Tatum Scott – Colorado
Nomination by Jaylan
Photography by Sandy Puc Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Tatum Scott is the most inspiring 17 year old I know. She plays basketball and leads a club at her school that supports, uplifts, and encourages her classmates, peers, and the school. She is a light, a joy, and inspiration to her family, teachers, and friends. She has a heart to love, help and care about people in any way that she can. Which makes her chosen career path quite perfect as she is preparing to go to school to study to become a medical PA.
She deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated because that is what she does for everyone else every day.

Tell us about your basketball career. When did you get started and where are you at with it now?

I have always loved sports and been an athletic person. But I started basketball in 6th grade. Mostly because I was bored and one of my friends was doing it. But I fell in love with the sport. I quit softball so that I could focus on basketball and be able to excel at it because I wasn’t very good when I started. In 8th grade I was one of 2 people on my team that had ever played and it pushed me to be better so that our team could still put up a fight and that is when I knew I wanted to play in highschool. I moved schools at the start of Freshman year and I was really nervous to play but I went out there and did my best and the coaches were super helpful and I started playing club and putting a lot more effort into doing better so that I could make Varsity. By my junior year I made varsity but I was really upset because my coach never played me. But this only pushed me to work harder to be better. I found a new club team and basketball was all that I did over the summer. I went pretty much everyday for at least 2 hours. Then when we started our pre season games with my school team my coach was very impressed at my improvement. I ended up being a starter on varsity for my senior year. We also won districts which is the first time any team in any sport has done that at my school. We also made it to state but we didn’t make it too far in the tournament.

What do you love most about basketball and your team?
The thing that I love most about basketball is that it is a physical sport and it is overall just really fun. It is a very mental game as well. Something that I love about my team is how supportive we all are of each person on our team. An example of this is that I have a teammate, her name is Ekko, and the night before our senior game she only needed 27 more points to get 1,000 points in her 4 years of highschool. When she hit her 1000 points, our coach called a time-out and we stopped the game to celebrate this amazing milestone. This is truly something that I will always remember just seeing how everyone ran out onto the floor to surround her and how we were all just so happy for her.

What is your coach like and how have they inspired you?
My coach is young and he is a really fun coach during practices. We are allowed to have fun while still getting things that we need to get done. One way that he inspired me is to push myself to the next level and to work hard so that I could be a starter my senior year.

What is the club that you lead? Tell us why it's so important to you.
The club that I lead is called Reach. It is a place where people can have an escape while they are at school. It is to build up a community and to bring people together who wouldn’t always necessarily be friends. It is a place for people to feel accepted, loved and comfortable. Somewhere that we can talk about the hard questions and a place that people can open up about their thoughts and their struggles, a place where everyone supports one another. Somewhere that people can feel compassion towards them and extend theirs to others. It is important to me because I know what it feels like to feel out of place or to not have somewhere in a school environment that I can talk about the hard stuff and the questions that I have. It is most of all a Bible study group. We talk about God and the things that people don’t know and we build each other up. We have also had a lot of people come that aren’t Christians which I love most of all. They come just because they want a place and a community as well. I love that they still feel comfortable to come because my vision for Reach was for it to just be a safe place for anyone.

What have you learned about yourself as a leader through this organization?
Something that I have learned is that even though I don’t know all the answers and that not everything always goes perfectly all of the time, I most of all can still offer hope to people. I’ve learned that what people need more than anything is just a place to feel comforted, valued, and to feel like they have a place to feel loved and accepted; and that where they are now is not who they are going to be for the rest of their lives – rather it is just a moment in their story - a piece of the puzzle to get them to their dreams.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. Where do you stand out?
My family is really close and we are all really supportive of each other in everything we do. I have 4 siblings – 2 brothers and 2 sisters. I am the youngest of 5 kids and there is a 5 1/2 year gap between me and my closest sibling. I think this is one of the ways that I stand out most within my family, because I am so much younger than the rest of them. Another way I stand out is that my name means “cheerful, bringer of joy” and I believe I live up to my name. I love bringing joy and laughter into every situation, and I am rarely in a bad or sad mood.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
One of my favorite family traditions that I hope never ends is that on Christmas Eve we go to a church service together and then we open gifts on that night. I know most families open gifts on Christmas morning, but I think it is fun opening them that night so that we can have a full day spent together on Christmas Day eating together and enjoying a relaxing day.

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do with them most?
I have a pretty big friend group but we all also hangout in smaller groups within our group. I have a relationship with each person individually which is something I really like about my friend group. We all make it a point to be involved in each person's life, and support each other in our highs and our lows. We often have deep conversations with each other but we also are really good at having fun. I think the thing that mostly brings us together is our youth group. Most, if not all of us, go to the same youth group together.

How did you find and why did you choose Sandy Puc Photography for your photographer?
I chose Sandy Puc photography because they took some photos for my mom, which turned out amazing. Another reason that I chose them is because I really wanted my senior pictures done in a sunflower field, which are my favorite flower, and I think they reflect my personality. Every year, in the fall when the sunflowers are blooming, Sandy Puc schedules photo shoots in a sunflower field. The timing was perfect for when I needed my senior pictures taken, so it just worked out perfectly.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
They were so easy to work with! Very encouraging and so nice! It felt effortless because they knew what they were doing and already had everything set so perfectly. They came up with many fun photo ideas, as well as helped me with some of my ideas.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned from one of your teachers this year?
I am not fully sure about what is most interesting but 2 important things that I have learned is to be patient and to stay motivated. It is really easy to get frustrated with my teachers and it is even easier to be a victim of senioritis. But my teachers have been really good at helping all of us seniors to stay on track and continue to be motivated, and to not let anything hinder our grades.

Why did you choose to become a medical PA?
I chose to pursue becoming a Physician’s Assistant because I have always wanted to go into the medical field. I kept jumping around at what I specifically wanted to do, and went from an OBGYN to a surgeon, then to pediatrics, etc. Then I found out more information about Physician’s Assistants. Some things that influenced my decision are that there are some PA programs that require only five years of schooling to finish; and also that PAs get to practice in a large variety of medical fields (they don’t have to specialize in one specific area). I want to be able to interact with and help as many people as I can.

Tatiana Uribe – California
Nomination & Photography by Keith Alton Portraits
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Tatiana is an inspiring young lady because of her abilities to care for others, intelligence, and commitment to achieving her goals. She demonstrates this everyday through caring for her sisters at a young age and being an advocate for mental health awareness. She is her sister’s number 1 supporter when it comes to school work and sports. Most recently, she has been assisting with one of her younger sisters who was recently diagnosed with autism. This is only one example of why I’m considering her to be inspirational and most importantly a role model for many teens. Along with everyday life challenges, she has been able to achieve high academic success.

What would you like to talk about?

No one ever gives you a manual on how to be a good big sister. I’m always told “you should do this” or “you need to set a good example”. We are born into this role without a choice and sometimes it feels like we walk a thin line while dodging balls. And let’s be honest, I’ve lost my balance, fallen, and most importantly picked myself up again. However, nevertheless, I’m reminded that I may not always succeed as the oldest sister to two younger ones, but as long as I’m learning along the way I’m staying true to my personal manual.

What is your family like and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
My family is composed of kind and supportive individuals who strive to help one another. I am fortunate to have such a supportive environment, which has helped shape me into the person I am today. I stand out from my family members in that I am vocal about the mental health struggles that many of my peers are facing. As the youngest in my family, I am often met with surprise when I discuss the reality of mental health issues, as many of my family members are not accustomed to this topic

What activities do you like doing with your sisters?
I enjoy spending quality time with my sisters, engaging in activities such as playing video games, watching television, and discussing our life experiences. We are able to connect with one another and provide advice on topics such as school, friends, and family. Our diverse personalities and life stages allow us to learn from each other and have a great time. Additionally, we often recreate childhood memories and traditions, such as having dance parties, which is always a highlight.

How do you assist your sister who has autism?
When my sister, Liani, was diagnosed with Autism, it was something that had been suspected for some time. Liani has always been a kind and generous person, and her passion for anime is well-known. I have tried to support my parents in helping her by being patient and understanding that she often just needs someone to listen. Growing up, I found it difficult to accept that she would copy me, but learning more about Autism has helped me to understand that she was looking

What do you wish everyone knew about autism?
It is important to recognize that autism manifests differently in each individual. There is a lack of understanding of the complexities of autism and the challenges that families face. Individuals with autism may experience difficulty with tasks that are considered to be relatively easy for those without the diagnosis, yet they may also excel in certain areas. For example, my sister has an impressive talent for writing, creating poems and letters that are deeply moving and offer a unique perspective on life.

Tell us about your academics and why they are important to you.
During my academic career so far I have never taken AP classes. I was worried I was never going to measure up or be at the same level as many kids in those classes. Therefore I really skipped out on many opportunities in regards to being able to hold myself to a higher standard because I didn't want to be judged. My anxiety got the best of me throughout my years of high school. My grades have always been important to me. I always want to succeed in everything I do and show others what I am capable of.

How did you find and why did you choose Keith Alton Portraits for your photographer?

I was fortunate to find Keith Alton Portraits through a family member who is a current member of a BNI Chapter in California. BNI is the largest networking organization in the US allowing members within the chapters pass successful leads or referrals to help support local businesses. I am so glad I chose Keith McGuire for my senior portraits. He was so patient and kind throughout the entire process. He made sure to take the time to get to know me and my style before the shoot. He also made sure to capture my personality in the photos. He was able to make me feel comfortable and relaxed during the shoot, which made the experience much more enjoyable. I am so happy with the results and I am so glad I chose Keith McGuire for my senior portraits because I was able to develop trust given by my family

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
When I met Mr. McGuire, he was very welcoming and kind. He mentioned that he had been interested in photography for a while, but had never done a senior portrait session before. I was initially nervous, but he made me feel more comfortable by saying that we would be learning together. During the session, I was quite stiff, but Mr. McGuire encouraged me to loosen up and even dance, which eventually turned into a dance party. Working with the photographer enabled me to feel more confident and relaxed. I truly appreciated the opportunity to provide input on how and where I should be photographed, and to express my own ideas throughout the process. Furthermore, the photographer went above and beyond by driving two hours to take my senior pictures and scouting out the best locations three hours before our scheduled meeting.

What has been the best part of being a senior this year?
Senior year has been an eventful journey. It is surreal to think that I am soon to embark on the next chapter of my life, yet I am filled with anticipation. The most rewarding part of this year has been the opportunity to discover myself. I have gained a better understanding of who I am and what I aspire to become. I am determined to be successful and to reach my goals. This year has taught me the importance of pushing past my anxieties and embracing the experiences of high school. I have learned to step out of my comfort zone and attend school sporting events, such as football games, despite the large crowds. This has enabled me to create lasting memories and enjoy my high school years.

What will you miss most about high school?
What I will miss most about high school is the strong relationships I have built with my teachers over the years. They have provided me with invaluable advice and guidance that has helped me become successful. I have a great deal of admiration for my teachers and it is difficult to imagine not seeing them on a daily basis. Additionally, I will miss the environment and the familiarity of seeing my peers every day. It is bittersweet to think of not walking down the halls and seeing some of my friends.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had free time, I would likely spend it with friends. I appreciate the opportunity to go on adventures with them and enjoy the beauty of sunsets in the evening. Sunsets bring me a sense of peace and I find them to be one of the most stunning sights in the world. I often take the time to sit outside with my speaker and snacks to watch the sun set and admire the sky.

How would your friends describe you?
My friends would describe me as a person of great kindness and generosity. I am highly supportive and always available to lend a helping hand. I am known to bring a lighthearted atmosphere to any room I enter, and I am also known for my loyalty and big heart. I am passionate about helping others and always strive to provide the best support I can.

Picture

What do you and your friends like to do in down time?

My friends and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to engage in recreational activities during the summer, such as swimming and visiting parks. We often bring a soccer ball or volleyball to initiate friendly competitions. We also enjoy running through sprinklers in the evening, which often leads to laughter and good-natured fun. During the winter, we often plan movie nights at one another's homes, bringing our favorite snacks to share.

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?
I am eager to embark on my post-graduation journey, which includes traveling the world and learning new languages. I am also looking forward to the challenge of living independently for the first time. I anticipate that this will be a rewarding experience that will provide me with invaluable lessons.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One of the greatest things someone can do for another person is making them feel welcomed. Introductions are rarely unnecessary especially when you come from a small high school in Chico, California. Typically, you know everyone or at least know about them. Majority of the time, those pre- conceived notions are inaccurate. Which is why I strive to ensure that I treat everyone based on my personal experiences with them and not from what I’ve heard. It starts by saying “Hi” to someone and making them feel welcomed. By simply doing that, it gives others hope of feeling a sense of belonging.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I’d like to make the topic of mental awareness a safe haven for all children and teens who are struggling to find their voice and be heard on challenges only known to themselves. I hope to make it a topic that can be discussed openly and freely all while continuing to overcome the obstacles of those who want to silence mental awareness. In the hopes that one day when we are grown, we become the type of adults our younger selves would admire and inspire to be.

Tell us about your lacrosse career. When did you get started and where are you at with it now?
I started playing lacrosse when I was 9 years old. I began playing for a club team in middle school and played for a club team throughout high school as well. Thanks to my lacrosse club family, I will be attending Westminster College in the fall to pursue my academic and athletic careers.

What do you love most about your lacrosse team?
I love how the sport of lacrosse has brought together such a diverse and talented group of girls and how we have created a family.

What is a favorite memory with your team?
I was finally able to experience a normal season, because of COVID, which included driving home from away games on the bus together. We enjoyed laughing, singing, and celebrating a win or a loss.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Growing up my parents taught me to always be kind and helpful. As early as elementary school, my teachers always commented that I was mature and responsible. These traits have carried on into my high school years, especially on the lacrosse field. My coaches can always count on me to be a team player and to play in any position that would benefit the team. As a senior caption this year, my coach can count on me as a leader to help our young team develop.

What does it mean to you to be a senior captain?
It means that I must be a leader and a role model for the underclassmen. It is very important to me that my teammates feel that they can come to me about anything because as an underclassman, I didn’t feel that I could approach the captains.

What else would you like to talk about?
When I moved to South Fayette in third grade, it was difficult to adjust to a new school, make new friends and find something that I was passionate about. I tried many different sports and finally discovered lacrosse in fifth grade. Lacrosse helped to build my confidence, make lifelong friends, and taught me to set goals and work towards them. This led me to my next chapter of playing lacrosse at a collegiate level. Lacrosse is not only my passion but has taught me many important life skills that will help me through my future endeavors.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as you graduate?
I hope to leave my legacy behind as someone who is kind to everyone. I hope that when my teachers and classmates think of me, they will always remember me as someone who was kind.

As a senior, what has been your favorite accomplishment in your school?
My school holds a Mini-THON event, a 12-hour fundraiser for kids fighting pediatric cancer. I am a part of the class that plans and organizes this event. This has taught me so much about the cause, as well as the work that goes into a large-scale fundraiser. This one-day event brings together our school community by hosting over 800 participants.

How did you find and why did you choose McCartney Photography for your photographer?
Close family and friends had their senior photos taken by Melissa and they raved about her work and how amazing she was to work with. I took one look at her work and immediately loved it. I loved how unique every photo was and her many creative poses and ideas.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was so much fun and I had a blast! I enjoyed Melissa’s high energy, passion, and dedication to each shot. She was so fun to work with and is truly the most genuine person I have met.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me hanging with my family or friends, playing with my dog, or relaxing by watching a good show or movie. In the summer, you would find me laying by the pool and reading a good book.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I live with my parents, my little sister, and our dog. As the oldest child, my parents have relied on me to be responsible and mature, as well as to be a good role model to my little sister.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
I enjoy spending time with my mom and my dad’s side of the family. We enjoy vacationing with family each summer as well as spending holidays together.

Picture
Photography by McCartney Photography

How would your friends describe you?
My friends would say that I am kind, fun, helpful, energetic, and athletic.

What do you and your friends do together in your down time?
My friends and I love to go shopping, go out to eat, and going on double dates with my boyfriend, my best friend, and her boyfriend.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Another topic that I feel passionate about is hair care and hair styling. Since I was young, I have always enjoyed styling hair. As a little girl, fixing my barbies and baby dolls hair was my favorite thing to do. After I leave a salon, I always come out feeling refreshed and looking my best and I want to make others feel that way too. My dream is to play lacrosse in college, earn a business degree, attend cosmetology school, and open my own salon.

Samantha Zank – Pennsylvania
Nomination by Mark Corey
Photography by Candi Benek Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination Samantha Zank is a leader, model student athlete, and a hard working teen. Samantha is absolutely amazing in every way. Not surprisingly, Samantha has such a warm heart and compassion for her friends and teammates. I often refer to Samantha as an angel walking on this earth. Last summer one of my girls tragically lost her mother after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. My only senior, Samantha, decided to organize a purple out home basketball game and selected the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation as the beneficiary. Samantha accepted donations for purple noses which she distributed to friends and fans at the game. In total this benefit event generated $8,086. Samantha brings such a competitive spirit and leads by example attitude to the team each day and makes all of us better by demanding our best efforts. Samantha is a blessing to be around and touches the hearts of all those she encounters, including mine.

What do you love about being in a leadership position?

I love having a standard that I have to live up too. It reminds me to hold myself accountable each and every day. It means so much to see my younger teammates following in my example and reflecting in my actions. This helps me strive to be the best version of myself and I hope that I can impact their lives in a positive way by my actions.

What sports do you play and which is your favorite?
I play basketball, volleyball and run track. My favorite sport is basketball. I have been playing this since I was a young girl and have a love for the sport that will never die. Stepping on the court puts me into a different world and all my problems go away. It is my happy place all the time that is so physically and mentally rewarding. I love being a part of a team sport and being surrounded by so many loving people. My basketball teammates have become my family and I am forever thankful for them.

What is a favorite memory with your teammates?
My favorite memories with my teammates range from singing and dancing before all of our games, team sleepovers or just joking around every day at practice. They are so fun to be around all the time and I am forever thankful for them! Everyday there is a new funny surprise that makes me laugh until my stomach hurts. Leaving my second family will make me cherish these memories forever.

What is a favorite accomplishment in sports?
My favorite accomplishment in sports is hosting our pancreatic cancer awareness game. It raised so much more money than I expected and brought all the community together. It was an amazing feeling to be a part of something larger than basketball and seeing the smiles on the faces of the lives I affected. That was such a truly rewarding experience that I am very thankful for.

What will you miss most about your senior year?
There are so many things that I will miss, but the main thing is the people. The people I am surrounded with everyday make all the experiences worth it. I have so many memories that I will carry with me through life. Also friendships that I hope to never lose.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I hope to be a travel registered nurse and graduating with my masters in nursing. I hope my occupation takes me all around the world and lets me visit many places. I am very excited to meet new people and open up my horizons!

Who do you find inspiring?
The person that I am inspired by the most is my father. He is my best friend and my number one supporter in my life. He single handedly raised my brother and I while owning his own business and making it to all of my athletic games. I hope one day I can be as close with my children as we are. He taught me the most amazing life lessons I will share with my family, and that a smile is the best thing a person can wear!

Taylor Swanstrom – Illinois
Nomination & Photography by Suzie Bell Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Taylor Swanstrom has inspired me with her ability to persevere. When she was 10 years old, she began having chronic hip pain. She slowly lost her ability to walk and had to give up dancing- her favorite thing in the world. Almost a year later, she received the diagnosis of Juvenile Arthritis. She had surgery and went through months of physical therapy to re-learn how to walk. The most inspiring part of her story is that through it all she remained positive, and now plans to enter the medical field and help children in similar situations.

What do you want people to know about your condition and where you are with it today?
I’m currently doing great handling my condition. I take medicine twice a day and I haven’t had a problem with it for a few years!

What do you wish people knew about Juvenile Arthritis?
I wish that it was more well-known that kids can have arthritis too. Every time I tell someone they act so surprised!

How did you find and why did you choose Suzie Bell Photography for your senior photographer?
Suzie worked with my mom for many years. She took my family pictures and did a great job, so that’s why I chose her.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I was SO cold because it was only 20 degrees outside, but I loved how beautiful Suzie made me feel!

What has been the best part of being a senior this year?
Getting to celebrate all of my “lasts” with my friends.

Picture
Photography by Monica Swanstrom

What will you miss most about high school?
I’ll definitely miss going to miss prom and homecoming the most.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned recently?
I recently learned that they make left handed scissors. I'm not even left handed so I don't know why I thought this was so cool.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?

Probably in my bed until noon and then hanging out with friends!

What is your family like and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
I have a mom, dad and a younger sister. They love to go out on the weekends, but I’d rather just stay home with my 2 cats- Noodles and Meatball!

What is a favorite memory?
Working at Subway and accidentally pushing a button that calls the police.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
My family and I always play silly games on Christmas Eve and finish the night watching a movie.

What do you and your friends like to do together in your spare time?
My friends and I love to go to the mall whenever we spend the weekend together. We spend WAY too much money!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’ve struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember. Freshman year it became so bad that I had to go on medication. It took me a while to be okay with the fact that I needed medicine in order to act like everybody else. Since then, I’ve learned to be grateful for the opportunity to be on meds, and I’ve used my anxiety to push me further in life.

What else would you like to talk about?
My struggles with arthritis. Also my struggles with body image.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
How body shaming comes in many different forms.

Peyton Fisher

Picture

Peyton Fisher – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Laura Esposito Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Peyton inspired me as her photographer with her bright smile that drew me in to see her generous heart and dedication to service. She is involved in her church's Children's Ministry. At school, she is a varsity cheerleader, choir member, and the secretary for the National Honor Society. She also worked the last two summers at her church camp. This past year, she was a Day Camp Counselor. Peyton has been accepted to Cedarville University where she will be majoring in psychology with a minor in biblical counseling to pursue her ultimate goal of becoming a Christian psychologist.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am also involved in Tri-M, an honors fine arts team that organizes service projects and works with younger music classes. This year, I have become part of a discipleship group at my church to prepare me for mentoring youth and my peers. Additionally, I have committed to go on two mission trips this summer (Nicaragua and Ireland) to serve and witness to people and cultures from other parts of the world.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would love to talk about my major. Since I was younger, my desire for my future was to use my career for the benefit of others. With psychology, I can explore different areas of people groups that I would absolutely love to play a part in helping, including domestic abuse survivors, autistic children, and those in addiction recovery.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present about the effects of PTSD. My family has recently undergone a tragic incident that left some imprints of trauma on each of us. Until now, I had never truly seen how PTSD can affect individuals and families. Since I am going into psychology, PTSD is a disorder in which I am very passionate about and one in which I would love to explore further.

Hope Boer

Picture

Hope Boer – California
Nomination & Photography by JAM Photography Studio
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Hope is a fun-loving, energetic young lady who is involved with many extracurricular activities. She's the leader of the Voices of the Pack choir's soprano section, a member of the all-girls robotic team, and an Ohana Nani Nui dancer at her high school. Outside of school, she's a member of her church's choir and assists with Sunday School. Hope loves math and science and plans to study Environmental Engineering in college. I know Hope is going to do amazing things in life. It's been a pleasure to watch her grow into a fantastic young lady.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Another inspiring thing about me is my love for music. I have been a part of musical theater for nine years, taken dance and voice lessons, and been involved in my school's choir for four years. Music has been a huge passion of mine and I plan to continue to incorporate it into my life, whether that be as a career or recreation.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about my wonderful family; my mom, dad, brother, and two cats. These people, and animals, have shaped me into the person I am today and I love them with my whole heart. My parents have taught me to try my best in everything I do and encouraged me to work hard to achieve my goals. My brother is my best friend and has continuously brought joy to my life when I needed it most. I love them dearly!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
As someone who loves jump scares and suspense, I could talk about horror movies forever. Ranging from ghost documentaries to psychological thrillers, I love analyzing the thematic elements and plot lines of movies. I am intrigued by my peers' ideas and analysis of the same movies and how we can produce different ideas from watching the same story.

Ava Shields

3/8/2023

Picture

Ava Shields – Florida
Nomination & Photography by Kristina Lynn Photography & Design
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ava is an inspiring teen because she’s a very smart individual who really works hard and has a big heart. This past year, she worked with her school counselors to create a modified schedule so that she could work in an internship at a nearby elementary school. She takes 5 classes in the morning, then spends the remainder of her day student teaching at the elementary school. She helps create lesson plans and works one-on-one in 5th grade and kindergarten classrooms. Very inspiring to see her giving back and helping others grow!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In addition to student teaching, I coach cheerleading at Incarnation Catholic School. I have a passion for competitive cheerleading that began when I was the age of the kids I work with now. Working with kids is something that I truly enjoy and I love to see the excitement on their faces when they master a new skill. It is so wonderful to be able to share my passion with a younger generation and be a role model for them.

What else would you like to talk about?
My greatest joy in life comes from human connection. I value quality time with the people in my life, and care deeply for the people around me. I love to talk to people and hear about their life experiences. It is important to me to be exposed to different kinds of people because
I love to learn from them. I hope to one day travel to many different places so I can learn about the world from others. I like to hear different perspectives and ideas. I feel that many of the conflicts in the world stem from a lack of communication, and I think everyone would benefit from honest and authentic conversation.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I work first hand with a group of elementary school teachers, and I see the way they pour their heart and soul into the children. They work overtime to ensure that their students are cared for. The teachers I work with inspire me to be a better individual and encourage me to find something in my life that I am passionate about. I feel that teachers are often seen as an afterthought and do not get the recognition and appreciation they deserve. Teachers are truly the backbone of our society, and I feel that they should be celebrated and compensated accordingly.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
If I had to present a topic to a group of peers it would be about the importance of reading. Reading brings me joy, new vocabulary, and to places I have never been.

What is your favorite book that you would recommend to someone else who also enjoys reading murder mystery books?
My favorite book and one I would recommend to others to read is, “To Catch A Killer”.

Christine has been photographing me since I was five in my first performance of the Nutcracker. She does amazing work and always makes me look my best.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
For this session my mom requested a Halloween session since this was my Halloween costume. Christine picked a beautiful old house downtown to shoot in front of. It was a lot of fun. My favorite part of the session was seeing what creative poses she came up with.

When did you start playing the violin and how much time do you spend practicing? Where is your favorite place to practice and why?
I started playing violin a year and a half ago. I admittedly don’t practice as much as I should. I try to practice a couple times a week. I decided to play the violin so my brother and I would have something to do together. When I do practice it is at home with my brother. He has been playing for 6 years.

Do you have a favorite go to song when others ask you to play, and/or favorite song you like to play for yourself?
One of my favorites songs played is, “Mary had a little lamb”. I think its one of my favorites because it reminds me of when my mom would sing it to me.
What was your favorite performance like? My favorite Performance was fun and scary at the same time.

Tell us about your horseback riding. How long have you been doing it, how did you get started, and what do you love most about it?
I have been riding for three years. I started during Covid. Being behind a computer all day was really bumming me out. I missed dancing in the studio, school, and life. My mom thought I would enjoy getting out of the house for this, she was right. My favorite part of riding is that I can build a bond with an animal so big, and get them to trust me and I trust them.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering as a teacher's assistant at your dance studio?
The thing I find most rewarding about volunteering as a teacher’s assistant is making an impact on kids and the dancing journey. I am also teaching them about something I love in hopes they will love it as much.

What do you wish non dancers knew about dancing?
I wish they would know dancing is a lot harder than it looks, and it takes a lot of training and hard work.

What class will you be teaching in the near future and what has you most excited about?
I will be teaching the 9-12 tap class in the future. I am most excited about them being close to my age and easy to teach. They also like a new challenge with new steps.

My favorite accomplishment in dance was going En Pointe. I love it!

Annabelle Boylen – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Radalia Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Annabelle is the most unassuming beautiful young women I’ve ever met. She’s gorgeous but that is just a bonus to what a wonderful, sweet soul that she is. She is extremely goal oriented, giving, kind and passionate. Annabelle has actually met all of her graduating requirements , and she is working the other half of her school year. She’s a huge mental health advocate, honor roll student, life guard and pet sitter. You feel that she is wise beyond her years when you are with her.

1. Being the youngest out of four children, and having three older brothers, i always felt the need to keep up. my brothers and parents have always encouraged me to do the best that i can at everything. this made me want to pursue early graduation, as well as wanting to start my journey of nursing school early.
2. While others were enjoying their summer, i was focused on my schooling to ensure my early graduation. I knew i had to be strict within myself, and at times, especially in the summer, it was challenging to overcome those obstacles. i thought hard about what i wanted my senior year to look like, as i set this goal my freshman year, and it’s not to say this was not challenging.
3. Some days i balanced my work load well, while other days were tough. I recognized the days i was struggling, i was able to take time to reflect on my studies as well as my own mental health. i’m lucky enough to have the right people around that support me to get me through the most challenging days.
4. The friendships that i’ve made over the course of my high school career have been relationships that i’ll cherish forever. going into school and having that group of people surrounding me would get me through the toughest days.
5. Nursing school, I’ve always wanted to follow in my dads footsteps.
6. She was recommended to me by multiple people. after viewing her website we loved her photos, and creativity for each client.
7. I’m a naturally shy person, however, upon meeting her she made me feel more comfortable as the session went on.
8. There’s a lot of different personalities out there, although some can be challenging, it taught me to accept everyone how they are.
9. As far as i can remember, i’ve always loved swimming. i was a competitive swimmer growing up, and i’ve always loved helping people. lifeguarding was a way for me to express that.
10. Struggling with my own mental health, i’ve learned ways to help others in need after having my own struggles. having gone through anxiety and depression, it’s been easy for me to understand how people feel during these difficult situations. what i know now from this experience, mental health issues can effect anyone.
11. I’ve always had a love for animals. We had dogs, cats, and even a little squirrel named Clementine. the fact that i get paid to hangout with animals has been everything i can dream of.
12. I have so many great memories, but i always enjoyed teaching the dogs tricks and seeing the happiness on their owners face.
13. I’m determined to accomplish my goals. From the start of schooling, i had teachers who didn’t believe in me. this drove me to work harder than my classmates, as well as think about what career i wanted to pursue. while doubt can defeat others, i’ve used it as a motivator in my life.

Morgann Savage

Picture

Morgann Savage – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Amy Honea Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Morgann Savage is a beautiful girl and has a tremendous heart. She has morals and does not follow the crowd. Morgann knows right from wrong and is not swayed by popular opinion. When Morgann is not helping her elderly grandparents, she is working in an after-school program tutoring and monitoring various activities with the students. Morgann also has a 4.0 GPA and is involved in school activities. Her focus is the National Honors Society and the Beta Club. Another important part of her education is volunteering at the hospital two days a week.

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

What do you love most about spending time with your grandparents?
I love making new memories with my grandparents, bringing a smile to their faces, and sitting down with them having multiple conversations. During the time I spend with them we talk about anything and everything. The conversations with my grandparents are so easy. They have so much wisdom to share.

What lessons have you learned from them?
Some of the lessons I have learned from my grandparents are that it is okay to make mistakes, no one is perfect. Another lesson I have learned from my grandfather involving soccer was to never give up and give 110% at practice as well as games.

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Amy Honea Photography for your photographer?
I found Amy Honea Photography through my older friends and Instagram. My older friends highly recommended her. I wanted her to take my photos since I was a freshman in high school. I chose Amy Honea Photography to capture my senior year because I loved how her pictures turned out. Also, after doing research on my own about her team I loved the benefits I would receive.

What made you want to join her team?
I have participated in many sports and extracurricular activities, but never modeling. At the very beginning I was extremely nervous. This is something I have never done before, but what previous team members have said about this experience pushed me out of my comfort zone. I wanted to join her team to gain new friendships, become confident in front of others, and to feel like a real model.

What has your experience been like in terms of locations and adventures? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Mrs. Honea through locations and adventures have been some of the best memories of my senior year. The locations have been beautiful and different in their own ways. For the waterfall shoot, I had to climb rocks, walk through a tiny path, and slip on the way down. When I reached the water, it was slippery, and I slipped but thankfully caught myself. I loved how Mrs. Honea was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the challenges that would come with each shoot.

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

What is the best part of working at an after-school program? What is the hardest part?
The best part of working at an after-school program is to be involved with the children. I get to help them with anything they need, support them, and remind them that it is okay to make mistakes. The hardest part is trying to get the children under control after a long day of school.

What activities do you love doing with the kids the most?
I love assisting the kids with arts and crafts, playing with them when they are outside, and helping them with their homework. I also love watching them grow from the beginning of the school year to the end.

Why is it important to you to have a 4.0?
It is important for me to have a 4.0 GPA because it shows how hard I work and study. I have worked hard for several years to earn a 4.0. When I saw I earned a 4.0, I gained a lot of confidence in myself, and that GPA showed me I can do anything I want to do if I set my mind to it.

What has been your favorite service project with the NHS?
My favorite service project with the National Honors Society is creating Christmas cards for the hospital. This has been my favorite service project because I know those people in the hospital wish they were home and with family during the holidays. My clinical experience at the hospital has allowed me to see some lonely, elderly patients. I wanted to make several different cards because I wanted whoever received it to know it gets better and I hope it put a smile on their face.

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

What activity do you enjoy most in Beta Club?

I enjoy attending the meetings and learning about little projects Beta Club has going on around the school and the community. Some past projects have included food drives, clothing drives, Valentine Candygrams, and cleaning the stadium after games.

What do you do when you volunteer at the hospital two days a week?
I am in a high school clinical class and at the end of the year, I have a chance to become a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant). Every three to four weeks we rotate to a new location of the hospital. I have taken patients vital signs, seen the birth of a newborn baby, wrapped a wound, and got materials for nurses and the patients.

Why do you find this rewarding?
This experience at the hospital is extremely rewarding because it shows me that I am so blessed to be healthy. Also, helping patients during this terrible time in their life is beneficial because sometimes the nurses, doctors, and I are the only people the patients see. I want to have a substantial impact on someone's day and life through this difficult journey.

What is a favorite memory with your soccer team?
My favorite memory with my soccer team was my freshman year of high school when my team and I were coming back from winning an away game. On the way back, we all stopped at Popeyes, and they have this sauce called Sweet Heat sauce. We had to eat the food on the bus, so my friend opened that sauce, and it exploded all over her and the bus. The Sweet Heat sauce stinks and is very sticky. I was laughing so hard I was crying. It took us about an hour to clean up the mess and we were still sticky.

Nyla Haynie – California
Nomination & Photography by Alicia Crosson Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: It is my pleasure to nominate Nyla Haynie! Since 2021, she has been a prime participant in my spokesmodel program, earning the award of ACP Model of the Year last year. Nyla is also a competitive dancer, is on her high school’s tennis team, and plays multiple instruments. She has a passion for writing, using this to achieve multiple awards for Speech and Debate, all while flourishing academically. She is active in her church’s ministry, and loves being involved in charity work both locally and on mission trips! Nyla’s kindness towards others is matched with her dedication, loyalty and faithfulness.

Picture
Photography by Alicia Crosson Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I love volunteering to serve others as well. Helping people makes me happy, so I've loved making sack lunches for our homeless community, and going on a mission with my church. Last October, I was blessed with the opportunity to travel to a village in Mexico, where I taught and looked after local children, and helped build a roof for a pastor's home. I'm also headed to Camp Barnabas, a week-long ministry for campers with special needs or chronic illnesses, and I was proud to be a buddy at Night to Shine, a prom-style dance for special needs guests.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to express the importance and excitement brought by leaving your comfort zone. Seizing opportunities like mission trips, or just trying to do something new and little is so exciting, and maybe even life-changing! I want to encourage others that everyone in this magazine has taken a little step, or a leap, that brought them to where they are. We should encourage others, and ourselves to do the same. Lastly, it doesn't take a million medals to be inspiring, just a little smile or compliment can inspire someone. Spread kindness!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Growing up, I have a constant feeling that my childhood is slipping away. I find comfort in the constants of my life; my busy routine, my city, and the people I’ve grown up with. Now college is approaching, and soon I have to leave everything I love. I’m terrified to be entirely on my own and decide what my path is. I know I’m not alone in my fear of change, so I want to advocate that it’s okay to be anxious about the future, and that things will turn out just the way that they are meant to.

How did you find and why did you choose Alicia Crosson Photography for your photographer?
She has been such an amazing part of so many young girls' lives, and a lot of the girls she has impacted and inspired I know well through dance or tennis.

What has your experience been like on her team?
She has been the absolute sweetest these last couple of years. She is so open to creativity and individuality in her photoshoots, and I love that she encourages us to express ourselves in our clothing choices and themes. Every one of her spokesmodels is so supportive and loving toward one another, which is a perfect team dynamic.

How did you earn the award of ACP Model of the Year last year and what did it mean to you to win?
Alicia's company is all about supporting one another and loving each other, and I think that I won because of just that. I love to compliment the other girls and build them up for their beautiful photos, and I connect easily with others. It meant the absolute world to me to win, because it just proves that a little kindness and support is never little, even if it seems to go unnoticed.

What things about dance do you love the most?
I adore the way that dance connects people. The way that you can feel someone's emotions through their movement, be it excited, anxious, or heartbroken; it's contagious. I think it's extremely beautiful to watch and so much fun to perform. I also absolutely love the friends I've made through dance, and the memories we've made practicing and competing together :)

What has been a favorite memory from tennis?

I am so blessed to have such a sweet and inclusive coach, and she's created so many amazing memories. She always made us yummy little quinoa bowls and juice before our matches and gave little pep talks. When a little boy in our town was battling cancer, she inspired the whole team to go to his house to cheer him up and make him feel special. One of my teammates dressed as our school mascot, and my friend and I were asked to play a Star Wars song on our violins for him, which was such a special memory.

What instruments do you play and how long have you been playing?
I play the violin and the flute, and I've been playing them both for around 7 years.

What is your favorite go-to crowd-pleasing song when people ask you to play?
When people ask me to play for them it's usually around Christmas time, when my family visits and wants to hear me play. I have an entire binder dedicated to Christmas songs, and I have them pick their favorites for me to play. We also have a group of families that go Christmas caroling to the homes of struggling families, and they always request songs like "Joy to the World", "Jingle Bells", and "Silent Night," which is super fun.
Why do you love to write?
I find so much comfort in my writing, watching as letters turn into words, and words into sentences, then pages. Words and thoughts that I didn't understand before I could take a step back and see parts of myself that go unseen unless on paper. I love having the ability to make others feel something with my writing, and make them think in a different way. I've watched them laugh or cry, or both, and it's the most beautiful and rewarding thing in the world.

What has been the most rewarding speech you've won?
Every speech I've written has been extremely close to my heart. I won my first competition with a speech inspired by my mixed-race family, focusing on aspects of racial stereotypes that go undiscussed. I was proud to speak about my heritage, even when others thought it didn't belong to me. I won my second with another original, about the struggles of change and growing up that are often invalidated. It was empowering to speak about things that mattered to me and connected me to the people that inspired them. The biggest reward was seeing others inspired by them too.

Why is religion important to you?
I see God in everything. I see Him in the warm little sun spots from windows, I see Him in sunflowers on the highway. I see Him in colorful striped sweaters and the lyrics of my favorite songs. I see Him when I see a person and a dog equally excited to see each other. I see Him when I see love and joy, I see his comfort in pain and sadness. I see Him in everything, and this love and hope saved my life. Jesus saved you, and He loves you! You are never alone :)

She is a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Wilson Society, and is president of the Baking Club. She is also on the bowling and tennis team at school. What activity in Wilson Society has been your favorite?
My favorite Wilson Society activity is the Red Tubs project. This project involves students bringing gifts, toys, and clothes for specific children. The gifts are put together in large red tubs and delivered to the children. This year, our school chose 6 individuals to provide Christmas gifts to. The project benefits foster families in the Memphis area. I enjoyed this project because I got to give back to my community and I enjoyed the personal aspect of it: knowing that the gifts would be useful and appreciated by the families.

How have the service projects impacted the community?
The service projects that I have participated in have impacted the community by reaching less privileged people and spreading the word of Christ.

What duties does being the president of the Baking Club entail?
The Baking Club hosts bake sales at school almost every month. At the end of the year, the proceeds that we have collected will go to the Veterans Affairs Center in Memphis. Our monthly sales involve members of the club signing up to bring in baked goods which are then sold to students during school.

What is your best leadership quality?
In my opinion, my best leadership quality is being inclusive. I prioritize allowing everyone's voice to be heard and making sure that everyone has the opportunity to express their opinions and ideas.

Tell us about your bowling team and a favorite memory with them.
My favorite memory from bowling was making new friends and getting close with my coach! Being on the team allowed me to get closer with people that I didn’t have the opportunity to be around before. The team bond was really special and we were able to have lots of fun at practices and during matches.

What has your tennis career been like? When did you get started and where are you at with it now?

For me, tennis started as a fun, family activity with all my siblings and I taking lessons together. Once I entered high school, I was eager to get involved and picked up tennis again. I played on junior varsity freshman year, and on the varsity sophomore, junior and senior year. I enjoy practicing, being outside and being active, and being able to be part of a team. As my senior season begins, I am excited to build relationships with the underclassmen on the team, help win team matches, and hopefully have a lasting impact as I prepare to leave.

What do you do when you volunteer at the homeless shelter?
My family and I put together gift bags full of necessary items. We go down to the shelter and help serve a meal to all the men. After dinner is served my dad does a service for them, the service involves music by a local band and a sermon and spiritual invitation from my dad. When the service ends, we pass out the gift bags to each person and assist in cleaning up.

In what ways do you share your love for Jesus?
I share my love for Jesus by participating in the activities that are offered at my school. This year, I have had the opportunity to be a discipleship group leader. Me and my co-leader were assigned a group of freshmen to grow with spiritually. We meet with our girls monthly for bible studies.

How would your friends describe you?
My friends describe me as caring, kind, fun, friendly and hard-working.

What is your favorite activity to do with the kids you babysit?
Two of my favorite things to do with the kids I babysit is take them out to get ice cream. Going out to get ice cream is fun because we get to get out of the house and hearing the music they chose to play in the car is always amusing.

Tell us about your academics.
Academics have always been important to me. I strive to do my best and keep good grades. Each year of high school I have been on the academic honor roll. Sophomore, junior, and senior year, I have received the Joseph A. Clayton award for being in the top 20% of my class based on GPA. I challenge myself with the classes that I take, including honors, AP and dual enrollment courses. I was just named top 20 of my class with a GPA of 5.007.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

My nomination does not cover my determination and success in school. I push myself to do the best I can; this means challenging myself by taking honors, AP and dual enrollment classes. I have received an award two years in a row for being in the top 20% of students in my class based on GPA. I am also part of a program at my school that pairs seniors with underclassmen to regularly do bible studies together. I love having the opportunity to form relationships with the younger girls and grow closer to the Lord with them.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present Jesus's love for everyone. I would present on Jesus' love because I have seen the effects of Jesus in my life and want everyone to fully experience His love, grace, and mercy and help them to accept the free gift of salvation that He offers. I am passionate about this topic because Jesus’s love is unconditional; His love makes me feel worthy and seen and I want others to be able to experience it as well. I want God to use me to bring more people to Him. Presenting on His son’s love would help spread the joyful message.

How did you find and why did you choose Cindy B. Thymius Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom had seen several publications with Cindy’s work featured and chose her to be our photographer for family photos three years ago. When she announced the traveling dress shoot, we immediately took hold of the opportunity. She is an amazing photographer, and the shoots are always fun and turn out great.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would encourage them to get involved in anything and everything possible. I would also say try your best at everything you do even if you think it is insignificant, you never know what opportunities could arise.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I hope to have graduated college and be working as an interior designer. I plan to go to Mississippi State University in the fall and major in interior design.

3 Things on your bucket list
The top three things on my bucket list are going to a Super Bowl, seeing the northern lights, and visiting Santorini Greece.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
It is hard for me to see how I inspire others so I asked a few of my peers. In short, I inspire others to be better by always staying positive and looking at the bright side of life. I always say perspective is key and that is an encouraging thing for me and others.

She is excelling in her Senior year of high-school with a 4.0 GPA while holding down a job, competing in her 4th year of FFA with her steer and being a loving big sister to her younger siblings. She will be a blessing to anyone she has the opportunity of working with once she completes her tech school adventures.

Why is having a 4.0 important to you?
Having a 4.0 is important to me because colleges see me as a successful student who is determined to be structured for my future. I want to be seen as someone who has high standards rather than lower ones.

How do you balance a high GPA with a job and social life?
I balance a high GPA, a job, and a social life by taking the time that is needed to accomplish my goals in school and keep good grades, while working to be an independent young lady. I keep focus on school, so I don’t have too much homework and stress about work. When I’m not focusing on either one, I like to hang out with friends and family!

Tell us about your job and what you've learned about the general public as a result.
At my job, In-N-Out Burger, I have many different skills and jobs that I use on the daily. I do anything from preparing produce for the day, managing money, frying potatoes that are made into fries, handing out the final product and taking orders from customers. I have learned that the general public are often kind although some can be challenging and I’ve learned the skills to handle those stressful situations with grace.

What do you love most about showing your steer through FFA.
Ultimately, I love the whole process that comes with raising a market steer. From the time I get to pick him out, to the time I sell him at the county fair, both my steer and I learn valuable steps in the raising process that with help me in the long run!

Tell us about your steer and your relationship with him.
This year’s steer is named Blu aka “Blu’s Clues.” He is currently a 900 pound Club Calf with a spontaneous personality! He has blue eyes, extremely long white eyelashes, and is mostly black with white around his eyes that make him look like a panda. My relationship with Blu is like a parent and child relationship. I teach him what there is to know about performing at fair in front of judges!

Picture
Photography by Olivia Quinn Photography

What is your daily routine with him like?

My daily routine with Blu starts at 6 am! I feed him about 15 pounds of grain and 1 flake of grain hay. I give lots of love before I head to school. When I get home later in the day, I take him for a mile walk everyday so he can stretch his legs and gain muscle. When it’s not too cold outside, he gets a bath with soap and water, as well as conditioner. He gets brushed daily, and after our “chores,” he gets fed at 6pm and goes to bed at around 9pm.

What has your experience in FFA been like?
My experience in FFA has been lots of fun but very challenging as well. I enjoy watching my steer grow up and mature into a show steer. My FFA meetings that I am required to attend are difficult to balance because of my job and I often am reminded that they are important and I am needed there.

What has your favorite accomplishment in FFA been?
I have many favorite accomplishments and awards that I have received throughout my 4 years, and I cannot pick just one. My first year in FFA, I won the Market Steer Carcass Contest, receiving a handmade belt buckle from the Montana SilverSmith Company. My second year, I was awarded Reserve Grand Champion out of 87 steers at the fair! My third year, I won first place in my class and was 6th in the Carcass Contest.

How has it made you into the person you are today?
Raising a market steer and receiving all types of awards and prizes has made me more confident in who I am and how I see myself! I have learned many things including the value of companionship and the effort that is needed to raise an animal for slaughter.

How did you find and why did you choose Olivia Quinn Photography for your photographer?
My photographer, Amy Lopez, has been a friend of my mother’s for 6 years! She took the maternity pictures for my aunt, and they’ve always kept in touch! She ended up moving to South Carolina a few years back and comes back to California ever so often to visit family and friends. We scheduled a date when she would be in town for one of her visits and had my senior photo shoot!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Amy was was lots of fun, and it was a very lively experience! From the bamboo and trees, the “Love” mural downtown, the train station to climbing “Money Face Mountain” in Upper Bidwell Park, I had an amazing time and will cherish this day forever!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Overall, I see myself as a highly respectful person who only wants the best for everyone. I love to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and will always do so. I have recently applied to become a volunteer at the Haven Humane Adoption Center, and I hope to care for these animals and assist in their possible adoptions!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Overall, I love to talk so I honestly could talk about anything! One thing I do love to talk about is my future. I would like to go to Shasta Community College and go to school to get my general education, and then transfer to Sacramento State for their sonography program to become an ultra sound technician!

What made you decide to become an Ultrasound Technician?
I decided I wanted to be an Ultra Sound Technician because I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field, that wasn’t too overwhelming and physically traumatic, as well as being able to help patients with their needs. I would like to specialize in baby sonography over any others!

Haley Holzworth – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by Moments in Time by Kimberly Krueger
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: I am Haley Holzworth, and I am inspiring teen because I have overcome many challenges in life. My mom pretty much exited my life when I was 8 years old and I have learned to grow up without a mother, but have many mom figures in my life who have helped me grow, as well as my amazing dad, who has raised my brother and I on his own. I have overcome stressors in life, an abusive relationship, and losing many friends in the process by staying positive and living for the little things and moments in life.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. Where do you stand out?

I live with my amazing dad and brother. Over the years when have gone through experiences that have, in a way, brought us closer together. A little fun fact is that my dad and brother are both named Rusty, so that is one place I stand out. However, one place I do fit in is that I am very passionate. It could be something as little as spear mint gum to something as important as colorguard. I stand out because I am the only girl in the house. I find it crazy that they only have a single product in the shower!

What has been a favorite fun family memory you will never forget?
A family memory I will never forget was when my dad took my brother and I on a weekend trip to Michigan. I had this idea in the back of my mind to dig the biggest hole in the sand at the lake that I possibly could. We went into multiple stores just so I could find the perfect shovel. I made sure no bothered us that entire day due to me flinging sand everywhere. A core memory for sure.

What family tradition do you have that you hope never ends?
At Christmas time every year we open some gifts early instead of waiting til Christmas. I nonstop bother my dad until he eventually caves in.

What sorts of things do you and your brother like to do together?
Every couple months my brother and I go on a sibling day date. It’s normally includes getting taco bell and watching a movie together. We also frequently have dance parties in my bedroom!

How is time spent with you and your dad?
Recently the time I have seen my dad the most was during musical rehearsal. He is a huge help with our set pieces and is constantly buying something for us. On the other hand we like to spend time watching Greys Anatomy in pajamas when we are not super busy.

How did you find and why did you choose Moments in Time by Kimberly Krueger for your photographer?
I was scrolling on instagram one day and saw some really cool images of a girl I knew. I wanted to look like her so bad and I messaged Kim. It was already halfway through the season with her but she decided I could shoot with her girls. I continued to shoot with Kim because she felt so welcoming. She laughed at my jokes and even called me beautiful. I needed a way to see myself as funny and beautiful and Kim’s team made that possible!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience has been eye opening. I am friends with people I would not have talked to in the past and even closer with people who I have known for some time. I love that it feels okay to be me when I am there. We can all be judge-mental at times but never when shooting with Kim. It is a wonderful thing that I think ever young person should go through. It gave me back my spark!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am the stage manager at Martinsville Highschool so being a leader is a thing I do constantly. I am open to a good challenge and pride myself on being brave and positive. That is how I got the job for our fall musical last year!

What made you want to be a stage manager?
I had originally auditioned for the musical and did not even know it was a possibility for me to be the stage manager. I got called down to our directors’ office during school and he blatantly told me I did not make the cast. He thought I had a great voice but saw that I was very organized and had a big question for me. He asked if I would be interested in being the student director for the fall musical. I had no clue what that was and was honestly curious what it could be. He explained that it was a big job in the theatre department. I would take blocking notes for everyone and call the entire show. I am a natural born leader, but my dad just calls me bossy. I wanted to go for this because I am always down for a challenge, and it was something I had never done before.

What do you love most about this job?
I love that I get to understand more about people and help in every aspect of the show. I try to help everyone in our stage/tech crew as much as I can. It is a wonderful feeling seeing people do what they love and watching those kids smile so rewarding!

What type of leader are you?
I am a compassionate leader. I always try to help the people that are struggling and try to understand what is going on.

Picture
Photography by Moments in Time by Kimberly Krueger

What is your strongest leadership quality?

I find myself to be rather persistent at times. It makes makes me a little mad to see people not improving when they can so I make it a point to get the job done.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have been doing color guard since the 6th grade so I have lots of memories with it. It has taught me to be confident in myself and to push through hard times. Color Guard is actually how I met three of my closest friends.

What is something you think people who don't participate in color guard need know about?
We put in tons of work. We operate like anything other sport. We have set rehearsal days and are required to do certain workouts. We have to be strong to get more rotations out of a toss. We do more than just throwing things in the air, we dance, we go to competitions, and best of all we get to learn tons of new things and meet a lot of people.

What are your friends like and what is something you always do together?
My friends are very outgoing people and we love going hiking together when we can. My boyfriend even surprised me once when coming home from college. He planned an entire trip all for me with my closest friend and him at our favorite park!

How would your friends describe you?
I think my friends would describe me and fun and caring. We love to laugh, and we always have a good time together.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Trying new things and giving it my all! I am always up to trying most things once! Plus, I am obsessed with Lightning McQueen, I even have a shrine of the cars movies in my bedroom.

Who do you find inspiring?
My dad is the strongest and caring person that I know. He inspires me every day to reach my fullest potential because you never know who is watching.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring to other because I just love the little things in life. It’s nice to see people thank me for being so excited over the smallest things!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Everyday has it challenges but do not give up. Giving it your all is shows you can do anything!

Jaelynn Gyger - New Mexico
Nomination & Photography by Aimee Gonzales Photography
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jaelynn Gyger is inspiring because she has used her past experiences to help others. Her father passed away unexpectedly last year, and she has lived every day to the fullest while making a point to help others. She is one of the senior cheer captains in the Volcano Vista Cheer squad and gives her time to the community through teaching Sunday school at Sagebrush Church. She always has a smile on her face, a word of encouragement for her peers and shares her faith in the Lord though all she does. Everyone around her is touched by her kindness and is inspired by her generosity. Jaelynn will not let her past experience defy her future and she plans to become a teacher after college which will allow her to be a mentor and support for other students that will face similar experiences as she has gone through.

Tell us about your cheer career. When did you get started and where are you with it now?

I started in gymnastics at a young age I feel in love with it, and that is how I got my tumbling skills. However, over time it got to be too time consuming, and it was a lot on my body so I quit. Right before I started high school, I decided to try out for the cheer team, even though I have never done cheer or anything like it before. I then made the JV cheer team, and I loved it! Going from an individual sport to a team sport was so much fun. I loved my team and had learned so much from it. My next year I had made varsity and got to learn even more. Now that it is my senior year, I am planning to try out for the cheer team at my college.

What does it mean to you to be a cheer captain?
I find the way my school dose cheer captains unique as we have all the seniors on the team be captions. This helps us as we get to make lots of decisions as a team, and you get to hear what others think, as well as their ideas. At my school our colors are black, platinum, and white so we like to have a accent color that the seniors get to choose every year. We also do bigs and littles on our team which really helps us get to know other, and help others get out of their shell and feel welcome on our team.

What have you learned about yourself being in this role?
Being in this role has helped me grow a lot as a person. It has made me notice how people take criticism differently and how to relay criticism to them. I have also learned that you should still praise others when they do something good, so there is a nice balance. Knowing this has helped me communicate to my team in a positive and effective way to help them. I have also been able to use this skill in other places not just cheer.

What is your best leadership quality?
In my opinion I would say my best leadership quality is that I am able to listen to others and do things their way as well. To have leadership you need people to want to follow and listen to you well. Others aren't going to want to do that if you aren't willing to listen to and do thing their way as well.

What is your favorite part of teaching Sunday School?
The best part of teaching Sunday school would be the impact I have on my kids. Every week they have a mission. This is something we want them to do throughout the week. It can be as easy of reading their bible and draw a picture of what they read, or to find a way they can help someone out in their everyday life then draw a picture of that. If they do that then in return they will get a prize but its more than just the prize it that they really took what we had talked about that weekend and tried to put it in their everyday life.

What surprises you about kids these days?
These days I feel like kids are really technology driven as I can look around my classroom almost every kid will be on their phone. If you look at a group of kids hanging out in public more than likely they will be on their phones.

Why do you want to become a teacher?
I wanna become a teacher because I feel like growth starts at a young age and i wanna be able to help with that prosses. Kids can also be left behind and once they are behind or feel no welcome it’s hard to get them back on track so I wanna help keep the kids on track and give them the motivation to keep going

What are you most looking forward to in becoming a teacher?
The thing I'm looking forward to the most in becoming a teacher is to watch the kids that I have once taught grow up a become wonderful people and see where life takes them. I am also excited to see how I can help them get on that path.

What type of teacher do you intend on being?
I plan on doing elementary education but I will also look into getting my duel license, with that I will be able to teach whatever grade I want to do k-12. The reason I want to start with elementary is I feel like it would be a good stepping stone to what teaching is like and they also have to have a good foundation of learning so I want to be able to give them that foundation.

How has the loss of your dad impacted the way you live each day?
The loss of my dad was a unique situation. There were events that occurred that caused me to not see my biological dad (the one who passed away) in three years and I was adopted two years ago by Matt (my mother’s husband) They have been together since I was 5 and so I had been raised by both men. The adoption was open, and I always planned and hoped to mend the relationship with my biological father but that cannot happen now. So, I would say with anything from this loss is to not take time for granted. You never know what can happen and if you get an opportunity take it. But most importantly is to forgive others you can forgive but still have boundaries.

As a senior, what legacy do you hope to leave behind for younger classes?
When I started high school it got cut short my freshman and sophomore year because of Covid. So for me I didn't get to experience a lot of things till the past two years. So, I would wanna show the younger class that it’s okay to get out of your comfort zone and try new things we have all been there at one point as well.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you and what would you be doing?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it I would be sitting by my pool tanning. I love summer and all things that come with it. Just relaxing in the sun and doing nothing.

How did you find and why did you choose Aimee Gonzales Photography for your photographer?
Aimee is actually by boyfriends mother. But she is more than that. She has become a caring and sweet person in my life. I chose her to do my photos because I feel like she really know me and how to capture my true self. I really believe she did that.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
It was really fun and relaxed I think the thing I loved most about it was all the props we had from my cheer career.

Piper Long – Alabama
Nomination by Kimberly Lowhorn
Photography by Lauren Beesley
Issue 65 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Piper long is an inspiration because of her hard work and dedication in every area of her life. She spent her summer as a swim coach, teaching little ones her love of swimming while teaching them how to swim. Piper gets up early in the morning to life guard before she goes to school. Comes home from school and has swim practice and life guards again. Piper wants to be a veterinarian and has recently taken another job at a veterinarian clinic on some nights and every weekend, for experience. When most teens these days are more worried about the next iPhone or boyfriend, she is steadily working toward her goals as a future veterinarian. Piper has done well in swimming for her high school and would continue into college with swimming if she did not want to devote every moment now into being a veterinarian.

What is the best thing about swimming, and what is the hardest thing about swimming?
The best thing about swimming is seeing all the hard work you’ve done play out. It is such an incredible feeling to see all the hours you’ve spent practicing pay off. The hardest thing for me about swimming is pushing through the mental block that comes with not doing well at a meet and feeling defeated.

When did you get started and what are your best events?
I started swimming in 2012 when I was 7 going on 8. My best events are the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle.

What is your favorite accomplishment with swimming?
My favorite accomplishment was at my sophomore year state meet when I placed top 5. It was very unexpected, and it just made me so happy.

What is your team like and where do you fit in?
My team is like my second family. We all cut up and joke around with each other. We all genuinely care about how each other does at meets. I would say my spot on the team is being the “comedian”. I try to make everyone laugh. I am one of the oldest on the team so I try and give advice when needed.

Where do you stand out?
I stand out in my ability to motivate others and to always try to make them laugh.

What made you want to become a veterinarian?
I have always had a love for animals, but it is not just because of that. I love that Veterinarians deal with all kinds of animals and that treating them is like a puzzle.

What is your role at the clinic and what do you love most about it?
At the clinic I am a veterinarian assistant/technician. I aid the doctor in treating animals. I give shots, run tests, and help restrain animals when needed. I love that I am getting hands on experience and that I learn something new every day.

What are you most excited to learn about in the world of vets?
I am most excited to learn about how an animal’s nutrition can play a huge part in their behavior and wellbeing. I am also looking forward to learning all about pathology and diseases.

Do you have an animal or animals?
I have a dog named Cash. He is a chocolate lab and German shorthair pointer mix.

What are your roles and responsibilities as VP of NGHS?
My role is to inspire others to pursue the path of learning German. It is also to organize German club events.

What have you learned about yourself as a leader, and what is your best leadership quality?
I have learned that it is best to ask others for their opinions and advice so you can try to make most of everyone happy. I would say my best leadership quality is my time management skills.

What is your favorite thing to do at FFA?
My favorite thing to do is to interact with others who are just as passionate about Agriculture as I am.

What is your favorite memory from FFA?
My favorite memory is when I competed with my CDE team at the state aquaculture competition.
