Paige LaCombe – Louisiana
Nomination by Renee LaCombe
Photography by Stephanie Roy
Issue 69 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Paige LaCombe has conquered the odds at a pivotal point in her childhood that drastically changed her life. Paige was diagnosed with Stevens Johnson Syndrome at the age of eight. After surviving being burned nearly 80% of her body from the inside out, Paige never had a reason to look at life from the rear-view mirror. She’s been able to embrace her recovery with pride all while continuing to maintain her studies in school. Although her beauty has returned, she still has some underlying medical conditions that she will battle for the rest of her life.

What is Stevens Johnson Syndrome and what were your symptoms?
Stevens Johnson’s Syndrome is a rare condition that burns you from the inside out due to a
medical reaction. My symptoms started off as what doctors thought was strep, and then pinkeye. I was soon rushed to the hospital with 104 fever as my skin was slowly blistering and sluffing off. Those were the beginning symptoms. Then it escalated to many weeks/months in a burn unit ICU.

What do you want people to know about Stevens Johnson Syndrome and how it affected you?
At the young age of 8 years old, I was hospitalized with a very rare syndrome. I have endured 21 plus surgeries and missed the majority of my early teen years in and out of hospitals. With persistence, alot of work and love from my community I was able to graduate on time with my 2023 class. I hope this encourages anyone that is battling something to never stop the fight.

What do you still struggle with as a result and how do you compensate for them?
My struggles still to this day is my eyes. I wear prosthetic devices in my eyes, basically glass
contacts to help my vision and keep my eyes hydrated. I no longer produce natural tears. My eyelashes grow inward now so in result I have eye appointments every month to see about my special contacts and to have my eyelashes plucked.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever
I’m forever thankful to Shriners Hospital for saving my life and allowing me to spread the good word of their work. Starting at the age of 13 until current, I serve as a Shriners Hospital Patient Ambassador.
My mom taught me at a young age when something negative happens, you must turn it into something positive. At that point I knew I wouldn’t let the horrific SJS syndrome that almost took my life define me. I beat the odds. That chapter of my life I now shared with others to inspire them to never give up.

What does it mean to be a Patient Ambassador for Shriners Hospital?
It means the world. Shriners did so much for me while I was a patient there. So now, today I get to spread my story about what the hospital did for me.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
When life is tough, remember to keep moving forward. Unfortunate events in my early years of life shifted my mindset that I couldn't be a quitter. My scars don't define me, I'm here and alive and well. I'm blessed.

How did you find your photographer, Stephanie Roy? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer is my dad's first cousin. Picking Stephanie was easy. She is well known in our area as being one of the best photographers. I'm blessed to consider her family.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my friends and going to the gym. Especially going shopping!

What is your family like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
I have a family of five. I am the oldest of two little brothers. I stand out as the biggest helper; I bring my brothers wherever they need to go. I cook some nights and most importantly I get to guide my brothers through middle and high school.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
Every year we have a huge Christmas breakfast at our dinner table, we all laugh and talk about our favorite Christmas present. It’s truly the best part of Christmas.

Calli Thompson – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Dawn Bubonic Photography
Issue 69 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Calli Thompson is the total package when thinking of inspiring teens. She is a kind, compassionate soul who is always willing to help someone. While her dad is going through chemo treatments, Calli has reprioritized her responsibilities without complaint and with great fortitude. Her impact on the community became evident as they rallied behind her family to ensure they don’t fight this battle alone.
Calli plays varsity volleyball and softball while maintaining a 4.33 GPA and a member of the NHS. She will major in Early Childhood Education.
Her uplifting, encouraging demeanor is contagious and inspires those around her.

Picture
Photography by Dawn Bubonic Photography

What would you like to talk about?
I am a member of my high school’s varsity volleyball and softball programs, and participate in all honors/AP courses while maintaining a 4.33 GPA. I am an active member in my community by dedicating time to helping youth athletes, and I am a part of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club in school that dedicates time to bettering our students and community.

Tell us about your volleyball career.

I started playing volleyball when I was in third grade. I continued playing throughout middle school and am now a middle/right side hitter for the varsity team at my high school.

What is a favorite memory with your volleyball team?
This past season, my team had a benefit game dedicated to my dad to help raise money for his battle against colon cancer. The whole community came to the game to support, and many people donated baskets, gifts, and baked goods to sell. It was really special seeing everyone come together to support my family.

What position do you play in softball and what do you love most about the sport?
I am a catcher and a first baseman. The thing I enjoy most about softball is that it’s been the sport I’ve played the longest, so getting to see year to year improvements from myself and my team is really cool. It’s my outlet to relieve stress and work hard to make myself and team better.

What is a favorite accomplishment from softball?
My favorites accomplishment in softball is when I received the Susie Mettler memorial award two years in a row. Susie Mettler was a past Perry softball player who passed away when she was in high school. Her memorial award is given to someone who is an overall uplifting and encouraging teammate who works hard and has a love for the game. Getting voted for this award two years in a row by teammates shows they think of me as a good leader and person, which, in my eyes, is the best accomplishment of all.

Why are academics important to you?
Before I am an athlete, I am a student. I have always taken pride in my grades and understand how important they are to have the best future I can have. I try to challenge myself with hard courses to better prepare me for the real world.

What was your favorite class last year and what was the most interesting thing you learned?
My favorite class I took last year was my child development class. I learned how children ages newborn to 8 years old develop physically and mentally. It was really interesting getting to learn about the reasons children do the things they do, and how to help them become the best versions of themselves.

What service project did you love most in the NHS?
I was just recently inducted into NHS a month before school ends. Because of this, we did not have much time to do many service projects. But, in the upcoming school year, I am looking forward to car wash fundraisers, new inductions, and teacher appreciations.

What leadership roles have you had within that organization?
Because I am so new to the organization, I have not had time to lead any projects. In the coming school year, though, I am hoping to take charge of current projects, and potentially create some fun new ones.

Why did you choose Early Childhood Education?
When I took the child development class, I really developed a love for learning about kids. I did an internship with a kindergarten class and absolutely fell in love with the career. I’ve always been a very social person who loves to help others, so getting to interact with kids all day and push them to be the best they can be is something I want to do.

What has been your most rewarding experience helping youth athletes?
Because of my experience in my internship, I’ve learned to better interact with young kids. It’s very rewarding being able to connect with the young athletes I help coach and see how proud they are of themselves when they learn a new skill.

What are your roles and responsibilities in the Students Against Destructive Decisions club?
In this club, the students run all kinds of different events and activities to help the community. In the fall, I volunteered at a veterans breakfast the week of 9/11 where I got to serve and talk with veterans. I also helped prepare and hand deliver a meal for Project Hope for the Homeless, a homeless shelter near my hometown.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I always keep a positive attitude despite hardships I face. Last year, my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Throughout his fight, although tough, I find it in me to keep a smile on my face, and find the good in every day because the only way to stay positive is to seek positivity. I help others, work hard in what I do, and remember to stay grateful for what I have.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I’m very passionate about my ability to converse with others. I recently did an internship with a kindergarten class and absolutely loved it. I really enjoy being social with people of all ages, including kids and elderly. I believe being able to listen to others is an important quality that will take anyone far in life.

How did you find your photographer, Dawn Bubonic Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer lives right up the street from me. She photographs many kids from our area and is very popular on social media for her senior picture work. My experience was very positive. She allowed me to be myself and do what I was comfortable with while still guiding me through the process. I loved getting to try new things in different areas and experiment with the pictures.

Picture

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?

You would most likely find me hanging out with my friends, finding exciting new things to do or new restaurants to try together. I love getting to spend time with those close to me. On a more chill day, you would most likely find me in bed reading a book. I love to read and once I start, it’s hard to stop.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am very excited to start my senior year and experience all the lasts of high school. I love my school, but I can’t wait to start applying to colleges and finalizing my decisions of where I want to go and what I want to do.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was increasing my batting average from .189 to .443 in one year. Every day after practice, I would stay after and hit one on one with my coaches. Over the summer, I would hit twice a week with my hitting coach so I was prepared for my next season.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard and enjoy where you are right now. Time flies.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be graduated from college and beginning a teaching career/a career involving assisting kids.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I enjoy reading in my free time and spending time with my friends.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can recite the preamble of the constitution from memory.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Visit Italy
2. See Kendrick Lamar in concert
3. Meet a celebrity

Who do you find inspiring?
My dad. After he was diagnosed with cancer, he’s inspired me to never take anything for granted and stay positive through hardships.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
My positivity and sense of humor through hard times.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Another fun fact about me is I am also a part of my high school’s girls flag football program. I even got to meet some of the Cleveland Browns’ players during my playoff games.

What do you love most about being in the NHS?
The one thing I love the most about being in the NHS is meeting many amazing people who are talented, smart, and eager for the next chapter in their life. They’re very inspiring and wonderful people! Another thing I love about being in the NHS is the fun activities we get to do, whilst helping the community out at the same time.

What service project within the NHS has been most rewarding for you?
A service project within the NHS that was the most rewarding for me and the rest of us NHS members was the Empty Bowls event that took place at our high school. Empty Bowls is an event that takes place annually at Moline High School and its main focus is to raise money for local food banks and soup kitchens. This event was rewarding to us because we were able to reach over $1,500+ during it!

What leadership opportunities have you had within these organizations?
One leadership opportunity that I’ve had was in the NHS during the holiday season. We were tasked with decorating the school with holiday decorations and for the upcoming ShareJoys holiday event. Most of us got sent throughout the school as groups. I ended up being the leader for my group that day. We took care of the problems and challenges we faced, and we got to make the school jolly while doing so!

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality has got to be either Transparency or Active-Listening. It’s always a great idea to be transparent with those you’re working with and always hearing their inputs and thoughts on the matter. Teamwork makes the dreamwork!

What do you do specifically with DEA Drug Take Back days?
During the DEA Drug Take Back days, people would do drive-by drop offs at our local police department to properly dispose of medications and/or drugs that they no longer need. During this event, my job is to direct traffic, restock the drop-off bin with bags, and collect medications to be placed in the drop-off bin. It’s a great event to volunteer at because I get to meet amazing people all the time!

What is the Quad Cities Youth Conference and what have your roles and responsibilities been while volunteering there?
The Quad Cities Youth Conference is an event that takes place every year and usually lasts two days, one day for middle schoolers and the other for high schoolers. The event is held to help inspire teens around the QC metro area by exposing them to different workshops by people who are highly dedicated to the job they do. When I volunteered at the conference in 2023, I was given the responsibility of being the guide, social media photographer, and video editor for the keynote speaker that day.

What have you learned about yourself helping with this conference?
A thing that I did learn about myself while helping at the Quad Cities Youth Conference was that photography is something that now interests me. Before then, I didn’t really pay too much attention to photography or taking pictures. But now, I admire the work and effort professional photographers put into their work. I don’t know how to describe it, but being a social media photographer at the conference made something click in my mind, in a good way. Turns out, I like photography now!

What was your favorite class your senior year and what was the most interesting thing you learned?
It’s difficult to say, all of the classes during my senior year at MHS were very interesting! But the one I found interesting the most has got to be Computer Programming 2. In class, we were given multiple projects to work on during the course. It was similar to a tier ranking, from an easy programming language to a more challenging one later on. I found it interesting because I’ve never been in a class with a structure like that, it’s very cool! And, when we finished our projects, we got to share it with other peers in the classroom!

What made you choose Computer Science?
The thought of how computers work has always intrigued me. It seems simple on the surface but when you look into it, it’s another type of complex. I want to choose Computer Science as my career because I want to better understand how they work while also helping change the world with them. I also want to pursue Computer Science because programming video games is something I really love. Basically any type of programming for me is something that I want to continue on in my adulthood!

Picture
Photography by AJV Original

What advice do you have for underclassmen?
You choose your own future. Don’t let any outside factor change what you love to do. Take classes at your school that you know you’ll love. Just make sure to follow your dreams!

What are you most looking forward to doing at college - other than classes of course!
Meeting new and amazing people in life, new opportunities, and just anything incredible! I’m mainly more excited about the possibility of learning more about computers at school. That’s the one big thing I’m looking forward to the most.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would be on my computer, programming small video games. It’s a hobby that I love to do during my free time. It’s like a digital puzzle because there’s always a challenge when it comes to programming a video game, like code not working or something not working as expected. But it’s always rewarding when you fix it! That’s what I would do during my free time.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
A big thing that I’m super excited about that’s upcoming is college. It’s the first stepping stone into the real world and it’s exciting yet kind of scary at the same time. However, luckily, I’m mostly excited about it!

Ciera Akey

6/28/2023

Picture

Ciera Akey – Michigan
Nomination & Photography by Double Exposure Photography
Issue 69 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ciera Akey is an amazing student and athlete. She works hard at everything she does. Her kindness, motivation, and personality, naturally inspire people around her.
I started playing soccer when I was in first grade. What I love most about soccer is the sportsmanship, the hard work, and overall just playing the sport.

When we won the 3 titles, it was so relieving after all of the hard work my team put in. To win, we all had to show up and work hard. We decided if one team runs a mile, we would run two.

Once the game was over, everyone in the stands rushed the field. It was an amazing feeling, and we all celebrated by getting Dairy Queen and taking pictures.

What I love most about my team is the bond we all have. Not only on the field did we have a bond, but outside of our sports too.

The new record we set was winning all three of the titles: LVC conference champions, tournament champions, and finally, district champions.

I would love to have the chance to play for the United States women’s national soccer team. I’d love to play anywhere outside of the US.

To win academic honors, I had to grind all my schoolwork. I made sure to get all my work in on time; I even resorted to a tutor when I was stuck in math.

This accomplishment is proof of the hard work I put into school and how it pays off.

I am a very hard-working and driven person; on top of excelling in academics, I love to hang out with my friends and family and surround myself with people that make me happy. For a long time now, I've love all sorts of music genres and I love putting together outfits.

I am the youngest in the family of six. My family and I are very close; I have two sisters who are both in college and live with my parents.

One of my favorite family memories that I have is when my family and I took our boat to Chicago. We went on a ten day trip and had a lot of fun.

My friends would say that I’m very outgoing and go to whatever measures to support the people close to me. I value and cherish your relationships with friends, family, and others. I am very confident in who I am and that confidence and sense of self flows onto others when I’m around them.

I love to help those who aren’t as fortunate as me, and those that may need a ride somewhere, or help picking something up, those small things make my heart so full!!

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
My family immediate family is me, my mom, my dad, and I also have a half sister on my dads side, that is 17 years older than me. I am a mix between both of my parents!! I have many qualities that I take after each parent. I am very OCD like my dad, and I keep things organized. I like to be early/ on time like my dad. On the other hand, my mom is such a giving person. She looks out for me and others, and she has a big soul. She has a soft heart, and she is very compassionate!! I stand out in my family because I am very unique and I’m bold, both of my parents like to fit in, when they walk in a room, but I like to be the one that is always overdressed, or is wearing bright colors!!

Margot Phillips – Alabama
Nomination & Photography by Jennifer Jones Media
Issue 68 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Margot has been beyond a pleasure to take photos of this year. It has been such a delight to see her joy and maturity shine in every photo. She has worked for over 70 hours with various volunteer organizations in addition to creating a new fundraiser for the Birmingham humane society. She started the Birmingham Humane Society drive in 11th grade, and continued the drive during the next school year. Margot definitely has a heart and compassion for others but woven within this is her amazing ability to bring happiness and laughter to all.

Photography by Jennifer Jones Media

Tell us about your photographer, Jennifer Jones Media and why you wanted to work with her.
My photographer, Jennifer Jones, is one of my mother’s good friends because my brother and Jennifer's son were in a band together in high school. She also photographed special events at my school. Even before I knew her personally, I was amazed at the skills she possessed. She is by far the best photographer I know!

What community service projects have you worked on that meant the most to you?

I was a volunteer at our local Pink-Out-Run, which raises awareness for breast cancer. I have had many relatives and close family friends who have had breast cancer, and one of them even ran the race. I cheered the runners on and handed them water, along with showing off all of my pink accessories!

What leadership roles have you had volunteering?

In the past, I have been a group leader at Vacation Bible School. I loved getting to know the children in my groups and influencing them positively throughout the week, either in their faith or the way they treat others.

What new fundraiser did you create for the Birmingham Humane Society and why?
After adopting my dog in 10th grade, I discovered my love for animals and really wanted to help pets at the GBHS. So, for my school's Key Club spring drive, the club members were able to donate toys, food, treats, and even old towels.

What was the hardest part about getting it up and running, and what was the most rewarding?

The hardest part was advertising to the school. I was able to get the word out from flyers that I designed and taped in the hallways, and eventually we had over 20 donations. The most rewarding part of the drive was dropping off the boxes of donations at the shelter and the workers thanking me!

Where are you at with it now, and where do you hope to go with it in the future?

Right now, I still just want to keep going with donations, but hopefully my high school can keep it up and running, and maybe even expand it as I’ll be gone and won’t be able to start it.

What will you miss most about high school?

I’m going to miss the close relationships I had with my teachers. I loved my teachers in high school, and they were always so helpful to me. I am definitely going to continue keeping in touch with them throughout college!

What is a favorite family memory you'll never forget?
This past Christmas was a family memory that I’ll never forget. My two siblings are much older than me and lived in two different states. We were all finally together for Christmas, just the five of us, and it was just like how it was growing up. We made gingerbread houses and had our cousins judge them, and we watched classic Christmas movies all week.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I recently sang the song "Don't Rain on My Parade" from the Broadway musical "Funny Girl" in front of a 900 person audience in my high school's fundraising pageant. It was my first time ever singing in public, and no one knew that I could sing! It was such an amazing feeling to be recognized for my hidden talent.

What made you choose the song you sang for the fundraiser, and do you think you'll sing in public again?
I chose that specific song because Funny Girl is my favorite Broadway show. It's about a girl who is talented (but no one knows it), and she tries her hardest to be someone she's not. In the end she realizes that everyone likes her for who she really is. I definitely think I’ll sing in public again- I was in the school choir in 10th grade and was told that I have more of a Broadway voice, so I’ve been partial towards those types of songs.

What else would you like to talk about?
I am really excited about going to Auburn University in the fall. I absolutely love the campus and the community there. I'm majoring in Interior Design, and I am really looking forward to meeting new people and making friends!

What do you plan on doing first when you get to the University?
I am looking forward to meeting new people!  Before that though, I’m going to decorate my dorm and bathroom!

What class/es are you most excited to take?
I am really excited for the classes that are included in my Interior Design major. I have always had a passion for design, and I even interned for two interior designers in high school. I can’t wait to see how I do with real training!

Are there any clubs or organizations you already know you want to join?
I definitely want to join a few Bible studies, maybe even get involved in some service organizations and club sports!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could talk about a lot of things forever! My favorite things to talk about are my little white fluffy dog named Buddy, Taylor Swift, decorating, Christmas time, fashion, current events, food, and my faith.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me laying out on the beach listening to music or reading a book. Although I can’t get a natural tan, I still like to soak up the sun and maybe get a few freckles.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
College! I am so excited to be in my favorite place yet still close to home. I can’t wait to room with one of my best friends and make lifelong relationships with the people I meet on campus.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Getting over my fear of public speaking. I learned to speak to the crowd as if I were talking to myself, alone in my room in front of a mirror.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say to take every opportunity given to you, have faith in the future, and improve the things you struggle with.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be either owning my own interior design company or partnering with someone else's company.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love driving around, listening to music. It's very relaxing to me since I live in a woodsy area, and it's my time to think.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Besides singing, I think it's the way I can memorize lyrics quickly. I can hear a song once and know half of the lyrics if I really pay attention.

3 Things on your bucket list:
Run a marathon, meet Taylor Swift, and write a book.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom inspiring. She is the toughest woman I know, and whenever she faces something difficult, she comes out with a smile on her face. She has always believed in me and everything I can do.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my trust in God's plan for my life is inspiring. I have always had this firm trust in Him and I know that every decision I make, every person I meet, every place I go, was already planned before I was born.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I’m excited to be featured in this ITM issue! This is my first time being in a magazine!

Sydney McMahan

Picture

Sydney McMahan – Texas
Nomination by Cheryl McMahan
Photography by VJ Photography
Issue 68 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sydney McMahan is the living embodiment of the quote, “It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” In second grade, Sydney was diagnosed with a brainstem tumor. With the location and size, the prognosis wasn’t promising. After brain surgery, she was left without the ability to walk, talk or write. She could have given up, but her positive outlook kept her going - never taking her life for granted or situation too seriously. Sydney is now graduating high school and will attend Oklahoma State University in the fall, majoring in Civil Engineering.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’ve been through radiation, 4 brain surgeries, months of hospital stays, along with three major orthopedic surgeries from relearning how to walk.

What do you wish people knew about your diagnosis, treatment and recovery?
Having a brain tumor isn't contagious and it doesn't take away your personality or intelligence.  It does make a lot of things more challenging but someone that is undergoing or has undergone cancer therapies and surgeries is someone with a lot of resiliency.  While you may not understand what that person has gone through, they will likely be very understanding when things aren't going the best for you.

What was the hardest part of recovery, and what motivated you to continue?
Not every day is a good one.  Some days are just horrible and when you feel your worst, it's hard to understand how feeling soooo bad can ever lead you to healing.  However....  Just because life might be hard now, it doesn't mean that life will always be difficult.
Be honest with yourself and allow yourself to have good - and bad - days.  Just know that each day is special.

What else would you like to talk about?
I’m so much more than just what has happened to me. Yes, those things may have made life more difficult at times but everyone has their own struggles. If you can laugh at yourself and those struggles, life is pretty great.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever
My pets! I have two vizsla dogs and a big floofy rabbit. They are THE best laugh and snuggles anyone could ever ask for!

How did you find your photographer, VJ Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I am sooo thankful my mom found Valerie! My mom found her on Instagram through another’s senior photos. We knew she was the right person as soon as we met her. She listened and she got me! I wanted the pictures to show what I am about and who I am. She found locations that would allow me to be me and I loved it!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Just because life might be hard now, it doesn't mean that life will always be difficult.
Be honest with yourself, allow yourself to have good - and bad - days.

Iliana Schiffelbein

Picture

Iliana Schiffelbein – Colorado
Nomination & Photography by Everyday Moments Photography
Issue 68 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Iliana is, without a doubt, an inspiring young woman. When I first met her, her quiet gentle spirit along with that pretty smile just won me over instantly! Iliana has a passion for dance and theater. Iliana is a model student-working hard in classes and also seen in her dedication to her school and her community with active involvement in both. As my camera lens began to capture Iliana, I could see the grace and beauty she exudes from the inside out into the world. Her heart certainly radiates warmth to all those lucky enough to be around her.

Photography by Everyday Moments Photography

What would you like to talk about first?
It was already briefly mentioned but I would love to explore further my personal acting and dance experience. I have danced from the age of two and also have taken vocal and acting classes throughout my life as well as been in a handful of shows.

Tell us about your dance career.
My parents enrolled me in dance at my preschool at the age of two. I found a studio I loved around the age of five and stuck with it for a lot time until they unfortunately closed. After years of working hard I got on pointe but after covid and an injury moved on from ballet and joined a dance team. Ever since I have bend focused on developing my art away from the classical sense and into a more performative style that I can hopefully find a job in later in life!

What dances do you study, and which is your favorite? Why?
I have studied almost every type of dance that you can think of including ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. My favorites are definitely contemporary and lyrical because I love the way that I can feel the music more than with other styles and show more emotion and character. Hip hop is also a lot of fun for a lot of the same reasons and because the crowds get really into it and it’s motivating to get that feedback and support as I dance. Dance styles that allow me to have some creative freedom and character work are my favorites.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
My greatest accomplishment that I gained from dance was learning how to overcome difficult situations as make the best out of them.

How did you find your photographer, Everyday Moments Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer after a few friends had taken pictures with her. I was also invited to be a part of her model team for the 2023 year which has been an amazing experience so far and I am so grateful to be a part of! Being behind a camera is one of my favorite things especially when doing more candid shots because I feel like I can let parts of my personality shine through and it also helps me to grow more confidence with myself.

What have your roles been in theater?

I have had quite a few roles in theater, a lot of which were ensemble and featured dancer. However I have had a couple main characters including Alice in Journey Through Wonderland (sadly canceled because of covid) and Lina Lamont in Singing in the Rain.

Which was your favorite and why?
My favorite character that I have ever played was Lina Lamont. Even though there was not a lot of dancing it was amazing to play a character that had so much personality and that I got to do more character work, something that I absolutely adore.

If you could be any character in any play on Broadway, who would you be and why?
I would want to play Anastasia from the musical by the same name even if it is off Broadway now. I love her story line and the emotional intensity that she has and builds throughout the show. The songs are amazing as well as being based on, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating stories in history.

What do you think non performers may not know about performing?
I think a lot of people may not know how much work goes into everything that goes into performing. Objectively we can see that this is a very hard song but there is so much behind the scenes work that goes on which people have dedicated their life to. Years of classes, long hours, people working on sets, all are fact . Most even struggle mentally with the toll it takes on a person and I think that more people need to be aware of that and not be so hard on performers.

What was your favorite class this year and what was the most interesting thing you learned?
My favorite class this year was European History because I got to learn about something unrelated to me but yet still really cool.

What do you love about being involved in your community?
One of my favorite things to do is to do community service! I volunteer at the soup kitchen almost once a month and also perform theater for title one schools and families with life threatening illness. I love doing this because it really makes me feel like I am giving something back to the community that has given me so much!

Picture

What is another way you are involved in school?
I am also on the Student Council at my school and would like to run for Philanthropy chair my junior year.

What are your roles and responsibilities on the Student Council?
Last year I was just a part of the general assembly and did not have a leadership position. I mostly helped to paint posters and work at fundraisers and basically helped with all those menial tasks though we all would share ideas and work together when making big decisions such as a theme for a school dance.

What are you most proud of having accomplished being in the Student Council?
I am most proud of being a part on Mr.PR at my school this year. It is like a pageant show for senior boys to help raise money for make a wish. This year we raised over 8,000 dollars on this one night and I am very proud to be a part of the team that coordinated this.

What do you hope to achieve if you gain the Philanthropy chair?
I really want to do even more fundraisers for the school and make the entire student body as well as the community involved. Right now things are done by a select few students and clubs but I think that we are capable of creating a community that wants to get involved in these things if we just make them a little more exciting. We also are in a small town so I think that we could do more advertising to places like churches and restaurants to create these ties and gain better outcomes.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would also really love to discuss things like personal body image, which is something I have really struggled with, so that maybe I can help someone else out in a similar situation.

Please tell us more.
In dance there is always such a culture of being very thin and in shape. You look at yourself in a mirror all day, so it is very natural to criticize yourself. I developed a sort of eating disorder later because of this but I do want people to know that no matter what you do you do not need to look like all the people around you and it has nothing to do with your self worth.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
One thing that I could talk about forever is criminal justice. Both my parents work in this field so it has been something that I have been around and experienced from a very young age. I love talking about the process of law and all the ways that it can be applied. Forensic science especially interests me as well because of the way that it is all one big puzzle to solve! There are so many different fields to research and explore. I feel that I could never get bored!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would probably find me either reading or writing. I love being transported into a different world or learning about something new and also love dumping my own thoughts, feelings, and ideas onto paper!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am traveling a lot this summer and cannot wait to experience different countries and make new memories!

My favorite subject my senior year was art class, I liked working with clay and making all types of different sculptures with the help of my thoughtful teacher.

I have enjoyed serving as captain for both my track and volleyball teams; getting to influence my team in a positive manner was a great opportunity to learn leadership skills. I am also very proud of my work as a peer leader of Foster’s Voice Suicide Awareness club at my high school.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I look forward to working this summer, not only will I make some money, but I will also gain valuable life experience via the tasks I will accomplish and by talking to new people.

My family is very supportive, they do everything that they can to help me succeed. I fit in quite well as the youngest of two siblings whom I get along with very nicely. Lastly, I stand out by circumstance, as I am the only daughter.

3 Things on your bucket list:
First, I’d want to go skydiving to feel the adrenaline rush, and to feel like I’m flying through the sky. Second on the list is having my own business related to my art creations. Lastly, I want to have my own garden, or jungle, full of plants to help support the ecosystem.

Victoria Robinson

6/6/2023

Picture

Victoria Robinson - North Carolina
Nomination by Deana Robinson
Photography by Sullivan Blue Photography
Issue 68 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Victoria Robinson is a 15 year old honor roll student athlete and plays competitive volleyball. Tori has been awarded 8 Presidential Volunteer Service Awards through her platform Fighting Childhood Hunger and is the recipient of the Governor's Medallion Award for her passion for service. Through her non-profit organization Tori's Lemon-AIDE, she has donated over 10,000 pounds of food to community outreach centers. She built/donated a blessing box to her middle school where she continues to fundraise to keep it stocked. She is a Jr. Board Member of Fostering Faith Foundation which benefits foster children in NC. Tori is exceptional.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My inspiration for community service came from a story on the news when I was in elementary school. The story was about children in my community who may not have food to eat so I asked my mom what we could do to help. I organized a food drive at school to collect non-perishable items. To meet my goal, I set up a Lemonade stand in front of my house. By doing this I was able to surpass my goal of 500 items. That is when we decided to build a traveling lemonade stand and call it Tori’s Lemon-AIDE.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like everyone to know that I am just a teenage girl who loves volleyball, cheering, spending time with family and friends, traveling, shopping, and doing all things fun. I am just a normal teenager who wants to do what I can to make our community a better place. I hope to encourage others to become involved and give back in their own special way. Everyone has something to give, even if it is just a smile.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My passion is giving back to my community. I love to tell my story about how and why I became involved in giving back. I created my own non-profit organization, Tori’s Lemon-AIDE which has enabled me to give back to many community outreach organizations. I am also a Jr. Board member with Fostering Faith Foundation who provides services to foster families. I love giving back, whether it is stocking my Blessing Box I built and donated, working with foster families, or just stopping by and providing a meal to a fire station. Giving back is so rewarding.

How did you find your photographer, Sullivan Blue Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found Sullivan Blue via social media, and she photographed many of my friends. I had a wonderful experience with Mrs. Lindsey. She made me feel beautiful and was very patient and assisted me with how to model to get the perfect shots. I loved the entire experience.

A member of countless committees, charitable activities and Special Olympics/Unified Sports. What about being your class president for five years in a row has been so rewarding for you?
Since middle school I've served in an elected position within Student Council; first Vice President in the 7th grade then President in the 8th grade. I've continued serving in the role of Class President ever since. I will be entering my senior year in the fall and serving my fifth consecutive year in this role. It is very rewarding to me that my administrators and peers recognize my leadership and trust me to serve in this role. I am honored to represent my school and take this responsibility very seriously.

What is your proudest accomplishment as president?
Although there have been many proud moments in my role as Class President, I believe my proudest moment has yet to come and will be addressing my senior class at our graduation ceremony. As an honors English student I enjoy writing and consider this to be one of my greatest strengths. I look forward to preparing and delivering my speech to the Class of 2024.

Tell us about a couple of your favorite committees you are on and what you do in each.
Having been an active participant of Peer Leadership, No Place for Hate and Students against Drunk Driving, I participate in meetings, fundraising, and activities outside of school to help benefit these committees.

What service project has meant the most to you and why?
My favorite service project is participating in the St. Anne's preschool gift exchange every year alongside my cheerleading team. I enjoy shopping for gifts to give to the children. The happiness this brings to them makes this by far my favorite.

What do you do for the Special Olympics/Unified sports and why do you love being involved?
I run the Unified Cheer Program. My role as cheer coach is to provide an all inclusive, fun and rewarding experience to all participants. We practice alongside the basketball team. During practice I teach cheers and sidelines to be performed during the Unified basketball games. I love everything about this program. I love the joy I see that it brings to all those who participate, both on and off the basketball court. It is by far the most rewarding experience I've ever been a part of. This is my third year participating.

Tell us about your cheer squad for special needs students. How did you get it started, what was the hardest part about putting it together and what has been your favorite moment so far?
When I first joined the Unified Program as a helper on the basketball team, I thoroughly enjoyed working with all the athletes. Having never played basketball myself, at first I didn't think I'd be much of a contribution to the team, however, I quickly learned that it is more about the encouragement and support I was bringing to the team then my ability on the court. I recognized a need for a cheer team and put a plan in place to make it happen. I pitched my idea to the coaches and school administrators and the following year a cheer team was created. The hardest part was getting the program started, but now in its second year, it continues to be a welcomed addition to Unified Sports. My favorite moment so far has been the bond that I've formed with so many of the athletes. Being a part of this incredible program has made me consider a possible career in Special Education.

What is your leadership style?
My leadership style is to lead by example. If I have a platform then I am going to use it to be a positive influence and role model.

What is your best leadership quality?
My best leadership quality is that I am a good problem solver and listener. Everyone who knows me knows that I am someone they can count on to help them in any way.

What do you have planned for your summer before senior year?
I will be attending an NCA Cheer Camp over the summer as well as camping and taking small trips with family and friends.

Where is your favorite place to travel and why?
I love traveling to the Caribbean. I was fortunate enough to have spent the last two summers taking trips with my mom. We went to Aruba and Turks and Caicos. Our time together was so peaceful and relaxing. I thoroughly enjoyed both places and would love the opportunity to go back someday.

Picture

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
My favorite family tradition is our Thanksgiving meal. It is quality time spent with family. I am grateful for my grandparents and cherish my time with them listening to the stories they tell about growing up.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I pride myself on being a kind, compassionate and caring person who sees the good in everyone. Chosen recipient of numerous leadership and citizenship awards, it is helping others that fulfills me the most. I believe the most inspiring thing about me is the pure joy I give to everyone. Viewed not only as a leader, but also someone trustworthy. My biggest accomplishment will always be helping others, and if I can say I've managed to help even just one person in need, then I've been successful.

What else would you like to talk about?
I'd like to talk about how I did not have to be the classic "mean girl" in high school to get to my achieved status. Becoming Class President, I have noticed I was not followed because of intimidation, but rather admiration. I am viewed as a fair, kind, and personable leader that all can talk to. I take pride in this as I know many cannot say the same. Being a nice person will truly bring the best for yourself and those around you.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel passionate about being kind to all and never judging anyone. I am a strong believer that you never know what one is going through. I see the negative effect bullying has on so many individuals in my school simply because of one harsh or crude comment. Imagine what multiple comments do to one's mental health and self-esteem. By promoting kindness for all, we as a community can help to minimize negative behavior. Simply put, one less comment could potentially save someone's life.

How did you find your photographer?
My photographer is actually my mom! I find so much joy in getting photographed by her as I see her happiness grow by the picture. She takes so much pride in her work, and I am so happy to be able to give her an opportunity to take photos. Photography has always been a passion of hers, and I am so proud of how she has stuck with it and followed her heart to do what she loves.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it, you would find me shopping everywhere and anywhere. I've always had a passion for fashion. Fashion is one of the many things that you can truly customize to yourself and use as an outlet for expression. I find it relaxing, joyful, and overall one of my favorite activities to participate in.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?

I am super excited about seeing Pink in concert for the second time this fall. She was my first concert and she was amazing. I love how passionate she is about what she believes in.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I've ever accomplished is overcoming an eating disorder. Once I put my mind on recovery, it was a clear path to success.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give is to never let negativity or other peoples opinions get to you. Others opinions mean absolutely nothing. Stay true to who you are.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself with my own successful business. I've always wanted to work hard to achieve my goals and be my own boss.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to cook! Baking sweets is my favorite pastime. A fun fact about me is that I started a baking business during the Covid pandemic!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is reading people. I can always sense what mood people are in and conform to whatever comfort they need.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list would be traveling the world, being successful enough to be able to donate to many worthy organizations, and to have a platform to speak to as many kids struggling as possible.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom inspiring. As much as she is going through or enduring, she always puts a smile on her face and shows up for her family.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe what inspires others is my determination and drive. Many people always ask me how I endure as much as I do, and I am glad I can be a role model in that way. I pride myself on being a good student academically on the high honor role and encourage and motivate others to always do their best. I just received an award for academic achievement and for being an engaged member of my school and community from High Point University.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I have two little five pound Shih Tzu dogs that fulfill my life. They are therapeutic, lively, and always an amazing sight to come home to. Their names are Lola and Chloe.

Braelyn Arnold – Pennsylvania
Nomination & Photography by L. Welsh Photography, LLC

Nomination: Braelyn Arnold is inspiring to me because by 17 she was already licensed to work in a salon and has taken advantage of these years to hone in on those amazing skills! Braelyn will be continuing to work at the salon while going to college. She has twirled for 7 years (4 as a Majorette and 4 on the Competition team) and has cheered for a total of 11 years, 5 through her high school. 3/5 as a Captain and on Varsity 10, 11, and 12th grade! What do you love about working in a salon and what exactly do you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and have had my license since my Junior year of high school. My favorite services are updos, foilin, and coloring hair. I am also an assistant to the other stylists. I love having a career that is different every day and that is a continuous learning experience.

What do you excel at in the salon?
I excel at customer service. I'm a very talkative and outgoing individual so I really enjoy getting to know my clients.

What have you learned about yourself in the workforce?
I have learned that I am a perfectionist. I take pride in my work and want my clients to love their hair. I've learned that I'm better working as a team than individually, yet, I'm very independent, efficient and a self starter.

Photography by Breanne Arnold

Tell us about your twirl career.
I started twirling in sixth grade. I never planned on going far with it until my coach and instructor invited me to perform on the studio's competition team. I competed for 4 years and tried out for our marching band's majorette squad my Freshman year. I have twirled throughout my Senior year and just completed my final parade of my career on Memorial Day.

What led you to cheering and what do you love most about it?
I started cheering when I was in kindergarten, then when I was finally old enough to join our midget squads, once I started, I never stopped! My neighbor was a high school cheerleader and I admired her. I love the friendships and comradery. I love creating and teaching the dances to my team. Cheer takes teamwork and dedication and I love that it's finally being recognized as a sport.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
I have several, but I always loved the away game bus rides and playing music and dancing and singing on the bus. My other favorite memory is how our team supported our friend and teammate who was diagnosed with cancer going into our Freshman year, and helping her to fight and beat leukemia.

What did it mean to you to become Captain? What were your roles and responsibilities?
It meant everything because it was everything I had dreamt of and worked for in all of my years cheering. I was responsible for choreographing and teaching dances and routines to my team, creating special event t-shirts for the squad and communication between my coach and the team, just to name a few.

What is your best leadership quality?
I'm a good problem solver and a team leader. I bring positivity and fun to my squad.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I live with my parents, Doug and Breanne. I have a twin brother, Grant and a younger brother who is 14, named Bryce. I fit in because I have learned to be easy going having two siblings who are brothers, yet I stand out because I am the only girl and I participate in the most activities.

What is a favorite family memory or tradition you hope never ends?
My family plays "The Night Before Christmas" every year, where my Grammy reads the story and we pass gifts around a circle every time she says the word "and". It's a fun tradition and something the whole family looks forward to each year.

What do you like to do most with your friends?
We love going to Buffalo Wild Wings and Target. It is something my Majorette friends and I try to do together often.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have had to withstand dealing with people who are not true friends. It has made me an inspiring person, because I choose not to be like those people. I want to inspire kids and adults alike to be kind to everyone, that we may be different from each other, but that we all deserve to be treated equally.

Tell us about your softball career.
Throughout my 14 years on the softball field, I’ve received so much support for whatever my dreams were. As a little girl all I wanted to do is have some fun and play softball. As time has gone on, I continued to do what I love, and it has got me to this point. The hours of hard work and dedication I put into this sport is unreal. The work I put in has paid off and that’s why I’m glad to say I’m at WVSSAC Triple-A State Champion. I will be able to continue my love for the game at the next level.

What position do you play and what do you love most about it?
As a little girl I wanted to be able to make an impact on the game. When I was 10 years old, I decided I wanted to get into pitching. With being a pitcher comes a boat load of hard work, dedication, and responsibility, but it was worth it. I love pitching because it makes me feel in control of the game. It is one of the reasons I love the game so much.

Tell us more about the awards you've received in softball.
I’ve been blessed with several awards over my softball career. During my time at John Marshall High School our team has made it to the state tournament three times while not having my freshman year due to COVID. Being at the state tournament three time I’ve been honored with All Tournament Team for my stats. Along with OVAC 5A first team for my stats in our conference play. For two years in a row, I’ve been named Captain of the All Valley Team for my pitching stats. I’m extremely blessed to be named First Team All-State in all of West Virginia for the stats I’ve put up during my seasons.

What do you love most about helping younger kids learn softball? And what is a lesson you try to teach that you hope they'll never forget?
What I love most about working with younger girls is sharing my knowledge of the game with them. They are the future of our community and to be role model in their lives is extremely important to me. They remind me of my little self and being eager to learn something new. I try and teach them to play the game for more than just themselves. Also, that we play the game of failure so we can’t give up when something knocks us down. Something I really stood by this year that anyone can take from is pressure is a privilege. I teach these girls that pressure means something good is coming along.

What are some of your favorite classes your senior year and what was the most interesting thing you learned?

Some of my favorite classes I took my senior year are Management and Accounting. Being at John Marshall I was provided classes I could take to find out what I wanted to do with my life. Over the course of four years, I discovered my love for business. These classes taught me that there is more to a business than what you see every day.

What is Paws for a Cause and what responsibilities do you have with it?
Each year during school an organization gets together for this event. Each student is presented a certain amount of money and a list of what their person needs and is expected to provide them with it. The responsibilities we have are making sure we provide these people with something they need. Making sure we can make someone’s day is extremely important to us.

What led you to help with Food for Funnel and how did you help?
What led me to get involved with Food for Funnel is to be involved in my community. Being able to help someone in need of food while participating with my friends is extremely important. Being a part of this event has showed me the kind of love people have for our community. Packing 15,000 bags for whoever needs it is inspiring.

What is Night to Shine and what did you love most about working with them?
Nigh to Shine was created by the Tim Tebow Foundation to host an event for special needs. This event is a prom that anyone with a living disability can participate in. Night to Shine is a celebration of God’s love for you and being able to crown each guest a king or queen. I enjoyed being able to experience the pure happiness each guest had.

What did you do during Community Field Day?
During community field day some older girls from our high school go to a local softball field and help run this event. During this event every team in this organization competes against each other in different skills competitions. We can help kids one on one throughout the day. While I was there, I oversaw the homerun derby which kids hit the ball and scored a point wherever it landed.

Picture
Photography by AH Photography - April Hagedorn

What leadership roles have you had volunteering?
While volunteering I have been able to help out kids during community field day. I led and instructed them on the different tasks that they participated in.

What is your best leadership quality?
I feel like my best leadership quality is being able to help people get to their goal. I like to motivate people on the field and in everyday situations, so they can succeed.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do all day I would honestly just relax. I hardly get days off with softball, so being able to recover and get healthy is extremely important. In my free time I love watching college softball so if it was on that day that’s what I would be doing.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
In the summer I will be traveling for softball with some of my best friends. As I am starting college in the fall, I want to be able to enjoy my summer and make memories. Making sure I am prepared for what is up next for me is important. As I start the next chapter of my life playing at the next level I want to be prepared.

Who do you find inspiring?
Someone I find inspiring is my pitching coach, Cory Huminsky (Berliner). Cory was diagnosed carcinoid cancer at age 11 and fought through it and ended up playing Division 1 softball at the University of Pittsburgh. I cannot thank her enough for her guidance and everything she has done to help me sharpen my pitching skills.

I love learning all types of new things like history and science. I like forgiving the world out and how things work. Learning new information helps me understand the world more and having new information is super cool.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned this year?
The coolest things I’ve learned this year in my academic classes would have to be in History. We had learned all of the region of India and all of its cool past as well as the cultures and surrounding countries too.

When did you start playing basketball and where are you at with it now?
I started playing basketball the start of 7th grade. I started with a fall ball league in New Britain and now I’ve grown so much. I now play AAU basketball with that same team, The Midstate Lady Raiders.

My favorite memories from basketball are always hotels and traveling with my team. We all have a great bond from spending all of that time together. We eat together, watch movies with each other and obviously play together too!

What do you love most about volleyball and what position do you play?
I’m a right side hitter in volleyball and although I just started I love the support in volleyball. No matter if you mess up or do something great the team comes together and reassured that mistakes happen and you’re doing great.

My family is very supportive and extroverted. We all have very strong personalities and get along well. I always feel like I fit in with them and I can relate to them too. They’re always there to listen to me and help me through things.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Every Christmas Eve since before my time, my mom’s side of the family spends Christmas eve together. We order pizza, open gifts and all bake sweet treats together. My mom has carried this tradition on from my Great grandmother Claire and I hope it never ends because it’s a beautiful thing our family does.

What leadership qualities are your best?
I feel like my best leadership qualities include communication, creativity, active listening, and most of all honesty. It’s important to me to be honest with people no matter what and listen to what others have to say as well.

How would your friends describe you?

Sabrina Bishop

Sabrina Bishop - Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by Amy Weathers Photography
Issue 68 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sabrina Bishop is probably the most outgoing and genuine senior I've had the opportunity to work with. Everyone she meets loves her which is why she is always voted on homecoming court and to serve as their class president, but it doesn't stop there. Sabrina graduated first in her class with a 4.56 Cumulative GPA, was awarded the LSU Flagship Scholarship, Teagle Foundation Merit & EFCU Financial Merit Scholarships. She managed this while still being an active part of her cheerleading and powerlifting teams as well as working part time at a local restaurant. She's inclusive and makes everyone proud!

What does it mean to you to be voted on the homecoming court every year?
To be voted on the homecoming court every year to me speaks to how I am perceived by my peers. It means a lot to me to know that the person who I am working to become is being noticed by those surrounding me and encourages me to continue to strive to become the best version of myself that I could possibly be.

What are your roles and responsibilities as class president?
As class president, I am the sole voice of the Class of 2023 at Denham Springs High School. My role includes providing a consensus to represent all of my classmates and my responsibilities include organizing any class activities. I was also the main line of communication between the student body and the administration.

What are you most proud of achieving in your senior year?
In my senior year, I am most proud of my 4.5625 Cumulative GPA. This is not because of a number used to compare against others, or because it is a quantitative measure of accomplishment. It is for me however,  a non-disputable representation of my hard work. Over the past four years, I have spent countless hours studying and learning. I have sacrificed time with family and friends, working, sleeping, even doing things I love, all for my school work. I am proud of this simple number because it helps me recognize that all of it was worth the struggle.

Why is having such a high GPA important to you?
A high GPA is so important to me for a couple of reasons. For one, I think it is very important to put my best foot forward in my classes and give my best ability, I always strive for A's and therefore a high GPA represents my hard work. I also feel that a high GPA represents my character. Since AP classes give the extra quality point that excels a GPA, I believe it shows that I am one to push my self and not take the easy road. I look towards the future by having the ability to gain college credit and exposure to difficult material.

Picture
Photography by Amy Weathers Photography

What was your favorite class this year, and what was the most interesting thing you learned?
My favorite class this year was AP English Literature. While I usually tend to lean towards math and science classes, this year I was able to see English in a different light. The most interesting thing I learned was about the composition of a plot and how an author can analyze minute details and influence meaning onto them.

Tell us about the LSU Flagship Scholarship, the Teagle Foundation Merit Scholarship, and the EFCU Financial Merit Scholarship and what you needed to do to receive them.
In order to receive the LSU Flagship Scholarship I needed to have a 3.5 accumulative GPA in high school. For the Teagle Foundation Merit Scholarship, I applied with all of my extracurriculars, GPA, AP scores, ACT scores, and any leadership positions I have held. The EFCU Merit Scholarship was based on my GPA, ACT, community service involvement, and an essay answering the prompt of "If you had $1,000 to donate to any local organization which one would it be and why?".

What have you learned about yourself while applying for/receiving such honors?
Something I have learned about myself while applying for and receiving such honors would be that I am capable of much more than I thought I might have previously believed myself to be. I have pushed myself to a lot of limits and have found that even though I might not have met every goal, I have learned how to celebrate my victories and learn from my shortcomings.

Tell us about your cheer career.
I did dance and gymnastics throughout  elementary school. Moving into junior high, I wanted to be a part of a school team. Sixth grade I made the cheer team and a year and a half later, my friends asked me to fill in on a competition team,  so I tried out and made that. I continued to do school and competition cheer up until my junior year of High School. After my junior year, I decided not to try out for my Senior year. I became unhappy with the sport and decided to pursue powerlifting, loved every minute and couldn’t have been happier.

What did you love best about being on the cheer team?
What I loved most about being on the cheer team was the bond between a small group of girls you could form. A collective movement towards a common goal, and knowing that everyone there wants it just as much as you. Spending 6 days a week and countless hours together, with blood, sweat, and tears for it all to come together in the end.

What is your favorite part about being on the powerlifting team?
My favorite part about being on the powerlifting team is how accepting, uplifting, and encouraging an environment the team is. As well as, being surrounded and forming bonds with people you never would have thought you would be. Learning more about the people at your school from all different backgrounds and interests with one common thread, powerlifting.

What do you do at your local restaurant for work, and what have you learned about the general public as a result?
At the local restaurant, I have worked as a hostess, bar back, and now training as a server. One thing I have learned about the general public from working in the service industry for over 2 years is that you should always be kind to people regardless of their treatment towards you. I have come across many walks of life. I have seen customers come in that might be dealing with personal issues that will come off as rude at first but end up being extremely kind. Situations like this just go to show that you never really know what someone is going through.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My knowledge of the value of hard work. I have a family of six, and we are big on a do-it-yourself lifestyle. For example, our parents said if we wanted a pool we had to help, which is exactly what we did. We built our pool ourselves from start to finish. After countless late nights and literal blood, sweat, and tears, our pool was finished. This long journey made me truly appreciate the labor and hard work that goes into luxuries. It makes me think twice before asking for things because I understand that luxuries need to be earned.

What is your golf team like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
I loved my team we were all very close.

What is Rotary Interactive club and what do you do in it?
Project for our school and community.

What was most rewarding about being a member?

Helping people.

What are your roles and responsibilities in the student council?
I’m a representative.

What are you most proud of accomplishing in it?
I been in it all 4 years

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I've held a part time job for the past 3 years while exceeding academically and playing multiple sports. I was selected to the Indiana Elite North South Team in both basketball and golf. I love the outdoors which includes my love for hunting and fishing. I competed in competitive cheer and dance for 10 years. My grandma is my most admired person and a true role model.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have a deep love and interest in helping animals and younger children, so I'm enrolling in both pre-vet and elementary education.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I can always talk about my great dane Creed and English Bulldog Bentley. They are the craziest and most lovable pets anyone could ever have.

How did you find your photographer?
My parents knew Leslie and growing up and I've seen so many of her pictures on social media. I knew some other teens who had taken pictures with her and loved how she was able to capture their true identity.

What was your experience like?
It was the most relaxing and stress free time you could ever imagine. Leslie even put her boots on and walked 3 miles back to my hunting stand and took pictures which captured who I truly am.

What did you love most about it?
How imaginative Leslie was and her drive to make my sessions personal and meaningful. The night before every shoot felt like Christmas eve and I couldn't wait to wake up and see what the day would bring.
