Karsen Kelley

Karsen Kelley – Pennsylvania
Nomination & Photography by Sherri Fox Photography
Issue 57 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: I've known Karsen since she was a little girl. Recently I had the privilege of watching Karsen as the maid of honor in her sister's wedding. Her speech was awe inspiring and I realized how much love she has for her family and others. She extends that love to others in her community where she volunteers. When she was little, she started her first business at age 5 selling lemonade and cupcakes. Her business name was sweet cheeks. Her sewing business she started at age 12. When she was 15, she had the opportunity to learn a new culture and lifestyle when her family moved to Thailand for 6 months. I am very proud of her and find her passion and love for life inspiring.

Tell us about your business adventures.
I began running my own “businesses” when I was just 5 years old. It began with lemonade stands, 25 cents a cup. Then I moved towards baking, selling cupcakes from my yard. When I entered elementary school, I started selling pencils and school supplies to my classmates using things I already owned. From the money I earned from this I purchased items to make custom crafts I had my classmates design, and I would make. In middle school I began sewing, which opened many opportunities for me. It's easy to say I was an entrepreneur since I was born!

What did you learn about yourself during your times in business?
I learned I’m not someone who can be happy with myself when I am sitting still. I have to keep moving up the ladder of life. Keep climbing and climbing until I reach my goals, which is what I have been trying to do for as long as I can. The only issue with this is the farther up I climb the bigger my dreams become!

What was the hardest thing about setting up shop and how did you get around it to still have fun and keep going?
It’s important to find a balance in all things in life, even outside of business. You have to find a good routine that allows you time for work and for fun. Making sure you are still working but not becoming physically or emotionally exhausted from it. Keeping time for yourself helps make you enjoy what you do. And if you don’t love what you’re doing, what are you doing it for?

Are you in business now? What are you doing?
Right now I work for Starbucks which has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have met so many wonderful people. This company has so much room for growth which allows me to keep working and keep moving up. It is very fast paced which keeps me busy and happy.

If you could pick any business to own and run today, what would it be and why?
I am not completely sure right now. I am so passionate about so many things it is hard to choose! I have wanted to be a baker, a seamstress, a cosmetologist, a barista and so many more. All I know is whatever I choose to do in any field I want to make sure that my work touches the lives and hearts of people I come across. Whether that means cutting their hair, making their wedding dress or making them their favorite latte! It is important to me to pursue not only the happiness of me but the happiness of others, I believe this makes a successful business.

How did you find and why did you choose Sherri Fox Photography for your senior photographer?
Sherri Yon has been a wonderful friend to me and my family for as long as I can remember. She has such a warm personality that helps people feel at ease. Senior pictures can be stressful, so I trusted her to help ease that stress, which she did. In some of my pictures I'm laughing from having so much fun!

What was your planning and photoshoot experience like? What did you love most about it?
Planning was very easy; Sherri has amazing quality photos that were worth the trip to Virginia! The shoot was fun and enjoyable, most moments I forgot why I was even there. I think what I loved most about the experience is that I felt very comfortable and felt I had some control in what I was doing.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I feel passionate about making others happy. It has become a big part of my life and my own happiness. Wanting to help others has affected what I do for work and how I work. I chose a job where I would be able to connect with people and help bring some joy to their day. Even when I myself am having struggles I always feel my best when I am volunteering and making the best out of someone's day. I can truly say that my compassion for life and others has sculpted the way I live and think.

What else should we know about you?
When I was in sixth grade me and a few other classmates recognized an ongoing issue of pollution in our community, we began our research of what pollution was and how it affects the planet. Even as young as we were, we were all so passionate about the cause. We got sponsors and supplied our community with reusable bags and bottles. We made presentations about our research to teach others about how serious this issue is. We did everything we could to raise awareness for an issue we felt, and still feel is important to us. We held the event on World Ocean Day.

Is it something you could do every year to make a tradition in your community?
This was a tradition in our school for the sixth graders for many years and each year I would come support in any way I could. But sadly after I moved the teacher that helped us organize it retired and I’ve heard that the school no longer hosts this. But it would definitely be something I would be excited to teach others in hope we could start again!

What do you think the usage is now between plastic bags and reusable bags in your community?
I currently live in Pennsylvania and we still have plastic bags here. It makes me so sad when I see them in the street or in the gutters! My sister and brother in law live in New York and plastic bags have been banned there and replaced with reusable or paper. It is so nice to see stores taking action against this issue which is affecting all of us!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am honored by the nomination I have received, but I am afraid that the truly inspiring part of me is my family. I was given two wonderful parents who love me unconditionally. I have a sister who has been self driven since before I could walk, I’ve never met someone who could so confidently follow her own path. My brother is filled with adventure and love, he looks for the best in everyone. I alone am not inspiring, but I am the product of an inspiring family who loves me and paves my path as I reach my goals.

What are your favorite things to do with your siblings?
My sister and my brother are my best friends in the whole world, even when we fight over clothes I know that they are the people I will have forever. My favorite thing to do with them would either be taking car rides or our signature home alone night. Anytime us kids would have the house to ourselves my sister would take us to the store and we would get a chicken, and make mashed potatoes and green beans and have brownies for dessert. Then we would just watch movies together. But no matter what we are doing, nothing makes me happier than being with them.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
Every year my family holds something we call a treasure hunt. My parents always made it really fun and interactive. They would make a treasure map and hide clues around the house and yard. We would have to follow the map and clues and when we reached the end we would find gifts for us! We still do it to this day and this is the first year we get to have my brother in law join.

What are you most looking forward to doing this summer?
Sadly my brother is spending the summer in Germany. I am really excited for him but he is my best friend and I will miss him so much. I plan on spending lots of time with my sister and brother in law. But most of all I plan on spending time with my parents. They are truly amazing people and definitely the coolest people in the world. But this fall I start college and I will be very busy so I want to spend this summer making as many memories as I can with the people who love me the most.

Adriana Lane - Michigan
Nomination & Photography by Amanda Rider Photography
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Adriana always works hard for the things she wants and believes in. In school, she pushes herself with AP & honors classes, while maintaining a high GPA. Outside of school, she's a Varsity athlete and the starting Libero at Belleville High since freshman year. She is the starting Libero for the 17-1s team at Team Detroit Volleyball Club.
Adriana not only wants the best for herself, but everyone around her. She pushes her friends, family, teammates, and strangers to do so. Adriana's active in NHS and would offer anyone the shirt off of her own back, she is selfless and kind.
Photography by Amanda Rider Photography

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would love to be interviewed about anything sport related. I've learnt so much as I've grown up playing sports, and they've shaped me into who I am. Sports have provided me with many life lessons.
I also feel like relationships in life, no matter what kind, are so important to who you become. Every person you meet impacts you, whether they stay in your life or not. I feel like that's something important, and not many people realize it. I always try to be the best I can, so that if I impact someone, it's for the better.

Tell us about your volleyball career. How and when did you get started and what do you love most about it?
I started playing volleyball when I was 8 years old. I started by doing clinics and loved it, and then eventually started playing for teams. My favorite thing about playing is the relationships and life lessons you gain.

What is a favorite memory with your volleyball team?
A favorite memory I have from one of my past seasons was winning districts for Belleville Highschool. It was the first time that’s been done in a long time for the volleyball program, so it was cool to be a part of and know I helped get us there.

What is a big accomplishment for you within the sport?
A big accomplishment for me within the sport has been being able to play at a varsity level since my freshman year of high school. Each year since then I have also been lucky enough to be able to be the starting libero and earn All Conference, which is a pretty big deal to me. It makes me feel like the work I’ve put in has really started to pay off.

What have you learned growing up playing sports?
I’ve learnt a lot. The biggest thing though has been that having a team behind you makes the biggest difference. Without the teammates and coaches I’ve had, I would have nothing. Volleyball is a sport where you have to rely on each person apart of the team doing their job. T

What leadership opportunities have you had within sports?
Some of the leadership opportunities I’ve had have been being captain and co-captain for different teams I’ve been a part of. I’m also a libero, so in general with being that position you’re often the most vocal on the court. Whether you’re the actual team captain or not, you have to constantly be talking to the back-row and even the front row throughout the entire game. You typically help to lead the team energy and communication wise, which are two major factors in volleyball.

What have you learned about yourself in tough times while playing?
Volleyball is very hard on you mentally as it’s a game of mistakes. This means you have to be strong mentally in order to be as successful as you’d like, so I’ve learnt a lot about myself from playing. I know that I can handle tough situations and won’t shut down due to them. Every game/practice new challenges are thrown at me, and I now know that I am fully capable of working through and handling them.

How did you find and why did you choose Amanda Rider for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom actually saw a post Amanda had made on Facebook about needing senior reps for the 2023 class during the same time we had been looking at different options for my senior pictures. She ended up responding to the post and next thing you know, we were headed to go take those rep-pics. Amanda was amazing! She’s super relaxed and helps to make you feel comfortable while taking the pictures. I loved the entire experience and was so happy once seeing the pictures once they were ready.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
An inspiring thing about me that my nomination doesn’t cover, is that I used to do Choi Kwang Do and earned my first-degree black belt. It took about four years for me to achieve. I am also close to obtaining my second degree black belt, but due travel with volleyball and my workload at school, I decided to take a step back for the time being.

What is Choi Kwang Do/How does it differ from other martial arts?
Choi Kwang Do focused a lot more on respect, control, and self-defense. You’re never actually contacting your peers when practicing so there’s little to no injury involved, unlike a lot of other martial arts. There was still a lot of competition involved within it, but the focus was on discipline. Respect was always expected, and you’re taught from the start that disrespect to anyone, especially your masters is not okay.

What did Choi Kwang Do teach you?
Choi Kwang Do has taught me a lot, including the importance of hard-work, focus, respect, and discipline. It pushed me to do my best and become the determined person I am now.

What are you looking forward to most this summer?
Personally, I’m looking forward to spending time with friends and family. This is the first summer where things are normal or almost back to normal after Covid. It’s going to be nice to be able to do the things that have been missed out on since the virus came out.

What is a favorite memory with your family that you hope you never forget?
A favorite memory with my family has been being able to go to Fort Walton Beach, Florida basically every year for Spring break. It’s almost like a second home there and every time we go, we make great memories. I hope I never forget going there with them and just being able to enjoy being with each other.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would want to present to my peers about the importance of going into a field to help others. I grew up with my mom being a nurse, so I know that I would like to pursue medicine and make a difference every day in someone’s life. I know it means you commit to long hours, tons of school, and a lot of difficult moments, but helping others is always worth it to me.
The difficulty of medicine and long hours doesn’t make me want to change my mind. I know for certain I want to help people just like my mom does every single day.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I’d give someone who wants to be where I am today is to put in the work for the things you want. Without working hard, I would be nowhere near where I am currently.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself probably still being in school. The medical field is the goal for me, so hopefully I’ll be in a good spot and working towards whichever profession within that I decide on.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity/pastime that wasn’t in my nomination is that I actually really enjoy art. Painting, drawing, doodling, etc. are all things that I enjoy doing whenever bored or I have free time.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are skydiving, taking a trip to Paris, and experiencing the Northern Lights.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents inspiring. Without them I don’t know what I’d do, and I want to be able to give my own kids the same support.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I’m inspiring because I always try for the things I want. I work really hard and I hope that if people were inspired by anything, that it would be that.

Abby Mayer – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by Moments In Time by Kimberly Krueger
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Abby just joined my team and in her first two shoots she has proven to be a natural in front of the camera, helps support the other girls and is loving the process. Abby is self motivated and a super hard worker! She is passionate about conservation and an animal lover who spends her time as a volunteer Zoo Teen at the Indianapolis Zoo. She plays club volleyball at B-Town Volleyball Club, works part-time at our small town candy shop and is an active member of both FFA and the National Honor Society at her High School.

What should we definitely know about you?
I love to spend time volunteering at both our local Zoo and my old Elementary School.
I'm passionate about animals and conservation.
I work very hard to maintain strong academics while also serving as part of a student-led leadership team at my High School and as part of the FFA Officer Team.
I love art and musical theater and enjoy classes in both.
I love volleyball and spend a good deal of time each week practicing and playing in tournaments with my club team.
I strive to be a fierce advocate for my friends and family and I'm not afraid to stand up for myself and my beliefs.

What are your volunteer duties at your local zoo?
When on shift at the Indianapolis Zoo I work mainly with children, educating them about the animals that they can see there. I run small games and hands-on activities designed to teach the children about the different animals and talk to them about conservation efforts specific to the different animals in ways that they can understand.

What do you love about volunteering there?
I love volunteering at the Zoo for multiple reasons. First, I absolutely love the animals and want to educate both myself and others on how we can help them in the wild. I enjoy the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends who have similar interests and I enjoy working with kids and helping to mold them into future animal lovers. I love seeing a child’s reaction when they learn that a Walrus’s tusk can grow to be as tall as they are or when they see a Dolphin do a flip. It makes me so happy to see kids be as passionate as I am about the animals.

What are your goals for a career with animals & what made you choose this specific path?
My current plan is to attend college to major in Marine Biology with a minor in Psychology. My dream is to attend either Texas A&M or the University of Miami, FL to earn those degrees. In the future I would love to work with marine animals, specializing in dolphins.

How did you find and why did you choose Kimberly Kruger for your photographer? What was your experience like with her? What did you love most about it?
I found Kim through one of my best friends who was already part of her team. She told me about the opportunity, and even though I hadn’t met Kim in person I immediately signed up and I’m so glad that I did! Every experience with Kim has been amazing! She is so uplifting, and she makes me feel beautiful every time we shoot together. Coming in as the new girl into an established team can be a bit intimidating, but Kim and the girls have all been super supportive and it’s been such a positive experience.

How did you get started volunteering at your elementary school and what do you do there?
The idea to volunteer at my elementary school started because I’m a member of National Honor Society and a requirement for that group is community-based volunteer hours. I wanted to spend my time giving back while also doing something I enjoy so I met with their athletic director and talked with him about volunteer opportunities. We ended up deciding that it would be a perfect fit to have me volunteer my time to coach one of their younger level volleyball teams. Working with these girls gives me the opportunity to teach others about the sport that I love!

What do you do in FFA?
Within my local FFA chapter I serve on the officer team as the chapter’s elected Reporter. In this role I am responsible for running all the social media for our chapter. I utilize our social media accounts to showcase the accomplishments of our current members while also promoting what FFA is about to potential newcomers. I strive to help make all new members feel welcome. As a chapter we spend time attending conferences on varying topics, working towards earning higher levels of accomplishments, participating in community service events and so much more.

What is your favorite memory from FFA?
During our trip to the National Convention in Indianapolis last year one of our day trips was to the Indianapolis Zoo. Even with all the time I spend at the Zoo, it’s still one of my favorite places. With my chapter I had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and get up close with the Rhinos. While there I got to pet the male Rhino at the Zoo, whose name is Spike. It was a really fun experience!

What are you and your friends most looking forward to doing together this summer?
My friends and I are looking forward to a summer full of swimming, movies, sleepovers and concerts!

What is a summer tradition with your family that you always look forward to?
A tradition I’m looking forward to is going to Holiday World (an amusement & water park in Santa Claus, IN) with my family and friends. Before Covid we had taken a family trip to this park every summer since I was born, but since Covid we haven’t been able to go for the last two summers. I’m really looking forward to re-starting the tradition this summer!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my High School I serve as a "Cougar Leader" which means I serve as a mentor to younger students and help to support incoming Freshmen as they transition to High School.
I also volunteer my time as part of my old elementary school/ middle school volleyball program where this fall I plan to serve as a Coach on one of the school teams. I look forward to working with the girls, teaching them skills and how to succeed in the sport that I love.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
My topic would be conservation and animals. I love to spend my free time volunteering at our local zoo where I work as part of their Zoo Teen Education Program. As part of this program, I get to work with children - educating them about the different animals that the Zoo cares for and various conservation acts that they can integrate into their daily lives.
I'm an animal lover at heart- whether we're talking about my two dogs at home or the dolphins at the Zoo! I want to make sure that future generations are able to visit and learn about the amazing animals on the planet.

3 Things on your bucket list:
1. Visit the Australia Zoo
2. Feed Alligators & Crocodiles
3. Swim with sharks

Summer White

Picture

Summer White – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Summer White has always been an inspiration to her family and friends. Shel loves sports and has been involved with many different sports all her life. So many of her friends tried new sports and loved it, thanks to her positive and loving encouragement. The leadership role she has as varsity cheer captain and varsity baseball manager has been a fabulous experience for her. She had the opportunity to not only encourage her peers, but also teachers, administration, and other parents. The cheer team came in 2nd at nationals and everyone huddled around Summer because they knew she would have the perfect speech for them at that time. The varsity baseball team recently lost at the state level and Summer was the one that calmed the team down and reminded them just how amazing they all were to even get to that game. Summer always has a smile on her face and an encouraging word for everyone she sees.

What would you most like to discuss?
I’d like to discuss the importance of the balance between education and physical education. You cannot be successful in one without the other. If you want to be successful academically, you must be taking care of yourself mentally and physically.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My dedication to being a good friend. I am constantly trying to push my friends who seem to be going through a hard time. College applications and acceptances were a troubling time for myself and my friends. We took on extra tumbling lessons, extra coffee dates, and some really fun dinners to relieve stress! I like to think I am a good distraction and source of positivity and encouragement during stressful times. I believe everyone was born to do something big whether it is a small task or big one! We all have a purpose!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would like to present the need for physical exercise! What I think lacks in my generation is the push for exercise. Something as simple as a walk outside helps our endorphins. It’s important to do something as simple as going out for a walk to soak in some vitamin d. We are losing the importance of putting our phones down and enjoying the sunshine today!

Mena Brazinski

6/14/2022

Picture

Mena Brazinski – New York
Nomination & Photography by Bev Selvetti Photography
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Mena Brazinski is a senior at Rome Free Academy and will be majoring in English at SUNY Albany this fall. She is president of her school's Model United Nations club and spearheads its initiatives to help the environment. Writing is one of her hobbies, and her past work has been recognized-- she won the Davis Essay contest. After she graduates with her bachelor's, she hopes to either attend graduate school and become an English professor or go to law school to become a child advocacy lawyer. She will also graduate from her high school with a seal for civil service.

What should we know about you?
My love for reading and writing is my most salient feature; it drives almost everything I do, and the books I have read throughout my life have shaped who I am. I could talk for hours about the ones that impacted me the most. It has led me to this major that will give me the freedom to choose from many different career paths when I make my final decision in four years, and I am excited to accomplish my long term goals of getting involved in local politics and giving back to my community after I graduate college.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I try to be as humble as possible, but I am proud of all I have achieved because I worked hard for it. What I am most proud of is my original poem, "Someone to Leave Parties With." It was given an honorable mention from Scholastic, but the award wasn't the most important part-- it was how hard I worked on it. I am also a ski instructor, and I love what I do. I have worked at my ski hill for four years and was able to market myself and work on my public speaking.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I am incredibly passionate about the importance of literacy. The shift to technology has left us forgetting how vital it is to read books. They are how we tell stories and how we preserve them to pass down; it is the very thing that makes us human. To be able to relate to a piece of literature from hundreds of years ago just goes to show how people are the same across the ages. There's something really comforting and grounding in that.

Kerry Collins

Picture

Kerry Collins – West Virginia
Nomination & Photography by Olivia Kaye Photography
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kerry is one of the most fun, loyal, outgoing seniors there is. During his four years at Bluefield High School, he has proven to be a dedicated student and athlete. Kerry is a pep-club leader, President of the student body, and a member of the theater department. He is a member of the National Honor Society maintaining a high level of academic achievement all while balancing an outstanding baseball career. Kerry has played baseball for the past 15 years and was offered a scholarship to continue his career at Bluefield State College in the fall.

What should we definitely know about you?
For the biggest part of my life, 15 years to be exact, I have played baseball at different levels. I would like to be interviewed about baseball and how I worked and trained to prepare myself for the next level all along the way. Private hitting lessons, private pitching lessons and workouts along with travel ball all prepared me for the next step in my career. Playing team sports teaches you how to get along with others, how to play by the rules, it teaches you character and about life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
A characteristic about me that makes me inspiring is that I am VERY enthusiastic! I am passionate about everything that I am involved in and give it my all. Whether it's being the lively and energetic pep club leader, an animated character in the high school musical or an encouraging leader on the filed I do it all enthusiastically.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Baseball! I love baseball and all the aspects of the game. Baseball is kind of like life; it has no clock. You know there is an end, but you are never certain on when it will be. You must anticipate the next move before it happens. You must have a strategy and understand that it can change during the game, and you must adapt to it. You might be way behind in the score, but can regroup and come back to hold on to another inning or even win in the end.

Emily Miller - California
Nomination & Photography by Keri
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: My name is Emily Miller and I am 13 years old. I have grown up always wanting to do modeling and seeing all these beautiful people doing what they love, and my goal is to do that as well. I would love to show young women why it is important to love yourself and feel confident and beautiful no matter what.

Mini-Interview:
What would you most like to talk about?
How I got my interest for being a performer such as a model and actress & how I handle feedback such as people’s opinions. You should know I’m a bubbly, fun, and very caring person who would do anything for the people I love and care about.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think the fact that I’m 13 and am an entrepreneur. I have an online jewelry shop that means the world to me and inspires me to work hard. It also inspires others by showing young women they can do anything.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present the topic of being a young business owner. The reason is because it can be hard to juggle business and school especially being so young, but it’s very possible. I am very passionate on the fact that it’s something I truly love. I can go on and on for days on why my brand is so important to me.

How did you find and why did you choose Leah Custer Photography for your photographer?

I found out about Leah Custer Photography through Madison Insolia. Madison was a part of the Leah's ambassador team last year. Madison said she loved her photoshoots as they were always so much fun, and something she could look forward to. I chose Leah Custer Photography to be a part of her amazing ambassador team and have these wonderful opportunities. I wanted to have different photo experiences that I could have for my portfolio for my future career path

What has your experience been like?.
My experience with Leah Custer Photography has been amazing to be able to work with such a talented photographer in many different settings.

What did you love most about being on the ambassador team?
What I love the most about being on the ambassador team is that I get opportunities that most individuals might not get to experience. We try new settings, poses, or even props. I'm always excited to come to the photoshoot to see what fun we will have.

What has your favorite photo shoot been?
My favorite photoshoot was my first photoshoot with Leah at Camp North End in Charlotte. All of my outfits went well with all of the fun scenery. Leah Custer had the best poses and props from me to use. I ultimately loved this photoshoot.

Tell us about your dance career.
I love to dance. I have been dancing for 14 years in all genres but my favorite is Jazz. I was accepted into CATA a Technology & Arts high school for the dance academy. I go to Carolina Dance Capital, this dance studio has been a second home for me to go to. Ms. Nina is one of the most dedicated instructors I know. She has helped me with building dance skills, as well as helping me have new life skills. I couldn’t be more grateful for this amazing women.

What is it like going to a high school for dance rather than a regular high school?
Going to a high school for dance is truly something I couldn’t be more thankful for. I have gotten the chance to meet some of my longtime best friends. CATA has other performing arts academy including MPRA, theatre, and apparel. I have gotten the chance to learn how to sew and make my own costumes and I have learned how to mix dance with the theatre. The teachers have created various performing exercises to expand my knowledge.

What do you love about dance that makes you so involved?
The people is something I love so much about dance. During this generation there is so much judging other people, but at dance I know it is a place where I can be free and not have to worry about the judgement. While dancing you are always inspiring someone, it could be with a trick, confidence, or something so simple as being better then you were the day before. Dance is a place that I know I can always express myself through my movement even when I am having a bad day, I can dance the bad days away.

What don't people who don't dance realize about dance/dancers?
Non-dancers don’t understand how much of a time and commitment dance is.  I spend the majority of my week at the dance studio, even including weekends.  Dancers do get hurt however, you can still be involved by sitting out and listening to corrections. Sometimes actually watching the mistakes can help you understand when you come back to dance.  You become stronger than ever. Dance does take a lot of skill but you can’t have skill if you don’t have your mind in it.

What has been your favorite dance experience so far?
I have had many dance experiences throughout my years of dancing. My favorite dance experience was having the opportunity to dance in Disney for Dance the Magic. Studios who wanted to participate applied with a tryout. Our studio was accepted and we got the experience to dance at Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom down Main St USA. I really enjoyed this amazing dance experience.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
My topic I would present to my peers would be My Dance Life.
This topic is important to me because it has shaped me to be the person I am today. It has made me a strong, independent and caring individual. I have learned how to take care of my mind, body and be able to work together with my teammates no matter the situation. I hope that I can encourage others to join the dance field.

Have you had any leadership opportunities within community service? If so, tell us about them.
I have had an opportunity within the community to help setup, and take down a fair organized by one of my teachers at school.  I have also been involved twice for trunk or treat that our school puts on for the community.

What else should we know about you?

At CATA I belong to the Beta Club, which gives me the opportunity to provide support to the community. In my spare time I enjoy watching football, spending time with friends and shopping. For college I plan on studying sports medicine and hope to pursue a career working for the NFL.

What service projects do you do with the Beta Club?
Service projects I have done with Beta Club are helping with trunk or treat, school musicals, as well as running some of the games for the track fundraiser.

What's your favorite football team and who do you watch with? Describe a typical game day.
My favorite NFL football team is the New England Patriots.  A typical game day for me is watching with my dad, mom, sometimes my brother and friends.  We have snacks, pizza and my mom usually bakes a dessert.  I have been lucky to be able to see them play twice a Gillette Stadium as well as 3 other times in different stadiums.  Watching a Patriots game in Gillette Stadium is an amazing experience.

What are you doing now to prep for a career working with the NFL?
I have been taking medical classes and doing research at my school to help prepare me for college in the sports medicine field.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
When we have time off from dance we like to shop, eat out and swim.

Where are your favorite places to shop and what do you love to shop for most?
My favorite places to shop are Boem, Vestique, Forever 21, Rue 21, Lululemon. My favorite thing to shop for is leggings and athletic clothes.

Lexi Kinch – Wisconsin
Nomination & Photography by Candid Touch Photography and Design
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lexi Kinch goes beyond the definition of Inspiring Teen. She is an athlete, she is part of her student government, and is active in many club organizations such as FFA, Key Club, and Spanish Club to name a few. However, beyond her accomplishments in school and on the field Lexi is inspiring for her courage, determination, and strength over the past year. In November, Lexi was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. During the past 7 months Lexi has shown her friends, family, and community her amazing strength, grace, determination, and courage as she faced this obstacle head on. Her sense of humor and positive attitude through it all has been an example of what a true warrior looks like. I couldn't be more proud to have worked with her this past year in my senior ambassador program. She will continue to inspire us all and make a difference as she has decided to pursue a future career in Medical Research with an emphasis on Cancer Research.

What sports do you play and which is your favorite? Why?
I am a football cheerleader, wrestling cheerleader, and softball player. My favorite season is wrestling cheer. I was born into the wrestling community with my dad being a former MP wrestler and coach. They are like a second family to me and have stood by me for the past four years that I have been a cheerleader. It's one of my highlights from every year.

What is a favorite accomplishment from one of your sports?
My favorite accomplishment is participating in softball while still undergoing chemotherapy. Chemo takes a huge toll on the human body. I never let that affect me, though. I always pushed through practices and games because I was determined to have a great senior season. I'm very proud of myself for pushing myself throughout the season to do my best even when it was difficult for me.

Tell us about your involvement in FFA. What do you participate in the most?
I have been a part of the Mineral Point FFA for two years now. The biggest event I take part in is the fruit sale we do every fall. It is a fundraiser we put on to raise money for the club. We send out links to people in the community that offer various assortments of fruit, cheese, and other treats. I am honored to have been a part of this club.

What is your role in Key Club? Which service project have you liked the most?
I have been in Key Club for three years. I help with running concession stands, making Santa Grams, and Community Service Day. Community Service Day is my favorite service project. It is a day dedicated to helping people in our community clean yards, buildings, and highways. It is a great way to give back to the community that has given us so much and make new friends in the process.

What do you most look forward to in the Spanish Club?
In Spanish Club, we take a trip every other year to a Spanish-speaking country. My sophomore year of high school we were supposed to travel to Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, the trip was canceled due to the pandemic. However, my love for learning about different languages and cultures has not changed. I truly enjoyed taking part in Spanish Club!

What leadership opportunities have you received as a result of your memberships to these clubs?
I have held many leader positions in various clubs and teams. I have been elected to student government and held captain positions on each of the cheer teams. My most significant leadership role has been being elected Senior Class and Student Body President.

What do you feel are your strongest leadership qualities?
My strongest leadership quality would have to be my ability to listen to both sides and find a happy median. I tend to listen to everyone's ideas and thoughts on something before making any decisions. Recently, I was tasked with picking out picture frames and mats for the class gift. I listened to the opinions of several of my classmates before selecting a frame. I think this quality is what makes me a successful leader.

Why did you choose Candid Touch Photography and Design for your senior photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?

I choose Candid Touch Photography and Design because I had the privilege to be an ambassador for them in 2021. It was an amazing experience and so much fun to work with Mandi. We always have fun with funky poses and photoshoots. My favorite part of my senior photoshoot was when Mandi asked me to go down one step on the waterfall, and I fell down the entire waterfall! My hair and dress got soaked, but the pictures turned out amazing in the end!

What has your experience with cancer been like?
Having cancer was no walk in the park. There were some low points during my journey that were difficult to overcome. I got really sick in January. During that time, I didn't eat much or leave the bed. In the end, my family, friends, and community were the reason I kept fighting.

What do you wish people knew about knowing someone with cancer?
Just because I have cancer doesn't mean I am a different person. At first a lot of people didn't talk to me. It wasn't because they were scared or didn't want to. It was because they didn’t know how to. Eventually, I started walking up to others and making conversation to let them know it's okay. I haven't changed, and I am still the same person. My advice to people who know someone with cancer would be to let them know you are there for them no matter what. Even a simple hello will brighten their day!

What have you learned about yourself in the process of having cancer?
I have learned that I am so much stronger than I ever thought I was. When I first learned I had cancer, I wasn't sure how I was going to get through it. I told myself to keep my head up and look at the bright side. I always kept a smile on my face and never showed any weakness around my peers. This helped me keep the atmosphere around me a positive environment.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I have ever had to accomplish would be catching up on school work that I missed during treatment weeks. I had to block out all distractions in order to make sure all my work got done.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Always stay positive and wear your heart on your sleeve. Helping others and seeing their smiles is something you can't put a price on!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I will hopefully be attending graduate school in my pursuit of being a cancer researcher.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love getting creative and drawing. I have tons of advanced coloring books, and it's my favorite way to relieve stress!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I am pretty good at doing hair and make-up.

3 Things on your bucket list
1: Graduate from college
2: Go to a Bon Jovi concert
3: Visit countries in eastern Asia and learn more about them

Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person in my life is my older sister, Kaitlyn. She has always pushed to me to be the best version of myself possible. I am incredibly thankful for her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my strength and determination mixed with my attitude and kindness sets me apart from the crowd. You will rarely see me without a smile on my face.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am very thankful for my family. I would not be where I am today without them. They have been there since day one and always stuck by me, even on my bad days. I love them more than words can explain!

Tell us about the Limitless youth group. What is it and how did you get involved?
Limitless is a movement of 6th - 12th grade students who gather weekly to experience Jesus, grow in their love and knowledge of God's word, develop meaningful relationships, and be developed through discipleship to reach their world. When I first started going, I was shy and really didn't know many people but everyone there just welcomed me in like family.

What do you do there?
We participate in many activities at youth group. We play games before it starts and eat pizza. Once we go in the sanctuary, we attend worship and listen to a message from our youth pastor. After the message is over, we split up by grade level and go to small groups where we answer a few questions about the message and basically talk about our week.

What do you love most about it?
The worship at church is always so powerful and its so cool seeing other friends my age praising Jesus. I also love the community that we have at limitless and how everyone is always there for you when you need them. I bring my brothers every Wednesday. It is definitely something we look forward to.

What is a favorite memory from babysitting?
I don't know if I could pick a favorite because I have so many. Kids are so funny and say some silly things. I honestly just love spending time with them and hearing what they have to say. One time I said "Oh my gosh" while I was watching a 3 year old and she turned around so fast and in her cute voice she told me "Hey! No say oh my gosh, you say oh my goodness."

What is something you love doing with your family?
What I love most is that we do so many adventures together. We go riding on four wheelers, ride jet skis, have family dinners, go on the boat, go to church, go to the movies and go fishing.

Picture

What is the best part about having your mom be your photographer? Did you get to help plan your shoot? What did you love most about it?
I love planning our photo shoots and going shopping to pick out the outfits. I also love making memories while taking pictures and having the opportunity to have my mom capture these moments in my life. Having my mom as a photographer, I feel more comfortable to be myself.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
A family tradition we have is going to a fancy restaurant for new years and we review the things that happened from that year and plan goals for the upcoming year.

What is a childhood memory you will always remember with your siblings?
Over spring break we took our boat to the Bahamas and my brothers and I swam with nurse sharks! It was an experience we will never forget.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

Now that I have graduated high school, I am going to attend LEAD college in Mandeville, Louisiana at Church of the King. I am very excited to grow even more in my faith and community.

Kyleigh Morrison – Ohio
Nomination by Kristine Morrison
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios
Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kyleigh has inspired me by her strength and perseverance over the last few years. What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I would love to share my mental health and assault journey with everyone. I think my journey would help others to persevere through the rough times in their lives. I am a huge advocate for mental health as well as SA (Sexual Assault) in teenage girls.

Tell us more about your mental health journey.
I have learned to not be ashamed of having mental health challenges and that it is important to reach out to others for support. Had I not been strong enough to reach out for help at my lowest point, after being sexually assaulted by my best friend, I may not be here today. It took thoughts of suicide and hospitalization, as well as numerous therapy sessions to realize that my time here is not over and that I have so much left to do in life.

What is SA and what do people need to know about it?
SA stands for Sexual Assault. It is important for teen girls (or anyone for that matter) to know that it is not their fault if they are sexually assaulted and that it is OK to speak out and advocate for themselves.

What have you learned about yourself in these explorations?
That I am strong, independent and worthy of the love and respect that I deserve.

What are your best leadership qualities in helping others through the same tough time you've been through?
Having been through an assault and having suicidal ideations, I believe I can help others by sharing my story, encouraging others to reach out for help and always being a shoulder to lean on.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination left out a few key parts in my life. Over the past year I have gone through what no teenage girl should go through. I have made it through everything and am still here today! These characteristics make my story inspiring to other girls around me.

What would you like to share about what you've gone through?
That although it was an awful set of circumstances, that no one should have to endure, I have come out on the other side so much stronger and more confident than ever.

What advice do you have for others going through something similar?
Reach out to someone you trust and ask for help and support.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present awareness of mental health as I believe nobody should feel in the dark or alone during their worst times. I would start with my story and go into how to get help and reach out to family and friends.

How did you find and why did you choose Jennifer Grace Studios for your photographer?
Jenny found me on Instagram and sent me a DM about applying to be on her 2023 Senior Model Team.

Are you on the model team? What has your experience been like?
Yes. I absolutely love it! Jenny is amazing and I have met several new, lifelong friends outside of my community.

What did you love most about your shoots with Jenny?
I love the variety of shoots that we do. The fun themes and varied outfits, as well as the different backgrounds and settings!

If you could travel anywhere for a photo shoot, where would it be & why?
I would travel to NYC because I love the bright lights and hustle/bustle of the city. There are so many different opportunities for unique and artistic photos.

What will you remember most about your junior year?
That I am stronger and more capable than I could ever have imagined.

Where would we find you in your down time and what would you be doing?
In my down time I would be hanging out with friends at a nearby lake beach.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing that I have accomplished was maintaining a 4.0 GPA while enduring the toughest times of my school career, missing numerous school days because of it, but still being accepted and inducted into the National Honor Society.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be free to be who you want to be and enjoy life.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I plan to have graduated from college with a degree in Biomedical Engineering and kicked off my career designing prosthetic limbs for children.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I absolutely LOVE to build Lego sets!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I do! I can fold my tongue into a clover

Issue 56 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Cassie Harris was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma in early 2021 when she was 16 and in her sophomore year of high school. Always a fierce competitor on the softball field, Cassie knew she was in for a battle but always kept a smile. In September Cassie returned to school for her junior year, giving high school soccer a try even though she never played before. When spring came around Cassie was ready for her favorite sport which is softball and was the starting varsity catcher. Part way into the season, Cassie has a biopsy done on a spot that showed up on a scan from a checkup. The results were good news as it was negative for cancer and Cassie returned to the softball field and just enjoyed her junior prom.

What was it like finding out you had cancer, and the process that followed?
When I first found out I had cancer it didn’t come as a shock, for months I told my doctors that I thought I had cancer and none of them listened or believed me. The whole process started very quick, the day after I was diagnosed, they put my port in, then the next day I started my chemo journey.

What were your challenges and how did you overcome them?
Throughout my whole journey some of the challenges I faced consisted of physical and mental challenges. Physically I lost all my body strength, speed, and started to develop breathing problems. Mentally I fell far behind the rest of my class when it came to school, because I couldn’t do school throughout my treatment. Another challenge I faced mentally was I wasn’t allowed to see my friends, so I felt very alone and like I was missing out on all the fun.

How did having cancer change you for the better?
It made me a stronger person and changed the way I see my life. It taught me to not take anything for granted and to appreciate the little things in life.

What was the hardest thing about the entire ordeal and how did you get past it?
Chemo was definitely the hardest part of the whole journey. Constantly feeling sick, not being able to eat, sleeping all the time so I couldn’t feel the pain. Knowing that every treatment was one step closer to the end really helped me. Using different remedies for the nausea and pain also made chemo a lot smoother.

What was recovery like?
It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t hard. Adapting and realizing I still don’t have my strength back was really hard. My breathing still isn’t the best, but it’s definitely gotten a lot better. Overall, it has taken a strong toll on my body and I’m still till this day working my way back to 100%.

Picture
Photography by Leiter Side Photography

What would have made it easier?
I believe that if I wouldn’t have lost my hair it would have made it a lot easier. During the whole process I had trouble and a lack of self-confidence. I was too focused on getting made fun of for not having hair and I never realized how strong it made me look.

What were you grateful for?
I was grateful for the support of my friends, family and community. They all made sure that my family was well taken care of. They held fundraisers to help with all the expenses of treatment and constantly traveling to the hospital. The support system helped make the journey a lot easier.

What was a positive memory from treatment or recovery?
A positive memory from recovery was finally being able to see my friends and play softball again.

What do you wish people knew?
I wish people knew how hard it is to stay positive throughout the whole journey, but it’s not impossible. As long as you have a good attitude, everything will work out in your favor.

Picture
Photography by Leiter Side Photography

Why did you choose Leiter Side Photography for your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?

I chose Leiter Side Photography because he is a local owned business and he does amazing work. He also lost his son to cancer and likes to take the opportunity to take pictures of me anytime. It was by far the best experience with any photographer I have ever gotten pictures done with. What I loved most about was he is very artistic and is always up to any ideas you have.

Tell us more about your softball career.
I started playing softball when I was 8 years old. I am a catcher, but I can play any position you put me at even pitcher. I am currently playing for my High School team, and we just won the district championship.

What is a favorite accomplishment from softball?
My favorite accomplishment was winning the championship every year from ponies all the way to my last year at teeners. We also held the record for every year.

How was trying soccer for the first time in the fall?
I absolutely loved it, it was very first time playing and I was able to start varsity in districts.

Tell us about your prom experience.

It was my fourth prom I attended, but the very first one for my own school and it was by far my favorite. I had an amazing night with my friends and date. I even won prom princess.

What will you remember most about your junior year?
There are three things I will remember the most about my junior year. Being voted into homecoming court, winning prom princess, and winning districts for my softball team.
