easy to let fear stop you from trying things because, frankly, trying something new is scary. But if you face your fear and go ahead and try, you will always find that what you’re afraid of isn’t so scary after all.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Time management is a real challenge but I’m really lucky that my school was just starting an online curriculum when I was an entering freshman, and they agreed to let me be the first student to try a blended schedule of some online classes and some in-school classes. So I get to use school labs and facilities for science and art, for instance, but I have the flexibility of online classes that I can do whenever and wherever I am. I like to work ahead as much as I can when I have time, too, so I can focus on dance more when I need to or do my community service projects.
Picture

What do you enjoy most about jewelry making and what awards have you won from it?
I love how jewelry making is so detail-oriented. It takes so long to make the smallest chain link or a single engraving, but the work put in shows in the final product. I have won gold and silver keys in the Scholastic Art Competition, was a finalist in the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, and I was the one student chosen to represent my congressional district in the Ohio House of Representatives Student Art Exhibition that will remain on display for this entire year.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
If I inspire others, I hope it’s because they can relate to me and the struggles I have had and hard work I have to do to reach for my dreams. When I was little, my shyness made me quit ballet after my first class because I couldn’t stand people looking at me. That shyness is still there inside me, and it’s a constant effort for me to fight it. But the effort has made me strong enough to be able to continually face my fear and perform onstage, speak in front of crowds, and put myself out there to be judged by pageant judges and everyone else who is watching. If I can do that, believe me — anyone can do it.

Who do you find inspiring?
I get inspiration from many sources, including some famous people like my favorite, Audrey Hepburn. But mainly I’m inspired every day by the people I’m surrounded by—people at school who work so hard to get amazing grades, the girls I dance with who never give up even when it’s painful and difficult, my family and friends who believe in me and support me no matter what.

Picture
Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I’m so honored to be featured in Inspiring Teens magazine. I know I have had the benefit of being inspired by many amazing people, and the possibility that I can provide inspiration for someone else is wonderful and humbling. I’m very grateful.

Kiley Bridgmon – South Carolina
Interview by Larissa Chelius
Nomination by Amanda Bridgmon
Photography by Linda Bridgmon & Lorie Breland
Issue 24 - Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kiley is an upcoming Senior athlete this year. She has the biggest heart and passion for others. She has a 4.741 GPA. She won All Region in softball this past year. Her future goals are to play softball for a college while studying physical therapy.
Picture
What obstacles have you had to overcome while playing softball?
One of the main obstacles I have had to overcome playing softball is confidence. If you don’t step out onto the field every single game with the right attitude and mind set, things will never go your way. You have to believe that you are the BEST girl that ever stepped up to the plate or played that position. No, it’s not being arrogant and thinking you are better than everyone else, it’s confidence!

What kind of training, and time did it take to win All Region in softball this past year?
Softball is definitely a job. You put in the work at practice to be the best possible player you can be. It takes dedication. For me it meant staying after practice to work on the things that didn’t necessarily work that day AT practice. For example, if we hit during practice and I didn’t hit all that great, then I would stay after and fix my swing.

What position do you play for softball?
I mostly play center field, but I have played every position at least once.
Picture
With your love for children, how do you use that love in your everyday life?
I am not known for showing too many emotions in person, however, when it comes to children, I have a soft spot. This past year I mentored a kindergarten class and absolutely fell in love with every single child in that room. I try and look at everyone as I looked at those children and have the same compassion that I would for them.

Tell me a little bit about what you do at home in order to maintain a 4.741 GPA.
To maintain a 4.741 GPA may sound like I do a lot of work at home, but I won’t lie and say that I do. I mostly try and absorb all that I can inside the classroom and then will just go over the material again when I get home.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The only reason I am where I am today is because of God. He has given me every opportunity and every experience I’ve ever been a part of. I would tell someone to trust in Him and love others as He loves us.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I see myself graduating from Physical Therapy school and about to start my new job as a PT.

Picture
What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel like I inspire others to work hard. Without hard work and dedication, you will never be able to succeed in anything that you do.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Jenny Finch inspiring. Not only was she an Olympic Softball player but she is also an incredible person in general.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Sometimes it gets very difficult to keep everything straight at times. It may sound a little crazy, but I put everything that I have to do for the month on my calendar that hangs on my wall. I’ve become so much more responsible using it!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I LOVE to deer hunt with my dad! Every weekend we run dogs in Bamberg and I have the best time. Not only do I get to do what I love but I get to spend quality time with my dad.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can actually sing and do very often at my church, Friendship Baptist!

Pizza or Tacos? Soda or Water? Cats or Dogs?
Tacos, Soda & Dogs!

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to deer hunt in Canada, Parasail, and go to Hawaii.

Savannah Koonce - Louisiana
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Lori Koonce
Photography by Amy Holt Photography
Issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Savannah Koonce is an 18 year old graduate from Live Oak High School in Watson, LA. She has been involved in music since the 6th grade. She has since been active in her school bands, placed in talented music programs, been a member of the Louisiana Junior Youth and Youth Orchestras for 6 years and made multiple All Parish, District, and All South Honor Bands throughout her junior and high school years. She has also been the recipient of many awards for her solo performances during band competitions and most recently was awarded the John Sousa Award, a pinnacle achievement. She will be pursuing a degree in Music Education at Louisiana State University, where she will also be a member of the Golden Band, to inspire, teach, and share her love of music to other children and teens in Louisiana Schools. She is a true inspiration.
Picture
Who has inspired you as a musician and why?
My high-school band director Brian Feigles. He is such a devoted musician and has a strong passion for teaching. He is selfless and pushes his students to be the best that they can when they perform or study music. He’s helped me prepare for so many auditions and challenged me to become better.

How did you become interested in teaching kids about music, and how do you see yourself accomplishing that?
I absolutely love kids. And I have a strong passion for music. So, I figured why not combine the two? I’ve taught lessons for clarinet before and was a leader in Live Oak High-school band and it really opened my eyes to how much I love teaching music. I’m accomplishing this by studying Music Education at LSU!

What opportunities have come with being a very active musician, and what do you love most about music?
I’ve met so many people, and they’ve all ended up being good friends of mine. I’ve also been able to travel a lot for music. I played solos at Disney world for two years and received an outstanding soloist award for each of them. We also got to travel to six flags where I played another solo and received an award for that one too!! I love how music is its own language. It takes you out of reality and into this whole new world where there’s no words. Just sound. It’s so beautiful.
Picture
What has your musical journey been like through the years?
A rollercoaster that’s scary but thrilling. There’s been so many times where I’ve had a really good streak going on with my auditions and music and then something happens that takes me on a more challenging ride. Like for example, I broke my hand and wrist a few weeks before Parish auditions and a concert that I had a solo at. One week out of surgery I still auditioned and performed through the pain at my own choice.

Can you us about your passion for helping animals and how it has impacted you.
I love helping animals, not matter what kind they are. My parents have gotten so used to me bringing some animal that I found abandoned or sick in, that they don’t even question it anymore. Helping animals really showed me the true value of life and how precious everything is.

Tell us about your travel experiences and volunteer work you are involved in through your faith.
I’ve traveled to so many places with my church. We’ve gone to South Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, and more. I’ve helped feed the homeless, shared the word with kids in foster care while hanging out with them, helped a YMCA that needed people to help watch kids, pick up trash after football games and on the side of the road, given kids food and played with them and shared God with them at parks, and so much more.
Picture
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard. Every time there’s something in your path, there will always be another route that can lead you to a better one, or one with more adventure!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
Teaching kids. I plan to be a High-school band teacher.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I’ve never given up. No matter how hard and overwhelming it got. I’ve packed on so many hobbies that I’ve learned to balance and prioritize.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I have a mental calendar. I only use my physical one when there’s too much going on at once.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Drawing. I love to sketch. Or workout. If my body is healthy, my mind is healthy.
Picture
Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? I can kind of sing and play piano.

Who do you find inspiring? Artie Shaw

Pizza or Tacos?  Soda or Water? Cats or Dogs? Pizza. Water. Both

3 Things on your bucket list: Perform in New York’s Carnegie Hall, meet Martin Fröst, and travel the country.

Anything else you’d like to tell us? Nope! I think that covers it!

Ava Dwyer - Maryland
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Kate Mitchem Photography
Issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ava Dwyer lit up my day when she showed up for her Dance Photo shoot a few weeks ago. The grace and beauty just flowed through the tips of her fingers to the tips of her pointed toes! Not only is she an incredible dancer who attends an International Baccalaureate high school in D.C., and dances every moment that she's not going to school or helping to teach at a local elementary school, but she still finds time to help rebuild schools in Africa!! She loves different cultures and meeting new people but her beauty is best seen through her dance!
Picture
What do you love most about dance?
What I love most about dance is how free I feel. It allows me to release every bit of tension and focus on whatever story I am trying to portray. However, dancing is a constant battle to try to be better, forcing me to always push the limits and discover new and exciting ways to look at dance. I think that this urge to push myself to be better than I ever have been is what keeps me driven, and protects my love for dance.

Picture
What is the International Baccalaureate high school in D.C and how does it differ from other high schools?
I attend Washington International School, and I am currently going into my junior year (11th grade). WIS is located in Washington, DC, and it is a multilingual private school that offers a full International Baccalaureate program. WIS is different from other high schools because of the large diversity in nationalities students represent, the incredible faculty with international backgrounds, and the challenging educational program it provides. The school opens doors to a large array of opportunities, including attending college anywhere in the world based on the International Baccalaureate diploma. WIS has a large but close-knit community that I am proud to say I am a part of.

Tell me a little bit about your experience volunteering at a school in Africa.
Each year at Washington International School, there are various trips students can apply to be a part of. Trips to New Orleans, China, Guatemala, Peru, and Morocco are among them. Along with 16 other people, I was accepted to participate in a trip to a small town in Morocco called Azrou. The town is quite beautiful, sitting below two mountains. There are funding issues for public schools in Morocco, particularly for small towns like Azrou, so our aim was to improve some aspects of a local elementary school. We brought a total of nine computers, taught workshops on technology, language, and hygiene, and built a new library for the school, complete with donated books that were donated by fellow students. It was an amazing experience.

Picture
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be ambitious. The only way to achieve your goals in life is to fight for them. For me, I always tell myself to not settle for anything less than the best I can do. If you want something bad enough, push yourself to get there and you will. Believe in what you are capable of, and more importantly, believe in yourself!

Ava will be published in issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!

Aside from the hard work as a dancer, Andrea is also giving back to the community by performing at the Toronto International Dance Festival this summer while trying to inspire others as a brand ambassador for Sugarhaul as well as for Just Strong: Women inspiring Women.

What is life like while you are in the studio? What about when you leave the studio?
When I’m at the studio it’s like an adventure begins, when I leave, the adventure is over. It’s a good place for creativity and it’s fun to learn new tricks. When I’m in the studio it’s all about dance and working towards being a better dancer, and when I leave, it’s time to relax.

What do you do with your free time, if you get any?
In my free time I like to play with my little sister or hang out with my older brother. Sometimes I also like to work on dance moves on my own.

What was it like changing studios and meeting new dancers?
It was hard and exciting at the same time. You build strong friendships when you dance and compete together and grow as a team. So that was the hard part. But meeting new dancers, new teachers and learning from them is exciting as it helps you grow as a dancer, and just makes your dance family bigger. And in the end, you have more dance friends.

Picture
Tell us about your experiences training with the National Team Canada Dance.
It was an intense experience. It was hard and challenging, training for 10 full days straight to learn the choreography, and then every weekend thereafter until the completion. But I am thankful as I got the chance to become a better dancer while training with this fabulous team. And I am also thankful for the friends I made.

What is the World Dance Championship? What was your involvement with it?
The World Dance Championship is organized by the International Dance Organization and brings together dancers from all around the world. This year there were 1,336 dancers from 25 nations across 4 continents. I was part of 4 routines in the Children’s division and contributed to the team’s success as follows: Gold in Ballet Formation and Jazz Small Group, Silver in Jazz Formation and Bronze in Ballet small group.

How do you deal with someone who isn’t understanding of your schedule when they try to make plans with you?
The only thing I can say, is “Sorry, I have dance” and my friends are used to me missing their birthday parties or other activities.

Picture
How did you become an Ambassador for Sugarhaul? What does it entail on your end and how do you benefit from it?
I was selected as a Sugarhaul Ambassador through an online application process consisting in a combination of questions, pictures, Instagram presence and interaction.
My role as an ambassador is to help promote the brand and the benefits are to be promoted and featured on their social media in return, as well ad share some discounts and offers with my friends.  This is fun experience where I get to make new friends and extend my online presence as well.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard, play hard, train hard, have fun and believe you can

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
Being able to do a lot of acro tricks, become famous

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Dance. I would like to think it’s because I am a hardworking dancer that trains hard and tries their best no matter how tired or sore I may be.

Picture
How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
My mom is my calendar and helps me stay organized.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I really like to play basketball and was accepted into the school team, only dance schedule didn’t permit me to actually do it. I also like going to the park and spend time with the family.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can touch my nose with my tongue as well as I can touch my wrist with my thumb.

Picture
Who do you find inspiring?
Ariana Grande. She inspires me to believe in what I do and have fun with it. She also inspires me to make every situation positive.

Pizza or Tacos? Soda or Water? Cats or Dogs?
Pizza. Water. Dogs

3 Things on your bucket list
Meet Ariana Grande. Star in at least one movie. Dance in a Las Vegas Show.

Issue 23 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Zoe is 13 years old and just finished her 10th year dancing for Philadelphia Dance Center. She is a member of their award-winning company and has been competing for 8 years. This year was especially exciting because she won 1st place overall in her age group and 4th overall in the entire competition for a solo she completely choreographed herself.
For the last 2 years she has also been a part of Brickdoor Productions, a youth theater group, where she just finished her 4th production.
She loves dance and everything she has learned from it both in and out of the studio.

How do you work through the rigorous hours of work that comes with dance?
As a dancer, the long hours are to be expected, and as grueling as they might be in that moment, I just have to remember that I'm at the studio because I want to be there. I chose to come to Philadelphia Dance Center to create and learn. It's my creative outlet, so it doesn't feel long at all.

Could you describe what the commitment is like for dance?
There is a lot of commitment involved with dance. I've had to give up a couple small things for dance, but in the end there's no place I'd rather be than in the studio. My teammates are like family to me.

By being a dancer for Philadelphia Dance Center and playing a part in Brickdoor Productions, what have they taught you that could help you off stage?
I've learned many things. Some of which being to never give up, determination and passion gets you far in life, try new things, and do your best in everything you do!

What productions have you done with Brickdoor Productions?
I have done James and the Giant Peach, Schoolhouse Rock, a youth performers showcase, and Go Fish the musical with Brickdoor Productions.

Picture
What opportunities have you received off stage for being a member of these various groups?
I've been able to be an ambassador for Chris Henrikson photography.
I've been able to do a concept video with Kaylee Pirrung.
I've been able to do a RuPaul tribute with Alexa Marie Santy.
And I've been able to model for Artstone Costumes and Costume Gallery.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give is to not give up, and only be in competition with yourself to be better.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I will be graduated from high school. I will hopefully continue dancing and become a professional dancer/ choreographer.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my drive inspires others.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I memorize my schedules and due dates for school and dance.

Picture

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite activities outside of dance are reading, drawing, and photography.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My arms are hyper-extended so they can rotate in and out of their socket.

Who do you find inspiring?
My family and friends inspire me.

Pizza or Tacos?  Soda or Water? Cats or Dogs?
Pizza, water, dogs

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are to travel, see a drive-in movie, and have a bonfire with friends

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I'm so excited to be working with Inspiring Teens

Brooke Cannon - Pennsylvania
Interview by Caroline Alegado
Nomination by Kim Cannon
Photography by Captured Yew
Issue 23 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Brooke is going into her sophomore year at CAPA. She is an honor student and finished her freshman year with a 4.2 GPA.

Brooke has been dancing for 11 years. Her home studio is the Philadelphia Dance Center where she studies many styles of dance in their pre professional dance program. She is also member of the Beat Addikts United performance team. This summer she will be attending The Rock School of Ballet's summer intensive.

Brooke also enjoys theater, and just finished her 6th show with Brick Door Productions. She has also been their chorographer for several shows.
Picture
As a member of Beat Addikts United, what experiences and/or performances have you enjoyed?
I always enjoy dancing with Beat Addikts United! The 2018-19 season was my first year on their performance team and I loved it. My favorite BAU performance is their annual showcase. It's a unique show and a lot of fun. Many choreographers and dancers are involved, and each performance has a theme and/or tells a story.

What is your favorite style of dance?
I love many styles of dance and enjoy learning new ones, but right now my favorites are contemporary and hip hop. I can’t choose just one.

I know you have started choreographing shows. How does this compare to dancing and which do you prefer?
Choreographing has been a new challenge for me. It has allowed me to understand what many of my teachers and choreographers do and has introduced me to another side of dance. I really enjoy choreographing, but I still have a lot to learn. I’m very thankful for the opportunities that I have been given, but I still focus on my dance training. It's hard to say which I prefer, but I want to continue to pursue both.

Picture
How do you balance school and dance?
My academics have always been very important to me. I love dancing, but my schoolwork comes first. Juggling both can get stressful at times, but doing what I love helps keep me focused. A lot of times I try to start homework when I have time in school, and then finish it before or after dance class.

Who inspires you in your dance and theater career?
The people that inspire me the most are my teachers, directors, and fellow performers. We push each other to be our best. I feel grateful that I have a strong support system filled with people who are passionate about the same things.

How do you plan to use the lessons you learned now to help you in the future?

A big lesson I’ve learned is that success comes from hard work. Being grateful for everything you’ve accomplished along the way is crucial, because dreams don’t come easily. This mindset will help me in the future, because it reminds me to look back on how far I’ve come.

Picture

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I have a few pastimes that weren’t in my nomination. A few of my favorites are going shopping, surfing, and watching Stranger Things!

Layken Sanders – Tennessee
Interview by Zoe DAngelo
Nomination by Jeni Sanders
Photography by Jeni Sanders & Amber McKellar
Issue 23 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Layken Sanders is such an inspiring teen, because she has devoted the last 4 years to collecting shoes for Soles4Souls. She has currently collected 42,000 pairs of shoes and is on track to meet her goal of 50,000 pairs by the end of 2019. Layken has been on a mission trip to Haiti to deliver, size, and fit brand-new pairs of shoes on 450 children. She works hard every day for this charity, while keeping straight As in her honors classes, and being on multiple competition cheer teams, in which she has been named most reliable and best stunter, as well as numerous awards at school.

Tell us about your involvement with Soles4Souls. How did it get started and what is it like?

When I was 10 years old, I decided to stop receiving birthday gifts and in the place of presents I asked for gently used shoes to be donated to Soles4Souls. This nonprofit charity organization based in middle TN seemed like the perfect charity for me to be involved with, because of their outreach to so many children and families all over the world. Once I dropped off the shoes I had collected for my birthday, I was given a tour of the warehouse, and given so much information about how they impact so many lives. At that point, my brother and I set a goal to collect 50,000 pairs of shoes and become Ambassadors for Soles4Souls. We are currently at over 42,000 pairs collected.

Other than shoes, would you be interested in donating different articles of clothing?

Yes, I have been interested in donating other items, as well. I have helped with a local coat drive and was able to collect 161 coats to be donated. That was a great cause that I will continue to support.

How do you keep yourself organized with helping with Soles4Souls while keeping straight A’s in school?
I keep myself organized with my commitment to Soles4Souls, my straight As in honors classes, and my multiple All Star and School Competitive Cheer Teams by having a goal oriented attitude. I stay focused on my goals, create new ones as I go, and stay positive when times are tough. I always want to strive for the best and I'm not afraid of putting in a lot of hard work and effort to achieve my goals.

Tell us about the trip you are taking to Haiti.

I went on a mission trip to Haiti a year and a half ago. It was life changing! To be a part of an organization who helps improve the quality of life for other living beings is priceless. I got to see firsthand how children couldn't attend school if they didn't have a pair of shoes. That affected me deeply, because I couldn't even imagine not being given the opportunity to get at least a basic education. I learned so much during this experience that I will value for a lifetime. Such as, not taking anything for granted and how to be an advocate for change. I loved getting to go to several orphanages, schools, and villages to deliver 450 pairs of brand-new shoes to excited kids. It was also amazing to visit the Haitian American Caucus to meet two ladies who were apart of the microenterprise program. I can't wait to go back soon!

Anna Buffington

Anna Buffington - Pennsylvania
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Natika Buffington
Photography by Sherry Wilkinson Photography
Issue 23 - Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Anna is an inspiring teen due to her mental disability. She suffers from MDD and anxiety. Throughout the years Anna has taught her peers what the face of Bipolar looks like. One day in class a boy referred to something as being “bipolar”. Anna turned around and asked him what bipolar was and what does it look like? He couldn't answer. She then pointed to herself and told him, “This is the face of bipolar.” He was stunned. Her teacher overheard the conversation and emailed me thinking I would be upset with her. It was honestly one of the best moments of being her parent!
Picture
To start off, I wouldn’t say I “suffer” from my mental disorders. I have them and they are a part of me, that’s it. I deal with anxiety, which causes me to overthink many situations within my daily life, and even makes me back out of doing certain things because I often doubt myself. My MDD causes me at times to become super depressive, not want to talk, eat, or even associate with others. When in that depressive state, I usually just sit around because I cannot sleep either.
Picture
To deal with these disorders I am on two different medications that kind of mellow out how I’m feeling. I also see a therapist regularly who gives me different coping mechanisms. Most people use the term “bipolar” when they mean indecisive. They usually use it to characterize someone who changes their mind frequently, but that is not bipolar.
Picture
What they don’t see is the nights crying because you feel like you are inadequate compared to everyone around you. They do not see the family members trying to cheer you up in any way possible, while you sit there and disregard all their actions.

People with similar disorders should be aware that they do not have to be ashamed of it. They should know that it is okay to ask for help whenever they need it, and they are not an inconvenience for asking. If they did not feel comfortable talking about it, it is better off to give them their space, because that may be all they need.

Picture
I learned to not take my disorders so seriously, and to be open and honest about them. They aren’t something that needs to be hidden, because there isn’t anything to be ashamed about. People cannot help that they have mental disorders, so the best thing to do is to embrace them, since it causes more damage fighting them.
