Describe some of the leadership responsibilities that come along with being co-captain of your cheerleading team, Homecoming Queen, and any other roles that you have.
Some responsibilities that come with being a cheer co-captain include being a role model for the team and setting an example. As co-captain, I help make some decisions to help better the team. As Vice President of Student Council, I help make decisions regarding pep rallies and planning the homecoming dance. I am also Secretary for my class. Last year I was involved in planning the prom, and now I am helping design graduation announcements.
Picture
Tell me about some of the academic and athletic activities you take part in and how do you balance all of them?
I participate in various activities including cheerleading (co-captain), track, cross country, dance, National Honor Society, Student Council (Vice President), Senior Class Officer (Secretary) and Spanish club. Although I am very busy in many sports and extracurricular activities, I am still able to balance school, my family and my social life. I use a planner and try my best to plan ahead and stay organized. There are times when I have conflicts and have to prioritize what is most important.
Picture

What is the most important leadership lesson that you have learned?

I think the most important leadership lesson that I have learned so far is that as a leader you are a role model and you are setting expectations for the team. I believe that every person reacts differently to different leadership and therefore a leader needs to learn their team’s individual’s strengths and weaknesses to help keep the team working together at their highest potential. In other words, there is no way to “blanket” lead a team because every team and person on the team is different.

Picture
What are some qualities that you believe make you a leader, and how are they incorporated in your everyday life?
Some qualities that I believe make a leader are accountability, confidence, and compassion. As a leader, accountability is important because as a leader, you are a role model and your team needs to know that they can count on you. Outside of leadership, it is important to be accountable to your friends and family, as well as your teachers. Confidence helps make a leader be able to show that you are sure of your decisions as a leader, and compassion helps a leader be more aware of others’ needs, which helps the team work better together.

What will you be doing after High School?
I will be attending Butler University in the fall to study biochemistry. I plan on going to medical school to hopefully become a pediatrician.

Alexis Filmer - Indiana
Interview by Sierra Zaccagnino
Nomination & Photography by Jennifer Dunn Photography
Featured in Issue 16 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The nomination: Alexis is an AMAZING volleyball player! To know her in person you wouldn't expect her to be so aggressive on the court, but she is! She is a sweet, kind and funny girl too!
Picture
What inspired you to start playing volleyball?
I started as a basketball player at the age of 4 but at age 7 I watched my older cousin, Abbie, play a high school volleyball game and knew that volleyball was the sport for me. I started playing that next season and loved it. I hope that I have been able to inspire another young athlete the way Abbie inspired me.

What has been the biggest challenge being a student athlete and how have you overcome it?
My biggest challenge being a student athlete is finding the time to balance my volleyball schedule and rigorous school curriculum. Playing volleyball all year round, overcoming it has not been easy but sacrificing social events to make time for academics has been well worth it.

In your opinion, what is the most rewarding part of being an athlete?
Although there are many, if I had to narrow it down to one reward it would be the family like bond I have made with my teammates past and present. I have built many friendships with coaches and players that mean so much to me. I know they will last a lifetime.

Picture

Is there anything else besides volleyball that you are well known for?
I love to travel! My family has always made travel a priority and I have been lucky enough to see a lot of the world. I enjoy seeing and participating in the customs of other cultures. This has been such a big part of my life that my family even took our photographer, Jennifer Dunn, on a couple trips with us to capture my love for traveling. I hope to continue this into my adulthood.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to attend college and become a Speech Pathology/American Sign Language major. I have a passion to help people and tend to gravitate towards children. I hope to have a career working with special needs children.

Interview by Sierra Zaccagnino | Submitted by Tucker Brown
Nomination by Rob Brown | Photography by Teerage Photography
California

The Nomination: When he was 12 years old he told his mother and I that all he wanted to do for the rest of his life was act, sing and dance. For the last two winters and now the end of summer through December he has been and will be in Los Angeles chasing his dream. The determination to march to the beat of his own drum and chart his own path no matter what anyone may say about it is truly an inspiration.

How and when did you first become interested in performing? I was about six, and I saw High School Musical for the first time. I remember thinking I would love to do that. I have Zac Efron to thank for this.

What has been the biggest challenge in pursuing your dreams? In the beginning it was location, I am originally from Mississippi.

How have you worked to overcome any challenges? I now spend a lot of the year in LA so location isn’t as much of a challenge.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone else who wants to follow his or her own dream and branch out? Most of the time we all feel like we must be like everyone else. We must fit in and do what everyone else is doing. People like to put us in boxes, and the bet piece of advice I can give anyone is to believe that there is no box. We were all made different and we must be who we were born to be otherwise we are just existing and not living.

What on your resume are you most proud of? I have had some amazing people help me and coach me along this journey. The team that I have around me now is what I am most proud. They are as committed to my success as I am.

What is hands down the most exciting experience you have in LA so far? I got to spend three nights on the set of American Ninja Warrior when it filmed at Universal Studios. I got to meet most of the Ninjas which was amazing since I am a huge fan of the show.

Mean Girls Theatrical Review

Images & Article by Sierra Zaccagnino

Mean Girls” Takes on Broadway and It Is Totally Fetch!

Everyone loves “Mean Girls”, the original movie about friendships, identity, betrayal, and all high school drama. Well now, you can see the story unfold on the big Broadway stage with an incredible cast. Although not every detail of the movie is seen in this new production, the main story, and even a few iconic lines, are still included. The show had a difficult task of adapting such a classic movie into a real musical. However, not only did the musical do justice to the original picture, but it also brought a whole new level of entertainment and excitement to the story.
Picture

There are multiple high-energy and dramatic musical numbers throughout the show such as “Apex Predator”, “Stop”, “Revenge Party”, and more. The songs in this show add an excitement factor to the production and give the audience a deeper sense of each character. Since this musical involves real people acting as the characters we all know and love, it shows more dimensions and layers of each character. This includes characters that maybe aren’t as highlighted in the movie as they deserve to be, such as Regina’s friend group of Gretchen and Karen. The audience learns more about Gretchen’s own personal troubles in her number “What’s Wrong with Me?”, and we get to see another side of Karen in her own song. Some other great numbers are Janice’s song “I’d Rather Be Me”, and Regina’s “World Burn”. Overall, the entire soundtrack of this new musical is worth listening to, even if you haven’t seen the show yet!

Recently in many Broadway musicals and plays, technology has made a greater appearance in the themes of shows and in the overall set designs. In Mean Girls the Broadway musical, most of the backdrops are created from digital images that create very realistic scenes. Everything from cafeterias, to school hallways, to house parties, is easily generated in an instant. This new use of technology also allows for more space on the stage, and therefore more room for elaborate dance and musical numbers (which are abundant in this show!). Given that these innovations have led to great results, it would not be surprising if other new shows started to use this idea for set designs as well.

If you still have doubts about the production of Mean Girls on Broadway, just look at any other review online. Critics everywhere love this new musical, and you will too! The soundtrack is fantastic in emphasizing every character, the set design brings a unique approach to the musical, and each character is so perfectly cast that you may even find yourself rooting for Regina George sometimes. So, get out and go see Mean Girls on Broadway if you want to see a lively and sensational new hit!

The Importance of Biodiversity

8/10/2018

Picture

By Sierra Zaccagnino

In our world today, everyone always depends on someone or something. No one is ever truly independent from all other activities in their community because everyone plays a part, no matter how big or how small. This is true not only for humans, but also for all organisms and individuals on Earth.

There is a link between all of us because we live in an interdependent ecosystem. The extinction of one species affects another, which affects another, which affects another, and so on. No one seems to mind this, until the day when it could affect us. Biodiversity is something that needs to be conserved not just because its interesting to live in a world of such variety, but more importantly because it boosts ecosystem productivity, where each species has a role.

Being close to extinction are the African Forest Elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis), which are a very genetically diverse species. These elephants come from mainly Central Africa and are vital to their tropical ecosystem. They maintain it through seed dispersal and germination, nutrient cycling, and herbivory. Nutrients are chemicals necessary in any ecosystems for organisms to effectively grow, survive and decompose.

Even though most adult elephants do not have any natural predators that need them for food, they are essential for providing other tasks for the environment, such as those just briefly mentioned. Without the African Forest Elephants, many species would not be able to survive. Although this does not impact humans directly, it goes to show that extinctions can have a chain of effect.

The loss of biodiversity in most ecosystems can be attributed to one thing – human activities. Major causes include habitat loss and degradation, pollution, introduction of invasive species, deforestation, and global warming. Most, but not all, of these come clearly from human intervention.
Although we may be the cause of the problem, we can also be the solution.

To help stop deforestation, humans can make smart decisions that shift consumption and land use patterns in less wasteful directions. Yes, this includes recycling! Everyone always says to recycle, and everyone always overlooks it, but it really is important. Recycling products means that people can reuse the same amount of paper and materials without the need to cut down more trees to manufacture a greater amount.

To help with pollution, make sure to dispose trash appropriately, use environmentally safe products, wash your car on the lawn, pick up after your pets, don’t litter, and recycle (yes, that applies here too!).

To help habitat loss, learn about your property before you build on it. Not everything in life has to be about going to the extremes to pursue change because sometimes it’s as simple as education! Of course, this applies to almost every cause of biodiversity loss here. Most of this may seem impossible for any one individual to solve, but staying educated and sharing with others is the way that change starts.

Saving Space for Summer

8/8/2018

Picture

By Sierra Zaccagnino

Now that summertime is finally here, everyone wants that fresh, perfect bedroom! Every space can be improved upon and appear larger with some illusions and tricks that can be applied to any room, not just bedrooms. Both space and color are two major factors that impact atmosphere and interior design, which is why it’s important to focus on these concepts first.

If you have a small, cramped room and want to make your room seem larger, you don’t need to break down walls to do so. There are some simple adjustments that can make a world of difference. For starters, ditching window treatments to let more natural light in will create the effect of a more open space. However, if you’re a more private person, then try sheer white drapes instead. This will allow more light, and it will still provide a clean, breezy look that gives the room more depth.

Another easy trick is to add more mirrors and reflective surfaces in a space. Doing this creates an illusion of depth by bouncing light deep into the room. Also, more vertical mirrors draw the eyes up and down, making the room appear bigger.

Sometimes too much furniture in a room is what makes it feel clustered, which is why multifunctional pieces are always a desirable choice. These items can combine two or more essential home pieces into one, which saves space in an interior. Some examples of this are sofa beds, chairs that house shelving units, transformable tables, etc. Doing this also creates a low-mass concept, making the room more simplified. It is always better to have fewer larger pieces of furniture in a room than having lots of small decorative pieces.

Whether you change your window treatments, add more mirrors, incorporate multifunctional furniture into your room, or do something entirely different, the amount of ways there are to improve the interior design of a space is limitless. Not only is space a big part of interior design, but color also has a high significance in the atmosphere and structure.

Simply color coding items in a room, such as books or clothes, produces a more organized appearance. But if you feel that you’ve done this, and you still feel your room is unorganized, you should try a monochromatic color scheme. A monochromatic color scheme uses different tints and shades of the same color to create unity. Some people believe that choosing colors for a room is a fun and enjoyable task, but for other it proves to be stressful. By using monochromatic colors, the stress of finding colors that harmonize well with each other is eliminated.

Although picking colors should not be a miserable task, sometimes a color can either make or break a room. If you’re interested in repainting your room, try using light colors on the walls to make the space appear larger. In contrast, dark wall colors make a room appear smaller. Most people tend to prefer a larger room, but if you enjoy the coziness of a smaller room, then try adding an accent wall in your room because they break up a space.

The atmosphere of a space affects your mood and behavior throughout the day, which means that your bedroom should reflect your own personality. So, hopefully you can find time this summer to redecorate, repaint, or redo anything about your room to create a more enjoyable and pleasant atmosphere!

Council Rock Freshman Photo Shoot: Sierra Zaccagnino

1/14/2018

Welcome to the Team, Sierra!

Hi everyone!

I'd like to introduce you to Sierra Zaccagnino. She's a freshman in Council Rock School District and one of the newest members on our Leadership Team.  Sierra jumped right in to be a Co-Chair of the Party Planning Committee to help plan our next  big event!

Some of Sierra's hobbies include different forms of art - such as drawing, painting, interior design, and fashion. She also enjoys playing/composing music on the piano and acoustic guitar. In her free time, sometimes she does creative writing and poetry. Sierra also loves playing volleyball both in school, and travel with Princeton Volleyball Club. In her school she is actively involved in FBLA club (Future Business Leaders of America).

I loved photographing Sierra and getting to know her better because she brought amazing props that helped to tell the story of her, including her guitar:

...and her camera.
I LOVE girls who love to take pictures!

We also did some pictures without props of course...

At the end of the shoot we headed outside into the beautiful (although freezing)
