Kennedy Proctor – North Carolina

Nomination by Jennifer Proctor
Photography by Legacy Studios and Jennifer Proctor
Issue 26 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: "Kennedy Proctor is a Freshman at Charles D. Owen High School. She is a Varsity Cheerleader, is on her High School Competition Cheer team, and she is also a Senior Level 3 athlete at Rockstar Cheer Greenville. Kennedy was voted as the MVP of her Middle School cheer team last season, where she was also Captain of her team.  Kennedy has a younger sister with special needs named Isabella. Isabella is disabled, and Kennedy is her hero. Isabella is always asking about her sister and she wants to be where Kennedy is. They share a very special bond and Kennedy does all she can to help and support Isabella. Kennedy is a natural born leader. She has a positive attitude, is humble, and nice to everyone she meets. Kennedy has a big heart. For 2 years, she raised money for Eblen Charities, and helped children in need at Eliada Home for Children during the Holidays. She has also been a junior coach for our local youth league for mini cheer camps over the last 3 years. Kennedy is very talented. She is a level 4 tumbler and she works very hard at the sport of Cheerleading. She has competed at the US Finals in Virginia Beach and the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Disney World. Kennedy is very inspiring!"
Picture
Tell us how you got involved with Cheerleading.
I began Cheerleading in Youth League at the age of 5 and then I started taking tumbling classes and private lessons when I was 8. Once I gained skills, I began All-Star Competitive cheer teams. I cheered for youth league through 6th grade and did all stars. In 7th grade, I tried out for my middle school cheer team. I cheered for middle school through 8th grade. I was made a Captain of my team in 8th grade and voted MVP for the year. Now, I am a freshman cheerleader on Varsity at my high school and I am at one of the top ten gyms in the world, Rockstar Cheer Greenville.

What is it like being a level 3 cheerleader and a level 4 tumbler?
It is amazing. I have worked hard to be where I am. It has taken me several years to get this far. Tumbling is one of my strengths and one of my favorite aspects of cheer.

What is your favorite tumbling pass and why?
A punch front round off back handspring tuck because it starts out slow but builds momentum through the pass. Punch fronts are special to me because I remember how excited I was to gain the skill. I absolutely love throwing tucks and layouts as well.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished is overcoming an injury. I had a hairline fracture in the growth plate of my elbow, and I was unable to stunt, tumble, or perform anything that required me to put pressure on my right arm. It was so incredibly hard for me because I wanted to give my all, but I couldn't. I could do sideline cheers, but it was difficult having those restrictions. I had to go through physical therapy which caused me a great deal of pain. It was a long road and I didn't know if I would ever be able to perform at a higher level again. Once I made a full recovery, I gained all my skills back and I am stronger now than I have ever been before.

Picture
Tell us about your sister Isabella and what she means to you.
Isabella was born with two different conditions in her brain. One condition was operable, and one condition will affect her entire life. She had major skull surgery on her head when she was thirteen months old. She was born with a syndrome that affects her brain stem and her balance and coordination. Isabella is six years old, is very petite, and about the same size as a three-year-old. She will always be small because she has low muscle tone. She is learning how to crawl, but she cannot walk yet. Isabella is very intelligent. She cannot say many words, but she understands everything you say.  She communicates with sign language and is always happy despite her condition. Isabella has a great sense of humor and she laughs often.
Picture
What do you think a strong leader should be like? Explain your reasoning.
A strong leader should be consistent, hardworking, all in all the time, humble, possess a positive attitude, be encouraging and uplifting of other team members, be a team player and ready to follow through with any position or task, be focused, treat others with respect, set a great example, and always be driven.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years and what are your plans for the future?
I see myself driving a car, having more independence, going to App State and hopefully becoming an App State Cheerleader, and taking classes to get my RN for Nursing. After I graduate college, I want to get married and have a beautiful family of my own.

What is your favorite activity that wasn't in your nomination?
Well, I really like to dance and I love to sing. I also enjoy playing music on the piano.
Picture
Do you have a hidden talent and what is it?
I am double jointed, and I can pop certain joints that most people cannot like my neck, for example. Being double jointed is kind of cool though because it helps me to be more limber and flexible.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized by staying on task. I have a schedule that I have to follow. I have to stay motivated and most importantly always take responsibility.

What are three things on your bucket list?
I want to go sky diving one day, take a trip to Greece, Italy, and Paris.
Picture
Who do you find inspiring?
Angel Rice. She is a three-time world champion in Cheerleading and the best tumbler in the sport.

What about you inspires others and why do you think you are inspiring?
I am a hard worker and I never miss a practice. I put in one hundred percent all the time. I think I inspire others because I treat others how I want to be treated. Even though I can perform on a higher level, I am just an average person. I stay humble because God has given me these abilities and I wouldn't be where I am without Him.

Dress to Kill, Without the Carnage

Fast fashion dominates today’s clothing retail industry so heavily that consumers have almost no choice but to feed into the evil cycle. Some stores in the malls and online fall under the category of "fast fashion"; as they swiftly pump cheap clothing into their stores to keep up with trends. These pieces are mass-produced in foreign factories by garment workers under conditions blatantly violating human rights. If the harsh chemicals and dyes used to produce these clothes were not alarming enough, think of the tons of pieces that end up in landfills as they are pushed, unsold, off of shelves to make way for the next fad. Ultimately, fast fashion is trampling us with its ever-growing carbon footprint.

How can we, as individuals, combat this enormous issue?
The answer: By adopting a sustainable style. Sustainable fashion strives to create clothing through more environmentally conscious and socially ethical means. We can make our contribution by thrifting, upcycling, and weaning our dependence on fast-fashion brands.

Fashion is cyclical. Trends always make their way back. Don’t wait for your favorite stores to come out with a new pair of 90’s inspired mom jeans, wander into your local thrift store and buy a pair of jeans that someone’s mom actually wore. And end up paying a fraction of the cost!
Picture
Grace (right) wears a thrifted silk button-down, a thrifted belt with a butterfly embellishment, and barrettes hand-made by an Etsy shop owner. She distressed her Levi jeans herself! Nadia (left) also wears a thrifted chain belt (like one seen on Bella Hadid!) and a hand-made key necklace.
Thrifting is the perfect way to sustainably buy clothes at fast fashion prices.

Secondhand shopping doesn’t have to be beat-up t-shirts and someone’s ratty old dress. Instead, think of it as a hunt for treasure and an opportunity to nurture your own personal style. There aren’t models covering the walls donning the "most in-style" pieces. Thrifting environments put you in charge of your style.

Picture
Madison Dedieu, Olivia Sexton, Jordan Hahn, Caroline Alegado, Eva Martinez, and Kelli Robertson demonstrate how you can get an entire outfit (and props!) for under $20 at most thrift stores, regardless of your style during their Thrift Store Fashion Wars Challenge during iTi STYLE Weekend!

Another plus: never again will you worry about wearing the same outfit as someone else. If you’re creative, you can even upcycle your own old clothes to make them into brand new, original outfits. Distressing an old pair of jeans will give the same effect as any name brand ripped denim.

Next time you find yourself on the hunt for clothing, consider ways you can make your wardrobe more sustainable.

Before buying brand new, take a peek at a nearby thrift store, you never know what you’ll find.

Laken Reed

Laken Reed – North Carolina
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by TAP Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Laken Reed is an inspiring teen. She is co-captain of the varsity cheerleading squad and coaches young girls in youth league cheerleading, helping to inspire them to become confident young women. Laken loves to encourage others to do well. She recently won All-American with the Universal Cheerleading Association and will travel to London England to be in the New Year’s Day parade. Laken is active in YoungLife and her church.

Picture
What is your favorite thing about being co-captain for your varsity cheerleading squad?

My favorite thing about being co-captain for the varsity cheerleading team at Mountain Heritage would definitely be that I get to be a leader and have underclassmen look up to me and I get to show them exactly how I learned to be the cheerleader I am today. Showing them that it is okay to mess up as long as you continue on with a smile.

Tell me a little but about the Universal Cheerleading Association you are involved in.

UCA is an organization that runs cheerleading camps for JV and Varsity cheer teams. UCA has a cheer team called All-American. In All American you are chosen by performing in front of a panel of judges. You perform a cheer, dance and you do a jump. The dance and cheer you learn on your own time while you are at UCA camp, in a 3-day period. A day later you are announced in front of the whole camp if you got a spot on the team.

Picture
What do you love most about coaching your youth league cheer team?

The best part of coaching youth league cheer is getting to show these girls what started my love for cheerleading. I get to teach them how to be playing a sport and love doing it. I tell them all the time that cheer is not a sport for just anyone, you have to really want to learn.

Picture
How has your faith impacted who you are and how you choose to live your life?

My faith in Jesus Christ helps me day to day. I know that without him I am nothing. I talk to him daily, and I have parents that have taken me to church, raised me on reading the bible, and showed me how to do right in His name. In everything I do, I ask myself what would Jesus do? I cannot lie and say that it is easy because nothing is easy, but I am loved by Him unconditionally.

How are you involved in your faith through your community?

I am involved in a club through my high school called YoungLife, which is Christian based. We have weekly meetings where we read the bible, sing songs, and play games all while fellowshipping with our close friends. In the summer we take a huge trip to YoungLife camp, where we grow our relationship with friends from our high school and make new ones. The biggest part of Younglife is trying to get your friends from school to have a relationship with God so you bring them to Younglife!

I also have volunteered in the past two major floods that has happened by packing buckets with supplies to help people on the coast of North Carolina and Alabama have the living essentials.

Picture

What is one piece of advice or encouragement you would give to someone reading this?

My biggest piece of advice is to always be yourself, and love yourself. Life is short and you should never try to change who you are to please anyone. You are loved even when you do not feel it. Always show your confidence and be strong because you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

10 Ways to be More Environmentally Friendly

8/23/2019

Picture

Article by Julia Ischinger
Issue 22 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Humans are realizing the lasting impact we have on the Earth and how it leads to negative issues such as global warming and climate change. We are also noticing that things such as plastic are getting thrown away and hurting our environment. Here are 10 everyday changes you can make to be more environmentally friendly.

#1 Take Shorter Showers
The first way you can try and be more environmentally friendly is by taking shorter showers. If you take shorter showers you are automatically reducing your water consumption. This is an easy change you can make to your routine and helps the earth as well.

#2 Turn off Lights
When you are leaving a room it is important to turn the lights off. Turning the lights off reduces your energy consumption. When you use less energy, it is decreasing power plant emissions, which is one of the main causes of climate change.

#3 Unplug Things Not Being Used
As well as turning off lights, unplugging things that aren’t being used also reduces energy being used. Therefore, when you’re not using your phone charger or anything else plugged in, it’s a good idea to unplug it.

#4 RECYCLE!!
One of the most obvious ways to be more environmentally friendly is to recycle everything with a recyclable label on it. Recycling ensures that less waste is thrown away and instead it can be reused. Many times, things that are thrown away have a bad impact on the environment and recycling solves that.

#5 Use Reusable Items
Instead of having to recycle, it’s better to try and use reusable items. From water bottles, to reusable shopping bags, it’s automatically better for the environment and saves you money.

#6 Use Less Plastic Items
A lot of plastic is affecting ocean ecosystems and the animals that live in it. Some oceans are filled with plastic and the plastic is getting consumed by the sea animals. Not only does this affect the animals, but when we eat seafood those plastic particles could get into our bloodstream. This is a big issue which is why we should strive to eliminate plastic usage.

#7 Don’t Drive
Driving less ensures less energy is used and released into the atmosphere. If you are going somewhere short distance, try and use an alternative like biking or walking. This automatically ensures fewer fossil fuels are used.

#8 Eat Less Meat
Eating less meat, especially beef can help improve the environment. Meat consumption is a part of global warming because the animal agriculture to make meat releases a lot of harmful greenhouse gases. Therefore, you can try and reduce the amount of meat you consume.

#9 Use LED lights
Light bulbs contribute to the heat we release into the atmosphere. If you use LED lights, it’s an environmentally friendly alternative because it isn’t as wasteful as normal light bulbs. The next time you change a light bulb try to get this friendly alternative.

#10 Plant a Tree
An automatic thing that could positively impact the environment is planting trees. This gives people more oxygen to breath and automatically makes the earth greener. Our rain forests are getting cut down, therefore planting trees ensures that we have the oxygen we need.

Picture

Jocelyn Jung – North Carolina
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Georgette Jung
Photography by Suzanne Melendez Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jocelyn Jung is a beta club member and on the academic principal's list. She is currently a first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Her biggest passion is with a nonprofit charity she founded with her siblings called Donatesport.org to help underserved children in North Carolina, and around the world with the gift of sport and clothing. The charity repurposes the gear and clothing donated to bring hope, inspiration, self-worth and most of all smiles to the children. Jocelyn has worked hundreds of hours and collected and distributed over a half a million dollars’ worth of sports clothing and gear in just three years. She is a true inspiration.
Picture
Please tell us about the nonprofit charity you and your brothers started.
Our nonprofit charity, DonateSport.org was started by my brothers and I to help children all around the globe with the gift of sport and clothing. We want to try and make a difference by gathering donations to ship out to those who need it most.

How did your passion of volunteering begin?
My passion of volunteering began when I heard about my grandma’s stories of being in an orphanage until she was 16 in Swidwin, Poland. This was caused from a tragedy that took both of her parent’s lives. She was separated from her sisters and put into an orphanage where she was only given one pair of shoes and hardly any articles of clothing every year. This gave us the idea to help kids in the same situation as my grandmother experienced when she was a child.

Picture
Tell us about some of your other volunteering opportunities.
A volunteering opportunity that I’ve had is Adopt-A-Highway, in which my family and I go a few times a year to our assigned street that is over a mile long and pick up litter and trash. I really care about the environment and want to help anyway I can. Another opportunity is Beta Club where I participate in gathering donations for charities through projects and events.

If you had the opportunity to start another charity, what would you name it and what would it be?
If I was able to start another charity, it would be for helping animals since I love animals and I have two dogs currently (Boykin Spaniels). I would call the charity Furry Friend Rescue. The charity would gather donations to help rescue animals and care for them.
Picture
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am also an aspiring photographer and often take photos of my friends. Making my friends feel good about themselves. My favorite subjects are studio and outdoor portraits of people, and nature photography. This is because I love increasing my knowledge by taking photos of my friends and family inside and outside, shooting in manual mode with soft boxes and backgrounds.

Isabella Soto

Picture

Isabella Soto - California
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Alicia Soto
Photography by Holly Ireland Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Isabella Soto is a smart, charismatic, very hardworking girl. She not only believes in herself but believes in others too. She has been dancing competitively for 4 years now and modeling for almost a year. She has a strong passion for both dance and modeling. These are outlets for her, a way for her to release whatever she is feeling at that moment. She sets goals for herself and works hard to achieve them, no matter what it takes. She is a good student and maintains excellent grades even with a hectic dance and modeling schedule. I am very proud of the strong and independent woman she is becoming.
Picture
Tell us about your life being a dancer.
It started out as a hobby when I was 7. I took one Jazz class and fell in love. The following year I added Hip Hop and then my 3rd year decided I wanted to try out for the competition team and made it. Since then I have never looked back. It is a huge passion of mine. I love getting on stage and performing. I have been dancing for 6 years now and have competed 4 of those. I train in Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Pointe, ACRO and Contemporary. Contemporary being my favorite.

What is it like being a model?
It's very rewarding and a lot of fun. I have met so many beautiful and talented models/dancers from modeling. It does require hard work and dedication. Some photo shoots are early morning and can last hours, some are shorter. It just depends on what the goal of the photographer is. Photographers also love for you to come prepared, meaning ready to start shooting by having your dance poses in mind prior.

If you were not a dancer or a model, what would you be doing?
A photographer

When you create goals for yourself, what are some ways you achieve them?
I write them down to start. Having them visible on paper helps me to stay focused. I then figure out what it takes to reach that goal. After I have all this written down, I start working towards it and I don’t stop until I have succeeded.
Picture
What is the hardest thing you’ve every accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I ever accomplished was my first dance Solo. I have been on stage many times before, but it was with my teammates. Having to get on stage by self was terrifying but with the love, support and encouragement of my mom, teacher, sweet friend and teammate, I was able to walk out with confidence and perform.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The best advice I give is the same advice my mom gave me and that is always believe in yourself and stay true to who you are. Work hard, be honest, be kind and never give up on your dreams.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
Another trait I have learned from my mom is our daily schedule that we stick to like glue. We have learned straying from it is not a good thing. Our schedule is a little more relaxed during my off season from competition,
Picture
In school, what is your favorite subject and why?
Language Arts because I love reading, writing and grammar.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I see myself continuing to model and acting

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Going to the trampoline park

3 Things on your bucket list – Go to Australia, Meet Misty Copeland, and skydiving

Who do you find inspiring?
Misty Copeland because despite the struggles she faced when she was young, she pushed through, worked hard and never gave up on her dreams.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I would say my hard work, dedication, support of others and being kind.

Picture

Alyssa Martinez – New Mexico
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Athena Martinez
Photography by Anchored Memory Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Alyssa Martinez is a multi-sport athlete. She has been on Varsity since her freshman year and she plays Volleyball, Basketball, and Tennis at Capital high school. She works hard on the court and equally as hard off the court. She is an honor student and is there for her teammates and classmates on and off the court and classroom. She is the true definition of STUDENT-ATHLETE. One of her goals is to be 2020 athlete of the year and if she accomplishes that goal, we believe it may be the first father daughter name on the gym wall for 1996 (her father) and 2020 athlete of the year. We can’t wait to see her enjoy this school year and to see what the future holds for Alyssa.
Picture
How did you become a multi-sport athlete?
I became a multi-sport athlete by gaining interest in basketball and being curious about other sports afterwards. I also enjoy playing several sports because it keeps me busy and is a great way to take my mind off everything and I feel like I can always be myself around teammates. I built many special friendships through playing sports and I appreciate them for all they do. I also like the different dynamics and strategies each sport offers.

Picture
How have sports been a big part of your life and of who you are today?
Sports have been a big part of my life because I've learned so much about who I am through each sport I play as well as learning life lessons. The support I get from my Jaguar family means a lot and gives me the motivation to push through anything. Playing sports has made me into a helpful, passionate, hardworking, and confident leader with so many great memories on the court and in the classroom. I have had so many great experiences and talks as well that have helped me thanks to my family, teammates, and coaches. I know I will have lifelong friends with the relationships I have built over the years with my teammates.
Picture
Why do you think you are a good role model for younger kids?
I think I am a good role model for younger kids because I manage my time well and I've learned that it is important to be a good student athlete. I've played three sports throughout high school while maintaining a 3.9 grade point average. I have also done volleyball and tennis camps with younger kids, and my favorite part about it is helping them learn the sport and skills needed to improve. I also have invited them to games to see me play and to show them how to have a good attitude, be a team player, and give hundred percent all the time.

Picture
If you could only pick one sport to play for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
It would be basketball. I've been playing since the third grade and it is my favorite sport. Basketball has been a big part of my life and I have so much fun playing it. In the future I could see myself teaching younger kids how to play it as well, just how I learned. I enjoy basketball because it involves communication, many strategies, quick decisions, and it tests your physical and mental toughness.

Picture
If you never tried playing volleyball, basketball or tennis, what other sports do you think you would have tried and why?
I think I would have tried playing soccer and softball. Sports is a good way to keep kids active and busy while having fun at the same time. I would make an effort to try each sport a few times until I found a few that fit best for me to not just play but learn skills for life as well.

Morgan Day – West Virginia
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Annie Simms Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Fun-filled, magnetic, beautiful, accomplished, selfless…just a few words to describe Morgan Day. She is a 2019 high school graduate; a member of the National Honor Society, BETA Club, FOR Club, and the Varsity Cheer Captain. With her demanding classes and the extracurricular activities, Morgan still managed to graduate in the Top of Class with a 4.2 GPA which lead to her being the recipient of an Academic Scholarship. She will attend UC in the fall to get her BSN and plans to work in the neonatal field. Just recently, Morgan was chosen to compete in the Miss Teen WV pageant in October.
Picture
Tell us about your cheerleading career.
I started cheering when I was three years old for my local midget league football team. I continued cheering for midget league until I was old enough to cheer for my school. I started cheering for my elementary school, then middle school and all the way through high school. It hasn’t always been an easy journey for me, and I believe that is what made me want to continue to push myself to be better every single year. My senior year, I had waited four years to become captain. I tried my absolute hardest to be the best role model, and leader I could be. I got chosen to be a captain and that was the best feeling in the world. My favorite thing about being a cheerleader is seeing all of the people and kids in the stands smiling and cheering along with you because then you know you’ve successfully done your job at making people believe in cheerleading and the wonderful person it makes you become.

What are some of your favorite places to travel and why?
I have traveled many different places in the U.S., but there are a few that I would go back to any day of the year at any time. My absolute favorite place to travel is Florida. I love warm weather, beaches, and feeling like I have no worries. My next favorite place to travel is Pigeon Forge, TN. Just in 2019, I have visited Tennessee five different times, and I still haven’t gotten the chance to do everything there. Last but certainly not least is New York City, NY. I had the chance to visit NYC with the National Honor Society organization at my school.

Picture
Tell us about some of your volunteering opportunities at nursing homes.
My experience and volunteer work at nursing homes has been one of the most heart-warming and educational things I have ever done. I learned so much from watching nurses distribute medication, give shots, and care for every single patient and not miss a beat. Just over the course of two days, the patients were so kind and loving to me and it created a bond with them that I’ll never forget in a lifetime.

Picture

How do you feel about being chosen to compete in the Miss Teen WV Pageant?
I am beyond grateful to be accepted to compete in the Miss Teen WV Pageant this fall. I want to be a great role model to all the young teenage girls out there who just need a boost of confidence every now and then. I hope that this experience shows teenage girls that they can do anything they put their mind to. I am beyond blessed to even say I’m competing.
Picture
What are 3 adjectives to describe yourself? Why did you pick them?
Three adjectives to describe myself would be outgoing, kind-hearted and energetic. I think that I am a very outgoing person because there is never a dull moment around me. I think I’m kind-hearted because I have sympathy for everyone no matter what their situation is. I describe myself as energetic because in order to be a cheerleader, you have to be energetic and completely fun-filled.

How did you become involved in athletics and what is your favorite sport to play?
I was introduced to sports at a very young age. I signed up to play baseball with my brother. In First Grade, I started playing basketball. Stepping out on the court for the first time changed everything. I fell in love with the game of basketball. It truly is my favorite sport; I love everything about it. The adrenaline pumping through your body, the excitement of playing, the team bond you grow, being completely exhausted but still pushing to play your best, there is no other feeling. In high school, I participated in Volleyball, Track, and Tennis. I couldn't get enough of sports. Each sport gave me more opportunities to learn new abilities and better ways to show people my faith.

What do you love most about reaching out and helping kids in your community?
The most amazing thing is the incredible love and joy the kids share. Love and joy that only a kid can have. There is no other feeling than being stopped in the hall and having to give hugs to classes of kids with a smile on their face.  That can turn any bad day into a good one. I had the amazing opportunity to work in the classroom with the teachers and see the kid learn new material every day. One of the greatest accomplishments I have had is being in the class helping a student figure out a problem. I got so much joy when they finally got it and their face lit up with a smile.

Picture
How do you strive to be a better person every day through your faith?
My Faith has given me the desire to please my Lord. This gives makes me strive to be a better person by making me think about how my actions look to others and how to be more Christ-like. Someone told me that ‘I could be the only Bible someone will ever read.’ So, I pushed myself to tell others and show through my action the amazing grace God has given me. I don’t want to disappoint Him. One day I want to hear my Lord tell me ‘Well done thy good and faithful servant.’ So, until then, I will strive to be in my faith to be a better person.

How has your faith impacted who you are as well as your daily life.
I grew up in a Christian based family, I get to see every day the love my parents shared for the Lord. When I was six years old, I came to know Jesus Christ as my Savior. My faith has helped me in school it made me feel strong and not willing to be persuaded to fall short of the person I know I can become. Faith helped me make the decision of not going to parties or get wrapped up in drama. My Faith pushed me to be a better teammate, someone my parents would be proud of, to be a better role model to the kids I worked with, but most importantly I didn’t want to disappoint my God.

Picture
What is the best advice you would give to someone?
To have confidence in who you are. God made you exactly the way He wanted you. He doesn't have ‘oops’ in his vocabulary. Show people the story God gave you.

Anna Grace Scholten - Georgia
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Amber Bounds Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Anna Grace Scholten is a varsity tennis player, varsity cheerleader, currently top 5 in her class and a natural leader! She can be found volunteering in the community or working on missions. She spent much of this summer on a church mission trip giving her time to help those less fortunate. Anna Grace is the epitome of a teen that inspires others and I am more than proud to nominate her!
Picture
What is your favorite activity or pastime?
My favorite pastime or activity is tennis. I started in the 5th grade taking private lessons and then began to play USTA tournaments and then school tennis. This is truly where I learned the most about hard work and determination. I began to realize early on you are only going to get out, what you put in. It has been through many long, hot, and cold practices, camps, and tournaments that have brought me to where I am now. As an 8th grader, I played #1 singles for the high school JV team. As a freshman and sophomore, I played #2 singles for the varsity team. Last year I played #1 singles. For the past three years, we have been region champs and have gone further in state playoffs than in years past. I love being part of a team and supporting each other. Last season, I was nominated by In the Game magazine as one of two outstanding girl tennis players in southeast Ga. I am excited about my upcoming senior season.

How does your work ethic help you stay positive through hard times?
I am a very driven person. When I put my mind to something, I am determined to achieve whatever that may be. I believe that if you are going to do something you should put in 110%. My work ethic is something I am very proud of because not everyone is driven. Not everyone wants to put in the work even when it's hard, whether that is school, cheer, or tennis. As a student, I have always taken my academics very seriously. I am currently ranked 5th out of 401 within our student body. It's not about the number, but it is about doing my best. One of my favorites quotes is “Stay Positive, Work hard, Make it happen.” I stay positive through the tough times by trusting that God has a perfect plan, and everything always happens for a reason.
Picture
How did you get involved with cheerleading? How long have you been a cheerleader for?
As a child, I took years of dance and gymnastics. So, I knew that when I was of age, I wanted to try out for my school’s cheerleading squad. I have cheered for the past six years. This year I am a senior, and I am unfortunate it is my last year. I love being on the sidelines, cheering and dancing for our Coffee High Trojans.

What was it like becoming an All-American cheerleader?
One of the highlights of my high school cheerleading career was making the All-American cheerleading team my Junior year of 2018. It is not an easy process. To try out for all-American, you have to be first nominated and then go through a tryout, where you do a cheer and jumps by yourself in front of the whole camp. The process can be very intimidating. I did not make the team my freshman or sophomore years, but I didn’t get discouraged or give up on a goal I had set. I came back my junior year and made the All- American NCA team.
Picture
What is it like being a part of the FCA leadership team for 4 years?
Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a great club that I am so proud to be affiliated with. I begin in the club while in middle school. It was there I was asked to be on the leadership team. We meet every week and have a student-led devotion and pray for our school, students, and teachers. Having a Christian club on school campuses is such a blessing. We have been able to give out over 1,000 bibles to students. We also have raised money for missions work in third world countries.

Tell us about your church mission trip this summer. What was your favorite part of the trip? Why?
In the past two summers, I participated in a local community camp, known as Camp One-fifty-one. During this camp, we go and repair the homes of the less fortunate in my hometown of Douglas, Ga. The camp is split into groups of about 9 or 10 people. Each group is assigned a house to repair for the week. During the week, we get to know our homeowners by bringing them food, talking, and sharing the gospel with them. This past summer, my site group worked on a single-wide trailer. We repaired the roof, replaced the floor, installed five new windows, new cabinets and a door. This camp has become very dear to my heart. I love meeting new people and serving God together. Yes, I do have over 175 community service hours, but it is so much more than just that. It is about the gift of serving others.
Picture
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I plan to go off to college in the fall of 2020 and pursue a degree in biology or chemistry. So, hopefully, I will be in a pharmacy program soon. I am so excited about meeting new people and pursuing my dreams.

What are three things on your bucket list?
I want to attend a grand slam tennis tournament, travel Europe, and meet Thomas Rhett.

Is there anything else you would like to say?
Something else I would like to say is even though this interview seems like everything has been good with some hard work along the way, it has not been easy. I have had many setbacks and frustrations along the way. Many times, I have felt like things were going against me. However, I do think that it is in those times of heartache you grow as a person in your character and strength. I would encourage anyone to never give up on something you put your mind to. All things are possible!

By Sierra Zaccagnino
Pennsylvania
Issue 22 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Awaken
By Katie Kacvinsky
Genres: Fiction- Resistance to Government; Science Fiction

Summary:
Awaken follows Maddie, a teenage girl living in 2060 where the world revolves around digital life and insane technology that can do almost anything the mind can think of. Her father happens to be the founder of digital school, which means that a high-tech lifestyle has been the only way Maddie knows how to live her life. However, when she meets Justin, someone who believes in intimacy and real-life relationships, her whole world starts to turn upside down, leaving her with big decisions to make.

Personal Review:
Even though this book was written in 2012, I think that it truly hits the mark on how technology has and could continue to affect society in the future. While it is interesting to see Kacvinsky’s take on the seemingly limitless powers of technology in the future, this book makes you think about how far digital life can invade reality and destroy the connections that people have with each other and the real world, which is something that I believe a lot of readers can delve into easily with this story.

All The Bright Places
By Jennifer Niven
Genres: Fiction- Friendship, Emotional Problems

Summary:
In All the Bright Places, the story of two afflicted teens, Violet Markey and Theodore Finch, intertwine in an unforgettable, life-changing way. Once the two of them start to connect and help each other live their own lives for once, they create a bond that is strong between the two of them, but delicate to the world around them that seems to be closing in at times. Can the two of them save each other, or are they too far lost?

Personal Review:
This book surpassed all my expectations and I have truly never encountered a book like this before. I found that the alternating passages of both Violet and Finch’s perspectives intensified the dramatic aspect of the story and allowed the reader to see into the different working of each of the characters’ minds in a unique way. This book will make you laugh at sometimes, and cry at others (which honestly varies between both happy and sad tears). I would recommend this book to any interested in going on an emotional rollercoaster, which I promise is more appealing than it may sound!

Girls With Sharp Sticks
By Suzanne Young
Genres: Fiction- Private Schools; Science Fiction

Summary:
Situated primarily in an exclusive all-girls private school, the novel Girls With Sharp Sticks tells a tale of girls who are taught to be obedient, respectful, and overall perfect for prospective men after graduation. But as skepticism and defiance start to spread, many of the girls start to doubt their controlled education and wonder what their Guardians are keeping from them. Finding out the truth may require breaking a nail.

Personal Review:
I was originally interested in reading this book because I was an immense fan of Suzanne Young’s best-selling series, The Program, which I finished in record-breaking time because I was completely hooked on the plot with so many twist and turns. Fortunately, once I started making my way through Girls With Sharp Sticks, I was not disappointed in the slightest. I could discern Young’s writing style fairly well, and her brilliant plot twists got me once again. If you are also a fan of the Program, there are some similar elements from that storyline in this novel, so I would recommend that you look at Young’s newest work. For any new readers of Young or anyone simply interested in science fiction, this book is a fantastic page-turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat with its perplexing mysteries, complex characters, and thought-provoking philosophical questions.

Alexandria Esquibel - Texas
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Jennifer Gonzalez
Photography by J&A Infinity Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Alexandria Esquibel is an inspiring teen in many ways. She is a big sister and role model to her four little siblings, an awesome student, an amazing dancer, and beyond focused in everything she sets goals for. Alexandria is a Lieutenant in the Varsity Dance Team at Brandeis High School. She not only is a part of this special team, but she is also a member of the Ballet Company at Brandeis High School as well. She inspires her dancers to strive to be their best and to always have a positive attitude. I couldn’t be prouder of my inspiring teen and all her hard work she has accomplished at the age of seventeen.
Picture
Tell us about your dance history. How long have you been dancing?
I started dancing at four years old. I was inspired by the movie, “Shall We Dance” which is based on Ballroom dances. I self-taught all the dance routines throughout the movie. It wasn’t until 4th grade that I joined Arthur Murray Dance studio which was solely Ballroom dance. I loved it but unfortunately couldn’t continue because my Mom had to start working on Saturdays, which was when the classes were. I then joined Chrissy’s Dance Academy in sixth grade and stayed with this company until sophomore year of high school which was when I made the Dance Team at Brandeis.

What is your favorite style of dance and why?
My favorite dance style is Hip Hop because it is the style that I show most of my personality and facials in. While dancing hip hop, I can show off my girly sassy side and my ‘don’t mess with me’ side which my teammates would call it “The Eyebrow”. It is when I raise my right eyebrow with a piercing stare. My personality shines during my hip hop routines.
Picture
What is it like being a part of the Brandeis spirit organization?
Being a part of Brandeis Spirit Organization is like being at a big family reunion, except it’s every day for me. Any school event, pep rally, football game, or any sport game is when all of Spirit comes together. We all have a role and play a part to keep our organization a welcoming and respectful environment. Being a part of the organization has shaped me into being the person I am today. In the Spirit Organization there are a lot of rules to follow. We have our rules, because we’ve been taught that we are we are not only representing ourselves but also, we are the representation of Brandeis high school.
Picture
What is so special about your family? Tell us about them and why they mean so much to you!
My family is special because they are my number one fans. There is not one game, performance, and/or event I could think of that none of them were there to support me. Every time I look into the audience and see my mom, stepdad, dad, grandma, and all my siblings faces, my heart warms up. I know I’m very grateful to have a family that understands and motivates me to be better. Not everyone has that, and I wish they did. My family is my life. I am aware that I wouldn’t be who I am today or where I am today if it wasn’t for them. I am proud to be a part of my crazy fun loud family.

Picture
If you were not dancing, what do you think you would be doing and why?
If I hadn’t pursued dancing. I would probably would have pursued sports. During my dancing life, I was also a volleyball player for the YMCA. I was a part of this sports organization for three seasons. I didn’t continue playing because unfortunately when I tried out for my middle school team, I ended up not making it and was slightly discouraged. I did enjoy volleyball and now play any chance I get.

Monica Ritchey - Ohio
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Sharon Holy Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The nomination: Monica Ritchey started dance at the age of 3 and started cheering for youth football when she was in third grade. She started competitive cheerleading in 5th grade. She was a football cheerleader in middle school and was a junior advisor for the youth football cheerleaders at that time. She was a JV football cheerleader in 9th and 10th grade and a varsity football her junior year. Monica is now in her senior year and is currently captain of the Varsity Football Squad. Monica loves to cheer; it is her passion. She loves cheering for her team and getting the crowd pumped. She also loves knowing that her two little nieces want to cheer because they come to the games and see how much fun it is!! Her two older sisters who both cheered were her inspiration. Monica is a straight A student and is VP of NHS. She is involved in future leaders and student government. Monica takes pride in her school and tries to set a positive example for others. She enjoys getting others psyched for their sports teams and for being the best they can be.
Picture
How has cheerleading impacted your life in a positive way?
Cheerleading has been a part of my life since the day I was born. When I was younger, I would attend every game and competition my two older sisters cheered at. I marveled at the synchronization of the motions, was mesmerized by the flexibility showcased in the jumps, and was starstruck by the sky-high flips. I fell in love with the energy that radiated off the cheerleaders and the obvious comradery among them. Becoming a cheerleader was a dream come true for me. It makes me feel like one of my life goals has already been completed every time I put on the uniform and head to the field. Furthermore, cheerleading has given me some of my best friends. Your team really becomes your family which means that you always have a support group when needed. Some of the bonds I’ve made throughout my cheerleading career are lifelong and I am forever grateful for that.

When it comes to cheerleading, what is your favorite thing about the sport?
My favorite thing about cheerleading is the performances. The excitement that consumes me before every halftime show is like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. I love to show off my and my teammates' hard work each time we take the field. The high energy that circulates each one of us is one of the best feelings. Although the pain of hearing the words “full out again” leaving my coach’s lips is unbearable, we all know that the actual performance will be worth all the trouble in the end.

Picture
When you are older, would you want to own your own cheer gym? What are your thoughts? Why or why not?
Although owning a cheer gym would be fun and exciting, I do not think it is in the cards for me. Owning a gym demands more than the love of the sport, it requires a huge financial commitment. Coaches put a lot of hard work and energy into perfecting performances which is something I would be interested in. I know after college I will miss it so much that it will draw me into becoming a cheer coach, but owning a gym is not for me.

What would be 3 words to describe a cheerleading squad? Explain why you chose those 3 words.
First and foremost a cheerleading squad is motivated. All the teams that I have had the pleasure of being part of have been filled with girls and boys who are extremely driven. There is always room for improvement. A motion that could be sharper or a jump that could be higher. A cheerleader’s work is never done.

The second word that describes a cheerleading squad is spirited. Getting the crowd involved and excited is our main priority so having pep and energy is required. Even on bad days you need to leave everything behind when you step on the mat, field, or floor and give it your all.

Lastly, a squad must be united. Every cheerleader needs to understand that they must do their best not only for themselves, but also for their entire squad. The saying “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link” surely comes to mind when thinking about cheer. Your squad becomes your family and you all want each other to succeed.

Picture
Tell us about something awesome you do when you’re not cheering.
When I am not cheering, I spend the majority of my time planning and volunteering for NHS. I am vice president of this club; therefore, I have a lot of responsibilities that require a plethora of my time and energy. This is my second year in the group and it truly has had a positive impact on my life. NHS has allowed me to get out in my community and get involved. From cleaning up beaches to dressing up as characters for the Haunted Hayrides we truly do it all. Currently my fellow officers and I are working hard to bring a new fun dance to our school. Between cheer practices and NHS, I barely have time for anything else, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

How did you become interested in music?
I was introduced to my 6th grade band teacher when he told me to sign up for the flute instead of my originally intended instrument. He said he had a feeling I would be great at this if I gave it a chance. I didn’t think much of it when I first started out. I was placed in the last chair at my first chair test, but that only fueled me to win the next chair test. So, I worked every single day and played many different genres until the next test where I placed first and held my place until the present day. I fell in love with music for the passion, competitiveness, and family that it brought to me. With the help from Mr. Torch I found this passion for music that still burns into me and I couldn’t be happier.

Tell us about your hearing disease and how it has affected your life and music.
My hearing disease is known as, Degenerative Neurological Nerves of the Ear Canal, and it has affected my life in many ways. At first, it caused my life to spiral out of control as I was just being introduced into the world of music as a performer. However, I learned later that it wasn’t a boundary, but an advantage. I learned how to perform using different methods other than just my sense of hearing. I learned that I would always have obstacles in life but with hard work they were never impossible to overcome. My hearing disease will always affect my life, but it will never limit me or my successes.
Picture
What are some ways that you are active within your school?

Tell us how you got involved with cheer?
I got into cheerleading at a young age. I started out when my mom put me gymnastics at age three and fell in love with tumbling. As I got older, I shifted into All-Star cheer. I continued in All-Star cheer until middle school cheer and I fell in love with the adrenaline of competing at this level. Throughout high school cheer I’ve grown into the person I am today. It has taught me so much in life. Things such as teamwork & that you can’t give up when it gets hard.

When it comes to cheerleading what is your favorite thing about the sport and why?
My favorite thing about cheerleading is the adrenaline I get when competing in competitions. Throughout my three years of varsity cheer I have won three state titles. The feeling of winning this title is one of the best feelings ever. It’s a feeling of accomplishment.

If you had to pick one, would you rather only cheer at games or only compete at competitions? Why?
I’ve cheered both on the sidelines and competitions. I enjoy competitions more than I ever will enjoy sideline cheer. The competitions give me chills that I could never explain. I love cheering competition cheer more than anything.
Picture

Tell us about your three state titles you have won and why you think you won them!
I’ve won three state titles and through this I have learned so much. I’ve worked so hard in cheerleading and have been so motivated throughout my time spent in this sport. This is what has led me and my team to our three state titles. I couldn’t be more thankful for the people I have had on my teams over the years and the goals we have accomplished.

How is it possible to achieve anything through perseverance and hard work?
Perseverance and hard work play a big part in my cheerleading life. Throughout my years in cheerleading I’ve been through many injuries and hard situations to handle. Pushing through those things made me successful. It has not only made me successful but also helped better my team. Without hard work and dedication, I never would have achieved three state titles.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to be where you are today?
I would tell someone who wants to be where I am today that they should never give up. Also, that things take time and hard work is a big key in these things. Accomplishing goals takes a lot of time & you should never give up and go after what you want. Believe in yourself and believe in what you do.

What is it like bring a BMP Model?
Being a BMP model is one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life as I get to express myself in so many ways. I’ve always had a passion for modeling and taking pictures. I also get to enjoy and get to know the other models. I’m so blessed to be able to do this with such an amazing photographer.
Picture
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/What are your plans for the future?
In five years, I see myself graduated college and working toward my speech pathology license and then hopefully working in my career path. I hope to have accomplished what I have been dreaming of for many years.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

With everything on my plate, I get stressed here and there; however, I try and make time to plan out when I’m going to do things and set my priorities in order.

How did you start your photography business in high school?
I never expected to start my business so early on in life; it kind of snuck up on me! I started by taking Christmas card photos for families for free in order to gain some experience and build my portfolio. Soon, I was hearing from people who had seen the photos and they wanted photos too! Everything kind of took off from there. I also began sharing my photos on social media and many of my seniors have found me from there!

What are some ways that you have given back to your community through volunteer work?
I volunteered to teach a photography class for a local 4-H club. We had a total of four meetings spread out through the year and each meeting was two hours long. I did my best to teach the kids everything that I knew and make it fun for them!

Picture
Walk us through what it is like being in one of your photography classes that you have taught.
Oh gosh. We had so much fun. I think that my favorite meeting was when we took a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It was so much fun to walk around and look at all the animals, and the indoor lighting gave my students a good challenge to get their exposure right for their photos. Everyone had such a good time and the photos were really fun! Another great meeting was held at my house on our ranch property. I taught all the kids how to take my favorite kind of photo -silhouettes. We made a BBQ and spent some fun times together waiting for the sun to go down. Once the sun was down, it was go time! So many giggles and amazing photos were shared.

Tell us about what you are majoring in at Cal Poly.
I am so in love with my major. It is called Graphic Communications, or GRC and it covers a wide range of topics that combine art and technology. It has been described as "creative problem solving" with anything related to design or print. Career opportunities range from web design and development to advertising and packaging. I was so happy to find a major that would give me a creative outlet while still being practical and employable!
Picture
If you were not a photographer, what would you be and why?
I would definitely want to work in design if I was not a photographer, and that is why I am majoring in GRC. If my photography business doesn't take off to become a full-time career, I would love to work for a magazine or in the wedding industry designing invites, menus, all that good stuff.

Stella Wright – California
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nominated by Elisha Wright
Photography by Ray Clanton
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Stella Wright is inspiring!! Stella landed a modeling contract at the age of 14 with Meraki Model Management LA after attending an Industry Network event in Los Angeles. Stella has been acting in theater since she was a preschooler, and when she moved from Indiana to California, she joined Tower Talent Studio West where they encouraged her to model in addition to strengthening her acting skills such as improv and TV/Film acting. Stella approaches acting and modeling with creativity. She also loves to write and took home a first-place prize at her school’s Poetry Slam contest. Stella is also a deep thinker and advocate for those who are struggling, who feel marginalized, or who don’t “fit in”. One day, all these strengths combined, she will be a positive role model for young people.
Picture
I've always been interested in the entertainment business & acting and got scouted at the Del Mar Fair by Tower Talent Studio West for modeling. I started taking improv/ acting and modeling classes there. Through Tower Talent, I went to the Industry Network competition in LA and met many agents and managers, one being Meraki Modeling Management. They ended up signing me as a model. I decided to take a chance with it and ended up loving it.

It was super exciting getting a modeling contract at such a young age. I was never really worried or scared during the process, it was all just super fun and I liked going with the flow of it. I’ve learned so much about the industry and continue to learn more and more.
Picture
Modeling has affected my life greatly. I have less insecurities, it gave me confidence, and I never knew I was this passionate about it until I tried it out, so now I’m hooked. It has also helped me to be more outgoing. I have to audition for jobs, so modeling has helped me with my communication skills with adults.

My favorite topics to write about are usually personal. I like writing about my feelings of past experiences because writing is a good outlet for getting out my emotions.
Picture
I continue to audition for short films, and my improv skills have helped me think on the spot. I recently auditioned for a role in the LA 48 Hour Film Project. In that audition, I had to read lines with the director from a script and he also directed me through an improvisational scene.

The hardest thing I’ve accomplished would probably be maintaining good grades. I participated in tutoring and asking for help from teachers and my parents. I also have a studying routine- as soon as I come home from school, I study and do homework.

The advice I would give to someone who wants to be where I am today is being confident in who you are; don't let anyone push your dreams aside just because they ask you to. And do what's best for you, it’s okay to say no.

Picture
In the future, I would like to see myself being well known in the entertainment business. It would be great if I could travel overseas to model after I graduate high school.

Three things on my bucket list are going to Disneyland Tokyo, getting a Pomeranian, and signing up for a voice over class

Grace Hendrickson - Oklahoma
Interview by Larissa Chelius
Nomination & Photography by Traci Hendrickson
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Two years ago, as Grace Hendrickson was starting 6th grade, she was given the student mentor class as an elective. Being a student mentor involved helping and guiding the special needs students at the school. Grace fell in LOVE with the kids. They became her friends and even-though she is the mentor, I believe they have made an even greater impact in her life. She loves spending her day with the students and helping them with schoolwork and day to day activities. During her 7th grade year, she continued as a mentor and formed even closer bonds with the kids.
Grace chose to eat lunch everyday with one of her best friends, Shawn, who she has now mentored for 2 years. They bring a joy to her life like I've never seen before. She attended special Olympics with them and had a wonderful time. She has now started volunteering at our church with the special needs class as well. Grace inspires me and those around her. I have even seen her younger siblings take an interest in the special needs kids because of her example. She will continue mentoring in 8th grade and has decided she would like to pursue a future working with them through teaching or occupational therapy. She truly has a gift and I've loved watching her use it. Thank you for the opportunity to recognize how amazing Grace is!
Picture
What did you love about being a mentor for the special needs students?
I love mentoring special needs kids because I love helping them work through their everyday challenges that they face. Their courage inspires me to confront my own fears and challenges. I have so much fun hanging out with them. These kids are always there for me and don’t care what you look like or what you wear. They love you for who you are.

How did mentoring these students impact your life for the better?
Mentoring the special needs students has definitely made a huge impact on my life. They have taught me so many life lessons and have showed me what a good friend is. These kids have led me closer to God by showing me his love. By nature, I am a very cautious person. However, as a mentor, these kids need me to be a leader and push them beyond their comfort zones. In order to do that, I have learned to push myself out of my own comfort zone.

Picture
Tell me a little bit about the Special Olympics, and what it meant to you and the kids you mentor.
Special Olympics is where people with special needs from all around Oklahoma come together to compete in different sports. I was able to compete with the kids I mentor in basketball and bocce ball. My partner, Diego, and I earned the gold medal in bocce ball. Winning or losing didn’t matter to the kids. Either way they were the happiest kids in the world and seeing them so happy put a huge smile on my face.

Going to the Special Olympics was a life changing experience for me that I will never forget. As a mentor, I had to opportunity to stay in a dorm with a student who has down syndrome, named Kayley. She has such a fun personality and is always a great friend to me. Kayley and I have hung out outside of school several times and our friendship continues to grow stronger.
Picture

As a mentor, what have the kids taught you over the years?
Over the past few years, special needs kids have been amazing friends to me and have taught me to be a better friend. They have taught me to be myself and not worry about what others think of me. These students have shown me to see people for who they are on the inside and not by the way they look.

Picture
Do you plan to continue to work with special needs kids as you get older?
I plan to continue being a student mentor in the Owasso school system. As I get older, there will be opportunities to volunteer that involve working with special needs students outside of school. My dream is to have a career working with children who have disabilities. I plan to become a special education teacher or an occupational therapist. I know that working with special needs students is my passion.

Harli Ferrell – North Carolina
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Robin Miller Photography
Issue 25 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Harli Ferrell graduated June 2019 from East Burke High School. She was very busy during high school with being a good student and getting her CNA. She also participated in multiple clubs including the Anchor Club where they achieve volunteer hours to stay in it. Harli was voted by her student body for Senior Homecoming Court.
She was a member of the pie club, spirit club and a cheerleader all 4 years of high school and started cheerleading since Kindergarten. In the Fall Harli will begin Caldwell County Community College with a major in Cardiovascular Sonography.
Picture

How did you become interested in cheerleading?
I have been cheering for as long as I can remember. Cheering is a huge part of my life and very important to me. I started cheering before I entered kindergarten and have never stopped. My mom coached me from then through the 6th grade and really encouraged me all the way through it.

What is your favorite thing about being a cheerleader? Why?
My favorite thing about being a cheerleader is actually being a leader! A lot of people think of cheering as just a girly sport but it is truly about leadership whether we’re leading our football team to a victory or leading our school and the community, that’s what it’s all about for me and setting a good example for the little girls that want to be just like us one day. Cheering under the Friday night lights is also one of the many things I loved about cheering.

Tell us about your involvement in the Anchor Club and your duties within the club.
Anchor Club was huge part of my Junior and Senior year. We did tons of community service and had to earn hours to stay in anchor club, I always did my hours at a local nursing home called Trinity Village. The people there are so kind and welcoming, and I really enjoyed volunteering. We also have powderpuff football which is so much fun! We always got to play our schools rival team and we won this year actually! Also, we do anchor club initiation, where we dress up the members that are Juniors in crazy outfits and they have to walk around school in it all day! It’s so much fun and I truly enjoyed it.

What was it like being voted for the Senior Homecoming Court?
Being on Homecoming Court was honestly a dream come true! Ever since I was little and went to high school games, I always wanted to be on it just like my mom was. It didn’t matter if I won or not; it’s was the honor that my senior class voted me on it that was so special, and that my best friend since kindergarten, Austin got to escort me. It was such an amazing and fun experience!
Picture
Why did you want to major in Cardiovascular Sonography?
The heart as always interested me especially in my health classes in high school. It’s so interesting to learn about the anatomy of the heart. But what truly sealed the deal is that my dad had 3 heart attacks in a matter of a few hours very recently. That’s when I knew this is the field I want to go into.
