Scarlett Bella Song – Texas
Nomination by Sasha Song
Photography by Tonya Turner Photography
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Scarlett Bella Song is a teen with a passion for dance, fashion, and advocating kindness. Scarlett is your relatable “everyday girl” who has her finger on the pulse of what’s trending. She loves spreading positive messages that promote compassion/empathy/inclusivity as well as enhance humanity. Scarlett recently collaborated on a teen jewelry collection with Annie and Sisters called “Annie x Scarlett.” The jewelry reflects an ethos of kindness and encouragement with words like "happiness," "courage,” "strength," and "love." Among other motifs, the pieces include yin yang symbols to represent harmony/interconnectedness and dandelion charms to evoke hope and joy.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would enjoy being interviewed about the collaboration Annie X Scarlett teen jewelry collection launching this month.
I would also be interested in discussing my passion for dance. As an emerging artist, I lead a dual life: I attend in-person independent school during the day and then head to the dance studio to train five hours (in contrast to many of my fellow pre-professional dance company friends who are home-schooled)
I would also be interested in discussing my fierce and unwavering interest in promoting kindness, advocating for inclusivity, and fighting the exploitation of others.

Tell us more about the collaboration with Annie X Scarlett teen jewelry. How did you get involved and what does it mean to you?
The Annie X Scarlett collection is my greatest accomplishment to date. It was an unexpected surprise that my initial discussion with Annie Chen (founder and owner of Annie and Sisters) would eventually resulted in the “Annie X Scarlett” teen jewelry collection.
Nine months ago, Annie had initially reached out to me when she came across my Instagram account (@scarlettbellasong). Annie DM’d me to invite me to collaborate with her company Annie and Sisters. The offer was pretty standard: free product in exchange for a social media story or post.
I researched the company and was impressed with what I learned. However, I respectfully declined because I didn’t feel I was the best fit influencer because the target market for Annie and Sisters target was 8-11 year olds.
As I always appreciate companies who reach out to me, I offered my opinion that I felt Annie might want to grow with her customer base and add a teen collection down the road. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine Annie would invite me to partner with her to create, design and launch her first teen collection. I felt so honored and said yes because I always had a strong interest in owning my own business and I knew I would learn so much from the experience.
When we started talking nine months ago, we were still in the midst of the global pandemic and I had been on online school for over a year in Los Angeles. My friends and I were feeling isolated and disconnected because we socialized online. We supported each other during this time by being optimistic and positive and I realized that it was important to extend that support to others.
When Annie and I had our first official meeting to determine what we hoped to achieve with the teen collection, it was a true meeting of the minds. We share the same values and aspirations: We both wanted to create a collection that was infused with meaning and that would uplift and empower tweens and teens. We wanted people who wore the jewelry to feel loved and supported by an inclusive community that fosters confidence, self-esteem and self-love. So, ultimately, the Annie X Scarlett jewelry collection was designed with love to unite people through friendship, positivity, and kindness.
I am so honored that Annie and Sisters chose to partner with me to design, produce, and launch their new Annie X Scarlett Tween & Teen Jewelry Collection. Ultimately, my experience turned into an internship in jewelry design and entrepreneurship.

Why did you choose Tonya Turner Photography as your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Tonya Turner Photography as my photographer because she is a brilliant talent, she has good character, and she embodies so many characteristics that I admire, including: professionalism, kindness, vision, patience and creativity. As a content creator, I partner with Tonya on different projects and I appreciate her as an artist and as a female entrepreneur.

Share with us your dance history. When did you get started, what do you love about it and what forms of dance do you love the most?
I joke that I was born to dance because I love to perform and entertain. Some of my earliest memories are of me dancing around to emulate my favorite popstars! My parents enrolled me in dance classes when I was two or three years old (so I wouldn’t hurt myself at home and I haven’t stopped dancing yet!
Initially, my parents had no idea that I would become serious about dance. They wanted to expose me to a variety of sports/arts/activities because what two year old really knows what they want to do with the rest of their life?!. So, in addition to triple threat classes (dancing, acting and singing), my parents enrolled me in art, soccer, swim, skiing, and ice hockey. However, once I joined dance companies and competition teams, I had to forgo these other activities due to the time commitment involved in pre-professional dance training.
I train in many dance styles and I’m always looking for opportunities to try something new and add to my dance vocabulary. Also, I go through “seasons” when it comes to my favorite dance styles. When I lived in Los Angeles and signed with MSA dance agency, I mainly trained in industry studios and focused on commercial dance. Now that I relocated to Dallas and joined DV8 The Company, my preferred styles are: Contemporary, Jazz Funk, Hip Hop, and Ballet.
My favorite things about dance are the feelings I get of unrestricted freedom and the opportunity for self-expression. I can tell a story and share my emotions when I dance. Also, the movement itself helps me release stress. I take academics very seriously and stress out about college and my future. Going to the dance studio for five hours after a full day of school somehow helps to relieve my stress (even though it makes my days very long and I am often up late studying and doing homework).

What is a major accomplishment for you with dance?
My earliest accomplishment has been my most memorable so far. When I was seven years old I had my first opportunity to perform with professional NFL cheerleaders for a fundraising event. It was a beautiful way to leverage my talent while giving back to the community. The experience made me realize that both entertainment and service are my calling.

What is a favorite memory from a dance competition?
I just created my favorite dance competition memory so far this past weekend. Last weekend was my first time competing in group dances in four years. (Four years ago, I broke my leg skiing and I decided to focus on commercial/industry dance once I recovered.) This past weekend, the judges awarded our group dances high adjudications. As the newest member of the dance company, I’ve only been dancing with my peers for a few month while the rest of them have been competing together for several years. It was so rewarding to rise to the occasion and fit in. My greatest concern was potentially being a weak link and letting others down. I was so relieved and fulfilled when we danced together harmoniously and I contributed to our shared successes.

What do you love about your dance studio/fellow dancers?
What I love most about my dance studio and fellow dancers are the camaraderie and friendship we share. To dance together, we have to be in complete sync with each other. We also need to be vulnerable and trust one another. There is a strong connection among us and we depend upon each other to achieve common goals. Ultimately, we feel like a family.

How do you promote kindness and advocate for inclusivity?
I consistently leverage my social media platform to promote kindness and inclusivity. I am a brand ambassador for tween/teen brands (such as Annie and Sisters and Sugar LuLu) that advocate for kindness and inclusivity. I am also a co-designer and spokesperson for Annie X Scarlett which is an inspirational jewelry line that encourages kindness, inclusiveness, self-love and empowerment.
As a frequent “newcomer” to new groups, environments, and situations throughout my life, I know how vitally important it is to welcome and embrace others. As a member of the AAPI community, I personally experienced racism during the pandemic and it strengthened my resolve to advocate for inclusivity. I am a firm believer that diversity of thought and experiences enrich our community and it is my mission to embrace my humanity in all aspects of my life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One of my greatest opportunities in life has been to travel and experience different cultures. Prior to the global pandemic, I was very fortunate to visit 16 countries. Once the world is safe for fluid travel, I hope to visit many more countries because it broadens my perspective and understanding of the world.
I’ve lived in five States across the US and attended several different schools. These experiences taught me how to acclimate to new environments and foster new friendships. Knowing what it feels like to be an “outsider,” I never forget how important empathy, kindness and inclusivity are for humanity.

Where has been your favorite place to travel to and why?
My last international trip prior to the pandemic was to South Korea and it was turned out to be my favorite destination so far. My father’s side of the family is originally from South Korea (and they emigrated to the United States in the 1970’s). The trip was particularly meaningful to me because I developed a stronger connection to my culture and a better understanding of my family‘s origin. I also love the food, fashion, music and culture. (As an avid K-pop fan, I was particularly excited to train in an industry dance studio in Seoul.)
Now that I visited South Korea, I can’t wait to return to Asia and explore new countries. At the top of my list is Japan. My parents visited before and I was fascinated by their vacation photos and stories. I also hope to visit Switzerland and Zimbabwe one day. My mom studied abroad in Zimbabwe during college and she lived/ worked as an expatriate in Switzerland as a management consultant. I think seeing the places she visited would bring her stories more to life for me.

What is a favorite memory from travel?
During the pandemic, my family and I traveled to Mexico where we could be remote and safely social distance. One of my favorite memories from that trip was rappeling in cenotes in Cancun, Mexico. (Cenotes are natural sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater.) My second favorite memory from that trip was catching a trophy fish during a deep-sea fishing excursion. It took me 25 minutes to reel in the fish and I promptly fell asleep afterwards.

What states have you lived in and what about one of them did you find most surprising?
I was born in New York but lived in New Jersey until I was three years old. Right before my brother was born, my dad accepted a new job in Massachusetts, and we moved there in time for me to start pre-school. After I completed kindergarten, we moved to northern Virginia (and lived outside of Washington DC). For my last year of elementary school, we relocated to California. Then, this past summer, we relocated to Texas.
What I found most surprising is that I could enjoy living anywhere if I have my family and I make good friends. I realized that my connection to people trumps geography.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
One topic I could discuss is bullying and exclusion. I can talk about it from my personal experience as the target of coordinated smear campaigns and blacklisting. By sharing my experience, I would try to offer others who are being bullied some support, insight, and hope.
Prior to moving to Texas, I had lived in Los Angeles where I trained in high profile commercial dance studios. Once I signed with agents, the backlash was immediate and terrifying. I had to endure bullying, intimidation, manipulation for three years and had to find inner strength to endure.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever had to accomplish was balancing all the priorities in my life. While I have a rich and fulfilling life outside of school, I am constantly juggling all my responsibilities. I take on a lot more than my home-schooled dance peers and I take on a lot more than my school friends. Sometimes I feel like a lead a double life, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to believe in yourself and to exercise your autonomy. Living in LA, I observed people relinquishing their power and freedom to people who want to dominate, manipulate, and marginalize them. I fought the system, and I will continue to do so to protect others who deserve opportunities. I want to stand up against the exploitation of others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I see myself in pursuing a dual degree in business (or journalism) and dance (or drama). I also see myself as an entrepreneur supporting herself through school and as an advocate for kindness.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I am an avid reader! I especially enjoy historical fiction.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I am an open book and tend to broadcast my talents, so I don’t keep many hidden. I guess one hidden talent is that I am very good with little kids.

3 Things on your bucket list
I would love to continue traveling the world. I would also like to start my own charity or foundation. Finally, I would also like to start a family one day.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find so many people inspiring in all aspects of my life. I find myself gravitating towards female role models in dance, business, and entertainment.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope to inspire others who need a role model or proof point to help them take the next step in their own journey. I’m human, I’ve struggled, and my path hasn’t been a linear progression of success. I am real and genuine about my struggles, and I think my perseverance and humanity are inspirational and commendable. I am relatable, sincere, and vulnerable and anything I accomplished others can as well.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like to thank you for this opportunity to share my story with others. I think voices can be powerful and if my story can touch even just one person in a meaningful way, then I want to share it.

Hailey Jentz

Hailey Jentz – Wisconsin
Nomination & Photography by Candid Touch Photography & Design
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Hailey Jentz is the definition of inspiring. She is a model student, athlete, community member, dedicated Christian that serves her community, and has been crowned the Wisconsin Junior Angus Queen. All her accomplishments but Hailey is still humble, down to earth, and always ready to lend a hand to anyone that needs help. She is a true rising star, and I couldn't be prouder to nominate her for Inspiring Teen.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would want to be interviewed about my passions, interests, and involvements. I am very passionate about showing cattle, gymnastics, and my family/friends. I am very involved within these assets of my life. I show cattle all around the USA and make lifelong connections when at shows. I have been a gymnast since I was 3. I grew up watching my cousins compete and have loved it ever since. I always make time to hang out with my friends and family. Giving them time and support is important in my life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I would like to add my various leadership roles to my nomination. I am currently the president of Belmont Student Council, Belmont FFA, Pleasant View 4-H Club, and the Wisconsin Junior Angus Association. I am also currently the Wisconsin Junior Angus Queen and Co-Captain of my gymnastics team. These leadership roles inspire me to not only push myself but to support others to be the best unit we can be. I have learned many valuable traits from these positions that will strengthen my future endeavors.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
This past semester I took a high school college course where I had to give a speech on mental health. Since that speech, I have been more aware about mental health. I would present this topic to my peers to bring awareness to an invisible issue that is rising. I try my hardest to make sure people know the resources that are available to them. Everyone matters and should have a voice.

Faith Nestleroad

Faith Nestleroad – Ohio
Nomination & Photography by Memories by Tawnya Photography
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Faith is Inspiring because she wears her heart on her sleeve. She is passionate about helping others. Either it be a human or an animal. During this covid pandemic, she stepped up to get her license to become a nurses aide at a local nursing home all while going to school full time and playing sports. She is a member of the National Technical honor society, show choir, a Varsity Volleyball player and was accepted to into her dream college, University of Findlay in the honors program and pre-vet program.
Faith also helps her single mother at home watching over her younger sibling and takes on house hold chores.
Faith has also been an amazing Teen model for the MBT-419Seniors Team. She has been a dedicated model since the age of 14. Memories by Tawnya Photography couldn't be prouder of this Teen, She is a gem!

What should we know about you?
I feel that the magazine should know about how far I want to go to pursue my dreams instead of settling for something less!! From consistent work in high school, doing extra volunteer work that I enjoy, grabbing opportunities when I can! I feel that I have done very well to present myself in a manner of good sorts to colleges ,because of my work I do in high school and how I maintain good standings and work many hours. I am in Honor Societies, played sports, work lots of hours, and I’m also an ambassador as my school so I help create events and do volunteer services. I have done my best to create a nice smooth path for myself!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I feel my nomination gives light on my scholar accomplishments, but no so much my outside life. I feel the most inspiring thing about me would be my job and how I go about doing my job. I love my residents and the people I get to take care of on a daily basis! It has been eye opening to me on how all people should be treated and how much of an impact one 17 year old girl can make on peoples lives! It’s taught me patience and how to be caring towards all people and has made me feel purposeful. I couldn’t be more thankful for the way being an aid has taught me! It’s not an easy job either, not at all. I’ve been beat up, screamed at, dealt with deaths, watching people die. It’s been hard, but life changing and it has shown me that I can love something I never would have expected to. I have found a new love, and I never would have expected it to be a love of mine. I had one grandmother pass in the nursing home and then nursing homes scared me from that. But, through my school I have found myself livening the nurse aide life!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
It would be about the welfare of animals or the elderly population! This is because not only do I work as a licensed aid in a nursing home, but I have a strong feeling towards the well being of the elderly. I have gotten so close with so many residents. They almost become your best friend! So, when I know that not every one does their job they don’t receive the best care they could get. On top of that, I am going to the University Of Findlay for their pre-vet program so animals have a huge spot in my heart and my life, animals have been there through all my struggles and downfalls. I could talk about so many things such as, the wrong authorization of animals and why adopting is better than shopping for dogs. I have rescued all my dogs and the ones who don’t get rescued are the ones who sit in kennels and get euthanized.

Emma Shields

Picture

Emma Shields – Missouri
Nomination & Photography by Cara Hill Photography
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Emma Shields is an inspiration to all because she is motivated to achieve all her goals and is firm in her morals. Emma is unstoppable because she is courageous through adverse circumstances. In her athletic career, Emma has had two knee surgeries. Those injuries required her to put in hard work mentally and physically. She has a strong will that lets her take the first step towards amazing adventures. In her community she has volunteered at local blood drives and the nursing home. Emma is also inspirational in her academic successes remaining in the top 2% of her class. We are so proud of Emma!

What could you talk for every about?
I could talk forever about my new passion for radiologic sciences. Over the summer, I attended a healthcare camp at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy and was inspired to pursue a career in the healthcare field. One of the professors, Dr. Katherine Push, said, “I always want to remind myself to never forget when that lightbulb moment went off for me.” After hearing these empowering words, I made it a goal to find a career that gets my heart racing. I plan to attend Arkansas State University to study Radiation Therapy to help treat cancer patients.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
More inspirational aspects that my nomination does not cover include my ability to make everyone feel involved. I make it a priority to make sure everyone I meet feels loved and appreciated so they can grow in self-confidence. I also believe at school I have created a reputation of being approachable to underclassmen that are on my sports teams, in my classes, and at club events. They all look up to me as a leader that can answer their questions and use me for guidance.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I feel most passionate about presenting my faith in front of my peers. Sharing my testimony with my friends is important because it shapes my life. At my school, I gave a message at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting. I explained my struggle with self-worth, but how God’s love saved me through my dark time. I read my favorite verse 1st Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Students were touched by this verse and my walk with God. I loved making a life-changing impact on my classmates' lives.

Tell us about your soccer journey. When did you start, what position do you play and what do you love most about it?
When I started playing soccer, I was four years old. I have played year-round since then, except for 2 years. I have played almost every position, but my favorite is goalie. What I love the most is the competition and friendships I have made throughout the years.

What will you miss most about your soccer team?
I will miss the pre-game atmosphere that was created with my team. There was always such an uplifting attitude as we were getting ready together and listening to music.

What is the Animal Science program at your school and what interesting things are you learning in it?
At Maplewood Career Center, the Animal Science program is a 2-year hands-on program that focuses on small animals. We have a dog grooming lab that we can bring in customers’ dogs to bathe and groom. We also have 20 lab animals that we take care of throughout the year. This year we are learning some of the veterinary needs of our lab animals and practicing on them.

Tell us about Jennifer Grace Studios and what do you love most about the model team experience?
I was first introduced to the model team and Jenny through my best friend Ally. She was on Jenny’s team the year before me and told me how much she loved it so I decided to give it a shot. This was one of the best decisions and experiences I’ve ever done! I absolutely adore Jenny and her photos are phenomenal! My favorite part is the difference in scenery of every photoshoot and how Jenny makes my personality shine!

What else would you like to talk about?
I would love to talk about my hopes and dreams for the future. I could talk about my goals for hours! My biggest dream for the future is to become an exotic large cat veterinarian and move to Australia. I have always had a passion for saving animals. Eventually, I want to open my own animal rescue to help as many endangered species as possible.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am the president of pep club where I spread spirit around the school and get people excited for the sporting events. Being the president of pep club means that I help organize and plan out meetings. I paint the biggest signs that we need, and I also help give other members ideas for their signs. I help plan out fundraisers and events with our supervisor as well.

What is the best part of being president?
The best part is probably the bonds I form with the wide variety of our members. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet these people if I wasn’t in this club.

What has this leadership experience taught you?
One person cannot please everyone. Even though I would love to make everyone happy, that’s just not possible.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would choose wildlife as my topic and the ways to preserve our planet earth. I believe our responsibility as humans is to protect the planet that we live on.

What is something everyone can do right now to protect the planet we live on?
We can use as little plastic as possible. Roughly 8 million tons of plastic waste go into our oceans yearly. Reusing water bottles and limiting the use of plastic bags will help lower the plastic pollution caused every year.

What do you want us to know about you?
One thing you should know about me is my drive and passion to take care of others. I love nursing. It fills my heart when I know I have helped a patient or made them more comfortable.

What are you doing now to help prepare for this career?
I am now preparing for my State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) test. I am so excited! Additionally, through the “Advancement to Nursing” career technical program through my high school, I will be receiving college credits that I can take with me when I attend college in the fall.

What do you think will be the hardest part about your path to get there?
I think the hardest part about the path to reach my goals will be having self-confidence. However, I have my parents, peers, and teachers to encourage me to believe in myself. Anyone can do anything if they believe that they can!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
My topic would be Nursing. I love nursing and it is something I would like to do for the rest of my life.

Why did you choose David Caynor Photography as senior photographer? How did you prepare for it and what was your experience like? What did you love most about it?

What will you miss most about high school?

Something I will miss about high school is all my amazing teachers. They have always pushed me to keep going and have helped me in every way.

What is something you are known for at school?
I think I am known for being a social butterfly! I talk to everyone and try to make others feel included.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very outspoken. I am not a timid person. I always stand up for the things I believe in.

What is something you've stood your ground on that helped others see your point?
My best friend is a part of the LGBTQ+ community. There have been instances where others would make fun of him or talk badly about him for this reason. I have always stood up for him and explained to those people that a person’s sexuality should never be a reason to treat them differently.

Have you ever used this leadership skill in a way that has inspired others to take action, and if so, for what?
Once there was a girl in my nursing class that was crying. I was the first to talk to her and comfort her. My peers soon followed to help.

Nomination: Kaycie Liptak loves dance. That is number one in her life. I've had the joy to do a few photoshoots with her and I see firsthand the passion she has for it. Kaycie is a great student and school is a priority. Her pride is to be the best big sister to Drew, who has Cerebral Palsy. Kaycie loves everything Disney and loves to travel. Someday she either wants to be a NICU nurse or a medical malpractice lawyer.

What should we know about you?
I am super passionate about everything I get involved in. Especially dance, its my passion. I could spend hours doing it, it’s my way of expressing myself. I am super involved in dance and in school, and I always give 100% at whatever I do.

Tell us more about your dance career.
I started when I was 5 just because my parents wanted me to try a bunch of different sports. I instantly fell in love with performing and being on stage. I absolutely love the passion and emotion I get to put into my dancing. Whatever I am feeling there is a way to express it through dance. I do contemporary, lyrical, ballet, pointe, jazz, and poms.

What is a favorite memory from a dance competition?
My favorite memory was this past April, so I was still 16. It was Precision Arts Challenge, and it was our first competition that season that we traveled and stayed in a hotel. Over the course of the weekend was the first time I really connected with my duet partner, she is 3 years younger than me, so it was always hard but that weekend everything just clicked between us and she has been my best friend ever since. We even have another duet together this year!!

What is your biggest accomplishment from dance?
At nationals this past season I placed 15th out of over 70 other soloists. I also received a special judges award for my “Heart and Soul”. This was a huge accomplishment for me because I was at the young end of my age category and I went into it not expecting to do as well as I did so I was so proud of myself in that moment.

Why did you choose Michael Sullivan Photography as your photographer and what do you love about working with him?
I chose Michael Sullivan Photography because I had seen his work with a few other dancers from my studio and I was just in awe of how amazing all the pictures were. I love working with him because he is so willing to do anything just for a good shoot like going out in the freezing cold or laying on the ground just to get the angles. He also encourages me as a person to be the best I can which means a lot!!

Tell us about the beautiful snow photoshoot. What inspired it and how did you prepare? Walk us through the shoot - was it cold??
It was definitely a last-minute idea. We had talked about how cool it would be, but he just reached out to me a few days prior and just said there is supposed to be a big snowstorm this weekend, what do you think about getting out there? It was very cold; my pointe shoes were soaked from all the snow. We laughed a lot because in between pictures my mom would run over with rain boots to put over my dance shoes and a coat that I would just throw over.

What do you love most about your dance studio and instructors?
I love how they always push us to be the best we can be. Even if they are hard on us at times, they always remind us it is out of love. If we ever doubt ourselves, they are always there to support us. Our studio owners are a mom and daughter. The daughter is the main choreographer, and she is super young so it's great to have people who are closer to our age so they understand everything else we are going through.

What is something about being a dancer that non dancers may not realize?
How hard dance truly is. The whole point of dance is the artistry behind it and making it look effortless. No one sees all the literal blood, sweat, and tears that go into each performance. A lot of non-dancers also don’t understand that we practice 15+ hours a week for almost every month of the year for a few 2 and a half minute performances.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My little sister was born with special needs when I was six. Ever since then I have been completely changed on how I view the world and I try to help others learn about acceptance. When I was younger, I started a thing in my community with my mom where athletes would be paired with a kid with special needs from around the world and they would be able to dedicate their sporting events and achievements to them.

What do you enjoy doing most with your little sister?
Just spending time with her. She still loves our snuggle time. But I also love reading to her and playing games. Anything I can do to spend time with her I will.

Give us an example of a special needs child you were paired with and what you dedicated.
Before I decided to just be a dancer, I was also a super competitive swimmer. So, I was paired with a little boy named Alex who is around my sister's age. He has the same disabilities my sister does; HIE and Cerebral Palsy. I dedicated all my races to him and would write his name on my arm so everyone would know. We are still super close with him and his family and even go on vacations with them!

Picture
Photography by Michael Sullivan Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about acceptance especially for people with disabilities. Experiencing the way people treat others with disabilities firsthand was super eye opening for me. I could talk for hours to try and teach people acceptance and how to treat those with disabilities no different. Even though they might have a disability they are normal people and should be treated as such.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I plan on going to nursing school at a big college! After 4 years of college, I want to go back to become a neonatal or pediatric nurse practitioner.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Baking! It’s a super fun thing I enjoy doing. I’ve baked cakes and cupcakes for birthday parties.

Summer Daniel - Georgia
Nomination by Tonya Daniel
Photography by Adaire w/ Amy Honea Photography (above) &
Amy Honea Photography (below)
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Summer is an ambitious and focused young lady who has her eyes set on her goals and expectations in life. God uses her infectious smile, personality, and empathy to reach others who may be down, lonely or feeling forgotten. She is an Honor student at Evans High School where she completed all required high school requirements and credits by the 11th grade. She is in dual enrollment classes in High School / College where she is completing the required prerequisites and core classes to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Summer has dedicated her time and precedence to accomplish maintaining her grades which allowed her in the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. Summer loves spending time with her friends and family. She works hard and when time allows, she plays hard.

What is it like going to both college and high school at the same time?

Attending both high school and college has been challenging at times. I started dual enrollment my junior year of high school and I was loaded with college classes and my regular high school classes. I would drive to college in the mornings, drive to high school in the afternoons, and then go to work after. There has been some ups and downs and some breakdowns, especially with figuring out a schedule that works for me. Although it was very difficult in the beginning, it has been the best decision.

What do you love most about your high school and what will you miss most about it?
I love my CMA (certified medical assistant) class. It has been such a great experience and has presented so many opportunities. It is so much fun learning all the procedures and skills. For me, I do not think I will miss staying up all night cramming in a bunch of studying for a test the next day, but then again, I do think I will somewhat miss that part of high school. I will miss having friends around me every day. We go through all these years together, through every test, final, etc., they were always there. I will miss the entire high school period. The thing I will miss the most is the high school innocence where everyone just talked and played around and silly arguments over something as simple as a pencil.

What are you looking forward to most about being a full-time college student next year?
Since I started college early, I have finished almost all my prerequisite. By next year I will hopefully be attending the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. I am so excited to start this program. I have always wanted to be in the medical field and when I heard of this career, I knew that this is what I wanted. I am most excited about the clinicals that are in the program. I get to learn hands on about something that I am passionate about. That is something I look forward to the most.

What is Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and what does to be a member?
Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society is an international honor society for students. They provide opportunities and scholarships for their members. To become a member, you have to receive an invitation and have a 3.5 GPA or higher. Becoming a member of a college honors society while still in high school was a shock at first. To me, being a member means that all the challenges that I have had to overcome were worth it.

What is a favorite activity you do with your family?
One of my favorite activities to do with my family are the spontaneous beach trips. Our family hobby is hunting shark teeth at different beaches all of Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. I love to go scalloping on the Gulf and hiking in the mountains with my family. Anything we do we can always make it fun.

Why did you choose Amy Honea Photography as your senior photographer? What was your experience like before the actual shoot in preparations and what did you love most about it?
In my junior year of high school, I would always see Amy’s senior models and absolutely loved their photos. All these girls were just so stunning, and Amy always did so good with the photography. I knew as soon as senior year came that I was going to try to be one of the senior models. I am so thankful I did because not only does she take these amazing photos, but she has also boosted my confidence and with every photo, I have grown to love myself more and more. When I was younger, I competed in pageants, so all the preparations come naturally. It is always stressful and exciting at the same time right before the shoots, but she always makes us feel comfortable. I loved getting together with other girls my age and meeting new people.

Tell us about your thoughts on Confidence and Self Esteem.
Due to social media and photoshop, there’s this unrealistic beauty standard for all these girls. I struggle with it myself. It’s a very common subject but in all honesty, I would love to let other teenage girls my age know that they’re not alone and that they are perfect. My whole life I have struggled with my weight and my self-image, even worse now because I am in that age group where everyone cares about how you look. I am still learning to love myself for who I am, but to help other girls love themselves even just the tiniest bit more would be amazing.

What do you think is the hardest part about being a teen girl in general and what advice do you have to other teens?
I think the hardest part about being a teenage girl is fitting in and finding yourself. There is so much pressure to be a certain way, dress a certain way, and look a certain way. My advice would be to remember that no one else is you. You are not meant to look like everyone else. Be your own person. Do things that make you happy and learn to love and respect yourself.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

There are so many things that can be considered inspiring. I have participated in many cancer awareness events. My mom works in oncology, and it is so heartbreaking that people have to go through that. I love being out there cheering them on and giving them something to look forward to. I absolutely love seeing the smiles on their faces and trying my best to let them know that they are not alone in this. Another thing I would say that is inspiring is that I try to be the person that anyone can go to when they need help. I try and make everyone I meet smile because so many people go through things, and you can be the reason someone makes it through the day by just a smile.

Tell us more about what you have done at cancer awareness events. What are these events and what are your roles and responsibilities?
At the cancer awareness events, they were all about letting those with cancer know that they are not and never will be fighting alone. I have participated in Relay for Life and Breast Cancer Walk, which occurs every year. At these events we would make cotton candy, hand out food, cheer on survivorship and those who have fought and are still fighting. These events are super impactful because it opens your eyes to appreciate and not take for granted the life God has given us.

What leadership roles have you been able to take on as a result?
I planned and organized the Inspiring Teens community service project for the 2021 Breast Cancer drive.

What have you learned from working in such a large capacity?
After planning our community service project, I have learned that takes a lot of patience for everyone to be on the same page.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
My future. I could go on and on about the plans and the goals I have for myself. I was always taught to dream big and have goals for myself. I know that God has a plan for me but why not have these huge dreams and try to achieve them? I choose my future because there are so many setbacks, failures, but also success in some ways. In my head, my plans and goals seem perfect and easy, but, I know that it won’t be a smooth ride. It is just inspiring to me to hear other talk about their future and all the dreams they have for themselves. It lets people know that there is no practical timeline in life and that it’s okay to have setbacks and to fail sometimes. We have all been there or experiencing it now.

Tell us about your dance career. How/when did you get started and what types of dance do you study?
I started dancing when I was four and my career took a slight pause when I was mentally abused by a dance coach at the age of 13. However, I didn’t want this to get the best of me, and I knew that I still had some passion for dance inside of me, so I went back to dance and it was the best decision of my life. I find all of my happiness in dancing and am so blessed to have dance as an escape. I study many different styles of dance: pointe, ballet, tap, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, pom, jazz, and musical theater. Personally, my favorite styles of dance are ballet and lyrical because I love to dance gracefully.

Tell us more about your dance studio and why you love it so much.
I love Konquer Dance Company more than words can explain. After pushing dance away for three years, I was very anxious to go back to dance and had such a strong resentment towards it for a long time. When I first came to Konquer, my whole perception of dance changed. Konquer has given me so many opportunities to help me associate dance with something positive again. The instructors are nothing short of amazing and my studio is a place where I feel so motivated to become a better dancer and version of myself.

What is the hardest thing about teaching tap, and what is the easiest?
I love teaching tap! I would say the hardest thing about teaching tap isn’t the fact I have a student who has special needs. The hardest thing about it is seeing the physical limitations my student goes through and just knowing if those hindrances weren’t there, my student would have a much easier time tapping. However, this is such a rewarding experience for me, watching my student grow each week. The easiest thing about teaching tap is that my student wants to be better at tap. She comes in every week after practicing the dances I teach her for hours and has such an amazing work ethic and even drive to get better; I see improvements in her skills every week and couldn’t be a more proud teacher.

What is your favorite type of dance and why?
While I love all styles of dance, my favorite type of dance would have to be ballet and lyrical because I love the elegance and gracefulness that comes with these styles. I feel such confidence while dancing these two styles and love the feeling of performing in these two styles.

What is a favorite dance competition and why?
My favorite dance competition would have to be Starbound Dance Competition because that was my last competition before taking a temporary pause from dance due to a mentally abusive coach. Not knowing what my future looked like with dance, I wanted to dance my very best, not for anybody else, but for myself. In doing this, my last national competition before my break ended with a national championship for my solo and I
couldn’t have been happier. At the same time, my sister also received a national championship for her solo in a different age group. It was amazing to share this experience with her!

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
Dance has blessed me with so many things. My favorite accomplishment from dance is becoming a two-time national champion with my solos. I have such a strong work ethic, and truly witnessing all of my hard work paying off made me so happy but winning two national championships for my solos was truly an indescribable, phenomenal experience.

What is Mu Alpha Theta and what are your roles and responsibilities as a member?
Mu Alpha Theta is a math honors society (similar to NHS, but for math). As a member, I have to complete 45 hours of community service in two years and maintain at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA to be a part of the club. Members must have completed the equivalent of two years of college preparatory mathematics. Since I have joined, I have donated my time by making Christmas baskets for homeless kids and have attended several meetings to be a part of making my community a community which gives back.

What things do you do in Spanish honors NSHS?
NSHS is like NHS, but for Spanish. When I grow up, my main goal is to become a high school Spanish teacher. For NSHS, all students need to obtain at least a 3.75 GPA and receive an A or better in Spanish class. Throughout this club, our main goal is to make Spanish more prevalent throughout our school and doing community service hours to give back to our community. With a heavy decline in Spanish, members are supposed to encourage other students to take Spanish for the educational and fun benefits it has!

How do you balance being a 4.4 student and all your other activities?
Being a 4.4/4.0 student with all my other activities is no piece of cake. For me, school will always come first and all of the activities I do are considered privileges. I strive to get all A’s. I manage to do so, but it is a ton of work. Since I am so busy with many different activities, I try to get as much schoolwork done on the weekends to fit my activities in during the week. I have also learned to manage time properly. As soon as I get home from school, I will do my work until I have an activity, then I will finish it after. Even though this is possible, it takes a lot of drive and motivation to do so.

What else would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about how the support of my family has made me who I am today. My father and mother work very hard to financially support my dream through dance classes, company and competition fees, dance clinics, dance conventions, and
travel to those events. At least one if not both of my parents always attend my dance performances. I have a younger sister who also dances, and we motivate each other to be the best versions of ourselves. I also have an Autistic brother who I have encouraged to take dance classes, and he loves it! He attends boys hip hop and tap at Konquer Dance.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to donate my time. I have far exceeded my service hours for school and a big part of that is helping on my brother's special needs baseball team. It really is a family effort. My father coaches, my sister also helps, and my mom cheers everyone on. I am so proud of all the players. It is so rewarding to see the smiles on their faces during a game. And they inspire me! They show up and try their best!

What has this experience taught you?
This experience of helping at my brother's special needs baseball games means the world to me. While many people take things for granted, it is not a guarantee to play sports, it is a privilege that some are denied. No matter how hard it gets, there is always something to be grateful for in everything. To watch these players come out and not let their limitations stop them, is awe inspiring.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
My topic I would present to my peers is to do what you love. Go for it! Don't let others stop you in achieving your goals. Surround yourself with uplifting people/coaches/teachers and always give yourself positive self-talk. If you want it, you will find a way to achieve it! I have had people in my life I let interfere with my love for dance. I quit dance for 3 years. But I overcame my obstacles and came back stronger.

Picture
Nomination & Photography by Kailey Kopel Photography / Konquer Dance Company
What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished is maintaining straight A’s this year as a junior while being on a competitive dance company and on my high school’s varsity competitive poms team. I achieved this with time management, working ahead when I could on assignments, and sacrificing ample sleep some days to fit everything in. There’s only 24 hours in a day!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to never give up, even if someone tells you that you are not good enough. Hard work pays off with whatever your goals are.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I will be graduating college. The goal is to be a high school Spanish teacher and that high school’s poms/orchesis coach.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
When I am not at school, poms practice, or dance, I just enjoy chilling with friends and family. This doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I cherish it.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? I love to sing. I had a voice coach for years. I was in musicals/plays in junior high and high school. Unfortunately, with my schedule, I had to choose dance or theater when I started high school. So, dance was the path I chose.

3 Things on your bucket list
Be on a college dance team
Be fluent in Spanish
Become a 3-time national champion for my solo

Who do you find inspiring?
My dance teacher and poms coach I find inspiring. These two individuals motivate and teach in a way that makes me want to be my best version of myself.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring because I am a well-balanced person. I get good grades, I am involved in activities, and still make time to have fun with friends and family.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I attend Parkview Christian Church and love it! I have been going to the junior high and high school ministries for years. I have attended retreats through my church. I was asked to sing on their worship team, but I just couldn’t swing it with dance. That was disappointing for me because I really wanted to be more involved at church.

What should we know about you?
For me it would be the lessons that I have learned throughout my years of life, especially throughout my high school career. I love helping people in any way I can, and I would love for kids my age learn some of the lessons to that have overall made my life better and happier.

What are some of these lessons you've learned?
I think the biggest lesson I have learned is just to be yourself. It doesn’t matter what the world wants you to be or who they want you to be. You need to be who you want to be and do everything that you want to do. Put yourself first and most importantly be you.

What will you miss most about your high school?
I think the thing I will miss most is the atmosphere. I’ve been at my school my entire life and been around some of the same people the entire time I have been there. I have created relationships and many memories throughout my journey there. Some that I would never trade for the world.

What is something your high school is known for that you are/were a part of?
My high school is known for their annual food drive. This is an event where we collect thousands of dollars of food to give to local food banks around town.

In what ways do you help people specifically?
I make myself available. If someone needs me, I try and take some time out of my day to listen to or do whatever that person may need me to do. At the end of the day, I just try and be there.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I have been cheerleader for eight years and I have gone to UCA cheer national for five conservative years. I have also been involved in many other things. These include the Junior National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Girl’s Ministry, and the mission team. I have accomplished many things doing all of this, but not only that I have juggled all these responsibilities while having a job and helping take care of my siblings.

When did you get started in cheer and what is your favorite thing about it?
I started cheering when I was in the 5th grade. I would have to say my favorite thing about it is supporting my athletic teams and making games fun.

Tell us about your teammates and what makes your team special.
I would have to say what makes my team special is that at then end of the day we are family. We take care of one another and make sure we are always there when someone needs us. Everything we do is for one another because in cheer you are only as strong as your weakest link.

What was it like going to nationals 5 years in a row and which one was the most memorable? Why?
Going to nationals five years in a row makes you feel very accomplished. So far I would have to say my favorite memory is watching the progression of the team, and seeing everything we can accomplish with some hard work and dedication.

Picture

Why did you choose Casey Gower as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose Casey not only for his talent but because of his dedication and love for what he does. My experiences with Casey were beyond my expectations. He is honestly more than epic. I couldn’t pick just one thing I love the most about my experiences with him, but I will day if you ever have the chance to work with Casey you will not be disappointed. He will go above and beyond to make sure that your expectations are met. He will even go beyond those expectations to make sure that you’re not only satisfied but happy.

Tell us more about the things you do in Beta Club.
Everything we do in Beta Club is to help the community. We will collect certain items for people in need or write encouraging notes to all the health care workers and first responders.

What is Girl's Ministry and what are your roles and responsibilities as a member?
Girl’s Ministry is basically all the girls in the high school building in one big group. Me being on the Girl’s Ministry team my job is to make sure that not only is everyone welcome but is having fun. Many other girls on the team and myself make plans for devotionals and fun activities that us as one big group of girls can all participate in together to bring us closer to each other, and closer to God.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from being on the mission team?
My favorite memory would have to be going to an orphanage in Mexico and playing with all those kids. You never realize what an impact running around playing tag with a few little boys can have. You walk away with a different perspective on life and with a bigger appreciation for what you have.

Picture

What is your favorite thing to do with your siblings?

I would say my favorite thing to do with them I just spend as much time as I can with them as possible. Some of my favorite moments with them have just been the car rides down to school or sitting and watching a movie together.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
For me it would be happiness. I could sit and talk for hours about the ways that I have obtained happiness in my life. I also love giving people advice based on my experiences to help them obtain the same happiness I have. Plus, it’s the one of the main reasons I chose the career I want to per-sue in the future.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to put in the work and not to let anyone or anything stand in their way. Go the distance and always remember that no dream is ever too big.

Dani Kroeger – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by Photography by Leslie ANN
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Dani is such a beautiful young lady, inside and out! She truly is an inspiring teen! She has 3 varsity letters in basketball, 2 varsity letters in softball (she did not have a sophomore season due to covid). She balances her athletic career with her academics, as she holds a 3.54 grade average. She is also on the Yearbook committee, Champions Together, Honors Diploma, Early College Program and Health Sciences Program. After high school, she has been accepted into the Nursing Program at Vincennes University. I couldn't be more proud to nominate such a driven young lady!

What should we know about you?
I am a senior at Lincoln High School. I am on the academic honors diploma and have earned many college credits. I am a part of the health sciences program, which will allow for me to become a CNA when I graduate. I plan to attend Vincennes University for Nursing. While in high school, I have lettered 3 years of varsity in basketball and 2 years in softball.

What do you love about your high school and what will you miss most about it?
What I love most about high school is all the sports opportunities I have and all the friends I have made through sports. I will most definitely miss my friends the most.

How would your friends describe you?
I would say my friends would describe me as very funny and outgoing, but also kind and loyal. At first, I am very shy around people I'm not comfortable with but as I get to know you, I become more outgoing. Some of my friends I've had since elementary school would tell you that I have been with them through everything.

What does the health sciences program entail from you?
The health sciences program is a program that allows you to be able to become a CNA once you graduate high school. This program is very study-based but worth it in the end. Every day we work on new skills that we will be able to do in the nursing homes. Later in the year we will go to the nursing homes and practice the skills we learn on the residents there. This program is very rewarding.

Tell us about your basketball career.
I started my basketball career when I was about 4 years old at the YMCA. I am currently a senior in high school and start varsity for my team. I’m the shooting guard and sometimes point guard. What I love most about basketball is the bonds you create with your teammates, there’s nothing like it. You spend 5-6 months out of the year with your team and you become inseparable.

What is a favorite memory with your basketball team?
I would say my favorite memory with my team would be when we won sectionals my freshman year. We worked so hard all year for that win, and it felt so good to pull it off and celebrate with my teammates.

Tell us about your softball team and what you love about it.
My softball team is athletes from 9th - 12th grade. Most of my teammates, I’ve played with on many different travel softball teams. We all know each other very well and get along. What I love most about my team is how well we work together and how we support each other.

What position do you play and what is your biggest accomplishment?
For my softball team I played catcher my freshman and majority of my junior year, but this year I will be playing most of my time as an outfielder. My biggest accomplishment would be winning all conference and all area my freshman year.

Why did you choose Photography by Leslie Ann as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Leslie Ann has photographed many of my family and friends over the years. She is unbelievably patient, creative, and driven to get the best shot every time. She gets to know her clients and captures who they truly are.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have helped to coach and develop future athletes for the last 6 years. I attend camps, practices, and games in hopes to encourage their love of the game.
Being involved in sports has helped me to become a confident, team worker, who works hard to achieve my goals on and off the court.

What leadership skills do you value the most that you've learned from this experience and what skill do you think is the most important?
I value communicating and patience the most from coaching the younger athletes. You have to be very patient with the younger kids as well as communicate things good enough to where they can understand what you’re saying. The most important skill is feedback. The younger athletes count on the older athletes and coaches to give them feedback and let them know what they are doing wrong/good.

What has been the hardest thing about coaching others and what did you do to get past it?
I think the hardest thing about coaching the younger athletes is watching them struggle with skills and being down on themselves. One thing I tell the athletes is to work on it on your time off and if you make a mistake, leave it in the past and stop worrying about it. Focus on the important things and move on.

What is the most rewarding part or memory of coaching others?
The most rewarding part about helping the younger athletes is watching them become more confident and mature players. I love helping the younger athletes overcome skills they have struggled with in the past.

What are your duties on the yearbook committee and why is this fun for you?
For the yearbook committee I made layouts for the school yearbook as well as took pictures and sold ads. This was fun for me because I liked designing the yearbook and getting to know all of the students at the high school.

What is Champions Together and what do you do in this organization?
Champion Together is a collaborative partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics that promotes servant leadership among student athletes while changing their lives as well as the lives of those with intellectual disabilities.
For this club we schedule events for the student athletes such as, a basketball game and the polar plunge.

Share with us the principles of Honors Diploma and what it means to you to be a part of this.
In the Honors Diploma, students must complete all of the Core 40 requirements, as well as an additional 2 math credits, 6-8 world language credits, 2 fine arts credits and have to earn a “C” or better in all courses. This diploma also requires you to earn a minimum of 6 college credits, upon graduation I expect to have completed 41 college credits. You must have a grade point average of a “B” or better. This diploma helps me stay focused in school and in the end will be very rewarding. I have been able to get a jump start on college and will be able to officially start college as a 2nd year college student. These early college courses have been key to my early acceptance to the Vincennes University Nursing Program.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would advocate to my peers the importance of education and building your future. I have been fortunate to have great mentors in my life that have worked with me to embrace my talents and to set goals for myself. At times others could see things in me that I had not yet recognized as a strength. I would challenge them all to find others with similar goals and to push each other towards achieving their goals. While in high school I have taken several college courses that will allow me to skip my freshman year of classes and jump into the school of nursing. I take great pride in this accomplishment and know that without my inner circle I would not be where I am today.

3 things on your bucket list?

- go to the Maldives
- go on a cruise

Madison has dyslexia and has been able to become her high school Drum Major, President of the Debate Team, and Varsity Swim Team Captain. What do you do as President of the Debate Team and what has been your favorite topic so far to debate?
As debate president it is my job to help people if they are confused about anything, from the case work, to research, to where to start about a topic it’s my job to let them know they can always ask me.
My favorite topic that I have debated so far was my freshmen year, it was about if candidates running for public office had a right to privacy or if the people had a right to know and which should be valued more. This one is my favorite because I went to semifinals with this topic, and it was one of my proudest moments.

Tell us more about your swim career. How long have you been swimming and what is your favorite part about being in the water?
My swim career has been a long one. I have been swimming for going on 8 years now. My favorite part about being in the water is the fact you are in your own world. Whenever I dive in and I’m under water it’s just me and my head. No one else, in that moment it’s just me and nothing else going on in my life matters.

What sort of failures did you have and what did you learn from them?
The best example I can give is spelling tests in elementary school. Being dyslexic, I have an extremely hard time with reading and writing, so I would always do bad on spelling test. I remember we would get to go out for dinner if I ever got above a 70. However, by failing these test over and over, my mom and I learned of ways that I can learn how to memorize the spellings and I ended elementary school never getting below an 80.

What is the hardest part of dealing with your failures and how did/do you get past them?
The hardest part for me is the initial reaction to them, the deep feeling that you aren’t good enough to accomplish whatever it is you were trying to accomplish. The best way to get past that feeling, for me, is to look at myself in the mirror and explain to myself that I did nothing wrong, but I just need to work harder, and I’ll do better the next time.

Tell us about being a Drum Major. What do your responsibilities include and what do you love about your drum line?
A drum major is a student that conducts the band during the marching show, in the stands for stand tunes, and during pep rally performances. I had to learn how to conduct these different songs, our marching show, and be a role model. Drum majors are top of the food chain, the prime example and being the person people look up to is a big responsibility I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Why did you choose Nikki Ann Photography as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I actually had a friend that modeled for her, and I want to do it as well. The experience I’ve had is great, Nikki is so supportive in any idea I have in the middle of the shoot, and she always makes me feel beautiful. I love the fact that she is full of positivity and spreads around like trees spread air.

Tell us more about your pageant experiences. What inspired you to get involved and what do you love most about them?
I’ve always been interested in pageants; I also did dance when I was little, so I love dressing up. I also loved seeing the things and opportunities titles holders got and were able to do, and how they were able to benefit their community. I also love how much of a positive influence they have on girls’ self-esteem.

What is a favorite memory from a pageant?
When I competed in the Miss San Antonio Texas Teen pageant last year, at one of the rehearsals they started playing music while we were waiting to start the lesson. We all started singing and dancing and having fun. One of my favorite memories ever!

What have you learned from being in pageants?
I have learned how to be myself. Pageants have helped me find my confidence that was hidden beneath a bundle of insecurity I didn’t even know I had!

What is something about being in a pageant that others may not realize?
It’s much more of a positive environment that people realize. When people think of pageants they think of toddlers and tiaras, but that cannot be more opposite from what it truly is. It is so much more than who is prettier, it’s about how beautiful you are on the inside more than anything.

Reagan Wright

Reagan Wright - Texas
Nomination & Photography by Forke's Photography
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Reagan is an amazing role model and an inspiring teen. She created a project called Riley's Angels, named after her brother who was born with severe autism. This organization provides children with disabilities, gifts during the holiday season. Bringing them joy and spreading holiday cheer. On top of managing this project, Reagan has worked hard to be in the Top 10% of her graduating class. Among her many extracurricular activities, she is also FFA President and President of the Bluebonnet Drama Club Juniorette Division. Reagan also finds time to volunteer in various events within the community.

What should we know about you?
I am passionate about giving back to my community and spreading kindness to everyone. I live life treating others how I wish to be treated. With Riley’s Angels I want to make children with disabilities feel included in all aspects of holiday spirit and activities because they are so limited to what their disabilities allow. Helping others in my community allows me to witness how my community is able to flourish and knowing I am a part of the progress and growth within a growing community.

Tell us more about Riley's Angels. When did you start it, what specific roles do you play, and how did you find others to help you?
Riley’s Angels is an organization I created in December of 2019. Riley’s Angels was inspired by my brother Riley. He is my thirteen years old brother who was diagnosed with severe autism at the age of three. Along with his autism, he is completely non-verbal and has severe anxiety. His uttermost joy and excitement during the holiday season inspired me to create a way to give to other children just like him. Due to their disabilities, it can be very overwhelming and stressful for these children to do the “normal” holiday school festivities such as school Christmas parties, programs, and meeting Santa. I wanted children with disabilities and those who find it hard to enjoy all aspects of celebrating the holidays to have an extra special sense of the holiday season. They are so limited to what they can do, due to overstimulation and other needs. My role in this project is gathering gifts designated to certain children and their needs. I gather toys and items each child likes that will help them with sensory issues and things that they enjoy the most. I had the joy of going to my local school’s special needs classes for two years so that Riley’s Angels and spread holiday cheer to the students there. I created social media posts and pages about the foundation where people in the community, friends, and families were generous enough to donate money to Riley’s Angels to help purchase gifts for the children. My mom and dad also helped me throughout this entire process of creating social media pages and wrapping their gifts and stuffing Christmas stockings. This would not have been possible with my friends, family, and members of my community.

What was the hardest thing about getting it started and how did you get around it?
One of the hardest things about getting Riley’s Angels started was getting it out and into the community. I created social media posts and pages about the foundation where people in the community, friends, and families were generous enough to donate money to Riley’s Angels to help purchase gifts for the children my first year. In 2020, I sadly could not do Riley’s Angels because of the Covid-19 Pandemic. I was lucky enough to do Riley’s Angels again in 2021 with help of my family and friends.

What leadership skills have you learned through this?
Riley’s Angels has taught me how to build relationships with other children with special needs and understanding their own individual disabilities and how they are all unique and perfect in their own way. Understanding different ways of communication skills with anyone and everyone by understanding how to interpret, interact and bond with children with different disabilities other than my brother's autism.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am involved in a tremendous amount of extra curricular activities. Not only do I help out my community in any way possible but throughout various activities such as being a Varsity Cheerleader and Cheer Captain, it has shaped me into the independent young lady and leader that I am today. Being president of many organizations as well as being a three time Kleberg Kenedy County Jr Livestock Show pageant winner I’ve had the opportunity to serve as a role model and leader to people within my community.

Share your cheer career with us. How did you get started, when, what teams have you been on, etc.
As a young Kindergartener sitting in the stands of my elementary school pep rallies, I knew I was meant to be a cheerleader. I remember watching the middle school cheerleaders in awe, and I knew that is what I was destined to be. I was eligible to try out for Ricardo Middle School Cheer when I was in the 6th grade. Weeks before tryouts I had torn my meniscus in dance class. Up until the tryout day I had no earthly idea that I had tore my meniscus. All that registered in my brain was that I was in excruciating pain. As I continued to jump and tumble on my knee without a brace for weeks, I didn’t realize the severity of my injury and was determined to push through. The day of tryouts rolled around and I was shocked that I could not walk, my knee was blown up like a balloon and swollen. Minutes before my tryout I remember wrapping my knee in compression tape, stepping out onto that gym floor and performing my heart out with jumps and sharp motions. I put everything I had into that tryout despite my injury. To my surprise, I made the cheerleading squad and started bawling out of pure joy. I was a cheerleader all throughout middle school. As I entered high school, I was extremely nervous to try out for the Varsity cheerleading squad. I was blessed to be named an Academy varsity cheerleader all four years of my high school career. It’s bittersweet realizing that the last bits of my high school cheerleading career is approaching. Throughout my years on varsity, a squad rule for tryouts was that only upcoming juniors and seniors were allowed to try out for captain. Earning the cheer captain position has been my dream since I was a little girl. Being named captain my junior year I was overjoyed and shocked. It is very rare for a junior to be named Captain. My senior year captain tryout was no different than the year before, however this time I worked twice as hard to hopefully regain my position as cheer captain. When the results were given stating that I had earned the position of cheer captain for the second time in a row I was completely shocked and beyond grateful being named the cheer captain for my senior year!

What does it mean to you to be a captain and what legacy do you hope to pass down to the younger girls?
As a cheer captain not only am I a leader to my cheer squad but I am a leader and role model to my school, school district, and my community as well. As of right now our school’s history I am the second cheerleader to be named varsity cheer captain both their junior and senior year. I hope to pass down to younger girls and boys the joys of cheerleading and how rewarding it is to support people in and out of our school building. I not only lead my squad by setting good examples, I want the younger students of Santa Gertrudis to look up to my squad and I as kind and respectful role models at school.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
My favorite memory from cheer was being named a 2021 All American cheerleader. I had the amazing opportunity of performing in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in a parade with cheerleaders from all across the country.

What organizations are your president of and what are your duties in each?
I am President of the Bluebonnet Drama Club of Kingsville which is a community service group that volunteers in various events around town. As president I preside over our monthly meetings according to accepted rules of parliamentary procedure and appoint committees. I am also President of the Academy Pride FFA Chapter. I preside over meetings, following parliamentary procedure, appointing committees. I coordinate the activities of the chapter and evaluate the progress of each division of the program of activities. I also represent my chapter in public relations and official functions.

What does it entail to be a three time Kenedy County Jr Livestock Show pageant winner?
As a three time KKJLS pageant winner who has had to go through the pageant preparation and process several times. Practicing potential interview and on stage questions, and perfecting the on stage walks. Every time I stepped up on that stage I did it with confidence, not only in my appearance but also in my voice and facial expressions. I went on stage to be present and enjoy the moment not to win a sparkly crown, sash, or buckle. As a three time KKJLS Queen I have got to see the people in my community grow right before my eyes, I have seen year after year the hard work people put into their livestock show projects. Being able to award people for all of their hard work is a feeling like no other. I am so grateful for the opportunities I was given serving my livestock show as their KKJLS Queen for several years.

What does it take to win even once?
In the KKJLS Queens Contest you have multiple aspects that go into determining a winner. Before the pageant begins there is a one on one five minute interview with the judges. When the curtain opens the pageant consists of two main walks. The first walk is done in your casual wear where you give an introduction on stage. The Second walk is done in your formal wear, where you are then asked an onstage question. A person’s confidence and stage presence also goes a tremendous way when competing in a pageant.

What duties do you have after you win?
When crowned KKJLS Queen, you will be at every event during our livestock show week with your sash and crown. From early mornings to late nights and even morning news segments, as queen you are able to represent the county show in a positive way within the community. At each and every event you are able to pass out ribbons, banners, and buckles to the exhibitors. As well as grand and reserve champion awards as you congratulate people in the community for all the hard work they have put into their livestock show projects within the past year.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

I am most passionate about acceptance, not only of yourself but of everyone around you. Teens are so judgmental towards one another for their actions and their looks that people don’t see the true person who is standing in front of them. Teens are quick to judge people for their differences for their looks, disability, or sexual orientation, no matter who you are people are always quick to judge. People need to be conscious of their actions and the words they speak during interactions with other people because you never know what can be affecting someone either positively or negatively.

Why did you choose Forke's Photography for your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Forke’s Photography offers a model representative program that I was interested in since my freshman year of high school. This amazing program allows his model representatives from all different schools in the county to come together and make lifelong friendships. All while having fun and exciting themed photo shoots all over south Texas. As well as being able to have themed individual shoots, with any props and any ideas that will make the shoot a spectacular one! I joined the Forke’s model representative program at the beginning of my Junior year. I always love how Roy is always focused on his work and will do anything for the perfect shot. The images he captures are only the perfection of each individual he shoots with. I chose Forke’s Photography for my senior photographer because each photoshoot I have had with Roy he always makes sure his model representatives are laughing and have a great time shooting and being comfortable in front of the camera. Making each photoshoot an enjoyable moment for everyone.

Why did you choose Photography by Alessa as your photographer?
I chose Photography by Alessa because I admired how her photos were all different and caught the personality of the person she was shooting. My experience was relaxed and fun. It didn’t feel like it was something I needed to do, it was more something I was doing for fun. What I loved most was how confident Alessa made me feel. She truly makes you feel like you are the most beautiful person in the world inside and out.

What lead you to being her photography assistant and what is your favorite part about the job?
I became her photography assistant because I want to learn more about photography not only as a hobby but also as a profession. My favorite part about working with her is when she shows her senior their pictures and their face lights up.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned from working with her?
The little things are the most interesting. There is so much importance in the time of day, what someone wears, a background, a reflection, or a shadow. The little things that people don’t notice; Alyssa has taught me to see.

Tell us about one of your favorite images you've taken with your camera.
Most of the images that I have taken in the past were still photos of nature. I’m excited to start snapping pictures of people to see what I can capture.

What type of photographer do you hope to be and what do you like photographing most?
I used to only really take pictures of nature, like flowers and sunsets, but becoming Alessa’s assistant has really created an interest in people for me. The more I explore photography, the more I learn about myself and how I see things through the lens.

What else should we know about you?
You should know that I am an all-American, hometown girl. I have a strong family foundation and am blessed to be surrounded by friends. My life is “typical” and I think so many teenagers can identify with me. I hope to inspire others by helping them see themselves for who they are as well as see the gift they are to others. I want people to feel valued and to know their worth.

What are some of your favorite things to do with your family?
I am fortunate to come from a family that has strong family values; we are very open with one another. We enjoy traveling together and trying out different restaurants. We are big baseball fans so when we can catch a game as a family it’s always a great day!

What will you miss most about high school?
I think I will miss the chapter of high school the most. That period in time where it seemed like we lived in our own little bubble. I know that friends and relationships will all change as we grow and spread out and that makes me a little sad.

What is one of your favorite memories with your friends?
I have an incredible network of friends, guys and girls, and some of the best memories are when we all hang out together. There is so much laughter and it feels like a family.

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have worked as a volunteer for Special Olympics for the past six years. It is an incredible experience, and I cannot explain the feeling of being with those special athletes and sharing in their accomplishments and successes!

How did you get involved in volunteering for the Special Olympics and what specifically do you do when you volunteer?
I was in seventh grade and my English teacher asked me to get involved. She has a son who has special needs, so she was involved too. When I volunteer, we go bowling and I help a group of students compete against each other in bowling.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I am passionate about equality. I feel as though people should be treated equally regardless of age, race, sexual preference, religion, and gender identification.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
This is a tough question and I can’t think of one specific example. But, I will say, navigating friendships and school and life as a teenager is difficult. I did it with the support and encouragement of my family and friends. It is so important to have people in your life to cheer you on and love you for who you are.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Just like I said above, you need to find “your people” and you need to believe in yourself. Very little is easy in life which means you have to set your mind to something, stay focused, and allow others to help you reach your goals.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself fresh out of college looking for a teaching job. I want to be a social studies or language arts elementary teacher. I also plan to travel the world and embrace every experience I can along the way.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
The beach is my happy place. A book, some sunglasses, headphones, and a beach towel are all I need!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I’m a pretty good sketch artist. I won’t be illustrating anything anytime soon but drawing is a secret talent of mine!

3 Things on your bucket list:
- go to Greece
- go to Paris
- go to Italy

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom is an incredible inspiration to me.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
It’s tough for me to say that other people find me inspiring, but if they did it would more than likely be because of my outgoing personality and loyalty to others.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am so grateful for this experience. I hope that other teens see their strengths and find the courage to live their true journey.

Kylie Hill - Kentucky
Nomination & Photography by Scott Powell Photography
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kylie Hill is not only a fantastic model to photograph but also a fantastic young lady. I have had the privilege to be her teacher this year and she is a trustworthy student that handles responsibilities perfectly. Kylie is planning to become a nurse and with her personality and desire to help others, she will be a huge asset to medical field.

What should we definitely know about you?
I have future plans to become a nurse.
I am a hard working person that is loyal to my friends, family and things that are important to me. I am very reliable and dependable. Helping others is very important to me. I am caring and kind to everyone around me and treat them as I want to be treated in return.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some basic information about me, I am in NHS, DECA, BETA and HOSA clubs. I have cheered for 10 years continuous. I am CPR certified and I want to become a pediatric nurse. But as for inspiring things I would to think that my attitude about life on a daily basis is inspiring. I try to help others in any way I can. I am generous to a fault with my time, efforts, and anything else I can bring to the table.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present the topic of the importance of healthcare workers and the growing need for them. In the medical field today healthcare workers are faced with issues and problems that they have never faced with in the past. I wanted to become a healthcare worker before the pandemic because I like helping people but now with the issues and shortage of workers, I want to become a nurse more than ever. I have already taken emergency procedures; I am taking phlebotomy and patient care certification courses.

Barham White - Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by Sprig Designs
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Barham is a leader on and off the field. He has helped his team win two baseball state championships and one football state championship. Barham is also very active in his church youth group. Barham is dependable and works hard in everything he does. He will be continuing his baseball career next year by playing baseball for Louisiana State University - Eunice.

When did you start playing baseball? What position do you play now? And what do you love most about playing baseball?
I have been playing baseball as long as I can remember. I play catcher, and my favorite part about playing baseball is the competition. I love to compete against others, and I think baseball is a great game to find out how much someone wants to win.

Tell us about your two baseball state championships. Walk us through each of the seasons and what it felt not once, but twice!
God has blessed me immeasurably by allowing me to compete for two championships, but my greatest memories were of the guys in the dugout from those years. I’ve shared teams with some characters who kept the guys entertained all spring long. The laughs and the moments of pure joy in winning big games will be what I remember the most. But holding that trophy up in Sulphur for the last game of the year will hold a special place in my heart forever because it is the ultimate reward for all the hard work and late nights.

What will you miss most about your team, coach, and baseball life?
Looking back on my career as a senior with one more season left, I think I’ll miss the everyday presence of these guys in my life. When you lift weight, hit in the cages, and work defensively with the same guys every day for a couple years, you form bonds with them. I’ll miss playing with guys I grew up with,

Why are you most excited to start playing next year for LSU - Eunice?
I’ve dreamed of playing college baseball since I was 12-13 years old, and when I finally get to take the field at LSUE I think it’ll be confirmation that all the hard work and sacrifices were worth it.

Picture
Photography by Sprig Designs

What has your football career been like? What position do you play? What has your biggest personal achievement been on the field?
My football career has done the most to shape my character as a young man. Our class has experienced it’s fair share of adversity through the years with us falling short in the final game of the year twice, but I think it’s helped me understand the winning is not always everything.  I always play to win, but I’ve been in the Superdome of New Orleans holding a state championship trophy and I remember the summer camps and dinners shared with my friends during the season even more than the win.

What do you think that people who don't play football realize about the sport?
The physicality of high-level competitive football is something that cannot be explained. Football is a contact sport, and it’s entirely different on the field versus on tv.

How big is football in your area and what did it mean to win the state championship for your school?
Friday nights are magical in Small Town, USA, and to have all your friends and family pack the stadium to cheer you on is incredible.

What is your football team like? What do you love most about being in their group?
I love the way the guys are like family. It takes a few summer camps and a few days spent being miserable together at summer practices, but when it’s time to play on Fridays everyone knows the guy next to them is giving 100 percent.

What else should we know about you?

I want all people to know I am a follower of Christ and that the joy I found in His grace is available to them as well. The love of Jesus changed my life, and without Him I am nothing. God has blessed me immeasurably so far, and I'll always give 100% effort on the field and in the classroom because of the gifts I have been blessed with.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Young people today have the chance to change the world. Our generation has been given every tool to succeed and change the world for the better, and now all we have to do is take action. All great things are worth the work that they require, so it's time for us as a generation to get to work. By serving in our communities, bringing about change in the way we treat each other, and loving each other the way Christ loved us, we can change the world.

What lead you to choosing Sprig Designs for your senior portraits? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Brad Sanson has gone the extra mile in shooting my athletic events at OCS since I was a freshman and everyone at my school knows he’s the best. He’s willing to do whatever he needs to get the lighting or background just right for your pictures. There are not enough positive things I can say about Brad Sanson and Sprig Designs; Mr. Brad is extremely talented with a camera.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard at what you love, and you can accomplish anything. Don’t listen to people who discourage you, stay determined.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I’ll go where God takes me. I have no decided plans for after college but whatever I decide to do I know I will succeed.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I like to spend time outdoors with my family.

3 Things on your bucket list
Sky diving, visit Europe, and see the Midwest.

Who do you find inspiring?
My dad, Brent, is my hero and always will be but there are also other men in my life that have impacted me immeasurably. My uncle, Blake Shelby, my football coach, Drew Vidrine, and my teacher, Bill Angelly, are a few that I can never repay for the impact they’ve had on my life.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Jesus is King!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my writing and how I express myself through it. Questions such as why I write, what I view my purpose to be, and why I put myself and my thoughts out there at such a young age.

Is writing a career choice for you and if so, what are your plans?
Writing is a career choice for me and I plan to get my Bachelor’s degree in English and later get my Master’s degree. I’m not sure where my writing will take me and if I will continue journalistically or with my Christian blog, but I do know that wherever life takes me, I will still be writing.

How did you get started in writing and what is your favorite thing to write about?
I’ve been writing stories since I could write. However, I feel like my writing really took off or became my passion in the 8th grade. My English teacher was the first person to really take my writing seriously and I never looked back. I love writing historical fiction or fiction for fun and helpful personal growth blogs or articles to encourage others.

What are your duties as the copy editor for the college newspaper and how did you get the job?
I interviewed for the copy editor position through a normal interview and a skills interview where I had to copy edit an article in order for my boss to approve my work. My job is to read over everyone’s articles and use the AP style guide to edit for grammar, word choice, and other editing errors that come about.

What is your favorite piece you've written? Tell us about it.
I don’t really have a favorite piece because I believe every writing I have written is too different to compare it to another. However, I would say one of my favorite poems that I have recently written is called “Paperless Poems.” It’s a poem about how poems or writings are timeless and can never be forgotten. If the poems are so-called paperless, then they are “written in stone” and stone “remain(s) forever in time.”

Tell us about some of your adventures.
I went to six of the seven continents by age 13 and I climbed Mount Kosciuszko at age 10 (the highest peak in Australia). This was because my dad climbed the seven summits including Mount Everest and my family got to tag along on some of his adventures.

List each continent you traveled to and what surprised you most about it.
I’ve been to South America, Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe, and I live in North America. The only continent I haven’t been to is Antarctica. I got to serve in South America and Africa, giving out supplies and teaching the people alongside a group. I was most surprised at how joyful the locals were despite their circumstances. That has influenced me to bring joy into any situation, because if people who don’t have necessities such as food and water can be happy, then I can find joy in my circumstances as well.

What continent have you not been to and when do you plan on going there?
I haven’t been to Antarctica and I don’t have any immediate plans to. My dad climbed Antarctica's highest peak and said it was like visiting another planet so it would be amazing to experience if I ever have the opportunity.

What was the hardest thing about your climb on Mount Kosciuszko and what was the easiest?
The hardest part was the wind because I was a young child in a big puffy coat and my parents had to hold onto my brother and me because we kept getting knocked down by the wind. The easiest part was the climb itself. Although Mount Kosciuszko is the highest peak in Australia, it’s still practically an upward 5-mile walk compared to other mountains in Washington state.

What is a favorite memory from your travels?
My favorite memory was in Europe. I was in a grocery store in London and a sweet old lady came up to me and offered to buy me a bread item I was looking at. I kindly refused the offer but the act of kindness I witnessed in another country took me by surprise.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I snowboard, play soccer, participate in the swim team, and mountaineer with my dad and brother. I have visited orphanages and gone on mission trips which has given me a wide knowledge of diversity. I specifically went to Swaziland when I was 11 and experienced first hand how lucky I am to have the simplest necessities such as food and water. That trip, a dying boy, and a group of the happiest girls changed me forever.

What do you love most about the sports you do?
For soccer and mountaineering I love being able to do them with my dad. The time we get to spend together when he coaches my soccer team or leads my brother and myself up a mountain makes the hard work worth it. As for snowboarding and swimming, they are like flying to me. I can fly through the water or fly down a mountain on my snowboard and I can just focus on the feeling of absolute freedom.
Picture
Photography by Brian Dickinson - Mount Kosciuszko
Tell us about your mission trips. How did you get involved, what do you do there, and where do you plan on going next?
I was able to go on mission trips through my Church. I went to Yakima, Washington in middle school and helped sort through food. I went to Swaziland, Africa and helped out at a Church there. I taught some of the children different games we play in America and I made some wonderful friends despite the language barrier. I also went to Argentina, South America and gave toys to the children in an orphanage. I don’t know where I will go next but I hope to someday return to Swaziland.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Faith is one of the biggest parts of my life. I am a Christian so I would probably want to share Christ. However, I would take a simpler approach and talk about love. I want to share the love God has given me and explain to others that they can find love, joy, peace and contentment right where they are. That comes from learning to love yourself and also recognizing what your potential is. One of the saddest things to me is watching people hate themselves and waste their potential to improve the world in the way they were intended.

What do you feel is your best leadership skill you've mastered in helping lead the youth ministry?
I’ve gained more confidence. I used to always ask my youth pastor, “why don’t I have God-like confidence?” The problem for me was finding the middle ground where I wasn’t prideful, but I was confident in who God created me to be. Leadership has unlocked that quality because when you lead others, it’s important to root yourself and know who you are first. Once I was able to find confidence in who God created me to be, I was able to lead others to do the same.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is overcoming my epilepsy diagnosis and the setbacks that came with it. At first, it was really hard to overcome it. I was angry and didn’t understand why it had to be my battle. But then I recognized it as a blessing. It opened the door to conversations and provided me with more empathy. I was able to turn a hard thing into something beneficial and I was able to write about it so that I could make an awareness of it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Take every opportunity you can. If you want to get somewhere, you have to be willing to put in the work and know that failure will come before success.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think the reason I could be considered inspiring is because I don’t give up. A lot of difficult things have happened in my life, but they have sculpted me into becoming perseverent. I don’t know how much time I have on this Earth so I have a drive to do what I can right now. I got the drive after being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and epilepsy. I don’t know what else will happen, but I’m not going to waste any more time being afraid of failure because I have a drive to live and a purpose to fulfill.

Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Brandy Davis is inspiring to not only me but our community through her participation in various clubs and organizations at Keller High School. Brandy has a huge heart and is always willing to help others. She is an officer in Operation Beautiful and in Circle of Friends. Both clubs strive for inclusivity and positive behavior. Photography by Valerie Jirik Photography
Why did you choose Valerie Jirik as your photographer?
I chose Valerie Jirik as my photographer because of her kind spirit and amazing talents. My experience has been nothing but great. I love how Valerie has pushed me out of my comfort zone with beautiful photoshoots but still has encompassed my personal style in each shoot.

What else should we know about you?
I think it is important to know how independent I am as a person. I enjoy leadership opportunities and strive to make the world around me a better place. Through my ambition, I volunteer for the community and participate in many clubs and organizations within my community.

What has been your favorite leadership experience?
By far my favorite leadership experience was my time spent at Camp Carter. During a two-week session this past summer I was able to work with the youth in my community to provide the children a safe place where they can openly be themselves. Through this experience, I served as a Counselor in Training. With this specific role I was tasked with the responsibility of not only aiding the children and helping other staff within their duties but specifically making camp enjoyable to the younger generation of campers.

What did you learn from this experience?
Within my two weeks spent in a counselor-like position, I saw many kids come in with troubling home lives and just hope for the ability to find peace and happiness away from the normal world. This experience has taught me the importance of showing love towards others as one simple act of kindness can uplift another from any endeavors they face.

What do you think is your best leadership quality?
I think my best leadership quality is my willingness to assume responsibility in any situation. By holding myself up to a high standard every day, I can confidently say that I always put my best foot forward and accomplish every task to the best of my ability.

Tell us about Operation Beautiful and what your role as an officer is.
Within Operation Beautiful I serve as an Officer alongside other inspiring women at my school. My role within the organization is to help encourage positivity as well as manage the membership of others. Through this, the organization is able to host events throughout the school year celebrating character, kindness, respect, and inclusivity at my school.

What is Circle of Friends and what do you love about your time there?
Circle of Friends is a club at my school where students cultivate friendships with their special needs peers and make an impact in my community through volunteer work. By attending our monthly events students are able to act on the motto of “make a difference and make a friend.” There is nothing not to love about this club. I love spending my time there and seeing the happiness it brings to all.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my teacher Mrs. Mullin inspiring through her abundance of creativity and wittiness. I cannot applaud this woman enough as she constantly raises the bar and reminds me of what is most important to me; this being to show the world kindness and compassion towards others.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think it is inspiring, taking account of the adversities I have faced within my family during Covid-19, that I have not allowed the pandemic to phase my spirits. After struggling with the pandemic I had a loss in my family and was forced to move from my childhood home. Both of these factors, though grievous, pushed me to keep growing. I am so thankful for those who supported me through this and the person I am today because of it.

Through all these negatives in Covid-19, what was something positive that happened for you during this time?
Although Covid-19 proved trying, I was able to spend more time with my family building our relationships. I also focused on my personal growth and became more content with my life as well as pushed myself more than precedent to achieve success.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Although I am still growing as time goes on I would suggest to anyone of any age to find the good in even the worst of days. Looking for such things allows for light in even the darkest of times.

Swim in Every Ocean

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I believe change comes through knowledge and education, so if I was asked to present a topic that I am passionate about I would speak about my passion for the environment. This topic is important to me to speak about considering its weight on our planet. The environmental crisis that our world is facing often goes unnoticed and I believe we can change that through activism and spreading awareness.

Tell us more about the Environmental Club and your plans for it moving forward.
The Environmental Club is an organization that works to educate students on environmentally focused topics through meetings and volunteer work. As a club, we host school clean-ups monthly, annually plant a pollinator garden, have documentary viewing days on varying topics, among other events. With my position as president of the club, I plan to continue advocating for our planet and striving to make the world a better, healthier place.

Zachary Rice - California
Nomination by Ellen McCarthy

Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Zachary Alexander Rice is a teen actor, gamer and influencer. He uses his extensive fanbase to bring attention to issues close to his heart. One such passion is inspiring underprivileged kids to reach their goals. Zach donates his time teaching, mentoring, and volunteering as a motivational speaker. "I encourage kids to DREAM BIG and believe in themselves. They can be anything they want to be."

Tell us more about your work with underprivileged kids. How did you get involved in this and why is it so close to your heart?
Ever since I was little, my mom encouraged me to volunteer my time helping others.  Just about every weekend our whole family spent time with various charities around Los Angeles. She made it fun. It was like a big adventure. One time we would be folding and packing Jeans for underprivileged teens with "Teens for Jeans" with Kristen Bell and the next week we would be downtown Los Angeles sweeping the sidewalks on Skid Row. I learned that it is our responsibility to help others less fortunate and to make this world a better place. As time went on, and I became a teenager, I saw how spending my time encouraging and working with underprivileged kids seemed to make a big difference in their lives.

What is the hardest part about this leadership role, and what is the most rewarding?
The hardest part of leadership is balancing authority with the children. You want to be everyone's friend, but sometimes you have to be the "teacher" and be a little tough when they are wanting to quit and give up. That is a hard balance. I want to be encouraging and I want them to feel empowered. I teach them to go for what they want in life and not to be afraid of failure. So, when I see the kids become confident and assertive, that is more rewarding than words can express!

How has being an actor, gamer, and influencer enabled you to get the message out in a big way?
I am so lucky to be able to do the things that I love to do. I believe that being an actor, gamer, and influencer has responsibilities. I want to be a good role model to the kids that look up to me and follow me on social media. I always try my best to be positive, clean cut and kind. Hundreds of my followers reach out to me with sad stories of bullying and feelings of worthlessness and I use those opportunities to encourage them and inspire them.

Tell us more about your acting career. How did you get started and what where are you now with it?
Acting has always been what I wanted to do. At three years old I told my mom. "Acting is what God sent me down here to do." I really believed that. I have been super lucky to have parents that encouraged me to do anything that I dreamed of doing. I guess that is why it is so important to me to do the same thing for the kids that I mentor who face challenges.

What is one of your biggest accomplishments with acting?
I think my biggest accomplishment in acting is the project that I am working on currently. It is called The Supernatural University. (based on a real online University) It is a "Transmedia Universe" which means that it has Movies, TV shows, Video Games, and a Metaverse! I will be starring in all of it, and I am so excited. The first feature film (of 3) will begin filming soon! It is called Lycan, and I just can't wait!

Being a gamer, how much time do you spend on this craft? What are your favorite games to play?
I have always loved video games. I spend about 2 hours every day in the evening playing with my friends. It is funny, when Covid happened, I was spending a lot of time at home and my parents said to do something positive with my time. I figured that since acting was shut down and I loved video games, that I would start making TikToks about Minecraft. (My favorite game). I never thought that it would turn into an actual partnership with TikTok and 50 million likes.  I still can't believe it.

Picture
Photography by Liquid Studios Entertainment - Official Headshot for The Supernatural University

How did you get involved in being an influencer? What positive messages do you put across to your followers?
I have always loved social media. I enjoy the fact that you can connect with people who like the same things - It makes the world seem smaller even though I am connecting with people from all around the world! As for my posts, I always try to make my followers laugh by being the goofy guy. Honestly, that is who I am. I want them to know that you don't always need to be "cool" or to pretend to be someone that you are not- They can be who they really are and that is what is important.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Other inspiring things are that I spend my time writing back to kids that reach out to me on social media when they are going through a hard time. I try to be that "safe place" and "older brother" that listens and encourages them. Sometimes it is just a friendly reminder that they are special and that they "count".

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I could talk forever about not being fearful and "chasing your passion". I feel that so many of my peers are afraid to put themselves out there because they are worried about being judged by others. Social media can be intimidating and make someone feel vulnerable. I think we need to stand up as individuals and be proud of who we are...and go for our dreams. Whatever they may be.

Picture

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to focus on your goals and never give up- Everyday move forward and do something to move yourself ahead--even if the steps are small ones--because every little bit adds up and brings you that much closer to your dreams coming true.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I would like to have my own Film Production Company. My company would train underprivileged teens to work in the entertainment industry and eventually at my company. I could give everyone with a passion for film an opportunity no matter what their background.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity is flying airplanes. I have a passion for aviation, and I am currently working on my pilot's license.

Where can people find you?
(https://www.tiktok.com/@zachricetv?) and (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3420473/)

Nomination by Christina Landry
Photography by JD Spencer Photography
Issue 52 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Trysten Tallada remains on honor roll while being a Morgan City High School Fancy Dancer, as well as, an active member of Morgan City High School Ambassadors and Student Council. What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I feel the thing I am most comfortable speaking about is dance. This is my 11th year in studio dance and my 6th year on the school dance team.

How did you get started in dance and what do you love most about it now?
I was a very energetic child that felt the need to dance to any and all music. It didn’t matter if I was at home, in a store or elsewhere in public, if there was any music, I was dancing. My mom figured she would put me in dance classes to help burn off the energy and teach me a few moves. Here I am 11 years later and still dancing.

What dances do you study and which is your favorite? Why?
In studio dance, I have taken tap, jazz, ballet and hip-hop. As far as the school dance team, it is pom, kick, hip-hop and jazz. My favorite style of dance is hip-hop. I love the face pace of the moves and feel like it fits me better. Anyone that watches me dance regularly always says how I put so much emotion into hip-hop and how great it looks.

What was a favorite dance competition? Walk us through your day and why is it your favorite?
My school dance team has competed in local, state and national competition. Unfortunately, due to me breaking my pelvis while dancing, I was unable to dance at nationals in Disney World but I was able to attend and support them. We qualified for nationals this year but due to covid, we didn’t get the school board’s approval. For state competition, we travel and get a motel room the night prior to competition so we can practice. The day of competition, we go to the venue, fix our hair/makeup and wait for our turn to stretch and prepare to compete.

Picture

What is a Fancy Dancer and what does it entail?
A Fancy Dancer is a member of the Morgan City High School Dance Team. Those interested must try-out as well as have good grades and be an overall good student. Try-outs are on multiple days where we must learn multiple dances and preform them for a score. Last year I was a Lieutenant and this year I am Co-Captain of the team. I am proud to be a MCHS Fancy Dancer where we perform at competitions, pep rallies, football and basketball games.

What do you think non-dancers don't realize about dancer life?
I don’t think people realize how much we have to practice. As a Fancy Dancer, we don’t just practice the last hour of our school day. We practice after school and even during holidays. If we don’t show up for practice, we have stiff consequences. For studio dance, we practice twice a week until the week prior to recital where we practice about 5 hours a night. No one really sees the bruises or pain we have to go through to get dances good enough to perform.

Tell us more about your experiences as a junior member of the local volunteer fire department. What got you interested in that and what is your role there?
I grew up with my mom in the volunteer fire department and I always found it interesting. This is my third year as a junior member where I can participate in various drills to prepare me for when I turn 18 and officially be a member. For now, I can assist on fire calls by assisting with changing air packs, giving water, and racking hoses. Once I am 18, I will be able to be more hands on and can actually train to fight fire and perform extrication.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I enjoy helping others. I don't currently have a job due to the crazy schedule I have with dance, but I still volunteer to help at the local petting zoo.

What are your responsibilities at the petting zoo & what is a favorite memory of your time there?
I volunteer at the petting zoo when I am not in dance practice to help feed and give water to the animals. I tend to leave the dirty cleaning to the employees. I love when there are baby goats that I can love on. Watching them jump around and play is something everyone should experience. I always was obsessed with llamas, so one day, my mom who is the manager of the petting zoo, surprised me with a llama, that is a day I will never forget.

Why did you choose JD Spencer as your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?.
I saw his work and loved it. After meeting with him for a consultation, we knew we had to hire him to do my pictures. I love that if we have an idea, my mom can text him what we are thinking, and he can make it happen. He is open to ideas, props, locations, etc. and we couldn’t ask for anyone better.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
As much as I would love to talk about dance, my peers wouldn't be too interested. I do have a big interest in solving crimes, which is why I plan on going to college for criminal justice. I do feel that subject is something peers can debate and join in the conversation
Picture
Photography by JD Spencer Photography
What do you find most interesting about solving crimes?
Solving crimes is like putting together a puzzle. It is to figure out what is important and what isn’t to prosecute the criminal. I’ve spoken with a detective and some of the stories he told me is fascinating. Sometimes it is the simplest thing that can convict someone, other times there is never enough evidence to solve the crime.

Do you watch crime shows or listen to podcasts? If so, which are your favorites?
I watch a lot of shows on ID channel. I also follow a few true crime/detective people on TikTok. I really don’t have a favorite, as long as they are giving details and the outcome, I am enjoying it.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Recovering from a broken pelvis. Not only was it hard physically to not be able to do for myself like I wanted or dance, it was hard mentally. I just had to push through and take my time to heal properly so I can get back to dancing.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t give up. Keep pushing. People will try to bring you down but don’t let them.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Graduated college with a degree in criminal justice and have a position with a law enforcement agency.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to be in the boat, tubing and swimming.

3 Things on your bucket list
Go to Alaska to see the Northern Lights.
Visit Greece.
Finish visiting all the states accessible by car.

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom. For most of my life she was a single mother working multiple jobs just to provide for me.
